VOLUNTEER fire-fighters not only help save communities, they save the State Government more than $1 billion dollars a year.

So why aren’t they being offered the same presumptive legislation cancer compensation and protection as career fire-fighters?

Yesterday (Tuesday), Shadow Minister for Emergency Services Brad Battin, Victorian Opposition Leader Matthew Guy and Member for Benambra Bill Tilley visited Wodonga along with Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) to sign a pledge to support CFA volunteers in a vote for non-discriminatory presumptive legislation for all Victorian fire-fighters.

Shadow Minister for Emergency Services Mr Battin said it was vital that the State Government offered volunteers fire-fighters the same protection.

“It is looking to bring in the Tasmanian model, which is discriminatory against volunteers and favours the career fire-fighters,” Mr Battin said.

“We must have equal rights between the two as they are fighting the same fires at the same time and they contribute largely to protecting the community.

“Daniel Andrews has to explain to these volunteers as to why he is going to let them down against career firefighters.”

While Queensland and South Australia have already passed the presumptive legislation for fairer and simpler cancer compensation for volunteer firefighters, NSW and Victoria are still fighting for the same right.

With about 300 call-outs in Wodonga, Mr Battin said those volunteers worked in collaboration with the Wodonga career fire-fighters and were assets to the community.

“Wodonga is a perfect example as to why volunteers should be recognised as equal to career fire-fighters.

“All the volunteers I’ve met throughout the North East, both men and women, are dedicated to protecting their community and we saw this before Christmas when the call to arms came and we saw huge support and resilience from volunteers.”

Mr Tilley said the CFA volunteers should be equally recognised for their work and service towards their community.

VFBV State Councillor for District

24 Graham Cocks said the presumptive legislation would be a starting point to cut back criteria to prove when, where and how a fire-fighter came down with cancer.

“It could’ve happened 20 years ago and you can’t recall where or how it started, especially if you’ve been in the service and some incidents for over 20 years,” Mr Cocks said.

“We don’t want any more excuses, exclusions and delays from the govern-

ment as we’ve been pushing for it nonstop for many years now.”

Mr Battin and Mr Guy plan to go to every regional district in Victoria, to ensure that they sign the pledge in each district along with the district’s local member.

“We want to make sure that we’ve signed it so we can be held to account that we will support legislation that is equal to both the careers and volunteer fire-fighters,” he said.

By MONIQUE KUZEFF PETSTOCK will be holding a pet adoption day in it’s Wodonga and Albury stores from 10am to 2pm on Saturday 6 February, and welcomes all those pet lovers and potential owners who are interested in the care and rehousing of rescued dogs.

With the contribution and support from local rescue groups including Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue (AWAR) and Wodonga Dog Rescue, there will be plenty of dogs and cats to meet and choose from on the day.

Owner of the Lavington and Albury Petstock stores Shane Evans said the initiative, led by Petstock’s charity leg Petstock Assist, in conjunction with notfor-profit animal rescue organisation PetRescue, aims to raise awareness of pet adoption and encourage people to consider giving a rescue pet a forever home.

“We want to raise awareness that there are animals that can be adopted and you don’t have to get a pup, you can get a dog that’s past the silly stage,” Mr Evans said.

“They’re all checked by the pet rescue groups to make sure they’re suitable to go to a home.

“If these pets don’t get rehoused, they don’t end up in a nice place at all.”

Mr Evans said pet adoption day is a good way to rehouse animals who have been given up for various reasons.

“Reasons why they have been abandoned include things like lifestyle changes, health and financial reasons, time restrictions and also the training,” he said.

“We want people to know that pet adoption is available and is an option.”

According to PetRescue co-founder Vickie Davy, more than 100,000 pets were killed in pounds throughout Australia last year.

Last year on pet adoption day, Albury Petstock rehoused eight dogs, while Wodonga Petstock managed to rehouse nine.

Mr Evans said it was a very successful day, and he hoped that number could be exceeded this year.

Mr McDonald said the winner was awarded a cash prize and each nominee would receive a voucher entitling them to one term of tuition at the North East and Border Academy of Sport.

“Through the tuition, a professional will examine them and determine what they need in order to go further with their sports and what will enhance their opportunities,” he said.

“It’s fantastic to have such an award to give to young sportspeople out there where they can put it on their resume so their work and efforts are recognised.

“It highlights the achievements of the young athletes in the Albury and Wodonga area and the prizes help to assist them.”

Mr McDonald said anyone was welcome to attend the awards night, which will be held on Friday 26 February at the Commercial Club, Albury.

Short-term supermarket plan

By MONIQUE KUZEFF BEECHWORTH’S Memorial Hall may well become a potential interim supermarket for the town while a new Ritchies establishment is being constructed, ideally within the course of a year.

About two weeks ago, a recklessly lit fire took down the town’s only supermarket, causing a significant inconvenience to Ritchies employees and the community.

It was discussed last week by Ritchies and the Indigo Shire Council

that the town couldn’t go on without a supermarket, as it provided jobs and stimulated economic activity.

Indigo Shire Mayor James Trenery said the supermarket functioned as an important economic stimulator in town and created employment for 50 supermarket staff.

“It’s a community asset, it provides jobs, it stimulates economic activity, and it is an outlet for locally-grown producers,” Mr Trenery said.

Further reasons why the Memorial Hall was discussed as a possible temporary supermarket was the position

and the size of the property, Ritchies CEO Fred Harrison said.

“It is definitely a preferred option because of its practicality, but there are still other options we are looking at,” Mr Harrison said.

“The majority of employees will be able to keep their jobs, while some casuals have already taken up other jobs with other businesses around the area.

“Most part-timers will maintain their roles and these are the main reasons why we must get a pop-up supermarket in town - we need to continue

our local economic activity and keep our jobs.”

Mr Harrison said the ultimate decision as to whether the Memorial Hall would be utilised would be made by council.

Furthermore, technical issues that would come as a part of using the hall would need to be more thoroughly considered.

“It’s not going to be easy but a lot of it will be plug-in fridges and we might require a small generator.

“We are in a tragic circumstance

here and it’s not our choice to have to trade anywhere but at our first site so we are trying hard to come up with a suitable alternative."

Mr Harrison said that both Ritchies and the council would have to do some comprising on behalf of the community.

“Unfortunately, you can’t make 100 per cent of people happy 100 per cent of the time,” he said.

“It’s only a short-term situation and it’s important we serve those who have jobs, mortgages and families here by providing a good service in the community and supporting our staff.”

This Guy is on right track

By MONIQUE KUZEFF VICTORIAN Opposition Leader Matthew Guy and Coalition MPs arrived at Wodonga station on the V/Line train yesterday afternoon to discuss the local issues that have plagued the service.

The North Eastern rail line has been subject to much inquisition over an extensive period of time, with ongoing issues that are halting its progress.

As a regular rail traveller across Victoria, Mr Guy said it was important for the State Government to experience the North East line by taking the train more often.

“I’ve done this ride a couple of times now with Bill Tilley (Member for Benambra) and I believe it’s years ago when the train still went into Wodonga,” Mr Guy said.

“It’s good to get the train around regional Victoria and it’s a shame the minister doesn’t take it more often because he might learn first-hand that it’s not what it’s cracked up to be.”

Mr Guy disagreed with the Andrews Government’s intent to cut expenditure from country roads and bridges and to spend a large proportion of money exclusively on the Frankston line.

“You don’t govern for all Victorians by spending the proceeds of the biggest privatisation in the

state’s history on just one railway corridor. We need some of those proceeds to come to regional Victoria.”

Mr Guy said the Coalition Government wanted to focus on upgrading regional rail lines to ensure regional Victoria had a first-class rail service.

“There seems to be a lack of focus from the Labor Government on our country rail service, which needs a lot of upgrading.

“Clearly our rail service in regional Victoria is not up to scratch compared with a comparable regional service in New South Wales and Queensland for instance,” Mr Guy said.

“It’s not 100 per cent and we know that it needs to be improved, there needs to be some focus on V/Line transport away from just the Traralgon, Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong lines.

Mr Guy said there continued to be further reviews and consultations regarding the North East line, which the Minister for Public Transport had started up again, but regional Australians wanted to see action.

“There has been a view that the North Eastern line has been predominantly a Federal Government problem, but the state has a role to play.

“When we were in government, we fought very hard with the Federal Government to upgrade the railways south of the Border. It’s not

Mr Guy said the Liberal and National parties were focusing on plans which were going to form the crux of decentralisation policies.

“My guarantee is that we will see some clear policy - very clear policy,” he said.

“In the way of not just rolling stock but rail infrastructure in regional Victoria which needs to be upgraded for our state’s future and indeed Melbourne’s sustainability.

“The kind of service which is going to be necessary for population growth outside of Melbourne.”

Some relief in sight for new TAFE students

By MONIQUE KUZEFF IT’S appropriate to say The Good Guys Albury really are good guys, having donated 100 hay bales to farmers whose farmland and livestock had been affected by the recent and vicious Barnawartha fires.

What were initially used as barriers to corner off the car park area for a discontinued items sale will now be used to feed the farmer’s live stock after paddocks upon paddocks of farmland were wiped out by the December fires.

The Good Guys general manager Luke Sims said he had bought the hay

bales off Gumtree with the intention to put them to good use after they had served the purpose. “From the start I had thought, 'well, where the hell are we going to put them afterwards?’,� Mr Sims said. “They had to go somewhere and what’s a better option than to donate them to people who really need them. “I heard about the farmers being really disadvantaged by the fires and it seemed fit to donate to them.�

Although retail businesses in Albury sponsor and donate items to great causes, sporting clubs and community events, they very rarely have an opportunity to

do something like this, Mr Sims said. “We as a retailer have customers from all walks of life including farmers and we don’t often get this kind of opportunity to give back to them.�

Shaun and Darrell Jones, who have been distributing hay bales to fire-affected areas, said the farmers were very grateful for the hay bales. “A lot of them don’t have any grass at all and were very happy to take it,�

Shaun Jones said. “Small token stuff often goes by unnoticed but this is a fantastic donation by The Good Guys.�

WITH TAFE up and running for the year, more students will be able to enjoy more opportunities after the recent announcement from the Victorian Government that it would sponsor some student funding exemptions.

Previously, students who had already received funding for two TAFE qualifications or had already completed a qualification higher than that which they were seeking to enrol in were ineligible for further government funding.

This new change enables the Wodonga TAFE to accept more applicants who are wanting to access a TAFE education but who previously could not because of the restricting criteria.

Wodonga TAFE CEO Mark Dixon said the new funding exemption was great new for the community. “The financial implications of accessing quality education can often be the difference between someone choosing to enrol in a qualifica-

Mr Dixon said it was particularly exciting for those people wishing to explore new career opportunities. “Even if they are fully qualified in one area, they now have an opportunity to not only become qualified in another industry, but do so with the funding support of the government. “Our region is facing some significant employment challenges, and reskilling people in areas where there is positive growth in the region is a key element to solving the problem. “If people are struggling to find employment or just wanting to make a change, this opportunity will not only provide them with the tools to achieve this, but do so at a minimum cost.�

With art in their hearts

By MONIQUE KUZEFF WHEN the Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) was in its planning and design stage, there was a vision that a studio space would be built so people could not only see art but create art.

Well, beginning in February, MAMA will be launching a 10-week workshop program, making it the first opportunity to run a workshop program at MAMA.

MAMA Director Jacqui Hemsley said the program would be a chance for adults to interact and be creative with friends at the morning or evening classes.

“It’s a great way to get out and socialise with friends, have a coffee and do some art; or those who want to reconnect with their creativity to come in the evening, have a glass of wine and have some fun,” Ms Hemsley said.

The 10-week workshop program will be run by talented local artists and will include a number or workshops involving watercolour, oil painting, pastels and live drawing.

Ms Hemsley said workshop options included painting for beginners, life drawing, illustration, all media and 'after dark’ lessons for people who could not make it during the day.

“I’m going to be doing some of these classes after work as a stress release, just come here, put on my painting clothes, let the world go and do some art,” Ms Hemsley said.

“The artists are very experienced tutors so you’ll be able to understand the full technique and know your media. We will also be keeping the classes quite small, less than 10 people so you get really good one-on-one training through these tutors.”

Courses are reasonably priced at $190 and includes all art materials in the first three weeks.

“It doesn’t matter what kind of experience you’ve had, it’s a very inclusive and warm environment,” Ms Luke said.

“Life drawing is addictive and as soon as you get over that initial discomfort of looking at someone you don’t know without any clothes on, it’s actually enjoyable and quite challenging.’

Artist Tracie Macvean, who will be taking on painting for beginners class, said her classes would help people to open up their minds and their creative sides.

“Through the simple techniques that I can teach, I’ll be able to help people open up their minds to art and to how complex simple things can be,” she said.

“It will also encourage them to view the outside world differently and appreciate art.”

Ms Macvean said her workshops would mainly involve the use of acrylic paints and some water-based mediums and they would be based around colour theory.

Artist Frank Burgers has been painting for about 30 years and will be taking on the open media and “Art After Dark” classes.

Mr Burgers said he enjoyed guiding people with their art and encouraging them to explore their creativity.

“My workshops are far more about

“When people are able to shape ideas and make ideas into art, that’s when it becomes a long sustainable passion.”

This inaugural event will be interesting and educational, particularly as about one third of people will be diagnosed with a cancer before they are 85 years; better research funding

could lead to better treatment or even a cure.

This is the first time speakers of the calibre of Professor Bowtell have attended Albury Wodonga for a presentation.

This meeting precedes the official opening of the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre, which is planned to open later this year.

I STILL get butterflies in my stomach when I think of my first day at school. The anticipation of seeing friends, and a few people I’d rather not face, finding out who my teachers would be, all that homework, study and exams. Ok, perhaps they were knots in my stomach. But those nerves weren’t all bad, they were also about excitement and anticipation for the year ahead.

For over 3.6 million students across Australia heading to primary and secondary school over the next few weeks there will no doubt be plenty of butterflies.

While some students seemingly cruise through the whole thing, whether they’re starting school for the first time, moving to a new school, starting high school or heading back for a new class, some young people find it a very challenging time. And let’s face it, it can be tough for us as parents too.

For some children it’s particularly difficult as they face extra pressures like getting the best grades, or dealing with bullying, and others may be dealing with mental health issues like anxiety or depression.

If you are a young person with something going on, or a parent with concerns about your child, you don’t have to handle things alone.

Headspace, the national youth mental health foundation provides support for young people aged 12 to 25 who are struggling with their men-

tal well-being.

ON SATURDAY 6 February, the Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group (BOCAG) is hosting their first luncheon to raise funds for ovarian and other cancer research.

This is to be held at the Commercial Club at 12pm; everyone who is interested can obtain tickets from Wodonga Chambers at 6056 8302; the last day to book is Wednesday 3 February.

The Hon Sussan Ley MP, Minister for Health and Federal Member for Farrer will officially open the luncheon.

The main speaker is Professor David Bowtell, the Head of Ovarian Cancer Research at Garvan Institute Sydney and Head of Cancer Genetics at Peter McCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne.

Prof Bowtell will speak about recent breakthroughs in cancer detection and treatment.

This research will help to find a cure for ovarian and other cancers.

BOCAG has been a leading force for crucial funds for ovarian cancer research and has already raised over $150,000 for the Garvan Institute in Sydney, the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation in Melbourne and the local Albury Wodonga Cancer Trust.

Funds have also been reserved for the new cancer centre.

With a daughter who lives in town and another who resides in Cobram, Barb said the location and independence she had at Riverwood appealed to her from the beginning.

“I wanted to move closer to my daughters,” Barb said.

“It didn’t take me long to make up my mind that I wanted to move here, “I had looked at other retirement villages and decided I liked this one best.

With the convenience of medical assistance, a hairdresser, library and a shop within a manageable walking distance, Barb said she was taken by the accessibility of the different services.

“If I need a couple of little items, the shop is just around the corner,” she said.

With larger walkways and spaces to move around, Barb said the general layout of her two-bedroom apartment was a drawcard.

“I liked the north as-

pect of the house, the size of the rooms and the fact that there wasn’t too much garden.

“Everything is very convenient about the house and I’ve got a second room for my computer and for when my children visit.”

Barb said her garden in Hay was much too big for her and that was one of the reasons she sought to move.

“I couldn’t manage looking after it, and here I’ll still do the garden but the good thing is it’s much smaller.”

Seniors grant shows some vision VISION Australia Albury and Albury City Council have been fortunate to receive a portion of funding from the State Government as part of the NSW Senior Festival Grants Program to help with preparations for the week that celebrates the older generation.

A share of $950 went to notfor-profit organisation Vision Australia Albury, while Albury City Council obtained a share of $400.

Vision Australia Regional Manager for Riverina NSW and North East Victoria Helen Vey said the organisation was delighted to receive the money to help provide further services and activities for the festival week.

“Given that we are a notfor-profit organisation, we were thrilled to have been given some funds to provide the community with activity for events like this so we can improve our contri-

bution,” Ms Vey said.

Ms Vey said the funds would help out with the expo and forum that were expected to run during the week of the senior festival.

“We want to provide an expo around different tools, services and equipment that will help people who are blind or who have low vision.

“The forum will teach people about life skills and show different techniques that might help them overcome their vision concerns.”

Ms Vey said the fund would enable them to provide a better expo for older residents on the Border.

“It’s really important for older people to be aware that there is facilities available that could help them live more independently as their vision declines.

“We will be showcasing magnifiers, canes and different techniques.

“There is a lot of anxiety that comes with losing vision and hearing sense,” she said.

Ms Vey said the festival gave the organisation the opportunity for everyone, including the younger generations, to understand the needs of seniors.

“I think it’s important that the State Government is providing this funding as it gives organisations the chance to show what they provide to the older generation which we wouldn’t be able to do without the grant,” she said.

Other organisations within the region that will receive a share in more than $200,000 worth of funding across the state include: Howlong Country Golf Club, Holbrook Meals on Wheels Service, Holbrook Library Complex, Urana Shire Council and Greater Hume Shire.

International Wrestling Australia (IWA) is dishing out more fun, more action and more excitement than has ever been seen in the over 100-year-old Australian pro-wrestling circuit.

Above and beyond the standard live sporting event, this adds elements of theatre and comedy. IWA’s live shows are action-packed and exceedingly entertaining.

Road trip to laughs Dirty Grandpa (MA) Starring: Robert De Niro, Zac Efron THERE’S a lot to like about Dirty Grandpa.

First of all, there’s De Niro in the lead role - always watchable, except when he’s a Focker.

Add Zac Efron, a clean-cut young lad who the young people tell me has been in a lot of things.

In the same old story, these two are paired on a road trip in

which grandpa seeks to open his grandson’s eyes to the wrong path his life has taken.

De Niro gets all the lines: Efron is the panty-waist to the old man’s potty-mouth.

It’s a film with a much more likeable edge than the very similar - but plain old mean - Bad Grandpa of a couple of years back.

While most of the gross-out laughs are pretty predictable, it’s still a mildly diverting ride with more giggles than most

films around at the moment.

Most people could watch De Niro read the phonebook, and there is something interesting about Efron, although it’s hard to define.

Special mention to Aubrey Plaza, who steals the show as a sexually rapacious young college co-ed.

If she can avoid being typecast, then this is a young actress with some big things ahead of her. A daring effort.

From Vegas, back to Oz

By TANIA PHILLIPS AFTER five years and more than 1600 shows headlining on the Las Vegas strip, The Australian Bee Gees Show will return to Australia for the ‘The 20th Anniversary Tour', a brand-new show for 2016.

This show is a retrospective look at the amazing career of The Brothers Gibb and will be presented in two parts with costume changes defining the eras.

The show will feature all of the greatest hits throughout the decades, but will also tell the Bee Gees story in a multi-media show that captures the mood and memories of the time.

The Australian Bee Gees Show is currently performing at The Excalibur Hotel and Casino.

The group has racked up over 1600 performances on the Las Vegas Strip and has just been re-signed for another two years until February 2018.

Elmwood Cafe owner/operator Heather Murphy-Dale said the cafe was a big drawcard for the locals.

“We’ve had extremely positive feedback from not only travellers, but residents who regularly enjoy coming by for coffee and afternoon tea,” Ms Murphy-Dale said.

“Here we provide a relaxed atmosphere and gourmet food using my own produce and vegetables out of my garden.”

The French theme definite-

ly shines through the rustic and organic interior and the lovely petite courtyard creating a laid-back ambiance.

Ms Murphy-Dale said she wanted to slowly incorporate more variety into the menu that will offer restaurant-inspired meals.

“The menu is evolving with each season,” she said.

"We’ve really enjoyed being part of the Elmwood environment and getting to know the locals."

Ms Murphy-Dale said the future outlook for the cafe was bright.

“Every day we are working on it and trying to come up with things that will improve it.

“We are thinking about running a little gourmet market in the cafe and the courtyard possibly starting in spring, but we are hoping to get it going a bit earlier than that.”

With catering options for corporate functions and celebratory events, this little cafe offers choice to Border and Elmwood locals. It’s a great meeting place.

Local Sport Wodonga hit the heights WODONGA sit on top of the Cricket Albury Wodonga ladder despite falling just 11 runs short of out-right victory over New City at Les Cheesley Oval.

New City were all out for 127 in their first innings with Wodonga scoring 5-241 declared, with Robert Jackson top scoring with 97 and Jack Craig 53 to take first innings.

However, New City held on to be 6-125 at stumps and stave off outright defeat despite an impressive bowling performance by Byron Hales 4-34.

Chasing Lavington’s first innings total of 185, Tallangatta took the first innings points at Rowen Park, scoring 250 with Trent Ball making 71 and Nathan Thompson, 62, while William Heriot finished with 4-37.

At stumps Lavington were 2-38.

Belvoir have come close to picking up an outright over lastplaced Wodonga Raiders at Kelly Park.

After making 3-303 and dismissing their opponents for just 60, Belvoir looked set to take the full points. They batted again to make 2-227 declared, but a dogged batting performance by Raiders led by Steve Coonan (51) and Aaron Killen (33 not out) saw the Raiders hang on to be 5-141 at stumps, with Belvoir five wickets short of victory.

Meanwhile, a 71 by Trent Ball and 62 from Nathan Thompson helped Tallangatta to first innings points over Lavington at Rowen Park. Batting first, Lavington scored 185 and then Tallangatta replied with 250 – in reply Lavington were 2-38 at stumps.

NRL players, envoys make the long trek NRL Community Carnival visits will be in full flight throughout the months of February and early March, with players from the Melbourne Storm, together with NRL ambassadors, visiting Albury and Wodonga to meet locals and educate school students on the importance of well-being.

Every NRL club, together with NRL ambassadors, will set out on the road over the next two months, visiting schools and communities right across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

This is the 16th year of the NRL Community Carnival, with more than 250,000 students reached as part of carnival visits in 2015.

This year, clubs, players and ambassadors are estimated to travel more than 40,000kms, visit over 1000 schools and conduct up to 80 Junior League clinics.

George Rose and Alan Tongue will make the trip to Albury, Wodonga and Wagga Wagga on 4 - 5 February to help deliver well-being messages to local communities, with a particular focus on proper hydration and sleep and encouraging a strong sense of belonging.

NRL chief operating officer Suzanne Young said the NRL Community Carnival visits were an opportunity for Rugby League to reach out to thousands of supporters and club fans in regional and remote areas and give back ahead of 2016 Telstra Premiership season.

“Our fans are the lifeblood of our game, and our clubs and ambassadors do an amazing job in local communities right throughout the year, spending time with kids and educating them on the importance of eating well and staying healthy,” Ms Young said.

Players will be joined by NRL game development officers in deliv-

ering well-being programs to locals, which include interactive activities, together with educational resources.

Programs are curriculum linked and endorsed by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), responsible for the national curriculum, assessment and reporting of students from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Melbourne Storm player Slade Griffin said he was looking forward to the trip and relaying some of the healthy tips that he follows as part of training on a day-to-day basis.

“As a player and as a person, it is really important that I keep my mind and my body healthy so that I am performing at my best,” Mr Griffin said.

“I am looking forward at getting out on the road, meeting the locals and providing people with some really simple tips to keep happy, healthy and active.”

Players and ambassadors will be

armed with two education resources as part of local visits: NRL Wellbeing: delivered to primary school students, focusing on empowering students to value health and well-being in their own lives.

Dream Believe Achieve: delivered to high school students, focusing on the important link between having hope and aspirations for the future and maintaining a positive well-being.
