Hold-off on the burn-off

By JESSE GRAHAM EMERGENCY services are urging residents not to be complacent with cooler weather and to dispose of their green waste safely, after dealing with residents burning off during mild days, despite restrictions being in place.

Healesville Police Sergeant, Stewart Thomson, told the Mail that, during the last weekend of January, which saw rain and mild weather, some residents began burning off green waste.

“Because we’ve had a bit of rain, people are starting to light fires,” Sgt Thomson said.

He said police had spoken to two residents on Monday, 1 February, for burning off, with the CFA called out to another over the weekend.

Sgt Thomson said that, during the Fire Danger Period, which spans from November 2015 until 1 May this year, it is illegal to have an openair fire without a written permit from the CFA or a municipal fire prevention officer.

He said fines for ille-

gal burn-offs can run up to $17,000 or one year in jail.

Healesville CFA Captain, Graeme Bates, said firefighters were expecting a dry March and that weather would be expected to heat up in the coming weeks.

Burn-offs can remain smouldering for weeks and re-ignite in hot and windy weather, as was the case with a large fire in Yellingbo last year.

“People have got to remember, if they light a fire, the ashes can burn, and tree roots underground,” Capt Bates said.

“Everyone thinks they’re right to burn off at the moment, but what happens in a week or two, when the weather changes again?”

He said that, while the CFA preferred that people’s properties were clear of green waste and leaf litter, options such as bundled collections or dropping green waste at the tip were available.

All in a day’s work IT’S all in a Day’s Work That’s the name of the new Yarra Valley 99.1FM radio slot on a Friday lunchtime with host Loretta de Vaus.

For two months over the summer, every Friday Loretta will be interviewing a CFA volunteer daytime firefighter or member of the public who has been helped by these CFA volunteers.

The radio slot is part of a Yarra Valley CFA recruitment campaign, looking to recruit volunteer daytime firefighters for 11 local brigades Gruyere, Seville, Hillcrest, Wesburn/Millgrove, Yarra Junction, Wandin, Reefton, Yellingbo,

Hoddles Creek, Warburton and Little Yarra.

Daytime volunteer firefighters are everyday folk like you; they live or work locally here in the region, have families, partners, children, work commitments, social lives and are busy individuals - and among all this, they ‘make time’ to volunteer with CFA. As volunteers, they don’t have to respond to every pager alert; they respond ‘when they can’.

While you’re going about your day at work or on holiday, picking up kids from school or sitting in meetings - daytime volunteer firefighters are going about their usual day, too.

Until their pager goes off.

Then, within minutes, they are at the fire station getting changed and are on a fire truck attending to a call-out.

Tune in to Yarra Valley 99.1FM on Friday lunchtimes to hear their stories and find out what they get out of volunteering with CFA. Who knows, you may decide there’s something in it for you?

She and her partner Jem (also a CFA volunteer firefighter) take it in turns to go to training and respond to emergencies.

As a daytime volunteer firefighter, you only respond when you can to emergency calls during the day. Full training is given, after which you can respond to house fires, bushfires, car accidents and other emergency incidents.

Close-up look at fresh refuge

By KATH GANNAWAY COMMUNITY members had an opportunity on Sunday, 31 January, to have a tour of the new Wesburn-Millgrove Fire Brigade and Community Fire Refuge.

The $1.6 million complex was officially opened in December but an open day scheduled for Sunday, 20 December was cancelled when the temperatures and the fire danger rating rose.

Wesburn-Millgrove CFA Captain Adam Pelling, said the event on Sunday was a great success

with around 200 people taking the opportunity to look over the new facility. “People were really impressed with the building and the fact that we now have a new fire station and a dedicated refuge,� he said.

Brigade members were on hand to help people with their fire plans and provide advice on preparation.

The refuge will be activated if fire is threatening the community, but, as always, the message delivered on the day is that it is very much a last resort.

Speak up if you see something IF YOU see something, say something.

That’s the message Victoria Police and Crime Stoppers are pushing as they work to engage all community members in helping stamp out arson and reckless actions that could start a bushfire.

Deliberately and recklessly lit bush and grass fires can destroy communities, infrastructure, livestock and human life.

Like arson, a recklessly caused fire

is a crime.

Victoria Police say they will pursue anyone who offends in this way and the number of offenders charged has been steadily creasing over the years.

Operation Firesetter was re-activated in January in bushfire arson prone areas.

The operation is a dedicated, high visibility bushfire arson prevention and detection operation focused on highrisk bushfire arson locations and times,

crime prevention activities and management and monitoring of persons of interest.

The penalties for intentionally or recklessly causing a bushfire include up to 15 years in jail and penalties in the tens of thousands of dollars. They are significant.

Police and CrimeStoppers are asking every member of every community to be mindful of their own activities during fire danger periods and be pre-

pared to report suspicious behaviour.

If you believe a person, or vehicle, is behaving in a suspicious manner write down the details.

If you record the details straight away the more accurate they are likely to be, and the more helpful the information will be to police.

If a fire affects your neighbourhood, police are asking that people try to note the description of any people or vehicles that have entered or left the

scene before the fire started.

Also, note any activity in the area before the fire, such as camping, firewood collecting, bushwalkers etc.

Remember the time and location where you first observed the fire.

Any smoke or fire should be reported through triple zero immediately.

Fire has few friends

The fire at Barnawartha was an horrific experience for many. 149572

IN late December last year, bushfires threatened homes and caused much devastation in the Barnawartha-Indigo Valley regions of North East Victoria. This included a 7000ha blaze that destroyed three homes and killed close to 1000 cattle and sheep at Barnawartha. In response to such devastation, and dangers surrounding bushfires in general, Carol Miller has supplied the following message, which was written on 20 December last year. Carol and Terry Miller operate Terry Miller Concrete Tanks: TERRY Miller and I now know from first-hand experience the devastation that bushfires can cause.

We live on 20 acres in Barnawartha and yesterday 15 acres were burnt to the ground.

The fire brigade was terrific and saved our house and shed, but the rest of the property is just a blackened patch.

Fire has no friends and takes no hostages.

All I can say is thankfully we had the concrete water tank (pictures shown).

It survived and provided us with necessary water to bucket the flames around the house and paddocks, to put out the burning logs and spot fires we found.

If the tank had been plastic or tin, it would have melted.

The ferocity of the fire was incredible; and with the winds and the heat, at its peak it was 43 degrees!

My message, as personal as it is, is that no matter what size property you have, from small hobby farms like ours to larger properties, is that you need a good water storage system that

you can rely on.

You cannot ever be too complacent when it comes to fire.

This was in December; and the fact this terrible event happened so early in the fire season means no-one is safe from fire.

I wish all who read this a very safe and fire-free 2016.

YARRA Ranges councillors have expressed their doubts over a pending change of wards for this year’s election, with multicouncillor wards introduced for the first time in the shire.

The Victorian Election Commission handed down the final proposal to restructure the wards that make up the Yarra Ranges Council area in November last year.

The proposed change will see the current nine-ward structure shrunk to a three-ward structure with three councillors per ward.

The planned new ward structure will combine the existing Streeton and Lyster wards with parts of the current Chandler and Walling wards to create a new Streeton Ward that covers the Dandenong Ranges.

The proposed restructure to the wards of the Yarra Ranges Council has caused confusion regarding how the new council system will work best for communities.

The Mail spoke with seven of the nine councillors last week, asking how they felt about the proposed shake-up to the ward structure and what it would mean or them and their communities.

While none of the councillors were entirely in favour of the change, some were more positive than others in their reaction

“If I was to stand again, it wouldn’t make a whole lot of difference for me,” he said.

“Those wards together have a common interest and that makes a difference that doesn’t apply to the other new wards.

“I think we have the better deal out of the three,” he said.

The other Yarra Ranges Councillors including Cr Fiona McAllister, Cr Maria McCarthy and Cr Jason Callanan also said they disagreed with the planned restructure of the wards.

The main issues raised between all the councillors we spoke with was the cost of campaigning increasing drastically and the lack of familiarity the councillors have with their new regions.

Cr Jim Child was the only member of council we spoke to who had an overall positive outlook on the restructure despite making submissions against the change.

“I’ll probably cop criticism from my fellow councillors but believe honestly we can work with both,” he said.

The Mail contacted Minister for Local Government Natalie Hutchins’ office about whether the m, and whether she would consider the sentiments of councillors against the change.

A spokesperson for the minister said a decision on the matter would be made in the “coming months”.

Cr Clarke raised concerns over politically biased alliances being formed between the councillors in the new wards.

“The cost for a candidate to stand will be tripled and that will lead to fewer candidates and parties funding three councillors.

“I think at a council level, it’s better to be independent,” he said.

Representative of the current Walling Ward Cr Len Cox shared Cr Clarke’s concerns about politically biased teams pushing their agenda at election time.

“The difficulties inherent in the preferential system will be further enhanced,” Cr Cox said.

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE ninth annual Belgrave Survival Day saw hundreds of people turn out to Borthwick Park in Belgrave to celebrate the continuation and strength of Indigenous culture.

Survival Day is held on 26 January each year and acknowledges the survival of Indigenous heritage and culture, 200 years after the European arrival in Australia.

The theme for this year’s Survival Day was ‘No Room for Racism’, bringing together people from different cultural backgrounds to appreciate the multiculturalism of modern Australia.

Crowds from all over the Yarra Ranges and further afield attended the day where elders of the local Wurundjeri people and elders of other first nations spoke of their heritage and history.

The ceremony was officially kicked off by Wurundjeri elder Uncle Bill Nicholson, who spoke passionately about acknowledging the past to be able to move forward.

Uncle Bill Nicholson then conducted a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony that all in attendance were invited to participate in.

The event was overseen by MC Uncle Peter Rotumah of Gunditjmara and Bunitj peoples who spoke of the history of his peoples and the importance of recognising the vast history of Indigenous people.

There was also a didgeridoo meditation performed by Gnarnayarrhe Waitaire and traditional dances performed by the Djirri Djirri dance crew.

During the dance performance, members of the crowd were invited to dance along with the Djirri Djirri crew and many took the opportunity to do so.

“Black and white and people of all background dancing together like that is one of the strongest symbols of reconciliation I see today,” Uncle Bill Nicholson said.

The headline act was singer songwriter Uncle Kutcha Edwards of the Mutti Mutti people with musical performances by The Deans and the Mullum Mullum Choir and Hip-Hop Crew.

With stalls and family friendly activities, Survival Day gave everyone a chance to connect with the traditional custodians of the land and learn more about the rich history of Indigenous culture in Australia.

Trad to wander no more

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE second round of funding for the Dandenong Ranges Environmental and Bushfire Fuel Reduction Community Grants and funding for research into wandering trad controls were announced last week.

Federal Member for La Trobe Jason Wood and Environment Minister Greg Hunt visited Belgrave Lake Park on Wednesday 27 January to announce the funding.

“This round of grants is funded through the National Landcare Programme as part of a three-year, three million dollar commitment the Australian Government made to the Dandenong Ranges,” Mr Hunt said.

Community groups are encouraged to apply for the grant funding for small, medium and large projects that work towards improving and maintaining the natural environment of the Hills.

Minister Hunt also announced an extra $200,000 in funding for the CSIRO to develop and test biological controls to fight the noxious weed, wandering trad.

A beetle from New Zealand and a pathogen to cause disease in the weed are the newest weapons being developed and tested in the war against wandering trad.

“This is an important step prior to release into test areas to ensure that Australian native and commercially important plants will not be affected by the leaf beetle and leaf-smut agents,” Mr Hunt said.

So far this year, no fatalities have been recorded for the Yarra Ranges, with one recorded in Cardinia.

BEGRAVE police with the Sheriff’s Office issued 12 on-the-spot fines and recouped $33,920 for unpaid warrants on Thursday 28 January.

An automatic number plate recognition site was set up on Monbulk-Silvan Road in Silvan where 12 people were issued $758 on-the-spot fines for unregistered vehicles.

Sheriffs also executed 97 unpaid fines and one person will be facing court for driving without an interlocker device in their vehicle.

“Most of the excuses we heard were people were unaware their registration was due,” Sergeant Carolyn Sunderland from Belgrave police said.

“It is a timely reminder to check when your rego renewal is due as people tend to forget without the stickers.

“Make sure you check the date, put it in your phone or calendar or you will be issued an on-the-spot fine and if the unpaid rego goes over three months, you will need roadworthy to register your vehicle.

“People need to be aware vehicles have to be registered for TAC and insurance coverage,” Sgt Sunderland said.

FROM Friday 22 January to Tuesday 26 January, police flooded the roads across the state as part of Operation Amity, which targets bad driver behaviours over the Australia Day long weekend.

In the Yarra Ranges, nine people were caught drink driving, while another nine were caught driving with illicit drugs in their system.

Though the statistics indicate two less drink drivers than in 2015, it shows a marked rise in drug drivers being charged - no-one was caught driving under the influence of drugs last year.

Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Sergeant Simon Coverley said this was because police had only recently been trained in roadside drug testing, and so weren’t able to test for it last year.

Busting stray myths FOR some, finding a lost or stray animal poses an ethical dilemma as to the best course of action to find the rightful owner.

Social media ‘lost and found’ and ‘community noticeboard’ sites are increasingly used to reunite lost pets with their owners.

While the return of a lost animal to an owner is a great outcome, the use of social media also presents several risks that must be taken into account.

There are many considerations.

How do you know the person claiming to be the owner is in fact the owner?

Animal ownership can only be verified by checking the animal’s registration and microchip details.

Is the animal’s welfare at risk?

The found dog or cat may be regularly escaping and the owner not taking preventative action.

Animals at large are commonly at risk of road trauma.

What is the animal’s history?

While the found animal may appear to be good-natured, it may pose a risk to other

animals or people.

Your local council or community animal services shelters (such as Animal Aid) are best placed to ensure a lost pet is properly reunited with its owner.

There are many myths that manifest on social media about taking a found animal to a shelter.

These include: Myth: If a ranger is called, they will take the animal to a shelter to be put down.

Fact: Shelters only keep an animal for a certain number of days and then they are euthanised.

Myth: Council animal services are just a money-grabbing exercise.

Around one in four cats are reunited.

Death trap on roads

“It’s graded four times a year, but it deteriorates in less than a week after it’s graded,” he said.

“Residents and visitors alike cannot use the road safely and we are sick of Band-Aid solutions that don’t last.”

A group of residents have made multiple requests to council over the last four months to have the road corrected with a lasting solution, such as sealing the surface or grading it more frequently.

“The dust is also awful, I can’t even enjoy sitting outside with my 10-month-old daughter,” local resident Elise Gittus said.

Yarra Ranges Director of Environment and Engineering Mark Varmalis said council had proposed a special charge scheme to surface the road but there wasn’t enough support.

“Council has surveyed residents of that section of Mount Morton Road three times over the past 10 years to gauge their support for a special charge scheme to construct the road.”

“However, on each occasion, less than 70 per cent of landowners were in support,” Mr Varmalis said.

“The last survey of residents was undertaken in 2013. Council would be happy to reconsider a special charge scheme for the road if there was more landowner support.”

Residents of Mount Morton Road said the last special charge scheme that was proposed would require $18,000 per household to surface the road on top of yearly rate costs to households.

“Rates keep going up and we are getting nothing for it,” resident of Mount Morton Road Ed Crisp said.

MEMBERS of the Hills community don’t feel safe driving on certain roads in the area that need urgent repairs.

A water main leak at the intersection of Mast Gully Road and Elliott Road in Upwey and the deteriorating condition of Mount Morton Road in Belgrave Heights have caused local residents to speak out.

Bill McMahon from Upwey has seen a water main leak in the middle of Mast Gully Road become increasingly more hazardous since it started leaking through the road surface in November last year.

“It’s been patched on and off for years before this, but it’s never really been fixed properly,” Mr McMahon said.

The water leaking through the surface of the road and pooling under the road surface has caused the road to sag in places and the surface to erode.

“It’s such a waste of water, it's pouring out like that,” Mr McMahon said.

“I’m really worried it’s going to cause a serious accident.”

A spokesperson from South East Water said on Friday 29 January the leak was not part of the water system they manage but it was a known issue.

“The leak on Mast Gully Road is due to a failure in a nearby privately owned water supply service.”

“While it is usually the responsibility of the property owner to maintain private mains infrastructure, South East Water has worked with the owner on a plan for repair, and we expect the leak to be fixed early next week,” the spokesperson said.

Another group of residents have raised concerns about the condition of Mount Morton Road in Belgrave Heights and the safety of drivers using the road.

Persistence pays dividend

By PETER DOUGLAS WHEN it comes to fundraising, Emerald mother Cherylee Studham didn’t realise the level of passion her daughter possessed.

Tahlia Studham, 13, first approached her mother about holding a fund-raising event for the Cancer Council in November last year.

Cherylee’s response was “what a nice idea, love” and she put the notion in the back of her mind.

However, in December, when dates had not yet been discussed, Tahlia became quite upset and further pressed her mother.

In addition, Tahlia began to write letters to local retailers in Emerald and was persistent in seeking support, often visiting them multiple times to ensure the manager had read her letter.

The result was a breast cancer fund-raiser held last Saturday, 23 January, which raised an incredible $1207 on the day, with online donations hitting the $200 mark.

Cherylee said she was exceptionally proud of her daughter’s efforts.

“It’s just the sort of person she is, she just likes to help people,” she said.

“She’s known people with breast cancer, which is why she chose that cause, but she just wants to help others.”

She said Tahlia simply wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer.

“Tahlia would take the letter into the shop and make sure it was read, she was very persistent,” she said.

“She received donations from pretty much all the shops she approached.

“What a wonderful community we live in.”

Tahlia and Cherylee were able to organise 50 guests for their home fund-raiser.

The attendees paid a $10 entry fee, though many contributed more.

Tahlia had organised the food and drinks, as well as the raffles and a game of ‘guess the number of jellybeans’.

The young fund-raiser said the funds raised wouldn’t have been possible without the Emerald business community.

Emerald volunteers honoured

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS TWO members of the Emerald community have been awarded Australia Day Awards as part of Cardinia Shire Council’s 2016 Australia Day Celebrations.

Molly White was awarded Young Citizen of the Year for her work with Emerald CFA and Emerald RSL president Peter Maloney was awarded Senior Citizen of the Year.

The winners were announced by Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Jodie Owen who said it was the people of Cardinia that made it what it was.

“Cardinia Shire is a great place to live, work and raise a family, and this is in part due to the many incredible people who go above and beyond to support their community,” she said.

Fourteen-year-old Ms White is currently in Year 9 at Emerald Secondary College as well as the captain of the juniors at Emerald CFA. “I feel very proud to have received this award and it is something I will remember and treasure forever,” she said.

Ms White joined the CFA over three years ago, has been a mentor at K-Motion After School Program for four years, and has aspirations of joining the Salvation Army and becoming a police officer.

“I believe I am who I am because of all the things I do and the people I am surrounded by “My goal at this stage of my life is to graduate high school and to help out with the Salvation Army, but most importantly to be a good person,” Ms White said.

Peter Maloney has been involved with the Emerald RSL for about four years and was instrumental in creating the new Anzac Walk and Anzac Place in Emerald.

The walk and other memorials commemorate the 32 soldiers from Emerald that fought in WWI but never had the chance to return home.

“I’m very humbled to receive this award,” he said.

“There are a lot more deserving senior citizens in Cardinia than I but I am delighted to accept the award in behalf of the Emerald community.

“Also, on behalf of the RSL and on behalf of all the men and women who put the Anzac walk together.

“This award is recognition of all the work done by those men and women,” he said.

The winners of Australia Day Awards will be presented with their awards at a free Australia Day Citizenship event at the Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham on Australia day.

Opinion The revolution IN HIS letter (‘Growth or sanity’, Mail, 19 January), Barry Callanan would have us pursue a growthless economy as the sane solution to an economy reliant on endless expansion.

There is another way of looking at this, however, which is fostered by the revolutions in global organisation that we are undergoing; change as sweeping as the industrial revolution.

Novel forms of social organisation bring unprecedented dilemmas, as well as new perspectives on how to manage them.

Just as the belief in ‘gift-giving’ to control the vagaries of catastrophic natural events passed into history with the rise of an empirical understanding of weather, so today the expectation that the pursuit of economic growth or non-growth can be used as a yardstick to measure human progress towards a social ideal is waning.

Networked forms of informationsharing have highlighted the futility of this pursuit of empty symbolic assessments like growth or nongrowth for the illusion that they make very complex social dynamics comprehensible; it actually confers no real capacity to engage with the key issues of our day.

The history of social revolutions shows repeatedly that what was viewed initially as the problem to ‘be fixed’ was seen later to be a precondition for a more viable mode of living.

Allowing then our current environmental/political ‘solutions’ to get stuck in this ‘yardstick’ template doesn’t say much for our potential to govern wisely in the Anthropocene.

Merlino calls for care MONBULK MP James Merlino is urging residents in the Dandenong Ranges to consider joining up to become a foster carer.

Mr Merlino said it would be the little things that counted - like a trip to the football or sharing a meal at the table - that were the focus of a new campaign to attract the next generation of carers.

He said carers were sorely needed to help care for children and youth who could not live with their families.

“We want more local residents to join our amazing foster carers, who open their hearts and homes to children in need,” he said.

ON Christmas Eve of 2015, five talented students from the Hart School of Dance performed with triple Gold Logie award-winning recipient Daryl Somers at the Vision Australia’s Carols

by Candlelight at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

The carols are annually broadcast to an audience of more than 2.5 million people by Channel 9 and boast an incredible line up of well-known Australian stars.

These little girls tapped up a storm in what became the highlight of the night with Daryl.

They also interacted backstage with stars such as Delta Goodrem, Marina Prior and David Hobson.

Somers, who is best-known as an Australian television personality and musician, was terrific with the children and the girls got such a thrill from performing in front of such a big crowd.

The Hart School of Dance provides excellent training for professional performances such as this and the girls were well prepared.

Their stagecraft was a credit to them and their humbleness shown is part of what makes Hart School of Dance a ‘one of a kind’ for dance tuition.

The Hart School of Dance offers tuition in jazz, tap, musical theatre, hip-hop, ballet, contemporary and lyrical styles.

The school is this year celebrating its 40th year of children’s dance education.

THE Selby Folk Club has hosted some fine musicians in its time, but not many more talented with a guitar than Justin Bernasconi.

After first rising to prominence with folk group The Stillsons, Bernasconi has been impressing audiences with his debut solo album, Winter Pick.

The guitar talent will now unveil more solo material at the Selby club on Friday, 5 February, with doors opening at 7.30pm (tickets $10).

Bernasconi was born in Lon-

don but arrived in Australia in 2004 and he told the Mail it was a life-changing move.

“I headed to Australia to uncover the renowned Melbourne music scene,” he said.

“There was always an affinity with Australia for me.

“When I was younger, everything changed for me when I heard AC/DC.” He formed The Stillsons with Cat Canteri and Ben Franz in 2006 and they released three highly acclaimed albums.

But in more recent years, Bernasconi has been finding his feet as a solo artist.

Interestingly, he felt the decision was not all of his own doing.

“The songwriting I was doing probably led me that way,” he said.

His influences range across many genres, including folk, bluegrass, ragtime and blues.

By STEVE UTTING ONCE again most of the Monbulk Friday night junior teams were washed out (despite the best effort of the players) to continue a disappointing season from a weather perspective.

Both Under 10s teams (including the Under 10s Maroon team attached) did manage to brave the elements and complete some sort of game amid the puddles.

A reminder to junior families that Round 8 is to be replayed on Wednesday 10 February. Check Mycricket for details.

The senior and Under 16s teams started a two-day match on Saturday (scores below).

Bears attack stuns Gully

By STEVE BROWN THE Basin opening bowling combination of Ty McKenzie and Jarryd Debernadi routed the Ferntree Gully batting line-up for just 67 runs at the Wally Tew Reserve on the opening day of round 10 of the Norm Reeves Shield.

The Gully could only manage to occupy the crease for 35 overs as McKenzie bagged 6/51 from 18 overs.

Debernadi was equally as impressive with figures of 3/13 from 16 overs, which included 10 maidens.

Batsmen in the Ferntree Gully camp have lost their mojo in recent weeks and a loss in this game will see them drop out of the four.

At stumps, The Basin Bears were well on top at 7/159 with Jake Best continuing his good form with the bat falling for 85.

Monbulk scored 181 at Eildon Park in slow conditions on the back of opener Shane Cosstick’s 70.

First-change bowler Andrew Brown collected the best return of 3/42 in what should be a tight affair.

Ben Stallworthy (60) and Bryn Gaunt, unbeaten on 59, held Johnson Park’s innings together as the Sharks mustered 232, the highest score of the day against Mt Gate.

Medium-pace bowler Luke Bowyer returned to form with five wickets for the Gators.

Upwey-Tecoma, fighting to keep their finals hopes alive, need a win against top side Knoxfield.

Batting first, Upwey posted 161 as Steve Moore battled hard for his half century while spinners Zac Wilson and Trent Scholfield slowed down the runrate with three wickets apiece.

The Tigers target may not be enough as Knoxfield has answered all challenges this season and has the batting firepower to bat all day.

At Knox Gardens, Belgrave has a game on their hands as they were dismissed by the Falcons for only 144.

Dean Shannon was re-elected captain, Mike Litchfield, secretary and Ken Sumsion, president.

After doing sterling work for a couple of years, Ken Hill and wife Stephanie retired as treasurers and were replaced by Philip Crossley.

Peter Clowes will once again head up the seniors pennant team while young and brilliant Broc Reynolds will lead the handicap team.

An eager and wholly committed committee is lining up behind them

and Mick Petrie drew with Philip Crossley, Ross Martin and Geoff Whittaker with 87 points.

Next to nearly grab some room on the podium were Steve Town, Peter Jones and John Keys with 83, with the others blaming each other for messing up the round.

The ladies team who topped the tree were Gracie White, Leanne Morison and Jennifer Marsh.

They taught the other ladies a thing or two about playing this format with a commanding victory.

Bob Kennedy was nearest the pin on the 4th, Leigh Morison the 7th, John Fisher the 12th, John Carvill the 13th and, once again, Peter

Clowes grabbed the pro pin cash on the 18th.

At Over the Fence Grumbling (OFG), it was a round of stroke off the blues blocks.

Young Broc Reynold (16), just before going back to school, grabbed the comp by the ears and romped home with a nett score of 62.

Philip Crossley (22) was next with 64, followed by Dennis Fuller (14) on 66 while Ian Scott (250 and Mike Litchfield (12) both carded 69 rounds.

They all line-up again next Saturday to vie for the February VGL medal.

Only two of the scores counted on each hole and were added up for the team total, while one was cast aside as rubbish.

It emerged the team of Dean Shannon, Mike Litchfield and Ken Hill trumped the field in a canter with 93.

YARRA Ranges Athletics Open Men’s and Open Women’s teams qualified for the Athletics Victoria Shield Final to be held at Lakeside Stadium on Saturday 6 February.

The top two teams from each zone in each grade qualify for the AV Shield final.

The Yarra Ranges Athletics Open Men’s team finished on top of the Division 2 ladder to set up an exciting end to the 2015-'16 summer season.

A second place in the Women’s Division 2 competition was enough for the Open Women’s team to also qualify for the final.

The club is extremely excited

about both Open teams qualifying for finals, testament to the consistent performances of athletes throughout the summer shield competition and the increasing depth in all events.

The club looks forward to a competitive showing in the final next weekend.

Athletes in the Under 20s, 18s, 16s and 14s continued to build towards the Victorian Junior Track and Field Championships to be held at Lakeside Stadium from 1214 February, with some impressive performances at the round 10 of AV Shield.

Numerous personal bests on Saturday suggest the junior athletes are preparing well for the up-

coming championships.

These championships are a qualifier for the Australian Championships to be held in Perth in early March.

Little Athletics is slowly building towards the championship season with some impressive performances by the younger athletes.

The club is excited about the enthusiasm of athletes as they challenge themselves each week.

Several Yarra Ranges athletes competed in Bendigo over the weekend at the Victorian Multi Event championships.

Black Saturday Remembrance Cruise This event at Healesville is the first to roll out, this Saturday 6 February.

While the emphasis is on commemoration of the Black Saturday Bushfires, and a display of resilience and remembrance, it is expressed through what has become a hugely supported car and bike cruise.

The event displays the strength of the Yarra Valley communities while raising money for the local CFAs who give their time to protect and serve local communities.

The cruise will depart the Lilydale Industrial car park at 3pm, travelling through some of the towns affected by the fires and conclude in Healesville railway precinct at 4pm for a remembrance ceremony at 5pm.

Organiser Stacey Kinsmore encouraged people to attend the remembrance ceremony, see the cars as they roll into the station and help fund-raise for the CFA. Victorian 4WD Show at Wandin The Victorian 4WD Show hosted by the Land Rover Owners Club of Victoria is next in line, on Sunday 21 February.

Billed as Australia’s largest outdoor 4WD event, it attracts a large number of visitors each year and provides a great opportunity to look and learn about the latest accessories, motor vehicles, campers and modifications available to four-wheel drivers.

The show is known for its great range of exhibitors and there is also a large representation of local 4WD clubs ready and willing to answer questions about 4WD clubs and enjoying your 4x4 safely.

Demonstrations in the grandstand arena and out in the field provide lots of excitement and the opportunity to see experienced 4Wdrivers testing their skill in a range of scenarios.

There are also lots of children’s activities including free train rides, a jumping castle and a giant slide.

The Victorian 4WD Show is held at Wandin Park Equestrian Centre, 305 Victoria Road, Wandin North.

Wandin Custom Car and Bike Show This show is a grassroots, familyfocused event that has grown extraordinarily over the past six or seven years.

Held on the third Wednesday evening of each month from October through to March, the atmosphere is relaxed and the pre-1985 cars and allera bikes have that extra bit of shine as the setting sun reflects off the duco and chrome.

Gates open at 6pm, and in addition to row after row of magnificent motors, there are lots of local community groups providing great food and drink, lots of room for the kids and very often live music.

Organiser Cindy Redden-Vitale said in a previous interview with the Mail that her key goal was to get people into the valley to see how beautiful it was and inspire them to come back with their families.

The show raises thousands of dollars each year for the Royal Children’s Hospital and local organisations.

The next show is on Wednesday 17 February at the Wandin East Recreation Reserve, corner of MonbulkSeville and Old Baker roads.

Showing an appreciation for under the bonnet art. 146894 Mountain District Car and Bikes Show @ Healesville The Mountain District Car and Bike Show is stepping up a notch with its 10th Anniversary Mega Show at the Don Road Sporting Complex in Healesville on Sunday 10 April.

Run by enthusiasts Jacqueline and Greg Sheppard, the show has become an annual pilgrimage for competitors and spectators from all around the Yarra Valley and beyond.

They have pulled out all stops to make this a special and spectacular display of hot roads, classic, custom and vintage cars, classic and custom bikes and trikes, utes, Chev/F-trucks and some that defy categorisation.

There’ll be trophies, prizes, trade alley and on stage, Jump N Jive and Itchy Fingers, will keep the music flowing, and there will be lots of affordable children’s entertainment.

As with the previous event, this show has raised thousands for local charities over the past decade, while providing a great day out for thousands of people - many of them attending in family groups.

Gates open to the public at 10am.
