Team says let’s do lunch

By ERIN SOMERVILLE THE simple act of having a meal is proving successful in bringing different sectors of the Lavington community together each week.

A weekly luncheon program being run by AlburyCity’s Mirambeena Community Centre, Job Centre, and Wodonga Food Share is allowing the long-term unemployed, and those with disabilities, to engage in a work environment and develop new skills, while providing a cheap lunch for the community.

What started off as an affordable lunch for around 20 people in September has quickly skyrocketed in popularity, with often up to 100 community members of all ages and demographics stopping by to enjoy the $5 nutritious two-course meal in a relaxed community environment.

The program is operated and supported under the “work for the dole” initiative, with the use of two semipermanent volunteers helping the unemployed develop new skills such as food preparation, basic food handling skills, basic OHS awareness, communication skills, problem solving skills, with a sense of teamwork, confidence, and achievement while catering under pressure for a large crowd.

Pauline Blake and Phil Duncan are two volunteers who spend 15 hours a week participating in the program, and have found it has given them more motivation in their hunt for employment.

“It gives us more confidence, and gives us something to do,” Mr Duncan said.

Ms Blake said she is seeing the skills quickly develop in participants such as herself.

“It teaches people to work together in a team,” she said.

The food is donated to the cause

by Food Share each week, but funds raised at the lunches also go towards new equipment and buying produce that isn’t always readily available.

Mirambeena volunteer co-ordinator Sharon Pellas said it was encouraging

watching the initiative grow and being embraced by the entire community.

“We get a lot of school aged kids in talking with the older guests,” she said.

The positive energy the initiative has created is evident in its participants, Albury JobCentre Transition to Work co-ordinator Andrea Matassoni said.

The organisation brings a group of nine participants, who each have disabilities, to participate in bringing the lunch together.

From setting the tables, serving, and greeting guests, they develop an array of practical and social skills.

“Initiatives like these are really im-

portant,” Ms Matassoni said.

“Just the program alone helps so many people.”

The Mirambeena Community Lunch is on every Wednesday, from noon, until 9 March next year at The Mirambeena Community Centre, 19 Martha Mews, Lavington.

Make a difference in a child’s life

By ERIN SOMERVILLE FOR mothers like Wodonga’s Shirley McKernan, an extra pair of helping hands can go a long way.

Ms McKernan is a single mother of three daughters, and while that’s enough to keep any parent on their toes, her middle child Matilda Maxfield has been living with a mysterious, life-threatening condition for the entire nine years of her life.

The mysterious illness has left Matilda with a low heart rate, inability to speak, low immune system, hypertonia, seizures, and breathing difficulties that often sees her stop breathing up to 110 times a night.

Machines continuously alert Ms McKernan throughout the night when Matilda’s lack of breathing becomes significant.

This usually means Ms McKernan is up attending to her daughter three to four times on a good night.

Doctors believe her condition could be a very rare chromosomal one known as 5Q31.2, but her symptoms fail to align with others who have been diagnosed with the same.

For now, the family takes each day as it comes. “Through the pregnancy there was no reals sign of anything wrong,� Ms McKernan said. “She had a little hole in her heart, and was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital where she stayed for five to six months. “They did every test every test you could think of and there is still no diagnosis.�

The condition has changed Ms McKernan’s life as she once knew it.

She has changed her career to take up work with Belvoir School so she can be close to Matilda, and very rarely has a moment to herself as she is unable to leave Matilda alone.

Even going to the bathroom and taking a shower is a simple task that has become very complex for Ms Mckernan.

She uses this time to taker her eight-year-old daughter Adelaide swimming and to ballet lessons, or catch up on simple chores such as grocery shopping that can be impossible when caring for Matilda.

The organisation Very Special Kids is now currently looking for volunteers in the Albury/ Wodonga region to help support families caring for children with life-threatening illnesses.

Matilda and her family have been involved with Very Special Kids since 2008 and access free-of-charge respite care at Very Special Kids Hospice, emotional support from a family support worker, and participate in camps, coffee mornings and activity days with other families in similar situations.

But there are no Very Special Kids trained family services volunteers - which help families with the practical and emotional demands of caring for a child with a life-threatening illness - available in the area.

Matilda has been on the waiting list for a volunteer since 2012.

On Tuesday 1 December,

Very Special Kids is holding a volunteer information session at the Albury-Wodonga Volunteer Resource Bureau from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, for those who are interested in becoming a volunteer.

Matilda’s family is just one of the 46 families in the Hume region who would benefit from having a Very Special Kids Family Services Volunteer.

Every volunteer completes a 27-hour training program to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to support families who have a child with a life-threatening condition.

The training includes topics such as communication and listening skills, loss and grief and ways of working with children.

Ms McKernan said an extra pair of hands for a short time a week makes a huge difference to families like hers. “The help of volunteers is greatly appreciated, and would help a number of families in the region. “They would be helping with everyday things we take for granted like having a shower and allowing me to spend time reading with Adelaide. “They are going to have some great times with these kids and the family as well.�

sentatives to ensure substantial action on mitigating climate change and to restrict global warming to less than two degrees.

It also outlines a push for Australia to show leadership in the move to a lower carbon world.

The petition, which was pre-

sented to Ms McGowan on Friday, comes in the lead up to the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris next week.

A march to push for further commitment by Australia to lead in the fight against climate change will be held in Melbourne on 27 November to coincide with the conference.

ALBURY police are embracing the concept of the male-led White Ribbon Day campaign, with many local officers dealing with the scourge of domestic violence in their daily duties.

Albury Local Area Command’s two Domestic Violence Liaison Officers see around 150 cases of local domestic violence each month.

These figures can rapidly fluctuate throughout the year, and with silly season soon here, police expect domestic violence cases to soon increase. “It changes over the seasons,� Albury LAC Domestic Violence Liaison Officer Alicia Langman said. “Over summer and Christmas you get a lot more. “There’s more alcohol, a lot of financial stress can come to a head, and more family gatherings.�

Police also expect to receive more reports following White Ribbon Day as awareness continues to be raised.

Each case the police deal with is different, and victims and perpetrators come from a broad spectrum of socio-economic, age, and cultural backgrounds.

They also regularly deal with reoffenders.

Senior Constable Langman said there had been a positive shift in better understanding domestic violence and implementing effective methods to more effectively tackle the issue. “Police are seeing it being taken on more as a community problem, and it’s not so much behind closed doors anymore,� she said. “One of the biggest steps has been the DVEC (Domestic Violence Evidence in Chief), which allows victims to give a statement via video. “It’s a quicker and easier

process for victims instead of having to go through the harrowing process of recounting their statement.�

But while positive steps have been made, there is still a long way to go to eliminate domestic violence as reported case numbers continue to slowly increase on the Border. “I don’t think there is any more domestic violence cases than there has been, but it’s being reported more,� Albury LAC Domestic Violence Liaison Officer Joanne Gallant said. “The numbers are almost irrelevant; in my opinion any domestic violence incident is too many.�

said it was important to take a holistic approach and treat the trauma that often leads to homelessness situations, such as fleeing domestic violence or family breakdown.

“It can make it difficult to move forward.”

Dealing with the traumatic issues that domestic violence brings is just a small fraction of the large role that Betty’s Place takes on.

“When people think about escaping domestic violence, it’s not just about going with only the clothes on their back,” Betty’s Place Program Manager Cassie Sandow said.

“They might not have a vehicle

or a phone.

“They are no longer connected.”

And despite the trauma both women and their children often suffer from domestic violence, the team praises the brave efforts each client takes to leave their home and make a positive change in their life, and in their children’s.

“Women we work with are very courageous and experts in protecting their children”, Mr Park said.

“We can come in with great intervention and resources but it is the women’s strength and courage that gets them through.”

A NEW Welcome Centre is part of a major redevelopment officially opened at the Bonegilla Migrant Experience on Wednesday.

Victorian Senator Bridget McKenzie joined Wodonga mayor Anna Speedie in opening the $760,000 project which also includes landscaping, signage, restoration of the Recreation Hut and two public artworks.

Cr Speedie said the redevelopment has made the Bonegilla Migrant Experience more visitorfriendly and will help preserve an important part of Australian history for future generations.

“The Bonegilla Migrant Experience is a significant tourist attraction for the region and last financial year, welcomed 17,500 visitors,” she said.

“The site has links with people in every state and territory in Australia.

“Our visitors today reflect that deep and personal connection, however we are increasingly seeing more and more visitors to the site who simply want to learn about modern Australia’s heritage and history.”

More than 300,000 migrants passed through the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre between 1947 and 1971.

New exhibition materials have been installed in the Recreation Hut and throughout the Bonegilla Migrant Experience to better tell the stories of those individuals and families who stayed at the site.

The redevelopment was jointly funded by Regional Development Victoria’s Putting Locals First Program ($455,000), the Australian Government’s Department of the Environment ($175,000) and Wodonga Council ($73,500).

The opening was attended by Netherlands Ambassador Annemieke Ruigrok and Hungarian Consul Peter Bakonyi, as well as former residents of the site and their families.

The openng also coincided with the launch of the revamped Bonegilla Migrant Experience website, found at bonegilla.org.au, and a new Facebook page.

The emotional support service allows women more than just a refuge but also a place to unpack their story and begin healing with their young family.

Ms Ballard said the impact of domestic violence on young children is often evident.

“Children can become hypervigilant,” she said.

“They can have delayed development, and it can affect their education.”

Very young children whose sleep is disrupted by slamming doors, smashing and the sound of shouting and fighting show signs of the startle response, which is a defensive response to sudden or threatening stimuli.

Often children who face the frequent ‘fight or flight’ response that floods their bodies while their brains are still developing show signs of the trauma, including hypervigilance and post-traumatic stress.

The service at Betty’s Place understands that domestic violence is more than just physical abuse and helps mothers to reconnect with their children, offer information on support services, and even helps reintroduce play, which helps children process and understand the world around them.

“Parents have such a massive role in children’s life,” Ms Ballard said.

Funds grant to fight

By ERIN SOMERVILLE A LOCAL forum to combat domestic violence has been given the green light to run again next year.

The Local Domestic and Family Violence Committee has been successful in obtaining a $1000 state grant to fund ‘Domestic and Family Violence It Stops on the Border’.

The forum was held for the first time in April, 2015, and proved to be a major success by bringing service providers, public, and guest speakers together to workshop and look towards ways of eliminating the problem.

Its success was a result of the teamwork between the committee and TAFE Albury, which provided free public space for the forum, and utilised its Diploma of Community Services students to help organise and run the event.

Topics such as family dispute mediation, safety planning, and connecting with the right services were included in the forum.

TAFE Albury Community Services teacher Di Sutherland said she was hoping the forum would become an annual event after this year’s success.

“The feedback was absolutely awesome,” she said.

“It demonstrates what we can do on a small amount of money.

“The reach and impact the forum had was immeasurable and it raised awareness of domestic violence.”

Member for Albury Greg Aplin was pleased to see the funds being put to good use locally.

The Local Domestic and Family

Violence Committee Grants are part of the NSW Government’s continued support for the prevention of domestic

and family violence at a local level by providing annual funding of $80,000 to local organisations across NSW.

Raising concerns on local crimes ALBURYCITY is asking residents to have their say on crime, in particular what criminal activity they are most concerned about.

The council is developing a new Crime Prevention Plan 2015/18 and we want the community to be part of its development.

The plan will outline how the council will continue to assist and work with police, the community and other tiers of government to address crime and safety concerns as well as enhance the sense of safety and wellbeing in the city.

The survey is available on AlburyCity’s website and in it residents are asked how significant they think these crimes are and if the crime has affected their family in the past 12 months.

The survey is anonymous.

Domestic violence and drug offences have been highlighted by the council and the NSW Department of the Attorney General and Justice as focus areas.

According to the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, there were 296 reported cases of domestic violence in Albury in the 2014/15 financial year.

AlburyCity mayor Henk van de Ven said: “Albury is a safe place to live and it’s important we all work together to keep it that way. We really want to know what the community thinks and how it feels about safety, so please visit our website and have a say on our Crime Prevention Plan.”

Feet down for family feature

By ERIN SOMERVILLE ALBURY police and the local community will be saying no to domestic violence with their feet.

On Wednesday 25 November the annual White Ribbon Walk will take its first steps towards conquering family violence on both sides of the Border.

The Albury police and community will don white shirts and meet at Noreuil Park at 10.15am and make their way to the PORTA sculpture on

Lincoln Causeway. They will meet with Victoria police and the Wodonga community who will be departing from St Ive’s Hotel, as part of a cross-border stance against domestic violence.

The walk will coincide with other marches across Australia to support the White Ribbon campaign.

Police will join local communities across the country to take an oath to help end violence against women at White Ribbon Day events.

NSW Police Force officers will make a pledge against domestic and family violence and show solidarity to an international cause to end violence against women for White Ribbon Day. White Ribbon Day also marks the start of 16 Days of Activism - an international campaign calling for an end to violence against women, concluding on International Human Rights Day on Thursday 10 December.

By ERIN SOMERVILLE WITH just a week to go, those heading to the Wodonga Gold Cup are already being reminded that they have a lot to lose if they get behind the wheel drunk.

The Transport Accident Commission has revamped its message to drink-drivers with new campaigns that no longer tell offenders they are 'bloody idiots’, instead reminding them they have 'a lot to lose’ if they drive over the limit.

TAC road safety manager Samantha Cockfield said reaching out to regional Victorians such as those in Wodonga was important, as more risks tended to be taken on roads outside of metropolitan areas.

“Everyone heading to the Wodonga Cup next Friday should be in for a great day of racing, which can often involve having a few drinks as well,” Ms Cockfield said.

“What we don’t want race-goers to forget is that having a plan to get home safely is more important than any race at the track.

“One in four deaths on Victorian roads involves someone driving with a bloodalcohol level of more than .05 - the con-

sequences of drink-driving can be the loss of someone’s father, mother, brother or sister.”

Buses will be running to the Cup meet from the following locations: QE2 Dean Street, Albury, 11am, 12pm; Biralee 11.15am, 12.15pm; Water Tower Hovell Street, 11.25am, 12.25pm; Quest Apartments 11.30am, 12.30pm; Stump Hotel 11.35am, 12.25pm.

Return trips will leave the course at 6pm and 6.30pm, dropping in Wodonga and Albury.

“If you are planning on drinking at the races, your plan should be not to drive and buses are a great way of taking that out of the equation,” Ms Cockfield said.

Victoria Police will be placing booze buses in targeted areas throughout the country racing season in an effort to stop any unsafe drivers taking to the road.

At the racecourse, TAC breath-testing teams will be set up at exit points to help race-goers avoid drink-driving by providing free breath tests, tea, coffee and water.

As many as 20,000 of these breath tests will be conducted across 60 country racing meets this season.

Diabetics’ healthy future

By ERIN SOMERVILLE PEOPLE living with diabetes on the Border can look to a healthier future with the introduction of state-of-the-art testing equipment this year.

The equipment includes two HbA1c machines, which diabetes educators can use to test a finger prick of blood giving a three-month average of a patient’s blood glucose level.

The test takes five minutes and provides a most useful tool for determining how satisfactory a patient’s control has been over those three months and for making adjustments to treatment at the same consultation.

A similar test is available at a pathology laboratory but only using a more substantial venous sample with results not available that day.

This means patients must make another appointment with their health practitioner

Management of this equipment will be through Albury Wodonga Health’s diabetes educators.

Albury Wodonga Diabetes Support Group acting president Doug Stewart said the introduction of this stateof-the-art equipment was exciting news for those in our community with diabetes.

“The HbA1c machine provides a hugely useful result from a simple finger prick,” he said. “ It will greatly help many in our community to better manage their diabetes.”

Mr Stewart said although Continuous Blood Glucose Monitors were available on the market they were too expensive for most people with diabetes.

“Our ultimate hope is to have a diabetes clinic in our region where all facets of diabetes care can be attended to at the one visit.”

The new machines are now in use at Albury Paediatric Group clinics for children with diabetes and through Albury Wodonga Health’s Community Health Centres in Albury and Wodonga.

They have been purchased using two ClubsNSW grants awarded by the Commercial Club Albury to the Albury Wodonga Diabetes Support Group.

The support group has also been successful in achieving another ClubsNSW grant this year from the Commercial Club Albury to purchase two Continuous Blood Glucose Monitors.

The monitors will provide invaluable assistance for diabetes educators by revealing when blood glucose levels go dangerously high or low for people using insulin and enabling more precise adjustments to insulin doses.

A CHARLES Sturt University (CSU) expert is calling for men to step up in the campaign to prevent violence against women this White Ribbon Day, Wednesday 25 November.

Dr Andreia Schineanu from CSU’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences believes male role models are the key to shifting community attitudes, and it starts at a local level and in the home.

“The White Ribbon campaign was initiated by men and it remains Australia’s only national, male-led campaign to end violence against women,” Dr Schineanu said.

“Most domestic violence is perpetrated by men, so it is up to men to end it. Violence starts in the home and it must end in the home too - men must lead by example and treat their partner, mother, sisters and daughters with respect.”

Dr Schineanu believes local voices can be just as effective in changing community attitudes as celebrities.

“White Ribbon Day has some wonderful celebrity ambassadors but men in normal towns, living everyday lives can help change community beliefs towards violence,” Dr Schineanu said.

“Speaking up against violence in your own community can have a powerful effect to change the attitudes and social norms that support and perpetuate abuse, and can be more powerful than

celebrity endorsement.”

Dr Schineanu is encouraging men to reflect on their own behaviours and attitudes and whether these perpetuate and support sexism and violence. She suggests some actions that individual men can take include confronting sexist jokes and comments, and refusing to buy or watch material that portrays women in a sexually degrading or violent manner.

According to Dr Schineanu, violence against women is more prevalent than people realise.

“Often we only hear about domestic violence in the news and often it is the most severe cases, such as homicide, so we can feel

distanced from it,“ Dr Schineanu said.

“We think that it is something that will never happen to us and only happens to other people but one in three Australian women have experienced some form of violence since the age of 15.

“Men need to understand how inequality between men and women still exists and how this impacts on women and children, they need to be empowered to talk about how prevalent domestic violence is and why it is not OK. Men of all ages should be applauded for supporting White Ribbon Day - they are the voices who will change community values and lead a new generation of men committed to ending this epidemic.”

Dr Schineanu is currently working with a Riverina-based Women’s Health Centre on a research project that will assess the characteristics of and community attitudes to domestic violence in regional Australian cities, and develop interventions to address them.

“The data we have at the moment comes from BOCSAR and is based on reported cases only,” Dr Schineanu said.

“Most cases of domestic violence go unreported, so in order to ensure we have the correct support services where they are needed, we must first get a more accurate understanding of the issue in (the Riverina).”

Legislation to match NSW wagering tax rates with Victoria passed NSW Parliament last week, delivering $235 million extra to the industry over five years and an extra $90 million for each year after that.

THE Albury Racing Club will receive a major boost in prize money thanks to the NSW Government’s legislation to match NSW’s wagering tax rates with Victoria’s.

Every TAB race at the Albury Racing Club will have the minimum prize money offered per race increased by $5,000 to $20,000 from July 2016.

Journey to a proper home

By ERIN SOMERVILLE WHAT will it take to end homelessness?

That’s the question that will be put to the test on Wednesday as YES Youth and Family Services prepares to kick off its half-day conference The Journey Home - Creating Change Together.

The conference will see a range of specialists and guest speakers come together in the lead up to the YES AGM at La Trobe University to discuss the Border’s homelessness problem, underlying issues, and work towards a solution.

It has been almost 12 months since YES became a leading service in the Going Home Staying Home reform,

which works in partnership with St Vincent de Paul, VERTO Tenants Advice Service, Homes Out West, and Woomera Aboriginal Corporation to tackle homelessness.

The recent changes have seen the individualised services become part of a single system, with The Hub in Albury serving as the initial contact point.

The overhauled service now has a heavier focus on being more pro-active and preventing homeless before it reaches crisis point.

YES Client Service Manager Jon Park said while a better understanding of homeless has developed in the past decade and much of the stigma has

been removed, much work still needs to be done as the rate of homelessness continues to grow in the region.

“It’s a very complex problem tied in with so many things,” he said.

“Homelessness is not just our problem as a service or the homeless people’s - it’s a community problem. “(The conference) is more about shaping some of the dialogue about homelessness and what it takes to end homelessness.

“We believe it is end-able.”

For most people on the Border, homeless is not being houseless.

Many are young people under 25 are couchsurfing, staying in boarding houses and hostels, or living with

friends and relatives.

They may have a bed and be off the streets but are not connected and don’t have a place to call home. They are often known as the ‘hidden homeless’.

Often, it is small events that can trigger a state of homelessness.

It may be losing a job and getting behind on rent, not receiving adequate support for mental health issues, escaping family violence, or facing family breakdown.

In Australia, 44,083 people under the age of 26 are homeless at any given time.

Like the national trend, many homeless people on the Border are also young.

Mr Park said there was also a huge

issue with a lack of affordable and accessible housing.

He said it was encouraging to see some local real estate agents, who The Hub has built ties with, giving people in need a go.

As the push to prevent homelessness continues, Mr Park said the conference would be an opportunity for services to continue building on their work locally.

“For us, it’s about consolidating the changes.

“It’s about working as a system and not individual programs.”

Dolls deliver for furry friends

By ERIN SOMERVILLE WHAT do teddy bears, dogs, and dolls all have in common?

Apart from being cute and cuddly, local dogs in need of a home will benefit from funds made at this year’s Doll, Bear, and Hobby Show.

Wodonga Dog Rescue has been established for five years, and in that time its volunteers have managed to turn around the euthanasia rate of 95 per cent at the local pound, now saving 99 per cent of dogs brought in.

This is the first year the Albury Wodonga Doll, Bear, and Hobby Show has directed funds towards the furry cause, with money being used to buy food for fostered dogs, and other necessities such as coats and grooming equipment.

The show will also be directing funds to the Wendy Beard Walk for cystic fibrosis, which raises money locally to help those suffering with the illness.

The show is this year celebrating its 29th year of displaying some of the region’s best craftwork. Last year, over 100 dolls and bears were entered into the competition for judging.

This year, judges from Melbourne will be heading to the Border to pick the winners.

Albury Wodonga Doll, Bear, and Hobby Show president Margaret Grigsby said there were a number of challenges in making an award-winning bear or doll.

“You have to like to if it’s going to sit in your house,” she said.

“It has to be made of good quality material, and done to the best of your ability.”

Ms Grigsby has been creating dolls for 25 years, and finds porcelain can be very tricky.

“The hardest thing with porcelain is the painting,” she said.

“As you get older, that gets harder.”

The Albury Wodonga Doll, Bear, and Hobby Show is on at the Mirambeena Community Centre, Martha Mews, North Albury.

It runs on Saturday 18 November, from 10am until 4pm, and Sunday 29 November, from 10am to 3pm.

Admission for adults is $5, and children cost $2. Children under three years old can enter free.

The White Ribbon vision

By WHITE RIBBON FOUNDATION WHAT is White Ribbon?

White Ribbon is Australia’s only national, male-led campaign to end men’s violence against women.

Vision: All women live in safety, free from all forms of men’s violence.

Mission: Making women’s safety a man’s issue, too.

The campaign works through primary prevention initiatives involving awareness raising and education, and programs with youth, schools, workplaces and across the broader community.

Globally, White Ribbon is the world’s largest male-led movement to end men’s violence against women.

Originating in Canada in 1991, White Ribbon is now active in more than 60 countries.

White Ribbon began in Australia in 2003 as part of UNIFEM (now UN Women), formally becoming a foundation in 2007.

White Ribbon Australia observes the International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women, also known as White Ribbon Day, annually on 25 November. White Ribbon Day signals the start of the 16 Days of Activism to Stop Violence against Women, which ends on Human Rights Day (8 December).

However, the campaign runs all year and is evident across the community through, for example, advertising and marketing campaigns such as Uncover Secrets, social media, community events and White Ribbon Night in July.

Domestic violence is a widespread though often a hidden problem across Australia. It occurs in all parts of society, regardless of geographic location, socio-economic status, age, cultural and ethnic background, or religious belief, and its often devastating effectspsychological, social and economic, short-term and long-term- rebound on families, children, and the community as a whole.

What is domestic violence?

The term ‘domestic violence’ refers to interpersonal violence which takes place in domestic settings, family relationships, and intimate relationships, and is most commonly applied to violence by a man to his wife, female sexual partner or ex-partner. However, ‘domestic violence’ is used also to refer to violence between same sex sexual partners, among family members (including siblings and parent-child violence either way), and by women against male partners. Three other terms commonly applied to some or all of these forms of violence are family violence, men’s violence against women, and intimate violence, while newer terms include relationship violence, intimate partner violence, and gender-based violence.

Domestic violence (sometimes called ‘family violence’) can take many different forms including intimidation, coercion or isolation, emotional, physical, sexual, financial and spiritual abuse.

Australian police and court crime data indicate that women constitute a significant proportion of reported victims of intimate partner violence, while men make up a significant proportion of reported abusers. These data tend to focus on physical and sexual violence. Australian population survey data similarly show that women were more likely than men to be victims of physical, sexual and other forms of violence by a partner.

Domestic violence is generally understood as gendered violence, and is an abuse of power within a relationship (heterosexual or homosexual) or after separation. In the large majority of cases, the offender is male and the victim is female.

More than two decades of international research definitively shows that infants, children and adolescents experience serious negative psychological, emotional, social and developmental impacts to their well-being from the traumatic ongoing experiences of domestic violence.

Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander communities prefer the term ‘family violence’. ‘Family’ covers a diverse range of ties of mutual obligation and support, and perpetrators and victims of family violence can include, for example, aunts, uncles, cousins and children of previous relationships.

Domestic or family violence may involve a wide range of behaviours, including: Physical abuse - including direct assaults on the body, use of weapons, driving dangerously, destruction of property, abuse of pets in front of family members, assault of children, locking the victim out of the house, and sleep deprivation.

Sexual abuse - any form of forced sex or sexual degradation, such as sexual activity without consent, causing pain during sex, assaulting the genitals, coercive sex without protection against pregnancy or sexually transmitted disease, making the victim perform sexual acts unwillingly, criticising, or using sexually degrading insults.

Verbal abuse - continual ‘put downs’ and humiliation, either privately or publicly, with attacks following clear themes that focus on intelligence, sexuality, body image and capacity as a parent and spouse.

Emotional abuse - blaming the victim for all problems in the relationship, constantly comparing the victim with others to undermine self-esteem and self-worth, sporadic sulking, withdrawing all interest and engagement (eg weeks of silence).

Social abuse - systematic isolation from family and friends through techniques such as ongoing rudeness to family and friends, moving to locations where the victim knows nobody, and forbidding or physically preventing the victim from going out and meeting people, in effect, imprisonment.

Spiritual abuse - denying access to ceremonies, land or family, preventing religious observance, forcing victims to do things against their beliefs, denigration of cultural background, or using religious teachings

These statistics are both shocking and appalling and represents a culturally entrenched problem.

Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash was sworn in as Minister for Employment, Minister for Women and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Public Service on 21 September 2015.

Distressingly, so far this year 76 women have been murdered as a result of domestic violence.7KLV ÂżJXUH UHĂ&#x20AC;HFWV UHDO OLYHs and real people. Women we know and love.

Whether it occurs in the street or in the home, domestic violence is completely contrary to the values of contemporary Australia and it must stop.In order to end violence against women, we need to address its underlying causes. To change the story that ends in violence, we must begin with addressing the issues of gender equality and respect.

The Prime Minister recently made commentary that, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Disrespecting women does not always result in violence against women. But all violence against women begins with disrespecting womenâ&#x20AC;?. We need to examine and re-educate the attitudes and beliefs fuelling this epidemic. Attitudes such as the statistic that one in four young people think that it is not serious for a man to sometimes slap his girlfriend when he is drunk.

The Government acknowledges that we have a national crisis when it comes to violence against women in Australia.

This is why we have made combatting the issue a national priority.

7KH :RPHQÂśV 6DIHW\ 3DFNDJH ZKLFK , UHFHQWO\ XQYHLOHG ZLWK 3ULPH 0LQLVWHU 7XUQEXOO LQFOXGHV VSHFLÂżF SURYLVLRQV to address this root cause. This includes providing parents, teachers and students with the resources to change young peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attitudes towards violence.

Investing in teaching the next generation about respectful relationships is vital if cultural change is to be realised.

Efforts to eradicate domestic violence need to be above politics. In recent years this has been achieved, with all levels of Government committed to tackling the issue in a coordinated way. This is a clear signal that Governments across Australia are cognisant of the gravity of the problem.

However, whilst the Government has an important role to play in putting in place policies that address domestic violence, the issue extends beyond the realm of what Government can achieve alone. Each one of us has a personal responsibility to call out the behaviours that lead to domestic violence.

We have elevated the issue of violence against women and their children to the Council of Australian Governments. By the end of the year, states and territories will agree to a National Domestic Violence Order Scheme so that when a woman takes out an order against a perpetrator in one jurisdiction, she is protected from him in all jurisdictions.

As a Government we want to ensure that women are safe at home; safe on the streets; and safe online. They deserve nothing less and we must not stop until this is achieved and I am proud that the Government is displaying strong leadership. However it is only when all elements of Australian community take ownership of this issue that we will see real change occur. No sector of the community is immune from this form of violence, so we need the commitment of all $XVWUDOLDQV WR DGGUHVV LWV URRW FDXVHV LQ WKH PRQWKV DQG \HDUV DKHDG , ÂżUPO\ EHOLHYH WKURXJK DZDUHQHVV DQG D FKDQJH RI attitude we can make Australia a much safer place for women and their children.

As the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women approaches, I encourage the people of AlburyWodonga and its surrounding regions to take up the cause and make 2015 the turning point in Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s response to violence against women.

Senator Cash was the Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection and the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women from 18 September 2013 to 20 September 2015.

Senator Cash is a Liberal Senator for Western Australia. She commenced her term as a Senator on 1 July 2008.

Prior to entering Parliament, Michaelia was a senior lawyer with a national law irm Freehills in their Perth oice.

Senator Cash holds an Honours Degree in Law from the University of London.

She also holds a Bachelor of Arts (Social Science) from Curtin University in Perth, graduating with a triple major in public relations, politics and journalism. In addition, she holds a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Western Australia.

In September 2010, Senator Cash was appointed to the dual roles of the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for the Status of Women. Senator Cash was Deputy Manager of Opposition Business in the Senate from 19 September 2012 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 18 September 2013.

Senator Cash has also been actively involved in several Senate committees including as the Deputy Chairman of the Joint Statutory: Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity.

Senator Cash is married to Richard Price, a barrister. She is the daughter of former Minister in the Western Australian Government and former President of the Legislative Council, the Hon George Cash AM.

Reminder to change ways THIS White Ribbon Day I would like to take a moment to remember each of those 63 women who in Australia, between January and October this year, have tragically lost their lives in an alleged domestic violence incident.

Consider the one in six women in this country who have experienced violence at the hands of a man and also to remember those children for who home has not been, or is not, a safe or happy place to be.

We all have the right to feel safe, living without fear and each one of us has a responsibility to recognise violence against women and its impact on our community.

White Ribbon Australia has worked tirelessly over the past 12 years to engage men and boys as drivers of the cultural change that is needed to prevent family violence.

I am pleased that governments across Australia have also made addressing this issue a national priority and the national Women’s Safety Package to Stop the Violence, announced earlier this year, provides a $100m investment in our own communities, tailored to our needs and sourcing original approaches to help people in our local areas.

Our governments understand that violence against women affects individuals and communities differently and this funding supports practical local and frontline services while also helping to change community attitudes toward violence and abuse.

Work continues on trialling innovative new technologies to keep our vulnerable safe, to provide training so that staff are better able to recognise and respond to those experiencing violence, and to also better resource our police, particularly those working in rural and remote areas.

This action is vital in addressing the terrifying spike in violent incidents and recognises that much needs to be done to keep women and children safe.

So on 25 November I encourage all Australians to play their own role and join White Ribbon Australia in driving the cultural change needed to put a stop to the violence, to say that enough is enough, to work together to reduce violence against women and children and allow us all the opportunity to be safe within our own homes.

Hey mate, here’s what you can do to help

By WHITE RIBBON FOUNDATION If you witness a violent act, you can: - Call the police - Be a witness. Stand far enough away to be safe but close enough for the violent person to see you and be aware that they are being watched.

- Get others’ support. Ask others who are nearby to help.

- Verbally intervene. Tell the violent person clearly that their actions are not OK, they are a crime, and you are calling the police. Ask the victim if they need help.

‘Are you OK” Do you need a taxi?” Say something to the man: “Hey, what are you doing?” “That’s not on, mate.”

- Stick around to make sure the situation has cooled down.

- Create a distraction so the abused person has time to get away or the perpetrator slows down or ceases their violence.

For example, ask for directions or the time.

If you are aware of violence, you can: - Talk to a friend who is verbally or physically abusive to his partner in a private, calm moment, rather than in public or directly after an abusive incident. Tell him that what you witnesses was not OK and he needs to get some help.

- Walk to a group of the perpetrator’s friends and, together, decide on a course of action.

- If you have witnessed a friend or colleague abusing a partner, talk to a group of the victim’s friends and strategies a group response.

- Talk to the woman at some point and let her know you saw what was going on and you’re willing to help her.

To show you are against violence, you can: - Make your concern known. Refrain from laughing when you are expected to. ‘I think those words are really hurtful”.

- Personalise the violence or injustice.

Bring it home. “What if that was your sister?”

- Remind him that she has feelings and rights. “Just like your mum or sister, she has the right to be treated with respect.”

- Ask for an explanation.” What are you doing?”

- Remind him of his ‘best self’. “Come on mate, you’re better than that.”

- Use your friendship. “Hey mate, I’ve got to tell you as a mate that getting a girl drunk to have sex with her isn’t cool and could land you in lots of trouble.”

- Invite group pressure. “Does anyone else feel uncomfortable about this, too?”

In a situation where your friends are engaged in harassing or abusive behaviour, you can do the following: - Distract your friends by saying something like ‘chill out, guys’.

- Try to convince your peers to stop - Walk away, signalling your rejection to their harassing behaviour.

Don’t endanger your own safety.

Call triple zero in an emergency.

What can men do?

‘Daisy’ app catches on MORE women experiencing the impacts of sexual assault, domestic, and family violence- including those in rural and remote areas of Australia, or where English is not their first language- can now find help in the one place through the updated ‘Daisy’ app.

With new features increasing accessibility, ‘Daisy’ is now connecting more women to vital information and services.

‘Daisy’- developed with input from all state and territory governments and funded by the Australian Government- has been downloaded around 100 times each week since its launch in March.

The updated app features new features including translated information across 28 language groups, text-to-voice functionality for women with vision impairment (or low literacy), and an SMS function for women living in rural or remote areas.

Special features of ‘Daisy’ include a ‘Get Help’ function that allows users to quickly call triple-zero and a ‘Quick Exit’ button to leave screens containing service information.

In June, ‘Daisy’ won a 2015 Australian Information Industry Association Victorian iAward for government innovation.

‘Daisy’ is free to download from Google Play or Android phones and the App Store for iPhones.

THE following is a list of practical things men can do to help end violence against women.

1. Listen to women ... learn from women.

The path starts with listening. Who knows better about violence against women than women who experience it? Learn about violence by asking a woman who trusts you how violence has affected her life. Then, if she feels comfortable to talk, sit back and listen.

2. Learn about the problem. The basic rights that most men enjoy- safety in their homes, ability to go out at night, a job free of harassment- are a course of fear for women in much of the world.

The fear is greatest in women’s own homes. A common myth is that most violence is committed by strangers. In fact, women are most at risk from men they know, husbands, boyfriends, fathers, relatives, employers, and caregivers.

3. Learn why some men are violent. Men are not naturally violent. There have been societies with little or no violence. Studies over the past century have found that half of the tribal societies studied had little or no violence against women, against children, or among men, Furthermore, even today, in many countries the majority of men are not physically violent. Violence is something that some men learn. Men’s violence is a result of the way many men learn to express their masculinity in relationships with women, children, and other men.

4. Wear a white ribbon or wrist band. Change will occur if we accept personal responsibility to make sure it happens. As men who care about the women in their lives, you can take responsibility to help ensure that women live free from fear and violence. Each year, men around the world are wearing a white ribbon up to and on 25 November, the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women. Wearing a white ribbon is your personal pledge never to commit violence against women.

Words that degrade women reflect a society that has historically placed women in a second-class position. One of the most difficult things for men is to learn to challenge other men.

6. Learn to identify and oppose sexual harassment and violence in your workplace, school, and family. Sexual harassment refers to unwanted sexual advances or sexually orientated remarks or behaviours that are unwelcomed by another person. Flirting and joking are fine if they are both consensual and wanted.

7. Support local women’s programs. Around the world, dedicated women have created support services for women who are survivors of men’s violence. These deserve men’s support and their financial backing.

8. Examine how your own behaviour might contribute to the problem. If you’ve ever been physically violent against a woman, if you’ve ever committed sexual assault, if you’ve hit, pushed, threatened, kicked your spouse or girlfriend, then you have been part of the problem. Don’t wait until it happens again. Please act today.

9. Work towards long-term solutions. Ending violence against women won’t happen overnight.

Changes in attitude, behaviours, and institutions take time. It is important to look at how the future generations will be raised, and teach by example.

10. Get involved with the White Ribbon Campaign’s education efforts. It is the largest effort in the world of men working to end men’s violence against women. It is grassroots, relying on mainly volunteers. It needs your support.

Gender equity in workplace COURAGEOUS Conversations provides a platform to take action to prevent violence against women and girls and to promote gender equity and respectful relationships between men and women.

There is no excuse for violence against women. Actions to prevent violence include: Modelling respectful relationships Speaking out about sexism and gender stereotypes Providing safe, inclusive and supportive environments.

Courageous Conversations encourages workplaces to ensure they are providing these environments for their female staff.

The majority of organisations and workplaces actively take steps to ensure they are inclusive and provide an environment that is welcoming to the whole community.

They would agree with statements such as ‘We choose the best person for the job regardless of diversity’, or ‘We promote a respectful work environment and treat everyone equally”.

However, people can often treat others differently without realising they do so.

Unconscious Bias refers to an assumption that people make about another person based on common cultural stereotypes. It is the result of a mental process by which the brain uses associations that are so ingrained that they aren’t noticed or controlled.

Biases cannot be eliminated, however it is important to acknowledge that bias does exist and that various types of bias clearly have an impact

WALWA Vet Practice is a three vet practice in the heart of the Upper Murray region in Victoria.

This busy practice is a truly mixed practice, which is becoming something of a rarity.

Principal vet Dr David Hall and his employees Dr Sarah Dart and Dr Lauren Said all competently service a whole range of species, both medically and surgically.

Dr Rory Burton joins the practice next month after graduating from Melbourne University.

Dr Richard Sanders recently returned as a locum for a few weeks.

Richard had been with practice for four and a half years and left to join his girlfriend at Orange.

He’s now doing seasonal cattle station work in western Queensland and the Northern Territory but will be back to locum again next year.

Bull service testing and bull breakdowns take up a large part of the practice’s workload at this time of the year.

All three vets see their fair share of bull lameness and prepuce injuries and conduct full service exams. Service exams mainly involve examination of bulls’ limbs, feet, and genitalia.

Serving ability and semen testing is also available.

Service testing bulls is an important aspect of any beef production system.

It gives the producer insight into how their bulls are performing and can identify any problem bulls, saving the producer from a poor calf drop due to a non-satisfactory bull.

Franchise ends on a high Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (M) Main cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth Running time: 137 minutes THREE books and four movies down the track, the Hunger Games franchise finally comes to an end with the originally titled Mockingjay Part 2.

But don’t let the deceptively simple title fool you - this is a well-acted, well-written and well-realised end to a franchise that has captured the imagination of a generation.

After being symbolised as the “Mockingjay”, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) is now in the middle of an allout revolution against the autocratic Capitol.

She’s been fighting for her own life for a couple of years now but now she’s fighting for something more - she’s fighting for the freedom of the Districts of Panem but she’s starting to realise that there are bad guys on both sides (is it just me or does Julianne Moore’s hair get whiter as we go through the series - is there any difference between President Snow (the ever brilliant Donald Sutherland) and Coin)?

But with so many people losing their lives (and the death count at the end of the movie rivals Shakespeare at his bloodiest) this is personal now.

Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) teams up with her closest friends including Gale (Liam Hemsworth) and Finnick (Sam Clafin) for the ultimate mission. Together, they leave District 13 to liberate the citizens of war-torn Panem and assassinate President Snow, who’s obsessed with destroying Katniss.

of both the Hunger Games and the war on people. It’s the quiet moments rather than the special effects that have the greatest impact.

The humanity of this series has always been its strength - in a movie world that often seems populated by weak-willed simpering females (Twilight, Shades of Grey) Katniss still stands strong as a positive rolemodel for a generation of young women (and proof positive that a woman can head up an action film).

By STEVE WHITEHOUSE TIME certainly does fly by at this time of year; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to believe that it was only a month ago when I wrote about the excitement building in the Moto GP title race after an epic Phillip Island.

Who would have imagined the drama that was to unfold in Malaysia between Valantino Rossi and Marc Marquez and the impact that would have on the title race.

In the end, I believe that the quickest rider of the year (Jorge Lorenzo) won the title.

After such a memorable year, all I can say is roll on 2016. It should be a cracker of a year with a heap of rule changes and a few scores to be settled between the riders; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shaping up to be another classic year.

As I also mentioned last month, Jason has been to the global dealer conference in London and has come back su-

per excited about the new range of bikes from Triumph.

The classic Bonneville range has come in for a complete update with three new motors, a water cooled hi torque 900cc and two new water cooled 1200cc motors. One hi torque and one hi horsepower and a new range of bikes too carry the motors and while they stay true to their classic heritage and styling, they are totally modern bikes featuring ride by wire, rider modes, traction control and ABS brakes just to name a few of the new features.

The Speed Triple is also in for a major update gaining engine updates, ride by wire, rider modes, traction control LED indicators and single-sided swing arm to name a few.

One of my favourites the Tiger explorer also gets a major update for 2016 with a host of updates that will keep it at the top of the market.

Triumph has also promised

another 25 new models over the next five years so the future certainly does look bright for Triumph and we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait for the new models to start arriving next.

Locally, the Albury Wodonga motorcycle club ran a hugely successful speedway meeting under lights last weekend at the Lincoln causeway complex.

The meeting was held to commemorate 10 years since the tragic death of local speedway star Ashleigh Jones.

It was a quality field of riders which included 2012 world champion Chris Holder and was a fantastic night of racing held in front of a large crowd.

The club and all involved are to be congratulated on a speldid performance.

Dash cams for young drivers MORE parents are purchasing dashboard cameras for their newly licenced children as a way to keep their offspring safe behind the wheel, according to comparethemarket.com.au.

Recent research has shown that parents have adopted the new technology to monitor their child’s driving and record incidents as road toll statistics reveal a 17-year-old driver with a P1 licence is four times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than a driver over 26 years.

Comparethemarket.com.au spokesperson Abigail Koch says, “An Insurance Council survey shows that 7 per cent of drivers have a dash-cam fitted to their cars and, of those car owners who do not have a dash-cam fitted, more than one in eight (13 per cent) say they intend to fit one in the next 12 months.”

Dash Cam Owners Australia owner Troy Van Ryan confirms that a key contributor to this growth in dash cam sales is parents buying the in-car cameras for their newly licenced children.

“We have seen a big increase in dash cam purchases for the younger driver.

Parents understand that dash cams can record any incident their child may be involved in and that means blame will be correctly apportioned. We also know that parents use dash cams with GPS to monitor their child’s driving to make sure they are being safe on the roads.”

Abigail says, “While the use of a dash cam in a car will not reduce premiums for a young driver, it will certainly help if the worst happens and the young driver is not to blame.”

1 Parental prudence - Abigail says, “Dash cams with GPS functionality can act like a ‘black box’ system, recording everything the young drivers does including their speed. This can play a part in the negotiations between parent and child around use of a car and staying safe on the roads, especially in the child’s first months of driving.

“Many parents feel safer when they can monitor their child’s driving - and most will look through some footage to check things like speed, road position

and any risky behaviour like overtaking.

This provides a good basis for the parent and child to discuss how the child is actually driving, rather than how they say they are driving,” Abigail adds.

2 Apportioning blame - When accidents happen, fault is usually easily apportioned when a dash cam’s footage is reviewed. This means where another driver is to blame for an accident, the young driver can present dash cam footage as evidence. Abigail says, “With dashboard camera, you’re lowering the likelihood of having to pay for damage if an incident is not the young driver’s fault.”

3 Insurers will use footage - Most

Abigail says, “Not only does this reinforce a strong message about not touching or looking at devices in your car, some cams can be set up to film inside the car also, so if a parent suspects their child is a serial texter, this could be another useful monitoring tool.”

5 Police powers - “Make sure the young driver knows that the police do have powers to take the footage if there has been an offence. This can be a good deterrent to speeding and other dangerous driving, which, for some kids can be a greater motivation to stay safe than being told off by a cross parent,” says Abigail. “Your late-teen child is less likely to take risks such as racing friends or speeding to impress friends if they know the dash cam is recording their driving.”

THE ability to change a flat tyre is a skill every motorist should have. However, according to local tyre expert Graeme Edgar, most of us only practise it when necessity demands.

Having a spare tyre that’s in good condition and knowing where to locate your car’s jack is a good start. But there are some steps you can follow to make changing a flat tyre easier - and safer.

First of all, loosen the wheel nuts while the tyre is still on the ground. Then, once you have begun to use the jack to raise the car, put the spare tyre under the axle of the affected wheel.

Unsafe indirect asbestos exposure Time to service air-conditioner THE recent early hot spell is a stark indicator that summer is looming, and with many air-conditioners being turned on for the first time in some months, RACV says it is time to have the cooling system serviced.

RACV Home Services General manager Aaron Flavell said that now was the right time for Victorians to book a service of their airconditioning systems to ensure they operated safely and efficiently this summer.

“During last year’s hottest months of December, January, February and March, RACV Emergency Home Assist tradespeople responded to almost 800 members’ callouts where home cooling systems had stopped working,” Mr Flavell said.

“One of the issues is that airconditioners are usually switched off for long periods over the cooler months and are used extensively

when temperatures soar.

Mr Flavell said preventative measures included cleaning or changing the filter or pads, inspecting seals and clearing debris from outside units.

“For both safety and efficiency reasons, homeowners should have units serviced by a professional regularly, preferably before the start of summer.

“While RACV Emergency Home Assist is ready to respond 24/7 when a home emergency occurs, it’s best when these emergencies can be avoided.

“Basic maintenance by the homeowner may be possible for some systems, however it’s important to call in the professionals for an annual service, especially when working at a height is involved,” Mr Flavell said.

A MOTHER of three is urging every Australian to ensure their workplace is asbestos compliant, after contracting mesothelioma, despite never working directly with the asbestos.

Tonya Fenton, 55, from Brisbane, has only ever worked in offices. She has never carried out DIY renovations, washed dusty clothes or handled asbestos-ridden debris.

But last year, Tonya was diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma after being exposed to dust from the Expo 88 demolition site adjacent to an office where she worked in the mid-1980s.

Dust containing asbestos from the demolition of fibro homes and concrete pipes coated her desk, clothes, shoes and car at the end of every work day.

At one point, the dust was so overwhelming, her employer hired a company to provide fresh towels to clean work spaces and even had to have the office plants wiped down every few days.

Ms Fenton said she was never warned about the potential dangers of asbestos exposure.

“I would never have agreed to be anywhere near the demolition site if I’d known it was dangerous, but my employer never raised any concerns,” Ms Fenton said.

“I spent my 30th wedding anniversary undergoing chemotherapy, after finding out I had mesothelioma just one month beforehand.

“My warning to workers and employers everywhere is to take the time to learn the dangers of asbestos, or you may find yourself fighting for the time it takes away from you and your loved ones.”

Slater and Gordon Asbestos Lawyer Martin Rogalski said Ms Fenton’s case was an example of the emerging “third wave” of asbestos exposure, following the first wave of asbestos miners and the second wave of tradespeople who worked directly with asbestos.

“The third wave of asbestos exposure includes demolition workers, home renovators and others who are disturbing materials that contain asbestos,” Mr Rogalski said.

“It’s amazing how many people are complacent about asbestos, even after public awareness campaigns. The consequences for themselves, as well as those around them, can be deadly.”

As well as high-risk occupations, including the construction and automotive industries, Mr Rogalski highlighted six sources of asbestos exposure many people aren’t commonly aware of: 1. Proximity to non-compliant demolition and construction sites, factories and asbestos mines; 2. DIY renovations, especially: Houses built before the mid-1980s; About one in three Australian houses built before 1983 contain substantial asbestos.

Anything made from bonded asbestos cement including: - Fibro sheeting (flat and corrugated) - Water, drainage and flue pipes - Roofing shingles - Guttering - Backyard sheds and fences - Drywall - Attic and roof insulation - Insulation around cables 3. Washing clothes worn by people exposed to asbestos; 4. Debris from bushfires, cyclones, floods and other natural disasters; 5. Rubbish dumps that fail to handle asbestos waste according to requirements; 6. Old and disused parks, especially children’s playgrounds that have fallen into disrepair.

Mr Rogalski said mesothelioma took, on average, almost 40 years to develop from first exposure and by that time, people might not remember where they came into contact with the material.

“That’s why it’s important, if you think you have been exposed to asbestos, that you record as many details as possible.”

Slater and Gordon has a National Asbestos Register where people can record their potential exposure so that information can be accessed in the future if needed.

With a median house price of just $170,000, Myrtleford in the state’s north east also offers affordability to buyers.

As does the Northern Grampians town of Stawell, which has a median house price of $178,750.

WHILE median house prices have increased across the state, savvy buyers can still snap up a bargain.

Regional centres are increasingly attractive to first home buyers with improved public transport, roads and new infrastructure providing the ideal combination of space, lifestyle and affordability.

New REIV data shows the most affordable homes are located in the Latrobe Valley in eastern Victoria.

In the year to 30 September, Morwell was the state’s most affordable town with a median house price of $150,000. Located just 130km from the CBD, neighbouring Moe was

the year to a median of $196,000, up from $178,000 for the same period last year.

Solid price growth was also recorded for Horsham, up more than 20 per cent in the 12 months to 30 September to a median house price of $226,000 - another of the state’s most affordable towns.

Other affordable regional towns making the list include Maryborough ($205,000), north west of Ballarat, and the Geelong suburb of Norlane ($220,000).

Meanwhile, regional Victoria is also attractive to investors. Investors look at rental yields - that is, the property’s annual rental as a percentage of the purchase price - and some high rental yields are on offer at present.

One-unit and two-bedroom houses in regional Victoria delivered the highest returns of any property type in the 12 months to 30 September, with yields of 5.4 and 5.2 per cent respectively.

Three-bedroom homes were also popular, delivering a gross rental yield of 4.8 per cent.

These returns are significantly higher than returns in the popular inner Melbourne suburbs of Balwyn North and Malvern East, which generated yields of only 1.6 and 2 per cent respectively for threebedroom houses.

Local Sport Speedway title Holder’s Chris

By TANIA PHILLIPS A CROWD of more than 2500 was on hand for the Ashley Jones Memorial Speedway Meet under lights at Diamond Park, Lincoln Causeway, on Saturday night.

The meeting was run by the Albury-Wodonga Motorcycle Club to mark the 10th anniversary of the passing of club member and Albury local Ashley Jones who died following a racing accident at Myrtleford Speed in November 2005.

The event was won by 2012 World Speedway Champion, Speedway Grand Prix rider and five times Australian Championship winner Chris Holder - a close friend of Ashley’s with Jack Holder in second, Max Fricke third and Justin Sedgmen in fourth.

AWMCC club president Shane Clare said it was a very successful event.

“The crowd was 2500 plus by our gate takings / estimates,” he said.

“There were a lot of families, which is what we are trying to promote, and a really good family atmosphere. There were no crowd incidents, and the meeting ran very smoothly.

“No injuries to the competitors and they all were very complimentary about the venue.”

Ashley was a young rider with great potential and a bright future in the sport of speedway motorcycle racing.

Following significant success in Australia through the junior ranks and into a senior career, Ashley completed a championship winning season in the British Premier Speedway League during 2005 riding for the Kings Lynn Stars.

This season established Ashley as an international level rider and he was set to return to the Stars in 2006 for their title defence.

Unfortunately Ashley’s full potential was never realised as he died following injuries sustained from an accident during his first meeting back in Australia.

Wodonga girls are hockey champions IF winners are grinners, then there are plenty of reasons for Year 9 and 10 girls hockey team members at Catholic College Wodonga to smile.

The girls have just come home with the State champion title for the Victorian School Sport system, beating Balwyn in a tense nail-biting final one-nil, scoring the winning goal in the final minute.

However, their path to the grand final was much more decisive.

The girls got off to a strong start, defeating Melbourne GC 3-1 before recording the same score-line against Warrnambool before finally beating Frankston High School 5-0 to top their pool and go through to the final.

The impressive performance made them Intermediate Girl State Champions.

The girls had already competed against regional schools, winning the Hume region competition to reach the final eight and play in Melbourne on Thursday 12 November.

Local clubs, athletes and supporters will be out in force on the day ensuring a carnival atmosphere at “Base Camp” with a barbecue planned at the Beyers Street park, with everyone encouraged to come out and enjoy the day to cheer the riders on.

“With the mid December timing, I am hoping many people will get into the Christmas spirit to make it a great day for enjoying something different, pack the picnic rug and share it with friends and family” Although working hard to promote his Movember event, Featonby also sees the irony as this is often the opposite approach men take to discussing and dealing with their own health issues.

“Their own health is not something guys like to talk about, so hopefully by spreading awareness of the Movember cause will encourage men to feel more confident and take control, that’s the real aim of my challenge”
