By ERIN SOMERVILLE UPGRADES to Albury City Airport are set for take-off, after the project secured $3.29 million in New South Wales funding for vital infrastructure.

The funding will help fuel AlburyCity’s $4.7 million project to upgrade the airport and increase visitor capacity through an expansion of arrival halls, baggage carousels, and the departure lounge, adding an extra 1000 square metres to the terminal floor area.

Further developments will include terminal upgrades, apron and runway improvements, investment in airport

emergency services, lighting upgrades, and other vital works to accommodate more and larger aircraft, and to improve safety and services.

AlburyCity is expecting to foot the remaining $1.41 million for the project.

This work is expected to help relieve congestion and time delays, mainly in the arrivals area during peak periods.

Albury City Airport sees about 250,000 passengers and 7500 flights a year.

Acting Albury mayor Cr David Thurley has welcomed the news.

“This is great news for Albury Airport and for our whole region,” he said.

“This work is about improving the comfort and experience of passengers, stimulating the market to attract more visitors and providing better infrastructure to service a growing region.”

The Albury airport project is among 17 successful projects in the state to receive funding made available from the NSW Government’s Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund.

Member for Albury Greg Aplin said the funding announcement was an investment in the Albury region that would create jobs, stimulate business

and tourism, and allow the airport to operate at a higher capacity to accommodate future growth.

“Albury airport was built in the 1930s and is one of only two airports in the Murray tourism region coping with congestion at times and often operating at peak capacity,” Mr Aplin said.

“This will bring a range of benefits for the local economy, including less passenger congestion, capacity for more visitors and a better visitor experience.”

Minister for Regional Development, Skills and Small Business John Barilaro said the project was important

in bringing visitors to the region.

“By funding regional airport infrastructure we’re making a long-term investment to improve services for residents and to support airports with the greatest capacity to increase visitor numbers to regional NSW.” A further 10 projects as part of the airport upgrades are under review for further funding.

A final assessment of the project is expected to be completed in 2016.

AlburyCity will consult with all stakeholders, but anticipates work would start in late 2016 and be finished in late 2017 or early 2018.

Group wrapped in result LET Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue (AWAR) gift wrap your presents this year and help raise funds to assist animals that have been taken to the pound, surrendered or rescued.

AWAR is a devoted group of volunteers who look after unwanted dogs, puppies, cats and kittens and aims to educate the community about responsible pet ownership.

The team at AWAR have set up pop-up shops at West End Plaza and Lavington Square and are offering to wrap your gifts this Christmas up until 24 December. The funds raised will go towards assisting animals in need in the Albury Wodonga area and beyond.

AWAR committee member Lorraine Webb said veterinary fees are quite expensive and sometimes it's difficult when animals need quite a bit of work done to them.

“We have a lot of animals that come into our care and need to be operated on or looked into a bit more,” Ms Webb said.

“Unless we fund-raise, we can’t pay the bill.

“We’ve got to desex them before any owners can take them and then there’s costs in vaccinating them.

“Some even have to be retrained

if they have behaviour problems.”

Ms Webb said people often bought pets for Christmas without consulting whether it’ll be a good fit in their particular home.

“Sometimes the car or dog will end up being the wrong kind of pet for the family for reasons that they might not be able to afford the upkeep,” she said.

AWAR offers people a place to surrender their dog or cat if they are unable to keep them. Ms Webb said it was a much better alternative than putting them down or letting them stray.

AWAR president Terri Westblade said the gift wrapping was their biggest fund-raiser for the year and encouraged anyone who wanted to support the initiative to join up as a volunteer.

Last year they raised $10,000 which was their biggest fund-raiser and this year they were hoping to beat that.

Ms Westblade said the AWAR was always looking out for new members to foster the animals.

“We are hoping to get ourselves out there to people who may not have seen us last year and who are interested in getting on board,” she said.

Quad biking can prove crippling

By ERIN SOMERVILLE THE call for tighter safety restrictions on quad bikes has been echoed by Albury Wodonga Health emergency department director Biswadev Mitra, who has seen a string of local injuries relating to the vehicle.

In the past 12 months, 10 people have presented to the Albury Wodonga Health emergency department with injuries after falling from, or rolling, a quad bike.

Many of the victims are aged between 40-50 years old, and sustained the injury while riding on a private property.

They often present with limb injuries after a fall, or head and neck injuries if the bike has rolled.

Dr Mitra also sees more critical quad bike-related injuries streaming in from across the state of Victoria when he regularly takes up work at The Alfred hospital in Melbourne.

He has thrown his support behind NSW’s Deputy State Coroner Sharon Freund’s recent recommendations to improve quad bike safety and reduce the number of deaths, following her investigation into a series of fatal quad bike accidents in the past decade.

“I completely agree (there needs to be regulations),” he said.

“They are a motorised form of transport that go quite fast, and cause significant injury.”

While Dr Mitra said 10 trauma injuries at Albury Wodonga Health in a year wasn’t overly significant, there were often many related minor injuries that come through emergency departments which aren’t recorded under quad bike injury data.

“My main concern is enforcing the restrictions will be very difficult.”

“They are most commonly used on private property where the quality of roads is not the same as public roads.

“Anything on private property is very

difficult to enforce, if possible at all.

“At the end of the day, it’s public awareness and letting quad bike users know about the risks of the quad bike.”

Dr Mitra has seen quad bike-related injuries, such as collisions with sheds and even cattle, that could have been prevented by employing common sense and small steps to improve safety, such as reducing speed, riding on stable ground, and wearing a helmet.

Don’t be lonely for Christmas lunch

By MONIQUE KUZEFF NO-ONE should feel alone on Christmas Day whether they are single, a couple or a family and that’s why volunteers have organised a free festive lunch on Christmas Day for anyone who’d like to come along.

The Christmas lunch will be held at Mirambeena Community Centre on Friday 25 December and will kick off at 11.30am for a noon serving.

The volunteers have also organised transportation to the venue if it is required.

Volunteer Sue King said anyone can come along for the fun and festive lunch to celebrate Christmas.

“Whether you are homeless, alone or struggling financially we encourage you to come,” Ms King said.

“Families, couples or people on their own, we want to create a fun and non-judgemental atmosphere so no one has to be left out on Christmas Day.” The event is not affiliated with any organisation, instead the idea came from a bunch of volunteers who wanted to provide a special gift to the community.

Ms King said she was grateful for the generous businesses which helped organisers with the event.

“AlburyCity got on board and allowed us to use the venue,” she said.

“And the Liquor Accord and Active Lifestyle Estates have provided some funds to help with our purchases.”

Border resident Wilma France, who has been attending similar

Christmas Day lunches in Wodonga over the past nine years, said she was pleased to have an opportunity to attend one in Albury this year.

“It’ll make it easier for me to come along this year,” Wilma said.

“I have no transport so it’s great they pick you up.”

Wilma said she used to spend Christmas Day with her son but when he passed away from diabetes related causes she started attending the lunches.

“My younger son used to come home for Christmas and usually stayed a couple days,” she said.

“So, rather than sitting at home, I decided to come along and surround myself with others.

“In the past it’s been such a great atmosphere and the volunteers provided great service.”

Although booking is essential, Wilma said no one was ever turned away if they rocked up on the day.

She described past lunches consisting of hot turkey, ham and vegetables.

Pudding was offered as the sweets and there was ongoing entertainment throughout the course of the event.

“They put on a very good lunch and they had volunteers at each table who looked after everyone.

“The older ones didn’t have to line up or wait in queues but instead they got served.”

OVER $2 million has been directed to Tallangatta to attract more tourism as part of a $5 million Federal cash splash for Indi community projects.

The Destination Tallangatta project will receive over $2.6 million as part of round two of the Australian Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund to help boost local jobs and improve community infrastructure.

The funding will be used to spur on the $5.3 million Destination Tallangatta project that aims to revitalise the town, including upgrading the main street area, the lakefront and the holiday park, and connecting to the rail trail.

Tim’s untimely death mourned TRIBUTES have flooded in across Albury over the past week as the city says goodbye to well-known business leader and SS&A Club CEO Tim Levesque.

Mr Levesque’s life ended at 9am on Wednesday morning when his family decided to turn off his life-support after he sustained significant head injuries following a fall down a staircase at the Albion Hotel on Tuesday morning.

The 45-year-old was much loved by his wife Kym, and children Michaela, 21, Thomas, 16, Noah, 14, and Lilly, 10, and late son Riley.

The Levesque family have paid tribute to the beloved husband, father, and community leader.

“We are devastated to lose both a loving husband and beautiful dad,” the statement read.

“We thank the board and staff of the SS&A Club for their overwhelming support and kindness.

“We would also like to thank the wonderful critical care staff at the Albury Base Hospital who took such special care of Tim and us during this tragic time.

“Tim was an incredibly strong, inspiring, beautiful man, who we will be eternally proud of.”

President of SS&A Eddie Dunlop has also paid tribute to the CEO. “We are so incredibly sad to lose Tim,” he said.

“Our thoughts remain with his wife Kym, their children and extended family.

“His family always came first - he was so proud of them.

Tributes have poured in for Tim Levesque 1970-2015.

“He planned to go to his eldest daughter Michaela’s graduation later in the month.

“He wasn’t a work colleague as such, he was a friend.

“He was the boss of this club, but over the six-year period I’ve been with him we spoke daily, two to three times a day.

“He always kept me informed of where the club was at.

“He was incredibly proud of his staff - every one of them.

“We have all grown and learnt from him.

“What he and the club did for the community was wonderful.

“He was passionate about helping families.

“He committed $20,000 for three years for Upper Murray Family Care and was the driving force behind donating $30,000 for the next four years for the children’s ward at the new Regional Cancer Centre - he had lost a son Riley through cancer.”

Mr Dunlop also acknowledged Mr Levesque’s vision and efforts to see the club debt free by 2020 as a credit to his legacy.

The Albury Liquor Accord has paid tribute to Mr Levesque.

“On behalf of the Albury Liquor Accord, I would like to express our sincere condolences to Tim’s family and staff from the SS&A Club on this tragic loss,” the chairwoman of the Albury Liquor Accord Jodie Tiernan said.

“The hotel industry has lost one of the best.”

Albury MP Greg Aplin has also expressed his sympathies following the tragic accident.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mr Tim Levesque,” he said.

“I have known and worked with Tim over many years, during his period with the Muwala Waterski Club and the SS&A Club.

“Tim has been a high achiever in the club industry and within the local community.

“My deepest sympathies go to Tim’s wife and children, his family and work colleagues.

“He will be greatly missed across our whole community.”

Mr Levesque is listed as an organ donor.

From eyesore to artwork

By MONIQUE KUZEFF OFTEN littered by graffiti, the small lane just off Townsend Street has now been decorated with watercolour artworks from young local artist Erin Macdonald.

The lane, next to West End Plaza and opposite the Reject Shop, was seen as a common place for tagging and AlburyCity Council received a large number of complaints from the community.

Erin, 18, was thrilled to have her HSC watercolour artwork selected to be displayed in public. Her artwork was photographed onto high gloss paper and mounted on the lane wall.

“It’s a big step certainly from just mucking around at home - it’s a good feeling,” she said.

“I developed a taste for watercolour through trial and error and found how fun it could be.”

Erin, who originally started off as a life drawer at the National Art School, said she got her inspiration from the differences of the people she has observed.

“Although everyone is unique and different in their own ways,

there is a single thread that connects us all,” she said.

“I originally sketched people down the street and got the general figures of everyone and realised that they were all quite different and unique.

“The loose watercolour represents the freedom and expression we have in our appearance and gender, yet the continual succession of lines shows we are all connected to one another, no matter what our background, story or gender.”

AlburyCity Acting Mayor David Thurley said the mural was a great initiative that aimed to prevent people from vandalising the lane with graffiti.

“There seems to be some unwritten code of conduct that you don’t destroy someone else’s work of art,” Mr Thurley said.

“When you put up art like this it deters people from doing graffiti and it just brightens up a dull place.”

Real estate agent LJ Colquhoun Dixon who oversees the property that the artwork is displayed on was supportive of AlburyCity’s initiative and helped by liaising with the property owner.

Pair charged over bashing

By ERIN SOMERVILLE THE Border community has played a large role in helping catch two men believed responsible for bashing a homeless man in a Wodonga lane off High Street on Friday 27 November.

Wodonga police released footage last week of two men in a taxi believed to be responsible for the assault, which resulted in the victim being hospitalised

with severe facial injuries.

About 7.15pm on Tuesday 1 December, the two males shown in the footage turned themselves in at the Wodonga Police Station and were arrested and interviewed without incident.

A 41-year-old Wodonga man was charged with three offences, including recklessly causing serious injury and was bailed to appear at the Wodon-

ga Magistrates’ Court on 1 March next year. A 39-year-old Wodonga man is assisting police with inquiries.

Police have thanked the public for their help with the incident.

“We had an incredibly large response from the community who assisted in identifying the two persons of interest,” Wodonga Detective Senior Constable Tristan Purss said.

Mental health drains businesses

Big and bright in the night THE 40th Wodonga Carols by Candlelight is set to be a special event this year as it returns to its home location at Willow Park for 2015.

To mark the 40th milestone, the event on Sunday 20 December, will be streamed live to the internet by Brassbanned.com in addition to the regular 1494 2AY broadcast to ensure those who can’t make it to Willow Park can still enjoy the festive cheer.

The traditional program will again be performed to candlelight, and include 25 singers leading the program of 25 carols, all supported by a combined 60-voice choir from Sing Australia, New Life Chapel and local primary schools.

The musical event guarantees to be a highlight of the festive season, with the 40-piece Wodonga Brass band making sure the night is remembered by all who attend.

The event is a great nursery for helping young local talent gain confidence and learn new skills, and this year the crowd will welcome nine performers who will be leading Carols at Wodonga for the first time.

An Apex barbecue and other food providers will be available, and pre-carols entertainment will be provided by the Murray Con Big Band, and the Wodonga Primary School Choir from 6pm, as people relax, and even enjoy a picnic as they wait for the main event at 7pm.

The program will be broadcast live from 7.30pm on 1494 2AY and streamed on brassbanned.com, with 2AY’s Sandra Moon named as the evening’s host.

The event is presented by Wodonga Brass, with support from the City of Wodonga, Hume Bank, Regional Imaging, Riverside Estates, Bing Lee, Wodonga Real Estate, Wodonga Plaza, PGC Security, Barlens Hire and 1494 2AY. Admission is free with proceeds from candle sales and donations going to Albury Wodonga Health’s Community Rehabilitation Centre.

Parking on the adjacent grounds will be organised by the SES.

GATEWAY Health has been presented a donation of $2500

by Murray-Riverina NSW Business Chambers through their partnership with Albury and Hume Bank which will go towards supporting those with mental health issues.

The donation was pulled together through the facilitation of a mental health stage show production called Carpe Diem that was offered to businesses throughout the community.

Over 100 people attended the two shows that were performed on the Border.

NSW Business Chamber Regional manager Ben Foley said when he approached the bigger businesses they didn’t seem to hesitate to get on board.

“We were pretty amazed at how the bigger organisations wanted to get involved initially straight away given the context of the topic being mental health,” Mr Foley said.

“A lot of employers whether it’s Woolworths or AlburyCity as a big group they bought multiple tickets and gave it out to their staff.

“We really weren’t sure of

how many people we’d have attend.

Mr Foley said mental health had cost businesses in excess of $10 billion dollars in the last 12 months alone due to a loss in employee productivity.

“We have an obligation to make sure that businesses are kept up to date with the latest issues that are impacting on them,” he said.

“Getting the mental health issue out there makes employers realise it’s a conversation that they can have with their staff instead of shy away.”

Mr Foley said mental health was one of the most significant issues confronting businesses today.

“Those that obtain a better understanding of what it is and how to identify it in the workplace are in a much better position to implement changes that reduce the impacts on their operations, while also supporting their number one asset, their people.”

Gateway Health, a cross border service, has been running two programs that are struggling for funding. Gateway Health CEO Leonard Peady

said the donation would go towards assisting the refugee community and young people in Albury.

“A lot of refugees in Albury Wodonga have lived in refugee camps and have experienced trauma and torture and a lot of the family members are looking after those that are quite affected by stress and mental health issues,” Mr Peady said.

“We are providing a program to support the carers because if they can be supported and cared for and understand what’s going on in their family then there’s much better outcomes.”

The donation will also spread to an early intervention prevention program that aims to identify young people who are in the early stages of experiencing issues.

“We are working with schools in Albury and getting referrals from teachers of students who they are concerned about,” he said.

“If you people can recognise when they are starting to experience issues and develop the skills to take steps to deal with it, it can have very good outcomes.”

Under fire, on terrorism

By ERIN SOMERVILLE INDEPENDENT Indi MP Cathy McGowan has been labelled ‘soft on terrorism’ by Immigration Minister Peter Dutton after she chose not to support a Bill that could see dual citizens involved in terrorism lose their Australian citizenship.

The Australian Citizenship Amendment (Allegiance to Australia) Bill 2015 had bipartisan support, but was not supported by the Greens and Ms McGowan.

Her stance has come under fire from the Coalition Government.

“Ms McGowan needs to explain to the people of Indi why she is soft on terrorism,” Minister Dutton said.

“Most Australians support the Coalition Government’s measures to do all it can to prevent terrorist activity in Australia and to stop those who commit terrorist acts overseas from coming back to Australia.

“That’s what this legislation aims to do, yet the Member for Indi does not think it is worth supporting.”

Ms McGowan defended her move following the criticism from Minister Dutton, and said she did not feel the Bill was strong or reliable enough.

Ms McGowan said the rule of law should be a paramount focus in Parliament.

“Our processes and procedures work to ensure that we have the highest possible standards of government and the best outcomes for the people of Australia,” she said.

“Retrospective laws make the law less certain and reliable, and a person who makes a decision based on what the law is today will be disadvantaged if the law is changed retrospectively.

“From my perspective, enacting a retrospective law weakens the rule of law and has the potential to lessen the level of confidence the people of Australia have in us as legislators.”

ALBURY’S Soden’s Hotel has been presented with an award for being the best family friendly hotel in the industry at the AHA 2015 National Awards for Excellence.

The event saw about 1000 people from businesses and communities throughout Australia attend the annual awards night at The Star ballroom in Sydney on Tuesday 1 December.

Mr Allan said the team at Soden’s was very pleased with their achievement.

Health service appoints temp CEO ALBURY Wodonga Health has announced Catherine O’Connell will be taking on the role as acting CEO when Sue O’Neill leaves the position on Friday.

Ms O’Connell currently works as the executive director of Clinical and Community Services at Albury Wodonga Health, has extensive experience in executive leadership and the management of a large regional health service.

Albury Wodonga Health board chairman Lou Lieberman announced the appointment on Monday.

“Her background in nursing and wide experience in senior managerial roles ensures that AWH will continue to be in safe hands”, Mr Lieberman said.

Mr Lieberman said Ms O’Connell had worked closely with outgoing CEO Sue O’Neill to help develop the recently approved strategic plan “Health without Borders”, and would be working towards improving patient care as part of her acting role.

The recruitment process for the new CEO is still ongoing.

By ERIN SOMERVILLE A GROUP of Santa Clauses found themselves a long way from the North Pole on Monday afternoon as they gave one of the most important gifts of the season at the Red Cross Albury Blood Donor Centre.

The Santas’ visit focused on the gift of giving, with the Albury Donor Centre still in need of more donors over the festive season.

A total of 70 donors are needed between 24 December and 3 January as the demand for blood continues but many regular donors roll down their sleeves for holidays.

During the Santas’ visit, the staff at Albury Donor Centre discovered the most common donors at Albury, and those guaranteed to be on the North Pole’s nice list, are named David, Michael, Peter,

John, Robert, Sarah, Jennifer, Jessica, Christine and Emily. But no matter your name, you’ll be welcome at Albury Donor Centre as the demand for blood over Christmas and New Year grows.

“Thousands of Australians will need blood this Christmas and New Year just to have the hope of spending those moments with friends and family,” said Blood Service spokeswoman Cathy Chapman.

“Cancer patients are the biggest users of donated blood and rely on platelets to make it through chemotherapy.

“The problem is platelets cannot be stockpiled, so we need a constant, fresh supply as anything collected by Christmas Day will have expired or run-out early next week.”

“Whether it’s because they don’t cope with the groups or are physically unable to be in those groups - this event supports kids with disabilities by giving them the opportunity to participate in smaller groups.”

Belvoir teacher Marg Kinnel said the swimathon benefits went further than just teaching the kids how to swim.

“It’s a combination of swimming and life skills,” Ms Kinnel said.

“The kids learn social skills, too, including how to get changed in the changeroom and how to mingle in the community.

KIDS from Belvoir Special School attended the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre (WSLC) on Thursday to help launch the YMCA Swimathon in line with International Day of People with Disability.

The launch was the first big talk of what will be Wodonga’s fourth annual swimathon event and aimed to encourage community members to save the date and register online for individual fundraisers.

The YMCA Swimathon is an annual event held at 60 YMCA managed pools across Australia. Last year supporters raised $339,000 that enabled around 4800 people with disabilities to learn to swim and to be safe around water. YMCA aims to raise $400,000 this year.

Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre raised over $6000 last year at the swimathon and has its individual target set at $8000 for next year's event, on 28 February.

The sports and leisure centre’s swimming lessons director Mandy Sawyer said Belvoir Special School benefited from last year's swimathon as the money raised helped fund swimming lessons for about 60 of the school's kids over two terms this year.

“Last year was our biggest year and was the first time we had done a little bit of a family fun day as well,” Ms Sawyer said.

“Next year we will have lanes dedicated to the swimathon but also other family involved activities including a jumping castle, barbecue, face-painting and an inflatable pool.”

Ms Sawyer said around 30 people attended the event last year, but mainly consisted of staff and families.

“We are hoping to get more members of the general public involved this time.

“The more we can get on board the more we can raise,” she said.

Fire ready with written plan YOU don’t have to live in the country to be at risk of fire. If you live near areas that have significant bush, forest, long grass, or coastal scrub, then you need to plan ahead for the fire season.

Why should I leave early?

Because fires can start and spread very quickly in some conditions, leaving early is by far the safest option for anyone in a high-risk bushfire area.

Many people have died trying to leave their homes at the last minute.

Even a fire that is kilometres away could be at your door in minutes. In certain conditions, embers can travel many kilometres in front of a fire and a grassfire can travel faster than you can run. Wind changes are unpredictable and can rapidly change the direction or size of a fire.

Driving in a bushfire is extremely dangerous, and potentially life threatening. A drive that would normally take five minutes could take two hours.

Road closures, traffic jams, collisions, smoke, fallen trees and embers are all real possibilities.

In a bushfire, people may be confused, disoriented and physically or psychologically stressed. In these conditions, making good decisions becomes very difficult.

What leaving early means Leaving early means being away from high-risk areas before there are any signs of fire.

In other words, leaving early is a precaution you take just in case there is a fire - because in some conditions, any fire that starts is likely to be uncontrollable.

Leaving early does not mean waiting for a warning or a siren. It does not mean waiting to see or smell smoke.

And it certainly does not mean waiting for a knock on the door.

“We replicate normal food that taste just like it would if it wasn’t made from special products and often people can’t even pick up on it.

“If you try my gluten free schnitzel I bet you’ll even say that it’s better than a normal schnitzel - that’s what we are trying to achieve here,” she said.

The cafe restaurant has four fryers - two are specifically used for gluten-free products and the other two used for gluten.

A lot of cafe restaurants do not understand the importance of having separate fryers when providing customers with gluten-free meals, according to Monica.

From pastas and risottos to lamb burgers and hamburgers, the friendly team at Monica’s Cafe and Restaurant is happy to help customers out if they’ve got particular requests or requirements.

Three unwise men get left in the manger THE NIGHT BEFORE MA15+ 101 minutes IF you’re looking for some special festive cheer this year, don’t count on The Night Before to deliver it.

Seth Rogen returns in his done-before bromance stoner flick, teaming up again with with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and bringing Anthony Mackie on board as they take a tired ride down a well-trodden road.

The film sees the friends since forever come to the end of their decade-long tradition of celebrating Christmas eve out on the town.

As Isaac prepares to become a first-time father, and Chris (Anthony Mackie) moves on with his athletics career, the friends realise that this will

be their final night out before Christmas.

With tickets to the elusive Nutcracker Ball- the holy grail of New York Christmas parties- in hand, the boys take a wayward trip that never seems to end to get to the ball.

After waiting the entire movie for the magical ball to be unveiled, it’s hugely anti-climatic and similar to any party that could be found in a hotel in Dean Street on a Saturday night. It’s Christmas guys! The audience wants- needs- more magic.

The script relies on belowthe-belt, sterotyped, and predictable jokes for the laughout-loud effect, and very little is new or fresh from any other Rogen stoner-flick you have seen since Pineapple Express (yes, even James Franco makes

an appearance. Surprised? Neither were we).

The highlight of the bromance film lies in the supporting females. Jillian Bell does a great job as Isaac’s wife Betsy, and Lizzy Caplan is a smash as Ethan’s ex-girlfriend Diana.

The stupidity of the film even makes Miley Cyrus, who rocks up at the end for a cameo at the Nutcracker Ball (okay, maybe something you won’t see in a Dean Street Hotel any Saturday soon), look like the most sensible person in the room.

The Night Before: not even the characters’ festive sweaters, the Rockefeller Christmas tree, and the fail-proof Christmas in snowy New York scenery put me in the holiday spirit this time. Flick over to the worn out Home Alone DVDs instead.

ALBURYCITY is delighted to announce that seasoned local performer John Walker will host this year’s Carols by Candlelight, which will return to its traditional home in QEII Square.

John is well known throughout the region as an actor, performer and a fun and entertaining master of ceremonies, particularly at high-profile corporate and charity events.

“We’re excited that John has agreed to front our wonderful Carols cast this year," AlburyCity acting mayor David Thurley said.

“He will bring some fun and frivolity to the show, but also recognise the importance of the annual event to the community as families gather to celebrate the spirit of Christmas in Albury.“ The talented cast will include local favourites Glenn Starr, Will Bonnici and Alexandra Nixon, along with some new unearthed talent, which musical director Paul Gibbs says never ceases to amaze him.

“Every year we find yet another crop of fine, young talent right on our doorstep and the creative team is excited to be working with them, particularly those who will debut this year," Mr Gibbs said.

An expanded Carols Gospel Choir will feature as well as the Carols Show Band and, of course, the man in the red suit will once again grace the carols stage.

ALBURY-WODONGA is bracing for an expensive summer with energy bills on the rise for two thirds of Victorian households.

Almost half (49 per cent) of Victorian households have experienced 'bill shock’ after their last energy bill was higher than expected, with almost two thirds of Victorian households reporting that their energy bills have increased over the past 12 months, the highest rate in Australia. Albury-Wodonga residents are encouraged to review their current energy contract to ensure they are on the most cost effective plan ahead of summer.

Energy comparison service iSelect today released the results of a national Galaxy Research study assessing the attitudes and behaviours of Australians towards energy affordability1.

The survey also found that a quarter of Victorian households are having to cut back on other areas in order to pay their energy bills with the survey suggesting around 145,000 Victorian households have been on a hardship program during the past 24 months.

Low income households and tenants are finding it most diffi-

cult to pay their energy bills and households with children are more likely to be cutting back in other areas to meet energy costs.

Laura Crowden, iSelect spokesperson, said it was concerning that nine per cent of Victorians have put their energy bills on credit cards despite being unable to pay off the balance at the end of the month while five per cent had gone into debt for more than a month due to energy bills.

Laura said with an aboveaverage summer forecast, it was likely many Albury-Wodonga households would continue to feel the heat when it comes to energy bills this summer.

“Most of us are prepared for large winter energy bills but higher than expected bills during summer can often take us by surprise," Laura said.

“Keeping air-conditioners running around the clock and the extra energy consumed by Albury-Wodonga kids at home using TVs, computers and aircon during the school holidays can result in summer energy bill shock."

Victorian households nominated the ability to pay energy bills in installments - which

helps avoid bill shock - as the most important factor apart from price when choosing an energy provider. Customer service and the ability to manage energy accounts online were also important to Victorian households.

When faced with a higher than expected energy bill, 18 per cent of Victorians have proactively switched plans or providers in the last 24 months in search of a better deal but an alarming 36 per cent have simply done nothing at all suggesting many Victorians are paying more than they need to.

Laura said while it was encouraging that 23 per cent of Victorians compared energy providers or plans in the last two years, not everyone had embraced the opportunities offered by increased retail energy competition.

“Millennials are more likely than baby boomers to use a comparison website to compare energy plans and providers while those in capital cities are twice as likely to shop around online for a better energy deal as regional Australians."

NEW research by Australia Post highlights the importance of home and contents insurance.

A new study by Australia Post reveals more than a third of people who have made a claim through their household insurance policy could not have afforded the cost of their claim without the help of insurance.

The study surveyed more than 1000 Australians with contents insurance. A quarter of all those surveyed said they had made a claim on their home and contents insurance in the last five years and 37 per cent who had made a claim said they could not have replaced what had been lost without the help of insurance.

In other findings: Some 26 per cent ranked major appliances as the most valuable possession in their homes, followed by furniture.

However, more personal items such as photos (36 per cent), digital devices (19 per cent), jewellery (15 per cent) and other sentimental items were what people would hate to lose most.

Older families and retirees, aged 50 to 69, are most likely to have contents insurance.

More women than men are responsible for decision-making about home and contents insurance (55 per cent to 45 percent).

Overall policy holders held a fairly positive attitude toward home and contents insurance with 86 per cent saying they would never consider not having it. A whopping 64 per cent believed having contents insurance gave peace of mind and 57 per cent said it was very impor-

tant for protecting their belongings.

A whopping 90 per cent were satisfied to extremely satisfied with their last home/contents claim experience.

“The study highlights the need for adequate home and contents insurance, especially in the case of a robbery or natural disasters. It could prove devastating”, Andrew Walduck executive general manager, Trusted eCommerce Services at Australia Post said.

“Unfortunately, insurance cannot replace some precious possessions such as photos, although those items identified in the research as the most valuable including major appliances and furniture are covered, offering peace of mind to policyholders.”

LIKE clearance rates are for auctions, the number of days a home is on the market is a key property indicator for private sales.

In the 12 months to 31 October, Yarrawonga in the state’s north east experienced one of the largest improvements in the median number of days on market.

The latest REIV data shows the number of days it took to sell a home in the popular Murray River location fell 43 days over the year to a median of 100 days. And the good news continued with 84 properties sold over the year, four times more than the same period last year.

Properties in the Gippsland town of Maffra were also on the market for consid-

erably less time in the 12 months to 31 October. The town recorded a 33.5 day drop in median days on market to 112 days, down from 145.5 for the same period last year.

Other regional towns recording significant drops in days on market were Benalla and Bairnsdale, falling 29 days and 22.5 days respectively. Homes in Benalla had a median of 97 days on market while Bairnsdale’s property market was even stronger with a median of 75 days.

The Surf Coast town of Jan Juc also experienced a solid decline in the median number of days on market, falling 21 days over the year to a median of 32 days - the second shortest period in regional Victoria.

Buyer interest in coastal locations was also evident in both Anglesea and Torquay. With a median of 86 days on market, homes in Anglesea sold 15 days faster than the same time last year.

Homes in Torquay also sold faster, falling eight days over the year to 31 October to a median of 55 days.

Meanwhile, Irymple in the state’s north west had regional Victoria’s shortest days on market with a median of just 30 days.

Nearby Mildura and Red Cliffs were also popular with buyers with medians of 34 and 35 days respectively.

Demand was also seen for homes in the Geelong suburb of Hamlyn Heights, where

the median number of days on market fell 18 days over the year to 33 days.

Other Geelong suburbs recording some of country Victoria’s shortest days on market were Belmont (39 days), Corio (43 days), Grovedale (46 days) and Highton (47.5 days).

Multiple Ballarat suburbs also made the list for shortest days on market including Golden Point and Ballarat Central, both with a median of 43 days; Lake Wendouree with 46.5 days; and Redan with a median of 47 days.

THE Senate Oval at Parliament House Canberra was home to a lively match of blind cricket between a parliamentary side captained by Minister for Social Services, The Hon Christian Porter MP and Blind Cricket ACT captained by Mike Hamilton - an Australian rep player from Albury.

The match was to celebrate International Day of People with Disability on 3 December.

The parliamentary side wore vision impairment goggles to bat and bowl.

Season opener revving up THE Wahgunyah Speedway Club launched its season on Friday, 4 December at Murray Transport Spares.

The upcoming 2015/16 season is set to be the biggest season in the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history, with a huge season opener set for Boxing Day. The opening event comes as the Mainline DynoLog Dy-

namometers All Star Series announced earlier this year they had locked in an additional round and venue for their schedule for the current season.

Wahgunyah Speedway will host the sixth round on Boxing Day evening (26 December).

The season is expected to be a big one, with the venue that has been operating since 1952,

branching out to enable open wheel classes to compete at the 580 metre track following upgrades. Previously, the track could only cater to sedans.

The All Star Series will head to the Wahgunyah Speedway, before Round Seven quickly kicks off the following day at Nyora Speedway.

ALBURY Little Athletics held their Open Day last month which was a huge success with competitors travelling from far and wide to compete.

There were some excellent results for local athletes with plenty of trophies and medals staying in the Albury Wodonga area.

Mikayla Talbot, in her first year of Little Athletics, competed in 4 x Under 8 Girls events finishing first in all events and broke three Open Day records along the way.

Her long jump of 3.56m bettered the Open Day record by 15cm, and more impressively, bettered the existing Albury Little Athletics Centre record of 3.51cm by 5cm.

The centre record of 3.51m has remained unbeaten for 32 years. Her jump will not count as the centre record as it happened during the Open Day, but it would seem it is only a matter time before the 32-year-old centre record of 3.51m officially falls.

The local Albury Under 9 Girls and Under 10 Boys put in a very solid display as well with plenty of silverware staying put in Albury.
