The last dance for our Ron “To go get some milk would take pretty much a day, and another day for coffee,” he said of Ron’s favourite hang-out, the main street of Warburton.

He noted the old Crundish Cafe where he had a coffee named after him as a favourite haunt.

The bespoke coffee gave a nod to his love of pushing the boundaries.

“It had a shot of whisky flavouring in it and I think Ron loved the idea that he was having alcohol at that hour of the morning, despite the fact it was just a flavouring.”

Theo spoke of Ron as a unique person who had strong personal standards, was hardworking, a thorough gentleman who always stuck up for what he believed in.

His comment: “Ron managed to strike a balance between being a perfect gentleman and being a total bad-ass,” drew nods of recognition and laughter.

Family and friends moved to the Mechanics Institute Hall to reminisce in a place that held a special place in Ron’s heart.

WARBURTON elder, Ron Howard, has been farewelled with dance, music, song and stories ... lots of endearing and funny stories.

Ron, who moved to Warburton in the 1970s with his late wife, Anna-Maria, passed away at his Big Pats Creek home on 15 October.

He was just three months shy of his 100th birthday on 27 January, 2016.

Unsurprisingly, he chose to make his final public appearance in a spectacular mulberrycoloured coffin.

Hundreds of people, representing almost every aspect of the community he loved, gathered on Wednesday at the Seventh-Day Adventist church and later at the Mechanic’s Institute Hall to pay tribute and to celebrate a life lived with joy, generosity and flair.

An inspiration with his energy and positive take on life, Ron featured in the Mail on many occasions.

He was a reliable contact on local issues and a valued friend of the Upper Yarra Mail.

In a Mail interview to mark

his 90th birthday, he recalled first visiting Warburton in 1946 and riding up on the timber tram to Starlings Gap and the Federal Mill.

“It was a wonderful experience to see it then in its natural state,” he recalled.

In 1970 he and Anna-Maria, bought a block of land at Big Pat’s Creek and a short time later moved their California bungalow house from Beaumaris to become part and parcel of the landscape and the community.

Many tributes from family and friends spoke of that wonderful life and of Ron’s Warburton legacy.

His grandsons, Oscar and Theo Howard, gave moving tributes and were among family members who wore bow ties as a salute to Ron’s trade-mark fashion style.

Oscar noted there was a certain sense of the ridiculous in his grandfather’s choice of coffin.

“For anyone here, it’s one thing that doesn’t need explaining,” he said.

“I think in his eyes, family extended well beyond those who were related to him, to neighbours and friends,” he said.

High spirits at fair

By KATH GANNAWAY ROVING minstrels, jousting knights, market stalls and lots of hearty tucker kept the 3000 or so visitors to Camelot Castle at Yellingbo in high spirits on Sunday.

The annual Medieval Village Fair was a huge success, bringing local and visiting families and community groups.

The event is auspiced by WHYLD and run by Yellingbo CFA, Camelot Castle and Woori Community House to give local families an affordable day out in spring.

The Punch & Judy show was a huge success again this year along with the free games organised by the Hoddles Creek CFA Junior volunteers.

Event spokesperson Sonja Mazar from Woori Community House said the fair was about giving back to the community and promoting community spirit and networking.

“It is great to see this event so well supported by local people and organisations,” she said.

Ms Mazar said the financial support for the event by the Woori Yallock Community (Bendigo) Bank was a great example of that support.

“They really have put back into the community to enable us to put on a low-cost family day and without their support it wouldn’t happen.

She saidYarra Valley FM radio station was another great supporter.

Donations made on the day will assist Yellingbo CFA.

THREE of Healesville’s proud workers were acknowledged by the Rotary Club of Healesville earlier this month, when the group handed out its Pride of Workmanship Awards.

The Rotary Club handed out its awards to Sara Daniels and the Mail’s own Jesse Graham, and a certificate of appreciation to Pam Druitt at Sanctuary House Resort Motel on Thursday, 15 October.

Ms Druitt received her certificate to mark 50 years of “outstanding service and personal committment" working as a pharmacy assistant in Healesville, while Ms Daniels was acknowledged for her “outstanding customer service and horticultural advice“ at the Black Spur Nursery and Florist.

Mr Graham received his award for “providing a voice for the community“ through the Mail News Group.

The awards were handed out by Rotarian, John Robinson, who praised each of the receipients before they in turn gave a short acceptance speech.

Last dance for Ron, a man at community’s heart held at the Arts Centre next door.

Guests were asked to make a donation towards a piano fund in lieu of birthday gifts.

“At my age, what do I want ... I just want to get the hall done,” he told the Mail at the time. $600 was raised on the night and with some further donations the piano became a reality.

He sang and danced at numerous

events in the hall over the past decade.

Former Post Master and friend Norman Orr was among many who shared stories of Ronny. He spoke with affection and humour of Ron’s sometimes “ribald” jokes, long chats, and of how he sang in the main street when he and his wife retired.

“I was able, through Ron, to see how to get that little bit more out of

places like Warburton when you meet characters like Ronny.

“We were very proud when we finished up and he sang, ‘We’ll meet again’ on the steps of the post office,” he said.

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS SATURDAY 24 October 2015 marked 12 months since the historic Woori Yallock Hotel burned to the ground.

Since then, pub owners Melissa and Doug Fraser have been fighting an uphill battle to secure a planning permit to rebuild the pub.

The Frasers said they first approached the town planning department at council in November 2014, a month after the pub burnt down and they still had no permit to begin building.

“We had the original application in less than one day past the day it was supposed to be in and they cancelled the application entirely,” Mr Fraser said.

“We than had to reapply for a new permit, but this time there was a list of all new conditions we had to comply with.”

“It’s so disappointing,” Mrs Fraser said.

“You feel like you keep getting knocked to the ground just when you are getting ahead” Yarra Ranges Shire director of Planning, Building and Health Andrew Paxton said the due date for submissions was a steadfast deadline unless an extension was applied for.

“Officers spoke to the applicant about a week before the due date for the information to remind the applicant that it had not been provided,” he said in a written statement.

“However, despite this, the applicant did not provide the information prior to the due date, and did not request an extension to this time as they are able to do.”

The second application of the Frasers for a building permit was rejected by council and 31 more conditions were added to the application before it would be considered.

The Frasers calculate they have spent and extra $50,000 meeting these additional conditions, many of which have been repeated from the previous application.

The Frasers said they felt the council had made it especially difficult for them to move ahead with the rebuild.

“We’re just a husband and wife team putting everything we can into bringing this pub back,” Mr Fraser said.”

Despite all the setbacks, the Frasers are confident they will have their building permit by mid-November and plan to have the pub open and trading by October 2016.

In brief Block and tackle stolen A BLOCK and tackle has been stolen from a Warburton property earlier this month, and police are asking for anyone with information to come forward.

Between Saturday 17 October and Monday 19 October, a block and tackle was stolen from a Melbourne Water property on Woods Point Road in Warburton.

The machinery is used to lift engines out of cars.

Spectacle Site break-in POSSIBLY-bespectacled burglars are being sought by police, after a breakin at Healesville’s Spectacle Site optometrist earlier this month.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said between noon on Saturday 17 October and 8am on Monday 19 October, a lever was used to force entry to the Maroondah Highway business’s front door.

The would-be burglars then went to the reception area of the store, ransacking cupboards and a cash-drawer, though police were not able to provide details of what was taken.

POLICE are asking witnesses to come forward after a break-in at the Healesville Pharmacy last week.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said between 6pm on Wednesday 21 October and 9am the following day, unknown persons broke into a shed at the Maroondah Highway business.

Det Sgt Smithwick said a box containing old prescriptions was believed to be stolen in the incident.

If you see a snake, head back the

Familiarise yourself with snakes that are common in your area.

In the event of a bite, identifying the type of snake may help with your pet’s treatment A snakebite rarely bleeds significantly and is notoriously hard to find.

If you find a dead snake in your garden, or have reason to believe your pet has been bitten, get your pet to the vet as soon as possible.

A pet that has suffered a snakebite initially may show signs of sudden collapse, vomiting, trembling, salivation and excessive panting.

It is possible that your dog may also appear normal.

Within about 30 minutes of being bitten, your pet may start to show symptoms of: Paralysis; Weakness; Wobbly legs; Dilated pupils; and Difficulty with breathing.

Animal Aid recommends the following if your pet has been bitten: Remember to stay calm; Keep your pet calm too through limiting their activity; If possible, keep the location of the bite below heart level; Seek veterinary care for your pet immediately;

AS THE weather warms up, Animal Aid is urging pet owners to take extra care not only when venturing outdoors with their pets, but also in their own backyards.

McCarthy out of mayoralty

By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Ranges mayor Maria McCarthy will not be seeking re-election when councillors meet for their mayoral election next month.

Cr McCarthy told the Mail that she would not contest the position of mayor at the 17 November special council meeting, where councillors elect the mayor and deputy mayor for the coming year.

“I’m looking forward to going back to being just the councillor, and my home will be happy,” she said, referencing a garden that had been neglected during her mayoral year.

“I’m not interested in being re-elected.”

Describing her time as mayor as a “big eye-opener”, Cr McCarthy said that her year in the mayor’s chair put her in contact with community groups and organisations outside of her own ward of Billanook.

She paid tribute to the groups around the Yarra Ranges, and said they and council, overall, had the same goal - to make the area the best they could.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s environment, history, community groups or service clubs, everybody’s there for the same purpose - they want to make Yarra Ranges a better place,” Cr McCarthy said.

A Yarra Ranges Council spokesperson said that Cr McCarthy had presented “at least” 50 formal speeches during her time as mayor, as well as a number of informal speeches.

Cr McCarthy said that she had lost much of her public speaking confidence in recent years, after experiencing medical issues, though some had been regained through her time with Wandin Toastmasters Club.

“Although I was a Toastmaster before and I had my own business, I was quite confident in my own space but I lost that,” she said.

“They’ve been very helpful - even sitting in the chair, it’s helped just to be confident speaking and using the microphone.

“It felt quite good to be in the chair yesterday (Tuesday 13 October).”

Cr McCarthy said no-one had yet put their hand up for the mayoral position, though nominations would be organised in the lead-up to the meeting.

Car park on the way

By KATH GANNAWAY WORK on a new $259,000 car park at Woori Yallock Primary School will start soon.

School captains Kassity Cairns and Orlando Russell joined Casey MP Tony Smith and Yarra Ranges Councillor Jim Child on Friday for a symbolic turning of the sod to set the project on its way.

It will take more than a shiny shovel to break decades of compacted soil, but the significance of the event was enough to bring a smile and a sigh of relief to principal Danny Hyndman, assistant principal Brendan Fitzpatrick and School Council president Kate Russell, who have advocated, waited and worked hard to get a new, safe car park for the school.

The car park will serve not only the school, but other groups in the community who use the school’s facilities after hours.

Mr Smith said it was an exciting day for everyone involved in getting the project up and running.

“I was very pleased to be able to promise at the last Federal Election that if our government was elected we would fund the project,” he said.

He recognised the role O’Shannassy Ward representative Cr Child had played as mayor at the time, saying he had advocated strongly and was instrumental, along with council’s director of Environment and Engineering, Mark Vermalis, in getting the council on board to deliver the project.

Cr Child said Yarra Ranges Council had a reputation for getting projects shovel ready, and the Woori Yallock school car park was an example of that.

“This project is a great example of a partnership ap-

proach,” he said.

“The school lobbied for the car park, the Federal Government funded it and council will deliver it.

“It will significantly improve the traffic congestion, not only for the school community, but for residents in the local streets.”

Mr Hyndman thanked Mr Smith and Cr Child for their

strong advocacy on behalf of the school, and noted the work done by Ms Russell and Mr Fitzpatrick who, he said, had been the driving forces behind the school’s campaign to get a safer car park.

The project will extend and seal the existing gravel car park, provide a disabled parking space and new footpath connections.

Warburton Mail 22 October 1965 Magpie stalwart dies A MAN who played a major role in the re-forming of the Warburton Football Club after the war died at his home in Warburton on Sunday.

Mr Joe Mace, 55, a Warburton resident for some 30 years, devoted much time and energy in the years immediately after the war to the coaching and encouraging of young players.

Mr Mace worked for the railway for many years and in later years with the Metropolitan Board of Works.

Mrs Harvey dies at 98 A WOMAN who came from England when she was 12 and settled in Warburton 40 years ago died at the age of 98 on Sunday.

Laura Jane Harvey, of Main Road, Warburton, was a foundation member of the Warburton Women’s Croquet Club, a past president of the Women’s National League until the war years when they transferred their activities to the Red Cross.

She was president of the CWA for many years and president of St Mary’s Guild for 12 years.

New hospital wing opened UPPER Yarra residents and official guests numbered about 170 at the official opening of the new nurses’ home annexe of the Yarra Junction Hospital on Sunday.

The new wing, which will accommodate five nurses, cost £10,500 to build and was financed on a Government Grant of £3 for every £1 raised locally.

The opening was performed by Miss E. Francis OBE, a superintendent of the Victorian Bush Nursing Association for some 34 years.

Healesville Guardian 26 October, 1935 Healesville Bowling and Croquet clubs UNDER somewhat threatening weather conditions, the official opening of the Healesville Bowling and Croquet clubs was performed on Wednesday afternoon by the Shire President Cr. Mowle.

The attendance was smaller than usual.

The council had lent a favourable ear to the club’s suggestion of extending the greens in place of the tennis courts.

It was decided that this move would prove an additional attraction to the district and attract a desirable class of visitor.

Unfortunately, at the present time some undesirables were making the town their rendezvous but steps would be taken to prevent this.

Healesville Football Club ON Friday night the Memorial Hall

was such a magnet of gaiety and colour that it attracted approximately 350 people, young and old to participate in the Healesville Football Club’s annual ball.

The tasteful decorations reflected very creditably on the ability of Mr. Bob Jenkins who supervised the arrangements.

The colour scheme harmonised artistically with red and white colours of the club and the supplementary hues of multi coloured balloons and streamers.

The doors were manned by Messrs H. Pollard, B. Moore and F. Riddle.

The ticket box was in the capable hand of the captain of the Healesville team, Mr. C. Sinclair.

Warburton Mail 29 October, 1965 Move on highway HOPES of having a modern streamlined highway between Lilydale and Warburton are beginning to brighten.

Councillors will make a tour of inspection of the present highway on Friday November 5th.

Drive for water WOORI Yallock residents are launching an organised campaign to have water put on in their district.

A petition circulating in the area has been signed by more than 200 residents.

A public meeting has been called for Friday November 12 at the Woori Yallock Hall where residents plan to adapt a constitution, elect office bearers and discuss the water situation.

The proposals for the pipeline are as follows - commencing at Lusatia Park Rd, east along the highway as far as Launching Place school, west along the highway from Lusatia Park Rd to the Woori Yallock Hotel.

Fuelling climate change LAST week the Minister for the Environment approved the controversial Adani coal mine.

Giving this mine the green light suggests it is OK for the environment.

Everyone knows that coal-powered climate change is already damaging a wide variety of environments around the world.

We also know that coal is a major source of air pollution and related health problems.

Environmentally, it is a no brainer that no new coal mines should be approved.

Exporting coal is also wrong morally.

It is unethical to sell a product that we know is damaging to the health of present and future generations.

The Adani mine is just short-term gain for long-term pain.

In south-east Australia, we will experience this pain directly through more droughts and hotter, drier summers and an increased number of extreme bushfire events.

Healesville draws last blood

By JESSE GRAHAM HEALESVILLIANS will no longer be able to donate blood in town, with the Red Cross’ mobile blood donation service visiting the town for the final time last week.

People lined up at the Healesville Senior Citizens Hall from 19-21 October for the final blood service in Healesville, following an announcement earlier this month that the service would be winding up.

Donors played musical chairs, going from a waiting area with forms, to talk to blood service staff, before hopping up on medical tables to donate blood and later having a drink and a bite to eat.

Toolangi resident Erica Stryk was one of the long-term visitors donating blood for the last time on Wednesday 21 October.

Ms Stryk said Wednesday’s donation was her 56th blood donation since she had turned 18.

When asked why she donated blood, she put it simply - “I’ve got it, and it’s no skin from my knees.”

“And it’s useful,” she added.

“It’s not a big deal - it’s a prick in the arm, and then you just lay there.”

She said she had known someone who had to receive a blood transfusion, though she was already a donor at the time.

“It helps to know that it’s made good use of,” she said.

State Donor Services manager Maureen Bower said over the last 13 years, enough blood had been donated through the Healesville service to be used for 27,000 patients But a blood service spokesperson said the mobile service, which had visited the town quarterly for 13 years, would no longer visit Healesville due to less demand for red blood cell donations.

“Currently, Australia’s demand for

By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Valley wines have again been recognised as a cut above the rest, taking out half of the trophies at this month’s Royal Melbourne Wine Awards.

The 2016 trophy winners were announced on Thursday, 15 October, with Innocent Bystander taking out the Trevor Mast Trophy for Best Shiraz with its Mea Culpa Syrah, 2014.

Coldstream Hills’ Reserve Chardonnay, 2014, received the Francois De Castella Trophy for Best Young White, while the Victorian Trophy for White Wines of Provenance went to TarraWarra Estate’s Chardonnay, 2014, 2008 and 2004.

Oakridge Wines’ Local Vineyard Series Barkala Ridge 2013 Chardonnay received the Douglas Seabrook Trophy for Best Single Vineyard Wine, and Yarra Valley wines were awarded 83 medals at the awards - 13 of which were gold, 27 silver and 46 bronze.

Innocent Bystander winemaker, Steve Flamsteed, said the trophy was one of the winery’s most prestigious to date.

“We’ve won a few competitions and a few trophies, but I think this is the most important, for shiraz particularly,” he said.

Mr Flamsteed, a winemaker for 36 years, said the namesake of the award was a guru in the

world of winemaking.

“The guy that the trophy is named after, Trevor Mast, is a bit of a guru of ours, certainly a guru of mine,” he said.

“He planted Shiraz in The Grampians, along with a bunch of other people, and began to make really perfumed, pretty shirazes, that still had plenty of body and plenty of weight, but had a whole other spectrum of flavour.

“We used to visit him when we were young students, because this wine was so incredibly made.”

Mr Flamsteed said the Mea Culpa Syrah 2014 was a “bright and peppery, and highly per-

fumed” wine, made in a single vineyard.

“It’s a single-vat wine, on a single vineyard parcel, on a single site, so it’s very unique,” he said.

He said that awards such as those in the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards helped to promote the Yarra Valley’s wineries to an international market.

“In Australia, there’re 22 million people, and you only have access to a certain proportion of that population,” he said.

“If you want to be a really successful winery, you have to also be looking outside Australia - the world is your market now.“

Kinders get some cash

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS FOUR kindergartens in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges have received over $45,000 in funding grants from the State Government to improve their building and IT infrastructure.

State Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos said over 350 kindergartens would share in $2.6 million worth of grants to improve their services and facilities.

“These upgrades will create better playrooms, as well as giving our youngest Victorians access to technology that will form part of their education for years to come,” she said.

All Saints Preschool in Yarra Junction, the Woori Yallock Preschool, Marysville and District Kindergarten, and Talaskia Child Care Centre in Upper Ferntree Gully were awarded the grant money announced on Tuesday 13 October.

Kindergartens who have been awarded grant money have received up to $25,000 for minor expansion works, up to $10,000 for minor refurbishment works and up to $1500 in IT grants.

In a written statement, Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said these grants would improve early childhood education and lead to more effective learning.

“As a parent of two young chil-

dren, I know the importance parents place on our local kinders needing to be up to speed with the latest technology so our kids have opportunities to try different ways of learning,” she said.

These grants form part of the Labor Government’s $50 million investment in the early childhood sector through the building and upgrading of kindergartens and children’s centres across Victoria.

Letting it all hang out for possums

A group of four antilogging protesters gathered on Friday at Fernshaw picnic ground along the Black Spur for a cheeky demonstration.

The group gathered at about 11am and stood by the roadside, bearing signs promoting a proposal for a new national park and against logging in the area.

After observing a number of fully-laden logging trucks travelling towards Healesville, the group stripped off and covered themselves with their signs after noon, when hearing a heavy engine roaring around the corner.

However, the truck driver greeted by the naked (albeit covered) protesters was for Bark King, a Montrose-based mulch business.

The group cheered and laughed as the truck passed, before putting their clothes back on and gathering for lunch, while they waited for other protesters to arrive.

The national park proposal, the Great Forest National Park (GFNP), involves establishing a national park in the Central Highlands - a measure that would bring an end to logging in the Toolangi area, which is the home of the critically-endangered Leadbeater’s Possum.

The proposal is being fiercely debated between environmental groups and proponents of the timber industry, and the future of the possum is yet to be discussed by an industry taskforce being organised by the Victorian Government.

By KATH GANNAWAY POLICE from around the Yarra Valley swooped on an illegal burn-out fest in Hoddles Creek last week, impounding two vehicles and issuing defect notices and fines.

Police received numerous reports of as many as 100 cars gathered at Ship Rock Falls in Gembrook-Launching Place Road at around 9pm on Friday, 17 October, with several drivers doing burn-outs.

Senior Constable Rob Firns of Warburton Police said 10 police units responded to calls made to triple-zero by members of the public attempting to use the road.

“They reported multiple vehicles doing burnouts with other vehicles blocking the road, attempting to create a drag strip or burn-out pad on the road,” he said.

“Generally with these events, there are a minority of people engaging in the burnouts and a significant number there as onlookers.”

Sen Const Firns said it attracted people from all over eastern Melbourne, with many from the south east including areas such as Pakenham, Cranbourne and Narre Warren.

He said police, from past experience of similar events, responded with a targeted approach that involved a large number of police.

In this instance units from the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol, Yarra Glen, Healesville, Warburton, Yarra Junction, Lilydale and Mooroolbark, and the Police Canine Unit were brought in.

Police observed one vehicle doing burnouts and vehicles were checked for roadworthiness.

“We identified two vehicles, one of which was impounded for hoon driving, second vehicle a repeat suspended driver who had his vehicle seized and impounded as well.

Sen Const Firns said no-one was identified as being intoxicated but said he believed the prompt police response prevented any escalation in behaviour.

“There are places people can go to engage in that sort of driving behaviour in a controlled environment,” he said.

“A public road is not one of those places.”

Anyone who witnesses anti-social or dangerous driving should immediately phone triple-zero to assist a prompt police response.

Festival has everything under the sun AS THE sun sets on Wandin on Friday, 27 November, Christmas festivities will be in full swing.

The retailers of Wandin Shopping Centre and community groups are once more hosting the annual Wandin Sunset Festival.

As always, they’re inviting local people of all ages to join in the fun and excitement.

If previous years are anything to go by, there will be lots to see, do, eat and enjoy.

More than 60 market stalls will provide a great opportunity for guests to support local groups and businesses, as they work their way through their Christmas gift list.

Also during the evening, the CFA will be demonstrating the jaws of life on a vehicle.

The festival will run from 5pm to 9pm.

Organisers hope to see all their local school families and families from in and around the Yarra Valley to be part of the community festival.

The event is proudly organised by Wandin Traders and Community Groups and sponsored by the Yarra Ranges Council.

Take a big step back in time THE Historic Commercial Vehicle Club (HCVC) is holding its 34th Annual Historic Commercial Vehicle Show on Sunday, 8 November, at the Yarra Glen Racecourse.

This year will be the second for the show at Yarra Glen.

With this being such a great venue, and after such a successful show last year, the club has decided to hold shows at Yarra Glen for the next 10 years.

On exhibit will be an extensive display of 260-plus trucks, buses, tractors, stationary engines and remote-control trucks - an impressive show for all enthusiasts.

There is a jumping castle for the kids to enjoy, and an array of food and drinks for sale.

Truck memorabilia stalls will be available, with interesting merchandise that can be purchased for anyone with a trucking interest.

Raffle tickets will be sold on the day, with a chance to win a toolbox unit with cabinet valued at $1200 as the major prize.

The HCVC of Australia is the largest club for old trucks, fire engines and buses.

The club continues to grow, with its main base in Boronia and branches at Ovens Murray Goulburn, Ballarat and South Australia.

The club holds monthly meetings that all members and new people are welcomed, and encouraged, to attend.

The club is very passionate and enthusiastic about the club events

All the work of women

By KATH GANNAWAY THE work of more than 40 Country Women’s Association members, along with contributions from other community craft groups from around the Yarra Valley feature in Home Comforts to the Front, a patchwork and textile exhibition that opened at The Memo in Healesville on Friday night.

Presented by the CWA’s Wanallock Branch, it’s a WWI Centenary exhibition that looks at a very different aspect of the war, focusing on the work and the role of the women back home.

It’s a little-known story presented through contemporary pieces and treasured family WWI mementos.

Co-ordinator, Wanda McPherson, said thousands of

items of clothing, including socks and sheepskin vests were sent overseas on the troop ships.

The exhibition includes contemporary textiles and original hand-made items that were sent to husbands and family members to provide comfort while they were overseas.

Original WWI knitting patterns will be presented as well as reproductions of these items that demonstrate the skills of the artists.

Mrs McPherson said many of the exhibits have personal stories attached to them and added that researching and making the items had been an emotional undertaking for many of the women.

She said the exhibition was an eclectic collection that would appeal to people of different ages and interests.

YARRA Glen Primary School will host an evening of entertainment with its annual twilight market.

Heartland Church Senior Pastor Mike Baimbridge said the market, organised by students and staff, was an initiative by the school to teach students about commerce, business and handling money.

The students will run their own stalls at the market, selling goods and food to visitors, while community groups will run their own information stalls or activities.

Mr Baimbridge said Yarra Valley FM, HICCI (Healesville Interchurch Community Care), Yarra Glen police, Yarra Glen CFA, (Glen.) Youth Group and the Men’s Shed would all be at the market.

“The whole idea, I guess, is to bring those partners together as well as have a couple of hours of community celebration,” he said.

Food and beverages will be on sale on the evening and activities such as sack races may be on the cards although Mr Baimbridge said the final details were still being organised.

“A lot of exhibitions and events throughout the early part of this year have focused on the major role the men played and the conflict and I think now we can step back and reflect on the contributions women made,” she said.

The exhibition was funded by the Federal Government ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program and was officially opened by Casey MP, Tony Smith.

Mrs McPherson thanked both the Federal Government and Yarra Ranges Council for supporting the project, which she said had enabled it to be presented as a free exhibition.

Dying Girl’s slow death ME AND Earl and the Dying Girl is an acclaimed indie film with a big heart but a poor judge of character.

Withdrawn high-school senior and amateur filmmaker Greg (Thomas Mann) is pushed into a friendship with Rachel (Olivia Cooke), a classmate who has been diagnosed with leukaemia and finds himself caring about her far more than he ever expected.

I should have loved this movie. The performances are outstanding, the visual style is lush and the film is bursting with love for classic cinema, including frequent references to the great German director/artistic wacko Werner Herzog.

But Me and Etc. feels emotionally lukewarm due to a severe, foolish imbalance of its main characters.

Anti-heroes are an established and fascinating species of character, but Greg is so weaselly, sullen and unambitious that he becomes insufferable to watch.

Furthermore, he only de-

velops because other characters admonish or force him to, which deprives him of agency.

Rachel is a sweet character and her slow, inexorable death (and its toll on her self-image) is heartbreaking, but we see far too little of her to receive the full intended impact. Earl (Ronald Cyler) is also a fairly superficial presence in the overall plot.

With a truly terrible protagonist sinking what would have otherwise been a touching film, Me And Earl And The Dying Girl needs more of the dying girl and less of the “me”.

YARRA Valley residents and visitors from further afield flocked to the Healesville Railway Station over the weekend for the Healesville Heritage Festival.

The festival, which ran on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October, saw vintage trucks, engines and cars fill the grounds at the station, taking visitors back in time with displays, exhibits and entertainment.

Steam machines weren’t the only thing on display, with interesting vintage vehicles on display, including Peter and Linda Dickenson’s pink tractor, painted for breast cancer awareness.

FRIENDLY homes and animal lovers are being sought to help foster an influx of kittens being brought to Animal Aid over the Christmas period.

Animal Aid CEO Mark Menze said that staff and foster carers were rapidly preparing for “kitten season” - the time of year where people surrender or abandon a huge amount of cats and kittens to the shelter.

“They come in through various ways - public finds, people will find kittens and bring them in, or rangers will find kittens that have been dumped, or people surrender kittens when their cats have a litter,” Mr Menze said.

“Typically, they’re underweight - anything from a couple of weeks old or up.”

In the last financial year, Mr Menze said 18 guinea pigs, 31 rabbits, 71 cats and 611 kittens were fostered out through Animal Aid - with a total of 23,984 foster care days recorded in the year alone.

This is where foster carers come in.

Mr Menze said that foster carers took care of the kittens or other animals until they were between eight to ten weeks old,

“A lot of it is about socialisation for the animal - kittens want to play, cats want to roam, so being in someone’s home is the ideal environment, and they can get used to kids and other animals,” he said.

“I’m speaking first-hand, because my wife and I foster a lot of cats and kittens.”

In the lead-up to the season - which runs from November to June - Animal Aid will be running an information night at its Coldstream shelter from

6.30-8.30pm on Thursday, 29 October.

At the meeting, Animal Aid’s head vet, Dr Adele Scannell and shelter cattery manager, Lynne Bell, will speak about how to care for the animals and monitor their health, as well as other information about fostering.

“We have a few foster carers that might drop off over the course of the season, and so we need to regularly recruit and keep on top of it,” Mr Menze said.

Moore shines for Stars YARRA Valley Ladies Cricket team played Pakenham Upper Toomuc last week, with the girls coming home with their second win for the season.

The Stars won the toss and elected to field, P.U.T. got off to a shaky start giving a few chances in the field.

However, the girls were unable to hold onto the catches as they had done the week before, seeing captain Downes and Caruana both making half centuries.

But once they did make the breakthrough, they were able to get through the order fairly convincingly.

An undefeated century

by Donna Moore finishing on 101 not out was the highlight of the day.

Donna opened the batting and carried her bat through to the end of the innings; her shot selection and experience showed in her approach as she built her innings.

She was also excellent with the ball, taking 3/20 off 10.

Bloods are in box seat

By PETER DOUGLAS TWO-DAY cricket kicked off in the Yarra Valley last Saturday, and the batsmen brought their patience in a day of dogged cricket.

Healesville bounced back from the disappointment of last weekend’s dual losses, with a commanding batting performance against Hoddles Creek.

The battle before tea was one of patience from both sides, as the Bloods looked to establish a position from which they could attack.

Against some consistent bowling, the top order did an excellent job of keeping things intact; and with the score at 1/80 at the break, they had successfully negated the new ball and looked set to cash in.

Missing from the first couple of rounds, Adam Violi (72) and Brian Scanlon (59) proved their worth to this line-up as their experience and stroke play quickly had the score ballooning at a rapid rate.

Jeremy Derix (3/34) and Nick Lawlor (3/69) did their best to try and stem the flow, but the old adage of 'wickets in hand’ allowed some freedom in the batsmen coming to the crease.

When stumps were drawn, Healesville had built an imposing score of 8/269.

Hoddles Creek will have to bat well to reach the target and will rely on their established stars to carry the load.

Their top-order has begun the season well and they will be confident of chasing the total, if they can get themselves into the innings.

On the other hand, Healesville will be cock-ahoop after their best batting display in some time.

One would think they are in the box seat.

Warburton-Millgrove and Seville battled it out in a tough day’s cricket at Warburton.

The home side batted most of the day against some steady bowling from the Blues.

David Lever looked threatening early and raced to 38, but his dismissal stunted the Burras’ innings somewhat.

Generally regarded as a fringe player, Jeremy Lewis showed that he is ready to step up to A Grade after a run-making season in RA Finger Trophy last season.

His innings of 63 provided some much-needed backbone to an otherwise disappointing innings.

Warburton-Millgrove would be disappointed they could not capitalise on some solid starts; and although they reached a good score of 208, deep down they would’ve been hoping for more.

With an experienced bowling line-up, Warburton-Millgrove have themselves in front of this contest and they will be counting on some early strikes to put a young Seville batting line-up under pressure.

The batsmen on the other hand will know a good start, and some patient batting, will be key to giving the chase a real shake, and that the score is far from one that is impossible to chase.

In the final game of the round, Woori Yallock showed they are going to be a tough team to wear down as they took the honours on day one against Mount Evelyn.

Mount Evelyn opened the contest with the bat.

In a patient display on a slow ground, the Rovers did their best to set up a large total, but threw wickets away at crucial times, leaving them short of a significant score.

After a useful opening partnership, captain Damian Cupido (40) looked as if he was set for a big day, but with his wicket falling when set for the race to the finish, the Rovers innings lacked punch as the remaining batsmen were caught between caution of a collapse and adding vital runs to the score.

Chad Witherdin (21) and Jesse Fraser (29) added some healthy blow and the young tail held things together.

But the nagging, and disciplined, bowling of Dan Mock (5/46) and Ben Hayes (3/62) proved the difference in keeping the score under 200.

The Rovers would be happy in all but batting out the day, but they know that 172 is short of the mark.

Having said that, it is still a tricky total to chase.

If Mount Evelyn can return the favour with some patient bowling, and take consistent wickets, then it’s game on, but they will be aware that if they give this strong, and at times brutal, Woori Yallock batting line-up an inch, they could be in for a long day in the field.
