Marching to war ANZAC Day this year was a special celebration for the nation - 100 years since the landing at Gallopoli but this week it will be Warwick’s turn to remember its own special part in the war and the war effort.

Friday marks 100 years since a group of men marched from Warwick to Brisbane to enlist in the army.

Twenty-eight Warwick men started that march with their ranks swelling to 125 by the time they finished the 239 kilometre journey a couple of weeks later.

The residents of the Southern Downs will travel back in time to 1915 to remember the 125 men who marched took part in the March of the Dungarees to enlist in the World War I. Beginning at 5.30pm at Warwick Town Hall, the Demonstration of Support event, hosted by renowned poet Marco Gliori, is aimed at capturing the energy and community support shown to farewell the local men on the eve of their departure

100 years ago.

Southern Downs Regional Council’s Mayor Peter Blundell said the re-enactment parade will be led by the 11th Lighthorse Warwick-Montrose Troop, Warwick City Brass Band and Warwick Thistle Pipe Band.

“After the parade, we’ve got a full schedule of entertainment inside the Town Hall starting from 7pm,” the Mayor said.

“Guests will be able to enjoy musical performances, storytelling and poetry, as well as light refreshments including homemade Anzac biscuits baked by the Queensland Country Women’s Association.

“It’s wonderful to see so many members of our community involved in the event, as well as some well-known celebrities such as Norma O’Hara Murphy who will perform her new song dedicated to the March of the Dungarees. “‘The March of Dungarees Demonstration of Support was a significant event in Warwick and one we should be very proud of.

“This occasion helps us to keep the memories alive and share the story with younger generations,” the Mayor said.

Tickets to the event are free but limited.

As part of the commemorations South East Queenslanders were also asked to contribute to commemorative walls that are to be erected in Warwick, Stanthorpe and Allora libraries today as part of the 100th anniversary.

The commemorative walls aim to showcase the Anzac values of courage, integrity, duty, mate-ship, compassion, resilience, and teamwork demonstrated by the Anzacs.

Southern Downs Regional Council’s Manager Community Services Sheila Stebbings said the organising committee worked with Warwick, Stanthorpe and Allora libraries to display memorabilia and contributions relating to the 1915 march.

“We’ve have been calling for contributions of (replica) memorabilia relating to the march, such as letters, photographs or other documents,” she said.

On Saturday morning, 140 young men and women, aged from 13 to 18, from the Australian Army Cadets will embark on an epic eightday journey, walking from Warwick to Brisbane to commemorate the men recruited as part of the original 1915 March of the Dungarees.

In an attempt to combat waning recruitment numbers for World War I a recruitment initiative known as ‘snowball marches’ was instigated.

In south-east Queensland it was called March of the Dungarees - the only march of its kind in Queensland.

The 2015 re-enactment march will be a rolling event, with marchers, including a contingent from Stanthorpe and Warwick, acting almost as a relay to complete the 239 kilometre journey in eight-days with the longest distance covered in one day being 42 kilometres.

Getting up to speed PROSPECTIVE council election candidates are being urged to attend information sessions being run in Warwick and Stanthorpe next week.

In the lead-up to the March 2016 local government elections, Southern Downs Regional Council will hold the information sessions for prospective candidates in Stanthorpe on 14 December and in Warwick the following evening, 15 December.

Southern Downs Regional Council’s chief executive officer David Keenan said the sessions would be an opportunity for council staff to present an overview of the organisation to those residents who are considering running for office in the

upcoming 2016 local government elections.

“Whilst some information for prospective candidates can be sourced from council’s recent 2014/2015 annual report, some of this information is already dated, such as the organisational structure,” he said.

“The organisational overview will cover some key operational areas including: Financial status, including identification of major sources of funding such as rates and financial assistance grants; Organisational structure and staffing; Major projects and capital works;

times and portfolio sys· Meeting tem; responsibilities such as · Council local and state-controlled roads and;

· Services delivered by the council.

The 2016 Local Government Election Candidate Information Sessions will be held at Stanthorpe Civic Centre Supper Room from 6pm to 7pm on Monday 14 December and Warwick Town Hall from 6pm to 7pm on Tuesday 15 December.

“The intent of the sessions is to provide prospective candidates with an insight into the specific operations and responsibilities of Southern Downs Regional Council.

“However, they are not intended to provide a platform for political debate or raising of single issues,” Mr Keenan said.

The information sessions will be presented by the chief executive officer and senior staff from Southern Downs Regional Council and two representatives from the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning will also be present.

DOES our mayor realise if this toxic waste dump goes ahead at Oman Ama this waste will travel through Warwick, therefore the fire and all other emergency people involved in cleaning up should an accident occur in the Southern Downs Shire will all have to be trained to handle this situation.

Also are people going to buy livestock at the saleyards should they come from this toxic area?

So Mr Mayor put on your thinking cap and please think again! Don’t tell people it’s not a problem to you, as most people think you are short-sighted. You will probably be looking towards some handout from the government for not raising your hand against this proposal. So please think of all the young children who are going to grow up in this very fertile area. This area produces some of the best sheep, cattle and other crops. So please think past your nose and support the local farmers!

Truth bomb OK, let’s get a few facts out. The council hatched a baby call Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). I have no doubt what a great strategy they perceived that to be. I received info of the Memorandum of Understanding to be improvised from the same time they sought 24/7 operations for GrainX. Now every time, that with great effort we, the residents of Allora seek assistance for our now, sorry state of survival in this town, we are handed a full stop, namely council’s quotation of a MoU. Full marks for tactics to promote bucks into their coffers, but not a drop for consideration of a body of people, who I must add, the consequences will be dynamic for, if sincere unqualified help is not given. I said to their environment minister, my blows would only hit the air if I did complain to their “committee”, he did not deny it.

Unforgivable AS ONE of the victims of GrainX, I received a letter from SDRC, in essence they said their council committee meetings are to remain confidential because of “the commercial in confidence information in relation to GrainX” that raises questions in my mind anyway! Then they confessed we’ve been living in these insufferable conditions due to an unprecedented busy harvest.

What great foresight they had when they in advance gave GrainX ability to do 24/7. So that they successfully have blown our lives into a blur of unforgivable dust and noise. It also included their proposal to noise test inside our houses. Well they can do that for me, outside where I want to be.

Continuation on of what is occurring here in Allora can only have serious consequences - just what is council blinded by?

Bad drivers WELL I have said on many occasions that this place is full of totally incompetent drivers. It seems that no-one can comprehend the rules on roundabouts. They insist on approaching the roundabout at full speed with no consideration that there just might be another vehicle entering before they actually get onto it. They have it in their empty head that if they are approaching

from the other vehicle's right that they have right of way. Wrong. Look at the sign, learn the rules and approach the roundabout at a safe speed. It’s not a chicane on a racetrack.

My next point is to the imbecile under the shopping centre who cannot look behind them when reversing. You were extremely lucky that I have a bulbar on my vehicle. It saved my vehicle from suffering any severe damage when you reversed into me at an unsafe reversing speed. Your wife tried to make out it was my fault because I was following too close. Ha. Again wrong. I was stopped at least a full vehicle length behind you. But just you and your wife think about this.

What if it was a child or an elderly person walking across behind you? Would you get out ranting like you did and accuse them for following you too close? Would you carry on and yell at them that they should not have been there?

I have a very important piece of advice for you. Give your licence up, if you have one, and don’t drive again. As you would not supply me with your details I can only assume that you don’t have a licence.

By the way, your incompetent driving and subsequent ranting is all on film.

Nothing changes THIS writer has come across an ancient poem that will bring a smile to the faces of those who are believers that nothing changes. This was published in the Warwick Argus, 20 June 1893.

Feel for the RV RE: council's decision to charge fees for Allora and Dalveen Camping and Water Reserve. One wonders how much lower council morality can get!

Blundell and Rees talking about the need to recoup the cost of on-site facilities is pure hypocrisy. The current council has done nothing in the way of providing facilities at Allora, the toilets; the old picnic seats and shelter are carry over from Allora Shire and the first year of the disastrous amalgamation with Warwick. Then there is the park itself - created by 15 years of untiring work by the late Eric Ireland.

An ex-serviceman in not particularly good health, but he had determination to create something of value for the community and that park is the attraction for grey nomads in particular to want to stop there. If the council was unhappy with those who stay longer perhaps “phantom” Rees [his Allora name] could quietly check the site occasionally, have a yarn to some of the campers and see just how much they contribute to the local economy.

Despite all the hard work by Eric Ireland the council under the Bellingham stewardship could not even rise to the occasion and name the park (or part thereof) the Eric Ireland legacy and now we have Blundell and company trying to squeeze the last drop from the community to overcome their never-ending debt spiral!

It is well-known among the RV fraternity that by and large the Southern Downs is not RV friendly and this new move at Allora and Dalveen will confirm it.

THE Southern Downs needs to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of the creation of wards; now is the time to think what this can mean to electors. It is a chance for electors to

grab control over their councillors. The councillors would now become only answerable to the electors of their ward, and more control can be exerted over the councillors; so if the majority of a ward formally or informally direct their representative to follow a certain direction; and if they don’t you get rid of them at the next elections.

Under the current system most councillors are voted in from towns where the majority of people live. Their little loyalty is to those more populated areas. I live in Tenterfield Shire where our two ward councillors have gone against local views and opted to put up our rates by 84 per cent over seven years. They with luck will be pushed out at the next elections. There is also a corruption side issue to a large and singular ward; that is the risk of gangster control; and believe me it happens.

Campaign to target backpacker safety

Survivor status THE early detection of prostate cancer was the hot topic in Warwick this week, with presentations to council staff by representatives from not-for-profit organisation ManUp! Australia.

One in five Australian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, according to ManUp! Australia co-founders and directors Brian and Jill Costello.

Mr and Mrs Costello spoke to more than 150 Southern Downs Regional Council staff at four presentations as part of the ManUp! Rural Education Program which they are rolling out across the state.

Jill Costello said ManUp! Australia was thrilled that Southern Downs Regional Council agreed to host the ManUp presentation for council staff.

“It was great to see such a significant turn-out of staff at the presentations and to be able to reinforce to them that no Australian man needs to die from prostate cancer – no one’s husband, brother, dad, son or mate,” Mrs Costello said.

The council’s chief executive officer David Keenan said that the council is one of the largest employers in the region, particularly of male staff, and welcomed the event.

“Council has a commitment to the health and wellbeing of our staff and the ManUp! presentation added another string to the council’s bow of staff health promotion initiatives,” he said.

“We established ManUp! because we’ve been down this road of prostate cancer and have seen a lot of sadness and loss,” prostate cancer survivor Brian Costello said.

“It simply does not need to be this way.

“The ManUp! Rural Education Program is a way that we can share knowledge and raise awareness among men and women about what the prostate is and the simple testing process available to men to keep it in check.

“Early detection is the key and the first step for men is to get a simple blood test to

measure the amount of PSA (Prostate Specific Antigens) in their blood, and then get the blood test done every year to track their PSA score.

“Early detection not only saves lives, it enables more treatment options and leads to better recovery outcomes. I’m living

proof of this,” said Mr Costello.

A PROGRAM aimed at addressing road safety issues for foreign backpacker has received a $9200 grant from the Queensland Government.

Southern Downs Regional Council’s Operation Stanthorpe Backpackers received the money under the Safer Queensland Community Grants program.

Mayor Peter Blundell said he was very pleased with the announcement, which supports the initiative of the Road Safety for Seasonal Workers and Backpackers Taskforce, which was established by the council in May this year.

“Operation Stanthorpe Backpackers provides for the installation of signage as part of an education program and is one of the key strategies identified by the taskforce to address the appalling overrepresentation of foreign backpackers in local road crashes,” he said.

“The extent of the issue was demonstrated to the taskforce by statistics provided by local police which that there were 18 crashes in the period 1 January to 25 April this year, with 44 per cent of those caused by backpackers.

“Failing to keep left was a prominent cause, and also failing to give way and not driving to conditions, and it’s fair to say that there are tensions between residents and backpackers due to many local incidents.

“This project will entail the installation of clear signage at key points across the Stanthorpe

district targeting, in particular, the need to drive on the left side of the road.”

The taskforce is comprised of several agencies including the council, Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Police Service, Stanthorpe Road Safety Committee, RACQ and representatives from businesses that employ and accommodate seasonal backpackers.

“Members of the taskforce certainly recognise the importance of working collaboratively to educate young backpackers about road safety as the number one priority,” Cr Blundell said.

“But we’re also aiming to promote the region to these young people as a safe place for them to visit and to work.

“International backpackers are important to our region as they provide an able work force that assists local growers address local labour shortages, as well as generating and spending money in our communities.

“We want them to be able to enjoy their time in our region and drive safely on our roads.

“Operation Stanthorpe Backpackers is one way that we hope to achieve this.

“It’s great that the value of this project has been recognised through the Safer Queensland Community grant, and I extend my thanks to the taskforce for its continuing commitment to improving backpacker road safety.”

THE skateboarders and scooter-riders flew, and the Woodenbong Skate Park and Outdoor Gym was officially opened on Saturday 28 November.

Woodenbong Progress Association’s Project officer Carey Andrews was full of praise for the new area.

“This facility is amazing for the Woodenbong community and surrounding communities and is being regularly used by locals and visitors alike,” Carey said.

“It is truly an asset to be proud of.

“In 2015 more than 15,000 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer,” she said.

“One in eight Queensland women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and of those 90 per cent will have no family history of the illness,” she said.

“That’s why we encourage all women aged 40 and over to have a free breast screen every two years, and also be sure to carry out regular breast checks.

Art bursts into life, from youth

By TANIA PHILLIPS WARWICK Art Gallery will install its much anticipated youth exhibition this week.

Seventy-three entries were received from young artists ranging in age from six to 23 years old.

Visitors to the gallery through the summer school holiday period will get to experience a display of many different styles of art including drawing, photography, painting, sculpture and film made by the region’s youth.

Gallery director Karina Devine said the exhibition was inspired by another exhibition held at the gallery earlier this year.

“There were a significant number of excellent artworks entered into our Southern Downs Artist Exhibition at the beginning of the year that were from younger members of our community,” Ms Devine said.

“We felt that it was time that the gallery offered a platform for our young artists to get exhibition experience.

“We wanted this exhibition to nurture young local talent and it has been wonderful just meeting all of the entrants when they have delivered their work to the gallery.

“We are thrilled by the number of entries and the range and quality of their work.”

The gallery will present all entrants with participation certificates as well as offering several cash encouragement awards.

The Burst exhibition also provided an extra opportunity for one young local artist who showed potential and motivation to pursue a creative career.

This year the gallery offered its Foyer exhibition space to local photographer Ceilidh Bishop.

Ceilidh has a captivating ability to find beauty and meaning in small details or scenes that most people would walk right past.

Her exhibition is called Eureka which represents the exciting moment when she finds and captures an unexpected image.

A stunning collaborative animated film will also be premiered during Burst.

And moving into the new year each of the libraries will have plenty of activities from creating yarn dolls and paper fans and cards at Stanthorpe to treasure hunts and colouring competitions at Allora and Warwick.

Market is a festive feast ’TIS the season for The Seasonal Feast Food, Wine and Farmers Markets to begin in Warwick’s Leslie Park on Saturday.

From 8am, visitors can browse the seasonal, regional produce and say hello to the people who produce some of the Southern Downs’s tastiest fruit, vegetables and eggs among other delicious produce.

“Seasonal Feast will offer a great range of local products including free-range eggs from the O’Dea family’s Kelvin Falls Farm and Felicity Philp of Allora will have her artisan salts and feelgood Friendship Food range,” market co-ordinator Mel Forbes said.

The monthly market will give locals the opportunity to take home the freshest, justpicked-from-the-farm produce as well as olives, oils, condiments and flour - there really will be something to suit every tastebud she said.

The Seasonal Feast Markets are an opportunity for locals to not only take home the flavours of the region but to also to connect with the growers and producers in order to find out the story behind the food.

Drought relief for farmers

By TANIA PHILLIPS COTTON growers in Queensland have been urged to access electricity charge relief available in drought-affected Queensland shires.

Cotton Australia’s general manager Michael Murray says Ergon Energy provides drought relief on fixed charges associated with electricity accounts used for farming and irrigation.

“Drought-declared Queensland shires include the Central Highlands, Banana, Western Downs, Balonne, Toowoomba and Goondiwindi, which together represent the

majority of the state’s cottongrowing regions,” Mr Murray says.

“Cotton Australia is aware that some growers in these regions have been doing it tough because of the drought.”

“Ergon Energy offers drought relief for growers in these districts, but it is not automatic, so affected growers need to apply to the provider,” which can be done by visiting the Ergon Energy website - www.ergon.com.au Growers in the Goondiwindi region serviced by Essential Energy should visit this website,

instead: www.dews.qld.gov.au/ electricity/rebates/drought “Cotton Australia also recommends that growers check if their Ergon Energy tariff structure is the most appropriate for their farming operations and, given the current drought conditions, query whether tariff 66 is the best for them. If not, they should talk to Ergon about potentially moving to another tariff,” Mr Murray says.

“Alternatively, talk to your local Cotton Australia regional manager for more advice on electricity tariffs or our energy efficiency initiatives.”

History of hospitality THE Darling Downs Hotel, or the Sandy Creek Pub to anyone who goes there, is just 10 kilometres outside Warwick on the Sandy Creek Road.

An historical hotel - the perfect stop to relax and unwind on wide verandahs or the rustic beer garden - it is an important part of the local community.

It is a country pub with meals available on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch - a place of country hospitality and cold drinks where publican Gary is always happy to have a chat.

“The year 2015 has been another great year for the Darling Downs Hotel at Sandy Creek

near Warwick,” Gary said.

“Highlights of the year have included The Sandy Creek Pig Races once again raising good money for RACQ Care Flight and The Wheatvale School, The Footy Tipping Competition with the winner taking away $1000 of a total prize pool of $2750, and the last public performance of Wayne’s Balls in The Pocket Trick.

“The pub will be saying goodbye to 2015 and welcome to 2016 with a night of live entertainment featuring Warwick’s own Butch Collier.

“Butch will provide his cross-section of songs which are loved by all from 8pm on

New Year’s Eve through till the new year.

“Food will be provided during the early part of the night in the form of well-valued steak, ham and chicken burgers.

“Cold beer, spirits, wine and soft drinks will be on sale to help patrons celebrate.

“All patrons are invited to come along and celebrate the new year on Thursday 31 December.”

Gary invites everyone to come along, have a chat, enjoy a snack, play a game of pool or try their luck on one of the gaming machines and have a good time on New Year’s Eve. The casual dining area.

What’s On Mentals here for milestone

By TANIA PHILLIPS HAVING blessed stages, radio airwaves, record books, playlists, TV screens and award nights for close to 40 years - Mental As Anything are today proud to announce a new chapter in their story.

The Mentals, who head to Warwick RSL next week, boast 12 albums between 1979 and 2009 and can proudly call themselves art pop pioneers blending left-of-centre lyricism, blueeyed soul and rock into a distinctively Australian context, providing chart success and mainstream appeal.

Their contribution to the Australian music landscape was formally recognised in 2009 with their induction into the ARIA Hall Of Fame.

Closing in on their 40th Anniversary in 2017 - Mental As Anything- they have announced the release of a new single ‘Shake Off Your Sandals’ - released recently under a new partnership with Universal Music Australia.

The new deal covers both their cherished back catalogue and new material, according to Greedy Smith.

“Martin Plaza and I are excited Universal are re-launching the Mentals across the physical / digital divide,” he said. “We are pumped to release five of our most important studio albums in a 5CD set. This coincides with our first new recordings in many years.

“In the studio with producer engi-

neer Steve James, we will pump out a new single every five months.

In total, Mental As Anything boast a nigh-unparalleled 20 ARIA Top 40 singles in Australia, spanning The Nips Are Getting Bigger (#16, 1979) to Mr Natural (#27, 1995).

BEFORE you say Bah-Humbug to Christmas why not take a little time out for the Warwick Community Theatre group’s production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

The group, which has more than 20 actors now, only formed four months ago and will make their debut performance this weekend.

Photographer Terry West was on hand to check out the cast going through their final paces last week, and came back with a load of pictures and full of praise.

The show will open on Friday at 7pm at St Mark’s Parish hall on Grafton Street; shows will also be held on Saturday 12 December at 7pm and Sunday 13 December at 1pm.

Hot and wet December

By TERRY WEST AFTER the last few weeks of hot weather and storms, Mother Nature brought some relief in the way of cooler temperatures. These won’t last though, and the average through December is showing around 30 to 35 degrees Celsius.

Even though the El Nino is still very active, it has been offset by a higher-than-usual Indian Ocean Sea Surface temperature.

The October sea surface temperature was the highest for any month on record and this has allowed rain and storms to move into the eastern parts of the country.

It is forecast that there will be average rainfall throughout December and into the early parts of next year.

During December rainfall from the tropics is forecast in and around these dates 17 December

to 21 December, 21 December to 25 December, 8 January to 12 January.

These events will likely be more coastal than inland.

The forecast says there will be cold front events moving from the south and southwest in and around 12 December to 16 December, 18 December to 22 December and 4 January to 8 January.

The cold fronts from the southwest and south are the systems that will bring storms to the region throughout the month. Any storms on these dates have the potential to produce hail, wind and heavy, widespread rain.

To wrap up, December is likely to be wetter and warmer than average across southeast Queensland and northeast NSW, parts of the interior of Qld.

The highest civic honour for Ken Poulsen ON Australia Day 2015, Ken Poulsen was overwhelmed after being announced Tenterfield’s Citizen of the Year.

Ken’s long association with the Tenterfield Lions Club prompted his fellow Club members to put forward Ken’s name in recognition of his dedication in carrying out many activities for the Tenterfield community on behalf of the Lions Club.

I AM pleased to report that I survived my recent trip to Fiji and more importantly my colleagues survived my assistance as a TA and general dog’s body. The high school of Naiyala now has ample running water for its needs and that of the local village, thanks to the efforts of the Stanthorpe Rotary Club.

Back enjoying the simple pleasures of reliable hot running water and the availability of cold beverages after a hard day, I am looking forward to the start of the Test series against the Windies.

The heady days of the ’80s and ’90s are etched in cricket folklore, and while this West Indian side is not expected to show much fight we might be surprised.

Many of us will recall marveling at that terrifying stare of Curtly Ambrose when he powered in to bowl. That same stare is now being cast over the current West Indian touring party and the man himself, who is their bowling consultant is apparently none too happy with the side’s embarrassing performance recently.

The once-fiercesome paceman believes the current crop of players have taken heed of his advice. I read where he jokingly said, “Well, I am bigger than most of them so they have to."

Plenty of opposition batsmen from the halcyon days of the West Indies cricket would understand exactly what that means.

In truth, World Cricket needs the Windies - they may not ever return to those great days, but let’s hope they surprise us with some of that Caribbean spirit we all love.

After struggling to catch snippets of the Adelaide Day/Night Test and washing it down with warm beverages; I for one will be enjoying whatever this Test brings - from the comfort of my lounge chair which will not be too far from the mandatory cold drink.

- Casey FIVE West Indian players to keep your eye on:Captain Jason Holder - As captain of this side surely he has the toughest job in World Cricket.

Is there a player in world cricket who has a tougher job than the West Indies captain? The second youngest Windies captain he is the 13th man to hold the job since 2000, He leads what many rate as the most dysfunctional team in world cricket but does have the backing of the great Sir Vivian Richards.

A bowler by trade, he is also talented with the bat and will no doubt be asked to launch several rescue missions in the lower order. A thoughtful off-field manner belies a tenacious fighter.

Kraigg Brathwaite - another youngster from Barbados Made his first-class debut aged 16 and was selected in the Test side at 18. An old-school opener who places a very high regard on his wicket.

The third youngest West Indian to score a double century, behind George Headley and Sir Garfield Sobers - lofty company indeed.

Darren Bravo - Bats left-handed, in much the same mould as Brian Lara. Moves the same, has the same flourish of the bat. Not quite at Lara’s lofty heights but not bad. A Test average of 41 says Bravo clearly belongs in the international arena.

Kemar Roach - made a name for himself in Australia in 2009 when he forced Ricky Ponting to retire hurt after striking him with a 146 km/h thunderbolt. Has not quite developed as many anticipated, but has 122 wickets at 28. Capable of reaching the high 140s when he is on song.

Jerome Taylor - One player who comes into this series with confidence. The Jamaican speedster claimed a career-best 6-47 against Australia in Kingston this year but received little support from his fellow bowlers. Debuted as an 18-yearold in 2003 but has seldom been a regular in the Windies XI.

TEXAS SUCCESS ALL roads head to Texas this weekend for the Texas Cup race meeting. The annual race meeting swells the town numbers each year and the Cup this year has attracted 13 nominations.

Local trainer Rod Hilton will be hoping Casino Prince who was successful in a 1350 metre race at Doomben in August can step up and keep the Cup in town on Saturday.

Hilton who trains on the Texas track has horses nominated in four of the five events on the card.

The annual meeting is another example of the strength and importance of country racing and comes at a time when the industry is cloaked in uncertainty and turmoil.

The Queensland Government has just released the Racing Queensland’s Tracking Towards Sustainability report, which, when implemented, is likely to see substantial cuts to prizemoney in the state. Major stakeholders however see very little “Sustainability” in what the report has to offer.

To what extent our local race clubs will be really affected is yet to be announced.

President of the Stanthorpe Jockey Club Chips Brunckhorst said when contacted that he felt confident that clubs such as Stanthorpe and Texas who operate only one successful meeting a year would not be axed.

“We have received nothing official from Racing Queensland, but if you are to believe what has been released we could be facing some cuts in prizemoney.” Mr Brunckhorst said, adding that at a time when Racing Victoria and NSW were announcing increases in prizemoney it was a disappointing trend.

“Cuts in prizemoney even in city racing have a flow-on effect throughout the industry.”

Opposition leader and Member for Southern Downs Lawrenece Springborg has slammed the proposed changes, which will see funding for the popular and successful Showcase, Celebrate and Sustain Country Race Series scrapped. This series provided a real incentive for owners and trainers to bring gallopers to meetings like Warwick, Texas, Goondiwindi and Stanthorpe.

The report is just another slap in the face for an industry that is the third largest in the state.

With the recent reshuffle of the Labor Government cabinet, racing is now faced with a new Racing Minister, who, by her own admission, knows nothing of the industry. Any wonder owners, trainers, jockeys, breeders and punters lack confidence in the future of racing in our state.

With the Magic Millions sale just around the corner, local breeders have expressed their concerns at what effect these recent announcements

will have on the sale results.

For the time being though, a big crowd is expected in Texas. The Cup day meeting will showcase all that is good and positive about country racing which can be the lifeblood of the community and contribute in a very positive way to local economies.

KING RULES RUMBLE LAURIE King took out last week's Red Rooster Rumble at the Warwick Golf Club. King headed a good field of 27 players, returning a fine score of 24 points. After a countback, Brian Davidson (20 points) was declared the runner-up was declared the runner. Balls in the rundown went to the usual suspects, Ross Kingston, Geoff Hinze, Alan Mathews and Brett Donovan all with 20 points.

Nev Heard (19 points) picked up the last ball.

Hayden McNichol earned himself two cooked

chooks for his shots at five and seven and Geoff Hinze took home dinner for his shot at the ninth.

This week Rumblers will be playing the back nine.

COLLET COLLECTS MONTHLY MEDAL THE Warwick Real Estate Monthly Medal was decided last Saturday. In Division One Peter Collett notched up a win with a score of nett 66.

Don Stewart carded a nett 64 in Second Division to earn a well-deserved win. New member Michael Hoskins finished in second place with a score of nett 66.

“Leftie” Shane McKenzie had the best gross with a nice score of 70 off the clubs. The best gross was the club's best left hander Shane McKenzie with a nice score of 70 off the clubs. Rhys Farrell one of the club’s improving juniors had the best gross junior score (82).

The winners of the Medal of Medallist were also decided on Saturday. Dion Phillips took out Division One and Peter Millard Division Two. Collecting balls in the run down were Gary Hankinson, Geoff Hinze, Brendon Jones and Jay Roberts (68), Eamon Cockram, Mal Galloway, Doug Rickert and Al Thornton (69).

The nearest the pins went to Gordon Kerr, Jay Roberts, Peter Collett, Trevor Rock, Brendon Jones and Greg Sellick. The club appreciates the continued support of Neil Carney and Warwick Real Estate.

Congratulations to Brendon Jones on winning the shootout on Sunday. It was this third win in the event. It is understood this may be a first.

Runner-up was Greg Sellick.

Andrew Thompson and Jamie Purcell finished the round tied in equal first place.

Thompson was declared the winner after a countback and Simon Blair finished in third spot.

Thompson was also the only player to pick up pins during the round. He was successful at three and nine while Purcell held the Approach shot.

It was Thompson's second win in the Monthly Medal in 2015 and that was enough to earn him the Medal of Medals honour for 2015.

This Saturday it’s Hamper Day (4BBB) at the ‘Garra, so come along and enjoy the day.

LOCKE A WINNER MARG Locke is a regular player at Sporters each Sunday and last week she scored a good win in the weekly competition finishing ahead of runner-up Angelo Maugeri who also finished the round with the best gross. Run-downs went to Mark Lynam and Rod Steele. The Pin Shot on the 12th went to Paul Byrnes and Wattsy took the Pro Pin. Marg Locke added to a winning day, walking away with a meat tray. Paul Byrnes collected the remaining meat tray.

A reminder to all Sporters - Sunday is a big day - the annual Christmas party. It is an early start A sausage sizzle barbecue at 7am followed by the obligatory game of golf and then back to the clubhouse for a barbecue lunch and more drinks and a presentation or two. Partners are welcome - Out of bed and on the course early this weekend. Sausage sizzle brekky, then a game of golf.

As the holiday season approaches fast, only the Summit Bowls Club has become party central. Social bowls were played last Saturday, and only a handful of bowlers turned out after Friday night’s Christmas party.

Andy McGlashan and Rob Parker proved no match for Connor Parker and Keith Mungall defeated 25 - 10. The score line in the remaining game favoured the pairing of Brian Brown and Eliseo Zamprogno. They won their game against Attilio Zamprogno and Quinton Stanley 21-13.

The club’s Christmas party and early bowls was well supported with a turnout of over 80 people.

The club also hosted the Tractor Club’s festive night, and on Sunday the Lions Club of Stanthorpe celebrated their Christmas party with a luncheon and barefoot bowls day at the Bowls Club.

OVER 40S GAME CANCELLED THE annual Over 40s game against the Queensland Cricketers Club X11 has been cancelled. The visitors have been unable to raise a team.

DOUBLE HEADER FOR WANDERERS AND VALLEYS WANDERERS and Valleys padded up for backto-back games last weekend in Stanthorpe.

On Friday night on the CF White Oval Valleys proved too strong in the shorter Twenty/20 format played under lights.

Batting first, Wanderers made a good start and had posted 100 runs for the loss of only two wickets at the 15 over mark. A strong bowling performance from the Valley’s attack spearheaded by Anthony Marino restricted Wanderers in the final five overs and they were only able to add 21 runs

to the total. Adrian Hill did best with the bat, top scoring with 52 runs.

Valleys looked to be on their way to an easy win, but gave their supporters a few anxious moments after they also lost quick wickets after cruising to 100. In the end, Valleys proved too strong passing the required total in the 17th over with two wickets in hand.

In Saturday’s 40 over game, the result was reversed. Wanderers stocks were bolstered with the return to the side of Jamie Carnell. Several weeks out of the game did not appear to have any ill-effects on Carnell’s game, and he notched up 43 runs in a solid partnership alongside Lyndon McGrath (52). Wanderers eventually set their opponents a target of 178. It was not a bad score after some tight bowling from Wanderers early in the innings saw Valleys battle to put runs on the board.

Curtis Allen and Alistair Middleton were the best of the Valleys bowlers.

Valleys struggled from the outset in their run chase. Damian Anderson was the best of the Valleys batsmen, falling on 47 just shy of a half century as wickets tumbled around him. Wanderers Lyndon McGrath backed up his good batting performance to finish with five wickets for a miserly 15 runs as Valleys crumbled to be all out for 121 in only the 27th over. The comprehensive win was just the shot in the arm Wanderers needed and as well as the two points for their win they also picked up a bonus point to put them ahead of Valleys on the rankings table.

SOUTHS TOP THE TABLE SOUTHS sit at the top of the Stanthorpe Cricket table after they upset rivals RSL last weekend.

Souths Ben Staley was all class with the bat. In a match-winning performance, Staley finished not

out 163 as his side posted a total of 267. Staley led the way and found plenty of support from Danny Folkers (69) and youngster Jordan Lanza (23) who is quickly gaining a reputation as a solid batsman.

RSL captain Luke Brady led the run chase and the game was in the balance until his dismissal for 103. Souths were able to dismiss RSL for 233.

Despite only playing seven games Souths lead the field on the ladder three points clear of RSL who have also only played seven games. Wanderers have played nine games and are in third position on 17 points while Valleys have only 14 points but have only played six games. Tenterfield are languishing at the bottom of the table on four points.

SUCCESS HOURS IN THE MAKING WARWICK student Zac Catterson reaped the rewards of hours of athletics training after clinching three medals at the recent Australian All Schools Athletics Championships. Catterson threw a personal best of 47.56m in the final of the javelin competition to win gold and the title of national champion. He also won a bronze medal in the shot put and silver in the discus competition. The three-day carnival features events for students aged under 14, under 16 and under 18 providing athletes with the opportunity to qualify for the IAAF World Junior Championships and introduces students to the rigours of an international standard of competition.

GOOD BAD OR EXTRAORDINARY THE Warwick fixture game between Inglewood and Sovereign Animals on Saturday raised more questions than answers and has cricket followers scratching their heads - was it an extraordinary performance or a shocker of a wicket or an ordinary performance from both sides. Whichever, it was an amazing game.

Batting first in the Slade Park wicket, Inglewood was dismissed for only 21 runs. Yes 21 runs. Caleb King took six wickets for three runs as spectators scrambled for the record books.

Glen Doyle backed up the performance with figures of 4/18.

Inglewood bowler Ted Callaghan had scorers and supporters hunting for those record books not long after when, in an impressive performance, took seven wickets for only 10 runs as Animals slumped to be all out for only 18 runs. There was no repeat of the score lines on Sunday as Maryvale posted a win over Colts at Slade.
