“The Emergency Management Levy is imposed by the State Government to fund emergency services in Queensland and councils are required to collect this levy from ratepayers on behalf of the State Government,” he said.

“Council would need to undertake an analysis of rateable properties to understand how the broader application of the Emergency Management Levy would impact on

ratepayers in the Southern Downs.”

The Liberal National Party Government reformed the Urban Fire Levy to create the Emergency Management, Fire and Rescue Levy, which it introduced last year.

It was met with a mixed reaction at the time. Now in opposition, Liberal National Party leader Lawrence Springborg said the changes made by the State Government were unfair.

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council ratepayers face being slugged with higher rates notices after changes to the Emergency Management Levy (EML) in Queensland.

Although the changes will not affect everyone, local ratepayers will not be happy to see any additional hikes to their rates with the State Government now ordering the en-

forcement of the new EML. The State Government’s introduction and enforcement of the amendments mean ratepayers in the state will be charged the levy based on the number of lots they own within a prescribed property as opposed to the former system where the EML was applied per property.

Wild goose chase Casey’s tips

By DANE LILLINGSTONE A 17-YEAR-OLD Redcliffe male led Southern Down’s police officers on a wild goose chase yesterday.

Police in the region received a complaint about a car driving dangerously, about 3.50pm on Tuesday 13 October.

It was reported the driver was seen doing a burn-out and driving off. The incident is believed to have originated near Aratula and involved not paying for petrol and ended up with the teenager

leading Warwick police on a foot chase.

The vehicle is believed to be registered to different addresses with Yangan police visiting one of them before putting a notice out for the vehicle. Warwick police then investigated a residence at Allora where they observed the vehicle doing another burn out before speeding off before police officers could attempt to apprehend him. The vehicle was next spotted in Warwick where police observed the teenager walking back to the car. He noticed police approaching him

and starting running off. He then allegedly started scuffling with police before finally being brought down and arrested around 5pm.

He has been charged with six offences including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving unlicensed, stealing, obstructing police and public nuisance.

He was granted bail and will appear in Warwick Magistrates’ Court on 18 November.

Conference to hear council concerns

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) Annual Conference will be held from October 19-21 and Southern Downs Regional Council will be presenting a number of big local issues at the meeting.

The preliminary agenda for the conference has revealed that council will present a number of issues that have fronted newspapers in the Southern Downs over the past year.

Among the most pressing issues to be discussed will be how the mayor interacts with councillors during the yearly budget process, the first-past-the-post and preferential voting system for local elections, and a study on forced amalgamations.

Recent council meetings and councillor Jamie Mackenzie in particular have brought up concerns over the lack of time council was given to review the budget before it was voted on this year.

Council will present a recommendation that LGAQ push the State Government for a law to be introduced requiring the mayor to consult with councillors at least once before 31 March each year in the process of preparing the budget.

SDRC will present 12 motions at the LGAQ conference.

The LGAQ commented that the recommendation would ensure a longer consultation process on the budget.

“Local Government Act 2009, section 107A requires the annual budget to be adopted before 1 August for that financial year and the mayor to give a copy of the proposed budget to councillors at least two weeks for the meeting to consider adopting the budget,” LGAQ said.

Council will also put forward a motion in favour of scrapping preferential voting in place of first-past-the-post for both mayor and councillors in small local governments.

LGAQ confirmed that the State Government was aware of the issue but that it would not be reviewed until after the

March 2016 elections.

A push for an independent study into forced amalgamations will also be discussed with SDRC to request an independent study into the impacts on stakeholders since the amalgamations in 2008.

However LGAQ have noted that any such study would cost in the range of $400,000 to $500,000 with the bill to be shared across the amalgamated councils.

In 2008 local governments were reduced from 156 to 73 with subsequent de-amalgamations taking that number to 77. LGAQ said the survey costs would be shared between both the 42 amalgamated councils and the councils that did not change which would cost an estimated $5000-$6000 for SDRC.

Bike ride for a cause THE 1200 kilometre for Kids charity bike ride rolled into the Southern Downs on Saturday with a presentation at McNevins Hotel in Warwick.

This year, after travelling 162 kilometres from Ipswich, the riders marked the second day of their journey with stops at Laidley, Pilton and Allora before arriving in Warwick for an official team dinner on Saturday night.

The riders presented a Bilisoft LED Phototherapy System valued at $9680 to Warwick Hospital that will be used in the hospital’s maternity ward. The money is raised for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation.

The machine is used to help treat jaundice in babies. It is something that occurs in 50 per cent of full-term babies and 80 per cent or pre-term babies in their first week of life. If undetected, it can cause cerebral palsy, deafness and/or brain damage.

The Bilisoft LED Phototherapy System is used to treat jaundice, with the baby wrapped in the therapy blanket and kept at the mother’s bedside.

Warwick Hospital's director of nursing and facility manager Anita Bolton accepted the donation.

“We really appreciate the support the 1200kms for Kids bike riders and the Humpty Dumpty Foundation have given to the hospital over the past few years,” Ms Bolton said.

“The phototherapy device will be a very valuable piece of equipment to help newborn babies receive treatment for jaundice.

“We have around 200 babies a year born at Warwick Hospital and jaundice is a fairly common condition that we need to treat in some of these little ones.

“The beauty of this device is it’s a blanket so the baby doesn’t miss out on cuddles and bonding time while receiving phototherapy.”

McNevin’s Hotel has been supporting the bike riders for the past six years and again provided free accommodation to the riders and their support team.

This year marks the ninth year the ride has been held with the 1200 kilometre journey starting in Ipswich on Friday 16 October and continues after Warwick through Glen Innes, Armidale, Tamworth, Muswellbrook and Newcastle before finishing at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney on Friday 23 October.

A motorbike rider has been left with two broken legs, a broken pelvis and significant internal injuries after a crash on Thursday 15 October.

The crash occurred about 1.55pm when the driver lost control on a set of overtaking lanes travelling west on the Cunningham Highway at Clumber.

The man, in his 50s, was airlifted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane with serious injuries.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the incident.

“Queenslanders with more than one lot on their property will bear the biggest cost as they will be charged for each and every single lot instead of one charge per property.

“Before the election, Annastacia Palaszczuk promised there would be no new or increased taxes under her government. Now we know she has broken this promise.”

Mr Springborg also said that the Southern Downs Regional Council would shoulder the blame for any increase in rates due to the council’s responsibility for collecting the levy for the State Government.

“This is an unfair slug on ratepayers in my electorate,” he said.

“The changes will mean a considerable increase to how much some property owners are paying each year.”

The Southern Free Times contacted the State Government about the changes but did not receive a reply by the time of going to press.

Three people have been charged with drugs offences after two raids.

Stanthorpe and Wallangarra police executed a search warrant at a McGregor Terrace property at 2pm on Wednesday 14 October.

They found a number of drug related materials including approximately 50 grams of cannabis, five grams of ice, smoking utensils and almost $5000 in cash.

A 50-year-old man was arrested and charged with five drug related offences including supplying dangerous drugs.

Over the weekend police searched a property on Minasi Lane, Amiens, where they arrested two people after they found a quantity cannabis and smoking utensils.

An 18-year-old male and 25-year-old female were charged.

IT’S official, the 2015 Warwick Rodeo and Campdraft has begun.

The first official event kicked off on Monday and will continue through to Sunday 25 October.

Alongside the rodeo and campdraft competitions, the streets of Warwick will be overflowing on Friday with the Rodeo Street Carnival from 5.30pm to 9pm.

Palmerin Street will host rides, live entertainment and food stalls as locals and tourists pack the main street for one of the biggest events of the year.

Then on Saturday the action doesn’t stop with the street parade kicking off from noon through Palmerin Street. It will be Warwick’s opportunity to get a glimpse of the Rodeo Queens and local businesses and clubs.

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has put an end to any ideas of changing its bin collection system with a contract in place until 2018.

Concerns have been raised over the merits of collecting rubbish bins weekly and recycle bins fortnightly and whether this could be done less frequently to save ratepayer money.

The council’s planning and environment director Ken Harris said there were no plans to change rubbish collection arrangements.

Fears of river disaster

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THERE are fears that an abandoned silver mine in Texas could result in dangerous chemical spills into the Dumaresq River.

The company behind the silver mine in Texas went broke this year leaving behind four large storage ponds containing contaminated water. These ponds are currently still abandoned and there are fears that heavy rainfall could cause an overflow, sending the chemical-laced water into the Dumaresq River.

The company went broke in July leaving dozens of locals out of work but fears were raised after a site inspection found management issues surrounding storage of contaminated mine water and drainage deficiencies.

Councillor Vic Pennisi said he was not concerned any spill would affect water in the Southern Downs.

“It runs west. Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t believe it would affect the Southern Downs. I also don’t think the river connects to our water sources,” he said.

The Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) confirmed that water stor-

age ponds on the mine site contain cyanide and elevated levels of copper, iron, manganese, zinc and nickel.

The department was quick to respond to the reports.

“EHP is working towards ensuring the Texas Silver Mine onsite water storages have sufficient freeboard to contain rainfall runoff, particularly ahead of the wet season later this year,” a statement said.

“To reduce the risk of a spill, some pond water has been transferred to other onsite storage facilities with larger capacity.

“In coming weeks, the pumping system will be replaced with more robust infrastructure to manage the poor quality water onsite. The new pumping system will allow for larger volumes of poor quality water to be transferred across site.

“Other options for future management of the site are being explored and include the option of a private sale.”

“There are around 15,000 abandoned mines in Queensland; most of them are very small but some of them are causing major financial and environmental concerns.

“The clean-up bill from the Texas silver mine is estimated at almost $10 million while the government has a financial assurance of only about $2 million. This public liability is echoed state-wide as the State Government has financial assurances of only $5.3 billion to cover a potential cost for rehabilitation of all mines which is as much as $50 billion, according to experts.”

Downs hospitals cut wait times, with steady improvement

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service (DDHHS) has released its annual report, showing steady improvements in services over the 2014/15 period.

According to the report, elective surgery waiting times have been cut and brought into line with national targets while nine out of 10 patients admitted were admitted to a ward,

transferred or discharged within four hours.

Board chairman Mike Horan said the health service’s annual report showed their services were getting better every year.

“Our staff have worked consistently to reduce waiting lists for our services, and improve timeframes for patients to receive the care they need, while also maintaining a focus on quality and safety,” Mr Horan said.

“For the second year in a row, DDHHS provided more services than funded to do under our contract with the Department of Health.”

Based on the 2014/15 period, Darling Downs hospitals see 197 people a day discharged from DDHHS facilities after receiving in-patient care, 409 people a day treated in DDHHS emergency departments, 728 elective surgeries and 254 babies delivered a month.

Hospitals in the Darling Downs have achieved national targets for recommended surgery times.

In brief ATO scam warning QUEENSLAND Police have warned of a new phone scam involving callers claiming to be from the Australian Tax Office.

There have been reports of people claiming to be from the ATO and informing victims that they had committed taxation offences and were required to pay back what they owed.

They have been known to threaten victims with imprisonment if the amount they request is not paid.

QPS would like to remind everyone that ATO will never contact them in this manner and request funds to be deposited into an account.

Anyone who receives a similar phone call should refer it to the Australasian Consumer Fraud Taskforce on 1300 795 995 or visit www.scamwatch.gov.au.

Purse snatcher at shops A 25-YEAR-OLD Westbrook man has been charged over a purse stealing incident at Rose City Shoppingworld on Saturday.

The incident is said to have occurred about 12.30pm after the man allegedly stole the purse from another customer.

He has been charged with one count of stealing and will appear in Warwick Magistrates’ Court on 18 November.

Stanthorpe races aftermath STANTHORPE police have reported that on Saturday night, following the races, they charged several people with public nuisance in the CBD. Unhappy campers Further to the letter from John and Robyn Griffith (SFT, 15 October), it is no secret that people who avail themselves of free camping opportunities are very happy to support local businesses.

It is also well known that overpriced caravan parks are often very well patronised, although some proprietors like to cry poor and hate the thought of some campers not supporting them.

Since the free camp south of Stanthorpe was closed due to the lobbying from a caravan park owner, one can only guess at how much local businesses have lost because, the fact is, many travellers will simply bypass RV unfriendly towns and move on to where they are welcome.

No doubt the recent caravan clubs stay at the Stanthorpe showground would have put a considerable amount of money into the local economy.

SDRC needs to look at the overall picture and decide whether to support a selfish minority or all businesses.

On a recent trip of over two months, mainly free camping in north Queensland, my wife and I made a point of supporting friendly towns and not stopping at or bypassing unfriendly ones.

So many employers today have opted to remove fulltime employees and replace them with part time or casual employment.

Shift work can often compensate for this downturn in permanent fulltime work.

Homestead memorial to the spirit of the pioneers With the news recently of the illness and passing of one of those people that one is honoured to have met, this writer took out my huge history of Glengallan Homestead.

Mrs Joan Deuchar, whose name reminds us all of the builder of Glengallan bearing the same name, along with her daughter Gloria Craig (Deuchar), came to visit one day in November 1998 and I honour them both here.

My work for Glengallan began in 1994 and continued at the sales table until 1996 when a foot injury had me retire.

However in January 1997 a mass walkout of the entire team of volunteers had me return as tours co-ordinator.

help, the arrival of two special family descendants all the way from Murwillumbah in New South Wales, along with their family friend Danny Daniels, was to allow tours to continue apace.

To see Gloria busy on whatever task was needed was to see the first Deuchar descendant since John who built the homestead, a sight to behold.

Together with her mother Joan they gathered strawberries from the leftovers in the fields in Murwillumbah, turning them into jam as fundraising continued.

They were alongside me when, for reasons impossible to comprehend, the homestead was closed down.

Passion for life

By DANE LILLINGSTONE ONE local man’s passion for gardening stems back 75 years and he’s still going strong today.

Charles Shann - or Charlie as he is known to those close to him - first started gardening when he was five-years-old after his mother gifted him his first garden bed.

“My mother was a great gardener and her mother was a great gardener and in those days we had great big properties and huge gardens and plenty of help, it was very easy to garden,” he said.

Mr Shann’s passion was ignited that day and has since blossomed into a string of acknowledgements in gardening competitions.

The 107th annual Spring Flower Show was held at St Mary's on Thursday and featured 345 entrants. Mr Shann has been entering the competition for the past four years.

Out of his 30 personal entries, he took home 18 firsts, eight seconds, and one third with only three of his entries not placing.

Originally from far north Queensland, he would come to Warwick in 1977 and has been here ever since. He said gardening was something that has run in the family.

“My father used to make a terrible fuss and go on and call me a bloody sis for gardening,” he said.

“When I went to Europe I was amazed to find how many of my father’s family were great

Mr Shann said his lifelong passion was simply relaxing.

“I think it’s relaxing. If you’re furious about something and you go and get your hands in the dirt, I think it takes the stress out of your system,” he said.

“It is one of my passions and I love design.

“My wife doesn’t garden, it’s just me.”

Charles’s wife Rowan was also quick to point out it was all her husband’s work.

“I have nothing to do with it,” she said.

She also wanted nothing to do with having her photo taken but Charles wouldn’t have it any other way.

Local attraction is up for award

By DANE LILLINGSTONE LOCAL attraction Lawdogs will be competing for a top tourism award next month.

Stanthorpe’s Lawdogs Australia will join five other Southern Queensland region tourism operators at this year’s annual Queensland Tourism Awards, hosted by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC).

Lawdogs will up for the Tourist Attractions category and is one of 156 entries in the Queensland Tourism Awards.

Established in 2011, Lawdogs Australia’s ‘A Dog Show with Bite’ is a working dog kennel open to the public offering a one-hour live show of canine law enforcement demonstrations and training in areas of protection, detection, agility and obedience.

Lawdogs Australia owner and operator Matt Hibberd said

the business had evolved steadily over the past few years.

“We aim to educate the public on what goes into service dog training through an entertaining show which encourages the audience to get involved and share in their training journey,” Mr Hibbert said.

“Visitors have the unique opportunity to get up close and personal with our detection dogs by hiding training packages and then watching as they find and indicate where it is hidden.

“The last two years has seen ‘A Dog Show with Bite’ evolve into a successful product for the business and we are focused on growing the business and its services to ensure its long-term viability and increase tourism for the local area.”

This will be the first year they have entered the awards

and said they would go a long way for recognition in the tourism industry.

“The process of compiling and writing a submission, combined with the judges’ site visit, are great for self-evaluation of the business,” he said.

“We aim to highlight the uniqueness and value of our show and will hopefully be rewarded through the Queensland Tourism Awards program.

The Queensland Tourism Awards are hosted by Queensland Tourism Industry Council and presented in partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland and the Queensland Government.

According to the awards, tourism in Queensland contributes $23 billion to the economy and employs 241,000 people.

They’re back in business

Billy cart fever fun THE inaugural Billy Carts on the Border was held near the border of Wallangarra and Jennings on Saturday 17 October.

Organiser Brian Springborg said that while the first event had suffered from growing pains it had received strong feedback from the community.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to really enjoyed, everyone had a great time, they all congratulated us on it.

"I’ve already been asked about when the next one is,” he said.

Showcase of horsy history THE 14th annual Heavy Horse Day was held by Mick Bradford at his property at Yangan on Sunday.

Agricultural heritage equipment was on display and in action with demonstrations, stalls and displays.

The website describes it as “an event to showcase farming equipment from the 1800s and 1900s in the days when the horse power was really the power of the horse”.

There was machinery on display that dated back as far as the 1880s with many in attendance amazed at just how much farming and productivity had changed.

There were examples of farming equipment from the Sunshine Harvesters Works, Massey Harris, International Harvester Company, McCormick Deering and other manufacturers.

Proceeds from the event are donated to RACQ CareFlight with past events raising as much as $5000.

NATHANIAL Leigh would like Southern Downs residents to get involved and help the Red Frogs for this year’s schoolies week.

Red Frogs have been synonymous with schoolies celebrations, offering a range of services throughout the various schoolies weeks for close to 20 years.

They provide support in a variety of ways to school leavers during the celebrations including walking them home at night and cooking them food.

Nathanial will be volunteering for the first time at this year’s Gold Coast Queensland schoolies.

His advice for school leavers is to use common sense.

“Make sure to drink plenty of water and eat food and keep hydrated,” he said.

“To the parents, don’t panic, your children will be safe, there are a lot of organisations down there to make sure they’re having a safe time.”

Red Frogs would like to raise 10,000 pancake shakers for this year’s schoolies so that they can provide breakfast to school leavers.

Time to saddle up

By TANIA PHILLIPS YEE-HA - grab a cowboy hat, don some boots and head to Warwick this week as the annual Warwick Rodeo and Campdraft moves into top gear.

On the last full weekend of October every year, the nation’s top rodeo riders and the best broncs and bucking bulls gather for the Warwick Rodeo - known far and wide as “Australia’s Most Famous”.

At the same time, Australia’s top Campdrafters head to town to challenge themselves against fierce competition for top prizes and honours including the Gold Cup Campdraft - one of the longest running and most prestigious in the country.

Today, Warwick Rodeo and Gold Cup Campdraft attracts crowds in excess of 30,000 people with competitors and horses travelling from every mainland state to compete.

And while most of the action will centre on the showground - where competition is already underway - the event encompasses many and varied activities across the week.

by Bony Mountain Music Festival and the RSL. It will feature the Mounted Troopers, Warwick Pipe Thistle Band and 28 foot soldiers - representing those 28 young men who marched out of Warwick and enlisted in 1915.

Norma O’Hara Murphy from Bony Mountain has written and recorded a special song - ‘Dungaree March’ - which she will be performing on the night.

The 100-year anniversary of the march is very close and descendants of

the 28 who marched from Warwick and district will still be in the area. This will be a very moving ceremony so show your support while you’re at the Rodeo.

On Friday at 6pm there will be the Rose and Rodeo Festival Mardi Gras in Palmerin Street, which will include entertainment with Mike Oberle while back at the arena Lachie Cossor will take to the stage.

Then of course there will be the ever popular Rose and Rodeo Markets in down-town Palmerin on Saturday from 9am.

There promises to be plenty of stalls and fun for the crowds to enjoy in the lead-up to the grand parade at noon when all the colour and spectacle of the event comes to the centre of town.

This is always a colourful and unique experience and the perfect prelude to a top afternoon of campdrafting and rodeo action and an evening of entertainment including the Warwick Rodeo Australian Championships at 6pm on Saturday.

And then the weekend will culminate in the other big event - the final of the Pryde’s Easifeed Warwick Gold Cup at noon on Sunday.

Major prize donated Casey’s tips

ARTIST Judith EdwardsWhite has donated one of her scratchboard works as first prize in a fundraising raffle for The Stanthorpe Show Fine Arts Section.

Judith and friend Margaret travelled to Stanthorpe recently to deliver the work to Chief Steward Mary Rofe.

The raffle will be drawn at the 2016 Stanthorpe Show on the Saturday.

Prizes will also include wine, lavender gifts and handmade leather jewellery.

Tickets are available now from Laurie’s Larrikans art group which gets together to paint up the showgrounds every Thursday.

Judith has won many prizes and sold her work worldwide.

She began using this

art form in 2008 and says that she is now completely hooked.

The piece Watchful Eye will go to the winner.

Ms Rofe said the art form required a level of high technical skill.

“Modern scratchboard, or scraperboard as it is known, has been around since the 19th century and it is an illustrative technique which uses sharp tools to etch a design or drawing into a board covered in fine clay and coated with Indian ink,” she said.

“Scratchboard is considered by many artists to be one of the most difficult of all mediums as you cannot erase mistakes.

“It is also an extremely time consuming medium.”

THIS weekend the Warwick Potters will again be putting on their annual Rodeo Country Craft Markets.

On Saturday 24 October from 8am to 2pm Leslie Park will play host to more than 170 stalls along with jumping castles, slippy slides, face painting and other activities for the kids.

There will be a range of food on offer from homemade cooking to Mexican and European dishes to ice creams and churros.

Market co-ordinator Sue Creed said the markets would be a great opportunity for locals to showcase their goods and services to a wider audience.

“The markets are a great way for locals to promote their wares with half the stalls coming from the Southern Downs region,” she said.

“Most stall holders are regulars who have supported the markets for 30-odd years.

Local country music will be provided by Classic Kountry, John Miner, Norma O’Hara Murphy, the Warwick City Pipe Band and the Heritage Highlanders.

Mental health carers workshop ARAFMI Queensland, in conjunction with Lifeline Darling Downs, will be running an indulgence workshop for mental carers on 29 October.

The event will start at 9am at the Warwick Library with numbers limited to 10 carers.

Carer Support Worker for Arafmi Queensland Michelle Hoffman said organisers wanted to grow their groups in

the Southern Downs community.

“Arafmi offers a number of support services for carers, which includes a retreat house in Toowoomba overlooking the range.

“All our support is free, the retreat house is $20 a night per person, however it is all inclusive, including food,” she said.

“Arafmi also holds a support group for mental health carers on the third Thursday of every month starting at 10.30am at the Warwick Library.

“I would love to see the numbers grow in that group.

“They are a lovely, supportive group.”

Rodeo markets are back

ESTABLISHED in 1875, the Darling Downs Hotel - better known to locals as the Sandy Creek Pub, has country charm by the bucketload.

A pub has been on the site at 345 Sandy Creek Road, Allen, since 1875 when a timber building was built flat on the ground.

White ants eventually brought about the demise of the building. In 1913, a temporary bar was established in the paddock next door, while the current one was under construction. That 1913 building is the one from which the pub still operates.

But according to publican Gary Little it’s not just the building that brings the charm of the Sandy Creek Pub to life.

“Our place is different because of its country setting and our regulars everyone feels welcome,” he explained.

“We try to provide a meeting place with a warm country atmosphere.

“Our customers love the friendly atmosphere where the whole family can come to have a social outing.”

The pub is also the host to the now famous Sandy Creek Pig Races - an event that not only brings the community together but it also benefits local charities in the local area.

“My dear wife Elizabeth was involved in the organisation of the inaugural Sandy Creek Races in 2010,” Gary said.

“Not long after this, sadly she passed away. I did not feel inclined to have any more Pig Racing Events.

“However, the couple who initiated the Event, Terry and

Once you step through the door of the pub, situated in an outstanding country outlook just 10 kilometres from Warwick, it has that friendly community atmosphere and friendly staff including publican and Di Ramsey and Karla Benz who operate the kitchen.

“Di has been working at the Sandy Creek Pub for over 11 years. Karla has been working with Di for six years,” Gary said.

“They provide good wholesome meals. Our Pub is open seven days a week serving cold beer and light snacks such as pies and toasted sandwiches every day.”

And as well as what it offers now, the Sandy Creek Pub has a lovely colourful history for you to explore.

“When the original settlers to our area arrived from Ger-

many, among them was an entrepreneur by the name of Adolf Schmidt,” he said.

“Adolf thought a Hotel on the main road from Warwick to Goondiwindi would be a good business investment.

“He decided a business owner should have a name more befitting his new country so he changed his name to Adam Smith and set about establishing his Darling Downs Hotel.

“The hotel serviced the local district and the bullocky teams bringing wool and grain.

“In the 1960s, the highway to Goodiwindi was changed to bypass the pub but despite this it has managed to remain.”

These days it is open seven days a week from “around 10am to when the customers have left, or midnight - whichever comes first”.

Full menu service is available for the evening meal on Friday and Saturday evenings (6pm - 8pm) and Sunday lunch noon - 2pm). The menu covers items from hamburgers to steak, fish, chicken, mix grills and seafood baskets.

What’s On Sophie’s artwork on show BUNYA Mountains-based artist Sophie Sorella will add an artistic flair to this year’s Warwick Rodeo and Campdraft.

The Queensland artist, who specialises in western equine art, cattle and horses, will have her artwork on display at Rope N Ride store in Fitzroy Street all this week.

Sophie has exhibited in the USA and is just back from a painting trip to Africa.

While she usually chooses her own subjects, she does take some commission work.

TENTERFIELD Shire Council and Rotary will join forces to run a Graffiti Removal Day in the town on Saturday.

“The Graffiti Removal Day will draw attention to the problem of graffiti vandalism and encourages people to get involved in the removal and prevention of graffiti in their local area,” Mayor Peter Petty said.

Individuals and community groups are encouraged to join in and volunteer their time for a couple of hours on Saturday from 8.30am to 11am (NSW) to help to remove or paint over graffiti in Tenterfield.

Volunteers and events organisers will meet in the Council’s northern carpark, between the Council building and Foodworks at 8.30am.

Volunteers helping out on the day will be supplied with cleaning material, paint, safety equipment and training on how to safely remove graffiti.

Interested volunteers should turn up at the Council’s northern carpark at 8.30am on Saturday - bring your enthusiasm and covered shoes.

Big turnout for Cup THE Stanthorpe Cup has held another successful event on Saturday completing a quinella of big weekend racing on the Southern Downs following the previous week’s Warwick Cup. All eyes were on Stanthorpe’s Armstrong Park with its sole event of the year and a big turnout was welcomed with clear skies for a perfect day of racing.

President of the Stanthorpe Jockey Club Neil Brunckhorst said he was extremely pleased with the turnout.

“It was one of the best days we’ve ever had, bumper crowd, very good racing and very good fields,” he said.

“We had close to 2000 people, which was slightly up on previous years.

"It was probably one of the best ones we’ve had.”

Mr Bunckhorst said organisers would continue to look at improving facilities each year.

“This year we built new tie-up stalls, brand new, and received very good feedback from owners and trainers,” he said.

The Apple and Grape Ambassadors for 2016 were presented at the Stanthorpe Cup on Saturday.

Fun day fund-raiser on way

By JOYCE MARSH, WOODENBONG CORRESPONDENT PLANNING is well under-way for the 16th annual Woodenbong Rural Fire Brigade Golf Fun Day, on Sunday 1 November, at the Woodenbong Golf Club.

This fund-raiser event is always popular and everyone is assured of a good day as it includes the three-person ambrose golf match which kicks off at 9.30am (NSW) so why not come and have a bash, and why not come out and buy a Melbourne Cup horse in the Calcutta hysterically and boisterously auctioned by Paul McKey where the bidding becomes quiet frantic, as well

as buying tickets in the monster raffle which includes a myriad of donated prizes on offer.

The barbecue begins at 11am and club facilities are available.

The funds raised from the event are used for the Woodenbong Rural Fire Brigade’s needs for equipment that are not normally funded by the Rural Fire Service.

Thanks to the many sponsors who support this event and the visitors it attracts the local service remains viable and well equipped for action.

AS THE young fillies and colts paraded in their finery on Saturday at Armstrong Park and the keen and seasoned punters struggled to find winners among the myriad of form guides; ladies shared bottles of bubbles and everyone went about the business of enjoying a great day out. Only those with a keen eye would have seen one of the tougher sides of a day at the races. Jockey Damion McIntosh rode a great race to get Cover Up over the line for connections and those punters lucky enough to have been on the chestnut gelding in the third event.

When the runners returned to the enclosure, McIntosh slid from his mount and dropped to his haunches obviously in some distress and unable to unsaddle his mount for several minutes. He regathered and weighed in.

Correct weight was declared and there were smiles all round for the winners. It was a great ride from the heavy-weight rider who does not get many opportunities. There was good reason for his post-race distress. It was six months since he had ridden in a race although he is a regular track work rider for some of the bigger stables. Last Monday he was offered rides in Stanthorpe and in the ensuing five days had stripped off no less than six kilos to make the required weights of his mounts on Saturday.

The next time you vent over what you consider a poor ride from some jockey or bemoan having to let your belt out a notch or worry whether the outfit makes you look fat spare a thought for these blokes. Many of our lesser known jockeys and even some of those more recognisable faces do it this tough week in week out.

I tip my hat to Damion McIntosh who finished second on Quelle Beaute in the final event (another good ride). Well done. I hope more opportunities come your way. Your dedication to your chosen profession is what makes racing. It should be recognised not only a great sport but also a great leveller. Shame I was not on the winner though. Next time perhaps.

- Casey RECORD MEETING FOR STANTHORPE THE Stanthorpe Jockey Club kicked home another winner last Saturday with a record crowd attending the annual race meeting. Jockey Club President Chips Brunckhorst said the annual cup meeting, which coincides with Caulfield Cup Day, continues to grow in popularity. Perfect conditions, good fields and a great crowd combined to make it a great day out for locals and visitors who were treated to everything good about the Granite Belt.

The Cup was won in fine style by Dalbytrained gelding Writtenintherain. The Graeme Postle owned and trained seven-year-old, who has clocked up a half century of starts, was well ridden by Leanne McCoy coming with a welltimed run down the centre of the tricky Stanthorpe course to win by a comfortable margin on the line from the more fancied Baroness Zena and Going Going Gone. It was a girl’s day out for riders with all three placegetters ridden by the ladies who rode three of the five winners on the programme.

The meeting opened with the MJ Cleaners Stanthorpe Painting Services Maiden and despite not having started for some time, the grey filly Cassie Bleu - trained in Warwick by Rod Hilton - looked forward in condition. She skipped away in the straight to win by almost two lengths over her rivals. The filly started at the good odds of $5 and many punters with a keen eye were queuing to collect.

Locally bred Tycoon Ace was impressive winning the K & A Building QTIS class 2 Handicap and is a galloper that is likely to go on to better things judging by his win over Finnomony and Whatever Miss. Ridden by L Attard for John and Gail Harvey, the Tony Sears trained three-year-

Race three the Benchmark 55 over 1200m sponsored by the Country Club Hotel and Liquor Legends went the way of Cover Up ridden by Damion McIntosh. In a tight finish the six-year-old mare made the trip worthwhile for Goondiwindi trainer and owner Gary Thwaite. In a good finish the mare was doing her best work on the line overpowering Wylie who led the field up and was being hailed the winner at different stages down the straight.

The meeting wrapped up with the running of the Stanthorpe RSL Crisps Coaches Class 3 and was won by Ipswich visitor Doing Our Best and ridden by Faith Elliott for Lyn Paton.

While the action is over for another year for the record crowd, for Chips Brunckhorst and his hard working committee the clean-up was on in earnest on Sunday morning and the planning to make next year even bigger and better begins.

The Cup meeting continues to draw visitors from interstate and across Queensland. According to now regular Stanthorpe racegoer, journalist Bernie Pramberg who writes the Courier Mail column “For the Love Of the Game,” the Stanthorpe meeting is one of the must-do meetings on the Queensland Racing Calendar. There are few who would disagree.

AMATEUR BOXING MAKES A RETURN AFTER an eight year hiatus amateur boxing makes a return to the Stanthorpe Civic Centre this Saturday. The tournament will be hosted by the Stanthorpe Boxing Club with all the action getting underway at 5.00pm. Clubs from across Queensland and Northern NSW will be participating. They include Toowoomba, Sunshine Coast, Kingaroy, Deception Bay, Pittsworth, Rockhampton, Cunnamulla, Grafton, Kingscliffe, Tamworth, Coffs Harbour and Woodburn.

It should be an exciting night of boxing with local fighters including Dean Dunbar and Ty Miller at 30kg, Dylan Dunbar, Kiane Doorley and Mackenzie Martin at 40kg, Marco Kent and Mason Picknel at 55kg looking forward to competing in front of their local crowd. The hard hitting Jamie Dunbar returns to the ring after a 10 year lay-off. Weighing in at 85kg he will face Richard Dunn of Coffs Harbour in what is sure to be a tough contest.

The main bout of the evening will showcase Stanthorpe talent Adam Martin who will be fighting Tyler White of Woodburn. White currently holds the North Coast NSW Superheavyweight title and for fight enthusiasts this is a bout not to be missed. A bar and hot food available on the night. Tickets ($15) will be available at the door.

Tycoon Ace was a popular winner of the third event at Armstrong Park. score of 44 points. The win came in spite of the combination of some great tips and training from his playing partners.

Competition for those not getting a start at the races last Saturday was for a club sponsored Keith Green also had a great run returning to scale to pick up the runners-up prize after a countback relegated Greg Fraser to the minor placings. Fraser played a close to the pin shot at 3/12 to hold the pin all day while Bob Thorn, visiting from Wantirna, picked up both the pin at 17 and the pro pin at 1/10. Fred Wharton collected the remaining pro-pins at 5/14 and 9/18.

Youngster Hannah Reeves had more interest in golfing birdies than fascinators and feathers. She won the Ladies event with a score of 39 points just ahead of runner-up Neta Thouard who placed second with her score of 38. She also had the best approach shot in the ladies competition at 17. Kay Webb held the Ladies pin at 3/12.

With all the attention and focus returning to the Stanthorpe Golf Club and Stanthorpe Open this weekend, officials were pleased with the response of members to the working bee. The work completed will be a great help to the Greenkeeper Bill who has been flat out putting the final touches on the course. There is little doubt he will have come up with some interesting pin placements for the enjoyment of players.

Time sheets for the event are full and club officials wish to remind players to check their tee off times to ensure they are not left out due to lateness.

Saturday’s event is a medley 4BBB with a shotgun start at the earlier tee off time of 11.30am.

Registration should be completed by 11.15am at

the latest.

Sunday’s single event is an all-day affair with some groups playing at the earlier time of 6.30am.

BUSY WEEKEND AT 'GARRA THERE were plenty of options to keep golfers at the Wallangarra club happy during a busy weekend of golf. On Saturday in the Stroke event Jamie Purcell and his magnificent Callaway driver proved too strong for the rest of the field. Steven Hampstead finished in second place ahead of Scott Williams who took out the third placing.

Hampstead also bagged two pins shots on nine and the approach.

On Sunday the 36 hole Foursome Championships was played. Nett winners were Kevin and Scott Williams. Runners-up were Jamie Purcell and Peter Williams. Steven Hampstead and Gary Sutcliffe were the gross winners.

Pins were claimed at three (Peter Williams), nine (Thompson) Steven Hampstead was on song at 15. Re action at the ‘Garra this Saturday where the club will be holding the annual Paul Hampstead Memorial Stroke competition.

CHANGE OF PROGRAM THE muzzle loading shoot and centrefire event scheduled for last Sunday at the Inglewood Range could not be held due to unforeseen circumstances, however an impromptu pistol shoot was held making use of the new layout.

Peter Jones from Texas obviously found it to his liking. He proved too good for Tom Donald and Ross Jackson.

Both Angelo Maugeri and Mick Doorley figured in the run-downs. Terry Byrnes took the Pin Shot on the third while Keith Green picked up the Pro Pin after his good round on Saturday. Sneaking off with meat trays were Marg Locke and Craig Pearson.

Players are reminded that there is definitely no Sporters this Sunday due to the scheduling of the Stanthorpe Open. The following week (Saturday 31 October) is the Annual M & D Auto Day. LADY LUCK SMILES DRAMA and dodgy decisions abound as the World Cup heads to the pointy end of the competition. In another nail-biting finish, the Wallabies were lucky to come away with a win over Scotland in early hours of Monday morning. For those diehards who burnt the midnight oil it was a real edge of the seat finish as the ref ruled an offside penalty in the Aussies' favour in the dying moments of the game. Unfortunately if you are a follower of the Scotland side officials have admitted the ref made an incorrect call and should have awarded a scrum. While there is an old adage “Winners are grinners,” you have to feel for the Scots but we’ve all been there before - just ask the Cowboys' supporters. The result is in the scorebooks while the Pommie press is going into melt-down. No northern hemisphere team left in the tournament, the Scots robbed and the Wallabies undeserving of their place in the semis Michael Cheika’s reaction to the circus was refreshingly honest. “You win some you lose some.”

Although I suppose if you are on the right end of a dodgy call it makes it easier to be circumspect.

Chieka has also shouldered much of the blame for the Wallabies' below par performance against the Scots, promising a better prepared outfit in this weekend’s semi against the Pumas.

Not surprisingly South African referee Craig Joubert is unwanted this weekend for the semifinal games. Leading into the World Cup many would have considered it unlikely to see the Pumas advance to this stage of the tournament. They are perhaps the most improved side in World Rugby at the moment and have been quietly building towards this moment. The All Blacks have the favs target firmly on their back after thrashing the French in their quarter final and meet old foes South Africa in their semi. Although some would say the South Africans have been playing below par there is little doubt they will step up for the contest this weekend.

With Pocock and Folau set to return for the Wallabies this weekend, the Wallabies are showing their versatility. The Wallabies had lady luck on their side on Monday morning; let’s hope they can ride that luck all the way to the final. Will we see another epic Wallabies/All Blacks final? We will soon know. Another late night/early morning coming up for all the Union diehards and recently recruited fans.

ANOTHER WORLD CUP WHILE the RWC action played out at Twickenham, another World Cup was playing out closer to home. The Indoor Cricket Junior World Cup carnival is held every three years and a young man with a strong local connection was proudly wearing the green and gold for Australia. Harry Curley, grandson of the late Al and Margaret Cosmo of Pozieres, was named wicketkeeper in the Aussie side which played in the week-long tri national tournament against New Zealand and South Africa at Toombul. The event is held every three years and while the heady popularity of Indoor cricket in the '80s has waned, it remains a popular sport played at the international level. It complements the outdoor game with many youngsters playing both forms of the game. Sixteen teams compete across four divisions (Under-18 boys, Under-18 girls, Under-16 boys and Under-14 boys) with the hosts fielding both Australia and Australia A sides. The Australians made a clean sweep of the week long tournament winning all age groups.

Curley was one of five Queensland lads in the Australian side. All five have represented their state since playing Under-12s. With many players making the transition to the outdoor game the local branch of the Cosmo family might become ardent cricket fans as this young man’s career blossoms.

PLENTY OF ACTION FOR MALLET ENTHUSIASTS FOR those mallet sports enthusiasts playing in the Association Croquet competition there were a series of very close singles played this week. Andrea Denkewitz scored a narrow 24-23 win over Val Richardson while Carol Verwey and Margaret

Cover Up, under strong riding from Damion McIntosh, proved too strong for Wylie and Real Tricky over the finishing stages of the Country Club Liquor Legends Benchmark 55.

Dickenson scored (21) to head off Heather Widderick and Effey Russel (18). Dickenson had two breaks of three in her score while Russel played the shot of the day, scoring the hoop from the border. Jenny Tunbridge and Grace Howard played well for their 18 only to be narrowly overcome by Pat Schnoor 19.

Hoop Runners got their games underway at the earlier start time of 8.30am with teams selections done by draw for the doubles and pairs games. Dianne Wren and Judy Lock played Elaine Brown and Shirley Page in the opening game. Lock and Brown combined well to eventually take out a tight game 13 - 11; both scored nine hoops and each scored a hoop in one.

The game between the team of Teresa Pine and Val Fancourt and Shirley Page and Bill Golding produced another close finish. Evans and Golding won 13-12 in a game where there was some very even scoring. Fancourt top scored with eight hoops.

After the break some shuffling of teams was required with some players unable to play due to other commitments.

Shirley Evans drew to play two balls against Di Wren and Val Fancourt and was narrowly beaten 13 - 11. In this game Evans scored a jump shot and both Wren and Fancourt a hoop in one.

In the remaining game Golding and Brown defeated Pine and page 13-8. Elaine Brown top scored in this game with nine hoop while Teresa shot a hole in one.

The Gateball group were keen to put into practice all they had been taught by Keith McLeod the previous week when they hit the greens and

spent their first hour practising the different shots he had introduced before playing three games.

Scores were close in all games as players enjoyed working with different tactics. Their next tournament which will be held in Stanthorpe on November 21/22.

RASCALS DOWN INGLEWOOD AS local cricket in Stanthorpe took a back seat to the local race meeting last weekend, Warwick fixtures continued. Railway Hotel Rascals notched up a good win over their Inglewood rivals. Brad Johnson is in good form for the Rascals posting 68 in Saturday’s game. It is the batsman's second half century in as many games and his good form has much to do with the Rascals good start to the season having won two from three.

Rascals gave Inglewood a 163-run target to chase after batting first. In reply Inglewood looked to be in control but with the introduction of Liam Duncan in to the attack. The late change bowler took 4/13 from just six overs as Inglewood were dismissed 22 runs short of the required total with nine over remaining.

Meanwhile at Slade Oval Maryvale Condamine continued their good form. Both teams were assured of an early finish after a fine bowling performance by David Walker restricted Sovereign Animals to a score of only 69. Walker had a great day with the ball taking 5/12 from his 10over spell.

Maryvale were untroubled reaching the required total thanks in part to a fine knock of 46 from youngster Pat Bourke who has also begun the season in scintillating from with bat and gloves.
