Second ‘last resort’ to withstand the most severe fire conditions, protecting people who are unable to leave the area from radiant heat and embers.

It will be activated if fire is threatening the community and there was a strong message on the day, that it is a last resort.

Minister Garrett said the facility was a vital addition to one of the state’s most fire-prone areas.

“The new station is a major boost to the brigade’s dedicated group of volunteer fire-fighters, while the Community Refuge provides an emergency shelter in the event of significant fires in the area,” she said.

“The refuge is a last resort option only,” Minister Garrett emphasised.

“The safest option is always to leave a high-risk bushfire area well before a fire front approaches.”

EMC Craig Lapsley said Victoria led the way in the provision of fire refuges and spoke of the collaboration between EMV, CFA and Yarra Ranges Council (YRC) in establishing the shire’s three Community Fire Refuges.

The Ferny Creek Refuge was opened two years ago.

He commended his team at EMV, members of the Refuge working group for Millgrove and the team from Yarra

Ranges Council saying it was not an easy process.

He spoke of the history, following the tragic bushfires of 2009 and the Bushfire Royal Commission with discussion ranging from whether to establish Refuges to what the message should be.

He said, ultimately the vision was “let’s champion them here in Yarra Ranges”.

On Sunday, 20 December, the local community will get to look over the new facility and enjoy a day of fun activities with and open day around the theme “Fire Station Celebration” from 10am to 2pm.

THE Upper Yarra has a second ‘last resort’ Community Fire Refuge, and Wesburn-Millgrove Fire Brigade has a modern, functional fire station, with the opening of a dual-purpose facility at Millgrove on Sunday.

The $1.6 million building, on the site of the previous fire station, was officially opened by Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett.

as Minister Garrett unveiled the official plaque before a gathering of around 100 people.

Brigade and community members were joined by federal and state MPs, Yarra Ranges Council and CFA representatives, neighbouring brigade captains and representatives of Emergency Management Victoria, DELWP, SES, the police, builders, Hay Constructions, and the Millgrove Fire Refuge Community Working Group.

The Upper Yarra, recognised as the highest rating bushfire-prone area in Victoria, has another fire refuge at East Warburton.

Market fee waiver plea

By KATH GANNAWAY THE committee that runs the Yarra Junction community markets have been told they can make a case at council as to why they should not have to pay a $270 annual leasing fee.

The Upper Yarra Community Market Inc. (UYCMI) holds markets on the council-owned car park adjacent to the football ground twice a month and has been asked to sign a Leasing and Licencing Agreement and pay the $270 fee.

The committee appealed for a waiver of the fee, saying they are a volunteer, notfor-profit organisation and that all the stallholder fees go to support local community organisations and projects.

A petition signed by more than 1000 people was also presented in support of their case, but was deemed invalid on the basis that it did not meet the required format for a petition.

In a letter to Yarra Ranges CEO Glenn Patterson on 24 November, UYCMI president Pam Jagger and secretary Adele Paisely said the committee recognised the need for a formal agreement but disputed the necessity to pay a fee.

They said in the past 15 years, the market, which has been running for more than 30 years, had returned over $53,000 back to community groups including schools, sporting clubs, church groups, SES and CFA. “Council benefits from this as the com-

munity groups do not have to approach council directly for as much support,” they said.

They also said that since redesign of the car park by the council, the number of stalls they can have has been reduced to about 20.

Ms Paisely said the markets were a drawcard to the town for tourists.

“If we didn’t have the markets, people would just drive on to Warburton.”

She also questioned the policy of charging all markets on a one-size-fits-all basis, saying other markets with anything from 80 to 100 stalls pay the same fee.

Council’s director Environment and Engineering Mark Varmalis told the mail the insurance component of the fee covers the council’s liability as the owner of the land and the increased risk as a consequence of the use of the land as a market area.

“All markets using council facilities pay the same fee in line with the Leasing and Licencing Policy which, we believe, is an equitable approach for all community groups,” he said.

UYCMI have been advised that there is a process open to them should they wish to present an item at a council meeting, before the nine ward councillors.

Ms Paisely said the committee felt strongly that they were being penalised by the council rather than supported and would discuss whether they put their case before council.

School icon brings hope to Casey

By KATH GANNAWAY HODDLES Creek’s Connie Grogan was one of 56 Yarra Valley volunteers recognised in the Casey Community Volunteer Awards on 5 December.

Casey MP Tony Smith hosted the annual event which recognises those who donate time to their community.

He said members of schools, sporting groups, emergency services, environmental groups and support services were acknowledged on the day, some for decades of service to their communities.

Coincidentally, Connie’s award was, in part, for 56 years of service to Hoddles Creek Primary School.

She was nominated by the school which said she was an ‘HCPS icon’.

Her three children and two grandchildren attended the school where she has taught religious education for all those years.

She has mentored as part of the Kids Hope program for many years doing baking, reading and craft, made toffee apples for the fete, is a regular at Twilight Sports and a ‘stand by’ special visitor on grandparents' day.

Hoddles Creek Red Cross is also legendary with her knitting, cooking and preserving skills helping raise over $100,000 over the years.

And, as if all that ‘sweat’ isn’t enough, Connie has been a blood donor for 50 years.

Upper Yarra Valley Historical Society president Tom O’Meara was also recognised for his commitment to the society, the Upper Yarra Museum and other historical organisations.

Tom is president of the society, the museum and Outer Eastern Historical Society and chairperson of the Heritage Network.

Colleagues who nominated him said, Tom, a former school principal, had introduced many primary schools to the museum to gain a better understanding of their history and their heritage with amazing results.

“Often children return with their parents,” the nomination said.

It spoke of his success in obtaining grants and in driving events such as breakfast on the platform that caters for local business people.

Tom said he was surprised and pleased to receive the award but said he was just one of many people in the community doing all sorts of

“This is recognition for the whole team here,” he said.

“All of these groups, in their own small way, are contributing to the community at large, and I think that’s what drives us all,” Mr Smith said.

He said the Yarra Ranges was “blessed” by its volunteers and their sense of community spirit.

“Without our volunteers, our local community would cease to function,” he said.

Briefly Zero tolerance on burning off POLICE forces in the Yarra Valley are reminding people that fire restrictions are currently in effect, and any form of burning off will result in offenders facing court.

“When we get a colder day people are lighting fires which will result in a police attendance and court appearance,” Sgt Stewart Thompson of Healesville police said.

“We have a zero policy towards it because even these little fires can blow up into something uncontrollable this time of year.”

Warburton police also attended two separate incidents of people burning off during the fire restriction period.

Senior Constable Rob Firns at Warburton police station said there were heavy penalties for people caught lighting any type of fire during this time.

“Fines may apply and any person identified lighting a fire during the restrictions is going to be charged and referred to the courts,” he said.

Chemist broken into AT 4.30am on Saturday 12 December, a man was seen using a sledge hammer to smash open the doors and gain entry to the Seville Chemist.

The man gained access to the chemist and stole a small amount of cash and some prescription medication.

The man then made a getaway in a maroon coloured Ford sedan.

Police are asking for any information regarding the incident to be reported to Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit on 9739 2300.

DELIVERING high quality health services is an important task for any government.

When governments plan for these health services, there are great challenges and opportunities in how we can meet not only the needs of today but for tomorrow and into the future of our local communities.

That’s why I was pleased to have the chance of driving the first surveyor’s peg to launch construction of a new dialysis wing through the Healesville Hospital redevelopment.

When completed, the redeveloped Healesville Hospital will significantly increase access to a range of surgery, dialysis and community health services for communities in and around the Yarra Valley.

The project will establish a new six-chair renal dialysis clinic in Healesville for the first time, with space to expand and meet demand in the future.

It will also feature a 13-bed acute general medical ward, a new operating theatre and outpatient ambulatory consulting services, as well as an expansion of the existing Yarra Valley Community Health Service.

It is fantastic to see that a good deal of work has already been undertaken.

Although there are some disruptions to services while construction carries on, I know the redeveloped hospital will be an extra source of pride for our community.

All Victorians deserve health services that

they can not only rely on, but have access to.

One such health service is the Peter Mac Cancer Centre which has maintained a continued commitment to excellence, innovation and compassion treating cancer patients and assisting their families.

Peter Mac has grown from humble beginnings with just a handful of staff in a one-room clinic, to over 2500 staff at five sites across Victoria.

It operates with a mission, coming from the words of Sir Peter MacCallum, that “nothing but the best is good enough for the treatment of cancer”.

As a member of the previous State Coalition Government, I was proud to support a new Peter Mac Cancer Centre as part of the new Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Parkville.

However, the Andrews Labor Government’s decision to scrap 42 Peter Mac beds and four operating theatres has resulted in the loss of over $50 million in philanthropic donations, capital investment and sunk costs.

The public/private model for the new cancer centre is an innovative move that would see more people, no matter where they come from, receive the best treatment.

But now Peter Mac will not be able to provide for the extra 8000 patients per year that it could have were the project to go ahead as planned.

Providing the best possible health services for locals in the Yarra Valley and the rest of Victoria will always remain an important priority for the Coalition.

Finally, I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I look forward to all that can be achieved listening to, working with and supporting our community in 2016.

Hospital report is in

By JESSE GRAHAM THE culmination of a threeyear campaign was presented to almost 100 residents last week, with the Save Healesville Hospital Action Group (SHHAG) presenting its community-funded report.

On Thursday, 10 December, SHHAG held a meeting at Healesville’s Memo Hall, to present what they had dubbed The Options Paper - a consultant’s report on the services at the hospital.

For 90 minutes, SHHAG members Bruce Argyle, Jane Judd and Gayle Slater presented information from the document to the 98 attendees, along with chair Fiona McAllister and Health Outcomes International director, consultant Andrew Alderdice.

Ms McAllister said the meeting was held on the third anniversary of a community meeting which saw 300 people pack into the hall, with the action group forming as a result.

“As you’ll see tonight, sadly, our journey’s not over,” she said.

Mr Alderdice said the paper outlined a 13 per cent decline in admissions at the hospital between the 2009-'10 and 2013-'14 financial years, while the rates of residents from the Yarra Valley and surrounds visiting other hospitals in Victoria had increased.

The report cites a “significant” decline in women visiting the hospital, due to reductions in gynaecological, obstetric and paediatric services at the hospital, as well as ending birthing in 2012.

The speech and the paper drew attention to a number of procedures that Yarra Valley residents underwent - such as skin, tissue and breast procedures, eye disorders, ear, nose, mouth and throat - but which were either not offered or had seen a decline in Healesville.

Ms Judd said that surgical, ear, nose and throat, urological, gynaecological, ophthalmological, orthopaedic and plastic surgery specialists currently drove past Healesville to service Alexandra and Seymour, and suggested that a redeveloped surgical theatre at the Healesville Hospital could accommodate some of these services.

Responding to the Victorian Government’s Health 2040 Discussion Paper, which said services should follow the philosophy of “right care, right time, right place,” Mr Alderdice said services should be linked with community need.

He said that community responses to SHHAG’s community surveys saw 92 per cent of respondents preferring to have an operation or give birth in Healesville, rather than travelling for the services.

The paper also indicated that travel times to the nearest hospitals - Angliss, Maroondah and Box Hill - spanned 46-59 minutes on average.

“A summary of what the community is saying is, ‘If you provide an appropriate range of services in Healesville, we would use them as opposed to travel’,” Mr Alderdice said.

At the end of the meeting, a motion was put forward, demanding a written commitment from Eastern Health by 31 March to expand services delivered at the hospital in line with the paper, or else the community would then turn to the Victorian Government to make the case of shifting the hospital to a Small Rural Health Service.

However, Eastern Health’s chief of clinical and site operations in Yarra Ranges Lisa Lynch said the organisation was “not

in a position to comment”, as it had yet to formally receive the report.

“We look forward to receiving the report, taking the time to review it properly and discussing it with the Save Healesville Hospital Action Group,” she said.

“In the meantime, we remain confident that the redeveloped hospital and community health centre will deliver a range of services that meet the current and future needs of the Healesville and Yarra Ranges communities.”

FOR the third successive month Warburton’s rainfall has fallen far below average, with November providing only 55mm against the average of 117mm.

Warburton rainfall recorder, Keith Thomas has recorded a year-to-date total of only 985mm, again, far below our average of 1232mm.

Doug Armstrong in Hoddles Creek recorded 81mm over nine days for November against 97mm over 10 days in 2014. Year-to-date numbers were 988mm for 2015 against last year’s 1072mm.

Mr Armstrong said the long-term average rainfall for November was 106mm.

And, in Healesville, Alma Mitchell recorded 38.2mm over 13 days compared with 71.3mm over 11 days last year.

Mr Thomas said there is no doubt the drought conditions have affected Melbourne’s storage dams which now hold only 1,304,634 megalitres, which equates to 72 per cent of capacity.

Extra safe places named

By PETER DOUGLAS YARRA Ranges Shire will include an additional three Neighbourhood Safe Places (NSPs) during the present 2015-’16 fire danger period.

In addition to the 17 existing NSPs within the shire, further sites have been approved for the Seville Recreation Reserve (Northern Oval), Alexanders Car Park at Belgrave, and Gruyere Recreation Reserve.

From April to October, numerous potential sites were identified for as-

sessment, with Yarra Ranges Council approving the three sites unanimously at its 8 December meeting.

Cr Jim Child said the NSPs deserved council support. “This adds to the already valuable number of NSPs within the municipality and I think they’re three valuable recommendations and sites added to the list,� Cr Child said. “To the general public, they’re safe places. “If you enacted your fire plan, you may never need these places, but

they’re there if need be.�

Meanwhile, Cr Clarke said regular auditing was a good practice, as was adding to the list of NSPs. The annual audit follows the Bushfire Royal Commission, which recommended legislation that requires the CFA to certify NSPs against the CFA’s Fire Rating Criteria.

For the sites to be included in the list, strict criteria had to be met, which included passing rating criteria as well as access requirements.

Letters Murderers must prove remorse UNDER a State Coalition Government, convicted murderers will not be eligible for release on parole unless they have provided police with the details of where the body of their victim is located.

A convicted murderer cannot claim to be remorseful or rehabilitated if they are not prepared to give closure to the family and friends of their victims.

The $600 rent fee to the department is money for nothing, like stamp duty etc.

Charlie the cockatoo enjoys being part of the team at Healesville stock feed; he has told me so on many occasions.

Christmas can be a lonely time WITH Christmas around the corner, many of us will start preparing to welcome this special season, buying decorations, Christmas trees and food to celebrate with our loved ones.

It is easy to get caught up in the silly season, but it is important that we do not forget those less fortunate.

Christmas is a lonely time of the year for some young people.

It can increase feelings of sadness and social isolation among disaffected youth who lack a sense of belonging.

Most often, these young people will turn to alcohol and other drugs to minimise these negative feelings.

Substance abuse has a big impact on the user, their families and society.

It is responsible for increasing homelessness, mental illness, family breakdowns and thoughts of suicide or selfharm among young people.

For homeless youth, Christmas is a particularly difficult time because it reminds them of what they don’t have.

We try to make contact with these young people through our Street Walk program in the hopes of providing them with a safe place to stay.

Christmas at a refuge is still a lonely experience, but they are with people in the same situation.

As a community, we need to join together to combat these issues and ensure that young people are provided with adequate support.

This Christmas, I encourage everyone to consider vulnerable young people by donating or volunteering with a charity that helps the less fortunate.

Gift to shed

By JESSE GRAHAM A DONATION has helped the Yarra Glen and District Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Shed recover from two burglaries earlier this year, in the fifth donation from the Yarra Glen Grand Hotel.

On Sunday, 6 December, Grand Hotel owner Craig Barnett donated $1500 to the Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Shed at a Christmas function for the menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shed, which was held at the venue.

Vice-president Ross Ward said the donation would go towards the insurance excess costs the Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Shed incurred as a result of being burgled twice in October.

In the burglaries, power tools and a safe were stolen from the shed, though Mr Ward said security had since been â&#x20AC;&#x153;beefed-upâ&#x20AC;?. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve beefed-up security with alarms, cameras and what have you, and different locks and doors - thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all been taken care of,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Though the shed was still waiting for replacement tools, being organised by their insurance company, he said the group had been working on Christmas decorations for about 20 businesses in the town.

He said the donation was â&#x20AC;&#x153;very generousâ&#x20AC;?, and that the shed had been well-supported by the businesses and residents in town. â&#x20AC;&#x153;From the best of my understanding, the Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Shed as an organisation is very wellregarded in Yarra Glen by the traders and the Chamber of

Prizes worth thousands YARRA Ranges residents have shared in thousands of dollars in prizes, with winners drawn for the Mail’s All I Want for Christmas competition.

The competition required residents to spend a minimum of $10 at Healesville Walk, Monbulk Jewellers, Croydon Cinemas, The Jewel Box, Travellers Place or wherever a promotional poster was hung.

Over the course of the competition, more than 3500 entries came in - meaning more than $35,000 was spent at local businesses by entrants.

“It has its origins at the Living and Learning Centre in Healesville, but is a new shed for Badger Creek and district,” he said.

“We have 20 members and are currently setting up woodwork and metalwork areas, and hope for automotive in the future.

“We operate behind the Badger Creek Fire Brigade and work in partnership with the brigade.

“We also work in the local community and are part of the network of Men’s Sheds across Australia.”

by Candlelight last Sunday, 13 December, was a huge sucess, with great numbers turning out for the popular event at McKenzie Reserve. Guests were invited to bring chairs and blankets for the carols, which featured a great performance, among many others, from the Dixons Creek Primary School Choir. There were plenty of candles and glowsticks available, which added to the fun.

Help shape future town

By PETER DOUGLAS WHAT is your vision for the future of Healesville and nearby surrounds? Now is the time to put forward your ideas, as the community is being asked to help shape the town’s direction.

Yarra Ranges Council endorsed the draft Healesville Structure Plan at its Tuesday 8 December, meeting, with the draft plan available for community feedback.

The plan provides a framework to guide future development of the Healesville and surrounding areas, including Chum Creek and Badger Creek.

Important points include the development of key sites and improvement of public spaces, as well as exploring options around car parking.

The plan aims to strengthen

the role of the town centre, as well as manage residential growth.

Cr Fiona McAlister said the draft plan had come a long way since more than 100 people attended the initial town meeting.

She said the community should consider providing input.

“The draft plan has been two years in the making to get to this point,” Cr McAlister said.

“I know structure plans are sometimes not that engaging, but many people have participated with what we have.”

Cr McAlister said key points included the balance between amenity development and bushfire risk, as well as what must happen in terms of minimising risk.

She also predicted volume

development would be another key point, with surveys suggesting 25 per cent wanted no development, while 50 per cent were content with predicted development.

Population projections, which were prepared for council, predicted the population of Healesville and surrounds will increase by 1327 to 2036, which would bring the total population to 10962.

This would require an additional 717 dwellings.

After a six-week community consultation period, which begins in February, a report will be presented to council with the community feedback and recommended changes.

The 10 best films of 2015

By SETH HYNES THIS year has been another banner for foreign and independent productions and a good if middling year for mainstream blockbusters, albeit with some surprise stand-outs.

Here are my picks for the 10 best films of 2015.

10. Wild Tales - A collection of diverse Spanish-Argentinian short films linked by the theme of vengeance, this is a must-see for anyone who loves sociallyconscious, pitch-black dark comedy.

9. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night - As sombre and emotionally authentic as it is weird and violent, this Iranian supernatural drama ingeniously frames vampirism, which is generally a very masculine monster trope, as a form of female empowerment. It might also be the best David Lynch movie that Lynch didn’t actually make.

8. Mad Max: Fury Road - A modern-day marvel of insane stunts and brutally beautiful

Celebrating the season in fine style

By JESSE GRAHAM HEALESVILLE residents are being called on to celebrate the holiday season together, with a street parade and Christmas party being held this Friday.

On Friday, 18 December, business members, residents and families are invited to attend the Healesville Christmas Festival at the Railway Station.

The evening will begin at 4.30pm, with a parade from Coronation Park down the main street, led by Santa Claus.

Healesville Chamber of Commerce member and event organiser Stewart Thomson said the Lions Club of Healesville, Rotary Club of Healesville and the chamber would announce the winner of the Deck the Heales-ville Christmas Decoration Competition on the corner of Church Street and main street, before the parade continued down to the railway station.

Mr Thomson said that a giant slide, mechanical bull, velcro walls, horizontal bungee, pony

rides and a petting zoo, among other attractions, would be at the station grounds for children to enjoy in a two-hour event.

He said the event was chosen to coincide with the last school day of the year, and that the rides would be free of charge though Healesville CFA would be holding a sausage sizzle and Rotary would host a hamburger barbecue as a fund-raiser.

“Everyone’s busy at this time of the year, so it’s good, coinciding with the last day of school, to be able to go down and celebrate with friends, pass on best wishes and go off on your own way to have your private family functions,” Mr Thomson said.

“What it is, is fantastic amusements and attractions which are available for all 3777 community members to attend free of charge.”

Mr Thomson said the event would be the third Christmas party held by the chamber, and that he hoped this year’s would be the best yet.

“We’ve united as groups in a common cause, to give the community the best festival ever,” he said.

“Get out and support your community, wave the flag and support the CFA ... give support back to those who support you, and that will help us try to ensure the success of this event moving forward.”

The festival will wind up at 7pm.

The Deck the Heales-ville competition required businesses and organisations in town to decorate their windows with a Christmas theme that will be illuminated until 10.30pm each night.

Though the winners will be announced on Friday, the entrants are required to keep their displays up until Boxing Day, meaning residents can walk through at night to view some of the creative displays.

Without hyperbole, the best science fiction film of the current decade.

Walter’s touch with the daffodils

By KATH GANNAWAY WALTER Lawrence wore many hats in his work for others, but one of his most colourful was yellow.

Walter’s home-grown bunches of daffodils graced the Daffodil Day stalls at Healesville for many years.

His fields of gold on Schoolhouse Road, Woori Yallock, were planted over the years from two bulbs his father brought home.

“They just kept on multiplying and multiplying so we just decided to start donating them to help with Daffodil Day,” he told the Mail back in 2012.

Walter passed away on 2 September this year.

He was born in Ringwood on 18 May, 1929, the third child and eldest

son of Ernest and Mary Lawrence’s 10 children.

Walter started school at Wonga Park and started at Woori Yallock State School in 1938 when the family moved to the Yarra Valley.

He was 14 when he left school to work in the forestry with his father.

He worked in the industry for seven and a half years and was proficient at his work and for 26 years with the Board of Works as a plant operator.

His wife, of 56 years, Rita, said he loved machinery. He learned to handle a variety of equipment and machinery, skills he honed and developed throughout his life.

Walter and Rita (nee Hair) were married at the Clear Lake Methodist Church on 8 April 1959 and they

raised their three children, Wally Margaret and John on the family farm. Sadly, Wally died in a motorcycle accident at just 22 years of age.

Walter loved children and was delighted when he became a grandfather 17 years ago, and again two years later.

He adored his two grand-daughters, Riannon and Vanessa.

Rita said Walter gave his life to the Lord when he was 17.

Four years later, he went to Bible college (Melbourne Bible Institute) and over the years was involved in various missions and supported individual missionaries.

His 50 years as an elder in the Woori Yallock Presbyterian Church was celebrated in July this year.

“The word of God was of paramount importance to Walter,” Rita said.

He believed in faith in action and was very community-minded.

Throughout his life he had been involved in the local fire brigade, school council, Red Cross, the Yarra Junction Hospital Committee, LinC where he was a volunteer driver and delivered food parcels and bread.

And, of course, there was his annual donation of daffodils to support the anti-cancer cause.

“He would help wherever he saw the need and where his skills could be used,” Rita said.

Walter had major surgery in July from which he recovered well, but passed away suddenly two months later.

Jim, a man of honour

By KATH GANNAWAY JIM Crow arrived in Healesville two days before Christmas, 1959, and joined the ranks of “the local coppers” as a senior constable.

For the next 56 years, Healesville was home, family, work and community - home base for a fulfilling, funny and fruitful life.

Jim died, aged 87 on 21 November and was farewelled with a CFA honour guard at Le Pine, Lilydale, on Friday, 27 November.

The final salute followed a celebration of his life that honoured him as a man who lived for his family and his community, was respected and loved by many and made every minute count.

He was the third child of William and Elizabeth Crow’s nine children and grew up in Hastings.

He joined the police force in 1955 as part of the recruitment for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games and was recruited again when Jan Kiteley synchronised her trips to the local post office to coincide with Jim’s police mail duties.

They were married on 27 March, 1965, at the Presbyterian Church in Healesville and celebrated at the local RSL. Bryce, who sadly died last year, was born in 1968, and Ashley, four years later.

After Bryce arrived Jim and Jan bought the Cosy Corner Milk Bar and it was not at all unusual for Jim to be serving customers either side of his police shifts. He loved the interaction with customers, and they loved it too.

After leaving the police force he started a driving school where he taught generations of Healesville teenagers. He also drove buses for McKenzies.

His volunteer work started as soon as he hit town. Jim had been a member of the Crib Point Fire Brigade as a young man and joined Healesville brigade where he served as Captain from 1984 to 1987 and was made a Life Member.

He was also an active member of the Masonic Lodge and the Lions Club of Healesville.

Heart-felt and humourous tributes were delivered by representatives of each of those organisations.

Ashley spoke on behalf of the family. He said everyone had a story to tell about his dad.

He said the conversations would start with “Are you Jim Crow’s son?” and go on from there.

“Your Dad was a good copper”, or “Jim taught me to drive”, or “Jim told me this joke once”, or “Don’t his legs ever get cold”, “I remember when that car was new” or “How’s your dad’s bloody cockatoo going?”

“That made Bryce and I very proud,” he said.

Jim and Bryce were best of mates and Jim was always there to help out with the businesses - in the early days the courier service and later with the stockfeeds business.

Ashley shared stories of holidays at Bonnie Doon, towing the caravan behind the HQ, boating and socialising. Jim and Jan loved to socialise and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

It was at Bonnie Doon that Jim acquired ‘Popeye’ and they were constant companions.

Jim was a regular and welcome guest at the Army School of Health, where he found a receptive audience for his latest yarns, and gathered a few new ones as well.

Ashley said his father had been a strong role model who always set a good example, in particular with his sense of community and attitude to helping other people.

He said his often shared motto “Treat others the way you would want to be treated and you won’t go far wrong”, was something that he lived

Passing on values such as a firm

handshake, a strong work ethic, the importance of having fun and helping others and of making time to make memories were among the many beautiful memories they shared.

Mitchell said his one big memory was being able to have his Pop for a

driving instructor - something he didn’t get to do with his dad, Bryce.

“He was a great man to everyone and he will be sadly missed by all,” Georgia said.

There was a collective nod.

Grounds for lofty aims

By PETER DOUGLAS HEALESVILLE is primed to host an AFL preseason clash in the near future, according to local football officials.

After the success of the Essendon Football Club’s three-day training camp at the Don Road Sporting Complex, and the pristine condition of the surface, some believe the town can expect further major football events.

Healesville Football Netball Club president, Felix Fraraccio, said the positive response from Bomber officials provided further support for toplevel events, including AFL preseason or Under 18s TAC Cup matches.

Mr Fraraccio said the Bombers were lured to the ground due to its MCG-like size and quality surface.

“Essendon officials didn’t believe how big and pristine the ground is, but were very impressed when they got here,” he said.

“The ground is in fabulous condition.

The town should be proud, the curators and (Yarra Ranges) Shire ensure it’s in top shape.”

Mr Fraraccio said the success of the open training session on Wednesday 9 December, which attracted well over

However, he believed they would be the difference next season as the club aims to go one better after finishing runner-up to Wandin.

Tables turn for bowlers WARBURTON BOWLS WARBURTON 1 (Division 2 Section 4) played at home against Montmorency on Saturday, keen to avenge their first round loss away and won 89 to 74. They continued their unbeaten run at home despite disappointingly losing 2 rinks. Full credit to Montmorency who competed well. Rink scores were as follows: P. Caneva 26/13; B. Woods 21/15; J. Brookes 20/22 and A. Donohue 22/24.

Warburton 2 (Division 4 - Section5) played Mooroolbark away going down in another tight contest 65 to 75. Rink scores: M. Brennan 19/17; S. Mahoney 17/15; G. Wynd 14/20 and S. Freestone 15/23. The highlight being the cool head from the skipper, Mick Brennan, as he pulled off some wonderful shots to ensure victory for his rink.

Warburton 3 played Cardinia Waters at home this week and won comfortably 61 to 28. R. Newing’s rink continued to win well 45/5 with C. Kercher’s rink fighting hard to go down 16/23.

Cream rises to top

By CHRIS ANDERSON WITH just a one day-game separating the players and a well earned Christmas break, the wheat is separating from the chaff, as the best teams in the Yarra Valley are starting to break free from the competition’s strugglers.

Woori Yallock returned to full strength this round with a comprehensive victory over Seville.

After compiling an impressive 5/286 on day one, the home side were on top from the first ball bowled on day two.

Classy allrounder Simon Young made short work of the visitors in the first innings as Seville had no answers to his brilliance.

Young’s impressive figures of 8/26 ensured the Blues would be bundled out for a limp 62.

With the taste of blood, Woori Yallock asked the visitors to follow-on in a bid to secure outright points and consolidate their position at the top of the heap.

Just like in the first innings, the Tigers threw everything at an inexperienced batting line-up, and times looked as though they would break through for the outright victory.

Jackson Wright (3/26) looked to have set the ball in motion with an exciting hatrick, while he was ably supported by Dan Mock (2/5) in the second innings.

Eventually, the Blues found enough resistance through youngsters Liam McGookin (28) and Harrison Byrne (27*) to avoid the embarrassment of losing outright.

Things don’t get much easier for Seville as they host Warburton-Millgrove in the final round of the year.

Wins are now becoming a must if they are to feature in finals action.

Meanwhile, Woori Yallock face a Mount Evelyn side which finds itself in a similar position to Seville.

Warburton-Millgrove are starting to build momentum on their season, through some consistent, and disciplined, play with both bat and ball.

The Burras outlasted a gallant Hoddles Creek to solidify their top-two position.

Hoddles Creek, defending a small total of 150, made the most of the early going, while some early wickets gave the visitors a slight sniff of victory.

Unfortunately for the Wombats, Warburton-Millgrove have a long batting line-up, with plenty of experience in the middle-order.

This can make them extremely hard to break down, even if you think you’re on top.

Healesville were the big winners of the round, as they turned things around in day two to clinch an unlikely victory against Yarra Junction.

Ploughing through nearly 33 overs of relentless bowling, and aided by some equally brilliant bowling from Dylan Moore (2/58), Fry was able to lead his side to a remarkable victory against the odds.

Yarra Junction weren’t going to lay down easily and some late-order fight had them within a whisker of outlasting the bowlers.

But the resistance was to come to an end in the 74th over, with the home side a mere 10 runs short of their victory target in a classic contest from two equally matched teams.

Healesville have a perfect opportunity, against a struggling Hoddles Creek, to cement their position in the top four.

The winner of the Bag-day playoff was Pat Bowd, with a sensational Nett 62. Pat is an all-round nice bloke who is very popular at the club. It was a truly popular result.

Hot on his heels was that young sensation, Django Ward - all 12 years of him. He recently competed in the final of the Victorian Primary Schools championships at Karingal Golf Club.

He came 21st , which is a great effort, as there were 3000 starters.

On Wednesday, he had a Nett 63 to be just edged out by Pat. They finished well ahead of the chasingpack and deserve a pat-on-the-back for making the final.

Pat won the Stableford daily comp with 43 points, Django came

2nd with 42. Balls, on the day, went down to 36 only. Much of this great scoring is due to the fantastic condition of the course. The N.T.Ps on the day went to Pat on the 9th, Lynda Dickson (10th) and A.J. on the 15th.
