Message from the Premier This week is Fire Action Week, a time for all Victorians to begin preparing for the summer ahead.

Fire Action Week is your opportunity to better understand the fire risk in your area, so talk to your family, friends and neighbours about your plans, and get prepared.

Last summer we saw fire conditions ease slightly in some areas of the state. While this was a welcome reprieve for many Victorians, the challenge now is to put fire planning back on the agenda.

This is particularly important given summer forecasts indicate

You don’t have to live in the country to be at risk. Fires can occur where suburbs meet the bush, or in urban areas where houses have grassland, bushland, or parkland around them.

This week is your opportunity to revisit your fire planning with the following actions: • Know where to check Fire Danger Ratings daily over summer • Have your emergency kit ready to go, and make sure you have a plan for pets or livestock

• Stay informed about warnings and updates • Know where you will go, what route to take, and have a back up if there’s already a fire in the area.

If you have recently moved into a high-risk area, make sure you understand how to prepare yourself and your property. Talk to your local community and CFA brigade to make sure you are equipped with the information you need.

Remember, it is up to you to understand your risk and keep informed. Leaving a high-risk bushfire area early remains the safest option.

Emergency Management Commissioner, Craig Lapsley, said the week was a great chance for Victorians to understand the risk where they live and put plans in place to stay safe during the summer months.

“Right now, forecasts show that there is potential for a long, hot, dry summer in Victoria,” Mr Lapsley said.

“Fire Action Week is a great time to increase your understanding of the fire risk where you live, prepare your property, and talk to your family and friends about what you’ll do if a fire starts.”

Mr Lapsley said that making informed decisions about what to do before a fire started was vital to stay safe during the summer.

“Now is the best time to understand your fire risk and get prepared,

not when a fire starts,” Mr Lapsley said.

“This week, talk to your family, friends and to your neighbours about the fire risk where you live and make plans for what you’ll do on hot, dry, windy days.

“Make sure you know where to check Fire Danger Ratings.

“Over summer, you’ll need to check the ratings daily to understand your fire risk.

“If the Fire Danger Rating is Severe, Extreme or Code Red, you’re risking your life if you don’t take action.”

In the lead-up to summer, CFA brigades around the state are getting out and about in their community to talk about preparing for fire.

Prepare now for summer storms WITH hot weather already here, electricity distributor AusNet Services is urging property owners to clear vegetation from private powerlines to reduce the likelihood of summer storms causing power outages.

AusNet Services’ Regional Customer and Community Manager, Leesa Penaluna, said that despite the company’s large vegetation management program, keeping powerlines clear was a responsibility shared between electricity businesses and community members.

Residents need to keep vegetation on their property clear of their service cable or private electric lines.

“We spend more than $40 million on our annual vegetation management program inspecting and then clearing about 135,000 trees from 50,000 kilometres of powerlines throughout our network to ensure safe and reliable supply of electricity to customers,” Mrs Penaluna said.

“Importantly, property owners also have a responsibility to keep vegetation clear from their service cable or private electric lines supplying their property.

“Summer storms bring strong winds and heavy rains, so now is a good time to clear vegetation and reduce the potential for property damage and power outages.

“Under no circumstances should property owners attempt to climb a power pole or prune vegetation near a powerline.

“Please contact a suitably trained and experienced contractor to carry out the clearing work.”

To help you manage summer storms and possible power outages, AusNet Services suggests you: Have emergency contact details easily available; Have a fully charged torch with fresh batteries and a battery-operated radio; Ensure mobile phones are fully charged; If your garbage door is electric, ensure you know how to open it manually; Have a back-up pump if you rely on mains electricity for your water supply; Time permitting, turn your fridge and freezer to a cooler setting to maintain food freshness.

During or after a storm, property owners are encouraged to report threatening trees or damaged powerlines to AusNet Services’ 24-hour faults hotline on 13 17 99.

“When property owners provide accurate and timely information, we are able to pinpoint threatening tree locations and damaged powerlines and send crews directly to those locations,” she added.

AusNet Services advise people to keep well away of fallen powerlines at all times and report it immediately to the 24-hour faults hotline.

Video fire fight

by Warburton Emergency Planning Group is just one initiative that aims to ensure that Warburton residents are well prepared for the coming fire season.

WEPG spokesperson Kevin Bargar, said the film was one of a number of initiatives the group had been working on over the past year and was available on the group’s websitewww.warburtonemergency.org.au.

The film, Warburton Bushfire Preparedness and Awareness, is produced locally by the group in collaboration with film-maker, Peter Downey.

It aims to present information that addresses the unique local bushfire situation for Warburton residents, highlights the need for people to be prepared and enforces the CFA message ‘Leave and

Live’. A meeting hosted by the group at Warburton CFA on Thursday last week brought together representatives of all the players involved in bushfire and emergency services ahead of this bushfire season with the aim of planning for community responses to emergency scenarios and providing the very best information and strategies for the Warburton communities.

Mr Bargar said the meeting was attended by representatives across the board including Victoria Police, Parks Victoria, DELWP, CFA, Yarra Ranges Council, SES, Warburton Valley CEDA (tourism and economic development group) along with WEPG members.

“This meeting was a continuation of previous discussions aimed at trying to provide people with technical information about what to expect and what to do in the case of a bushfire,” he said.

“It addressed aspects unique and germane to Warburton that people need to think about.”

Some of the issues the group is working on include the need for a repeater tower on Mount Victoria to ensure access to the ABC warnings and updates and the provision of a fire rating sign for Warburton.

Two meetings have been scheduled, the first a Fire Danger Period Information Night on Wednesday, 25 November at the Warburton fire station.

The second, on Saturday, 5 December will be a Bushfire Planning Session at the East Warburton Fire Refuge.

Details of both these meetings and a future Bushfire Scenario Meeting proposed for January will be available on the Warburton CFA facebook page.

MANY residents in rural areas are recognising that in a bushfire situation, help from a rural fire brigade or even from neighbours is no guarantee.

So, protecting a property is increasingly a matter of looking after the protection of your own assets.

Most firefighting authorities like the CFA recommend the preparation of a personal fire plan including the appropriate materials, especially if there is a decision to stay with the property.

Many property owners will have a water source available in the form of a swimming pool, rainwater tanks, water courses, dams or similar reserves.

In this instance, a Blaze Control Pump Kit - utilising a Davey Firefighter engine powered pump with an inlet and outlet hose kit - represents a relatively inexpensive investment.

This set-up will usually afford the means to extinguish embers, spot fires or even burning vegetation, particularly after a fire-front has passed.

KNOWING where your nearest community safe place is could save your life during a catastrophic bushfire event.

A community safer place is a designated open area away from vegetation and tested for radiant heat levels that members of a community can utilise to escape a bushfire as a last resort measure.

It is always the best practise to have a fire plan in place, leave early and distance yourself and your family from the danger of a bushfire.

If a fire plan does unfortunately fail, heading to your nearest community safer place could be the only way to save lives.

Keep your property clear

Thinking first SOME of the most problematic bushfires this season will be caused by ordinary people going about their business, according to detectives from the Victoria Police Arson and Explosives squad.

Activities such as anglegrinding, operating farming machinery, disposing of cigarette butts, and leaving campfires unattended have the potential to become out of control fires that destroy lives and communities.

Detective Inspector Michael Roberts said many people didn’t realise that during high fire danger periods these activities could easily spark a fire.

“These activities can be considered criminal offences which we take very seriously and carry severe penalties,” Det Insp Roberts said.

“The reality is that a fire, whether recklessly or accidentally lit, has the very real potential to damage property, to injure and to kill.

“This season, we’re asking people to be mindful of the consequences of their actions.

“For example, re-think the need to operate machinery on a high fire danger day, dispose of cigarettes appropriately and in a safe manner, and extinguish your campfire properly if leaving the campsite.

“Know the restrictions and be accountable to them.

You never know when you may need them, or they may need you.

So it’s important to consider the ease with which tankers and firefighting crews can navigate around your house, particularly if you have a large property, in the event of an emergency.

This point was never clearer than after a recent incident in Wesburn, where CFA crews found access particularly difficult and could have easily resulted in a tragedy.

Twelve CFA firetrucks attended a Wesburn house in the early hours of Thursday, 15 October; and on arrival, firefighters found the house fully alight and a man trapped inside.

The man was eventually taken via ambulance to Maroondah Hospital with minor burns, while the house, a shed and four cars were destroyed in the fire.

Though a terrible incident, it could’ve been much worse, with CFA firefighters battling poor access and heavy fuelloads around the property, including numerous gas bottles which were exploding.

Brian Halit from MilgroveWesburn CFA was on the scene and said residents simply must ensure clear access.

Last year, police charged 39 people for deliberately lighting a bushfire, a number that has been increasing over the past three years.

Seven people were also charged for recklessly causing a bushfire.

“It’s a combination of better police investigation and a zero tolerance approach,” Det Insp Roberts said.

“The charge for recklessly or intentionally causing a bushfire is up to 15 years’ imprisonment, while lighting a fire on a total fire ban day carries a penalty of $35,000 and up to two years’ jail.”

Ready for hot time

By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Glen CFA Captain, Bill Boyd, is asking residents to get ready for a hot and dry fire season, as fire brigades prepare for potential Code Red days.

Capt Boyd, speaking with the Mail last month, said that crews were preparing for “a hot one”, following hot weather early in October and a taste of the coming season with the runaway Lancefield fire.

“I was over in Lancefield last week, and certainly the bush is drying out,” he said.

“We’re all feeling that it’s going to be an early season and a long season - El Nino is coming down and we’ve been warned it’s going to be a hot one.”

To mark that early start, Capt Boyd said crews were in pre-season preparation, honing their skills and practicing, to ensure they were ready when the worst of the season hit.

The worst may be on the cards, he said, with talk of potential Code Red days coming up when the summer heat peaks.

According to the CFA, a Fire Danger Rating (FDR) of Code Red indicates the worst conditions for bush and grass fires.

“Homes are not designed or constructed to withstand fires in these conditions,” the CFA’s website reads.

“The safest place to be is away from high risk bushfire areas.”

Capt Boyd said the Yarra Ranges was in a similar state leading up to this year’s season as it was last year, but that growth and drying out could pose a higher risk.

“Now’s the time for people to get property works happening,” he said.

He said residents should also ensure that driveways are accessible for fire trucks, which are three metres wide, three metres tall and eight metres long, and that water sources, such as dams or water tanks, are accessible for fire-fighters.

Residents who live in isolated areas and areas of surrounding bushland are at high risk during the bushfire season and may wish to consider the installation of a bushfire shelter.

By PETER DOUGLAS THOSE considering investing in a personal fire bunker need to ask themselves the right questions and do their own homework, according to CSIRO scientist Justin Leonard.

Leonard addressed an attentive crowd of more than 100 at a community information session, hosted by the Olinda CFA at the Olinda Hall on Wednesday, 21 October.

The scientist has devoted countless hours to researching not only the safety and efficacy of fire bunkers, but also gathering statistics from the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires.

Olinda Brigade Community Safety Co-ordinator, Elissa Jans, who helped to co-ordinate the event, said the safety-conscious audience responded positively.

“Justin’s address covered many topical issues surrounding bunkers,” she said.

“These included where to build them, when to enter them and who should consider investing in one.

“People need to consider the psychology behind it, the confined spaces, whether they could cope.

“There are many questions you need to ask yourself, as well as a need to conduct your own research.”

Ms Jans said one of the key messages of the night was that bunkers should not be included in your fire plan, but simply another tool that homeowners could consider.

Bunkers are not recommended as a replacement for traditional bushfire preparation.

Some of the questions the information session sought to address included how long would the air last, what really happened inside and when should occupants come out?

Ms Jans said it wasn’t merely a case of plonking a bunker on your property.

“It’s important they are not located anywhere near vegetation, or near trees that may burn and branches may fall and block entry,” she said.

“Ventilation and the potential for

psychological impact should be a strong consideration.”

Ms Jans said it was also important there were no combustible items near bunkers, such as chemicals or vehicles.

But she said the main message of the night was to stay informed and do your own research.

By completing the online declaration, Victorians not only make a commitment to their own fire safety, but can also support their nominated CFA brigades.

To take the pledge, members of the public simply select the fire safety actions they plan to take to better prepare for the threat of fire this summer.

General actions people can opt to take range from checking the local Fire Danger Rating each day, searching for information and warnings about fires on hot days, or talking with friends and family about fire risks.

People are also required to make a pledge about actions they plan to take around the home, such as testing smoke alarms monthly and changing smoke alarms batteries each year.

CFA is also asking participants to select a local brigade they wish to support, placing that brigade in a pool to win one of three $1000 cash prizes.

The money will be used by CFA volunteers and staff to purchase additional equipment to help protect lives and property.

Winning brigades will be chosen from three categories: the brigade with the highest total number of pledges, the brigade with the highest number of pledges per capita, and the brigade with the highest number of pledges in a town with a population of less than 100 people.

Members of the public could also win one of five $200 Bunnings vouchers as an added incentive to join the cause.

CFA hopes the Pledge will increase awareness of the risk of fire.

Room to move Deputy Premier and Minister for Education James Merlino paid a visit to Emerald Secondary College last week to discuss with staff the use of $1.5 million provided to the school in the state budget.

The money will be used to modernise and extend a room currently used for storage so the school has an updated and centralised centre for their integration program. Emerald Secondary College will have 60 students enrolled in the program in total next year and principle Jodie Doble said the new building would make a huge difference.

“We really need that extra space,” she said. “Programs will all be run the same way they are now, but in a cohesive central space.”

$20m cash boost THE Angliss Hospital has received a $20 million funds injection which will see an intensive care unit and shortstay unit built as early as next year.

The Victorian Government commitment will see 20 beds created, providing for patients needing urgent care.

The new ICU will enable the hospital to provide the latest technology to treat heart attacks, strokes, severe infections, organ failure and complications resulting from surgery.

Angliss Hospital Chief of Clinical and Site Operations, Ben Kelly, said the health service was grateful for the

government’s commitment and continued support.

“Work on an intensive care unit and emergency short-stay unit at Angliss Hospital is at the planning and design stage,” he said.

“We are very excited about delivering this project, and look forward to further enhancing the level of care we provide to patients in the region.”

To mark the announcement, Deputy Premier James Merlino and Minister for Health Jill Hennessy visited the hospital on Friday, 30 October.

Mr Merlino and Ms Hennessy, along with nurses and midwives from

Angliss Hospital, celebrated the announcement, which they said was a landmark occasion to guarantee minimum numbers of nurses and midwives to care for Victorian patients.

Mr Kelly said as well as discussing the bright future ahead, the visit by the senior state politicians also provided a chance to showcase the hospital’s additional services, such as maternity, day surgery and community rehabilitation.

“Minister Hennessy and Deputy Premier Merlino also met our patients and dedicated staff, who are what makes the Angliss Hospital such an important part of the local community,” he said.

Mr Merlino said the Labor Government recognised the importance of nurse and midwife-to-patient ratios in ensuring patients receive world-class health and had recently announced The ‘Safe Patient Care’ (nurse-to-patient and midwife-to-patient ratios) Bill 2015.

He said this would ensure quality care and better outcomes for patients.

“Worldwide evidence shows a direct correlation between nursing staffing levels and better nursing related patient outcomes, such as reduced falls and pressure ulcers,” he said.

affairs James Merlino MP Member for Monbulk THE Andrews Labor Government’s recent announcement that it would re-open Lilydale TAFE was undoubtedly one of the proudest moments of my political career, and I would like to pay tribute to those within our community who campaigned so passionately on this issue.

The former Liberal Government’s unprecedented cuts to TAFE forced the campus to close its doors and we were determined that if elected, we would rebuild vocational training and higher education in the east.

Thousands of local residents got behind our campaign which included petitions, floods of emails, stickers on cars, protests and countless visits to my electorate office by concerned residents.

The former Liberal Government’s decision inspired an unprecedented reaction within our community and I particularly like to recognise Amie Watson, a former student of Swinburne who led the student campaign to re-open this important facility.

It was my privilege to work closely with Amie and every single one of you who stood against this closure.

I would also like to recognise the efforts of Minister for Training and Skills, Steve Herbert, and Premier Daniel Andrews who joined our campaign and were integral in achieving this outcome.

This shows what can be achieved when we unite for a common goal and use our collective voices to fight for what we believe in.

I am proud that my local community stood up and fought against this decision, without you we would not be re-opening this campus in 2016.

Bushland blaze beat MORE than a dozen fire trucks fought a fire that broke out in heavily-vegetated bushland in David Hill Road, Monbulk, on Wednesday (28 October).

Monbulk Police have said the blaze started from a burn-off at a private property behind Rankins Road, which started about 2.50pm.

The fire grew to three hectares and according to a CFA spokesperson, a semi-trailer was “fully involved“and destroyed in the blaze.

A Watch and Act warning for the surrounding areas, near Monbulk-Emerald Road, was issued but downgraded to an Advice Warning by 5pm where 22 fire vehicles remained at the scene.

“We hit the fire hard and fast.

Thanks to the great work by crews at the scene in gaining control of the fire,” Duty Officer Colin Brown said.

The spokesperson said crews from Silvan, Clematis and Kallista, among others, were at the scene, to help get the fire under control before homes were threatened.

In a fire event, residents are asked to monitor conditions at www.emergency. vic.gov.au, via ABC Local Radio or by calling the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.

Caution plea after crashes

Widow saddened by tractor thieves A YELLINGBO widow has been left devastated after two tractors that belonged to her late husband were stolen from a property last week.

Sometime between Friday 23 Octo-

ber and Thursday 29 October, a shed was broken into, with locks cut and a door forced open.

Two tractors and a generator were stolen.

It is believed the thieves knew the

contents in the shed and thought they must have had a truck and trailer available.

A blue New Holland lawn tractor with a four-in-one bucket and an orange Daedong with a four-in-one

bucket were stolen.

A 7kv petrol generator was also taken.

Grant helps museum keep up with the times

Car fire: residents evacuated A CAR was destroyed in a fire near Tecoma McDonald’s over the weekend, with residents evacuated in case of an explosion.

Police said the car caught fire about 8.15am on Sunday 1 November, near the fast food outlet, after its driver was smoking in the vehicle.

Police believe a lit cigarette caused the fire, and residents were evacuated from the area as a precaution, in case the car exploded.

There was no damage to surrounding properties, and police have labelled the incident as an accident.

EMERALD police attended a number of crashes around the Hills in the past week, and are urging drivers to be careful in the changing weather conditions.

At 6.44am on 31 October, a car travelling north on Kooweerup/Healesville Road, Cockatoo, veered onto the south side of the road and crashed into a BDouble truck.

The truck driver took evasive action, but the vehicle sustained serious damage when it hit the road barrier.

The car was destroyed, and its 18-year-old driver, a Kooweerup woman, was taken to The Alfred hospital is a non-critical but serious condition while the truck driver received no serious injuries.

One the same day at 12.30pm, a driver lost control on Paternoster Road, Cockatoo, and collided head-on with another vehicle.

Police attributed the loss of control to the poor condition of the road surface and oil on road.

Each car was occupied by a driver and passenger, but no one sustained any injuries.

Furlong force for Cup Day POLICE will be taking to the valley over Melbourne Cup Day to enforce road rules as part of Operation Furlong, with officers encouraging drivers to take it easy over the long weekend.

Warburton Police Sergeant, Tom Wilkinson, said police would be out on the roads on Tuesday 3 November for the end of Operation Furlong, which runs over the Cup Day long weekend.

The aim of the operation, Sgt Wilkinson said, was to raise awareness of road safety, and target those who were doing the wrong thing.

By PETER DOUGLAS RENOWNED country singer-songwriter Kasey Chambers will later this month deliver her uniquely Australian music to the region.

Fresh from the release of her 10th studio album, ‘Bittersweet’, Chambers will perform a mix of her old and new hits at the York on Lilydale at a one-off show on Friday 13 November.

For the uninitiated, Chambers is country music royalty.

The daughter of singer and musician, Bill Chambers, Kasey shot to popularity after singing in the family band, The Dead Ringer Band, before releasing a string of hits in the early 2000s.

Chambers told the Mail she was exceptionally proud of her new album.

“After releasing so many albums, you’re not sure if people still want to listen, but the reception has been fantastic,” she said.

SO, it seems former Australian treasurer Joe Hockey’s retirement from politics has caught the attention of the Mail’s resident cartoonist, Danny Zemp. Mr Hockey is widely tipped to take on a role as Ambassador to the United States.

“I’ve just finished touring the US, which I do every year, and this was one of the best I’ve done.

“I feel like the audiences connect (with the new album) on a different level.”

‘Bittersweet’ is Chambers’ first full-length album in four years, a period that has been tumultuous for the singer due to a marriage breakup and the birth of her third child.

Chambers said these events had inspired some elements of the new album.

Though, the release is just more than a cathartic experience, with a completely new direction in the production stage.

Powderfinger front-man Bernard Fanning and his producer friend Nick DiDia (Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen and Powderfinger) came on board.

Chambers said it took her music in a whole different direction.

Crimson Peak Starring Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain Rated MA15+ for strong, bloody violence CRIMSON Peak is a sumptuous, eerie gothic romance film

by Mexican macabre master Guillermo del Toro.

In the late Victorian era, young author Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) is romanced by the dashing inventor Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston). They swiftly marry, but Edith soon uncovers a dark secret about Sharpe and his home of Allerdale Hall.

The plot is slightly contrived, in that it wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have progressed if certain characters had disposed of or acted upon convenient information.

But if you can get past this clumsy set-up, Wasikowskaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s somewhat flat leading performance and the scarcity of the ghosts (after their prominence in the misleading trailers), Crimson Peak is a disquieting slow-burner about love and depravity among the living.

As with all of del Toroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s films, the art direction is staggering, full of rich colours, beautiful costumes and gruesomely grandiose imagery.

The pacing moves steadily and maintains a deeply unnerving atmosphere of helplessness and distrust; the villainsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; intentions are clear from the beginning, but they are still allowed an impressive level of nuance.

Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain (as Sharpeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sister Lucille) steal the show, and Chastain (without spoiling anything) is terrifyingly driven and unhinged later in the film.

Though it falters in the story department, Crimson Peak thrills and chills with its vivid atmosphere and great performances.

Soggy Marsh beats back the elements

By JAMIE STRUDLEY YARRA Ranges Athletics held the latest round of the Little Athletics season under lights last Friday night.

A fantastic turnout of athletes enjoyed the excellent conditions with numerous PBs and a few club records.

A small group of senior athletes travelled to Casey Fields on Saturday afternoon for Round 3 of the AV Shield.

Despite the inability to compete in several field events due to field maximums, some excellent performances by all our athletes resulted in very good team placings.

Many of our club athletes competed at the Victorian Primary School Track and Field Championships last week.

After some exhaustive qualifying competitions over the past few weeks, primary school athletes competed for state titles and the opportunity to represent Victoria at the Australian Primary School Track and Field Championships.

Congratulations to Kiara Flavel and Maddie Laven for being selected to compete at the Australian Championships.

Monbulk First XI has enjoyed a solid start to the cricket season.

Back-to-back Twenty20 wins notched up THE Monbulk 1st XI was back on the winners’ list with two Twenty20 wins this week.

They defeated Knox Gardens on Tuesday night in the opening match of this competition.

They then backed it up on Saturday in an exciting match against Belgrave, which came down to the last ball.

Skipper Shane Cosstick opened the batting making a magnificent 65 be-

fore bowling the crucial last over.

This topped off a great week for Cosstick, who took four wickets and made runs in Tuesday’s Twenty20.

In a new exciting format, the 2nd XI also played a Twenty20 before the 1st XI on Saturday, which made for a great day.

There were no other senior or junior matches this weekend due to the Melbourne Cup weekend.

All teams are back on board next weekend including our two new Under 10s teams as well as the first Milo in2cricket session.

Twenty20 is a first

By STEVE BROWN FTGDCA FOR the first time, the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association played a Twenty20 fixture for premiership points during the Melbourne Cup weekend.

The concept of playing the Second X1 matches as a curtain-raiser to the main game was voted by the club delegates earlier in the year.

Although clubs enjoyed a successful day, there appeared to be many players and spectators who favoured traditional cricket.

The closest game of the round occurred at Monbulk where the home side posted 4/124 with skipper Shane Cosstick leading the charge with a fine 65.

In the run chase, Belgrave appeared to be in the box seat, requiring 12 runs to win off the last over with wickets in hand until Cosstick took the ball.

Belgrave’s Luke Manion was at the crease needing 3 runs to win

from the final delivery when Cosstick beat the bat and the ball sailed through to keeper Billy Hicken for a dot ball and the Magpies went down by just two runs.

Upwey Tecoma defeated Ferntree Gully by 21 runs as Chris Jewell helped set up the winners total with 42.

For the Gully, wicketkeeper Jayden Bradbury’s 49 was not enough to secure the win.

Upwey all-rounder Jake Evans bowled tidily for a return of 3/14.

Knoxfield continued their run of wins this time at the expense of Eildon Park by three wickets.

Adam Maloney top scored for the Knights with 41 and Mitchell Perry had great figures of 4/13 with the ball.

The Basin opened their account for the season, defeating Mountain Gate in convincing style.

Jake Best (37) and Danny Rundle (33) set the tone and 144 was too many for the Gators and they crawled to 8/94. Sean Ryan hit the

spot with 3/12 for the Bears. Batting first, Knox Gardens compiled 6/121 at home to Johnson Park but when openers Bryn Gaunt and Steve Devenish (32) took 51 from the first eight overs the pressure was released and the Sharks hit the lead in the 18th over. Gaunt remained unbeaten on 53.

The Gully competition will also play another Twenty20 fixture in the first game after the Christmas break.
