Screen of hope But even with each determined to make amends, the film does not back away from showing how difficult it is for men to break tendencies that for so long have been normal practice.

An incident occurred during filming and features in the doco, which reminded Sophie how hard it could be for men to change, and the consequences for their partners and children.

“When the guys had setbacks, it felt like a setback for not just the individuals but for our crew as well,” she said.

“I set about trying to see positive change in the lives of these families but that didn’t always occur.

“It’s an important lesson and part of the reality of that kind of work - it works for some and it doesn’t work for others.”

Sophie began her research into Call Me Dad in 2012, but her reasons for pursuing the project date back much further.

“My mother’s father was very violent ... and my mum grew up in a small country town, and neither she nor my grandmother ever really spoke about what happened at home,” she said.

CAN violent men change?

That question will linger in viewers’ minds long after they’ve finished watching the documentary Call Me Dad. The documentary, which will air tonight (Thursday, 26 November) on the ABC to coincide with the White Ribbon initiative, focuses on the inner workings of a men’s behavioural change group in Narre Warren.

Over 16 weeks last year, independent film-maker Sophie Wiesner chronicled the men involved in the group Heavy METAL - short for Men’s Education Towards Anger and Life.

The documentary focuses on three men in particular - each a father and perpetrator of violence - and their families.

Burning ambition

By GARRY HOWE A FIRE lit in the conscience of more than 100 community leaders across Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia as part of the three-year Challenge Family Violence program that will never be extinguished.

That’s the opinion of Christiaan O’Dea from the Department of Justice and Regulation who was part of the ground-breaking project that winds up this month.

“I challenge participants to continue with their work in this area,” he told a recent showcase event at the City of Casey.

“This program has lit a fire within this group that cannot be extinguished.”

The Challenge Family Violence program enlisted the help of predominantly male community leaders across the three municipal areas to pledge their support for the White Ribbon principles and seek to change attitudes and behaviour towards women in their spheres of influence.

They participated in a series of workshops to be better informed about attitudes towards women in society that can lead to family violence - things like gender inequality, stereotyping and male privilege.

Then Cardinia Mayor Leticia Wilmot applauded the initiative as fostering prevention through leadership.

“The program focused on men and the faith and sporting communities and had dedicated women leading the way,” she said.

“It was able to use community leaders as agents for change,” she said.

Casey Mayor Sam Aziz noted that Victoria Police respond to 70,000 family violence cases each year.

“This has to change,” he said.

“We must get to a place where every woman and child feels safe.”

Greater Dandenong councillor Roz Blades closed proceedings with an insightful and personal message.

Cr Blades said she grew up in an area where family violence was rife, yet it remained in the home, behind closed doors.

“People didn’t talk about it, let alone act on it,” she said.

“I am proud to be a part of an

organisation that is taking such a public stance.

Safer steps MULTI-LANGUAGE family violence support is now available from safe steps.

The Family Violence Response Centre launched support brochures in multiple languages for women from non-English-speaking backgrounds at its AGM on Wednesday 18 November.

CEO Annette Gillespie said safe steps aimed to be responsive and accessible to all, and that it had also launched two websites for young people.

The www.safestepschildren.org.au site targets children aged from five to 12 years while www. safestepsyouth.org.au caters for 12 to 18-yearolds.

Ms Gillespie said half of safe steps’ clients were aged under 18, with many women coming through the service fleeing violent homes with their children.

“It is vital that children and young people have access to resources to help them through this traumatic period in their lives,” she said.

“The microsites feature important information written specifically for youth by our family violence specialists.

“The language, images and characters are both appealing and appropriate to the target audiences.

“We hope the sites will be used by schools and community groups to help educate youth about family violence and safe relationships.”

Ms Gillespie said the aim was to help young people to better understand their feelings and what was happening at home and to break the learned behaviour cycle of family violence.

“Children living in homes where there is family violence are in an environment that is unpredictable and filled with tension and fear,” she said.

“The impact can be ongoing and long-lasting.

These children are living with trauma.

“Exposure to domestic violence can have significant psychological, behavioural, health and socioeconomic impacts on children, including depression, anxiety and difficulties in school.

Stand strong together THE teenage girl is beamed live into Dandenong Magistrate’s Court to talk about the havoc wreaked on her family by her father’s explosive temper.

She should be home studying for the VCE exam that awaits her the next day.

Instead, she is describing the emotional and physical violence that punctuates do-

mestic life for her, her mother and sibling.

Whether her father is found guilty or not, the girl and her family are living in a prison as harmful, restrictive and frightening as the real thing.

This week the News once again joins the chorus of voices calling for an end to family violence.

This special edition, published to coincide with this week’s White Ribbon Day, highlights the harrowing stories of victims and reflects on the parade of anger, denial and despair which confront magistrates in their daily work.

We reflect on the Challenge Family Violence project, a collaboration between men across Casey, Greater Dandenong and Car-

dinia, which wound up earlier this year due to a lack of government funding, and speak to police and welfare services about what it is like on the family violence front line.

We think shining a light on this once taboo subject can only help foster understanding and action and help rid our communities of this cruel and destructive scourge.

Family violence victims face frustrating wait for help

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS FAMILY violence incidents are being “triaged” by frustrated Casey police due to a lack of divisional van patrols, claim police officers.

A Casey-based police member in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court witness box this month said his divisional van was delayed during a family violence callout on a weekday midafternoon.

This was due to the divvy being the only one available in the municipality at the time, which, he added, was often the case.

Police Association Victoria spokesman Sergeant Wayne Gatt said such a

situation was “not atypical” due to increasing workloads and diminishing frontline resources at police stations.

“There’s circumstances that can occur quite easily where you have three or four divisional vans tied up and only have one available for new jobs.

“There’s no fat in the resources.”

Family violence callouts, although a high priority for police, were being “triaged” and forced back in a queue of jobs, Sgt Gatt said.

“It’s a growing trend where members of the public have to wait.”

Sgt Gatt said he had received calls from Casey police officers in “frustration and despair”; they had “little respite” from back-to-back night and

weekend shifts.

Funding for frontline policing’s divisional vans and watch-house crews was “less than ever before”, he said.

It was being diverted into taskforces such as the family violence unit.

The unit was a “great, commendable initiative” focused on recidivist offenders but a divisional van was still needed for frontline domestic violence, Sgt Gatt said.

“The rationale is taskforce policing reduces the workload for frontline divisions.

“That’s sometimes the case, but there will always be a call for a divisional van to attend crime scenes and accident scenes.

She said general-duties police were also supported by divisional vans from surrounding areas, and specialist units such as the Critical Incident Response Team, family violence and highway patrol teams.

“The Casey community does, and will continue to, receive a 24-hour police response from resources across the Police Service Area (PSA).

“We are keen to build a greater level of flexibility in our rostering and deployment models, so if a high level of service demand is needed - for example, to respond to a spike in crime rates in a certain area - then we have the flexibility to move our police around.”

A teenage family violence victim in Casey-Cardinia told Star News Group she and her grandmother waited for police for an hour while sheltering from her enraged, ice-addicted boyfriend in October.

As they waited, the man screamed threats from outside the house, smashed five windows and sent messages that he’d kill the pair.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said there was “never just one divisional van patrol rostered on in Casey”.

“The number of divisional van patrols rostered on is dependent on need and is increased during peak times.”

Respect is the answer

These are the words of Stephanie Saunders spoken on Thursday 19 November, reflecting a communal response from people who witness others being victimized by family violence but don’t know where to turn for help.

Stephanie, the President of the Casey Multi-Faith Network, was hosting the group’s annual White Ribbon luncheon when she asked the rhetorical question.

From April 2014 to March 2015 there were 3759 family incidents reported in Casey compared to 3636 in the same period a year earlier - the most of any local government area.

Meanwhile, the total number of recorded offences in Casey rose by almost 12.9 per cent in the same period, with 18,122 incidents reported in Casey compared to 16,056 a year earlier.

The White Ribbon event took place at the Casey Council chambers where the three keynote speakers addressed a packed audience which included Casey Mayor Sam Aziz and councillors Damien Rosario and Mick Morland.

The guest speakers at the luncheon included Community Development Officer for the Challenge Family Violence Project Dr Crystal Bruton, InTouch Inc Program Manager Roshan Bhandary and Victoria

Police officer Maha Sukkar.

Dr Bruton called on people of all faiths to “work together”.

“We can all work together, as a community, to prevent violence against women and their children,” she said.

“To prevent violence against women, we must address inequalities between men and women in our society and ensure women are treated with respect.

“Faith leaders can play an important role in promoting equity and respect toward women and speak out against attitudes that accept or support violence within their communities.”

Ms Bhandary said the aim of InTouch was for women and children from “diverse cultural backgrounds to be safe and free of violence.”

Ms Sukkar, who as well as being Lebanese is a police officer for the Southern Metro Multicultural Liaison Unit, has worked for many years to try to break down cultural barriers that often lead to family violence.

“My message to the community is that the police are here to help make you feel safe,” she said.

“The police want to hear about any type of family violence or violence in general that you experience, even if it is not a crime.

“We need to know what is happening in the community otherwise we cannot help you in preventing the crime.”

The Lebanese-born Maha was the first Victorian police officer to wear a hijab as part of her uniform.

And now Senior Constable Sukkar, based at Dandenong Police Station, is one of just two multicultural liaison officers who work in the southern metro region.

In her own words, helping to prevent family violence has been a “passion” of Maha’s and made her a perfect guest speaker for Casey Multi-Faith Network annual White Ribbon luncheon, held at Casey Council chambers on Thursday 19 November.

In her line of work, Maha sees how family violence can wreak havoc within multicultural communities and she understands how important her role is in changing societal stereotypes.

She deals with about two cases a week related to forced marriage.

Laws passed by the Labor government in 2013 made it illegal to coerce, threaten or deceive someone into marriage.

“Working with multicultural communities, family violence is very rife ... because it’s the culture, it’s the way we were brought up, it’s the way things are done,” she told the audience.

“Marital rape is right now my absolute work ... I hate it but I work with it, because it’s really, really hard.

“Forced marriage is another form of family violence that I manage.

So much more than a black eye

The issue inside the homes of Casey residents at an above average rate comes in various forms and hurts victims far beyond a black eye.

Head of the Casey Family Violence Unit (CFVU) Sergeant Ian Lane said one partner exercising control over the other is the real crux of the universal problem.

“Family violence comes in the nonphysical form as well as the physical such as threats, psychological, economical and verbal abuse,” Sgt Lane said.

“Awareness campaigns that show victims with black eyes often bring it home for people but don’t highlight other forms that women are falling victim to.”

With 37 years’ experience in the force and 15 of them patrolling the

streets of Casey Sgt Lane has been in charge of the CFVU for two years and said threats and economical abuse is what he sees most of.

“Contrary to popular belief, most of our work isn’t offences of physical violence,” he said.

“We see economical abuse where one partner is being held against their will and threats are made to take away credit cards or the partner is only given $10 or $15 a week to live off.

“Or money is only provided for household costs and nothing is left for them to buy things they may want.”

Sgt Lane said controlling male partners who solely delegate finances can also segregate their partner as well.

“Isolating a partner and ensuring they don’t leave the home and aren’t allowed to mix in a social circle or make friends is another form of abuse,” he said.

Coercive and threatening behaviour in a non-sexual manner is another facet

“I’m urging people to report. If you know your neighbour is having an issue with her husband, please report it.

“At least call me personally, go the police station at Dandenong and ask for Maha.

“Everyone knows who Maha is.”

She said she was happy to sit down and talk to anyone.

“Especially if that person is from a multicultural background and is scared of police,” Maha said.

“There’s always ways of doing things.”

“Again it’s still under the carpet, it’s big these days, especially among multicultural communities.

“It happens to 13-year-olds and 14-year-olds, marrying them off to a 30-year-old and forcing them to get married.”

Drawing on recent statistics, Maha noted that there had been 390 reports of family violence in Casey just in the past month.

And she said acts of violence against women in public were becoming more prevalent.

“There’s a lot lately and there’s more now since the Paris attacks, unfortunately, (against) women who are obviously Muslims or obviously religious,” she said.

of family violence and Sgt Lane said such abuse can come in very simple ways.

“Threats like ‘if dinner is not on the table by the time I am home’ I will do such and such to you and a lot of verbal, emotional abuse goes on with this type of family violence,” he said.

The typical family violence offender is a male aged 18 to 45 years old and Sgt Lane said the CFVU doesn’t see a lot of female offenders.

“Females assaulting males may not be reported to same level but I could count on one hand the number of those incidents over the last couple of months,” he said.

Sgt Lane encourages anyone who is falling victim or knows of someone experiencing violence in the home to make a police report.

“The rise in family violence offences is a good thing,” he said.

“If family violence reports went down I’d ask myself why because I

Men still behaving badly

“There’s an obligation on you. If you breach that, there’s consequences.

“If there’s not (consequences), then the whole thing is meaningless.”

Men in denial are commonplace in family violence cases at the court.

They are led from the police cells to the dock often in shock. Often they have been arrested the night before, and never previously been taken into custody before.

It’s part of the police’s stated proarrest and pro-remand policy against such offenders, and the court’s determination to fast-track these cases.

Another incredulous accused man denies charges of choking his ex by the

throat despite an observable red swelling being found on her neck.

He had told police: “F***. I’m not getting charged with that s***.”

The man didn’t initially appear at court because he was more worried about losing his job.

When he did appear, the magistrate offered him a community-corrections order for a guilty plea. But the accused declined and decided to contest the charges.

“So does he prefer to go to jail?” a disbelieving judge said.

“You’d be looking at a term of imprisonment for strangulation. It’s taken seriously because of the potential for homicide.

“I’m not asking for you take unpaid community work but to engage with a men’s behaviour program.”

After a talk with his lawyer, the accused asked for some more time to consider his options.

It’s strange how often the men in the dock seem so small and meek.

Their silence is in such contrast to the screaming threats to kill their partner, and the blows they inflict within the sanctum of the family home.

Sometimes their victims fall silent, particularly when the perpetrator is a husband who, if convicted, risk having their bridging visa revoked and being returned to their homeland.

THE man accused of more than 6000 intervention order breaches can’t believe he’s in court.

He’s already told the police that the charges are “bulls***”.

As he waits hours, the stronglybuilt businessman mulls over how he and his five employees are losing a day of work.

He fumes with his arms crossed as he tells the magistrate he’ll plead guilty just so he can bring the ordeal to an end.

In his impatience, he’s shoved aside a Victoria Legal Aid lawyer in midsentence as she’s addressed the judge on his behalf.

He makes light of the nearly 6500 calls and texts to his ex-partner in two months - all in breach of an intervention order.

There was never any violence or threats, the man says.

The calls and texts were usually instigated by the ex, who wanted to remove the intervention order anyway.

“It’s usually about money,” he says.

“Basically, someone doesn’t get their own way so this is a way of getting at me.”

At Dandenong Magistrates’ Court a magistrate often tries to recalibrate the accused’s victim-blaming attitude.

Today, the judge told the man: “A lot of people don’t agree with the law.

That’s why they go to jail.

“I have to say you’re on the footstep of jail.”

The magistrate said it was irrelevant whether an estimated 4000 of the calls and messages were instigated by

On other occasions, victims refuse to shirk the issue.

Recently a teenager, on the day before her VCE English exam, testified on video-link against her father.

She spoke of her dad being in “one of those moods”, of him trying to hug and kiss his ex-partner and wanting to become a family again.

The usual stuff, she wearily called it. “You get used to his behaviour.”

She described her dad following them as they drove away, her sister crying due to the situation, him following her mum in the house, the slamming of doors, banging and yelling.

She stayed in the car, holding down the door lock to stop her father coming in.

“I keep sticking up for mum and he told me I was a disgrace to him.”

When her grandmother called her phone, she was in tears, worried and scared, she says over the court’s video screen.

The daughter said her relationship with Dad was confusing. “I just avoid him because I know he gets angry very easily.

“He gets in arguments over silly things all the time.”

As she testified, her father sat hunched over in the courtroom with tears welling in his eyes.

Over the video link, her father is invisible to her, as he is outside the court as well.

THE first stage of the City of Casey’s new council chambers was kicked off, with Brookfield Multiplex Constructions Pty. Ltd chosen to bring the $125 million project to life.

With a proven track record and a resume reading Federation Square, Royal Melbourne Showgrounds and the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, “Brookfield Multiplex was the standout team” for the job, Mayor Sam Aziz said.

On Monday 23 November the construction giant met with Casey council to formalise the agreement.

“Today officially marks the beginning of the construction process for Bunjil Place. This is an exciting day for the City of Casey and a significant milestone in the project’s timeline,” Cr Aziz said.

The build which will be ongoing for the next two years will be the only re-

gional community facility of its kind, and Brookfield Multiplex managing director Graham Cottam said his team was thrilled to take on a “one-of-a-kind project”.

“Brookfield has industry-leading, internationally accredited systems and processes, and we are ready and excited to hit the ground running and work with the council and Casey community to deliver Bunjil Place by late 2017,” Mr Cottam said.

In a statement from the Casey council, Cr Aziz said the “community can expect to see Brookfield Multiplex on site this week (23- 27), with construction works to commence within a few weeks.”

The construction project is expected to create more than 1200 job opportunities 700 of which will be local.

The new facility will include an 800seat theatre, studio, art gallery, community library and meeting rooms, civic centre and council offices.

IT SEEMS hard to get a drink of water these days.

A burglar fled from a vacated, heavily firedamaged home when police arrived, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard last week.

He had scaled the home’s Cyclone security fencing, taken out a TV and collected a pile of copper wiring ripped out of the home.

The raider told police who arrested him several streets away that he had just been thirsty and looking to grab a drink of water.

The thief allegedly stole car keys from an elderly resident’s home in a retirement village and then the resident’s car out of a locked garage.

All this happened while the old man was sleeping in bed.

Apparently the burglar, who was facing a lengthy jail term for aggravated burglary, struggled with the concept of ‘retirement village’.

In his own defence, he told police he had no idea his victim was elderly.

TWO men’s confrontation at a Bunnings

roundabout turned into a lengthy bun-fight in court.

According to one man’s version he had slowed down in his ute and trailer for a mum and her toddler near the crossing.

Then he’s been overtaken by a guy in a four-wheel drive who, in the process, scraped their vehicle on a median strip sign.

The first driver has then been blamed for side-swiping the four-wheel-drive and charged with leaving the scene of the accident without exchanging details.

“He started ranting and raving. I told him he was a bloody idiot,” the man told the court.

“There’s no way I’m going to give details to a guy like him.

With 2 million geocaches worldwide, Casey Fields was one of Victoria’s main destinations this month.

The Melbourne Adventure was launched in Casey on Sunday 15 November and councillor Geoff Ablett said the digital orienteering is a fantastic and innovative addition to the municipality.

“More than 1000 people visited Casey Fields to get involved in what is sure to be the largest geocaching event held in the southern hemisphere,” Cr Ablett said.

Participants on the day had the opportunity to engage in canoeing, kayaking and tree climbing all while navigating using their mobile GPS.

THE regular media briefing with Casey police was a bit different this week.

With the regular meeting room occupied by a conference, reporters were ushered into a room on the ground floor that barely fit a table and chairs.

But although it was cramped, the journalists still walked away from the briefing with enough news to fill the crime pages.

It was 20 years ago when Dave, who started the group in 2004, realised he had to change. “My partner and I were invited to a family function and we had a disagreement before the function and I spat the dummy and didn’t want to go,� he previously told Star News. “I went to the party and made a fool of myself, I got a bit of steel pipe out of my work truck and started smashing up the car in front of a lot of people and children and I realised when I saw the looks on those kids’ faces that I’d really scared these guys.�

Dave shares his story in the documentary, and draws on his own history to help the men in the group. “With David and Jacqui, it’s their relationship with the participants that enabled my own relationships with those in the group to develop,� Sophie said. “They (David and Jacqui) are very compassionate, very skilful, and very brave people. “They feel the film’s a very realistic portrayal of the work they do - it portrays both the successes and the limitations of their work. “Men’s behavioural change programs do not change all men, and it is not the answer to every family’s problem, but it can change some men and improve the safety of women and children.�

FOR 11 years Fiona Link-Freeman has worked with women trying to escape and save their children from abusive relationships.

The Windermere Victim’s Assistance counsellor advises them and mentors them, but at the end of the day, she said, it was up to the victim to make a decision to act.

This makes the response a victim receives the first time she seeks help utterly crucial to what happens next. “Usually, the first disclosure a woman makes, that response will determine whether she continues to seek support,� she said. “Because they’ve been brainwashed ... �

In just over a decade with Windermere in Narre Warren, Fiona has seen family violence campaigning increase tenfold.

But the insidious societal scourge still continues to tear families apart, particularly in Casey and Cardinia where many of Fiona’s clients are from.

and work with them, to be able to find ways to re-establish their rights and space in the world.�

Fiona works with Katrina Herbert, the team leader of Windermere’s counselling program.

She oversees a range of different programs offered by the organisation as it continues to support women and children suffering from abusive relationships.

This includes the six-week Healthy Women Healthy Relationships program, co-ordinated by Fiona.

Katrina concedes that she and other carers can only do so much, and at the end of the day she understands the victims need to be willing to seek change.

But for as long as she can, the Windermere team leader will continue to mentor these women and children, and help to lead them to a better, and safer, life. “It’s more about the advocacy role, being able to support women and children to access their rights and them being able to have a voice,�

Rally round the road

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT’S been closed for 11 years, and there’s still no resolution in sight for Evans Road.

Directly affecting Cranbourne West, Lynbrook and Lyndhurst residents among hundreds more who sit in bottleneck traffic each day - Evans Road is a major concern for the 150 local residents who met at a recent rally.

It’s the road that makes many southeast commuters late on a daily basis, and is stripping them of “quality time with their family”, Casey Councillor Amanda Stapledon said.

“If a temporary solution was made

by VicRoads and the State Government, the whole community would benefit,” she said at a recent rally.

“It would form a more engaged and happy community - everywhere Lyndhurst residents go they have to endure significant traffic jams of up to half an hour.

“Opening Evans Road would give them another option, link them to services in Lynbrook and ease congestion at the Thompsons Road roundabout.”

Currently closed due to safety concerns, Acting VicRoads Metro South East Director of Transport and Planning Ms Savoula Lidis said the next step for Evans Road was under inves-

tigation.

“We have met with Casey council engineers to discuss options on how to open Evans Road without adversely affecting the safety and capacity of this location,” Ms Lidis said.

“There were a number of options suggested, and we both (council and VicRoads) agreed to investigate these over the coming weeks.”

Cr Stapledon said the council was ready to re-open the road four years ago, but VicRoads decided against it due to the unsafe intersection at South Gippsland Highway, Hallam Road and Evans Road.

“VicRoads said the intersection

needs to be upgraded before Evans Road could be opened and council have since put forward temporary options for a re-open because this is of top priority for residents and the council.

“But there is no political will by the State Government to fix the intersection,” Cr Stapledon said.

Left as it is, the closed road is causing a different set of safety concerns with drivers illegally ignoring barriers and signs and taking the grassy route alongside the train tracks to avoid long traffic delays.

Casey Cr Damien Rosario said “people are taking their lives into their

own hands”.

“Every day people are driving through the closed road and it’s becoming a problem because of the alternative option which is a big detour,” he said.

Rubbish dumping at the closed section of Evans Road is another issue, Cr Stapledon said.

“A massive rubbish clean-up was recently done because people use it as a dumping ground - and it’s been this way for as long as I’ve been on council,” she said.

A DAILY five-minute trip down the road for one Lyndhurst mum takes on average 45 minutes due to the Evans road closure.

Carrie McKerlie-Gregson’s sons, four-year-old Parker and one-year-old Preston, spend an extra 40 minutes at their childcare centre because their mum is stuck in traffic.

“We chose that childcare centre close to five years ago because we had been told Evans Road was going to open. All they needed to do was to put in a train crossing and we were all celebrating,” Carrie said.

“Then we got told otherwise and centres much closer to us have opened up but my children

are settled in and we don’t want to move them now.”

Choosing not to illegally drive through the blocked off road like many of her neighbours, Carrie said the round trip to pick up her sons from an address off Evans Road is “just a mess”.

“Something needs to be decided as soon as possible - we all have the same concerns about the bottleneck on Thompsons Road because three lanes go down to one,” she said.

“And that’s where I spend the majority of my time stuck in traffic and the feelings among other residents are that someone’s going to get seriously injured by illegally crossing because of the train.”

Carrie said the road closure is a hot topic on the Marriott Waters Residents’ Facebook page with feelings of isolation being another problem.

“Lyndhurst residents do feel segregated from the wider community because there is a road to get us into Lynbrook which would be quick and easy that we can’t use and Lynbrook has so many facilities we don’t,” she said.

Carrie said drivers who are cutting through the Merinda Park train station car park are adding to the traffic chaos.

“They make it worse for people who are doing the right thing because it causes more of a bottleneck and if Evans Road was opened they wouldn’t do it,” she said.

“There was talk of a blackout (while driving),” the lawyer said.

The 27-year-old accused also had four prior drivingwhile-suspended convictions.

Magistrate Gerard Bryant said Bogovich’s walkout on the dentist after a procedure of up to two hours was “heartless”.

“It shows complete and utter contempt and disregard for someone’s hard work.

“Maybe in Beverly Hills (veneers) might be considered an emergency but not in the ordinary sense of the word.”

Mr Bryant noted a Corrections Victoria report assessing Bogovich as a high risk of reoffending.

“They reckon you’re going to fail. It’ll be a challenge to yourself to prove everyone wrong.”

Bogovich was jailed three months, followed by 100 hours of unpaid work and judicial monitoring as part of a 12-month community corrections order.

Most of those work hours could be converted into programs such as drug counselling and anger management.

Bogovich was banned from driving for two years.

Inner Wheel turns slowly

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH INNER Wheel Cranbourne is delivering close to $8000 to local charities this Christmas, but that annual boost for aid organisations might all be over in 2017.

President of Cranbourne’s Inner Wheel Charmaine Skewes said she was concerned for the longevity of the women’s friendship group.

“We are struggling to get members and when our doors shut, there’ll be no more fund-raising from us for Cranbourne,” Ms Skewes said.

Delivering much-needed money to the Cranbourne In-

formation and Support Service (CISS) each year along with two or three other chosen charities, Ms Skewes said the rewarding results would be sorely missed in the community.

“This year we are giving $4000 to CISS, $2000 to the WAYSS Women’s Refuge and $1000 to Who Cares We do for Christmas toys for needy children,” she said.

“Every year at Christmas time we empty our bank account for community not-forprofit organisations like the soup bus, respite for full time carers and school children in need of uniforms and books.”

Ms Skewes is confident the group which has been operating in Cranbourne for more than 20 years will continue next year but said without a president and secretary willing to put in the time the group will be forced to stop in 2017.

“We have 32 members and we meet once a month to discuss what we’ll do and who we’ll help, but we also have guest speakers - it’s a great friendship club because we all look after each other,” she said.

“All sorts of people are in Inner Wheel and of all ages, there is no status symbol and we are not religious, but we do need new committee members.”

admissions to police, said he was helping his girlfriend with a “registration transfer issue” but denied the assaults.

Also in 2013, Bogovic requested emergency surgery at a Cranbourne West dental clinic under the nom-de-plume ‘Steven Yannick’ and using invalid Medicare details.

For the negotiated price of $400, the accused received a veneers operation at 6.30pm.

After the procedure, he told the dentist he left his wallet in the car and didn’t return.

His fingerprints left on the dental clinic’s forms were identified by police.

Bogovic also faced shop theft and assault charges for pushing a female store manager several times and fleeing with his girlfriend and $152 of stolen underwear, bras and thongs from a Best and Less in Keysborough in October.

Last year, Bogovic’s car clipped a vehicle and forced it in the gutter as he overtook it at a Princes Highway intersection at Clayton, the court heard.

After failing to start his own car at the scene, Bogovic fled on foot from the pregnant victim without exchanging details.

The accused committed three petrol drive-offs from a Mulgrave servo in May and June, as well as seven drivingwhile-suspended charges over the past two years.

A FORMER pro-boxer on the run for two years has been jailed over deceptions including fleeing from a Cranbourne West dentist without paying for a veneers procedure.

Jamie Bogovic, 27, had been hand-picked by world champion Jeff Fenech and won six of six fights during his career, his lawyer told a court on 23 November.

During a break from his training regime, Bogovich’s “world came crashing down” he became lost and started using ice, his lawyer said.

The accused had been on the run for so long because “he had obvious concerns for his liberty”, and had plans to revive his boxing career in Newcastle, the lawyer said.

Bogovich pleaded guilty to a string of offences including pretending to be a private investigator and trying to induce money from a Sandhurst household in 2013.

When his ruse was rejected, Bogovic became aggressive towards the two residents and dragged one of them out the front door towards his car, the court heard.

He struck the female victim to the face. The other resident who stepped in was pushed against a wall and punched in the guts, police prosecutor Senior Constable Dani Lord said.

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD EXTRA lanes will be added to the Monash Freeway in Melbourne’s outer south-east, with plans for a $400 million upgrade to the major arterial unveiled by the State Government on the weekend.

Under the proposal, announced on Sunday following weeks of speculation, the freeway will be widened to five lanes running each way between EastLink and the South Gippsland Highway, and three lanes each way further out to Clyde Road.

Premier Daniel Andrews joined Roads Minister Luke Donnellan and Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley on Sunday morning in Hallam to announce the project, which is expected to go to tender in mid-2016, with construction slated to begin in 2017, and expected to be finished the following year.

Roads Minister Luke Donnellan confirmed Labor would look to “partner” with the Federal Government to fund the upgrade, with some media outlets reporting they were looking for the Commonwealth to chip in as much as half of the estimated cost.

But Mr Donnellan wouldn’t specify how much would be sought from his Federal counterparts.

In October it was reported how the Turnbull Government was believed to have agreed to unlock the $1.5 billion East West Link money allocated to the State Government, provided it will be used on projects like the Monash Freeway.

“This is a $400 million upgrade and we’ll be looking to partner with the Commonwealth on this and many other major projects across Victoria,” Mr Donnellan said on Monday.

“The government will proceed with the Monash Upgrade regardless of the outcome of the market-led proposal,

Hunt for dirt bike thief POLICE are hunting a man believed to be involved in a spate of dirt bike thefts in Blind Bight, Pearcedale and Devon Meadows.

The man, who has been interrupted twice and spotted several other times, is thought to have been allegedly behind six burglaries throughout the area. Dirt bikes were stolen from sheds and garages.

Police have released images of the man as well as images of three bikes stolen in the recent burglaries.

The male is described as aged in his twenties, Caucasian and slim.

He was spotted on one occasion riding a loud road bike in Pearcedale.

With the freeway construction to

start the same year as the previously announced Pakenham rail corridor upgrade - 2017 - concerns have been raised about traffic congestion.

Mr Donnellan admitted there would be “some disruptions and inconvenience to residents during the construction phase” but added the government would “manage the disruption as best we can to minimise any inconvenience.”

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH WITH a little help from her dad, Sahana Rudresh beat the rest of the state in a school writing competition.

Sahana from Rangebank Primary School was announced the winner of the Indian Essay competition in front of Premier Daniel Andrews and a crowd of 40,000 people at the Diwali Festival on Saturday 7 November.

The essay was to be about Australia and India’s official national days which

are both recognised on 26 January.

“It took me two days to write it, my dad helped me write about the similarities of the two events and how they are celebrated in India and Australia,” the 11-year-old said.

The grade five student and her family said the win came as a total surprise on the day and so did the return tickets to India.

“As I was walking up the Federation Square stage to collect my trophy my little sister was yelling out ‘I want the

other ticket’,” Sahana said.

Up against 3000 other grade five and six students, Sahana said she was proud of her achievement.

“We will buy two more tickets so my whole family can go over and visit my cousins,” she said.

Sahana’s newest trophy will take pride of place on her study desk where she practices writing with her dad after school.

“I still have to Skype my family in India to tell them the good news!” she said.

WHEN the Shopping on Clyde shopping centre opens on 4 December it won’t just be a new amenity for the community it will be the fulfilment of the latest dream of local businesswoman Judy Clarkson.

In a long and full life, Judy has often seen a need in the community and moved to fill it, starting in childcare in the late ’60s and including many and varied projects over the years.

“Life has been a journey, you need a vision and if you work towards it one step at a time anything can be accomplished,” Judy said.

“I began Cranbourne Daycare and Kindergarten Centre in 1968 and my aim was to cater to the small minority of women choosing to enter the workforce and to provide quality care for their children and my own.

“After the first 12 months, more and more women had entered the workforce and the demand for childcare facilities in Cranbourne was growing.

“The demand for places had also

increased and to answer this need I employed a Mothercraft nurse and a kindergarten teacher to assist and enhance the early development of our children.”

However always one to look for a new challenge and with the help and support of her two daughters and husband, the family turned their thoughts to aged care.

“I purchased a 40 acre site again in Cranbourne,” she said.

“With the help of my family we wanted to create a place to retire where you could maintain your independence and your dignity. The concept of Blue Hills was created.”

Along with her beloved children and grandchildren Judy said her business ventures continue to be a source of pride and joy.

When her husband died in March 2014, Judy and her daughters looked for a distraction.

“The middle of 2014 we really needed a distraction, so the shopping centre plans began to become a reality and Shopping on Clyde was born..”

By ANEEKA SIMONIS THERE are many reasons why Megan Quinn, co-founder of a $3.4 billion high-end fashion retailer, is an international success.

At a recent Casey-Cardinia Business Breakfast, the 51-year-old business genius spoke on the journey that led her to birthing luxury retailer Neta-Porter.

Her most important piece of advice to business operators: “move to the beat of your own drum”.

Net-a-Porter was released to the world in 1999 before online retailing was commonplace.

Unlike many pioneering businesses at the time, Net-a-Porter survived the dot com bust - a feat achieved by constant innovation and two-way communication with consumers.

“Innovation doesn’t need to be extraordinary. You just have to do something different. Something a little beyond what the customer expects to exceed expectations,” Ms Quinn said, as she spoke to a crowd of local business owners on Wednesday 25 November.

When the high-end fashion retailer, stocking everything from Alexander McQueen to Balmain, Dolce and Gabbana, Fendi and Vallentino, was launched, it was done so with no re-

search into or experience in the market.

Ms Quinn described the early founding years as ‘constructive anarchy’ - explaining that dominant ideologies about the industry were ignored in the development phases in order to create “something different”.

Drawing on the words of late businesswoman Anita Roddick, Ms Quinn said she has long stood by the need for uniquity: “If you do things well, do them better. Be daring, be first, be different, be just.”

But Net-a-Porter was not Ms Quinn’s only entrepreneurial success.

In the lead up to co-founding the billion-dollar business, the strong business woman worked in advertising, started the cleaning company Partners in Grime as well as founded consultancy firm Q&Co. The daughter of a town publican, Ms Quinn admitted she learnt the ropes to operating a successful business from her dad at a young age.

“I lived in pubs from a young age,” she said.

“My dad showed me to lead by example. He was always fair and sometimes needed to be firm. I watched him build an authentic relationship with his staff and customers,” she said.

That early insight taught her another of her most important lessons:

“You’re never too senior to pick up a broom”.

Ms Quinn is now a non-executive director of UNICEF Australia and Specialty Fashion Group, and an Ambassador for Fitted for Work.

She was named the 15th most powerful woman in Australian retail in 2013 by Inside Retail.

Ms Quinn founded Net-a-Porter alongside three others including friend Natalie Massanet, Ms Massanet’s husband Arnaud, and Ms Quinn’s former husband Mark.

White, Rice and Mutimer

By JARROD POTTER BEACONSFIELD team mates Brandon White (pick 40) and Bailey Rice (father-son pick 49) are off to St Kilda together while Narre Warren midfielder Kurt Mutimer (pick 57) will go to West Coast to cap off a phenomenal night for the Dandenong Stingrays at the AFL National Draft.

It was an incredibly successful outing for the Stingrays with six players drafted - the most of any club in Australia - starting at the top with Jacob Weitering heading to Carlton at pick 1.

After Kieran Collins (pick 26) was picked by the Bulldogs it was an anxious wait for the remaining Stingrays, but the good news from Adelaide filtered through after a tense couple of rounds.

Sitting on the couch with his parents, girlfriend Lily and a huge contingent of cousins, aunts, uncles and friends at his Berwick home, White couldn’t believe it after the good news was read.

“Pick 40, St Kilda Football Club,” AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said.

“Brandon White”.

The Dandenong defender had just become an AFL footballer and to the delight of his family, he would also stay in Victoria.

“Unbelievable - you captured the video which I’m happy to share with anyone - it’s so surreal,” White said. “It hasn’t sunk in yet - I was in tears and

enjoying it with the family was unbelievable.

“It’s not too far away, so Mum and Dad will be a bit shattered that I’m still at home - but I’m excited to be going down there and earning my respect from the team mates, coaching staff and all the hard work is ahead really.”

Rice had to wait slightly longer to get his name called as St Kilda matched the pick 49 bid to head off to the same club his father Dean played 116 games at through the ’80s and ’90s.

“It’s crazy - I was just watching it with family and friends and I’m over the moon,” Rice said. “I’m lost for words ... didn’t think the Saints were going to match it (Richmond’s bid) at first - but I was pretty confident they would.”

Rice thought the battles between him and White as junior footballers two great South East Juniors dynamos wearing number 23 - were fantastic from way back when, but had really enjoyed sharing time in the backline with White in recent times.

“We’ve had our good battles in Endeavour Hills versus Beacy, but then team mates at Stingrays and now going onto the AFL - it’s unbelievable really,” Rice said.

Instead of heading to Schoolies in Queensland later this week, Rice would be on a different trip to the Sunshine State, as he and White start preseason with the Saints and get stuck

into their careers ahead.

Kurt Mutimer was the other local footballer inducted into the AFL as he became part of the West Coast Eagles with pick 57.

From Narre North Foxes, to Narre Warren and now he’s onto the AFL as Mutimer makes the trip-of-a-lifetime to join West Coast on Sunday.

“It’s a dream come true - you dream about this night ever since you were a little kid and for it to happen I was speechless,” Mutimer said. “The family is stoked for me and I couldn’t be happier.”

Waiting until the lower-end of the draft was a nervous experience for him, but Mutimer, his girlfriend Kim, friends and family erupted once the Eagles’ pick came through.

“I was getting pretty anxious hearing everyone else’s names getting called out, but it came to West Coast’s pick 57 and I had this funny feeling and luckyily enough my name was called out.”

The other Stingray was the biggest shock of the night as Liam Hulett, who had missed most of the season through an ankle injury, managed to earn a place on Melbourne’s list with pick 42.

Stingrays coach Craig Black was thrilled with the club’s efforts - getting six players onto AFL lists in one of the greatest nights for the local TAC Cup organisation.

“It’s a fantastic result for us at the Stingrays with six players drafted - if

you told me that at the start of the year I’d take it any day of the week.

“It’s great work and recognition for all the hard work of the coaches at the Stingrays - from Under 15s, 16s all the way up to 18s, and everyone involved in the TAC Cup program at the Stingrays.”

Rep footy takes a new twist as city and bush collide

By DAVID NAGEL and RUSSELL BENNETT JUST four years after a major restructure of the AFL Victoria Country Championship, representative football is set for a new twist with city and country leagues set to collide.

The instigator has been the Victorian Amateur Football Association’s (VAFA) decision to pull the pin on representative football in 2016, meaning the five remaining metropolitan leagues - Eastern, Essendon, Northern, Southern and Western - will join the country lads with the introduction of the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championship.

For the first time, metropolitan and country leagues will battle it out for the ultimate bragging rights to be crowned the best community football league in Victoria.

A total of 38 leagues will compete in a one off head-to-head match, which will be held on the weekend of May 21-22 at 19 venues across Victoria, with a further six leagues competing in their own matches across the same weekend.

In the initial year of the Championships, leagues have been fixtured against each other in a manner which will assist in the official ranking of leagues for 2017 and beyond.

The Southern Football League (SFL) will now host the Ellinbank and District Football League (EDFL), whereas under the AFL Victoria Country Championship the EDFL was set to host Horsham.

“I’ve got no qualms about it,” he said.

“It’ll present a real challenge.”

He said some of the sides in Division 1 of the SFL - which includes the likes of Clayton, Chelsea Heights, and East Brighton - were “quite strong”.

“They’ve got three divisions to draw on, so they’ll have a strong lineup and they’ll take a power of beating,” he said.

Moore said EDFL players with ties to the SFL could enjoy the prospect of playing against them.

There were a number of players familiar with many Gazette readers playing in Division 1 in 2015, such as the

Scanlon boys - Nick, Dean and Stewart - and Chris Lee who all lined up for Clayton. Former Collingwood premiership star Shane Morwood, meanwhile, coached Dingley to the Division 1 premiership over Mordialloc.

Moore said there was the potential for the EDFL’s bylaws to be amended to entice more clubs’ players to put their hands up for interleague duty.

“If selected players don’t want to play then that’s fair enough but just tell us early,” he said.

Moore also said, at this stage, the EDFL was expecting Aussie Jones to continue in his role as interleague coach.

Helpful advice for draft pick hopefuls

By JARROD POTTER “IF YOU miss out on the national draft it’s not the end of the world - the rookie draft is seeing more and more players getting elevated and playing AFL football.”

This piece of humble advice comes from Melbourne AFL footballer James Harmes, who knows better than most how it feels to be overlooked on draft night.

Embodying his own advice, Harmes was given at pick two in the December 2014 rookie draft and after two seasons pushing himself through the VFL and into an AFL debut, Harmes, 20, from Devon Meadows, has now earned his place on the Melbourne senior list.

He wanted all the prospective footballers hoping to hear their name called on Tuesday night to keep working even if the setbacks came, as you never knew where a small chance could take you.

“The advice from me for the young kids out there is to keep working hard and never giving up on your dreams,” Harmes said.

“The main message is to work hard, ask for advice, take everything in and be the best you can.”

Getting an early Christmas present from the club, Harmes was thrilled to gain the elevation after a standout second AFL season.

“It was really exciting news when I found out that I was going to be elevated,” Harmes said.

“It was only probably two weeks ago that (Melbourne player and personnel manager) Todd Viney called me and told me the good news and it was a little bit of a dream come true, that I’d be on the main list of an AFL club.

He had an inkling he could gain promotion for his third AFL season after stringing together eight AFL matches throughout the last nine rounds of the season.

Getting to sing the song - the one he memorised from a young age as a passionate Demons fan in round 16 stands out to the upand-coming midfielder, but he also loved his best performance

of the year against Greater Western Sydney as he booted two goals and stamping his name on the match.

“Took a while to get used to the speed and different physicality out there, but in the last round I played my style of footy and did whatever I wanted,” Harmes said.

“I think after my last game I proved myself, that was probably my best games at AFL level and proved to the coaches I was ready to play next year and putting my hand up to be a good AFL footballer.”

But the successes of 2015 are behind him now as he focuses on his third pre-season with hopes of featuring in round one for the Demons.

“Been back for just over a week now - the first week was pretty tough but I’m getting used to it,” Harmes said.

“It’s a bit fun at the moment, but after Christmas is when the hard stuff begins.

“This being my third AFL pre-season, I know what to expect and what to do to play round one.”

SOUTH Gippsland’s next generation of soccer stars will have a local club to call home after the formation of Lang Lang United.

After playing at Korumburra City last year, Lang Lang resident Grant Spence thought there was a missed sporting opportunity in the area.

Rather than driving to Pakenham or Drouin to play a soccer match, Spence thought it would be amazing to give locals a chance to play in their own backyard.

With the help of some friends, the Eagles were formed this year with the hopes of putting sides into the Gippsland Soccer League in 2016.

“I’ve only just moved to the South Gippsland region and I’ve always been involved in soccer my whole life, but there was a pretty big gap from Pakenham all the way up to Korumburra,” Spence said.

“There’s a massive gap in Nyora, Kooweerup, Lang Lang and there wasn’t really a soccer team that was catering for the kids of all those schools.

“Obviously there was football and cricket, but with soccer being the biggest growing sport in Australia, there would definitely be a market for it here and something needed just to promote the sport.”

Setting their standards high in the first season, Lang Lang United wants to put senior men and women’s teams as well as under-16, under-15 girls, 14, 12 and Miniroos sides in the club’s inaugural ranks.

“It’s more of a family, local social competition - I guess the main reason is that there’s an FFV choice in Pakenham, but a lot of these clubs have a lot of travel to do.

“The GSL has a little less travel and is a better standard for people starting as well.”

The club will temporarily play at Wonthaggi for this season but hopes the Lang Lang Showgrounds could become the Eagles’ home in 2016 and beyond.

A wide and varied collection of junior local cricketers are bringing their batting and bowling prowess to the next level.

Players from throughout the Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) have been chosen for higher duties in the Southern Pioneers regional representative teams.

Dandenong Premier cricketers Mick Sweeney (under-18) and Cameron Forsyth (under-16) will coach the up-andcomers throughout the rest of the year, leading up to the January tournament.

Coaching alongside Sweeney is Prabath Nissanka (Casey-South Melbourne) while Forsyth will be aided

by Dane Harkin (Casey-South Melbourne), Kierran Voelkl (Casey-South Melbourne) and assisted by Josh Slater (Dandenong).

The under-14 team will be coached by Rob Elston (CaseySouth Melbourne), Mitch Rowe (Dandenong) and Kevin Tissera (Dandenong).

Captains lead by example

By DAVID NAGEL THEY lead their clubs into battle with team success a priority - but three of West Gippsland cricket’s finest captains stole the individual spotlight in the Premier Division on Saturday.

Tooradin’s Tom Hussey (177), Pakenham’s Dom Paynter (172) and Upper Beaconsfield skipper Scott Pitcher (7/56) took control of their side’s destiny with brilliant displays of batsmanship and leg-spin bowling on the weekend.

Hussey’s highest score - of what has been a stunning WGCA career - propelled the Seagulls (5/275dec) into an impregnable position against association cellar-dwellers Cranbourne Meadows (3/60).

Quick runs were the order of the day for the Seagulls, who are looking to inflict the Rebels third consecutive outright defeat.

And Hussey delivered in his own inimitable fashion, smashing 14 fours and three mighty sixes with Michael Ralph (49) and former skipper Aaron Avery (20) enjoying the best seats in the house.

“It was a very selfless knock - he always puts the team first,” Avery said of his great mate's epic innings.

Josh Lownds (2/16) and Matt Welsh (1/8) made some critical late breakthroughs for the Seagulls after Will Cloney (26) and Wayne Diss (16) had the Rebels off to a solid start.

vided the intestinal fortitude for Pakenham (7/339cc) to once again recover from a dodgy start, this time against Merinda Park at Donnelly Reserve.

For the fourth time this season the undefeated Lions recovered from a precarious position, with 4/44, 7/57 and 3/39 in previous rounds the precursor to Saturday’s 4/44 score line.

But Paynter and the in-form Rob Elston (91) resurrected the Lions’ innings, the pair blazing a glorious 269run trail for the fifth wicket.

Paynter’s dominance was exemplified by his 12 fours and six maximums - and the fact that he raced from his century to 150 in just 16 minutes at the crease!

“I’ve played footy with him for a long time and always followed his cricket career, and it was just a privilege to be out there with him,” Paynter said of his partnership with Elston.

Jason Toan (3/44) was the sole destroyer for the Cobras.

Upper Beaconsfield has a stack of work to do to make Pitcher’s efforts worthwhile after Kooweerup (259) compiled a more-than-useful score at Denham’s Road.

By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 7 (Day 2) WHATEVER Dandenong ate at lunch should be banned from the rooms after a disastrous collapse after the break.

Chasing Carlton’s (339 and 1/20) mammoth first-innings tally, the Dandenong approach was well measured and cautious through the first hour.

Skipper Tom Donnell (90no) and Brett Forsyth (43) saw the shine off the new ball.

The pair’s caution paid off initially as they raced to their second 100-run stand this season.

There was extra celebration awaiting Donnell, who surpassed Tim Hooper as the club’s greatest run-scorer in his solo hand.

A big win for Hampton Park HAMPTON PARK BOWLS HAMPTON Park’s midweek pennant bowlers were back in action where they left off two weeks ago. On Tuesday, Division 1 played their nearest neighbours Narre Warren at Pound Road and had a good 13 shot win. Val Moore, Ann Westwell, Ian Bartlett and Chris Hendrie were down by 4 shots after 13 ends, but went on a scoring spree, winning seven of the last eight ends and a 14-2 shot turnaround in their 26-16 win, while Geoff Ladner, Ron Beverly, Neville Hendrie and Denise Eastick also won (2219). Marion Battaglia, Andrew Brandolin, Toni Sutton and Helen Lambert just missed the win with a 20-20 draw.

Old rivals in a nail-biter CRANBOURNE BOWLS CRANBOURNE’S thrilling one-shot victory over crosscity rival Berwick, the Ladies’ 24-shot win over Mulgrave Country Club, and some great improvement from the Division 3 side - they were the highlights from the Cranbourne Bowls Club this week.

Cranbourne legend Ray Boskell summed things up after Saturday’s big win over Berwick.

“It’s great to play bowls at home on a beautiful sunny day but it is so much better to also defeat our old rivals Berwick.”

Scores were all tied up on the last end, which each bowl delivered changing the result until the final delivery gave Cranbourne 2 a one-shot win.

An excellent performance came from the rink of Vic Buttera, Lyn Whalley and Andy Kidd who gave an armchair ride to their skip Garry Hunt to win by 12 shots.

Meanwhile Barbara Fulton, Brenda De Lisle, Pat Boltong and Maree Taylor stole the show for the ladies against Mul-

grave Country Club, securing a 19-shot win that grew to 24 by day’s end.

Two rinks up and two rinks down was a much better performance from the Cranbourne 3 side that went down by just 15 shots to a strong Caulfield Park.

The Cranbourne 1 side also shared the rinks, but lost by 20 shots to Clayton.

The star rink of the day was that of John Mulder, Steve Bentley, Paul O’Day and Joe Byrne who scored an impressive 16-shot win.

The club’s Men’s Pairs Championship was played on Sunday with John Stanley and Peter De Lisle scoring a oneshot victory over Fritz Helle and Garry Hunt.

Fritz Helle and Steve Bentley will match motors in the Club Singles Championship in two weeks’ time.
