AN EARLY hot spell has taken its toll on local wildlife, with Jirrahlinga Wildlife Sanctuary busy treating distressed animals and birds.

Senior keeper Judy O’Brien said the recent school holidays were unusually busy at the shelter, with more people out and about and demand for help with animals up about 30 per cent on previous years because of the heat.

Baby magpies and ring-tailed possums topped the list, she said, with staff at the Barwon Heads facility keeping a sharp eye on all guests as the weather turned cooler.

A sudden change in temperature could be fatal for young ring-tailed possums, Ms O’Brien explained. “For the next few days we’ll have to keep an eye on them.�

Many of the possums had become exhausted in the heat and fallen out of the trees.

Young magpies, many just learning to fly, had also been brought into the centre for attention, Ms O’Brien said.

The influx of holidaymakers during the school break meant more people were around in the heat wave to come across distressed wildlife.

Some of the birds were trying to fly but others had wandered close to the road and had been brought in for their own safety, Ms O’Brien said.

Jirrahlinga, on the northern edge of Barwon Heads, has been operating the sanctuary to care and rehabilitate wildlife since 1977.

HEART attack and car accident victims face some of the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s longest or shortest waits for ambulances depending on where they live in the Geelong region, according to new figures.

Ambulance Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual report said people suffering code-one emergencies in Golden Plains Shire endured the slowest response times.

Bannockburn residents could wait almost 22 minutes, the report said.

But waits in the Geelong urban area generally lasted 13 minutes and 26 seconds.

The stark divide between country and city call-outs was reflected across the state.

Ambulance Victoria has a response time target for code-one incidents of 15 minutes for 85 per cent of calls.

Only 21.4 per cent of the 632 Golden Plains call outs received a response within the recommended 15 minutes, with an average wait time of almost 22 minutes.

But more than 72 per cent of Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 14,100 calls had response times within 15 minutes, with an average time of 13 minutes 26 seconds.

Ambulances responded to 34.6 per cent of Queenscliffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 208 code-one calls within 15 minutes for an average wait of almost 19 minutes.

About 45 per cent of the 1360 Surf Coast responses were within the prescribed 15 minutes, with patients waiting an average 18 minutes 26 seconds.

State-wide, Ambulance Victoria responded to 73.7 per cent of 321,839 code-ones within 15 minutes, with more than 80,000 emergency cases left waiting longer.

Ambulance Victoria acting chief executive officer Tony Walker conceded response times had to improve but maintained that clinical outcomes remained excellent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Despite our excellent clinical outcomes we are not meeting our response time targets,â&#x20AC;? Mr Walker said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We acknowledge that we need to improve our response to the community and are working with our staff, unions, health partners and government to implement strategies to do this. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The year again produced a record demand for our services, with our frontline crews attending more than 10,000 emergency cases each week.â&#x20AC;?

Mall behaviour hits the wall with user posts Double Take A VACANT shop in Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mall has received a temporary lease on life with quirky wall art seeking additions from passers-by.

Part of a #soyouknowgeelong campaign, the wall art on the former Banjos bakery invites people to write their thoughts about acceptable behaviour in shared spaces on Post-it notes.

The contributions will also appear on posters and signs for the mall and schools.

A City Hall spokesperson said the activity was based on the work of Taiwanese-American artist Candy Chang who created interactive public installations focussing on social issues.

THE issue of politicians and councillors (same thing, really) living in their electorates has been a longstanding and thorny issue but one politician sought to change the tone of the debate this week.

Western Victoria MP Simon Ramsay claimed in parliament that none of the recent Barwon Water board appointees lived in the region. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For reasons known only to (Environment) Minister (Lisa Neville) not one new board member at Barwon Water is from the Barwon Water catchment area - in fact all of them live in metropolitan Melbourne,â&#x20AC;? he proclaimed.

But a quick look at the list showed several obvious locals from new chair Jo Plummer to G21 chief Elaine Carbines and returning members Jodi Heath and the TACâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Rebecca Leonard.

They were a â&#x20AC;&#x153;creative and talented duoâ&#x20AC;?, it said, delivering a â&#x20AC;&#x153;sense of style and sophisticationâ&#x20AC;?.

The awards were apparently â&#x20AC;&#x153;pleased to announceâ&#x20AC;? the pairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s product was a category finalist.

But the awards didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t send the release. So it could only have come from one other source.

By PAUL MILLAR POLICE will conduct an ongoing crackdown on known crime hotspots in the region over summer after a 24-hour blitz on central Geelong this week.

In a show of force, police were out in numbers in a bid to regain the confidence of shop owners and to â&#x20AC;&#x153;reconnectâ&#x20AC;? with troubled youngsters on the city streets.

Police flooded the city centre and surrounding roads in a high-visibility initiative codenamed Operation City Safe.

Officers from local stations pooled resources and also hit the skate park area of Waurn Ponds and Corio Shopping Centre.

Geelong police Senior Sergeant Aaron Riches said five individuals had been caught driving while disqualified and five vehicles were found

to be unregistered.

Three people were fined $300 under local by-laws for being in possession of open alcohol containers.

Sen Sgt Riches said the operation was a success, with police going out of their way to establish contact with some of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s troubled youths.

Police directed up to 20 people to referral and support services, he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are already planning our next operation for the summer months.â&#x20AC;?

City’s slice of $1.3b army deal

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A GEELONG firm has won a slice of a $1.3 billion army vehicle contract.

RPC Technologies will be part of the supply chain for the land vehicle to be built in Bendigo.

The Land 121 contract for

the next generation of military vehicles went to Bendigo-based Thales for 1100 Hawkei military vehicles and 1000 trailers.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull travelled to Bendigo to announce the deal this week.

Corio-based RPC Technologies won a $5 million four-year

contract to supply the dashboard assemblies for the Hawkei.

The contract was conditional on Thales securing the Department of Defence job.

“RPC has the expertise required for the production of military vehicles,” Thales Australia chief Chris Jenkins said when an-

noucing the win for Geelong.

“Their commitment to excellence in manufacturing and value for money will benefit the Hawkei project, while also securing supply chain skills in Victoria.”

RPC Technologies managing director Tony Caristo said the company had worked with Thales

previously on a Bushmaster light vehicle, also used by Australian defence forces.

“This contract will help to secure the workforce of the Geelong plant and build RPC’s presence in defence,” Mr Caristo said.

Thales delivered six Hawkei vehicles to the Department of De-

fence for testing under the LAND 121 Phase 4 project.

RPC’s composite dashboard assemblies will help reduce the weight of the Hawkei vehicle to within its specified range. RPC’s expertise with composite materials could help the company win other work on the project.

Children’s safety comes first on Injury Free Day at Corio Bird park in

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN salt pan bid DISUSED Moolap salt pans earmarked for a $4 billion residential development should be left to the birds instead, according to environmentalists.

Geelong Environment Council will tomorrow launch its alternative proposal for a “birdlife and people’s park” on the site.

The Cheetham salt pans were “exceedingly valuable for migratory birdlife”, wrote council president Joan Lindros in a statement accompanying a park plan leaflet.

But State Government’s appointment of a Geelong Development Authority and references to developing the salt pans looked “ominous”, she wrote.

“A rehabilitated and protected Geelong salt fields would demonstrate a progressive Geelong, a community that recognises the need to protect and nurture its natural environment,” the leaflet said.

Thousands of jobs could flow from the proposed residential development, according to proponent Ridley.

The project would include a marina and canal-style housing.

The company has a lease on the 289-hectare Crown land site for salt production but would need to secure ownership to realise its development plan.

The centre marked Injury Free Day this week to highlight safety awareness and injury prevention to help keep kids and accidents separate.

Injury Free Day is a national safety awareness campaign initiated by national health promotion charity, the KIDS Foundation.

The foundation’s Susie O’Neill said 5000 children were injured and 100 hospitalised from accidents daily in Australia.

“Children are encouraged to embrace the Think Safe, Play Safe message and to get the whole preschool community involved in safety awareness,” Mrs O’Neill said.

“We encourage Injury Free Day to be both educational and fun. It’s a day that empowers children and the rest of the community.

Children at Happy Feet participated in teaching and learning activities that highlighted the importance of creating safety awareness at preschool and at home.

Happy Feet director Natalie Millsteed said safety was the centre’s highest priority.

“Our involvement in Injury Free Day has helped our 35 families and their enrolled children to focus on injury prevention in our own local community as well as reminding us that safety is an important national issue,” she said.

A $90 MILLION upgrade of Geelong’s Simonds Stadium has begun, Sport Minister John Eren has announced.

About 90 jobs in construction and 320 indirectlycreated positions would flow from the stage four redevelopment works, Mr Eren said.

The State Government will spend $80 million on the project, with the Cats and Geelong’s council covering the rest of the bill.

The project will replace the Brownlow and Jennings stands with a new grandstand while also delivering a rehabilitation centre and a medical centre.

Demolition work began this week. The project will expand the stadium’s capacity to 36,000.

Mr Eren said the completion of the development would allow the stadium to host more major events on top of A-league soccer and Big Bash cricket.

“The big AFL games are just the start. Twenty20 Cricket, A-League blockbusters and many more events will head the way of Geelong when this upgrade is complete," he said.

THE SURPRISE return of big southern bluefin tuna after an absence of more than four decades promises a financial windfall along the region’s coastline.

Dallas D’Silva, of state recreational angling body VRFish, said accommodation was sold out at Portland during its tuna run but towns like Torquay, Barwon Heads and Lorne could cater for even more visitors seeking the prized fish.

Local anglers said they had not seen big bluefin tuna in such numbers since the 1980s. Numerous tuna over 100kg were caught offshore between Barwon Heads and Lorne during the past week.

The tuna, prized in Japan as one of the world’s best sashimi fish, have been prowling waters 50m to 70m deep, around 5km to 8km offshore.

Mr D’Silva, VRFish’s general manager, said visiting anglers could begin fishing for tuna in the Geelong region instead of travelling to Portland if the region’s tuna boom continued.

“When the tuna are on in Portland it’s chockers, it’s booked out, but this could see a big change.”

Three years ago, during a quiet season, it was estimated that tuna hunters spent more than $10 million at Portland, Mr D’Silva said.

The value locally could easily be doubled, he said.

State Government studies showed that during one weekend in May 2010 fisheries staff recorded more than 500 boats setting out to catch tuna near

Portland, Port Fairy and Warrnambool.

“Recreational fishers travel from all over Victoria and interstate to fish for SBT (southern bluefin tuna), which brings significant economic benefits to the region,” a report said.

But Mr D’Silva said local ramps would be unable to cope with a big rise in usage.

“The ocean-going launching facilities are inadequate at places like Torquay and Lorne and hopefully this will draw the attention of the policymakers.”

Fishing experts struggled to explain why the tuna had returned in such size and numbers but Mr D’Silva said it could be a consequence of international commercial fishers now sticking to their quotas.

Mr D’Silva and others noted an abundance of baitfish in the region as the same time as the tuna.

Tackleworld Geelong’s Chris Pitman said the region was hosting its best tuna fishing in decades.

“There are a lot of theories why it’s happening but they seem to be following the baitfish and all the bait has moved through Bass Strait,” he said.

Anglers had also reported numerous dolphins and whales in the area.

“The whales are rounding up the bait and it’s easy feeding for the tuna,” Mr Pitman said.

A Japanese restauranteur bought a 223kg fish for a record price of $1.8 million in 2013. The fish are farmed off South Australia’s Port Lincoln, where they have become a lucrative export industry.

A VICTIM’S assistance service will operate out of Corio Police Station, taking impact statements to help lighten the load on officers.

Geelong Police Inspector Graham Banks said the service would provide face-to-face support, arranging access to services to help aid victims’ recovery.

The local area commander said welfare agency Centacare would operate the service to prevent clients becoming repeat victims.

“We’re very enthusiastic about it, as they provide a high level of services,“ he said.

“They work through issues face-to-face and they have the ability to provide practical assistance.”

Insp Banks said the counsellors would also be able to take victim impact statements, which would “alleviate the workload” on officers at the station.

The support service would operate out of the police station during business hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, he said.

Centacare aims to provide services to meet the “practical, emotional and psychological needs of victims of crime”.

PROPERTY have flat-lined in the Barwon region over the past 12 months, according to new figures.

Median residential prices were up only .6 per cent in the September quarter compared to the same time last year, said property valuation firm Propell.

The median price had “barely changed” to now sit at $439,000, Propell reported.

The figures mirrored recent statistics from real estate information firm RP Data, which also identified sluggish price growth in the region.

Both firms attributed Barwon with price increases lower than inflation.

The Barwon region covers Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula, Queenscliff and the shires of

Golden Plains and Colac Otway.

Propell’s report, based on an analysis of CoreLogic data, ranked Barwon seventh of Victoria’s 10 regional areas.

Western District, between Barwon and the South Australia border, had the highest growth rate, 12.2 per cent. Wimmera was the worst performer, with its median price falling 7.4 per cent.

Clueless candidate made grave mistake READING the article headlined ‘Telco tower grave fight’ (Independent, 25 September) brought a smile to my face.

IN THE 2 October Independent Suzanne Bridson commented about a feral who swore at three Muslim women and told them to speak English.

Ms Bridson said: “Why are we, as a society, still so hateful and prejudiced against people of other races?” and “We only seem to see ugly labels and not the beautiful individual person.”

Readers might notice how Ms Bridson used this incident to label all, presumably white, Australians as hateful, prejudiced racists.

A few days ago a Muslim attacked a police station in New South Wales and shot dead an employee before he himself was shot dead. Muslim leaders have not condemned the attack and politicians have been quick to make sure no blame is attached to the wider Muslim community.

Malcolm Turnbull said: “We must not vilify or blame the entire Muslim community with the actions of what is, in truth, a very, very small percentage of violent extremist individuals.”

So if a white Australian is bigoted toward Muslims then it is an indictment of all white Australians but if a Muslim murders an Australian then we must not feel that the wider Muslim community has anything to answer for. After all, as Ms Bridson said, they are all beautiful individual persons.

But to be consistent in her logic, shouldn’t Ms Bridson now ask: “Why are Muslims still so hateful and prejudiced against people of other religions?”

Somehow I doubt it.

Skullduggery and sharks RALPH Huisman outlined some intriguing political and financial skullduggery (Letters, 2 October).

If the British are somehow meddling with our financial sector then they’re doing a lousy job of it, from their point of view, given that we weathered the GFC in much better shape than they did and that our finances are more stable and transparent than in most other countries.

Or, as one of the banks used to say, “It’s your money, Ralph”.

Regarding the research finding that more sharks might mean less climate change (Double Take, 2 October), too many sharks might also cause rising sea levels, ironically.

Cool new finding AN IMPORTANT finding regarding climate change has been made in Europe.

Scientists in Germany’s Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research have identified a new process by which vast amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted into the atmosphere from the sea. This has the effect of cooling the climate.

The climate models used today have not taken this into account and so have overestimated the warming effects of increasing levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). Computer modelling has therefore been predicting exaggerated heating effects of carbon dioxide which has panicked western governments into addressing alleged climate threats posed by CO2.

It’s amazing. For over two decades we have been told the science is done and dusted and that nothing new is to be learnt about climate change.

However, the big worry is that all the bureaucrats and vested interest groups meeting in Paris next month will make decisions based on outmoded and dubious climate modelling.

Is it too much to hope that those meeting in Paris will have a change of heart and realise further research would be needed before taking any binding long-term action on climate?

Unfortunately, such hope is undermined by the extent to which global warming ideology has already won the day in the west.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN IT’S THE music that gets feet moving and bodies swaying to an infectious beat – reggae.

Organisers of World Reggae Jam hope to introduce more of Geelong to the beat at new community arts hub Kubu Studio.

Musicians from Australia, Africa, Brazil and Indonesia will unite to play reggae at the familyfriendly event.

The jam will feature Rastafarian favourites and originals plus African, Brazilian and Indonesian reggae.

Organiser Candice Feuerring said the event would also offer food, children’s activities and a “great community vibe”.

World Reggae Jam had a successful premiere at Geelong West’s Pizza Bar last year.

The event opens with Afrobeat’s Neeni-Tuti conducting a Nyabinghi African drum circle.

All drums and percussion instruments are welcome, with drum hire also available for $5.

A following reggae gig features Feuerring singing for Rasta Unity, Brazilian bass player Jahwise Elie, Indonesian singer Gito Redward and Senegal’s MG Kalonji.

Patrons also enjoy a reggae sing-along of well-known hits such as Bob Marley classics.

The World Reggae Jam collaborative featured talented musicians who had played around the world, Feuerring said.

“Most of the World Reggae Jam musicians are based in Geelong and surrounding areas, so we really wanted to bring the

positive message of reggae to our local community. The event will showcase Jamaican reggae and conscious original roots music, spreading a message of unity, respect and peace.”

Kubu Studio offers artists musicians, photographers and film makers a venue and exhibition space.

Director Emma Bottomley said the studio created bridges between cultures in the hope of fostering international artistic exchanges.

World Reggae Jam begins 4pm 17 October at Kubu Studio, Bayley St, Geelong.

2tbs olive oil 1 clove garlic crushed 2 carrots diced 500gm minced beef, 1 can tomato soup 1 onion chopped 4 bacon rashers 1 celery stick diced 1 can tomatoes 1tsp basil 8oz ribbon pasta grated cheese salt & pepper.

INGREDIENTS

Heat oil in frying pan add onion, garlic & bacon fry till onion is soft, add carrots & celery fry for 3 mins. Stir in beef mince until brown, add soup, tomatoes, basil salt & pepper, cook gently for 25 mins. Cook noodles and drain then add to beef mixture and fold through, turn into casserole dish and sprinkle cheese on top, cook in 180 oven for 30 minutes.

The cult folk tale follows the trials of long-suffering monk Tripitaka as he struggles to make his way from China to India to retrieve a sacred text that will bring happiness and balance to the world.

The road to enlightenment is paved with devious spirits and treacherous monsters, so Buddha sends some supernatural help in the form of Monkey, Pigsy and Sandy to assist their friend in need.

But the four need every ounce of cunning, strength and magic to survive the journey.

The legend of Monkey, as he is commonly known in Western cultures, has retained its relevance through centuries of re-

THEATRE meets acrobatics, martial arts and puppetry when cult television show Monkey Magic is reprised in Geelong.

Presented as part of the Melbourne Festival, Monkey … Journey to the West brings an age-old Chinese story into a modern western idiom.

The production creates a magical, action-packed adventure story for the stage based on the show broadcast on the ABC in the late ’70s and early ’80s.

With Bell Shakespeare’s John Bell and Helpmann Awardwinner Kim Carpenter as codirectors, the story is adapted by celebrated Australian playwright Donna Abela from Wu Cheng’en’s 16th Century novel, Journey to the West.

Expansion of private mental health services THE Geelong Clinic has partnered Australian Private Hospitals Association to promote Mental Health Week from 5 to 11 October.

The clinic has been hosting an inflatable elephant to help destigmatise mental illness and promote the message of creativity and hope.

The elephant represents the often silent suffering people can experience through not acknowledging the elephant in the room of mental illness.

Janine Haigh, General Manager, explains, the elephant also represents the barriers of recovery such as guilt, shame, trauma and worthlessness that hold back growth and healing.

The message that The Geelong Clinic and the Australian Private Hospitals Association seek to convey is that it’s okay to talk about mental health and to seek help.

They believe that consumers, families and carers too often avoid the topic because it is so confronting.

However, with as many as one in four Australians experiencing a mental health condition in one year the elephant in the room clearly is the need for more discussion and support to assist all Australians to understand the need to encourage on another and the importance of seeking and utilising help.

Like the elephant uses its trunk to communicate and gain sustenance, it is important that people continue to reach out to family, friends and professionals until they obtain the help that best meets their needs.

As many mental health conditions can relapse, its important that both consumers and their supporters have realistic expectations and keep persevering.

The need to practice a range of skills is also beneficial to promoting recovery, which at times can be challenging.

However, a range of therapies and interventions are available to assist recovery toward productive and meaningful lives.

The Geelong Clinic offers a range

cluding anxiety and depression.

Keeping cool WITH summer approaching, Geelong and Surf Coast residents are being given a helping hand to better prepare for and cope with heatwaves.

The Summer Heatwaves and Sustainability program is offering residents practical and independent information on how to stay cool in summer through free inhome visits, phone consultations and local community workshops.

Participants are also given tips on how to save money on their energy and water bills.

The project is a partnership between the City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast Shire and welfare organisation Kildonan UnitingCare and is funded with the support of the Victorian Government under the Victorian Adaptation and Sustainability Partnership.

Kildonan Chief Executive Officer, Stella Avramopoulos, said it

was important that people looked out for each other during the warmer months.

“The elderly and people experiencing illness are particularly vulnerable during extremely hot weather, so I’m urging people to check up on their relatives and neighbours when the temperature soars,” she said.

“Make sure they have enough food, water and medicines so they don’t have to go out in the heat and ensure they have a torch and a telephone that will work without electricity in case a heatwave causes a power blackout.”

The Summer Heatwaves and Sustainability Project also provides information on a number of simple measures that can help people save money on energy bills during summer.

IndySport New-look teams as local cricket swings into start of season

Young Cats battle old demons WITH the Sherrins put away for another six months, cricket gear is being dusted off all over Geelong as another season is about to kick off.

The Geelong Cricket Club already have one game under their belt. With the AFL Grand Final encroaching into October after a late start to the season due to the Cricket World Cup back in March, the Victorian Premier Cricket Association took the opportunity to kick off their season of the public holiday last Friday.

The Cats took on Prahran at home, with a fresh new look after club legend Andre Borovec took over the coaching reigns during the off season, with young gun Eamonn Vines assuming the captaincy role.

Batting first, the home side got off to a good start, Hayden Butterworth (69) looked back to his best after a lean spell last summer, while Joel Davies (59) returned from local club South Barwon to add some class at the top of the order.

Unfortunately, the same problem that occurred last season reared it’s head, as the middle order crumbled to see the Cats finish their 50 overs on 9/225.

In response, the Geelong bowlers struggled to make inroads as Prahran cruised to a nine wicket win with 4 overs to spare.

This weekend, Geelong travel to Casey/South Melbourne on Saturday for a one day game, before backing up on Sunday at home against Ringwood in another one dayer. In what could prove to be a crucial early season double header, the young squad should be able to bounce back and put some much needed points on the board.

In the Geelong Cricket Association, a somewhat tumultuous off season will be put to bed, and the business of playing cricket can be resumed.

Grant Dew, president for the past 6 seasons sensationally resigned from his

position in early September, citing personal reasons. As a ripple effect, this saw a flood of resignations, before Barry McFarlane stepped into the role and restored some stability.

Prior to that, the association had reduced the Player Points Cap to 40 after it set it at 45 last season, before reversing their decision and putting it back up to 42.

Division one will comprise the same 12 clubs that competed last season, after none of the division two clubs wanted to come up. There was however some movement between the second and third division, with Bell Park coming up into the second tier at the expense of Guild St Marys.

In division one, reigning premier St.Josephs look the team to beat again.

Their main challengers the past two years in North Geelong and South Barwon look to have lost some key players, Jake and Zac Thorne leaving the Magpies nest, while Joel Davies has left South to head back down to Geelong.

East Belmont welcomes back Sam

Scannell, James Menzies is back at Leopold, while Bell Post Hill have appointed Rhys Burke as captain, the young star moving across from St Peters only to unfortunately break his leg playing football which could delay his start.

It will be an intriguing season as the pack attempt to chase down St Josephs.

Big tuna, snapper, trevally thrill local anglers ADAM Van Der Lugt, Georgie Beeforth and Ricky Forte made the most of last weekend’s great weather, fishing Queenscliff Harbour for silver trevally.

Casting soft plastics, Georgie landed two of just on 35cm while Adam also caught a couple around the same size.

The trio noted that the most productive soft plastics were Gulp Turtleback worms in Pumpkin Green.

Craig Varker fished the harbour on Monday morning’s incoming bag for an impressive bag of 10 trevally to 35cm.

Pinkies to 50cm were also taken inside the harbour over the past week but, unlike the trevally, tended to move on quite quickly.

As everyone else headed west for tuna over the past few weeks, Gone Fishing Charters’s Chris Vasilevski had a hunch that some could be found a little closer to home.

Heading out of Queenscliff last Thursday and making his way down the coast a little, Chris started trolling around the plentiful bait marked on his sounder.

Soon after one of his rods screamed into action which led to a three-hour fight that ended with Chris boating a southern bluefin tuna of just over 100kg.

As a result, numerous boats were out over the weekend, with a few finding barrel tuna in 50m off Barwon Heads and all the way down to Lorne.

Further down the coast, Allan Brow trolled just out from Apollo Bay where he landed a tuna of 110kg on 15kg tackle after three hours and some smart boat manoeuvring.

Allan then hooked another tuna but pulled the hooks after three hours and 20 minutes.

Anglers fishing inside the bays turned their attention to snapper as the season switched into full force. Point Richards Channel was a hot spot with pilchard and silver whiting accounting for fish to 6kg.

Relatively new to Victorian anglers, the technique called micro jigging, which involves sounding fish then vertically jigging small specifically designed jigs, began taking off with snapper to 5kg.

Indented Heads produced reasonable numbers of squid around reef structure in four to five metres.

Size 3 jigs in white colours achieved the best results when fished around sunset.

The whiting in this neck of the woods was

a little slow but some of the fish that we caught averaged almost 40cm.

Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore returned from a trip to the Glenelg River where he spent numerous hours casting hard-body lures along the edges.

Michael caught bream and estuary perch, with that best bite at night under any form of light where the fish schooled in large numbers.

Freshwater anglers again caught Chinook salmon at Lake Bullen Merri.

Persistence paid off with fish of 2kg taken on pilchard fillet.

Next door, Lake Purrumbete fished well for brown trout to 1.5kg for anglers trolling the east bank at first light with Tassie Devil lures.

The Barwon River continued producing redfin around Buckley Falls on lures cast among the snags.

The reddies averaged around 800g.

Anglers will be spoilt for choice over the next week with snapper at Clifton Spring taking both bait and lure. Offshore from Barwon Heads should be worth fishing for large tuna or on the bottom fish for snapper and gummy shark.

The Barwon River should fish well for bream or mulloway on live baits, while rainbow trout should still be available in Highton’s St Augustine’s Lake for anglers using Powerbait on running-sinker rigs.
