DEPUTY Mayor Ross Bartley has opened up on his views on the current direction of the Southern Downs Regional Council, declaring a change is needed.

“On the 19th of March hopefully we will a have a better style of council. We need a better style,” he said.

In recent general council meetings, Cr Bartley has been a vocal supporter against council’s lease policy along with Councillors Vic Pennisi and Jamie Mackenzie.

The three of them were the only ones who voted against deferring council’s controversial lease policy in the September meeting, the three councillors were also the same ones who voted against deferring it in the August meeting.

They were also the only three councillors that voted for a special council meeting with GrainX staff regarding operations in Allora in the August meeting.

Cr Bartley believes that a solution to the council’s lease policy should have already been reached.

“We’ve had this information for two months.

How much longer do we need this to go on?” he said at the meeting.

“We seem to have targeted the seniors. I’m happy for them not be charged anything. To hit them with $750 a year, I think is ridiculous.”

In a wide-ranging interview with the Southern Free Times, Cr Bartley stressed the need for an openly communicative local council and one that worked hard to engage in relationships with State Government and open more opportunities for funding.

“How often do state politicians come out here?” he said.

“We need to build better relationships with State Government and politicians.”

When the topic shifted to officers of council, he also stressed the need for CEOs to be uninvolved in the political scale.

Budget process gets transparency

By DANE LILLINGSTONE MANY may see it as a case of too little too late, but the council general meeting has confirmed that next year’s budget will involve a much higher level of transparency with the introduction of active community involvement.

However the decision was cut short of being made permanent, with a review to occur at the conclusion of the 2016-'17 budget process.

It was agreed that a trial would take place next year, with a number of initiatives to be introduced to increase transparency between council and the Southern Downs community during the budget process.

was supportive, as long as it was followed by a review.

“I’m supportive of trialling it with a review at the end of the budget period,” he said.

Councillor Jamie Mackenzie said the move brought Southern Downs Regional Council into line with other interstate councils which had already utilised a similar system.

“I am all for a budget preparation that involves meaningful public consultation and a more transparent process,” he said.

“The proposed change is something from New South Wales legislation, but nothing stops us in Queensland from consulting with the public.”

Mayor Peter Blundell said it would open further engagement with the community, but wouldn’t make the process any easier.

The moves will come into place next year.

“Obviously this doesn’t take away the tough decisions that sometimes need to be made in bringing down a workable budget, but at least it gives the community a greater level of involvement in the process than ever before,” he said.

By DANE LILLINGSTONE POLICE are investigating a frightening recent incident in Braeside where a man was stopped by someone allegedly pretending to be a police officer.

Around 7.50am a man driving on the New England Highway was stopped by a dark blue Ford Falcon sedan that used flashing blue and red lights on its dashboard.

The driver pulled over and the man approached him and asked for his particulars. However the perceptive driver suspected the man wasn’t a police officer and drove away.

Dam this debate

WHAT started as a discussion around a $10,000 contribution at Southern Downs Regional Council turned into a debate about the fate of Emu Swamp Dam. The council general meeting was considering a grant of $10,000 for the Emu Swamp Irrigators (ESI) as a way of jointly owning the business plan that is currently being completed by consulting firm Jacobs.

ESI has put up their own $55,000 for the business plan and the $10,000 was part of an invitation to include the council and the Project Control Group in the process. $20,000 has already been allocated in this year’s budget for the dam.

It was stated in the meeting that since 1980 in excess of $3.5 million has been spent by Stanthorpe Shire Council and now Southern Downs Regional Council on investigations, studies and reports by consultants and specialist firms in relation to Emu Swamp Dam with some suggesting the total amount spent to

Debate broke out among the councillors on whether Emu Swamp was still viable.

Mayor Peter Blundell asked fellow councillors if it was worth it.

“Having contributed that amount of money, it’s hard to walk away,” he said.

“Is it good value water, is it the best value water or not? We are continually required to put more funds in this project.”

Councillor Neil Meiklejohn agreed with the mayor.

“I’m struggling to see the value in this. Is it financially viable or not?” he said.

Councillor Jamie Mackenzie said they were looking at three options - walking away and claiming it a waste of money, looking for an alternative or allocating the $10,000 in the hope that the final business case result will result in Federal Government funding.

Councillor Vic Pennisi said he would remove himself from the final council vote on the $10,000 but warned that something would have to happen.

“This work, at some stage, has to happen,” he said.

“To be financially viable, we need assistance from the government. This report will see if we have that support.”

Deputy mayor Ross Bartley said it was a necessary process.

“To wipe $3.9 million off the slate of ratepayer’s money? I can’t do that,” he said.

“If you want growth in your community, you need water.”

“I sat there at that Warwick Shire Council meeting when we had to debate whether to truck water to Stanthorpe Shire Council. It made national news on Channel 7 - town without water.

“If it means spending a further $10,000 to further it, so be it.”

In the end the vote went 4-3 in favour of the $10,000 allocation with Cr Pennisi leaving the room for the vote.

The investigations into Emu Swamp Dam will continue with a meeting between Cr Blundell, selected councillors and Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce on what Federal funding will be available for water in the Southern Downs in the future.

Community will join GrainX committee

By DANE LILLINGSTONE RESIDENTS of Allora will now at least have a pathway of communication over GrainX operations in the town, with council agreeing to set up a consultative committee.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been agreed upon between council and GrainX. The MOU will see the establishment of a committee to develop a relationship between all stakeholders and work on the current issues in Allora.

Mayor Peter Blundell and Councillor Neil Meiklejohn have been appointed to the committee that will join two GrainX representatives and two local Allora residents to meet every two months to review the progress and monitor concerns. It will be active for 12 months.

Expressions of interest will be sought by council for two local Allora residents to join the consultative committee.

The MOU will require monthly reports to be submitted to council in relation to daily operations at the site and will contain volumes of water used, volumes of grain and traffic volumes.

However it is only the first step in creating a flow of communication between the town and the company.

Local Allora resident Sandy Manson has lived at her current address for almost three years and is across the road from GrainX. She has been continually frustrated with communication flows in the past and does not believe there is going to be much of a difference.

“I feel like we’re being appeased.

I ring council when I get really get cranky, when I see disgusting dust coming towards us. I’ve got to complain but they don’t care,” she said.

“They say we know how you feel, we’ll let you know in a week or so what’s going on. Nothing changes.”

“In order for this to occur, a permit to occupy from the Department of Natural Resources is required, along with development approval from council and these processes are underway.”

Council has also agreed to allow GrainX access to the disused Allora water bore.

GrainX says the water will be used for dust suppression and misting. They are going to be provided 80 kilolitres per day at 87 cents per kilolitre, although that number may vary.

Snowflakes on way

By DANE LILLINGSTONE STANTHORPE won’t have to wait another 30 years for snow with the announcement that Snowflakes in Stanthorpe will be on in early July next year.

Stanthorpe Agricultural Society president Andy Williams announced at a Chamber of Commerce meeting that the event would be bigger and better in 2016.

“I would like to officially announce that Stanthorpe will definitely have snow in early July 2016,” Mr Williams said.

“The original concept from 2013 will be further developed and will see events rolled out over three days, at locations such as, but not limited to the Stanthorpe showgrounds, the main street, and along the banks of Quart Pot Creek.”

The announcement was made with the Stanthorpe Agricultural Society, Stanthorpe Chamber of Commerce, Destination Southern Downs and sponsors already on board.

Snow will be back in Stanthorpe next year.

“This has the potential to be a winter festival

Mr Williams said it had the potential to put Stanthorpe on the map.

By DANE LILLINGSTONE A SURVEY has been set up for Southern Downs residents to nominate their preferred location for the northern 2016 Australia Day celebrations.

Following a discussion in the council's general meeting, Southern Downs Regional Council is seeking feedback on next year’s location of festivities.

In recent times Glengallan Homestead has played host to Australia Day festivities, but concerns were raised in the meeting about its accessibility for some sectors of the community.

Deputy Mayor Ross Bartley stated his concern for the current venue.

“People with impediments find

it hard at Glengallan to get around,” he said.

“I want everyone to have the right to attend.”

It was eventually agreed that a period of public consultation would occur.

Mayor Peter Blundell said a survey had now been set up with Warwick added as a potential location.

He said last year’s event at Glengallan was a success.

“Attendance at the event was estimated at 2000, and the feedback received on the choice of venue and the partnership with Glengallan was overwhelmingly positive; although there were a few concerns raised about accessibility to the venue,” he said.

“As a result, council decided to

seek community feedback about the preferred location; whether that be Warwick, Glengallan Homestead with some provision of public transport, or perhaps another location entirely.”

A survey has been set up and is now accessible online at www. surveymonkey.com/r/57QRHT6. It can also be viewed through links on council’s website www.sdrc.qld. gov.au and their Facebook page.

Cr Blundell said that although the survey would only be available online, there would still be opportunities to vote.

In brief House fire at Glen Aplin THREE people were taken to hospital after a fire at a home on the New England Highway at Glen Aplin.

On Monday 28 September, emergency services were called to a home on the highway around 7.30pm with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services extinguishing the blaze that had been contained to one room.

The three people were taken to the hospital, where it is believed they were treated for smoke inhalation.

Rolled car on range THREE people were lucky to escape unscathed after a vehicle rollover on Thursday, 24 September.

The driver lost control near the bottom of Cunningham’s Gap on Thursday morning, when a back tyre lost grip, sending the vehicle out of control before flipping three times on the side of the road.

One of the passengers was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital with head injuries and whiplash, but was cleared and released later the same day.

Double the limit A 42-YEAR-OLD Gold Coast man blew over twice the blood alcohol limit just after midnight on Friday in Warwick.

On 26 September at around 12.30am the man was stopped for a random breath test, where he blew .106.

The man was subsequently charged and will face Warwick Magistrates' Court at a later date.

Man comes off motorbike A 43-YEAR-OLD man was left seriously injured after coming off his motorbike on Emu Swamp Road at Glen Aplin on Sunday.

The man is said to have been travelling with a group of motorcyclists before losing control coming around a corner at around 12:20pm on Sunday.

He was taken to Stanthorpe Hospital with serious injuries, before being transferred to Toowoomba Hospital.

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has said 82 per cent of rates were paid by the end of the discount period.

The number was said to be almost the same as the one at the end of the discount period last year.

Discounts for early rate payments finished on Friday, 4 September.

Face up to debt TO THE mayor and councillors, don’t you think it is a bit late to think about being transparent about the terrible debt we are in? I think you are just trying to gather votes so you can keep your cushy jobs, as I don’t believe the unemployment agency would have jobs to pay the same amount of money you receive from ratepayers.

So don’t waste ratepayers' money when you know very well you will not listen to the ratepayer and you always have the last word. I believe the council should be offering a service in which the ratepayer pays their rates and the council looks after the ratepayers' interests, not putting them into debt. I have lived here for 25 years and this is the worst council I have observed.

I have taken the time for many hours to ask people of all types about this issue. I, myself have been separating and recycling for over 30 years.

I research, I walk, I see, I witness the lack of motivation, education and consideration out here in the country!

Chris, a family or share house situation buys and consumes many packaged items, e.g. fast foods, processed foods, packaged foods, packaged nappies, you name it, it’s all in ONE bin and not separated to recycle.

Their rubbish, smelly and uncleaned is spilling over the bin. Chris, nine out of 10 could do better, much better like we are in every other town and city for 30 years. It is thoughtlessness, laziness and ignorance that causes overflowing bins.

Domestic violence PM MALCOLM will enhance his popularity with the female lobby by his recent announcement to combat the upsurge in domestic violence to the tune of $100 million. A lot of innovative measures will be tried to stop the scourge that has seen 63 women murdered this year, and some children as well.

We have to ask why there is so much more domestic violence nowadays than there was a generation ago. I recall the time when it was considered bad form to hit a woman.

Now, we hear of it happening all too often. We hear little of women on man violence but it does happen, however, the current emphasis is on violence against women.

In the last 40 or so years there has been a tremendous growth in feminism, rightly or wrongly, and there is anecdotal evidence that there has been huge funding, especially in America, from tax exempt foundations to advance women’s rights and encourage women to participate in all forms of employment, government service and the military.

Is there a connection between the rise of feminism and today’s upsurge of domestic violence?

This should be investigated by academics and investigative journalists.

It might be politically incorrect to look at this side of the issue, but I believe necessary.

BUSHkids gets grand centre THE official opening of the new BUSHkids centre in Warwick was a resounding success with over a hundred guests and supporters turning out to show support.

Guest speakers, a barbecue and activities all round were on offer as the Wood Street centre officially opened on Friday 25 September.

The massive centre, twice the size of the previous one on Guy Street, features multiple rooms for the various services provided and will them to cater to more children.

Multiple guest speakers told their stories of their involvement with BUSHkids from BUSHkids CEO Carlton Meyn and BUSHkids Council chairman Dr David Bartels, to Warwick local parent Ian Mace, deputy mayor Ross Bartley and Variety Queensland CEO David McDonald.

Mayor Peter Blundell officially opened the centre in what is BUSHkids 80th anniversary year.

John Villiers Trust trustee Darvell Hutchinson came from Melbourne for the opening and spoke of the $500,000 that was donated to the centre. The trust is set up by the late entrepreneur John Villiers. Variety Queensland CEO David McDonald also announced a $10,000 donation for a new playground.

BUSHkids Council chairman Dr David Bartels said the services the centre provides would only get bigger.

“The centre is important because it serves this whole Southern Downs region. It covers a large area right down to Inglewood,” he said.

“Because we have funding from the Federal Government from the Department of Social Services it

means we can actually roll out more services as well and because it’s a larger area within the premises itself and we can also do community programs.

“We’re looking at getting paediatricians and experts and so forth in child health coming and giving talks and lectures to young parents, parents and people with special needs.”

Dr Bartels said that in the future they would look at providing services for children suffering from different forms of abuse and growing diseases like obesity and diabetes.

Speech language pathologist Alison Dowdle said the new centre would allow her and the team to provide more services.

“There will be much more opportunity for better community engagement and getting more services for kids and getting kids through the service,” she said.

“It’s a much, much bigger centre.

We have a shared office space and we have five generic therapy rooms.

“We have a speech pathologist, an occupational therapist, a child psychologist, a family health support worker, and manager of early intervention team.

“We do sessions in the centre but we also do outreach. We outreach to Inglewood, Killarney, Stanthorpe, Allora, Clifton, Maryvale and Yangan.”

Ms Dowdle said the service was easy to use for those who needed it.

“It’s really easy to get a referral.

Parents can self-refer, they don’t need a GP, they just call up and say my child needs help. They go on a waitlist. It’s a free service to the community, the only thing is they pay with their time, doing the homework and being on a waitlist,” she said.

Art gallery welcomes fresh show

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery officially opened their new exhibition on Friday 25 September.

The Borderline Regional Arts Association has presented their biannual exhibition entitled ‘Resonance.’

The exhibition consists of 32 local artists exploring the themes of reflection and reverberation through a variety of media. There is a selection of sculpture, painting, pastel, etching and glasswork pieces in what should provide something for everyone.

Gallery manager Nicola Holly said she had high hopes for the exhibition with good signs at the opening.

“It was a great night with over 110 people in attendance,” she said.

“They’re a group of local artists who stem from Glen Innes to Warwick.

“People in this area always support local artists, it’s great to see. We’ve had high visitor numbers and excellent feedback since it opened last Thursday so I’m hoping it’ll prove to be of

Police remember the fallen Casey’s tips

By DANE LILLINGSTONE LOCAL police officers and special guests have gathered for a special church service to honour police officers who have died in the line of duty.

National Police Remembrance Day was held on Tuesday 29 September, at the Warwick Uniting Church, on Guy Street.

Pastor Jean Reid welcomed police officers, members of Southern Downs Regional Council, other organisations and members of the Southern Downs community to the service.

Chaplain Les Comollatti led the prayers and hymns with Reverend Jenny Potter presenting the principal address.

A number of local police officers spoke at the event with Acting Inspector Jamie Deacon giving the police commissioner’s address.

“It’s important to pause to honour and remember those who have served because no greater sacrifice can be asked,” he said.

“Every day, police officers demonstrate bravery, courage and skills in service.”

He said that 140 police officers had died in the line of duty since 1861.

“Through tragic times we have seen great support from the Queensland community,” he said.

No officers from Australian police jurisdictions were killed in the line of duty since National Police Remembrance Day 2014.

A moment of silence was had for police officers who had died due to non-work related incidents. There was also a collection passed around for Police Legacy which is an independent charitable organisation to help families of sick and deceased police officers.

ing sector in 2015 at the Australian Green Development Forum in Brisbane earlier this month, Master Builders deputy executive director Paul Bidwell said much of new housing stock was currently produced at price points that many people, particularly first home buyers, could not afford.

“Around 90 per cent of home owners buy established homes. Builders face an ongoing battle to shift homebuyers from established to new construction,” Mr Bidwell said.

“The rising cost of land, size and quality of new homes and government regulations are all impacting affordability. Clearly, builders can only control a fraction of the problem.

“The housing sector’s response to date has generally been around improving business effectiveness and different products - smaller houses on smaller lots (in addition to putting pressure on governments to reform the regulatory environment).”

Master Builders believes there is an imperative for the sector to identify new and improved products, processes and systems that will help drive down the cost of building. In its latest productivity report, the OECD predicted that innovation will lift productivity by 62 per cent.

However, recent studies from Queensland University of Technology, the National Housing Supply Council and the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute have confirmed that innovation isn’t the housing sector’s strong suit.

While materials manufacturers are investing in new materials and products, there isn’t a lot of uptake from the housing construction sector.

In addition, research into this issue undertaken

by Master Builders discovered an interesting lack of urgency among builders.

There is a view that off-site manufacturing and modern methods of construction are the next step to increasing affordability and business profitability. But to date, there has been little movement towards these by the industry.

The research suggests that this is not likely in the near future either, despite the long history of discussion concerning the industrialisation of housing production and some experimentation with off-site factory production.

“There are many barriers, not the least of which is the conservative culture of the industry,”

“Changes around construction processes and materials carry plenty of financial risk without strong evidence of cost savings and consumer acceptance.

“For companies, building less than 100 dwellings a year, these alternative construction methods are not viable.

“This equates to more than $25 million annual turnover. The reality is that 85 per cent of licensed building contractors have an allowable annual turnover of less than $600,000. This is the maximum figure - not necessarily actual turnover, which highlights that the building industry predominantly comprises small businesses.”

In a bid to help assist innovation in the industry, Master Builders is keen to work with the State Government to encourage the uptake of new construction materials and methodologies to reduce completion times, drive down costs and help address housing affordability.

“The trick is to get to the smaller builders spread across Queensland. That, in my view, is a tough nut to crack,” Mr Bidwell said.

League champs CELEBRATIONS are on high for the sporting fraternity around Allora this week after local rugby league team the Wattles ‘Warriors’ won back-toback premierships clinching the Toowoomba Rugby League ‘A’ Grade grand final on Sunday.

The Wattles Rugby League Football Club had its beginnings back in 1966 when the Clifton and Allora Rugby League clubs combined to form what was then known as Allora/ Clifton, with the Wattles name attached some years later.

The club’s first president was former Allora footballer and Wattles Patron and Life Member the late Brian Smith.

Brian, along with inaugural senior vice-president Jack Enright and James Gleeson were largely responsible for the formation of the Allora-Clifton club.

The club has always played in their traditional green and gold colours, their jerseys in their initial year were green with gold numbers. The Allora-Clifton club’s first matches

were pre-season trials against Warwick club Collegians on Sunday 6 March, 1966. AlloraClifton only played one season in the Warwick District competition, before being admitted to the Toowoomba Rugby League in 1967.

In their first year in the TRL the Under 16 side made the grand final but were defeated.

Wattles first premiership was won by an Under 16 team though, defeating All Whites 17-7 in the 1968 grand final.

The 1968 season also saw the Allora-Clifton club gain their first State representative when Les Lane was selected for Queensland. Allora-Clifton became Wattles in 1969 after a competition organised by Mal Eiby to give the club a name.

The club has tasted much success in its 50-year history.

Wattles won their first A Grade premiership in 1970, defeating Valleys by 20- 17. Wattles have also won Toowoomba Rugby League premierships in many divisions across the years.

Wattles second A Grade premiership success occurred in 1997. They were coached by John McLuskey and captained

by Steve Miles. Their third A Grade premiership silverware came their way just last year when they upset the Gatton Hawks 36-12 at Toowoomba’s Clive Berghofer Stadium, where the latest grand finals was won.

The club boasts five Internationals in the Platz brothers Greg and Lew, Rohan Hancock and former Brisbane Broncos front rower Shane Webcke.

Robert Keleli was selected for the Papua New Guinea National side to play Australia from Wattles club ranks in 2004.

Wattles have also had numerous players rise from their ranks to play with NRL clubs including Lew Platz, Shane Webcke, Kirk Reynoldson, Phil Morwood, Tony Duggan, Travis Burns, Robbie Tew, Jordan Atkins, Grant Rix, and Mark Meskell.

Gift to world Rotary theme recognised that the Allora Club would always be small and intimate as a club - one of its defining characteristics.

Jeff encouraged Rotarians to support an Indigenous Health Scholarship Program, established in 2002 in South Australia and since expanded to all states and territories.

The program provides scholarships to assist in the education and training of Indigenous Australian doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. Current recipients of scholarships are studying medicine, nursing, social work, physiotherapy, exercise and sports science, nutrition and dietetics, dentistry, occupational therapy, psychology and health science.

For $2500, Rotary clubs can assist in offering a scholarship, with this monetary amount matched by State and Federal Governments.

Don’t chuck that old bike Recently featured on ABC’s 7:30 report, the Surfers Sunrise Rotary Club on the Gold Coast sent out a container of 275 wheelchairs for disadvantaged kids in Sri Lanka. The wheelchairs are manufactured from old bicycles collected from many places around Queensland.

The design of this wheelchair is the brainchild of Des La Rance of the Surfers Sunrise Rotary Club. When holidaying in Fiji and seeing firsthand the plight of children suffering debilitating

illnesses such as muscular dystrophy, Des came up with the idea of constructing a basic but lowcost wheelchair from old bicycle parts and other customised materials, which could withstand the rugged conditions of an undeveloped third world country.

The Rotary Club of Allora would like to support this project by relieving the community of their old bikes. Over the next month, take the old bike to the Allora Recycling Centre or the Yangan Recycling Centre, and from there bicycles will be trucked to the coast. If you can’t get the bike to the dump, email us on allorarotary@hotmail.com or ring or talk to any of our members. This project will close at the end of October.

THE Rotary Club of Allora recently welcomed the new district governor, Anne Egan, and Jeff Egan, both lawyers from Murwillumbah.

Focusing on mental health COMMUNITY Network of Warwick (CNoW) co-founder Julia Keogh is actively encouraging everyone across the Southern Downs region to value their own mental health during national Mental Health Week from 5 to 10 October.

Julia said CNoW, in partnership with Uniting Care Community, Partners in Recovery, headspace Warwick, Condamine Assist, Lifeline Personal Helpers and Mentors, St Vincent de Paul Cornerstone, Mental Health Professionals Network and the Southern Downs Regional Council, has developed a range of free workshops, all to be held in the CBD of Warwick. “You can sing, drum, cook, flex, make, draw, stretch, learn and be mindful during our week of positive activities, that focus on connecting you into our community,“ she said.

The CNoW team have also partnered with the local Mental Health Professionals Network to host a special Q & A evening, on 7 October at the Town Hall.

A diverse range of mental health practitioners, as well as Mary Woods from Tie Up The Black Dog Committee, will be on hand to answer your questions.

This free event, which starts at 5.30pm at the Warwick Town Hall, is open to everyone in the Southern Downs community and registering is easy through http://www.trybooking.com/JCQH or phoning 0499 074 306.

Julia urged everyone to register and come along for the free wood fired pizzas, thanks to Quattro Stagioni, and stay for the Q & A session .

The night will also launch the Southern Downs Regional Council’s Community Care Card.

The community care card is an initiative funded by the Queensland Government under the

Community Drought Support funding program.

The card was created to provide useful tips to recognise, respond and reach out for help. It also contains local services and help lines for those who need to seek out further support.

The cards will be readily available throughout the whole of the Southern Downs region in businesses and key service locations. It’s a tool the whole community can use when having those difficult conversations with people who are doing it tough.

Julia and the CNoW team are passionate about engaging people within the Southern Downs region to value the mental health of their family, friends, colleagues and most importantly their own mental health.

She encourages everyone to value the mental health of not themselves but also their family through connecting with the community.

Burning issue well covered TO coincide with 2015 World Mental Health Day on 10 October, the ABC will again focus a week of programming across TV, radio and online on mental illness, health and well-being, leading discussion, debate and community awareness on an issue that affects all Australians.

The event will begin on Sunday 4 October and culminate in the Saturday Night Crack Up on 10 October.

In 2014, Mental As... was the biggest cross-platform marketing and programming event the ABC has ever held.

Attracting a TV audience of 5.9 million Australians over the week, with all radio, news and online platforms enjoying high levels of audience engagement, Mental As... raised $1.5 million for mental health research.

Thirteen fellowships were awarded to early career researchers, via the Society for Mental Health Research.

This year’s programming highlights include Saturday Night Crack Up, a huge night of family entertainment and fund-raising once again hosted by Eddie Perfect, and the return of acclaimed documentary series Changing Minds: The Inside Story, this time emphasising the plight of younger patients.

What’s On Time for mess, at church “MESSY Church” is a church growth phenomenon around the world, and it’s coming to Warwick this weekend.

Spokesperson for the local event, to be held at St Mark’s Anglican Church this Sunday, Heather Deardon said it promised to be an interesting experience.

“Messy’ means ‘allowing for noisy and unorthodox events’ - you don’t have to bring a change of clothes!” she said.

“It started in 2004 in the UK, and has grown and spread all around the world and to many denominations as part of the Fresh Expressions movement. In Australia, there have been Messy Churches since 2010 and many churches have been blessed through seeing Messy Church as a form of mission to whole families, not just children.”

She said Messy Church was church for families who might not find other forms of church appealing and who didn't yet belong to a church.

“It includes hands-on creative experiences, a celebration and a meal,” she said.

“It welcomes and provides for all ages.”

While each Messy Church is unique, there are underpinning values that are shared.

“It is church, not a kids’ club or Bible study,” Heather said.

There is a strong emphasis on hospitality, the offer of conversation and drinks to sharing worship and a sitdown meal for all.

“The celebration is an invitation to worship through song, prayers and story. Creativity in many forms is encouraged, nurtured and explored by people of all ages, together.”

Families in Warwick are invited to take part in the Messy Church event at St Mark’s Anglican Church on Sunday 4 October, from 4-6pm.

The church is planning four Messy Church events each year, with another planned for Christmas.

Green has succeeded in melding the team that always promised so much but failed to deliver, into a champion side.

It has not been all roses in the north. The Cowboys dropped their opening three games in spectacular fashion, but dusted themselves off and notched up an impressive 11-game winning streak.

There are champions in the making in both sides Hunt and Milford - Morgan and Granville. Besides them, the old heads of Hodges Parker Boyd and Thaiday facing the imposing Scott Tamou and their forward partners. And then there is the mercurial Thurston, named on Monday night, Dally M winner for a record fourth time.

This is as a game that should have all league fans salivating.

Bookmakers have installed the Cowboys as favourites.

They play an exciting brand of football built on speed and power where attack reigns.

But there is plenty to indicate Brisbane can get the job done. The Broncos are undoubtedly the complete package. The undisputed defensive experts.

Their line rarely cracked from inside the 20m red zone. If and when the Broncos concede points, it is often through a long-range movement and the Cowboys have two of the best exponents in the game - Thurston and Michael Morgan.

Question marks hover over whether the Cowboys defence is up to the test. How bad is Thurston’s groin injury? How bad is Hodges’ back?

For a Queenslander, picking a winner is akin to naming your favourite child. As a long time Broncos fan, I lean towards Brisbane but in my heart I would love to see an NQ win.

For those south of the border it may be a difficult day but my advice is settle in with a cold beverage of choice and embrace your dormant deep inner Maroon. This is your one chance to legitimately support a Queenslander and savour what will be a sensational game.

TWO outstanding games of rugby league last weekend were the ideal entree to this weekend’s main course - the 2015 NRL grand final. The stars aligned to deliver an allQueensland grand final - a first in league history. While fans south of the Queensland border might be disappointed, there is no disputing the two best performing teams will go head to head for 80 minutes or perhaps even longer on Sunday.

In front of a record Suncorp crowd, the Broncos got away to the perfect start when Darius Boyd scored an intercept try in the opening set. It is a moment that will be played on highlight reels for decades. Things did not improve for Roosters fans as the Broncos galloped in with two more quick tries. The Roosters hit back but poor ball handling skills hampered their attempts to rein in the rampaging Broncos. In a game played at break-neck speed, the Broncos led 20-12 at half time. The second half saw an early Roosters try disallowed. The Broncos responded with a combination of Hunt and Milford magic.

Desperate for points, the Roosters resorted to throwing the ball around but their enterprise led to an error which the Broncos converted into points.

When Milford slotted a field goal to give his side a 19-point lead with that many minutes on the clock, Brisbane had booked their place in the grand final with a 31-12 victory.

The win was not without problems. As we go to print Hodges, team mates, fans and opponents nervously await the outcome of Tuesday night’s judiciary hearing. The Brisbane captain must fight a Grade One lifting charge for his tackle on maroon team mate, Aiden Guerra if he is to get the chance of a fairytale finish to his illustrious career.

With the Broncos safely into the big game, attention turned to AAMI Park Saturday night.

As most pundits predicted this game was tight with the lead changing several times in

the first half. Midway through, the second half frustration got the better of Storm player Marika Koroibete who landed a punch on Kyle Feldt’s chin, scoring himself a stint in the sin bin.

While JT orchestrated his troops, Gavin Cooper and Michael Morgan each scored a double as the Cowboys defused the electric Storm crowd. Cam Smith and Cooper Cronk were unable to conjure up any magic to check the brilliance of Thurston as the Cowboys galloped away to a 32 -12 win.

Ten years after their first grand final appearance and after the heart break of some more recent results the NQlanders secured their spot in the biggest game of the year and their place in a history making GF. So who wins on Sunday?

The Cowboys have become everyone’s other favourite team and will have plenty of support south of the border as they take on Bennett’s boys.

The Bennett factor cannot be underestimated. He has taken Brisbane to six grand final appearances and come away with the big prize on each occasion.

In 2010, he also guided the Dragons to a win and in doing so stamped himself as one of the game’s greatest coaches.

Written off by some as too old, too out of touch to be effective, Bennett has left many with egg on their faces as he moulded the club which just scraped into the eight last year into a powerhouse in 2015.

A dose of tough love saw players let go and some receive reminders that playing for the Broncos was a privilege not a right. Bennett forced players to take responsibility for their own actions and it has paid off in spades.

In Cowboy’s territory, Paul Green, a former Shark, Bronco and Cowboy has had a remarkable effect since taking on the reins. His resume may not be as illustrious as Bennett’s, but he has plenty of runs on the board.

It is certainly a very special week to be a Queenslander with the Broncos and Cowboys lining up in the first all Queensland NRL grand final. The trouble for many of us now is which team to support.

The Cowboys are everyone’s other favourite side, so I imagine the sway of support will lean in their favour on Sunday. It surely looks “their time” after heartbreaking decisions and stuff ups have cost them their place in the Big Dance in recent years.

It was fitting to see JT blitz the Dally M Medal field on Monday night and etch his name into the history books.

What a wonderful champion he has become. Once considered by some as a wild child, he has morphed into one of the greatest leaders in the game. The manner in which he conducts himself off and on the field is something younger players should aspire to.

From his off field work with Indigenous kids and the NQ community to the little things like always picking up his kicking tee - respecting the ball boys and giving away his head gear each and every game he has raised the bar on player behaviour. He is of course also a vocal advocate for the players themselves.

It would be fitting for this player with the freakish talent, who league fans have joined on his journey from skinny kid to champion to raise the NRL premiership trophy with Co Captian Matt Scott on Sunday.

Standing in his way is another with a great story - a former Cairns kid also with freakish ability, often misunderstood but who in his final season of rugby league has emerged as a strong and genuine leader of men - Justin Hodges. There were some raised eyebrows when Wayne Bennett named him captain when the coach returned to the Broncos this season. Of course history will show us that to doubt a Bennett decision is to dice with danger or stupidity.

It was great to see common sense and justice prevail earlier in the week when Hodges faced the judiciary. History will also show that things often don’t go that well in that room.

Now that enigmatic former Cairns kid is 80 minutes away from writing his own fairy tale ending to a remarkable career.

This grand final will be a game with plots and sub plots, stories and sidelines aplenty and anyone who doubted an all-Queensland final could pull a sellout crowd seriously underestimated those with maroon blood coursing through their veins.

I am fortunate that someone booked my tickets back in June and like many I have been pinching myself since Saturday night - can’t believe my luck.

Who wins? Can’t pick - the Broncos supporter in me says Benny’s boys - the Nth Qld connection is hoping the Cowboys. Either way we are set to prove to those south of the border Queensland really is the heart and soul of rugby league.

I know there are plenty of other familiar rugby league faces that are heading to Sydney for the game. Guess I might see you there.

Yeeha - Casey BACK TO BACK FOR WATTLES WATTLES Warriors have been the benchmark for the past two TRL seasons and on Sunday at Clive Berghoffer Oval they dominated the grand final game against the Dalby Diehards to claim back-to-back Premierships with an emphatic 5226 victory.

It is the first time Wattles have managed the feat, and it is a milestone fittingly achieved in the club’s 50th Anniversary year.

Pairs winners - Summit Bowlers Kurt Empen and Paul Zamprogno combined to take out the 2015 SDMDBA President's Pairs.

It was a proud moment for the Duggan brothers, Ryan, Luke and Matt who were able to share a rare and special rugby league moment. The trio now have their names etched in Wattles’ history alongside their team mates.

The Warriors went into the game as warm favourites but did not underestimate their opponents who fought hard from fifth spot on the ladder for their tilt at the TRL title.

Wattles were quickly into stride as hooker Mark Gordon opened the scoring for the minor premiers after only two minutes of play.

Aaron Scheid and Joel Koina extended the lead as Wattles posted points at better than one a minute.

Dalby needed a try to stay in the game and James Wreford put them on the board in the 17th minute. The conversion successful, the Diehards trailed 18-6.

In a dominant period of play the inform Brodie Ciesiolka and Brenden Wilson both scored.

Duggan was on song with the boot as Wattles extended their lead to 30-6 heading towards half time.

Marcus Jensen scored for the Diehards on the stroke of half time and successfully converted his own try to send his side to the break, down 30-12.

Trailing by 18 points Dalby needed a good start to the second half but any chance of reeling in the Warriors began slipping away when Ciesiolka crossed for his second minutes into the half.

Harry Fulwood joined the list of try scorers and Ciesolka made it three for the final with a try in the 56th minute. Down 48-12 Dalby hit back with tries to Jensen and Pat Manley but the horse had well and truly bolted. As the clock wound down on the 2015 TRL season Corey Blades joined the Wattles try scoring party. Dalby’s Nathan Champney scored for the Diehards in the final minutes of the high scoring game. Despite the loss it was a brave effort from the Dalby team who went into the game without two of their key players Asher Elemani and Xavier Manley.

It was of little surprise Brodie Ciesiolka was named Man of the Match, winning the John McDonald Medal for his performance capping off a stellar season for the young five eighth and the club.

The Rams have been the dominant team throughout the season, and on Sunday posted a comfortable 32-6 win over the Warwick Cowboys, avenging their somewhat controversial loss in 2014. They took a 16-6 lead to the half time break and kept the Cowboys scoreless in the second half as they

SHOWER NO DAMPENER A LIGHT shower Saturday did little to dampen the powder for the combined Action Pistol and 25 metre bear targets at Inglewood SSAA. Twenty-three competitors took part in the shoot which was held over two days.

Tom Donald was in fine form, rounding up the opposition on Saturday to take out the event ahead of Scott John and Michael Dudgeon. Donald had such a good day out on Saturday that he repeated the dose on Sunday, defeating Ross Jackson and Michael Dudgeon to pick up another minor placing. Fortunately, he was not eligible for the Junior competition and Will Paterson was able to claim a win in that competition. - Nice shooting Tom. After the excitement of the pistols this Sunday it is back to clays. The pistol and rifle sight will be available for practice and / or sighting all day.

Terry Byrnes and Bob Watts claimed the rundowns. Aaron Simmers played very well to win the gross. The pin shot at 12 was won by visiting Evans Heads golfer Fran Dickens. Another visitor Nic Baltas won the pin at the 17th. Ian Anderson just loves the Pro-Pin and won it again.

Jim Mitchell and Aaron Simmers were the lucky winners of the meat trays. Sporters be warned your president Ray Thorn is back on deck next Sunday fresh from his holidays. Tee off on Sunday is at the normal 8am - 8.30am.

TIGHT FINISH IN ‘GARRA AMBROSE IN A very tight finish to the Two Ball Ambrose competition played last Saturday at Wallangarra, only 1/4 points separated the first three teams.

Scott Williams and Damien Moore eventually took the honours narrowly ousting runners-up Kevin and Peter Williams. A split hair away was the pairing of Steven Hampstead and Simon Blair in third spot.

Two pin shots were claimed with Jay Purcell setting up a birdie on nine and Scott Williams at the approach. With his two on nine, Purcell also nabbed the Birdies Nest.

It is October already and time for the Monthly Medal event this Saturday.

EMOTIONAL WIN THERE were tears and cheers as the Toowoomba trained and owned filly Greyt Start blitzed the field in the inaugural Pat O’Shea Plate (1000m) at Clifford Park on Saturday. The race formerly known as the Fitton Hopeful Plate was renamed in honour of former race caller Pat O’Shea who died early in the month.

Both trainer and jockey were emotional following the win. Nolan said after the race that winning the inaugural Pat O’Shea plate was up there with his Weetwood wins and the win of Jumbo Prince in the Toowoomba Guineas earlier this year.

“This is special. As soon as I found out the race was to be named after Pat O’Shea, I really wanted to win it.

“We set her for it and I’m over the moon,” the trainer said.

It was Skye Bogenhuber's first win in the Toowoomba two-year-old feature event and she rates it alongside her multiple premiership, Weetwood, Toowoomba Cup and Fillies and Mares Quality victories.

“I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. “I’ve wanted to win this race for a long time,” Bogen-

huber said at the post-race celebrations.

The leading Toowoomba rider said she was over the moon to win the race now that it was the Pat O’Shea Plate, saying O’Shea was one of her greatest supporters and it was a great thrill.

The immediate plans for the classy filly are in doubt. Trainer Michael Nolan is yet to decide whether to press on with Greyt Start’s campaign or send her for a spell following the impressive win.

TWO CLOSE ENCOUNTERS THE Hoop runners Group played two close games of doubles last week. In perfect conditions, Bill Golding and Elaine Brown paired up to take on Shirley Evans and Val Fancourt in the first game. In a tight game, Brown and Golding broke a 12-all deadlock, scoring the final hoop to win 13-12. The winning combination scored consistently all game without any particularly spectacular shots. Shirley Evans had the top score of eight hoops, and both she and her partner came up with a jump shot each.

ACTION ROLLS ON AT SUMMT AS the parade of caravans rolled into Stanthorpe for the much-anticipated State Rally, preparations were well underway at the Summit Bowls club for a much-anticipated visit from a large contingent of the visitors.

A big group of travelling bowlers spent an enjoyable day on the greens at the Summit which were turned out in magnificent style by Errol Moss and drew plenty of positive comments from the visiting blowers. John Shannon and Gaye Wilmot also ensured the group were very well fed and watered and the club appreciates the efforts of all three of these hard working members.

It was another busy day on the greens on Saturday with the Summit Club hosting the SDMDBA Presidents Pairs. Eight teams from across the district competed.

It was two Summit teams that made it through to the final on Sunday with the team of Rod Newlands and Paul Zamprogno taking on Wayne Thomas and Kurt Empen. In what was a tough game, Newlands and Zamprogno fought hard but in the end skip Wayne Thomas and Kurt Empen were successful in lifting the trophy for 2015.

There were also social bowls played on Saturday Brian Brown and Keith Mungall 20 combined to defeat P. Davis and Graham Rubie.

It is looking like another big weekend of competition at the Summit as the club prepares to host the Summit 2015 Triples Competition this weekend. The competition runs over both Saturday and Sunday and play commences at 9am on Sunday. Coming events: A reminder to all bowlers that the Annual Apple Blossom carnival is fast approaching. Set down for 24 and 25 October, organisers would appreciate team nominations as soon as possible.

BARE THEM FOR RONALD ON Saturday evening, (3 October), from 5pm to 8pm, Warwick East Bowls club will play host to a Ronald McDonald House Charity Barefoot Bowls event. It will be a night of fun for the whole family with everything supplied for you to “Bare your feet for Charity“ and have a go at barefoot bowls. There will also be face painting for the kids, a barbecue sausage sizzle for everyone and all proceeds of the night’s activities will go to Ronald McDonald House.
