THE teenage girl is beamed live into Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to talk about the havoc wreaked on her family by her father’s explosive temper.

She should be home studying for the VCE exam that awaits her the next day.

Instead, she is describing the emotional and physical violence that punctuates domestic life for her, her mother and sibling.

Whether her father is found guilty or not, the girl and her family are living in a prison as harmful, restrictive and frightening as the real thing.

This week the Journal once again joins the chorus of voices calling for an end to family violence.

This special edition, published to coincide with White Ribbon day on 25 November, highlights the harrowing stories of victims

and reflects on the parade of anger, denial and despair which confront magistrates in their daily work.

We reflect on the Challenge Family Violence project, a collaboration between men across Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia, which wound up earlier this year due to a lack of government funding, and speak to police and welfare services about what it is like on the family violence front line.

We think shining a light on this once taboo subject can only help foster understanding and action and help rid our communities of this cruel and destructive scourge.

Neeti with pictures of her abusive father and husband. 147109 “I thought if I left, where would I go? It wasn’t until a single mother’s pension came in that I’d think I could do it.”

Her advice for women in abusive relationships is to get help from a family violence service.

Therapy and Christian faith has also helped salve the wounds and raise her from a self-medicated spiral of Valium, morphine and alcohol.

Along the way she survived two medication overdoses.

Her psychiatrist tells her not to just talk about the “past stuff”, all the negative messages from the significant men in her life.

Instead the doctor reinforced that she was a good woman, mother and “worthwhile human being” until it started to sink in.

Nevertheless, Neeti said her body and mind retain a traumatic memory.

“When I was five, I found my four-month-old sister dead in a bassinet,” Neeti said.

“I found mum on the doorstep crying. The police came and took her away.”

After her acquittal, the mother returned home but “wasn’t quite right”.

“I believe if my mother had have had a husband that loved her and wanted to be with her - it would have been a different story.

“There’s been a side of me that has wanted to be loved and be a good person.”

Her eldest brother was “belted” by their father and later couldn’t hold a job.

He got addicted to morphine after a serious motorbike accident and died of a heroin overdose.

Neeti’s mother and another abused drug-using brother were committed to an asylum by her father.

It’s a whole family’s tale of woe which Neeti can trace to her own mother’s depraved upbringing.

Neeti’s mother was forced as a 10-year-old by her own mother to sleep with an older man, then met her future husband and got pregnant at 13.

That child was adopted out by the Anglican Church.

Later Neeti’s mother, who suffered post-natal depression, was acquitted of murdering Neeti’s four-

HOME has been a house of horrors for ‘Neeti’ both as a child and as a wife.

At 65, the Noble Park grandmother’s hands tremble as she recounts the beatings, threats to kill and the demeaning insults that punctuate her life.

If Neeti was now in the same situation with an abusive partner, she’d “shut my mouth and run”.

“You don’t stay.

“I tried and tried to stay. I tried to get them to love me and nothing worked.”

Neeti grew up with violence. She tells how her father savagely beat her and threatened to kill her, and how he fought drunkenly with his mother and stepmothers.

During one brawl in the bathroom, a stepmother had the tops of her fingers severed by the father’s cut-throat razor.

Then her own first husband - “a big drinker and swearer” - lashed out “even before we got to the altar”. One of his blows dislodged her front tooth.

She remembers him berating and screaming at her, calling her stupid.

After she had an abortion at 19 - the biggest regret in her life - the husband left her for another woman.

Neeti chose her second husband because he came from a good family.

He’d come home from his managerial corporate job, and tell her repeatedly she was “f***ed in the head” and that “men in white coats are coming to get you”.

During an argument over money, he kneed her pelvis and slammed her to the floor in front of their children.

“My kids, except for my second daughter, have blamed me over the years.”

It’s striking that Neeti didn’t leave her husbands but the other way around.

Nor did she report the violence to police - she didn’t believe police could or would help at the time.

FAMILY violence may not be what many people think it is.

Head of the Casey Family Violence Unit (CFVU) Sergeant Ian Lane said control was the real crux of the universal problem.

“Awareness campaigns that show victims with black eyes often bring it home for people but don’t highlight other forms that women are falling victim to,” Sgt Lane said.

Sgt Lane has been in charge of the CFVU for two years and said threats and economic abuse were the most common forms of control.

“Contrary to popular belief, most of our work isn’t offences of physical violence,” he said.

“We see economic abuse where one partner is being held against their will and threats are made to take away credit cards or the partner is only given $10 or $15 a week to live off. Or money is only provided for household costs and nothing is left for them to buy things they may want.”

Sgt Lane said controlling male partners who control the family budget can often segregate their partner.

“Isolating a partner and ensuring they don’t leave the home and aren’t allowed to mix in a social circle or make friends is another form of abuse,” he said.

Coercive and threatening behaviour in a nonsexual manner was another facet of family violence and Sgt Lane said such abuse can come in very simple ways.

“Threats like ‘if dinner is not on the table by the time I am home’ I will do such and such to you and a lot of verbal, emotional abuse goes on with this type of family violence.”

Sgt Lane encouraged victims to contact police.

“The rise in family violence offences is a good thing,” he said. “If family violence reports went down I’d ask myself why because I don’t know that enough is being done at the moment to stem the flow of these types of offences.

“It’s one of those things that the government and police can never do enough of to help prevent.”

Group’s burning determination

By GARRY HOWE A FIRE lit in the conscience of more than 100 community leaders across Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia as part of the three-year Challenge Family Violence program that will never be extinguished.

That’s the opinion of Christiaan O’Dea from the Department of Justice and Regulation who was part of the ground-breaking project that winds up this month.

“I challenge participants to continue with their work in this area,” he told a recent showcase event at the City of Casey.

“This program has lit a fire within this group that cannot be extinguished.”

The Challenge Family Violence program enlisted the help of predominantly male community leaders across the three municipal areas to pledge their support for the White Ribbon principles and seek to change attitudes and behaviour towards women in their spheres of influence.

They participated in a series of workshops to be better informed about attitudes towards

women in society that can lead to family violence - things like gender inequality, stereotyping and male privilege.

Then Cardinia Mayor Leticia Wilmot applauded the initiative as fostering prevention through leadership.

“The program focused on men and the faith and sporting communities and had dedicated women leading the way,” she said.

Cr Wilmot said the issue of family violence needed a whole-of-community response and the Challenge program went a long way to achieving that.

“It was able to use community leaders as agents for change,” she said.

Casey Mayor Sam Aziz noted that Victoria Police respond to 70,000 family violence cases each year.

“This has to change,” he said.

“We must get to a place where every woman and child feels safe.”

“People didn’t talk about it, let alone act on it,” she said.

“I am proud to be a part of an organisation that is taking such a public stance.

“The people who will benefit are those in-

volved in violent relationships, whom will be for not much longer.”

Men urged to speak out and speak up for women TWENTY years ago, family violence was an issue often swept under the carpet.

But times have changed and influential males have recognised that they hold the power to helping reform the attitudes and change the behaviours of other men within society.

On 10 November, the Challenge Family Violence group released a

As well voicing the views of the men, the video highlights the shocking statistics demonstrating the severity of the issue - one in three Australian women will experience physical assault in their lifetime and one in five will experience sexual assault.

The Challenge Family Violence Group was a three-year partnership bringing together the municipalities of Casey, Cardinia and Dandenong to prevent family violence.

Men still behaving badly

Men in denial are commonplace in family violence cases at the court.

They are led from the police cells to the dock often in shock. Often they have been arrested the night before, and never previously been taken into custody before.

It’s part of the police’s stated proarrest and pro-remand policy against such offenders, and the court’s determination to fast-track these cases.

He had told police: “F***. I’m not getting charged with that s***.�

The man didn’t initially appear at court because he was more worried about losing his job.

When he did appear, the magistrate offered him a community-corrections order for a guilty plea. But the accused declined and decided to contest the charges. “So does he prefer to go to jail?� a disbelieving judge said. “You’d be looking at a term of imprisonment for strangulation. It’s taken seriously because of the potential for homicide.

It’s strange how often the men in the dock seem so small and meek.

Their silence is in such contrast to the screaming threats to kill their partner, and the blows they inflict within the sanctum of the family home.

THE man accused of more than 6000 intervention order breaches can’t believe he’s in court.

He’s already told the police that the charges are “bulls***�.

As he waits hours, the stronglybuilt businessman mulls over how he and his five employees are losing a day of work.

He fumes with his arms crossed as he tells the magistrate he’ll plead guilty just so he can bring the ordeal to an end.

In his impatience, he’s shoved aside a Victoria Legal Aid lawyer in midsentence as she’s addressed the judge on his behalf.

He makes light of the nearly 6500 calls and texts to his ex-partner in two months - all in breach of an intervention order.

There was never any violence or threats, the man says.

The calls and texts were usually instigated by the ex, who wanted to remove the intervention order anyway. “It’s usually about money,� he says. “Basically, someone doesn’t get their own way so this is a way of getting at me.�

At Dandenong Magistrates’ Court a magistrate often tries to recalibrate the accused’s victim-blaming attitude.

Today, the judge told the man: “A lot of people don’t agree with the law.

That’s why they go to jail. “I have to say you’re on the footstep of jail.�

The magistrate said it was irrelevant whether an estimated 4000 of the calls and messages were instigated by

On other occasions, victims refuse to shirk the issue.

Recently a teenager, on the day before her VCE English exam, testified on video-link against her father.

She spoke of her dad being in “one of those moods�, of him trying to hug and kiss his ex-partner and wanting to become a family again.

The usual stuff, she wearily called it. “You get used to his behaviour.�

She described her dad following them as they drove away, her sister crying due to the situation, him following her mum in the house, the slamming of doors, banging and yelling.

She stayed in the car, holding down the door lock to stop her father coming in. “I keep sticking up for mum and he told me I was a disgrace to him.�

When her grandmother called her phone, she was in tears, worried and scared, she says over the court’s video screen.

The daughter said her relationship with Dad was confusing. “I just avoid him because I know he gets angry very easily. “He gets in arguments over silly things all the time.�

As she testified, her father sat hunched over in the courtroom with tears welling in his eyes.

Over the video link, her father is invisible to her, as he is outside the court as well.

Driven to build her career

By CASEY NEILL CAROLINE Kennedy doesn’t let “archaic stereotypes” hold her back.

“I’ve had a lot of males try to undermine me to make themselves look better,” she said.

“I don’t let it distract me.”

The Hotondo Homes CEO was the guest speaker at the SEBN Showcasing Women in Business breakfast at Highways in Springvale on Friday 20 November.

She doesn’t believe in the “glass ceiling” keeping women from top jobs.

“I’ve always thought ‘if it’s meant to be, it’s up to me’,” she said.

“I hear a lot about equality in the workplace.

“I think there is a responsibility to take ownership.

“I have never allowed some-

body to pay me less than what I think I’m worth.”

Ms Kennedy said working in male-dominated sectors was challenging at times.

At a conference in Fiji, with her husband by her side, a business owner tapped her on the bum and said “looking good”.

“I just stared at him,” she said.

“I didn’t need to say anything.

“That is the kind of environment I operate in.

“But I don’t let it bother me because I know I’m better than that.”

She shot down the question to her husband “what does it feel like to play mum all the time?” with equal confidence, and calmly bats away judgements about her decision to have only one child and to utilise child care.

“Life in business hasn’t been easy.

“But I think my childhood has taught me resilience.”

Ms Kennedy was born in Ireland to an alcoholic mother.

“My dad did his best but he

was away a lot,” she said.

The eldest of three siblings, she looked after the family from a young age.

She recalled having to call the fire brigade at age seven after her mum put on chips to cook then “went and passed out on the bed”.

“She would wake up every morning and she’d put vodka in her tea,” she said.

“Sometimes I think of what we went through and I wonder how we got through it.”

At age 13 she moved to Australia with her eyes on a fresh start.

She was 15 when her mum divorced her dad and moved to “an unsavoury suburb in Brisbane”.

“I used drugs to numb my pain because my mum was really out of control,” she said.

Ms Kennedy even spent

months living on the street until a counsellor rebuilt her confidence and she decided to become a hairdresser.

The career wasn’t enough for her so she accepted a job at a restaurant at Uluru.

“I didn’t know how to set a table,” she said.

“But I learnt quickly.”

Within three months a manager said she wanted to make her a team leader.

“You are a leader and I can see that,” she told her.

She also told her that the man in charge of the place doubted her ability.

“Don’t underestimate me because I will prove you wrong,” she thought.

Ms Kennedy has certainly done just that, moving her way up the chain in hospitality sales and marketing.

Language of safety outlines the steps to a fresh start MULTI-LANGUAGE family violence support is now available from safe steps.

The Family Violence Response Centre launched support brochures in multiple languages for women from non-English-speaking backgrounds at its AGM on Wednesday 18 November.

CEO Annette Gillespie said safe steps aimed to be responsive and accessible to all, and that it had also launched two websites for young people.

The www.safestepschildren.org.au site targets children aged from five to 12 years while www.safestepsyouth. org.au caters for 12 to 18-year-olds.

Ms Gillespie said half of safe steps’ clients were aged under 18, with many women coming through the service fleeing violent homes with their children.

“It is vital that children and young people have access to resources to help them through this traumatic period in

their lives,” she said. “The microsites feature important information written specifically for youth by our family violence specialists.

“The language, images and characters are both appealing and appropriate to the target audiences.

“We hope the sites will be used by schools and community groups to help educate youth about family violence and safe relationships.”

Ms Gillespie said the aim was to help young people to better understand their feelings and what was happening at home and to break the learned behaviour cycle of family violence.

“Children living in homes where there is family violence are in an environment that is unpredictable and filled with tension and fear,” she said.

“The impact can be ongoing and long-lasting. These children are living with trauma.

“Exposure to domestic violence can have significant psychological, behavioural, health and socioeconomic impacts on children, including depression, anxiety and difficulties in school.

“Fear, embarrassment, lack of concentration, isolation and loneliness are just some of the emotions and feelings that a child or young person may feel in this situation.”

Messages make their mark

By CASEY NEILL GENDER-BASED violence will spend 16 days in the spotlight in Dandenong.

Southern Melbourne Integrated Family Violence Partnership will start #16DaysDandy on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women - 25 November and wrap it up on International Human Rights Day on 10 December.

Posters around Dandenong will bear three key messages: “All things being equal, there would be no violence against women.”

“Human Rights are Women’s Rights too.”

“Why doesn’t she leave? Why doesn’t he stop? No excuses.”

The ‘why doesn’t she leave’ message will also appear on 3000 takeaway coffee cups at Dandenong cafes.

A social media campaign will support the cause and a community stall at Dandenong Market on 4 December will also reach out to the community.

The partnership has donated picture books challenging gender stereotypes to Casey and Cardinia libraries, like My Princess Boy and Belinda the Ninja Ballerina.

A workshop on 26 November will explore

how to tackle violence against women and discuss overcoming feelings of isolation, vulnerability and disengagement.

Part of the partnership is Women’s Health in the South East (WHISE).

WHISE CEO Susan Glasgow said the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign would particularly focus on the Dandenong area.

“When you look at the statistics we’re one of the highest figures for family violence in Victoria,” she said.

“There are a number of particular elements to what happens in Dandenong, not least, of course, is different cultural perspectives.”

Ms Glasgow said the focus was slightly different to the White Ribbon campaign.

“White ribbon is the men leading the process,” she said.

“This is talking about gender-based violence, which means that we’re taking on the role of raising awareness about those violence-based incidents.”

Attitudes under pressure in family violence hotspot THE Dandenong region has one of the highest family violence rates in Victoria.

So Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams is joining the 16-day Victoria Against Violence campaign.

It starts on 25 November and will engage and educate people about the links between family violence and gender inequality.

“One in three Australian women experience physical or sexual assault from a male in their lifetime,” Ms Williams said.

“Locally we face a significant challenge, with Dandenong having one of the highest rates of family violence in Victoria.

“Dandenong is the most multicul-

tural area in Victoria and this diversity brings with it different attitudes and understandings of the role of women and of dynamics within the family unit.

“As a community we must stand up and send a clear message that family violence is not acceptable.

“Achieving greater awareness and understanding of this issue is an im-

portant step towards making meaningful change.”

The Victoria Against Violence campaign coincides with the United Nations 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign, which starts on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and concludes on International Human Rights Day, 10 December.

THE Greater Dandenong community is taking to the streets in a public stand against family violence.

The third annual Walk Against Family Violence will start at The Kitchen at Dandenong Market at 10.30am on Tuesday 24 November.

Greater Dandenong Mayor Heang Tak said 2123 family violence incidents were reported in the municipality last yeaar.

“Family violence can happen to anyone, but the more we understand about the causes the more we can address the issue,” he said.

Cr Tak said statistics showed that gender imbalance was a key factor in many instances of family violence.

“To live in a world where our families and communities are free and safe from violence, we must treat all individuals women, men, girls and boys

- with dignity, equality and respect,” he said.

Each year the number of walkers has grown, from 500 in the first year to 700 last year.

“Every walker who joins us is one more voice in the call to end family violence,” Cr Tak said.

The walk will finish in Harmony Square, where guest speakers will include Helen Kapalos and Rob Hulls.

Threat to kill kinder kids

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MOTHER has threatened to burn down an apartment building and to kill her ex-partner, child and the child’s kindergarten mates, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court has heard.

On 15 November, the accused allegedly “took offence” when she phoned her partner, who told her he could only speak to her for a few min-

utes before bedtime.

She allegedly sent text messages threatening the partner, their child, the partner’s mother, the partner’s workmates and children at the child’s kindergarten, prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Tracey Arnold told the court.

The accused then drove to the partner’s apartment building, which she threatened to burn down by throwing

a brick in a pillow case through a window followed by a petrol can.

Police found a brick, pillow case and petrol can at the scene, the court heard.

The mother was taken into custody and charged with stalking.

The accused’s lawyer said the client had spent four years’ “bearing the burden” of supporting her unemployed

partner at home. The accused was not receiving medication for depression, and was at risk of self-harm while in custody, the lawyer said.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell, in noting a prior stalking conviction, declined to give a sentence indication without a mental health assessment of the accused on 16 November.

“These are extraordinarily serious

threats not only to kill her own child but children at a kindergarten.

“It doesn’t get more serious, does it?

“I want to know your client is not a risk to the community before imposing sentence.”

The case was adjourned, pending a Forensicare assessment of the mother on 17 November.

Religions are united in respect GREATER Dandenong’s faith and spiritual leaders are uniting against family violence.

The municipality’s interfaith network members are promoting equality and respect toward women.

Equality between women and men is among the Baha’i faith’s cardinal beliefs.

“So long as these two wings are not equivalent in strength the bird will not fly.

“Until womankind reaches the same degree as man, until she enjoys the same arena of activity, extraordinary attainment for humanity will not be realized.”

The Brahma Kumaris recognise the intrinsic worth of every human being and follow the understanding that equality and respect between men and women is based on the awareness that all are peaceful souls.

Equality is promoted in Buddhism. It is recognised that people are different due to their physical and psychological factors, but that all need to be treated equally.

Christianity teaches that people must love others as they would want to be loved.

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Paul, in Galtians, 3:28 Hindu tradition holds a high regard for and the greatest respect to women within its tradition as seen in the honour it gives for the Goddess, who is portrayed as the feminine embodiment of important qualities and powers.

“Women must be honoured and adorned by their fathers, brothers, husbands, and brothers in law, who desire their own welfare.

“Where women are honoured, there the gods are pleased; but where they are not honoured, no sacred rite yields rewards.

“Where the female relations live in grief, the family soon wholly perishes; but that family where they are not unhappy ever prospers.” - Manu Smriti III.55-59 Islam teaches that Allah Almighty says that all people are equal, regardless of gender.

“The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another.”

- At-Tawbah 9:71 Jewish law fosters the belief that men and women are equal partners within the family unit, and men must behave with the utmost respect to their partners.

“A husband should love his wife as much as he does himself and should respect her more than he respects himself.” - Yevomot 62b Sathya Sai promotes respect and equality of men, women and children to maintain the love, peace and harmony in the family circle.

IT SEEMS hard to get a drink of water these days.

A burglar fled from a vacated, heavily firedamaged home when police arrived, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard last week.

He had scaled the home’s Cyclone security fencing, taken out a TV and collected a pile of copper wiring ripped out of the home.

The raider told police who arrested him several streets away that he had just been thirsty and looking to grab a drink of water.

PUT this other burglar into the category of naive or stupid.

The thief allegedly stole car keys from an elderly resident’s home in a retirement village and then the resident’s car out of a locked garage.

All this happened while the old man was sleeping in bed.

Apparently the burglar, who was facing a lengthy jail term for aggravated burglary, struggled with the concept of ‘retirement village’.

In his own defence, he told police he had no idea his victim was elderly.

TWO men’s confrontation at a Bunnings roundabout turned into a lengthy bun-fight in court.

According to one man’s version he had slowed down in his ute and trailer for a mum and her toddler near the crossing.

Then he’s been overtaken by a guy in a four-wheel drive who, in the process, scraped their vehicle on a median strip sign.

The first driver has then been blamed for side-swiping the four-wheel-drive and charged with leaving the scene of the accident without exchanging details.

MS Nobutts will be out and about in Greater Dandenong over coming months to promote correct disposal of cigarette butts.

She made her first foray into the community on Wednesday 18 November with the council’s litter prevention officer Amy McLoughlin.

The costumed Sustainability Victoria character joins Lily Litterbug and Harry Habitat, working to change habits that harm the environment.

“He started ranting and raving. I told him he was a bloody idiot,” the man told the court.

“There’s no way I’m going to give details to a guy like him.”

JOURNAL columnist Jack Johnson’s life has literally come full circle.

When Jack was born his parents rented a house in McCrae Street, Dandenong, and then attended St Mary’s Primary School with his brothers and sister.

Jack later raised five children with wife Frances in a home he built in MacPherson Street.

Until recently, Jack had left his beloved Dandenong to live with his son in Sherbrooke.

Happily, Jack has now moved back to Dandenong, taking up a place at Southern Cross Care at 82 McCrae Street.

Jack reckons his bedroom at Southern Cross is roughly where his old St Mary’s Primary School stood.

A SELF-described ‘Migrant Team’ has staged an anti“Australian” coup during a rare board spill at a south-east based migrant resource centre.

Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre chairman Brain Oates, who had migrated from the UK, was part of the victorious migrant ticket that ousted four sitting board members.

Mr Oates had urged the meeting to vote for “more diversity on the board, not Australians” in the first board spill in 15 years.

He later told the Journal that the Australian-born members had a “cosy relationship” with one another, a majority that marginalised other groups.

“If there is one particular ethnic group that wants to take over the board, that’s a problem.”

The new board members included migrants of Tamil, English, Albanian and Romanian backgrounds.

Ahead of the meeting, 10 of the 14 sitting board members undersigned a claim that Mr Oakes spread misleading statements.

Oakes’s “incredible” claims that the board wanted to remove migrant board members and appoint only Australian professionals.

“We do not engage in discriminatory attitudes and practices.

“This claim is aimed at creating divisions between members based on ethnicity and professional expertise.”

Mr Oakes said the new board has “new ideas and enthusiasm” - as well as a new business manager and a highprofile, spacious location in Clow Street, Dandenong - to confront a challenging future.

“We need to get out there and come to terms with a brave new world.”

Its funding base is more uncertain because governments are changing to a funding model based on clients’ choice of service.

In that context, the SMRC had just recorded a second consecutive financial deficit of more than $100,000 in 201415.

“The truth is this organisation has to get back in the black this year,” Mr Oates told the meeting.

During the year it closed its fee-for-service migration advice, and its Family Relationship Services for Humanitarian Entrants programs.

Chief executive Jenny Semple said the latter program, a “unique” service in the region, was a particularly great loss.

“Funding was removed from the program across the state, which is not a positive sign when we are all working towards reducing family violence in our community.

“We will aim to look for other means to provide this vital service.”

A FREE mobile laundry service for homeless and disadvantaged people in Dandenong offers more than just clean clothes.

Orange Sky Laundry (OSL) recently set up a permanent washing and drying service at Dandenong Cornerstone Contact Centre on Thursdays and Sundays from 5.30pm to 8pm.

“We are lucky to be across the road from Launch Housing which hands out soap and towels to people who come in to use their showers,” Cornerstone coordinator Don Cameron said.

“But some street people tell me they don’t have anywhere they can wash their clothes so they wear them over again.”

Mr Cameron said the initial response to the laundry van had been very good.

“Their staff are very friendly and welcoming of our patrons and they set up chairs for people to sit down and have a chat while their laundry is being done,” he said.

OSL’s south east service manager Steve Winterton said the chance for a chat was a massive part of the service.

“It’s as much about being a non-judgmental ear to talk to as much as washing their clothes,” he said.

“Some people are really grateful.

“I spoke with one lady who lives out of her car and she was washing her clothing in a public toilet. She was really grateful.”

Ignoring law ends in jail

A SERIAL suspended driver has been jailed after twice flouting a suspended jail sentence.

Johann Michael Vantwest, 27, was picked up for driving while suspended three times in December, April and August, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard.

In his most latter two offences, Vantwest had breached a suspended three-month jail term and a nine-month driving suspension handed down at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court in March.

Vantwest was also charged with driving an unregistered vehicle in Heatherton Road, Noble Park, in April, and possessing cannabis and several bags of methamphetamine when pulled over in Clow Street, Dandenong, in August.

Vantwest temporarily had a warrant for his arrest because he didn’t show up on time for his court hearing on 16 November.

His lawyer told the court late that afternoon that Vantwest was late because he was resolving finances at work, ahead of his first custodial sentence.

The full-time mechanic had no drug and alcohol issues “of any note”, and had a difficult home life with his siblings, the lawyer said.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said there was no discretion but to jail Vantwest who had just “ignored” the law.

She took into account the accused’s age, “appalling” driving record and that it was his first time in jail.

Ms O’Donnell jailed Vantwest for three months - served concurrently with the restored three-month suspended sentence.

JULIAN Hill hopes to take Bruce MP Alan Griffin’s place at next year’s Federal election.

Mr Griffin is retiring from parliament after holding the seat since 1996 - the first time in Australian Labor Party hands since its creation in 1955.

Bruce includes Springvale, Noble Park, Dandenong North and parts of Dandenong.

Mr Hill grew up in Burwood, attended high school in Glen Waverley, and graduated from Monash University with degrees in science and law.

He worked for Mr Griffin for five years from 1995, and has held senior positions within the Victorian Public Service.

Mr Hill was elected to Port Phillip Council at age 25 and became the city’s youngest mayor, and has been an ALP member for more than 20 years.

CARNIVAL ATMOSPHERE FOR LAUNCH More than 1000 people attended the Waterford Rise Carnival on 14 November to celebrate the opening of 20 new display homes.

JACK JOHNSON IS THE AUTHOR OF WHEN THE CLOCK STRIKES, A FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF GROWING UP IN DANDENONG, HIS YEARS TENDING TO THE CITY’S PIPES AND DRAINS AS A PLUMBER AND BRINGING UP A FAMILY WITH WIFE FRANCES IN THEIR BELOVED HOME IN MACPHERSON STREET.

When our service delivery came by cart MANY services that today we take for granted, such as electricity, sewerage and telephones did not exist in the early 1900s and people like the milkman, the baker and the woodman called at the house.

Mr Connaughton and his sons were at that time our local wood merchants.

The wood yard was behind their Victorian weatherboard house on Melbourne Road just past James Street.

Across the front of the property was a high cypress hedge which, like peppercorn trees, seemed to be the norm for houses around Dandenong.

At the end of the hedge was a wide cast-iron and wire farm gate.

Their driveway led to a paddock at the back of the house.

In the paddock was the wood yard

where the one foot blocks of firewood were cut and stacked and where Mr Connaughton kept his four-wheeled wagons and horses.

Much of this wood came by rail trucks from up north where land for farming was being cleared.

The family delivered large blocks of red gum and box and various other types of Australian hardwoods and

many customers burnt Mallee roots in their open fires.

When we were kids, and well into the 1940s, very few people in Dandenong had telephones, so we had to walk from McCrae Street to the woodman’s house and leave a note from mum or dad telling him what type of wood and how many tons were needed.

I remember one day when dad was crook or in hospital Mr Connaughton or one of his sons delivered a day load of fire wood to our house.

We only had a single gate out the front into McCrae Street so he managed to come up the back lane from Power Street and into the back yard through the large double gates.

He was able to throw the load of one foot blocks over the veggie garden

fence near the woodshed.

But, then he had to turn his wagon around in the back yard.

He was doing quite well until the near-side horse decided to go, instead of whoa, causing the side of the wagon to swing in a wider arc.

It hit the corner of our stand-alone dunny which was about half way down the back yard, knocking off its red gum stumps.

Had it not been for the sturdy, almost regulation, pussy willow which grew next to it we would have had a horizontal dunny instead of a vertical one. Mr Fink was our next woodman and his wood yard was on the corner of McCrae and Walker streets.

He lived in a house in Walker Street next to the O’Brien property and just

over the back corner of our next house at 40 Clow Street.

Apart from the post office, the only people who had telephones were doctors, police and some shops.

Those first phones were wooden boxes with a fixed speaker or mouthpiece and an ear piece on a cord which hung in a cradle on the side.

When you lifted the receiver off the hook you wound a small handle on the side of the box.

That put you in touch with the manual exchange at the post office and they connected you to the number you needed. Most numbers were only two or three digits, vastly different from today’s world of mobiles, where most of the phone call time is taken up dialling the number

Venomous visitor

By CASEY NEILL A SNAKE on the loose in a Dandenong South factory wasn’t an unusual situation - but the species was.

The Reece Plumbing national distribution centre operations manager Bill Lewis said workers discovered a bright green snake on Tuesday 17 November.

“At first they thought it was a prank,” he said.

“The guy knocked the carton and it put its head up. It couldn’t move anywhere because it was stuck to the sticky tape.

“We don’t know how long it was stuck there.”

Mr Lewis about four months ago found part of a snake during a walk around the building, and called in snake handler Raymond Hoser to run a snake safety course for staff.

“We knew to just leave it,” he said.

“He told us that most people get bitten because they stand on them or they muck around with them.

“Most of our containers get fumigated. Because this one didn’t have any wood it in, it didn’t get fumigated.”

Mr Hoser - self-dubbed the Snake Man - said the reptile was a venomous white-lipped green tree viper from south-east Asia.

“It was unusual. I’ve never caught a viper before,” he said.

“I get one international visitor a year on average.

“It had been in the box since July. That’s when the box came in from China.

“He was skinny but in good health.”

Mr Hoser said there were lots of venomous snakes in Dandenong.

“The industrial area around Dandenong South is particularly good for snakes,” he said.

He said running water, dense blackberries and industrial storage provided the perfect environment.

“In Dandenong, by far the dominant snake is copperheads,” he said.

“You also get tiger snakes in the area but they’re very scarce.”

He urged anyone who spotted a snake to walk away.

“You will never be bitten by a snake unless you mistreat it,” he said.

“If you want to be like Steve Irwin and bash the cr*p out of things, something will probably kill you in the end.”

A Department of Agriculture and Water Resources spokesperson confirmed biosecurity officers had been alerted to the discovery of an exotic snake and had collected it for formal identification.

“Live snakes, like any live animal, pose a high biosecurity risk to Australia because they can carry pests and diseases that aren’t present here, potentially affecting our agricultural industries, health and the environment,” they said.

“The department will review the likely pathway for the snake entering the country further as more information comes to hand.”

Muslim victims of terror

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS HAZARA refugee and photojournalist Barat Ali Batoor says Muslims, refugees and asylum seekers are among those suffering from recent Islamist terrorist attacks.

Mr Batoor, as guest speaker at the Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre (SMRC) AGM on 18 November, gave condolences to victims of recent atrocities including in France, Lebanon and Kenya.

He also referred to seven Hazaras “brutally slaughtered” by militants in Kabul three days before the recent Paris massacres.

Among the victims, who had been kidnapped several months ago, was a nine-year-old girl.

The violent groups responsible for the killings did not portray “true Islam” and would cause more challenges to refugees and asylum seekers in Europe and Australia, he said.

“Real” Muslims’ lives were being adversely affected by these terrorists.

Like other refugees who had fled persecution, Mr Batoor felt the “pain” that afflicted those victims and their communities.

Mr Batoor’s own Hazara community had suffered persecution in Afghanistan and even in their “safe haven” in Quetta, Pakistan, for more than a century, he said.

At great danger, he returned to his birth place of Quetta to document the perils his people faced.

A trailer of his resulting film Batoor: A Refugee Journey, which is soon due for international release, was shown at the AGM in Dandenong.

The film shows grieving families with horrific tales such as body parts being found on top of buildings after a terrorist bomb blast, and a busload of people being attacked by gunmen.

“People of the Hazara community want to find a way out of there,” Mr Batoor told the gathering.

Disgusting dumpers

By CASEY NEILL DUMPED rubbish is costing Greater Dandenong about $370,000 to clean up.

But the council is taking on the dumpers with fines and court appearances.

Councillor Roz Blades contacted the Journal on 16 November after spotting “just one load of rubbish that councils have to contend with” next to Copas Park in Noble Park.

“Just disgusting, isn’t it,” she said.

“It is a lovely little park, well-liked by the residents.

“There used to be charity bins there but they were removed because there was rubbish all around them.”

The council’s city planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman said the council in 2014-’15 spent about $370,000 on disposing rubbish dumped in the community.

It received and acted on 3291 complaints about dumped rubbish and took a further 3177 proactive actions.

“Dumping rubbish is a crime,” he said.

Mr Bosman said the council in 2014’15 issued 28 official warnings and 315 infringement notices in relation to littering and illegal dumping.

“The council also conducted 16 successful court prosecutions for such offences,” he said.

Infringement penalties range from $303 to $3003 and court-imposed fines could be as high as $9100.

“Clean-up costs can also be awarded against offenders,” he said.

Mr Bosman encouraged residents to use the SnapSendSolve app to notify the council about rubbish dumped on public land.

“You can download the free app to your mobile device and then use it to snap photos and report problems while out and about,” he said.

“The app uses mapping technology to determine which authority is responsible for an issue and forwards the report to the right place.”

Playgroup learns how to seriously play the game

By CASEY NEILL A DANDENONG North playgroup has the state’s best team at its helm.

Rosswood Playgroup won the Community Committee of the Year title at the Playgroup Victoria Awards on Thursday 12 November.

Enrolment officer Daniela McCole was shocked when she was called to the stage to accept the honour.

“We were nominated last year as well and we weren’t successful,” she said.

“It’s definitely a credit to the members and the history of the playgroup.

“It’s the efforts that everybody’s put in year on year to create the place and turn it into what it is today.

“It’s great to have the award come at such an important time for us. It’s a real turning point for us.”

Rosswood has just finished renovations that were years in the making and is trying to recruit more committee members.

“It’s been skeletal with the committee members over the past few years,” Ms McCole said.

“We’ve had a lot of change in the last six months.

“We’ve got all new amenities - new toilet facilities there for the kids, the kitchen’s been renovated so we can see out to where the kids are playing outside.

“The members have been saving money for years and years and have been waiting for those renovations to be completed.”

Ms McCole said Rosswood had a relaxed environment where children could play and carers could bond.

“Parents choose how sessions are run.

Some share food, others don’t. Some structure their activities, others wing it,” she said.

“All groups pack up in the last 15 minutes of the session and leave the premises ready for the next group to arrive.

BUS routes proposed for Keysborough South have serious flaws, say campaigners.

About 40 residents attended a Public Transport Victoria (PTV) information session on the proposals at Keysborough College on Wednesday 18 November.

Councillor Matthew Kirwan said the routes included a section of Keylana Drive in the Hidden Grove estate that already had traffic problems at peak periods.

He said the routes did not go past the proposed sites for key infrastructure - such as shopping centres and community

New bus routes in a real jam with residents

Cr Kirwan said a 20-minute loop service including Noble Park Railway Station, Parkmore, Perry Road, Hutton Road, Chapel Road and Cheltenham Road, would better service the area.

“Particularly at peak times when people are trying to get from Keysborough South to the Dandenong Railway Line,” he said.

“While it is great that the bus routes were proposed, there are serious flaws in both of them.”

tion Group spokeswoman Nina Kelly said more than 600 existing homes off Perry Road and five places of worship on Hutton Road were excluded from the routes.

“And there is no future infrastructure growth factored into the route,” she said.

“The route will not be rolled out until the second half of 2016.

“By that time the proposed Woolworths on Hutton Road will be near completion and there will be no bus within 850 metres.”

Ms Kelly said buses would run every 40 minutes during the day and every 60 minutes after 7pm.

“Research provided to us shows a direct route with higher frequency - every 20 minutes has greater patronage,” she said.

“We believe people will still use their car to get to railway stations with this inadequate frequency.”

She said the service would not link with the three major bus connections at Parkmore or the Smart Bus on Springvale Road.

“Safety is another factor. The proposal has the last bus around 9pm however this will not link to the last buses servicing Parkmore between 9.30pm and 10pm,” she said.

Ms Kelly said the Keysborough community had been fighting for the bus extension for eight years.

“We want it right the first time and to not have to continue petitioning the State Government for improvements down the track,” she said.

PTV has announced a drop-in session at Parkmore on Thursday 26 November from 3pm to 5pm.

A SHOTGUN, pen pistols and rifles were among items seized from a 20-year-old Dandenong North man during a police search.

Greater Dandenong Tasking Unit executed a drugs warrant at a Garfield Court property on Friday 13 November.

They allegedly found two stolen vehicles - a $40,000 Volkswagen and a Holden Commodore valued at $7000 - with a loaded shotgun under a passenger seat and a loaded .22 pistol in a driver’s door well.

Officers allege they uncovered three grams of methylamphetamine, or ice, in a centre console and after heading inside the house found 37 grams of cannabis in a dining room cupboard.

They seized various parts of pen pistols and other firearms, shotgun shells, .22 calibre ammunition and knuckle dusters from the garage.

A second search warrant executed at a storage facility in Springvale Road, Mulgrave, used by the man allegedly uncovered three stolen motorcycles - an $8000 Suzuki, a $24,000 BMW and a $5000 Yamaha 250.

Cyclist killed A DRIVER has hit and killed a cyclist in Noble Park.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which involved a white Holden sedan travelling north-west along the Princes Highway just before 7am on Monday 16 November.

The collision occurred near Dunblane Road.

The cyclist, a 52-year-old Noble Park man, was taken to the Monash Hospital where he later died. The male driver stopped at the scene.

Merger is sum of its parts

By CASEY NEILL MICHAEL Ryan’s name will no longer appear on the accounting firm he started almost 30 years ago.

But he couldn’t be happier.

Aston Ryan Malcolm and Waters Dace announced at Sandhurst Golf Club on Thursday 19 November that from 1 January they would join together as Ashfords.

Mr Ryan joined with sole trader Paul Aston in 1985 and they added Dennis Malcolm to the mix in 1986.

He’s the only founding partner of either firm still actively involved in operations.

“I am now 61 years of age, a baby boomer, the oldest professional in the practice, and now have the comfort that my succession plan is in place,” he said.

“I am excited by the merger as it gives our firm some real clout in the south-east suburbs region.

“We now have the next generation of professionals ready to

drive the business to new levels and be equipped with the knowhow, technical skills and business acumen to cater for client needs.”

Mr Ryan said Ashfords would have offices in Dingley and Dandenong, “where many of our clients are based, and that location provides a real competitive edge for us against our city firm counterparts”.

“I am proud to say I have never lost sight of the fact that clients always come first and even after volatile times in the investment markets along with the good times, the practice has never had one complaint made against it,” he said.

Partner Richard Vaughan said the two firms brought together their audit divisions under the Ashfords banner last year.

“It was dipping the toe in the water,” he said.

“A total merger was in the back of our minds.”

Partner Greg Cusack said setting up headquarters in the same building as M and K Law-

yers in Dandenong was “a natural fit”.

The two share many clients and most are Dandenong-based.

The new company will have more than 60 people on the pay roll, making it the largest in the region.

“A lot of our team have had city experience but we’re suburbs boys. We’re not Collins Street imports,” Mr Cusack said.

He said being a larger firm would make it easier to attract new talent.

He’s been with Aston Ryan Malcolm for more than 25 years, and most business associates he was introduced to when he started were gone.

“A lot of the people I speak to never met Aston, Ryan, Malcolm, Waters or Dace,” he said.

But the meeting rooms in the Dingley office would be named after the founding partners - Aston, Ryan and Malcolm.

Mr Cusack said it would be a nice touch for older clients and a story to tell new clients.

New hotel makes its reservation with $25m A $25 MILLION hotel is taking shape in central Dandenong.

The Quest Dandenong Central development at 2-10 Walker Street is part of the $290 million Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative.

At a site inspection on Thursday 19 November were Dandenong MP Gabri-

elle Williams, Quest CEO Zed Sanjana, Pellicano managing director Nando Pellicano and Places Victoria representatives.

Mr Sanjana said domestic overnight expenditure for business tourism in the state increased by 21 per cent in the year to June compared to the previous period.

“Within the same period, international overnight expenditure also grew,” he said.

Ms Williams said business tourism and investment were keys to Dandenong’s growth and rejuvenation.

“This development by Quest Apartment Hotels is another significant step in the continued improvement of Central

Dandenong,” she said.

Quest Dandenong Central will feature 95 apartments in studio, one, two and three bedroom configurations, plus onsite parking, a conference room and gymnasium.

The property is expected to open in August next year.

A $36 MILLION aged care centre has created 100 new jobs in Keysborough.

Former Victorian Governor David de Kretser and Greater Dandenong councillor Roz Blades officially opened Arcare’s doors on Stanley Road on Wednesday 11 November.

WALLARA has made a lasting impression on paralympian Don Elgin.

It all started with a request from the Dandenong-based disability support service for a guest speaker.

Mr Elgin established StarAmp Global for amputees who need a manager. It was the first service of its kind in the world.

“I could sense there was more to the organisation,” he said.

He sat down for a chat with CEO Phil Hayes-Brown and hasn’t looked back.

“It’s making a massive difference and impact on residents that were otherwise overlooked,” he said.

“I thought I could add to that. They invited me onto the board.”

Mr Elgin was born without the lower half of his left leg but explains in his new biography One Foot on the Podium that it never held him back.

He won bronze in pentathlon at the Sydney Paralympic Games, took home three medals in Athens and managed the athletics team in London.

“My work at Wallara has really only just scratched the surface,” he said.

“The way to help corporate business to connect with disability services with Wallara, I think that will be the space.”

Mr Elgin said Wallara’s work was “a game-changer”.

Draft picks nearing

By JARROD POTTER THE lead-up to the AFL National Draft on Tuesday, and subsequently Friday’s AFL Rookie Draft, is almost over.

By the time the names have been all called, the Dandenong Stingrays look all but certain to produce their fifth number one draft pick in key defender Jacob Weitering, 18, from Mt Martha, who has held the football world’s interest for the past few months.

On top of Weitering, the Stingrays should add a few more draftees to their history with Kieran Collins (from Langwarrin), Bailey Rice (Beaconsfield), Brandon White (Beaconsfield) as well as midfielder Kurt Mutimer (Narre Warren) and ruckman Gach Nyuon (Narre Warren) all in the mix heading into Tuesday’s draft.

Add to that a number of other players primed for a rookie spot opportunity or to head into the VFL and it’s been a remarkable season for the boys at Shepley Oval.

It starts from the top as Weitering has proven himself match after match, playing for Dandenong, The Peninsula School, the AFL Academy and Vic Country this season.

The level of interest in Weitering didn’t come without reason; he is far and away the best player out of this year’s draftees.

The 195cm defensive dynamo is elite in every facet - marking, spoiling, kicking in play or at the goals plus his true utility to play tall or small.

His skills have translated to winning a shelf-load of awards this year - the Ben Mitchell Medal, a national championship as Vic Country captain, All Australian, TAC Cup Team of the Year and receiving an invite to

While Weitering’s efforts with the ball are impressive on their own, he said in July that his focus is teamfirst, what he achieves as an individual is only possible because of his mates helping him on-field.

“Individual accolades come along, but I’m a team man and that’s why I play a team sport,” Weitering said earlier this year.

“Being with the boys is something I’ll look back on - it’s as simple as that.”

Dandenong Stingrays coach Craig Black is acutely aware of Weitering’s prowess and what his

champion player will want to do after the hype and speculation settles down next week.

“You surely don’t need anything on Weiters do you?” Black said laughing.

“He was fantastic, did everything right and was a player you didn’t need to check on and would do everything right.

“He would go about his business, show up and do the work necessary to at the level required - from his point of view I think he would be looking forward to Tuesday night, then rolling up his sleeves and getting them dirty and getting into a pre-season.

“There’s been a lot of hype even during the year about it - so for him he’d be looking forward to being a number, starting again and earning respect at an AFL club and seeing how well he can play.”

Future in his sights - and what a journey

By JARROD POTTER FOOTBALL has been a short but amazingly enjoyable journey so far for Dandenong Stingrays ruckman Gach Nyuon.

Nyuon, 18, who lives in Keysborough, is in line to become the first Greater Dandenong resident to be drafted into the AFL since Alex Woodward in 2011.

His history has a mix of tragedy, opportunity and good fortune - having fled war-torn South Sudan with his family when he was just an infant and settling in Australia as a refugee - but what drives the elite ruck prospect is his future, not his past.

While his football history might not be as long, Nyuon’s story is one jammed full of success.

The 200cm high-leaping ruckman equalled the jumping records of West Coast’s Nic Naitanui at the combine and put his name in bright lights ahead of the draft, but the hard work came this year on the back of rehabilitating a severe knee injury that curtailed his 2014.

“I’ve found that I’ve developed quite well within a short period of time,” Nyuon said.

“I couldn’t have done it without all the guys here.

“Found it hard at the start, not being good at football or knowing much about it off the field, and

“I knew coming back from that injury would be tough - getting my fitness and everything - so I just thought to be really professional in the way I went about it and do everything my strength and conditioning coaches asked.”

With his football history still freshly written, starting in 2012 at Narre North Recreation Reserve, in

three shorts years the athletic ruckman has become an All Australian, national champion and TAC Cup Team of the Year recipient as well as listed in the country’s top-88 draft prospects with an invite to the AFL National Combine.

“It is a massive privilege to be represented in the All Australian squad - I worked really hard for it, I wanted to be the best ruckman in the championships and I was confident of that,” Nyuon said.

“It wasn’t more for me, but for my team first - give the mids first

use and be a link-up target around the ground to help the team win.”

Five AFL clubs have shown interest in Nyuon and three of those sides showed their hand even further having interviewed Nyuon on multiple occasions.

“I’m confident - a bit nervous at the same time, but we’ll just have to wait and see,” Nyuon said.

Dandenong Stingrays coach Craig Black has been one of Nyuon’s biggest supporters and helped the fledgling ruckman make the step up through the TAC Cup ranks and to the verge of a league football career.

“New to the game and his improvement from a 17-year-old to an 18-year-old can’t be underestimated,” Black said.

“When the big G man realised what he had to do with his training output, his consistency in games went up when his work ethic improved.

“He’s still got to understand the demands of AFL footy but that’s the good thing about having a young kid develop - they’re always learning and we hope he gets an opportunity to go and show his traits in the AFL. “His ability to start understanding the game later in the season flourished as well and as long as he gets an opportunity I’m sure he’ll grab it with both hands.”

By JARROD POTTER A wide and varied collection of junior local cricketers are bringing their batting and bowling prowess to the next level.

Players from throughout the Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) have been chosen for higher duties in the Southern Pioneers regional representative teams.

Dandenong Premier cricketers Mick Sweeney (under-18) and Cameron Forsyth (under-16) will coach the up-and-comers throughout the rest of the year, leading up to the January tournament.

Coaching alongside Sweeney is Prabath Nissanka (Casey-South Melbourne) while Forsyth will be aided by Dane Harkin (Casey-South Melbourne), Kierran Voelkl (Casey-South Melbourne) and assisted by Josh Slater (Dandenong).

Rising to challenge

By JARROD POTTER BERWICK up-and-coming basketballer Mason Peatling has pledged to join Eastern Washington University after signing his letter of intent on Wednesday.

Peatling, 18, will move to America in six months ahead of his maiden NCAA Division 1 campaign with the Eagles in 2016/17.

Peatling’s late call up to represent Victoria Metro at the Under-20 Australian Junior Basketball Championships didn’t go unnoticed by the college, who immediately starting communicating with the 200cm power forward college prospect.

His state duties and an excellent debut SEABL season with the Dandenong Rangers had Eastern Washington even keener to sign him.

But the choice came on the back of Eastern Washington’s continued eagerness to sign him, as the college had been in constant contact, even flying coaches out to meet Peatling and his family recently.

The significance of that gesture wasn’t lost on Peatling, who soon after signed on the dotted line.

“They approached me pretty early on in the year after the nationals were pretty quick onto it,” Peatling said. “I was named an emergency then 12 hours later they were talking to me, congratulating me - was bizarre in 12 hours they caught wind.

“It started from there and the ties to Dandenong with previous Dandenong players going there make the decision a lot easier and now I’ve met them and they’re good people, lots of people I can trust.

“I got to know their people and their coaches came out to meet me and my family - that was important - knowing I won’t just be signing up for the basketball program but going into a great situation with the people as well.”

Eastern Washington has turned into mini-Melbourne in many ways with Dandenong alumnus Venky Jois completing his final year in America, while Michael Wearne is currently a freshman on the roster and current Dandenong Ranger Jack Perry could also potentially attend the college after a full scholarship offer.

“Was great when the people there were saying ’we need someone when Venky goes out’ and also knew Michael Wearne, who was at Dandenong and is now freshman this year.

“They’re definitely taking care of their Australians - I wouldn’t say they persuaded me because of that, but it’s great to know they’re very trustworthy.”

There’s one more state championship campaign on the horizon for Peatling, who is currently in the final-17 man squad before the last

cut to the championships team in February and he hopes to get another chance to represent Victoria Metro at the upcoming tournament.

Even with what lies ahead in his basketball journey, Peatling still can’t quite believe everything that has happened in 2015 as a season of highlights went by quickly.

“It’s living in the moment I guess - just passes by before you realise,” Peatling said.

“I played my first state team, was a really great experience and get back there again and have a bigger role in the team.

“Playing for the Dandenong SE-

ABL team was a definite highlight, did some fun stuff when we went on the road and went to Tasmania - to go there to play basketball - in Brisbane to play basketball.

“Basketball has taken me places this year I wouldn’t have been otherwise and I’ll be going to America because of basketball again and 2015 was about embracing the opportunity basketball provides.”

He wanted to thank his parents for their support and especially his girlfriend Laura, who is also packing up and making the move to Washington to be with Peatling next year.

Munro rolls up sleeves for superb soccer

By JARROD POTTER CREATING a high-calibre culture for women’s south-east soccer enticed Stuart Munro across to Southern United.

The former Glasgow Rangers champion has been a south-eastern men’s soccer fixture for the last two decades, but decided to join the startup club on the coast.

He’ll become the inaugural senior coach for Southern United ahead of the maiden Women’s National Premier League Victoria season.

The club - formed by a five-club consortium of Casey Comets, Seaford, Mornington, Langwarrin and Peninsula Strikers - put the feelers out for a new coach and immediately snatched up Munro once he showed interest.

After relinquishing his senior coaching role at Dandenong Thunder at the end of the season, Munro thought the opportunity to cultivate the south-east’s female soccer talent was a new challenge worth pursuing.

“I started thinking about the women’s game more than a year ago.

“I just felt there were a lot of positives and sensed the FFA was pushing the women’s game and it was going to become more popular.

“When this came up a couple of months ago, because it’s a brand new club and a brand new competition and the club was based in the Peninsula area where I live, I felt it was going to be a really good fit for me and really quite interested in.”

Munro did his homework on the new club, and everything about the WNPL consortium impresses him as he looks ahead to senior recruiting for season one.

“When the club approached me about taking on the role, I did a fair bit of due diligence so that it wouldn’t be just a short term thing,” Munro said.

“Ever since the day I thought this could be really good, I’ve never had a negative thought and everything I thought about has been positive.

“The very thought to build something from basically nothing is exciting - we don’t even know where we are going to play from - all those things are quite exciting and you get to put your blueprint on it straight away.”

Munro wants to concentrate on development in year one - success of

“I want to concentrate on developing the southern girls and giving them a pathway to come through and hopefully one day play in the W-League,” Munro said. “We also want to be a competitive team and have these young girls come and support us - we want them to be proud to come and watch the senior girls as that’s where they’re going to strive to reach.

“We want to create a culture and environment in the club - from the 13s to the seniors - that will make everyone feel part of it.”

Southern United president Theresa Deas - a former Matildas and Casey Comets player - believed Stuart’s signing was a great boon for women’s soccer in the local region.

ALL he needed to do was return a phone call.

Dialling the number set the scene for Dandenong’s Justin Butterfield to start his Victorian Premier Cricket career.

Despite missing the calls from Dandenong legend Warren Ayres, Butterfield, 28, from Narre Warren, eventually rang him back and accepted an opportunity that would shape the next 10 years of his sporting life.

Ayres’ eye at the crease was legendary, but so it seems was his eye for scouting talent, as his repeated recruiting efforts reaped Dandenong another wonderful clubman in Butterfield, who just notched his 100th first XI match on Saturday as a Panther.

“I got a phone call from Ayresy years ago and kept missing his calls and I eventually got in touch with him and he said come down,” Butterfield said. “Dandenong runs an open day each year and I had a bowl down there and he asked me if I’d like to play and it was as simple as that.”

From humble beginnings, working his way up through second and third grades, Butterfield has well and truly cemented his spot as Dandenong’s spearhead in charge of a young attack.

With 168 first grade wickets at an average of 22 since joining the club in 2006/07including 17 already this season - he’s been a force throughout his time at Shepley Oval and isn’t slowing down yet.

“It was bit of a long time coming to be honest - had a few quiet years so I didn’t think I’d get there in the end, but I’m very proud to run out for Dandenong,” Butterfield said.

“We’ve been alright - we had that three year patch where we made back-to-back grand finals and a semi-final before that, so like anything it goes in cycles and we’ve always been there or there abouts, if we’ve missed finals we’ve never been too far away.

“Success - particularly in the first XI - is something that is expected -whenever we’ve missed out it hasn’t been by much, so it’s never been a particularly disappointing season.”

He would know a thing or two about ultimate club cricket success.

Butterfield’s fondest Premier memory isn’t with the ball, but with the bat, as his amazing 32-run partnership with James Pattinson under pressure-filled circumstances in the nail-biting 2010/11 Victorian Premier Cricket finale.

Their final-wicket stand saw off Frankston-Peninsula’s dying efforts to snatch the premiership away from Dandenong, but the bowler’s rearguard 13 off 58 balls ensured the Panthers claimed the pennant.

But it’s not just the premiership that stood out to him, but the people he played with along the way including a plethora of Test cricketers who have called Shepley Oval their club-cricketing home including the Pattinsons - Darren and James - and Peter Siddle.

“That’s obviously the highlight of the career (the premiership) and playing with those sorts of people, Darren, James and Pete; it’s been great to have on-field success and be around blokes who have been at the top level,” Butterfield said.

“It’s always a thrill when they’re down at training and you have a chat to them and then go out and play.”

Dandenong coach Ross Woodall said Butterfield’s perennial efforts throughout the years though - sticking by the Panthers through lean years after the club’s premiership success in 2010/11 - was a testament to his character.

“He’s the heart and soul of the place and it’s really important for us to perform well in his 100th,” Woodall said.

“He’s done a hell of a lot for the club and the blokes out here today, so it’s about time we repay the favour.”

Butterfield charged in for his 100th Victorian Premier Cricket match and toiled on Saturday to take 2/56 as the Panthers will need to work hard to chase down Carlton’s 339.

Chasing Carlton’s (339 and 1/20) mammoth first-innings tally, the Dandenong approach was well measured and cautious through the first hour, but was thrown out the window as they lost seven wickets quickly following the break.

Skipper Tom Donnell (90no) and Brett Forsyth (43) saw the shine off the new ball and the pair’s caution paid off initially as they raced to their second 100-run stand this season.

There was extra celebration along the way for Donnell, who surpassed Tim Hooper as Dandenong’s greatest run-scorer in his exceptional innings.

Ryan Sidebottom (2/56) and Cameron Stevenson (3/35) started to chip away at the top order before a chaos-ball spell from Thomas Smyth (5/11) ripped chunks from the Panthers’ order.

Losing 10 wickets for 72 runs in lightning fast procession, Dandenong could not give Donnell the help needed to stay at the crease, with the captain the only man left standing.

His impressive effort to carry-the-bat, finishing 10 shy of a well deserved century, was the only positive to glean from Sunday as the Panthers’ middle

DYNA Double One upstaged illustrious kennel mate Fernando Bale in what will long be remembered as one of the great TAB Melbourne Cups.

Seeking an unprecedented ninth Group 1 title in what was widely touted to be his final start, Fernando Bale stunned everyone when for the first time since July, he missed the start and was slowly away from the boxes.

However he soon showed his trademark dazzling turn of foot, and with a huge roar from the crowd, charged through the first turn four-wide before crossing the field and leading by three lengths entering the back straight.

Dyna Double One had similarly began only fairly before railing strongly through the first turn and setting off in pursuit of his more fancied kennel mate, setting up the race that greyhound fans everywhere had longed to see.

With their rivals left behind, the race became a match race between two of the greats of the modern era. Dyna Double One closed in on Fernando Bale turning for home only for the champ to respond and in a thrilling run to the line, Dyna Double One finally nabbed his rival to land the world’s richest greyhound race by a neck in a new race record of 29.17.

“I’ve always said that Double One will show what he’s capable of one day and he did it in the biggest race in the country,” Andrea Dailly said.

“The effort he put in was just sensational. He ran his race upside down, and to only be beaten a neck by Dyna Double One with him just three lengths off him down the back is just phenomenal. At box rise I thought ‘he can’t win the race’, but within a twinkling of an eye he was in front.

“From where he was, I’d have thought Dyna Double One would have beaten him by a couple of lengths but Fernando’s will to win is enormous

and he just keeps on trying.”

Wheeler confirmed that had Fernando Bale won, he would have been immediately retired.

However during the post-race presentation, declared that Fernando Bale will continue racing indefinitely.

Dyna Double One’s Melbourne Cup victory was the 22nd win in his 41 start career, and the $420,000 first prize lifted his prize money to $698,148. By finishing second, Fernando Bale picked up a further $120,000 and now boasts $1,288,110 in prize money.

Renault captures attention RENAULT Captur is a stylish city car that’s virtually a Renault Clio with a taller five-door hatch body.

It joins a sudden rash of small crossover SUVs that are taking Australia by storm.

In fact these vehicles are a hit in global markets, particularly in Europe where parking in increasingly crowded cities is a huge problem.

Note the word styling in our opening to this story, because that’s the number one reason people are giving us when we talk about their buying a Renault Captur.

Interestingly, favourable responses are coming to us not only from youngsters who appreciate French style, but also from the over 60s who appreciate the ease of entry and exit from taller cars.

While relatively small on the outside, Renault Captur has space for four adults in comfort.

Mum and dad in the front and three pre-teen kids in the back is likely to be the typical Australian set-up and works well in this tall hatch.

Versatility is excellent as the rear seat slides back and forwards to let you choose between passenger and luggage space.

Headroom is plentiful for all but the tallest of basketball players.

Captur is sold in the usual Renault models of Expression and Dynamique, the recommended retail price begins at a pretty reasonable $22,990.

The kick up in the window line at the rear works well in the way it joins the roof-mounted rear spoiler.

Also appealing are the deeply sculpted lines of the lower part of the doors.

Captur has a multimedia system controlled through a seven-inch tablet-type screen accessing satellite navigation, radio, phone and networking for apps grouped.

Audio sounds good without being outstanding.

USB, Bluetooth and Aux make connectivity easy.

Renault Captur is powered by either a 0.9-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine producing 62 kW, or a 1.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol with 88 kW.

The power number translatesinto 90 and 120 horsepower, hence the Captur models being labelled TCe 90 and TCe 120 The Captur TCe 90 comes only with a fivespeed manual gearbox, all TCe 120 models drive through a six-speed double-clutch automatic.

Our test car on this occasion was a Captur TCe 120. It came in a latte coloured lower body and deep black roof.

The interior disappoints in being finished in various shades of grey, though the white stitching on the dark-grey seats does lift it a little, and there are some chromed highlights.

Renault was the first car maker ever to achieve a five-star safety rating and Captur obviously continues this important tradition.

It only requires six airbags to achieve this, avoiding the extra knee bags some makers are

forced to include. Child safety utilises IsoFix child seat anchorage at the two outboard rear seats Seat comfort and support are good in the traditional French manner - those who live in that country certainly like to pamper themselves.

The luggage area is tall and voluminous.

The floor of the boot is reversible to give either conventional carpet or a wash-down surface for carrying wet items.

The boot floor can be set to give maximum height, or raised by about 150mm to provide a hidden area underneath it.

A particularly useful feature is that the boot floor can be set at a 45 degree angle that gives support to grocery bags which insist on falling over and spreading their contents far and wide.

Around town the Captur is quiet, comfortable and pleasant to ride in.

On motorways it shifts along in a relaxed easygoing manner.

However, it doesn’t like Australian country roads that are badly in need of repairs and moves about more on its suspension than we liked.

Handling is safe and competent, but nothing to get excited about, that’s the job of Captur’s little brother Clio which comes in both standard and exciting sports models.

Engine performance from the four-cylinder turbo-petrol unit is good and generally gets the car moving promptly.

The six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is generally in the right gear for the conditions and works well with the characteristics of the turbo engine.
