Heroism honoured

By KATH GANNAWAY PLANS for a Seville War Memorial are edging closer to reality with the injection of a $20,000 grant under the State Government ANZAC Community Grants Program.

The project which would see a contemporary cenotaph erected in Seville township was launched last year with a target of around $160,000.

The memorial, designed by Wayne Deklij, is a project of the Seville Township Group and comprises the cenotaph as stage one, and a garden of reflection as stage two.

Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe congratulated the committee behind the project last week saying it was a project that would not only honour Seville’s own Victoria Cross winner, George Ingram, but which aimed to help the community stay connected to the history of World War I and the role served by local veterans.

George Ingram was born in Baggshot near Bendigo and grew up in Seville.

After serving in Rabaul, George Ingram went on to serve in the 24th Battallion AIF on the Western Front where he was awarded both the Military Medal and the Victoria Cross.

In a book launched last year - ‘Great Courage and Initiative’, Mount Evelyn historian and author Anthony McAleer said he lived an heroic life.

Seville Township Group president Sue McMurdy said the memorial would provide a central place for people to gather on occasions such as Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. “The pool and the bus shelter are memorials, and we have memorial plaques on the gates at the school, but a central location to gather around on these special days is something we have never had,� she said.

The $20,000 takes the memorial fund to $37,000 and there are plans as part of the campaign to hold a number of fund-raisers to move the project forward.

The first is the Seville War Memorial Cup between Seville and Wandin football/netball clubs on 6 March at the Seville Recreation Reserve.

A concert staring Vietnam Veteran and 60s pop idol Normie Rowe is planned for April as well as a business lunch in June with a guest speaker, and host organisation Wandin/Seville (Bendigo) Community Ban promises the event will be a major drawcard.

Joy to young ’n’ old A NEW program that encourages friendships between older and younger generations has received a positive response at Mercy Health in Montrose. The Intergenerational Playgroups concept aims to keep aged care residents connected to their local community. Mercy Health Lifestyle and volunteer manager, Karren Gooding, said the response had been overwhelming. “We trialled the playgroups at other sites last year and they were a hit with everyone who took part,� she said. Tree blocks tourist road

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS MOUNT Dandenong Tourist Road was closed in both directions and Olinda township was without power last Wednesday after a tree fell on the road and a bus became stuck.

The tree fell across the road, about 12.35pm on Wednesday 3 February, blocking access between Monash Avenue and the Olinda-Monbulk Road, taking out high-voltage powerlines and causing minor damage to shops.

In an effort to avoid the fallen tree, a bus then became wedged at the intersection of Mount Dandenong Tourist Road and Everest Crescent, near the Cuckoo Restaurant.

Power Company AusNet cut power to the area so SES crews could access the tree and assist VicRoads with the removal process.

Two cars were trapped under the fallen tree, with no way of knowing the extent of any damage until the tree was removed and the powerlines made safe.

Jackson Evans of Emerald SES said the area had to be quarantined due the fallen powerlines.

“It will be some time before the powerlines are safe and VicRoads arrive in the scene to clear the road,” he said.

Another car was also clipped by the falling tree but no serious damage was caused to the vehicle and the driver was unharmed.

Big year starts at home base After 40 years, he’s still a cut above

By PETER DOUGLAS THERE’S no place like home when preparing to take on the world, according to elite cyclist Simon Clarke.

The Selby-raised Clarke spent many hours over summer training at the Monbulk Aquatic Centre before – on Wednesday 3 February – heading off to Europe for the coming racing season.

He says the gym facilities are essentially world-class and believes training in his home environment will hold him in good stead.

And what a year it promises to be for the Tour de France stage winner.

With a new team and an Olympics dream on the calendar, Clarke has plenty to be excited about.

“One of my goals this year is the Olympics in Rio, but it won’t be an automatic selection,” he said.

“The standard of cycling in Australia is improving and there is plenty of competition for spots, but I’ll give it my best.”

Clarke previously competed at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, which he lists as one of his greatest achievements.

Another highlight was being awarded the coveted polka dot jersey at the Vuelta a Espana in 2012, becoming the first Australian to win the climbing classification.

This season, Clarke has moved from the Orica GreenEDGE team to Cannondale-Garmin, saying he needed a fresh start.

Clarke is set to be a leader within the young team, which will cycle in the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France.

Clarke attended Selby Primary School and Billanook High School, acknowledging the Dandenongs had con-

tributed greatly to his success.

“Many cyclists travel hours to get to the Dandenongs, but I just head out my front door,” he said.

Clarke said he would like to thank the team at Monbulk Aquatic Centre for helping accommodate his intense training regime over the past months.

THERE’S been the mullet, the flat-top, the bowl-cut and many more ‘trend-worthy’ hairstyles over the past four decades – and Andrew Rayment has seen them all.

The hairdresser on Tuesday 9 February, celebrates 40 years of working at the Mountain View Hairdressing salon in Belgrave.

The popular figure has become an integral member of the Belgrave community, with his service extending to the local traders’ association and Puffing Billy, where he has been a volunteer for 45 years.

Interestingly, Mr Rayment said initially he had no intention of pursuing hairdressing.

He said it was mere luck when he stepped into the salon at age 17.

“I came in to get a haircut and there was a vacancy,” he said.

“I wasn’t doing anything at the time ... but hairdressing was the furthest thing from my mind.

“I took the apprenticeship but I was only going to stay the four years.”

Mr Rayment started under the salon’s original owner, Ray, who

he said was also a great mentor.

But his affiliation with the salon continued long after his apprenticeship, eventually purchasing the business.

He said he enjoyed building long-lasting relationships with the many loyal customers.

Surprisingly, he said the requested hair-do’s hadn’t got any crazier.

“Back in the 1970s they just wanted to grow it long and not look after it,” he said.

“At least today they take pride in their hair and take care of it.”

But after 40 years is retirement on the cards?

Probably not yet, according to Andrew.

“I’m not ready to hang up the scissors just yet, but I could easily hand over the bookwork,” he said.

Andrew said he would like to thank his wife, Megan, and the community for their support.

To help celebrate the achievement, past and present clients, along with colleagues, are invited to drop by the salon on Saturday 13 February, between 1pm and 3pm.

Carwash goes down well

THE Annual Mount Evelyn CFA Australia Day carwash was another huge success this year with the event hosted by the Fast Fuel Petrol Station.

Kim Dent from the Mount Evelyn Fire Brigade said the day was really great for the station and the community.

“We had a great turnout from the public bringing cars through,” she said.

“We also had a sausage sizzle on the day at Fast Fuel.”

Money raised on the day will go towards the brigade being able to purchase a brand new thermal imaging camera.

“The camera will assist the brigade with possibly being able to seeing through smoke and assisting us to possibly see if items are still on fire,” Ms Dent said.

Mount Evelyn is a volunteer brigade and is grateful to Fast Fuel and all members of the community who came out to support the brigade on Australia Day.

Between 7am on Wednesday 3 February and 7.50am the next day, two registration plates were stolen from a vehicle on Canterbury Road in Montrose.

POLICE are looking for witnesses after a Belgrave house was ransacked in late January.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said that between 1pm and 6pm on Monday 25 January, unknown persons entered a house in Bellbird Street, Belgrave.

Det Sgt Barrow said it looked like the intruders came through the front door of the house, and stole nothing in the incident - but ransacked parts of the house.

“What we’re looking for is anyone who may have seen anybody in that street between those hours,” he said.

Anyone who has any information on the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Tool thieves hunted POLICE are on the hunt for power tool thieves, and asking owners to be wary of their belongings, following three power tool thefts late last month.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said between 4pm on Thursday 28 January and 3.50pm on Saturday 30 January, a shed was broken into in Kidgell Street, Lilydale.

Det Sgt Barrow said there were no signs of force, and a brush cutter, an angle grinder, two cordless drills and other power tools were stolen, with a total value of $1500.

All of the tools were Ryobi branded.

POWER tools were also stolen from a shed on Mathers Avenue in Launching Place, sometime between 4pm on Friday 29 January and 10.30am the next day.

Det Sgt Barrow said there were no signs of force in this burglary too, and that $2500 worth of power tools, including two lawn mowers, a pressure washer and two sanders, were stolen.

The third theft occurred between 10pm on Sunday 31 January, and 7am the next day, where someone forced the lock on a door to a car on Warwick Road, Montrose.

Det Sgt Barrow said a Makita circular saw and an Ozito reciprocating saw were stolen from the car, worth $220 in total.

He said that power tool thefts had become “the new norm” in the area.

“They’re easy to take away, they’re easy to transport, they’re also easy to on-sell,” Det Sgt Barrow said.

He said that owners, whether professionals or not, should take down tool models and serial numbers, and store the details somewhere safe.

“We tend to recover tools, and find it difficult to trace them back to where they came from,” he said.

Criminal damage charges laid A KILSYTH man will face court later in the year after being caught smashing windows in Mooroolbark at the end of January.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said in the early hours of Sunday 31 January, a man was believed to have smashed the windows of two properties in Mooroolbark.

Police arrested the man, a 32-year-old Kilsyth resident, who was interviewed and charged with several counts of criminal damage and weapons offences.

He was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 13 July.

Electronic speed signs for schools I WAS proud to make a number of announcements recently which will have a real positive impact on our community in the Monbulk electorate.

First of all, the Andrews Labor Government promised that it would provide much-needed electronic speed signs for local schools ahead of the start of the 2016 school year.

Sixteen new signs are now up and running at Mount Dandenong Primary, The Patch Primary and Selby Primary to alert drivers to reduced 40km/h speed zones during school hours.

These signs significantly increase driver awareness and help us protect young children as they make their way to and from school.

Powerline works ‘save customers’

By PETER DOUGLAS AUSNET Services believes its $40 million powerlines upgrade in the Dandenong Ranges is starting to show major benefits.

According to a statement, widespread power outages were avoided recently in the Kallista, Mount Evelyn, Kalorama and Mt Dandenong areas when strong winds struck the region.

Ausnet believes two trees have been blown over in locations that would have taken large numbers of customers off supply for prolonged periods.

Instead, the damage to the network

and supply disruption to customers was confined to the low-voltage lines serving fewer customers.

Project manager Aaron McArrich said these incidents showed the works were already achieving one of their critical goals.

“Within weeks of the works being completed, they have prevented considerable cost and inconvenience from prolonged power outages,” he said.

“And as the weather warms up, we believe the other major outcome of these works - improved bushfire safety - will also be underlined.”

Mr McArrich acknowledged the patience of residents in the area while works were taking place.

IN relation to the Mail’s inquiries to Yarra Ranges councillors in last week’s edition (2 February, 2016), which canvassed their opinions over the proposed multi-councillor wards, Franc Smith from the Mount Evelyn Environment Protection and Progress Association has prepared the following letter. It’s the Mail’s opinion the questions raised in the letter need clarification. Through this article, the Mail has endeavoured to provide further clarification around issues related to the Victorian Electoral Commission’s review. The Mail hopes this will foster informed debate within the community over this important issue. Mr Smith’s letter reads as follows.

5. Council’s statutory responsibility under the Local Government Act to ‘exhibit’ this report at their offices was never complied with. Why? If the community gets the government they deserve, did Mount Evelyn ‘deserve’ this?

YARRA Ranges Shire prepared the following details, which the Mail believes will help to clarify some, but not all, of the concerns raised: The Representation Review was conducted by the VEC, who placed public notices in a number of newspapers, including the Mount Evelyn Mail, to notify residents that the review was being undertaken and also to advise that their preliminary report had been released, with these being published in the Mount Evelyn Mail on 4 August and 6 October respectively.

Any queries regarding the adequacy or otherwise of publicity of the review in the Mount Evelyn area should be directed to the VEC. The assertion that the council could

appeal the recommendations made by the VEC is not correct. The Local Government Act does not make provision for appeals to be lodged in respect of the recommendations made by the VEC to the Minister, but instead places requirements on councils to provide any information or assistance to the Minister that the Minister may request for the purposes of section 219G of the Act. The council, with the input of all councillors, actively participated in the review and put forward submissions at each stage of the process, as well as appearing in person at a public hearing on 5 November, 2015. In addition, individual councillors also put forward submissions and appeared in person at the public hearing.

Details of the process followed by the VEC and those who participated in this, including copies of their individual written submissions, are available in the final report and on the VEC website at: www.vec.vic.gov. au/reviews/Yarrarangesrr.html The requirements placed on the council by section 219F of the Local Government Act relate to ensuring that the final report is available for inspection for the period of at least three months after the report is received, not that it be exhibited or displayed.

A limited number of copies of the final report have been available for inspection since its release and this is also available online via the VEC website. The copies of the final report provided to the council are held in the governance office.

WHEN the Sisters of the Good Samaritan established Mater Christi College in 1963, affordability for local families was paramount.

However, they never thought they would see the day when the school fees actually fell.

That’s what happened when the college board sent a letter to parents last week to let them know that fees had been reduced by at least $1100 per student.

“It’s a nice surprise, isn’t it!” Mater Christi parent Michelle Goodie said.

“It was lovely and most happily accepted.”

The Goodie family have prioritised education for all five of their children.

“We’re on the home stretch,” said Michelle, with her youngest daughters Cassandra (Year 11) and Samantha (Year 9).

“It means that we will be able to let the girls make the most of some of the other opportunities that come along because they go to Mater Christi.”

Over the last decade, the number of students in the school’s area swelled and Mater Christi grew quickly.

“This growth placed enormous pressure on our facilities and ultimately led to fee increases,” college board chairman Terry Stephens said.

Demographic projections made it clear to the board that the decade long ‘bubble’ of local students was past.

“We believe that our projected student numbers will return to our long-term average of about 800 girls,” Mr Stephens said.

“This means the need for building new infrastructure will no longer create such a significant pressure on our finances.

“The best thing we could do is pass the Facilities Development Levy back to our families.”

Teacher-student ratios, refurbishment programs and curriculum offerings at the college will remain the same under the simplified fee structure.

Learning to thrive with a good routine THE thought of ‘back to school’ is the subject of many barbecue and poolside conversations.

What is the best way to assist young people to be ready for the ‘big day’?

Many young children are very positive and excited to return to school; some parents will be pleased to see the ‘kids’ back at school and most teenagers will screw up their faces and say ‘yuck’ (or worse) at the thought of returning to school.

But deep down, they enjoy being immersed in the social aspect of school, if not the thought of classrooms and school work.

In brief, this is what I tell parents who ask me at those poolside or beach conversations when they find I’m a school principal and teacher of many decades ... get children and teenagers back into a ‘routine’.

Start to get teenagers to get up earlier and work towards getting up at the normal time for school before the ‘big day’.

Sleep patterns take time to adjust and this is best done as gently as possible.

Proper sleep, up to 10 hours per night, is what young people need.

Organisation and a positive routine are good for all of us.

Discuss where homework will be completed and prepare the space if necessary.

Homework is best done in a quiet but public part of the home, not in a bedroom.

Discuss and make clear your ‘expectations’ regarding school.

You should have high and realistic expectations of what your child can achieve.

In discussion, set practical, concrete and attainable goals.

The goals should be ‘Goldilocks’ type goals: not too hard (unattainable), not too easy (no challenge) but just right (an attainable challenge).

Child(ren)/teenagers thrive on knowing what is expected of them and that you have high but realistic expectations of them.

Stay in touch with the key people for your children at school.

Good ‘communication’ is vital.

In primary years of school, the key person is the class teacher.

In the secondary school years, the key people could vary a little from school to school but most schools have a ‘tutor’, a PCT (pastoral care teacher) or ‘homeroom’ teacher, and then possibly a year co-ordinator, head of house or even a head of sub-school as well as the individual subject teachers.

For specific subject-related matters, it is best to communicate directly with the subject classroom teacher.

For more general matters, the tutor or home room teacher is usually the best person with whom to build a relationship and with whom to communicate initially.

Teachers like to hear good news about the students they work with and like to get to know parents.

Stay gently in touch, even if it is good news!

THOUSANDS of runners are preparing to take on their favourite steam-powered rival, Puffing Billy.

Entries for the Puffing Billy Great Train Race will open on Tuesday 9 February.

Now in its 35th year, the event will see runners compete against the icon as it steams through the Dandenong Ranges.

Competitor numbers are expected to hit 3500, who will take part in the 13.5km race from Belgrave to Emerald Lake Park on Sunday 1 May. The Great Train Race is one of the oldest and most popular events on the Australian running calendar, with runners pitting their fitness against the popular tourist icon.

However, it’s not just the steam train with which runners need to contend.

The varying terrain of sealed and dirt roads will provide an extra challenge as runners traverse the hills of the Dandenong Ranges.

Puffing Billy Railway special events manager Matt Collopy said the first 10km of the race would be an uphill battle.

“The Great Train Race is a very challenging run and not for the faint-hearted,” Mr Collopy said.

“While relatively short in distance, the three hill climbs in the first 10kms certainly test the runners and we encourage all participants to train accordingly.”

This year, North Balwyn speedster Steve Kelly is preparing to set a new record and be the first person in history to win the race four times.

Kelly won the event last year in a record time of 42.27s.

He previously won the race in 2012 and 2013.

Event organisers are expecting a sell-out within seven to 10 days of entries opening, so runners should sign up quickly.

All proceeds and any additional donations go towards the Puffing Billy Menzies Creek Museum Redevelopment project.

AFTER racking up more miles than at any time during their 30-plus career history, favourite ska-pop exponents Loonee Tunes is set to hit Belgrave’s Sooki Lounge for a celebratory show on Friday 19 February.

The show is set to be a cracker, with a mix of originals and covers on the bill, running the gamut from ska to some classic modern tunes in two one-hour sets.

Frontman Adam Timms said the Sooki crowd was among their favourites.

“We’ve played Sooki a couple of times a year for the past few years and we’re always

amazed by the support we get from the audience,” he said.

“Most of them are just there to have a good time and we give them that.”

Timms said interstate audiences have been responding well to their recent shows, with the band in tip-top shape.

“We’re on top of our game right now, with the strongest line-up ever,” he said.

“Our horn section is tight and powerful, while the rest of the band are energetic and focused on the show.”

The band formed in 1982 after being drawn to bands such as The Specials, The Selecter and Madness.

Their list of achievements is

quite impressive, supporting a number of high-profile acts on the ska scene.

Their confidence and sound has grown considerably over the years and they have grown a loyal fan base, particularly after their Sooki shows.

Timms said like a fine wine, the band was getting better with age and encouraged old fans and new to check out their progress.

“It’s an exciting time,” he said.

“Capitalising on years of playing experience, finding new inspiration, expanding into the national marked and maybe beyond ... a good time to be a Loonee Tune.”

BACK by popular demand, The Dressmaker is a beaut Aussie film from Jocelyn Moorhouse, a talented female director.

World-famous dressmaker Tilly Dunnage (Kate Winslet) returns to her outback hometown of Dungatar to take care of her unstable mother Molly (Judy Davis), and must endure widespread distrust as childhood allegations of murder come back to haunt her.

Moorhouse helms a poignant yet funny period dramedy with engaging themes and a harmonious balance of wildly different tones.

Winslet is confident and alluring as Tilly, but Davis nearly steals the show as Molly, a cranky yet spirited lady who helps her daughter through the darker times.

The Dressmaker has one of the tightest narratives in

recent Australian cinema. Not a single plot-point is wasted, and all weave a tapestry of the depravity and flippant, judgmental people beneath Dungatar’s surface, and of Tilly as a strong woman moulded by her traumatic past (for better and worse).

By DENNIS FULLER MEMBERS at Emerald Golf Club rolled down to the first tee to try to win the coveted February VGL monthly medal and the bragging rights for at least a shortened month.

As they oozed into the tuck shop, a succession of players looked expectantly at the results so far and assessed their chances of a win.

Some slunk into the corners as sobbing wrecks.

Dave Aitken (27) proved to be the king for the day when he sidled in with a nett score of 63 to take out the medal and a win in B Grade.

Captain Dean Shannon (16) proved to be too good for the rest of the A grade rabble with a nett 66.

Many played very well, headed by John Keys on 66 while a swish of golfers - including Peter Clowes, Leigh Morison, Philip Crossley and Steve Town - all managing 68.

The consistent John Fisher was nearest the pin on the 4th, Aitken the 7th, Town the 12th and the pro pin, while Jeffrey Marsh trumped the field on the 13th.

After a Titanic struggle, the ladies’ medal went to Daisy Mackey with Gracie White and Kendra Hill one stroke back in equal second place.

Last Wednesday’s Ordinarily Flabby Golf (OFG) was a stableford event with the organiser managing to turn on the rain, just for effect.

Ken Sumsion (31) loved the weather to come in with 45 points.

Althlete Erika inspires team

By JAMIE STRUDLEY YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS YARRA Ranges Open Men’s and Open Women’s teams competed in the Athletics Victoria Shield Final on Saturday at Lakeside Stadium.

The final sees the top two teams from the four metropolitan regions, plus three country combined teams, competing to determine the top club in Victoria.

Both Yarra Ranges Athletics teams were competing in Division 2, with the Open Men’s team finishing an outstanding second place and the Open Women’s team a fantastic fifth place.

Erika Bedyn was one of many Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes to put in superhuman performances, competing in all but one track event on the day.

The points earned by Erika in the 3000m walk, 800m, 3000m and 4 x 400m relay were valuable points for the club.

But it was the determination to do what she could that inspired her fellow club athletes to the performances achieved on the day.

Lucas Taylor and Michaela Duncan also competed in five or more events, generating significant points for the club.

With several club athletes unavailable, the future is promising for Victoria’s newest athletics club.

Congratulations go to the Men’s team for a well-earned second place.

The team comprised Lucas Taylor, Malcolm Duncan, Dale Bullen, Jamie Strudley, Michael Clarke, Bryan Ackerly, Craig Hewitson, Scott Sutton, Dave Laven and Dave Seeds.

The Women’s team of Michaela Duncan, Ebonnie Twining, Laura Digregorio, Erika Bedyn, Steph Bollaart, Sophie Todorov, and Kathi Hewitson were superb, combining as a team to finish fifth.

Motoring Signs of safety up

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS MOUNT Dandenong Primary School is the latest school in the Dandenongs to have new electronic 40km/h signs installed.

Signs were switched on at Mount Dandenong Primary School, The Patch Primary School and Selby Primary School as of the start of the school term.

The Mount Dandenong Tourist Road will also have a reduced speed limit around the school, dropping the current 60km/h limit to 40km/h after working toward this for the last seven years.

The back entrance to The Patch Primary School on The Patch Road, which is a 60km/h zone, will also be lowered to 40km/h during school times.

Selby Primary School will also have their static speed limit signs upgraded to four new electronic signs on Belgrave-Gembrook Road.

Education Minister James Merlino paid a visit to Mount Dandenong Primary school on Wednesday 3 February to see the new signs.

“We’ve made the roads around schools in Monbulk safer, so that our kids come home safe and sound at the end of every school day,” he said.

Mount Dandenong Primary School principal Michael Leonard said the signs would make a big difference to the safety of the school community.

“The crossing is located on a sweeping bend, and it is often wet and slippery on the roads up here. We have had some near misses in the past,” he said.

“Slowing vehicles down to 40km/h will make a huge difference. Knowing that our students, parents, toddlers and crossing supervisors are going to be safer is a big relief.”
