Bring on the beat MORE than 45 acts, four stages, food trucks, a beer hall and Mojito bar and a spectacular fireworks finish promise to light up Geelong’s Labour Day weekend.

The third annual Motor City Music Festival brings the party back to the region with an eclectic mix of rock, rhythm and blues and country.

The event returns to the Geelong Showgrounds over three big days on 11 to 13 March and offers a smorgasbord of great adult rock on Friday and Saturday, complemented by blues and roots all weekend.

The family-friendly fun-day Sunday will be an ideal time to bring the kids, tweens, teens and grandparents for an all-ages day featuring the fun of the showgrounds plus kids’ entertainment.

The festival weekend wraps up on Sunday night with a huge fireworks display at 8.45pm.

The festival is the only one of its kind in Geelong and is the brainchild of seasoned music curators Hugo T Armstrong and Chris Longmore.

“In the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s a lot of Australia’s biggest bands toured through Geelong at venues like the Collendina, Golf View, the Dinosaur, the Eureka and the Palais,” Armstrong said.

“We’re celebrating those halcyon days through the Motor City Music Festival.”

The opening night gets the festival rocking to get everyone in the mood with the likes of Miss Quincy direct from Canada and Geelong’s legendary Glitter Gang.

Australia’s only tribute fest takes over on SDaturday night with seven of Australia’s biggest tribute acts on one stage including the amazing Kisstroyer and the electric Thunderstruck.

ROCK ON: Motor City Music Festival always provides plenty of excitement for punters.

Then the stages get handed over to the kids for Sunday fun-day featuring Dean Ray and the Melbourne Transformers.

Lovers of country music can rejoice at the country music muster, the biggest of its kind in this neck of the woods, featuring ARIA and Golden Guitar superstar Shane Nicholson and Australia’s Got Talent participants the Wolf Brothers.

tures more than 20 of the best including Tex Perkins and Australia’s hardest hitting Hammond organ trio Cookin’ On 3 Burners’ along with a guest appearance from Stella Angelico.

Eugene ‘Hideaway’ Bridges comes direct from Texas, mixing it up with legendary Sydney band, the Bondi Cigars and Jimi Hocking’s Blues Machine.

Hard-rock launch kicks festival off It will be a hard-rock opening to Geetroit’s own Motor City Music Festival with Canada’s Miss Quincy and the all-girl Wild Violet shaking up the showgrounds.

Appropriately, Geelong’s own Glitter Gang opens proceedings on the Friday night rock night, with Western Australian outfit Sister’s Doll adding to the glam.

The Glitter Gang will bring all its sparkle to the Friday night Southern Cross stage of Motor City Music Festival at Geelong Showgrounds.

The band will reprise the hits of ’70s icons such as The Sweet, KISS, ELO, Skyhooks, Status Quo, ABBA, Sherbet, Hot Chocolate and Gary Glitter.

With its line-up of Barry Glitter, Marsha Brady, Stevie Knievel, Bobby Dazzler and Mickey Blitz, the band has achieved Geelong musical institution status.

It’s G-town’s own interpretation of the era of glam rock’s glory days with its big heels, make-up, spacesuits, flares, brutish open chests and 747wing collars.

Counter to the band name, Sister’s Doll is three brothers that aim to take over any audience with the theatrical power of their performance.

Starting in a back shed like so many, Sister’s Doll won several band competitions, were invited to playing at festivals, put on their own shows and culminated with a tour of the US. Sister’s Doll runs the full glam gamut, costumes, pyrotechnics, sexy dancing girls, smoke machines, lasers and confetti bombs.

Miss Quincy and the Showdown return to Australia for a second tour, having clocked hundreds of thousands of kilometres crossing dozens of countries on three different continents.

This is not pretty girl rock – Miss Quincy promises down and dirty roots and blues and straight up rock ‘n’ roll.

With a recently released album and a single to drop early next month, Miss Quincy’s high octane rock ‘n’ roll infused with blues and soul will dominate the Motor City Friday night stage.

It’s pure vintage rock emanating from the guitars of the all-girl band Wild Violet, with influences ranging from Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Runaways and early KISS. The heavy rock outfit of Angelica Zahra on lead guitar, Jacinta Jaye on Bass and Niyoosha Roberts on drums shares vocal duties.

Despite the male rock influences, Wild Violet manages to retain its own twist of rock femininity with its big riffs, big guitars, big hair and big attitude.

Sister’s Doll will add some edge to Friday night.

Australian blues and roots acts will take to three stages over the three day Motor City Music Festival, with special international artists.

Local blues singer and guitarist Chris Wilson has been a favourite in the Geelong scene for 20 years.

His musical gift and talenta harmonica skills have granted him the opportunity to work on recordings with the likes of James Reyne, Hunters and Collectors, Archie Roach, X and Deborah Conway.

Jimi Hocking has enjoyed gold and platinum success as the lead guitarist in The Screaming Jets.

He was looking forward to leading the ‘super jam’ on the Saturday of Motor City Music.

“I’m excited to return to Motor City this year,“ Hocking told the Indy.

Sweet Felicia and the Honeytones will be among the performers guesting with Jimi Hockings’ Blues Machine.

19-Twenty are a riff and groove-based blues band that were handpicked by Cold Chisel Management as the only support band to open for Cold Chisel’s first club gig in 30 years and their last as the original line-up in front of 1500 screaming fans, which sold out in three minutes.

Also in the blues and roots line-up is the awardwinning quartet Bondi Cigars who have been nominated for the Best Blues & Roots Album ARIA in 2003 for Down In The Valley and were awarded Best Blues Album at the 1996 Lithgow Blues Festival for

Blues and soul singer Eugene ‘Hideaway’ Bridges is coming from the US for Motor City Music Festival.

The dulcet tones of the ever-popular Hammond organ will be the main course at Motor City Music Festival when Cookin’ on 3 Burners turn up the heat.

The soul, blues, jazz fusion outfit defy classification, taking elements from various genres to create their own musical stew.

Throw in prime vocals from the likes of Tex Perkins (The Cruel Sea, Beasts of Bourbon) and Melbourne soul queen Stella Angelico and the set becomes piping hot.

After a sweet tasting collaboration on the song “Flat On My Back” for their award-winning 2014 album Blind Bet, Cookin’ and Tex were keen to get back in the kitchen for another round.

The result is a real treat with dessert supplied by smoking soulstress Stella Angelico as a special guest. Jake Mason (organ) Dan West (guitar) and Ivan Khatchoyan (drums) style themselves as Australia’s hardest hitting Hammond organ trio.

Veterans of the music scene, the three have a multitude of gigs, tours and six albums to their credit.

THE GOODS: Christie Lamb will help bring the country feel to the Southern Cross stage on the final day of the Motor City Music Festival, on Sunday.

Sound of country at Southern Cross A host of country artists are set to rock the Southern Cross Stage on the final day of the Motor City Music Festival.

Among the headlining acts is Aleyce Simmonds, who earned recognition as the 2014 Australian Independent Female Artist of the Year and is a five-time Golden Guitar nominee.

Amber Lawrence will bring her award-winning talent to Geelong, with the tunes from her top five ARIA Country Chart Album, Superheroes.

Local musician Bill Gray completed a music scholarship at the Academy of Country Music in Tamworth, NSW, being mentored by some of the biggest names in Australian country music.

He says he is keen to play more of his own songs at Motor City Music.

“I’m confident that my originals will be really well received in among the Johnny Cash and Alan Jackson covers. I think I’ve got some really good material,” Gray told the Indy.

Singer/songwriter Shane Nicholson spent a week in the town of Hermannsburg, south-west

of Alice Springs, home of his friend, the great Indigenous songwriter Warren H. Williams.

The resulting album, Hell Breaks Loose, is Nicholson’s first recording of original material since the breakdown of his marriage to Kasey Chambers, with whom he recorded two ARIA Award-winning alt-country duet albums, Rattlin’ Bones in 2008 and Wreck & Ruin in 2012.

“Many of these songs are about self-discovery and new horizons,” Nicholson said.

“And also how that’s not always great, it can also sometimes be difficult. You can veer down a few wrong paths. It can take time to adjust. Writers will always find turmoil to write about even if there isn’t any, but the writing for this record certainly came from an authentic place, and was very cathartic.”

Other artists in the lineup include Christie Lamb, Californian-born Jared Porter, country rockers The Brook Chivell Band and The Wolfe Brothers.

Country music artists will play on Sunday 13 March at the Southern Cross Stage.

Motor City Music will give tribute to an array of much-loved bands and musicians of both the past and present on Saturday.

Festival co-director Hugo T. Armstrong said Temperamental’s tribute to The Divinyls was a worthy cover.

Drucindy Chin-Quan approaches her portrayal of Chrissy Amphlett from the position of being first and foremost a fan.

“She can be a hard character to get right. I still study her. I am always looking at video clips, before every stage show, to refresh myself,“ she told the Indy.

“That way I know I won’t get too comfortable.

There’s always something new to pick up that I can incorporate into the show.”

Australian rock band Gold Chisel fronted by Andy Lutze will recapture the sound and spirit of Jimmy Barnes’ Cold Chisel.

55 marathons man A South Geelong personal trainer is set to claim a world record of running 55 marathons in 55 days this Wednesday while raising money for charity.

With six months of solid training under his belt, Matthew Daniels has run a marathon a day since 1 January.

He is now five days away from taking the Guinness World Record away from a Japanese man who has held the current record of 52 marathons run on consecutive days which he set 2009.

The 36-year-old father of three has worked in the fitness industry for nine years and is no stranger to long runs.

“I’ve had plenty of experience so my body’s

“I’ve run the Melbourne Marathon, Great Ocean Road Marathon, ANZAC Ultra – which is over 450km in five days – and the 760km from Adelaide to Geelong in 12 days.

“There haven’t been any days where I couldn’t run or move or anything like that. I’m feeling good.”

“My fiancé has been really supportive. She’s picked up the hours at our gym,” he said.

The Armstrong Creek resident was motivated after reading the book With Every Step by Neil Cadigan.

It documents his son Andrew’s 15,000km charity walk around Australia which raised $65,000 for the Cancer Council and Leukaemia Foundation.

Just 12 weeks after his trek, Andrew died after suffering severe head injuries in a motorcycle accident in Thailand.

“Andrew had been raising money for research into myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) after his mate died from the disease,” Mr Daniels said.

“I wanted to do something to continue his work.

“His father, Neil Cadigan, gave me the green light to go ahead and do the back-to-back marathon runs, and we talk a couple of times a week.

‘Erratic’ man seized after police feared for child A Highton man remains in psychiatric care after resisting arrest in dramatic scenes on Pakington Street this week, police said on Thursday.

The 35-year-old was allegedly involved in a series of car collisions before leaving his vehicle and displaying “unusual behaviour” on the Geelong West street.

Police and witnesses feared for the safety of a one-year-old in his arms at the time.

Police said the man was still in a psychiatric

unit at University Geelong Hospital’s Swanston Centre on Thursday.

Sergeant Michael Egan said the man “ran toward” police when they approached him about 4pm on Monday.

He “motioned as though he was going to throw the child”, Sgt Egan said.

“The man resisted arrest and capsicum spray was deployed.

“Once arrested he was brought back to the Geelong Police Station and police assessed his

suitability for an interview.

“Police were concerned by his behaviour and his psychiatric state so he was admitted to the Swanston Centre on Monday afternoon.”

A number of witnesses saw the incident, Sgt Egan said.

Waurn Ponds police have asked for more witnesses to come forward if they had information that could assist investigations.

By ALANA MITCHELSON A corporate renaming of Simonds Stadium threatens to again overlook the historical and cultural significance of its site in Kardinia Park, according to a Geelong Aboriginal elder.

Reports this week that the name would change to GMHBA Stadium in 2018 came as an unwelcome surprise to David ‘Uncle Dave’ Tournier.

“I thought that given our good relationship with the club - the Aboriginal flag now flies fulltime from the stadium - they might have consulted us,” he told the Indy.

“Because of modern times and funding they’ve got to use those corporate names.

“But for me and several older people in the community, not only Aboriginal people, it will always be Kardinia Park.”

The site was used to exchange goods, conduct marriages, resolve disputes and eat in groups, he explained The Aboriginal word ‘kardinia’ meant ‘sunrise’, he said.

Wathaurong Aboriginal Cooperative indigenous protected areas project co-ordinator Trevor ‘Reg’ Abrahams said “many don’t seem to care” about the site’s history.

“These names convey bland sponsorship messages from big sponsors rather than meaningful messages about Geelong’s history.

“I know that, personally, the name Simonds or GMHBA doesn’t really mean anything to me.

“The landscape has really changed with property developments and I think a lot of meaning has been lost over the years but I think times are changing.

“A lot of tourists and the local community like to see things with an Aboriginal name.”

Geelong Cats media manager Kevin Diggerson said the club held the naming rights to the stadium.

“Our club’s very respectful of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within the stadium.

“We fly both flags, hold a welcome-to-country ceremony on large occasions and the acknowledgement of country is played at home games on the big screen as part of the RAP activity,” Mr Diggerson said.

“The naming rights of the stadium falls within the club’s rights as part of its lease with City of Greater Geelong.”

Mr Diggerson said he could not “confirm nor deny” the reported name change to GMHBA Stadium.

Victorian Governor Linda Dessau officiated at the investiture ceremony this week, with Mr Stanhope replacing David Morgan after 10 years in the position.

Hoons strike hard at golf course

By ALANA MITCHELSON Vandals and thieves have inflicted thousands of dollars’ worth of damage on Bannockburn’s struggling golf club.

Bannockburn Golf Club secretary Dick Van Den Bosch said hoons had torn up the course and burglars had targeted the clubhouse and workshop several times over the past month.

“Hoons have done wheelies on the course, tearing up one of the fairways two weeks ago and again last week at a different part of the course,” he said.

“They’re doing burnouts on the lawn at the

back of the golf course where the bush track backs on to remote access of the golf course.

“It just tears up the mowed grass and puts holes in the fairways.

“And why? Just for fun, or what they consider fun, but it’s definitely not fun for our volunteers who have to pick up the pieces.”

The club estimated the cost of the vandalism and break-ins at $8500.

“About four weeks ago thieves stole a small truck, water cart, some fuel from the shed and three small motorbikes that some of the older golfers used to get around the course.

“Now they haven’t been able to play any-

more,” Mr Van Den Bosch said.

The string of incidents had prompted the club to install infrared surveillance cameras in the clubhouse and workshop, he said.

“These vandals need to understand that the course is entirely run by volunteers.

“Every time they ruin our course, those volunteers have to pick that time back up and deal with the damage they’ve caused.

“We have some insurance but not a whole lot.

“It’s going to cost us to replace what was stolen and put extra security measures in place to try to catch the people responsible.”

Councillor Rod Macdonald, who holds the council portfolio for the Knowledge Economy and Education, said digital inclusion meant everybody had equal access to technology and assistance in using it regardless of income, ability or disadvantage.

“It’s an alarming fact that one in five Australian adults are not online - that’s almost 4 million people,” he said.

Cr Macdonald said there were various ways for people to improve their digital literacy or help a friend, family member or neighbour who might be digitally isolated.

“Help someone learn a new skill, get involved with free technology lessons at your local library, get assistance with managing mobile phone debt and know where free wi-fi is available. Free wi-fi is a really important part of digital inclusion as it gives people access to technology without racking up huge internet usage debts.”

Cr Macdonald said the National Year of Digital Inclusion would host a number of events which are planned to help people learn new digital skills throughout the year.

Victims of last month’s flash flooding in Geelong could now apply for disaster assistance, state and federal governments announced on Thursday.

Up to $32,500 was available for clean-ups, emergency accommodation, repairs, contents replacement and rebuilding “a principal place of residence” the governments said.

City Hall would also receive funding assistance to defray the cost of the clean-up.

Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan and Victorian Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett said a jointly-funded Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) would provide the assistance.

Both governments recognised the need for quick action to help affected communities recover, Mr Keenan said.

“These measures will support the community of greater Geelong with its recovery from the flooding and ease the associated financial burden on the council.

“The Commonwealth and Victorian governments are committed to working together to ensure that disaster affected communities receive the necessary support to help them recover as soon as possible.”

Mr Van Den Bosch said volunteers had spent weeks preparing the course for this weekend’s Bannockburn Open tournament.

“We wanted to present it in the best possible condition,” Mr Van Den Bosch said.

“It’s not as good as we’d hoped but the numbers are good and the weather promises to be good, so we’re keeping positive.

Eighteen months ago the Indy reported the club was battling for members and had launched a campaign to attract new players from Geelong’s northern suburbs.

Caravan rollover

By ALANA MITCHELSON An elderly couple were lucky to survive after rolling their vehicle and caravan west of Geelong on the weekend, according to police.

The Melbourne pair was taken to hospital after losing control of their Ford sedan at an Inverleigh level crossing on Saturday morning, police said.

Investigators believed the car was travelling west along an 80km/h section of Hamilton Highway when the caravan began to sway from side to side, causing the driver to lose control.

The car veered off the road soon after passing through the level crossing, police said.

The vehicle then struck a railway sign on the Inverleigh side of the crossing.

Police said the caravan then rolled three times

before coming to a halt.

The 78-year-old male driver and his 76-yearold female passenger were taken to Geelong Hospital, where they were later reported to be in a stable condition.

Senior Constable Christopher Reynolds said an ambulance arrived about 11am to ferry the injured pair for treatment.

“When caravans sway the car becomes difficult to steer,” Sen Const Reynolds said.

“No other vehicles were involved. Along that section of the highway, winds can be an issue, so whether that caused it to sway or the draft from the car is yet to be determined.

“We had a witness pull over at the scene who’s assisting police with an investigation of the incident,” he said.

Geelong’s council has agreed to continue paying the lion’s share of funding to the region’s municipal alliance group.

Geelong could also increase its funding for G21 by about 15 per cent, with council to consider committing $463,390 in next financial year’s budget.

The organisation’s five member councils - Geelong, Surf Coast, Queenscliffe, Golden Plains, Colac Otway - chip in based on their population sizes, meaning City Hall pays substantially more than the others.

G21 Geelong Regional Alliance works with government, business and community groups to identify local priorities and lobby for funding.

Geelong’s funding for G21 has previously been subject to debate, with councillor Bruce Harwood calling for a review in 2013 and the same year a Liberal MP questioned whether the organisation was value for money.

Then-G21 board director Barbara Abley hit back, calling the “perennial attacks” on its value to the region “unfounded and not factual”.

The organisation, which has former Labor MP Elaine Carbines as chief executive officer, has been drawing council funding since its formation in 2002.

This week the council agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding to “lock in its participation” again until 2020.

Mayor Darryn Lyons backed the council’s ongoing involvement in G21.

He listed some of its 2016 priority projects as “addressing disadvantage”, a Yarra Street pier for cruise ships, Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct, central city revitalisation, and regional rail connections, “among others”.

“Since starting in 2002 the G21 Geelong Region Alliance has been widely recognised as a successful working example of a whole-of-government approach to regional planning and development,” Cr Lyons said.

“The Geelong alliance has worked hard on projects like Portarlington Safe Harbour, Armstrong Creek Urban Growth Area and Geelong Future Cities.

“By signing the updated memorandum of understanding, the City of Greater Geelong is re-confirming our commitment to join together in leadership and continue the alliance’s long-term plan to develop this great region.”

About 1400 city businesses will pay more than $1 million a year to fund the initiative and other programs after the council this week struck a special rate to cover central Geelong marketing costs.

The cost of annual council marketing levies on city centre shops have angered some traders.

But councillor Michelle Heagney said the new rate scheme would provide them with economic benefits.

Businesses would pay on average $2.73 per week for marketing campaigns expected to bring in an additional $3.8 million a year, she said.

“Central Geelong Marketing has been hugely successful over the past four years, delivering 2046 activities to more than 328,000 people.

“This has brought in $53.45 million of total economic output with the Geelong region and an average $13.36 million each year.

“This expanded program will bring further benefits.”

Cr Heagney said the special rate was equitable and fair.

A new report proves the dumped East West Link proposal is essential to Geelong’s future, according to federal MP Sarah Henderson.

Infrastructure Australia’s (IA) 15year plan prioritised the East West Link as a second major arterial road from Geelong via the Western Ring Road into Melbourne, avoiding the clogged West Gate Bridge.

Ms Henderson seized on the report saying state Labor’s preferred Western Distributor project was “very Mel-

bourne-centric and a poor cousin to the East West Link” that did “nothing for the long-term needs” of Geelong.

“The business plan for this project has still not been properly costed. Labor is negotiating this in secret with Transurban, raising fears that this will leave Victorians paying another $20 billion to $30 billion in tolls over the life of the contract and getting very little in return.

“With no deal on the table, the Commonwealth is not able to assess the merits of the Western Distributor project.

Another retail chain that operated a local store has closed.

GNC LiveWell’s outlet in Westfield Geelong was one of seven stores in the chain that ceased trading after the Australian operations of the global brand were placed in voluntary administration.

The retail outlets sold a range of vitamins and nutritional supplements.

Singapore-based Osim International owns the global brand but is exiting the Australian nutritional supplements market.

The company’s 2015 financial results showed its Australian arm suffered a $2.6 million loss.

Pitcher Partners has been appointed administrators of ONI Global (Australia).

The closure followed last week’s Indy report that Geelong’s two Jaffle Jaffle stores and the Geelong outlet of Jeep clothing had collapsed into voluntary administration.

Jaffle Jaffle operated a flagship Westfield Geelong outlet as well as stores at Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre and central Melbourne’s Collins Street.

The chain was founded in 2014 and sold a range of gourmet toasted sandwiches.

The company behind the Jeep retail chain, Revolution Brands, also collapsed into voluntary administration last week.

The first Jeep clothing store opened 10 years ago but expanded to 20 stores nationwide, including the Geelong shop, which remains trading.

The administrator said the Jeep stores would stay open while it attempted to sell the business as a going concern.

A number of high-profile retail brands have collapsed into administration in the past few months including homewares business Laura Ashley and electronics chain Dick Smith.

Eighteen of the region’s top young tradespeople will compete at a 2016 WorldSkills Australia National Competition in Melbourne.

And lady tradies are leading the way as part of the team, selected following last year’s regional WorldSkills competition.

The Geelong competitors will join 500 from across the country at Melbourne Showgrounds in October to vie for honours as a national champion in more than 50 skill categories.

Among them will be Kate Elstone, an apprentice cabinetmaker from Drysdale who earned her spot after securing a gold medal in cabinetmaking at the regional level.

Kate had experience on her side having competed at the 2014 WorldSkills Australia National Competition in Perth, placing 11th as a second year apprentice.

Now, the Gordon TAFE final year apprentice said she is determined to win national gold this time.

“Not only would I be achieving a dream of mine but to also beat my placing from the last time I competed would mean a great deal to me,” Kate said.

“I feel privileged to have the opportunity yet again and I hope that I can leave a lasting impression on my fellow competitors.

“I’m proud but nervous, too. I’m hoping to learn what I can from the experience, meet new people, have fun and hopefully do well.”

Apprentice electrician and instrumentation technician Hannah Terry has also started training for the national competition.

The Lethbridge Gordon TAFE student said she understood the importance of choosing the right career.

“I just looked at what I’m good at, what I enjoy and where it could take me,” Hannah said.

Among them is Chevonne Nicholas - an apprentice florist from Werribee Station Place Florist.

The Little River florist will compete after earning a silver medal in the regional competition.

The 21-year-old has already gathered an impressive collection of awards including first and second places in various divisions of the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, a first in the Oasis Designz Cup and second at the Australian Association of Floral Designers.

Faith to face those fears

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN For someone studying a for a diploma of community services, a week looking after deserving children, many from traumatic backgrounds, could not have been more appropriate.

For North Geelong’s Tanya Matulich, the experience of volunteering at the annual Lions Clubs children’s wilderness adventure camp at Licola was an eye-opener.

“I do some volunteering at Geelong Food Relief Centre but I hadn’t done anything like this before,” the office administrator for TVD Group Builders said.

“I just saw it on the Volunteering Geelong website and decided to inquire. It turned out to be quite a stretch for me.

“I came out a bit different.”

The camp took 139 children, including 20 from families of refugees, from as far afield as Simpson to Little River for five days at the Lionsrun camp, a five-hour bus drive past the Mt Baw Baw National Park.

Tanya was one of 33 volunteers on the five-day camp, giving the children an escape and introducing them to a different environment.

“Many never been on a camp before,” Tanya said.

“It was an opportunity to leave their life behind and, you know, there is trauma in many of their lives but they are surprisingly open and trusting despite that.

“You just spend the time to build relationships with the kids; it’s mainly about setting boundaries and role modelling.

“There’s an activity called the Leap of Faith where you climb atop a tall pole in a rope harness, then jump out to touch a suspended ball before being lowered back to earth.

“I screamed my lungs out. I’m not good at heights. But it showed the kids that it’s OK to face your fears.”

Plans for more central parking One hundred new car parks are on the way to central Geelong, City Hall has announced.

Work to build a car park in Gheringhap Street began this week after recent rain and flash flooding delayed the project’s start date, said councillor Lindsay Ellis.

The work included filling a former railway tunnel under Mercer Street and replacing an old brick drain, he said.

The car park off Gheringhap and Corio streets would services Geelong’s arts and cultural precinct “Remediation activities kicked off last week and project works have started, which will last for a few months,” Cr Ellis said.

“Once the project is complete there will be approximately 100 new car park spaces… made up of a combination of permit and casual parking with provision for holders of disability permits.

“The car park will be ticketed for the casual bays at the same fee as on-street parking, $2.60 per hour.”

Cr Ellis said the tunnel, blocked off at its Geelong Police Station entrance, was formerly used to connect Geelong’s railway line to Cunningham Pier.

The tunnel had been abandoned for “some time”, he said.

The drain had also “outlived its useful life” when it serviced nearby railway yards and “about half of Geelong West”.

Cr Ellis was happy to see the work begin following last month’s flash-flooding.

The project will include beautification of the site with additional trees, landscaping and pedestrian access, Cr Ellis said.

“As part of the tunnel-filling process, workers will be removing the old railway cutting, which follows the decommissioning and decontamination of a former petrol station at the site.”

It’s crunch time for NDIS

Premier Daniel Andrews.

THE Geelong-based National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) faces critical decisions that will affect it for the next 30 years, according to Premier Daniel Andrews.

He urged Federal Government to deliver promised economic and social reforms and funding to guarantee the scheme’s future.

“If the NDIS is to succeed, the Federal Government must show it is committed to putting people with a disability at the heart of a system of rights that ensures they have choice and control over their support services.

The NDIS is now facing crucial decisions that will set the standards and outcomes for the next 30 years,“ Mr Andrews said.

“We’re determined to uphold quality standards for the new system.

“For this to happen, we need the Federal Government to deliver on the NDIS as it promised.”

Mr Andrews said service rights must be enforced, with governments supporting independent advocacy.

“Quality must be backed by registration of providers, external scrutiny and robust complaints handling, including the ability to investigate. The few rogues must be weeded out.

“Support is needed for clients, their families, providers, advocates and workers to understand their roles, rights and responsibilities in the new world of the NDIS.” Mr Andrews said Victoria had invested more than $10 million but had seen “very little” investment from the Federal Government’s $140 million Sector Development Fund.

“This is the year the Federal Government needs to step up and work with the states, people with disabilities, their families and their organisations to achieve this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform the lives of 450,000 Australians with disabilities.”

Mr Andrews has also been criticised over the NDIS, with a protest targeting him in Torquay earlier this month for breaking a promise to retain state disability services in public hands.

The Health and Community Service Union’s Lloyd Williams said the “policy backflip” would privatise all the state services, affecting 5000 workers and 3000 clients in the disability sector.

The changes would “create massive chaos” for disabled people and their families, Mr Williams warned.

‘2000 jobs’ from 14-storey office A new 14-storey office building will deliver almost 2000 jobs and $330 million a year for Geelong’s economy, according to Mayor Darryn Lyons.

The premises for over 700 WorkSafe staff would be a “symbol of the change, growth and prosperity that Geelong is being recognised for”, Cr Lyons said.

The staff and their clients would “breathe life into the CBD”, he said “This will mean hundreds of additional workers will be drinking coffees, buying lunches, using our open space at lunch times. It will have major benefits on the cafes and restaurants and shops in central Geelong.

“As well as the fulltime staff at WorkSafe, calculations from Enterprise Geelong show this will create an additional 1170 flow-on jobs and inject nearly $330 million a year into the local economy.”

The $120 million WorkSafe office will extend above an historic Dalgety and Co building at 1 Malop Street.

WorkSafe will begin relocating from Melbourne this year, with the first 150 staff to work from temporary offices in the city and the rest to

arrive when the building is complete in 2018.

Cr Lyons said the WorkSafe announcement reinforced the future of Geelong as a “world-class city”.

“It’s a great return on investment for the City of Greater Geelong’s work in revitalising the CBD. “We’ve been working publicly and behind the scenes to create a great environment to live, work and invest in and that work’s now paying dividends.

Cr Lyons said the relocation was also a “strong commitment” on behalf of State Government to central Geelong’s revitalisation.

The new building would be a “positive step” toward achieving City Hall’s target of 30,000 workers in central Geelong and a five per cent reduction in its ground-floor property vacancies, he said.

“In order to be a vibrant, world-class city it is essential that we have a strong base of professional workers in the CBD.” Cr Lyons said City Hall processed three competing applications for the WorkSafe building “in record time”.

‘Questions’ over $1m site freebie Geelong’s council will give away Ocean Grove land worth about $1 million for a community service which is usually funded by state and federal government.

Councillors voted this week to transfer 77-79 Draper Street “at nil consideration” to provide supported accommodation for disabled people.

Disability services provider Karingal will build the facility on the site which formerly operated as netball courts in a residential area and opposite a football oval.

Karingal, which has an operating budget of $100 million a year, must begin building within 12 months of the handover and begin operating the accommodation in one and a half years.

The council agreed at the meeting on Tuesday night to hand over the site, fronting Asbury Street at the rear, as it seeks permission to exceed a proposed government rates cap amid claims of state and federal “cost shifting” onto City Hall.

Ocean Grove councillor Jan Farrell said the Bellarine Peninsula had a shortage of “suitable” supported accommodation for disabled people.

“I’m thrilled we have been able to provide some additional options for those people and their families.”

Cr Farrell said the future of the site was the subject of two public submission processes and had been identified “for a much-needed community use”.

Western Victoria MP Simon Ramsay questioned why councillors would give away such valuable land while City Hall’s finances were so “shaky”.

“The council is simply in no position to be gifting land, given its financial position,” he said.

“It was an odd decision given the council’s long-term strategy of maximising the value of council assets to ratepayers and reducing debt.

“I don’t think there’s any dispute that more investment into services provided by Karingal is needed but, given a significant investment by all tiers of government into disability services, ratepayers could well question if the City of Greater Geelong is in a position to gift millions of dollars of council-owned land to multi-million dollar companies.

Mr Ramsay warned that the council may have set an expensive precedent.

“It’s not the council’s role to provide stimulus for developers by granting free gifts of land which should be treated like any other council asset.”

BIG CATCH: Geelong Star should be banned for catching a whale shark, environmental groups say.

Super trawler in trapped shark row Controversial super trawler Geelong Star has outraged conservation groups after a whale shark became entangled in its net on its latest fishing expedition.

The Australian Stop the Trawler Alliance called for the factory freezer trawler to be permanently banned.

Alliance spokesperson Rebecca Hubbard said catching “a majestic, vulnerable whale shark” was the last straw.

“Whoever industry and Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) thought it could fool before, the game is up.

“Our marine life, our tourism industries and our fishing are too valuable to risk for these destructive operators.”

AFMA admitted catching the whale shark but said it was freed safely.

But the alliance alleged that crew members

had suggested on Facebook that the shark was dead and sank in the sea.

“The catching of a whale shark is abhorrent and unacceptable, even more so because it comes on top of revelations of more seal deaths in the most recent fishing trip, the death of seven albatrosses last trip and the deaths of dolphins and seals in previous trips “The catching of this whale shark will bring international criticism of Australia’s fishing industry and must signal the final end for foreign freezer factory trawlers in our waters.

“If the catching of a whale shark by the Geelong Star is not the death knell for this monster trawler, then it must be asked: who is the Turnbull Government representing?

“Only a ban on all freezer factory trawlers in the Small Pelagic Fishery (the area of sea around the southern half of the country) will end this environmental, social and economic fiasco.”

Smart city push launched Geelong has spruiked itself as a “21st Century Smart City” in a new initiative to lure investment.

Premier Daniel Andrews launched the inaugural Transforming Geelong Roadshow in Melbourne this week, telling attendees the city’s “best days lie ahead”.

“Corporate executives and potential investors” attended the roadshow at a Victorian Government Investment Centre in Collins Street, the event’s organisers said.

“Community and business leaders” representing Geelong included ports and stevedoring specialist Murray Vitlich, Federal MP Sarah Henderson and deputy mayor Bruce Harwood.

Committee for Geelong chief Rebecca Casson called the roadshow an “important platform for drawing attention to the changes that are taking place in Geelong and attracting the investment dollars and talent that will be necessary to drive the city’s prosperous future”.

“We’re asking people to look at Geelong through new eyes and see the unique and attractive package it presents as a business and lifestyle choice,” Ms Casson said.

“It has a regional heartbeat yet is Victoria’s second-largest city. It offers enviable coastal living, yet is less than 60 minutes from the Melbourne CBD. “Geelong is exciting, affordable, and welcoming.”

The roadshow also highlight Geelong’s residential growth projects, from 225,000 to 300,000 by 2031 and to 500,000 by 2050, the organisers said.

“The roadshow highlights that, with $1.3 billion worth of major development projects underway and with $2.3 billion worth of projects in the pipeline, this growth and the city’s potential is being recognised by investors.”

The event also highlighted Geelong’s transition away from traditional manufacturing industries toward the public service, education, research and cultural opportunities, the organisers said.

Yvonne Adami (Letters, 12 February) condemned “demonisation of refugees” and wanted a “progressive, legal and compassionate” policy including permanently settling in Australia anyone deemed to be a refugee.

I agree. How dare Australia try to impede all those people who fly into Indonesia and pay good money to people smugglers for Australian citizenship! And how dare Australia try to ensure that the neediest, who don’t have money and who live in total squalor for years in UNHCR camps, are selected first! Totally outrageous!

We should encourage people back on the boats and give them automatic citizenship if they get to Christmas Island.

Unfortunately, the ensuing avalanche of boats will result in thousands drowned or smashed to bits on the island’s rocks.

To prevent this, our air force should provide around-the-clock flights to Indonesia.

In fact, to stop people even having to get to Indonesia the air force should extend this service to Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia et cetera.

And when they get here, we must try extremely hard not to offend them with our racist culture and yobbo way of life.

Only then can we purge ourselves of this overwhelming guilt of being so totally barbaric, cruel and inhumane as a nation.

We should instead model ourselves on Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Japan, China, Russia, Iran and India, which welcome all refugees with humanity and compassion!

New footy system promotes success Given the drift away from footy by new-age parents/partners toward the plethora of soft options for their children, it’s important that AFL Barwon, in the instigation of checks and balances, sticks to its guns regarding points and player payments and the tier promotion/relegation model for local football (Indy, 12 February) Why should parochialism, club dominance and gaming interests collectively be the tail that wags the dog?

Subsidising junior registrations is to be applauded. Why couldn’t it have been implemented years ago and across all local leagues?

Fifteen or so years ago, because of imbalances between the three leagues, I suggested to arguably one of the VFL/GFL’s most-credentialed players and coaches the merits of a local promotion/relegation system.

I’ve never forgotten his spontaneous, honest response; that it would be bad for his club but good for local football.

Nothing’s changed.

Now an autonomous governing body charged with the wellbeing of footy and netball has put two promotion/ relegation proposals on the table with a reasonable timeline and sound supportive statistical data, along with a commitment of ongoing, authoritative support and affected-club conciliatory-submission input.

All in all, it’s got to be good for the health and growth of the game in what can continue to be a powerhouse zone and nursery for footy and netball at the elite levels.

Australian of the controversy While watching the news I found out that the Australian of the Year is mired in controversy.

This award should be beyond reproach or controversy and if the selectors cannot chose an appropriately benign recipient then perhaps the award should be renamed Controversy of the Year?

Because that is what it has turned out to be, much to the dismay, I expect, of many loyal Australians.

Arrogant dog owner too ruff on neighbours A Bucket in last week’s Indy displayed the arrogance of some dog owners when the writer suggested that elderly neighbours should move to a retirement village if they don’t like dogs barking.

People of all ages can be annoyed by barking dogs but we all can’t move away just so the owners don’t have to hear us complain.

Why do dog owners feign deafness to their pets’ non-stop barking? Surely it annoys them as much as others.

You can’t walk down a street without at least one dog making a racket like World War III has broken out.

Excuses for dogs’ non-stop, senseless bark-

Christian ‘blackmail’ unlikely As a Christian I agree with Michael Gamble (Letters, 12 February): any churches using the situation of refugees to blackmail them into joining the church should be condemned. The Christianity of the Bible is of a personal faith in a gracious, redeeming God; a faith for which numbers don’t count unless they are numbers of people genuinely changed by a relationship with Jesus.

I would be appalled if Christians were telling desperate people to join the church to gain safety from oppression and to avoid a death sentence.

I don’t see any evidence that a significant number of such opportunistic conversions have actually occurred. I also find it hard to imagine, since in many Muslim countries the only Christians persecuted, if any, are those who have converted from Islam, so by converting they are actually increasing their chances of oppression.

I hope Mr Gamble wasn’t using this situation to take cheap shots at the church.

It certainly seemed that way when he made veiled references to a divided church with the use of the term “many branches of Christianity”.

That was ironic, since it is in times of persecu-

ing, such as that the dog is defending its territory or that it only barks at strangers, are as lame as they are inaccurate.

I’ve walked past one house with the same dog for years. It clearly knows who I am yet still barks like a maniac well after I’ve passed.

As long as people own dogs others will complain when they bark for hours on end for no reason.

My advice is to get over it and if you can’t handle reasonable complaints move yourself and your noisy dog to some far-away village.

Warriors come out to play The Great Ocean Road has another great trafficstopper. At Carisbrook Creek, between Kennett River and Apollo Bay, we now have an army of river stone warriors.

Hundreds of them are marshalled on the sand.

They are all individually designed from finely balanced flat river stones, with some incorporating driftwood and seaweed. A few are bridge constructions and there’s also a mini-Stonehenge.

Apparently it all started late in January when an artist produced two stone sculptures - and then they multiplied faster than rabbits!

Carisbrook Creek is the only coastal stream with flat rocks at its mouth.

In this electronic age, when the trend is for everyone to be consumed by screens and bumbling around wearing headphones that block out other people and the real world, it is so refreshing to know that this activity has inspired people to come together in the great outdoors, using artistic

As a regular reader of the ongoing climate change debate in the Indy’s letters section, I would be interested to know the relevant scientific qualifications and climate-related work experience/ research of the main participants in this neverending feud.

Dr Ray Black has previously declared his academic qualifications but Alan Barron, Tim Saclier, Jukka Tuisku, Thomas Watson and others have been less upfront about their experience in climatology, meteorology, geology, palaeontology or general physics. Unless they can back up their assertions with proven expertise it is time all participants put up or shut up.

People are entitled to their own opinions but not their own facts.

How the climate cauldron fires up Tim Saclier and R Graham (Letters, 12 February) failed to respond directly to my challenge to identify exactly where the greenhouse gas equation is wrong, instead throwing up more every-whichway arguments.

Considering the consequences, they must already know where it is wrong. Otherwise they would surely not be so irresponsible as to call for no action. The basics of global warming are simple and explained by the exact science of physics.

It describes the fire under the cauldron, so to speak, but exactly what happens in the cauldron is a different, complex matter, which is studied by the field of climate science.

By adding CO2 to the atmosphere we turn up the fire. Earth’s ocean and atmospheric climate system responds by getting hotter.

This is just what we see today and was predictable 120 years ago.

Mr Saclier says, correctly, that Svante Arrhenius didn’t have the last word on CO2.

This honour is held by quantum mechanics, which has confirmed the measured greenhouse properties of CO2.

Quantum mechanics is the most successful theory ever. All our electronics today are built on it.

The very definition of exact science, it has never made an incorrect prediction.

Colourful ethnic cultures will come together again in Geelong West’s Pako Festa next weekend.

“Sullivan comes out on tour with me when I’ll be on the road for a decent period. But I only want him to pursue a career in the entertainment industry if he wants to.

“I wasn’t pushed into a performance career, but it was definitely encouraged. I want him to be able to decide that for himself. I think I’d do that differently.”

Country music performer Melinda Schneider will bring her Doris concert to Geelong next week with plans to take the show overseas in the near future.

The multi-Golden Guitar winner has featured in Doris Day – So Much More than the Girl Next Door across the nation since 2010, performing alongside two top male dancers and a 12-piece band. A highlight was staging Doris at Sydney Opera House.

Schneider has now given Doris a new life, bringing the production to regional areas in the form of a smaller concert show, all 26 songs included.

Writing the show in 2010 was a challenge for the songwriter, she admitted.

“It was all a whole new world – trying to convey my ideas to choreographers and actors – but such a big thrill to watch it come to life,” Schneider told the Indy.

“The show tells all of the wonderful stories of Doris Day’s life; how she recorded over 600 songs, starred in many hit movies, was devastated with bankruptcy and went through four marriages.

“I am really excited to be able to bring this wonderful music to smaller centres. People singa-long to the songs and leave with smiles on their faces.”

Schneider’s interest in Doris Day began after watching her 1953 film Calamity Jane.

“It was a Hollywood fairytale kind of a movie,” she said.

“She was such a huge talent, a triple threat as they say – she could sing, dance and act. I thought then that she was the best of everything a woman could be and when I grew up I wanted to be just like her.”

Wisdom helps in bridging the gap The generation gap was confusing enough where there were only two main ones but these days there’s four or five.

As an overnight couch-surf turns into an extended stay, 4000 Miles unearths a surprising parallel between these two generations in this emotionally compelling drama.

With disarming frankness and surprising candour, the two negotiate social potholes and trace emotional fault lines that link them to a painful family history.

The play won the 2012 Obie Award for Best New Play and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2013.

This production is a collaboration between independent theatre company Critical Stages, with MopHead and Catnip Productions, directed by Anthony Skuse.

The cast includes Aileen Hunynh, Diana McLean, Stephen Multari and Eloise Snape.

Cats to struggle Geelong Cricket Club faces a tough task of winning its match against Greenvale tomorrow, its visitors piling on 9/286 last week after being asked to bat.

It was a tight tussle early but a couple of wickets each to Dylan Moroney (2/41) and Hayden Butterworth (3/67) saw the Cats reduce Greenvale to 8/196 early in the afternoon session.

But as the wicket flattened out, so did the potency of the Geelong attack as 27 and 63 run partnerships slowly took the game out of their reach.

While the Geelong batting line up was brittle before Christmas, it has enjoyed better form of late and tomorrow could be a good chance to show it has come a long way since then.

In the Geelong Cricket Association, the division one finalists appear to be finally settled and with one game up its sleeves, St Josephs has come from the clouds to once again be a premiership contender.

Outright points last week over Murgheboluc have the Joeys seven points clear inside the top six and, barring the threat of an unlikely outright win to any of the sides sitting outside the top six, they can use their game against North Geelong this round to fine-tune themselves for another chance at March glory.

The only other game of any significance is between top placed East Belmont and fourth placed Lara at Winter Reserve.

While East Belmont looks like finishing on top, Lara can finish anywhere from third to fifth and will be looking to finish off the home and away season in good form and give themselves the best chance of progressing to the second round of the finals.

Corio Bay hosted excellent pinkie snapper fishing over the past week.

Anglers casting soft plastics hard against structure encountered fish to 50cm.

When the structure went quiet, sounders helped some anglers find schools of pinkies to continue the catches.

The odd flathead in the mid-40cm range was a common catch among the snapper.

Clifton Springs improved for catches of snapper, with Tim King and Ian Brew getting stuck into some well-conditioned fish from 2.5kg to 4kg on squid baits. The pair noted that the snapper really came on the bite over the past few weeks.

The nearby spoil grounds produced pike to 80cm for anglers using soft plastics.

Squid continued to be taken from Indented Heads through St Leonards, where anglers working three to four metres of water achieved the best results.

Whiting were also caught over similar ground on pippies and tenderised squid.

The Rip continued attracting anglers seeking kingfish. The fish were fewer in numbers but averaged 6kg, with most taken on jigs.

Australian salmon busting up on the surface made for excellent sport on light tackle while waiting for kingfish.

The Barwon River estuary kept anglers busy with mulloway, bream and trevally.

Anglers fishing further up in the system took mulloway to 80cm, others using live bass yabbies banked bream to 40cm and the trevally took both baits and lures while spread throughout the whole system.

Anglers who spun the rock platforms around Lorne tangled with some better-quality salmon.

Metal lures such as the Sea Iron Pelacus caught fish of 2kg.

The Western District continued keeping anglers entertained with kingfish and tuna.

Trolling white-skirted lures tipped with squid worked well along, as did casting stick bait lures into surface commotion.

Justin Burns and Simon Williams spent Saturday afternoon casting Fish Arrow soft plastics from the main rock wall at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, banking numerous chunky redfin averaging 40cm.

Redfin also came back on the chew in the Barwon River, with Queen’s Park producing fish to 800g on small deep-diving hard-body lures.

Andrew Orchard headed out of town to Lake Mulwala where he caught a 68cm, 5.3kg Murray cod while trolling a spinner bait at first light. Andrew said purple or black lures with red or pink underneath did the trick.

This weekend could be good for heading down to the Western District for kingfish and tuna.

Closer to home, Clifton Springs should be worth fishing for snapper while freshwater anglers should remain focused on ‘The Lake of 1000 Casts’, Wurdee Boluc, for redfin on soft plastics.
