He later confirmed he had also provided them to the inspectorate.

Sonia Heath from the Department of Premier and Cabinet confirmed the inspectorate was examining the complaints.

After the meeting Cr Brown said his desire to be the next Greater Dandenong mayor had not motivated his decision to make the accusations.

“It has caused me a lot of heartache for months,” he said.

Cr Brown phrased his allegations as a question to Cr Chea, which Cr Chea opted to take on notice and respond to at a later date.

He told the Journal that Cr Brown’s allegations were baseless and his behaviour was unacceptable.

gifts “SUBSTANTIAL of cash” have been given to a Greater Dandenong councillor without being declared, a fellow councillor has alleged.

Councillor Peter Brown claimed at the Monday 26 October council meeting that he had uncovered documents showing his colleague Youhorn Chea had received money from Springvale Asian Business Association (SABA) committee members.

Cr Brown also highlighted Cr Chea’s involvement earlier this year in opposing council plans for parking meters in Springvale - alongside SABA. “He should have declared a conflict of interest,” Cr Brown said.

He said “scurrilous accusations“ from SABA against the council regarding the parking meter project had prompted him to start “investigating” several months ago.

“Our officers were unable to defend themselves,” he said.

He said Cr Chea should have defended the council but instead sided with SABA and, through the Journal, threatened to withdraw his support for Mayor Sean O’Reilly at the next local government election after the mayor defended the meters.

Cr Brown told the meeting that the documentation he had uncovered was “incontrovertible”.

He later said the documents had been provided to the local government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate.

Pipe dream flops for library burglar

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AN ICE-addicted man has been jailed for looting copper tubing during several commercial burglaries including at the since-demolished former Dandenong Library.

Mathew Leigh Horsfield, 34, of Cranbourne, had pleaded guilty at a court hearing on 25 October to the burglaries including an attempted theft of copper from a Drouin factory while staff were in the office.

Three days after being placed on bail for other burglaries, Horsfield had driven with a co-accused to the rear of the Drouin premises about 7.15am in September, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told.

Horsfield’s other charges included stealing about 100 kilograms of

copper tubing through the roof cavity of the abandoned Dandenong Library site on 21 July.

His escape in a rented van was blocked by workers at the demolition site about 7.30am.

Horsfield tried to drive around the workers’ vehicle but crashed into it and caused “considerable damage” to both.

He also faced charges including six other commercial burglaries and thefts, ice possession, drink driving, unlicensed driving, driving without an interlock device and failing to appear on bail.

Horsfield’s lawyer told the court that the burglaries were fuelled by the accused’s ice addiction - which was in turn linked to a diagnosed major depressive disorder.

The depression would cause any further incarceration to “weigh heavily” on Horsfield, the lawyer said.

The lawyer said Horsfield had already spent considerable time in lockdown at Melbourne Remand Centre and Dandenong police cells, including 23 hour days in his cell by himself.

Magistrate Barry Schultz, who had bailed Horsfield last month, said the accused did not appear to have insight into his offending.

“Where Mr Horsfield has blotted his copy book is that a lot of these issues were raised (at the bail hearing).

“And three days later it’s gone on again.”

He said he was not confident that

Horsfield would engage with a community corrections order, though jail was not necessarily the answer either.

“Ice is a dreadful drug and because of that I have the community to protect.

“I certainly take into account that imprisonment is more onerous on Mr Horsfield but he’s really reached the end of the line this time.”

Horsfield was sentenced to 15 months’ jail with a “very merciful” six-month non-parole period, including 72 days already served in pre-sentence detention.

He was disqualified from driving for 14 months and fined $1000 on the driving matters.

THERE’S little sign that recent-centenarian Dorrit Blaze’s fires are dimming.

At her 100th birthday party on 28 October, a beaming Ms Blaze was feted as someone who is still active with her church and the organiser of annual Christmas carols at her home at Valley Village Mews retirement village in Dandenong.

Ms Blaze has been a resident at the village since it opened, telling attendees it had been a “lovely place” to have lived in for the past 28 years.

She lives independently, with a little help from a carer.

Cr Chea said he’d earned his standing in the community through hard work since migrating to Australia in 1982.

“Our residents know that I am a clean person and I demand Cr Peter Brown to produce evidence to prove that I was wrong,” he said.

CR Tak strongly and completely rejected any allegation of wrongdoing.

He said he met with Cr Brown on Sunday 25 October to discuss the coming mayoral election, and he believed the allegations against him were linked to Cr Brown’s mayoral ambitions.

He said Cr Brown had accused him of failing to disclose a conflict of interest in relation to the Cambodian Association of Victoria (CAV) “on the basis that I am a member of CAV and because my wife’s uncle is a board member of CAV”.

Cr Tak said he was a CAV member in 2009 but had not since renewed his membership.

“Even if I was a member of CAV, membership of an organisation does not amount to a conflict of interest under the Act,” he said.

He said his wife’s uncle had never been a CAV board member but if he had “this would not amount to a conflict of interest under the Act”.

Springvale Asian Business Association (SABA) spokesman Stan Chang said he did not know the specific ‘gifts’ Cr Brown referred to.

“I’m 100 per cent confident that this is a storm in a teacup,” he said.

“I can only say that we would not give Cr Chea money for his personal use.

“It must be a fund-raising event.

“If Peter Brown raises it as an issue, it becomes a council matter.”

The council’s acting corporate services director Kylie Sprague said the council was not in a position to respond and it was a matter between the councillors.

Count on Transylvania's taste sensation

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE only horror within the chillingly-titled Cafe Transylvania is that few people seem to appreciate its hand-made Romanian sausages, cabbage rolls and cakes.

Let’s just first dwell on the cakes at this new and unique Hallam eatery.

They do justice to the lofty reputation of Eastern European cakes which are rarely found in this part of the world.

The profiterole is unimaginably delicious - an artfully constructed slice of soft eclair, vanilla custard and thick chocolate layers.

There’s the cozonaci, a sweet loaf like a panattoni filled with walnut, Turkish delight, vanilla and lemon zest.

Chef and co-proprietor Ionela Maroti said she scanned far and wide for such sweets when she and husband Ion migrated to Hampton Park 11 years ago.

“There were just so many sweets in Romania that I missed. I didn’t enjoy the cakes here.”

Ionela’s passion and exacting dedication to her cookery is ignited by her grandmother Elizabeta.

The wafting odours from her grandmother’s backyard bread oven on the outskirts of a Romanian village linger in Ionela’s memory.

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL Her nostalgia is clear about snow creaking underfoot, spring flowers on trees and the rustling of the surrounding hornbeam forest.

The cafe name is itself nostalgic - a tribute to her and Ion’s grandparents, and Ion’s birthplace Transylvania.

The cevapi and other handmade sausages served at Café Transylvania are authentic replicas of what was served at Elizabeta’s little home as are the incredible cabbage rolls filled with Romanian thyme, sauerkraut, pork and rice.

“I’m proud that we’re making our own stuff.

Everything has to be fresh and made on the premises,” Ionela said.

“We don’t want to be doing something that everyone else is doing.”

Finding a home for the valuable records of the Berwick Historical Society is a problem for which the shire council still seeks a solution.

The Society's present head quarters are in the old police station, but its tenure will be short because of ambulance plans.

Bash death A HALLAM mother of four has been jailed for four years after bashing her Noble Park landlord to death in his own home.

Kristy Robb, 28, was on 25 September convicted of the manslaughter of Alan Matthews, 69, on 30 January last year.

Justice Jack Rush on Wednesday 28 October sentenced her to four years in jail with a two and a half year nonparole period.

The judge said Robb rented a bungalow at the rear of Mr Matthews’ Henry Street property for “a matter of days” in January last year.

Justice Rush said Mr Matthews “claimed you owed him rent and, as a consequence of this, he retained some of your property”.

Robb shared a bottle of vodka and two to three cannabis joints with her boyfriend Gino Rachele, 42, before attending Mr Matthews’ property about 2.45am on 30 January to retrieve school uniform items for her children.

Justice Rush accepted the timing was to avoid Mr Mat-

thews and “there was no planning in your actions”.

Mr Matthews heard Robb and Rachele break into the bungalow and confronted Robb in the lounge room.

They argued and fought before Rachele grabbed the victim from behind and took him to the floor.

Robb left the property and Rachele soon followed.

Mr Matthews suffered several lacerations to his head and a fractured sternum, called triple zero at 2.53am and stated he had been “bashed by a woman and a bloke".

Police found him dead in his bathroom at 3.32am.

Justice Rush said Mr Matthews “suffered cardiac arrest as a consequence of the stress of the assaults and potentially from loss of blood".

He said the injuries from Robb’s assault were not in themselves life-threatening, plus there was evidence that Rachele played a greater role in Mr Matthews’ injuries than he admitted at trial.

“I am not satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that you are responsible for the fractured sternum,” he told Robb.

Justice Rush said Robb had a “tumultuous upbringing”.

Forensic psychologist Pamela Matthews diagnosed her with partial post-traumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder.

“It was her view that your outbursts of volatile anger, anxiety and distress arising from this mental condition were significant contributing factors of your offending,” Justice Rush said.

Robb has prior convictions for theft, threats to kill, assault and resisting police and has four children, including fourmonth-old Alexander.

“Your prospects of rehabilitation are reasonably strong, but they are highly dependent upon and strengthened if you were to be granted continued custody of Alexander,” Justice Rush said.

He took into account Robb’s recent attendance at an anger management course and drug and alcohol counselling in reaching his sentence.

Rachele was on 3 September sentenced to a one-year community corrections order after pleading guilty to one charge of recklessly causing injury and false imprisonment.

Teen killed crossing bypass

By CASEY NEILL A 16-YEAR-OLD girl has been struck and killed by a car in Dandenong South and a motorcyclist is in a critical condition following a collision in Bangholme.

Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Scott Roberts said the Dandenong South teen crossed the Dandenong Bypass, just west of Hammond Road, in front of a west-bound vehicle about 9pm on Wednesday 28 October.

“She was pronounced dead

at the scene,” he said.

“It’s being looked into.

“It doesn’t appear that there’s any fault on the part of the driver at this point.”

Sen Sgt Roberts said a motorcyclist from Cranbourne West lost control on Worsley Road, Bangholme, and collided with a car about 7.45am on Thursday 29 October.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the motorcyclist suffered serious head and chest injuries.

He received a blood transfu-

sion using blood carried on the air ambulance helicopter and was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.

Sen Sgt Roberts said officers were investigating the cause of the crash.

“It’s been a bad 12 to 15 hours in Greater Dandenong,” he said.

“We’d had three deaths on the road up this year up until last night.

“Now we’re at four. We’re really hoping that doesn’t go to five.”

AN ACCUSED’S ordeal with handcuffs was enough to unruffle a Dandenong magistrate.

The accused, who represented himself during a bail application, explained to the court how he had been handcuffed in custody - and how he used those handcuffs to tear open a delicate part of his nether regions.

Upon rejecting the bail attempt, the judge adjourned - with the off-the-cuff remark: “Blood-curdling story about the handcuffs.”

Nick Wakeling popped into the office last week, apologising for not calling to warn he’d arrive a few minutes late.

His newly-replaced phone touch screen had thrown in the towel, leaving him unable to make calls - or find his way to his next appointment.

Luckily the Star team was able to fill him in on the best route from Pakenham to Bayles.

Mr Wakeling’s assistant called the Star office to check on him when she was unable to reach him on his mobile, and later advised he’d reached out to her using iPhone personal assistant Siri.

Mr Wakeling also revealed that his father used to regularly appear in the Dandenong Journal during the 1970s.

AN ACCUSED drug trafficker was under capsicum-spray armed guard as he unsuccessfully applied for bail in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

A teary and red-eyed Shane Cochrane of Bayswater was flanked by three police officers while in the dock as he made an in-person bail application after being arrested at the Sandown Hotel on 26 October.

One of the officers held a can of capsicum spray as she stood next to the seated Cochrane.

Police alleged in court that Cochrane had been found playing pokies with his family inside Sandown Hotel earlier that day.

They had tracked him to a Toyota Soarer coupe he had been driving which was found in the car park earlier that day about 1.44am.

CCTV footage confirmed that Cochrane had parked the car, in which police found about 500 mL of GHB in a plastic bottle in the drivers’ footwell.

Also inside was a black bumbag containing three ziplock bags with about 11 grams of methamphetamine, police alleged.

Police seized the suspected drugs as well as $854 cash in Cochrane’s wallet and scales on the car’s centre console, the court was told.

He allegedly made full admissions to police about possessing the GHB, driving while suspended and driving an unregistered vehicle but denied he was trafficking.

Cochrane also allegedly told police that he had installed number plates from a similar make and model car on the coupe, and had used drugs an hour before driving to Sandown.

He described consuming 32 mL of GHB and 1.3 grams of ice a day, the court was told.

Cochrane was on bail at the time awaiting trial for other drug trafficking and possession charges at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court.

When asked to make his submission on 26 October, Cochrane said he’d “lost everything”.

“The world’s come to an end.”

Cochrane was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 25 November.

Dazed in lap of car luxury

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A DRUG-LADEN Dandenong father has been allegedly found slumped unconscious in the driver’s seat of a stolen car, which was left running on a Pakenham boulevard.

Jovica Djukic, 53, successfully applied for CREDIT bail on drug trafficking and handling stolen goods charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 25 October.

Since being discovered “breathing and unresponsive� in the Mercedes Benz coupe on Grandvue Boulevard about 7pm on 8 September, Djukic had spent 48 days in remand custody. Informant Senior Constable Stephen Woodhouse told the court that police were unable to rouse the Dandenong accused at the time, even after smashing a window to gain entry to the car.

The idling vehicle’s handbrake had not been applied and the transmission was locked in ‘drive’ at the time, the informant said. When paramedics arrived, Djukic made a “remarkable recovery�, Sen Const Woodhouse told the court.

The informant said the coupe, which had false, handwritten number plates, had been allegedly stolen along with its keys from a Templestowe home on 9 August.

Police believe Djukic was not involved in the aggravated burglary; he later told police an unnamed person had given it to him to drive, Sen Const Woodhouse said. Since its theft, the vehicle had sustained about $10,000 in damage.

On arrival at Casey Hospital, police allegedly seized from Djukic a deal bag of one gram of heroin, three deal bags to-

talling five grams of ice, $309 cash, two pharmaceutical tablets and handwritten notes believed to relate to drug deals.

Cheques from pokies venues of between $1400 and $3000 were also found on the unemployed man, the court was told.

Sen Const Woodhouse said Djukic’s phone was receiving several texts and missed calls even around 1am.

Some of the texts referred to exchanging “fruit� and complaining about the quality of “stuff�, the informant said.

Defence lawyer Rahmin de Kretser said Djukic had lacked the opportunity of rehabilitative sentences in the past, and had never been charged with failing to appear at court.

Djukic was bailed to appear at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on 28 October.

Robbery and assault charges are laid A BATTERED and bruised robbery victim flagged down a passing police car and got her attackers caught.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said the 24-year-old Dandenong woman was speaking on her mobile phone as she walked along Jesson Crescent, Dandenong, about 7.25pm on Thursday 22 October.

Two men approached the victim, punched and kicked her, and stole her phone.

The victim gave chase and in nearby Ross Street flagged down a passing police car. “Fortunately we were in the right place at the right time for that one,� she said.

The officers arrested a 13-year-old Dandenong boy and

a 15-year-old Frankston boy.

Both will answer charges of robbery and assault. The Dandenong boy was remanded and the Frankston boy was bailed.

Det Sgt Kirton said the victim sustained swelling and bruising to her face and stomach. “She got her phone back,� he said.

A GREATER Dandenong playgroup program has won a $15,000 prize.

The Victorian Early Years Awards nod for Family Health in Playgroups went to the Mums and Bubs Group.

City of Greater Dandenong, South East Melbourne Medicare Local, Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-operative Limited and AMES run the project.

The project was a pilot aimed to support vulnerable families to access community services, and reached 298 children from 244 families.

A Maternal Child and Health nurse attended 15 playgroups three times each across 33 weeks to provide information and referral pathways.

“These visits led to a range of productive, informal and formal discussions with families about child-focused issues,

including healthy eating, child development, breastfeeding, sun smart, dental health and kinder enrolments,” a council spokeswoman said.

The Victorian Early Years Awards are in their 10th year and recognise early childhood professionals, programs and partnerships that have made a difference to Victorian families.

Winners in each category received $15,000 towards developing their program.

Lessons in fire danger NEW arrivals’ lack of fire-smarts loom as a challenge ahead of a dry, perilous bushfire season, says the region’s CFA boss Trevor Owen.

Assistant Chief Officer Owen, who oversees Victoria’s south-east including metropolitan Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia, said he’d like to see fire awareness taught in primary and high schools even in the suburbs.

“We will continue to live amongst (native vegetation). It’s beautiful but incredibly dangerous.

“When you think of the growing risk we face, and it’s not going to go away, we should be educating children about the dangers of bushfires.

“We need to build it into schools so generations growing up appreciate the risk.”

There should be a concerted campaign to inform leaders of our community’s varied cultures, he argued.

“Many who come to Australia to live don’t understand the bushfire risk. They haven’t grown up around it and are oblivious.

“How we work with the multicultural communities is an important factor.”

The official fire season is expected to arrive early this year - sometime in November.

Soils have dried and grassland fuel has built over consecutive rain-sparse years.

Volunteers, as always, are the “backbone of the CFA’s firefighting power” this summer but more are needed to pitch in, Mr Owen said.

He believes volunteer culture is one of Australia’s success stories.

“It’s becoming increasingly difficult.

Our average age (in the CFA) is getting older and there comes a time when our youth are going to have to step up.

“What better thing to do in your life than protect another, than to go out there and do good for the community?

“The Victorian community can’t afford a paid CFA workforce to replace its volunteers.”

To underline the point, the CFA’s 1240 brigades include just 33 that are staffed by paid fire-fighters.

The CFA covers more of metro Melbourne than the MFB but those in the suburban interface areas also help cover for under-resourced rural brigades.

“Volunteers in the metropolitan areas play such a critical role. They have got employers who can generously let them go and play a part.

“They are needed to help in the farming communities where people can’t just go and walk off their property on a regular basis during summer.”

Police allege he had committed numerous burglaries in the Dandenong area.

City planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman said the car park was open Monday to Saturday until 9pm.

He said he was happy to trial opening the facility from 9am to 10pm on Sundays, and would assess the move after six months.

Housing helping hand

By CASEY NEILL A HIDDEN Dandenong housing hub has become a haven for over-55s who need a hand.

Common Equity Housing on Monday 26 October celebrated filling the last of the units in Harmony Village, on Herbert Street.

Paul McDonald slept on the floor on his first night in his unit.

He’d spent the past five years in a rooming house, so had no furniture of his own. That’s about to change.

“Getting a home here is the best thing that’s ever happened to me - knowing I won’t have to move again has changed my life,” he said.

Common Equity Housing (CEHL) received $2.7 million through the Victorian Property Fund towards buying 20 units on the site for affordable housing.

“The government funding has enabled these high-quality units to house older people with low incomes who would otherwise be languishing in unaffordable and insecure housing the private market,” CEHL managing director Stephen Nash said.

A tenant co-operative is involved with managing their homes and common areas, including a community centre.

“It’s more than just affordable, secure housing - it’s an opportunity to be involved in a meaningful way,” Mr Nash said.

Co-op secretary Carole Bloomer said the co-op provided a sense of security, community and support.

She moved in four years ago, following a lung transplant in 2013.

“At that point I was living in a nice unit in Mount Waverley, but it was on a big block and inevitably they were going to knock it down,” she said.

Ms Bloomer was about to retire and couldn’t afford market rent on a pension.

“This was a godsend,” she said.

“I’m just so happy to be here,” she said.

Ann O’Hara was the most recent addition to the neighbourhood, moving in two weeks ago.

She’s lived in Australia for 50-odd years, 26 of them in Noble Park, Eumemmerring and Doveton.

She also works part-time in Dandenong three days a week so was thrilled to be offered a place in Harmony Village.

“Everyone’s so friendly,” Ms O’Hara said.

“Dandenong is just wonderful.”

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams toured the village and said the project provided housing to tenants who would otherwise have difficulty in the private rental market.

“I was struck when I first came here by how beautiful it is,” she said.

“Getting a unit here has been a huge relief and a huge change in people’s lives.”

Squatter hurt in Dandy shed fire

A SQUATTER is fighting for life following a shed fire in Dandenong.

Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said CFA crews attended the blaze at the rear of a Cleeland Street doctor’s surgery about 3.10am on Wednesday 21 October.

He said a 37-year-old man had been squatting in the shed for some time.

“He appears to have accidentally set a fire in the shed while sleeping,” he said.

Sgt Kirton said fire investigators ruled the blaze non-suspicious without specifying a cause, but a lit candle was believed to be the cause.

The fire caused extensive damage and the man suffered smoke inhalation.

He said the man was conscious and speaking freely when taken to Dandenong Hospital but had since deteriorated.

“He was transferred to The Alfred hospital where he’s in a critical but stable condition in intensive care,” he said.

He urged anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

SPRINGVALE Monash Legal Service has announced a reduced 2014-'15 profit amid profound funding challenges ahead.

At its annual general meeting on 28 October, the service’s balance sheet showed a yearly profit of less than $5000 - built on abandoning $86,000 of office renovations and outreach services.

Service marks loss

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS KHODAYAR Amini was a persecuted man “lost and uncertain where to find help”, a moving service in a Dandenong park was told on 24 October.

More than 200 mourners laid flowers and lit candles at the spot in Robert Booth Reserve where the Afghan asylum seeker burned himself to death under trees six days earlier.

The service was organised by members of the Hazara community since Mr Amini had no family or friends in Dandenong.

Speakers included student Kobra Moradi, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams, Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan and human rights activist John Gulzari.

Mr Gulzari noted that the service coincided with the day of Ashura, the “saddest day in the Islamic calendar”.

He said Mr Amini’s writings showed “a man persecuted by a system of uncertainty, terrified he would be deported, deeply mistrusting of authority”.

“He was a man lost and uncertain where to find help. It made me sick to my stomach to imagine his torment.”

He urged mourners to “get up and do something” against “harsh government policies ... literally driving people to madness and, in more than one case, suicide”.

Mr Gulzari said 31,000 asylum seekers on bridging visas in Australia lived in a state of uncertainty.

“That someone, because they fear of being returned to

immigration detention and to be sent back to Afghanistan, could take their own life is, to me, not acceptable.

“Let’s hope that Khodayar’s death is not in vain.”

Ms Williams said the current regime’s “cruelty” had a “disastrous impact” on asylum seekers’ health and wellbeing.

Their aim was simply to build a better life for themselves and their loved ones, she said.

Attack was not racial victim A DANDENONG woman is “surprised” by suggestions that prejudice was behind her assault in Melbourne’s CBD. East Police Station’s Acting Sergeant Sean Toohey said the 21-yearold Muslim woman was walking along Swanston Street, outside the State Library, about 1.10pm on Thursday (29 October).

She received a single punch to the right side of her head, causing her to fall to the ground and hit the left side of her head.

Sgt Toohey said paramedics examined the victim at the scene but she did not require hospitalisation.

“There’s been no information here to say that this is prejudice-motivated,” he said.

“The victim has told us that nothing was said to her, she just felt the strike to the head.

“She actually said to us that she saw no evidence of that anyway so she’s a bit surprised by what she’s seen in the media today.”

The attacker was shirtless and is described as Caucasian, 183 centimetres tall and about 45 years old with a slim build, short light-coloured hair, a beard and a tattoo on his upper right arm.

The only people who are at very low risk of skin cancers in Australia are people with the darkest skin types ie black Africans from equatorial Africa and Aboriginal people with very dark skin.

Even they can get melanomas affecting their nails and palms but this is fortunately very rare.

People from the Mediterranean regions, Arabic countries and those from Turkey, Iran and the Indian subcontinent all have a significant risk of skin cancer in Australia.

Most commonly they get the less aggressive basal cell cancers from their

forties and fifties onwards.

Often these basal cell cancers are more pigmented and can sometimes be confused with the more aggressive melanoma.

Check out those spots The condition keratoacanthoma is a variant of squamous cell cancer of the skin. They present as firm domes or balls containing a central plug of keratin (dead skin), pictured left.

They grow alarmingly quickly and can get to a centimetre or more in diameter in a matter of weeks. Typically they are most common on sun exposed sites of the body in people over 50.

Despite their rapid rate of growth

they are not an especially aggressive form of cancer and are very unlikely to spread to lymph glands or through the bloodstream to distant organs (metastasise).

Untreated they can eventually shrink and go away but this often leaves an unattractive ragged indented scar.

They are best cut out surgically and sent for examination under the microscope to confirm the diagnosis.

The Rotary Club of Dandenong South East has been working with CatholicCare in Dandenong.

The support service asked Rotarians to support the soccer club, which is made up of Sudanese boys.

“The club is administered by local community volunteers,” Rotarian Colin

Byron said.

“They have significant issues financing the club to pay registrations, ground hire, uniforms, balls, equipment etcetera.

“Many of the boys are being brought by single mums who do not have adequate financial means.

“The community recognises that they need their children to play organised sport rather than roam the streets.”

So the Rotarians presented more than 30

soccer balls and goal nets to help out.

“We plan to provide ongoing additional equipment,” Mr Byron said.

Volunteers from the South Sudan Equatorians Association officially established Cleeland United Soccer Club in 2004.

It started with only one senior team but now has players in age groups from undernines to under-16s.

The club has competed in tournaments throughout Victoria and won several titles.

Mobile grabbed during call POLICE are appealing for help to find a mobile phone thief who struck in Dandenong.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said a 31-year-old Dandenong woman was talking on her mobile while walking along Hutton Street near Robinson Street about 7.10pm on Saturday 24 October.

A man approached her from behind, grabbed her phone and ran to a waiting vehicle in Robinson Street. Det Sgt Kirton said the victim tried to open the door of the moving vehicle and was dragged a short distance, suffering minor lacerations to her left knee and wrist.

The metallic red Toyota Corolla hatch, about a 2010 model, was last seen travelling north on Robinson Street with two men on board.

The victim described the thief as 170 centimetres tall and Pacific Islander in appearance with a large build and shaved back of his head. He was wearing a red flannel shirt, jeans and runners.

Gerry hands over the vans

By CASEY NEILL GERRY Ryan has left the building - Jayco’s Dandenong factory, that is.

He’s retired as CEO of Australia’s largest RV manufacturer, which he founded more than 40 years ago.

Mr Ryan told the Journal he stepped down about a month ago and that Carl Bizon from Keysborough’s TriMas Corporation had taken the reins.

His comments came during a discussion about the Victorian Manufacturing Showcase, held at Chisholm in Dandenong on 27 October.

“I’m sure that it will be there next year,” he said.

“I don’t know if they’ll invite me back again.

“I might be on the shelf next year - I might be yesterday’s hero!”

Mr Bizon told the Journal Mr Ryan remained the Jayco board chairman.

“Gerry ultimately came to the view that he needed to withdraw from the day-to-day operations of Jayco,” he said.

“He approached an external recruitment firm - and they found me.”

Mr Bizon said he was honoured to work for Mr Ryan.

“He’s an extraordinary entrepreneur and a leader,” he said.

him to choose me to take on the role.”

He had to walk away from “an amazing job” at TriMas. “The chance to work for Gerry was something I found pretty compelling,” he said.

Mr Bizon started his working life in the steel industry in

Newcastle in 1980.

“Through various manufacturing jobs in the steel industry and associated industrial products and industrial markets I’ve ended up here,” he said.

Roll for helping to make TriMas Australia’s largest towing system manufacturer.

“In the seven years that I’ve been here we’ve tripled the size of the company. It’s been a pretty good ride,” he said.

It was Mr Ryan who presented him with the award.

“That was mid-process so that was kind of funny,” he said.

“It was quite a humbling moment when Gerry presented me with my award.”

Mr Bizon said he was finding his feet with the 1200-plus Jayco staff.

“Everyone’s been very welcoming,” he said.

“The dedication and commitment of the team to the busi-

ness and to Gerry is something to be treasured.”

Mr Bizon said he was working on plans to develop the business and its people.

“I’m in no hurry. The company in fundamentally sound - there’s nothing broken,” he said.

“From where I sit it’s just really about bringing contemporary manufacturing techniques and philosophies to a very wellestablished business.

“I understand the product very well. I’ve been a Jayco owner for 14-odd years. It’s helped me to get up to speed very quickly.”

Hungry foodies dropping by for a frothy

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THERE’S a fair bit of fizz happening at a newly opened Dandenong South brewery.

South East Brewing, which makes the crafty Exit Brewery beers, Kaiju Beer and Golden Axe Cider, was visited by an international food buyers delegation on 28 October - a week after opening the factory.

Brewers Callam and Nat Reeves (Kaiju Beer), and Grum Knight (Exit Brewery) poured out cider and highflavour, high-alcohol content beers for the delegation.

One of the options included the Kaiju double imperial pale ale (IPA) that won gold at the Australian Craft Beer Association Awards this month.

Callam Reeves said the higher alcohol content - up to 11 per cent, or four and a half standard drinks - was balanced by the beers’ extra malty and hoppy flavours.

The Kaiju labels - a Mambo-like array of designs by artist Mikey Burton - also stands apart from the crowd.

Exit Brewery’s smoked stout was developed by

brewer Grum Knight. The inspiration struck him while visiting Belfast.

The complex stout consists of a smoked malt; an injection of peat also gives the beer a whiskey-like flavour, Mr Knight said.

Over two days, the delegates also toured Clayton South-based manufacturer Annex Foods, Laurent Bakery in Braeside, dry dairy and beverage mix manufacturer Mansfields in Keysborough, Coolibah Herbs in Pearcedale, Europa Cheese in Pakenham and fruit grower Montague Fresh in Lysterfield.

The delegates also visited Victoria’s agricultural regions as well as processing plants and food research centres.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the mission was a chance for food producers to forge new relationships with overseas buyers - and hence jobs for Victorians.

The food and fibre export sector employs more than 190,000 Victorians; its exports worth is $11.6 billion.

Manufacturing’s best is put on show

By CASEY NEILL EVEN Jayco mastermind Gerry Ryan learnt a thing or two at the Victorian Manufacturing Showcase.

He said 600 people attended the event at Chisholm Institute in Dandenong on Tuesday 27 October, up from 500 last year.

“Which is a 20 per cent increase any business would like that type of increase,” he said.

“Manufacturing’s alive and well.”

Mr Ryan said the panel members had “actually done it” and shared ideas that would help others to improve.

“Even though I’ve reached some heights, I had some take away messages from every one of the presenters,” he said.

“I wrote three pages of notes, it was just fantastic.”

He said the event gave manufactur-

ers an opportunity to network and work together.

“We get stuck in our businesses and don’t get to take time out,” he said.

“It was a great springboard for everyone to go back into their businesses and improve their businesses and their network of contacts.”

Industry Minister Lily D’Ambrosio announced the $5 million Future Industries Fund Manufacturing Program at the event.

“This fund will support Victorian manufacturers to invest in new technologies and processes, and help to transition Victoria toward a high-tech manufacturing economy,” she said.

Ms D’Ambrosio said companies could apply for up to $500,000 to invest in new manufacturing technologies and processes that would create new jobs, increase productivity and boost economic growth.

South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden said the cash could only be good news.

“What I like about what they’re saying is the innovation can be product, process, organisation ... it depends what you’re trying to do,” he said.

“I think the government is recognising that innovation isn’t just product.”

Mr Boden said Peter Meek from Dandenong South yogurt producer Chobani and fruit industry supplier GP Graders shared their journeys.

“They were very clear on why they were successful,” he said.

Chisholm Institute engineering, electrotechnology and telecommunications associate director Paul Sadler said he picked up information he could take back to the classroom.

“I invited a 3D printer to come back and talk to the group that’s doing 3D

printing,” he said.

“It wasn’t just about sitting there and listening to people speak.

“There was an opportunity for people to engage with senior leaders in manufacturing about their success stories, and try to glean some advice that they could use to improve their business.”

Bombardier managing director Rene Lalande said manufacturing in the transport industry was undergoing substantial changes right now.

“But with the positive outlook for public transport, the talent I have seen in our local enterprises, and the renewed efforts of our government to value local content, I know manufacturing has a real future in Victoria,” he said.

“I encourage you all to look not only outward, but inwards.

“Embrace the changes, and challenges, of the manufacturing industry - and ultimately, be part of it!”

Boots made for walking

By CASEY NEILL WALKING is the most popular sport and recreation activity in Greater Dandenong - and footy doesn’t even make the top 10.

Councillors endorsed the 2015 Sport and Active Recreation Participation Survey at the 26 October Greater Dandenong Council meeting.

The 669 respondents also revealed that half did not engage in the recommended levels of physical activity - 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity on most days.

The survey found that lack of time was the main barrier to participating in sport and recreation activities.

Other major barriers included lack of information for people born oversees; facilities being too far away, especially

for young people; and health reasons, for people with a disability and older adults.

The 10 most popular sport and recreation activities in Greater Dandenong, in order, are walking or walking the dog; swimming; running or jogging; cycling; fitness, gym or aerobics; basketball; soccer; dancing; tennis; and yoga.

“Good old Aussie Rules doesn’t even make the top 10 anymore,“ Cr John Kelly said.

Community services director Mark Doubleday said the top 10 preferences were the same as the 2011 survey but the order had changed.

Participation rates for walking and fitness, gym and aerobics had increased since 2011, and swimming is the most popular children’s activity despite

its overall popularity dropping.

Mr Doubleday said this was in line with a nationwide downward trend in swimming participation.

He said soccer and swimming participation levels in Greater Dandenong were above national averages, despite the number of soccer clubs decreasing and the sport appearing at number seven on the popularity list.

“Consolidation of clubs is not necessarily a bad thing,” he said.

Mr Doubleday said it remained a preferred sport in 15 to 17 years age group in particular.

The council will use the report to help inform planning for facilities and programming.

Play gets funds over the net

By CASEY NEILL KEYSBOROUGH students have played ping pong for 24 hours to raise more than $2000 for charity.

Lighthouse Christian Church was among 44 venues across Australia to host a Ping Pong-AThon event on 23 and 24 October.

Participants from Lighthouse Christian College committed to play table tennis for three hours of the 24-hour event and engage their family and friends to sponsor their efforts.

Money raised will support the work of eight organisations in South-East Asia to combat human trafficking and the exploitation of young people.

“I’ve done a bit of volunteer social work in South-East Asia and I’ve been to some of the non-government organisations this event is supporting,” organiser David Goode said.

“The work they do is quite phenomenal.

“Supporting them in this capacity was an easy thing to do.

“We ordered pizza at 11.30pm which arrived at midnight and that helped us on!”

Ping Pong-A-Thon founder Adrian Rowse saw first-hand the challenges many young people faced as a result of being born in an environment of extreme poverty.

“Many children in South-East Asia are sent by their families to the cities to fend for themselves or to find ‘work’ and send money back home to support the rest of their family,” he said.

“With limited education, no job skills and nowhere to live, most of these young people end up living on the streets and are drawn into the sex industry as a means of survival.”

‘Team’ works for Blicavs

By RUSSELL BENNETT THERE’S one recurring theme when it comes to exciting Dandenong Rangers WNBL forward Sara Blicavs - the simple notion of ‘team’.

It’s not just about playing for the Rangers, but truly being a part of that team unit. She knows that’s what it takes to win, and her biggest support network is her other team ... the Blicavs family.

Her parents Andris and Karen both played for Australian national basketball teams and have been involved heavily in the sport, while her oldest brother Kris is a SEABL player and Mark a former gun runner-turned Geelong AFL footballer who won the Carji Greeves Medal this year as the club’s best-and-fairest player.

Now 22, Blicavs is this year embarking on her second stint in Rangers colours. She started her WNBL career with the AIS in 2009/10 before moving to the Rangers the first time around.

From there she was called up to the Opals’ tour of China in 2013 before signing on with the Bendigo Spirit, where she won the 2013/14 championship.

A big part of the reason for her return to Dandenong was that notion of ‘team’.

“I don’t want to be a part of a team when we’re just focussed on one player and people are out there to get their stats,” she told the Journal.

“Our team is nothing like that that’s what’s so good about it. We can have someone who’s not playing well and anyone can step up for us off our bench - Tenaya (Phillips), Jacinta (Kennedy), anyone. We’ve just got so much depth and I think that’s why we’re doing quite well at the moment.”

After four games the Rangers were tied for top spot on the WNBL ladder - a far cry from where many pundits thought they’d be.

“It’s just cool to know we can be there and hold that spot,” Blicavs said.

“We’re so under-rated. I think the WNBL tipped us to come second last, and I absolutely love it when people do that because then you get a chance to prove people wrong.

“No-one will expect us to do well, but to be honest I look at our team and I think we can do very well.”

The Rangers have quickly become known this season for their fast, athletic, up-tempo style of play. And that suits Blicavs perfectly.

“It’s not a team full of stars, it’s a star team,” she said.

“It’s not like we’ve got superstars on our team, but we’ve just got great players and great girls. That’s a very big part of being successful.

“Winning the championship (with Bendigo) has been probably the biggest highlight of my basketball career so far and that feeling is so hard to describe but it’s just amazing.

“Because I know what that’s like, I really want to have it again. If I can bring that attitude and behaviour for

the rest of our girls I’ll definitely be doing that because I would love to win a championship with our team at the Rangers.”

Blicavs is thrilled to be able to play alongside, and learn from Jacinta Kennedy who she describes as “one of the best players I’ve ever watched”.

The likes of Steph Cumming and Alex Bunton also have Blicavs excited about what this season could have in store.

Blicavs, like her brothers, started her sporting journey in athletics. She even dreamed of reaching Olympic level.

“I think it was when I hit 13-yearsold - which is very young anyway -

that I got really nervous at athletics and didn’t enjoy it that much,” she said.

“I think it’s because it’s an individual sport.”

Having started playing domestic basketball as a 10-year-old, it was when Blicavs got to the Melbourne Tigers that her career started to really take off.

And her family was there every step of the way.

“I really look up to both my brothers and anything they say to me I’ll listen to and take in,” Blicavs said.

“You hear it from coaches, and you hear it from players and other people - and even your parents - about what to do but for me it doesn’t really click

until my brothers say it to me.

“Mark is brutally honest with me and I’m the same with him. I know nothing about football but I know what should be done and it’s good because we do feed off each other.

“But Chris, in particular, I play a lot of one-on-one and two-on-two with. I shoot around and work out with him and I think he’s quite smart and he really knows what he’s talking about.

“I know it’s cliched but I really respect my parents and what they’ve done in the basketball world. They are a massive influence but really my brothers are too. I absolutely adore and love them. They all ride the highs and lows with me.”

Strong field for Cup from northern parts THE internationalisation of Tuesday’s 155th running of the Group 1 $6,200,000 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200 metres) has reached a point where about half the field are from the northern hemisphere with a record of 11 having been set in 2011.

Some are opposed to this but not me as it displays the high esteem that Australian racing is held in and remember that the Melbourne Cup is the world’s richest handicap.

For one visitor, the Ed Dunloptrained, Red Cadeaux, it will be his fifth attempt after three seconds (2011, 2013 and 2014) in his previous four Melbourne Cup starts. He will be much better suited at Flemington.

Cup favourite, the Japanese owned and trained Fame Game had no luck at Caulfield but stormed home from the tail of the field on the turn to run sixth and will, likewise, be all the better for the run and the extra distance. He looks a great chance. Snow Sky was a strong fifth at Caulfield and will be another appreciating the longer trip.

The David Hayes-Tom Dabernig stable are having a great spring and Criterion will be hard to beat. After a strong autumn he raced twice

in England and returned to win the Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes. He had an interrupted run and caught the eye with his second in the Cox Plate.

They also have the Geelong Cup winner Almoonqith, and that has been a great lead-up race with three Melbourne Cup victors, Media Puzzle (2002), Americain (2010) and Dunaden (2011), coming through that event.

The Chris Waller stable is sweeping all before them in recent seasons, culminating in the Cox Plate with Winx. With three runners, Preferment is the best, but Who Shot Thebarman won the 2014 Auckland Cup and was third in last year’s Melbourne Cup and this year’s Sydney Cup winner, Grand Marshall must be watched. John O’Shea has Hartnell who is coming to hand well and Lee and Anthony Freedman’s Sir Ivanhowe must not be forgotten.

KELLY Bravo’s flying machine Kayda Shae is a pronounced short-priced favourite for Friday’s $50,000 winner-takes-all group two Shootout following the box draw at Sandown Park on Thursday.

The last greyhound drawn in the preferential box draw, Lisa Delbridge (deputising for trainer Kelly Bravo) had no choice in which box she drew, which in a way proved a blessing.

“Red box, red box, red box,” said Delbridge when asked about the instruction for selecting the box for Kelly Bravo’s speedster.

“I said earlier I either wanted to be the first out or last out because she never told me any other box!

She watched it online and said ‘oh well, it is what is’. You can’t change it, but he should get plenty of room from there if he’s good enough.”

Interestingly, seven of the 17 Shootouts conducted have been won from box five.

Kayda Shae, ran 29.10 when running second in the recent Speed Star, having run 29.12 to qualify for the series. Since, Kayda Shae has twice been placed behind champion Fernando Bale at group one level and has been installed the $2.25 favourite for the Shootout by TAB. While most interest centres on Tuesday it must be remembered that Thursday sees the running of the $1,005,000 Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500 metres) with the David Hayes-Tom Dabernig stable having outstanding chances with Sacred Eye and Stay With Me, the latter being a daughter of Miss Finland, the 2006 Oaks winner. Other prospects are Jameka and Pasadena Girl.

On Saturday attention will be on the sprinters with the $1,002,500 Group 1 Darley Classic (1200 metres) and the $1,005,000 Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600 metres) plus the $301,500 Group 3 Queen’s Cup (normally the Queen Elizabeth Stakes) (2600 metres) which is likely to feature runners who missed out on making the field for the Melbourne Cup. The Queen’s Cup is run in a different state each year.
