Decades of co-operation EMERALD Co-operative commenced operation from humble beginnings in May 1945 in a small shed (pictured) which is on the present site of today’s operation.

Jack Eudey was the first elected chairman of the board of directors.

The co-operative started through discussion by farmers at the end of World War II, when stockfeed was in short supply in the region and farmers had to travel long distances to purchase chaff.

Harry Wise, one of the first directors, stated that they were to start in a small way and would need continued courageous spirit and co-operative effort.

That optimism became a passion to provide the community with their overall product and service requirements.

Seventy years later, Emerald Cooperative is still going strong, with increasing turnover and successfully meeting its mission to serve and support the community.

Companies trading within the co-operative are: Mitre10 Hardware; Mitre10 Garden and Landscape; Barry Plant Real Estate; Bendigo Bank Agency; and Elgas and BOC Gas Agencies.

Garden deal anger

By PETER DOUGLAS A NEGOTIATED licence between Parks Victoria and the owners of Burnham Beeches has angered a community group local to the Sherbrooke area.

The licence agreement will allow Burnham Beeches patrons use of the main entrance of the Alfred Nicholas Gardens, which Parks Victoria says is safer than the existing access point into the historic property.

While the licence does not provide for exclusive access, which means anyone will still be able to access the site via the road, the decision has upset the recently formed Burnham Beeches Community Information Group.

The burgeoning group formed after the 19 August public meeting at Ferny Creek Recreation Reserve, regarding the future of the historic site.

There are now about 200 people on the group’s mailing list.

Parks Victoria District Manager Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Ranges, Craig Bray, confirmed the agreement, and said the decision was based on safety.

“Parks Victoria has negotiated an access licence agreement with Burnham Beeches for use of the main entrance of the Alfred Nicholas Gardens under the Forests Act,” he said.

“Council has acknowledged access via the road through the Alfred Nicholas Gardens is safer than the existing access point into the Burnham Beeches property.

“Parks Victoria is an advocate of the local tourism industry and is supportive of Burnham Beeches as a tourism development.”

Mr Bray said it was proposed that a wire mesh fence would be removed by the developer at their expense, which would enhance the visitor experience and provide easier access.

Parks Victoria Acting District Manager, Matthew Hoogland, played down concerns over increased traffic, as a result of any future development at the site.

The group believes the entrance and driveway was not intended for high-traffic use. 145301 “Traffic will be limited to the driveway and is not expected to be an issue,” he said.

“A dedicated pedestrian path will be constructed at the neighbour’s cost, which will link the front gate to the existing pedestrian path for public safety.

“Parks Victoria was aware of the proposal for increased tourism accommodation prior to the licence agreement.”

Mr Hoogland said the exact date the driveway access would start was yet to be confirmed.

Yarra Ranges Council in August rejected a call from the owners for a planning scheme amendment that would allow about 60 hotel villas on the site.

The villas were to be sold as investment properties to raise funds to complete the overall development of Burnham Beeches.

The Alfred Nicholas Garden has a rich history in the area.

In 1965, the Alfred Nicholas Institute donated the gardens to the public through the Shire of Sherbrooke.

Parks Victoria manages the garden, while Burnham Beeches is privately owned by celebrity chef Shannon Bennett and developer Adam Garrisson.

Betty Marsden, president of The Save the Dandenongs League, said she was against the licence agreement.

“This was a private residence and was never intended for this type of use,” she said.

“Shannon Bennett raves on about his vision, but Alfred Nicholas had a vision, too.

Briefly Thieves don't sleep EMERALD Police are searching for a thief who made off with wooden sleepers from a memorial in Cockatoo earlier this month.

Senior Constable John Andrews told the Mail that between 29 September and 2 October, 19 sleepers were taken from a retaining wall at the Cockatoo memorial in the Alma Treloar Reserve, off McBride Street.

“The entire top row of sleepers have been stolen,” Sen Const Andrews said.

He said anyone who may have seen suspicious behaviour in the area, or who saw anyone leaving the reserve with sleepers, should contact Emerald Police on 5954 0200.

Heavy equipment stolen POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a truck, trailer and excavator worth hundreds of thousands of dollars were stolen from a Mount Evelyn factory.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said that in the early hours of Sunday, 4 October, thieves made off with the equipment from outside a factory on Clancy Road, Mount Evelyn.

Det Sgt Barrow said the truck was a white Kenworth flat-nose, the trailer was blue and the excavator was a red and white Takeuchi ninetonne excavator. The total value of the stolen items is about $200,000.

Pain won’t stop

By JESSE GRAHAM AND JODIE SYMONDS A TEENAGER was killed and eight others were hospitalised last Tuesday night in a single-car crash in Mount Evelyn, with police investigating the circumstances.

Police believe that a black, 1998 Holden Commodore was travelling south on Hereford Road, Mount Evelyn, at 6.15pm on Tuesday, 6 October, when the driver, a 22-year-old Mount Evelyn woman, lost control and crashed the car into a pole.

In a media conference on Wednesday, 7 October, Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) Sergeant Gerard Clanchy said that a 16-year-old girl was killed in the crash.

All of the other occupants of the car, including an 18-year-old man, a 22-year-old man, a 23-year-old woman, a 26-year-old woman, a 16-year-old girl and a 21-year-old man on the back seat, were injured and taken to various hospitals.

Det Sen Sgt Clanchy said the girl who was killed was sitting on the

lap of a 26-year-old man, who was in the passenger seat and is in a critical condition.

The driver was on her Probationary 2 (green P-plate) licence, and was taken to the Alfred Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Other media outlets have named the driver as 22-year-old Emily Toulson, a former Healesville resident, and the deceased as 16-yearold Amber Beard.

In the days following the crash, Amber’s Facebook page was flooded with heartfelt messages from grieving friends.

Victoria Police and Det Sen Sgt Clanchy were unable to confirm the names of those involved in the crash.

Det Sen Sgt Clanchy said the Commodore allegedly went around a bend on the wrong side of the road, clipping another car before the driver lost control and hit the pole.

“It’s irresponsible behaviour,” he said.

“We are very lucky that there’s not more seriously injured or deceased people involved.

“It’s exasperating – young people losing their lives under any circumstances is a waste to the community, and obviously very tragic for the families involved.”

The car had no registration plates at the time of the crash, and Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable (LSC), Scott Lardner said the car was allegedly seen around Lillydale Lake before the incident, LSC Lardner said the car was on an unregistered vehicle permit at the time.

“Realistically, it’s been used outside of those conditions – but that’s the least of the worries at this time,” he said.

“We were obviously concerned with getting the young people out and getting them medical attention.”

Describing the crash as like a “TAC ad”, LSC Lardner said there had been a “huge” ripple effect, on the families of those involved in the crash and the neighbours who came to help those in the car.

Det Sen Sgt Clanchy said that

passengers were spoken to on the night, and that “evidence” of alcohol was in the car, but that no charges had yet been laid.

He praised the efforts of neighbours who put out a fire in the car after the crash and said their actions may have saved the occupant’s lives.

“Those people have acted very courageously,” he said.

“No doubt if the car had caught fire, there would have been more of those killed inside.”

The crash pushed the provisional road toll up to 192 deaths, two more deaths than at the same time last year.

POLICE are hunting for vandals who smashed 19 windows at Mount Evelyn’s Yarra Hills Secondary College earlier this month, only to flee when an alarm went off.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barro, said that between 10.15pm and 10.30pm on Saturday, 3 October, unknown persons smashed 19 external windows at the Burdap Road campus.

Det Sgt Barrow said the vandals then gained entry to an office at the school, but triggered the alarm and fled before they had the chance to steal anything.

He said that $4000 worth of damage had been caused to the school.

“It’s a bit over the top, isn’t it?” Det Sgt Barrow said.

Car break-ins POLICE are appealing for information after a series of car break-ins in The Patch late last month, and are asking for witnesses to come forward.

Monbulk Police Leading Senior Constable Glen Barkway said that between 6pm and midnight on Monday, 28 September, cars were broken into in Halycon Avenue and View Road in The Patch.

LSC Barkway said GPS devices and cameras were some of the items stolen from the cars, and that two men were seen fleeing the area in View Road at 11.30pm.

THE generous efforts of Eastern Health donors and volunteers have been celebrated with a storyboard unveiled at Angliss Hospital.

The storyboard showcases the importance of volunteers, community groups, corporate partners, trusts and foundations in assisting Eastern Health to provide the best care possible for patients and residents.

Eastern Health Foundation Director, Anne Gribbin, said it was particularly special to celebrate generosity at the Angliss Hospital site.

“The gift of giving is responsible for turning the very first idea to create Angliss Hospital into a reality over 75 years ago,” Ms Gribbin said.

She thanked those who had shared their personal experiences on the storyboard.

“Each person has their own reasons for giving, which are so uplifting and inspiring.”

Angliss Hospital Chief of Clinical and Site Operations, Ben Kelly, said the storyboard highlighted the important role donors and volunteers played in improving the patient experience and overall community health.

“Contributions allow for special projects to be undertaken, new equipment to be purchased, improved facilities and comfortable care to be provided,” he said.

It was officially launched on Tuesday, 6 October, at an event attended by numerous special guests, including members of the Chandler and Angliss families, whose philanthropy was central in the development of the hospital.

As summer is fast approaching, there is another safety message I’m keen to share.

As families will soon be enjoying trips to the beach, lakes and rivers as well as spending time in the backyard pool, I would like to remind everyone to be vigilant with children around water.

It only takes a moment for a tragedy to occur and a lifetime of devastating consequences.

If you have a pool, ensure your fencing and gate comply with safety regulations and that the gate is kept shut at all times.

You can also find out more about pool fencing regulations on the council’s website www.yarraranges. vic.gov.au/poolfencing.

Lastly, never, ever leave a child unattended in your car.

Leaving children unattended in cars even for a short period of time can be fatal.

Let’s all enjoy the rest of spring and this summer season safely and make the most of the wonderful parks, gardens and recreation spots that the Yarra Ranges has to offer.

Burn-off is back

By JESSE GRAHAM A TWO-hectare fire in Yellingbo that took 60 firefighters some hours to contain was caused by a smouldering burn-off from two weeks ago, according to Yellingbo’s CFA Captain.

On Tuesday 6 October, CFA crews from the Upper Yarra area and through the Dandenong Ranges were called out to a fire on YellingboMacclesfield Road in Yellingbo.

The fire was called in at 1.39pm, after Yellingbo CFA Captain Paul Spinks said a burn-off from two weeks ago flared up in hot, dry and windy weather.

Describing the incident as a “freak accident”, Capt Spinks said that a house was immediately threatened by the blaze, and crews scrambled to its defence.

“It appeared it started from a burn from two weeks prior with green waste,” he said.

“The owners certainly believed it was dormant and that it was all out – it was just terrible luck.

“It did threaten a house very quickly within the first half-hour – with Yellingbo and Macclesfield’s appliances, we maintained protection of the house.”

Crews from Yellingbo, Macclesfield, Wandin, Seville and the Dandenong Ranges group of fire brigades rushed to the scene, with 15 vehicles and about 60 firefighters on the scene.

Capt Spinks said the fire was contained to two hectares within the first half-hour, and praised the

quick action of the local brigades for preventing the fire from getting worse.

“Even the firefighting models showed this could escalate, based on the area and the temperature,” he said.

“The quick response, quick thinking, water conservation and firefighting technique is what actually contained this fire.

“It was a fantastic effort by the CFA crews – it wouldn’t have been contained if it wasn’t for them.”

At the time of the fire, the temperature in the Yarra Valley was in the mid-thirties, with hot northerly winds coming through.

By 2pm, the CFA had issued a Watch and Act warning for the surrounding areas of Yellingbo, Woori Yallock, Wandin East, Hoddles Creek and Macclesfield, asking residents to monitor conditions and consider leaving the area.

This message was downgraded at 3.29pm, before the all-clear was given later in the afternoon.

Capt Spinks said that green waste, as with green hay, could often retain heat for long periods, as was the case with the Yellingbo fire – the hot and dry conditions of Monday and Tuesday gave the smouldering remnants the chance to flare up.

“It was a freak accident, no doubt about it,” he said.

He said that even when the fire was completely out, a thermal imaging camera registered 150 degrees of heat at the source of the fire – though no smoke was coming from the area.

Memorial to driver safety

By PETER DOUGLAS FOUR young CFA members in the Dandenongs and three community members were recently rewarded for completion of a defensive driving course.

Thanks to the Anthony and Travis Hall Memorial Driver Education Fund, the young members had the chance to participate in the Level One Defensive Driving Course.

To acknowledge their achievement, awards were present to Nathan Birch (Macclesfield CFA), Alexander Hatcher (Clematis CFA), Jake Honeyman (Belgrave CFA), Lincoln Bulkeley (Upwey CFA), Jack Anderson from Upper Ferntree Gully, Jay Visser from Selby and Jayden Stewart from Belgrave South.

The memorial fund perpetuates the memory of Anthony and Travis Hall, who were aged 15 and 13 respectively when they were killed in a road accident in Cockatoo in January 1995.

Rob, Allian, Kate and Jason French’s Laundry has a proud history in the Yarra and Dandenong Ranges dating back to the early 1920’s when the workers on the Maroondah Dam asked Mrs Rackor to do their washing. For most of its’ 90 plus year history, French’s was owned by the related Rackor, French and Hort families.

French’s in 1922 was a simple service, washing clothes for the men working on the construction of the Maroondah Dam. Dina Rackor and her daughter Wilma used a copper and a trough on the back verandah of their home. As more and more work came in they bought a commercial washing machine and a spinner and built a new construction. Healesville became the Mecca for Holiday makers, and this generated a higher demand for French’s Laundry.

Ervine French from Deniliquin married Wilma Rackor and together they grew a thriving business that took pride in servicing local customers as it does today. Ervine retired in 1964. Beril French and Jack took over the business and sold it 1988.

French’s under went several changes in ownership until the business tragically burnt to the ground in July 2012.

Although the business name changed from Rackor, to the Continental in the early years, it will always be known to the locals as French’s Laundry. An iconic Healesville and surrounding area institution.

It was this longevity and local history that attracted Rob and Ashley to purchase French’s Laundry.

Rob and Ash have firm ideals about the type of business they wanted to buy, these included, a business that COULD NOT BE BOUGHT by an overseas company, providing a quality service to Hotel’s and B&B’s, a business with Family and community connections, a business that creates local employment (Kate and Jason are both local Healesvillians), plus a business that had stood the test of time French’s ticked all the boxes.

Since taking over Frenchs Rob and Ash are working with and supporting SIGN FOR LIFE and employ hearing impaired duo Marissa and Gordon in the laundry. French’s Laundry also works with ALKIRA, who assist Down Syndrome adults to find meaningful paid work.

Another and welcome community service, French’s donated 300 clean towels, 60 woolly blankets and 25 comfy pillows, to the City Salvation Army, so that homeless people did not go cold throughout this chilly winter. After the fire French’s Laundry relocated to London Drive in Bayswater, but with daily deliveries to the Yarra and Dandenong Ranges, sees itself very much a part of the local community.

This historic 90 year old business services many local accommodation, food and beverage businesses in the across entire Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges. Rob and Ashely are building a future based on high quality products, old fashioned customer service and true family values.

Upwey brigade members and the fund management committee are thrilled the objective of the fund has now been achieved for 18 years.

They will continue to be provided annually.

Some signs for the times CARDINIA Shire Council is replacing township entrance signs across the shire.

The signs also have a fresh new look which includes the council’s logo, which was unveiled last year.

The replacement program will start in Central Ward this month. Mayor Leticia Wilmot said many of the existing signs were out-dated and in varying states of disrepair.

Angels help

By PETER DOUGLAS THE Dandenong Ranges community is being encouraged to throw its support behind the Avonsleigh Angels fund-raising dinner this Friday.

Held to support the families and friends affected by the tragic accident in Avonsleigh in June this year, the event will be held at the Paradise Valley Hotel at 7pm and features live entertainment and a three-course set menu.

Sharn Walker, Felisha Allen and Jason Breakwell lost their lives after their car hit a tree along Phillip Road, Avonsleigh, on the afternoon of 30 June.

Their friend Jake Mitchell, 19, survived the crash.

Event co-ordinator, Julie Hoffman, said it was important the community came together at difficult times such as this.

Over the past few months, the incident has drawn an outpouring of emotion.

Many moving tributes have been held around the region, including at this football season’s Emerald versus GembrookCockatoo football match, where the teens all had strong links.

The trio also had close ties to the Emerald Football Club and the Emerald Secondary College.

Emerald Secondary College

has also endured a tough time, because they were well-known within the school community and both girls were in Year 11.

Principal at the time Mike Jaremczuk said after the incident the teens were well-known and popular among their peers. “The two girls were both students here and really wellliked,� he said. “Jason was a student last year ... he was a charismatic kid, well-liked and had many great mates. “It’s a complete tragedy, which will have a big impact on the community.�

Letters Extreme measures needed LAST Tuesday was a taste of the forthcoming summer bushfire season.

At least six different fires burned on a day of Total Fire Ban in locations surrounding the Dandenongs.

Census information reveals thousands of residents live in the Dandenongs between Wellington Road in the south and Coldstream in the north.

All depend upon narrow, often winding, twolane roads to escape in the event of disastrous fires.

These they must share with CFA and other emergency vehicles, plus visitors who often choke roads in their curiosity.

Lycra-clad cyclists exercising in the hills add to the traffic mix.

It has been estimated it would take several hours for residents to get to safety by car, if all went well.

Meanwhile, depending upon wind speeds, the fire front could spread, as it did on Black Saturday, 15km in six minutes.

I and my wife have lived in the hills for 45plus years and would live nowhere else on at least 355 days per year.

Those 10 other extreme fire danger days must be acted upon.

We both evacuate our home on extreme fire danger days as early as 7am.

Every hills resident owes a duty to their family and themselves to become involved in local

Fire Guard groups.

Every resident should have developed a written and practiced fire plan for their home and family.

Government must act to eliminate motorists and cyclists from entering the hills on days of acute fire danger and especially Code Red alert days.

Road blocks need to be established at Upper Ferntree Gully, Montrose, Lilydale, Beaconsfield, Lysterfield and Belgrave South.

Speak up on adoption THE silence from our Deputy Premier, James Merlino, over same-sex adoption legislation is deafening.

While Premier Daniel Andrews is very outspoken and undoubtedly the leading advocate of the proposed change, we have not heard a peep from our Jim. I would have expected James espouse his strong and deeply held moralistic views on this issue, given he fought so strongly against the decriminalisation of abortion only a few years ago.

Box Hill moves in

By JESSE GRAHAM BOX Hill Institute could be the taker for Lilydale’s former Swinburne campus, with an announcement about the campus on the horizon, according to the government.

Box Hill Institute Group CEO, Norman Gray, told the Mail on Wednesday, 7 October that the organisation had “participated“ in the Expressions of Interest (EOI) process for the campus, which closed down in mid-2013.

He said the group’s vision for the site was “innovative and exciting“, and went beyond the requirement of opening the campus for TAFE and higher education. “We propose to transform it into a comprehensive education precinct for the community that truly encompasses life long learning - from early childhood to higher education and beyond,“ Mr Gray said.

Box Hill Institute opened a campus in Lilydale at the start of the year near the former Swinburne campus, though Mr Gray did not indicate whether this campus would move to the Swinburne site if approved.

A spokesperson for Training and Skills Minister, Steve Herbert, told the Mail on 25 September that the Victorian Government expected to make an announcement about the EOI process “soon�.

The spokesperson said the government was “on track to reopen the site next year�, and said the government had made a $10 million election commitment to re-open the site for TAFE and higher education.

They said the campus was “mothballed� by the former Liberal Government.

Mr Herbert said said at the announcement of the EOI process on 15 June that classes would be run-

Evelyn MP, Christine Fyffe, said that she would be waiting for the announcement. “I’m waiting, I’m waiting,� she said. “I wish they would, so that the students, who are planning further education next year, will know what’s on offer. “They have to start making their applications - they’ll be talking to career advisors - it’s all done before exams start.�

Responding to the claim that the former government had "mothballed" the site, Ms Fyffe said the

decision to close the campus was Swinburne's alone.

"The previous government was not told by Swinburne that they were closing," she said.

According to the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC)’s website, course applications closed at 5pm on 30 September, with late course applications closing on 6 November and very late applications closing on 4 December - late applications carry heavier fees.

Change of preferences for undergraduate courses open as of 9am on 23 November, and close at noon on 16 December.

Grand final blitz gets results

By JESSE GRAHAM IT WAS a surprising Grand Final long weekend for the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol, with more than 100 drivers flouting the law despite a well-advertised police blitz.

Over the Grand Final long weekend, Friday 2 October-Sunday 4 October, police in the Yarra Ranges detected 156 traffic offences, 106 of which were for speeding alone.

Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Sergeant, John Morgan said he was surprised by the results, due to how well police had advertised their road blitz across the state. “We set up a little laser-sight in Maroondah Highway, outside McDonalds (Lilydale) on the Sunday morning - and it’s pretty well-publicised that there’re coppers all over the road,� Sgt Morgan said. “We got 16 in just two hours, and we ended up getting 38 for the shift - that included nine people for driving unregistered, two or three for driving while disqualified and a couple for driving while unlicensed. “It surprises you, that it’s so wellpublicised and that people just continue to speed as if they’re not going to get caught.�

He said that, with only one officer off during the weekend, the Yarra Ranges had “maximum resources� on the road.

One of the more notable cases came when police detected a driver on Swansea Road in Mount Evelyn and detected him travelling at 86 kilometres per hour in a 60 kilometre zone. “He was all over the road,� Sgt Morgan said. “We pulled him over and we realised straight away that he was drunk. “We impounded his car for 28 days, we served an immediate licence suspension to him and he’ll be going to court for some very serious charges.�

He said the man, a 59-year-old Heathmont man, returned a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .190 - almost four times the legal limit for fully-licensed drivers, and is expected to lose his licence for four years.

Over the weekend, four drivers were caught for drink driving; four were booked for drug driving, though Sgt Morgan said the statistics may be higher due to late reporting.

Eighteen unregistered vehicles were detected by police over the weekend, while four drivers were found to be driving while disqualified or suspended and another five were caught driving without a licence.

In neighbouring Cardinia, 116 offences were recorded, 81 of which were for speeding alone, three were for drink driving and two were for drug driving.

The University of Melbourne has focused on the town to test a new smartphone application.

The Future Mobility Sensing (FMS) app is expected to provide more detailed information than traditional paper-based diaries.

Professor Stephan Winter said transport planners relied on surveys to understand how, where and when travel was made

across the city.

The app simplifies data collection by automatically tracing user movements across the day.

By tapping into various smartphone sensors, such as GPS and accelerometer technology, detailed descriptions of routes can be constructed.

They tackled the track

By PETER DOUGLAS A GROUP of eight adventurous students from Emerald Secondary College have just returned from a trip of a lifetime, tackling the Kokoda Track.

After receiving the opportunity to take on the challenge, thanks to the school and the Duke of Edinburgh Award, the students completed the 10-day journey in Papua New Guinea and all agreed it left lasting memories.

Participating in the adventure were students Matilda Sinclair, Tyler Wills, Chloe Robinett, Ryan Hall, Brad Francis, Hamish Burnie, Kealy Jordan-Hill and Nathaniel Vanderhulst.

Teachers Shane Closter and Tanya Moran also joined the enthusiastic bunch on

their journey and said they couldn’t be prouder of their students’ achievements.

The adventure is designed to build skills in young people that will equip them for life and work.

Judging by their responses, the trip seems to have lived up to expectations.

Brad said he had never completed anything so fulfilling.

“It was full of physical and mental barriers that you had to keep climbing to get over,” he said.

“Getting there is the most exciting part of the trip as the anticipation builds.

“Each flight and step brings you closer to Kokoda.”

Meanwhile, Chloe said, upon completion of the track, it was difficult to express

the sense of achievement.

“Right now, for the first time in my life, I cannot even find words for what was the most amazing experience in my life,” she said.

“And I know why.

“There are no words to describe the breath-taking views.”

Some of the students trained to partake in the walk, while none expected an easy time.

Ryan said he needed to prepare mentally.

“I knew we had to put in some hard yards over the next four months, conditioning our bodies to take on the track,” he said.

“Overall, the trip was an experience that I will never forget.”

Club rings in world champ

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS KNOX Gymnastics Club in Ferntree Gully has a new edition to its coaching staff in the form of former world champion gymnast Dong Zhen.

Dong Zhen is an event specialist on still rings and pommel horse and won first place on still rings at the 1999 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

The 38-year-old gymnast from Tianjin in China has worked all over the world coach-

ing and passing on his skills but has found working at Knox Gymnastic Club a real pleasure.

“A friend introduced me to this club and I am really enjoying working with these students,” he said.

“Working with the younger children is a lot of fun, they are just so cute.”

Mr Dong has taken on the responsibility of coaching the level four and higher students at the club and preparing them for competition.

Manager of the gymnastics club Rebecca Tilley said it was very exciting to have such a high calibre athlete coaching at the club.

“It’s absolutely fantastic,” she said.

“Having an athlete of his calibre choose the join the club is a great honour.”

Ms Tilley said the students are working very hard under Mr Dong’s direction but they said they also have a lot of respect and admiration for him.

“Many of our students haven’t stopped smiling since he arrived here,” she said.

Knox Gymnastics Club has been operating for about 25 years and has had many competition successes but Ms Tilley is hoping Mr Dong can take the club to the next level.

“I’m sure he will be a great help for competitions and attracting new talent to the club but, most importantly, he’s really boosted our students' confidence,” she said.

By PETER DOUGLAS THE Mount Evelyn Street Party is ready to hit town again.

The biennial community event will go ahead from 10am to 3pm on Saturday, 24 October, down the middle of the Wray Crescent shopping strip.

With a theme harking back to the time of the Melbourne Olympics, and the beginnings of rock ‘n’ roll, guests are invited to celebrate everything in Mt Evelyn in 1950s style.

Organisers are celebrating with the theme, ‘Memories are made of this’, taken from the hit song made popular by Dean Martin in 1956.

In addition to the wonderful community festival fare, there’ll be classic cars, rock ‘n’ roll music and dancing in the street.

There will be performances from local schools and musicians, Go Dance, Edge Martial Arts as well as a few special treats this year to suite the 1950s theme.

They are the Bebop Vic dance demonstration and workshop, Nick Prelorenzo as Elvis, Rockbottom James and Quadrajet as well as well-known rock ‘n’ roll outfit, the Blackhill Ramblers.

So get your ‘50s gear on and get ready to dance. Miss Lady A Broad, winner of the 2013 Viva Las Vegas Pin Up Competition and Mt Evelyn local, will host the inaugural Mr and Miss Mount Evelyn Pin Up Competition.

Super stick expo to walk the walk LOCAL school and community bus driver, Kerry Champness, has been acquiring walking sticks for the past 18 years.

Now, he has created an exhibition that will feature his incredible collection, which will be launched at the Emerald Museum in Nobelius Heritage Park, Crichton Road, Emerald, on Sunday 18 October at 1pm.

The collection includes a rare wooden cane featuring a snake shaft and a segmented animal bone cane with a carved handle of a dog’s head.

Several antique canes linked to local families will also be part of the exhibition including a wooden cane used by J. Durban Stuart, whose uncle was born on the Emerald diggings in 1861.

Garden open

Durban Stuart ran a lavender farm in Emerald along with Arch Nobelius in the 1940s.

Mr Champness said walking sticks had been part of society since ancient man fashioned a cane from a tree branch.

“Since that time, they have been used for decoration and practicality and have represented symbols of power, faith, magic and fashion,” he said.

The museum will continue to feature a rare collection of antique boxes, also owned by Kerry.

The museum is open Wednesdays from 10am to 3pm, and Sundays from 1.30pm to 4pm.

Entry is by donation.

Kerry Champness has been collecting rare walking sticks for the past 18 years.

‘MUSIC, Now and Then’ is the much anticipated concert that will be performed by the Southern Voices Choir.

The concert will be held on Saturday, 17 October, at 7pm at the Rowville Performing Arts Centre at Rowville Secondary College, located in Humphries Way. As suggested in the title, the concert will take the audience on a musical journey through time, beginning with the earliest known written manuscript, called ‘Summer is a-comin’ in’.

The repertoire will venture through the baroque, classical and romantic eras, ending with the sounds of today.

In its journey, this concert aims to show how music has been a part of human existence, both now and then, and this will be celebrated through the fine selection of songs.

All levels are involved in the performance, from the choir’s brand-new training choirs to the chorale, the senior young adult choir.

Southern Voices is a multi-level choir, ranging from choristers as young as seven years old, to the age of 26.

Southern Voices rehearses on Thursday evenings in Rowville at the Salvation Army Centre.

Yeats leads Young athletes lap track at start of three-round

By DENNIS FULLER EXPECTATIONS were high at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday with the first day of the three-round championships up for grabs.

As the rounds evolved, the expectations of many were replaced by the infuriating reality that golf embodies.

The club championship leader in A Grade is Martin Yeats, who scored 81 off the stick to lead by three strokes for Mark Starick (11) with 84.

Yeats leads the handicap section with 69 by one stroke from John Carvill (17) on 70.

In B Grade, the runaway leader by a country mile plus three chain is Ian Scott (27) on 90 from, in second place, Ben Balfour (22) on 92.

Scott heads up the nett section with 63 from Ben Balfour and David Aitken (27)

who both carded 70.

John Fisher was nearest the pin on the 4th, John Keys the 7th, Yeats the 12th, Travis Gerbes the 13th and, as usual, Peter Glasscock shoved the pro pin cash into his pocket on the 18th.

The leaders in the ladies championship at the minute is Petra Jones with Daisy Mackey right on her heels ready to spring to the lead.

Wednesday’s Old and Floppy Golf (OFG) was a stroke event played twice over the old nine holes, and this obviously suited Moss Fuller (26) down to the ground because it was won in a canter with a nett score of 67 to be the only player to break par.

Next Saturday is the second of the three rounds for the championships and out of left field came Martin Yeats who just might take some reeling in.

ALL the fun, colour and noise of track and field athletics returned to Morrison Reserve, Mount Evelyn, on Saturday morning.

The opening round of the Little Athletics summer season started with fantastic numbers in all grades, especially the open boys and girls (13-15 years).

This week the club had 70m, 100m, 200m and 1500m on the track and various age groups competing in discus, shot put, long jump, triple jump and high jump events.

There were plenty of smiles, laughter and new friendships made

on a sensational opening day.

The senior athletics team competed in round 1 of the Athletics Victoria AV Shield competition this week at Nunawading.

An excellent turnout of athletes had the club recording results in almost every event.

A very big welcome to Darcy Price (who broke two club records), Scott Sutton, Jordan Brown, Harry Norman, Michaela Duncan (two records), Ella Strudley, Kathi Hewitson and Tailor Pace.

They were all new athletes who competed for the first time at an AV Shield competition.

Full results will be available later this week.

Next week, the club has its Little Athletics from 8.30am on Saturday.

Arrive early to help set up.

Just ask how you can help, because there is plenty to do.

The seniors next compete in two weeks on 24 October at the home track at Morrison Reserve.

Put it in the diary as an opportunity to watch (or compete) in some local athletics.

Hawks start season in fine old style

By STEVE UTTING ROUND one of cricket got underway for the Monbulk Hawks over the weekend.

The club’s four senior teams all played one-dayers, as did three of their competitive junior sides.

The highlight of the weekend was the three out of three wins to the junior sides and the 3rd XI (last season’s premiers) winning their 14th match in a row.

The 1st XI, playing against last year’s runners-up, fell five runs short of Eildon Park’s 130.

Jason Fraser nearly did the job, again making 50no, and was well backed by young gun Brodie Emmett who made 40.

The firsts also welcomed back Chris Coen who took 3/21.

Other highlights in the senior grades included Chris Martin 4/23 in the seconds and in the winning thirds, Clayton Spooner 39, Evan Binding 3/18 and Daniel Clark 3/18 and 33.

The juniors all played great

team cricket to register first-up wins.

Individual highlights included: Under 16s: Aussie Richardson 20no, Luke Buckley 3/13, Daniel Rak 2/2, Under 14s: Josh Spencer 25no, TJ Utting 21, Sage Farmer 20no, TJ Utting 2/3, Dylan Goldberg 2/5, Under 12s Gold - Jay Spencer 36no, Jai Farmer 23no, Tom Donald 22no.

The Under 12s Maroon team had a bye and the Under 11s and Under 10s don’t start for a few weeks.

With more registrations this week, the club now have an Under 10s Gold and an Under 10s Maroon team.

This Friday night (16 October) is registration night for the Milo in2Cricket program.

With more than 100 participants for the past five years, this program is one of the most successful in the state, including one of the largest for female participants.

Slow bowlers prove handful

By CHRIS ANDERSON AFTER a long, drawn out winter - where Hawthorn supporters were the only winner - cricket was back on the main stage in the Yarra Valley last Saturday.

As is always the case, Round 1 saw the cobwebs blown off by the batsmen with most struggling to post significant scores, while the big winners of the day were the slow bowlers, whose patience and guile won the day.

Woori Yallock hits the field this season as reigning premiers, and they started with a clinical win against Yarra Junction at home.

The Tigers started their title defence in the field and battled hard to remove the Yarra Junction wickets.

The standout with the bat for the Eagles was captain Quinton Hodgkinson (44) who has plenty resting on his shoulders this season if the Eagles are to return to finals action this season.

He was ably supported by Michael Scott with 22, but the Eagles lacked enough spark and were bowled out for 123.

Spinner Ben Hayes (3/16) and opening bowler Simon Young (2/22) were the main protagonists with the ball.

Early in the season, any total can be tricky to chase, but the talent of Woori Yallock top order bat Daniel Mock shone through as the former captain sensed the game situation and anchored the chase.

With a well-compiled 55no, Mock ensured that while he was at the wicket, the Tigers were no chance of losing this contest.

Spinner Keven Bomford (2/21) provided some food for thought for the batsmen, but with captain Michael King chiming in with a valuable 23, Woori Yallock chased down the target with six wickets in hand.

Hoddles Creek posted a significant Round 1 victory against a new-look Seville line up.

The Wombats batted first, and worked consistently with the bat to post a reasonable total of 150.

Warwick Weir (45) provided the backbone to the innings where his experience guided a line-up that provided glimpses of running away with the game, but was continually pegged back by regular wickets.

Andy Kay celebrated his return to cricket, capturing four wickets with his probings spinners, while youngster Mark Sandfort (3/42) provided the early impetus for the Seville bowlers.

In return, Seville’s young batting line-up couldn’t manage the skill, and tactical nous, of Hoddles Creek champ Brenton Derix whose five

wickets all but rendered the chase over as the Blues stumbled to be all out for 91.

It was Kay who again held things together with the bat, but his contribution of 32 wouldn’t be enough.

In the final game of DJ Strachan Shield, Healesville stamped their claims to be a more formidable force this season with a well-rounded victory over Mount Evelyn on the road.

Healesville batted first and were off to a flyer, courtesy of Michael Jackson (35), but with his wicket, and the run rate slowing, one wondered whether the Bloods would fall into poor habits.

The Bloods have recruited well over the off season, and bolstered the top order with some key bats from up the line.

Brandon D’Amore (32) showed the value he will have for this line-up as his patient innings held things together for the Bloods through the crucial middle overs, and guided his side to a position on which they could attack.

Captain Ash Hamer (38) took up the offer and his quick innings led the visitors to a competitive 166 off the allotted overs.

On a quick Mount Evelyn Reserve, the home team entered the chase confident of chasing the runs, but early wickets put the home side on the back foot from which they couldn’t recover.

The probing line and lengths of Ben Wallace (3/29) and Dylan Moore (2/16) ensured the Bloods would turn the screws on a struggling Rovers line-up, and despite the youngsters showing fight with the bat, and a fighting innings from Luke Jones (31), the home side never threatened the total, being bowled out in the final over for 113.

Although being early days, with back-to-back one dayers next weekend, all sides need to make an impression if they are serious about playing finals.

Healesville and Hoddles Creek made the best starts possible in their pursuit of gaining a spot in finals action after disappointing years last season, and both have enough experience in their line-ups to warrant claims, while Seville and Mount Evelyn will need to usher and develop their young batting line-ups if they are to stay with the main pack.

Woori Yallock and Warburton-Millgrove, last year’s grand finalists, look again to be the teams to chase.

The final team in DJ Strachan Shield, Yarra Junction, provide the X Factor in the competition with talent that enabled them to reach the grand final two years ago, but if they get it wrong, they miss finals as they did last season.
