By ANEEKA SIMONIS THE impending closure of Masters Home Improvement store in Pakenham will see more than 100 employees turfed out of a job.

It is the second major hardware store to leave Pakenham in the past few months following the mid-year closure of the Hardy’s Mitre 10 store, further monopolising Bunnings as the go-to for home and garden improvements.

The Pakenham store is one of the company’s 63 outlets across the country that are due to close.

The store, which employs 110 staff, has been open for two years and was the 16th to open in Victoria.

Masters owner Woolworths issued a statement on Monday 18 January saying that it would take several months for its joint-venture partner to exercise its option to sell its stake in the business to Woolworths.

The joint-venture partners had been under shareholder pressure to wind up the business following ongoing losses.

The statement said that it would take at least two months to wind up the financial arrangements and following this a potential sale process or other exit

process would take additional time.

“The business will continue to trade through this period. Our top priority is to do the right thing by all stakeholders," the statement read.

Residents empathised with the dozens of hardware workers that will now have to search for a new job.

“Sad for the people that work there,” wrote Carol on the Gazette’s Facebook page.

However, others took the opportunity to make suggestions for appropriate retailers to take over the space.

Kmart was a hot favourite, a sentiment echoed by more than 3000 people supporting an online campaign for the store to develop in Pakenham.

Hardy’s Mitre 10 in Pakenham shut its store in August last year. The iconic local store operated in the area for more than 60 years.

It employed 80 staff, some believed to have taken up employment at the soon-to-be-closed Masters chain.

The Hardy’s site, located on the corner of Bald Hill Road and Racecourse Road, was taken over by hardware giant Bunnings.

Masters Home Improvement stores will shut nationwide.

Train times off the rails

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM FEWER than 90 per cent of Pakenham line trains ran on time last year, making the line one of the worst three in Melbourne for punctuality.

Metro data reveals that 89.3 per cent of Pakenham trains departing on schedule in 2015, higher only than the Cranbourne line and on par with Frankston.

But the figure is an improvement on the 2014 average of 88.3 per cent, which staked Pakenham as the worst Metro line for punctuality that year.

Overall, the Metro network recorded a 0.3 per cent punctuality decrease in 2015 with

the average rate across all lines sitting at 92.5 per cent.

The statistics come as the State Government considers drastic action to improve the line, including the possibility of converting parts of the track into an elevated ‘sky rail’.

The Labor government has committed to removing 12 level crossings on the Cranbourne-Pakenham line, however construction has not yet begun on any of them.

Metro performance thresholds require that at least 88 per cent of its services be punctual - defined by the proportion of services which arrive no later than five minutes after their scheduled time.

Fewer than 90 per cent of trains on the Pakenham line ran on time last year.

Birthday celebration for Des THE Shanagolden Aged Care facility in Pakenham had a friendly invasion in early January.

The facility was taken over on Thursday 7 January by members of the Dore family, who were there to make sure resident Des Dore had a memorable 88th birthday.

“There would have been quite a few more of us too, but we had a few family members away,” his son Mishy Dore explained.

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM EVERY Friday morning, motorists on Pakenham's Eagle Drive get a stern speed reminder from residents - it’s 50 in their street.

The street is part of a Cardinia Shire Council trial program, where each house was provided with stickers as a way to combat hooning in the problematic area. The stickers read '50 in my street’ and are stuck onto the bins sitting along the kerb on both sides of the road.

Cardinia Shire councillor Collin Ross, who initially raised the idea two years ago as a No-

tice of Motion, said the program has been so successful he would like to see it implemented in other parts of the shire.

“We hear stories every day about hooning in the community, and the '50 in my street’ road safety program is one way of getting the message through,” he said.

“At the moment it’s in Eagle Drive but I’m going to ramp it up more to see if we can expand it further.”

Cr Ross has met with his Casey Council counterparts, who have found the stickers to be an effective strategy on roads where speed is a recurring prob-

lem.

He said that while the first batch of stickers each cost the council “around a couple of dollars”, mass production would bring down the cost.

“I would like to see that areas in the Cardinia Shire might be sent out something with their rates notice, but initially we’ll just see how it goes,” Cr Ross said.

“There’s one small complication in that if we get 50km/k stickers done some problem areas might be 40 or 60 or 70km/h limits, so for the moment we’d just do 50km/h areas and hope to expand.”

WIDA Tausif didn’t want her dream to stay a dream.

Even at 23 years of age, the Narre Warren South kinder teacher was determined not to let doubt overcome her hope of being a writer.

It was the impetus for Wida to write and selfpublish her first book, Don’t Give Up On Your Dreams - a children’s picture book about - you guessed it - chasing your dreams.

“Personally I did face a few obstacles, there was discouragement from a few people but I just kept going,” Wida said.

“I want to encourage young children that if they have a passion, don’t give up.”

While her first book was officially launched just last week, Wida isn’t a stranger to writing.

As well as contributing articles to magazines the 23-year-old loves poetry and has penned many of her own poems.

Having been born in war-torn Afghanistan before moving to New Zealand and then Australia, Wida already has a wealth of experiences to draw on when putting pen to paper.

“A lot of girls back home, in the Middle East and parts of Asia, they don’t have enough rights do things with life, they’re encouraged to stay home,” Wida said.

“So for a woman to go out and do something, it encourages the community.

“A lot of my friends have a lot of dreams.”

Already Wida’s dreams seem closer with every step. When she couldn’t find anyone to publish her book, she published it herself.

When she felt like she was being deterred from writing she continued to pen poems, with one of them even being selected to go on display at a human rights exhibition in Vancouver, Canada.

A passionate humanitarian, Wida believes writing can serve as the perfect conduit to further her cause.

“I try to promote peace through poetry,” she said.

“Words are strong, and we can use them as a weapon.”

AN ENDEAVOUR Hills man will turn to the Australian Government for help after his 81-year-old Ahmadi Muslim father was imprisoned in Pakistan last month.

Khalid Ahmad’s father, Abdul Shakoor, who owns a bookshop in Pakistan where the Ahmadi faith is outlawed, made international headlines when he was jailed for eight years in December for selling books deemed hurtful or hateful to another religious group’s beliefs.

The 81-year-old, who has run the book store in Rabwah since 1988, was charged under a set of blasphemy laws which specifically target Ahmadi Muslims, according to the Huffington Post.

Seeking help to save his father, Khalid reached out to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association of Victoria, based in Langwarrin, and is calling on the Federal Government to use any influence it can.

“The Australian Government can put political stress on the Pakistani government to abolish this law which doesn’t protect us,” Khalid said.

“We have been persecuted for a long, long time.”

In 1974 the Pakistani Government adopted a law declaring Ahmadis to be non-Muslims and the country is reported as the only Muslim country that has used its constitution to per-

secute a specific group.

Khalid, who speaks to his parents on the phone several times a day, was “shattered” when his mum told him the book store had been raided and his father arrested.

“I rang them and talked to my dad for a few minutes but a few hours later I got a call from my mum and she told me he’d been arrested and we don’t know where they’ve taken him,” he said.

“I was completely shattered to hear about this.”

Holt MP Anthony Byrne has previously praised the efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association and highlighted the faith’s persecution around the world in a speech to Federal Parliament.

In 2014 Star News reported on Alam Mahmood Butt from Narre Warren whose younger brother was shot dead by unknown assailants in Kamra, Pakistan, in what was believed to be another targetted attack on someone from the minority Ahmadi faith.

Prior to this, the News reported on Berwick-based Ahmadiyya Muslim Waheed Ahmad Chatha, whose cousin was also fatally shot in Pakistan in what was also thought to be a targeted attack.

Pakistan has the largest population of Ahmadi Muslims in the world, with an estimated 2 to 5 million living in the country.

TOO many of us have become complacent about fire.

Hot and blustery, Monday 18 January 2016 had been declared a day of Total Fire Ban. Yet, inexplicably, Endeavour Hills was abuzz with lawn mowers, with council contractors en masse pole sawing and chipping branches from nature strips, and with builders grinding in a haze of concrete dust in their efforts to reconstruct a house destroyed by fire last year.

Meanwhile an out-of-control fire threatened all at Crib Point, until a life-saving southerly blew its embers north; embers settling on window sills to remind all who choose to risk life and property that fire is, indeed, a deadly master.

The River Gum Ward councillor was smiling ear to ear to see his wife, Renee, seated in the audience with their newborn baby Xavier.

Xavier, only two weeks old, was born over the Christmas period.

Renee and Xavier were welcomed to the chamber by Mayor Sam Aziz, a very special moment coming nearly three years after Cr Rosario’s only daughter, Amelia, died at birth.

Amelia was cruelly struck with Patau syndrome - a genetic disorder that produces an extra copy of the 13th chromosome.

Since then Renee has helped other families enduring the same heart-breaking diagnosis.

DURING my early morning walk around the streets of Hampton Park I notice things and what I see is not nice but an eyesore.

In the 43 years we have lived here, I have never seen it so bad - graffiti on the concrete walls and fences near the creek and rubbish dumped on the nature strip on Highland Avenue, which has been there since before Christmas.

A vacant block of land on Village Drive is now a dumping ground.

Dead tree branches down the middle of Pound Road.

The grass cutter just goes round them.

It seems the council and VicRoads are not interested in cleaning up.

However, the worst mess is the amount of rubbish dumped outside the Salvos shop on Stuart Avenue.

Years ago Hampton Park was a clean place to live but not anymore.

ONE Star News reporter had wishful thinking this week when he hoped to attend a Casey Council meeting and the Australian Open in the same night.

The journalist was making good time, with the council meeting looking like it would wrap up within an hour.

But that was before a prickly motion was brought up during the petition section which saw the meeting delayed an extra half an hour.

The good news is the journo still got to the

tennis - from Narre Warren to Richmond - that night and made it court-side to watch a ripper five-set match.

TERRY from Narre Warren contacted the News a bit perturbed that Mercedes Benz Berwick is actually in Narre Warren.

That may be so, Terry, but it doesn’t seem a big deal and the trend is fairly widespread.

Have a look to the east and Berwick Pottery and Berwick Motor Body Repairs, two other reputable businesses, are actually in Officer.

All are well accessible to the good people of Berwick.

LEFT to rack and ruin the old Tooradin Pub may not be cleaned up until Santa arrives next year!

A dumping site and canvas for budding street artists, the South Gippy eyesore may eventually end up as either a restaurant or service station.

But Casey council advises that it has granted an extension on works to start, which must be completed by December 2019.

It’s been a long wait, with the original planning permit released back in 2013.

Clinton’s run back to life

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CLINTON Fraser says he’s not a religious man.

But after the Cranbourne father-of-three collapsed from a heart attack last month and came back from the brink of death, the 46-year-old admits he has more than a little luck on his side.

“Yeah it’s made me think gee, it definitely wasn’t my time,” Clinton told Star News.

“Because two days earlier when it was 38 degrees I went for a run up in Lysterfield Lake by myself, doing hill work, and I had the chest pain.

“Had I collapsed at Lysterfield I would not be here today.”

Clinton is here thanks to the quick-thinking of a number of people who rushed to his aid, performing CPR and did their best to keep him stable before the paramedics arrived.

These people, including Clinton, are all members of the Berwick Springs Parkrun group who exercise every Saturday morning.

On this particular Saturday - 19 December - Clinton had just finished doing his warmup lap with his 17-year-old son, Jeremy, when he began to feel dizzy.

“I was over away by myself and I remember saying out loud ‘Jeremy I don’t feel well’ and then I just started turning in a circle and that’s when I collapsed,” Clinton said, who has vague recollections of being resuscitated before passing out again.

He was then rushed to hospital and remained unconscious for the next two days.

Clinton was told his blood flow stopped for as long as 20 minutes at one point.

Later the doctor approached Jeremy and the rest of Clinton’s family in the hospital ward to tell them to prepare for the worst.

“The doctor said it’s quite severe what happened and they weren’t sure if he was going to make it or not,” Jeremy said.

“Originally we thought they were going to say he’d died and

passed away.

“We were quite surprised he recovered so quickly.”

In this moment, when Clinton finally opened his eyes, Jeremy rushed to hug his father and hold his hand.

From his own perspective, when he woke in the hospital bed Clinton remembers hearing the surgeons talking about an intravenous tube.

“I tell people this, I felt like I was in my stomach and I followed the tube out, into the bright light,” Clinton said.

“And that’s when I woke up.”

Last Saturday 18 January, Clinton met with his parkrun team-mates for the first time since his heart attack.

Although he’s not allowed to run again yet, he was welcomed with open arms and overwhelmed to meet up with the people who had helped save his life.

Bail-out burglars left empty-handed POLICE are investigating an attempted burglary in Berwick this month.

Sometime between 12.30pm on 11 January and 12.30pm on

14 January the thieves forced open the security door at the Sing Court home, before trying to jemmy open the front wooden door as well but to no avail.

They also tried but failed to force open the garage roller door.

Nothing was stolen from the property.

Thieves steal the free food

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE food is given away free of charge to anyone that needs it four times a week - but thieves decided to steal it anyway.

About $500 worth of two minute noodles, muesli bars and food to go was stolen from the Cranbourne Regional Uniting Church food truck on Sunday 13 December.

The Reverend Wendy Snook said the fallout from the “sad” incident is long term and the church is still recovering from the incident a month on.

“It’s just really sad that people feel they have to attack something that’s there for the community,” Rev Snook said.

“And, really, it’s the poor of Cranbourne who have suffered the most because the money we’d usually put toward them in free food, coats for winter and toiletries is being used to set up security for the truck.”

The food truck, which is kept on the church’s premises, is believed to have been broken into using bolt cutters about 4am.

And repair and security costs will total about $1000.

“Our special light, which runs off the truck battery, was taken, the wiring that was on the roof of the truck which lights up our security lighting was pulled out,” Rev Snook said.

The truck has been operating in Cranbourne for three years and feeds up to 100 people a week.

Fortunately, basic repairs could be made which allowed the truck to continue its work the next night.

“It’s the first time it’s hap-

pened... maybe they had the midnight munchies,” Rev Snook said.

The City of Casey has given the church an emergency grant to help with the immediate costs and Rev Snook said the church will add extra security cameras.

ABBEY Beck may only be eight but already she’s following in the footsteps of her tennis idols - all the way to the courts of Rod Laver Arena.

The Berwick local is one of 12 lucky Australian children who have won a VIP trip to the Australian Open, which begins next week, as part of the ANZ Tennis Hot Shot of the Year competition.

During the visit the kids will play on the same courts as the world’s best players and watch them in action as they vie for a Grand Slam title.

From these 12 nominees, one of them will be crowned this year’s final winner and will receive $5000, one year of free tennis coaching, and a visit from ambassador Alicia Molik to their local tennis club for a private lesson with three friends.

When Abbey heard the new that she’d be selected as one of the lucky 12, she couldn’t even get to sleep that night.

“I’m looking forward to playing at Rod Laver, meeting the players and being in a hotel and getting chauffeured around,” she told Star News.

“My favourite players are Serena Williams, Sam Stosur, because they’re both very strong. Serena’s won a lot of

If her early years are anything to go by, Abbey could be following in the footsteps of her idol, Serena, sooner rather than later.

Abbey’s been playing tennis at Berwick Tennis Club since she was four and is now under the tutelage of coach Lois Plowman.

Her older siblings, Ava and Connor, are also keen tennis players while their parents ac-

tually met each other as junior tennis players at Noble Park.

Abbey’s mum, Lisa, said her family was ecstatic to learn the eight-year-old had won through to play on Melbourne’s famous tennis court.

“We never would have thought she would have won it,” Lisa said.

“It’s exciting for all of us.”

“Abbey is very enthusiastic about her tennis, it’s one of her favourites.”

LYNBROOK trainee chef Christel Darion will be among alumni such as renowned chef George Calombaris as she takes on a Mastercheflike competition next month.

A cooking student at Dandenong’s Chisolm Institute of Tafe, Christel, 27, is one of 32 finalists in the Australia wide ‘Fonterra Proud to be a Chef’ (FPC) competition.

The celebrated FPC intensive educational program will give one lucky winner $7500 to spend on an international culinary paid placement, exclusively tailored to their aspirations as a professional chef.

If won, a placement that would take Christel back to her French roots as she aims to pursue a career in pastry.

“I was so happy to become a finalist, it’s already so great for me, even if I don’t win,” Christel said.

“I would love to have my own pastry shop that’s one of my dreams, coffee and pastry.”

Born in France, Christel arrived in Lynbrook just over a year ago and currently works as a kitchen hand in an Italian restaurant.

And she hopes her experience in the 17th annual FPC puts her in good stead for a full-time restaurant job.

“I am looking forward to gaining new experiences, meeting other young chefs like myself and learning from the mentors,” Christel said.

The four-day culinary extravaganza will have the finalists cooking their own recipe for the judges, participating in masterclasses and dining at some of Melbourne’s most exciting restaurants.

Christel hopes to have practiced her recipe four times before she cooks for her future but says she’ll be proud of herself no matter the outcome.

“It’s such a great opportunity for me and to have competed in something George Calombaris has in the past is an honour,” she said.

Christel and the finalists will be mentored by esteemed Australian culinary leaders Anna Polyviou, executive pastry chef at ShangriLa Hotel in Sydney; Josh Pelham, head chef at ESP and Estelle in Melbourne; and Peter Wright, foodservice expert and global event specialist.

A passionate kitchen hand, Christel said cooking was as much a hobby as it was a job.

“I read a lot about cooking,” she said, laughing.

“Whenever I have time I buy cooking books and YouTube recipes, the internet is full of inspiration for me.”

Man arrested in police car blitz

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A 22-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with 46 thefts from cars in the Berwick area following last week’s police blitz.

The Ballarat man was arrested by a tactical police crew last week as 200 detectives and plain-clothes officers hit the streets across the southern metro region over three days.

He was remanded in custody and will appear at the Frankston Magistrates’ Court next month.

Last week Acting Commander Russell Barrett said the operation would include knocking on doors of recidivist offenders, ensuring bail compliance and contacting any outstanding persons of interest.

“We know that repeat offenders are definitely responsible for driving up theft numbers,” Acting Cmdr Barrett said.

“We’ve had a lot of success in several areas, including Dandenong where we’ve been able to charge recidivist offenders.

We’ve seen thefts drop but we still have a long way to go.

“When we stop offences like theft from motor vehicle and theft of motor vehicle, it has a real impact on other flow-on offences such as armed robbery, deceptions and ram raids.”

The crackdown comes after research revealed a 20 per cent state-wide increase in thefts from cars over the past five years.

“We’re still seeing people leaving valuables in their car in full view of anyone walking past,” Cmdr Barrett said.

“People continue to leave vehicles unlocked, number plates poorly secured and windows down.

“It’s all an invitation for criminals to steal these items.”

He said it was an issue that “all of the community need to take notice of”.

“We’re seeing thefts occurring from Frankston to Brighton, from Dandenong to Toorak,” Cmdr Barrett said.

“If we can get the public on board, hopefully together we can make the community a safer place.”

It comes after police undertook a routine weapons and drugs search at Dandenong train station last month.

Transit Safety Division and local police were joined by members from the Dog Squad to patrol the area with Passive Alert Detector (PAD) dogs to stop anyone carrying illicit drugs.

The hard-working Casey students who received a Holt Community Spirit and Leadership Award.

Spirit shines so brightly

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD STUDENTS in Casey know the meaning of community spirit.

This was evident when 41 students from 39 local schools were recognised last month at the 2015 Holt Community Spirit and Leadership Awards which were held at the Cranbourne Community Theatre.

The annual awards ceremony - now in its 14th year - was hosted by Holt MP Anthony Byrne and saw more than 200 people attend.

“These awards recognise the outstanding contribution made by the students and the difference their hard work and dedication has made to their schools

and the wider community,” Mr Byrne said.

Among those recognised on the night was Haley Kelly from Cranbourne West Primary School.

The Year 4 student is actively involved in numerous clubs at school and is always the first to offer help to others.

She is a choir captain and ukulele mentor and has also been assisting with the Cranbourne West Primary School Breakfast and Brunch Club since she was three years old.

Powerful piston-popping BURNING rubber, fierce competition and sparkling chrome had the crowds in a spin at the weekend’s Tooradin Tractor Pull and Truck Show.

Masses piled into Rutter Reserve on Saturday 16 January, and show president Allyn Reeve said the day should provide community organisations with a share in up to $35,000.

“We had around 4000 people turn up which means we’ll be able to put about the same amount of proceeds back into the community as we have in the past,” Mr Reeve said.

The show has been a Tooradin favourite for the past 17 years and had about 85 trucks on show, 40 tractors and more than 45 cars.

Mr Reeve said the event had

people waiting at the gates from 8am.

“The tractors are the most popular and we had crowds watching them until 10.30pm,” Mr Reeve said.

But it was afternoon show stopper Justine Mott who pumped up the crowds in her Holden Gemini.

“The crowd was rocking on the fences, they go crazy, they were singing to me as I was walking into the track,” Ms Mott said.

Mum of two, Ms Mott, 33, took her orange beast for a spin in the burn outs display leaving the track in a cloud of pastel pinks.

“I’ve been skidding at Tooradin for the past two years and doing burn out competitions for five years,” Ms Mott said.

Competing in up to 20 shows a year Ms Mott, from Nyora, said she was in it for the fun, not the prize money.

“You don’t practice; you just get out there at events - I’m off to Shepparton next week to compete in the Xtreme powerfest,” she said.

One of few women in the skid scene Ms Mott said the fact she is a female is a novelty in itself.

“The crowds love it, when I get out of the car you’ll hear things like ‘Oh my gosh, that’s a girl, I can’t believe it’ and you get a bit of fan base,” she said.

The tractor pull saw 24 winners on the day and a collection of 25 vintage tractors on display.

“We had the most tractors we’ve had in years,” organiser Greg Abrehart said.

Great start to new year for Pumas

By JARROD POTTER RINGING in the new year with an emphatic win, Pakenham Pumas picked up where they left off in 2015 for their inaugural Summer Baseball campaign.

They invited Footscray down to Toomuc Reserve in the baking heat and the Pumas turned up the hits in a 14-2 win giving everyone plenty to cheer about to start 2016.

Errors beset the Footscray effort in the field and thankfully the visitors were shown some form of mercy in the seventh innings.

James Mills started the Sunday session with some searing pitching -with Footscray only gaining advantage off errors behind the plate - before Simon Ferris and Scott Dale finished the job on the mound.

Pakenham’s 12-batter first innings all but crushed Footscray as Wayne Porter and Dale started the run-mania before Travis Hough and James Mills took it out to a four-nil lead half way through the first innings off a Footscray fielding error.

John Beech’s “bunt” didn’t pay dividends, but the remain-

der of the Pumas’ line-up loaded the bases thrice, emptied them twice and utterly demoralised the visitors.

Ferris rounded the bases next - brought in via Martin Kennedy slugging it through the infield - before Kennedy, Andrew Sullivan and Jay Ziersch had a quick lap around Toomuc’s bases to make it 8-0 by the end of the first.

The visitors scored two on a second-innings error, but their highlights package ended there as the Pumas racked up another six runs to finish the job.

It was all the more remarkable with coach and lead-off hitter Shaun Fahy absent showing the great depth of the squad heading towards finals.

“Eight run first innings we just hit the stuffing out of the ball and took the foot off the accelerator,” Hough said. “I think they were a bit undermanned from what we saw last time, but that’s a good start for the year.

“We scored a couple more in the second and from there it was dribs and drabs - after the first they put their outfielders right back and we kept hitting it hard

and straight down their throatsso I guess that paid off for them in the end, but was a foregone conclusion in the end.”

A 10-3 record gives the Pumas a five-win break on third placed Chelsea, guaranteeing the local side at least second place heading into finals.

The celebrations weren’t saved just for the seniors though as for the first time in its existence, no Pakenham team lost this round.

The seconds started the party with a come-from-behind 7-5 triumph over Footscray.

It was a weekend-long celebration for Jay Mazurek - who struck it cleanly and back up his batting with a starring relief pitching effort to guide the Pumas to victory, while Gregg Clutterbuck was just as prominent with the bat in hand.

The thirds had a triumph of sorts ... or at least didn’t lose as Doncaster B forfeited.

Pakenham will host Research in the Wednesday midweek match before heading out to Glenauburn Park to face the same side once again on Sunday.

MOST kids go through January thinking about sun, surf or relaxing at home ... but Matt Lawless has had his sights set on playing his part in one of Australia’s biggest sporting events.

Lawless, 14, from Officer, had an early start this week as he began his second campaign as an Australian Open ballkid.

After he made it through the qualifying sessions for a second year in a row, to get his pass to on-court, Lawless was thrilled to be one of 380 ballkids ready and raring for the Australian Open.

“It was pretty exciting because I really like tennis and it’s a good experience as you get to meet some of the players as well and get right up close to the action,” Lawless said.

“I’ll be applying again next year - it’s a good experience and while I’m able to I’ll keep doing it.

He hopes to be up close to the action and potentially experience a match with Roger Federer or retiring Australian tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt.

Lawless also hopes to play a part of a final - every ballkid’s big ambition.

“In my first year last time I got onto Show Court 2 - which was a very good one for my first year - and I’d like to improve on that and maybe get onto Rod Laver (Arena),” Lawless said.

“I also got a wheelchair final last year - which was good to watch - but Rod Laver (Arena) would be my goal.”

He’s not just a tennis spectator, as Lawless can be seen most weekends smashing aces for Narre Warren in the Berwick District Tennis Association.

“I’ve been playing since I was five years old - starting at Berwick then I moved to Narre Warren and I play in Section 2,” Lawless said. “I played junior pennant and two years ago

A new committee, consisting of quite a few of the old committee, was elected. Life member Nick Wright was elected for his second term as President with a new face, Emily Robbins Vice President. Leon Prosser was welcomed back onto the committee as Secretary and Rob Sanderson continues as Trea-

surer. Other committee members are Glad Fish, Tim Stuchbery, Peter Morrison, John Hill, Mick Kelly, Larry Kogge and new to the committee for 2016 is Terry Hogan. Terry, as well as his role as official club photographer, will be helping Glad with the Junior Development Driver Training program which introduced over 70 young people to motorsport in 2015.

Lions set for finals

By DAVID NAGEL PAKENHAM is the only team certain of playing in the West Gippsland Premier Division finals series after a weekend of curve balls for its main rivals.

Cardinia (98 points), Tooradin (90) and Kooweerup (82) split their results one-one over the weekend double-header while fifth-placed Merinda Park (78) is applying real pressure after its two emphatic victories.

The Cobras (2/182) easily accounted for Emerald (179) on Saturday, Dan McCalman (81 not out) and Dylan Cuthbertson (72 not out) sharing an unbeaten 124-run stand after Jason Toan (3/24) had restricted the Bombers prior to tea.

The Cobras (6/207) then made their biggest statement of the season on Sunday with a resounding victory over Tooradin (111).

McCalman (60 not out) was once again the rock, remaining unbeaten for the weekend, sharing a 96-run union with skipper Danny Diwell (67) that pushed the score past 200.

“Danner’s (McCalman) has been fantastic for us all year, he knows his role and provides us with the perfect platform to bat around,” Diwell said.

“It was great to share that partnership with him because that’s what the good sides do, they get good starts and they go on with it.”

The Cobras then dismantled the Seagulls, claiming the key wickets of Tom Hussey (1), Aaron Avery (3) and Bradey Welsh (5) early and keeping their nose to the grindstone.

“It’s an area (bowling) we thought we might struggle in this year but we’re just bowling to a very simple plan, doing it consistently and bowling to our fields,” Diwell said.

Chris Milne (2/12), Leigh Paterson (2/13) and Toan (2/22) followed Diwell’s instructions to the letter.

Pakenham’s Ben Shipperd had a weekend that he won’t forget in a hurry.

First he claimed a unique hat-trick as the Lions (6/223) wore down Kooweerup (192) at Toomuc Reserve.

Shipperd (3/27) had Matt Bright (7) caught behind by Rob Elston, then John Bright (0) stumped by the same acquaintance before bowling Rob Bright Jnr (0) to claim the first hat-trick of his career.

Sean Gramc (77) and Rob Elston (48) also starred for the Lions who then accounted for Emerald on Sunday.

Shipperd (100 not out) once again provided the highlight, bringing up his maiden century for the Lions with a six off the last ball of the match, the Lions (2/198) chasing the Bombers

(9/193) competitive total with apparent ease.

Chris Smith (46) proved the perfect foil for Shipperd, while skipper Dom Paynter (4/25) was potent with the ball and Emerald’s AJ Walker (63) also performed well.

In other games on the weekend, Chris O’Hara (65 not out) and Jess Mathers (3/24) led Kooweerup (4/155) to a crucial victory over Cardinia (7/151) -who had an easy win itself over Cranbourne Meadows (114) on Saturday.

Ben Maroney (3/7), Neil Barfuss (3/17) and Travis Wheller (3/29) were terrific for the Bulls (2/120) before Alex Nooy (67 not out) completed the rout.

A superb half-century from Upper Beaconsfield’s (151) Bath Perera (82) was cancelled out by Tom Hussey (62) and Bradey Welsh (60 not out) in Tooradin’s (3/152) Saturday win at Upper Beac, while Perera (64), Julian Bayard (54) and Tommy Tyrrell (3/24) played key roles in the Maroons (6/266) bounce-back victory over Cranbourne Meadows (7/180) on Sunday.

THE towering innings from Officer E Grade skipper Luke Johnson had to be seen to be believed as he smashed a sensational 215 against Lang Lang.

Johnson won probably the best toss of his career so far - sending himself and Garry Tivendale in to do some damage against Lang Lang in Saturday’s WGCA 40-over one-dayer.

The 24-year-old captain came into the match at the Nyora Primary School ground searching for a bit of form having only averaged 10.7 before the weekend.

He found his form - and then some - as he raised the bat four times in the double-century before backing it up with some valuable wickets to help the side take a ridiculous 185-run win.

“It was a good day out,” Johnson said. “I was hitting the biggest balls I’ve ever seen in my life - anything on the legside - they were putting them on the legs and anything short was just gone.

“Then we bowled and I took 4/22, so I was stoked with that too - fantastic day.”

After rocketing to his first century ever, there were no nervous 190s approaching the next major milestone as Johnson dispatched the best of the Swamp Tigers’ attack past the train tracks to notch the double-ton.

“The six I brought the 200 up with - over onto the train tracks at Nyora Primary,” Johnson said. “It’s a small ground

“Everyone got up and started cheering - never thought that would ever happen.

“It’s my first ever century I’ve hit two fifties and usually just an anchor through the innings, but it was just opportunity and had a bit confidence to play some shots.”

He smashed his Willowizard at anything that moved - particularly on the leg side as he punished the bowlers with 27 fours and a whopping 14 sixes as he combined for the best part of the innings with Rick Dunstone - who smashed 104 of his own as Officer made 6/413.

“Just batted through the innings and put on a 240 run part-

nership with Rick Dunstone and that was good,” Johnson said.

“He was talking to me, keeping my head in it the whole innings.

“He was unreal too - his was a great century - very helpful and he was great at the other end.”

Johnson’s attempt at carrying the bat fell five balls short as he was skittled in the final over of the innings - but all the same it made for a day to remember ... despite the fact that noone in the team or at the club remembered to take a photo of him batting or celebrating after the game.

He’ll just have to remember the sensational knock or replicate that form when his side faces Gembrook this week.
