“Excess materials outside of the collection limit must be returned back into the resident’s property and private arrangements made to dispose of the materials at a tip, or disposed by a private contractor,” he said.

However, Cr McAllister said her view was council should have “some leeway”, and collect piles that are slightly over the limit.

“I just think it would be common sense to have a bit of leeway on that.”

The residents, all of whom asked to remain anonymous, said their items remained on the street after the scheduled collection.

HARD Waste collections in the Yarra Ranges could be pushed later into the year, following complaints about piles of rubbish during the peak tourist season.

At Yarra Ranges Council’s meeting on Tuesday, 9 February, Yarra Valley Gables Motel owner Ralph Henderson said international visitors, while complimenting the valley, had asked why there was rubbish in the streets of town.

In a presentation, Mr Henderson asked the council to re-think its hard waste collection, whether through changing to a call-and-collect system, offering tip vouchers, or simply changing the date to avoid peak tourist times, such as summer.

“Tourists don’t owe us a living - they can go to other places,” he said.

Councillors at the meeting agreed it had been an issue, with Cr Jim Child noting that hard waste was visible in the televised Jayco Herald Sun Tour, which came through the valley earlier in the month.

Yarra Ranges Council’s Director of Environment and Engineering, Mark Varmalis, told councillors at the meeting that council’s contractors were “booked up” for other parts of the year, but that the contract was up for renewal this year.

Mr Varmalis noted that it would cost $4 million to provide tip vouchers for one trailer-load of rubbish to every resident in the Yarra Ranges, whereas the hard waste collection allows for three cubic metres of rubbish, and costs council about $1.5 million.

After the meeting, Cr Fiona McAllister said she personally felt the timing of hard waste collections had been an issue over the years.

“I’ll definitely be pushing to get the timing changed,” she said.

“There are plenty of other times in the year, when the weather’s okay, we haven’t got long weekends or as many significant events.”

Mr Henderson said the hard rubbish piles made the area unattractive for visitors, and said the council paying more to have collections later in the year would help businesses.

“We all want council to make money, but it’s costing local businesses money at the same time that’s not a good outcome,” he said.

Mr Varmalis said that council was “considering“ the option of changing the collection time, ahead of re-tendering its hard waste collection contract this year.

“As there are limited providers of these services across Melbourne, the rescheduling will need to fit within the selected contractor’s availability,“ he said.

Barr y’s not for quitting WHEN Barry Marshall joined the Warburton Urban Fire Brigade, the brigade’s running competitions were a big attraction.

Sixty years on, Barry has plenty to reflect on ... and it isn’t over yet.

The former captain, now president of the brigade, joined on 13 February, 1956 and he’s still on-call as a daytime firefighter.

He was 18 years old and had started an apprenticeship two years earlier at the local bus company, Martyrs, where brigade captain Mac Sparke also worked.

“He got a few of the young bucks together and got us into the competitions,” Barry said.

It was good training for the cricket Barry played in summer, and the football he played in winter - and, no doubt it was a fair trade of skills and stamina that made the Warburton brigade a successful contender.

Barry said the games brought firefighters from all around the state together in smaller towns and for the big demos at places like Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and Mildura.

“It was good competing as a team and seeing all different parts of the country,” he said.

“Some places, we camped out overnight so we’d be there early the next day for the competitions.”

His knowledge of the history of fires in the Upper Yarra comes from hands-on experience that covers decades of gradual change.

In the early days establishing where a fire was coming from was pretty basic.

“It’s something you pick up,” he said.

“You would hear the old fire bell ring and would look around to see where the fire was coming from.

like the back of the Upper Yarra Dam, Mount Beenak and Mount St Leonard over Healesville way, but in terms of the technology, meteorology and warnings that keep brigades informed today, it was pretty hands-on science.

“The fire bell has been replaced by pagers, and the old all-purpose pumper by modern tankers and pumpers, along with specialist communication and rescue vehicles. Some now have water spray protection.

“Helicopters and water bombers came around the early ’90s.“ The introduction of women as firefighters, changes to occupational health and safety, and a strong focus on fire prevention and community involvement have all been part of the journey.

Barry’s first major fire was in

1962 when the fire coming across from Toolangi and Healesville hit a wind change at Don Valley, pushing it across to the Woori Yallock flats.

Wind behaviour, and change, is something that doesn’t change. It’s been a major factor in so many of the big fires, including the Ash Wednesday fires in 1983 when Barry was brigade captain.

Locally, a pall of smoke rising from Mt Little Joe was the start and it didn’t end for almost a week when a rain storm finished it off.

In 1991, Mt Little Joe went up again. And then there was Black Saturday, 2009 when the threat to Warburton persisted for a fortnight.

There have been numerous accolades for Barry, including the Australian Fire Service Medal in 2000.

The competitions that drew Barry into the brigade 60 years ago aren’t such a feature of brigades these days.

Barry says young people now have cars, something he and most of the ‘young bucks’ didn’t have when he joined.

Would he encourage others to get involved in the new CFA? “For me, it’s something that just gets in your blood,” he says.

“I’ve had very good support from my wife Sue, daughter Wendy and son Daryl, and from some very good people in the brigade over the years.

“I’d say, give it a go. See whether you like it.

“There’s a sense of achievement in doing something for your town.”

Death of former Casey MP

By JESSIE GRAHAM FORMER Casey MP and federal parliamentary speaker, Bob Halverson, has reportedly died of cancer at the age of 78.

Mr Halverson died at his home in Albury, in New South Wales, on Tuesday, 9 February.

From 1984 until 1998, Mr Halverson was Member for Casey, and worked as the Liberal Party's Chief Opposition Whip before becoming Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Casey MP, Tony Smith, who has followed in Mr Halverson’s footsteps as Speaker, paid tribute to a “passionate, effective and respected” local member who was also a mentor.

“Bob was a wonderful mentor to me, and many others in my party,” he said.

Tribute was also paid by Warburton Liberal Party member, Keith Thomas, who knew Mr Halverson well.

Describing him as a gentleman, and ‘extremely capable’, he said “Bob was a down-to-earth person, able to communicate easily with people from all walks of life.

“He was well-liked and an excellent local Member who served the people of what was then the electorate of Casey, extremely well.”

He recalled also that he was very ably supported by his wife, Maggie, who he said, almost without fail accompanied her husband to local Liberal Party Branch dinners.

Mr Smith said Mr Halverson would be fondly remembered by his former staff and local Liberal Party members.

“We recognise Bob’s great contribution to our local area and to Australia, and pass on our most heartfelt condolences to Maggie and his family,” he said.

Mane game for Cody

By TALIN HADLOW WOORI Yallock’s young inspiration Cody Robinson, is being brave for the World’s Greatest Shave.

Cody, 12, decided to shave his head after dedicating three and a half years to growing what, by any measure, is a fantastic head of hair.

Cody’s motivation to raise funds and awareness for cancer research is the memory of his Nan, Alison, who passed away from lung cancer in 2012.

Cody has experienced both ridicule and strong encouragement in his quest to raise money to support Nan and other cancer sufferers.

“Another family member has recently been diagnosed with cancer and my Nan passed away from cancer, so I really want to do it this year”, Cody says of the World’s Greatest Shave.

“I know my best friend won’t even recognise me,” he said when asked about some of the positives of having short hair.

“Another bonus to having short hair is you don’t get hot in summer, I get lots of knots in my hair and I always get called a girl.”

Sticking to his guns and continuing to grow his hair, Cody has now won the support of locals in Woori Yallock and Healesville.

Placing collection tins in local stores, the Healesville RSL and registering his sponsorship on the World’s Greatest Shave Facebook page, Cody’s donations continue to grow daily.

Cody’s leading supporter, Mum, Elisha, knows how important local support is for Cody and their family.

“It’s awesome! You don’t realise how many people are there for you ... for Cody,” she said.

“A little bit of encouragement goes a long way.

YARRA RANGES police are searching for a man who was seen exposing himself to two women in Wandin North last month, and have released images to help track him down.

At 11.50am on Monday, 4 January, the man, believed to be in his early 20s with brown or dark blonde hair, reportedly looked at a woman walking along Victoria Road and exposed himself.

The Caucasian man was standing in front of a residential property at the time and was wearing a dark-coloured baseball cap, a T-shirt and board shorts.

At 8.40am on Saturday 23 January, on the Warburton Trail, a different woman saw the man between Wellington Road and Warburton, where he exposed himself again while standing on the track.

Police have described this man as Caucasian, aged between 25 and 30, with dark blond hair and about 180 centimetres tall with a thin build.

He was wearing a baseball cap, grey tracksuit pants and a grey jacket at the time, and police are investigating whether the incidents are linked.

On Tuesday 9 February, Victoria Police released images of the man described in both incidents and asked anyone with information about either incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Briefly Charged with 13 offences

Crash driver rescued

A MILLGROVE man was arrested last week, and will face multiple charges in court after rubbing up against girls at Westfield Knox shopping centre earlier this month.

Police said that on Tuesday 2 February the 46-year-old man walked through the shopping centre where people saw him rubbing himself through his clothing before approaching and rubbing up against several women.

Then on Tuesday 9 February detectives from Knox Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) with Warburton police executed a search warrant in Patrick Street, Millgrove.

Police found 35 mature cannabis plants growing in the backyard of the property and the man was arrested and charged with 13 offences, including sexual offences and cultivation of cannabis.

He is expected to front Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 25 July.

WANDIN CFA Rescue had to remove the roof of a car that crashed in Yellingbo last week to release the driver.

The Healesville Kooweerup Road was closed while emergency services worked to get the woman and only occupant of the car, free.

The woman was travelling from Cockatoo towards Woori Yallock when she lost control of the vehicle and rolled it just after 4pm, near the intersection of Kookaburra Lane.

Yellingbo CFA Captain Paul Spinks said although not physically trapped, the position of the car meant the woman driver, who was alone in the car, was unable to get out of the car which was on its side. She was stabilised at the scene by paramedics before being transported to The Alfred hospital with what were suspected to be minor injuries.

Captain Spinks said the incident appeared to be driver error.

It will see the development of a dedicated autism policy that will be taken to the next State Election by the Coalition in 2018.

In order to ensure this policy is comprehensive and meaning-

ful, we first need to hear about the experiences parents are having with service delivery - good, bad and indifferent.

Only once we have the full picture can we start to zero in on where change is necessary and decide what resources need to be allocated to make it happen.

THIS April, I will be hosting a forum on autism, and I am inviting families and service providers who have experience with autism to participate.

If I had to rank the issues that in the past two years have been most frequently brought to my attention - autism would have to be in the top five.

This tells me there are serious and widespread issues with service delivery in the Yarra Ranges, particularly impacting individuals with high-functioning autism.

As a result, families feel they are being ignored by policy makers and decision makers alike.

Autism rose to prominence again recently after some mothers began to question the role of immunisation in the onset of autism.

There is no reputable evidence to support this claim.

The fact is that the onset of autism tends to emerge around 12 months of age, which is also when babies receive some vaccines.

So, to be clear, parents should not refrain from immunising their child from dangerous and fatal disease in the mistaken belief it is in some way connected to autism.

tender for any of the 18 categories, but he is taking his ambassadorial role very seriously according to Lorraine, and, along with other members of his family, will be an awesome parade leader.

A number of local community members have been recruited to be guest judges.

Rotary President, Lesley Plumpton, said Rotary members were looking for a ‘signature’ family event that would have broad appeal, be a lot of fun and raise funds for Rotary projects.

The event will be held at the Don Road Sporting Complex from 10am to 2pm with the parade and a demonstration by the Healesville and District Dog Club at noon.

A YARRA Valley teacher living with ovarian cancer will take on the Warburton Trail at the end of the month, as part of a fundraiser for cancer research.

Sue Contarino will be setting off from Lilydale Train Station at 6am on Sunday, 28 February, as part of an all-day walking fund-raiser to Warburton.

She told the Mail that she would walk the 39 kilometre trail to the end over the day, and was inviting residents to join her along the way. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve put it out there on Facebook, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve invited all of my friends and told them they could invite their friends,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Those taking part in the walk are asked to donate $20, and to come prepared for the day with good walking shoes, sunscreen, water, food and a mobile phone - as well as a lift home from Warburton. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m hoping itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s epic,â&#x20AC;? Ms Contarino said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It might not be - it might just be five people, and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care - but my aim is to raise awareness that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s there.

The event coincides with Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in February, and all the money raised from the walk will go directly to the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation in Melbourne.

Business failure I AM aware of businesses that have made sincere and fully funded approaches to the Department of Environment, Water, Land and Planning (DELWP) some months ago.

I would say Monday night’s meeting in Toolangi was disastrous.

The Toolangi Forest Discovery Centre is destined to suck at the tax payers’ teat for the foreseeable future.

Despite months of opportunity, the group in the limelight seems to have no grasp on business viability.

The group asked DELWP for a “business plan template” and many of the questions demonstrated a frightening lack of understanding in basic business.

If DELWP had a “business plan template”, one would question the motives behind passing a lease or sale arrangement?

An arrangement that would seek to benefit the tax payer, not continue to suck much-needed funds from the public sector.

The answer may lie in a comment made by DELWP: “The wheels of bureaucracy move slowly, a committee of management will result in a faster outcome”.

No sane business would enter any sublease with this committee of management after listening to that meeting.

Every tax payer should be outraged that “slow bureaucracy” is a good reason to handball viable state assets.

The problem, in this instance, seems that the “viability” is being measured by a government department that is looking for a quick way out.

Each time you hear treasury making cuts, keep in mind that DELWP is openly sabotaging State and Federal treasury under the guise of “community benefit”.

Resourceful centre I WAS delighted read in the Mail (9 February, 2016) that the Toolangi Discovery Centre looks likely to re-open.

As a driver for McKenzies, I took many school groups to the centre for a day’s learning and a barbecue lunch in the beautiful natural setting.

WE are one of many who still have a pile of rubbish on our nature strip, with a notice that it wasn’t picked up because it exceeded three cubic metres and there were more than 10 pieces of timber (this was because we broke up a heavy cabinet so they could remove it easily - so much for being considerate).

Yarra Ranges Council only gives us one pick up per year, which is in the hottest time of the year instead of just before the bushfire season when people are clearing their properties.

They closed the tip. They shouldn’t have such a ridiculous limit on the amount of rubbish and they shouldn’t hire contractors who exploit those limits to avoid as much work as possible.

We are not hauling the rubbish back and we are not paying a fine for it either.

We have paid for it in our rates to be collected and the council has not honoured its agreement.

I WAS delighted to hear the other day that some progress has been made in the past 10 years when it comes to closing the gap.

Indigenous Australians’ life expectancy has improved marginally.

However, poverty, opportunity and economic inequity all need a lot of work.

There are some mighty big gaps in our wonderful land of plenty. When one per cent of our population possesses 40 per cent of the wealth, that’s what I call a gap.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for any Australian government to have the smarts, or even the courage, to do anything about that.

By PETER DOUGLAS THE Healesville Action Group (HAG) has joined Mount Evelyn Environment Protection and Progress Society (MEEPA) in voicing their opinions over the recent electoral review.

However, HAG insists there exists within the community unwarranted concerns over the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) proposal.

These include a change in Yarra Ranges Shire to a multi-councillor ward system, along with the inclusion of an extremely large ward in O’Shannassy.

The declaration from HAG, which was a submitter to the review, comes as Minister for Local Government, Natalie Hutchins, closes in on signing off on the recommendations.

HAG representative, John Anwin, said Yarra Ranges Shire and councillors should learn to work with the VEC recommendations.

“Why exactly should the Yarra Ranges council appeal?” he said.

“This review was carried out by an expert independent authority ... for the very reason it is independent of political or other influence.

By KATH GANNAWAY SEVILLE Cricket Club have hit a sixer (well, almost) with their fund-raising lunch for the Yarra Valley Ladies in Pink Family Cancer Support Group.

The club hosted the lunch on 7 February, at Killara Estate Winery in Seville and raised almost $6000 for the group which provides practical support for cancer sufferers in the Valley.

Organiser, Ally Quilty said they had around 130 guests all dipping in generously to support the more than 50 raffles, entertainment by musician

Emma Hales, and other activities all designed to raise much-needed funds.

“We had over 32 local businesses who donated prizes and we just could not do this sort of thing without that fantastic, generous support,” Ms Quilty said.

“We certainly could not have raised anything like the $2879 we did without them.”

One of those sponsors was Wilson & Bradley, a Seville Cricket Club sponsor, who caused a few jaws to drop when it was announced they were kicking in with a $3000 donation to bring the total close to the $6000.

Judy Sturt, co-convenor for YVLPFCSG said the money will go a long way to helping the families they support, including some spending on their Heather’s Haven respite house.

“It was such a wonderful, happy day,” Ms Sturt said.

“It’s just unbelievable that the cricket club, which just came out of the blue last year to support us, have come back this year and done it again.

“They are truly a terrific bunch of people who do a wonderful job in the community.”

A taste of things to come

By JESSE GRAHAM THE YARRA Ranges Council launched its Culture Tracks program for the year last week, giving audience a taste of the performances at Healesville’s Memo Hall.

Visitors packed into the Memo, on Wednesday 10 February, for the opening night of the yearlong program, which features exhibitions, music and theatre performances at the council’s venues in Healesville, Warburton, Lilydale, Montrose, Upwey and Mooroolbark.

After refreshments, visitors saw a performance by flash mob dancers in the foyer, as part of the council’s Dance Here program, before taking a seat in the Memo’s main room.

Human Animal Exchange performers, Sarah Hamilton and Justine Campbell, performed a spoken word segment of their show, They Saw a Thylacine, to start the night.

The lyrical performance tells the story of two women who saw the last Tasmanian Tiger, and the audience was silent as the lights dimmed and Hamilton and Campbell’s voices came out of the darkness.

Yarra Ranges Council’s manager of arts, culture and heritage, Greg Box, then introduced the program and said the events gave the community the opportunity to “track across” the area, going from venue to venue for more than 50 events.

Over the night, attendees watched previews of Boy Out of the Country and The Phantom of the Opera - performed as a radio-play - as well as a stirring performance from Jeff Jenkins for his Bob Dylan-inspired show, DYLANesque.

The Melbourne Ballet Company also gave a demonstration of their ballet, Arche, which will be performed at Burrinja in Upwey on 19 March.

Ryrie Ward councillor Fiona McAllister said the council had made a “significant” commitment to the arts with the program, which is now in its third year.

She said she was sometimes asked by residents why the council invested in the arts, and gave a stirring response to the crowd.

“If we don’t, local artists won’t blossom and grow,” Cr McAllister said.

RESIDENTS are being called on to mark the end of summer with a sporting day in Healesville, organised to raise awareness of Indigenous health services.

On Sunday 28 February, Eastern Health will run its annual Closing the Gap Family Sports Day at Healesville’s Don Road Sporting Complex.

The event, which is in its third year, will have Aboriginal sporting teams taking on Eastern Health staff in a football match and netball tournament.

Eastern Health’s Aboriginal

hospital liaison officer Jo Voce said the event was created to raise awareness of Indigenous health, and services available in the community.

“Days such as this are crucial in breaking down cultural barriers,” she said.

“The event provides us with the opportunity to inform the local Aboriginal community about the broad range of services we have available in the eastern region.

“Family fun and sport are great ways to connect communities with each other, and it is terrific we can bring people to-

gether in the spirit of reconciliation.

This year’s event will feature an appearance by the Melbourne Vixens netball team, live music, a silent auction with Indigenous artists, face painting, a petting zoo and a jumping castle, among other attractions.

Ms Voce said Indigenous rapper Philly would be performing during half time at the event, and that information on health services would be available.

The Closing the Gap Family Sports Day will start at 11am and run until 3pm.

Powerlines sent to ground

By KATH GANNAWAY YARRA Ranges residents may be eligible for funding to underground or upgrade private powerlines within their property.

The CFA District 13 Facebook recently alerted residents to the funding, saying undergrounding above ground lines not only reduced bushfire risks, but provided a more reliable service.

The Powerline Replacement Fund (PRF) will see powerlines in the highest risk bushfire areas replaced with insulated overhead, underground powerlines or new conductor technologies.

Funding for the $200 million fund is being directed in stages to priority areas identified in conjunction with the Fire Services Commissioner, Energy Safe Victoria, the Department and technical experts.

The fund will be directed at replacing both high voltage and private overhead electric lines in highest pri-

ority Local Government Areas.

The $200-million project is part of a $750-million package put in place by the Liberal Government in response to recommendations of the 2009 Bushfires Royal Commission.

The aim was to mitigate bushfire risk associated with single-wire earth return (SWER) power lines throughout Victoria by bundling or burying them and some work has already been done in Yarra Ranges Shire.

The Victorian Government Energy and Earth Resources website contains detailed information on the program, including eligibility criteria, frequently asked questions and a video providing an insight into the undergrounding of a private overhead electrical line and the scale of replacing high voltage powerlines.

There are also application guidelines and terms of participation and a list of registered electrical contractors.

Warburton takes the time to get up and run

By KATH GANNAWAY WARBURTON Up and Running is once again gearing up for a field of hundreds for the event which has become a must-do for families and novice and more serious runners.

The 2016 event will be half on Sunday, 28 February, starting at the Warburton Recreation Reserve.

Organised by a volunteer committee and with profits going to the local CFA and SES, is on track to match or better last year’s participation numbers of 700 according to committee member Michael Alter.

“It’s shaping up to be another great event for the town and for the runners,” he said.

Warburton Up and Running is a family fun run with events including the kids’ dash, 2km kids’ run, 5km

walk, 5km run, 10km run and half marathon.

A new team competition has been included this year with prizes for the team with the greatest aggregate distance and one randomly drawn from all the teams.

One of the drawcards for locals and for visitors is the course itself, tracking along the Yarra River and for the half marathon heading out to Big Pats Creek and into the State Forest.

Millgrove runner, Tim Lefel, is a first-time entry into the half marathon which is expected to have a field of between 200 and 250 runners.

“I’ve set a goal, which is to finish,” he said of the 21.5 kilometre event that is rated as ‘challenging’ by Alter.

Alter is part of a group which regularly tests out the courses, including the half marathon.

“It’s a beautiful but challenging course,” he said.

“We try to run as well so we’re in tune with what we’re putting our runners through.”

Participants will have lots of ‘take aways’ from the event that has become a memory-maker for everyone from family groups to novice and experienced runners.

In addition to the cash prizes, every finisher will receive a show bag packed with some great stuff, including discount vouchers for local businesses.

This year the committee has added a special, lasting souvenir of the event for runners in the 5km, 10km and the half-marathon, a stainless-steel water bottle.

Alter said they were looking at something everyone could use and

which would fit in with Warburton’s strong environmental credentials.

“What we are trying to do is not only give people the experience on the day, but something of value to take away that promotes Warburton and what it represents.

“A plastic bottle was out of the question, so we went with stainless steel,” he said.

All finishers of the half marathon also get a commemorative medal.

All events start at the Warburton Recreation Reserve where there will also be stalls, food and drink and activities for the kids.

The committee is encouraging entry on line, but there will also be entry on the day with the walk/runs scheduled to take off from 7.15am.

Burras surprise the Tigers

By CHRIS ANDERSON WITH cricketers waking to brilliant batting conditions on Saturday morning, the batsmen across the three games in DJ Strachan Shield failed to make hay while the sun shone.

In fact, they failed dismally.

The results have left some interesting scenarios in regards to the finals, with two games remaining.

The biggest upset after day one was Woori Yallock’s dismantling of Warburton-Millgrove, signifying their continual dominance.

Warburton-Millgrove was brilliant in their disposal of the Tigers on day one, running through their strong batting line-up for 116.

This set the Burras up for a comfortable chase with the chance to consolidate second place on the ladder and a home final.

Or so everyone thought, except for Woori Yallock.

The Tigers ripped through the visitors’ top-order like a knife through butter, courtesy of the brilliant Simon Young.

If Woori Yallock was to have any chance, they needed early wickets; and Young delivered in spades as his figures of 5/39 had the home side rocking.

With such a small total to defend, Woori Yallock needed to be at its best all day.

Burras captain Dan Lever (22) did his best to help his side to creep to the total.

But, as so often is the case for the Tigers, emerging spinner Ben Hayes (3/20) did his job of tidying up the Burras innings within 100 runs.

The win is a real flex of the muscles for Woori Yallock.

With sides looking at recent results, and a dip in form from the Tigers, many thought there were some chinks in the impenetrable armour of the defending champs.

But this masterful victory has the competition wondering how they are going to be beaten.

They now have a bye to rest up and plan their assault on back to back premierships.

Meanwhile, Warburton-Millgrove is left to lick their wounds, along with some indifferent form since the Christmas break.

Next round’s clash against Heales-

ville is virtually for a home final.

This will prove if the Burras still have the credentials to challenge for the premiership.

Mount Evelyn coughed up its position in the top four, and possibly their finals chances, with their disappointing chase of Yarra Junction’s 193.

Although a tricky total to chase, Mount Evelyn’s home ground has provided a feast for the batsmen on many occasions this season.

Therefore, entering day two, the home side were confident of chasing down the total.

The first hour was going to be crucial for both teams, as early wickets, or lack of them, could set either team on their way to victory.

It was a Yarra Junction that won the first hour handsomely.

Young star Jesse Cook (2/26) got the ball rolling dismissing the two openers.

While Brad Jones (29) put on some fireworks and threatened briefly, his innings was wrapped up quickly and the Rovers fell in a heap courtesy of some disciplined bowling accompanied by some not-so disciplined batting.

The home side lost 6/37, effectively ending the contest by tea slumping to 8/93.

Chris Anderson and Jed Thompson (24) did their best to add some respectability to the score; and their 50-run partnership almost had the Rovers back in the contest.

But with only two wickets in hand, and still plenty to chase, it only took Yarra Junction to break the partnership to secure the win with wickets in consecutive balls.

Lachlan Dempster (4/24) is proving to be a handy wicket-taker with his clever control, while his teammates didn’t let him down securing vital wickets at the other end.

Yarra Junction’s equation now becomes simple.

After relinquishing their top-four position once already, they can secure their position with victories over Seville and Healesville.

Meanwhile, Mount Evelyn will be kicking themselves as they have left their destiny somewhat in the laps of the gods.

A victory next round against Hoddles Creek will keep them in the running.

However, they are relying on Yarra Junction to slip up if they are to return to the top four.

Healesville did what they had to do, disposing of a disappointing Seville outfit.

Healesville would’ve been disappointed with its game against Mount Evelyn; and with the return of the experienced Hamer brothers, the line-up looked threatening.

That proved to be the case on the first week, where they set up their victory posting a formidable 239.

The Bloods’ bowlers were on the mark from the beginning and soon had the Blues reeling in their chase.

Matthew Peck opened up with the ball and his useful medium-pacers proved to be destructive.

Three wickets in quick time, and one to Dermott Fry, had the visitors in the box seat from the beginning.

Stout resistance Dan Lanka and Andy Kay momentarily stopped the rot, but it only delayed the inevitable.

Irish all-rounder Brian Scanlon burst through the Blues middle-order with three wickets, while Dale Senior mopped up the tail with two wickets with his spin.

Eventually, the Blues were dismissed for a dismal 97, effectively ending their late run to finals.

Seville is still a mathematical chance of featuring in finals, but it now must win both of their final games, starting with Yarra Junction this week, while hoping a couple of teams stumble.

On the other hand, Healesville is now a step closer to securing a home final, while a win against WarburtonMillgrove will place a significant mortgage on second position.

Heat’s on in must-win game WARBURTON BOWLS HOT conditions welcomed all the Pennant bowlers on Saturday as all sides played vital games leading up to the finals series.

Warburton 1 played Blackburn away and unfortunately went down 70 to 85 in a disappointing result.

They play Croydon at home this week in a must-win to consolidate a position in the top two leading up to the finals.

Warburton 2 played Monbulk at home seeking revenge from when they last played them away.

Yarra Glen bowls pays tribute to Moray YARRA GLEN BOWLS THIS week the Yarra Glen Bowls Club said goodbye to a valued and loyal 20-year member.

Moray Sharp - a charismatic man who loved his bowls, his club and the people in it - lost a very short fight to cancer.

The club will never be the same without his vibrant repertoire and larger-thanlife personality.

Although he chose to live a quiet life, he has left many friends who will miss Moray’s quick banter.

May he rest in peace.

Round 16 against Whittlesea was to prove an invaluable win for the firsts, cementing their place in the

finals; however, it wasn’t to be the case.

Yarra Glen found it hard going on the away green, only winning one rink and going down by 17 shots, which has seen their ladder position move to sixth.

The season is not over yet, however, with two rounds to go and only five points separating fourth, fifth and sixth, so destiny is in their hands.

Next week, they host Bundoora, which they have beaten at their home ground earlier in the season, so they are still in the hunt.

Division 2 had a good tussle against Ferntree Gully, winning one rink.

However, the top-of-thetable side was too good, all

the same, only winning by 25 shots.

Compared to the start of the season, they have come a long way with some great bowls being played.

They are just going to run out of matches.

Division 4 also had the same fate against UpweyTecoma on the grass, seeing the visitors take home the win 93-57.

The Second side in the Midweek competition is showing the way, sitting second on the table and enjoying another massive win against Lilydale, taking all rinks and finishing 74 to 35 up.

Only Blackburn looks in their way to securing the flag.

Motoring Phones not worth the risk

THE TAC is reminding Victorians to put away their phone and pay attention when walking this summer.

Nearly 200 pedestrians have lost their lives on Victorian roads in the past five years.

Despite far less congestion in rural areas, more than a quarter (56) of those people died outside metropolitan Melbourne.

Of those 56, Saturday proved to be by far the most fatal day of the week, with 15 regional pedestrian lives lost - the next highest was eight.

TAC chief executive Joe Calafiore reminded Victorians that a lapse of concentration when out walking could turn deadly.

“We all know pedestrians will come off second best in a crash with a vehicle like a car, tractor, truck or motorbike,“ Mr Calafiore said.

“What we are asking pedestrians to do is be aware of their surroundings at all times and put away the mobile phone when out for a walk or a drive.

“Distractions are a major cause of road trauma and all road users, whether they’re drivers, pedestrians, cyclists or riders, are at risk when their attention is taken from the important task of using our road network,“ Mr Calafiore said.

TAC road safety research has revealed about half (51 per cent) of regional drivers admit to answering or making a phone call while driving.

More than a quarter (27 per cent) of regional drivers said they read text messages while stopped at traffic lights, less than those drivers from metropolitan areas (36 per cent).

However, regional drivers were more likely than city drivers to read a text while actively driv-

ing (14 per cent versus 9 per cent).

“Whether you’re driving a car that’s moving or at a standstill, using your phone without a hands-free kit just shouldn’t be an option,“ Mr Calafiore said.

“Rural roads often have higher speeds, so if you’re looking at your phone for just a couple of

seconds while driving at 100km/h, you’ll travel almost 50 metres virtually blind.

“Installing hands-free technology while minimising your talk time, asking one of your passengers to look after your phone or even placing it in the boot are all better options than risking your life or others,“ Mr Calafiore said.

TOYOTA will bring the added appeal of hybrid technology to Australia’s favourite car with the mid-year launch of a Corolla hybrid hatch.

The new hybrid car is expected to use around one-third less fuel* while producing similar power to the already efficient petrol-only Corolla hatch with its Multidrive S automatic transmission.
