By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS FOR one Noble Park resident, there’s no way the State Government can make its sky rail project palatable.

“You can’t polish a turd,” he said with venom.

He said he does not want to stare at towering concrete and passing trains over his back fence.

The man has painted a political protest on his family’s back fence, brightly visible to train commuters: “How dare you destroy my home and community with ‘sky rail’ Mr Andrews”, it reads.

The man and his family have lived metres from the Corrigan Road level crossing’s frequently jangling bells and closing boom gates for 40 years.

Under the State Government’s plan, the in-

tersection and Noble Park’s other maligned level crossings at Heatherton and Chandler roads will be replaced by a nine-metre elevated rail section by late 2018.

“The level crossing doesn’t bother me because it wasn’t imposed on me after we moved in,” the resident said.

“But when someone imposes something upon

me without saying a word to me and they don’t listen to me...

“I was expecting it to go underground.”

The man pointed to a Level Crossing Removal Authority calling-card left at his home four days after the announcement. It states: “Sorry we missed you”.

Couple are a sure shot

By NARELLE COULTER BILL Toogood knew wife Gwen was the one for him when she jumped at the chance to go rabbit shooting while they were courting.

“I taught her to shoot,” said Bill proudly.

“I also taught her how to set traps. We would get home from the pictures in Korumburra and check the traps. I used to sell the rabbits at the (butcher’s) shop.

“One night a rabbit got out and she ran and caught it.”

Bill glances proudly at his wife of nearly 60 years, the affection between them obvious.

Gwen, 79, and Bill 87, celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on 18 February.

The couple has lived most of their married life in Dandenong in a little white house in Alexander Avenue that Bill built himself. Bill worked for many years as a butcher in Dandenong before eye problems forced an early retirement.

He describes marriage as the “best thing in my life”.

As Journal photographer Rob Carew asked Gwen and Bill to cuddle up for a photo, Bill grumbled: “I’m too old for this.”

“You weren’t saying that 60 years ago old boy,” chortles Gwen’s older sister Val who was in the couple’s bridal party.

The sisters grew up with Bill

in the little farming community of Poowong.

Their earliest memory of each other is from VE Day in 1945. Bill was droving cattle along a road when he stopped to ask the sisters, who were on their way home from school, why the church bells were ringing. Gwen was about eight at the time.

Years later when Gwen’s father “put on a barrel” for Bill’s mate’s birthday, Bill took his chance and asked Gwen out.

“I thought he was nice and kind,” said Gwen.

“I knew him and grew up with him. I’ve known him all my life.”

She remembers Bill coming into the bakery where she worked in Poowong to sit by the heater wearing “a maroon scarf and gabardine overcoat”.

She still has the maroon scarf.

Bill’s first job in Dandenong was in Henry Hicks’ butchery in Cadels Arcade.

The business later moved to Thomas Street, around the corner from the old Journal office.

Bill eventually purchased the business, renaming it Toogood Meats.

The couple courted for two years before Bill decided they would get married.

He was so keen to secure Gwen’s hand that he barged into her parents’ bedroom to ask her

father’s permission.

“They were in bed and I went in and said ‘OK if I marry your daughter?’ They said yes.

They couldn’t say anything else,” chuckled Bill.

“She was a nice girl and I was lonely. I never had a mother or father. I wanted a family.”

They were married in the All Saints Anglican Church in Poowong on a hot summer’s day. Afterwards, they celebrated at the Poowong Hall.

“I didn’t get into the hall that much that night. I kept getting called into the pub to have a drink,” said Bill mischievously.

When the Toogood’s moved to Alexander Avenue it was dirt road with very few residents.

Bill and Gwen lived in a caravan. Their letterbox was the highway because the postie wouldn’t deliver down the unsealed, often muddy road. Nor would the “dunny man” venture to their house.

Instead the waste was used to fertilise Bill’s famous rhubarb patch.

The couple had three sons Gary, Michael and Phillip. The clan has now expanded to include five grand-children.

When Bill retired, the Journal printed a photograph of him and singer John Farnham’s sister, Jeanne, standing on an old panel van festooned with flowers. Jeanne owned a florist shop

and Bill would store her unsold flowers in his fridges.

They celebrated their diamond milestone with a lunch on Saturday at Dandenong’s Workers Social Club in Wedge Street.

“You have your ups and downs but you get through it,” said Gwen, glancing at her husband. “What you put in you get out of it. In fact you get double what you put in.”

Banned motorbiker jailed after crash

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A DISQUALIFIED motorcyclist who failed to heed a give way sign and collided with a car in Springvale has been jailed for one month.

Osman Dogru pleaded guilty to charges including careless driving at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 8 February from a video link in Port Phillip Prison.

He is serving a 31-month jail sentence for assaulting, falsely imprisoning and threatening to kill a former girlfriend as well as drug trafficking.

The court heard that Dogru had

taken a friend’s motorcycle - with his girlfriend as a pillion passenger - for a quick trip for cigarettes on 6 February 2014.

Dogru, whose licence had been disqualified for two years at the time, rode west on Whitworth Avenue and failed to give way to a car turning right from Lewis Street.

Despite an emergency braking manoeuvre, Dogru struck the front right corner of the car and he and his passenger were thrown from the bike.

The passenger, screaming with pain from her injuries, was aided by witnesses and later hospitalised.

Dogru ignored a request to “wait for the cops” and rode from the scene without exchanging details with the driver or calling for an ambulance.

The motorbike’s owner picked up Dogru, who was bleeding and with two broken fingers. The accused self-administered bleach and methylated spirits on his wounds.

Dogru was also charged with a further riding a motorbike while disqualified and without a helmet in Heatherton Road, Springvale on 21 January 2014.

He told the court he had “flipped out” because of a combination of

anxiety, depression and drug abuse but had since “learnt a lot”.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the size of Dogru’s current jail sentence handed down by the County Court.

“You would never give anybody more than that (for those offences).”

He jailed Dogru for a month, to be served concurrently with his prison term.

The accused was also fined $1000, which can also be converted and ‘paid’ through his existing jail time.

Dogru is due for release from jail on 27 July.

Noble Park Community Action Forum member Ian Laidlaw said the suburb had been held back by the three level crossings and the ensuing traffic delays for 90 years.

“It’s fantastic to get rid of the level crossings. It will change the community but I’m disappointed it’s not underground.”

Mr Laidlaw said he didn’t want spaces under elevated rail lines, which had become “wastelands” in other parts of Melbourne, such as Queen’s Bridge and Huntingdale Road.

Dawn Vernon, who lives 12 houses from one of the level crossings, said the project would bring together parts of Noble Park which have been long separated by rail tracks.

She supported the concept “as long as it’s not too noisy”.

Others at the community action forum at the Paddy O'Donoghue Centre in Noble Park on 10 February railed at the lack of meaningful consultation, claiming the Level Crossing Removal Authority had made no mention of sky rail in a meeting with residents last year.

None of the residents at that consultation wanted rail tracks elevated above roads, a forum member said.

There were hopes for more car parking at the Noble Park railway station to be revamped and shifted closer to Heatherton Road under the project.

IN BRIEF Station evacuated after grenade handover A MAN armed with apparently good intentions and two found grenades has unwittingly caused the evacuation of Dandenong police station last night.

The man arrived at the station’s front counter about 5.50pm on 8 February, handing in old hand-grenades that, he said, he found in a Pakenham playground two weeks earlier.

The station was immediately evacuated and cordoned off with an exclusion area, Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton of Greater Dandenong CIU said.

An Australian Defence Force expert, who was called in, deemed the grenades were inert and took them away for destruction.

Meanwhile the police station’s reception area had been shut down for at least two hours, Det Sgt Kirton said.

“He had the right intent, but the execution was sadly lacking.

“The message we’d give the community is if you come across any explosive device, ammunition or firearm capable of discharging ammunition, call triple-zero.

“Clear the immediate area and don’t pick it up - and don’t bring it to the police station.”

Four charged over mugging A GROUP of four young males have allegedly twice mugged a person of his cigarettes and cash within minutes in Dandenong.

The three 19-year-old men and a 16-yearold boy, all of Dandenong, have been charged over the alleged robberies about 3am on 3 February.

The victim alleged he was punched in the face by one of the muggers, and robbed of his card holder, $100 cash and cigarettes by the group in Cadd Lane, Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton of Greater Dandenong CIU said.

The male, who was robbed and suffered minor injuries, then returned to his home nearby to collect more money to buy more cigarettes.

On his way back from a Coles supermarket that night, he had again encountered the gang on Lonsdale Street who took his new pack of cigarettes and $70 cash.

She told Parliament that hundreds of residents near the rail corridor were doorknocked the night before the 7 February announcement.

At Noble Park, she said the community wanted to get rid of the level crossings as quickly as possible with more public open space and car parking.

When asked if the public wanted rail above roads, there were a range of views collected at each of the

nine removed level crossings between Dandenong and Caulfield.

Ms Allan alluded to a flaw in underground rail projects, such as the Springvale Road level crossing removal.

“The challenge with that outcome is it continues to divide the community. It continues to have communities divided by a rail line.

“What this option does is allow for communities to be connected in a way they never have been before and provide along the corridor 11 MCGs of open space.”

WHAT’S IN A NAME DELVES INTO THE FASCINATING STORIES AND PERSONALITIES BEHIND SOME OF THE CITY’S BEST-KNOWN STREET NAMES. THIS WEEK THE JOURNAL LOOKS AT CENTRAL DANDENONG’S LANGHORNE STREET, NAMED FOR ALFRED LANGHORNE.

Stockman counted on his connections WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Alfred Langhorne.

BORN into a London family of merchants and stockbrokers, Alfred Langhorne longed to join his three older brothers in the new colony.

He arrived at Port Jackson in 1835 at the age of 17.

He joined his brother Charles working on a rural New South Wales property, learning the skills of stockmen.

When the property was sold a year after his arrival, Alfred and Charles embarked on a career of overlanding cattle and sheep from NSW to both Melbourne and Adelaide.

Langhorne Street in Dandenong and

Langhorne Creek in South Australia are named to acknowledge the direct connections to the Langhorne brothers.

Alfred was the first person Joseph Hawdon - the first white man to settle in Dandenong - saw when he arrived in Dandenong in 1839. Alfred was at the time overseer of 'Bigning’, the first run in the area, owned by his uncle Captain Lonsdale.

While in Adelaide on one of the drives, Alfred met the young and beautiful Sarah August and they married in 1841.

Mr and Mrs Alfred Langhorne were entertained for dinner by their neighbour Dr Farquhar McCrae in April 1842, indicating that Alfred stayed around the district for some time.

In 1845, Alfred and Sarah moved into their homestead at Laverton and made it their principle place of residence.

By this time Alfred opened an office in Bourke Street, Melbourne, and became a flour merchant.

Alfred continued to overland cattle and export sheep to Launceston, and owned various properties around Melbourne as well as property and wool stores in Williamstown.

In 1854, Alfred and Sarah decided to liquidate much of their assets and return to London to educate their two children, Robert and Alice.

Alfred returned to Laverton Homestead in 1867 after Alice died from diphtheria at age 13.

Sarah returned the following year, bringing Alice with her.

It was not unusual in those times to include deceased loved ones when moving

vast distances.

Robert stayed in England to complete his schooling.

Sarah passed away from Parkinson’s disease in 1871 and Alfred died three years later while a resident of a private hotel in St Kilda.

Robert was on a ship to Australia when his father died. With no close family or property in Australia he soon returned to England, never to see Australia again.

His descendants eventually migrated to Canada where they still live today.

Sarah and Alice are buried in the Williamstown Cemetery. Alfred is in the pioneers section at Fawkner Cemetery.

50 years ago 10 February 1966 Plea to Prevent C-Day rush on banks Dandenong - overcrowding of banks next Monday, C-Day could be lessened if customers used them only for urgent business transactions, president of Dandenong Chamber of Commerce, Mr Warren Titchier

said yesterday.

He said co-operation by the public could greatly assist the banks during the first few days of conversion to decimal currency.

Although all accounts would be in dollars and cents from Monday, there was no urgent need for customers to visit the bank about accounts, particularly savings deposits.

Some interesting things which will be in dollars and cents as from C-Day will be milk, bread, newspapers and bus fares.

A few important things to keep in mind are: All cheques must be written in dollars and cents as from February 14.

5 years ago 14 February 2011 Washed Out As water receded from the floods on February 4 and 5, residents saw the extent of the damage to their neighbourhoods.

It came without warning, with an almighty force and the recent flooding across Greater Dandenong affected almost every facet of the community.

Some of the worst hit areas included a Dandenong Go Kart track which was inundated with up to 4 metres of water.

Cash return for repairs THE Serbian Sports Centre has recouped a small part of a $150,000 federal grant that was taken away from it by the government in 2013.

The Bangholme-based centre, with the help of Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus, has recently secured a $18,000 Stronger Communities grant to replace its basketball hall’s painted concrete surface with floorboards.

Unfortunately, it won’t fix several of the centre’s other necessary works such as the court’s leaking tin roof and leaking LPG cylinder.

Rain drips from the ceiling to create a slippery floor and causes basketball games to be cancelled out of fears for players’ safety.

The hazards were to be fixed by the $150,000 grant, which included connecting the centre to a natural-gas street main.

Mr Dreyfus said the community would remember how the newly-elected Federal Government “ripped away” the grant.

“While this (new) funding only provides a small part of the lost $150,000, I was very happy to provide this support to the Serbian Sports Centre.”

The $150,000 grant, under the Building Multicultural Communities Program, was confirmed in a letter-of-offer by then Multicultural Affairs Minister Kate Lundy in August 2013 But then came the September 2013 federal election.

The government was replaced, the multicultural affairs ministry disappeared, the program slashed and the grant offer withdrawn by the Department of Social Services in December that year.

The sports centre, which had all but spent the funding, was unable to afford the works itself and made largely fruitless public pleas for the grant’s restoration.

According to its president Bob Stojanac, the community hub hosts about 1000 visitors and members of all ages and 20 nationalities, hosting free Friday night music for elderly people as well as sport.

He was unavailable for comment on the partially restored grant.

Park beating man is jailed

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN has been jailed for three years after repeatedly kicking and wielding a garden stake on another man lying on the ground at Dandenong’s Pop Up Park.

Nhial Nhial, 27, pleaded guilty to intentionally causing injury, affray, and committing an indictable offence while on bail over the incident on the Foster Street sports court at 9.30am on 10 October.

CCTV footage depicted a fight between a shirtless Nhial and the victim, who appeared armed with a bottle.

During the dispute, an unknown male hands Nhial a wooden garden stake, which with one blow felled the victim.

As the victim lay on the ground, Nhial struck him with the stake a further seven times and then kicked the motionless victim’s head twice.

Nhial wielded the stake three more times, each time lifting the stake above his head before delivering the blows.

According to a police summary, the victim appeared “helpless” and unable to defend himself during the “extremely violent” attack.

The victim was taken to Dandenong Hospital with a cut to his head, a broken left hand and an injured leg.

He was subsequently cleared of serious head injuries, which led to police dropping more serious assault charges.

Nhial was on bail at the time

for cannabis possession, obstructing an ambulance officer, resisting police, public drunkenness and abusive language in public.

Defence lawyer Chris Edwards unsuccessfully argued at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court for a community-based sentence.

Mr Edwards told the court on 10 February the Sudanese refugee had suffered persecution in his homeland and then been bullied and assaulted in Australia.

Mr Vandersteen said the “vicious” and “unrelenting” assault was too serious for Nhial to receive a community corrections order.

Nhial will be eligible for parole in 20 months.

Injuries after crane rolls A MAN was taken to hospital after a crane rolled down an EastLink embankment at Keysborough on Thursday morning, 11 February.

CFA duty officer Andrew Turner said it appeared the mobile crane had fallen from the edge of the tollway near the Cheltenham Road intersection, about 8.30am, and ended up on

its side at the bottom of the embankment.

“The crane is ended up on its side and the driver has managed to get himself out before emergency crews arrived,” he said.

“It appears the incident may have been the result of a mechanical failure but that will be subject to an investigation.”

Three Dandenong CFA crews used heavy haulage equipment to stand the crane upright. A crew remained on scene during the day.

The driver, in his twenties, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

One southbound EastLink lane was closed near the salvage operation.

WHAT do we know about the sky rail project?

As part of the $1.6 billion project, a 2.7 kilometre elevated viaduct will be built over the Noble Park intersections creating public open space beneath the line.

The government contends it will result in less rail noise at street level as well as significant improvements to traffic flow.

Six other level crossings will be eliminated, with elevated rail sections above six kilometres of newly-created linear parkland between Dandenong and Caulfield. Noble Park station will be rebuilt, shifted closer to Heatherton Road and be integrated into Douglas Street shops with a community plaza.

It will be more accessible for visitors to the nearby RSL, skate park and aquatic centre.

The government said the project will create more than 2000 jobs and be complete in 2018.

To further decongest traffic, a new road linking Ian Street and Leonard Avenue will cross the tracks.

Level Crossing Removal Authority chief executive Kevin Devlin said the project will boost rail capacity on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines by 42 per cent - and 11,000 extra passengers in the morning peak.

It will remove boom gates down for up to 87 minutes in the two-hour morning peak.

“The modern elevated design has been selected because we believe it is the best way to remove these level crossings and creates the best urban design outcomes,” Mr Devlin said.

“Modelling by acoustic experts has identified that the proposed design will result in an overall decrease in noise compared to the current rail line.

“We will be working oneon-one with residents who back on to the rail line, and will be looking at privacy and noise screening as well as vegetation and fence improvements.”

Bill and his wife Gwen feature on page 2 of this week’s paper as they prepare to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

“Marg was regular customer,” reminisced Bill.

“She would walk past every morning and wave.“ “She would always call me Mrs Toogood and Bill Mr Toogood,” added Gwen.

A REPORT of an interstate councillor’s death proved a trifle premature at a Greater Dandenong council meeting on 8 February.

A moving tribute was led for the man, who had often visited our municipality.

Some councillors gasped with shock - with good reason it turns out.

It was soon confirmed that it was a man who shared the same name that had died.

SPRINGVALE Asian Business Association president Daniel Cheng appears to be a man of hidden talents.

To top off this year’s wildly successful Lunar New Year’s festival in Springvale, Mr Cheng took to the stage with Elvis glasses, wig and dance moves.

INTERNATIONALLY renowned singer Silvie Paladino expressed surprise that it had been 10 years since she performed in the concert that marked the opening of the Drum Theatre a decade ago.

Ms Paladino told the audience that she had been drafted in to perform at the opening concert when Julie Anthony, who had been booked as the star attraction, fell ill.

“They asked me would I fill in and here I am again 10 years later.”

Ms Paladino performed Memory from the musical Cats and I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserable, among other numbers, to rapturous applause.

“What is a birthday without cake,” said Drum Theatre director Greg Hordacre before an enormous pile of profiteroles was wheeled on to the stage at the conclusion of Thursday night’s anniversary concert.

The audience and performers sang Happy Birthday before the ‘cake’ was eagerly devoured in the foyer.

ONE year after arriving in Australia, Hayuran Mahendiran and Farzana Nadiri have come a long way.

The pair battled language and cultural barriers before a Greater Dandenong Council’s Young Leaders program helped them find their feet last year.

Emboldened, they are staying on to mentor and inspire the program’s 2016 recruits.

Afghan-born Ms Nadiri wishes all young people including new arrivals could do the program.

“Especially when Australia is attracting so many migrants, they have to know about their new culture.

“It’s the best way to co-operate with each other.”

Ms Nadiri, 22, of Hallam, started the program just two months after arriving from Pakistan with her husband.

She was coming to terms with new cultural ways, language and the Australian accent, as well as suffering from depression.

She has left behind her parents and siblings to endure the atrocious targeted killings of Hazaras in Quetta, Pakistan.

“The people born here are very lucky and they don’t know that.”

In the past year, she’s won an Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship scholarship to take part in a leadership course for young women and brainstormed at a MyHack workshop for anti-radicalisation kits.

“The main thing is I’ve communicated with different types of people, learnt more about Australia as well as helped my leadership skills.

“If I hadn’t have done these programs, I wouldn’t be able to under-

The young leaders identified issues such as mental health and unemployment and learnt how to organise events to tackle them.

One of the young leaders’ projects was to raise mental health awareness by producing a video screened in front of 300 students at Dandenong’s Harmony Square.

Ms Nadiri hopes to mentor other young people whose mental health is wavering, as well as young victims of family violence.

“Many that I’ve met don’t know they have rights or where to go for help.”

In Mr Mahendiran’s case, the program helped him emerge from

painful shyness and make lifelong friends with other young leaders.

The 20-year-old Dandenong man had fled Sri Lanka as a refugee in 2014 and arrived in Australia with his father and sister later that year.

Half of his family wait in limbo in Indonesia. But at least they’re safe, he said.

After three months settling into Australia, a friend “dragged” him into the program.

“It was the platform for me to take the next step.

“It’s hard for us from different backgrounds but we feel we’re doing better with each day.

“There’s a lot of help out there.”

Mr Mahendiran was at first terri-

fied of serving customers as part of a hospitality training course.

Now he thrives on such encounters and recently presented in front of a forum of 200 people.

This year’s Young Leaders program is open to people aged 16 to 25 who live, work or study in Greater Dandenong.

The program teaches skills in public speaking, media and promotion, effective communication, conflict resolution, stress management and implementing projects.

It runs each Tuesday from 4.30pm to 6.30pm between April and October.

Council turns on car park

GREATER Dandenong Council has ordered a report on fixing problems at the much-maligned No 8 Balmoral Avenue car park in Springvale.

Since opening, the multideck car park has been plagued by broken-down lifts, ticket machines, boom gates and a tight first turn that has trapped some hapless four-wheel drivers.

Councillor Sean O’Reilly, in a report to the council’s 8 February meeting, stated the main problem was the car park’s “single exit lane for 700 car spaces”.

Star News has been told of instances where an operator has failed to respond when drivers have pressed the car-park’s panic button, such as when the exit boom gate is locked down.

The council will investigate the boom gate’s “down time”, the cost-benefit of having a fulltime attendant, and possibly replacing boom gates with payand-display ticket machines.

The investigation, due by 11 April, would also look at credit card touch panels at boom gates and a flat 50-cent hourly parking rate - alongside free Sundays and an early bird daily charge.

Cr O’Reilly said it was im-

portant to get right what was a “critical piece of infrastructure” in Springvale.

Councillor Yourhorn Chea said the car park always had problems.

Of its ticket machines, one was permanently broken, the other was sometimes working, Cr Chea said.

“I believe a (council) officer will look after the car park much better than a private one.”

Springvale Asian Business Association spokesman Stan Chang welcomed the report’s “positive type of improvements”.

“Because of the significant design flaws, the car park has become a big headache.”

Vandals wreck council's income PARKING revenue has taken a sizeable hit from ticket machine vandals, according to Greater Dandenong’s midyear performance report.

The council has collected $310,000 less in user fees in the July to December 2015 period - primarily due to an on-street parking fee shortfall.

The report blames vandals and a delayed installation of new ticketing machines.

Lunar festival’s new dawn

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS SPRINGVALE’S Lunar New Moon Festival has delivered a stronger financial return this year, declare organisers.

Springvale Asian Business Association spokesman Stan Chang said the festival’s losses were much improved from the 2015 festival’s blowout when it was organised by Greater Dandenong Council.

“Last year the council made a loss of more than $60,000. That’s even without the cost of police and public liability insurance.”

Mr Chang estimated that this month’s festival - which was back in the hands of SABA - attracted a crowd of up to 70,000 and would lose less than $15,000.

It had prospered due to the reduction

of “council red tape” as well as the help of its own event organiser, an improved stall layout and better weather on the day, he said.

The right balance between council support and SABA independence had been struck.

“Each minor decision (last year) had to go through three levels of council officers.

“This time there was more flexibility, especially as we got closer to the day.”

The event had not attracted many major sponsors but had many minor supporters to help offset the cost, Mr Chang said.

SABA would seek to fund-raise to pay for the outstanding loss.

“It was all very smooth. Every business there was making some money.”

Councillor Sean O’Reilly endorsed the event’s success under the energetic leadership of SABA president Daniel Cheng.

He said if SABA continued to meet health-and-safety requirements, he couldn’t see why it couldn’t continue to run the event.

The council stepped in ahead of last year’s festival after SABA threatened to withdraw from the annual event over an infringement notice in 2014.

At the time, Mr Chang claimed the fine for selling food after the festival’s permitted opening hours was unreasonable.

The infringement notice was withdrawn after negotiations between the council and SABA.

Council admits that residents want cap

GREATER Dandenong Council will face an “enormously difficult” challenge to win residents’ support for an exemption from rates capping, a council report has stated.

The report tabled at a council meeting on 8 February recommends an “engagement plan” for informing residents why it needs to charge higher than the State Government-imposed rate cap.

It argues that “widespread community dissatisfaction” will make it unlikely for the council to win a rate-capping exemption from the Essential Services Commission in future years.

“Without doubt, any increase in rate revenue is not a popular choice for residents,” the council’s report states.

“To achieve an outcome from community engagement where residents elect for higher rates is going to be enormously difficult to achieve.”

The council can apply to the Essential Services Commission for an exemption from rate capping on a yearly basis, but only if it’s engaged in prior community consultation.

Part of the difficulty is giving residents an “informed view” on the council’s costs and why higher-than-CPI rates are required, the report states.

The report discusses the use of community panels, online budget simulators, on-line forums and surveys to inform residents.

It recommends posting information in the council’s newsletter, website and social media as well as a mail-out in 2016-17.

Under rate capping, the council can increase rates by no more than CPI - or 2.5 per cent - in June’s budget.

This month, Mayor Heang Tak warned of the council facing a “big shortfall” in its financial plans.

The council forecasts a $3 million revenue shortfall as a result, which compounds to more than $50 million over the next five years.

Councillor Matthew Kirwan told the 8 February meeting that the forecasts were “worse than expected”.

Councillor Sean O’Reilly said the financial implications were the second biggest challenge; the “make and break” challenge was communication with residents.

He said councils were getting “squeezed from both ends” - with its costs being inflated by costshifting from other tiers of government.

Some councils published regular cost-shifting reports in response, he said.

GREATER Dandenong Council has blamed rising costs for the decision to end its free shuttle bus service in central Dandenong on 8 March.

The Greater Dandenong Free City Shuttle Bus, which stops at Dandenong’s shopping district, market, railway station and hospital, has been operating for 10 years.

In a statement, the council stated that the shuttle’s patronage fell from an average of 160 daily passengers to 68 in the past four years.

In the meantime, its cost had nearly doubled from $2.25 a passenger trip to $4.58.

Mayor Heang Tak said the bus had been introduced as a trial to help shoppers move around the central activity district. He said Harmony Square and Halpin Way developments had helped make it easier to walk from the train station to Dandenong’s centre. Public bus routes also travelled to the same places visited by the shuttle service, he said.

Delwyne Rayner, Branch Principal and Wealth Manager of Yellow Brick Road, Dandenong, said there were several advantages to buying residential investment properties.

“Firstly there is the obvious compulsory saving by capital gain,” she said.

“As a rule of thumb property usually doubles in value every seven to 10 years.

“Then there is the advantages of negative gearing tax savings. If rental income is less than the mortgage repayments, you can claim that loss at your tax rate.

“New properties can be depreciated heavily particularly over the first four years.

“Established property renovations can also be depreciated.

“As opposed to the share market, residential rental property can always be let, even in a recession, by slightly reducing rent.

“People have to have a roof over their head. This makes it easier for the investor to ride out a recession in the economy.

“You may see a large shift from the share market to the property market during tough economic times.”

Harry Li from I-Sell Springvale, one of, if not, the most awarded auctioneers in the whole of Australia, also believes there are plenty advantages in buying property for investment.

“First of all it has proven capital growth,” he said.

“In recent history (the past four to five decades) capital growth (for properties) was not only steady but consistent in value, and not as up

and down us other investments.

A lot less volatile, in fact.”

Harry said Melbourne, in particular, was always growing with new areas of development opening up.

“The population growth will always ensure a high demand for property in the market,” he explained.

“This area in particular is very much a growth corridor.”

“But like any investment it is always good to consider your financial capabilities first.”

He said it was important to seek professional advice from banks, accountants and other institutions and get the right advice before entering into property or any such investment.

Allison Grant, Director of Ray White Noble Park/Springvale, said that the substantial rises in property had made the market harder to break into, especially for first home buyers, and this had given way to

a different kind of rise – that of the “rent-investor”.

“Essentially, people rent a home where they would like to live but can’t afford to buy while investing in rental properties in more affordable areas,” she said.

“While you may be pining for that inner-city abode, it’s likely that your funds won’t stretch that far. Hence, the reason for looking homes for sale further out from the city and “rent investing”.

She said rent-investors would be able to use the yields to help cover the costs of maintenance and home loan repayments, while renting in their desired location.

“Property investment has a number of benefits to the real estate market and the overall economy, which is why the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has allowed for a plethora of deductions,” she said.

BY ANDREW PERKINS THE resurgence in the housing market in Melbourne has contributed to the strength of Melbourne’s growth area market.

Drivers of demand such as low interest rates, consumer confidence and above average population growth have also played their part.

Melbourne is still one of the most affordable and livable cities in Australia attracting local buyers and interstate buyers due to its continuous growth in

median house price.

Clyde has been an attractive area for home buyers due to its close proximity to the Monash Freeway, which is due to undergo a $400 million upgrade, amenities and parks but, most of all, its potential for future growth.

The median land price in Clyde and Clyde North is $236,000 while in Casey it is about $241,000.

Casey has one of the most expensive median land prices in Melbourne and is one of the fastest growth corridors.

The Clyde Creek PSP approved in December 2014 and Clyde North PSP approved in November 2011 has sparked a large

number of new land estates in the area by highly regarded developers including Frasers Property, Moremac, Pask Goup, Villawood, Brown Property Group and National Pacific Property and has adding approximately 20,500 new homes to the Casey shire.

With a total of 12 active projects and more than 400 lots available at any time, buyers have ample choice for land to suit all budgets.

CLYDE’S SOMETHING SPECIAL IS ON THE RISE

BY TANIA PHILLIPS CLEAN and green with two large town centres and plenty of schools in the planning, Clyde is the up-and-coming area in the Casey/Cardinia region, according to a local expert.

Shane Howard, director of KaiKura Land Sales and a man who has been in the real estate industry around the Clyde region for many years, believes that in 10 years’ time the area will be “something special”.

“Clyde is what I’d call the new Berwick,” he said.

“Everyone would love to live in Berwick because of the prestige of the place but there no new land developments coming through there.”

And while Clyde has always been a premier area over the past 30 years it is about to really come into its own over the next decade with plenty of major developments planned.

“In Clyde there is 2800 hectares of residential land that the government has put aside for residential development - most in the Clyde Creek vicinity.”

He said the emphasis had

been placed on providing green areas and walkway bridges across the creek.

Clyde Creek Precinct Structure Plans, which was approved in November 2014, sets out the planned development of a mixed use precinct which will ultimately provide 7500 jobs and 13,900 new homes, as well as supporting services and infrastructure.

The precinct extends from Hardys Road in the north to Ballarto Road in the south, and from BerwickCranbourne Road/ Clyde-Five Ways Road in the west to Pound Road and Bells Road extension in the east.

Casey Fields South Residential PSP sets out the development of a new residential community of about 1460 new homes and facilities and services to support a new community.

This plan applies to the area bound by Clyde-Five Ways Road to the east, Casey Fields Boulevard to the west, and north from Ballarto Road to the southern Boundary of Casey Fields sports fields.

“It is truly the up-andcoming area for the region,” he said.

Drum beats for the heart

By NARELLE COULTER BALLOONS and streamers rained down on the Drum Theatre on Thursday night as the arts hub rolled out the red carpet for a spectacular 10th birthday party.

Opened on 11 February 2006 by then Premier Steve Bracks, the Drum has hosted more than 1650 performances in the ensuing 10 years.

Among the invited guests were founding members John and Joan Mallard.

The couple attended the inaugural opening concert and are still passionate advocates for the Drum.

“We love the people, the atmosphere and most of all the staff,” said John.

“The staff are friends of ours.”

“They are friends with everyone,” added Joan.

New member Liz Philippe was there with her friend Luisa Elder, both of Keysborough.

The friends are particularly looking forward to Opera Australia’s staging of The Marriage of Figaro later this year.

“I like the theatre and I belong to a theatre group,” said Liz. “My father used to take me to the theatre when I was little and I haven’t been able to afford to do that with my grandchildren until now.

“I am retiring this year so there are lots of shows at the Drum I’m going to take them to. You have to take them young or they won’t like it.

“The Drum caters for everybody.

It’s accessible and diverse,” added Luisa.

Lynette and John Mitchell met at a Back to Dandenong dance at the Dandenong Town Hall 31 years ago.

John’s father once owned a bicycle shop in the old Vanity Arcade.

They are musical fans and have been Drum members for almost 10 years.

Former City of Dandenong CEO Colin Dickie said when he was in charge of the city the Drum was just a “twinkling in the eye”.

He and wife Susan were delighted to see how the venue had thrived over the past decade.

“It has put Dandenong on the cultural map, bringing wonderful shows here and it has preserved the town hall

facade incorporating a modern performing arts centre,” Colin said.

The night held special significance for Helen and Maddi Streefkerk, wife and daughter of the inaugural Drum director Paul Streefkerk who died suddenly in 2009.

Helen said Paul would have been proud that his vision continued to thrive a decade on.

“I’m sure he would have been very proud. When you look back on those early days he had a real vision.

“He was a real advocate for the multi-cultural side of Dandenong. He wanted to bring in all different groups to perform here,” Helen said.

Illusionist Cosentino, who is performing in China, sent a video message saying the Drum had been vital to launching his early career and urged people to support local theatre venues.

Drum director Greg Hordacre said the Drum had been vital in “stepping up and telling the Dandenong story”.

“Theatres belong in the heart of

communities and this remains one of the best theatres in the country.

“We continue to welcome the best performers in Australia to perform on our stage.

“It plays a part in promoting Dandenong as a unique, accessible destination and a fantastic place to live, work and play.”

SHOPPERS were confronted by bare chested warriors performing traditional Maori war dances as Dandenong Market celebrated Waitangi Day on Sunday 7 February.

Waitangi Day commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on 6 February 1840 which made New Zealand a part of the British Empire, guaranteed Maori rights to their land and gave them rights as British subjects.

Maori cultural troop Te Hononga O Nga Iwi paid tribute to their ancestors with a suite of traditional songs and dances.

Other highlights were a traditional weaving workshop and free moko body art where stencils are used to create intricate designs with face paint.

One of Dandenong Market’s favourite new street food vans, NZ Street Food, served hangi, a traditional dish made with chicken, lamb, potato, pumpkin, sweet potato, cabbage, stuffing and fried bread.

Other delicious NZ delicacies included raw fish, mussel fritters, NZ kina, fried bread burgers, pulled pork with coleslaw and steamed pudding with custard.

Hoaxes taken seriously POLICE say they will continue to respond swiftly and thoroughly to school bomb threats despite a spate of hoaxes in recent weeks.

Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton estimated that up to 10 primary and secondary schools were evacuated in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia in the first week of February.

He said on each occasion, schools were evacuated while police searched for any safety threats, he said.

“If further hoaxes occur in the future we will prioritise the safety of the students and schools in general.”

Keep it locked GREATER Dandenong police have issued a warning to car-owners to lock up after a recent spike in thefts from motor vehicles.

Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton of Greater Dandenong CIU said the reported thefts were widespread in the municipality, mainly from unlocked cars parked in the street.

“There’s a bit of a burden on the owners of the vehicles that they ensure if they park in the street that they lock the vehicle and don’t leave valuables in the vehicle at any time.

“If off-street parking is an option - particularly if there’s a garage or secure area to park - it’s a much safer way to ensure you’re not a target.”

Thieves tended to steal loose change and electronic items that were often in view inside the car.

“We keep giving out the message,” Sgt Kirton said.

“Unfortunately, people aren’t listening but, obviously, the criminals are and they are taking advantage of it.”

Councillor floored THE Springers Leisure Centre floor needs $75,000 in repairs to alleviate safety concerns surrounding delamination.

Greater Dandenong Council allocated the necessary cash in its 2015-16 mid-year budget review.

In December councillors voted to fully reallocated a $2.07 million surplus from its original budget, but not without debate about fixing Springers’ delaminated. Councillor Maria Sampey questioned why the floor at the YMCA-manager centre needed such pricey repairs - and why the council was footing the bill. “They wreck our facilities and then we have to fix it,” she said.

But community services director Mark Doubleday said experts had examined the floor and could not attribute responsibility for the damage or find a cause.

He said it was creating a safety hazard and the council deemed the repairs a necessity.

Walker aims to step it up

By JARROD POTTER LEADING her side on and off the field is the number one aim for Dandenong Stingrays captain Georgia Walker.

Returning to the Stingrays Youth Girls Academy top mantle for a second year, Walker, 17, from Rye, is keen to push the side to new heights in the inaugural AFL Victoria Youth Girls Academy Challenge, starting Sunday 21 February.

Walker, who will be supported by Stingrays vice-captains Jordy Allen and Taylah O’Hagan, did not expect to receive the job once again but was thrilled to get another chance to take the Academy reins.

“I was actually really shocked at first when I was announced as captain, as I didn’t expect it,” Walker said. “I was captain last year as well, but I was so excited and absolutely honoured - especially in my last year of Youth Girls.”

The Academy Challenge is a new direction for the Youth Girls program, moving into a homeand-away season for the first time in the history of the girls’ game.

It’s a small step for year one, but Walker was thrilled to be part of the new-look competition and see what the Stingrays can do on the bigger stage.

It’s so exciting - I can not wait,” Walker said.

“Last year we only had the carnival with the couple of games on the weekend and that really took a toll on the body ... but for it to be similar

“Hopefully they’ll eventually be able to do the whole season like the boys and be able to play more games - especially coming in with the women’s comp - it’s exciting to see the game develop.”

From pulling on the boots as an eager junior all the way to the peak of her junior football, the rapid growth in the game has astounded the fleetfooted midfielder.

That growth - especially from the juniors making their way in the game - has kept Walker on her toes as she knows last year’s standard just won’t cut it.

“The talent that had come through this year, it’s stepped up immensely,” Walker said.

“The fitness of the girls, the intensity, the ability to kick and the basic skills - it’s really exciting to see.

“It keeps a lot of the older girls, the seniors now, to keep pushing ourselves as the younger

girls are so much better and pushes us to get better as well.”

Walker encouraged local footy fans to get along to Frankston next week and support the side in its debut match this week, as the Stingrays are set to play a fast-paced and physical brand of football.

But it’s not just the on-field success that drives her.

Creating a culturally sound and inclusive club for junior girls or the graduating senior players alike is Walker’s aim.

“Last year was the first time I’ve ever been captain in anything, so that was really cool, this year I want to have more confidence in myself being a leader,” Walker said.

“When I first started as a 14 or 15 year old, I was quite intimidated by the older girls so I want to be able to bring the group cohesion and bring the group a lot closer together so the younger girls feel welcome.

“Emphasis on the team spirit - I think that’s important, especially for the younger girls developing their football as they’ll be there for the next three or four years.”

It starts a hectic year for Walker, who is set to play for Rye Youth Girls, attempt to make the Vic Country squad as well as get a few games for Seaford in the inaugural Women’s VFL competition.

The Stingrays Academy starts its season on Sunday 21 February, at Frankston Oval at 10am, against Sandringham.

By JARROD POTTER MAKING her way back across the pond for another WNBA campaign, Dandenong Rangers’ great Penny Taylor will resume life in Phoenix after signing on for the coming season.

Taylor, 34 who started life in basketball at Belgrave South Red Devils, has returned to the premier competition as she returned to her beloved Phoenix Mercury for a crack at a fourth WNBA championship.

The Opals’ star swingman - who is set to play a massive role in Australia’s Olympic Games roster this year - will don the purple and orange for a 12th WNBA season.

The two-time WNBA All-Star will re-unite with championship-winning team-mate Diana Taurasi and the tandem will light the court up according to the Phoenix’s management.

“If Diana Taurasi is the heart of our franchise, Penny Taylor is the soul,” Mercury general manager Jim Pitman said on WNBA.com “Not only is she one of the greatest players in the history of the women’s game and one of the driving forces behind our three championships, she is a great team-mate, a leader, a calming force on the floor and in the locker room.

“She has overcome injuries and setbacks, and she relentlessly persevered as the ultimate professional to get back on the court and help lead us to the title in 2014.”

Taylor sits second on the franchise’s alltime list for games, points, assists and steals.

Her short and sweet 2014/15 WNBL season - returning to play for the first time in a domestic season since 2002 with Dandenong - was capped off with selection in the WNBL All Star 5.

Taylor won a FIBA World Championship gold medal with the Opals in 2006 and was named MVP of the tournament.

She’s also a three-time WNBA champion and three-time all-star in addition to winning championships in her time in the Italian, Russian and Turkish leagues.

Brothers show their style NIMBLE swimmers from Oasis Otters Swimming Club excelled at last week’s state sprint championships.

Champion brothers Hamed Afshin Azar and Sam Afshin Azar took on the best in the state at the Swimming Victoria Sprint Championships, held last weekend at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

One of the speedy Otters brothers made the podium with Hamed earning two medals at the meet.

He was just edged into silver in the under 15 boys 50 metre backstroke by three-tenths of a second to Traralgon’s Locke DeGaris and had another strong finish to get a bronze in the 50m butterfly.

Older brother Sam pushed hard for the under 17-18 boys 50m breaststroke, finishing seventh.

The duo will be quick out of the blocks at the upcoming Oasis Otters Community Swimming Carnival, held on Saturday 5 March at Noble Park Aquatic Centre (NPAC).

Coxy’s big breakthrough

By JARROD POTTER DDCA TURF 1 - ROUND 10 (Day 1) WHEN the highlight of the day happens in the opening overs, as it did for Springvale South, that can only point to a difficult day in the field.

SPRINGVALE SOUTH v HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS The hosts never stood a chance as Heinz Southern Districts (7/256) batted out the day, thanks in part to an extraordinary second-wicket stand from Matt Cox (138) and Brad Downe (49).

From the highs of getting Cobras’ opener Trevor Davies (0) out for a blob, the match soon spiralled out of control for the Bloods.

Four first choice bowlers out of the equation - with Tim Ford, Malinga Bandara, Jackson Sketcher and Jarrod Armitage unavailable - left a heavy bowling burden on Nathan King (4/76), Matt Wetering (2/67) and the skipper Craig Slocombe (0/32).

King stormed in with the new rock, shaking off the boiling-hot conditions to try and keep the Cobras’ second-wicket stand from blooming.

But no matter what he did, Cox and Downe smashed apart anything thrown at them, particularly Cox as he hit his way back into form.

After a number of starts and none particularly seized upon, the onus was put on the skipper by none other than himself.

Flaying the Bloods - especially on the offside through the covers - Cox raced to his fourth DDCA century while Downe played a subdued role excellently, rotating the strike to leave Springvale South without many options.

Finally an opportunity came as Downe hit out against King, but by then the damage was done.

In the last 10 overs Cox, Michael Davies (15) and Ryan Davies (15no) started smacking the stuffing out of the weary bowlers.

By JARROD POTTER WNBL - ROUND 17 A DISASTROUS 40-point loss on the road to Townsville has put a dent in Dandenong’s momentum heading into the WNBL finals series.

Closely contested through the first half, Dandenong’s resolve was shattered after the main break as Townsville unleashed an awe-inspiring 9-35 third quarter to emphatically snare the victory.

The Fire took a clean sweep of the series in the 89-49 rampage over the Rangers, who were running on fumes after three road games in a week.

Dandenong’s tall brigade was monstered defensively by the Fire’s four-and-five arsenal and the story wasn’t much better in their own half, shooting only 27 per cent from the floor.

Opals tandem Suzy Batkovic (24 points, nine rebounds) and Cayla George (14 points, 17 rebounds) got it done on the scoreboard to wipe the Rangers out on their whirlwind trip to Queensland.

Former Ranger Natalie Novosel (20 points) finished the job for the Fire, giving the northerners a one-match break atop the WNBL ladder over Dandenong with a game in hand.

The task at hand was made more difficult with Sara Blicavs (eight points) finding foul trouble to cap off a disastrous night for the visitors.

Dandenong starters Steph Cumming (13 points) and Annalise Pickrel (12 points, 10 rebounds) led the green-and-gold offence on an off night across the board.

VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET - ROUND 15 (Day 1) THE downward decline towards the end of the season might have begun, as Dandenong (191) valiantly battled in an up-hill fight.

Facing top-of-the-ladder Fitzroy-Doncaster (0/45) is headache enough for most sides.

That wasn’t bad enough though as the Panthers also need to look for outright victories - with the gap to the top-eight currently sitting at 10 points.

It made the weekend particularly challenging at Shepley Oval and a tough task was made all the more difficult early as the skipper Tom Donnell (0) lost his pegs instantly, scarcely troubling the scorers.

With Fitzroy-Doncaster’s man mountain Trent Lawford (3/57) bowling hand-grenades from his cannon-like arm, the Panthers’ top order had to brace itself for chaos.

Brett Forsyth (49) countered the barrage with an onslaught of his own - picking off Lawford, Chris Moore (2/37) and Matthew Frith (1/23) as he got his eye in.

But the problem plaguing Forsyth’s season to date - plenty of uncashed starts - continued as he

struck out against Steven Duckworth (2/40), the fifth time this season the Dandy opener has fallen in the 40s.

Thankfully for Dandenong the next mainstay was ready to get stuck into the Lions.

Star all-rounder James Nanopoulos (55) resumed the challenge Forsyth first undertook and struck his way into his second half ton of the season.

The middle order folded around Nanopoulos as the side’s youth couldn’t cement themselves to the crease, but thankfully a wiser head was on his way.

The renewed fight-back came from David Alleyne (32), who stuck fast to Nanopolous to add 47 for the sixth scalp.

Nanopoulos held on as long as he could to guide the side towards 200 as some waging from James Wilcock (7no) put the last few scores onto the board.

The Lions batted out the last 20 overs comfortably, which now leaves all of Saturday in the bank. It’s plennty of time to chase down the Panthers and all but lock in the minor premiership heading into the final round.

Cougars rally in pre-season

By JARROD POTTER SHAKING off the rust on its 2015 championship defence, Keysborough Cougars went through the ringer in an up-tempo pre-season clash against McKinnon.

Held between the BIG V’s Cougars sides, the annual Cougar Cup was on the line at Springers Leisure Centre, giving the local fans plenty to cheer about on Saturday night.

The three-clash showdown, won by the side with the most cumulative points across the fixtures, was retained by McKinnon but not after some impressive work from Keysborough.

Showing how far the local BIG V side has progressed, Keysborough’s women - now coached

by Scott Middleton - started the clash strongly to win by nine.

Despite a dogged effort, a complete mirror image of the first result faced the Cougars’ youth men, leaving the final clash a winner-takes-all battle between the Cougars’ combatants.

Showcasing two massive boons to the Cougars premiership defence, Dandenong SEABL champion Calvin Enge has switched across to the blueand-silver for his first BIG V campaign.

Coach Nathan Vogt has sized up the tall department and sought out more size under the ring.

The Cougars are also trialling American import Aaron Abram from Oklahoma Baptist University, Keysborough had the arsenal necessary to take it up to McKinnon and will make a decision on him joining the roster before the season begins.

While the gutsy Cougars’ effort wasn’t enough

to knock over the mighty visitors, falling just short in a nail-biting finale, there was plenty to be impressed about as the deep roster looked set to shine once again in 2016.

There are changes to the championship team, which beat Western Port in a three-game BIG V Division 2 Men’s grand final series.

The Cougars’ core remains pretty much untouched at Springers in 2016, but there are a few outs. They lost Andrew Lowe and Robert Ostojic to retirement while Malcolm Heard was unable to return for a second season as Keysborough’s import.

The club’s senior single presentation will be held at the Clayton Bowls Club on Saturday 27 February from 7pm. with tickets available via the club.

THERE are two ways to handle relegation.

It can batter and bruise your confidence, sending your club spiraling even further down the ranks ... or it can be a line in the sand.

The latter is where Dandenong Thunder’s new-look side has set its sights.

A devastating 2015 left the local side relegated from NPL to NPL2 East and with many from that side leaving the black-and-red, it forced the Thunder to rebuild entirely.

Under new coach Huss Skenderovic, the Thunder has retooled the entire list and brought in a good mix of experience and youth alike.

Former Adelaide and Melbourne A-League midfielder Kristian Sarkies leads a list of impressive ins for the Thunder.

Also joining Dandenong in 2016 are Brandon Barnes, Nicholas Modaffari, Amir Osmancevic and new goalkeeper Fraser Maclaren add to the familiar faces in Brendan Elmazovski, Veton Korcari and Safa Faisal at George Andrews Reserve.

While it’s a step-by-step process to move back into the top flight, Skenderovic and his charges brought an impressive attack to its final pre-season hit out on Saturday night.

Facing NPL side FC Bulleen Lions, neither side could hit the scoreboard - remaining nil-all through the first half.

A penalty strike from Thunder’s Osmancevic was saved by FC Bulleen - the best chance of either side before the break - but the home side managed to open the accounts first after the resumption.

Dandenong broke the deadlock early in the second half with some turnover wizardry via Daniel Bennett to set up the goal.

The Lions fought back to level the ledger but it took a bit of ageless Thunder wisdom and skill to get the side home.

Korcari timed an exceptional header at the near post to beat the Lions’ keeper and take the Thunder’s first big scalp of 2016.

It wasn’t a fluke win over a high-ranking side according to the coach, as wins like that are what Skenderovic thinks the side can achieve throughout the season.

“Dandenong Thunder is a big club and we know where it belongs and sometimes you take two steps back to go forward again,” Skenderovic said. “We’ve rebranded the whole club in regards to the football department and the coaching staff and the people we’re bringing here.

“It’s exciting times for Australian football and also within Victoria and us being a good club, we’re not looking at it thinking we’ve been relegated.

“We believe we’re an NPL team and that’s where we want to go back.”

Off-field change has been important to the

new campaign, with Skenderovic bringing his experience from the United Arab Emirates to the transitional group ahead of next week’s season launch.

“It’s been a transition period obviously for the club moving forward and also for a new team and it has been a challenge,” Skenderovic said. “But at the same time a fruitful one as we’ve brought in some great characters and great individuals and you can see by the spirit and how we’ve built this team.“ Dandenong will host Nunawading City in NPL2 East’s round one on Saturday night while Springvale White Eagles hosts Goulburn Valley and Dandenong City is away at Murray.

MOTORING Here’s looking at you, Kia KIA’S all-new Sorento has gone ultra stylish.

The all-new Kia Sorento is offered in Si, SLi and Platinum grades.

Even the Sorento Si is well equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, power windows and mirrors and wood-look interior trim.

The SLi has 18-inch alloys, the wood-look is extended to the steering wheel and centre console and there are sporty looking alloy pedals.

Topping off the range is the Sorento Platinum with a huge sunroof, 19-inch alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel and a more powerful stereo.

A feature we particularly liked in the Sorento Platinum is the choice of two-tone interior trim.

The third generation look-at-me style certainly drew more than its fair share of looks during our test period.

Sorento’s front end is big and bold, the bonnet is high and the grille has the familiar new-Kia design. Large cutouts for the foglights add to the effect and give it a bold wide look.

The side profile also takes the big ‘n’ bold look with a deep window line that continues all the way to the rear.

Sorento Si has an AM/FM audio system with six speakers.

Big, bold and practical, the all-new Kia Sorento has a lot going for it.

There’s MP3, Bluetooth streaming, USB and Aux. Sportage SLi and the Platinum we tested used an Infinity Premium 10-speaker system with sub-woofer and external amplifier. The system is operated through Kia’s audio-video navigation (AVN) system using a 7.0-inch TFT LCD touchscreen.

The new Kia Sorento comes with a choice of petrol or diesel engines.

The petrol powerplant is only offered in 2WD models. As befits its heavier duty use the diesel is used in Sorentos with all-wheel-drive.

All Sorento models have a sixspeed automatic as manuals are rapidly becoming a thing of the past in Australia.

Sorento has a five-star safety rating from Australasian NCAP. There are six airbags, including front-torear curtain coverage. All models have ABS with brake assist, ESC, VSM (vehicle stability management), a rear view camera, front and rear parking sensors and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

The Platinum as tested added Lane Departure Warning, Smart Cruise Control, Blind-spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert to the driver safety aids.

The front seats are large, comfortable and support well.

The second row pews can slide back and forward to juggle space.

In their rearmost position they

provide a huge amount of legroom for their occupants, meaning four large adults can travel in comfort if the back seats aren’t in use.

The rearmost pair of seats and the centre seat in the second row are best left for children on anything other than short trips. The practical squared-off tail lets you carry a decent amount of luggage even when all seven seats are in use. With the seats down it’s positively cavernous.

The centre-row seat has a 60 /40 split with a central panel that can fold down to become an armrest or opened all the way to allow for through loading of long items.

The body of the gen-three Kia Sorento has significantly increased rigidity over the previous model and also uses a lot of sound dampening materials.

On the road we found the big Kia SUV to be smooth, quiet and comfortable.

Sorento’s suspension and steering have a lot of Australian input.

This firms it up in road grip without any great loss of comfort. The Sorento can be set to Sport or Eco modes - as keen drivers we preferred the Sport setting.

Handling is competent, though don’t expect it to compete with the big name German SUVs in this class.

Sorento is a large vehicle tuned for family comfort ahead of sporting pretensions.
