JUST days after the Queensland Local Government Council elections were announced, the Southern Downs Council was rocked by the news that one of its sittings councillors was no longer a councillor.

“Effective from Tuesday, 2 February 2016, Mr Jamie Mackenzie is no longer a councillor with Southern Downs Regional Council,” the council announced in a shock statement on Tuesday afternoon.

The council’s chief executive officer David Keenan said there would be no more comment on the matter and any further information should be sought from Mr Mackenzie.

However, yesterday, mayor Peter Blundell announced a special meeting of the council to be held on Friday to officially address the situation created by the necessity for Mr Mackenzie to stand down.

“While Mr Mackenzie and I have not seen eye to eye on many issues to come before the council ... it is important to recognise his need for privacy at a time like this,” Cr Blundell said. “I recognise the challenges of being consistently in the public eye and the organisation has offered Mr Mackenzie assistance under the Employee Assistance Program, should he wish to take up that offer.”

He said The Local Government Act 2009, Part 2, Division 1 - Qualifications of councillors, outlines the considerations councillors must give to their eligibility to perform the role and the Act clearly defines the circumstances that will disqualify a person from fulfilling the role of a councillor.

The Southern Free Times believes that under the act there are four grounds for disqualification treason, bribery or electoral offences; becoming a prisoner; being appointed to higher office (government); and bankruptcy. The Act also prescribes the process that the council needs to follow when a situation such as this occurs with the council spending yesterday ensuring the process and information was correct.

Torrens seeks Passionate about community seat on council WYBERBA resident and experienced town planner Leila Torrens has confirmed she is a candidate for the position of councillor in the upcoming Southern Downs Regional Council Election.

“My family and I have bought our first property in the Southern Downs region in 2008 and although we have had the opportunity to live and work overseas, this is where my husband Shane and I have decided to live, work and raise our two children,” she said.

“I have made the decision to

run for council because, like so many residents, I believe council is broken, has a lack of vision and poor recent financial management.

"We know the Southern Downs region can be a strong, vibrant economic hub and a preferred regional destination for business, agriculture, tourism and lifestyle.

“The current council debt has paralysed both the economy and the community. Current businesses are swamped by red tape and new businesses are choosing to locate in alternative

pro-active regions which offer incentives and support for development.

“Our enthusiastic and hardworking community is subjected to regular rate increases and dwindling service quality and delivery of services.

“The community sentiment is strong ... .we need council to make smarter decisions for a better future. The current councillors have led us to the situation we are in now: a new team, with new skills is the best opportunity we have to revive our community.”

Former mayor to stand again BONY Mountain resident, long-time teacher and sound engineer Phillip Buddle has thrown his hat into the ring for this year’s council elections.

Mr Buddle, a Uralla Shire Councillor from September 1995 to August 1999 (including a stint as mayor), said there was a need for rational thinking among the councillors.

“Common sense dictates that the large debt cannot be serviced though the rate structure,” he said.

“Savings have to be made

by cutting back on nonessential projects. Many of the residents of the region benefit from Centrelink being aged pensioners, disability persons and unemployed.

Their incomes are minimal.

“I am aware of some residential properties being rated at around $4000 pa.

“For this they have sewerage, garbage and water (at extra cost). Paying $80 a week when you own your home is excessive.

“Rates must be pegged, even reduced if possible,” Mr Buddle said.

ALLORA farmer and father of four, Scott Christensen has announced his intention to nominate for a position within the Southern Downs Regional Council.

Born in the local community, Scott and his wife of 24 years, Bronwyn, have consistently participated in the Allora area helping with functions and volunteering whenever they could make time away from family and business commitments.

“I was motivated to join the Southern Downs Regional Council to help the region recover from their current financial position,” he said.

With a family growing up in the region, Mr Christensen finds it necessary to improve upon the area and provide more sustainability for future generations.

“Being a representative on the local drought committee for the Queensland Dairy Organisation, I hear first-hand issues relating to drought and how the agricultural sector is coping.

“This, in turn reflects how the local economy is suffering in the outlying areas. Southern Downs is first and foremost an agricultural community dependant on all types of agriculture to support the towns, this support needs to be recognised and returned to the community.

“Tourism also has an important role in the local and regional economies of the Southern Downs Regional Council.

“Promoting the tourism industry in the region would help

With family and ancestry in the Freestone and Stanthorpe

regions, Mr Christensen looks to use his position to help the more rural communities of the region.

“I want to convey with committees and organisations across the region to try and accomplish an even keel for outlying and built-up areas.”

Mayor Peter Blundell congratulated Mrs Strand on her winning entry to the MY SDRC app promotion.

“It was my great pleasure to present Sarah and her son Rory, with a family season pass to WIRAC, their local public pool of choice, and to know that the whole family will benefit from this prize," the mayor said.

In response, Mrs Strand said, “We were so pleased to win. It was actually my husband who found the app and thought it was very useful, so he downloaded it and said, ‘quick fill this in so Rory can go to the pool and I can go with him’”.

“We’ve used the MY SDRC app several times already to lodge requests. In fact, when we moved into our current home we noticed that the kerb

“When we began the promotion in November last year, less than 500 people had signed up to the free MY SDRC app.

“As a result of the promotion, more than 700 people have now downloaded the app and accessing its many features and benefits, particularly the ability for residents to connect with council while ‘on the move’.

“As Mrs Strand has alluded to, the app offers a range of features to users such as ‘Fix it’ to report an issue to council, access to the latest council news, ability to contact councillors at a touch and access to council’s contact information.

“The app provides quick access to council’s social media and, importantly, particularly as we are now well and truly into the summer storm season, it has an Alerts page feature, which is a useful tool and can provide information in a disaster.”

Disaster session invite out Election date announced STANTHORPE residents are encouraged to prepare for bushfires and severe weather events by attending a disaster community information session on Thursday 18 February.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Community Engagement Officer Tracey Brown said residents in Stanthorpe surrounding areas lived in locations where bushfires or severe weather events had the potential to impact their home.

“By attending one of the free community information sessions at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre, local residents can ensure they have the techniques in place to protect life and property against these natural disasters,” Ms Brown said.

“Local firefighters, Rural Fire Service Queesland (RFSQ) and

State Emergency Services (SES) volunteers, Queensland Police Service (QPS) officers, paramedics as well as officers from the Southern Downs Regional Council and National Parks and Wildlife Service will attend the sessions, which will educate residents on the importance of working together, understanding the risks involved in living close to bushland or low lying areas and how to become resilient.”

The two community information sessions will be held at 10.30am and 5.30pm. Emergency services personnel will also set up an information stall at the Stanthorpe Piazza between 12.30pm and 4pm for any interested locals who would like to chat with us about their potential risks and emergency plans.

By TANIA PHILLIPS AND so it starts, the next Queensland local government elections were officially announced at the weekend with nominations now open for candidates.

The elections will be held Saturday, 19 March 2016 with the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) being responsible for the conduct of all Local Government Elections.

In conjuction with the Local Government Elections the State Government will hold a referendum on fouryear fixed terms for state parliament.

Mayors and Councillors are elected for a four-year term.

Local Government Areas are either whole of Local Government areas (undivided) or divided into individual divisions/wards (divided).

For the first time, the Southern Downs will be an undivided region

with no wards.

Meanwhile Queensland councils have welcomed the Palaszczuk Government’s decision to subsidise the cost of the 19 March local government elections in recognition of the impact of its move to hold a referendum on four-year parliamentary terms on the same day.

The Government agreed earlier this week to provide $3.7 million toward the cost of the council elections.

Local Government Association of Queensland chief executive Greg Hallam said the deal was a “fair and equitable” one for councils for having to accommodate the referendum on the same day as their elections.

“I thank the Government for negotiating in good faith and acknowledging that councils had a good case for compensation,’’ he said.

In brief Son assaults father, 78 A 24-YEAR-OLD man will appear in Stanthorpe Magistrates' Court charged with breaching a domestic violence order, serious assault, unlawfully using a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle following an incident in Folkestone Street, Stanthorpe, on Friday.

Police will allege that about 11am on 5 February a 78-year-old male was sitting in a vehicle, waiting for a bus with a woman when they were approached by the man’s son, partner of the female.

Officer-in-charge of Stanthorpe police Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said it was then alleged that the older male was threatened with violence before both he and the female sought refuge at a nearby service station at which time the offender unlawfully used the man’s Nissan 4WD. Witnesses reported the vehicle being driven dangerously through a number of streets in the CBD before the vehicle returned to the service station.

At this time, it is alleged the younger male ran behind the counter, and after locating a screw driver attempted to assault the older male causing a laceration to him.

Witnesses from nearby businesses intervened in the incident before the offender decamped.

Later, police located the offender in bushland, and after a brief pursuit took the man into custody.

French tourists threaten cop ABOUT 2am on Sunday morning, a lone police officer required assistance after a number of French nationals approached him in a threatening manner and were subjected to capsicum spray by the officer.

Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said this led to the arrest of two men, both 20 years of age, for public nuisance.

One of the men was further charged with possessing dangerous drugs and utensils after a quantity of cannabis and pipe were found on his person.

By TANIA PHILLIPS SOME of the top sporting teams in the world could be on the Southern Downs in the leadup to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018.

Southern Downs Regional Council is pitching to be part of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, with a pre-event training destination proposal launched late last week at the Warwick Hockey facility at Queens Park.

The “Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Pre-event Training Destination Proposal” showcases the best of the Southern Downs’ sports fields and facilities, covering 13 of the 17 sports to be represented at the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

Mayor Peter Blundell said the Southern Downs region had a proud and strong sporting culture across many diverse sports and was ideally positioned to the Gold Coast for teams considering locations for pre-event training.

“With the 2018 Commonwealth Games fast approaching, council saw an opportunity to showcase our region’s top class sporting facilities, such as the Warwick Hockey fields where we’ve chosen to launch the proposal, the 50 metre Olympic pool in Stanthorpe, shooting complexes in both Stanthorpe

Plan to tackle sticky issue of trade waste CHANGES to trade waste arrangements in the Southern Downs are being outlined in a proposed new Trade Waste Management Plan, released in the past week for public consultation.

Following adoption last year of a Trade Waste Management policy, Southern Downs Regional Council has prepared a draft Trade Waste Management Plan which seeks to manage trade waste at the point of generation, encourage the minimisation of trade waste, and protect wastewater infrastructure.

The council’s engineering services director Peter See said the draft plan outlined arrangements for Trade Waste Management practices in the Southern Downs region.

“All commercial, manufac-

turing or industrial business produces liquid wastes referred to as trade waste.

“Trade waste presents the potential to cause harm to people, the environment (air, land, water) and infrastructure and, as a result, disposal of trade waste must be regulated.

“Under the proposed plan, any commercial, manufacturing or industrial business that needs to discharge trade waste to the council’s wastewater infrastructure system would be required to seek approval from the council.

“The proposed plan gives those generating trade waste, control of how to mitigate their discharge. It’s based on the user/ generator pays principle, uses prioritised targeting based on risk classification and offers a simplified process to make it

easy to understand and implement.

“The overall aim of the plan is to encourage better social, environmental and economic outcomes, and the council is keen to collaborate with those businesses most likely to be impacted by the proposed changes through education, partnership and advice,” he said.

The Trade Waste Management Plan and associated documents has been on public exhibition for a period of three weeks, from Wednesday 3 February, at council community contact centres and the council’s website www.sdrc.qld.gov.au An online survey will also be available on the council’s website, for the same period, for community comment and feedback.

“We believe there’s an enormous opportunity to encourage countries, particularly those with an interest in track and field sports, to choose Southern Downs for their pre-event training.

“We also want to use the prospectus to encourage athletes and their families and friends to visit and enjoy the Southern Downs region during their stay for the Games,” he said.

Council called a series of meetings with local sporting organisations that covered sports that will be played during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, to gauge interest to participate in hosting a country or several small countries for preevent training.

“The sporting organisations responded energetically and enthusiastically, and a working group was formed to develop a prospectus and find interested countries,” the mayor said.

Suddenly we have back packer welcome parties and helping them with driver’s licences. Is this core council business?

There are a few questions the mayor might like to comment on as he cranks up for the March election.

Did the tourism entity have insurance for its first six months? What checks are there for the $470,000 plus investments by council in Destination Southern Downs?

Feelgood fallout MEMBERS of the Inglewood/Omanama community have voiced their overwhelming support for a chance to hear the other side of the story which is available when the Friends of Omanama host an open function in the MacIntyre Sports Centre, Inglewood, on 12 February.

The function is designed to give a balanced presentation of facts about the Regional and National consequences if Omanama (21kms East of Inglewood) is chosen as the site for Australia’s National Nuclear Waste Management Facility.

It was announced in November 2015 that Omanama is one of six sites short-listed to accommodate the facility.

Since then the community has been bombarded with government press releases, radio and TV interviews and government convened public meetings, consultations and meetings with individual local organisations.

As a result many locals have said they feel confused, intimidated and anxious about the future.

They have said they need to know more about the other side of the story.

Friends of Omanama co-ordinator Dr Colin Owen said the function was designed to inform the community about the nuclear waste dilemma and for everyone to hear a community perspec-

tive on concerns as opposed to the government agenda.

The guest speaker, via a video presentation, will be nuclear radiologist Dr Peter Karamosko, a member of the Medical Association for Prevention of War and public representative on the Radiation Health Committee of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency.

Joint presenters will speak on local research and issues.

Regardless of their views on the subject, every member of the community is welcome to attend the function.

Invitations are also being extended to the Goondiwindi Regional Council mayor and sitting councillors, neighbouring council mayors and councillors and nominees for the forthcoming council elections, the member for the Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg, retiring member for Maranoa Bruce Scott and candidate David Littleproud and the Hon Dr Anthony Lynham, Queensland Minister for State Development, Minister for Natural Resources and Mines.

The evening will conclude with a free sausage sizzle.

Violence under pressure DOMESTIC violence is getting out of hand, and this includes the killing of children.

There are a number of reasons why this happens.

For some women the carrying of children, birth and so on throws their hormones out of key.

They can’t cope.

They need more help but usually don’t ask.

The producing of children is a major pressure on the male and female for a number of reasons.

1. It means a change of lifestyle for both.

2. It can affect the health of the mother.

3. The child may not be from her male partner or suspected so. This is a major problem and usually leads to terrible violence.

4. Many males are straight-out bullies and can’t help themselves.

5. Finally there are those people who are living beyond their means. According to an adviser friend of mine named Glen Lamb of Legume who

Minister to open road upgrade

Vandals chop safety signs

By TANIA PHILLIPS VANDALS have been on a spree at Pratten over the past week causing major damage to number of curve alignment markers (CAMS).

Nine sets of markers were damaged and posts cut in the early hours of Thursday at the southern end of the intersection of LeyburnCunningham Road and Condamine River Road.

Southern Downs Regional Council’s Director Engineering Services Peter See said curve alignment markers are used to highlight sharp curves on the road network.

“The CAMS signs are an important road safety measure and if they’re missing, either from theft or vandalism, it potentially puts road users’ lives at risk,” he said.

“Furthermore, the cost to repair and replace the signs that have been damaged and stolen since June 2015 is nearing $20,000.

“Council notifies deliberate acts of vandalism like this to the police and council and the Queensland Police Service have been working together for some time in relation to the vandalism and theft of signs, with police running an ongoing investigation.

“Last week’s incident is only one of several acts of vandalism or theft of CAMS and other signage that have occurred in the Pratten area,” Mr See said.

About a week or so later the same thing occurred; 1 October 2015 - another 18 CAMS were stolen from the intersection of Leyburn-Cunningham Road and Condamine River Road; Late September 2015 - a site board was stolen from the Leyburn-Cunningham Road and Pratten Ryeford Road intersection; 9 September 2015 - another nine CAMS were stolen from the intersection of Leyburn-Cunningham Road and Condamine River Road; 9 July 2015 - discovered a further 12 CAMS missing from Dalrym-

ple Creek Road and Talgai West Road intersection; 1 July 2015 - discovered 25 CAMS signs had been stolen from the intersection of LeyburnCunningham Road and Condamine River Road; and Mid-June 2015 - 13 CAMS signs were stolen from the Dalrymple Creek Road and Talgai West Road intersection.

The CAMS are repaired by Southern Downs Regional Council on behalf of the Department of Transport and Main Roads because they are located on roads managed by the council under a maintenance contract.

The council urges anyone with information about the vandalism or theft of the CAMS or other signage to contact the Queensland Police Service through Policelink on 131 444, Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or by calling into their local police station.

A $2.38 MILLION road up-grade will be opened near Woodenbong on Friday.

NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Duncan Gay will officially open the completed section on the Mt Lindesay Road at 11.20am (NSW).

In 2014 Tenterfield Shire Council secured a special grant from the NSW Government conditional on Federal matched funding.

These funds were allocated for the upgrade of three sections of Mt Lindesay Road, west of Woodenbong, with these works being completed in 2015.

Tenterfield Mayor Peter Petty said although no Federal monies were forthcoming, Minister Gay was instrumental in ensuring the $2.38 million was retained.

The official opening of this section of work will be held on the Mt Lindesay Road, near Mt Clunie Road, approximately 10 kilometres west of Woodenbong.

The minister will attend a meeting of the Legume to Woodenbong Road Alliance at the Woodenbong Golf Club after the opening.

“Council encourages local residents, road users and interested persons to attend the official opening,” Cr Petty said.

“The minister needs to understand how important the upgrade of The Mt Lindesay Road is to this area, both economically and socially.

“To fully address the requirements of the 2014 Road Safety Audit, Mt Lindesay Road still requires a minimum of $23.575 million to realign/ construct and renew sections of the Mt Lindesay Road, with $8 million urgently required, and council and the local community need to maintain the pressure,” he said.

Kit to welcome residents in Casey’s tips

By JOYCE MARSH, WOODENBONG CORRESPONDENT THREE Woodenbong Central School students have been chosen to take part in the Australian Defence Force Gap Year Pathway over the past three years.

IN 2014, a rigorous Australian Defence Force selection process saw HSC graduates from across Australia choose an ADF GAP Year Pathway.

Of the 4000 plus applicants, 260 were chosen to participate in the 2015 Gap Year program, two were from Woodenbong Central School, Peter Rex and Hannah Geyer, and one, from St Mary’s High School, Casino, Elaina Elder-Robinson.

Peter, Hannah and Elaina joined 60 of those recruits who

were allocated to the RAAF, for “Airbase Security� roles.

Of the 60 initial RAAF recruits, 54 completed the 12 weeks of basic training at 1 RTU Wagga Wagga who then moved to RAAF Base Amberley, where they then joined the Fire and Safety School for a further 12week period of training.

On completion, they were deployed to a choice of five airbases across Australia, with Peter and Elaina remaining at RAAF Base Amberley, and Hannah, being deployed to RAAF Base Townsville.

The Gap year is structured in such a way that participants can either apply to join the ADF on a permanent basis, or as Reserves, once the 12-month programme is completed. Peter and Hannah

have applied successfully to rejoin.

They will be re-mustered into the RAAF’s Military Working Dogs Unit at Amberley, and on completion, they will be deployed to a base. Elaina has opted to further her studies, and will be attending the University Of Queensland in 2016, studying Nutrition. She will maintain her connection with the RAAF, as an Active Reserve.

But the story does not finish there: 2015 Woodenbong Central School graduate, Luke Weston, has been successful in his application to join the 2016 ADF GAP Year program, as an Army Rifleman.

He is one of 250 successful applicants for the army GAP. Luke will be based at Kapooka.

Help name those bad roads DOES the Southern Downs have some of the worst roads in Queensland?

That’s the question the RACQ is asking as part of a new survey launched last week.

RACQ has asked Queenslanders to name and shame the most dangerous and problematic roads across the state.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said the Club’s Unroadworthy Roads Survey 2016 was now underway, and was a quick and easy way for people to voice their concerns. “Whether it’s a street which goes under every time there’s

a hint of rain, potholes, a road that’s narrow, lacks overtaking chances or has hard-to-see signage, or even a spot where hazardous rubbish gets left constantly, we want to hear about it,� Ms Ritchie said. “The compiled results will form a vital part of our representations to local, state and federal governments on which road maintenance and upgrade projects need to be prioritised. “We can’t help get it fixed if we don’t know about the problem, so it’s really important for people to get involved and take part. “Your suggestion for change could end up saving lives or

even simply make the daily commute less stressful for everyone who travels on that particular road.�

Ms Ritchie said this year the survey had an added Google Maps function which made it easier to identify the road name and pinpoint exactly where the issue was. “Last time this investigation was run, we identified over 500 inadequate or substandard roads around Queensland,� she said.

The survey only takes a few minutes to complete and is open until the end of February at racq.com/badroads for people to have their say.

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council is keen to encourage more people to make the Southern Downs region their home, launching a ‘new residents’ welcome kit at the Allora Show on the weekend.

Mayor Peter Blundell said the idea for the “Welcome to the Southern Downs� initiative arose from feedback from new arrivals and businesses in our beautiful region. “The “Welcome to the Southern Downs� initiative includes a package, which will be provided to people making the Southern Downs their home, and comprises two distinct parts,� he said. “It has an information booklet, showcasing important facts and stories, the “what, where and when� of our Southern Downs region, including local activities, information on schools, medical and other ser-

Every day in Australia, eight babies are born with childhood heart disease and every week, four will die.

It is the single biggest cause of death of children under the age of one and is a lifelong disease with no known cure.

On 14 February, HeartKids is turning Valentine’s Day into Sweetheart Day and giving all Australians the opportunity to divert money traditionally spent on Valentine’s Day presents into a tangible donation that will help kids in need.

They are inviting “sweethearts“ of all ages to show their love by purchasing a

card or gift from www.sweetheartday.org.au.

The purchase will result in a direct donation to help the national charity provide support, research, advocacy and awareness into childhood heart disease.

According to Jacobson, it is an important cause.

“Whether you are a parent or not, to learn that so many children are born with congenital heart disease so soon after birth is heart-wrenching,” he said.

“Most children will require open heart surgery, sometimes within days of being born, and once they’ve had a repair on their heart, they are likely to require ongoing surgeries throughout their life.”

Childhood heart disease is not a single condition; it includes a wide range of heart defects, which a child is born with or develops in childhood as a result of other illnesses.

In some cases, it will require major heart surgery, while for others it will remain undiagnosed until adolescence or adulthood.

“With eight babies born with a heart defect in Australia every day, Sweetheart

Day is a genuine opportunity to raise funds for childhood heart disease, including funding for life-saving research and desperately needed family support during surgeries and treatments. The purchase of a Sweetheart Day gift really can help mend a broken heart,” HeartKids Australia CEO Jayne Blake said.

Families of babies born with heart defects endure enormous emotional and financial stress, and the news is often received without warning. Having surgery is not a cure. Children with congenital heart disease will face unique challenges for the rest of their lives and for many, this will include ongoing medical treatment and repeated heart surgeries.

“Unfortunately, this is a disease for life, once a heart kid, always a heart kid,” Jacobson said. “We pray for the good stories and support HeartKids in helping those facing the tough times.”

IT’S that time of year again - time for That Dam Ride around the Granite Belt and Stanthorpe area or at least to start preparing for it when it finally takes to the road on 28 February.

Described as a “cycle route with personality” this is the third year of the event according to organiser Dan Cuthbert.

So why do it?

“To encourage exercise, promote our district, raise funds for charities via the Lions club and get like-minded people together,” he said.

“Cycling is a growing sport, and we have a great place to ride due to low traffic levels, no lights, much safer, great scenery, challenging couses.”

All funds go to Lions which distribute them throughout district to worthwhile causes.

So how did it start?

“I am a keen cyclist and wanted to be able to offer people a weekend away seeing how great the place is and also make it good for the Lions club who help me out,” Dan said.

And the event is growing well, according to Dan. “We’ve had 66 each year for the first two (the Tour De France only had 60 in its first year). This year we are aiming for 100.”

“Why do it? The terrain, the distance, the hills and the unpredictable weather.

“If you like cycling and a challenge, why wouldn’t you do it?”

What’s On Display’s broad canvas THE eighth Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art is on its way to Warwick.

APT8 Kids on Tour will visit over 50 regional venues from January to April 2016 including the Warwick Art Gallery on the Southern Downs from 9 - 21 February 2016.

As an integral part of the Asia Pacific Triennial series, the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) has hosted a dynamic program of interactive and hands-on activities for children since 1999, designed to connect young visitors with the art practice of some of the region’s leading contemporary artists.

QAGOMA director Chris Saines CNZM said the gallery had worked closely with artists from six countries including India, Vietnam and New Zealand to develop activities that would travel throughout Queensland as part of APT8 Kids on Tour.

“APT8 Kids on Tour will enrich children’s knowledge of the culturally diverse Asia Pacific region as they explore how artists reflect their culture, beliefs and ideas through art,” Mr Saines said.

“With the generous support of the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation, we are again able to bring these activities to regional venues so children from across the state can take part in APT8.”

APT8 Kids on Tour will feature making and drawing activities including Indian artist Venkat Raman Singh Shyam’s The Woman and the Parrot 2015 and Rosanna Raymond’s Play with Your Birds 2015, as well as multimedia activities such as Vietnamese artist UuDam Tran Nguyen’s Draw two Connect with License 2 Draw.

“We are excited to present a special version of UuDam Tran Nguyen’s License 2 Draw interactive where visitors create a large-scale drawing by manoeuvring a virtual car across a digital canvas, creating a collaborative artwork,” Mr Saines said.

IT is almost one of those rites of passage events when you live in a country region and the call is out again for entrants for the Warwick Show Girl Quest.

Organisers are looking for entrants aged between 15 and 28, single and with a passion for Warwick and surrounds.

It’s a chance to have fun, meet new people, gain confidence, practice public speaking and maybe learn a little more about the region they live in.

It’s also a chance to win a trip to New Zealand among other things.

And with the Olympics on in Brazil later this year this year’s theme is “Rio ... Tropicana”.

Dirty Grandpa (MA) Starring: Robert De Niro, Zac Efron.

THERE’S a lot to like about Dirty Grandpa.

First of all, there’s De Niro in the lead role - always watchable, except when he’s a Focker.

Add Zac Efron, a clean-cut young lad who the young people tell me has been in a lot of things.

In the same old story, these two are paired on a road trip in

which grandpa seeks to open his grandson’s eyes to the wrong path his life has taken.

De Niro gets all the lines: Efron is the panty-waist to the old man’s potty-mouth.

It’s a film with a much more likeable edge than the very similar - but plain old mean - Bad Grandpa of a couple of years back.

While most of the gross-out laughs are pretty predictable, it’s still a mildly diverting ride with more giggles than most

films around at the moment.

Most people could watch De Niro read the phonebook, and there is something interesting about Efron, although it’s hard to define.

Special mention to Aubrey Plaza, who steals the show as a sexually rapacious young college co-ed.

If she can avoid being typecast, then this is a young actress with some big things ahead of her. A daring effort.

Changes improve farm cash flow THE Coalition Government has introduced legislation aimed at delivering on a key Ag White Paper initiative to strengthen the Farm Management Deposit (FMD) scheme, enabling farmers to better manage during periods of uncertainty.

New England MP and Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources Barnaby Joyce said the Treasurer Scott Morrison introduced the fairer FMD arrangement for farm businesses to help farmers use income generated in good years to prepare for the inevitable bad ones.

“The changes to come into effect on 1 July will double the deposit limit for FMDs from $400,000 to $800,000, allow financial institutions to offer FMDs as farm business loan offset accounts and re-establish early access provisions in times of drought,” he said.

“These amendments, originally announced as part of the Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper, will allow farmers greater flexibility in managing

and accessing their own funds when they’re needed, as well as improving cash flows for farmers.

“These are sensible, practical changes that will make a real difference to how farmers prepare for and manage through times of uncertainty, like drought, and access saved funds to ease the pressure.

“Managing risk and uncertainty are part and parcel of working the land in this country and our farmers are some of the best in the world at that.

“But no matter how shrewd you are, consecutive seasons of drought, floods, fires and other unforeseen circumstances put pressure on even the most viable farm businesses.

“This scheme helps farmers increase their self-reliance and gives additional tools to manage during tough times.

“As of 31 December 2015, Australia’s farmers had deposited $3.96 billion in FMDs and we want to make sure this scheme remains useful and fit-

for-purpose now and into the future.”

Mr Joyce said the Ag White Paper is already making a tangible difference for farmers in their approach to drought and risk management.

“Through the Ag White Paper, we are investing a total of $2.97 billion to support farmers and rural communities to strengthen drought preparedness and risk management,” he said.

“We have provided certainty for in-drought concessional loans for the next decade, investment for better seasonal forecasting, more favourable depreciation arrangements for water and fodder worth around $86 million and support for drought-affected communities in the form of shovel-ready projects and funding to manage pest animals and weeds.”

Happy and healthy farm little tackers

By TANIA PHILLIPS COUNTRY kids connected to nature are happy kids according to a group of local childcare centres which believes growing vegetables and looking after chickens is the key to helping kids learn.

Rachel Noble of Little Tackers Early Childhood Centres says that current research indicates that a real connection with the outdoors is essential for our children’s health and wellbeing, making them healthier, happier and smarter.

“Little Tackers fosters a love of the outdoors and a connection with nature through utilising their outdoor spaces to grow vegetables, fruit trees and

shrubs and having natural play spaces that encourage exploration and discovery,” she said.

“Children are involved in the planting and care of the gardens. Even the baby and toddler age group have worm farms that they feed their morning tea and lunch scraps.

"The children get to observe to and watch how the worms produce castings and liquid that they then use to water their plants.

“Being able to watch plants grow from seed to harvesting food that they then get to eat is pretty special.

"Although only two minutes from the centre of Warwick, the children at Little Tackers are lucky that their centre has the

space to implement these programs.”

Little Tackers at Millmerran have a chook house and feed chooks and collect eggs daily.

All scrap paper is shredded and used for bedding for the chooks.

Little Tackers at Warwick is following suit and will have their own chook house soon.

“Children, no matter where they live, need the opportunity to make the connection to how their food is grown, and the care and attention that is needed to the land and the animals that produce it,” Rachel said.

“The early years is the best time to lay the foundations for children to grow into environmentally responsible adults.”

THE group of emerging Origin players who thought they were too cool for school and rules are now faced with the harsh reality that they will not be considered for Origin selection in 2016 after the QRL issued bans against all players involved including incumbent Australian player Ben Hunt.

The antics of these players has earned them the wrath of former and current Origin players who see the actions of the baby Maroons as disrespectful of the Maroon jersey, the players that have worn it in the past and all that it stands for. In fact their behaviour was almost childish - railing against rules that had been clearly put in place.

For most Queenslanders players fortunate enough to be playing in the NRL, a Maroon jersey is as sought after as the Kangaroos jersey. Some of this group may have blotted their chances for the opportunity of a lifetime.

Broncos coach Wayne Bennett summed it up pretty well when he said, “We don’t want them”.

Me, I say well done to Kevin Walters and the QRL who have backed him in his tough stance.

Sometimes being too cool for school is not really cool at all.

The 95-year-old was the most passionate supporter of the club and one of the most recognised faces not only in the Tigers club but in the Tenterfield district.

Barely a game passed that he was not at Rugby League Park cheering on his beloved Tigers and in more recent years the Tenterfield Ladies League Tag team - the Tigerettes.

Those who ventured to Rugby League Park inevitably got the chance to chat with Aub on his travels around the ground as he caught up on all the latest Tigers news or delivered it. He was the Tigers Ambassador.

Whether it was a win, loss or draw - it made no difference to this gentleman of the game - there was never a bad outcome in Aub’s eyes as long as you did your best. Players said his presence on the sidelines always made you dig deeper when you thought you had nothing left. His gentle words of encouragement were always a great comfort when you walked from the field.

Aub Gillespie will be long remembered for his kind gentle nature, his passion for his home town and his beloved Tenterfield Tigers as well as the mighty Sydney Roosters. He was a true gentlemen of the game and a true Tigers Legend.

The game will be poorer for this loss but the Tigers are certainly richer, thanks to his long association and involvement.

QTIS TO STAY THE announcement that Racing Queensland will retain several key components of the Queensland Thoroughbred Incentive Scheme (QTIS) has been met with relief and approval by those involved in country racing not only on the Southern Downs but also throughout the industry in Queensland.

It is a win for the voices of racing who lobbied the government following the release of the Tracking towards Sustainability Plan. Local stud owner Basil Nolan President of the Qld Thoroughbred Breeders Association declared the decision a major win for the breeding and racing industry as everyone benefits from QTIS. The future is certainly looking a little brighter for country clubs than it was several months ago.

This Saturday the club has programmed a single stableford as players prepare for the world famous Wallangarra Open on Sunday 21 February. The cost is $25 per person and the price includes lunch.

Tee off for the Open will be from 9am - 9.30am. It promises to be another great day, so mark it in your golfing diary.

Members are also reminded that the AGM will be held on Saturday 27 February following the normal round of Saturday golf.

DIFFICULT CONDITIONS GATEBALLERS had to contend with some blustery conditions when they played on Friday. The

unpredictable wind gusts played havoc with some shots - at least it was the wind that bore the brunt of the blame as several well-credentialed players saw balls going out. Andrea Denkewitz, Joy Newman, Grace Howard and Bill won two games before the White team of Margaret Dickenson, Pat Schnoor, Val Richardson and Les Williams turned things around and winning the next two games.

It is pleasing to see all players are improving their game, and with three more players having electronic watches, there is sure to be even more enthusiasm for the game. If you are interested in finding out more about gateball, you are welcome to “come and try” on Friday mornings.

Eight players took to the greens for the association croquet games in Stanthorpe and played two groups of doubles. Margaret Dickenson and Val Richardson outplayed Joy Newman and Andrea Denkewitz.

In an entertaining game, the final score was 26-22. Pat Schnoor and Heather Widderick paired up to play against Grace Howard and Effy Russell - ironically the final score was the same as in the previous game with Schnoor and Widderick claiming the win. Numbers are still a little fragile with

some members of the regular association croquet crew yet to get back into the swing of things since the end of the holiday season. Players are hoping to see regular Carol Verwey off the sick list and back in action shortly.

The golf croquet players were out in numbers for an early morning game of triples. No scores available this week but a reminder that anyone interested in the game is welcome to join the group on Wednesday mornings with play commencing at 8.30am.

DONALD ON TARGET THERE was a strong turnout at the Inglewood Sporting Shooters events last Sunday. Experience showed as the wily Tom Donald took out wins in both the Down the Line Clay event and the Action Pistol Shoot at the Inglewood range.

In the Clays, Donald outshot second placegetter Stephanie Dudgeon while Scott Johns finished in third spot. He proved to be equally as strong in the Action Pistol event where he outscored Trevor Lewis and Paige Donald.

The program for this Sunday includes Single Action and Rimfire Rifle.

CHARITY GOLF DAY THE Warwick Golf Club will host the annual Andy Wilson Memorial Cancer Council Qld Golf day on Sunday. Another big field is expected to tee off in support of this great charity fund-raiser.

A dozen players from the Cudgen Leagues Club are expected to join local players and other visitors in the 4BBB Stableford event. Nominations for teams of four or individuals can be made at the Pro Shop at the Warwick Club where there is a time sheet for the event.

DEVELOPMENT CAMP FOR UNDER 18S SIDE ONE of Stanthorpe’s favourite Rugby League sons, Michael Hancock will put the recently formed Border Bushrangers Under 18 squad through their paces this weekend during a preseason development camp at Sullivan Oval this weekend.

The former Stanthorpe Gremlin, who is now a game development officer with the Brisbane Broncos, will be joined by Jim Stevens and Damian Petrie. The Border Bushrangers Under 18 squad is made up from players from all BRL teams and will undergo some intensive training as they prepare for their inaugural season in the TRL. Players who are 17 years or 18 years in 2016 are eligible for the team and many are already in training with their respective senior sides.

It is hoped that this weekend’s development camp will prepare players for the demanding 22 round TRL competition. Players will have a unique opportunity to tap into the experience of one of the greats of the game and learn what is required to make the step up from successful Gremlin to Queensland and Australian representative player.

Staff and parents will join players and camp at the Gremlins clubhouse overnight Saturday.

Organisers are urging players to attend Sunday if they are unable to commit to both days. The camp is free.

SPORTERS WIN FOR SIMMERS AARON Simmers claimed an overdue win at Sporters last Sunday. Simmers outscored runnerup Mick Doorley and also had the Best Gross on the day. Run-downs went to Gary Kirby and Paul Armstrong. Jim McPherson took the Pin Shot on the 12th and No Won Kim the 17th. Ray Thorn picked up the Pro Pin. Meat tray winners were Dale Gillam and Gary Kirby. Sporters will be out and about on Sunday as normal with tee off between 8am and 8.30am.

A reminder that the annual Maureen Bates Memorial Day is not far away. There is also the possibility of an afternoon Sporters game in the coming weeks - more news on these matters as they come to hand.

RAIN HALTS PLAY... AGAIN FOR the second week, Stanthorpe Cricket Association fixtures were interrupted by rain last weekend. Both the games between Valleys and Wanderers and RSL and Souths were called off after only a few overs in the second innings due to rain and bad light.

In the opening innings of the game on the CF White Oval, Wanderers won the toss and put Valleys in on the rain-affected wicket.

Valleys had the scoreboard ticking over nicely and setting their opponents a target of 192. Stars of the Valleys innings were Anthony Marino and Andrew Middleton who both scored half centuries. The Wanderers batsmen had no choice but

to push the run rate along when they took to the crease and were scoring at a good clip when play was abandoned after only six overs with the score 1/42.

In the game on Sheahan Oval, Souths set the competition front runners RSL a moderate total of 118 after their 40 overs. RSL barely had the chance to settle into their batting line-up when play was abandoned with the score at 1/15.

As the season speeds towards the finals, these interruptions could have a major impact on the make-up of the top four sides.

AUSTRALIAN CALL UP WARWICK softball player Rachel Kraak has gained another Australian selection. The Warwick teenager was recently one of 30 players named, in the Australian Junior Women’s Spirit Softball Squad (Under-19).

It is another achievement for the former Warwick High school student who last year was selected in the Australian under 17 team.

The Under 19 squad will be cut to an 18-man side, and will be competing in the International Softball Federation Junior Women’s Softball World Championships in Florida, United States, in August 2017 WIN KEEPS FINALS HOPES ALIVE WARWICK Hotel Colts batsman Lachlan Gross has been in stunning form with the bat in recent weeks, scoring a clutch of half centuries. In last weekend’s game against Inglewood, Gross went a step further converting a half century into a wellearned ton. His 102 was instrumental in Colts victory.

Batting first, Colts set Inglewood a target of 202. In the second innings, some good performances from the Colts bowling attack had Inglewood dismissed for 132.

Michael Coleman 2/19 and Mitch Watson 2/20 were the pick of the Allora bowlers.

The win keeps Colts hopes for an A Grade finals appearance alive.

Only two rounds of regular fixtures remain the Warwick competition before the teams are split into A Grade ad Reserve grade.

HAT-TRICK SETS UP WIN WHEATVALE paceman Jack Breen pulled off a unique hat-trick in last weekend’s fixture game against Railway Hotel Rascals.

Breen, who has been in good form in recent weeks, took wickets with the second, third and fourth balls of the opening over of the game.

Breen bowled Rascals opener Brad Johnson with his second delivery. Tom Morris followed his teammate back to the sidelines after he was caught by Carter Billborough at cover the next ball. Liam Keating followed suit after Breen cleaned bowled him with his next delivery. It was the young paceman’s first hat-trick in senior cricket.

Chasing Wheatvale’s score of 208, Rascals failed to recover from the devastating opening over. Joe Morris offered some resistance against a determined Wheatvale bowling assault to top score with 75 but Rascals collapsed to be all out for 125.

It was hardly surprising that Breen finished with the best bowling figures (3/8 from four overs). He received great support from Ryan Collins (2/11 from five) and Carly Cooper who showed her versatility taking two wickets after a stint behind the wickets with the gloves netted her two catches.

It was a win full of merit for Wheatvale who were without the services of the four Cantwells and sends a clear message to their opponents that they are a club with a great deal of depth this season.

STILL BOXES TO TICK STEPHANIE Hancock has achieved a great deal during her illustrious rugby league career. Despite rising to the pinnacle of her game, there are still many things that motivate Hancock to continue. As captain of the Jillaroos, the 33-year-old this weekend will show up for the Australian All

Stars when they play the Indigenous All Stars in the curtain-raiser at Suncorp Stadium. There is a formidable winning record against NSW to keep intact. The Anzac Test against archrivals the Kiwi Ferns later in the year and of course what better way would there be to wrap up a career than with a win in next year’s World Cup. It will be her fourth appearance at the World Cup. In 2013, Hancock was a member of the winning side. To captain the Jillaroos to a win next year would probably tick the last box for this leader in women’s sport.

Countdown to racing series

By TANIA PHILLIPS THE Pirelli Southern Downs Road Race Series run by The Motorcycle Sportsmen of Queensland is back with round one kicking off at Morgan Park Raceway on 13 and 14 of February.

More than 100 competitors already entered means the success of the series looks set to continue.

No matter what kind of bike competitors want to race, there is a grid of like-minded competitors waiting to test themselves against them.

The event is a chance to make friends and enjoy lap after lap of fun.

Round one also plays it part deciding this year’s Queensland Champions in the Moto3/125GP and 250/300 Production classes.

Round three is the second and final leg of the Queensland Championship for these classes.

“Our incentive of allowing bona fide first time racers the

chance to take part in their first race meeting for no cost (subject to attending a track-day) was a great success last year, and we are pleased to continue it through 2016,” Motorcycle Sportsmen of Queensland vicepresident Simon Dickson said.

“It has been a privilege to bring new riders into our sport and watch them grow into competent racers. As a club, we believe it is important for the long-term future of the sport to have a low pressure pathway into the sport, and we hope that this year’s club racers enjoy being a part of our club.”

“Formula one is where the superbikes play, these are the most powerful machines, 1000cc missiles, if you like to see bikes laying down rubber out of corners these are the beasts!

“Formula two will see the 600cc supersport bikes, it is a class filled with massive talent, many of our club members have gone on to become National Champions or raced internationally.

“Formula three is a club-oriented class for mid-sized bikes, ranging from 250cc 2 strokes to 650cc twin cylinders with a solid smattering of 400cc bikes from the 90s.

“Formula four and Formula six are for machines prior to this century, up to 500cc and over 500c. If you like to see older machines put through their paces, these are the classes for you. ” He said it was not just the riders that got to be involved, the club had some of the country’s best race officials.

“If you have a passion for racing, but don’t want to ride, maybe becoming an official is just the thing for you,” Simon said. “As well as learning from some of the best, volunteers receive lunch, and accommodation can also be provided if you are officiating over multiple days and do not live locally,” he said.
