New City chief executive Kelvin Spiller said the latest tweet would be “raised“ with Cr Farrell and the mayor.

The Twitter spat followed an extensive investigation into bullying at City of Greater Geelong.

Former Australian Human Rights Commissioner Susan Halliday’s report said bullying issues were uncovered within City Hall, involving both staff and councillors.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Bus stops are under construction on Geelong’s new routes despite a promised review of controversial timetables.

Liberal South Barwon MP Andrew Katos said the timetable and route changes introduced in June had raised the ire of many public transport users.

Mr Katos and upper house MP Simon Ramsay hosted two forums earlier this year to hear concerns over the new routes.

Mr Katos raised the issue with Transport Minister Jacinta Allan in Parliament on behalf of a Highton couple this week.

“Mr and Mrs Patterson have previously written to the minister submitting concerns about recent changes to certain Geelong bus routes, in

particular the replacement of the No. 16 bus.

“The minister responded to the Pattersons, advising that a review of the bus routes and associated services will be undertaken early in the New Year, six months after the introduction of the changes.

“However, permanent infrastructure is being installed along the new route 43, being the construction of concrete pads in readiness for bus shelters in Mt Pleasant Road, Highton, even though a review is taking place and this infrastructure may not be required.

“I ask the minister: is the review of bus routes in Highton genuine given the fact that new bus infrastructure is already being installed?”

Mr Katos told the Indy that spending money on new bus stops meant the review was a sham.

“It looks like they’ve already made up their

mind despite the review,” Mr Katos said.

“Either that or it’s a waste of money if the review finds that the route should be changed.”

Ms Allan’s spokesperson said bus routes in the area were under review.

“The infrastructure being installed is required for passengers currently using route 43,” the spokesperson said.

“We’re improving local bus infrastructure now and will continue to talk to the community about how their local bus services can be improved in the future.

“As Mt Pleasant Road is the most direct route into the area and a major thoroughfare in Highton, it’s very unlikely that it would not be a route for local buses in the future.”

Bomb squad officers have investigated an “unknown object” under a burnt-out van at Grovedale.

Victoria Police said officers ordered Birrilee Court residents to stay indoors before declaring the area safe late yesterday morning.

$20m proposal A $20 million apartment complex could replace an industrial site at the entry to Portarlington if a developer wins his rezoning application.

Bill Votsaris’s four-storey Bella proposal was tabled at a council meeting this week, proposing 55 apartments as well as shops and offices on the Geelong Road land.

Trees plan Tens of thousands of trees will spread a “green canopy” across suburban Geelong under a council planting program.

Councillors endorsed the Urban Forest Strategy this week, with plans to add 45,000 trees to suburbs including Norlane, Corio and Whittington.

Jobs boost Over $11 million in government grants to assist expansion projects at several Geelong businesses will create 145 jobs, two ministers have announced.

Federal Industry Minister Christopher Pyne and state counterpart Lily D’Ambrosio said the funding would boost investment across the region by $44 million.

Health service facing more anger Bellarine Community Health (BCH) has faced further anger at a second community forum in Ocean Grove as it also opened community consultation on a multi-million dollar master plan for its Point Lonsdale facility.

The forums were held after a recent Department of Health and Human Services review ordered BCH to develop a service plan for the Bellarine Peninsula and implement a comprehensive engagement strategy including a community advisory committee.

The review followed community objections to the sale of residential aged care service Ann Nichol House and the closure of Coorabin House.

“The aim of these public forums has been to help the community understand the review

findings as well as give people an opportunity to voice their concerns,” said board chair Hazel Ingram.

“We have publicly acknowledged that our engagement with the community over the decision to sell our aged care facilities was inadequate.

“We hope these forums have shown our commitment to actioning the improvements identified in the review.

“At both our community forums we’ve discussed how this new committee is a chance for the community to get involved, have a say and provide future recommendations to the board.”

BCH proposes to replace its Point Lonsdale facilities with a new $7 million health centre.

The project includes 66 double-storey inde-

pendent living townhouses, an underground car park, a lap pool, a cafe, a hairdresser and a function room.

Private investment would foot the bill of $35 million to $40 million.

BCH chief John Fendyk said the proposal ensured modern facilities for the next 20 years without the need for further upgrades.

“Building alongside the existing medical centre is likely to be a slower, more expensive and potentially disruptive exercise,” Mr Fendyk said.

“Building on a new site would allow minimal disruption to services, minimise the risk to patient safety and allow for a smooth transition.”

Town hall talk ‘to empower heroes’

Study into sex and disability A Geelong researcher is looking for adults with a disability who are willing to speak about their sex lives.

The unique study by Deakin University’s School of Health and Social Development is trying to better understand the need for facilitated sex support for adults with disability.

Lead researcher Dr Russell Shuttleworth said the need for facilitated sex support was often ignored by disability services and policy makers.

“Some people with disability may need assistance from their paid carers or support workers in order to express themselves sexually or participate in sexual activities. This is called facilitated sex,” Dr Shuttleworth explained.

“Our research will be the first in a series of studies culminating in national research, which will provide the framework for policy and practice guidelines.”

Researchers want to interview 20 Victorian adults with physical disabilities who use support workers and ask them about the kind of assistance that they need, such as help to prepare for sexual activity, to have sex with a partner or to masturbate.

They will also investigate the barriers to negotiating facilitated sex and the ethical concerns that people with disability have with their reliance on support workers to assist with sexual expression.

The ground breaking nature of this research cannot be understated, according to co-researcher Dr George Taleporos.

“As a disability rights advocate and sex researcher, I know that this topic has been ignored for far too long and it’s time that government and service providers recognise the sexual needs of people with disability and develop informed policy and practice in this area,” Dr Taleporos said.

Ward ‘ambassadors’ on long march Residents will march under ward flags on Geelong’s 80km “extreme arts journey of discovery”, City Hall has announced.

The “flag ambassadors” will be the vanguard of the M~M2016 walk over two days in May. The ambassadors will begin their walk at the You Yangs, cross Geelong’s industrial heartland at night and arrive in the city centre in time for a Geelong After Dark arts event.

At dawn the next day they will follow the Bar-

won River to reach its mouth at Barwon Heads by sunset.

City Hall said route stages would vary from 3km to 14km, with the “several ambassadors” allowed to share the flag-carrying role.

Ambassadors could be nominated for significant contributions to their municipality or neighbourhood, the City said.

A Hero Round Table conference to inspire everyday courageous acts will take place in Geelong, the hometown of its creator.

Matt Langdon has had a focus on empowering children since his days working in American school camp programs.

For the past 10 years he has hosted events with guest speakers sharing stories about heroism.

He has also worked with renowned psychologist Dr Phil Zimbardo who conducted the famous 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment.

Saturday’s conference at Geelong West Town Hall will start at 10.30am on Saturday at Geelong West Town Hall with speakers at 12-minute intervals until 6pm.

Attendees will then have opportunities to share their own stories of heroic acts.

They will also have Matt Langdon options for one-onone time with the speakers.

The speakers include psychologists, authors, social activists and entrepreneurs from across local, national and international spheres.

Geelong Grammar’s John Hendry will talk about the bystander effect, the founder of One Girl will speak on how people can be “heroes from a distance” and Dr Zimbardo will explain how to empower heroes.

Hero Town Geelong president Sylvia Gray said the event could help empower people with confidence to overcome bullying at work or school.

“I encourage those who are curious to come along. It’s an opportunity to share feel-good stories,” she said.

“While the project’s initial focus was on empowering kids, this event is for everyone of all ages.

As the train rolled toward a stop the conductor came thundering down the aisle to hammer on the drivers’ door. After a brief briefing, the conductor re-emerged and the train picked up speed again.

Obviously the drivers had somehow mixed up their timetables - despite their seniority.

Our commuter encountered the drivers when the three alighted at Spencer Street.

“Did you forget the train doesn’t stop at Wyndham?” he inquired cheekily.

“Oh no, we thought there was something on the track,” came the response, with an equally cheeky grin.

Which didn’t explain the conductor’s role in the incident at all.

It’s pretty difficult to get lost on a railroad track but two drivers apparently came close yesterday morning on the Geelong-Melbourne line.

A controversial Geelong zombie video confounded its critics by winning a silver gong at a Victorian Tourism Awards this week.

The video, featuring Mayor Darryn Lyons as an agent of change banishing zombie hordes from ’Sleepy Hollow’, won the Destination Marketing category.

Geelong and Bellarine Tourism chief Roger Grant welcomed the award as recognition for his organisation’s Geelong Reinvented campaign, which includes the video.

“We always knew it was going to be controversial. In fact, it was designed to be so but it got people talking,” Mr Grant said.

“The mayor’s section generated national and international coverage, which we would never have received if not for that.

“We shook the cage, we received outrage, real and mock, we went through the whole drama with it but if you aren’t brave enough to do something different then nothing changes.

“It’s an industry award that recognises excellence and rewards braveness and creativity.”

The video sparked criticism after its official release at a cinema a year ago. A Geelong newspaper editorial described the

Given the police crackdown on using mobile devices while driving, a particular Facebook page is not recommended for motorists.

Called Geelong Police Sightings, it seeks to alert users to the latest spots where the police (and presumably the radar operators) have set up shop.

At least the site has an amusing motif, a variation on the Warner Brothers movie logo.

Mr Grant said the $30,000 campaign achieved similar “connectivity” to similar campaigns costing millions of dollars.

“Our post-campaign assessments demonstrated people had moved positively and we’re proud to have played a part in changing perceptions of Geelong.

“The idea of Geelong reinvented with its youthful energy and constant change is what the messages were.”

Searoad Ferries won a Major Tour and Transport Operators award for the third year in a row, placing it in the tourism hall of fame.

Searoad Ferries chief Matt McDonald also won a Young Achievers Award.

Queenscliff ’s Beacon Big 4 Resort won in a caravan and holiday parks category, while RACV Torquay Resort grabbed silver for Luxury Accommodation.

Call to check city’s mental health

By ALANA MITCHELSON Geelong should become Australia’s first “mentally healthy city”, former premier Jeff Kennett told the Indy yesterday.

He intended to approach State Government, WorkSafe and Victorian Chamber of Commerce with a proposition to run a mental health audit of all Geelong businesses.

The audit would investigate what they were doing about creating mentally healthy workplaces, he said.

Mr Kennett said six months ago he challenged a number of Geelong businesses to initiate mental health pro-

grams for employees.

Now he wanted to know the results through an audit.

Mr Kennett, the chairman of national depression initiative beyondblue, said he had “great interest” in Geelong.

“I have a long attachment to Geelong. Whether it’s a council, hospital or contracting business of five people, programs should be in place to ensure people are happy in the workplace.

“Employees will feel better when issues are resolved and they will be more productive in the workplace, delivering better results than those less happy.

“It’s going to take time but I think it’s

worthwhile working towards.”

Mr Kennett said website Heads Up was a good starting point for businesses wanting to act on workplace mental health.

Harwood Andrews Lawyers’ Stephanie Beard said communication at the firm had improved since it began using Heads Up. “We wanted to create a positive culture where people feel safe to come to work and can talk about mental health issues in the workplace, where people feel supported and included,” Ms Beard said.

“I looked at the Take Action tab on

the Heads Up program online, which helped identify priorities. It allowed me to identify the gaps.

“It was also good to identify what we were already doing.”

Ms Beard said Harwood Andrews had also implemented a reward and recognition program for staff to nominate colleagues exceeding expectations for a gift voucher.

Research shows that one in five employees are likely to experience a mental health issue at any given time.

Untreated depression costs six million lost working days in Australia annually.

Relocation to park for starving cape koalas after outcry over Otway culling rating koalas from the group.

“After extensive habitat-mapping and koala-modelling, it was determined that Great Otway National Park was the only site in the western part of Victoria suitable and large enough to support this project.”

Ms Watson said the park had several species of eucalypts suitable as koalas’ food.

Only healthy animals would be relocated, including “fertility-controlled” with hormone implants females weighing over 1kg.

Ms Watson said the operation aimed to prevent koalas suffering from malnutrition and starvation from their “over-abundance” compared to the amount of available manna gums at Cape Otway.

Cape Otway had about 1000 koalas left, the department said.

Australian Koala Foundation accused the State Government in October of an “embarrassing gaffe” that led to the culling of Cape Otway koalas. The koalas began starving after the government planted two wrong species of gums at the cape, the foundation said.

By ALANA MITCHELSON Up to 400 koalas will be relocated from Cape Otway before the end of the year to relieve “overpopulation” pressures.

The operation has so far captured at least 81 koalas, with the healthiest 46 relocated to national parkland north of Lorne, about a half-hour drive from Cape Otway.

The relocation program follows an outcry over State Government culling of the cape’s koalas which were struggling with a shortage of suitable food.

Many of the animals were now in bad health, said Mandy Watson, a senior biodiversity officer with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).

“Their general health is OK but it’s deteriorating. Relocation can put some stress on the animals so we’ve only been relocating the healthiest koalas,” Ms Watson said.

Graveyard tower dead, not buried

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A proposal to erect a Telstra phone tower at Western Cemetery has been knocked back on heritage grounds.

This week a council planning meeting decided the phone tower would have “an unacceptable impact” on the cemetery’s heritage values “as a result of its visual impact”.

But the proposal could yet win approval, with the proponent able to appeal at the state’s planning tribunal.

The panel of councillors decided the proposed tower was not sited or designed to be sensitive to the cemetery.

“The telecommunications facility will have an unreasonable visual impact on the surrounding area when viewed from private and public land,” the panel decided.

Help Herne Hill group’s Jonathan Connor said the meeting had been “emotionally charged”.

Passionate residents and people with family buried in the cemetery had made impassioned objections to the plan, Mr Connor said.

Representatives from the National Trust, Holy Spirit Primary School, Rix Street Kindergarten and the Wathaurong community were present, he said.

The Indy reported in September that residents planned to topple the tower application after the Geelong Cemeteries Trust signed an agreement with Telstra to lease a section of the cemetery to install a 37.5m pole at the rear of the graveyard.

Western Cemetery houses the remains of Willem Baa Niip, also known as King Billy, the head of the Barrabool tribe, who defended his right to live on the land of his people, the Wathaurong.

Mr Connor said the tower would have overshadowed local residents, grave sites and recreational areas.

“Residents claimed that not enough people had been informed of the application,” Mr Connor said.

“The community stated that a location such as the Western Cemetery could not be seen as anything but intrusive.

Mr Connor said residents wanted the council to negotiate with Telstra to find an alternative location away from Herne Hill.

The applicant now has 60 days to lodge an appeal with the Victorian Civil and Administration Tribunal.

Part of an inaugural Act on Climate Festival, the market will feature exhibitors showcasing the latest sustainable-living solutions on Geelong’s waterfront from 10am to 2pm on Saturday.

The organisers hope to draw on the success of last year’s People’s Climate March, which they said attracted 900 people to the waterfront.

Council environment and sustainability portfolio-holder Andy Richards said the market would be a “one-stop shop for individual environmental sustainability”.

Cam takes a punt in USA Another Geelong footballer is in line to win a prestigious American college football award.

Former St Joseph’s player Cameron Johnston hopes to follow in the boot-steps of fellow Aussie Rules player Tom Hornsey.

Hornsey won a prestigious Ray Guy Award as the top punter in US college football last year and Johnston has been cited as one of 10 semi-finalists for the award this season.

The Ohio State junior punter ranks among the top 10 punters in the nation, leading the Big Ten Conference with his 44.9-yard average.

An announcement from Ohio State said Johnston was a key weapon in the team’s success so far this season.

“He continues to swing field position toward the undefeated Buckeyes’ favour on a weekly basis,” the announcement said.

“Johnston was named the Big Ten Conference special team’s player of the week after he averaged 51.5 yards on his four punts versus Western Michigan, including a season-long 67-yarder.”

Johnston’s success revolves around his ability to punt the ball close to the opponent’s goal line, making it significantly more difficult for opponents.

Johnston has 74 punts downed inside the 20 yard line and is certain to break the school record of 78.

The semi-finalists, chosen from a field of 79 candidates, were evaluated on their overall statistics and contribution to the team.

Particular emphasis was placed on the punter’s net average, percentage of total punts inside the 20-yard line and percentage of punts not returned.

A national voting body of Football Bowl Subdivision coaches, sports information directors, national media and former Ray Guy Award winners will select three finalists.

Voters will then cast a second round of ballots to decide on the winner.

The presentation of the Ray Guy Award will be featured on the College Football Awards live on 10 December on cable sports channel ESPN.

More crashes on roads ‘fix’ Another crash has prompted a warning about a series of rebuilt intersections on the Princes Highway west of Geelong.

Motorists should “use caution” when approaching the highway from the new wide-median intersections at Cape Otway, Devon and Hendy Main roads, said VicRoads and Victoria Police.

“This follows another crash this week at the intersection with Devon Road,” they said in a joint statement this week.

“The new intersections are designed to give highway drivers the priority so that those approaching the Princes Highway from the side roads need to give way.”

Roads said the new intersections were designed in accordance with “current standards” and had undergone a roadsafety audit.

“I’m concerned about the number of crashes that have occurred recently at these intersections and our priority is to understand why these accidents are happening,” Mr Price said.

“We are, however, listening to concerns raised by members of the community and have taken immediate action to try to make these intersections safer.”

Mr Price said the action included “variable message boards” and reduced speed limits on approaches to the intersections.

“These measures are temporary while we investigate a more permanent treatment in consultation with Victoria Police and an independent road-safety auditor. I ask all road users to slow down as they approach the Princes Highway from any intersecting road.”

A police officer said earlier this year, following a spate of accidents, that some motorists were treating the intersections as roundabouts.

An Australian Defence Force inquiry into a trespass incident involving peace activists at Swan Island has recommended changes to procedures to avoid adverse publicity.

Four activists who attended an annual Swan Island Peace Convergence protest last year claimed they were hooded, had clothes removed with knives, were cuffed with cable ties, assaulted and threatened with anal rape with a stick and drowning when they were captured by soldiers.

The privately conducted inquiry’s partly redacted report exonerated three soldiers involved in the arrest of the activists.

“However, the blindfolding of arrested persons and the removal of clothing by members of the SIAD, while justifiable in the circumstances, has the potential to provide uninformed comment and criticism to be levelled at Defence,” the report said.

“Regardless of the appropriateness of any response to the incursion of the Swan Island Training Facility perimeter, a perception may exist that the response from ADF members was ‘heavy handed’.”

The report said standard operating procedures should be changed to “mitigate against adverse publicity risks”.

The inquiry found that on the balance of probabilities, the allegations of mistreatment made by the activists were unsubstantiated.

The report said two of the four arrested activists fled when soldiers approached the group, with a search taking an hour to locate them.

It confirmed that soldiers were only alerted to the trespassing activists because one soldier was listening to radio station 3AW and heard an interview with one of the trespassers.

The report said procedures regarding powers of search needed to be tightened because it left soldiers and the Department of Defence exposed to possible litigation.

One of the activists, Greg Rolles, said the report was another example in a long history of the ADF’s inability to investigate itself with impartiality.

“The report contains contradictions, misrepresentations, and outright falsehoods,” Mr Rolles said.

“Contrary to claims in the report, none of the protesters displayed any resistance, physical or otherwise.

“We are trained and prepared for rough handling and arrest.”

Mr Rolles said Victoria Police arrested four other protesters without mistreatment.

“Since there was no difference in the circumstances, appearance, behaviour or demeanour between the two groups, it is clear the only difference was the overreaction of ADF members.”

Mr Rolles said three of the activists were pursuing legal action against the ADF members for assault and battery.

Emojis ‘cleaning up mall’

City to get smart at $55m factory

Emojis are helping turn Geelong’s beleaguered Lt Malop Street Mall into a “Can Do Zone”, City Hall has announced.

The smiley-face images are part of an arsenal including “innovative posters, rubbish bin wraps, postcards and social media” to encourage “more-publicly-acceptable behaviour” in the mall.

The job of the emojis, commonly attached to mobile-phone and email messages, was to “deliver a positive message to the youthful users of the mall”, City Hall said.

The Can Do Zone is part of council’s #SoYouKnowGeelong campaign, which Mayor Darryn Lyons officially launched last Friday.

“Our mall has taken many hits over the years and we’re determined to improve the way the community uses and enjoys this space,” Cr Lyons said.

“The mall is now a Can Do Zone; a place where people can come together and can show respect, where they can smile and can say hello.

“The #SoYouKnowGeelong initiative is focused on engaging young people, other mall users and local traders to promote socially appropriate behaviour for the shared use of the space.

A new smart-fibre factory and an engineering training facility will enhance Geelong’s credibility for innovative manufacturing, according to proponents.

The twin facilities, both at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus, would also enhance the prospect of partnerships between researchers and industry, they said.

A joint venture between Geelong-based biotechnology company Cytomatrix and Swiss high-tech textiles company HeiQ Materials has received a $1.2 million government grant to establish the industrial-scale manufacturing facility.

HeiQ Australia will manufacture short polymer fibre (SPF) materials for the global performance additives market, including textiles, coatings, electronics, cosmetics and medical devices.

The award-winning process to develop the short-fibre materials was pioneered at Deakin University’s Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM).

HeiQ Australia chief executive officer Dr Murray Height said the venture aimed to build a manufacturing capability for the industrial production of high-value short-fibre materials for the domestic and export markets.

“HeiQ Australia will scale up and industrialise the process developed by Cytomatrix and the Institute of Frontier Materials and School of Engineering team, and will actively position novel short fibre materials in the global market for highperformance additive materials,” Dr Height said.

Deakin’s $55 million Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering Training (CADET) was launched this week to give regional and rural students greater opportunities to develop a career in engineering.

Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said the co-location of CADET with Carbon Revolution and HeiQ would create further partnerships between researchers and industry.

Federal Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham said the Australian Government had committed $21.5 million to the centre.

The cartoon face of the revitalised Life Be In It campaign visited last week to promote the benefits of an active lifestyle.

Norm joined Life Be In It director general Dr Colin Benjamin to address Grovedale Marshall Probus Club members about the campaign’s plan for Geelong.

Life Be In It was “teaming up” with councils and communities around Australia to “mobilise” residents into using local parks and recreation reserves, Dr Benjamin said.

The organisation was working with City Hall and the region’s councils alliance body G21 to get the message across, he told the Probus members.

“We aim to get the City of Greater Geelong and the G21 communities to join in this program to become the Nation’s Healthiest City by 2020 and (for) Australia to be on the road to becoming The World’s Healthiest Nation.”

Dr Benjamin said Life Be In It would work with the region’s five mayors to launch a JobsNOW program to fight chronic disease.

The connection between employment and physical activity was that “having a job keeps us off the couch”, he said.

“We can cut the potential cost of ill-health by more than $3 billion a year (nationally) and have everyone enjoying a longer and more satisfying life in their own homes, cutting the number of sickies through worthwhile work and being able to be active volunteers and members of organisations like Probus.”

Launched in 1975, Life Be In It featured Norm as a lazy cartoon Aussie in a series of advertising campaigns.

The campaign eventually faded from prominence but has resumed with a renewed emphasis on obesity and the health risks of sitting for long periods.

State carving up our region again

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong’s boundaries for state programs have changed again with a new “regional statement”.

The State Government document was a new vision for Victoria’s regions that would “change the way government works with the Barwon region”, Premier Daniel Andrews said.

The Government had established nine new Regional Partnerships across the state, with representatives from community, business and all three levels of government, he said.

The new Barwon Region encompasses Geelong with Borough of Queenscliffe and ColacOtway and Surf Coast shires.

Geelong has previously been incorporated into various governmental regions, some stretching as far as Portland, for issues ranging from waste management and health services to tourism and education.

Mr Andrews said the Barwon regional partnership would ensure government decisions and investments reflected the priorities of the families, workers and businesses in the region.

“The statement outlines the Labor Government’s significant commitments and investments for regional Victorians and highlights the opportunities and challenges for the Barwon region.”

Mr Andrews said challenges facing the region included employment, with 150 new jobs at the DisabilityCare national headquarters, and the impact on jobless ranks from closures such as Alcoa

and Ford.

Supporting advanced manufacturing and tackling disadvantage at Corio and Norlane were also challenges.

Mr Andrews said the statement also outlined a number of new initiatives for the region.

He cited a $34 million Regional Skills and Training package to help people into new jobs and improving reception for mobile devices on the Geelong rail line.

Mr Andrews also announced a Regional Business Centre, which would provide a one-stopshop for businesses.

“We’re putting government back to work for the Barwon region with a commitment to create jobs, provide a better start for young people and ensure a brighter future for families and communities,” he said.

But South Barwon Liberal MP Andrew Katos said the statement was “all spin and no substance”.

“Daniel Andrews has simply re-announced plans and passed them off as additional projects or funding,” Mr Katos said.

“It’s taken the government 12 months to come up with a glossy book - and most of the book is taken up by photos.

“There’s no new funding for the Geelong region. The only change is that Barwon is now separated from the old Barwon south-west region.

“Some of these announcements were made under the previous Liberal Government and they are palming them off as their own.”

A tiny flowerpot man has won a top industry award for the Geelong Indy.

Reg Ryan’s picture, above, of Daniel McDonnell on his giant sculpture won a Best Photographic Study award at Friday’s annual Victorian Country Press Association (VCPA) conference.

“Reg has sized up the opportunity and chosen this interesting angle to produce an eye-popping photograph,” said the judges.

They also highly commended Ryan for a “superb action photo” from Easter’s professional surfing titles at Bells Beach.

Terrorist attacks in Paris have shocked and saddened Geelong’s French community, according to a representative.

Alliance Française de Geelong president Najat Baqtatouche said local support, including Mayor Darryn Lyons’ speech at a vigil earlier this week and a phone call from Diversitat chief Michael Martinez, had touched local Frech expatriates.

“In recent years the number of French people in Geelong has increased noticeably and many of them responded to a spontaneous call over the weekend by the former president of the Alliance Française, Fabrice Pilon, to hold a candlelight vigil in Johnstone Park on Tuesday evening,“ Ms Baqtatouche said.

Geelong Frenchwoman Marjorie Pascal-Pretre spoke at the vigil about the young ages of most of the 129 dead and over 300 injured in Paris victims.

She urged the crowd to also think of terrorism victims elsewhere in the world.

Some vigil patrons shared a drink together at a cafe afterward to honour the victims and celebrate French conviviality and joie de vivre.

Dan Cowdell (Letters, 13 November) ignored the fact that when the 78 per cent of CSIRO survey respondents who believed in climate change were asked why it was happening, the figure for those who believed it was man-made reduced to 45.9 per cent.

The debate between warmists and sceptics rests on the cause of change - human or Mother Nature not on the change itself.

For 38.6 per cent of the respondents, cyclical climate change has been here since the planet began, which is one reason to research natural causes before blaming humans.

For example, which is more likely: the 20th Century rise in temperature of .6C was a gentle recovery from the Little Ice Age, which ended in mid-19th Century, or a catastrophic result of humans’ minuscule carbon dioxide contribution? Time will tell.

Also 7.9 per cent didn’t believe in climate change, anyway.

They could be right; perhaps we’re having a normal variation in the weather pattern. After all, climate is a long-range term impossible to identify in any person’s lifetime.

So the 38.6 per cent and the 7.9 per cent add up to a nice 46.5 per cent of dissenters to pip the 45.9 per cent of warmists at the post.

These were the words of Ronda Rousey that she wrote in her book explaining how she dealt with an ex-partner. They clearly show she is a perpetrator of domestic violence.

If a man had done this there would have been an outcry but because this violence was perpetrated by a woman nobody raised an eyebrow.

This was another instance that highlighted the double standards around domestic violence and why people have been led to believe it’s a male-only issue.

Statistics are cherry-picked to keep society thinking it is a “gendered issue”, which creates division between the genders when a unified approach is needed to curb domestic violence.

With males at least 25 per cent of victims, we simply cannot ignore the fact that women can also be violent in domestic situations.

Perpetrators of these acts must be brought to justice, regardless of their gender, and support needs to be available for all victims of domestic violence.

Domestic violence does not discriminate and it’s time men were also recognised as worthy of receiving support to heal and recover.

Buckley residents and the wider city still face unacceptably high levels of illiteracy in our community. Public libraries are the great equalisers in providing equitable access to people from all walks of life and backgrounds.

On Saturday the doors to Geelong Library & Heritage Centre, ‘The Dome’, will open. This impressive and thoughtfully designed building has positively and irrevocably changed Geelong’s architectural landscape and is set to do the same for community learning and culture in the 21st Century.

The Dome is the result of a bold, unwavering vision and represents the culmination of many years of lobbying, planning and collaborative effort.

A climate of confusion In his commentary on our Geelong Act on Climate Festival, Thomas Watson (Letters, 13 October) accused the CSIRO of deception on global warming.

Is that what he believes? That our scientific bodies are part of a giant cover up?

If anyone has relied on the media for their information on climate change then their confusion is totally understandable.

This weekend is their chance to come and talk to ordinary people at the festival about why they are concerned about climate change.

More exciting is what we can do to tap into world-changing solutions that are beating a path to our door.

The festival has risen from the grass roots of ordinary people concerned for our children’s future.

All are welcome.

It’s a chance for some dialogue and we want to hear what others think, too.

BOWLED OVER: A delay in moving to new synthetic greens at Geelong Golf Club is frustrating local bowlers, according to a player.

City strands bowlers I write about City Of Greater Geelong’s combining of Geelong West and Drumcondra lawn bowls clubs earlier this year.

A problem involving the City’s transfer of the bowlers to Geelong Golf Club is costing their newly formed City of Geelong Bowls Club about $600 a week to use the former Drumcondra club’s site in the meantime.

The new club is consequently being ridiculed for its inability to accommodate seven teams and has lost members, who also face a shortage of parking from the doubled membership.

My membership card is number 151 but parking is available for about 30, which includes private street parking. The City gets revenue from incorrectly parked vehicles.

This situation is unsuitable for any club membership in 2015.

We were promised we would be in our new club facility at Geelong Golf Club last February with five synthetic greens. There has been no progress at the new site, other than the ninth green being moved.

To cap it all off, on Saturday I received a phone call at 10am to say the game had been called off because six members had pulled out. All active members would have considered this disgraceful.

The newly formed club has serious problems, which seem to stem from the City’s inaction on its commitment.

Will the leaders of Islam teach that these suicide bombers, dying as martyrs for the cause of Allah, will go straight to hell, not to the joys of the “Garden of Bliss”?

Will they will reject the idea of world domination and accept the right of others, like democratic Israel, to exist peacefully?

There is a root to this tree that determines the nature of its fruit.

Islam needs to find its rational equivalent of Martin Luther to lead it from ignorant Medieval darkness into a democratic world.

Islamic State, the terrorist group, has threatened further acts. I am deeply concerned it might attack the United Nations climate change conference in Paris from 30 November to 11 December.

All the world leaders will be there, including our PM. Let’s hope French intelligence agencies have this sorted out before then.

Feminist butchers meaning I heard a local feminist primary school teacher state on Remembrance Day: “I don’t want my students to celebrate the end of World War I - it’s all about men butchering men”.

We mark Remembrance Day out of deep respect for the young men who answered this nation’s call to arms to defeat an officially governmentdeclared enemy, Kaiser Wilhelm’s Germany and its allies.

Let there be light - and cops If Mayor Darryn Lyons is not enough of a show pony now, his antics in beseeching Police Minister Wade Noonan really hit a high note.

Council once had security men in the mall but pulled them out for a saving, probably vastly greater annually than the $45,000 wanted for security cameras. And as I said last time, it was simply a commercial decision - council wanted to save a buck.

It’s not such a problem to sow plastic green grass around the city as a cosmetic fix but serious attempts to make the mall and CBD safer are just too hard.

I have a couple of suggestions.

Put some cops on the beat at all times, especially those officers whose cars are always parked at Geelong Police Station.

Second, turn on some lights in the CBD, especially on party nights. The city looks bleak, unfriendly and dangerous at night, so turning on or adding some lights would make a vast improvement.

After all, the light bill is paid from ratepayers’ funds, not council’s own hip-pocket.

Enjoying idea of driverless cars The concept of driverless cars is looking more promising as I realise I could have one.

I don’t drive because I think the roads are safer without me.

Driverless cars could be a boon to busy mums who could send the kids to school in one.

They would be great for families with three children at three different schools. The car could do the school run while mum relaxes in the laundry with a nice cold wash cycle.

Driverless vehicles would be a blessing for older people who wouldn’t have the fear of losing their independence with the loss of their drivers licence - and it would be cheaper than maintaining a chauffeur. Grandparents could zip over in their driverless car to babysit or bring forbidden treats to the grandchildren.

Also, a driverless car will stop a lot of arguments when travelling on holidays and end all the bickering about women reading road maps.

And it would be goodbye to annoying GPS voices leading us up the garden path.

Yes, we could soon be driving less and enjoying bit more.

Cancer council thanks relayed Bellarine Relay For Life was held overnight from 7 to 8 November, uniting participants to take steps against cancer and show that hope lives for anyone with a cancer experience.

I thank each member of the Bellarine Peninsula community who relayed, donated, volunteered or supported this moving community experience.

Thanks to this support, this year’s Bellarine Relay For Life is expected to raise over $62,000, which will help ensure Cancer Council Victoria’s support, prevention and research programs continue.

Each year over 140,000 Australians support Cancer Council’s Relay For Life. Around the world, people in 24 countries come together for relays.

I am constantly inspired by the participants, volunteers and their dedication to the cause.

The money raised at Bellarine Relay For Life will help Cancer Council Victoria provide programs including: funding some of Victoria’s brightest researchers and their cutting-edge projects to help detect, treat and beat cancer; important prevention programs like PapScreen Victoria, Quit and SunSmart; support services including a pro-bono legal assistance service to help those affected by cancer; and our information and support line, Cancer Council 13 11 20, on which qualified cancer nurses give people information and support on.

I would encourage residents to make use of the support line service to discuss their cancer-related questions with a registered nurse.

Thanks again to everyone who relayed and helped continue the fight against cancer.

That’s just what the At The Hop 50s revue at the Sphinx Hotel captures, stepping audiences back into the decade of Marilyn Monroe, Little Richard, Doris Day and songs from the Grease soundtrack.

A cast of young up-and-coming performers croon, swoon and buffoon their way through the best of the era’s rock ‘n’ roll tunes in a fabulous all singing, all dancing two set revue.

Backed by cool props and sensational costumes, the collection of songs gives everyone - even those born well past the decade - as true taste of the ’50s.

The interactive show gets in among the audience, with performers leaving the stage and starting impromptu dance competitions and encouraging audiences up out of their seats to join in the fun.

The stars of At The Hop include Elise Brennan, a graduate of the University of Ballarat Arts Academy, who has appeared in Guys and Dolls as Mimi and toured with James Reyne as a backing singer.

Elise played the wife of Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys and had the privilege of working with Geoffrey Rush in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

Ranjeet Starr has performed internationally in numerous tours of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS, playing the roles of Munkustrap and the Rum Tum Tugger.

Celtic rock act The Rumjacks have returned to Australia after the band’s biggest tour yet, playing almost 40 shows in 50 days.

Frontman Frankie McLaughlin said he was “blown away” by the extent of support from fans half a world away from the band’s Sydney home base.

The Rumjacks discovered fans spanning England, Germany, Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, France, Ireland and many more countries, McLaughlin said.

Some had even travelled up to 10 hours to see the show, he marvelled.

“It was amazing to see that we had made quite an impact over there.”

The response overseas gave the band plenty of motivation, McLaughlin said.

“We’ve already got bigger shows planned for 2016 and we’ll be back in Europe from May onwards but not before we play some more gigs around Australia.”

McLaughlin is quite the perfectionist when it comes to writing lyrics.

The Rumjacks’ new album, Sober and Godless, released earlier this year, was the first time the lead singer had approached songwriting with a solid set of themes in mind.

Inspired by day-to-day interactions and the experiences of those around him, McLaughlin’s work extended to even creating the album artwork to portray his concepts of conflict, heartbreak and redemption.

“I do torture myself over getting the lyrics right,” he said.

“I’ve always been a fan of really well-crafted poetry.

“Sometimes I’ll wake up in the morning with a complete story in my head and the urge to want to tell it.

“I’ll think, ‘is there a way I can treat the sens-

An award-winning Australian social satire will be the final 2015 production for one of Geelong’s top theatre companies.

Geelong Repertory will present Nick Enright’s 1990 play Daylight Saving on Friday 20 November for a 10-show season.

“First performed in 1989, the play has become a modern Australian repertory standard. This will be the first time Geelong Repertory has staged it,” the troupe said.

“Daylight Saving will be directed

by Scott Beaton who has directed previous Geelong Repertory productions including Over the Moon and Arsenic and Old Lace.”

“Highly accomplished” Rep regulars Lauren Crute and Steven Georgiadis would play the lead roles of Felicity and Tom, the company said.

Set in New South Wales’ Pittwater, the characters are a successful couple whose relationship is under pressure from their hectic lifestyle.

Tom flies to Los Angeles on business, forgetting their anniversary.

Feeling forgotten as she prepares to turn the clocks back for the end of daylight saving, Felicity receives a surprise phone call from an old flame.

Slipping back into character, Morgan said his Drysdale audiences would be swept away by his “Zither Arpeggiator... Fascinating Fingers and celebrated One Finger Method”.

Morgan said that with one finger on the pulse - and the other on his organ, he was acutely aware of how audiences were patiently waiting to rediscover the joy of his keyboard.

Promoters said the “hilarious show” would offer a licensed bar with patrons invited to bring along their own supper plates.

Morgan’s show begins at 8pm, with tickets available from City of Greater Geelong customer service centres.

The GLE Coupe stands out from the Mercedes-Benz large SUV range.

By DEREK OGDEN Anybody who thinks the new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe is a GLE just with a slicked-up body stuck on can think again. This is a different beast altogether, molding the best of two segments, coupe with a sports utility vehicle.

Having driven both models within 24 hours of each other I can attest to this.

Three variants have been pencilled in for Australia. They are the GLE 350d 4Matic Coupe, selling for $121,900, plus on-road costs; the GLE 450 AMG 4Matic at $141,900 and the AMG GLE 63 S 4Matic for $198,900.

Already with a series of successful coupes to the Mercedes name, the GLE Coupe joins the classic two-door C, E and S-Class models and the four-door CLS and CLA-Class coupes. From the simplified, yet robust radiator grille, flanked by unique lighting set-up to sleek profile and twin five-spoke 21 or 22-inch wheels the GLE Coupe range stands alone from its SUV stablemate.

The company says, with room for up to five occupants, it combines typical coupe attributes, such as sportiness, dynamism and agility with the confident presence, versatility and robustness of a typical sports utility vehicle.

Added to this are the fine touches of luxury that continue to set the Benz apart but also unexpected bonuses such as the widest rear seat bench and the largest luggage space - 1650 litres - in its class. For the first time in this segment, MercedesBenz is also offering a fully electric extendable and retractable trailer coupling, which also features a trailer stabilisation electronic stability program.

At the foot of the range is the six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine powered GLE 350d 4Matic, which drives through a nine-speed automatic.

Power output is 190kW, while maximum torque of 620Nm is on tap from a mere 1600rpm.

For an entry-level model, standard equipment is exceptional, with AMG body styling, Dynamic Select transmission modes, 4Matic permanent all-wheel drive, Airmatic Air suspension, 21-inch AMG wheels, LED Intelligent Light System, Comand navigation, Easy-Pack automatic power tailgate, Harman Kardon Logic 7 14-speaker surround-sound system, Nappa leather upholstery and heated and electronically adjustable AMG Line sports front seats.

The first AMG sports model to arrive in the Australian market, the GLE 450 AMG 4Matic Coupe, presents an attractive introduction to the sports car world and Mercedes’ performance arm.

Making use of a six-cylinder bi-turbo petrol engine putting out 270kW of power and 520Nm of torque, the car races from zero to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds. In addition to the standard equipment across the range, the GLE 450 AMG 4Matic Coupe also wears a panoramic sliding sunroof, AMG Line Nappa leather upholstery, 22-inch AMG Wheels, Active Curve System with anti-roll stabilisation and an Anti-Theft Protection package.

The top of the range Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC Coupe benefits from the MercedesAMG ‘One man, One Engine’ philosophy, the stonking 5.5-litre V8 motor being put together by a single highly-trained technician.

The result is that the GLE 63 S Coupe comes up with 430kW and 760Nm, which in conjunction with the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic transmission, has the vehicle shooting from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds.

A list of standard equipment includes AMG Driver’s Package, AMG Performance Exhaust, Air-Balance Package, digital TV tuner, luxury heated and ventilated multi-contour front seats in AMG Nappa leather.

Ground-breaking powertrain apart, the newly designed Airmatic air suspension - available for the first time with the continuously variable damping system ADS Plus - ensures exceptionally stable driving.

The damping system realigns itself depending on the driver’s preselected Dynamic Select mode.

Operating conditions are monitored through a steering angle sensor, four turning angle sensors and driving speed from the ESP and brake pedal switch. The result is infinitely variable adjustment of damping for each wheel.

Comfort mode calls up characteristics of a classic Mercedes-Benz saloon with relaxed, effortless cruising. Sport has the GLE Coupe morphing into a vehicle with sporty dynamics.

The Dynamic Select Sport+ setting offers the driver added spice. Throttle response, gearchange strategy, ESP thresholds, steering power assist or the characteristic of the continuous damper adjustment exclusive to AMG: the system networks all the control systems, generating a wide variety of distinct driving experiences. All modes are displayed on the centrally positioned dashboard screen and are easy to operate via the Comand system knob.

The Active Curve System, with active roll stabilisation, is also part of the special sports systems that are activated when the driver selects Sport or Sport+. At the same time, the active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles raise the comfort to saloon level and compensate for even heavy, one-sided instability such as when driving over potholes.

Thus, combined with the freshly configured Sports Direct-Steer system, seriously crumpled road conditions are easily ironed out.

Mercedes’ state-of-the-art safety is standard throughout the GLE Coupe range with nine airbags in position, Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Distronic Plus cruise control with Steering Assist and Stop and Go Pilot.

Matching the accelerating ability, stopping the coupe is of premium quality with Pre-Safe Brake and Pre-Safe Plus helping to put on the anchors.

Also coming to the aid of the driver are Crosswind Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, an Active Bonnet and an LED Intelligent Light System with Adaptive High Beam Assist Plus.

An introduction to the GLE Coupe on the media launch less than auspicious, with a bump on the bonce welcoming my entry to the driver’s seat, the result of the vehicle's sleek, aerodynamic profile. A minor mishap, it did not happen again on repeated entries.

All was forgiven, with the GLE Coupe reprising the pleasure gained from its wagon counterpart a day earlier, especially in the rorty aural contribution of the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4Matic.

SPORT Finch key to second win Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club is well placed to record its second victory when it resumes its game at home against Camberwell on Saturday.

Bowling first last weekend, the Cats were in trouble early when the visitors moved to 1/67 but when Luke Muller (3/56) and Andrew McDonald (1/12) snagged a double breakthrough, it was game on.

Debutant Dylan Moroney (3/24) then bowled beautifully through the middle of the innings to see Camberwell all out for just 183.

In reply, Geelong got off to the worst possible start with Josh McDonald, unfortunately, run out without a run on the board and Meyrick Buchanan out for a duck shortly after.

But Hayden Butterworth (27) joined skipper Eamonn Vines (39*) to steady the ship, the cats finishing day one in a dominant position at 3/76.

With Aaron Finch available tomorrow and likely to come in at the fall of the next wicket, Geelong should be able to record a much needed victory.

In the Geelong Cricket Association, the season

is already a third of the way through and for some clubs it’s time to get their act together or risk not playing finals this season.

Grovedale is one of those sides and it has a big opportunity to keep itself in the race when it takes on Newtown and Chilwell at Stinton Oval.

After knocking off Geelong City in round three, the Tigers were smashed by South Barwon last week, only managing 108 runs, before conceding 308 in reply.

Eccles turns pro before masters, state championships Torquay golfer Ben Eccles has turned professional following a stellar year.

Eccles tied for third at the 2015 Victorian Open, captained the winning Men’s Interstate team and took out the NSW Open last weekend.

“It leaves me 10 months ahead of where I planned to be,” said the 20-year-old.

“I’m really happy with the decision that I’ve made (to turn professional) and I’m really looking forward to what’s to come.”

Eccles is no stranger to professional tournaments, competing with the pros as an amateur for the past three years.

His decision to go pro has been made just in time for the Australian Masters next week.

Eccles said he was confident that his form was strong enough to match it with the rest of the professional field.

“I just want to have fun and enjoy the week.

Playing with the best pros from Australia is going to be awesome as well.

“I just want to enjoy the experience and see what I can do. If I can back up playing like last week then that would be awesome as well.”

Eccles has been busy competing in a bag of tournaments, including the Riversdale Cup and South Australian Classic, and trips to the home of golf at St Andrews and America.

He started playing at age six, nominating his dad as his biggest influence, having introduced Ben to the game.

“Dad is an avid golf fan and still plays off four and my older brother is off a handicap of two, so it’s a bit of a golfing family.

“I feel thrilled that I have the opportunity to go places at this age. It’s good being busy, I enjoy it.

We’ll see if it opens any doors to bigger events and we’ll go from there.”

Eccles will have the opportunity to improve his third place finish at the 2016 Victorian Open, to be held from 4 to 7 February at Thirteenth Beach Golf Links for the fourth consecutive year.

The tournament has been beefed up for 2016 with up to 132 men and 132 women vying for a share of the increased $600,000 prize pool, split equally between the fields.

Total prize money is up $100,000 on last year.

Golf Victoria CEO Simon Brookhouse said he was confident that the event would continue to build on recent successes.

“Since taking the event down to the Greater Geelong region it has experienced a complete resurgence,” Brookhouse said.

“The mounting crowds have been a strong indicator of the quality of golf and also the spectator experience provided at Thirteenth Beach.”

Pair boat 33 fish in frantic session ON THE BITE Chris Pitman White other anglers targeted snapper, Mark Sesar and Adrian Cole fished around the White Lady off St Leonards recently in search of whiting.

With a little in the berley, they were soon into a frantic session that ended with 33 fish, a dozen of which were at 38cm.

Windy weather last week focused anglers to seek sheltered waters, with Queenscliff Harbour again producing silver trevally to 40cm for anglers casting soft plastics into the cut and around moored boats. Some of the best results were at night, with the trevally holding around the harbour lights, which attract schools of bait.

Large squid were still available in the deeper sections of Queenscliff Bight, where the fast water demanded larger jig sizes.

Schools of Australian salmon were spotted feeding on the surface occasionally, with trolled white occy skirted lures catching fish.

Clifton Springs again produced snapper.

Andrew Pettit and father James fished just out from the quarries on Sunday morning with fresh silver whiting, quickly boating a snapper over 4kg.

Further up the bay, Dylan Curran tried again off Werribee, this time catching a personal-best of 93cm and 8.2kg. Soft plastic anglers worked reef structures around Werribee for snapper to 4kg at first and last light. Small fish were a problem, though.

Brain Long and John Mole encountered some exceptional salmon fishing down the Surf Coast.

Spinning from the rock platforms around Lorne, they banked salmon to just over 2kg in wet conditions.

Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lught fished estuary systems between Mallacoota and Tathra, landing a wide variety of species including bream, flathead, salmon and tailor on soft plastics and hard-body lures.

Some of his standouts included bream over 40cm and flathead over 70cm.
