Tony to run for mayor

By JOLENE OGLE NOOSA Councillor Tony Wellington has announced he will run for mayor at the March council elections.

In a statement provided to Noosa Today, Cr Wellington said he was not the “usual suspect” for a political career, having spent most

of his working life in the creative industries.

Cr Wellington said he decided to announce his intention to run for mayor due to public speculation.

“For quite some time, residents have been asking me what my intentions are,” he said.

“I get questioned about this almost every day. With neither Noel Playford nor Bob Ab-

bot intending to run again, I thought it was time to put some of that speculation to rest.”

Current Mayor Noel Playford said Cr Wellington’s intention to run as mayor in the next election was “good news”.

“People recognise Tony’s ability, plus he’s now had four years’ experience as a councillor to go with it, and it’s hard to beat relevant

experience in any position, particularly a leadership one,” Cr Playford said.

“The last two busy years have shown him what’s important for an effective council.

There’s no doubt he’s ready to make the stepup, and I wish him well in his campaign next year.”

Shifting shores of sinkhole A SINKHOLE larger than a football oval that swallowed a caravan and campervan at Inskip Point has been deemed “relatively stable”.

A geotechnical engineer has advised Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) the sinkhole site was now “relatively stable” and preliminary advice was that the event may have been a “near shore landslide” rather than a true sinkhole.

According to QPWS, the event has likely passed with a flat beach edge forming but coastal erosion is still occurring and this may result in more trees collapsing.

The sinkhole is estimated to be 200 metres long, 50 metres wide, some 7.5 metres deep in its central area and nine metres at its deepest point, further out from the central area.

The landslide happened on Saturday night 26 September, about 11.30pm, with a campervan, caravan and tent being swallowed when the sand gave way. No-one was injured.

More than 300 campers were evacuated from the area, with the MV Beagle campground and eastern section of Sarawak campground to remain closed.

QPWS is urging people to avoid the area, observe traffic barriers and warning signs.

The MV Natone, SS Dorrigo and The Oaks campgrounds are still open and access to the barge via Inskip Point is also open to vehicles.

Refunds will be offered to those who wish to cancel their booking.

The sinkhole was continuously expanding until it was declared "relatively stable" on Monday 28 September.

A caravan and a truck was swallowed when the sinkhole opened at about 11.30pm on Saturday night 26 September. No-one has been injured.

Puppy's love would mean a welcome relief

THE school holidays are usually a time for family holidays or trips to the park, but for the Laidlaw family of Tewantin life with their autistic son means they won’t be heading out at all.

Parents Sabine and Warren said their 12-year-old son Ziggy, who is non-verbal autistic, has reached an age where he wants to explore outside his home environment.

“We are unable to take him out because he runs away and has no sense of danger,” Sabine said.

“Ziggy has now realised he can climb over fences and in the past two weeks has been found in the middle of Beckmans Road watching the cars fly past him.

“Although he found this very exciting, it has been very traumatic for ourselves and our two children.”

Sabine said her son is a bright and bubbly boy, but his disability means family life is a “struggle”.

“I have witnessed the effects Ziggy’s disability has had on our other two children grow-

ing up,” she said. “For example, we are unable to go to restaurants or to the park for a day out.”

Sabine said the impact of family life really “hit home” when her eldest son, Luca, wrote a letter about his despair for his brother’s behaviour and fear of losing him.

“It hit home that myself, my husband and my children need help,” she said.

Now, with the help of the Noosa Vietnam Veterans Association and Sunshine Butterflies, the Laidlaw family are hoping to raise funds to buy a Smart Pup for Ziggy.

“When I was given information about the benefits of Smart Pups I got excited,” Sabine said.

“There pups can provide a distraction to an autistic child’s frustrations and provide an anchor to allow independence, as well as hold the child in an embrace when out and about.”

For Sabine, a Smart Pup would mean the family can enjoy the simple things in life such as going out for dinner, to the park for the day and sleeping through the night.

A Smart Pup costs $25,000 to train and place with a family, but the Vietnam Veterans Association of Noosa have already kickstart-

THE Australian Sex Party has slammed a recent spike in fines for wilful exposure at Noosa’s unofficial nudist beach, calling for locals to protest.

Australian Sex Party acting president for the Queensland branch Dr Mark McGovern said the party was “dismayed” by recent prosecutions for wilful exposure of “at least six citizens enjoying naturism at Alexandria Bay (A Bay)”.

“It does seem particularly bizarre these prosecutions have occurred on an unofficial nudist beach of some 30 years,” he said.

Noosa Heads officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said fining people for wilful exposure at A Bay was not a priority policing issue.

According to the Summary Offences Act (2005) (Number 4, section 9), males and females can be fined; “a person must not wilfully expose his or her genitals, unless the person has a reasonable excuse”.

“I’ll be 65 soon,” he said.

“I’ve had enough. I know I have retired once and come back, but that was after a two-year gap.”

Cr Abbot, who was also mayor of Noosa Council and mayor of Sunshine Coast Regional Council, said he planned to play music, go fishing and remain involved in community groups into his retirement.

Noosa Today asked the remaining councillors if they planned to run in the 2016 local government elections.

Cr Frank Wilkie said he had been considering running as mayor and would officially declare his intentions over the next few weeks.

“A lot can happen between now and March,” he said.

Cr Wilkie said it was important to keep looking ahead as there was still much work to do to build the new council.

“I’m hoping for, and will work to create, a positive, forward-looking, future-focused

team,” he said. “(A team) willing to follow through on and review the extensive work of the current Noosa council and build upon it.”

Cr Wilkie said the focus would include further diversification of Noosa’s economy, as well as work on a new planning scheme that responds to changing community needs while protecting the environment.

Cr Sandy Bolton said she would also run in the 2016 elections, and Cr Frank Pardon also confirmed he would “definitely be running for council”.

“At this stage, I will be running as a councillor, but my options are always open and we’ll see who else is going to be running for mayor,” he said.

“I have the experience of over 13 years now behind me, and I shall watch with interest how the election contest will be conducted and whether I, and others, will have to struggle with similar goings on that have polarised this community in the past.”

Cr Joe Jurisevic did not reply to a request for comment from Noosa Today.

By JOLENE OGLE IT’S time for smokers to bin their butts as the council calls on locals to act responsibly when it comes to disposing of rubbish.

Noosa Today recently published an article about locals who are frustrated at collecting hundreds of cigarette butts from the garden beds along the Noosa Main Beach.

The council was unable to comment at the time but has since written a letter to the editor advising Noosa Today of its response.

In the letter, Noosa Council’s waste and environmental health manager Wayne Schafer said it was important for the community to remember that disposing of a cigarette butt in the open environment is an offence which can attract a fine under state government litter legislation.

Mr Schafer said anyone who wants to dispose of their cigarette butts responsibly can col-

lect small, reusable, pocket-size cigarette butt containers free of charge from the council “Smokers can also provide their own containers to dispose of their cigarette butts until they locate an appropriate bin,” he said.

In response to calls from the community for more bins near the Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving tower, Mr Schafer said the council provides bins in areas where people frequent and staff assess requests for extra bins on a caseby-case basis.

“Council does not provide bins in every location where people congregate to smoke,” he said.

“Beachgoers should be aware that smoking is not permitted between the flags on a patrolled beach.”

Anyone who would like to collect a personal, portable cigarette butt bin can drop into the Council Chambers at 9 Pelican Street, Tewantin.

THE inaugural Noosa Community Biosphere Association (NCBA) general meeting will be held on Thursday 8 October with the new management committee to be announced on the night.

The NCBA was formed in June and has since been under a caretaker committee in the lead up to the general meeting at which a new management committee will be elected.

Current committee member John Wood said the association has received “fantastic” feedback from Noosa residents.

“We are extremely pleased with the support we’ve received from our community,” he said.

Free advice to get away from abusive home NOOSA locals who are experiencing domestic or family violence are being reminded that they can get free legal help from Legal Aid Queensland.

Legal Aid Queensland CEO Anthony Reilly said the organisation helps thousands of people who are experiencing domestic violence every year.

It offers a range of support from helping people to understand their legal options to helping them access protection under the law.

The first election for the association is due to be contested with 15 nominees vying for just eight seats at the AGM on Thursday 8 October.

According to a media statement from NCBA, the association is wholly independent of the council and receives no ongoing funding from it.

Mr Wood said the association has been granted $10,000 in seed funding to form the association and has received $3000 so far.

Young ambassadors show way to visitors

By JOLENE OGLE THE Gold Coast may have bikini-clad Meter Maids but Noosa has launched a new tourism initiative to help visitors feel even more welcome.

Noosa is now home to Youth Ambassadors dressed in bright blue shirts who will be on Hastings Street throughout the school holidays to help tourists with any questions they may have about the region.

They are all students from Sunshine Beach High School and have completed the Tourism Noosa Welcome to Noosa program so

they are armed with the latest information on the local region.

Local resident Val Smart brought the idea to Noosa MP Glen Elmes as a way of creating mobile assistance for visitors.

“I was thinking of how Gold Coast has the Meter Maids and I thought, what do we have here?” he said.

“Why not get our youth involved as Youth Ambassadors.”

The program will run for the next week of the school holidays as a trial period with Youth Ambassadors walking along Hastings Street in groups of

twos for their shifts.

Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said it was all about putting the “rubber on the road” with the students hitting the streets over a two week period.

“This is another way we can enhance the visitors’ stay and having young locals help people is a really positive thing,” he said.

Mr Elmes said it was great to see the students who have “gone out of their way to put in the time” to help visitors.

“The fact the students are volunteering like this is just fantastic,” he said.

IF MALCOLM Turnbull is as smart as he thinks he is, then he must realise that Scott Morrison and the party will use him and his current popularity to help them win the next Federal Election.

After they have all been sworn in the knives will be out and it will be a repeat of, “on for one and all” and no quarter or loyalty given.

That’s the sorry state of our federal politicians in today’s Australia and we allow it by voting for them without insisting they serve out their term as elected by the people and not that joke for democracy the caucus. It would be a joke if it wasn’t so serious and that it was costing not only money but the talents of some of our few but dedicated politicians.

Deep pockets SO FAR because of councillors’ failure, the ratepayers are up for legal fees on the Masters project. It now looks that there could be costs for both the Cooroy Tourist Park and service station as well as the Civic Shopping Centre extension. Both projects will give both short and long-term employment and when completed be of great advantage to so many people. The developers of both these projects are no fools and seem to have far more insight than the present council and will without doubt appeal .

THE word racial is not in my vocabulary but what I don’t understand is why “I do unto others, as I would want them to do unto me, or live and let live” yet if a Muslim moved in next door to me he would want me to treat him as an equal (and I would) but he would always refer to me as an infidel. I find being called an “infidel” offensive. I am studying the Koran as we speak and I can tell you infidel certainly doesn’t mean equal.

There are two types of Muslims - radicals and moderates. The radicals want to take over the world with force immediately as ISIS is doing. The moderates want to take over the world also, but they want to do it with infiltration.

That is to act peacefully until they get into control, then instil Sharia law. The latter is called “Hudna”. Both strategies are taken from the Koran. Hail to the chiefs NOOSA deserves the best and we have scored superbly with Noel Playford. He’ll be a hard act to follow but I believe we have a brilliant mayoral successor in Tony Wellington. Tony is an incredibly smart bloke, but also a very unassuming chap; friendly, caring, hard-working, very knowledgeable on environmental issues and great at keeping constituents informed.

He served on the Sunshine Coast Council in order to help protect Noosa interests during the SCRC “occupation" and once we regained independence, he halved his pay packet to stand for the new Noosa Council and stand up for what he believed in. Of course he has his detractors; most of them are familiar names from the letters pages, but few have his selfless dedication to our beautiful Noosa. Tony will make an excellent mayor.

Welcome home OUR welcome back to Australia from overseas on Monday morning was less than brilliant. The PA announcements from the Brisbane Airport Corporation were somewhat disingenuous, too.

“There may be a slight delay due to industrial action by the workers with the Immigration and Border Protection Department.”

The slight delay meant we were in very long, slow-moving, winding queues, very reminiscent of arriving in Los Angeles before they fixed their problems. In fact, the ‘slight delay’ meant it took us less time to drive from the Brisbane Airport to Noosaville, than it took to get from the plane to the parking garage.

With all the bad press about unions recently, I’d think they would be trying to show their fellow citizens how necessary unions are by some other method than annoying us greatly.

Plain arrogance IN MY opinion the arrogance of this council is astounding. Their continued mismanagement of capital works (63 per cent last year and three per cent instead of 16 per cent at end August) has now been compounded by what appears to be some different accounting; about $4 million in planned projects from June have disappeared.

Funds for maintenance and upgrades of storm-water, boardwalks, community facilities and IT projects have all been downgraded.

We now learn Noosa’s Biosphere is in danger of being hijacked by Noosa Parks Association; they’re seeking funds from Noosa Biosphere Reserve Community Association so they can pursue heritage recognition (and appear to have a dominant representation of nominees for the NBRFCA committee). NPA is also seeking to partner with council in the purchase of North Shore land (ordinary council meeting minutes).

Beans beats two tick attack BEANS, the 15-year-old beagle, is back home with her family after a double tick bite landed her in intensive care for a week.

It was a harrowing experience for owner Colleen Bichel, who rushed her beloved beagle to the Tanawha-based emergency hospital after finding a tick on Beans’s neck.

“When I found the tick on Beans, she was already vomiting and having trouble walking. I got to the Tanawha clinic within 30 minutes and she was already a lot sicker by then,” Colleen said.

Although treatment was started straight away, Beans was already having respiratory difficulty and, in consultation with Ms Bichel, the decision was made to put her on lifesaving mechanical ventilation.

Sunshine Coast AES director Dr Matt Rosen said in tick cases, one of the major issues for animals was respiratory failure and in advanced cases life support was needed.

“Beans required 24hour intensive care; she was put into an induced coma and connected to a ventilator,” he said.

“Beans is definitely a fighter, because a second tick was found by our staff while she was in hospital.

"That hampered her recovery time a little; she required further ventilation but Colleen was absolutely super throughout it all.”

Dr Rosen said it was because of cases like Beans that he and his fellow AES directors made the decision to expand their services to include a second Sunshine Coast Emergency practice at Noosa, which opens its doors for the first time today (1 October).

“AES has been in existence for 10 years. We expanded our services to the Sunshine Coast in February 2014 because we wanted to provide essential emergency and critical care medicine to the entire south east coast of Queensland, based on the successful format of our other two practices at Underwood and the Gold Coast,” Dr Rosen said.

Noosa Animal Emergency Service is located at 43 Rene Street Noosaville and from 1 October, will open every weeknight from 5.30pm to 8am and 24 hours over the weekend - from 5.30pm Friday night until 8am Monday morning, as well as every public holiday. Phone 5430 6900 for more information.

HUNDREDS of Noosa locals flocked to the Noosa Leisure Centre on Saturday 19 September to farewell one of Noosa’s treasures, Emma Freeman.

The 93-year-old was an author, prize-winning artist, playwright, sculptor and activist who helped shape the Noosa that we all know and love today.

The memorial service has been described as the Noosa equivalent of a state funeral and was well attended, with many joining together to remember a remarkable woman.

Emma’s life was nothing short of captivating and she captured her story in her book Hastings Street: Stories from Noosa Past, which was revised only days before her death.

Throughout her life, Emma was an integral part of the Noosa community from releasing her controversial art exhibition in the 1980s that included paintings of nude middle-aged women, to joining Noosa Parks Association in the 1960s and being at many environmental protests throughout the

The development applications referred to the failed Petrac development on Noosa North Shore that saw the company dissolve into liquidation before the accommodation development was completed.

The very distinguished gentlemen THE sun shone brightly for the inaugural Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride through Noosa on Sunday (27 September), with 96 well-dressed bike riders spreading awareness of prostate cancer throughout the region.

This is the first time the global event has been held on the Sunshine Coast, let alone in Noosa, with event organisers saying they were overwhelmed by the response.

Bike riders from around the world including Italy, Indonesia and America, all took to the streets on Sunday 27 September to raise money for prostate cancer research and to raise awareness of prostate cancer.

Local business owner and event organiser Cameron MacGowan addressed the riders on the day and said the ride was worth it if one man on Hastings Street decided to get checked for prostate cancer.

Cameron led riders through Hastings Street, down to Coolum and then back up the coast road to Hastings Street where they celebrated with a very dapper morning tea, silent auction and live music to raise funds for prostate cancer research.

Mark of respect for our seniors TODAY (1 October) marks the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, a celebration of the contribution older men and women make to the community.

The International Day of Older Persons also highlights the particular needs and challenges faced by many older people in our community.

According to the UN, almost 700 million people are now over the age of 60 and by 2050 over 20 per cent of the world’s population will be 60 or older, meaning there will be more people aged over 60 than children in the world.

This year’s theme is sustainability and age inclusiveness in the urban environment and aims to show demography matters for sustainable development and that population dynamics will shape the key developmental challenges the world is facing in 2015.

According to the UN, if the world’s aim is to “build the future we want” then it’s time to address the population over 60, which is expected to reach 1.4 billion by 2030.

To celebrate the International Day of Older Persons, Noosa Today has collected a list of Noosa-based organisations and groups who advocate for older people’s rights, provide entertainment or simply offer a social space for retirees.

AIR Noosa The Association of Independent Retirees (AIR) Noosa branch is a not-for-profit organisation advocating for the interests of selffunded and partly self-funded retirees or those about to retire. The organisation has 8000 members across 65 branches Australia wide, while the Noosa branch has served the community for over 20 years and is one of the largest branches in the state.

The Noosa branch meets at the South Pacific Resort, 179 Weyba Road, Noosaville, every second Thursday of the month at 9.45am for a 10am start.

When Privacy is Priority

Property is heating up THE arrival of spring has resulted in increased new listings, according to CoreLogic RP Data senior research analyst Cameron Kusher.

Mr Kusher said CoreLogic RP Data counted the number of properties available for sale each week based on a rolling 28day view of advertised sales and looked at new listings as well as re-listings, which combined, provide a total listings count.

“We classify a new listing as any property that we haven’t previously seen advertised for sale over the past six months, whereas relistings are properties that have previously been advertised over the six-month period,” he said.

The number of new listings across the combined capitals is at its highest level since March this year, while total listings are at their highest level since May. In Brisbane, new listings were found to be at their highest level since March 2015 and total listings were at their highest level since July.

The property market is heating up as the warmer weather settles in.

“Over the remainder of the spring selling season, it will be interesting to see how these trends play out,” Mr Kusher said.

“Furthermore we will be watching closely to see if the elevated stock levels in certain markets have any significant impact on value growth and transaction volumes.”

be treated to one of the best line-ups of short films - across all genres in not only this country, but in the world,” Margie said.

Margie said she was very excited to give a little teaser of what was to come.

“One of our featuring short films Boogaloo and Graham was nominated for an academy award this year and truly reflect the calibre of

the shorts shown at Heart of Gold,” she said.

Set in Belfast in the 1970s, Boogaloo and Graham tells the story of two young boys who discover the facts of life aided by the help of their pet chickens.

It won Best Short Film at the BAFTAs and was nominated for Best Short Film Live Action at the Academy Awards.

Check it out during the special Irish Shorts session on Friday 9 October and also during Shorts - H15 on Saturday 10 October.

Festival in flight THE Floating Land Festival will kick into full swing this long weekend with a program bursting with live entertainment and family fun throughout Boreen Point.

An Artist Studio Walk will be held on Friday 2 October, from 2pm, offering locals and visitors the chance to see where some of the region’s best art works are created.

On Friday night, the Apollonian Hotel will hold twilight markets, from 4pm-8pm, followed by the Muso Jam Night, from 8pm-10pm, while pop-up stores and roaming entertainment will bring the foreshore to life throughout the weekend.

Film Festival, to be held in Gympie from 8-11 October, will also help celebrate the Floating Land Festival with free viewings of fantastic films.

A family-friendly movie will be shown on Saturday 3 October at the Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club, from 6.30pm, an Aboriginal cultural movie will be shown at the Shipwreck outdoor screen on Sunday 4 October, from 7pm, and an adult screening will be held in the lounge area of the Apollonian Hotel on Monday 5 October, from 8pm.

Artist Studio Walk: Jan Sweet is one of the many talented artists to exhibit their work throughout the Floating Land Festival’s Artist Studio Walk and will be welcoming all to her home gallery at 12 Laguna Street, Boreen Point, on Sunday 4 October, from 2pm. Other artists taking part in the Artist Studio Walk, opening their art spaces to the public, are Maureen Williams at 45 Woongar Street, Phyl Williams at 14 Woongar Street, Michele Knightley at Roberts House on Orchard Avenue, Susan Coburn at the Muddy Waters Studio at 14 Vista Street and MarkGlenn Harmony at the Harmony on Boreen studio at 8 Boreen Parade.

Pop-Up Shops: The Floating Land Festival incorporates a host of art mediums through the festival from foreshore installations to art exhibitions, as well as the unique fabric art works from local artist Stephanie Haslam. Throughout the long weekend, Stephanie will display everyday items such as bags, hats and cushions, made from fabric she has designed using local native plants as inspiration. The display will be named Look Like Noosa and each item includes a tag naming the featured native plant. The designs used catalogue Stephanie’s journey with Noosa’s native plants from NICA’s publication of her field guide to the surface design project including community artists, and will aim to draw attention to the importance of place and the value of its protection. NICA funded the printing of the fabric and the items will be for sale to raise funds for the NICA’s education projects.

Potential in festival’s future TO celebrate the past, present and future of the Floating Land Festival, a forum will be held at The J on Saturday 17 October.

Event organiser Megan Marks, of Noosa Council, said the forum was about re-imagining the festival and discussing what it could become. “We’ve shipped in speakers to tell us about environmental art around Australia and the world, and also an organiser of a similar outdoor sculpture festival, Swell Sculpture Festival, who’s going to show us how a community group runs a festival that attracts over 250,000 people,� she said.

Megan said anyone who attends the forum can expect plenty of opportunities to wonder at what the Floating Land Festival was and chat about what it can become. “There will be times for discussion, formally and informally, as well as helping build an environmental artwork and to do a little of their own artwork to tell their thoughts on Floating Land,� she said. “It’ll be a chance for old Floating Landers to catch up and a chance for new faces to become involved. It will be interesting.�

The forum will also include a Slideslam, a quick-fire insight into what locals think of the Floating Land Festival and environmental art.

Artist Wendy McGrath said being awarded the Noosa Biosphere Environmental Art Prize and the residency at Good Shepherd College gave her a great opportunity to take ideas about art and environment into the wider community.

The program offered students artistic enrichment, while teaching them environmental awareness, Ms Shadforth said. “This exhibition forms part of this year’s Floating Land program and we’re delighted to host these artworks from some very talented children,� she said.

Simply super solution NILLA from Vanilla Food at Belmondos has shared her recipe for an organic superfood frittata.

Delicious, fresh, healthy salsa for your next get-together.

Ingredients: 8 truss tomatoes, seeded and diced.

2 large cucumbers, diced.

Half a cup of super sweet corn kernels (fresh is best).

1 small yellow capsicum, diced.

1 small red onion, finely chopped.

1 large avocado, diced.

A quarter of a cup of cori-

ander leaves, chopped.

A quarter of a teaspoon smoked paprika.

Salt and pepper.

Method: Simply place all ingredients in a large salad bowl and toss until well-combined.

Be careful not to mash the avocado. Season with salt and pepper and serve to your sureto-be-impressed friends.

Great Pizza, Great Pasta!

Ingredients: 1 cup cooked black quinoa.

2 teaspoon chia seeds.

2 cup kale, shredded.

1/2 cup green peas or broad beans.

1 cup baby spinach.

1/2 cup broccoli, processed into “rice".

12 eggs.

1 cup cream, or coconut cream if dairy free.

Salt and pepper to taste.

Method: 1) Lightly whisk eggs, cream and salt and pepper in a bowl.

2) Add vegetables, quinoa and chia then mix to combine.

3) Pour into a lined baking dish and press lightly.

4) Cook for 40 minutes on 160C or until firm.

5) Cool a little before cutting. Serve with fresh salad and Vanilla Food green goddess pesto.

Geoff said they needed two cooks outside with the pizza oven, and someone in the kitchen making the kids' pizzas and would be looking to advertise in the next week or so.

THE Ivory Palms Resort’s restaurant has a new name, a new look and a new focus.

Now called PK’s Cafe and Bar, the restaurant is catering heavily to families - the resort’s target market - leading the way with beautiful wood-fired pizzas, perfect for locals and visitors.

“The Ivory Palms Resort has 130 apartments and for many years we have had the Palms Restaurant and Bar,” owner and resort manager Geoff Hussin said.

“But it didn’t really hit the family market the way we wanted to. Breakfasts were going really really well through the week.”

However dinner was not attracting the families that the Ivory Palms was famous for.

And so Geoff said it was decided to give the restaurant a new name and a major make-over, including major extensions.

The new name reflects the family feeling of the whole resort.

“It’s now PK’s Cafe and Bar,” he said.

“It’s short for Pretty Katelyn. When our daughter was young I use to call her Pretty Katelyn and my wife would call her Precious Katelyn.”

The couple eventually shortened their nicknames for their daughter to PK and the name stuck.

PK’s menu has also undergone some renovations as well - and it took some pretty heavy lifting to do it.

“We craned in an Italian wood-fired pizza oven,” Geoff said.

“The oven weighs two tonnes - we had to get builders to create a Besser block bench to hold it.”

The oven caused a stir when it flew into place and is now still causing a stir, with the restaurant producing beautiful wood-fired delights.

The restaurant is now open to locals to enjoy wood-fired pizza and popular beers on tap on Friday and Saturday nights.

But Geoff and his family have plans to increase that down the track, adding in Sunday

Journey on a world of colour NOOSA garden furniture store Patio presents the art exhibition 'Exotica’.

The exhibition is a collection of paintings from local artists Pam Taylor and Fay White.

The event takes you on a journey in the world of colour with tropical Queensland flowers, foliage and sea urchins to exotic places in Morocco with its culture in souk markets, designs and patterns.

Pam Taylor and Fay White have been artistic friends for some years both originally from Sydney, then finding themselves both moving to Noosa separately in early 2000, only to connect again with their art.

Fay is drawn to colour

because it makes her feel invigorated and happy. Being an avid gardener and with the knowledge of the botanical names of plants and flowers, she often paints exotic tropical flowers, patterns or still life subjects with a stylised technique.

Pam’s works is contemporary/semi abstract using bold colour; she researches subjects and is drawn to colourful bold shaped foliage, fruit and flowers or from memories of travel with photographs that capture the culture of exotic countries like Morocco. She prefers to photograph the details of what catches her eye to paint, these become her holiday pictures, so there is always plenty of subject mat-

ter for further inspiration.

The “Exotica” art exhibition will be hosted at PATIOTop Garden Furniture in ACRES-NOOSA from 1 October 2015 to 2 January 2016.

Locals and visitors alike are invited to join for a ‘meet the artist’ open evening on Saturday 10 October from 3pm to 5pm.

COUNCIL is encouraging residents to drop off any useful household items they no longer need at the EumundiNoosa Road landfill’s not-forprofit Briteside Tip Top Shop.

There is no charge for dropping items off at Briteside, it saves paying a tip fee and gives household items a new lease on life with someone who can use them.

Briteside sells secondhand household items at very low cost providing a service to the community. Re-using contributes to a more sustainable society.

Council’s Waste manager Wayne Schafer commented: “Noosa residents did so well with leaving items out for kerbside collection that Brite-

No longer wanted, but still useable, furniture, whitegoods, household and sporting equipment can be taken off your hands at Briteside, located at council's Eumundi landfill. side is running a little low on stock.

“Briteside prides itself on

having a wide range of goods to sell, everything from plates and cutlery to chairs and whitegoods.

“If anyone missed the kerbside collection, or has other items they no longer find useful, please bring them to Briteside."

Mr Schafer encouraged residents to save themselves time by pre-sorting their items for Briteside, from their general waste items, prior to arriving at the landfill.

LAST Sunday’s Deus surf swap meet at the Bondi Pavilion brought out a big crowd, despite the fact that it was a cold and windswept spring day at Australia’s most famous beach.

A few early morning squalls came through and wiped us out of the courtyard, where we

were selling books and magazines alongside Matt Cuddihy’s stunning photographic art prints.

Fortunately, we were able to regroup out of the wind and rain, and when the sun popped out, the bar opened and the band played - the excellent Sons Of The East - we forgot about the morning’s soaking and spent the day signing and selling to happy punters.

The Deus Ex Machina group does this kind of thing rather well, and Bondi Beach on a Sunday afternoon proved to be a perfect venue,

with more than 100 interesting surfboards from different eras up for grabs.

Noosa was well-represented, apart from your humble correspondent and the aforementioned Cuddles, with Thomas Bexon sharing shaping duties in the shipping container turned shaping bay, with guru Bob McTavish, and Harrison Roach on microphone duty all day.

These things are always great opportunities for tribal reunions, and Bondi was no exception, with the early-days Bali crew out in force this time. Film-maker Jack McCoy calls all of us who came after the screening of Morning of the Earth “the second wave”, and second-wavers present included Big Jack himself, along with fellow film-makers Dick Hoole and David “Mexican” Sumpter (all 1973) and myself and Newcastle’s Uluwatu style-master Peter McCabe (1974).

I hadn’t seen the colourful Novocastrian for more than 25 years, having missed him in Bali earlier in the year by a matter of hours, so we had plenty of yarns to swap. Peter celebrated turning 60 by returning to the fabulous lefts of Grajagan, Java, with his old partner in crime, Gerry Lopez.

Back in the 1970s and early ’80s, there was a star-studded pack in the water for every great session at Uluwatu, Padang and G-Land, but no-one surfed those stellar spots with more down-the-line speed and pure class than Gerry and Pete.

On their long-awaited return bout this winter past, there were some memorable sessions, although Pete confessed that once Matt Hoy and some other Newcastle mates turned up, there were more Bintangs drained than barrels claimed.

I guess we’ll be the judge of that. A film crew captured the best sessions for a forthcoming Lopez biopic, coming out this summer.

The mystery of history HERE’S a confession for you. I consider myself something of a historian, having written a dozen or so books involving massive historical research around Australia and several different countries. Believe me, I’ve done my time spooling micro-fiche through the projector and sneezing in dusty newspaper collections.

However, to my eternal shame I had never

heard of Cooroy-Noosa Genealogical and Historical Research Group, Inc., until being invited along as guest speaker at their monthly meeting at Cooroy Library.

My subject, Noosa’s surfing history, was probably not normally on their agenda, but when president Bev Warner called the large audience to order, they proved to be attentive and eager to share their experiences at the beach from long ago. The group’s senior member, a lovely lady called Edna Smith, had even brought a pair of her husband’s old woollen trunks from the 1940s to show me. Now I wouldn’t necessarily have picked Edna for a surf chick back in the day, but she had plenty of tales to tell me about the wild crew at the Noosa Heads Surf Club way back when.

I find history endlessly fascinating, and sometimes forget that not everyone shares my obsession with the smallest fragments of new information, which to me are like pieces of a giant jigsaw puzzle. So it was a pleasure to spend time with a community group whose membership is so devoted to recording and archiving our past.

Not goodbye, but see you later Last weekend in Sydney I spent some time with two old mates who have been told to put their affairs in order. It’s the age we are, but visiting people who are on the way out can be a painful and debilitating experience.

In this case it was neither. Both men were resigned to their situations, and if positive is too strong a word, at least accepting of their fates. Neither is young, but they might have expected another 10 or 15 years of productive life. It’s not to be, and I can only admire their courage and spirit.

I was reminded of that great old surf warrior, Barry “Magoo” McGuigan, who in the final stages of cancer at the age of 85, was too ill for two days to take my farewell phone call.

When we spoke on the third morning, two days before he died, he was effusive in his apologies for not being available. When I started to choke up on saying goodbye, he said, “Oh, don’t you worry about that, mate. You look after yourself, and I’ll see you later.”

AS I sat on the steps of the Impact Boxing Academy in Cooroy with Sam Cameron-Hands and discussed his recent trip to Russia, it became clear - here was a very determined and confident young man.

Not only was he chosen to represent Australia at the recent World Amateur Boxing Championships in St Petersburg, but this well-spoken fighter, training under the coaching and supervision of Mark Evans, also received the honor of being named the captain of the junior team.

“It certainly was a great trip, a good learning experience,” he said.

To achieve selection was not easy. Starting his career some five years ago Sam now boxes in the 57kg division. Throughout the years, he has had a total of 53 fights and won in his own words, “40 something, not really sure of the total”.

Included in that “40 something” are three state and national championships, and three National Golden Gloves (International Competition) Championships.

At this stage his father David bought me up to speed on the family history.

“I never fought myself, but Sam's grandfather and great-grandfather were both fighters.

Also in our family tree there is Freddie Mills the great English fighter, who as a professional won the Light Heavyweight Championship of the World.”

David and his wife Denise, along with Sam and his young brother Ben, 13, migrated to Cooroy from Manchester, in England, in 2007.

Denise, known as Dee, said: “Coming to Australia we wanted to change everything. We first saw Brisbane but started seeing ads about

'Noosa hinterlands came for a look' and fell in love with the place. Honestly I think I have died and gone to heaven”.

Regarding the boys' boxing careers, it was Ben who started it all. Ever since he was fouryears-old, Ben has been obsessed by the sport.

Once settled in Cooroy, they knew they had to do something about it.

“We read an article regarding the Impact Boxing Academy, so we enrolled him - at eight years of age.

“Typical of our boys, if Ben was into something then Sam had to be in it too, so three weeks later he joined the club.

“David and I met with the coach Mark Evans and the relationship is such that we now call ourselves the Impact Family. We couldn’t be happier.”

For Sam, his future is clear.

“I want to make the Australian team for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and follow this up by boxing in the Olympics. All going well I then plan to turn professional.”

Sam, who is a Noosa District High School student, said his mates were jealous of his travel, but proud of his achievements.

His preparation for Russia was tough, with training six days a week - running and spring work in the morning and gym sessions in the evening.

“This tough training is great for self-discipline. It gives you a clear idea of what you want in life,” he said.

For Mark, who travelled to Russia as one of the Home Coaches, working with the boys has been a pleasure.

“They are good lads and they have no trouble accepting the self-discipline that is required to reach the top in boxing. There can be no half measures; everything has to be done properly.”

The trip to Russia had one drawback for Sam. When the draw for the bouts came out,

In one of the closest fights of the night Sam lost on a split decision.

Although disappointed he accepted the decision with good grace.

“Split decisions happen. It goes with the sport and and you have to accept it,” he said.

With 47 countries and 475 fighters in attendance it was not just about the competition.

“With countries like Japan, USA, Cuba, England, Ireland, Russia and the Ukraine being bought together it had to be well organised and well run; and it certainly was,” Mark said.

“After the tournament they used the same venue as a training camp. With such a high

standard of fighters on call, the training and sparing sessions were a great learning curve.”

Not to be overshadowed by his older brother, young Ben has had 48 fights for 40 win. Included in these are three Australian titles and five Golden Gloves.

To watch this young man spar with his fast hands and good footwork, there can be no doubt that when he is eligible to contest the World Championships, a place in the Australian Team is not beyond his reach.

For the Cameron-Hands brothers their next tournament will be Cooroy High School this Saturday evening.

Then for Sam, in October it's off to Germany where once again he will represent his country fighting against the German team for the Brandenburg Cup - tough international competition with three fights in 10 days.

Away from the fight game Mark runs his own company, Evans Painting Contractors and as such is able to provide work for some of his dedicated boxing squad. His success over the years speaks for itself.

However to join this highly tuned team you don’t just walk in; a quite informative phone call is the best way to open the door.

“Love to hear from young people,” the coach said.

Mark, a veteran of some 32 fights has run the academy for 10 years To assist with the financial burden Sam is sponsored by the John Jenkins Company, Ricon Constructions.

“Business houses should support the community so to assist Sam and the Impact Club is a great opportunity to do so,” Mr Jenkins said.

“Young Sam is a perfect gentleman and Impact is a tightknit family club. Both are a credit to the community.”

LIFE saving is a wonderful Aussie culture and has played an enormous role in the development of our country over the past 100 years.

Sydney’s Manly Beach kickstarted the evolution way back in 1901, when people weren’t allowed to swim in the surf between 6am and 6pm. Local paper editor William Goucher broke the rule and then put it on the front page.

As you would expect, rallies followed and weight of public response forced the silly timeline to be cancelled.

But it was three years later at Bondi, when the first ever official recording of a rescue was listed. A skinny kid call Charlie Smith was

dragged out of the water, by future Olympian Frank Beaurepaire. Yes, he was the founder of Beaurepair Tyres and went on to represent Australia for many years.

So what happened to Mr Smith you ask?

Well Charlie stamped himself as a pioneer of everything that's good about being an Aussie. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith later wowed the world with his aviation feats, and along with Bundaberg's Bert Hinkler and Amelia Earhart put Australia right on the runway of world travel.

It wasn’t long after that when life saver Cecil Healy again displayed the Aussie spirit that has defined our nation.

Healy was a member of the Australian Swimming Team for the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, and the Manly life saver was a great chance to win the 100 freestyle. After some disputes, the Amercians were suspended from

racing which meant the hot favourite Duke Kahanamoku would miss out.

The Amercians had missed the semis, but Healy - in an extradinory show of sportsmanship - insisted to Australian officals and then the International Olympic jury that it would be an injustice if the Duke was forced to miss the final.

They swam in their own semi-final, where the Duke set a new world record of 1.02.4 and then went on to win the final - and gold medal - relegating Healy to the silver.

ON SUNDAY morning, members of the Noosa Heads SLSC, gathered at the clubhouse for a full council meeting. A major part of the agenda was the election of the Surf Sports director. Like other positions in the club, this is one where the successful applicant is elected to office for a period of two seasons as opposed to the old system of one. On Sunday, Peter French was re-elected to the office despite having expressed his intention to step aside. It is a tough job and with an ever increasing number of competitors, it gets bigger and tougher each season.

With the Australian Titles coming to the Sunshine Coast in 2016, he will certainly be kept busy. We wish him well. Noosa's move to take surf lifesaving into the schools is still going strong with Noosa officials having discussions with schools such as Churchie and Marist Brothers in Brisbane. School courses followed

by Advanced Surf Education Programs is showing people that in the modern day surf club, not just Noosa, but lifesaving in general, now has more to offer our young people than ever before.

During the meeting NOBBS (Noosa Old Boys and Birds) chairman Ross Fisher tabled a report, stating that they had held a meeting and reunion for the members. This is really a step in the right direction as it consolidates not only the Old Boys but also the Life Member Group and with their experience in all aspects of

lifesaving they can be of great help to the club.

It is also beneficial to the new junior members for it gives them the opportunity to meet and learn something of the club's past history from people who were involved. It is this type of friendship that can really consolidate the club and insert a feeling of pride.

No major incidents were reported from our three clubs Peregian Sunshine and Noosa. Big crowds on Noosa's Main Beach with many coming from the other open beaches after being subjected to some heavy winds.

The eagerly awaited renovations of the clubhouse facilities for the Sunshine Beach clubbies are near complete. This will be a massive improvement to their facilities and will be a great moral builder for all members.

The Nippers have completed their competition and pool swims and now raring to go for the new season. A further 15 members are in training for their bronze, and this will be a big help to the patrol roster.

Another 20 little people are about to start their training for their Surf Rescue Certificate.

Last weekend, Noosa head coach Darren Mercer took a team south to Yamba in Northern NSW to compete in the Jacob Lollback Memorial Paddle. Happy to relate the results were good.

Continuing her outstanding success in Hawaii, Jordan Mercer took the gold in the Open Womens 4km Paddle and Ironman Jack Moyes won silver in the Men's Open 4km. In the young guns, Cooper Wil-

Classic cars line up NOOSA is set to welcome hundreds of motoring enthusiasts this weekend for the annual Noosa Beach Classic Car Show.

Now considered one of East Coast Australia’s finest all-makes car show, it will feature more than 200 of the most beautiful and timeless vehicles.

Organisers say there will be more than $10 million in cars assembled in Noosa Lions Park this weekend.

Getting ready to get the show off to a flying start is Noosa Beach Car Club member Peter Rayment.

Having owned his beautiful 1948 MG-TC sports car for more than 50 years, Peter took Wayne Hoens from the Tewantin Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank for a spin to feel the wind through his hair this week.

Bendigo Bank has come on as a major sponsor of the club and with its well-known reputation for giving back to our community.

Wayne said he sees sponsor-

ship of the 27th annual show as a great fit.

“I have to say that sitting next to Peter in that classic car made me feel young all over again. It’s obvious that Peter puts a lot of love and care into his pride and joy, as do so many other car club members into their vehicles ,” Wayne said.

Kids love holiday fishing, not school

By JACK MANGROVE KIDS are having a ball, fishing over the school holidays.

The kids have been having a great time over the holiday season with some great bread and butter species in the river, starting down toward the mouth, trevally, bream, flathead and the odd tailor have all been on the menu.

The dog beach has seen some great whiting with pealed prawns, bloodworms, yabbies and pippies all doing the job. On the other side of the river, the Frying Pan has noosa.starcommunity.com.au

also been firing with quality whiting and some bigger flathead.

Poppers like the Zerek Poparazzi in the 50mm size have been working well on the whiting with soft plastics like the Squdgies prawn in the Pro Range doing the job on the flathead, diving lures trolled behind the boat or kayak have also worked on the flathead.

Gympie Terrace has also been a hive of activity with families enjoying the great spring weather.

Seems there are kids everywhere enjoying a fish with dads diligently baiting hooks and untangling

lines. Upriver has also seen some great activity with quality trevally coming from around the Tewantin Ski Run area, school jew are up toward the lake as well as some exceptional flathead coming from Lake Cooroibah.

On the Noosa North Shore, there has been an endless stream of 4X4 heading north, whiting, bream tailor and some quality jew have all come from the gutter on North Shore. Best to head up on the low tide scoping out the water looking for those deeper gutters and fishing as the tide rolls in. Make sure you top up on pil-

chards, salted bonito fillet worms and prawns before you head up, you can also collect pippies and worms from beaches. Why not enter the kids in the Davo’s Junior Fishing Comp, there are two categories under 14s and under 18s with some fantastic rod and reel combo prizes.
