STACEY Brown cried when the news finally came through that the speed limit outside Dandenong High School was to be reduced to 60 kilometres per hour.

Ms Brown’s 13-year-old daughter Shaye died when she was struck by a car while crossing the Princes Highway near the James Street intersection in March 2013.

At the time the speed limit was 80kmh.

Amid her grief, Ms Brown mounted her Wipe off 20 campaign involving a petition and a protest at the site of her daughter’s death.

Ms Brown believes Shaye may have survived had the speed limit been lower.

“If that (60kmh) was the speed limit when my daughter got hit she wouldn’t have suffered the same injuries,” Ms Brown said.

“I just hope that people do slow down and, touch wood, there are no more accidents.

“I wouldn’t want any other parent to go through what I’ve experienced.”

The new limit applies to the stretch of highway between Fifth Avenue and Henty Street.

According to VicRoads, 17,000 cars use the stretch of highway in front of the school daily in both directions.

Ms Brown said the lower speed limit would also make the area safer for pedestrians, particularly those using parks in the area.

She said she took some small comfort in the fact that something positive had come from Shaye’s death.

“This campaign kept me going. I did it in her honour. She was always a fighter. Her nickname was Little Miss Social Worker because she was always helping everyone.

“I think she would be quite proud of me.

“When the news came through I could feel Shaye smiling down at me.”

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams supported Ms Brown’s campaign, lobbying VicRoads for the speed change.

Ms Williams said Dandenong High School students recommended the speed reduction during a road safety workshop held late last year.

“This workshop was about engaging with the school students that cross the Princes Highway daily and giving them the opportunity to help us improve road safety along this busy section of road,” she said.

“Reducing the speed limit will improve safety for all road users, in particular local school students riding and walking to school.”

With her Wipe off 20 crusade at an end, Ms Brown said she felt strong enough to move on with her life.

She hasn’t been able to work since the accident and hopes to rejoin the workforce soon.

“Shaye would want me to move on. She wouldn’t want me to be stuck like I am now.”

Parents’ class action over closed school

By NARELLE COULTER PARENTS are backing an online petition which is urging the State Government to reopen Maralinga Primary School.

Greater Dandenong councillor Roz Blades started the change.org petition which has so far attracted 99 signatures.

The petition requests that “the State Government keep this school given the amount of young families moving into the area. There is no primary school east of Chandler Road.”

Maralinga closed at the end of 2014 and all pupils moved to nearby Chandler Park Primary School following a merger process drawn-out over five years.

The petition has the backing of parents such as Soula Makridis who was incredulous that the State Government would sell a school site in a growing suburb like Keysborough.

Ms Makridis is secretary at Springside Kindergarten and said many parents she knows are opting to send their children to public primary schools in Dingley.

She said many parents believed Chandler Park Primary School was overcrowded.

Ms Makridis said she would have enrolled her own daughter next year

at Maralinga had it been open. Instead, she will probably send her to St Mary’s Primary School in Dandenong.

“There has been huge growth in Keysborough over the last 10 years.

There are all these people looking for schools,” she said.

“Lots of people don’t have a choice, they can’t afford private schools.

“Do they (the State Government) think about what people are going to do with their kids?“ She urged other parents in the area to support the petition.

“Please help. We need to spread the word.

“They need to open the school up because it is putting so much pressure on families.”

Cr Blades said the demographics were changing in Noble Park and Keysborough east of Chandler Road, and young families were once again moving in.

She said there was no nearby primary school for families in the area immediately north of Maralinga.

“The very real hope is that the government might change its mind on Maralinga Primary School,” Cr Blades said.

“We’ve got insufficient schools and we need more.”

At their 14 December meeting, councillors agreed to write to the Education Minister and local MPs asking the government to outline the abandoned site’s current status and intentions for it, and to consider reserving it for future educational use.

Cr Blades said she would raise the issue again at the council meeting on 25 January.

“Kids in Keysborough South have nowhere to go to school. Parents I know are going out of the area and they don’t want to.”

Cr Blades said residents were also worried about what sort of housing would be constructed on the Maralinga site.

An education department spokesperson said that afte the merger with Chandler Park, the “vacated site at Maralinga Avenue was deemed surplus to education requirements and placed on the Department’s disposal list for sale“.

“This followed extensive consultation with local communities, and reflected the will of the community to undergo a merger onto the Chandler Park site.

“Chandler Park Primary School received $500,000 for architectural planning to finalise merger works in last year’s budget, and it has capacity to accommodate future growth in the area.“

Supporters of Maralinga voiced their concern on change.org.

Jenny Mayo wrote “our local community kindergarten families living in the vicinity of Maralinga Primary School have no option to attend a neighbourhood State Government primary school that is within walking distance from their homes.”

Daryl Pitman said “we are in dire need of more schools in the area not one less” and Springvale South residents Kath Cushen said “I believe we need to keep as many schools open and this is one of the better ones”.

Allie Ford of Noble Park wrote “schools are the hubs of our communities. They are where inclusion and multiculturalism start. They are where we become more sustainable.

They provide places for people to meet, learn and work together.”

“It should never have been closed. It’s close to so many families!!! Keep it open !!!” wrote Melissa Gorham.

Helen Pitman of Noble Park said the “shortage of schools in the area is ridiculous. We need more schools not less. The area needs Maralinga Primary plus a couple more!!“ To add support to the petition go to https://www.change.org/p/stategovernment-of-victoria-save-maralinga-primary-school.

Rotarians put hands up for bomb victims

“The hands are supplied in kits of 10 and it takes two people two hours to assemble each hand,” Mr Cantwell said.

“We’re asking local businesses to sponsor a hand and have a representative come and help us assemble it.

“When they have enough hands assembled they will send a team overseas to fit the hands.

“Each hand will have the name of the person who assembled it and the sponsor.”

Each kit costs $4000, or $400 per hand.

Test driveaway charge A MAN who allegedly stole a $120,000 Mercedes coupe while taking it for a test drive in Dandenong has been charged with theft and traffic offences.

Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit officers charged the 21-year-old Yarraville man on Monday 18 January in relation to the incident on Friday 15 January.

He was arrested at a home in Tullamarine and the Mercedes was recovered and returned to its owner.

The man faced Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on Monday 18 January.

Dandenong Detective Senior Constable Ben Oliver said it was the video footage requested to be taken by the Yarraville man that helped track down the stolen car.

“The footage was on the owner’s phone,” Sen Cost Oliver said. “My advice for anyone selling a car on Car Sales would be to obtain some form of identification before letting them take your car for a test drive.”

Suspicious fire DETECTIVES are investigating a suspicious grass fire lit at EastLink Reserve near the Dandenong showgrounds.

The CFA was called to the small fire, about two metres square, about 2.30pm on Wednesday 13 January and put it out before any property could be damaged.

A NOBLE Park man was charged with trafficking methylamphetamine after police executed warrants throughout Melbourne on Thursday 21 January.

Six people have been charged with a series of drug trafficking offences and were remanded in custody overnight, and were to face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday 22 January.

Drugs, drug manufacturing equipment and a number of firearms were seized on Thursday 21 January by the clandestine laboratory squad, at addresses in Thomastown, Noble Park, Deer Park and Maribyrnong.

The operation started at 7am on Thursday morning and a property in Jenkins Street, Noble Park, was one of the five addresses searched.

DANDENONG Rotarians and businesses are giving landmine victims a helping hand.

They assembled 10 prosthetic hands at Le Pine Funerals in Dandenong on Wednesday 16 December.

Rotary Club of Dandenong’s Don Cantwell said the event was supporting Building Hands for Landmine Victims, a Rotary Australia World community service project.

He said about 384,000 people had lost one or both hands to landmines, and most were children.

“There are 120 million landmines still set in the world, mostly in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia,” Mr Cantwell said.

“They are being cleared at the rate of only 100,000 per year. At this rate it will take 1200 years to clear all the mines!”

So the Rotary Club of Dandenong approached local businesses for help to support landmine victims.

JACK JOHNSON IS THE AUTHOR OF WHEN THE CLOCK STRIKES, A FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF GROWING UP IN DANDENONG, HIS YEARS TENDING TO THE CITY’S PIPES AND DRAINS AS A PLUMBER AND BRINGING UP A FAMILY WITH WIFE FRANCES IN THEIR BELOVED HOME IN MACPHERSON STREET.

Dunny nightman had a Wyatt Earp touch BEFORE Dandenong got sewerage in 1936, most houses did not have kitchen sinks or hot water services.

We washed the dishes by pouring a kettle of boiling water into a tin dish which sat on a Kauri pine draining board.

The first laundry troughs were made of Kauri pine before we got the first reinforced concrete ones.

Our weatherboard house in McCrae Street had a dunny that was a classic and had the aura of a past century both in materials and style.

It must have been crafted totally by hand by an Australian Michaelangelo or the da Vinci of dunny builders.

The door was ledged and braced with a saw-toothed top.

It was built of wide tongue and

grooved V-jointed Baltic flooring and held in place by black cast-iron fancy shaped T-hinges.

The door opener was a matching cast-iron handle and thumb latch.

The floor was Baltic pine as were the regency lining boards.

The seat was a wall-to-wall slab of Kauri pine with a hole skilfully cut out on the splay by a keyhole saw.

The removed piece of pine had a

carved handle screwed to it and it then became the slip in lid.

The seat itself had developed a French polished sheen from the years of the bottoms of people who whiled away their time there reading the cut up pieces of toilet paper, produced mainly by the Herald and Weekly Times.

A recessed box in the lining board wall was used to store the toilet paper which was impaled on a long nail.

This toilet of ours looked so out of character with our modest house I often thought it may have been carted there as a complete unit.

The night cart man was true to his name. He came in the night with his two-horse wagon carrying a doubledecker load of black dunny cans with snap-on lids.

Coming into the yard to exchange our full can for an empty one, he looked like Wyatt Earp in his broadbrimmed flat-topped hat and long dark leather coat.

I do clearly remember seeing him one time in the daylight. On that occasion, as I came round the McCrae Street corner into Power Street past old Mrs Prentice’s house, I witnessed a traumatic incident.

The night man had his wagon at the end of the back lane near Mr Butler’s back gate. He was breaking in a new horse to double harness.

The side of his wagon was down and he had just placed a full can on the bottom rack. As he pulled an empty can from the top tier at the front of the wagon he lost his grip.

That caused the can to lose its lid

and crash with a hell of a noise onto the iron rim of the wagon wheel.

This spooked the new horse, causing it to bolt and stir up the other horse.

As they sped round the corner into Langhorne Street, past Mr Butler’s immaculately kept lawns and garden, two full cans fell from the wagon.

They both spilled onto the footpath right at Mr Butler’s front gate, with Wyatt Earp running after the horses yelling “woah you silly bastards”.

At last they stopped on the wide nature trip of Merlin in Langhorne Street and he then led them back and with a small shovel proceeded to clean up the mess. Ironically, Mr Butler would go on to be the president or engineer of the first Dandenong Sewerage Authority, which eventually put the nightman out of business.

Aboriginal flag to fly

GREATER Dandenong Council plans to fly the Aboriginal flag alongside the Australian flag and its own banner at Dandenong Civic Centre.

Councillors sought a report on erecting a third flag pole at the Lonsdale Street venue to facilitate the plan at their 14 December meeting.

The report will include engagement with Aboriginal community leaders and consider other example jurisdictions where the policy has been implemented.

AVOCARE is moving to Dandenong South where it will expand its work-forthe-dole programs and charitable work.

Founded in 2003, Avocare currently operates from two sites, an office in Robinson Street and a warehouse in Cheltenham Road.

Founder Trish Keilty said as demand for Avocare’s services had grown so had the demand for space - especially in the warehouse, which handled more than 2 million kilograms of food last financial year.

She was thrilled to sign a new lease on a 3500 square metre space in Zilla Court, Dandenong South, before Christmas.

Staff and work-for-the-dole participants will move in March.

“We needed more space and more opportunities to do more projects,“ Ms Keilty explained.

The charity’s food rescue operation provides the equivalent of 51,000 meals to hungry City of Greater Dandenong residents each week.

“The move will allow us to expand our food relief. We supply 260 charities at the moment. The need is really there for more,“ Ms Keilty said.

The new headquarters will also allow Avocare to also provide material aid in the form of furniture and white goods.

“If an asylum seeker seeker or family in need want a lounge suite or washing machine, then hopefully we will have that available for them.“ Work-for-the-dole participants will be involved with repairing and testing and tagging furniture and white goods before distribution to needy households.

Ms Keilty said the new headquarters would give job seekers the chance to experience work in a “real work environment“.

“Our aim is to get them skilled and

“We have good results. On average 45-55 per cent of our participants return to work after their six month placement.“ Ms Keilty is brimming with ideas for new work for the dole projects.

The scope of current projects range from candle making, to organising charity trivia nights, rebuilding a coastal boardwalk, collating an emergency relief directory for Greater Dandenong, billycart construction and digitising the Dandenong Journal.

IN LINDEN Barry’s eyes the world would be a better place if everyone just tried “5 per cent more”.

A humble, Narre Warren father of two, Linden, has spent more time in the supermarket this month than he has done in 15 years.

And it was a newspaper article on struggling drought stricken farmers in northern Victoria that lead him to the shops.

“I just read it and thought that’s no good and came out the next day and thought buggar it I better do

something to help them,” said Linden, owner of Cardboard Cartons in Dandenong.

“Sometimes you just got to try a bit harder, and once you get outside of Melbourne you see how dry it is,” he said.

So he and his 18-year-old son Lachlan piled 16 trolleys worth of toiletries and groceries into a van and drove the seven hours to Dingee and back earlier this month.

“We did it all in one day,” Linden said.

The items were donated to East

Loddon Community Centre president Leanne Welsh, who started a food bank for 30 farming families under financial strain.

And since the delivery Linden and Lachlan have returned to help Dingee volunteers package his generous donation - which took him three hours to buy.

“Lachie, I and half a dozen ladies packed up the food ready to be distributed by the Salvos outreach,” Linden said.

have vowed they will do it all again.

“The delivery came to 70 parcels for families most in need and you don’t have to have a link to the area to be able to help someone,” Linden said.

“We don’t have any ties in Dingee but give us two months and we will do another load.”

Originally Linden wasn’t keen to have his donation made public but has since changed his mind, in the hope that his efforts will remind others that they, too, can put in an extra 5 per cent.

KEEN cyclist Travis Hill believes warning signs could have prevented the death of a Wantirna man who was found in water along the Dandenong Creek Trail.

Police believe they uncovered the body of a missing Wantirna man aged in his forties near a bridge on the Dandenong Creek Trail on Monday 18 January about 9.30am.

A missing man, who had left his home to go for a bike ride, was reported to police on Sunday 17 January.

A passer-by alerted authorities to the body and bicycle in the creek and the man’s safety helmet could be seen from the trail.

Upon investigating the

scene, police believe the man was riding downhill when he attempted to brake and collided with bollards before entering the water.

Mr Hill, 35, from Noble Park said he has stopped cycling along the path where the man was found dead because it was “unsafe”.

“The last time I rode along that path would have been two months ago,” he told Star News.

“And I demounted from my bike and walked across that bridge.

“It has no lighting and I haven’t noticed signs warning cyclists to slow down before approaching the hill near the bridge.

“The section where he was found is dangerous and it’s not a really busy track and you are

riding behind a lot of vacant blocks,” he said.

Mr Hill cycles up to four times a week and said he would like to see more safety measures added to the bridge to prevent another tragic accident.

The bridge currently has flexi-bollards that run along the edge.

“I’d like to see some kind of protection for riders and a lot more signage to say slow down leading up to the waterways,” he said.

A section of the creek where the man’s body was located runs parallel with the bike path and police are currently preparing a report for the Coroner.

Star News is awaiting a response from the City of Greater Dandenong on who is responsible for the maintenance of the path and bridge.

“The Southern Metro police region has seen an increase of 9.5 per cent in the past year, driven by statistically significant increases in the Cardinia, Casey and Greater Dandenong Local Government Areas,” CSA Chief Statistician Fiona Dowsley said.

In Greater Dandenong there were 1011 drug use and possession offences in 2015 compared to 882 a year earlier, 160 robbery offences compared to 129, and 5856 reported thefts compared to 4456 in the year previous.

But despite these bumps, in the same period Greater Dandenong saw a decrease of assault and related offences from 1599 to 1569, in sexual offences from 430 to 381, and in stalking offences from 480 to 400.

Across the state there was a six per cent increase for recorded offences compared to the previous year, while victim reports made to police also lifted by 2.5 per cent.

“Weapons and explosives offences and drug use and possession offences have again seen statistically significant increases this quarter,” Ms Dowsley said.

GREATER Dandenong has been listed in the top five areas for crime in the state, according to the most recent crime statistics.

The latest data, released by the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) last month, shows there were 12,351 offences recorded in the Greater Dandenong region from October 2014 to September 2015, up 15.4 per cent from a year earlier when 10,706 offences were reported.

Call to put Jaz on wheels

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS LAUGHTER comes easily in the MakaweZaicz household.

It’s a mark of Dandenong South parents Sue Makawe and Mick Zaicz’s pragmatism that they don’t complain about their daughter Jazmin’s debilitating condition.

‘Jaz’ herself has always been “happy as Larry”, Ms Makawe says. A people person who likes reading books, watching movies, singers and dancers, and making crafts and finger paintings.

Depending on her health, Jaz hopes to celebrate her sixth birthday on 18 January watching the film Kung Fu Panda 3 with family and friends.

The family hates asking for anything, but it has turned to crowd-funding for a desperately needed, modified vehicle. Something that can carry the family, Jaz’s wheelchair and equipment such as a special chair and table, walker, feeding items and clothes.

There are long commutes ahead to Jaz’s school in Seaford, and the family’s tiny twodoor Toyota Echo just doesn’t cut it.

Between her regular bright laughs, Ms Makawe admits parenthood has been vastly different to what she’d imagined.

Ever since Jaz bravely survived as a 23-week premmie, suffered three strokes at birth and spent her first 10 months in neo-natal intensive care.

“You have all the plans for when you have kids. For every parent, the reality is different.

“Our reality is different to others.”

Jaz is chronically burdened with cerebral palsy, deafness, lung disease and quadiplegia - a paralysis of her limbs.

She requires constant assistance with every imaginable task, including being fed through an intravenous stomach tube.

As a treat, she’ll get a taste – just half a teaspoon – of chocolate ice cream.

For her comfort, countless pieces of furniture and equipment are modified at great expense.

Jaz has been regularly ill over the past year, her mother explains.

She has had to miss a lot of kinder - being driven to a raft of “absolutely brilliant” doctors, clinicians and therapists.

All of which underlines how important a new vehicle is to this kind family.

As of last week, they had crowd-funded more than $4000 towards their $30,000 goal.

Volunteers urged to help young refugees A program that helps young refugees settle into life in Australia is calling for volunteers from Dandenong and Keysborough.

Ucan2 volunteers share their life experiences and skills with refugees and give them advice about how to make informed education and career decisions.

The program has supported more than 1000 young people over the past five years by helping them to settle into in all aspects of community life.

This help is especially crucial for young people as they transition from learning English to studying or working.

“Being part of Ucan2 was pretty special since it showed me that young people can change the world if they get the opportunity to gain new experiences and skills,” former Ucan2 volunteer Mandana Azadi said.

“Ucan2 gave me the opportunity to support students settle happily in Melbourne into work and study.

“I was also able to interact with others, share cultural interests and build strong relationships with other volunteers and students.”

Former Ucan2 participant Sajad Sarvari said the program helped him develop his confidence in his new country.

“At first school was really hard and could be overwhelming, but the Ucan2 sessions really helped me understand pathways, how to apply for a job and the Australian working culture,” Sajad said.

Over the past year Ucan2 volunteers have worked with more than 200 students across Melbourne.

Ucan2 volunteers have to commit to 2.5 hours per week for 16 to 18 weeks and training and support is provided.

Up to the task SPRINGVALE Fire Station is putting two new firefighter recruits through their paces.

Joel Cowton, 34, and Peter De Maria, 42, graduated from the 19-week training course at the Victorian Emergency Management Training College on 6 December.

They were among 30 men and women who took up placements at 14 fire stations across the state to work alongside volunteer members.

Springvale Fire Station is one of the state’s busiest and will put Mr Cowton and Mr De Maria’s studies to the test.

Mr De Maria calls Doreen home and previously worked in earthmoving.

“The most rewarding part of the job will be helping people in distress and doing community work,” he said.

Carrum Downs resident Mr Cowton was a Victoria Police officer.

“I am looking forward to engaging with the community, whether it’s teaching children safety around fire at schools or trying to help someone protect their home from a fire,” he said.

“I like the unpredictable nature of being an emergency services worker and the potential to

get the very best out of yourself.”

CFA chief officer Joe Buffone said the hard work wasn’t over.

“They will be combining plenty of on-the-job training with the regular firefighting duties,” he said.

Mr Buffone said the recruits had graduated with the title ‘firefighter’ but the job involved so much more.

“During the last 19 weeks these recruits have tackled everything from school education to driver training and dealing with hazardous materials incidents,” he said.

The David Street MIA clinic has introduced 3D mammography, which reduces false-positive findings and the risk of missing cancers.

The technology is also known as breast tomosynthesis and during scanning, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast

and takes a series of pictures at various angles which are reconstructed into one highquality 3D image.

Radiologist Dr Michael Martin said the scan would reduce problems caused by tissue overlap and structural noise, which could occur in 2D mammography imaging.

“Scans are completed in just seconds and the image quality is quite remarkable,” he said.

“It will help doctors to identify breast cancer with increased precision, ultimately improving outcomes for women.”

IT IS not always the easy money that attracts thieves.

Before Christmas criminals were so desperate for cash that they drilled out the locks on five parking metres in central Dandenong.

Under the cover of darkness, the thieves targeted metres in the King Street car park near Aldi, opposite Dandenong Market on Clow Street, on Hemmings Street about 100 metres from Robinson Street, in the Robinson Street car park opposite Rodd Street, and in the Mason Street car park about 100 metres from Foster Street.

AUCTIONEERS HAMMER OUT THE DEALS

BY GEORGIA WESTGARTH WHETHER on-site or in-room auctions, three Greater Dandenong real estate agents say that selling at auction will result in a more favourable outcome for the vendor.

Auctioneer at I-Sell Springvale Harry Li said on-site auctions maximise emotion and allow competing bidders to draw off each other and the crowd’s atmosphere.

“On average a Dandenong or Springvale on-site auction will pull around 35 people,” Mr Li said.

And it’s the home on the hammer, standing behind the auctioneer, that drives the sale, he said.

“Being on-site acts as a trigger point for buyers, it confirms why they are at the auction and that emotion definitely helps on auction day.”

Mr Li has been selling houses in Springvale for 11 years and has been

an auctioneer for seven years.

He insists that the auction process is transparent.

“In our area people are more aware of auctions and home owners are more inclined to sell at auction now compared to five years ago,” he said.

“And we sell more homes at auction than private sale.”

Stockdale and Leggo Dandenong auctioneer Neil Butler has conducted more than 2400 auctions in his 35-year career and agrees that the understanding around auctions has added to its success.

“It’s totally illegal to give dummy bids now and people became a little cautious of that because it wasn’t true transparency at auction and people became suspicious of the whole method,” Mr Butler said.

“Consumer Affairs do send out inspectors who listen to auctioneers at auction - and it is made quite clear that no false bids are allowed.”

Mr Butler said this requirement means that ‘auction’ is no longer a dirty word and sellers are now aware that an auction is the best way to get the highest price for their property in the shortest amount of time.

“The other beauty of an auction is that the seller gets a five-week lead-up from the time the home goes on the market to the time of auction and it’s heavily marketed, so the vendor gets maximum exposure in a short time,” Mr Butler said.

“It’s an old cliche but you will usually get the best offers in the first 30 days on the market.”

Allison Grant, an auctioneer with Ray White Noble Park, said the majority of her sales are done at in-room auctions.

“We’ve found increasingly over the past five years in-room auctions have become more popular,” Mr Grant said.

“In-room auctions aren’t subject to the weather and if bidders don’t get their first preference on the night they can bid on another property up for auction.”

With more than 25 years’ experience, Ms Grant said she now spends her time working with the buyers, rather than calling out the numbers.

“I assist them with their bidding, encourage them to bid, explain the auction process and for non-English speaking buyers I write down where the current bid is at,” she said.

Ms Grant believes all houses, big and small, sell well at auction, merely due to the competition created during the bidding process.

So whether it’s the clean binding contract made on the vendor’s terms, the accelerated sale process, or the safety net of passing in a home if it doesn’t reach reserve - all three auctioneers agreed selling at auction is a sure bet.

Time for crates to do all the heavy lifting

The sixth Create from a Crate exhibition will open at Walker Street Gallery on Thursday 4 February – its first time in Dandenong in its 12-year history.

“All of the timber used originates from our recycling depot in Dandenong South so it made sense to finally have the exhibition there!” Waste Converters managing director Ward Petherbridge said.

“This year the pallets have been distributed right up the east coast of Australia.

“We have entrants in Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane... even Rockhampton!

“The entries demonstrate that the waste timbers at my site are a valuable and untapped resource material when handled by skilled craftspeople.”

Mr Petherbridge said hundreds of thousands of crates and pallets containing goods and components from all over the world were imported into Australia each year and many ended up in landfill.

“We recycle around 20,000 tonnes annually and this is just the tip of the iceberg,” he said.

“Much of the timber processed at our site is from exotic timber species such as oak, cherry, maple and elm.

“I found it depressing that these quality timbers get pulverised into low-grade mulch, so I ap-

Victorian Woodworkers Association president Jerome Wielans said working within the confines of pallet timber required a high level of creativity, ingenuity and skill.

“The competitors are generally more comfortable working with fine timbers, so it is inspiring to see what they produce from discarded timber,” he said.

“It is a real test of their workmanship.”

Will Matthysen won the last Create from a Crate challenge with a clock.

“He even made the cogs and wheels out of timber from the pallet,” Mr Petherbridge said.

This year’s creations will be on display until Saturday 27 February.

Open season for wildcard

By JARROD POTTER MAKING the most of his wildcard entry, Omar Jasika excelled on his home court to advance to the second round of the Australian Open.

Raised in Endeavour Hills - where he honed his skills - Jasika, 18, has arrived in the big time after claiming a four-set thriller over hard-serving Ukranian Illya Marchenko.

Not many gave the Australian Open wildcard entrant a chance to advance, but Jasika claimed his pass to the second round the hard way.

Jasika powered through his Grand Slam debut 6-4, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 as the crowd got behind its next champion-in-the-making.

With the Omar Army - the self-styled fan club of Jasika - proudly roaring in the background for the 18-year-old, Jasika broke Marchenko late in the fourth set before serving out to take the win in two hours and 34 minutes.

He’s been in phenomenal form in recent years as he claimed the 2014 US Open’s boys singles and doubles tournaments - winning both finals matches on back-to-back playing days.

In that tournament, Jasika showed the first signs of greatness to come when he backed up his doubles victory with Japanese partner Naoki Nakagawa 6-3, 7-6 (6) over Brazillian pair Joao Menezes and Rafael Matos by claiming the coveting boys singles title, knocking over France’s Quentin Jalys 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.

It puts his name up there as one of Australia’s rising star prospects alongside Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis and with his win on Monday, it’s clear many more will remember his name from now on.

“It’s always good I guess to have more upand-coming Australians and it’s a pretty big honour,” Jasika said in 2014.

“A few more people know my name now so I’m pretty happy for that and hopefully I can get some more results in the future.”

Jasika’s rise through the ranks has him knocking on the door of the world top-200 and he now faces high-power Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round.

Mason steps up into the spotlight

By JARROD POTTER RETURNING to the Victoria Metro squad for another Under 20 campaign, Dandenong Rangers forward Mason Peatling is ready to step into the spotlight.

The new year starts with Australia’s apex junior basketball tournament and Peatling, 18, from Berwick, wants to make his presence felt the second time around.

While he was an emergency call-up who had limited court-time in 2015, Peatling knows there’s a lot more on his plate this time for Vic Metro and he’s keen for the opportunity.

“The expectation this year - I know I’m in the 10, I know I’m a much bigger part in our campaign this year than I did last year,” Peatling said.

“A lot more responsibility will be on me because of that and I’m looking forward to it and showing people what I’ve got.”

His looming departure for the American college system - after accepting a scholarship to Eastern Washington University - will put his Australian basketball journey on hiatus for the next few years and Peatling wants to finish this home-town chapter on a high note.

“For us it’s just about winning the national championship again.

“There’s six of us that are coming back this year and not a lot of teams have done that in the past,” Peatling said.

“For us it’s just about getting that back-to-back championship and for me personally I just want to play a bigger

“I’m not putting any numbers towards that, but I just want to make an impact.”

Peatling’s confidence in his skills was forged in breakout 2015. After last year’s tournament Peatling starred at the SEABL level, stepping up when Dandenong centre Chris Patton sustained a season-ending injury, and he puts it down to his experiences on and off the court as a Ranger.

“I suppose I’m probably a little less star-struck this year,” Peatling said.

“Last year I was a year younger than a lot of the guys who were going around and I was just making my way into that group.

“This year I’m well and truly in that group which is really good for me and after spending a year in SEABL it makes things a lot easier.

“Just adjusting to the speed - last year was a real step up for me to play state level basketball, but this year I think I’m a lot better equipped for it which is definitely a positive thing.”

Vic Metro heads into the tournament as reigning champion, earned in last year’s thrilling double-overtime 105-104 grand final win over Tasmania.

Peatling will pack up and leave for America in June, but until then will play with Dandenong’s SEABL men’s team.

The Basketball Australia Under 20 tournament runs 14-20 February.

Ballboy flags his ambitions

By JARROD POTTER LAST year he held the flags for the men’s final - this year Erick Chacon wants to be an even greater part of the Australian Open action.

Chacon, 15, originally from Endeavour Hills, has been selected as an Australian Open ballkid for a second year.

He developed his passion for the game at St Paul’s Apostle Tennis Club in Endeavour Hills and from there his love of the sport grew to encompass every aspect - not just playing but also being a part of the tennis community as a whole.

“Started in 2011 and I signed up for a local club - St Paul’s - was there for about three years and played competition then I decided because I was busy with school,” Chacon said.

“After I stopped playing I became a ballboy instead and this is my second year.”

He eventually had to give up playing to focus on his schoolwork, but his love of the sport transitioned into running after the balls and being an important part of the Open.

His highlights from his first run as a ballkid are cherished as he watched a number of greats and a few Australians take the court.

“Second year I’ve done it and my first match was (Grigor) Dimitrov and (Tomas) Berdych and I also was the ballkid for (Thanasi) Kokkinakis and (Sam) Groth,” Chacon said.

“I was the flagbearer for all of the finals,” Chacon said.

“The men’s final... even though I like watching the men’s game better - the crowd was going crazy because (Novak) Djokovic won his fourth so the crowd was pretty good.

“I want to be the ballkid in the men’s final this year and we have this award where if you’re the best ballkid you get to go to France to Roland Garros so that’s what I’d like to do.”

Outside of tennis, Chacon also loves soccer and hopes to take his striking skills to a school team in the future.

Lightning bolts past Dandy

By JARROD POTTER WNBL - ROUND 14 DANDENONG’S fortress was breached badly on Friday night in a 63-77 upset loss to Adelaide.

Rarely bested this season at their home court, the hosts were left scratching their heads after the Lightning surged in the bookend quarters.

Holding Dandenong to 11 in the first and a measly seven in the fourth - it was all systems go for Adelaide to take its sixth win of the season.

The first half belonged to the Lightning as the Dandenong defence fell apart under supreme pressure up and down the court.

Mikaela Dombkins (eight points) was let off the leash early, taking eight points in the first term.

Her opening quarter three-pointers set the stage as the Lightning struck a 19-11 first term gap and started to leave the Rangers in its wake.

Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson went to her tried and tested failsafe.

She brought perennial star defender Al Downie in quickly to stem the bleeding.

Downie had the unenviable task of sitting in the Lightning’s key and trying to curtail the likes of Mikaela Ruef (21 points, 14 rebounds) and Kayla Standish (nine points and 10 rebounds) taking shots and rebounds at will.

The battle outside was just as difficult for Dandenong as Leilani Mitchell (17 points) and and Kelly Bowen (11 points, 10 rebounds) proved just as tricky from around the perimeter.

The third problem facing the Rangers was the rapidly rising foul count.

Sara Blicavs and Annalise Pickrel immediately caught the referees’ attention and had to sit out lengthy, and extremely crucial, portions of the clash.

But as far as the rubber band stretched at times throughout the match - most of the time extending to 10 or 12 on the back of an Adelaide run-on - Dandenong didn’t let the match blow up.

Todhunter (eight points, five rebounds) nailed a buzzer-beating trey to bring the margin back to

five as a 25-point second term and 20-point third term had Dandenong in good stead - shooting the lights out at 51 per cent to stay in the clash.

Annalise Pickrel (17 points, four rebounds) fought out of foul trouble to bring the match back at times.

The Michigan State alumnus shot the threeball and attacked the ring to give Dandenong some semblance of hope heading into the decisive last term.

Tigers roar past Panthers in big-cat battle

By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET - ROUND 14 (Day 2) AGONISINGLY close to an upset, Dandenong (164) needed to cash just one more partnership to seal the deal against Monash Tigers (195 and 5/74).

With it’s Victorian Premier Cricket season allbut on the line Saturday, Dandenong had given itself the best chance of knocking over a huge scalp in Monash Tigers.

Monash brought back the big artillery for the second day against Dandenong – with Big Bash pair Cameron White and Dan Christian returning to wreak havoc with the ball.

The steady start from Brett Forsyth (44) and Tanner Stanton (11) came unstuck fast as Allan Wise (3/33) and the Tigers appealed long and hard to get Stanton out – before skittling Cam Forsyth (2) a few balls later.

Forsyth fell next – hitting out against Marcus Berryman (4/32) – before Matt Shimell (2/31) joined the party and in the space of 30 runs, the Panthers had shed the entire top order and went into lunch with shoulders slumped at 7/118.

That should’ve been the end of the story with Dandenong’s notoriously fragile tail this year, but another chapter was written by up-and-coming batsman Ed Newman (15), experienced Englishman David Alleyne (27no) and Kooweerup bowler Adam McMaster (23) down the order.

It was hard going – Berryman tried to bounce their heads off while Wise and Christian were using the gale-force winds to their advantage – but the lads dug deep.

Newman fell first – not before striking a gutsy 15 at only 16 years-old – before McMaster showed he’s a dab-hand late in the game.

Carrying on from his bowling last week, McMaster struck a couple of fours Dandy’s older statesmen would’ve been thrilled to hit.

His sensational late cut over backward point from a wide Berryman bouncer was shot of the day as McMaster toiled to keep the Panthers’ alive.

Chipping it around, edging the singles while crunching the occasional bad ball to the rope, the Alleyne-McMaster partnership pushed towards 50 before the worst of dismissals for McMaster.

His wicket began the end as Monash cleaned up the hosts in the 65th over.

Monash’s second knock was led by the bowling of McMaster (2/26) and Wilcock (2/14).

“They got on a bit of a roll,” Dandenong skipper Tom Donnell said. “Tanner was very unlucky to go out when the umpire was pressured a bit to give him out and that got their tails up and ran through us a bit until lunch.

“That was the hardest period for us – the first hour was really good, Brett and Tanner did well – but once we lost Tanner it sort of fell away a bit.

“Ed Newman had his first hit and got us back on track a little bit, then Adam had a great game – both weekends – and did really well, he’s only a

19 year old and is really important for our future.”

The loss leaves Dandenong well off the pace in 12th position.

With only three rounds left, will need wins aplenty and other results to go its way to make the top-eight. It starts this weekend away against Melbourne Uni. “That’s all that we can aim for – we have to win all three and if we drop one we probably can’t make it,” Donnell said.

“It’s really tight at the moment – there were games where we’ve been lucky, games we’ve been unlucky – and hopefully we can perform well… I think we can win them all and put a few good performances together.”

A five-point margin at the start of the term was cut by Cumming from the foul line, but whatever initiative the Rangers had mustered fell away after the five-minute mark of the quarter.

Tara Robinson (seven points) found time to sink the first nail into Dandenong’s coffin - as the Lightning pushed the gap back out to six points.

Dandenong could barely muster a shot-ontarget in the fourth as Adelaide ran away with the 14-point triumph as the experienced trio Ruef, Mitchell and Bowen sunk the match-winning baskets.

Anderson was bemused at Dandenong’s inability to get the rebounds - finishing on one of its lowest tallies of the season.

“I’m in a bit of shocked at the fact that we got absolutely flogged on the boards,” Anderson said.

“And that’s just purely an effort thing - credit to Adelaide they just got after it and played like they wanted it more which doesn’t make sense as I know my girls do.

“They just came in so flat and foul trouble killed us - having to rotate in different areas where we wouldn’t and a certain player would do well then she’d pick up another foul and there were foul troubles everywhere.”

“26-10 foul shots and that was the ball game - 26-47 on the rebounds and that’s a huge discrepancies that are a lot through effort.”

Dandenong continues its Australia Day longweekend on Monday night in what could potentially become an Australia Day Eve tradition against the Melbourne Boomers.

“I love it - i think it’s fantastic and every sport needs that rivalry,” Anderson said. “The Boomer and Ranger rivalry has been there as long as I’ve played and now coached - it’s always been there and for us we’ve got everything to play for on Monday.”

Springy South’s outright delight DDCA TURF 1 - ROUND 8 (Day 2) SPRINGVALE South surprised no one with a whopping 23-run outright-victory over Lyndale.

After dismissing the hosts for 84 last week, the Bloods quickly set the stage on Saturday with a sharp declaration at 5/195.

The rampage started early for Springvale South as Tim Ford (2/19) and Jarrod Armitage (1/19) seared through the Dales’ top order.

Malinga Bandara (4/10) - backing up his hattrick and six-wicket haul last week - claimed a rare 10-wicket bag in the local competition to put the Dales on the back foot.

Farazur Rahman (23) tried to hold back the tide, but in the end it was a 36-over display of pure carnage that had the Bloods claim outright win number three this season and take an eightpoint lead over Cranbourne atop the table.

Dandenong West (113) was no match for Heinz Southern Districts (184).

The best efforts of Sam Bracey (44) and Clay McCartney (32) paled in comparison to Michael Davies (7/31) barrage.

Going one better than his “drop-punt catch” in last year’s semi-final, Davies took chunks out of the Bulls’ attack to claim his second seven-for and eighth in weekend DDCA cricket and let the Cobras strike back and consolidate its spot in the top four heading towards finals.

Mordialloc (7/263) belted Buckley Ridges (179) to all points of Park Oval. Cameron Tomkinson (109) made the most of his first Turf 1 innings this season - smacking 19 boundaries and a six - en route to a century in tandem with Bloodhounds’ all-rounder Ian Daniel (70).

Their 147-run stand took the points and brings the Bloodhounds within four points of the topfour heading into the final three white-clothed matches of the season.

Parkfield (134) did it the hard way to clinch the local derby against North Dandenong (125 and 7/108).Wickets piled sky-high for the Bears, with only Joe Barrett (45) and Nilochana Perera (39) mounting a serious fight-back.

She is driven to succeed

By JARROD POTTER INSIDE a Mitsubishi would be the last place to expect to see a pair of WPL Gold Medals hanging.

It’s an odd spot for most to put their accolades but for Tiffany Eliadis it’s a great reminder of what she’s done and where she still wants to go with her soccer as she drives to her matches or training sessions.

After back-to-back Women’s Premier League titles with South Melbourne, Eliadis, 20, from Endeavour Hills, will change course on her career after she joined the newly formed Southern United.

While it’s tough to farewell her adopted club after many fruitful seasons, Eliadis felt the time was right to take on another big test - the Women’s National Premier League.

“I just wanted a new challenge, to be honest,” Eliadis said.

“Staying at South would’ve been the easy option but seeing that the WNPL would be something completely different for women’s football I thought why not be a part of it.

“I always like to challenge myself with new things and it’s a club that’s trying to slowly build itself up and before I went to South, they were a bit like that too.

“Going to Southern is a little like that and I feel that they’ll boost themselves up and I want to be a part of it, to be honest, on the southeast side.”

Joining Southern United alongside SMFC team-mate Saphri Lines and reuniting with her former Row-

ville Sports Academy coach Stuart Munro – Eliadis thinks Southern is set to up the ante with fast-paced, attacking style.

“It will definitely be a passing game – won’t be a boot it long and chase kind of thing,” Eliadis said.

“The girls will get into the routine of passing and relaxing on the ball and making better decisions – I think that’s what Stuart is trying to implement as well – better decision making and quicker speed of play.”

Eliadis encouraged all southeastern soccer girls to head along and try out for Southern United ahead of the inaugural WNPL season.

While it’s a daunting prospect to jump up to the top tier in Victoria, Eliadis had the same concerns when she was younger but thought her switch to South Melbourne was the greatest move she ever made.

“Take a chance – you won’t know unless you try and you’ve got to take risks to be better,” Eliadis said. “When I was younger I took a risk as a 14-year-old to go play in senior level and it was the best thing I probably ever did.

“I even spoke to a few who were trying out for the 18s and told them to come into the seniors and they said that it’s obviously a major difference but you’d only get better if you push yourself.”

In the meantime she’ll tick off the kilometres in her purple Mirage waiting for the season to start next month – with her medals as a solid reminder of her capabilities.

Dandy academy helps in Rays-ing youth girls standards

By JARROD POTTER MAKING the next cut in pursuit of a Victorian jersey are 29 players from the Dandenong Stingrays Youth Girls Academy (YGA).

Out of hundreds to try out for the Big V, the Stingrays crew were part of the final 130 hoping to gain selection for the national championships.

Dandenong’s All Australian schoolgirls pair Courtney Jones (Cranbourne) and Emily Browning (Lyndhurst) were snatched up quickly by Vic Metro scouts ahead of this year’s AFL National Youth Girls Championships – which will finally return home and be held in Melbourne from 2 to 5 May. Familiar local faces in

Beaconsfield quartet Georgia Gee, Tyla Hanks, Ruby Clayton and Brooke Struylaart are in the 65-woman Vic Metro squad alongside former Vic Metro pair Logan O’ConnellWebb (Lyndhurst) and Georgia Gourlay (Cranbourne).

As well as the 19 selected in the Vic Metro preliminary squad, another 10 have a chance to be coached at the state level by their YGA coach Scott Gowans, who was announced as Vic Country head coach earlier this week.

Screening days for both squads will be held in the lead up to the National Championships, with Vic Country to hold their event on Sunday 7 February at North Melbourne Football Club, and Vic Metro to be held at Richmond Football Club on 4 March.

Like many late arrivals, it’s the best looker at the party.

Bluetooth, rear view camera and reversing sensors, keyless entry and start, cruise control, LED fog lamps and headlights, sat-nav, heads-up display, power everything, auto wipers and headlights, leather trim, (tiddly) sunroof and comprehensive safety package.

There’s just one option (the safety package is optional in lower trims), the evergreen bargain that is the $200 Soul Red metallic paint.

Mazda CX-3 hasn’t got a single bad angle to it, especially in this Akari trim with big alloys and plenty of body-coloured exterior parts.

It’s lithe and athletic-looking, with a good mix of Mazda’s key

design elements while managing to shrink the CX-5 without it looking desperate.

Light on the bling and with few unpainted body bits, it also avoids the mini-SUV cliche of trying to look big ‘n’ chunky. There’s a decent palette of colours, our car coming in the unexpectedly cool ceramic, a colour that changed very subtly with the light and looked like egg shells.

Inside is contemporary Mazda, which means clean design and good ergonomics, with a Peugeot-like flair for mixing textures to keep things interesting.

There’s also a Peugeot-like knack for providing an irritating

dashboard, in this case Mazda’s central-dial-with-wings that infuriates some in the ‘2 and ‘3 - too-small instruments packed into a big space.

Accommodation is adequate if not expansive, with head and shoulder room lacking a little in the rear, but kids will be perfectly happy.

Rear kneeroom is good while there’s enough space to shuffle your feet under the front seat. Sadly, there are no air-con vents back here, which might mean some sweaty times aft.

The boot, too is adequate with a small hatch-like 264 litres (it betters the Mazda 2 by just 8 litres), expanding to 1174 when the seats are dropped.

It has a nifty false floor under which you can sling laptops, tablets and whatever else you want to hide that roughly will fit in a depth of around 10 cm.

The front seats are very comfortable but unfortunately the lack of armrest - a problem shared with its rival Renault Captur, for instance makes for a less than appealing long distance proposition.

Overall the cabin is light-on for storage. There are only two cupholders for the front and none in the rear, without even an armrest to balance drinks on - though that might be just as well‌

THE Mazda CX-3 may have been beaten to the market by Nissan, Renault, Honda and Holden, but its late arrival doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem to have done it any harm.

The mini-SUV joins a Mazda line-up of cars that is handing out bloody noses to its rivals using a combination of looks, pricing and specification.

The CX-3 fits right in with the rest of the range while hopefully bringing with it the CX-5â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s superior dynamics in a smaller package.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a slightly bewildering array of CX-3s, powered by either a 2.0-litre SkyActiv petrol or a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel.

You can have a bare-ish bones manual front-wheel drive Neo for $19,990 or blow almost double that on an all-wheel drive Akari automatic.

The big seller is the Maxx AWD at around $27,000, give or take a few bucks depending on transmission.

We landed ourselves the toplevel Akari.

This trim level is available with both engines, manual (petrol only) or auto and either driving the front or all the wheels.

Sporty, solid and sharp

By EWAN KENNEDY OUR test Volkswagen Passat midsized sedan and wagon 132TSI station wagon in Comfortline format had the $3500 Luxury Package with a huge panoramic sunroof, LED headlights and daytime running lights, ambient interior lighting and folding door mirrors.

Volkswagen Passat has a modest, timeless look of the sort that has appealed to VW owners for generations.

The slim full-width three-bar grille stretches all the way to the headlights.

There’s plenty of shiny surfaces on the grille and the large central badge leaves people in no doubt that they’re driving a VW. The interior has a sporting look to the instrument binnacle and an air vent that stretches across the full width of the dash makes a real styling statement.

The code ‘TSI’ in VW-speak indicates a turbo-petrol unit.

The ‘132’ means it produces up to 132 kW of power from its 1.8 litres.

It’s a significantly upgraded version of the previous 118TSI unit.

Top torque remains at 250 Nm as in the old engine but now comes in 250 rpm lower than before, being on tap from an impressively low 1250 rpm.

A turbo-diesel Passat 140TDI, with torque of 400 Nm, is also offered.

This is not the EA189 unit which is the subject of the emissions cheating scandal, rather, it’s the newer EA288 unit, that we are assured complies with Euro 6 standards at

all times.

Both engines are mated to DSG dual-clutch transmissions, sevenspeed with the 132TSI and sixspeed with the 140TDI. All Passats have App-Connect USB interface (Apple and Android); satellite navigation; and Bluetooth connectivity.

The 132TSI uses the Discover Media system and displays on a 6.5inch colour touch, the Discover Pro in the Customline and Highline has additional features on an 8.0-inch screen.

The latest Passat safety features include nine airbags, enhanced ABS braking with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist and auto hold, ESP with traction control, rear view camera with multi-angle views and IsoFix child seat anchors on the outer rear seats.

Standard in the Comfortline and Highline models, (an $1800 option in the Driver Assistant Package in the 132TSI) are Adaptive Cruise Control with stop/start, Front Assist with City Emergency Braking, Lane Assist, Side Assist, and Rear Traffic Alert.

Engine performance is very good and turbo lag has been kept to a reasonable level.

There’s the usual VW DSG slowresponse at very slow speeds, something that we thought would have been sorted out after all these years.

Fuel consumption is impressively low for a big petrol unit at about five to six litres per 100 kilometres in motorway cruising. This climbs to seven to 10 litres around town.

the installation of a full-size spare wheel, but we’ve seen worse.

Passat’s seats are well-shaped and supportive and their height makes them easy to get in and out of. The solid feeling that has been a traditional in Volkswagens for decades remains.

Indeed, the B8 Passat series has taken it one step further. You really do feel isolated from everything the road is throwing at the car.

Similarly, noise reduction has been also been enhanced and you get the sort of interior sound levels that would once have demanded a $100,000+ German car.

Handling is reasonably sharp, though aimed more at driving comfort than at sports wagon lovers.

There’s neutral cornering behaviour at normal speeds, changing to safe understeer when pushing hard.

Volkswagen Passat’s station wagon is big, practical and offers excellent driving comfort.
