said the new plan was part of the Federal Government’s pledge to roll out the entire network in Australia by 2020.

“I am proud to be a part of the team that is putting La Trobe on the mark for the NBN rollout,” Mr Wood said.

“Adding this to our list of deliveries for La Trobe is a great day for our community.”

Mr Wood said the release of the plan was a huge step forward for the NBN as the company worked to speed up the rollout and make the build as cost-effective as possible.

The new schedule is a coup for Mr Wood and Yarra Ranges Councillor Mike Clarke, who told the Mail in early September they had hoped to arrange a visit to the Hills from then communications minister, and now Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, to discuss the rollout of the plan.

Previously, areas around the Dandenong Ranges did not show any works underway and were not included in an 18-month rollout plan.

At the time, both Mr Wood and Cr Clarke expressed concerns over the region’s absence in the plan.

“I believe Malcolm’s visit to the Hills, where he has an opportunity to hear from residents first-hand, will make a difference,” Mr Wood said at the time.

“People in the Hills area should not have to wait 10 years or more for fast broadband.”

When completed, the NBN will not only replacing ageing communications technology, but facilitate superfast broadband service which will deliver speeds of up to 100 megabits per second.

This is almost four times faster than ADSL2+.

WITHIN the next three years, the Dandenong Ranges will be in line with the rest of the nation after NBN Co. finally announced dates for its planned roll-out for the region.

Though, those champing at the bit for superfast broadband may need to cool their heels slightly, with the Belgrave area in particular needing to wait until the middle of 2018.

A new list of locations scheduled to receive NBN over the next three years was announced on Friday 16 October, with the Federal Government proposing a mix of technologies, including Fibre to the Node (FTTN) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) networks.

First in line for the Hills area will be Ferntree Gully, Lysterfield and Upper Ferntree Gully, with an estimated 4220 premises set to receive NBN access from July to December next year.

Next will be Avonsleigh, Clematis, Cockatoo, Emerald, Gembrook and Kallista, with an estimated 4360 premises in these areas set for access throughout January to March in 2017.

However, in what will be a more than two-year wait, an estimated 7100 premises will gain access in the townships of Belgrave, Ferny Creek, Tecoma and Upway, which is scheduled for roll-out between January to June in 2018.

In more positive news, though, despite the geographical barriers in the Hills, all townships in the region will gain access to the more reliable FTTN, rather than the hybrid technology which relies on coaxial cable.

Walk for cancer remembers Dad

Doggies made residents day

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS DISABILITY worker Kerrin Bass will be walking 50km this weekend to raise money for the Cancer Council in memory of her late father.

Her father was diagnosed with lung cancer in July 2014 and passed away on 24 October 2014, and Ms Bass is walking to raise money on the first anniversary of his passing.

Ms Bass has worked for Yooralla Day Service in Ferntree Gully for nine years, caring for up to 20 adults, mostly with cerebral palsy.

WILLOWBROOKE Aged Care Home residents in Upper Ferntree Gully were recently treated to a show by OzDogs handlers and their four-legged friends.

The dogs performed tricks for the residents and had cuddles afterwards to the delight of both residents and staff of the aged care home.

Residents said they were reminded of the pets they used to have and the whole experience brightened their day.

Willowbrooke resident Alice Wallace said she had a great time playing with the dogs and looked forward to visits from OzDogs each year.

“I love dogs full stop,” she said.

“These ones are such beautiful wonderful dogs that make me miss my own dog, but their visit is a lovely thing.”

Willowbrooke Lifestyle coordinator Chereyne Colby said residents enjoyed the show performed by Ozdogs volunteers and their dogs so much last year that she did not hesitate to call on them again.

“They are just a group of friends getting in there and taking their dogs to these places, not for any monetary gain, but just the enjoyment and pleasure of others,” Chereyne said.

“It is just fantastic.”

Warning after crash

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS POLICE are asking people to make sure intersections are clear before turning, after two cars collided with a truck on the corner of Francis Crescent and Swansea Road in Lilydale on Monday 12 October.

Police said the Volkswagen Golf and Holden Commodore crashed into each other and then into the truck during the school rush just before 9am.

Each car had three occupants and the truck had one occupant, with the Volkswagen containing a six-year-old and a 10-year-old passenger, and the Commodore containing a 13-year-old and a 16 year old passenger.

While there were no serious injuries caused on the scene, all occupants of the cars were taken to hospital for further checks.

Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Senior Constable Aidan Williams said drivers needed to take care when crossing intersections across oncoming traffic.

“The message is just don’t cross the intersection until you know it’s clear,” he said.

“It’s very lucky no-one was seriously hurt here today and things could have easily been a lot worse.”

A POLICE officer was injured during a robbery on Station Street in Ferntree Gully on Thursday afternoon 15 October.

Police said that two male offenders armed with an iron bar and hatchet tied up a woman while attempting to rob a cigarette store near the train station in central Ferntree Gully.

After police were called out, about 2.45pm, an altercation occurred between the men and police and one of the police officers was struck in the head with a hatchet.

A 24-year-old Bangholme man was arrested at the scene with three other men also being arrested just before 5pm after a brief manhunt.

The injured police officer received non-life threatening trauma and was taken to the Maroondah Hospital for treatment.

Theft charge A BELGRAVE man will face court next year after being caught red-handed with stolen property in his car over the weekend.

Belgrave police Sergeant Paul Phillips said that a 25-year-old man was arrested in Upwey at about 5pm on Sunday 18 October.

Sgt Phillips said the man was found in a vehicle with “numerous” stolen items, which had been taken from other cars in the last fortnight.

He said the man was charged with handling stolen goods and minor offences, and was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court next March.

Hatchet Freed cannabis man on a high job on police

A MENZIES Creek man sentenced over the cultivation of a commercial quantity of cannabis has been freed from jail.

In November last year, Jason Uri Ivanoff was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for cultivating a commercial quantity of cannabis in early 2013.

A search warrant issued for the man’s Trumpington Grove home in Menzies Creek uncovered several hydroponic set ups, amounting to 94 plants weighing in at 36 kilograms - qualifying as a commercial haul.

At the time, Ivanhoff’s defence team argued that despite the significant quantity, the cannabis was for personal use.

The prosecution conceded that there was no suggestion that Ivanoff had grown the drug to sell it, admitting paraphernalia general connected with trafficking such as weighing scales, lists of customers or large sums of cash were not located at the property.

The judge ruled the cannabis was cultivated for personal, not commercial use, handing down an 18 months’ jail term along with a two-year community correction order and 300 hours of unpaid, community service requirement.

After more than a year behind bars, Ivanhoff was granted an appeal on the grounds that the sentence was too excessive, particularly given the cannabis supply was intended for personal use.

The Court of Appeal heard Ivanhoff is affected by major depression over personal circumstances which had worsened during his time in custody.

Ivanhoff had struggled to interact with other prisoners, being subject to a physical attack resulting in a fractured collarbone.

Ivanhoff was granted an appeal on Thursday 17 October, ending his jail term after 419 days behind bars.

Despite a string of previous drugrelated charges, the judge found Ivanhoff “demonstrated that he is capable of living a productive, and enterprising, law abiding life”.

He was also ordered to undergo a oneyear community correction order as well as undergo various health treatments.

Council takes look at park plan

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS YARRA Ranges Council has voted in favour of commissioning a report by an independent external consultant on the ‘Great Forest National Park’ proposal.

The report will balance the benefits and drawbacks of establishing the new national park and recommend whether or not council should support the proposal.

A spokesperson the Great Forest National Park has congratulated council on its decision and said the review would give them a vision for the future.

“The shire should be congratulated on its foresight in exploring these opportuni-

ties for residents and businesses in the region.”

Not everyone was supportive of the council commissioning a review into the park, with a representative of the Prospectors and Miners Association of Victoria speaking at the meeting.

“The Great Forest National Park is going to close land for bush user groups that spend millions of dollars in the region,” he said.

The proposal was also called a “green ideology” by the speaker who cited job losses in the timber industry as a reason not to support the park.

State MP Christine Fyffe also expressed her disagreement with the council’s decision.

“This is a decision that will waste ratepayers’ money investigating a proposal on land they do not own, land that they have no control or responsibility over and on a proposal that they will not be able to make a decision on.”

Cr McAllister said in relation to her amendment to the motion, it was important that they were well informed on issues affecting their region.

The independent consultant will have six months to prepare the report before it will be presented to council.

EMERALD police are searching for victims of recent robberies, after a man was arrested by officers last week.

Emerald police Leading Senior Constable Brett Hore said an Upper Beaconsfield man in his thirties was arrested on Emerald-Beaconsfield Road, on Wednesday 14 October.

Leading Sen Const Hore said the man was arrested in regards to traffic offences and stolen goods, and that police recovered two large earthmoving equipment radiators.

Anyone who may have had a similar radiator stolen is asked to call Emerald police on 5954 0200.

Over the limit POLICE are appealing for public help to catch a hoon who was spotted travelling at more than twice the speed limit in Emerald on Saturday.

Emerald police Leading Senior Constable Brett Hore said that police attempted to pull over the driver of a blue Holden Commodore, after clocking the car at 116km/h in a 50km/h zone, at 9pm on Saturday 17 October.

Leading Sen Const Hore said the driver then evaded police, driving away on Emerald-Monbulk Road towards Ferntree Gully.

He said the car had a personalised registration plate of ITSLEZ, and that anyone who has information should contact Emerald police on 5954 0200 or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or to submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com. au

Pool swims in

By PETER DOUGLAS AS THE region starts to heat up, Dandenongs residents can take solace in the likelihood of the Olinda Pool re-opening on the promised date.

Both Yarra Ranges councillor Jason Callanan and James Edge from the Olinda Community Pool Association are pleased with progress as the 5 December deadline nears, with the proposed date previously being described as tight.

Preparations for the works officially began in late July after confirmation of $500,000 in State Government funds, matching the contribution from Yarra Ranges Shire.

Works will include installation of a liner to the swimming pool, renewal of filtration equipment, refurbishment of existing toilet and bathroom facilities, and construction of a new accessible toilet for people with disabilities.

Mr Edge said the commu-

nity should be feeling excited as hopes are high the pool will return to its former glory.

“All works are progressing on schedule, weather like we’ve been having is great because we can get plenty done,” he said.

“Preparation for the liner is underway, while the disabled toilets are almost finished.

“The next part is the hydraulic system, but they will work in tandem with the liner people.”

Yarra Ranges Council closed the pool two summers ago due to cracks.

The council resolved last year to repair the pool back to its original state, and a project control group was established to monitor the project.

The group comprises ward councillor Jason Callanan and community representatives Mr Edge, Janine McClelland and Sue Smith.

Cr Callanan praised the coordination of the works.

“Everything is on track as

expected - we’ve factored in room for hold-ups, but they haven’t taken place yet,” he said.

“It’s in budget and we’re pleased with how it’s proceeding.”

Cr Callanan believed there would be a ceremony planned before the official opening, possibly in late November or early December.

Meanwhile, the Olinda Community Pool Association will be holding a stall to raise funds for the pool at the car boot sale on Saturday, 31 October, near the Olinda Community Hall.

Mr Edge encouraged the community to attend.

“Council has offered to reinstate the pool to its former state, but it’s up to us to continue to improve the pool,” he said.

“We will eventually be looking at things like seating, barbecue and a solar blanket.”

Just download Inspiro’s first venture into social media, the Buy Local Eat Seasonal in the Yarra Ranges app.

The not-for-profit community health organisation on Thursday, 15 October, launched the digital version of its highly popular seasonal brochure, which was first introduced in 2013.

The app allows users to have all the information they need, including a map and a seasonal list of the freshest produce available and where to buy it from, all within the

Yarra Ranges.

To mark the occasion, local fruit growers, members of Inspiro and Yarra Ranges Shire met at Raynes Orchard in Woori Yallock.

Inspiro board member, Linda Hancock, told the gathering the seasonal aspect to the app was what she was most excited about.

“As a local, I know where to find a few things, but the app lets me know what’s in season and where I can make the most of it,” she said.

“We’re a nation that’s getting larger, so we should all eat more fruit and vegetables.”

Grower, Len Raynes, said their orchard had about 450 varieties of fruit, so it was good

to know when to grab them in season.

“Most of our customers come from overseas, so we want to see more locals come on board,” he said.

The show will feature classes for children aged 5-7 and 8-10 years (with parental supervision required); and classes for 11-13 and 14-16 years, with the first three place-getters awarded rosettes.

There also will be novelty classes for the dog with the Waggiest Tail, Prettiest Bitch, Handsomest Dog and one for the Golden Oldies, dogs aged eight years and over.

The highlight of the day will be the awarding of Best in Show, just before 2pm.

Monbulk Veterinary Clinic will provide judges and sponsorship on the day and everyone who enters a class gets a raffle ticket in a prize hamper.

Mrs Conway-Lee said she was looking forward to seeing families and their dogs and hoped the show attracted plenty of spectators, too.

“As well as the dog classes, we’ll have face painting, a colouring competition, barbecue and lolly stall, so we’re hoping lots of people come along just for the fun of it,” she said.

I REFER to the letter ‘Meters swipe not smart’ (The Mail, Tuesday, 13 October) from current Labor staffer and former ALP candidate for Evelyn, Peter Harris.

Mr Harris asks: “Am I not mistaken but was not the local member in government for four years and in this time did she actually do anything on smart meters.”

You are very much mistaken, Mr Harris.

I raised the serious issues around smart meters on no fewer than 20 separate occasions since the former Labor Government bungled the introduction of the trouble-plagued meters.

I raised the issues not only in parliament, but in letters to ministers, through the media and also in one-on-one conversations, with the energy ministers.

While I understand why Mr Harris, in his current role, has to be political, it is no excuse for him colouring the truth.

Road issue unresolved THIS matter was most recently raised in the Mail on 11 November last year and is still no closer to being resolved, despite numerous approaches to Yarra Ranges Shire.

The crux of the matter is a street 3.2m from gutter to gutter is not a suitable avenue for through two-way traffic and that is the situation with the northern end of Nobelius Street, from Stewart Road, Emerald.

Presently, the road is closed each day to through traffic for nine hours each morning and afternoon, while drilling to enable the undergrounding of overhead wires goes ahead and non-residents of Nobelius Street have been using alternative routes with no apparent inconvenience.

Surely this is an opportunity for the shire to establish a permanent trial closure for 24 hours every day to enable them to monitor traffic flows on alternative routes and to consider the benefits of such an action.

However, despite making such a suggestion to the shire, I have received no response.

If the reason the shire will not close off this

portion of Nobelius Street is because of a perceived dangerous blind spot on the corner of Stewart Road and the Emerald- Monbulk Road, surely this should be rectified whether the street is closed or not.

The potential dangers of leaving the status quo on both roads has been brought to the shire’s attention, even back to the time of the Shire of Sherbrooke, and any resultant serious accident would surely bring the shire’s potential liability into question.

However, we, the residents of this section, are ever hopeful that commonsense will eventually prevail not too far into the future and before such an incident occurs.

Licence mystery a frustration IN WHAT now sadly seems a bygone era, when a great benefactor made a bequest to his fellow citizens, then we could expect his wishes to be honoured.

Such was the case with the gifting of the Alfred Nicholas Gardens in perpetuity to the people of Victoria.

Nowadays, the big end of town calls the shots (‘Garden Deal Anger’, Mail, 13, October).

The stroll down the classic leafy driveway of the gardens is to be shoved aside by the wishes of the Burnham Beeches developers to give their clients a special experience when they drive into the ever-expanding complex.

Up to 1700 clients at once, if the lobbying of the developers is successful.

And what have the developers paid for their licence to displace ordinary garden users in favour of their clients’ vehicles?

Alas, we shall never know what crumbs have fallen from their six-star table, for the terms of the licence are strictly ‘commercial in confidence’.

Poor fella, my country.

Council to pull out of day care

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS YARRA Ranges Council unanimously voted to end its Family Day Care scheme last week, in favour of privately run programs.

The cost to ratepayers for the service, whose popularity has steadily declined in recent years, was cited as one of the main reasons for ending the scheme.

The council’s vote to discontinue the program only 15 months after voting to save it at a council meeting in June 2014.

Educators and families that currently utilise the program will be fully supported to transfer into privatelyrun schemes, which will ultimately be cheaper for ratepayers and families.

The council supplied the family

day care scheme at a cost to council of $403,425 and loss of $266,930 of ratepayer funds in the 2014/15 financial year.

There are currently 197 families with 241 children using the scheme, 77 per cent of whom are Yarra Ranges residents. About 2.5 per cent of 1-4 years olds and their families who live in the Yarra Ranges who will be affected by this change.

At the council meeting on Tuesday 13 October, there were no speakers against the motion to end the scheme and one speaker in favour of it.

Kathi Hewitson of Foundations Family Day Care was the sole speaker in support of the motion and assured councillors the private child care sec-

tor in the Yarra Ranges was a better option.

Ms Hewitson said her day care service was cheaper and better equipped than council’s currently but was operated under the same regulations and standards.

“Currently council charges $2.40 per child per hour plus an admin levy whereas we charge $1.70 and all operate under same standards, Act, regulations and safety standards,” she said.

“The council also charges educators $2000 to be part of the service, plus additional costs to be part of the scheme where we don’t charge educators anything.”

“In effect, the council is charging a lot of money for a service that is not giving value for money.”

Presently there are 46 registered Family Day Care Schemes for the Yarra Ranges and Ms Hewitson said her service alone could accommodate the families and educators that may be put out by the change.

“My service has 84 families with 16 educators where council has 197 families with 24 educators,” she said.

“My service approval is for 60 educators so we can easily accommodate current educators and families.”

Yarra Ranges Shire social and economic development director Allie Wastie said the council would provide all support needed for educators to make the transition to other providers.

“It’s quite in depth what council officers have put in place to ensure a

smooth transition for educators,” she said.

Ms Wastie noted there had already been a briefing with educators to let them know what was contained in the report and there would be further forums for educators to identify any questions and finalise which alternate providers were available.

“Council officers will assist educators with funding the update of police checks, first-aid training, etc, to ease the transition to other providers,” Ms Wastie said.

The transition of educators and families to alternate providers will commence in the coming weeks with the operation of council-run Family Day Care ending on 31 January next year.

Help community radio rock the airwaves

By PETER DOUGLAS EMERALD-BASED station Mountain District Radio is hosting its annual radiothon from today until 1 November.

In the 30th anniversary of the radio station, the theme for this year is ‘Born of Fire’ and it is hoped the public will assist 3MDR to continue broadcasting and developing.

The need for a radio station was instigated because of the Ash Wednesday Bushfires in 1983, because it was felt there needed to be a better way of informing the local community.

During this week, the station is seeking new members and asking present ones to resubscribe.

Station manager, Phil Ruck, encouraged the community to show their support.

“Presenters are all volunteers and many are not only involved in presenting, but also behind the scenes work, too,” he said.

“How many people do you know of who shut themselves away in an office-like environment and talk to unseen people for about two hours, with musical intermissions and interviews.

“Sounds easy, but it is not always so.”

Mr Ruck said everyone who either joined or renewed a membership would go into the draw to win some outstanding prizes.

Students want their MeTV: episode 1000

By PETER DOUGLAS YARRA Ranges Special Development School last week celebrated its 1000th episode of its award-winning student-made TV show, MeTV. After kicking off in 2011, MeTV enables students to produce and star in videos on subjects ranging from cooking to sign language, which are then broadcast in classrooms across Victoria and NSW. Shane Spence, from the Mount Evelyn-based school, is the creator and driver of the project which has seen fantastic results.

Principal Helen Johnston praised the benefits of the program, which, she said, gave the

children self-confidence as well as an enhanced learning experience.

“The students love working on MeTV and being able to view the results at the end,” she said.

Since 2014, MeTV has been used to support the school’s positive behaviour programme, which helps children remain focused on their work.

The school will also receive an extra $27,000 in equity funding next year as part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to provide Victorian schools with an extra $747 million over the next four years.

Minister for Education James Merlino visited the school last Tuesday as part of

the celebrations.

“We’re investing almost $4 billion to make Victoria the Education State, so every community has access to great local schools and every child gets the chance to succeed,” he said.

“MeTV shows the dedication of our teachers and staff, and the enthusiasm of our students,” he said.

“This has now spread to the US and Canada, and reached 1000 episodes.

“It’s a fantastic achievement from all those involved.

Mr Merlino said the school was a great example of how Victorian children were being supported to reach their full potential.

MP backs nappy initiative EVELYN MP Christine Fyffe is putting her support behind families in crisis by participating in a resourceful campaign for mothers called the Nappy Collective.

Mrs Fyffe’s office in Lilydale will become the drop off point for leftover nappies which will be donated to mothers who

are struggling to afford nappies.

“Considering how quickly a baby goes through a pack of nappies, the cost can be extremely burdensome,” she said.

It is not unusual for a baby to outgrow a particular size nappy or for a parent to have purchased the wrong brand.

The Nappy Collective which started in 2013 operates nationwide.

The initiative runs until Friday 30 October.

Miller is a phenomenal child actor, delivering a poignant, courageous central performance. Jackman is intimidating and deliciously hammy as Blackbeard, Garrett Hedlund is a brash yet noble Han Solo-type as Captain Hook, and the visual design is beautiful (despite some dodgy CGI).

In keeping with other recent revisionist takes on fairy tales, Pan takes an admirably mature, even subversive approach to its source material. While Peter Pan is about a boy who never grows up, Pan bravely addresses many

themes of adulthood, including responsibility, realising your limitations, lying and even chemical dependency (with Blackbeard coveting a powdery, regenerative substance produced by fairies).

But this mature approach may unsettle young viewers, as there is too much gritty seriousness amid the whimsy.

The tone is thus very inconsistent, and the film also has disjointed pacing and messy action choreography.

Pan is sloppy and perhaps too dark for its own good, but it’s still an entertaining and respectable effort.

Martin Yeats hangs tough

By DENNIS FULLER EMERALD GOLF THE second round of the threeround club championship took place at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday, with weather to match the brilliance of some play and a few clouds to match the other standards set.

Martin Yeats (12) went into the round with a three-stroke lead and came out the other end with a one-stroke lead to have 163 strokes.

He is one up on Mark Starick (11) with 164 and only one back again to Travis Gerbes (8) on 165.

It looks like a head-to-head battle between these three and I have a slight suspicion that Gerbes might just have the round in him to clinch the title, but Yeats is ultra-steady and Starick can peel off a stunning round without notice, so anything can happen.

The B Grade list was turned

upside down and slightly sideways because Ken Hill (18) went into the round with Ian Scott (26) one back followed by Ban Balfour (22) a couple more behind.

By the time all cards were tabulated, it was Balfour - who played an absolute blinder, 82 off the stick - to have a five-shot lead over Hill.

From further down the leaders’ board stormed Leigh Morison (19) with an 89 to leave him a further two shots back and Scott got lost somewhere to be a further 8 in arrears.

The way the round went, it would be surprising if they can catch Balfour, but Hill is quite capable of causing him a little more than a headache.

Balfour wrapped up the daily competition and B Grade with a nett 59 while John Carvill (17), who has hit a purple patch, took out A Grade with a nett 64. Hill

Stars dig in for victory YARRA Valley Ladies Cricket team bowled their first ball of the season last Sunday at their home club, Launching Place Cricket Club.

The conditions were perfect as they set up to combat Kingston Heath in the Cricket Victoria South East One Day competition.

YV Stars won the toss and elected to field, which turned out to be an excellent result as they tumbled through the opposition batting order, taking seven catches to dismiss Kingston Heath for 53 off 25 overs.

After a short break, the ladies went into their batting innings feeling confident.

However, the opposition took seven wickets for just 19 runs, turning the game on its head.

Looking down the barrel, captain Amanda Morrison dug in and put together a partnership with Stephanie Cousins to bring the Stars over the line with nine overs and four wickets in hand.

The ladies’ championship looks like a tight race where Davina Mackey leads from Brianna McCoy with Joanne Keys and Daisy Aitken in close attendance.

Mackey will be hard to catch as she has opened up a substantial lead.

Wednesday’s Obviously Flagging Golf (OFG) was Irish fourball where the playing partners multiply their points score on each hole, which results in high scores and much embarrassment.

Two teams came in with 80 points and shared the spoils of victory.

David O’Donnell and John Carvill paired for this score, as did Ken Hill and Philip Crossley.

Mick Petrie and John Piggott came in next and, despite scoring 52 points on the front nine, only came in with 72.

Wheeler on a good roll Round 2 AFTER a 15-year absence from Reeves Shield, Mountain Gate has hit the ground running with another promising day of cricket on day one of round two in the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association.

The Gators defeated last season’s premiers Johnson Park in round one and continued their form by knocking over the spirited Ferntree Gully for 109 with Victorian Country X1 representative Cameron Wheeler capturing 5/42.

Wheeler is continuing on from last season when he took 43 wickets at 7 and tied for the Lomax Medal with Lysterfield’s Brian Kulasena.

The Gully Blues also failed to combat spinner Kevin Attacador who chipped in with 3/24.

To the Gully’s credit, they have the Gators 5/78 at stumps; however, they are only one partnership away from another win.

Monbulk played well at home to Johnson Park as the Sharks batted first but were dismissed for an under par 160 as leg-spinner Chris Coen 3/23 and seamer Aaron Powell 3/16 controlled the game.

At stumps, Monbulk was well placed at 2/50 and the reigning premiers are looking at zero and two.

Hawks bundle out premiers for 160 it’s a boilover ROUND 2 at the Monbulk Cricket Club saw all four senior teams start their first two-day match while the four competitive junior teams all played another one-dayer.

The 1st XI bowled out last year’s premiers, Johnson Park, for 160 with Aaron Powell and Chris Coen taking three wickets apiece.

The Hawks are 2/50 in reply with skipper Shane Cosstick looking good at the crease.

The mighty MCG (Monbulk Cricket Ground) was also looking good for the ones’ clash.

The 2nd XI batted all day for 210, with Craig Broekhof top scoring with 50.

The 3rd and 4th XIs are both in tight battles in their split innings matches.
