Carers for crisis

By ERIN SOMERVILLE DOZENS of children on the Border are having to sleep in motels or travel hours away from their hometown due a shortage of foster carers in the area.

Each night in the north-east alone, around 106 children will spend a night in care.

In April to June this year, Upper Murray Family Care received requests for placements for 97 children, but only 62 could be taken in by carers.

Those who are turned away go into contingency, and have to spend nights in temporary accommodation facilities such as motels or travel to neighbouring regions where care may be available.

Upper Murray Family Care Foster Carer recruitment and assessment worker Jeanine Aughey said the region, which covered as far as Corryong, Benalla, and Mansfield, was in desperate need of more foster carers. “It’s not at all conductive or appropriate care for kids,� Ms Aughey said of children being placed in contingency.

“If kids can’t be in homes, the next best thing is foster care.�

The regional Upper Murray Family Care service has around 100 carers, but that figure still is not adequate to cater to the demand of children who need placements.

Last financial year the foster care program received 400 referrals with requests for care. On average, it received 34 requests for care each month.

With many carers often being ruled out due to illness or holidays, the shortage often became even more critical.

The service aims to match carers and their environments with children in need, taking into account age, gender, and special requirements.

With children as young as newborns through to 18 passing through the foster system, Ms Aughey said the more carers and diversity the service had the more successful a suitable foster placement could be found.

There is no specific requirements to apply as an adult carer, whether living in a rental or owning a home, having pets and other children, living alone, married, single, or in a samesex relationship, or having a varied stream of income, Upper Murray Family Care will take a wide demographics into consideration. “We don’t know what the magic number is but we need as many people as we can get that are appropriate. “We need carers from all different environments. “It’s more about the attitude and the satisfaction they get knowing they are helping make a child’s life better.�

AROUND 90 per cent of the information regarding your surroundings is processed through sight.

Now imagining that being taken away from.

That is the reality for many Border residents who have vision impairments, as Albury mayor Hen van de Ven discovered on Thursday.

To mark International White Cane Day, Cr van de Ven was blindfolded and relied only on a cane and the guidance of a Guide Dogs staff to make his way along Kiewa Street.

The annual day is a way of raising awareness of the importance of the white can and how it can aid mobility and independence in a person with vision loss.

“It is an extreme challenge, and takes an enormous amount of courage to get out of the door everyday and face the world by touch and sound,” Guide Dogs orientation and mobility instructor Warren Hawley said.

The team at Guide Dogs work with a mixture of clients, from six-month-old children through to the elderly, all who may have lost their vision for a number of reasons.

From learning to cross a road safely, learning to avoid tripping over bins, litter, overhanging tree branches, and furniture, and tackling stairs is just some of the work the team does to help give people more independence.

They also work with clients to help them best use their sense, such as touch and hearing, to improve their mobility and safety.

The number of people in need of support from Guide Dogs is expected to triple by 2020 as the population ages and lifestyle diseases such as diabetes lead to sight deterioration.

Guide Dogs NSW is a not-for-profit organisation and receives less than two per cent of its funding from the government.

A person doesn’t have to be totally blind to receive help from Guide Dogs, and anyone losing their sight early is encouraged to contact Guide Dogs early to reduce risk of falls, accidents, and depression.

Duo armed and dangerous

By ERIN SOMERVILLE A PAIR of armed and dangerous fugitives are still on the run after shooting at police on Friday.

The men, who police believe are Queensland father and son Gino and Mark Stocco, are believed to have stolen a Toyota Landcruiser near Holbrook on Sunday night and could still be in the area.

About 7pm on Sunday, the vehicle’s owner parked it on his property at Four Mile Lane, Little Billabong, about 18kms north of Holbrook, but found it missing at around 8am on Monday morning.

The vehicle is described as a 2013 white Toyota Landcruiser with distinctive white bullbars, with a 145-litre fuel tank and NSW registration plates BV7 0WP. An investigation has been launched and officers believe the Stoccos may have possession of the vehicle.

trol Command attempted to stop a silver Nissan Navara 4WD on the Henty to Cookardinia Road at Mangoplah. When the vehicle failed to stop, a pursuit was commenced and one of the men shot at the police car on Kreutzbergers Road. One of the bullets hit the front grill of the police vehicle, forcing the highway patrol car to stop.

The pursuit was temporarily terminated before it was resumed around 20 minutes later by other police vehicles. Again, the occupants of the Nis-

san shot at police, this time discharging a firearm at another highway patrol vehicle The pursuit was terminated near the intersection of Pulletop Road and Cheviot Hills Road at Pulletop, and police set up a command centre at the location.

No police were injured.

A large scale search of the location commenced on Friday night, and police located the

Nissan in bushland off the Hume Highway, about 5km south of Tumbarumba Road.

Strike Force Kalkadoon has been formed to manage the search and investigation, and comprises a large number of officers from local and specialist commands based in the southern region of NSW. Investigators are appealing for people to keep vigilant and report any fuel theft or sightings of the distinctive Toyota Landcruiser, that maybe displaying different registration plates.

In the most current photos police have on file, Gino Stocco is depicted as having grey hair, a grey beard and brown eyes. He is 58 years of age.

The most recent photo police have of Mark Stocco, depicts him as having dark brown, medium-length hair, a dark brown beard and brown eyes. He is 35 years of age.

Police are warning the public to contact triplezero (000) immediately if they see either of the two men or the Landcruiser. Under no circumstances should members of the public approach the men, who are considered armed and dangerous.

Arts community says thanks a million

By ERIN SOMERVILLE OVER $1 million will be used to fuel the arts sector in Albury following the State Government’s funding announcement on Monday morning.

LibraryMuseum, HotHouse Theatre, the Flying Fruit Fly Foundation, Murray Arts Inc, and Murray Arts Museum Albury (MAMA) will share in $1.4 million of the funding.

Albury MP Greg Aplin described his seat of Albury as a “hub of artistic talent and passion”.

The LibraryMuseum will receive $135,000 that will be paid out gradually between 2016 to 2018 to assist with touring and temporary exhibitions, learning activities, in-house curated exhibitions, and digitisation of priori-

tised objects in the collection.

HotHouse Theatre has received $155,000 for 2015, a further $165,000 next year, and $172,000 in 2017 and 2018.

The funding announcement for the theatre that totals $509,000 will allow the programming of five subscription season productions, generated by and with established and independent artists and companies.

The Flying Fruit Fly Foundation has received $110,000 for this year, and will receive funding of $114,000 in 2016 and $117,000 in 2017 and 2018, totalling $348,000.

The Foundation will continue to create ways for young people to engage in circus, develop young artists through training, creation and perfor-

mance, and deliver a circus program targeted at young Aboriginal people in the Albury region.

Murray Arts Inc will continue to receive $140,000 a year through to 2018, totalling $420,000. Areas of the Albury electorate will also benefit from funding to Eastern Riverina Arts and South West Arts, each receiving $420,000 over the next three years.

“I am proud our local arts organisations are receiving funding to support the innovative and high quality arts and cultural programs they are renowned for,” Mr Aplin said.

Victorian Highway Patrol members were conducting breath tests on Melrose Drive

when they stopped the white hatch-back car around 6pm.

The 52-year-old man told police he was on his way to deliver a pizza.

Jobs pain of glass BEECHWORTH based glass producer Sibelco has announced it will be closing operations in the town from December.

The company announced on Thursday 15 October that the Beechworth site was no longer viable following a significant decline in the demand for glass manufacturing.

There are nine employees at Sibelco’s Beechworth site, some of who will be staying for up to another two years to assist with cleaning up the site.

The company has confirmed it is looking to relocate Beechworth staff to other Sibelco operations where possible.

“At some of our other sites such as Lang Lang in Victoria and Glenshera in South Australia, we have been able to shift our market and operating focus to also include the sale of construction grade sands to offset the declining glass grade sand sales,” Regional Operations Manager at Sibelco Australia Prem Chand said.

Meetings with employees at Beechworth were held last week.

Volunteers up for tagging take-down

By ERIN SOMERVILLE ALBURY Council has spent over $130,000 removing graffiti from its own infrastructure in 2014/15.

It’s a problem local volunteers rallied together on Sunday to help stamp out as part of the State Government’s ‘Graffiti Removal Day’.

The movement, driven by members of the Rotary Club of Albury Hume, teamed up with volunteers to scrub clean graffiti hotspots such including Lavington Library, Young Street, Cod Lane, Dean Street shops, and Buchhorn Lane in Lavington.

Local Rotarian Terry Simmonds said community effort was needed to combat graffiti.

“Graffiti is a major problem which costs local businesses and households, NSW Government and AlburyCity millions of dollars each year,” he said.

“Graffiti Removal Day provides a great opportunity for individuals, community groups, sporting clubs, businesses and other organisations to join the fight against graffiti and make a real difference to the appearance of our local community.”

According to AlburyCity, the best way to manage graf-

fiti vandalism in the community is for every resident and business owner to remove graffiti straight after it appears.

The owner of the property is responsible for removing graffiti. The sooner it is removed, the easier it is to remove and the less likely it is that the graffiti will be repeated.

It is important to report graffiti to help police to catch the criminals who do it.

Use darker coloured materials or paints on fences.

Keep your property clean and tidy.

Remove graffiti within 24 hours, as it will reduce the tagger’s exposure and can make removal easier.

‘Wife beaters’ for shame

By ERIN SOMERVILLE MORE crisis accommodation, programs for re-offenders, and naming and shaming “wife beaters” are part of the plans in a new $60 million package unveiled on Wednesday by the NSW Government to tackle domestic violence.

As part of the plan, the government will invest $19.5 million in mandated behaviour change programs, the Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Pru Goward announced. The courses will be undertaken by medium to high risk domestic and family violence (DFV) offenders.

“More than one in five domestic violence offenders will end up in court convicted of another domestic violence

offence within two years,” Ms Goward said.

“These programs compel offenders to address their entrenched attitudes and behaviours which cause so much pain and trauma to families and our communities.

“We need to break the cycle of abuse, power and control by forcing perpetrators to face up to their criminal behaviour.”

The program is in addition to the $5.28 million commitment the NSW Government recently announced for voluntary non-government Men’s Behaviour Change Programs.

The $60 million package also includes new Police Domestic Violence High-Risk Offender Teams. These police teams made up of a sergeant, six

senior constables and an analyst who will target re-occurring offenders and investigate DFV matters.

The teams will be trialled in 2016, and if successful will be rolled out in all six police regions over the next three years. It has not been officially announced where the initial trials will be conducted.

“Domestic Violence High Risk Offender Teams will be able to utilise specialist expertise to target recidivist offenders and offer the best possible support to victims,” Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Troy Grant said.

Crisis accommodation services that help victims escape domestic and family violence will be given a boost of $20 million.

Minister for Family and Community Services Brad Hazzard said the additional funding would mean more women will get assistance around the clock.

The additional $20 million is designed to meet unmet local needs through providing expert and responsive 24/7 on-call services, increasing beds through refuges renting nearby properties, providing more crisis/emergency accommodation and temporary accommodation.

Albury will not be receiving a Staying Home Leaving Violence site in this week’s announcement, despite 27 sites now open across the state including the newly-announced sites in Orange, Clarence Valley, Inverell and Coffs Harbour.

Mayor set to step down

By ERIN SOMERVILLE WODONGA will soon be in for a new mayor with Rodney Wangman confirming on Monday 19 October that he won’t be seeking re-election.

Councillor Wangman has been Wodonga mayor since 2013 and also took the reins in 2006 to 2008.

He is also chief executive of Wodonga Senior Secondary College and said now was the perfect time to step aside as mayor.

“The last couple of weeks have given me time to consider this,” he said.

“I have been looking at how wonderful coun-

“Wodonga has come a long way in the last 10 years and people are noticing that the city is changing, and the next mayor will need to consider the next steps.”

Summit to set Indi electorate agenda

By ERIN SOMERVILLE THE Indi Summit that is due to shape the electorate’s agenda is set to kick off on Saturday.

The summit, which is being touted as the most important event of MP Cathy McGowan’s term in office, will be held in Benalla and focus on environment, job creation and the cultural economy.

It will also use feedback from more than 1600 people provided through the Kitchen Table Conversation project that ran earlier in the year, and from Get in Cathy’s Ear postcards. The summit aims to bring together the feedback to form a strategic plan for Indi.

Guest speaker Sam Millar has called for communities to get behind the summit and put their issues forward.

“The Indi Summit presents an important opportunity to come together and generate ideas for the future of our communities,” Mr Millar said.

“I encourage all people from Indi, young and old, to come along

The four new sites were chosen based on police data on domestic violence-related assaults and Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders (ADVOs), as well as the presence of local support programs, including other domestic violence services.

In addition, the package will introduce Australia’s first Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, which discloses information about a perpetrator’s violent history and provide a stronger response to sexual assault.

The register allows a person who has concerns about a partner to find out if they have a violent history.

Applicants will be supported by non-government organisations that specialise in early intervention and crisis response.

POLICE are searching for man after a child was reportedly approached on Thursday afternoon.

Police said that about 3.45pm on 22 October, an eight-year-old boy was waiting at a bus stop at the corner of Prune and Comans streets, Lavington, when an unknown man pulled up alongside him.

The man attempted to speak to the boy, but when the boy refused to speak to him, the driver left. Police were notified of the incident and have commenced inquiries.

They would like to speak to a man described as being of Caucasian appearance, with a medium build and a large tattoo on his arm. The man is further described as having blonde hair and wearing sunglasses. He may be aged between 30 and 35.

Meanwhile, the incident has again prompted police to encourage parents to discuss the ‘Safe People, Safe Places’ messages with their children, including: Make sure your parents or another adult you know knows where you are at all times.

Always walk straight home or to the place you are walking to. Walk near busier roads and streets, or use paths where there are lots of other people.

Know where safe places are - a shop, service station, police station, library or school. If you are ever frightened, you should go to one of these places and ask them to call the police.

Learn about safe adults you can look for and talk to if you need help - police officers, teachers at school, adults you know and trust.

Book to serve up a meal

By ERIN SOMERVILLE DRIVING across Australia and the USA to capture the countries’ forgotten Pizza Hut restaurants may sound like an odd adventure, but for former Albury resident Chloe Cahill it is a real work in progress.

Long after Pizza Hut restaurants served their last slice, their buildings’ trade mark angular roof and trapezoidal windows have captured the minds of Ms Cahill and photographer friend Ho Hai Tran.

“We’d regularly drive past an old Pizza Hut in Liverpool, and it would regularly start a discussion.

“We’d instantly talk about our own memories, both growing up in small towns Pizza Hut was a special place and a real treat.”

Fuelled by nostalgia, Ms Cahill and Tran shot their first Pizza Hut in 2013, and have captured almost 100 since.

Their journey even took them to the USA, where they hunted down old Pizza Hut buildings from Florida and Illinois to Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Ms Cahill admits it took a lot of work to track so many down in a foreign land.

“We did a lot of research, about 60 per cent of our work involves doing research.”

The journey led the two to learn not all Pizza Huts are the same, with each location having its own impact on a Pizza Hut building design.

Ms Cahill said her favourite is still Australia’s original Pizza Hut restaurant established in 1979, which now serves as a Korean restaurant.

Ms Cahill said the project was running against time as they raced to capture the remaining original Pizza Hut buildings before they were demolished.

With their eyes now set on capturing Pizza Huts in South America, the team are in the meantime keen to serve up their book full of photographs of Pizza Hut buildings, which is being delivered in February.

By ERIN SOMERVILLE FOR a family fleeing domestic violence or battling financial crisis, something as simple as a nappy can go a long way.

This year’s The Nappy Collective has kicked off, with families encouraged to donate spare nappies to help those in need.

Last year, over 4000 nappies which were mostly destined for landfill were collected on the Border North East region, sorted, and donated to agencies that support mothers in shelters fleeing from domestic violence.

Organisers are hoping for similar success this year to sustain a six-month supply of nappies as the demand continues to grow.

Despite the The Nappy Collective only starting in 2013, it has already proven successful on the Border and this year will see a record 11 drop points for nappies across Albury, Wodonga, and Wangaratta open until 30 October.

“I LOVE the peace, the colours, nature and the sheer rawness of the landscape.”

That’s what keeps Albury aerial photographer David Taylor poised with camera in hand as he captures some of the world’s greatest landscapes from above.

Over a series of three days in June this year Mr Taylor took to the skies above Lake Hume to capture the waterway’s character and soul.

The result is an exhibition, titled ‘Shooting at Shadows on the Hume’, and at just 30 per cent capacity shows the raw beauty of the exposed lake bed.

The snakey river channels, skeletal fence lines, and the terracotta hues of the washed clay lake bed all feature in the telling exhibition.

Mr Taylor has won acclaim for his images of outback lakes including Torrens, Frome and Eyre, the Cooper Creek, Diamantina and Warburton rivers, and Toko Range.

His love of aerial photography began as a hobby during forays across Australia in his Cessna 210.

It culminated in a successful first exhibition, Timeless Land, in Wodonga in 2010, and fol-

“It’s about listening to the land and being aware of what you are feeling,” he said.

“Nature is so powerful and our supreme ruler - even though humans think they are the ruler, it will always have the last say.’’

These days he shoots his images from a four-seater Glasair Sportsman, a tail dragger ideally suited to bush flying, but his images are no less astounding.

The exhibition will open at GIGS Gallery, Wodonga, on 3 November and continue until 30 November.

By ERIN SOMERVILLE SINCE 1909, the Bonegilla Hall has been the heart of the village.

For more than a century it has hosted dances long before they could be Instagramed, gatherings for new Australians when Bonegilla was the doorway to Australia for many migrants, and meetings debating and shaping the area’s future.

Now a group of volunteers have gathered together to raise funds to keep the hall serving the local community.

Still home to old time dances, craft groups, and markets, the Bonegilla Hall is in need of a little tender, loving care.

A new roof is on the list of works needed to upgrade the community-owned building.

“I think the hall is really important because it is a meeting place for the whole community,” Bonegilla Hall management committee event co-ordinator Amanda Skrypczak said.

“It’s a place everyone can come.”

Bonegilla Hall Craft Group is just one local organisation that calls the hall home. They meet every Thursday from 10am until 2pm and take the opportunity to meet new faces, learn new craft skills, and improve their overall well-being.

By ERIN SOMERVILLE IT isn’t every day you get to spend time at the Prime Minister’s official residence, but Albury local Helen Foster has been invited to the famous home for her contribution to the McGrath Foundation.

Ms Foster was invited to attend the Foundation’s 10th birthday celebrations hosted by the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his wife Lucy Turnbull earlier this month.

Ms Foster has close ties with the McGrath Foundation’s mission by raising more than $67,000 with the Albury Tigers Football Club ‘Hey Ladies Lunch’.

The event also marked an opportunity for McGrath

helping raise funds for the hall through a Mad Hatter’s High Tea Party.

The event asks guests to come dressed in their wildest or finest hat and enjoy a fun time to raise funds for the hall.

“It’s a way to have fun in a social, relaxed atmosphere and enjoy country hospitality.”

Patchwork designs will also be on show from Nolene McGuren.

“To date they’ve helped to support over 36,000 families in Australia experiencing breast cancer by providing invaluable physical, psychological and emotional support from the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment.

Aspiring singers will have the opportunity to train with the Ariawinning acapella group The Idea of North when they return to Albury Wodonga this month.

The Rotary Club of Albury North, The Murray Conservatorium and The Scots School Albury together with sponsor partners have teamed up to bring this interna-

tionally famous group to conduct a workshop on Friday 23 October, from 4pm to 5.30pm.

The choir will perform with The Idea of North during the second half of their concert on Friday 23 October, from 7pm, at The Scots School Albury Auditorium.

Last year, over 1000 people enjoyed their classic performance at the Albury Botanic Gardens, and now locals have the chance to be part of the impressive performance.

As winners of the 2013 best jazz album, The Idea of North has worked with such music greats as Manhattan Transfer and James Morrison.

AS well as specialist training for local singers, the show will also raise much-needed funds for the Wewak Special School music program hosted by The Murray Conservatorium.

I, THANKFULLY, am not somebody that works on weekends however my appreciation for those that do is real and enduring.

I understand many people work weekends out of necessity (it is the only job available), others do for the extra money it brings into their households and others have no choice because that is what the job requires.

I fear the scourge of US style employers (exploiters) infiltrating the Australian workforce and industrial relations with their ridiculously low pay rates and no penalties and poor conditions.

Bosses will all say we don’t want to reduce your pay, we just want to be rid of penalty rates!

Well, removing penalty rates is reducing people’s pay rates and current conditions and it is likely to be the first change of many.

Why do businesses open on the weekend? To earn more money!

Art opens doors

By ERIN SOMERVILLE FOR more than three years Joanne Finn suffered from depression, not knowing what that dark feeling was.

“I had my mother driving me to the doctor’s because I was always crying.

The doctors treated me for depression and after a short time I was became my old self again.”

But despite Ms Finn finally seeking help, the black dog came back to stalk her.

She describes it as hitting rock bottom.

“I was not coping, all the anger had surfaced spiralling further into a dark place.

“I took tablets and was ready for my life to end.”

It was then that she was finally put in touch with Albury Wodonga Adult Mental Health Service and she found a place to heal at Jarrah Retreat.

Ms Finn said it was hard at the beginning to put her hand up and admit she had a mental health issue, but now would like to see more done to highlight the support available for those who are suffering.

“I found it very hard.

“I tried to get in the private hospital but it would have cost $4000 and my health fund didn’t cover it.”

Finally, Ms Finn found support at Jarrah Retreat where she learnt to overcome her dark fears and thoughts.

She has come to embrace yoga and meditation and spends more time caring for herself.

Ms Finn’s story is shared with others who have had similar experiences through artworks that now hang in the entrance of Albury Community Mental Health on Townsend Street.

The artworks are being shared as part of Mental Health Month NSW and in the lead up to Blue (Belonging Loyalty Understanding Empowerment) Day. The day is organised by the Consumer Participation Group for those in need of mental health support, and will feature an ex-

hibition showcasing the journeys taken by many who have battled mental health issues.

Blue Day will be held at The Place (the old Lavington Library) at 11am on 26 October.

Visitors should wear blue and can enjoy a barbecue lunch.

LACK of spring rainfall is bringing an early start to this year’s bushfire danger season.

The NSW Rural Fire Service Southern Border announced this week the Bush Fire Danger Period that traditionally begins on 1 November will be brought forward due to increasing warm weather and lack of rain.

An exact date has not yet been set, but the Danger Period could begin as

early as 23 October.

Those still needing to complete burning off are encouraged to start soon.

Anyone wishing to burn is reminded it is now too late to burn large timber or windrows, and burning is restricted to grass, stubble, and garden waste only.

Albury passes fitness test ALBURYCITY has welcomed a report by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) recommending that it is Fit For the Future and should not face merger.

IPART assessed submissions from every council in NSW on whether they were Fit for the Future, asking councils to demonstrate how they would become and remain sustainable, provide effective and efficient services, and develop the scale and capacity to meet the needs of the community.

IPART has made its recommendations to the Minister for Local Government.

Mayor Henk van de Ven welcomed the declaration that AlburyCity is Fit for the Future and said the council would review the recommendations and respond accordingly.

“We look forward to reviewing the IPART submission in detail and preparing a response to the NSW Government by 18 November.”

The mayor recently wrote

to NSW Local Government Minister Paul Toole seeking a further assurance that there will be no forced merger between AlburyCity and Greater Hume Shire.

In 2014, the Minister for Local Government announced the Fit for the Future reform package based on the recommendations of the Independent Review of Local Government.

Every council in NSW was required to submit a proposal by 30 June this year, outlining their plans to become Fit for the Future.

This will be done after detailed discussion with the council.

TOWNS and villages on the Border can expect to see better internet service sooner than expected.

The Federal Government released on Friday the National Broadband Network’s (NBN) rollout timetable for the next three years, which will include Alexandra, Rutherglen, Wahgunyah, Bright and Porepunkah, Benalla, Beechworth, Chiltern, Myrtleford, Corryong, Yea, Eildon, Kinglake, Mount Beauty, Tawonga South, Mansfield, Tallangatta gaining fibre-to-thenode access.

Fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) provides broadband around 8-10 times quicker than average ADSL speeds by running fibre to a neighbourhood node/pillar then using the existing copper network to connect to premises.

The new rollout plan, which extends out to September 2018, provides a breakdown of when the network will be starting in specific locations and the type of technology that will be used.

Over 19,000 premises at Bandiana, Barandudah, Barnawartha North, Leneva, West Wodonga, and Wodonga will begin being connected mid2016.

Army display at bike fest

By TANIA PHILLIPS THE Army will be special guests at this year’s Border Bike Fest motorbike show and shine and swap meet at Gateway Lakes on Sunday.

The festival, first held in 2008, is hosted by the Lions Club of Wodonga and the Ulysses Club and attracts large crowds and bikes with interest and entrants coming from as far away as the Central Coast this year.

Organiser Michael Georgiou said they hope to have 200-300 bikes on display for this year’s show and shine as well as plenty of interesting displays.

“It will be nice to have the Army onboard and the Wodonga Police,” he said.

He said the Army would have a major display including two unique vehicles; the Digger - the only six-wheeled Land Rover and the Cassowary.

Michael said the Cassowary isn’t just a flightless bird that lives in North Queensland, it is in fact the Army’s very own street machine.

He said the Army street machine is designed as a purpose built “burn out” vehicle to conduct demonstrations at high performance motor sport events around Australia.

The purpose of the demonstrations is to raise the profile of the Army and Army technical trades with a view to increased recruiting.

A street machine can be anything from a passenger car with alloy wheels to a highly modified motor vehicle of any type.

The Army street machine falls in the extreme modification category and was built from an in service Land Rover 6x6.

To keep the concept a little different to most vehicles, the Project team decided to prepare the street machine as a sixwheel drive with a view to doing sixwheel burn out demonstrations.

In keeping with the street machine concept, the cab was stripped, modified and repainted, and all components have been finished in show car specifications.

Mr Georgiou said as well as the Army, there would be a display from the Wodonga Police.

“The Wodonga Police Highway Patrol will be here with an officer and a vehicle,” he said.

“It will be a rare opportunity to talk to an officer about road safety.”

This year’s Border Bike Fest will have something for everyone including a

A Dino manufacturer from Melbourne is bringing a specialised motorcycle “Dino” machine that will simulate road terrain.

Add to that kids’ rides and activities, the very popular loudest bike competition - with two categories this year - one for Harleys and the other for “non-Harleys” and Mr Georgiou said there will be something for everyone.

Bike registration starts at 8am and the exhibition and swap meet will be held from 10am to 2pm with the presentation at 2pm. Entry is $5 and children under 12 (with an adult) are free.

WITH the great weather making great riding, chances are your motorbike is in need of a little more maintenance than usual.

Here are some top tips to keep your motorbike in great shape.

Sometimes it’s all too easy to give your bike a quick wash and forget you had your GPS or accessories still attached.

Don’t get caught out. Washing your bike by hand at home out of direct sunlight is best for the paintwork.

It’s also a good idea to make sure your bike is nice and cool before you get up close and start with the elbow grease. Washing on a lawn can help prevent water and chemicals seeping into the stormwater drains.

Using wax regularly will keep paintwork in its best condition. Wax protects and preserves the lacquer and stops water spreading into crevices, gaps and holes where metal parts are prone to oxidation.

Polish contains abrasive ingredients while wax doesn’t, so when you have a scratch or a worn hazy look, use polish to remove it.

You may be able to cover it with wax but this will be temporary. The sequence should be: wash, polish and then wax to seal it all in.

Tar can easily flick up from a recently laid surface and be very tricky to remove because it is oil-based. Try not to let tar sit on your bike for long remove it as soon as possible.

If you are not able to remove it using a common cleaning product, use chain cleaner. Apply to the soiled spot and leave for a few minutes. Rinse with

Furphy - Koslch is a German golden ale 4.4 per cent Made from Victorian secret and topaz hops. Easy drinking almost lager-style beer. Clean and crisp with an interesting history.

Kolsch’s originally came from Cologne in Germany and are a golden ale or lager that has not gone through the lagering process.

Yenda pale is a American Pale Ale 4.7 per cent Malty in character, slightly hoppy and almost has a wet bitterness to finish. Biscuity flavoured malt can be tasted too.

Carlton draught is American adjunct lager 4.6 per cent Original draught lager. Full bodied fizz is noted, slight malty character and fresh bitterness.

Carlton Dry 4.5 per cent Very similar in style to Carlton Draught yet more clear and crisp, filtered lager.

Light bodied and slight refreshing bitterness.

Red-Emption is essentially an American red ale / session red IPA / hoppy red ale 5 per cent Light yet full-bodied malt character with a nice bitter hoppy character. El Dorado, Nelson Sauvin, Topaz and Enigma hops used.

Kosciusko is an Amercian style pale ale. 4.5 per cent has a blend of pale and Munich malt, galaxy hops. Nice

150 Lashes - English style pale ale 4.7 per cent is a very good hot weather beer, fresh and light bubbles noticed, sweet malt and hints of corn to smell. Very approachable and easy to drink pale ale, well rounded, balanced between malty and bitter.

Beechworth Pale Ale is an American style pale 4.8 per cent It is nice and fresh bittered pale ale, more hoppy than malty although American pales are generally malt driven. Clean and thirst quenching. NZ and USA hop varieties are used.

Lazy Yak is an Australian style pale. 4.2 per cent A light golden and cloudy approachable pale ale, slightly sweet and bitter, leaves the mouth quite quickly. Easy to drink.

The hops of this beer have not been released.

XXXX Gold - mid strength Australian style pale lager. 3.5 per cent.

Golden cluster hops are used with malted barley which gives a balanced, smooth flavour and body, complemented by mild bitterness and lingering sweetness. A beer brewed for summer.

White Rabbit is a brown ale / dark ale 5.2 per cent A Dark fruit driven beer with malty / roasty characters. It’s slightly bitter and warming although a brown ale good for all weather.

Copper Ale Constable is an English bitter / ESB 3.4 per cent It has citrusy and earthy flavours. A very heavy bodied beer for the low alcohol content, generally the higher the alcohol, the richer and sweeter beer. Copper Ale is an approachable / bridging

Rutherglen Pale Ale 5 per cent is an Australian pale ale. Light bodied, not

Rutherglen Pilsner. 5.3 per cent is a Bohemian style German pilsner made with German malts and sazz hops true to the style. Nice and hoppy with a slight malt character, a touch of zest and zing from the Czech hops

5. Lower chance of developing gallstones Beer drinking is associated with a reduced risk for gallstones, according to the Mayo Clinic. Gallstones are made up of cholesterol, bile and other things that cause pain in the stomach. A cold beer is an easy way to help combat those painful stones!

WHEN dieting, it can be hard to avoid the calories that come from alcohol. With festive season approaching, here are some ways to keep your calorie content lower than usual.

Light beer is an obvious choice for dieters. Low in calories and contained in preportioned bottles, a light beer is a viable option for people attempting to cut calories without sacrificing the indulgence of a cold glass of beer.

However, drinking five or six light beers in a night quickly adds up to six-hundred calories, so for some drinkers ordering two non-light beers with a higher alcohol content may be a more attractive option.

Wine has a distinguished reputation among alcohols with only 100 calories per glass.

But beware that one glass does not mean you can fill the glass to the brim ... one glass of wine equals five ounces, so fill to about one third of your typical wine glass.

Portion control is key when drinking wine. Both red and white wines pack about twenty calories per ounce, but red wines are more effective in lowering cholesterol and hypertension.

Many people will opt for spirits when dieting. Unlike wine and beer, hard alcohol does not contain fat or sugar and, at about 100 calories per

shot, poses as an attractive option for dieters.

However, unless taken as shots, hard alcohol is often mixed with high-calorie, sugary beverages that will pack on the pounds.

When drinking hard alcohol, choose low-calorie mixers like diet sodas or sugar free juices to avoid these unnecessary calories.

Another trick to avoid the calories of a mixer is to load your drink with ice. Ice can work as a zero-calorie bulk to your drink and the added H20 can cut back on tomorrow’s hangover.

In the end, just remember to drink smart ... everything is OK in moderation.

It’s a love story with ghosts Crimson Peak (MA) Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam, Jim Beaver A DARK twisted fairytale, a classic Gothic romance, Crimson Peak is a movie out of time and yet timely; beautifully crafted and realised from sets, costumes and cinematography through to the acting and music, this is a modern classic.

There is less green-screen than you’d expect and more heart and soul.

Director Guillermo de Toro has been repeatedly on record saying this is not a horror movie - but a love story with ghosts and moviegoers should listen to the man in charge. Those expecting a “Halloween frightnight fest” with jump scares and classic horror will be disappointed - this is more about affairs of the heart than cheap thrills.

It is a tall dark mysterious stranger not from our slick computer generated world sent to woo you and by God it does just that.

Yes it does have its scary moments and a couple of

graphic scenes that may turn your stomach, but it's all part of the fun and the journey.

Think Wuthering Heights, think Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein but just think.

Set at the turn of the past century a young independent woman, a lot more innocent about the ways of the world than she believes, Edith Cushing (Wasikowska) has set her heart on writing but not sweeping love stories - she doesn’t want to be Jane Austen, she wants to be Mary Shelley.

Australian Wasikowska owns this movie - she has to this is her journey but we believe her and we follow her not down the rabbit hole (she is Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland) but across the sea. Wasikowska brings a believable innocence and yet strength to the part and it’s this strength and intelligence that in the end that is what gets her through, even though she is blinded by love and grief.

As with all classic Gothic romances she meets the tall, dark and handsome stranger Sir Thomas Sharpe (Hiddleston) with a crumbling mansion, big dreams and a foreboding sister

(Jessica Chastain) and eventually you know Edith is going to abandon her lovesick childhood friend Doctor McMichaels (Charlie Hunnam) and follow her heart.

Hiddleston’s charisma shines out in this even though if you examine it - he is almost the “damsel” in distress - the pretty and yet in some ways helpless victim - or is he?

There was a danger the men in this film could be consigned to “window dressing” but they never totally are, especially Hiddleston who more than holds his own in the tug-of-war between his wife and sister.

But does the real power in this family belong to his sister Lucille - played by “the next Meryl Streep”, the darling of US cinema Jessica Chastain?

Mmm, that’s the question.

Chastain plays a strong and menacing baddie - her long looks to camera bring just enough hidden menace.

Del Toro tells a story of love and sex and death and destruction as elegant as the velvet his characters wear and as beautifully twisted as the carvings on the walls of Alladale Hall.

A matter of music style MUSIC appreciation is measured differently by everybody; even within a typical home the various members posses different styles, listening skills and interpretation of music.

Tru Hifi has found the better the equipment, the better the understanding. The casual listener can be quite happy with that $400 shelf stereo pumping away iTunes. I have clients that have invested significant amounts looking for the elusive sound that makes your hair stand up each and every time a new recording is played.

We have over 300 quality audio brands available in Australia, Tru Hifi currently provides around 180 brands amounting to a significant choice and the better you go the more choice occurs. The information in the market at times is conflicting.

The majority of the highest performing brands are often some of the worst marketed products, while a number of highly marketed products leave you with an OK result but with an expected better outcome.

I will use two examples of two different journeys both resulting in different outcomes.

The first client spent a lot of time doing his research, visited both Melbourne and Sydney stores without success. He was looking for a sound that tickled his soul and budget was not an issue, as it turned out that sound he was looking for was not the most clinically perfect product in the market. The result is a choice of a number of similar products, some times from the same manufacturing source creating the allusion of choice. We end up with a sound designed not to offend anybody. A little like a $10 bottle of red wine. To his surprise, he purchased a brand he had never heard of, was easier to navigate and invested a similar amount of money benefitting from a significant improvement to his listening enjoyment.

No two people are the same, and with any selection compromises are made. Spend time to understand and listen to the difference, the investment level may be the same, the level of enjoyment can be very significant. The challenge I make to our clients is the appreciation of music becomes more significant once you move away from highly compressed music and realise that what you hear live can be reproduced in the home.

Lee re-lives Anzac spirit

By TANIA PHILLIPS LEE Kernaghan is coming home.

While Lee now makes his home in Queensland, the young kid from Albury turned country icon, still considers here his hometown - the scene of so many firsts and the back-drop for some of his most iconic songs including Boys From The Bush.

So it’s little wonder that he loves coming “home” and this time he’s bringing something special.

Lee is set to play the Albury Entertainment Centre on 4 November with a show that is taking him all over Australia.

But while Albury fans may have seen him before (including some of those early gigs) Lee says this is a very special concert - a concert in two parts.

Part One will feature the stories behind some of his most loved songs, during which Lee will perform acoustically and unplugged with his band for the very first time in concert.

The audience will be treated to an intimate insight into the background and inspiration behind a selection of the most important songs of his career.

In Part Two, Lee will perform for the first time the songs from his chart-topping album Spirit Of The Anzacs.

Audiences will experience the power and emotion of the songs that captured the hearts and minds of the nation this year, with theatrical

lighting and a large video screen set to bring each story to life. Spirit of the Anzacs is the remarkable album from Lee Kernaghan and Special Guests.

“I’m really looking forward to coming back to my hometown back,” he said.

“Coming back to Albury is always special.”

“Boys from the Bush, The Outback Club and Three Chain Road all came from my experiences in the Riverina.”

Lee’s story telling was developed here - through his family on both his mother and father’s sides - through stories of his grandfather working as a drover out Hay and Deniliquin - going out to meet up with him on the road. Memories of being dragged through the front school of the Hume Public School as a fouryear-old to playing God Save The Queen at school, forming his first band and making his radio debut at 2AY in 1969.

He chuckles when he recounts his times growing up in Albury they are obviously memories he cherishes and memories that play out in his songs.

Although this tour is not all about Lee. This time he will bring the songs and stories to celebrate the centenary of the Gallipoli landing.

He and long-time collaborator Garth Porter were granted unique access to the Australian War Memorial archive - a chance to bring the stories and loves of our Anzacs to a wider audience.

Lee Kernaghan is in the middle of his current tour and looking forward to coming home to Albury.

“It was an absolute privilege to adapt these to music,” he said reverentially.

“This is some of the most powerful material that I’ve ever had the privilege to record in my career”, says Lee. “The album takes you on a real journey, from the trenches of the Western Front to the bombing of

Darwin, Kokoda, Long Tan, and the dust of Uruzgan Province in Afghanistan. It is a project that goes to the heart of who we are as a nation.”

Mateship comes through on stage CARPE Diem is a contemporary portrayal of every day Australian males dealing with issues of health, grief, loss and depression starring well-known Australian actor John Wood and it’s coming to the Theatrette, Albury Entertainment Centre.

The performance, also starring John Walker, stresses the importance of professional care in times of crises, and highlights the importance of mateship and looking out for each other.

With the high incidence of depression and suicide among Australian males, a project of this nature is germane; encouraging open and honest conversation and increased awareness.

Starring acclaimed actor John Wood, Carpe Diem is a didactic comedy performed in two acts.

The play is designed to be performed in work places to deliver the mental health messages in a way that is entertaining, immediate and highly relevant.

The event is being hosted by the Murray-Riverina NSW Business Chamber in partnership with AlburyCity and Hume Bank.

The chamber said workplace mental health was one of the most important issues facing organisations in today’s working world.

According to the chamber, over the past 12 months alone it has cost the Australian economy approximately $10.9 billion in lost productivity, and it is likely that one in three workers are affected by poor mental health.

Make a list, and then check it twice IF YOU'RE serious about finding a new home and thinking about attending an open for inspection this weekend, then it’s important to go prepared.

There are some “Dos and Don’ts” when you’re inspecting a home that is not your own but most are common sense. At the same time, it’s important to use this opportunity to full advantage and get the most out of your first visit to a potential new home.

As a start, you should prepare a checklist of your requirements for a new home: is it in a good location; is it the right size for your needs; does it require work or can you move straight in? And take your time.

A HOME in Bethanga has been listed as a nominee for the 2015 People’s Choice Award at the National Architect Awards.

The home by architects tUG Workshop is perched near the shores of Lake Hume and uses energy-efficient and spacious design.

The 386 square metre home, built in 2012, is the owner’s primary dwelling and boasts an attic bedroom, a basement wine cellar, and an unorthodox layout. Eating, cooking and drinking occur in a single triangular space.

The building was designed to be energy efficient by avoiding conventional Australian construction techniques. To prevent massive thermal bridges, the design includes aggregate masonry as a platform dressed with an isothermic shell with infiltration sealing to work towards the energyrelated Passivehaus Standards.

In the centre of the home is a courtyard known as a Kopor, which means bellybutton in the Torres Strait language of Meriam Mir. The Kopor has been designed by the Indigenous artist Kevin O’Brien, with the house turning around the Kopor in acceptance that dwelling in Australia occurs in de-ritualised Country.

The design has won praise from industry critics. “Reworking the courtyard typology for the local climatic condition, in its generation and operation, the house is a rigorous example of research and development performed through practice,” the jury citation at the 2015 Victorian Architecture Awards read.

“A direct beauty, nothing is unintentional.

“The house readily accommodates daily life and rewards the inhabitant with moments of spatial intensity and calm, repose and movement, prospect and retreat.’

The house is one of 11 in the running for the award and up against homes from Sydney Harbour, Woollahra, Mt Whitfield, and St Andrew’s Beach.

Local Sport Sharing the honours out HONOURS have been shared on day one of the Cricket Albury Wodonga provincial first grade match between East Albury and Albury at Billson Oval.

Winning the toss Albury batted first making 110 off 66 overs with number seven batsman Andrew Wilkes top scoring with 32 after the top order was sent back to the pavilion cheaply and Easts were struggling at 6-43.

Albury’s bowlers shared the spoils with three Dave Tassell 3-18, Brad Smith 3-27 and Kallen Griffiths 3-25 taking the majority of the wickets.

In reply at stumps Albury was already two down and finished the day 2-31 off nine overs with Brad Horn not out on 12 while Liam Hocking will resume on four not out.

Meanwhile at Lavington Sports Ground the home team won the toss and sent Wodonga in - a move that seems to have paid off with Wodonga declaring its first innings closed at

8-108 off 66 overs.

Bryce Garvey top scored with 32 while William Heriot took 3-10 for Lavington. In reply Lavington where 1-17 off 20 overs in its first innings.

Ashley Hulme’s second century in as many games has put North Albury in a strong position against St Patrick’s after day one of its match at Bunton Park.

North Albury finished the day at 9-281 off 80 overs with Hulme hitting up 106 and sharing a 101-run partnership with David Farrell (55).

It was Hulme’s second century, scoring 115 against Wodonga in round one.

Thunder is lightning HOLBROOK Public School has a new student - well in a manner of speaking.

Students from Holbrook Public School have the chance to quiz Sydney Thunder’s Usman Khawaja after ‘adopting’ him as part of the Thunder Local Hero program.

The Big Bash League Club’s school initiative will see Usman Khawaja as well as team mates Pat Cummins, Michael Hussey and Shane Watson swap cricket batts for textbooks as they go back to school across term four and into the summer holidays.

Now in its third year, the Thunder Local Hero Program is open to primary schools across NSW and ACT, and last year saw nearly 200 schools take part in the free program.

“I’m really excited to be involved

in Thunder Local Hero again this year,” Western Sydney junior Usman Khawaja said.

“Last year was great to get out there and get to know more of our youngest fans in Albury.”

Pupils will work through a curriculum based activity book, receive regular email and video updates directly from their adopted player and could even win the chance to have them visit the school for a special cricket clinic.

“We pride ourselves as being a family club and we hope the Thunder Local Hero program will give children a personal connection to Sydney Thunder and our star players,” Sydney Thunder general manager Nick Cummins said.
