Local talent has the voice

SINCE local songstress Imogen Brough compelled all four judges to turn around during the blind auditions on The Voice in 2013, things have never been the same.

The 24-year-old from Newtown was an instant hit on the Channel 9 series and she has just released her second album - Into the Moonlight, which rounded off a 2015 that was furiously busy.

Imogen shot to fame during the second season of The Voice before eventually choosing to be mentored by Latino hunk Ricky Martin, whom she described as “lovely” and “just as nervous as the contestants”.

Since then Imogen has released her debut album, Counting Waves, before writing and singing all eight songs on Into the Moonlight, except one, which she co-wrote with former Australian Idol winner Damien Leith. The album is

heavily Celtic in style.

“Being Irish, he has that same passion for that type of Celtic music,” she said. “The song was a bit of fun.”

Imogen’s Celtic style is inspired by Enya and Loreena McKennitt (“It comes through in my music and the way I write.”) But when I suggested that there were characteristics that were similar to one of The Voice judges - Delta Goodrem - she was not surprised.

“I’ve been told that before,” she said. “In a way, I think of my time on The Voice and it would have been good to work with Delta.” Imogen said her experience on the hit TV series was invaluable.

“There’s two sides to The Voice - people either love it or they don’t see the value in it,” she said.

“I loved the first season and just thought I’d have a go in the second. I came away with a huge fan base and you need fans to make things happen.”

PAKO people “The whole fame thing is not what it’s cranked up to be,” she said. “I like the emotional connections that music can create. Music that connects with a film - I’d love to be part of something like that. One of my dreams would be to work with a composer on a piece of film music. The theme music, for say, Lord of the Rings, it has that emotional feel to it.

I’d love to be recognised as a real-world artist.”

In the meantime, the early part of 2016 will be “looking for opportunities and a time for me to get back on the piano and start songwriting again.”

When not singing or songwriting, Imogen still hangs out locally. She reckons Born and Bred Bakehouse has “the best jam croissants” and Boom Gallery is her cafe of choice for coffee.

Imogen grew up in Newtown and attended Bond Street kindergarten, Chilwell Primary School and, later, Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College. She started playing the piano at age seven and hasn’t stopped being musically active since.

“I had a great childhood,” she said. “I was an outdoorsy type of kid and was always singing. We weren’t on iPads or anything, we were always outside doing things.”

Into the Moonlight is a collection of eight songs, some with a Celtic undertone and some with a more contemporary feel. “The feedback we’ve gotten has been positive,” she said.

‘Your Kind Eyes’ is a tender love song while ‘Heart’ is a little more upbeat.

“Was ‘Your Kind Eyes’ for someone in particular?”

I asked.

“It might be,” she responded coyly.

Imogen’s immediate plans are to give the songs on Into the Moonlight a chance to shine. “The next step is finding the songs an opportunity to do something,” she said. After that, her passion for movie soundtracks could open up an entirely different path, but world domination was not one of them, she said modestly.

National treasure’s gems

By KERRIE BEDSON IT’S difficult to put Michael Leunig in a box, and I imagine he would be happy about that.

Known by many as the cartoonist for the Melbourne Age and the Sydney Morning Herald, he can also be described as an environmentalist.

Like any deep piece of artwork, his cartoons challenge you to think, and inspire you to be. They often make social, political and environmental comment, and at other times encourage reflection, time out, and quiet contemplation.

In 1999 Michael Leunig was officially named a National Living National Treasure by the National Trust of Australia. Seven students and one teacher from Newtown Primary School were invited to interview Michael Leunig in conjunction with the launch of his new book ‘The Wayward Leunig’. As young writers and artists themselves, Alex, 10, asked that age-old question, ‘How do you get your ideas?”

Michael suggested that ideas are everywhere, you just have to be alert to them. He said, “I find ideas interesting, if you like them, they will turn up. I might be talking to you right now, at this

very moment in the situation I am in with you. This will get me thinking about things. Funny things, serious things. The idea of you all just sitting there, talking to a man on a screen. That’s kind of an idea to work with. That’s an example.”

Flynn, 10, asked Michael ‘What do you see as the main purpose of your cartoons?’

Michael explained; “I don’t want to tell people what to think ... I just want to

make a drawing that will make people think what they want to think. It might awaken thoughts in you. There are many purposes.

Sometimes it is just to make something joyous to come into the world and a picture can be that. It might just be a small thing, but it can be joyous, it can be very truthful, it can be very different. We can draw a better world. When the world is miserable I will make it happy.

You just create a little thing and offer that to the world ... It’s nice.

It can heal the world. A caring that you really felt” Charlotte, 10, asked Michael if he wasn’t a cartoonist, what he would be. Michael said that he would like to work in the forest and plant trees, or maybe be a marine biologist. For anyone that follows Michael’s work, this was an obvious choice for his interest and passion for the natural environment is evident in his cartoons. He is well known for his reflection upon nature and his common inclusion of a duck in

Michael inspired the students with some great words of encouragement, particularly in regards to creativity and art.

Isaac, 10, asked Michael if he had any advice for young artists.

Michael explained that you need “to be brave ... to enjoy making your art or drawing ... because if you enjoy it, that enjoyment goes into the picture.” Isaac also asked Michael “Why do you draw big noses?” (on your characters). Michael explained that when you hear words coming from a strange ridiculous looking character, you see them differently. Because they are cute and quirky, it is easier to accept the words the character has to say.

“If I make that person look a bit loveable and a bit silly, you feel a bit sorry for that little person”.

He suggested to the students that if they ever had trouble drawing something and trying to make it realistic, then to stop trying, and just make it funny or strange and to be creative and inventive.

Full of fruity goodness

By ALLIRA JADE HELLO fellow foodies.Yet another month is upon us and can you believe that month is Christmas?

I’ve been to a few great cafes along Pako lately, but thought I’d share a recipe with you this month.

As summer is upon us I can’t help but make yummy fresh foods, sourcing local products from along Pakington Street as well as throughout Geelong.

My go-to quick and cheap summer dessert is a coconut chia pudding, filled with layers of mango, strawberries and pomegranate.

This is the easiest dessert you could ever make and isn’t time consuming at all.

Chia seeds can be found at your local supermarket or even Geelong fresh foods. Chia seeds are the type of food that fills you up – the little seeds expand as they are left in a liquid.

RECIPE: 1/4 cup chia seeds 1 cup coconut milk Honey to taste METHOD: Add your chia seeds to a bowl, then add your coconut milk and start whisking, slowly add in the honey to taste.

Get yourself a jar or a container for the pudding to set in, set this overnight.

Once your pudding is set you can start layering this in a jar with mango, pomegranate and strawberries.

This would be a hit at a barbecue with friends for a healthy option.

Gardiner plays at the venue fortnightly and said the lodge helped create a laid-back atmosphere.

“It’s a beautiful venue,” she said.

“The atmosphere is quite elegant and special.”

Michelle, a mother of two young daughters aged six and eight, was influenced by her parents’ taste in music when she was growing up in Gladstone Park.

“I grew up on country music,” she said.

“My parents listened to a lot of country music so it was only natural that I would venture into that as well.”

Gardiner said that she gets a mixed reaction when she sings to her girls.

“I’m always singing at home,” she said.

“It often gets a bit much for them but it depends on

what I’m singing at the time but if it’s Taylor Swift then it’s OK with them.

“They’re both doing the singing program at school.”

Gardiner describes her

music as “soulful and laidback” and is influenced by a medley of international artists such as Norah Jones, Adele, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride, Sara Bareilles, Brandi Carlile, Bonnie Rait, Shania Twain, KD Lang, Patsy Cline, Alicia Keys, Etta James and Eva Cassidy.

People travel from the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast to catch Gardiner’s show.

“The people I speak to are mainly from Geelong, Portarlington, Ocean Grove, Torquay,” she said.

“People are happy to travel half an hour or so.”

Gardiner said the focus on her show is her accessibility and not wanting to dominate the stage in any way. “I like to create a warm and inviting atmosphere so people can relax and have a good night,” she said.

1. Preparation and organization are keys to success. Plan your meals in advance, try and do at least a week of meal planning, then you won’t be tempted to get the quick and easy option on your lunch break or pick up some takeaway on the way home from work.

2. Don’t skip meals. This will slow your metabolism and you will burn fat at a slower rate, you may also over eat on your next meal.

3. Move that body. Doing any physical activity is better than doing none.

If you currently do no physical activity, start by doing some, and gradually build up to the recommended amount. The Australian guidelines for physical activity suggest 5 hours of moderate activity or 2.5 hours of vigorous activity a week. Walk your dog, join a gym or a sports club and try to make it something you will enjoy, that way you are more likely to stick at it.

4. If you slip up, don’t beat yourself up. Get back on track.

Warehouse on the world KYO’S huge warehouse is almost a day-trip destination from Pako, such is its range and enormity.

It’s a trade warehouse that’s also open to the public in Ocean Grove. KYO stocks all sorts of unique and interesting items from Japan, China, India and Argentina. The team regularly travels overseas to source the products.

Browse through two warehouses full of furniture, homewares, textiles, lighting, jewellery, dining settings, artwork, enamel signs, ceramics, glassware, mirrors, stools, outdoor display items and much more.

KYO could almost be classified as a tourist destination in itself. The team gets a lot of tourists and often has items couriered all over Australia (even Tasmania) for people who have travelled from interstate and want large items sent back home.

KYO also has wholesale customers who come down from all over Australia, such as Queensland just to buy up on

stock. The goods are unique, so customers know it’s worth travelling down.

People spend hours browsing the two sheds and the three outdoor areas. It takes quite a while to walk around.

The two owners travel to Japan, India and China to source the goods - they have also been to Morocco in the past and have imported goods from Mexico.

KYO’s cow hides are shipped from Argentina.

They go to each of Japan, India and China up to three times a year, for about two weeks at a time.

One of the weirdest pieces KYO has sold is probably the Japanese ski gondola from the snow slopes in Japan.

The name KYO (pronounced key-oh) comes from Kyoto in Japan and is just a shortened version of it.

Classes combine music-making and movement-based activities that children take part in alongside a parent, grandparent or other carer. It’s loads of fun.

An environment of learning INFINITE Dance Studios prides itself on creating an atmosphere that nurtures learning, individuality and self-confidence.

Director Fiona Luca-Kingsbury has created an atmosphere that encourages her students to strive for excellence in every class that they attend.

2016 marks 11 years at Infinite Dance Studios and Fiona could not be more proud of its achievements thus far.

Fiona reflects on their humble beginnings with pride and excitement: “From 33 students in 2006, we taught over 280 students each week in 2015.“ This year Infinite Studios is sending their first student, Joshua Hunt, to study at the Victoria College of the Arts Secondary School as a Year 8 student, an achievement they are incredibly proud of.

Next year is set to be even bigger and brighter, with an exceptional faculty of experienced professionals ensuring every students is exposed to quality tuition every class.

“My dream was to always create a studio that provides students with the experience and tuition they need to see them through to careers in the industry, and it is safe to say, we are doing just that,” Fiona said.

“From three years to 28 years, I want my dancers to be inspired each week, learn from industry professionals and be given opportunities and experiences to make choices about their dancing. No single dancer is the same and I hope that my diverse timetable and faculty cater for this.”

Studio 310 is Infinite’s very own, purpose-built premises for its dancers and families to enjoy each week.

Authority in sports physio IT’S fair to say that Peter Stanton is well qualified in his field.

The sports and spinal physiotherapist has worked at Geelong Football Club (2014 and 2015), Brisbane Lions Football Club (1999-2006, which included the Lions’ ’threepeat’ of premierships) and has worked at three Olympic Games, two Commonwealth Games, five World Athletics and Triathlon Championships and was at the Australian Institute of Sport for a decade.

That’s an impressive resume.

Peter has just opened his own physiotherapy practice at the Church Street end of Pakington Street in Geelong West.

“Geelong West and Newtown are just central to Geelong and what goes on here,“ he said.

“In the city, it’s too hard to get in and out with parking.

Geelong West and Pakington Street are just a hive of activity.“ Peter started his career at the AIS and travelled extensively.

“I started at the AIS, which

was terrific, because we did two months of each year overseas,“ he said. “I spent a lot of Australian winters overseas.“ What might be a good thing that you’re based in Canberra, but ironically Peter said he developed a love of the snow, which ultimately took him to some of the world’s best slopes.

Peter specialises in sports physio.

“Within sports physio, I’ve worked with a lot of running injuries,“ he said. “You need to get to the underlying problem, perhaps teach people to run differntly so they don’t get injured.“ Peter also works with people who have debilitating back problems. He also gets to the underlying cause of long-term spinal injuries. “It’s been a job I’ve been lucky to be involved in,“ he said.
