■ Notorious 'spaghetti junction' chaos set for safety shake-up...

Junction jam VICTORIA’S worst black spot is set for a safety shake-up after 30 years of chaos.

The Springvale Junction - where Princes Highway meets Police, Centre and Springvale roads - recorded 62 casualty crashes between January 2009 and last December.

VicRoads regional director Aidan McGann said this was almost double the second highest figure and that 23 of those casualties were classified as serious.

“That’s hospitalisation with a potentially life-changing injury,” he said.

Mr McGann heard about the junction when he was appointed to his role a year ago.

“The intersection hasn’t really seen a major change for 30 years,” he said.

“We know people have avoided the intersection for a long time.

“Pedestrians are saying it’s a scary place to walk. They realise that car drivers are very distracted by everything they’ve got to look out for.

“If a crash occurs at the intersection it’s very challenging for police and emergency services to manage if the traffic lights are out.

“The more I discovered about it the more I realised we needed to do something about it.

“The best way to do that was to share the dilemma with everyone.

“In sharing the dilemma we share

the capacity to bring good ideas to bear.”

So VicRoads has established the Springvale Junction Working Group, featuring community members and representatives from VicRoads, councils, Victoria Police, the TAC, Public Transport Victoria and more.

“We could have just assumed the problems and come up with some ideas,” Mr McGann said.

“They can tell us what their concerns are and then offer suggestions about options.

“We’re very open to what those ideas might be.

“There is no solution that will hit every point perfectly.”

He said VicRoads needed to know

what the intersection’s users could live with and what had to change - particularly local residents.

“They’re hearing the crashes, they’re experiencing the closures, they’re seeing the mop-up,” he said.

“We’re getting useful information about which of the turning movements are the ones that are causing people the most grief - the delays, people not complying with road rules.”

Possible solutions on the table so far include turn bans, changes to signal timing, closing roads and a giant roundabout.

Mr McGann said an overpass or underpass were the most enduring ideas but they would require a large amount of land, time and money.

“There’s some appeal to it, but the challenge with over and under is that it doesn’t necessarily fix the problem,” he said.

“You’re removing two legs, but you’re still left with a big intersection with all the same challenges you’re facing.

“We’ll be coming back in March with what we think is the most promising idea and will have a conversation with the community.”

Teeth knocked out in library head butt

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AN ASYLUM seeker who dislodged a man’s teeth with punches and a head butt at Dandenong Library has escaped conviction due to the risk of being deported.

Asef Saadat, 21, was charged with recklessly causing serious injury and assault over the lunchtime brawl on 5 July.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Dani Lord told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 23 November that Saadat bumped shoulders and tapped the leg of one of two male victims as he passed them on the library staircase.

After an exchange of words, Saadat then swung punches, loosening two of the victim’s teeth with several blows to the face, the court was told.

The second victim intervened and was hit on his nose, cheek and other parts of his face.

The victims were followed downstairs to the front of the library

by Saadat.

Before two security officers could subdue the accused, he headbutted the first victim’s mouth and knocked out the loose teeth.

He punched the victim several more times to the face and fled.

The victim was taken to Dandenong Hospital where he was told his teeth could not be fixed, Sen Const Lord said.

Saadat was arrested three weeks later.

A defence lawyer conceded Saadat’s self-defence during the incident was “excessive”, having responded to an Afghan insult equivalent to “mother f***er” and one of the victims grabbing him.

“He (since) went to extraordinary lengths to create peace between the families.”

The lawyer told the court about Saadat’s troubled life as an Afghan Hazara refugee, who’d grown up without a father, spent time in Iranian and Indian refugee camps and Christmas Island detention centre and survived a crammed boat ride from Indonesia to Australia.

During the family’s flight to Tehran, their overloaded car drove off the side of a mountain. Saadat received serious head injuries and some occupants died.

With a fifth grade education, Saadat has been banned from work and study under a bridging visa for three years but had ambition to learn English and qualify for a trade, the lawyer said.

Magistrate Gerald Bryant said Saadat’s “vicious and brutal” act was neither reasonable or proportionate.

“It is uncivilised and it calls for denunciation.

“I must impose a penalty today which will hopefully act as a deterrent to you and to others that such brutal displays of violence will not be tolerated by the court.”

Mr Bryant said he couldn’t take into direct account the nature of the victims’ injuries nor Saadat’s Facebook page that identified him with boxing.

“The summary does not suggest in a meaningful way that either

of your victims intended to hurt or harm you.

“It’s difficult to understand what would have motivated you to act in such a brutal and callous fashion particularly for those people who would have shared your journey to this country.”

Mr Bryant took into account Saadat’s 90 days in immigration detention since his arrest, and gave considerable weight to the adverse effect of a conviction.

“If I was to convict you of this serious offence, the impact on you will be vastly different for you than another resident or citizen.”

Any decision to repatriate Saadat to Afghanistan would be ultimately up to the federal immigration department, he said.

Mr Bryant also noted Saadat’s plea of guilty, youth, lack of prior convictions and difficult, traumatic life.

Saadat was fined $3000 without conviction.

It’s the family way

A MAN armed with a drill has stolen $3600 from a Springvale supermarket.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said a man of African appearance aged in his twenties with a slim build walked into the Springvale Road Safeway about 6.35pm on Tuesday 17 November.

He was wearing dark clothing, including a hoodie and a red balaclava across his face.

Det Sgt Kirton said the man threatened cashier staff with a large drill and a large drill bit, and slapped and punched them to the face while demanding they open the register.

He fled on foot when customers yelled at him, and staff tried to chase him.

Keys theft unlocked THIEVES stole car keys and three vehicles from a Keysborough home while the owners slept.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said the aggravated burglary took place in Festival Crescent about 5am on Tuesday 17 November.

He said a man and woman aged 55 and 53 and their 25-year-old son were asleep.

The stolen cars were a Volkswagen Golf, Ford XR6 sedan and a Holden Cruze.

Police arrested two people inside the Cruze about 1pm the same day. They charged and bailed a 15-year-old Dandenong girl, and charged and remanded an 18-year-old man to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday 30 November.

Supermarket robbery

A WOMAN was attacked and robbed as she pushed her three-year-old in a stroller along Stud Road in Dandenong.

Police said the man assaulted the 39-yearold from behind as she approached Herbert Street about 9pm on Saturday 21 November.

He pushed her in the back and held her over the stroller while he stole an iPhone 6 from her back pocket.

The thief ran south along Stud Road and turned east onto King Street.

A NEW cook book is preserving cherished family recipes and promoting healthy eating.

Uniting AgeWell’s Noble Park community produced From Seed to Table to raise funds for a community garden complete with outdoor kitchen.

Community programs co-ordinator Michelle Thompson said the recipes had sentimental value.

She said they were recipes their grandparents used to make, that they used to cook for their children or had been handed down over successive generations.

“There is a lot of cultural diversity among our residents and the recipes reflect that diversity,” Ms Thompson said.

“Our recipes range from Kotopoulo Kapama from Greece to Vindaloo from India to Pho from Vietnam and even the basic meatloaf and pavlova.”

They're wolfing down the big bad kebabs

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A NEW frontier of kebabs has emerged in one of Noble Park’s budding foodie shopping strips.

Little Bad Wolf has a sassy carnivorous logo, sharp contemporary interior and website, and an adventurous menu.

The flair is especially astonishing for its location on humble retro Railway Parade which houses a quality butcher, deli and eateries.

Husband-and-wife owners Osman and Suzie Berk have used their respective architect and fashion designer backgrounds to reinvigorate the old home of Yarraman Kebabs.

It’s a bold, new venture for the couple.

“My husband always wanted something to do with food,” Suzie said.

“None of us had experience in the hospitality industry but you learn quickly.”

They gutted the place, retaining nothing but the slowly rotating kebab racks.

It’s staffed by up to six family members - one who crafts particularly popular, home-cooked baklava sweets.

At the heart of the shop’s invention is the food and an evolving menu that experiments with flavour.

The offerings of marinated lamb, chicken and asana kebabs and cevapi sausages, as well as a

There are some new takes on the asana kebab - a lamb, chilli, capsicum mince moulded around a flat skewer and slowly cooked over charcoals.

Another eye-popping asana topping is gherkin, American mustard, beetroot relish, lettuce and onions.

For those with traditional taste, the kebabs can also be served with pitta bread or dashed with a simple onion, tomato salad.

Suzie said that more boundary-pushing flavours are on the way to attract a younger, adventurous diner.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS PLANNING Minister Richard Wynne has stated he has no “appetite� to support Greater Dandenong’s desire for more than 400 hectares in Keysborough and Bangholme to be removed from the green wedge.

On 23 November, Greater Dandenong councillors passed a hastily convened motion to rezone Keysborough Golf Club’s course at Hutton Road and a parcel bordered by Pillars and Frankston-Dandenong roads, EastLink and flood-prone Eumemmering Creek in Bangholme.

The final say, however, lies with a seemingly steadfast State Government.

A spokesperson for Mr Wynne told Star News that the government’s position was “clear�. “We are committed to maintaining and strengthening the integrity of Victoria’s green wedges. “We have no intention or appetite to change the urban growth boundary.�

Councillor Matthew Kirwan, the only dissenting councillor, accused the council of “ramming through� the motion without public consultation or warning.

The motion was not listed on the meeting’s agenda, much like when the council made the decision to submit for the 337-hectare Bangholme parcel’s inclusion in the urban growth boundary in 2011. “I think it’s been rammed through because the basis for, particularly, the Bangholme precinct doesn’t stack up,� Cr Kirwan said. “If you have something that doesn’t have a good justification you try to avoid having scrutiny on it.�

Cr Kirwan said the floodprone Bangholme parcel had attracted opposition from Frankston council, Melbourne Water and Willow Lodge’s residents as well as being recently knocked back by a state planning panel.

For it to be rezoned as an employment precinct would

risk displacing Willow Lodge’s 600 residents, he said.

He intends to introduce a rescission motion against the proposal on 14 December.

In justifying the move, Cr Jim Memeti said the parcel was opposite Jayco’s headquarters, with already “industrial at the back ... (and) at the front�.

Property developer Intrapac, which has banked land in the parcel and made a failed submission for its rezoning in the past, stated that it was not making a new submission.

Intrapac is also a partner in Keysborough Golf Club’s proposed sell-off of its 76-hectare golf course for a housing development in exchange for a new course and training facility in Pillars Road.

The deal is hoped to net the club $40 million.

Club captain Darrell Swindells said the council realised the move would be of great community benefit. “We are seriously putting up a project which we think will enhance Greater Dandenong.�

“And that’s what we’ve got to do today - look after one another,” she said.

Speakers Mimmie Watts and Rob Hulls donated their time to

the event. A new Victorian Multicultural Commissioner, Ms Watts said family violence affected every woman and every person.

“If it’s not you directly, it will be your sister, it will be your colleague, it may be your child, it may be your aunty,” she

said. “It is something that has come out of the closet now and has become a public issue.”

Ms Watts said it was still a hidden issue in some culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and was a huge problem for female refugees and asylum seekers.

A SEA of white ribbons bearing heartfelt messages spread across the lawn at Harmony Square on Tuesday.

It was the end point for City of Greater Dandenong’s third annual Walk Against Family Violence, which started at The Kitchen and made its way down Lonsdale Street on 24 November.

Walkers wrote messages ranging from, “I pledge to take a stand” to “I survived despite the lies” and planted their ribbon on a larger white ribbon.

Greater Dandenong Mayor Heang Tak said there were 2123 family violence incidents reported in the municipality last year.

“To live in a world where our families and communities are free and safe from violence, we must treat all individuals - women, men, girls and boys - with dignity, equality and respect.”

He said the hundreds of people gathered in the square,

many wearing black T-shirts bearing White Ribbon slogans, was a sight he would not soon forget.

Paroa from Dandenong North was close to tears as he explained to the Journal that family violence was an issue for Pacific communities.

“It’s been a part of the culture to the point where it’s acceptable,” he said.

“Too many people - especially kids - have died because of domestic violence.

“As I was growing up, it was acceptable to have one child in the family who loses their life over domestic violence.”

He said only recently people had started to speak out about it.

“It hurts that much speaking about it,” he said.

“I’ve had a few friends who’ve lost their lives to domestic violence. I stress the word ‘few’. Not just one.

“The important thing is the education that this march provides.”

Cyber stalker

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN has been accused of cyber-stalking one of his five intervention order victims while being treated in Dandenong Hospital mental health unit.

Rhys Benson failed to show cause for bail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 23 November.

He was charged on multiple counts of stalking and breaching an intervention order by sending messages to the victim ex-partner from his mother’s iPad as well as computers at the hospital.

Benson allegedly used his mother’s email address, as well as his own email and Facebook accounts, during the offending.

Informant First Constable Phillipe Latour, of Greater Dandenong police’s family violence unit, said Benson told the victim he’d visited her home five times in the past two years.

One stated: “I just look at your house from the footpath but I don’t look in your house or anything.”

First Const Latour said the victim was concerned because she didn’t think Benson knew where she lived.

On one day, Benson sent more than 10 emails and videos to the victim that depicted him reaching out to her and expressing his feelings for her.

The heroin-addicted accused also sent images of drug paraphernalia “to try to impress her”, the court was told.

Benson was arrested upon his release from the hospital that morning, the court heard.

First Const Latour said Benson took himself to hospital on 17 November to “explain” his offending, but the messages sent to the victim were “quite coherent and lucid”.

“He admitted committing

the offending because of a psychiatric episode and missing his medication.”

Benson, who was representing himself, told the court he had “not been in the right frame of mind” during the correspondence.

“I can promise you I won’t do it again but if my mental health deteriorates I’ll do it again.”

Magistrate Greg Connellan noted that Benson was hospitalised as an involuntary patient after he presented himself on 17 November, which gave “substance” to the accused’s claim.

Mr Connellan, who had released Benson on bail twice recently, said from the outset “the chances of me granting you bail are pretty much zip”.

Benson was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 9 December.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… JAMES Sturgess decided to sidestep the official introduction for marathon swimmer Tammy Van Wisse at the 25 November Premier Regional Business Awards breakfast.

He instead told the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce event about the time he was swimming laps at the old Noble Park pool on his lunch break and noticed her in the next lane.

“I thought ‘I’m going to have a go at seeing whether I can keep up with this superstar’,” he said.

Four three laps he stayed ahead of her, though his lead dwindled.

“I thought about a fourth but my heart and lungs weren’t in that,” he said.

Beaming with pride, he got out of the pool to watch Tammy in action - only to realise she’d been using only one arm, as a training drill.

“There was me going absolutely flat out for three laps and still losing my lead.”

LETTERS Green tinted spectacles I READ with interest your report on the PTV bus forum held at Keysborough College last week to discuss proposed bus routes for Keysborough South.

Whilst the report focused on the negative spin provided by Greens Party councillor Matthew Kirwan, I think you’d have had a very different impression from talking to the 70 residents who came to share their ideas.

I was proud to break the news that under Labor, a new bus service for Keysborough South will start next year.

Locals were happy to give feedback on their preferred route - that’s what the session was all about.

As for Cr Kirwan’s comments, I’m not surprised he had almost nothing positive to say.

Whilst I, and other CGD councillors like the tireless Cr Roz Blades have been endeavouring to make this new bus route a reality, I have had

no representations on the issue from Cr Kirwan.

I suppose that’s the difference between working hard to get results and simply commentating on issues, which is the normal approach of the Greens Party.

After four years of inaction and neglect under the Liberals, Labor is getting on with the job of meeting the public transport needs of our local community.

We all know Keysborough South has grown rapidly in the last few years.

In 2010 it was mainly paddocks and a few houses.

I’ve listened carefully to the voices of our community and will continue to fight for and deliver what’s needed.

I am certain PTV will take into account the many views that were raised and will seek to find a balance between service frequency and route coverage.

Minister urged to save kids

Attacker’s booze ban

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN has been banned from licensed venues for a year after injuring several people in a series of drunken assaults in the past year.

Akol Akol, 24, faced 23 charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 23 November, including drunkenly assaulting his ex-partner one afternoon on Mills Reserve, Noble Park.

On 9 August, Akol threatened to choke the victim, after she smashed his whiskey bottle on the ground during an argument.

She fled to her cousin’s home where she and her cousin locked herself in the bedroom.

Akol then smashed a window at the front door with his foot, climbed inside and tried to talk to the victim and cousin

through the bedroom door.

At 4am earlier that day, police attended a family violence incident in Sunbury in which Akol held a fork in a threatening manner and talked about killing the possums in the roof.

During his rant, he awoke a 12-weekpregnant relative and punched her to the head and stomach, as her one-year-daughter lay in a cot next to her bed.

Akol then punched a male to the face, and put two holes in a plaster wall in his efforts to punch and kick the victim.

Both victims were taken to hospital by ambulance.

Akol, who had a significant problem with alcohol since he was 16, was also charged with intentionally causing injury for punching a moving skateboard rider’s

face on a Swanston Street footpath.

At the time, Akol was observedly affected by alcohol. He told police “it shouldn’t be intentionally because I was drunk”.

On two nights, he stole more than $290 of hard liquor from three bottle shops in Altona and Melbourne CBD. Magistrate Gerard Bryant said Akol was intelligent but had a difficult life in Yemen and Uganda, growing up subject to threats of violence and bullying, and without a proper father figure.

It had led to Akol’s “real difficulty” in disciplining himself and knowing the impact of his behaviour on others, Mr Bryant said.

He convicted Akol and placed him on a community corrections order that banned

him from alcohol-licenced venues for 12 months.

Akol’s 107 days in remand custody was treated as time served in jail.

“I think it’s in his interest, his family’s interest and the community interest if he’s nowhere near where alcohol is being served,” Mr Bryant said.

“You’re one of those people where one drink is too many and 100 is not enough.

“You’ve got to ask yourself the question whether you want to make alcohol a part of your life.”

Mr Bryant asked Akol if he could go 12 months without alcohol.

“I’ll give it my best,” Akol replied.

The magistrate said: “If you don’t make a change you’ll be spending the next five to 10 years in and out of prison”.

KEYSBOROUGH kids are at risk unless the Roads Minister heeds calls for a school zone, according to councillor Roz Blades.

Greater Dandenong councillors agreed to write to Narre Warren North MP and Roads Minister Luke Donnellan asking for 40-kilometre electronic speed signs near Chandler Park Primary School in Chandler Road at their Monday 23 November meeting.

“It’s a matter of child safety,” Cr Blades said.

In August the Journal reported that acting principal Naomi Reed and Cr Blades were concerned because students from Maralinga Primary School, which closed earlier this year, were crossing Chandler Road to reach their new classrooms at Chandler Park.

At the time VicRoads Metro South East transport and planning director Con Stasinos said he would review the area’s eligibility for the signage and work with the school to understand pedestrian movements.

But at its Monday night meeting the council revealed its requests to VicRoads for help had been unsuccessful, prompting the request to the minister.

Water bomber called in as fire threatens PROPERTIES in Pillars Road, Bangholme were threatened by a grass and scrub fire on 24 November.

About 18 CFA trucks and a fire-fighting helicopter were deployed to contain the 2.5 hectare blaze that started at Riverend Road about 3.50pm.

During the emergency, the helicopter filled its tanks at the nearby National Watersports Centre reservoir, much to the surprise of training rowers.

Bangholme, Keysborough, Waterways and Aspendale residents were briefly advised to leave their homes at the height of a ‘watch and act’ warning.

Pervert priest stalked girls

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS WIELDING a gun, stealing school funds and molesting children - no allegation was strong enough to dislodge parish priest Father Peter Searson from Doveton’s Holy Family Parish and school for 13 years.

Former student Julie Stewart told a Royal Commission into institutional responses to child sexual abuse on 25 November that she was preyed on by Father Searson in the privacy of the Catholic confession box soon after he arrived in 1984.

Searson was the last of a string of four accused paedophile priests overseeing the Doveton parish from 1972-97.

During 12 months, Searson’s indecency progressed from coercing her to sit on his knee, requesting her to kiss his lips, and touching her genitals, Ms Stewart told the hearing at the County Court.

On the final occasion in 1985, he sat her on his lap while he was aroused and whispered “you’re a good girl.

The Lord forgives you”.

Ms Stewart told the hearing she ran out “sobbing and hyperventilating” to a teacher and other children waiting in confessional.

She was taken to see principal Graham Sleeman at the time and didn’t go to confession again.

Mr Sleeman told the hear-

ing after that incident he was “convinced beyond doubt” that his boss Searson was “interfering” with boys and girls.

“On that very day that she came out, a little girl who was always open and communicative to me became a total recluse."

Mr Sleeman told the hearing he argued with Searson’s concept of reconciliation, in which he was “hellbent” on instructing each child in the privacy of the confessional.

Mr Sleeman’s repeated complaints were met with no action from the Catholic Education Office nor senior clergy right up to Archbishop Frank Little.

“That’s my greatest cross that I have to bear now, that perhaps I didn’t provide enough safety for the children that were placed in my care.

“I’m saying ‘yeah there’s the evidence, this is what he’s doing. It is contrary to church teachings, it’s contrary to general conduct of a person who is involved with children’. They treated me like a dill.”

By that time, the principal had complaints of Searson pulling an army service revolver on boy cleaners at the school, tape-recording confessions with children, stealing $45,000 of school money for personal use and asking children to kneel between his knees. Mr Sleeman threatened

to resign in 1986, but was still told by the Catholic Education Office that Searson would remain at Doveton for the foreseeable future.

“I believed, and I am convinced now, that the Melbourne Archdiocese had no concern for the parisioners of Holy Family School Doveton and what priests they sent to them.”

Ms Stewart told the hearing that no senior clergy or representatives from the Catholic Education Office spoke to her about the incident until 1997.

In that year, she was interviewed by Peter O’Callaghan QC, appointed as an independent commissioner by then Archbishop George Pell to examine child sexual abuse allegations within the Church.

That year, she was seated facing Fr Season and cross-examined by his lawyer in a “hostile” way during a hearing presided over by Mr O’Callaghan.

After the hearing, she signed a confidentiality statement in the next room. She later received a $25,000 from the archdiocese and a letter of apology from Archbishop Pell.

At the time, Searson was finally removed as priest, put on administrative leave and charged with unlawful assault after a complaint of him hitting an altar boy.

He was released without conviction on a good behaviour bond. He died in 2009.

COMMUNITY input could stop Noble Park grade separations from destroying the suburb’s heart, according to City of Greater Dandenong.

The council is urging the State Government to accept its thoughts on plans to remove the level crossings at Heatherton, Chandler and Corrigan roads.

Councillor Roz Blades said she was concerned that the community would be forced to accept a rail over road design.

“I reckon it would be disastrous for Noble Park,” she said.

“We want the same model as Springvale.”

Mayor Heang Tak said a good design will support the Noble Park activity centre’s development.

“We will be disappointed if the final decisions were made without any input from council.”

The State Government released the Level Crossing Removal Project: Caulfield to Dandenong Consultation Report on Wednesday 25 November.

It’s a snapshot of feedback from the first round of community consultation on grade separation plans, including those at Heatherton, Chandler and Corrigan roads.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the project bidders had received the feedback to inform their proposals and designs.

“People want these congested death-traps removed as soon as possible but at the same time

they want better cycling and pedestrian links and better parking, while still protecting local vegetation,” she said.

Noble Park participants expressed a strong appreciation for Ross Reserve, the RSL, the Douglas Street shopping precinct, open space at Heatherton Road and Mons Parade, remnant River Red Gum trees, and pedestrian links.

“Issues related mostly to current congestion and a need to improve accessibility, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists,” the report said.

“Community members want to see improved pedestrian access to Ross Reserve and safe crossings for cyclists.

“Pedestrian access to Noble Park Secondary College was also an issue that locals would like resolved.”

DANDENONG Market’s produce has impressed MasterChef’s The Spice Man. Jamie Ward, a contestant from the television show’s 2015 season, is jumping into The Kitchen to share recipes with shoppers.

“The first time I went there I was blown away. I don’t think I’ve seen anywhere else in Melbourne that had such a range of spices,” he said.

“It’s got such an array of different produce and the prices are ridiculously cheap.

“It’s filled with super friendly people as well.”

Mr Ward hosted his first Dandenong Market live cooking demonstration on Sunday 22 November.

He whipped up potato and lamb croquettes, spiced carrots and yoghurt sauce, and potato skin crisps with herbed salt and carrot head pesto.

“I’m trying to mix it up and keep it pretty simple,” he said.

“I want to showcase basic ingredients, your staple ingredients.

“I want to show different ways to use them, and every bit of them.”

Mr Ward was born in England and raised in Tasmania, but his Sri Lankan heritage has most influenced his cooking style.

“I just like to experiment with different spices,” he said.

“It’s not all about making food hot.

He said coriander and cumin were the two spice staples for every pantry, followed by fennel seeds, mustard seeds, cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, cardamom and cloves.

On Sunday 6 December, he’ll present a beginner’s guide to all things chicken, including how to break down the bird into pieces.

He’ll make chicken stock that doesn’t take up too much freezer space and pulled chicken tostadas with chipotle mayonnaise and spicy tomato salsa.

He’ll make a Christmas turkey dish on Sunday 20 December, with sage, date and walnut

stuffing, Moorish turkey gravy, and honey, nutmeg and caraway seed roast carrots.

“That will be with rolled turkey breast. It’s still turkey but I’m going to show that you don’t have to just roast the whole bird,” he said.

Back to work will be the focus on Sunday 10 January, with Jamie’s top sandwiches.

Thankful for new life

By CASEY NEILL SPRINGVALE’S Be Ha can’t thank Australia enough for opening its arms and hearts to her family.

“We only hope that you are proud of us,” she said.

On 29 November 1979, Captain Sloan aboard British cargo ship Entalina rescued Ms Ha and almost 150 other Vietnamese refugees from a 12 metre fishing boat and took them to Darwin.

Thousands of others had made the same journey after the Vietnam War ended in 1975.

Ms Ha was instrumental in creating the Vietnamese in Australia: 40 Years of Settlement exhibition to mark the milestone.

It followed a display at Springvale Rise Primary School, where she works in administration, earlier this year and opened at the Immigration Museum in Melbourne on 7 November.

Ms Ha wants the migrants’ descendants to understand their roots and the wider community to understand their story.

“Nobody wants to leave their country,” she said.

“We had to go.

“Little did we know the extent of human decency, kindness and generosity awaiting us.”

Her decision to flee came after her husband, a South Vietnamese infantry lieutenant, returned from two and a half years in a re-education camp.

They didn’t want their children, aged five and six, to grow up in the oppressive communist society.

“Every day in the morning I say hello to him,” Ms Ha said of one elderly man, a tear running down her cheek.

“In the morning, the sun was very hot. At night time it was so cold.

“One day when I woke up and talked to him he didn’t answer me.

He’d passed away.”

They arrived in Darwin on 4 December 1979 and moved into Springvale’s Enterprise Hotel on 11 February 1980.

“We were so grateful how Australia welcomed us and provided us with a second chance in life,” Ms Ha said.

“All we wanted to do was be suc-

cessful in integrating into the Australian society and become productive citizens.”

Ms Ha and her husband worked multiple jobs.

“Our drive and hard work was for the children to have a better future,” she said.

“Seeing them fitting into the Australian society, doing well at school and just simply being children and having a normal childhood was the ultimate dream.

“Gratitude towards Australia and its people drove me to wanting to repay Australia and the Australian society and people.”

She established non-profit welfare organisation Springvale Indo-

chinese Mutual Assistance Association (SICMAA) in 1982 and is today its president.

She helped to found Hoa Nghiem Temple in Springvale, is treasurer for the Vietnamese Cultural Heritage Centre and the Vietnam War Memorial at Dandenong RSL, and raises money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

She’s also actively involved in Lions Club of Melbourne Vietnamese and the Vietnamese Community in Australia’s Victorian chapter.

REGIONS SEE STRONG GROWTH It’s been a big year for the property market across the state with strong growth in sales activity in many areas of regional Victoria in the year to 30 September.

Total sales in regional Victoria increased 15 per cent over the year to 23,200 transactions, up from just over 20,200 sales for the same period last year.

The Surf Coast Shire in the state’s south-west recorded the highest increase in sales over the previous year, up more than 40 per cent to 482 sales.

This was followed by the predominately rural municipality of Baw Baw where sales volumes rose by more than 30 per cent

seen in the City of Ballarat where more than 1700 homes were sold over the year.

Sales volumes also rose in the City of Greater Bendigo, up 4.6 per cent over the same period last year to 1227 sales.

And, while auction activity is highly publicised in Melbourne, private sale remains the most popular way to sell a home in Victoria.

This is particularly the case in three regional centres - Ocean Grove, Mildura and Wodonga where private sales were the preferred method of marketing homes for sale.

In the year to 30 September, more than nine out of 10 homes in

to 746 sales.

This was up from 571 sales in the previous year.

Other municipalities recording significant increases in turnover include the City of La Trobe, up 20 per cent to 893 sales; Macedon Ranges, up 18.9 per cent to 585 sales; and Wellington Shire, up 18.3 per cent to 585 sales.

The City of Greater Geelong had regional Victoria’s highest turnover in the 12 months to 30 September, with almost 2700 sales.

This was up 11.4 per cent on the same period last year when there were 2400 sales.

Wodonga was another strong private sale performer with 92 per cent of the 239 homes sold over the year to 30 September being by private sale.

Cricket's taxing times TAX consultants were pitched in a friendly cricket battle with some of Dandenong’s newest arrivals at Hemmings Park.

Deloitte workers took on a team of clients and staff from migrant and refugee agency AMES on the pitch on 20 November.

On the same day they shared their experience with AMES students at employment-readiness mentoring sessions.

It was part of Deloitte’s national Impact Day in which its staff volunteered in community activities.

AMES teacher Luke Treadwell said the volunteers gave valuable insight and feedback to AMES students.

“Our international lunch was also great and enjoyed by all,” he said.

Christmas gifts mean the world for asylum seekers JUST one gift would be a meaningful Christmas gesture for each of Jesuran Wellness Centre’s 50 asylum-seeker clients, says the centre’s pastor Hilda Samuel.

To make this happen, the centre needs donations of saris, shirts or non-perishable Christmas fare such as tea, cake, puddings and bonbons for hampers, Ms Samuel said.

Cash is even better to buy suitable-sized clothes and toys for about 20 children.

The centre’s basic, free services for new arrivals, such as job help and training, lunches,

library and a social hub, is also reliant on private funding.

It doesn’t take a cent of government funds.

“Twenty businesses donating $100 each a month would cover our rent. In return we’ll promote them on our website.”

Anyone who can help is asked to donate cash or deliver goods to Jesuran Wellness Centre at Herbert Street, Dandenong from Tuesday to Sunday.

Hopes pinned on container

Trams are on order

BOMBARDIER has officially received the State Government order for 20 extra E-Class trams announced in the May budget.

But the Opposition says it’s not enough, after pledging on 9 November to order 75 new E-Class trams from the Dandenong manufacturer if reelected.

Bombardier is currently building 50 E-Class trams, the last of which is due to enter service in May 2017.

The first trams of the new order are expected on the network in June 2017 and all 70 should be in service by late 2018.

Prior to this year’s State Budget, the Journal reported that Bombardier needed a new work order

by November to secure supplier contracts and avoid having to reduce its 430-strong workforce.

The State Government said the former Liberal Government did not order a single tram in its four years in office, putting jobs at Bombardier and related suppliers at risk.

Bombardier Transportation Australia managing director Rene Lalande welcomed the order.

“We recently celebrated the 1 million km milestone journey of the existing E-Class fleet, which demonstrates their excellence in reliability,” he said. “Bombardier is proud to be part of Australia’s rail transportation network, and we look forward to delivering the additional trams to the Melbourne network.”

THE Premier Regional Business Awards will cap off its 25th and final year with a “spectacular” gala dinner in Springvale.

Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce held its final breakfast under the current awards program at Sandown Greyhounds in Springvale on Wednesday 25 November.

MC Jamie Sturgess told guests he expected them all to return on Wednesday 13 April for “the most expensive event ever held in this room”.

There’ll be displays highlighting every Premier Regional Business Award winner and each of the 400-plus guests will get to vote for the 2015 winner.

The chamber will launch a new business recognition breakfast program in May. This year each breakfast highlights a successful business from the awards’ past and a newcomer with a bright future.

SteriHealth was this breakfast’s newcomer, though Dan Daniels founded the business in 1986 during the HIV epidemic.

Strategic development director Mike Magyar said health providers would destroy sharps containers along with the needles inside and Mr Daniels thought this was a real waste.

In his garage he designed a sharps container that could be washed, sanitised and re-distributed.

A PVC pipe with a cap on each end and a hole drilled in it was “the first product he got into The Alfred hospital”.

After a stint as a public company, SteriHealth is back in private hands under the Daniels International Australia umbrella.

It employs 350 people in Australia, including 155 in Dandenong.

Fantech won the 2009 Premier Regional Business Award and that year’s Employment Award.

Marketing director Paul de Bruin said “in very simple terms we do make fans”.

But electronically controlling ventilation and air quality is the company’s focus.

Fantech employs 130 people in Dandenong and uses innovative systems to share the workload.

The morning’s Youth Enterprise Award nominee Courtney Pastean has won outstanding student awards for her beauty coursework at Chisholm Institute in Dandenong.

The Keysborough 17-year-old recalled getting into her mum’s make-up bag to play dress-ups and feeling empowered by the result.

Swimmer says it’s easier to go with the flow LONG-DISTANCE swimmer Tammy Van Wisse grew up just a block away from Sandown Greyhounds.

She told the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Premier Regional Business Awards breakfast on Wednesday 25 November that her dad owned a business on Lightwood Road and she swam at the Noble Park and Dandenong pools.

The guest speaker encouraged businesses to swim with the tide, not against it, and to control what they could and deal with and what they couldn’t.

Ms Van Wisse set six world records during her career, five that are still standing.

In an example of her glass-half-full approach to life, she revealed she suffers from selachophobia - a fear of sharks.

The Jaws theme often enters her head same way and dreams of running a free service for people feeling self-conscious about their appearance due to illness and accidents.

“I want to bring empowerment back to people,” she said.

She’ll take a gap year next year to “experience life” before returning to studies at Chisholm in 2017.

Hall’s popularity leaves businesses at a loss TRADERS in a Dandenong shopping strip say parking problems are costing them customers.

At the 23 November Greater Dandenong Council meeting, Cr Matthew Kirwan asked officers to assess and address issues in the Menzies Avenue precinct and report back in March.

He said the newly-renovated Menzies Public Hall’s popularity had increased, improvements to the park were attracting more visitors, and shoppers increasingly hailed from outside the suburb.

But he said these positives had created traffic congestion, prevented shoppers from parking and reduced visibility for pedestrians.

Terry Tairovski has run Menzies Cellars in Menzies Avenue for 17 years.

He welcomed the hall and park upgrades but said the parking configuration needed to change to cope with the increased demand.

“This all leads to more than what it can handle,” he said.

“All the cars are parking in front of the shops.

“When the hall is leased out on weekends we kiss our car parking goodbye.

“They park everywhere - on nature strips, on footpaths, everywhere. You name it, they park, even blocking people’s driveways.

“Customers can’t get parking spots.”

What’s in a name VICTORIA’S largest business organisation has a new name.

The 160-year-old Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI), based in Narre Warren, is now known as the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

President Mark Birrell said other state and territory chambers would progressively adopt the brand.

“Our new name, along with the unveiling of our new logo, symbolises our enhanced focus on national issues of importance to Victorian business and stronger alignment with the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry,” he said.

“We are the voice of business in Victoria and our members will benefit from our enhanced federal advocacy position.”

By JARROD POTTER TUESDAY’S AFL National Draft proved life-changing for six Dandenong Stingrays players who made the first step towards their football futures.

It was an incredibly successful outing for the Stingrays, with their picks the equal-most of any club in Australia, starting at the top of the list as superstar defender Jacob Weitering headed to Carlton with the first pick.

Weitering from Mt Martha, who just turned 18 last Monday, had been touted for months as the numberone-in-waiting, but it was a great relief to finally hear his name called at the Adelaide Convention Centre as he now starts his career as a Blue.

“I can’t thank everyone that has helped me over the journey, especially my family and my friends, both sitting at home watching and obviously here tonight (Tuesday),” Weitering said.

“Thank you so much for all you’ve done - obviously the AFL as well and the Carlton Football Club for picking me at pick one.

“I’m very excited - I can’t wait to get under way.”

After Kieran Collins (pick 26) was picked by the Bulldogs it was an anxious wait for the remaining Stingrays, but the good news from Adelaide filtered through after a tense couple of rounds.

Surprising many draft experts, the biggest Stingrays’ shock of the night came as Liam Hulett, who had missed most of the season through an ankle injury, earned a place on Melbourne’s list with pick 42.

“Unbelievable - you captured the video which I’m happy to share with anyone - it’s so surreal,” White said.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet - I was in tears and enjoying it with the family was unbelievable.

“It’s not too far away, so mum and dad will be a bit shattered that I’m still at home - but I’m excited

to be going down there and earning my respect from the team mates, coaching staff and all the hard work is ahead, really.”

Stingrays coach Craig Black was thrilled with the club’s efforts in one of the greatest drafts in its TAC Cup history.

We’re really happy with six people getting picked, but you still feel disappointed for a couple of boys on

the periphery,” Black said.

“It’s a fantastic result for us at the Stingrays - if you told me that at the start of the year I’d take it any day of the week.

“It’s great work and recognition for all the hard work of the coaches at the Stingrays - from under-15s, 16s all the way up to 18s and everyone involved in the TAC Cup program at the Stingrays.”

Bombers home in on Nyuon as AFL target

By JARROD POTTER FROM sitting at a desk at Shepley Oval doing his work, to rushing across the Bolte Bridge to join his new AFL club, Friday morning has been a whirlwind for newly selected Essendon footballer Gach Nyuon.

Nyuon, 18, from Keysborough, had his hopes fulfilled in the AFL rookie draft as a click of the mouse changed the 200cm ruckman’s life.

Capping off his incredible year - having earned All Australian and TAC Cup Team of the Year honours and a national championship - The Stingrays’ mainstay will get to play for the Bombers in 2016 after he was chosen with the fourth pick overall.

As soon as he arrived at his Dandenong Stingrays’ traineeship on Friday - where he helps out with Auskick and sponsor seminars - Nyuon received the phenomenal news at 11am.

“It’s great - I’m pretty excited,” Nyuon said on Friday morning just minutes after his name was called out.

“Sort of had a rough idea - they (Essendon) called me yesterday and told me what was going to happen and it’s a bit more of a relief I guess - it’s special.”

“Missing out on the national draft was disappointing, but I just waited for today to see what hap-

pens,” Nyuon said.

“Not much changed this week - not with my work and training nothing changed from what I went about with the Stingrays.”

He didn’t get much time to let his newly-announced AFL career sink in, with Essendon beckoning him to make the trip out to the western suburbs immediately to be presented to the club,

players and media later today.

“I’m at Shepley Oval - but have to leave pretty soon as the Bombers want me to get over there and do some media,” Nyuon said.

Nyuon believes the hard work necessary to earn his place in the senior side will inspire him greatly, as he relishes the challenge of advancing from the rookie list.

“I reckon it’s going to push me more that I was going into the rookie draft - I knew I had national draft talent,” Nyuon said. “I’m ready to take it and get my best shot - I’ll work twice as hard if I need to but I’m ready to get into it.”

It caps off an amazing rise into the football world for Nyuon whose first AFL season will only be his fourth overall in football, after taking up the sport in 2012.

Following its amazing Tuesday night where six Stingrays were selected - including Carlton’s number one pick Jacob Weitering - Dandenong ended with seven players on AFL lists from its 2015 squad.

Another Greater Dandenong expat Alex Woodward was re-listed

by Hawthorn after the unlucky midfielder suffered another ACL knee injury earlier this year.

DEAN Rice was not fussed where his son ended up, he was just thrilled to see Bailey make it into the AFL. A contingent of family and friends gathered around to see Bailey Rice, 18, who grew up playing for Endeavour Hills, snatched one of only 70 spots on offer from the AFL clubs at Tuesday night’s national draft.

The Rice cohort had to wait into the third round to hear Bailey’s name and it came not from the Saints at first, but Richmond which used pick 49 to bid on the talented defender/midfielder.

But the Saints matched the bid to ensure the Rice legacy would continue onto the next generation as Bailey became one of six Dandenong Stingrays taken in the national draft - a fantastic result for the TAC Cup club.

“It’s crazy - I was just watching it with family and friends and I’m over the moon,” Rice said.

“I’m lost for words ... didn’t think the Saints were going to match it (Richmond’s bid) at first but I was pretty confident they would.”

Instead of heading to schoolies in Queensland later this week, Rice would be on a different trip to the sunshine state as he and Stingrays team mate Brandon White start pre-season with the Saints and get stuck into their careers.

“Got a call before saying I was going to Queensland on Saturday - was meant to go to schoolies on the 28th in Queensland but this is even better,” Rice said.

“Going to St Kilda and Queensland this week instead.”

A lot has changed for St Kilda Rice-to-Rice as the club has shifted from Moorabbin and Waverley Park when Dean ended his time there in 1993, to now training at Seaford and playing indoor home games at Etihad Stadium.

But the pride of getting into the system hasn’t changed and Dean Rice could not have been more excited to hear his son’s name called out.

“Very proud mate, just as a father let alone going to the same club that I played for - just that he gets the opportunity to play AFL footy,” Dean Rice said.

“He’s worked really hard at it and gets an opportunity that many kids don’t get and it could set him up for life now if he makes the most of it.”

Dean’s football legacy gave Bailey Rice a unique choice between Carlton and St Kilda by means of the father-son rule, but in the end the elder Rice thought his son’s dual-heritage didn’t serve him that much of an advantage.

“I think the whole structure was a bit weird - it was all over the place - and to a point I think Bailey having two clubs he could go to pushed him down the draft a bit,” Dean Rice said.

“Clubs were baulking at him, thinking ‘oh well, there’s no point us bidding on him if he’s going to go to one of those clubs anyway’, so it pushed his value down the draft a bit, but anyway he got to the club in the end and that’s the main thing.”

One of the loudest on the field, Bailey Rice was surprisingly lost for words on Tuesday night but wanted to make sure everyone in his life - whether around or away from the footy oval knew how much they meant to him.

“There are so many people I’d like to thank - I don’t want to do names as I’d probably miss a lot of people, but there are so many and I want to thank everyone who has been a part of my life,” Rice said.

Hats are at the ready

By ROY ASPINALL THE successful William Hill Sandown Guineas Day may have concluded the 2015 Spring Racing Carnival, but no-one should put away their fascinators just yet.

There’s another exciting day of racing this Saturday at William Hill Park Sandown with the 12th Greater Dandenong Community Race Day and it is free for all local residents and ratepayers to attend.

Sandown is not just a major sporting venue in the south-eastern suburbs but is an icon that the Greater Dandenong community can take pride in.

The feature event, the Listed $120,500 Doveton Stakes (1000 metres), has been won by some outstanding horses in the past including Apache Cat in 2007, Catapulted in 2012 and Vatican in 2013.

This year, organisers are expecting another good field of runners.

The Swettenham Stud Summer Championship will also begin this Saturday at William Hill Park.

The championship comprises nine heats in December and January followed by a $100,000 final to be run over 1700 metres at Caulfield on Australia Day. The day, organised by the City of Greater Dandenong Council in conjunction with the Melbourne Racing Club, will also include a Bungee fun run, jumping castle and pony rides for the kids.

Greater Dandenong residents or ratepayers can enjoy free admission for the entire family if they provide proof of their address.

Attractive dining packages are still available and bookings can be made by phoning Melbourne Racing Club on 9257 7100.

The current William Hill Park, Sandown Racecourse opened on 19 June 1965 before a crowd of 52,379 people, a record that has never been eclipsed.

Applebee looks to bold new horizons

By JARROD POTTER “CRICKET has definitely given me a lot more than what I ever expected ... more than I’ve given it, so I definitely appreciate what the game has been able to give me.”

After a phenomenal career in the navy blue, former VicSpirit captain Kelly Applebee, 33, has announced her retirement following Sunday’s season-ending loss to New South Wales.

With 116 Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) matches and 59 Twenty20s under her belt more than any other player - Applebee said it was time to bow out and focus on the next chapter - raising her daughter Ella and featuring for the Melbourne Stars in the inaugural Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).

“I’ve been thinking about it for a little while and been reflecting on me as a player and the time commitment that it takes to train and prepare as much as you possibly can,” Applebee said. “I’ve got a little five

month old daughter Ella as well, so it’s probably a really good time for me and the team as well, we’ve got some good young players coming through and the timing just felt right.

“It’s quite bizarre to think I’ve played my last game for Victoria started playing when I was 18 and it’s been half my life-time playing for the one side -so I don’t think it will be until I watch the girls play next season that it will become reality.”

The City of Greater Dandenong 2014 Sportsperson of the Year who tirelessly works to improve Dandenong Women’s Cricket Club - moved to Melbourne from Bairnsdale as an 18-year-old and ever since she has piled on the achievements for Victoria.

She amassed 2894 runs for Victoria since her debut in 2001 and also picked up two one-day premierships (2003 and 2005) and triumphed in Women’s T20 (2010 and 2012).

But her greatest cricketing memories are of team mates and great

opponents - with these people of cricket set to always feature in her life off the field.

“I was out there when Meg Lanning made her first hundred, was out there with Sarah (Elliott) making her ton the other week,” Applebee said. “Being out there celebrating a player’s first wicket or handing over their cap coming into the team for the first time - they’re moments I’ll never ever forget and stuff I’ve been really proud of.

“I’ve played with some amazing cricketers along the way and learned so much about cricket and life from them, so I’m very, very proud to say I’ve played with some of the best in the world and some I call really good friends today.”

Applebee isn’t done with highcalibre cricket though; she will add a new cap to her collection on debut for the Melbourne Stars in their inaugural WBBL game on 5 December at the Junction Oval, St Kilda, against the Brisbane Heat, starting at 10am as part of a WBBL doubleheader.

“The Women’s Big Bash is a really exciting competition and is fantastic for women’s cricket in general,” Applebee said. “It will feel quite strange to be playing against someone like Sarah (Elliott) - Sarah and I have nearly played all our cricket together and will be weird lining up against her.

“Melbourne Stars have really embraced the women’s game and have the motto - one club, two teams - and has been great with its commitment to exposing our team to everyone as much as possible.”

She hasn’t made a decision on her future playing Women’s Premier Cricket with Dandenong, but whether she plays or not Applebee will always be a fixture around Greaves Reserve, helping push the club along as a coach.

“I don’t think they’ve seen the last of me just yet,” Applebee said.

“Dandenong has been my home away from home - moving down to Melbourne when I was 18 - and I’ve definitely got a lot left to give back to the club.”

Rangers flood the Flames

By JARROD POTTER WNBL - ROUND 8 DOUSING the Sydney Uni Flames has Dandenong back in the WNBL winner’s circle after a sensational Saturday night performance.

Putting some ongoing problems behind them, the Rangers have shown they’re a force to worry about as they thrashed the former WNBL ladder leaders by 20 points.

The Rangers came into the match down on personnel, with starters Aimie Clydesdale and Alex Bunton sidelined, and facing the league’s top side after back-to-back losses in a huge month of road-trips.

The bookies would’ve given any price for the hosts’ victory, but the Rangers didn’t let the occasion overwhelm them in a four-quarter demolition of the Flames.

From a 10-1 start, the Rangers gave no inch as the visitors weren’t able at any point to surpass the green-and-gold army.

Dandenong shared the workload at both ends using ithe full roster to perfection.

They swamped Katie-Rae Ebzery (16 points) and the Flames’ tall contingent before the Rangers charged back up court to knock down its shots throughout the squad.

Eight Rangers had five-or-more point with the spread paying off in particular through the second half as the margin ballooned.

Alex Bunton’s absence allowed centre Jacinta Kennedy (12 points, five rebounds, four assists) a chance to start and subsequently star at both ends.

The Rangers were plus-24 when Kennedy was on court as she negated the Flames’ WNBAexperienced talls Carolyn Swords (15 points, 13 rebounds) and Joslyn Tinkle (0 points).

Kennedy owned the post at both ends, as Swords’ double-double was claimed well and truly after the result was decided.

Amelia Todhunter (nine points, seven assists, seven rebounds) was another to relish her starting opportunity.

She pierced the Flames’ defences, setting up her team mates before filling out her own stats with a pair of sublime fourth-term treys.

Relishing her return to life at Dandenong this year, Steph Cumming (23 points) continued her mercurial season as she knocked in her sixth

Cumming’s buzzer-beating three to end the half left Sydney Uni well and truly on the back foot and she continued to rattle off her shots while keeping a close eye on Flames’ captain Ebzery.

From all facets Dandenong blanketed the Sydney Uni effort and for Rangers coach Larissa Anderson, it showed no one is safe at the top as the

league is too even to allow any mistakes.

“At this standard if any teams have lapses you get punished and we’ve just been punished for lapses over the last couple of weeks,” Anderson said.

“That’s where all the girls copped it on the chin this week and I think it would be fair to say they brought it together.

“Our focus was what we could control and we had to go back to defence and throwing a few different things out there and giving it a crack.”

The win keeps the Rangers above .500 with a game in hand on the top four and will hope to push back into finals equation when Dandenong battles Perth at home on Friday before flying to face Adelaide on Sunday.

Panthers’ Alleyne stops rot

By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET ROUND 8 REVIEW (Twenty20) LETTING the foot off the accelerator almost cost Dandenong (8/110) against St Kilda (7/109).

Well ahead for the vast majority of the game, Dandenong in the end struggled to reach the target and only got there by the skilful lower-order work of David Alleyne (31no).

While he might have a few greys poking through his beard, Alleyne showed he hasn’t lost any touch over the journey as he rescued Dandenong’s batting.

What should’ve been a tiny total was allowed to balloon out as Dandenong failed to fire after devastating first-up spells from Justin Butterfield (3/13) and James Wilcock (3/23). The quick tandem eliminated the first five St Kilda bats for just 23 within the first five overs, leaving only the lower order to pierce.

But St Kilda returned fire as Alex Bychkov (40no) played a gallant innings - defending the good balls and rotating the singles alongside James Muirhead (21). With the tail-end wagging, St Kilda managed to hit a few boundaries at the death to post a 110 run-chase for

Working the singles with Peter Sweeney (9), Alleyne saw off St Kilda’s troublesome spinners Michael Beer (1/18), Josh Drummond (2/5) and Muirhead (2/17) before cashing in against the quicks for the final few overs.

Alleyne belted Jak Jowett (2/16) for 10 off the second last over - with two amazing cuts racing to the boundary - to leave 10 needed off the last.

“If we hit four or five boundaries in that and looked at a run a ball and we’d be there or there abouts and it just so happened that it worked out that way.

“We’ve played some really good cricket, certainly over this year - it’s always nice to be part of a win and hopefully there’s some more runs to come and more wins to come.”

The Panthers faced Footscray-Edgewater on Sunday after the Journal went to print.

In next weekend’s twin-fixture, Dandenong is home on Saturday to Geelong and away against Melbourne on Sunday.

DDCA - ROUND 5 REVIEW (Day 1) SECURING a win already, Springvale South toyed with North Dandenong as it aims for top of Turf 1.

SPRINGVALE SOUTH v NORTH DANDENONG North Dandenong (129 and 1/10) was left in disarray after Springvale South (2/137dec) powered through the visitors. It was a disaster from the start as the visitors succumbed early and often. Shane Leonard (30) and Uzair Qureshi (29) held back the tide, but the Northerners were easily dismissed. Nathan King (4/25) and Malinga Bandara (3/34) had a field day as North Dandenong wleft the crease in the 48th over.

King (39) was among it again early as he worked alongside Michael Vandort (62) to punish the Northern force. Perhaps the Bloods thought it was a Twenty20 as the tandem belted an incredible 137 off 25 overs.

Craig Slocombe called his charges back in for one last spell - snaring a wicket before stumps.

LYNDALE v PARKFIELD WITH work cut out for it chasing next week, Lyndale (0/7) will be hunting hugely after Parkfield’s (224) monster tally. oe Barrett (80), Shane Bell (44) and Travis D’Souza (40) flayed the ball from the top spots. Barrett was sensational early as he belted the Dales around Barry Powell Reserve, but missed out on a maiden Turf 1 century after Ben Montgomery (2/49) finally got his man. continued the good-natured hitting.

The visitors went the tonk and put the last runs in the ledger by stumps, as wickets fell fast but Lyndale’s chase grew. Ciaron Connolly (4/72) held up his end.

BUCKLEY RIDGES v HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS Batting Heinz Southern Districts (0/19) into oblivion, Buckley Ridges (283) belted the fellow top-four side to leave a huge chase. After Michael Davies (4/65) snared two immediate scalps, the 2/0 score line looked horrendous, but it turned around quickly as Susantha Pradeep (120) and Jayson Hobbs (46) returned fire. by Davies, but Pradeep carried on with Dan Watson (33) and Suren Ekanayake (28) to belt his first ton.

The frenzy ended early as Pradeep fell to Matt Downe (3/62), leaving the tail to swat another 70 after his demise. Heinz remained 11-strong at stumps with a whopper to hunt down at Park Oval.

MORDIALLOC v DANDENONG WEST The woes of the reigning premier Mordialloc (145) continued as Dandenong West (2/23) charged through the home side. After falling to 8/78, the Bloodhounds were revived by Leon Kennedy (49) and under-15 Victorian schoolboys squad member Jakob Woinarski (27), but Peter Atkinson (3/52) and Andrew Harry (3/20) made sure the bowlers’ job ended early. The visitors lost the skipper Matt Sofoulis (7) towards the end of the day, with the nightwatchman Atkinson (0no) surviving until stumps.

Coach’s enviable record

By JARROD POTTER STEPPING aside as Dandenong’s SEABL women’s coach was an extremely difficult decision Larissa Anderson knew she had to make.

Leaving an unassailable legacy in SEABL coaching circles, Anderson vacated her winterleague position to focus on the WNBL summer side, after receiving her dream job earlier this year.

Anderson had been weighing up whether or not to continue juggling WNBL and SEABL as she did this year to great effect as Dandenong won a fourth SEABL championship in a 76-63 grand final triumph over Kilsyth.

But with her time and energy focused on the Rangers WNBL campaign, Anderson admitted it was a tough, but necessary decision to resign.

“It’s extremely hard - I’d love to keep doing it,” Anderson said.

“It gets to a point where I’ve been going back and forth for the last 18 months and it’s not fair on my family or the club - it’s fair to give another person a go with an amazing club.

“We’ve got Paps’ (Clare Papavs) 300th game next season and I would’ve loved to have coached her then, but as I have told her I wouldn’t miss it for the world and will be there.”

Her SEABL coaching record will stand as one of the league’s finest, as she coached Dandenong to four SEABL championships.

Her SEABL legacy is also reflected in her current WNBL roster with many players - such as Steph Cumming, Aimie Clydesdale, Amelia Todhunter, Alison Downie, Lauren Scherf and Tenaya Phillips - honing their skills in the SEABL side throughout the years.

“It’s been such a special group and will forever be a special group - I’ll still be involved but it’s important for the process and we have a new voice and someone who fits into the Dandenong culture,” Anderson said.

“We’ve kept the group of girls together - there will still be that key core nucleus ready to go and we will be able to build around it.”

Anderson isn’t lost to the SEABL side by any means - she’ll play a significant part in helping develop the side in tandem with the new coach.

“I’m still going to be involved - I’ll be around in the off-season and work with the girls, help at training and still be heavily involved,” Anderson said.

“We want to find someone who is great for the culture that we can build throughout the Dandenong Basketball Association and to be on and stay together so the senior club stays together and that’s why we’ve gone down that process.”

Sting’s winners are a big hit in the boxing ring Tandem colour change

IN BOXING circles it will always be remembered as the Big Sting.

Five boxers from the Sting Gym in Dandenong entered the squared circle for the recent Victorian Amateur Boxing League State Titles - and all five came away as winners.

Elijah Sa’Lesui (Super Heavyweight), Thomas Konstantinidis (Light Middleweight), Jai Ashby Paule (Middleweight) and brothers David (Junior Super Middleweight) and John Mannu (Welterweight) added further lustre to the gym’s shining reputation in the sport.

Five world champions, Commonwealth, South Pacific, Australian and state title holders, head-coach and coowner of Sting Gym Michael Vukovic has seen it all.

“We’ve had a lot of success over the years but, to have five state title winners, this is a pretty big feather in our cap,” Vukovic said.

“It all comes down to hard work and the dedication of our fighters and our trainers.”

Vukovic won’t lay claim to all the credit, Konstantinidis is trained out of the same gym by 747 Fitness owner Kosta Drakoulakos but the boxing, kickboxing, mixed martial arts and mauy thai coach has seen enough in his time to know what separates the men from the boys.

His own career spanned just five fights, based out of Leo Berry’s iconic gym in Richmond, but it was enough to give him a sense of belonging and the urge to teach others.

“I started training probably 25 years ago and the first 12 years were out of my garage in Noble Park,” he said.

“But that grew too big so we moved to Richmond, sharing a gym with a weight-

“We moved to Chelsea for three years and this is our third location in Dandenong.

“We have a gym in Frankston and another in Broadmeadows is on the way.”

But, despite his wealth of knowledge, it’s never too late to learn and a trip to San Francisco changed his training methods forever.

“I couldn’t believe it. Up until then I

was a one-man show, I’d be the pad holder, the trainer, everything, but that trip changed my ideas,” he said.

“They had teams of people training their fighters and it made me swallow my pride and implement the same ideas in my gyms when I got back.

“The game has changed now, there is a lot more science involved now, better nutrition, people are looking after their bodies better, but for me the love of the sport is still the same.”

So is there a potential star on the horizon?

“We have an ex-rugby player, Toese Vousiutu, who I believe is the next big thing in Australian boxing,” he said.

“He’s a freak of nature, he’s already proved he can mix it with the big boys and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the Australian team at next year’s Olympics.”

Sounds like another ‘Big Sting’ might be just around the corner.

BRETT Deledio passing the ball to Shaun Grigg isn’t what you’d expect when watching Endeavour Hills cricket.

The Richmond Football Club tandem traded the black-and-gold for the green-and-gold as they represented Endeavour Hills in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association (VSDCA) Twenty20 competition.

They weren’t just hitand-giggle substitute players, though, as Deledio, in particular, was an exciting junior-age cricketer and claimed an Under 17 National Championship with Victoria before trading in his whites for a footy jumper.

Tuesday’s VSDCA Twenty20 Twilight clash against Croydon also featured St Kilda’s Josh Drummond as the side’s marquee player to add to the Eagles’ firepower.

Deledio’s off-spin caused a couple of headaches but, despite his credentials, the Hills were bowled out for just 94 in reply to Croydon’s 6/157.

Endeavour Hills faced Kew in day-two of VSDCA round five on Saturday.

MOTORING Holden still has the chops HOLDEN Insignia VXR is designed and built by GM-Opel in Germany - but its engine is made in Holden’s Melbourne plant.

From Australia the engine is sent to Europe to be installed in many cars sold globally.

Though the Aussie engine is the big news, there’s plenty of Australian engineering input in many facets of the car which will play an important part of the future for GM-Holden.

Very much a sports sedan, Holden says Insignia VXR will compete directly with the likes of Subaru Liberty and Volkswagen Passat CC. But we wouldn’t be surprised if buyers on a relatively tight budget also considered the Insignia when the can’t quite gather the money to justify an Audi, BMW or Merc of similar size.

Insignia still has basically the same body we tested on the Opel-badged imports that were sold in Australia for a short time a couple of years back.

However, it recently had a significant facelift and, in VXR format, it certainly has a bold and purposeful look that defies the fact the body has been around for almost six years.

The 20-inch wheels fill out the guards nicely and play their part in the bold overall look.

Recaro sports seats provide good side support without being overly aggressive.

The cockpit is where the biggest changes have been introduced.

The instruments now largely electronic, with two 8.0-inch screens.

One scene is used for most, of the major instruments, the other screen for satellite navigation and infotainment displays.

The biggest change here is that the Insignia VXR uses the latest generation of GM’s MyLink

system.

Through Holden’s MyLink you can connect to Bluetooth and access apps keeping them tuned into music, news, other entertainment and satellite navigation.

Embedded apps include Pandora, Stitcher and TuneIn allowing owners to create their own personal stations, stream their favourite podcasts, radio shows and news, and listen to the world’s radio from wherever they are.

Bluetooth connectivity means the touchscreen can be used to wirelessly stream audio files for playback from a paired mobile phone.

There’s a big emphasis on active safety, that is avoiding a crash. As well as excellent handling dynamics and brakes the Holden Insignia VXR there are Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Side Alert, Lane Change Alert, Forward Collision Alert, and Automatic Emergency Braking.

In Opel (and Vauxhall) speak the initials ‘VXR’ indicate this is the high-performance model in the range, in much the same way that HSV stands for ‘quick car’ in Australia.

The VXR is powered by a 2.8-litre turbocharged V6 producing 239 kW of power and a big 435 Nm of torque.

That sort of torque could overwhelm the front wheels of the VXR unless it was backed off at times.

So a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system has been developed.

Power runs through a six-speed automatic transmission.

Engine performance is excellent, with a minimum of turbo lag and heaps of grunt once the turbo is spooling at its best.

Sport mode adds a nice note to the intake and exhaust. And also sharpens up the gearshifts

Fuel consumption isn’t going to be a strong feature of a big turbo-petrol engine that’s getting on in years, but 10 to 13 litres per 100 kilometres on interesting country roads and around town isn’t too bad.

Treated kindly on motorways and flat roads we got fuel use in the seven to eight litre range.

The GM FlexRide suspension can be set to day-to-day driving in Touring mode; Sport for when you want to get serious on the road but retain an element of electronic backup; and VXR mode which is probably best left for track work because the car lets you make most of your own decisions.

FlexRide not only adjusts the damper settings, but also AWD control, steering, throttle and automatic transmission. The results are most impressive.

So confident is Holden in the hot Insignia that it flew selected Australian journalists to the snowfields of southern New Zealand to drive on snow and ice at the Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds - one of the world’s best.
