‘Lost’ gold mine below Newtown Big discovery for ‘amateur’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A forgotten piece of Geelong’s history revealing that Newtown was a centre of the 1850s gold rush has been accidentally uncovered by an amateur historian.

Newtown’s Chris Ganly discovered that seven mining companies sank a dozen shafts up to 30 metres deep and tunnelled 70m under Mercer’s Hill in search of an elusive gold mine.

He reveals the hunt in his book Gold on Mercer’s Hill. While trying to uncover the story Mr Ganly found that it had been largely lost in the pages of history, he said. “One Saturday afternoon when speaking with my neighbour I was somewhat surprised to learn that gold had apparently been prospected for in a nearby street, Prospect Road,� he said. “That one conversation sparked my interest to discover what had taken place; where and what, if anything, was left behind. “When I started out on the research I didn’t intend to write a book but one thing led to another and before I knew it I had something of a story that I thought others might be interested in and enjoy.�

Mr Ganly said the seven companies and prospecting operations raised capital of up to ÂŁ2000 to search for gold under the Newtown hill between 1851 and 1878. “Despite all the indications of the futility and the failures of the past, each new endeavour attacked the hill with gusto and each one ended in complete failure,â€? he said.

Mr Ganly follows the story from the first recorded “discovery� of Newtown gold in 1851 at the height of the Victorian rush. The story proceeds through to the last organised attempt of the formally registered Chilwell Gold Mining Company in 1879.

The book recounts the exploits of each mining attempt and follows the suburb’s development into a leafy residential area.

Train-builder denies fault

By ALANA MITCHELSON Train manufacturer Bombardier has denied responsibility for wheel-wear issues that have thrown Geelong-Melbourne rail services into chaos.

The quality of the wheels on V/Line’s VLocity trains had “nothing to do” with the wearing problem, Bombardier’s Loulou Hammad said.

“We stand by our product and preliminary investigations have ruled out that the wheel wearing could be a manufacturing fault.”

Ms Hammad said Bombardier was responsible for VLocity train maintenance “but we don’t have anything to do with the tracks”.

The problem has forced V/Line to replace some services with buses, extending travel

times for commuters.

Public Transport Users Association Geelong branch convenor Paul Westcott said V/Line had identified two ways to reduce the wearing.

“V/Line has reduced the speed of trains around sharply curved bends in the track, especially at the overpass into Southern Cross Station and at the point where the Geelong and Ballarat lines join near Deer Park Station,” he said.

“It’s also been applying grease lubrication to the inner surface of the rail and V/Line says that’s had an effect on wheel wear, so that in itself might give people an indication as to what’s causing the problem.”

Mr Westcott said the results of an investigation into the wearing, to be released in March, should identify who was responsible.

“If it’s found to be an issue with the Regional Rail Link then it would be the responsibility of the Regional Rail Link Authority, which has ceased to function.

“If it’s an issue with the specifications given to the authority, such as lubrication or the shape of the rails, then it would come down to the Department of Transport.

“If the problem is to do with the operational procedure, for example the trains are travelling too fast, then it would be V/Line’s responsibility.

“If it was to do with lack of vigilance concerning maintenance procedures then that could fall on Bombardier or V/Line depending on who communicated what to who and when,” he said.

Couple opens up home as a sanctuary

Police are hunting a murderer over the shooting of a man in Bell Post Hill on Tuesday night.

Police believe the shooter might have fled in a dark-coloured sedan after the incident on Anakie Road which killed convicted criminal Paul Cochrane, 36.

Lorne probe

A COUPLE has risked careers and home to help normalise disability in the Geelong community.

Ocean Grove’s Marie Rodgers and Jay Davis quit jobs in the disability sector to open their home as a bed-and-breakfast respite for parents of people with “high functioning intellectual disability”.

The response to Better2gether had been overwhelming, Marie said.

“It seems to have hit a need in the community.

“We’re regularly contacted by people who’ve never been able to get respite from caring from a son or daughter.

“With the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) there’s opportunity for people like Jay and I to open our own service.

“It’s been hard work but we’ve done it and we’re making people happy, assisting them to grow as people, experience community connections and develop their skills.

“We have families that have never had a break and are using our B-and-B for the last eight months. And we’re booked in for the next 12 months.

“We’re making a difference by tailoring the stay to particular needs and interests. Some might need more behavioural or social intervention and support.”

The service was helping three young disabled men to prepare for moving into their own homes, Marie said.

Australia’s corporate watchdog will investigate allegations that BP is blocking a local competitor from returning fuel supplies to Lorne, according to Corangamite’s federal MP. Bank scam A national phone scam has tangled up the region’s Bendigo Bank branches, according to Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

The scam sent an SMS with a link to a website, which was identical to the bank’s, in the hope of capturing customer account details, ACMA said.

Gran to skydive in bikini

A grandmother in a bikini will skydive over Torquay after overcoming a series of health and financial setbacks.

Sandra Northey, a lawyer turning 52 this month, will leap into her 1000th skydive while piggybacking wingsuit-wearing friend Goz Za more than four kilometres above the Surf Coast.

Ms Northey said she had renewed confidence and inspiration after years of chronic anxiety and fibromyalgia, a chronic pain disorder that left her incapacitated for two months. â&#x20AC;&#x153;From my mid-30s I could feel my condition just getting worse and worse. During those two months when it got really bad Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;be crawling across the floor in pain,â&#x20AC;? she told the Indy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a really slow recovery process but I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give up.â&#x20AC;?

Ms Northey simultaneously experienced heightened anxiety and a swallowing disorder that required surgery, she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been through two broken marriages and got into some financial trouble when trying to start my own business. I came close to filing for bankruptcy at one stage.â&#x20AC;?

But she has now run her own northern Victoria law firm since 2008, specialising in conveyancing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a big undertaking. It was like having a baby,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m certainly in a good place right now. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m happy with my body, my health and my energy levels. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Because I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always had my health and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve hit rock bottom, I appreciate it all a lot more.â&#x20AC;?

Ms Northey began skydiving five years ago after her three children had grown up. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was at the stage where I felt more freedom in my life. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted to use my 1000th dive milestone as an opportunity to reach out to other middle-aged people, especially women, and to inspire them that you can stay fit and active well into your 50s. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m living my dreams to the fullest and getting more enjoyment out of my life than ever before.â&#x20AC;?

A Highton man allegedly launched a sex assault on a disabled man in a Belmont public toilet, police said yesterday.

Police alleged the man, 66, followed the 24-yearold wheelchair-bound victim into a Barrabool Road toilet block about 4pm Wednesday.

Senior Constable Wesley Martin said the victim was left traumatised. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The victim went home and told his carer. Local waiting times for ambulances have increased under the Andrews government, according to the opposition.

Response times for non-critical code-two calls in Geelong were nearly two minutes longer, while code ones at Queenscliff increased by two minutes and eight seconds. Code two times increased in 18 of 36 regional centres measured and code ones were worse in 13, the opposition said.

The figures reflected a state-wide trend in regional areas, said Liberal regional health parliamentary secretary Margaret Fitzherbert. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Daniel Andrews has been in charge for well over a year now and needs to stop blaming others for ambulance response times getting worse in Geelong,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If it was a crisis then, what is it now?â&#x20AC;?

South Barwon MP Andrew Katos said the Government had promised improved response times. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is another broken promise from the Andrews government. This is an issue of life or death,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Katos said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Before the election Daniel Andrews told us

there was an ambulance crisis, yet under him response times have gone backward in Geelong. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Geelong patients are suffering because he has failed to invest in ambulance services despite all his promises. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all talk and no action.â&#x20AC;?

The Indy reported in October that Golden Plains Shire had one of Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worst code one response times at almost 22 minutes.

Ambulance Victoria has a target of 15 minutes for 85 per cent of code ones.

The service admitted that response times must improve and blamed record demand.

A spokesperson for Ambulance Services Minister Jill Hennessy said response times were improving in Geelong and state-wide. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re starting to see evidence that the ambulance system is beginning to recover after four years of crisis and neglect under the previous Liberal Government,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In Geelong, the most recent response time data shows the local average response time has improved by 11 seconds as compared to the same period in the last months of the previous Liberal government. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a small but promising improvement.â&#x20AC;?

Footy club chiefs call for change

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AFL Barwon should delay its promotion and relegation system for local football until the impact of new equalisation measures was known, club and league presidents said on Thursday.

North Shore Football Club’s Dale Purcell said local leagues needed to first experience the new salary cap and points system for players.

“As clubs we understand the region’s growing and AFL Barwon wants to see growth and participation in football but... the timeframe for this restructure is not right.

“If there’s little or no impact in three or four years then maybe we need to say the restructure needs to happen.

“After all, we (Geelong) are the guinea pigs in this and it’ll be brought in state-wide next year, so we need to give that a good run and see what happens.”

Geelong and District Football League (GDFL) president Neville Whitley said local footy had other pressing issues besides introducing a new system.

“The way junior football is organised needs a review, with strong clubs fielding a number of junior sides and struggling clubs with too few

juniors coming through.

“Struggling clubs have problems with juniors and that exacerbates their situation.”

Mr Whitley said his experience with relegated clubs was that they lost players, sponsors and competitiveness, making promotion difficult.

“We understand parochialism and protection of your own backyard can come into it but we should let the points system and salary cap be in for a few years.

“This just seems to be the way AFL Barwon believes is best for football but only time will tell.

“It looks like their way or the highway. They said there’s no vote to be taken, it will be left to the

AFL Barwon commission. That’s very undemocratic. I’d have thought stakeholders would have a say in the way they want the commission to go “If a majority don’t want it they should be listening to them.”

South Barwon president Richard Holz said his club still needed to digest AFL Barwon’s “detailed” presentation on the changes this week.

“There are a few things as a club we’ll be looking at but, overall, we are pretty happy.

“The promotion and relegation criteria needs to be explained more.”

Bunny ‘blast’ offer

Geelong Field and Game’s Blair Findlay said local hunters would assist free of charge.

Mr Findlay said hunting was an option in addition to poisoning programs.

“We understand that hunting is not necessarily always suitable in every circumstance but it’s just another form of conservation. The benefits are that farmers don’t have to worry about inadvertently poisoning stock or wildlife.

“It also ensures the rabbits are utilised and their death isn’t wasted. It gives

Doors close on flagship stores Geelong’s two Jaffle Jaffle stores and its Jeep clothing outlet have collapsed into voluntary administration.

The flagship Westfield Geelong Jaffle Jaffle store has already ceased operations.

Gideon Rathner from Lowe Lippmann was appointed as administrator in late January for Jaffle Jaffle Group Pty Ltd. Jaffle Jaffle also operated a store at Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre and in Collins Street in Melbourne’s CBD. The chain was founded in 2014 and sold a range of gourmet toasted sandwiches.

Its menu included the egg, bacon, cheese, spinach and relish Wakey Wakey and Grand Toastie with virginia ham, cheddar cheese and roma tomatoes.

SmartCompany reported that employees at Jaffle Jaffle’s Melbourne store were told the store would cease operating on Wednesday.

Jaffle Jaffle’s website and social media accounts were still online on Wednesday morning but had

not been updated for two weeks.

Director Clayton Thompson founded the successful Spud Bar food chain more than 10 years ago.

The company behind the Jeep retail chain, Revolution Brands, has also collapsed into voluntary administration.

Cor Cordis Chartered Accountants is acting as the company’s external manager.

The first Jeep clothing store opened just 10 years ago but expanded to 20 stores nationwide, including the Geelong outlet, which is still trading.

The administrator said the Jeep stores would remain open while pursuing a sale of the business as a going concern.

A number of high-profile retail brands have collapsed into administration in the past few months, including homewares business Laura Ashley and electronics chain Dick Smith.

There was no indication of the number of staff affected by either collapse.

One revved up mechanical career

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Little did the then-16-year-old Matt Scharf know that dropping in at Mercer Street’s Moto Tech dealership to buy parts would lead to an award-winning career.

The teen got to know dealer principal Tim Fisher when he kept coming in to buy parts for motorcycles he was repairing for friends and family while still in high school. Mr Fisher said he was amazed at Matt’s technical knowledge at such a young age. After meeting with Matt’s parents, he offered Matt an apprenticeship with the team at Moto Tech.

Four years on, Matt completed his Gordon Institute apprenticeship in record time, along the journey taking out the Victorian Motorcycle Apprentice of the Year.

Matt is now in the running to take out the national Motorcycle Apprentice of the Year award,

to be decided at a ceremony in Tasmania in March.

He was nominated by Gordon teacher Dallas Jones for the coveted award after completing a Certificate III in Automotive Mechanical Technology last year.

Among the honour of the award, the winner also takes home a motorcycle as part of an array of prizes.

Mr Fisher said Matt was one of the hardest working team members he has ever had.

“Matthew has never had a sick day, or a day off in four years, outside normal holidays, and has adapted to spare parts interpreter or to doing bike sales, if at times he has been required to do so.

“Matthew spends his time outside work either fixing up bikes and cars for himself and friends, or going bush on two or four wheels.

“If Matthew is a good example of today’s youth, I believe the future of Australia is in really good hands.”

The convoy concludes in the Geelong Showgrounds where a free family fun day will take place.

Bosses hit by underpay demands

BACK-PAY: Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James.

The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) has recovered $268,000 for 83 underpaid workers in Geelong in the last financial year.

The amount included back pay of $19,000 for the former manager of a business at Barwon Heads and two employees at a Geelong eatery who were underpaid $6600.

Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said the Barwon Heads employee was paid a flat weekly salary that failed to cover penalty rates or entitlements for working on public holidays.

She said the business failed to pay the employee more than 300 hours of accumulated annual leave or to keep proper records.

Fair Work inspectors discovered the underpayment when they investigated a request for assistance from the former employee, she said.

In another case, a random audit at a Geelong eatery revealed that two employees were underpaid a total of $6600.

One of the workers, an Indian national employed as a cook on a 457 skilled worker visa, was underpaid $4700, Ms James said.

Both businesses back-paid their employees in full without the need for enforcement action after Fair Work inspectors contacted them, she said.

“Employers must ensure they are aware of the minimum hourly wage rates and penalty rates that apply to their employees.

“Simply putting an employee on a salary or a flat rate does not relieve an employer of the obligation to ensure that all Award entitlements are being met.

“Employers also need to be aware that they must maintain proper employment records and issue pay-slips on a timely basis.”

The Fair Work Ombudsman recovered $22.3 million for 11,613 underpaid workers nationally in 2014/2015, with $7.59 million recovered for 4809 workers in Victoria.

Poverty bad to the bone: study Poverty contributes to osteoporosis, Geelong research has found.

The Deakin University research showed that the stress of social disadvantage could put people at higher risk of developing the condition.

Dr Sharon Brennan-Olsen, who heads a Geelong-based IMPACT Strategic Research Centre, led an international team of researchers on the study.

The results suggested that stress associated with social disadvantage triggered a genetic response, putting people at higher risk, she said.

“Over the last few years our research has shown that there is a social gradient of osteoporosis, whereby people of lower socioeconomic status are at higher risk.

“What we have not known is why.

“We have shown that in addition to other factors that have direct impact on bone health such as physical activity and diet, the stress of social disadvantage causes physiological wear and tear on the body.

“This sets off a chain of biological events that turn off certain genes and ultimately weaken the bone structure and increase the chance of developing osteoporosis.”

Dr Brennan-Olsen said further research could identify the genetic mechanisms altered to cause the increased risk.

“While we don’t yet have the full picture, the insights we now have into the genetic mechanisms that impact bone health strengthen the importance of lifestyle changes and stress-reduction programs to help reduce health inequities across social groups.”

The research team’s work has been published in Bone, a leading international health research journal.

Boating ‘magnet’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Boating could become Geelong’s new growth industry with the right sort of investment and support, according to an industry group.

Boating activity in the central coast area, including Geelong, would double by 2050, said Boating Industry Association of Victoria chief Steven Potts.

“Geelong has embraced the bay and it can be a real driver for employment in the boating industry,” he said. “Destination boating will become a major focus so the region needs the investment to encourage that.”

Mr Potts said that bay access for boaters was still the number one issue. He said Geelong could become a “magnet city” for boating tourism and lifestyle.

“Between Werribee and Geelong there is little access and we need to protect this wonderful asset by working together ... people will travel from all points to visit Geelong, along with the spending on boats and on lifestyle,” he said.

Mr Potts repeated his call, which was reported in the Indy last month, for the State Government to back the association’s proposed Blue Infrastructure Fund to cope with growing long-term demand for water access in Victoria.

The boating industry also offered job opportunities that could help Geelong’s transition from other former manufacturing industries, he said.

A marine centre of excellence in Geelong would help stimulate the regional economy while complementing the 4000-berth Nelson Cove project, touted for Moolap’s disused salt pans, Mr Potts said.

WORK BEGINS: A concept image of the new Corio kinder and health centre.

Centre of health A NEW $4.5 million kinder and health centre is on the way to Geelong’s northern suburbs.

Construction of the Hendy Street Child and Family Centre was scheduled to begin in September, City Hall announced this week.

The city-funded facility will include a kindergarten, maternal and child health consulting rooms, outdoor playgrounds, a multi-purpose playgroup room and a parents’ lounge.

The council appointed Perkins Architects, which also designed similar centres at Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove and Windsor Park, to begin work on the plan.

Councillor Tony Ansett said the centre would be a “great benefit” to young families in the northern suburbs.

“Corio is a location that has been strategically selected as an area in need of an early learning centre due to the growing number of families and young children.

“I look forward to construction beginning later this year.”

Cr Kylie Fisher said the centre was the city’s latest investments in developing children’s earlylearning centres throughout Geelong.

The council opened “integrated children’s centres” last year at Grovedale, Corio, Leopold and Barwon Heads and at Ocean Grove in 2014, she said.

“It’s vital to provide young families with accessible early learning centres where they can develop their skills and have social interaction.”

The Hendy Street facility will replace an existing Corio Maternal and Health Centre, William Hovell Kindergarten and former Rosewall and Corio South kindergartens.

City Hall said the plans go on display at Hendy Street Community Hall, William Hovell PreSchool Centre and Northern Bay College Hendy Street Campus from Monday.

I agree with KW Oakley (Letters, 5 February) about Barwon Water resorting to punitive bullying tactics by outsourcing a debt collector to follow up bill payments.

I recently I needed to discuss my bill and called Barwon Water during normal business hours before and after Christmas. The office was close at 3pm on 18 December. I called back on 30 December to be told the office was closed until 4 January.

The debt collector soon after sent me an imperative to call Barwon Water immediately in relation to my bill!

A government-run service that makes itself un-contactable during business hours but employs a debt collector who insists the consumer calls it immediately? Sounds to me like a service that just doesn’t give a damn.

The reported mass conversions of Muslim refugees in Europe to one of the many branches of Christianity is a cause of very real concern.

The conversions are, generally speaking, opportunistic. Converts are told they stand a better chance of winning asylum status in Europe if they convert.

More importantly, they’re told it’s unlikely they will ever be sent back to their countries of origin, where they would usually face a death sentence.

Being desperate, many foresake the faith of their fathers, so their conversion is suspect, to say the least!

The churches concerned stand condemned for their manipulative cynicism, emotional exploitation and naked attempt to increase diminishing flocks.

People with businesses in Geelong have a vote for their residence and another if paying rates on a business property. I was surprised to be told this. Business owners only need formally apply for the second vote. It seems extraordinarily remiss of council not to have informed traders of their rights over the many years since the Local Government Act was introduced.

Do good for asylum-seekers A large crowd attended a rally in Geelong on Monday to support those affected by a recent High Court ruling on deportation to Nauru of people seeking asylum in Australia.

The rally condemned the demonising of refugees by the Australian Government and the opposition.

The rally called for progressive, legal and compassionate policies, including the closure of offshore and onshore detention centres and to permanently settle in Australia those deemed to be refugees under the refugee convention.

The rally applauded Premier Daniel Andrews’ offer of sanctuary in Victoria for the 267 people threatened with deportation to Nauru.

The punitive approach toward asylum seekers is not consistent with the values of decency and compassion.

Political courage and moral leadership are required from the Government and the opposition.

Renewed hope for endless oil Oceanography at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA, claims that new findings do not support the theory of fossil fuels’ being the result of the deterioration of biological material deposited eons ago under heat and pressure.

New research indicates that hydrogen-rich fluids venting at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean in hydrothermal fields were produced by the abiotic synthesis of hydrocarbons in the mantle of Earth.

The abiotic theory of the origin of oil directly challenges the conventional scientific theory that hydrocarbons are organic in nature.

While organic theorists have posited that the material required to produce hydrocarbons in sedimentary rock came from dinosaurs and ancient forests, more-recent argument has suggested living organisms as small as plankton might have been the origin.

The abiotic theory argues, in contrast, that hydrocarbons are naturally produced on a continual basis not only within the mantle of Earth but throughout the solar system.

It is now believed oil seeps up through bedrock cracks to deposit in sedimentary rock and that traditional petro-geologists have confused the rock as the originator rather than the depository of the hydrocarbons.

If this theory is correct, fossil fuels are a valid renewable-energy source.

As I understand him, Svante Arrhenius was a clever but modest man who didn’t think he said the last word on carbon dioxide (CO2) and warming.

However, if, as Mr Tuisku says, he could “predict the temperatures we now see at current CO2 levels“, that’s more than the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change can do with its expensive computer models that show a temperature in excess of observed temperature by a factor of 2.5 to three times, thus invalidating their hypothesis.

“When you’re playing live and use so many effects pedals, something invariably falls out or they’ll be too much smoke on stage and we can’t see hand queues, so you have to be ready to adapt quickly.

“I think it actually makes a live set more fluid and natural.

“I get a lot of my inspiration from this beautiful old organ my uncle gave me. It has this magical old presence about it, in this ’80s-Nintendofairytale kind of a way.

“I think that’s reflected in our new music.”

NEW ALBUM: Art Vs Science returns to Geelong next month for the first time in over four years.

Electro-pop dance band Art Vs Science returns to Geelong next month with new tunes and a colourful live set.

The Off the Edge of the Earth album tour will bring back the ARIA-award-winning act for its first show in the city since 2011.

Guitarist Dan McNamee said fans could now expect a new record annually after waiting four years for the follow-up to the band’s debut release.

“In 2011, we were a bit burnt out, not only after all of the touring but just from growing and changing as people,” he told the Indy.

“When there’s that much drinking and smoking and being out all the time it can be tough, especially when you play a couple of shows that don’t go well and that does happen.

“We’ve really found our way and we’re back in a good space.

“Our new music has a sort of Gorillaz flavour to it. It’s still dance music but it’s a bit more anchored.”

McNamee tried his hand at directing the band’s music video for latest single Chosen One, with the clip depicting the band’s adventures on tour.

“We do try to get the most out of touring," he explained.

“I once went on a six-day camping trip with the boys to the Overland Track in Tasmania. One night we were attacked by possums – there were all these little beady little eyes surrounding our tent.

“We were, like, lying head-to-toe in this tiny tent. It was very close quarters for three grown men.

“I’ve also been on some really nice walks. In Perth, I woke up really early one day because I was still jetlagged and walked along the Swan River and watched the sunrise.”

Battle for laughs the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to perform in So You Think You’re Funny?

The Aboriginal Comedy Allstars Showcase is billed as a unique experience featuring four of Australia’s brightest comedy stars: Matt Ford, Shiralee Hood, Kevin Kropinyeri and Dane Simpson.

Ford is the latest in a squad of young talents rapidly establishing themselves as the next generation of Australian stand-up comedians.

Hood boasts of surviving only-in-Australia incidents such as Canberra bushfires and knocking out her front teeth while swinging on a Hills Hoist.

Kropinyeri, described as Australia’s premier Indigenous comedy star, promises a high energy whirlwind, sharing tales of growing up, marriage and the particular, absurd challenges of life as an Aboriginal Australian family man.

Simpson’s cheeky online sketches, such as Chips and Devon, have won him a following on Facebook.

An all-star comedy weekend begins at Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) tomorrow.

Fledgling comedians will sweat it out in a Geelong qualifying heat of Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Raw Comedy competition tomorrow before Australia’s best Aboriginal comics take to GPAC’s Drama Theatre stage on Sunday.

Part of the Melbourne festival since 1996, Raw Comedy is Australia’s biggest and most-prestigious open mic competition for comedians.

Past winners and finalists include Chris Lilley, Josh Thomas, Hannah Gadsby, Wil Anderson, Peter Helliar, Claire Hooper, Tim Minchin and Geelong’s own Jonathan Schuster.

Comedian Geraldine Hickey, shortlisted for a Piece of Wood award at the Melbourne festival several times, will MC the Geelong heat.

The judges will be local trio Ed Dolista, Scott Popovic, who appears in comedy festival James Bond-spoof You Only Laugh Twice, and Trent Intrusi, starring in Oklahoma.

GSO sounds off Geelong Symphony Orchestra (GSO) will hold its inaugural concert this month after attracting more than 60 of the region’s finest classical musicians.

GSO will perform The New World at Deakin’s Costa Hall on 26 February after being launched late last year.

GSO’s program for The New World will impress and inspire lovers of fine music, with Rachmaninov’s much-loved second piano concerto to be performed by celebrated concert pianist Kristian Chong.

One of Australia’s leading pianists, Chong has performed throughout Australia and the UK, and in China, France, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, USA, and Zimbabwe.

As a soloist, he has appeared with the Adelaide, Melbourne, Queensland, Sydney and Tasmanian symphony orchestras, as well as orchestras in the UK, New Zealand and China.

The concert will also feature Dvorak’s great symphony From the New World and Nicolai’s sparkling Overture to the Merry Wives of Windsor.

The orchestra’s inaugural conductor and musical director is the highly regarded Joannes Roose, musical director of the Melbourne Sinfonia for the past 20 years.

Roose studied conducting in Vienna and worked with schools, universities and orchestras in several Australian states before calling Inverleigh home.

GSO President Wendy Galloway said she was thrilled that the new orchestra has attracted such a strong field of the region’s best musicians.

“Geelong has many fine musicians who are experienced and well trained, but until now have lacked the opportunity to come together as a symphony orchestra under the baton of a skilled professional conductor,” she said.

“The GSO has filled this gap – and our first concert will be a gala event showcasing the region’s considerable talents.”

Sandstone Cafe believes Valentine’s Day isn’t the only day of the year that couples should be able to have a romantic evening out.

This Valentine’s Day, the Sandstone team have a special three-course menu for $39 per person from 6pm on 14 February. Bookings are essential for this special occasion.

Owner and renowned local chef Simon Parrott said Sandstone Cafe is the ideal location for a dinner date.

“It’s intimate. Our tables aren’t positioned too close together, so couples have their own space,“ he said.

“It’s not a packed out pub. There are no big screens or pokies. People can actually talk to each other and bond. That’s what it’s all about.”

He said the Valentine’s Day menu is featuring a

choice of “individual delights” of meat, vegetarian or seafood tasting plates.

A shared dessert platter of many flavours and textures, including pudding, sorbet and panna cotta will end the night on a sweet note. Tea or coffee is included.

The all-new Kia Sorento is offered in Si, SLi and Platinum grades.

Prices begin at a reasonable $40,990 for a petrol two-wheel-drive Si and run up to $55,990 for a Platinum with the turbo-diesel and all-wheeldrive.

Even the Sorento Si is well equipped with 17inch alloy wheels, cruise control, power windows and mirrors and wood-look interior trim.

The SLi has 18-inch alloys, the wood-look is extended to the steering wheel and centre console and there are sporty looking alloy pedals.

Topping off the range is the Sorento Platinum with a huge sunroof, 19-inch alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel and a more powerful stereo.

A feature we particularly liked in the Sorento Platinum is the choice of two-tone interior trim.

The third generation look-at-me style certainly drew more than its fair share of looks during our test period.

Sorento’s front end is big and bold, the bonnet is high and the grille has the familiar new-Kia design. Large cutouts for the foglights add to the effect and give it a bold wide look.

The side profile also takes the big ‘n’ bold look with a deep window line that continues all the way to the rear.

Sorento Si has an AM/FM audio system with six speakers.

There’s MP3, Bluetooth streaming, USB and Aux. Sportage SLi and the Platinum we tested used an Infinity Premium 10-speaker system with sub-woofer and external amplifier. The system is operated through Kia’s audio-video navigation (AVN) system using a 7.0-inch TFT LCD touchscreen.

The new Kia Sorento comes with a choice of petrol or diesel engines.

The Sorento’s four-cylinder 2.2-litre turbodiesel is a unit already familiar to us from other Kia models but has had significant changes.

In its latest iteration it produces 147 kW of power and a big 441 Nm to torque, the latter from 1750 rpm to 2750 revs.

The 3.3-litre V6 petrol is an all-new design and puts out 199 kilowatts of power and 318 Nm of torque.

The petrol powerplant is only offered in 2WD models. As befits its heavier duty use the diesel is used in Sorentos with all-wheel-drive.

All Sorento models have a six-speed automatic as manuals are rapidly becoming a thing of the past in Australia.

Sorento has a five-star safety rating from Australasian NCAP. There are six airbags, including front-to-rear curtain coverage. All models have ABS with brake assist, ESC, VSM (vehicle stability management), a rear view camera, front and rear parking sensors and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

The front seats are large, comfortable and support well.

The second row pews can slide back and forward to juggle space.

In their rearmost position they provide a huge amount of legroom for their occupants, meaning four large adults can travel in comfort if the back seats aren’t in use.

The rearmost pair of seats and the centre seat in the second row are best left for children on anything other than short trips. The practical squared-off tail lets you carry a decent amount of luggage even when all seven seats are in use. With the seats down it’s positively cavernous.

The centre-row seat has a 60 /40 split with a central panel that can fold down to become an armrest or opened all the way to allow for through loading of long items.

The body of the gen-three Kia Sorento has significantly increased rigidity over the previous model and also uses a lot of sound dampening materials.

On the road we found the big Kia SUV to be smooth, quiet and comfortable.

Sorento’s suspension and steering have a lot of Australian input. This firms it up in road grip without any great loss of comfort. The Sorento can be set to Sport or Eco modes - as keen drivers we preferred the Sport setting.

Handling is competent, though don’t expect it to compete with the big name German SUVs in this class.

Sorento is a large vehicle tuned for family comfort ahead of sporting pretensions.

The variable settings do make it better than average for the Asian class but if you’re looking for driving excitement, forget it.

During our test period fuel consumption of the turbo-diesel was in the nine to 10 litres per 100 kilometres range in around town driving, dropping to six to eight litres when on the open road or motorways.

Kia’s all-new Sorento offers a nice combination of style, carrying capacity and sophistication and is already making a name for itself on the new-car sales charts.

The Barwon River remained a productive option over the past week for anglers prepared to put in the effort.

Alanna Weight and partner Marcus Anyon finished soft plastics above the Sheepwash on Sunday morning, with Marcus managing four fish of 59cm, 65cm, 66cm and 85cm in four casts. Determined not to be outdone, Alannah changed her retrieve to a slow roll and immediately caught a quality 70cm fish on 5lb line.

The pair released all the fish, while quality trevally were also moving around the estuary.

Justin Burns and Phil Nelson headed out from Queenscliff on Saturday, anchoring on the grass beds and putting in a light burley trail in the hope of whiting. They eventually bagged on fish from 30cm to 40cm as well as a couple of trevally to 45cm.

Justin and Phil later headed up toward the mouth of Swan Bay where they bagged out on squid. G. Gancraft jigs particularly effective, they said.

Justin also fished Corio Bay’s innerharbour on Sunday with Simon Williams, focusing on the structures around the western shoreline. They caught plenty of pinkies to 40cm, with Gulp Crabbies working well.

Heading out to Curlewis on Saturday six-year-old Amelia Murdoch, 6, finished with grandfather Barrie off Curlewis on Saturday in the hope of catching some flathead. The pair managed plenty of quality fish, with Amelia catching a specimen of 57cm.

Tackleworld’s Kevin Hunter headed down to Portland on the weekend to fish an ANSA convention. Kingfish were at the top of anglers’ hit list, with plenty of fish captured.

Gavin Malony managed the highestpoint-scoring king, a fish of 5.8kg that he caught on 6kg line. Other notable captures were Glenn Miller’s 12kg southern bluefin tuna on 4kg line and plenty of salmon to 3kg.
