A School of Educational Enterprise St Monica’s College, Epping is a vibrant coeducational community of students, staff and parents, which embodies the truths and values of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in its structures, processes and styles of relating. The College was founded in 1964 by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan to serve the needs of Catholic girls in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. Male students were first accepted in 1978, when a second junior campus was opened. A rural campus, Ostia, was established in 1999. Ostia is in the village of Strath Creek.

St Monica’s College is acknowledged in the wider community as a leader in the area of literacy and numeracy and is committed to supporting all students in the development of these essential skills. The College employs specialist literacy and numeracy staff to coordinate a whole school approach in which all teachers share responsibility for developing students’ reading, writing, speaking, listening and critical thinking skills.

The needs of all students are recognised and catered for, and the College employs specialist staff with expertise in the education of highly able students (HORIZONS Accelerated Learning Program), students with learning difficulties and well established integration programs.

The College’s LOTE Learning Centre incorporates the Theatre of All Nations. The College teaches Italian, French, Greek, Spanish and Japanese. The College runs

a bilingual immersion program (CLIL) in Japanese and in Italian.

Demonstrating its commitment to senior studies, the College provides an extensive range of VCE offerings with small class sizes to ensure high results. Meanwhile, VET and VCAL programs are offered on site and these are proving popular for many SMC families. Students have access to the VCAL Hub, a purpose built facility.

The College also has a strong commitment to the pastoral care of students, and incorporates a pastoral program in the curriculum for all Years 7 to 12 students.

Four College Educational Psychologists are available to students and parents.

The co-curricular programs are vast, and St Monica’s College is recognised as a leading sporting school locally, nationally and now internationally. The Debating and Public Speaking Society, extensive music and performing arts programs, and ever-popular activities such as chess and art clubs flourish at the College.

Recent building projects include a new Trade Skills Centre on the senior campus and an award-winning library on the junior campus. In April, 2015 a multimillion dollar expansion program Project Forward was launched, ensuring exceptional facilities will continue to be developed at the College.

HOPPERS CROSSING SECONDARY College ‘Prosperity Through Diversity’ Hoppers Crossing Secondary College is a single campus, co-educational College with an enrolment of approximately 1,400 students. Situated in an urban growth corridor, approximately 20 minutes west of Melbourne, the College welcomes students from Years 7-12. Great emphasis is placed on developing innovative and challenging educational programs, which is achieved by maintaining a close working relationship with all stakeholders of the College community.

Our students are TOMORROW’S LEADERS The College offers a structured and active student leadership program including a formal Student Representative Council (SRC) and established High Resolves Program. Opportunities also exist for involvement in programs such as Youth Parliament, Constitutional Convention and the School for Student Leadership. College Captains are involved in key decision-making at the College as members of the College Council and represent the student body in these decisions. Our students are SUCCESSFUL In 2014, 70 per cent of Year 12 students received their top tertiary preference and 91 per cent went into further

We take pride in offering students guided support throughout their chosen pathway of VCE, VCAL or VET studies and prepare students for University, TAFE or employment options. University Enhancement Studies are offered at the College and provide opportunities for students to incorporate tertiary studies within their VCE program.

Our students are DIGITAL LEARNERS Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is prioritised across the curriculum with the inclusion of interactive whiteboards or digital media projectors in every classroom, as well as two Apple Mac laboratories and a 1:1 Netbook Program. This is aimed to skill students to take their place as digital citizens.

Our students are PERFORMERS A strong Performing Arts Program underpins a vast extracurricular offering. Every year the College participates in the Wakakirri Secondary Schools Challenge, a national dance competition whereby students choreograph routines, design costumes and assemble stage sets. The College was awarded Victorian Story of the Year in 2014 and was also awarded the National Reconciliation Award for the performance titled ‘Break the Divide’: a story promoting social and cultural diversity and acceptance.

Bacchus Marsh Grammar Commitment to the core development of numeracy and literacy skills.

At Bacchus Marsh Grammar we believe that one of the important features of a school is the range of choice that can be offered to senior students.

At Years 9 and 10 students are able to pursue a range of options to complement a commitment to the core development of numeracy and literacy skills. Some of the exciting new options available for students at Year 9 next year include: The Rise of the Machines - 3D Printing, Bioinformatics – Cloning our Future, Introduction to Permaculture and PhotoQuest.

The school treats Year 10 to 12 as a block for the purposes of curriculum. This means that students have considerable control and choice over the curriculum they choose at Year 10 and also the ability to undertake accelerated VCE studies with ease.

At Years 11 and 12 the school offers an extremely wide range of VCE, VET and VCAL options. It has made the conscious decision to specialise in the provision of the VCE and provide as many options within that framework as possible. This sees it offer over 40 different subjects at both Year 11 and 12. This variety gives students a real chance to tailor subject choices towards post school careers and pathways. The school believes that the VCE is a robust certificate ideal for entry to Australian Universities but equally well recognised overseas for those who may have aspirations to study outside of Australia.

The size of the school’s VCE cohort also means that multiple classes of many subjects are available, removing many of the issues of timetabling clashes that can reduce choice in smaller schools and cohorts.

In 2015 Bacchus Marsh Grammar will have approximately 310 in the final two years of school. This size of senior community is almost ideal for providing the best mix of choice for students but also maintaining appropriate pastoral care and support for all students.

Our more academic students perform at the very highest levels, but the School is exceptionally proud of the way in which our ‘middle’ students achieve outcomes greater than that which they originally expected.

Our students overwhelmingly move into tertiary education on the completion of their secondary schooling, with over 90% being offered their first choice through VTAC. They are to be found in almost all Universities and TAFE Colleges in Victoria, and increasingly interstate and overseas, as well as in numerous private and more specialised tertiary providers.

Every year upon graduation, the lasting impressions left by the departing students is that they have had a great and varied time at school, have been taught well and supported well through their good and bad times, and now they move on with hope and confidence, as well as being in possession of the skills, knowledge and habits they will need as they move into a future of their own making.

FCC also specialises in nurturing and challenging all students through the different phases of their secondary schooling from Year 7 to 12.

Its Year 7 students step into the recently renovated Year 7 Learning Centre which has been purposely designed to provide the youngest students with a warm and inviting home base as well as a bright and stimulating learning environment.

The pastoral care system at Year 7 and beyond ensures that the school knows its students well and attends carefully to their personal and academic needs. Close communication with parents is integral to the pastoral care approach.

Rosehill Secondary College is a single campus co-ed 7 to 12 college built on the border of Essendon West and Niddrie. It is located on a large, attractive site elevated above Steele Creek, with views over the Maribyrnong River Valley. Rosehill has a continuing agenda of refurbishment of facilities, with a focus on the creation of vibrant indoor and outdoor learning spaces. The school is a single campus with students from Years 7 to 12. The current enrolment is 1180 students; females comprise 49% of the population providing an almost equal gender balance. 74% of Year 7 students come from primary schools within our network.

The Curriculum structure is based on a Junior School (7-9) and Senior School (10-12). All students in Years 7-9 study the core subjects of Mathematics, Science and English and can choose three elective subjects each semester across the Key Learning Areas. Moreover, at Years 7 and 8 there are two periods each week of Literacy Enhancement and Numeracy Enhancement for six months at each year level. Year 10 students undertake core subjects in English and Mathematics (differentiated groupings) and can select four subjects each semester across the other KLAs. The Year 10 level is designed as an introductory year to VCE and allows for students to select a VCE subject at Year 10 to enhance their learning.

A Selective Talent Enrichment Program (STEP) is offered from Years 7 to 10, and senior students may participate in The University of Melbourne Mathematics Extension Program.

There is a strong Physical Education/Sporting Program, with considerable success achieved in School Sport Victoria competition levels. The Performing and Visual Arts are important at Rosehill. Exercise: Essential food for the brain There is a shocking truth about Australian children that is unexpected for such a sport crazy country: our children are some of the least active in the world: 84% of school aged children fail to get one hour of physical activity a day; 75% of children aged two to four spend more than one hour in front of a television or computer daily and about 15 per cent have a screen in their bedroom.

As well as being essential to physical and emotional health, exercise has a significant role to play in the healthy development of your child’s brain and this affects your child’s ability to learn.

How well the brain develops is very dependent on the kinds of experiences and opportunities a child has from the moment they are born. While good nutrition and nurturing relationships are essential, movement also plays an important role. Dr Daniel Wolpert, a neuroscientist and engineer who studies how the brain controls the body, argues that the brain’s most important job is learn, refine and control movement, because everything we do is movementbased, even thinking. When movement opportunities are reduced, the brain’s opportunity to learn and function to its potential capacity is considerably hampered.

How do you encourage children to “get active”?

Children look to adults for guidance on many areas of life – including exercise. Research has shown that parents who make exercise a regular part of your day are more likely to have young children who are also physically active. The trick is to make exercise fun and make it look like you are having fun as well! The sooner you start, the better!

Babies Babies need to move, because even early exploratory movements soon after birth affects how the brain wires itself.

• Keep babies unwrapped and out of restrictive containers (like the car seat, pram, bouncer, etc.) for as much time as possible.

• Keep hands and feet uncovered as much as possible to encourage movement.

• Tummy time when awake is very important. Tummy time enables those inbuilt, initial exploratory movement patterns to help the baby feel their body moving against the surface of the mat or your own body. This is the first step towards early independent movement.

• Avoid any screen time at all. Babies and children less than two years of age learn far more from moving and interacting with the world around them.

Toddlers and pre-schoolers Toddlers need lots of opportunities to gain good balance so that later motor skills have a solid foundation on which to function. It’s hard to hop or skip or even sit still in a chair if your balance is poor!

• Go for walks, encourage your toddler to balance along edges, planks, stepping stones and the like, and to run up and down grassy slopes. Good balance is essential for automatic control of the body.

• Put away that computer device and turn off the TV! Avoid screen time as much as possible. Limit it to a maximum of one hour a day. No time at all is better, but challenging

to implement! If you do allow your toddler to watch a screen, choose an interactive show, such as Playschool – so children get up and dance and sing along.

Primary School Children Active, healthy kids Australia report that only 19% of Australians aged 5-17 years and 15% of Australians aged 12-17 years, meet the recommended activity guidelines of accumulating at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. So how to encourage your primary schoolers to get active?

• As for younger age groups, active parents encourage active children, so look for an activity you are happy to do with your children – start with a simple game of catch, or cricket in the back yard. Once you all feel more confident head out for a picnic to a local park with scooters or bicycles. Picnic near the playground equipment so children can still see you and you them while they play.

• This age group will spend hours in a swimming pool playing. Make sure your children are swim safe – so lessons are essential first and they need to be supervised.

• Monitor screen time. Restrict TV to the few favourite shows each day. Turn the TV off once they are finished.

Try to avoid having the TV on all the time.

Teenagers The most active teenagers are those who grow up playing a sport and continue to do so during their teenage years. If your child is a reluctant exerciser and needs to be “dragged kicking and screaming” from a screen it’s definitely a challenge to get them active! Here are a few suggestions: • Start slowly. If you have a dog, make it the responsibility of the teenager in the house to walk the dog daily. Even if they just amble along for 10 minutes, it’s exercise they would not have otherwise had! Gradually encourage a longer walk.

• If watching TV try to build in some exercise when the commercials are on… make a game of it … who can do the most leg lifts in a row? How many push-ups can you do in the ad break?

• Boys love to have muscles. Encourage weight training – start with just their own body as the weight – push-ups, the plank, crunches etc all build muscle bulk.

Principal, Mr Wayne Haworth, has been joined by the new Assistant Principal, Ms Preeti Maharaj, to lead change in the way education is presented to students, to create authentic student empowerment. Together, Wayne and Preeti share a vision of a student led college.

“At Mount Alexander College, we empower students with their learning,” Wayne says. “Students have been trained to participate on Teacher Selection Panels and recently assisted in the selection of our new Assistant Principal.

From 2016, our curriculum options will be wider and more varied, creating enhanced learning opportunities.

Traditional year levels will be removed allowing students to undertake subjects beyond their usual year level, but at their learning level. We have removed the glass ceiling that exists with a traditional curriculum structure.

Students deserved to be challenged in not only the curriculum but also in other ways. We want to build confidence and leadership capacity in young people. By putting students at the centre of their learning, we are preparing them for the challenges of the 21st Century.”

This semester Mount Alexander College has six students trialling the independent learning that some students will undertake next year. They are learning through the Massive Online Open College, or as it is known, the MOOCs program.

The subjects being studied by the six students include:

Hardware security; Ebola – Symptoms, History and Origins; Super Earth and Life; Introduction to Thermodynamics: Transferring Energy from Here to There; The Einstein Revolution; Fight or Die: The Science behind FX’s The Strain; Celebrating Food and Wellness Around the Globe; and Introduction to Forensic Science.

“Every child is important,” Preeti says. “We want to work together with public schools rather than compete against them for scarce resources because historically that is what has been used to divide us. We are about system level changes. Schools are about students, and that is the core value that we have to remember. We will share resources and work together with any school that wants to, whether primary or secondary, because great public education is about everyone’s future.”

Preeti joined the leadership team at the college at the end of July this year after leaving her Leading Teacher position at Thornbury High School.

Mr Pete Hutton, the innovative Templestowe College principal, is mentoring Wayne. Peter has appeared on the TedXTalks talking about his innovative approach to learning.

The two colleges are working closely together to create a school where students drive the teaching and learning by actively nominating subjects as well as the content that is taught. Thomas Carr College celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2016. From humble beginnings in 1997 with 72 Year 7 students, the College now has over 1200 students. iD9 Program. A brand new curriculum and range of activities for our Year 9 students has been developed and commenced in 2014. This program aims to foster personal growth and community living skills, leadership qualities, an appreciation of sustainability and of physical fitness. Each term will have a learning focus drawn from the Australian Curriculum priorities and include a week’s City Experience and an extended three week Country Experience at our newly refurbished Good Samaritan Campus located at Coragulac, an idyllic country setting 11 Km from Colac.

Stage 2 also included a beautiful architecturally designed Chapel which has become the central focus of the Catholic Identity of the College and a reminder of the important place of faith in the education of students.

Stage 3 will begin in 2016 with a renovation and extension of the current gymnasium together with a ‘state of the art’ Performing Arts Centre incorporating a 500 seat auditorium, purpose built music and drama rooms and a recording studio featuring the latest technology As a Catholic secondary College we are providing our students with facilities now and for the future. We meet the educational needs of our families. We recognise change as a positive and provide our student body with the confidence and skills to become future leaders.

SUNSHINE college Innovation and hard work brings Sunshine College Maths Team Victorian recognition.

The Sunshine College maths teachers have been recognised by the Department of Education & Training at its annual Victorian Education Excellence Awards ceremony held at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne on Friday October 30th 2015.

The Deputy Premier and Minster for Education the Hon. James Merlino presented representatives of the Sunshine College Maths Team with the Award for Outstanding School Advancement in recognition of the tremendous amount of work they have done in developing and delivering the maths program that runs exclusively at Sunshine College.

The programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s results and innovative practices has led to numerous visits to the school from teachers across Australia and internationally.

The professional work of the teachers has been responsible for improving the mathematical skill of students to the extent to which the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s NAPLAN results are evidence of the commitment of teachers and the success of the program.

The program is a multi-faceted approach to teaching mathematics. It supports all students to achieve. It accelerates the learning processes for all students from those that have difficulty understanding mathematical concepts to those that are high achievers and enjoy the challenge of being pushed to complete complex mathematical problems.

The belief by teachers in the importance of building the capacity of all students and not just a select few is leading to more and more students going onto tertiary studies at places like Melbourne University.

All category winners on the night were then eligible to win the very prestigious 2015 Lindsay Thompson Award for Excellence in Education, which Sunshine College won as well.

Winning this award is a huge honour for the school and is the first time that a team of teachers has won this award.

Both awards recognise the enormous amount of work that the maths teachers at Sunshine College have all undertaken over the last 6 years.

Sunshine College students achieve fantastic NAPLAN results in 2015 NAPLAN results are a single measure of student achievement and at Sunshine College we know we have very talented students who are great singers, athletes, dancers, artists and in general kind and thoughtful young people. NAPLAN does not measure these areas of our student’s individuality and personality.

Given that we do understand the importance of developing well rounded and mature young adults we do want to take the opportunity to share with you and our community this year’s NAPLAN results, which are outstanding.

Our results show that on average our year 9 students at Sunshine College have performed at a significantly higher rate than at other schools.

Year 9 students after having started in Year 7 at Sunshine College in 2013 have this year achieved: 33% greater improvement in Numeracy than the average Year 9 student in Victoria.

20% greater improvement in Writing than the average Year 9 student in Victoria.

22% greater improvement in Reading than the average Year 9 student in Victoria.

15% greater improvement in Spelling than the average Year 9 student in Victoria.

34% greater improvement in Punctuation & Grammar than the average Year 9 student in Victoria.

These are fantastic results worth celebrating.

Another important measure of school success is the ‘relative growth’ of individual students from Year 7 to Year 9. Our students have made enormous growth.

Students across Australia are judged to have made LOW, MEDIUM or HIGH ‘relative growth’ from year 7 in 2013 to year 9 in 2015. All schools across Australia want their students to achieve MEDIUM or HIGH relative growth.

Our results are as follows: 83% of our year 9 students achieved MEDIUM or HIGH ‘relative growth’ in Numeracy.

77% of our year 9 students achieved MEDIUM or HIGH ‘relative growth’ in Writing.

79% of our year 9 students achieved MEDIUM or HIGH ‘relative growth’ in Reading.

74% of our year 9 students achieved MEDIUM or HIGH ‘relative growth’ in Spelling.

grossek’s view Domestic violence scores highly on student achievement.

I was reading a piece in the Sunday Age on domestic violence by Annabel Crabb, host of ABC’s television program Kitchen Cabinet recently. It reminded me of how entrapped in the consequences of domestic violence are our schools. In reflecting on her early days as a print journalist in Adelaide, Crabb noted that domestic violence was one of those issues from which journalists steered clear and on which very little was reported. It was a virtual taboo topic and the silence did nothing but inadvertently contribute to domestic violence continuing on its horrific way. Thankfully, times are changing, albeit too late for those past victims, the vast majority of who are women.

Annabel Crabb’s message is close to home in my profession, teaching. I wouldn’t think there’s a teacher around who hasn’t taught a child belonging to a family trashed by domestic violence and all too frequently masked by the reasons outlined in Annabel Crabb’s piece. Mandatory reporting is required of teachers, but only in cases where children are the direct victim of abuse, not the mother. Children become collateral damage; the consequences can be devastating and we see that in our schools all too often.

I recall two contrasting examples of domestic violence involving families of children that attended schools in which I worked more than thirty years ago. There were many more, suffice to say. Both tell a sorry tale, all the sorrier because they could be stories of today.

The first involved an eleven year old boy when I was still teaching. Let’s call him John. He came to my grade 6 the same year in which I was appointed to his school. I say his school, because from what I could gather, school was about the only place in his life that afforded him relief from the torture that was his home. I was told by my principal that John could only be placed in a grade with a male teacher because he had an almost pathological resentment of women. He had attempted to stab a female teacher the year before with a sharp pencil when she had blocked his exit as he attempted to escape from the classroom.

You see, John’s parents had separated, but not before John had seen his father brutally assault his mother with a large piece of wood. This left him a smouldering, withdrawn child, one who was very bright but could just as easily rip up his work and refuse to engage in classroom activities. NAPLAN wasn’t around then, and just as well, for it would have told us nothing about the challenges facing John, his mother and his school. He told me once that he hated his mother but wouldn’t elaborate. I shouldn’t have been surprised. Recent research provides a damning picture, one in which underlying attitudes too often still find reasons to excuse males for inflicting domestic violence on their female partners.

Some years later, in role as principal of a small inner suburban primary school, I took it upon myself to try to help a parent who one day dropped her terrified children off at school, her face black and blue. We sat and chatted over coffee in the community room and her tale of woe was gut wrenching. Her husband had recently been released from prison following a stint behind bars for breaking restraining orders for previous beatings he had given her. He promptly broke into her house the night before, raped her and warned her not to go to the police or next time she wouldn’t be so lucky! Her view was that the Court Orders against her husband weren’t worth the paper on which they were written. Nothing I said could sway her to even consider reporting her husband’s latest attack on her to the police. She said she’d chance the odds that he might go away. Of course he didn’t.

For too long our politicians have been obsessed with judging schools on how well their students score on national tests in literacy and numeracy. Important as they are, safe homes for children are more important and that means that the momentum now being created in dealing with domestic violence cannot be derailed.

To that end, our state government, in heralding its commitment to making Victoria the Education State is to be commended for its focus on “the whole child” in its new curriculum. Let’s never forget that the whole child means their physical, psychological, social and academic development. Schools can do a lot, but not enough. Let’s not look for quick non-fix solutions like more training for teachers. A whole of society approach is what is required to tackle domestic violence. Making mums safe in their homes is a great first step in developing the “whole child”.

The college is intensely proud of our Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) specialist classes and school wide program, which prepares students for VCE, tertiary education and the workforce. AVID focuses on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organisation and Reading.

Our partnerships with Beacon, Victoria University and the Australian Business and Community Network continue to expand, offering increasing opportunities for students including gaining scholarships, being mentored by professionals, touring a wide variety of businesses and learning about many careers first hand. Our partnership with Victoria University includes students being taught vocational subjects such as Building and Construction and Electrical courses by university teachers at our Trade Training Centre, as well as VCE students undertaking the Early University Program. The Early University program includes AVID students in Year 11 completing a university unit of work at the VU Footscray campus in Term 3 and Year 12 students beginning university degrees while in Year 12.

It is pleasing to see that on average 97 per cent of our students receive an offer at either university or TAFE. CRC north keilor Education in Faith . . . Education for Life These are the words that will ring out as students, their parents and visitors are welcomed to Catholic Regional College North Keilor.

Catholic Regional College is a Year 7 to 10 coeducational College underpinned by our core values of Faith, Resilience, Compassion and Respect. The College offers a diverse curriculum and extra-curricular activities, yet is small enough for students to be known individually by the staff. We have a strong student wellbeing focus and work in partnership with parents and students to provide a safe and connected community, based on well established preventative student wellbeing policies and strategies. There are many opportunities for students to demonstrate leadership skills. These include at Year 10 with College Captains, Social Justice Captains, Arts Captains, Sports Captains, Peer Support Leader positions as well as SRC members representing all other year levels.

The College offers innovative programs aimed at enhancing the educational opportunities and engagement of students based on a 21st Century curriculum and learning environment. The College has a laptop program in Years 7-9 and students in Year 10 use iPad minis. The students use eText books in classrooms with interactive white boards. We have a ‘boys to men’ (Nitor) program at Year 10 and the Audemaus Program at Year 9, both of which have a focus on applied learning and field trips. F1 in Schools is an example of the outstanding extra-curricular programs offered to our students. Our F1 Team has been selected to compete in the National Finals which will be held as part of the Grand Prix in March.

The College also runs camps at Year 7 and Year 9.

For the students that strive for excellence in the Arts, the College offers a broad range of core art subjects from Year 7-9, both in the Visual Arts and Performing Arts areas. These are supplemented by a range of exciting electives in Year 9 and Year 10. The students’ talents are celebrated in the ‘Unleashed!’ talent show and the annual Arts Exhibition.

Dyslexia diagnosis gives parents and child a sense of direction WHEN Mary’s* son was diagnosed with dyslexia in Grade 2, she knew there was a long process ahead of them.

But thanks to the wonderful staff at Caulfield Grammar School, her son is now thriving and his self-confidence has boomed.

Mary said the diagnosis several years ago gave her and her husband a sense of understanding as to why their son had been struggling to read and write in school.

“It gave us a sense of direction,” Mary said.

“Dyslexia covers a wide range of learning difficulties, and can affect different children in different ways. From the word go he struggled to recognise letters and write his name.”

Mary said her son was tested for a number of different issues, but it was when they saw a child psychologist that the diagnosis occurred. Since then, she and her husband, as well as the staff at Caulfield Grammar School have been working closely with him to improve academically and gain self-confidence.

“He was too young to understand anything about dyslexia when he was first diagnosed, but we have always been honest with him about it,” she said.

“It was only when he was in about Grade 4 that he started to realise he had learning difficulties. We told him he had dyslexia and had to work harder than most of his peers.”

School set up support programs to help him,” she said.

“He was offered the reading recovery program, which is usually only offered to older people, and he persisted with that until the end of Grade 4 or 5. Even then he had English support.”

Mary said that due to the diagnosis, and needing extra support, her son’s confidence suffered in primary school and took an even bigger hit before he made the transition to secondary school.

“He went into (secondary school) terrified because suddenly he was leaving a class of 50 kids to enter a class of 180 kids. He didn’t know where he would be in the pecking order or how he would cope. It was a big change, let alone when you also have to struggle with dyslexia,” she said.

“He started off on a bit of a back foot, failing his first maths test. But he had a fabulous teacher who put in place a whole range of programs to help him, and before long, he worked out he could do it. He has gone from being a student where he had to be supported, to now being able to get A’s on his own. It’s huge for his confidence.”

Mary said that while her son was thriving in school, he still had to put in a lot of hard work and dedication.

“It’s a long process,” she said.

“He can’t be too relaxed about his school work. He knows he has to put in a lot of hard yards.

Mary’s son is now in Grade 8 and is now thriving thanks to encouragement from his family and support programs at the school.

“It’s heartbreaking as a parent to see your child struggle but he’s doing so well now. He’s even started to read for his own enjoyment. It’s fabulous to see.”

And everyone loves a bargain. People wait for hours in line to get their hands on a great Boxing Day sale. They get into bidding wars for a second hand item on eBay or pinch their pennies by being buyer-savvy at thrift shops.

Mr Weir and his father pitched the idea to Paul Bassat of Square Peg, who also co-founded Seek.com. He loved the idea and approached Ms Mactier, who used to work for Seek.com. She came on board as CEO shortly after, and the website was launched in April last year.

But now parents wanting a great education for their children, without paying an arm and a leg, can get that too thanks to a new website launched last year.

Similar to the Wotif website, where last-minute hotel rooms can be purchased at a reduced rate, School Places is a two sided, online marketplace that matches a school’s last minute, unexpected vacancies with parents looking for an enrolment at a non-government school.

The website has gained national attention, attracting more than 30 schools in Victoria, and over 90 schools nation-wide. To date, it has delivered over $21 million in potential enrolment revenues.

School Places CEO Natalie Mactier said the website had been extremely popular as it provided benefits to both the parents and the school.

“By offering a short-term discount on the tuition fee, the parent is incentivised to fill the spot quickly and the school is able to maximise revenue by filling a seat within a classroom that would otherwise be vacant,” she said.

“Schools benefit because the additional revenue is invested back into the school community and can go towards additional resources and helping to moderate school fees in the future. It’s great for the entire school community.”

The website was the brainchild of Jeremy Wein, whose family have been involved in independent education for years. His father was on the board of a Jewish school in Melbourne and his mother was a teacher. Two years ago, a conversation between Mr Weir and his parents sparked the idea for the School Places website.

“His parents were speaking about their family and friends struggling to cope with rising school fees. (Jeremy) was thinking if a school’s seat goes empty, the school loses revenue for that vacancy. On the flip side, parents struggle to keep up with education fees,” Ms Mactier said.

“He put two and two together and came up with a way

“I wasn’t at all surprised by how popular the website was. I expected it to go well because it is a really unique idea,” she said.

“It’s not just about last minute discounts, it’s also about providing parents with a level of transparency that doesn’t normally exist. If you are looking for schools for your child, there’s not really a service to see what school has a vacancy. It’s very time consuming to call every school. Then you have to apply for schools and wait.

It’s very old fashioned. On School Places, parents can register their details and receive automated information (about vacancies and discounts). There are currently about 6000 parents on our database.”

While the benefits are two-fold, there are also a few drawbacks.

“It really is for last minute vacancies. If parents have multiple children, not all of them may get a spot at the school. It’s also more catered to parents who are willing to move their children to the school last minute,” she said.

“What we are finding is this website is perfect for parents who have a child in a public school, who has planned or intended to move them to a private school, but haven’t registered them early enough.”

The discounts range from 10 per cent to 50 per cent, and the discount duration ranges from one year to six years.

Ms Mactier said School Places was set to attract even more parents and schools in the future.

“We are constantly meeting with schools every week. We have a lot of schools in the pipeline, many who are just trying to work out what vacancies they have,” she said.

“I would suggest interested parents register their details on our website as soon as possible, and we can feed the vacancies to them as they become open.”

MORE ACTION NEEDED ON body image AND STRESS Mental health implications need to be considered

A RECENT Mission Australia youth survey involving 15,351 young Australians aged 15-19 contains some discouraging news for the federal government. They unfortunately reported that 43 per cent of teenage girls consider the issue of body image a major worry compared to only 19 per cent of young males.

The study’s authors claim that the Government’s attempts to address the issue have been unsuccessful.

Mission Australia’s National Manager of Research, Dr Bronwen Dalton, says “in terms of the very high concern around body image among young women, we continue to make the point that well-meaning efforts to combat the problem by governments and others have failed to make an impact and need to be reconsidered.”

Michael Carr-Gregg who is a nationally registered child and adolescent psychologist working in private practice in Melbourne says “At the very least, its time to seriously question the efficacy of the Voluntary Industry Code of Conduct on Body Image and Positive Body Image Awards to guide the media, fashion and advertising industries to adopt more body image friendly practices along with the Butterfly Foundation’s ‘Free to Be’ body image education services. Given that many girls in particular, seem to now believe that they are born into a giant beauty contest – it seems timely that a national summit on body image be held with major stakeholders and a clear re-evaluation of the existing strategy is called for”. He is passionate about adolescent mental health, technology and education.

The survey results also beg the question as to what has happened to the resilience of young people with 40 per cent of participants stating that coping with stress was their major personal concern (17 per cent extremely concerned + 23 per cent very concerned). Various other studies have found that self harm is present in between 11-12% of girls and perhaps this is a byproduct of this generation’s inability to cope with stress.

This is particularly disappointing, in light of the fact that schools have for some years, had access to a variety of evidence based frameworks in the form of the Mindmatters and Kidsmatters resource and professional development initiative, supporting Australian primary and secondary schools in promoting and protecting the mental health and social and emotional wellbeing of all the members of school communities. In addition, all Australian schools have had access to strength-based curiculum material such as beyondblue’s excellent Senseability package.

These programs focus on problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution, anger management and the ability to name and recognise one’s own thoughts and feelings. The problem is that none of these programs are compulsory in any year level and even if they are present, will only ever be as good as the teachers who deliver it and their training in the use of the resources. Perhaps it is time to tie funding to such programs so that they are at last seen as important as Maths and English.

A final concern arising from this report is that school or study problems (36.5 per cent) continue to grow. It is hard to tell whether this is a product of peer pressure, hysterical parents or schools taking an enormous eggbeater to the supposed importance of Year 12.

Back in 2003 the NSW Commissioner for Children and Young People called for an “urgent investigation of how to support young people during this stressful period and how to work with parents and the community to provide realistic guidance to students”. The study found that pressure to perform in the HSC contributes to one in 11 adolescent suicides in NSW – yet the problem persists.

Dr Karen McGraw’s 2006 study showed that nearly one in five year 12 students have considered suicide or cutting or burning themselves because of exam and homework pressures. Perhaps it is time schools and the community at large turn the VCE volume down and instead let young people know that they are not their ATAR and that there are many different ways to get where they need to go.

While much of the media will focus on the fact that the study revealed that young Australians overwhelmingly believe the biggest issue facing the nation, the economy and the environment – traditionally a major issue for young people – has dropped dramatically as a matter of national importance, with concern falling by more than half since last year’s survey.

“Few people realise that 75 per cent of all mental health problems in human beings begin prior to the age of 25. Current data suggests that 1 in 7 primary school students and 1 in 4 secondary school students have a diagnosable mental illness but 70 per cent don’t seek help. The truth is that there will never be enough funding for adolescent mental health services and there needs to be a reconsideration not only of existing service delivery models but also a concentrated investment in prevention.

His training and approach incorporates cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness skills and interventions drawn from positive psychology research. He is a founding member of the National Centre Against Bullying and Chairs their Cybersafety Committee. He sits on the Board of Smiling Mind as well as being a Community Ambassador for Big Brothers Big Sisters and Postvention Australia and Playgroup Victoria.
