Death of bushwalker Casey’s tips

By DANE LILLINGSTONE A 63-YEAR-OLD man has been found dead in the Main Range National Park near Goomburra, with police embarking on a seven-hour round trip by foot to retrieve the body.

Paramedics and police were alerted of the man’s body on Wednesday 30 September, about

6pm. It was confirmed the man suffered a heart attack while bushwalking with family.

The location of the body made it extremely difficult for police and ambulance services to retrieve the body and they were left with no choice but to go in by foot the following day.

Scam calls on the rise

Freak accident claims girl

AN accident on a property near Stanthorpe on Monday 5 October has claimed the life of a 13-year-old girl.

Emergency services were called to the property, about 12.45pm, on Dalcouth Street, Kyoomba when a forklift the girl was driving veered off a dirt track, throwing her out and landing on top of her. It has been reported that witnesses tried desperately to save the girl by performing CPR at the scene but were unable to resuscitate her.

Paramedics arrived at the scene but declared the girl deceased soon after arriving. Her next of kin were notified and investigations will continue into the incident.

ONE man is fed up over constant attempts of scams from suspicious phone calls to home telephone landlines.

Warwick’s Johno Felton said the calls had been constant for him until Telstra finally did something about it.

“These people are trying to get the old people’s money and they are trying to get the money through Telstra,” he said.

Johno said that initially he didn’t think anything was wrong with people claiming to be from Telstra and offering to cut his phone bill.

He got suspicious after they repeatedly tried to gather his personal information.

“One was from a landline in Australia; we’ll take $20 off your monthly phone bill, they told me. I checked their number and searched it online and a lot of people were reporting the same problem from that number,” he said.

Telstra said they had received over 4000 reports of scams from its customers this year. They also said that scammers trying to illegally obtain personal information were on the rise.

Some of the most common scams involve people who falsely claim to be

from Telstra or another provider, and ask for remote access to a consumer’s home computer.

They usually claim it is to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. Scammers have also been known to tell consumers their home phones will be disconnected if they don’t pay a fee.

The goal of these scammers is usually to obtain personal banking information.

Johno said the problem finally stopped when he called Telstra’s Unwelcome Calls Centre and they put a trace on his phone.

“After I got the trace put on from Telstra, I haven’t had any more calls,” he said.

Johno also believed that some of the scams were related to terrorist organisations.

“It’s the war within. You have to realise that terrorism isn’t only in Syria.

I’ve been told they’ll come cut your head off or blow your head off when you mention terrorism,” he said.

He said more should be done by the government to combat the calls.

“Get serious and stop the calls ripping off hardworking Australians' money,” he said.

Busy weekend for flight rescue

IT WAS a big weekend for RACQ CareFlight Rescue, with six motorbike accidents being attended over the long weekend with three in and around the Southern Downs.

On Sunday around 9.15am an 18-yearold man was airlifted to Toowoomba Hospital after coming off his bike at the Haworth Park motocross facility at Leyburn. The injuries were not serious.

Then around 10.45am later the same day, a 12-year-old boy from Tweed Heads was airlifted from the bike track at Gap Creek Farm after coming off his bike trying to avoid an accident in front of him.

He was airlifted with his mother to Toowoomba Hospital with a suspected fracture of his right femur.

That same afternoon, a man in his twenties was airlifted after a motorbike accident in the Cunningham’s Gap region.

About 3.20pm, rescue services were called after the man had an accident while attempting a large motocross jump.

He was treated onsite by the Warwickbased QAS and CareFlight’s Critical Care Doctor before being flown in a stable condition to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane with suspected head and spinal injuries.

Park process drags on

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE Southern Downs Regional Council’s park rationalisation process was criticised as ineffective in the council general meeting, with some questioning the length of time it is taking.

At least one member of the Park Rationalisation Committee (PRC) admitted that the process was taking too long, with community engagement on some of the first 12 parks still ongoing.

It was also noted in a parks committee report that even when community submissions had been made, some still had their requests ignored.

“It was noted that the process was taking a long time and council was receiving a battering in the meantime,” the report said.

“This matter needs to be finalised for the community as soon as possible.”

Councillor Jo McNally is part of the committee and admitted she thought the process wasn’t effective.

“There are 12 parks from the original list that need to be dealt with and we are going nowhere. We can’t add any more,” she said.

“I don’t think it’s working. We need to finalise those first 12 first.”

It was announced that three further

parks have had their fates sealed, with none of the parks receiving expressions of interest or support from the community.

Meadowbank Park on Hans Borgar Court will change tenure with the intention of fencing off the playground area and monitoring usage with the potential of leasing a section of the land for grazing.

Fairwill Drive Park on Homestead Road, Warwick, will become obsolete with expressions of interest expected to be sought to purchase or lease the land.

Little-known Glencairn Park will have some infrastructure relocated and have an area of its land offered to expressions of interest.

The Southern Downs is home to some 162 parks with the committee originally set up last year to assess the viability of all of them. In that time some decisions have been made but many in the community have been left in the dark over the process.

The contentious fate of Victory Park in Allora will be deferred until the November council meeting.

The park has been the most controversial due to a war memorial sited within it. There was a recommendation

“In my personal point of view, it’d be good if we could somehow speed it up and get to the end of it but we need to go through proper consultation with the community.”

No decision yet on free camping

By DANE LILLINGSTONE NON-COMMERCIAL camping in the Southern Downs is in the process of a shake-up with two consecutive council general meetings deferring a final decision on an overflow policy.

The Southern Downs Regional Council resolved at the August meeting to adopt a low-cost commercial stance to camping in the Southern Downs.

A change has been on the cards for the Southern Downs in response to the findings of the Regional Camping Stakeholder Group (RCSG) who have

been in place since July last year.

The RCSG was formed to investigate, develop and recommend a plan on how the Southern Downs would deal with issues around RV friendly status and non-commercial camping.

With non-commercial camping on the rise, there is an increasing need to balance the playing field with commercial parks.

As part of their new proposed changes, the council will maintain the free camping options of Leyburn, Dalveen and Allora that are already in

place in addition to improving the signage in these areas with information on caravan parks in the Southern Downs.

This would involve working with commercial providers to assist with the content and cost.

There will be new signage for RV parking in central Stanthorpe, namely Rogers and Creek streets.

Also, pending approval, commercial caravan parks will be given an option to apply for low-cost, low-infrastructure camping options within their existing parks. This will also require a 24-month

council general meeting with a 5-4 vote to carry the motion. Crs Blundell, Gow, Ingram, McNally and Meiklejohn voted for the motion with Bartley, Mackenzie, Pennisi and Rees voting against it.

Ms Dobie said the DSD employed three fulltime staff, three part-time staff and three casual tourist officers. They also manage Warwick and Stanthorpe’s Visitor Information Centres. Along with providing strategic direction, they are responsible for destination marketing.

“The grant from council covers employee costs and office and running costs,” she said.

The next step is a planned meeting on Tuesday 27 October at 6pm at the Warwick Town Hall to discuss the format of Jumpers and Jazz in July.

Drunken rampage in Stanthorpe A 29-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with a number of offences after a drunken rampage through Stanthorpe on Saturday night.

Police were originally called to the Murray Gardens Motel around 7.30pm on Saturday night after urgent calls from residents.

The man was reported to be attacking people and was armed with a knife. Initially, police could not locate the man, with one victim receiving slash wounds to his face and arms.

Police were then called to an address at Archibald Street for a complaint of a man attempting to smash his way into a house.

They found the man to be heavily intoxicated at the time, and he was later charged with assault, wilful damage to property and public nuisance.

Damage at Central Hotel Stanthorpe police continued their busy night on Saturday after being called to the Central Hotel just after midnight to evict an intoxicated patron.

The 25-year-old man became abusive after being approached by security and police. He is then alleged to have damaged the fence that surrounds hotel.

Police then located the man, who was charged with wilful damage.

A MUSIC festival at a private property in Eukey over the weekend has resulted in a number of drug charges.

It was reported that 16 people were charged with a variety of offences including possessing dangerous drugs such as amphetamines, cannabis, ecstasy, LSD and implements for the administration of dangerous drugs.

There were also charges for unlawfully possessing ammunition, drink driving, drug driving and a variety of traffic-related offences.

The festival itself, attended by over 150 people, is not said to have caused any charges at the venue, with police making the arrests from people travelling to and from the event.

By DANE LILLINGSTONE FOODASSIST Warwick is calling on the community for donations of seeds, soil, fertiliser or anything else used for gardening as they become self-sufficient in fresh produce.

FoodAssist Warwick supervisor Esther Spicer said the garden was growing but it still needed help.

“I can’t wait till we can put our own grown food in the hampers,” she said.

“All the seeds have been donated, and people have been dropping in coupons but at this point we’ve run out of soil. We need more soil and pots.”

“We have people coming in and saying we only heard about this morning. We still want to get the word out.”

“We’ve got a very loyal customer base who do spread the word for us.”

Soon they will be growing strawberries and they hope to one day grow watermelons.

Councillor Glyn Rees stopped by the operation, at 38 Percy Street, to have a look for himself and said the council may be able to help in the future.

“There’s always something the council may be able to help with,” he said.

“It’s about getting together a list of the primary needs. From a furnishing point of view, if there’s something within council properties we’re not using a great deal, we could look at donating. Regardless of what it is, it would be useful here anyway.

“We could it put out to the council or the community. I will talk to the Men’s Shed.

“If a lot more community groups and people are aware, I’m sure they’d support it, knowing the service they provide to the community.”

FoodAssist Warwick is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm.

AS part of RACQ Get Ready Queensland Week, information booths will be set up in Stanthorpe and Warwick to give people information on how to prepare for the oncoming storm and bushfire season.

All across Queensland, RACQ will be informing people on how to be prepared for the state's extreme weather through their disaster preparedness and resilience building program. The aim of the program is to make Queensland Australia’s most disaster-resilient state through relationships with local councils, public education and resources.

Southern Downs Regional Council is a supporter of the program which officially runs from 12 to 18 October.

The council’s disaster management co-ordinator Mark Saunders said it was important Southern Downs residents were ready for extreme weather events.

“When it comes to extreme weather events in Queensland, and in our region, it’s not so much a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’.

The more prepared we all are, the faster we’ll bounce back afterwards,” he said.

Representatives from the council, the SES, Rural Fire Service Queensland and Queensland Fire and Emergency Service will be holding information booths on the following days: * Tuesday 12 October, from 10am-3pm, at Farley Piazza on Maryland Street, Stanthorpe.

Authorities are aiming to make Queensland the most disaster-resilient state in Australia. * Wednesday 13 October and Thursday 14 October, from 9.30am-4pm, at Rose City Shopping Centre, Warwick.

Mr Saunders said it was an opportunity for residents to get important information for protecting themselves and their homes.

“The agency representatives will be able to answer residents’ questions about planning and preparing for disasters, and residents will able to view the latest Flood Studies and Bush Fire Risk interactive mapping

to see if their properties would be at risk,” he said.

“As a further preparedness strategy, we’ll also be offering a free service to residents at the booths, to scan and save on USB memory sticks a range of their personal files, for example building, contents and car insurance policies, household goods inventories, wills, deeds and banking documents, passports, birth and marriage certificates, medical records and emergency contacts. These USB sticks can then be stored by residents in their emergency kits.

“So, don’t wait for a disaster to happen before you think about how you, your family, and your pets and animals, are going to survive - prepare an emergency plan, emergency kit, and your property today, and drop into one of the booths to discuss how to ‘Get Ready’.”

From memory Donna, your original letter on the issue of recycle bins took a shot at the council for money wastage.

Your suggestion was that the recycle bin may not be needed as often, which I felt was an erroneous assertion. An example would be ‘The Joneses’ - mum, dad and three kids who recycle in any given week a number of beer and wine bottles, milk and soft drink containers along with fruit cans, jam jars etc. and so on.

You may well be right Donna that showing a bit more brainpower in regards to separation of recyclables is an issue but that was not what I responded to in the first instance.

I CAN only hold my tongue for so long but the Jay Nauss letter (Free Times, 1 October) was the straw that broke the camel’s back. How dare he insinuate that feminism is the cause for domestic violence!

Mr Nauss would prefer it if all women were in the kitchen keeping their mouths closed and serving their man instead of doing imprudent acts like advocating for gender equality. His victim blaming knows no bounds!

Grand opening of Kings

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE grand opening of the new and improved Kings Theatre at Warwick RSL will be on Saturday 10 October.

Master of Ceremonies and two-time Gold Logie winner Denise Drysdale will keep the crowd on their toes while Frankie J Holden and Wilbur Wilde will provide the entertainment.

There will be a two-course meal and drinks included in the ticketed price to go along with the full night of entertainment.

The concept took over five years to realise, with work being completed on the theatre over the past nine months. The new theatre has the potential to fit over 300 people.

Club secretary manager Jo Schwenke said it would be for the community.

“Our ultimate aim was to provide a venue that can be flexible and adaptable to whatever needs the community have,” she said.

“I love it. I wanted people to know they were in Kings from the outside but not know they’re in Warwick from the inside.

“I think it will be the premier function venue in Warwick.”

tertainers, the official opening will be on Saturday with artists booked at the venue through to June next year.

Administration manager David Burgess said there would be a range of entertainment in the future.

“In December, we’ll be having a sportsman night to raise funds for Warwick junior rugby league with Steve Menzies and Bryan Fletcher,” he said.

“A lot of people have asked to get Jimmy Barnes in here, but our capacity might not handle it.

“We want to try and get anyone with a name, we don’t really mind.”

They both said that comedy had proven to be popular at the venue and that they would be steering away from cover bands in the hope to attract original acts.

“If they’re coming to the Darling Downs, we’d like them to come here,” Jo said.

The theatre will be available for functions, meetings and conferences with the hire price including most of the costs.

They are expecting over 100 people to attend the opening on Saturday with some tickets still available. You can purchase tickets by visiting the club or by calling the RSL on 4661 1229.

Rose Festival is blooming again THE 53rd Annual Rose Festival at St Mark’s Parish Hall on Grafton Street is on Friday 9 October.

Experienced and new rose growers are invited to exhibit their blooms in five competition categories. Newcomers or inexperienced growers can also enter a Novice Category which is designed for those who have never been awarded a prize in any of the previous 52 Rose Festivals.

The $6 entry cost includes a lucky door prize ticket, musical entertainment from Sue Needer and Laraine Stanley, savoury and sweet treats for afternoon tea and viewing of the display of roses.

Minister for Health Sussan Ley said this year’s Mental Health Week theme was mental health begins with me, and encouraged all Australians to take part.

“Mental Health Week is held annually to raise awareness of mental health in the community, reduce the stigma associated with mental ill-health, and most importantly, to encourage help-seeking behaviour,” Ms Ley said.

The largest national survey of youth mental health was released earlier this year, and it highlighted concerns around teenage depression, self-harm and suicide.

The ‘Second Australian Child and Adolescent survey of Mental Health and Well-Being’ found one in seven children and young people experienced a mental disorder in the previous 12 months - the equivalent of 560,000 young Australians.

Mayor Peter Petty gave the opening address at the event where he spoke of his fondness for the region.

The big winner from the night was Bald Rock Beef Jerky with three awards.

Award, Excellence in Innovation, Excellence in Agribusiness and came as a runner-up to Business of the Year, won

by Tripple C Investments who also took down the Excellence in Tourism award.

Rural Links Trans–Pacific Partnership is finalised IT HAS been announced that the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) has been settled, opening up additional export opportunities across the country.

Australian red meat and livestock sectors are expected to benefit with tariff levies slashed across the board.

Under the TPP, tariffs levied on Australian beef entering Japan will be further reduced with the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA).

The tariff on both frozen and chilled beef will fall to 9 per cent over 15 years. There will also be a global beef safeguard provision with the trading.

Processed red meat import tariffs applied by Japan, which currently range from 6-50 per cent, will be eliminated within 15 years.

In Canada, the current 35,000 tonne beef quota (0 per cent in-quota tariff) will remain, however, the above quota tariff of 26.5 per cent will be phased out. Additionally, the 2.5 per cent tariff on Australian sheep meat will be eliminated on entry into force (EIF).

For Australia’s trade to Mexico, the current 20-25 per cent beef tariff will be eliminated within 10 years.

In Peru, which represents a new market opportunity for Australian red meat, the 17 per cent beef tariff will be phased out and the 9 per cent sheep meat and goat meat tariffs will be eliminated on EIF. Chairs of the Australian red meat and livestock industry peak councils said the arrangements would ensure Australia remained competitive in

the global market.

“TPP members account for about 52 per cent of Australia’s beef, sheep meat and offal trade and the existing import tariffs applicable to Australia’s exports destined for TPP markets represent an annual tax on the supply chain of around $1 billion. Exports boost in cattle between Australia and Indonesia underpins affordable food security and prices in Indonesia, and provides security for Australian cattle exporters.

“It is pleasing to see a return to the volume industry would have expected to trade in this quarter, and I welcome Indonesia’s intent to import more of our quality livestock.”

Fears were raised in the Quarter 3 period when Indonesia announced they would be cutting Australian imports to 50,000. That announcement came on the back of the 250,000 in Quarter 2 this year.

Minister Joyce said they will continue to work with the Indonesian Government.

“While this is a welcome announcement, the Australian Government will continue to work with the Indonesian Government toward a more sustainable system of permit delivery - for instance, an annual announcement of import volume and timely issuance of permits rather than the current quarterly system, would allow for more certainty for our producers and Indonesian importers in making business planning decisions,” he said.

“The Australian Government is strongly committed to the livestock export trade and will continue to support the industry while ensuring that our respectful and mutually beneficial bilateral trade relationship with Indonesia is maintained.”

Cows answering the call

By DANE LILLINGSTONE RESEARCHERS have discovered that cows may be trained to respond to sound.

The revelation would open up the possibility of teaching cows to come to the dairy in response to a particular call making farmers’ jobs much easier.

FutureDairy researchers made the discovery during their ‘cow calling’ study, in which student Alexandra Green designed a maze in a paddock using electric fencing and copying the same methods that are used with mice and rats. The T-shaped maze had feed bins at

both sides of the T. The study lasted three weeks, using six dairy heifers.

“We used the Pavlov’s dog principle to teach the cows to associate the sound with a feed reward,” Alexandra said.

“Initially we played a sound when the heifers put their head in a feed bin. Eventually we put the sound only with the feed bin that had feed in it. We started playing the sound as soon as each cow entered the maze to see if we could teach them to follow the noise instead of going to the side they preferred.”

Alexandra said the heifers were quick to pick up on what

was happening.

“Initially the cows guessed their way through the maze but they quickly started to turn their heads to where the sound was; they would really think about it,” she said.

“One of the heifers was hilarious. She got every single test correct from day two onwards. She’d kick up her heels in what looked like sheer delight as though she knew she’d chosen the right way!”

Four of the six heifers got a perfect score four times a day for four days in a row. The other two got it right 75 per cent of the time.

SOUTHERN Downs farmers can breathe a sigh of relief with Indonesia to boost Australian cattle imports.

After going back and forth for the last few months, Indonesia has announced they will increase import permits for Australian cattle to 200,000 head for Quarter 4 this year.

Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources Barnaby Joyce welcomed the decision.

“Australia’s live export trade with Indonesia is a valuable trade that contributes significantly not only to the economies of both nations but also to the well-being and livelihoods of people in both nations,” Mr Joyce said.

What’s On Fun time to ‘think pink’ LET the fun begin - with the 10th annual Killarney Pink Ribbon Brunch on this Sunday at the Killarney Recreation Club.

Doors will open at 9am and the day will feature raffles, auctions, lucky door prizes and a jumble stall and a lot of fun.

Killarney began its Pink Ribbon fund-raising in 2006 with a small gathering of 30 people enjoying brunch and raising $310.

The following years saw a large increase in both participation and funds raised.

With support from many business houses in

Killarney, Warwick, Toowoomba and on the Gold Coast, as well as individuals from near and far, the event has now become an important part of the local social calendar.

Over the years, the Killarney community has donated (through the brunch) more than $150,000 to cancer research.

Through the Queensland Cancer Council, Dr Neil Wetzig was awarded the 2008-'09 external research grant named the “Killarney Community Cancer Research Grant” in honour of the Killarney community and their commitment to the fund-raising cause.

Two years ago the brunch event became morn-

ing tea to allow the volunteers in the kitchen to enjoy the social side of the morning - which has been varied and interesting during the years.

However last year they reverted back to the brunch due to popular demand and the silent auction was replaced by local auctioneers with prizes donated by business houses throughout the region.

Auction items this year include a painting donated by Back To Health Chiropractic, a Weber BBQ (Nowlan Stock and Station Agent), knife

block and pink knife (Killarney Butchery) and a signed Broncos jersey - courtesy of Wayne Bennett.

The event has been organised by Margaret Grayson and Tania Lamb with support from their friends and families and the wider community.

You’ll never forget the best grand final - ever!

By CASEY O'CONNOR TOO often grand final games that are full of pre-game hype fail to deliver, but on Sunday the Cowboys and Broncos turned on a game for the ages.

Recognised by fans and pundits as the “best ever grand final”- the only downside - there had to be a winner.

The adage that defence wins premierships looked to be working for the Broncos for 79 minutes and 59 seconds before a magic Michael Morgan flick pass and JT’s field goal delivered North Queensland the trophy - and gutted the Broncos.

A decision made months ago to purchase GF tickets turned out to be one of the best sporting decisions I’ve ever made.

I will be able to forever say, “I was there in 2015 for 'that' game”.

For Cowboys' fans it has been a long ride. North Queensland has watched and waited patiently since the exciting birth of the Cowboys; stuck by them through the early trials and tribulations of the club and their involvement in the drama of the Super League war.

During those first tentative steps in the NRL dedicated fans stuck by them despite lacklustre performances.

Ten years ago, much was made of the recruitment of a young kid, Johnathan Thurston, who showed plenty of talent but was pigeonholed by many as a bit of a wild child.

Like a young child prodigy the club made its grand final debut that year only to see a Benji Marshall flick pass shatter the dream.

There were those troublesome teenage years as the Cowboys struggled to deliver the wins fans and coaches expected.

Rarely a club to appear in the headlines for the wrong reasons, their end of year report card often read “Could have done better if

they applied themselves.”

There have been bitter - and much publicised - life lessons delivered in final series in recent years where poor decisions by officials caused much pain.

As the club’s main man JT grew in stature, Paul Green took the reins as head coach and demanded the consistency expected of a club on the edge of adulthood.

On Sunday JT and 16 others on the field, a host more who have played during the season and a dedicated coaching staff, delivered the club and the most dedicated fans in the competition the best 21st birthday present - the 2015 Premiership.

Like a well-scripted drama, commeth the hour commeth the man Johnathan Thurston delivered 'that field goal' after Michael Morgan snatched his own piece of grand final history with 'that flick pass.'

At 21, the Cowboys have come of age - they have their grand final trophy and a captain who has done it all.

Finally the planets aligned and the club that has always promised greatness delivered and following the script. JT added Clive Churchill Medal to his growing list of achievements.

They will be forever part of rugby league folklore after delivering along with their Queensland brothers, the Broncos, the greatest grand final ever.

The Broncos, captain Justin Hodges and master coach Wayne Bennett had their fingernails on yet another premiership, but the fairytale ending was not destined to be theirs.

Their performance in 2015 must be rated a 9.

Few expected them to fire in Bennett’s first year back.

Their disappointment was raw and real at the end of the game and will take time to overcome.

Bennett will ensure they get over

the scars but remember the pain of defeat as they focus on next year's season.

Expect to see them in GF contention in 2016.

2015 - Looking back: Roosters - Another Minor Permiership but again fell at the penultimate hurdle. Losing key players Tuivasa-Sheck and James Maloney - have the job ahead of them in 2016 but have unfinished business.

Storm - A season of highs and lows. Proved many pre-season doubters wrong. Eleven games decided by single-digit margins. Five of their 10 losses by four points or less. The Big Three, although now 30+ will be back together.

The emergence of Cameron Munster and a plethora of young talent indicate Melbourne is in good hands. Expect another traditional Bellamy style season - they’ll be there again late in September.

Sharks - Came from the cellar to challenge for a chance at the big prize. Michael Gordon, the only major departure but have recruited halves Maloney and Townsend.

Nothing less than a top four finish for Paul Gallen’s final season with the club. Underrated young backs, tough as nails forward pack, classy playmakers - perhaps that elusive premiership in 2016?

Bulldogs - Season 2015 - No Hodkinson, no ball, poor finish.

No new recruits in 2016. No new signings - a new Hasler blueprint?

Too good to dismiss but may be a work in progress.

Rabbitohs - Premiership hangover lasted all season (lessons here for Cowboys). Big guns failed to fire.

Need GI, need fit and healthy losing several players including Isaac Luke. 2016 might be a tough season to be a Bunny.

Dragons - Making the finals counts as a successful season for

the Dragons. McGregor instilled a defensive work ethic that is often the hallmark of a premiershipwinning outfit - must find the attacking game to match. Dragons in waiting Kurt Mann, Siliva Havili and Mose Masoe. Top eight in 2016.

Manly - Fans still coming to terms with missing the eight. 2015 season of turmoil. Manly venture into the great unknown in 2016.

No Keiran Foran and a new coach Trent Barrett. Back in the eight perhaps.

Raiders - Disappointing 2015, another bottom half of the table finish. Rebuilding year done. Success must now be delivered by Ricky Stuart and the team. Blake Austen a revelation for this team.

Panthers - Season decimated by injury. A kinder run on the injury front in 2016 will see them live up to their potential.

Eels - Made snatching defeat from the jaws of victory an art form.

Plenty went wrong in 2015 but some signs of hope. New blood in 2016 may herald a turnaround.

Warriors - Deja vu - Another 26 rounds, another mid-season burst, another slow and painful fall from finals qualification. Devastating injury to Shaun Johnstone. Clever recruiting for 2016 - high expectations.

Titans - Season began in turmoil and spiralled out of control. Roster a work in progress. No DCE now relying on youngsters. Might turn out to be the best thing for this club.

Tigers - Started brightly, fell in a hole. Farrah drama continues.

Club of discontent. Where to next year - who knows?

Knights - Facing life after Kurt Gidley - new coach - new direction - only way is up in 2016.

So that is it for another season only how many more weeks until we can do it all again?

Greatest Grand Final ever The

THERE are simply no adequate words to describe the 2015 NRL Grand Final. It is being touted as the “greatest ever” and you will get no arguments from me. I have been to most of the State of Origin games, many Test matches and my share of Grand Finals, but never have I witnessed anything near to last Sunday’s game. The atmosphere was amazing. For Queenslanders, the first win came when the Ipswich Jets took out the State League Championship with a win over Newcastle.

Jimmy Barnes and Cold Chisel set the scene for the game, rocking the arena and getting the adrenalin pumping.

There was a sea of blue and gold and Maroon and gold and plenty like myself who just really couldn’t decide or buy a T-shirt and opted for basic “Queensland Maroon”.

The game seemed to be played at an amazing pace and half time had come and gone in the blink of an eye. The Bronco in me thought things were heading for a Bronco’s premiership at half time. Three quarters of the way through the game and then with 60 seconds on the clock, I was ready to celebrate their win. The image that will stay with me forever was the sound of the fulltime siren as Morgan flicked that amazing pass to Kyle Feldt and he planted the ball. It was almost fitting that JT’s conversion should hit the upright and bounce away to send the game into extra time because no-one really wanted this game to finish. Not one person had moved from their seats as the clock wound down. The tension was palatable, and I think everyone in the stadium shared Ben Hunt’s anguish at the kick off.

The result almost inevitable - when JT finally got a clear shot, the stadium erupted.

It was truly a GF for the ages. It had it all, but what impressed most was the sportsmanship shown after the game. Thurston was quick to offer his retiring mate Justin Hodges a hug and a word.

Hodges could have been forgiven for thinking he had a fingernail on his own fairy tale and although he must have been bitterly disappointed was the first to Hunt to console him.

Hodges then went to each of his players urging them to keep their heads up- it was a moment that will define him as one of the great captains in my opinion.

As for Thurston, well I like many am sure that he walks on water in his spare time. He is a footballing genius the likes of which we see only rarely, but he is also a great leader and a wonderful ambassador for the game. He has grown up, stood up and delivered all of North Queensland the premiership they so richly deserve.

And more than anything, I was reminded on Sunday that NSW are going to have a dam hard job to beat Queensland judging by the quality of the football and players we saw on both sides. The old adage - football was the great winner and I am just grateful I was there for the 2015 Grand final.

- Casey HAWKS DOMINATE THE SKIES OVER AFL THE Hawks physically and mentally did the Eagles over, leading at every change and running out comfortable 46-point winners. In essence, they had the game in their keeping after the end of the first quarter and those West Coast fans who had trekked across the Nullarbor must have had a real sense of foreboding.

On one of those rare Melbourne days which was better suited to building sandcastles than playing football, it was the Eagles who wilted.

Early in the second half, they looked fragile and attacking forwards appeared missing in action.

The Norm Smith Medal for best afield was awarded to Cyril Rioli, though he could have raffled it among any number of team-mates.

NO doubting who this group were supporting in Sunday’s grand final. All the way from Tully and Townsville in cow suits.

Rioli it seemed fulfilled his destiny with the win. The champion player joins his father’s brother Maurice Rioli and Mother’s brother Michael Long as Norm Smith medallists. Not bad for kids from the Tiwi Islands.

While Hawks fans continue to celebrate, there are some in the AFL who are concerned by the domination of the Hawks pointing the finger towards the expansion of the game as the cause of the growing divide between the haves and have nots. I am sure things will even themselves out

as they normally do in these cases. You only need look to the golden years of the Brisbane Lions and their current situation to know that what goes round comes round.

For the Hawks, it is their time to shine. For the AFL they should have begun planning their 2016 GF entertainment about 3.00pm Saturday in an effort to finally get it right next year.

BATTLE OF THE SEXES THE Red Rooster Rumble was held on the front nine last week. It came down to a battle of the

sexes as Don Warrener got the better of his partner Joely Singleton. Don finished with 23 points just in advance of Joely 22 points in the nine hole competition. In a couple of weeks, the pair will team with Charlie and Kath Morrison to compete in the regional final of the Holden Scramble at Ocean Shore GC in northern NSW. In Friday’s RRR run down, Mal Crawford 21 and Col Smith 19 took the balls. Don Warrener also cleaned up the Red Rooster hot chook vouchers for the pins at five and seven.

Local Sport MONTHLY MEDALS DECIDED THE Warwick Real Estate sponsored monthly medal was held last Saturday with trophies in two divisions. Doug Rickert won Division One (handicaps under 15) with a score of 66 nett.

Runner-up in this division was John Pearson with a nett 68. Junior member Rhys Farrell (playing off 16) took out the Division Two trophy with a nett 62. Rhys has been upping the ante lately and is in a real purple patch of form lately, let’s hope it continues. Gordon Kerr was the runner-up in Division Two scoring nett 63. Best gross winner with 75 was Greg Sellick and the best junior gross was Declan Murphy with 80.

In the run down, balls were won by Gary Hankison (66), G. Catchpole (a visitor from Nanango GC), Eddy Kemp and A McKinlay (67), John Brack, Don Maher and Williams (68). Nearest to the pins went to Doug Rickert (5), Simon Macdonald (7), Greg Sellick (9), Peter Collett (11), Mick Payne (3) and Eddy Kemp (16).

NOT OCTOBERFEST GOLF-FEST OCTOBER is definitely golf month in Warwick beginning this Sunday (11 October) with the Cowboys annual golf day. It is a four ball Ambrose competition with a shotgun start at 11am.

Register and pick up your card at least an hour before (or the day before), to ensure tee off is on time.

October 17 is a single stableford sponsored by B&K Motors.

The Westpac Warwick Invitational golf day is scheduled for Friday 16 October with a 10am start. This is a fund-raiser for Warwick Golf Club and includes lunch, golf, and drinks until the end of play. Cost is $100pp, or $70pp for non-drinkers (designated driver).

The fun doesn’t end there - on Sunday 31 October, Big W is holding its charity golf day. It will be a 10am shotgun four ball Ambrose, so get your name in quickly or you’ll miss out and just have to buy raffle tickets.

ENGLAND PUT TO SWORD THE Wallabies spoiled the England World Cup party when they upstaged the Poms at Twickenham last Saturday. It added just another layer to a wonderful weekend cross code football. Wallabies fans who set their alarms early Sunday morning were rewarded for their efforts as the Australians dominated across the park answering the trash talking Poms in the most appropriate manner as England became the first host nation to be dumped out of the Rugby World Cup at the pool stage defeated emphatically 33-13.

The Wallabies now have the attention of all nations and have climbed to second in the world rankings and for many have moved into favouritism to win the tournament. But let’s not count out chickens just yet.

Under Michael Cheika’s guidance, the Wobblies look to have fixed their scrum. They have some competitive set pieces, and we they have never been lacking talented backs. David Pocock is fast stamping himself as the best breakdown forward in the competition and Bernard Foley on Sunday showed he handles the big occasions with apparent ease.

The Wallabies now take on Wales, however they will be doing it without vice-captain Michael Hooper, who has been slapped with a oneweek ban after being cited in Sunday’s game.

(Sunday morning AEDT). He will leave a big hole in the starting line-up, but will be back in action for the quarter final. Hooper’s pleaded guilty to foul play and charging into a ruck without using his arms. His pleading guilty reduced his penalty to just one game.

The suspension rules him out of the clash against Wales at Twickenham on Sunday’s game.

HITTING THEM WELL DICK Hilton was hitting the ball well last Sunday, nailing a win at Sporters in Stanthorpe last Sunday. Hilton outscored runner-up Rowan Anderson. Run-downs went to Rod Pettiford and Kev Rowling. Kev also had the Best Gross and Buster Pettiford the pin-shot on the third. The Pro Pin was snapped up by Angelo Maugeri. The lucky meat tray winners were Owen McPaul and Clarky.

DOWN TO THE WIRE FOR CHAPMAN IT WAS all down to a countback to determine the winner of the Monthly Medal competition played last Saturday in Stanthorpe. In the end, it was Ricky Chapman who narrowly edged out Ian Harvey for a win after both players returned nett 66. Chapman becomes the last to qualify for the Medal of Medallists which will be played in November and involves all medal winners during the past 12 months.

Best gross of the day of 80 went to Dylan Barraclough and Ian Harvey with Ian also recording least putts of 25 for the round.

In the Ladies event, Lyn Ludlow returned to the winner’s circle with a winning score of nett 70, just ahead of Madeline Jarman, nett 71.

The Captain’s match play has now reached the final round. It will be a Central affair with parts taking on sales as Mark Mark McCosker and Rob Reeves go head to head after winning their respective semi-final games by the closest of margins. In the meantime, this Saturday is the fundraising day for Breast Cancer research sponsored

by Heritage Bank. The game will be a single stableford with a raffle after the event. Proceeds for day will be donated to this worthy cause. A time sheet has been posted at the clubhouse and tee off is a shot gun start at 11.45am.

Due to the long weekend and a much-anticipated Cowboys GF win, it was very much an ad hoc affair at the Inglewood SSAA lat weekend.
