School cost’s record hit

By ALANA MITCHELSON A record number of Geelong families are struggling to meet school costs this year, according to support services.

UnitingCare said it would help 400 Geelong children with school essentials but 30 families remained on its waiting list.

An Australian Scholarship Group report has idenfified Victoria as the most expensive state for education.

Victorian costs are 12 per cent above the national average, with regional families paying on average $53,200 for primary and secondary public schooling.

Demand in Geelong began rising to record levels after the Federal Government cut $271 million from social service grants, welfare agencies said.

Tens of thousands of local children will begin returning to school next week as many families struggle to balance Christmas and holiday spending against the financial demands of the new year. The closure of Ford’s Geelong manufacturing operations later this year and global economic uncertainty are set to add further pressure on some local family budgets in 2016.

Newcomb mother Janet, who wanted her surname unpublished to prevent identification of her children, said she had to rely on UnitingCare Geelong so her 15-year-old daughter had the required books, stationery and school uniform.

Unable to work after three cancer diagnoses in recent years, Janet said the support “made the world of difference”.

She first accessed assistance for a son in senior high school. He went on to achieve a 90-plus ATAR score and enrol at university.

Relief plea for park pain

By ALANA MITCHELSON Car parking problems for cancer patients are under review after a Barwon Health submission to City Hall.

The submission proposed parking fine exemptions for patients whose appointments went overtime and exceeded two hours, Barwon Health told the Geelong Indy.

Staff would apply for the exemptions on behalf of patients.

Parking around Geelong’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre was an “ongoing issue” for patients, staff and visitors, Barwon Health said.

The proposal follows a Cancer Council Victoria study that found parking issues were “adding

burden to cancer patients” around the state. The Andrew Love centre participated in the study.

Cancer After Care Group Geelong president Libby Bate said she sometimes circled the block twice looking for a park when visiting the centre.

“Some days it’s terrible,“ Ms Bate said.

“The worst aspect is you often don’t know how long you’re going to be. An hour can turn out much longer because of a hold-up.

“I’d hate to think how difficult it would be for patients. Often there might be 20 days of treatment, with patients coming in five days a week.”

Ms Bate said nearby metred parking was also confusing.

“There are some two-hour spots that suddenly change to one hour only and there are four-hour

A Barwon Health spokesperson said finding parks could be an additional worry for patients and loved ones.

Acting mayor Bruce Harwood said council was considering Barwon Health’s proposal.

“Council is working closely with Barwon Health to identify a means for clients attending the renal unit and Andrew Love to access parking in exceptional circumstances without the risk of receiving an infringement notice,” he said.

Surf Coasters ‘prepared to dob in their own children’ Almost everyone on the Surf Coast would dob in even their own child if they were a suspected arsonist, according to a “world-first” study.

Saving lives, including livestock and pets, from fires was more important than relationships for 93 per cent of respondents, the study found.

Crime Stoppers revealed the findings at Anakie yesterday as part of a regional Victorian roadshow to encourage reporting of “arson-related activities”.

The study surveyed residents of the Surf Coast and six other communities in bushfire-prone areas.

Surfer slashed A Torquay surfer in his fifties went home with a “serious” leg injury several hours before he was taken to hospital, according to ambulance Victoria.

He suffered the injury in the afternoon before his “condition deteriorated” and he was taken to hospital in a stable condition around 10.44pm, the ambulance service said.

Biker in footpath hit-run

By EMILY ROBINSON A dirt-bike rider allegedly ran down a 65-year-old man on a Norlane footpath late Wednesday night, police said yesterday.

The hit-run put the victim in hospital with fractured ribs and extensive grazing, Leading Senior Constable Shane Dignan said.

Police received reports of two dirt bikes “hooning in the Norlane area” before the 11.30pm incident, he said.

Ld Sen Const Dignan believed the bikes were travelling along Waitara Grove near Alkira Avenue before hitting the man.

“One of these dirt bikes left the road, crossed the naturestrip and struck the pedestrian.

“It’s a hit-and-run - they’ve just taken off.”

A resident across the road called triple-zero (000) after the incident, Ld Sen Const Dignan said.

“We’ve been up there this morning and conducted a door-knock and have received a positive response from some neighbours.”

Police spoke with the victim yesterday morning.

“He didn’t see if the bikes were registered or not,” Ld Sen Const Dignan said.

“This man was hit by what we believe is a large motorbike, it could have been a lot worse.

“We need witnesses. If people heard or saw the bikes on Wednesday night, please give us a call.”

Illegal motorbike-riding was a “big problem” in Geelong, Ld Sen Const Dignan said.

The riders were young people “most of the time”, Ld Sen Const Dignan said.

“They wear helmets but I think that’s so we can’t recognise them.”

Ld Sen Const Dignan said the illegal riders could be difficult to aprehend.

“We actively enforce it. We have our own dirt-bikes and they’re out

there all the time.

“But they know all the shortcuts, they go onto footpaths and into reserves and places where police cars can’t go.”

12 to four wards ‘preferred option’ Geelong’s council could be slashed from 12 wards to four under options put out for public comment.

Four options for fewer but larger wards and one less councillor were released this week for the Victorian Electoral Commission’s (VEC) “electoral representation review”.

State law requires the VEC to reduce Geelong’s non-mayoral councillors from 12 to 11, which means a reduction of at least one ward.

The VEC said the “preferred” option A was for a trio of three-councillor wards and one twocouncillor ward.

“Alternative” option D was the closest to the existing arrangement, with 11 single-councillor wards.

“The review has considered a range of information, including preliminary public submissions, to form its options for an electoral structure that will provide fair and equitable representation for all voters in the municipality,” the VEC said.

“Anyone interested in the future electoral structure of the council can make a public submission in response to the preliminary report.”

The VEC said the report was available at City Hall or vec.vic.gov.au Submissions could be lodged online at the same address, emailed to greatergeelongreview@ vec.vic.gov.au, faxed to 9629 8632 or posted to VEC, Level one, 530 Collins St, Melbourne, 3000, by 17 February.

Those submitting could request to address a public hearing at City Hall on 24 February, the VEC said.

“If there are no requests to speak the hearing will not be held.”

A final report containing the VEC’s recommendation to the Minister for Local Government is scheduled for release on Wednesday 16 March.

State trains vow ‘mystifies’ PTUA

Watching five-year-old son Jett prepare to start school next week was similar to the experience of most mums for Clifton Springs’s Samara Bondin.

But the big milestone will have special meaning for the Bondin family which relies on hearing aids for Jett’s education at St Thomas Aquinas School.

Jett was diagnosed with hearing loss and fitted with his first hearing aids soon after birth. The family relied on not-for-profit service Australian Hearing to help Jett’s adaptation to the devices.

Ms Bondin was thrilled to see him now ready and capable of starting school.

“Jett’s well and truly ready for kindy. He can’t wait for this next step. He’s most looking forward to wearing his hat and he can’t wait to learn lots in class and play with his new friends.”

Australian Hearing audiologist Marnie Halloran, who watched Jett’s development, said the aids assisted him immensely.

“Jett’s confident using his hearing aids and using them has helped with his speech and language development,” Ms Halloran said.

Jett tried on his new school uniform at a special Australian Hearing event in Geelong to celebrate his achievements.

Australian Hearing Geelong manager Rosslyn Jablonsky was pleased Jett could begin school with comparable language skills to other kids.

“The early years are critical so beginning intervention as soon as possible after the diagnosis of a hearing loss minimises any delay in a child’s language development,” she said.

Shadow transport minister David Hodgett said the Geelong line was particularly badly affected.

“Geelong residents face numerous delays if road coaches continue to take the place of faster trains. This will be exacerbated once Australia Day has been and gone and most Victorians are back to work or school,” Mr Hodgett said.

The State Government’s assurance that V/Line train services will be back to normal within a week has “mystified” a leading Geelong public transport activist.

The promise was “fairly opaque”, said Public Transport Users Association Geelong’s Paul Westcott “It’s hard to believe train services could be back to normal that soon given the extent of the disruptions. It’s been disastrous,” Mr Westcott said.

“We still don’t really have an understanding of the reasons for the wear and how it got so bad so quickly.”

V/Line passengers will travel free until the end of the month, the government announced this week. Advance-payers will be compensated with the equivalent of nine extra days of travel.

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan has ordered an independent operational review into V/Line.

The review will consider the structure, capability and expertise of the regional operator, she said.

Ms Allan attributed the disruptions to train services to wheels wearing on the new tracks and signalling problems at boom gates on regional lines.

The Andrews Government also committed $23 million for the installation of axle counters to trigger boom gates, she said.

“V/Line did not adequately plan and prepare a changed maintenance regime for more frequent services running along regional rail services after the new timetable came into operation mid last year,” Ms Allan said.

“I am advised that these issues are being addressed through additional maintenance and the

Hundreds of new jobs for Geelong Hundreds of new jobs will flow to Geelong when Department of Human Services (DHS) relocates to a new headquarters in the city, according to a federal MP. The DHS’s co-tenancy of a new building with the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) would be a “great boost for our city”, said Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson.

“This presents so many opportunities for our city through construction of a state-of-the-art office; a landmark building housing 450 NDIA staff and contractors and up to 400 DHS staff,” she said.

“The headquarters will also deliver several hundred jobs during construction.”

The DHS already has staff in other Geelong offices but would have to reassign more positions from other cities to house 400 employees in the new premises.

The building would stamp Geelong as a “centre of excellence in government administration”, Ms Henderson said.

“There are so many additional benefits for Geelong in terms of indirect employment for organisations working with and servicing the NDIA and DHS. “The location of hundreds of employees in the Geelong CBD will have a multiplier effect on jobs, growth and investment.”

The DHS move to Geelong was confirmed this week when the NDIA announced it would revise its initial building tender, released late last year, to make room for the new tenant.

NDIA chief David Bowen said the co-location of the agencies represented “whole-of-government efforts to achieve optimal property management outcomes”.

The revised tender sought 12,700 square metres of office space as well as additional car-parking and common areas.

The inclusion of DHS staff in the new building could send existing proposals for the NDIA headquarters back to the drawing board.

Then in early December the hotel’s three operators made the ultimate decision to close their venue.

The art-deco pub traded for the last time on 2 January, the same day it celebrated 11 years of management, with a goodbye party.

Built in 1849 as the Union Club, the building was renovated and reopened as the Carlton in 1937.

The closure was “due to a combination of factors”, said a spokesperson for the pub’s operators, which leased the building from “Melbourne interests”.

“There’s no blame attributed to any one of them. At the end of the day when you’re in business you have to make adjustments and we did a lot of that along the way,” the spokesperson said.

“With the lease expiring during the tail end of the 11-year period, there was no security of tenure moving forward and no incentive to reinvest into the business.”

The closure was partly due to reduced trade from a proposed $120 million redevelopment of the pub to house National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) staff and other office workers, the spokesperson said.

“There was a strong perception in the marketplace that we’d already closed.”

The spokesperson counted the Carlton released separate concept plans for the NDIA last year before the DHS announcement.

School costs hit new high mark

Boating industry backs $5.2b ‘marina lifestyle’ A $5.2 BILLION marina-style residential estate could be a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for Geelong’s economy, according to a boating industry leader.

The proposed 4000-berth Nelson Cove promised to help make Geelong a “magnet city” for boatowners, said Boating Industry Association of Victoria’s Steven Potts.

He was speaking at a Geelong boating and tourism forum this week, where industry figures called for State Government to establish a “Blue Infrastructure Fund”.

The fund would help provide boating infrastructure to encourage private investment in projects like Nelson Cover, earmarked for disused salt pans at Moolap.

“The proposed Nelson Cove marina residential lifestyle and sporting precinct is forecast by Mac-

roplanDimasi, one of Australia’s leading property economists, to add $20 billion of economic activity over 19 years to Geelong,” Mr Potts said.

“This should be recognised as a major generational once in a lifetime opportunity to boost the Geelong economy, create a major boating tourism destination facility and, more importantly, thousands of jobs over the lifetime of the project and beyond.“ The forum heard that boating would double in the central coastal area of Victoria over the next 35 years.

Mr Potts said 95 per cent of Victoria’s 172,000 registered recreational vessels were “trailered”, with a 2015 Roy Morgan poll finding that 86 per cent of their owners planned a trip to the Geelong region in 2015.

Roger Grant said tourism/lifestyle developments based around waterfront locations were “always popular”.

Greater co-ordination of tourism and boating activities such as fishing, water skiing, sailing and scuba diving, could “maximise employment and investment opportunities”, he said.

“Major tourism lifestyle development with waterfront locations are always popular and boating activities through local clubs such as the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, who organise the Festival of Sails which attracts thousands of visitors to Geelong.“ The tourism body and industry association plan “regular discussions on relevant issues to boost investment in boating related tourism“.

“As the kids progress up the grades, books become more and more expensive. Books alone can be up to $600 because it can cost $80 per book.

“Years ago there wasn’t that kind of pressure on families.

“School costs have risen significantly in the last few years. My first child was in high school about 18 years ago and fees have doubled, easily.

“There’s a standard fee as well as a cost per subject and, depending on what the kids are interested in, it can cost $150 per subject.

“And this is the public system.”

UnitingCare Geelong chief Des Younghusband said “school-ready” expenses were increasingly beyond the reach of low-income families.

“We see a lot of families really struggle with the cost of shoes, uniforms, books and stationery. Parents can spend over $1500 just on school books,” Mr Younghusband said.

“A lot of people say the cost of living is having a real impact on their budget. From rent to utility bills and transport, families are being stretched to the limit.

“We’ve noticed a spike in the number of people calling us for help already this year.”

A 2015 Auditor-General’s report said some parents were paying schools for items that should be free, such as head lice checks, first-aid nurses and grounds maintenance.

Victorian Council of Social Services chief Emma King said many parents were in a “great deal of confusion” about school charges.

“There’s also limited information about the resources available to support families with the costs of education,” she said.

Study will probe ‘fat talk’ effect GEELONG women’s ‘fat talk’ could help provide insights into body-image issues, according to Deakin University.

One of its researchers wants to find out how comments like, ‘My thighs are huge’, or, ‘I hate my calves’, feed women’s problems with their appearance.

“Women’s body image is a widespread issue within our society and is associated with a range of negative health consequences, ranging from body dissatisfaction to disordered eating,” said Deakin psychology associate lecturer Jacqueline Mills.

“Fat talk, or speaking about our bodies in a negative way, is not as harmless as it may appear.

“Although you might think talking about the parts of your body that are getting you down would help you to feel better, fat talk has been shown to actually increase body dissatisfaction levels.

“Engaging in fat talk has also been linked with greater acceptance of the thin ideal promoted by the media as well as comparing your appearance with how other people look.”

Ms Mills said the apparent “contagious element” of fat talk was a particular concern.

“Hearing someone speak negatively about their body, or even that of another person, can greatly increase the chances of you engaging in fat talk yourself.

“Ultimately, fat talk can help reinforce the idea that women should be largely valued by the way they look, leading to women obsessing over their appearance, which just starts the whole cycle again.”

Ms Mills called for women aged 18 to 40 years to take part in her study.

Participants would undertake an online survey and a week of daily “mini-surveys” via a smartphone app, she said.

“The app will measure moment-to-moment fluctuations in women’s body image experience across multiple days. This will give us a comprehensive view of women’s experiences with fat talk in their regular social interactions.

“Understanding context in which fat talk occurs will be useful in developing effective preventative measures, as well as intervention models, to deal with body dissatisfaction.”

Ms Mills said women could nominate for the study by emailing fat.talk.research@gmail.com.

An ‘internationally recognised’ arts figure will take over Geelong Gallery from long-time director Geoffrey Edwards, its board has announced.

Jason Smith will start work on 1 May after 25 years in the art museum sector, the gallery’s board said.

“His appointment builds on Geelong Gallery’s commitment as Australia’s foremost regional gallery to presenting exhibitions of vision and national significance.”

Mr Smith will arrive in Geelong from a position as curatorial manager of Australian art at Queensland Gallery of Modern Art. He was director and chief executive officer of Heide Museum of Modern Art from 2008 to 2014 when he led a reinvigoration of its programming and artistic direction.

Previously he was Monash Gallery of Art director from 2007 to 2008 and a curator National Gallery of Victoria from 1997 to 2007.

Mr Smith has curated over 40 exhibitions and written on the work of more than 150 artists for a range of publications.

Geelong Gallery chair Terry Wills Cooke said the board was delighted with Mr Smith’s appointment.

“He brings to the community of Geelong a reputation for excellence in gallery and museum management and innovative artistic direction.

More councils, more problems for Geelong

ONE FOR ALL: One City Hall is enough for Geelong, according to a former mayor. mayors, over 70 councillors, six CEOs and 40-plus directors would be a step backward for residential development alone.

Today’s council would be far more successful if political hats were left outside council chambers.

Council has become a big business and, as board members, councillors should behave professionally, this possibly requiring some to step back so they can reflect on their oath of office.

Achieving this would be a step forward and solve a lot of the problems.

Shire’s ‘recycling’ rubbish

Marketing levy illegal

As a ratepayer with two businesses in the area, I contacted Surf Coast Shire last summer about inadequate street-bin capacity at Torquay, Lorne, Anglesea and Airey’s Inlet.

The shire then put plastic wheelie bins next to the public bins.

However, people still tried putting rubbish in the original bins and the overflow was taken by birds or blown away.

Now Anglesea’s recycling bins are emptied into the same truck as rubbish.

A shire contractor said he would “get a written warning” if he took the recycle-bin contents to the recycling facility in Geelong.

I spoke to the facility manager who explained it had a shed full of material from South Australian councils that paid for it to be processed but was not processing Surf Coast recycling.

The manager indicated the Surf Coast bins had problems with dog poo bags inside.

I understood this to mean the Surf Coast recycling would have been processed if the contractors had negotiated agreements similar to those of the South Australian councils.

The shire’s people stopped communicating with me so I spoke to Sustainability Victoria which rang back to tell me the shire had said it was doing everything correctly.

The shire should take the recycle stickers and lids off its so-called recycling bins to double the capacity for safe, secure rubbish disposal.

Also, visitors and locals would then know their waste went where they expected when they used a public bin.

Having taken an interest in the central Geelong traders’ marketing levy controversy, it was interesting to hear from a friend with years of law experience that no commercial entity can force the purchase of its goods and services onto another.

This seems to be exactly what council is attempting with the levy.

Some traders are aware council has no legal right to enforce the levy and intend to refuse to pay.

Council seems out of order on this issue and I have heard of calls for a class action should it persist in trying to force this tax on traders.

A levy is a short-term thing but council’s has been an ongoing, serious impost over a decade or more on the profitability of traders whose main aim is mainly to survive if not actually make a profit.

Council should facilitate the success of all traders, not treat them like a cash cow to be plundered for every cent that can be extracted.

Is there no respect for people who actually employ other people?

Cops put back on beat With the deployment of some of the state’s first police custody officers to Geelong Police Station (Geelong Indy, 15 January), the Andrews Government has ensured that more police are freed up and back on the beat keeping locals safe.

The specialised custody officers are responsible for the care and management of prisoners at police stations and under police guard, reducing the burden on police.

The government has committed to funding 400 custody officers as well as additional police personnel to keep Victorians safe.

Overcrowding in the cells at Geelong Police Station was placing additional strain on alreadybusy officers.

A number of epidemics are affecting the community, including ice-fuelled crime and the scourge of family violence.

The delivery of the custody officers is another election commitment delivered by the Labor Government and an investment keeping Geelong safe with more police on our streets.

I wish our new custody officers all the best in their role.

Can’t see the light I recently defended myself in Geelong Magistrates’ Court against a summons for driving through a red light at the intersection of Latrobe Terrace and Fyans Street at 5.30pm on 22 May 2015, when it was dark.

The prosecutor told the magistrate the fine of $396 had been waived but the three demerit points stood.

I told the magistrate that, as a matter of principle, I did not want the fine abolished.

I said I had been licenced for 67 years without ever being questioned or charged with an offence.

I handed police camera photos to the magistrate who said the images were “very, very, very obscure” and asked whether the “tiny red light” above the keep-left sign carried a green arrow pointing west. I replied in the affirmative.

I told him the camera was approximately 50 metres from the light and not powerful enough to pick up the green arrow for turning right traffic into Fyans Street.

The magistrate said I had to prove the camera was at fault, which would entail obtaining expert evidence at a lot of cost, perhaps without a result.

I decided to accept the demerit points because the matter would still be in abeyance.

Last year the intersection collected $850,000 in fines.

Then something might be done to show the green arrows clearly and perhaps fines might be refunded.

A 15 January letter called for a return to multiple councils in Geelong, with mayors, councillors and office staff operating under “the previous system”.

This system operated with each of six councils having administrative staff, a mayor and nine or more councillors.

Since amalgamation residential growth, for example, has been rapid and the single council has worked closely with developers to get the best infrastructure built.

Previously developers subdivided, sold and left, leaving councils to build community facilities and complete infrastructure - think of Clifton Springs and Collendina as examples.

Roads, footpaths, overhanging trees and rubbish collection are still high priorities but a mayor or a councillor cannot now be expected to drop by to view a pothole.

As a former councillor, mayor and chairman of commissioners during the amalgamation period, I saw numerous examples of waste, duplication of services and frustration as the various councils tried to unite with one voice for Geelong. Developers came and left, leaving few community assets behind.

Country set to rock city

By ALANA MITCHELSON COUNTRY rocker Bill Gray has just released his first CD of original material and has a suitcase of hundreds of songs he’s been writing since his teens up his sleeve.

After contesting in the competitive Champion of Champions 2013 in South Australia, Gray was awarded the Rocky Page Memorial Scholarship.

He spent two weeks at the Academy of Country Music in Tamworth, NSW, being mentored by some of the biggest names in Australian country music. He even got the chance to meet one of his greatest role models in music, Kasey Chambers.

“I’ll always remember the advice Kasey gave me over lunch one day,“ Gray recalled.

“She said ‘the squeaky wheel gets the most oil’.

You have to pester people to play shows and the ones that do well are the ones who don’t take no for an answer and don’t give up.“ Another piece of advice he has always valued was that “success in the music industry is about 30 per cent singing and the rest is how hard you try”.

“In the music industry you see a lot of people plateau and bail out of the circuit. You might drive a long way and not sell any CDs and it would be much easier to stay home and get a job at the local supermarket,” he said.

“A lot of people will try to talk you out of it and you just have to block out everything that’s negative and hold onto the idea in your head of what you want to achieve.”

Gray’s dedication to music is such that he played more than 250 shows in 2013 alone. Now with a compilation of original releases under his belt, Gray hopes to tour larger festivals over the next two years to build wider recognition for his unique material.

At the Motor City Music Festival, he will play a mixture of originals and covers to test the waters.

“When I chose the songs to put on my first CD, I picked what I believed were the best,” he said.

COUNTRY BOY: Bill Gray will play Geelong’s Motor City Music Festival.

“I’m confident that my originals will be really well received in amongst the Johnny Cash and Alan Jackson covers. I think I’ve got some really good material.”

In the months ahead, Gray will release his first single and later the music video to his song The Car.

While his focus in 2016 will be largely on festival tours, Gray hopes to begin writing songs for other musicians or approaching them with material from his song archives.

Motor City Music Festival is at the Geelong Showgrounds between 11 to 3 March.

By ALANA MITCHELSON ROY Orbison tribute band The Big O and Friends is currently recording their first single, Blue Rain, bringing to life 25 years worth of tours across Australia celebrating the American singer/songwriter’s musical contribution.

Frontman John Wells explained that while his music sounds simple, it’s actually quite involved.

“Roy Orbison’s songwriting is just amazing and it’s quite varied. He never wrote the same type of song twice,“ he said.

“Our show is a tribute to the music. It’s by no means an impersonation. We play the songs pretty authentically but there’s a current edge to it.“ Mr Wells performs alongside eight-piece band

GEELONG’S Rippleside Park will again celebrate Australia Day with free activities and entertainment for children and families.

The day will begin 11am before a flag-raising and opening address ceremony at 1pm and the conclusion of activities at 4pm.

Geelong Australia Day Committee has delivered the event for over 50 years, with Lions Club of Geelong-Corio Bay managing the day with the support of many community groups, volunteers and local businesses.

With City of Greater Geelong sponsoring the event, organisers expect 7000 patrons over the course of the day.

The free on-stage entertainment will include Geelong’s own, Dazzling Dan The Magic Man along with Willow Star entertainers, Scottish dancers, Geelong Memorial Brass Band and much more.

Children will also enjoy face-painting, giant slide rides, jumping castles, an animal nursery and rides on ponies and miniature trains and fire engine.

Scouts and Girl Guides will attend, while CFA, SES and vehicle displays will interest adults.

Beretta’s Bike Studio has been asked to provide mechanic support to the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road race this month.

“This year we have been asked to assist in the elite races too,” Paul says.

“We make sure we keep riders going if they break down.”

Even Mark Cavendish’s bike is currently at Beretta’s Bike Studio for a check-over before the elite race.

“Most of our business comes by referral and other cyclists; Mark was referred to our store by the race organisers,” Paul says.

By PETER ANDERSON The Mazda CX-3 might have been beaten to the market by Nissan, Renault, Honda and Holden, but its late arrival doesn’t seem to have done it any harm at all.

The mini-SUV joins a Mazda line-up of cars that is handing out bloody noses to its rivals using a combination of looks, pricing and specification.

The CX-3 fits right in with the rest of the range while hopefully bringing with it the CX-5’s superior dynamics in a smaller package.

There’s a slightly bewildering array of CX-3s, powered by either a 2.0-litre SkyActiv petrol or a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel.

You can have a bare-ish bones manual frontwheel drive Neo for $19,990 or blow almost double that on an all-wheel drive Akari automatic.

The big seller is the Maxx AWD at around $27,000, give or take a few bucks depending on transmission.

We landed ourselves the top-level Akari.

This trim level is available with both engines, manual (petrol only) or auto and either driving the front or all the wheels.

Our auto Akari front-wheel drive petrol weighed in at $33,290.

This includes 18-inch alloys, a six-speaker stereo with USB and Bluetooth, rear view camera and reversing sensors, keyless entry and start, cruise control, LED fog lamps and headlights, sat-nav, heads-up display, power everything, auto wipers and headlights, leather trim, (tiddly) sunroof and comprehensive safety package.

There’s just one option (the safety package is optional in lower trims), the evergreen bargain that is the $200 Soul Red metallic paint.

Mazda CX-3 hasn’t got a single bad angle to it, especially in this Akari trim with big alloys and plenty of body-coloured exterior parts.

It’s lithe and athletic-looking, with a good mix of Mazda’s key design elements while managing to shrink the CX-5 without it looking desperate.

Light on the bling and with few unpainted body bits, it also avoids the mini-SUV cliche of trying to look big ‘n’ chunky. There’s a decent palette of colours, our car coming in the unexpected-

ly cool ceramic, a colour that changed very subtly with the light and looked like egg shells.

Inside is contemporary Mazda, which means clean design and good ergonomics, with a Peugeot-like flair for mixing textures to keep things interesting.

There’s also a Peugeot-like knack for providing an irritating dashboard, in this case Mazda’s central-dial-with-wings that infuriates some in the ‘2 and ‘3 - too-small instruments packed into a big space.

Accommodation is adequate if not expansive, with head and shoulder room lacking a little in the rear, but kids will be perfectly happy.

Rear kneeroom is good while there’s enough space to shuffle your feet under the front seat.

Sadly, there are no air-con vents back here, which might mean some sweaty times aft.

The boot, too is adequate with a small hatchlike 264 litres (it betters the Mazda 2 by just 8 litres), expanding to 1174 when the seats are dropped.

It has a nifty false floor under which you can sling laptops, tablets and whatever else you want to hide that roughly will fit in a depth of around 10 cm.

The front seats are very comfortable but unfortunately the lack of armrest - a problem shared with its rival Renault Captur, for instance - makes for a less than appealing long distance proposition.

Overall the cabin is light-on for storage. There are only two cupholders for the front and none in the rear, without even an armrest to balance drinks on - though that might be just as well…

Don’t get too excited about the head-up display, either - it’s projected onto a tiny retractable blade of glass and isn’t especially helpful but does mean you don’t have to use the silly main instrument panel to check your speed.

Six airbags, blind spot sensor, brake assist, stability and traction controls, rear cross traffic warning, collision mitigation forward and reverse, brake force distribution, ABS, hill holder, lane departure warning. The CX-3 earned five ANCAP stars.

SPORT Back to business for Reed LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake GEELONG Cricket Club continued it’s splendid post-Christmas form on Saturday with a dominant display against Melbourne Uni. Bowling first, the Cats enjoyed the inclusion of Jake Reed, back from Big Bash duties, and the speedster slotted straight back in taking 5/44 from 14 overs.

He recieved great support from Hayden Butterworth (3/24) as Melbourne Uni were all out for 225.

With 34 overs to bat, Geelong would have hoped to simply wipe a few runs off their target without losing too many wickets.

But keeper/batsman Josh McDonald had other ideas, opening the innings and smashing 105 from just 70 balls, with 16 fours and 6 sixes.

It was a welcome return to form that helped Geelong go to stumps in a dominant position at 3/193. They will look to press on early tomorrow and perhaps try for a second innings win to boost their points and head upwards on the ladder.

In the Geelong Cricket Association, the one day games of the fixture have now all been played, with just three rounds of two day games left before finals.

In Division One, third placed Lara host second placed South Barwon in a game that both sides have so much to play for.

Lara have been the surprise packet of the season so far, and with a good mix of experience and youth, can pretty much lock in a finals spot with a good showing here. However, if they were to lose, it leaves them vulnerable.

The Swans will also see this as a crucial game, knowing that a win will almost guarantee a top two spot, which could be critical in such a tightly contested season. Playing at home with everything to play for, Lara might just be too strong here.

Kingfish prove the challenge ON THE BITE Chris Pitman KINGFISH were taken off Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads in the past week but proved a little more challenging to locate.

Dropping smaller jigs onto schooled up fish located with a sounder did the trick, resulting in kings to 70cm.

Other anglers drifting out wide in 50m bagged large numbers of tiger flathead.

Tackleworld Geelong’s Kevin Hunter boated an impressive bag of tigers on baits bounced along the bottom.

Mark Sesar, Adrian Cole and Keith Fry ventured out of Barwon Heads on Sunday, encountering plenty of seven gill sharks while fishing baits on the bottom. Then Mark caught some mackerel and baited them up under a balloon, eventually catching a mako shark off about 60kg that took 20 minutes to subdue.

Anglers also sought kingfish inside The Rip at Queenscliff, with some managing to take the larger specimens known to haunt this area.

Australian salmon erupted on the surface in a feeding frenzy most days in the Rip, with anglers boating great numbers on small metal lures and soft plastic cast among the commotion.

Whiting were taken off the grass beds to the east of Queenscliff Harbour, again on pippies and tenderised squid.

Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore spent Sunday afternoon catching a variety of species at Swan Bay. Casting hard-body lures and Gulp soft plastics along the channel edges, Michael boated silver trevally to an outstanding 50cm and flathead to 62cm along with pinkie snapper and even King George whiting. Michael also caught squid over the grass beds in 3m to 4m.

Corio Bay was a hotspot for pinkies, with the fish holding over the spoil grounds and in tight around structure. Soft-plastic anglers fared best but bait also picked up the odd nice flathead.

Tony Hynds cast plastics along the waterfront for pinkies to 40cm along with some pike. Silver blade lures worked well for Tony. Alcoa Pier held schools of salmon to 1kg, which took trolled lures.

The Barwon River estuary continued fishing well for bream and mulloway, with live bait fished on the incoming tide best for both species. Some of the mulloway reached 85cm.

With great weather forecast, next week should be good for kingfish offshore and in The Rip, while anglers who head offshore could find mako shark. Freshwater anglers should find plenty of smaller redfin around Queen’s Park Bridge.

Ocean Grove surfer rips it to take first round of series OCEAN Grove surfer Josh Johnson-Baxter has claimed the opening round of a TOLL Victorian Open Series at Gunnamatta. The 27-year-old won his first open state round with a mixing of progressive and power manoeuvres in challenging one to 1.5m waves on Saturday.

“I’m just really stoked. It has taken a fair few years to get a win in an open state round, but I

finally made it,” Johnson-Baxter said.

“It was a good day. Everyone was ripping, it was really hard to get through most heats.”

The open men’s final featured multiple highscoring rides for an exciting climate to the event.

Runner-up Carl Wright, of Phillip Island, finished .4 of a point behind Johnson-Baxter.

Flinders’ Georgia Fish, a World Surf League

qualifying series competitor, won the open women’s division from runner-up, Jemima Hutchings from Barwon Heads, and Jan Juc pair Rebecca Morgan and Ella Sweeney in third and fourth respectively.

The series’ next round is at Phillip Island in February before concluding at Bells Beach in September.
