He said that as a politician, he would like to remain open with the community and all tiers of government.

“I enjoy talking to people, and I’m not afraid for people to ask me questions and hold me accountable,” he said.

“These communities will thrive but we’ve got a short window and I think that’s about making sure that we collectively work together with all the tiers of government.”

Mr Littleproud said he expected a federal election around September next year and that he would be getting around the Maranoa electorate as much as he could before then.

“You can go 20 kilometres out of Warwick in any direction and you get no coverage,” he said.

“As you go west it gets worse and worse.

“I know of a producer who lost a couple of contracts because he couldn’t put a photo of his hay online. That’s an inequity we need to fix. We need to get our internet speeds up, and up to scratch.”

DAVID Littleproud knows he’s got enormous shoes to fill in replacing Bruce Scott but he isn’t letting it show.

Winning the Liberal National Party (LNP) preselection for the Federal seat of Maranoa last month, he is an election away from inheriting one of the safest political seats in Australia.

Having grown up in Chinchilla, he has spent the past 16 years living in Warwick and the past 20 years working in banking and agribusiness.

Agriculture is a sector he is deeply passionate about.

“Agriculture and tourism are probably the two common threads that link every community right across Maranoa,” he said.

At the heart of what Mr Littleproud wants to achieve is connectivity for rural areas, which he said, came from a mix of improving transport and telecommunications.

“If we get that infrastructure right, innovation builds off it,” he said.

“We’ve actually got the raw materials the world wants. It’s now about us getting them into Asia and the rest of the world.”

To improve transport, he said, it was important to make roads safer and he strongly supported the rail link between Brisbane and Melbourne.

A big part of his vision is increasing telecommunications coverage, through things like the NBN, to benefit education, health and business.

The project has been in the works for over two years with the new Community Bank to replace the existing Bendigo Bank Agency.

Chairman of the Stanthorpe Regional Community Bank Board Don Gaske said they would be looking at putting the new bank in the main street of Stanthorpe sometime soon. “Community banking returns profits to this region and we are able to do this because the Community Bank model has a local focus in all of its dealings,” he said. “Local directors make the decisions about where funds are distributed by a process of community consultation.

It’s been said countless times before but it is true snakes won’t attack you unless they feel threatened.

Local snake handler Lyn Gynther said instead of being scared of the 127 land snakes in Australia, you should get smart.

“Understand them, educate yourself, and learn a little bit about their behaviour,” she said.

“A snake will only react to an action, so basic physics really, if you throw your hands up that’s a threat to them, it frightens them, and they’re going to react and defend themselves.”

Lyn said there were a few things to remember should you encounter a snake.

“Just keep your eye on it, if it’s in your yard, keep an eye on it and slowly back away from it, and give it an exit route so it can get away,” she said.

“If you have a snake coming towards you, the best thing you can do is stand perfectly still.

I’ve had them go over my feet and through my legs and they haven’t even realised that I’ve been there because I’ve basically just become another part of the environment.”

“Summer is the mating season, they’ll be starting to wake up now and they’ll breed and have babies around December, January and come winter they’ll go to hibernation again,” she said.

“Snakes normally are out in summer between 10am till 3pm, they are moving more active at that stage and browns in particular around that time.

By DANE LILLINGSTONE RESIDENTS of Stanthorpe will be able to catch a glimpse into the future of the town with the Stanthorpe Streetscape Plan now on public display and available to view on online.

The streetscape plan was created by renowned landscape architect John Mongard and shows a vision of the future of Stanthorpe’s streets, parks and overall plan for structural design.

Southern Downs Regional Council decided in the general council meeting that they would put the plan on public display and invite written community feedback.

According to the plan “the Stanthorpe Streetscape Plan aims to create an integrated and walkable town centre focused around Stanthorpe’s main street and its key public spaces”.

Key elements of the plan include: Improving Maryland Street South with new public spaces, alfresco areas, pedestrian crossings, footpaths and laneway works.

Introducing a new shaded carpark, walkways and a laneway public space for Rogers Street carpark and Frome Lane.

A new crossing, footpaths and alfresco areas for the High Street gateway.

Avenue planting and footpaths for the southern town entry.

Residents have expressed some concern about the potential costs of the developments but Cr Jamie Mackenzie, who has a background in town planning, said the community should not be overly concerned with the cost of the plan as it is broken up into a series of projects.

“The report carefully divides the design concept into a series of projects. We do not have the money yet but the completion of the study puts us in a position to attract funds” Cr Mackenzie said.

“I am excited about the Stanthorpe Streetscape Study, not only because John Mongard has extensively consulted with the community, but has creatively interpreted the suggestions.

“For Stanthorpe, we want something unique with quality

in the town centre. It is a very restrained design to fit with budget constraints but it has a ‘wow’ factor”.

Southern Downs mayor Peter Blundell said community input was important.

“It’s important to bring this project full circle, and enable the community to review and provide comment on the masterplan. Written submissions will be considered and incorporated into a report with recommendations on the masterplan before its final adoption by council,” Cr Blundell said.

Development approved The site for the approved development at 11 Rowland Street, Warwick.

Southern Downs Regional Council’s Director of Planning and Environment Ken Harris said the number of stages the development would be completed in had also been reduced.

“The original development application was for 39 units to be constructed over 14 stages,” he said.

“The settlement, in accordance with the judgment from the Planning and Environment Court, is for 34 units to be constructed over 10 stages.

“This means there will now be five units and four stages less than sought in the original application.”

Nursing home to close

The Stanthorpe Nursing Home will close its doors on 11 December.

The nursing home opened in May 1969.

It has been reported that the nursing home employs 65 residents and will displace 35 residents with the decision.

Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Peter Blundell said meetings had been taking place since the announcement to relocate residents.

“The meetings held between the council, Stanthorpe Nursing Home and other providers of aged care within the region, have been very beneficial in providing accurate information

to attendees about the process being undertaken by Stanthorpe Nursing Home representatives to relocate residents and secure future employment or other suitable arrangements for employees,” he said.

“I would commend the Stanthorpe Nursing Home management team for the diligence with which they are pursuing solutions to issues which the nursing home closure will create, and I have also offered any appropriate support that would be beneficial in assisting the nursing home through this process.”

STANTHORPE Nursing Home has announced it will be closing its doors only weeks before Christmas.

A statement released by the nursing home said that increasing costs and expectations were the reasons behind its decision.

“It has been decided by the Board of Stanthorpe Convalescent Home trading as Stanthorpe Nursing Home to cease operations on the 11 December 2015,” a statement said.

“This is not a decision taken lightly. Changing aged care expectations and increasing costs have had their impact on small rural aged care services.

“The board of Stanthorpe Nursing Home has done some serious consultation and feasibility testing including refurbishment and financial planning.

“In addition to stakeholders’ considerations, the decision is influenced by macroeconomic conditions, community and industry expectations, competition, government regulations, policies, funding and the cost of compliance with legislative requirements.

“SNH has strived through the years to meet the challenges of aged care, trends and accreditation standards, however SNH is an old, small facility and the government has given us approval to close.

“We would like to extend our gratitude to all those who have had any association with the facility and who have supported us and chosen us to provide quality care and services - our present and past residents, families and representatives, present and past staff, volunteers and the community of Stanthorpe.”

TWO extremely lucky people walked away from a head-on truck crash on the Cunningham Highway.

On Saturday night, about 11.10pm, two trucks were reported to have collided head on. The incident occurred 35 kilometres west of Warwick with no reported injuries.

The accident shut down the highway temporarily and it was not completely re-opened for four hours.

Both trucks were towed and both drivers walked away from the accident. Investigations are continuing, but police credit evasive actions by the drivers for the lack of injuries.

Senior Sergeant Jamie Deacon said: “They were very lucky there were no injuries”.

Bikies ride through town WARWICK police intercepted two members of the Rebels Motorcycle Club on drug driving charges last week.

Following the news a bikie meeting was being held in New South Wales over the weekend, local police had an increased presence on the Cunningham Highway.

They intercepted two members on Friday at 12.13pm and 2.23pm who both returned positive drug tests.

Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Jamie Deacon said local police have targeted highways over the past week.

“We had information that people associated with the Rebels motorcycle gang would be passing through Warwick,” he said.

AFTER a long and drawn out legal battle, the proposed apartment complex development on Rowland Street, Warwick, has been approved.

The Planning and Environment Court has cleared the path for the development to go ahead.

The development will consist of 34 single-storey units as opposed to the previous plan that included a mix of two-storey units.

Developer CH Property Holdings had been locked in a planning battle with Southern Downs Regional Council for years but a revised plan satisfied previous concerns.

The plan includes the more open space, fewer units and a reduction in height.

Warwick schooled THE Southern Downs has officially welcomed a new college to the region.

Keystone College in Warwick has been in operation since June this year but with the official opening has stamped its presence on the Downs.

The college has caught on in the community with 29 students now enrolled through the Warwick campus.

Team leader and Warwick local Jo Thomas was instrumental in getting the campus opened and explained exactly what Keystone does.

“It’s a learning lounge for students. Basically we offer blended

learning to students. They can come here and study in our lounge or in their lounge at home,” she said.

“We offer anything they need to help, like workshops. They are also allocated a tutor who can talk to them by Skype, email or phone.”

They currently offer four diplomas - Diploma of Business, Diploma of Management, Diploma of Community Services, and Diploma of Interactive Digital Media. Classes do not happen on campus, instead materials are accessed online and the campus acts as a guide with onsite staff available for help and guidance.

Ms Thomas said Keystone identified a problem with long distance students.

Team leader and Warwick local Jo Thomas was instrumental in getting the campus opened.

“We find that lot of distance students drop out a lot during their courses because they feel like they don’t have the support. There’s no

actual physical place that’s helping them along. We help with that,” she said.

“I was in job services before. A lot of my job seekers who starting training were dropping out because of that lack of face-to-face contact.

“If they have any questions they can come to the campus and ask myself or contact their distant tutor.”

Ms Thomas said anyone can drop in at the campus at 84 Palmerin Street, Warwick, and see what it’s all about.

“You can drop in anytime between 8am and 4pm Monday to Friday, or you can call or visit our website and apply,” she said.

Wineries’ winning ways THE 2015 Australian Small Winemakers Show (ASWS) has again confirmed the national strength of wineries in the Granite Belt.

Severnlea’s Ridgemill Estate was one of the big winners this year.

Ridgemill’s 2014 WYP Chardonnay was awarded Trophy and National Champion and Trophy and Best Queensland White Wine in Classes 1-21.

They were further rewarded with winemaker and viticulturist Peter McGlashan awarded Trophy for Champion Viticulturist.

Owner Martin Cooper said they would look forward to showcasing their new trophy winning wine.

Peter McGlashan thanked the Granite Belt wine industry members for their ongoing support and assistance.

The new awards continue a long line of success for the winery following a gold medal and trophy win at the James Halliday 2013 Chardonnay Challenge for its 2012 Chardonnay and a history of strong showings in the International Chardonnay Challenge.

The other big winner on the night was Ballandean’s Golden Grove Estate, taking home the awards for Industry Technical Excellence in Queensland Winemaking and Most Successful Queensland Exhibitor.

Whisky Gully Wines in Severnlea also picked up the Dick de Luca Memorial Trophy for Best Queensland Shiraz with its 2012 Black Rod. ASWS president John Lucas said the awards were a good opportunity to showcase smaller winemakers.

Memorabilia to remember THIS week Australia celebrated Remembrance Day with a number of services throughout the region.

Naval Association of Australia Queensland Section Inc President Norm Gale oversaw Gallipoli Centenary Memorabilia stalls in Stanthorpe to show support.

Mr Gale has been working with the local community for six years selling military memorabilia and has also been involved with establishing the navy cadets.

They also work with the Stanthorpe RSL Sub-Branch as well as getting involved with Defence Force Welfare.

“One of our big activities is Defence Force Welfare; such as ‘Mates for Mates’ and ‘Soldier On,’” Mr Gale said.

“Community groups are also part of it all too, such as soccer and disability support.”

All money raised from the stall went towards the welfare of Defence Force Personnel and local community organisations.

FOLLOWING on from my letter to the Free Times on 7 November regarding the behaviour of a real estate business a dear friend, knowing the angst her original findings of the website in Beijing had dealt me, went further. She was able to mail to me in glorious colour the interior and exterior views of my home that had been formerly removed from the market in 2008, right down to the pot-plants!

She went further to a business called Domain and to her astonishment they had 35 pictures of my entire property! She also spoke for me to them. However when I was able to approach them myself by telephone the slow process of their removal of this unwelcome, unwanted listing of my property, took a turn for the better at a suggestion of a law-suit!

Little newsagent a prized one

By DANE LILLINGSTONE IF CLIFTON News is anything to go by, the town could be in for a mini-business boom.

The newsagent has continued a strong year since winning the Australian Newsagents Federation Lottery Agent of the Year in September.

The little shop on King Street in Clifton is run by Georgie and Kent Meacle. They’ve been in Clifton for 12 years now, and have become an institution in the community.

“We only bought this store on

2 June last year,” Georgie said.

“I think our Lotto’s growth has been over 20 per cent since we took over, which has been phenomenal. Across Powerball, it was up nearly 50 per cent.”

Since taking over the store with her husband, Georgie said she had witnessed business grow in the town.

“We’re finding the business in Clifton is growing. It’s really growing as a little town,” she said.

“Some other small towns just stay the same.

“We found Clifton a really

welcoming town, we’ve felt very welcomed. Our kids have gone to school here and grown up here.”

Georgie said she was shocked when they won the award earlier this year.

“When we won, we were very surprised. We didn’t really think we’d have a hope in hell to be honest. We were competing against a lot of bigger stores, a lot of franchises as well,” she said.

“We couldn’t have done any of this without the great support from our customers.”

THE Allora Regional Sports Museum has existed in some form or another since 1998, and has only continued to grow.

It’s a remarkable effort for a small town to produce the quality of sporting stars that they have.

Foundation president Perry Cronin said he didn't even know what to do with some of the memorabilia they’ve picked up over the years.

Perry said he couldn’t explain the high amount of success Allora has had in sport.

“I don’t know really,” he said.

“I’d like to try to claim a record for the percentage of people we have, the success we’ve had, I don’t think we’d be beaten.

“There are good kids coming through all the time, with good support. Just dedicated people I’d say.”

The museum is currently open from noon-4pm on Sundays or by appointment.

Perry said the entire operation was run purely by passionate people.

“We just got a local committee and it’s all volunteers, noone gets paid, it’s just done for a love for it really,” he said.

“We started with the boots of Brian Phelan. They’re leg-

It all started when it was suggested that Brian did something special with the boots, and initially it was decided to hang the boots in the pub in Allora.

Following that it all blew up. A scheduled dinner attracted 240 people and celebrations had to

be moved.

Starting in the back of a shop in 1998, the museum now resides at 78 Herbert Street, Allora, in a building that is packed to the brim with local sporting memorabilia and with people like Laura Geitz winning World Cups, it’s only going to get fuller.

wins Cookbook fights cancer

By DANE LILLINGSTONE LESLIE Park in Warwick will take over from Glengallan Homestead as the main location for Warwick’s Australia Day celebrations next year.

The Southen Regional Downs Council moved last month to open up a period of consultation with the public on where the celebrations should be held, after concerns were raised about the accessibility of Glengallan for some in the community.

An online survey was created, as per a previous council resolution, and opened for 21 days with 95 responses, with 53 per cent of the survey declaring their support for Glengallan.

However it was a petition submitted to council that ultimately swayed opinion.

The petition was presented to council with over 600 people signing and stating they wanted celebrations held in Warwick.

Warwick celebrations will now be held at Leslie Park and are to be organised by a committee set up by CEO David Keenan. Councillors Jamie Mackenzie and Neil Meiklejohn will sit on the committee after both putting their hands up.

It was ultimately decided that funding for Australia Day would be more evenly spread across the Southern Downs.

Leslie Park will host Australia Day celebrations in Warwick from next year.

Warwick and Stanthorpe will receive equal funding getting $6000 each while Killarney Lions Club will receive $500 for celebrations there and Allora will get $500 towards continued celebrations at Glengallan Homestead.

Cr Mackenzie was pleased with the outcome.

“Today’s winner is public consultation,” he said.

“It’s about what the community says. To me Australia Day celebrations are run in each community and they all deserve our support.

“Feedback from the community is that this has always been a Warwick function.”

Deputy mayor Ross Bartley said it was a decision for the community.

“The petition shows there is a lot of passion in the community,” he said.

“For community access, I think the park is the appropriate place.”

Cr Glynn Rees was the lone voice against moving away from Glengallan.

“I’m a supporter of Glengallan Homestead. I think we’re very lucky to have that in our region,” he said.

Cr Rees was the only councillor to vote against shifting to Warwick as the motion was carried.

NOVEMBER is lung cancer awareness month - the disease is one of the leading causes of death in Australia with 11,000 people diagnosed every year.

One lady from Texas has taken to a cookbook to raise awareness for the disease.

Rebecca Dunn started a project with her mum Frances after Frances was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2013. Together they started making the Lung Cancer Warriors’ Cookbook to raise awareness for lung cancer and remove the stigma of it being a smokers’ disease, as Frances never smoked.

Frances passed away in April this year at the age of 54 but Rebecca and her sister continued the project in her honour.

Rebecca said she was shocked when her mother was diagnosed just before Christmas in 2013 as she had never been a smoker and doctors had initially thought it wasn’t serious.

“They sent mum to Toowoomba Base Hospital for further testing,” she said “She was up there for numerous weeks while they did tests, took samples and found out that the black spots were cancer in her hip and spine, however they were not the primary cancer.

So more testing occurred and that is when we got the horrifying news that mum had Stage IV metastatic Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer. Mum was a lifelong never smoker.”

Rebecca said that upon hearing the lack of support for lung cancer, her mother decided to do something to raise awareness.

“After talking to other patients with lung cancer and hearing their stories and learning that lung cancer had next to no support from the Cancer Council and other places, mum wanted to make a difference.

Her dream was to help raise awareness and funding for early detection tests for lung cancer as there are none, while removing the stigma that lung cancer is only a smoker’s disease, which it is not,” she said.

“That’s when I remembered mum had helped compile a cookbook for the local church when we were kids. Mum absolutely loved the idea of doing a cookbook that featured

lung cancer warriors around the world.”

The cookbook is set to be released on 14 November, at Shine a Light morning tea at Texas Treats from 9.30 am to 11.30am. It will also be available online via global book distributors such as Amazon, Fishpond, The Book Depository, Booktopia, and The Nile. Saddlery goes Totally Wild KENT Saddlery will be featured on an upcoming episode of Network Ten’s Totally Wild programme.

The children’s TV series has been a long time staple of the network and the team visited Kent Saddlery in Stanthorpe to film a segment.

Totally Wild’s Stacey Thomson, or Ranger Stacey, has been on the show since 1992 and she interviewed saddle maker Ben Kent. They talked about how saddles are made and how they are custom-fitted for the horse and rider.

Ben demonstrated how riders are measured for the saddles, how photos are taken of the horse, along with a template of the horse’s wither.

Stacey tried hand-stitching during the visit and had a ride on Kent Saddlery’s horse, Albert, through the saddlery’s resting yards.

Ben said it was a great experience for the business.

“Stacey and her crew, Glen and Peter, were great to work with, and obviousely enjoy their jobs,” he said.

“I remember Stacey as ‘Ranger Stacey’ from when I was young, so it was cool to have the opportunity to meet her.”

The segment is expected air in the next few months.

By DANE LILLINGSTONE CHAMPION bull rider Matt Boland said it was always his dream to travel around the world doing what he loves.

Originally from Goondiwindi and now residing in Haden near Toowoomba, Matt didn’t take down the big one at the Warwick Rodeo but that won’t stop him or his wife Miss Rodeo Australia Danika Boland from touring the circuit.

“I’ve been riding bulls professionally for about nine or 10 years now,” Matt said.

“I guess it was just always my dream. I had to work hard for it.

You got to train hard, go to the gym, run, live and breathe it every day, which is time consuming but it’s something you have to be really passionate about. You can’t be half in or out. You got to love it.

“I rode a few steers when I was kid but when I turned 18, 19 I started riding bulls again then when I turned about 21, 22 that’s when my career really took up.”

Matt has always shown potential.

He is now in his rookie year of the Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA) after touring the circuit through the United States last year with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).

He entered his third Warwick Rodeo this year but said he was happy to be back in Queensland.

“This is where I want to be,” he said.

He also said that the hardest part of his career was the constant travelling.

“Sometimes it’s the miles. We’re back and forth across the country every weekend.

“That’s probably the hardest thing but it’s all worth it,” he said.

Matt and Danika are both now on their way back to America where the touring will continue.

Batten down the hatches SUMMER may not be officially here but Queensland’s summer storms have begun.

The Southern Downs and surrounding regions have been struck by the first storms of the season in the last fortnight.

Fernvale, west of Brisbane, was the hardest hit so far this storm season with several houses losing their roofs when a savage storm passed through in late October.

With a hotter than average October, November has begun with average high temperatures in the Southern Downs reaching the high

20s with lows hovering between 10-15 degrees Celsius. The greater Darling Downs and Granite Belt region will see high temperatures push into the mid-30s as the month progresses.

Storms and showers are expected to close out the week and continue over the weekend while an inland surface trough will move west while weakening as a weak ridge builds along the east coast of Queensland.

THE continued abuse of the ‘free range’ eggs label has led the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to release a guide to better assist producers in the labelling of eggs.

In September this year, Darling Downs Fresh Eggs was fined $250,000 after the Federal Court ruled it had intentionally mislabelled its eggs as free range. There has been over half a million dollars in fines for misleading labelling issued over the last 14 months.

Now the ACC has released a guide to help egg producers better understand their Australian Consumer Law (ACL) rights and obligations when promoting their products as free range.

The Commonwealth Treasury is now also said to be investigating whether to adopt a national standard for free range egg labelling.

ACCC chairman Rod Sims said egg labels should not be misleading.

“If it is not normal for most of the hens to leave the barn and to move about freely on an open range on most days, making a free range claim is likely to be misleading,” Mr Sims said.

“Indeed, the ACCC does not expect farmers to use a precise approach of tracking hens or head counts. A common sense approach of simply observing that the range is in regular use by a significant proportion of hens on most days is likely to be sufficient.”

Pub crawls back to life

By TANIA PHILLIPS THE Karara Tavern is more than just a pub - it’s a general store and the life-blood of the small rural community and soon to be a country destination - that quaint bush pub perfect for short breaks or day trips.

New owners Peter Raddatz and Jennifer Ann took over earlier in the year, deciding to close for a few weeks to refurbish the place - five days in and “the locals were suffering severe dehydration,” Jennifer joked.

With the local campdraft on that weekend, they re-opened after requests from the community. Since then Peter and Jennifer have been slowly but

surely fixing the place up while remaining open for business and learning just how important it is to Karara and its residents and the truck drivers who stop nearby to sleep on long hauls.

It’s something that Gold Coast girl Jennifer has relished along with the involvement and interest of the community in helping the couple fix the pub.

It was rebuilt 38 years ago when the highway went through to replace the old pub on the other side of the railway. Jennifer had wanted to adorn the bar with old tools to reflect the area’s wheat and gold heritage - local help has made that happen.

In return, the couple are returning the pub to life, they now

do meals on Friday and Saturday night and Sunday lunch (including a pig on the spit buffet this Sunday) as well as other special occasion events.

They also have four rooms - each with their own ensuite each has new linen etc, but will get a full make-over when the pub’s floor (their current project) is complete.

They are putting in extensive gardens and the next step will be to add a coffee machine and milkshakes to their menu as they slowly but surely bring things back to life.

RESIDENTS in Warwick and the Southern Downs will be able to witness a special event next month when the 100 year anniversary of the March of the Dungarees is commemorated.

The March of the Dungarees commenced in Warwick in 1915 with the intention of recruiting men for World War I. Initially, 28 local men enlisted and by the time the march reached Brisbane, a total of 128 men had signed up for the war.

The night before they left, the local community of Warwick gathered to show their support and spirited applause as the men awaited their departure at dawn.

Southern Downs Regional Council has organised a reenactment to take place in Warwick to mark the centenary anniversary.

Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell said the event would allow people to experience what the energy was like in the community

“From 5.30pm, the events of 1915 will be re-enacted, before moving into the Warwick Town Hall for a formal ceremony followed by an evening of music and poetry,” he said.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for families to pay tribute to the men who volunteered to serve

Australia in the First World War. “Tickets to the evening event are free, but unfortunately there is limited space. More information on how to secure your ticket will be available shortly.

However, the event will be streamed live on a big screen outside the Town Hall, so residents can bring along a chair to be part of the proceedings.”

There will also be four commemorative walls will be on display in the Allora, Stanthorpe, and Warwick libraries.

“Council is inviting members of the community to contribute their memories, tributes, and photos to these walls to share with the wider community,” Cr Blundell said.

Council meeting crosses borders A CROSS-border meeting of local governments, councillors and politicians has taken place in Wallangarra to discuss strategic ties between the Southern Downs and Tenterfield Shire.

Among those in attendance were mayors, councillors and staff of the Southern Downs Regional Council and Tenterfield Shire Council. Also in attendance were Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg, Lismore MP Thomas George and other local heads of government.

Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell said the meeting was an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the two districts.

“I think the meeting provided a great opportunity for both local government areas to put in front of our respective State Members, and the government advisors, the issues that are pertinent to our shared region,” he said.

“We were able to highlight the need for, and encourage the Queensland Government representatives to consider a Cross Border Commissioner position in Queensland, and the Hon.

The meeting took place at Wallangarra Railway Station Cafe.

Thomas George MP, Member for Lismore, certainly highlighted the fact that NSW didn’t gain much traction in these cross-border areas until a commissioner was appointed.

“It was pleasing to note comments from the NSW Cross Border Commissioner James McTavish that the MOU and strategic alliance between Southern Downs and Tenterfield is the most progressive and formalised partnership he’s seen.”

Tenterfield mayor Peter Petty said the relationship with SDRC would only get stronger.

“We have a unique agreement with Southern Downs

Regional Council that can only get stronger the more we work together and also through our involvement with our respective state governments. In the end, this work is all for our communities which we all serve,” he said.

A joint Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two councils in September 2013.

Among the topics of discussion were problems with employment and transportation of products to the Port of Brisbane, the challenges of recruiting and retaining a diversified workforce, daylight savings, the reduction of red tape across all levels of government, education and the effectiveness of government funding.

There were also a number of current problems identified including the cross-border relationship of rural emergency websites, disaster apps and increasing the effective flow of information to the community during disasters, tourism, employment and higher education opportunities.

The two-day event will be held once again at Ballandean Estate this weekend, 14 and 15 November.

Gabba faces the test The

THE Australians wrapped up a comprehensive win over the Black Caps on day four of the Gabba Test and fans were treated to some outstanding cricket throughout the game. The new faces in the Australian side stood tall and while not wanting to get too carried away, the changing of the guard appears to have been accomplished with a minimum of fuss.

The same cannot be said of the kerfuffle surrounding crowd numbers at the Gabba.

Because of the poor turnout, questions are being raised about the future of the Gabba Test.

Should Brisbane retain the first test? Why do Queenslanders not support the Test etc etc.

Perhaps organisers should take a look at their scheduling before they consider knifing the traditional Gabba opener.

Before the final reconfiguration of the Gabba and not all that long ago a crowd of 21,000 would have almost filled the stadium. These days not so.

Numbers for this game were always going to be an issue given the game started only two days after the Melbourne Cup and opened on Oaks Day. It also came hot on the heels of the Rugby World Cup. Add into the equation the fact that a Test against the NZedders is never a great crowd puller and organisers were probably lucky to get the numbers they did on days one and two. Perhaps organisers need to reconsider the Thursday start to these games as this year even the support from corporates on Thursday was not at the usual level, although Friday seemed to still be strong.

Those who have the reins of the game certainly have some thinking to do and it will be interesting to see how the numbers stack up for the remaining Tests.

As the caravan of summer cricket wrapped up and headed to Adelaide for the inaugural day night Test many were asking if this is the direction the five day game should be taking.

Or is the long form of the game in jeopardy?

The new concept is great and the pink ball and the outcome will be scrutinised closely by administrators, players and fans.

The Kiwis have plenty of injury concerns as they head to the Adelaide Oval. The Aussies on the other hand look to be in good shape, however they have received a warning from their coach that in spite of their win there are plenty of areas that need improvement.

Mitchell Starc’s ball throwing brain snap was always going to cause him grief. Pegging the ball at an opposition batsman is not good form at any level of the game and he has received a healthy slap over the knuckles from the match committee and his captain. Hopefully like many of his counterparts before him he will put this indiscretion behind him and continue on to bigger and better things.

Despite this blip on the radar the highlight of the Gabba Test for me personally was the level of sportsmanship shown by both sides.

That gentleman, is cricket, and how the game should be played. Good to see.

- Casey CAN TRAVEL HAVE bowls will travel seems to be the motto at the Summit Bowls Club at the moment. Last weekend a contingent from the club was on the move again with two teams competing in the Texas Fours Carnival.

Unfortunately we cannot report that the group returned from Texas with a trophy but reports are that there were some good bowls played and the company was excellent. The winner from the weekend was a team which included several Toowoomba imports.

While the tourists were busy terrorising Texas back at the home base an enjoyable social game was underway. A 2-4-2 game of pairs saw Attilio Zamprogno and Keith Mungall take out a com-

This week Errol Moss, the club’s volunteer green keeper, retires from what has been a labour of love. Under his watch with the assistance of his willing band of co-volunteers (Ray, Zel Phil and Co.), the reputation of the Summit Greens has blossomed - now widely recognised as the premier greens in the district.

The committee and members would like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank Errol for all that he has done for the club and wish him all the best in the future.

CAREER BEST FOR WALKER A CAREER best performance from pace bowler Dave Walker steered Maryvale Condamine Cricket Club to a big win over Allora in last weekend’s game at Slade Park.

Allora won the toss and chose to bat first. As the opposition attack ripped through the batting line-up Captain Aaron Vietheer was questioning whether it was the right option.

Dave Walker was in sensational form and used his pace and the conditions to perfection as he decimated the opposition taking seven wickets and conceding only 25 runs in 10 overs.

Showing a preference for bowling from the southern end of the Slade wicket, Walker clean bowled five of his victims; had one caught and dismissed Jamie Saunders LBW with a beautiful delivery.

As the innings collapsed around him Nick Morris was 30 not out as Allora slumped to be all out for only 74.

The total was never going to be enough and it looked an easy task for Maryvale Condamine when they came to the wicket. Kevin Bourke top scored with 31 as they wrapped up another win but not before the loss of three wickets.

SHANNON OUTSCORES WINNING GROUP SIMON Shannon outscored the winners of the past 12 months medal rounds in Stanthorpe last Saturday to claim the Roy Carnell Memorial trophy. Shannon returned a score of nett 67 to take the honours for the day. The trophy is sponsored by the Carnell family in memory of the late Roy Carnell a very keen golfer and sportsman in Stanthorpe.

The ladies equivalent event, sponsored by Lifestyle Footwear, was won by Christine Welstead with a score of nett 71 for her round. Quali-

Rino Piovesan returned a great score of nett 64 to be three clear of runner-up, Simon Shannon. Dylan Barraclough returned a score of 71 to take the prize for lowest score off the stick.

Christine Welstead also won the day’s medal round for the ladies with Lyn Ludlow in second place with nett 76. Hannah Reeves returned lowest gross score for the ladies and on the day also collected the balls for least putts of 29 and both pin shots at 3/12 and 17. Poole’s Produce kindly sponsored the day.

Keith Barnett had a good day with his putter finishing with lowest putts of 24 for the men.

Dylan Barraclough added to his impressive collection of prizes winning the pin at 3/12, the birdies nest at 10 and the pro-pin at 1/10.

Tom Page held the pin at 17, Lyle Bryant collected the pro-pin at 9/18 and Mark Hendry the pro-pin at 5/14.

In the men’s event those with a score of 69 or better received a ball in the run down and the ladies to nett 78.

WILLIAMS COLLECTS MEDAL SCOTT Williams continued his impressive form with the stick last Saturday at the ‘Garra taking out the November Monthly Medal and Putting competition. third. Mick Ellis, Kevin Williams and Simon Blair all had pin shots on holes three, fifteen and nine respectively.

BUSY WEEK ON THE GREENS IN Association Croquet this weekend Joy Newman and Val Richardson were successful in their game against Effey Russell and Heather Widderick. The final score a convincing 26-16.

Pat Schnoor and partner Carol Verwey also had a 26-10 win over Margaret Dickenson and Andrea Denkewitz. Schnoor played well and had a break of five and two breaks of three in the game.

Numbers at Hoop Runners were solid last week. In the opening game Judy Lock, Elaine Brown and Bill Golding played well scoring 13 against the combination of Val Fancourt and Dianne Wren. Val Fancourt scored a great hole in one, Bill Golding managed a jump shot, and Judy Lock and Elaine Brown shared the honours - top scoring with six hoops apiece.

In the second game teams were drawn to play first to ten games. Bill, Val and Judy reached the ten score with Dianne and Elaine managing eight hoops. Judy Lock scored her first ever hole in one.

Bill also scored a hole in one and his second jump shot for the day. Val also had a jump shot and was the top scorer in this game with five hoops.

Gateball Players had extra sessions this week getting in plenty of practice for their tournament on Saturday 21 November. Recent games have all been fairly even and players are improving their tactics, which will be what wins the games.

Plenty of players currently bemoaning the fact that they should have paid better attention to chess games. Members of the public are invited to come along to watch the tournament games which they will find completely different to other games of croquet and very tactical.

PARTNERSHIP ENSURES WHEATVALE WIN WHEATVALE and Inglewood cricketers faced off at Slade Park on a slightly rain-affected wicket at on Saturday. Batting first, Wheatvale were made to work for their runs. A steady fall of early wickets saw them slump to 6/41 after only 13 overs. A defiant last wicket partnership between Ryan Collins and Will Dearden ensured the Wheatvale bowlers a defendable total when it was their turn at the crease. Chasing 173 Inglewood were all out for 158. Tim Sutton was their top batsman scoring 42.

Warwick East's November Fours Carnival Nominations Nominations close on Friday for the Fours Carnival which is offering $3300 in prize money. The carnival on 14 and 15 November. Prizes range from $900 for the first-placed team to $200 for 5th place, plus five round winning teams will take home $180 each. Nomination fees are $180 per team for five rounds and includes lunch on Saturday and Sunday and a barbecue dinner on Saturday evening before the twilight round.

Women’s teams, Mixed teams and Men’s teams entries are welcomed by 5pm on Friday 6 November. WALLACE RUMBLES THE winner of Friday’s nine hole Red Rooster Rumble was Greg Wallace who scored a respectable 22 points off a handicap of 14. Runner-up with 21 points after a countback was Bill Morrison. Run down balls went to Doug Wilson 21, and Dale Derrick, Rod Kilner and Rod Winterton (20). Don Warrener and Greg Wallace picked up the pins at five and seven respectively.

MAIDEN WIN FOR COLTS WARWICK Hotel Colts bowlers restricted their opponents Railway Hotel Rascals to a total of 129 last weekend and then chased down the total to pick up their first win this season. Colts bowlers Peterson and O’Leary each took three wickets.

Best of the Rascal’s batsmen were Paul Christensen (43) and Tom Morris (35).

In a good performance with the bat Colts openers, Maugan Ben (47) and Geoff Thorley (37) laid the platform for their side’s win.

FIRST OF THE MONTH THE start of another new month saw players contesting the November Monthly at the Warwick Golf Club on Saturday.
