Third time a charm

By PETER DOUGLAS AND JESSE GRAHAM IN A case of third time lucky, applicants will finally get the green light to develop a parcel of land with historic significance along Winscombe Ave, Tecoma.

Despite two previous knockbacks, and some fierce objection from the community, Yarra Ranges Council last week granted the applicants their wish.

Four single-storey dwellings are proposed to be built on the site, which is designed for family members to be able to live close together.

The applicants have insisted they are not developers and their ambition is to support family members.

However, the construction will require removal of significant amounts of vegetation, as well as alteration of access.

This will not include a Bunya Bunya Pine, which is a tree of historical significance to the area.

At council’s recent meeting, Kate Gutske spoke on behalf of objectors, who were concerned the development would not fit with neighbourhood character. “These plans submitted have not changed substantially from the previous plans,� she said. “This proposal is out of keeping with the character of the area. “There are a few blocks with two dwellings on a block, but four dwellings is not in keeping with the area.�

Ms Gutske said there were a “number of

flaws� with the council document, which she threatened to expose if the matter went to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Despite requests from councillors to elaborate on the alleged flaws, Ms Gutske remained tight-lipped. “If this matter proceeds to VCAT, these flaws in the report will be used to support the refusal of this development application,� she said. “This is not the first time I have spoken against planned application for a development and I have been successful at VCAT.�

A council officer assured council the executive was not aware of any flaws or errors in the report.

Cr Mike Clarke also spoke out against the development, agreeing that it went against neighbourhood character.

Cr Clarke presented an alternative plan, but was voted down.

Councillors Noel Cliff and Len Cox were also against the proposal.

Previous attempts to develop the land were for the construction of six dwellings, then four double-storey dwellings on the land.

The road where the vegetation will be removed contains an avenue of tall pines, which are known to be a local landmark in Tecoma.

However, the applicants argued they were protective of their area and noted this as a low-impact development which they believed would be conducive to the area.

DANDENONG RANGES residents are encouraged to help support wildlife, and reduce weeds and fuel loads at a free community event.

On Sunday, 4 October, between 1-4pm at Karwarra Australian Plant Garden, residents can learn about help available to them to reduce weeds and fire risk on their properties.

Residents can request a fuel reduction and fire safety walk on their property, while obtaining information about free tip passes for removal of weeds from Yarra Ranges Council.

Jean Blencowe, from the Kalorama and Mount Dandenong Action Group, and Kalowerama Community Fireguard and Weed Reduction Group,

encouraged the community to support this initiative.

“This KalRedy project is recognised as one of the first of its type in our area where federal funding will assist with planning for both fire safety and weed reduction on all land tenures surrounding our homes,” she said.

Chris Morgan, from Thompson’s Road Area Community Fireguard and Landcare Group, explained the event’s importance.

“In our area on the north west face of Mount Dandenong, we are surrounded by national parks,” she said “Parks Victoria, Yarra Ranges Council and local environmental groups have done a huge amount of work on the public land over many years.

“Now residents have the opportunity to tap into muchneeded support to complement this work on their own properties, roadsides and reserves.”

Karwarra Australian Plant Garden is the venue for the event, organised by Yarra Ranges Council, and is located behind the Kalorama Oval.

Entry is via Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, on the right after passing Kalorama Post office.

Trainees win

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS APPRENTICES and trainees from all over the Yarra Ranges were honoured last week with awards at the 2015 Casey Apprentice/Trainee Awards held at Chateau Yering in Yarra Glen.

Finalists apprentices and trainees were accompanied by about 100 of their peers, employers, family and friends on Tuesday 22 September for the awards ceremony.

Presented by Casey MP Tony Smith, the awards recognise the passion and achievements of both young and mature apprentices in the community.

“Recognising and rewarding excellence across our trades is very important, not just for those within the trades, but for our economy as well,” he said.

The awards ceremony honoured the best and brightest of apprentices and trainees from around the Casey area with certificates and recognition from peers and business leaders.

Steven’s Glass proprietor Nick Fraraccio, who is one of the committe members who selects the winners, said the awards were great for the esteem of trainees.

“Being involved with young people and encouraging them to come into the workforce is very important,” he said.

Sue O’Brien, the general manger of Chateau Yering and also a committee member, said the awards were a great asset to the drive of trainees.

“It’s fantastic to be involved with young people who are passionate and work hard,” she said.

“I also love that there are mature apprentices as well, it’s really great to recognise them too because they often get looked over.”

There were two overall winners on the night - Elizabeth Lilburn from Mount Evelyn took out the top prize in the young age group and Adrian George from Elecorp in Monbulk won the mature trainee award.

“It’s great having that recognition,” he said.

“I’m so pleased to have an employer that gave me a go.”

Mr George said starting an apprenticeship as a mature-age trainee could be really tough but winning this award had helped his outlook.

“It’s been really hard as we have two young kids and changing careers half way through life is a hard thing to do.”

“Especially going from full time work to apprenticeship wages,” he said.

Ms Lilburn also said the award was a great source of honour for her.

“I feel elated,” she said.

“I love (my co-workers) like a family, and I’m so encouraged and proud.”

Mr Smith said the selection committee had a really hard time choosing the winners from the massive number of nominations they received this year.

Show support, enjoy a ‘night in’ THE Cardinia community is being encouraged to help support local women diagnosed with a breast or gynaecological cancer.

This year, about 3700 Victorian women will host a ‘Girls’ Night In’, with events including sleep-overs, movie nights, pamper parties and many other creative ideas to raise funds for Cancer Council Victoria.

The initiative is important to the Cardinia community, with 134 local women diagnosed

with breast cancer each year, and 50 diagnosed with a form of gynaecological cancer (such as cervical, ovarian, vaginal and uterine cancers).

Last year in Cardinia, 50 passionate ‘Girls’ Night In’ hosts helped raise $15,640.

Cancer Council spokeswoman Barbara Charan said hosting a Girls’ Night In was an easy and fun way to make a tangible difference to cancer outcomes for the 5500 Victorian women

diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancer every year.

To get involved, simply register to host an event next month, invite your girlfriends over for a night in and ask them to donate what they would have spent on a night out.

Briefly On trail of bail skipper POLICE are asking for help from the public to help find a bail-skipper, known to visit the Boronia and Belgrave areas.

Victoria Police published a callout on Monday 28 September, looking for 21-year-old Grady Weinberg.

Police said warrants had been issued for Mr Weinberg’s arrest, for failing to answer bail, serious assault and stalking.

Mr Weinberg is known to visit the Boronia, Belgrave, Frankston and Mornington areas, and is about 170cm tall with a medium build, short brown hair and brown eyes.

Aquatic break-in proves futile A WOULD-BE thief has fled empty-handed after breaking into the Monbulk Aquatic Centre last week.

Between 5am and 5.15am on Monday 21 September, unknown persons broke into the aquatic centre on Baynes Park Road in Monbulk.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said that an unknown person broke into the centre through a side door, went to the reception area and looked through the cash register.

However, the would-be thief left empty-handed after a security alarm went off.

“We’re just looking for anybody who may have seen vehicles or people in the area at that time,” Det Sgt Barrow said.

Anyone who saw any suspicious activity at the time of the break in is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Strangers douse fence fire TWO good Samaritans are being sought by police after helping to extinguish a burning fence in Upwey last week.

Yarra Ranges police officers, posting on the Eyewatch Yarra Ranges Police Service Area Facebook page, said that in the early hours of Wednesday 23 September, a brush-cut fence was set on fire in Glenfern Road in Upwey.

The post read that two men passing by alerted the owner of the property and helped to extinguish the fire.

Police said the victim “in the heat of the moment” did not get the details of the men, believed to live in the Belgrave area, and that police would like to speak to them about the incident.

Scout found safe and sound A WAYWARD Scout was found safe and sound in Gembrook last week, after police were called in to help with a search.

Emerald police were called out to the Scouts Australia Gilwell Park in Gembrook-Launching Place Road, Gembroook, at 12.30am on Tuesday 22 September, after a 12-year-old boy was reported missing.

Emerald Police Sergeant Danny Hower said the boy was discovered missing at 10.30pm on Monday 21 September, and police were later called in when no trace of the boy was found.

Sgt Hower said the story ended on a happy note, when the boy was found safe and sound in another tent with a friend at 2am.

Charges over family violence A GEMBROOK man was capsicum sprayed and arrested after breaching an intervention order last week in Gembrook.

On Tuesday 22 September, Emerald police officers were called out to a family violence incident in Gembrook.

Emerald Police Sergeant Danny Hower said a 20-year-old Gembrook man was capsicum sprayed during the incident while resisting arrest, and was charged with assault, resisting police and contravening an intervention order.

Sgt Hower said the man’s intervention order was varied to exclude him from the property where the incident took place, and he was then bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 24 September.

Bird thief on the run A BIRD-LOVING thief is being hunted by police after stealing more than 15 birds last week from Lilydale.

Yarra Ranges police officers posting on the Eyewatch Yarra Ranges Police Service Area Facebook page said that overnight on Wednesday 23 September, 15 canaries and an Amazonian blue cap parrot were stolen from Lilydale.

The parrot does not have a name, but is able to say “Hello” and “What do you want?”

“The owners are very upset,” the Facebook post read.

Metal pole used in robbery POLICE are hunting two men who allegedly robbed a Chirnside Park service station with a metal pole last month.

According to police officers posting on the Eyewatch Yarra Ranges Police Service Area Facebook page, two masked men entered the service station just before 2am on Monday 10 August.

The men then jumped the counter and demanded cash, threatening an employee with a metal pole.

The pair made off with cash and cigarettes.

Police have described the men as Caucasian, aged in their late-teens to mid-twenties, medium build and between 175cm-185cm tall.

Myths on vitamin D MANY readers will be informed of the importance of vitamin D in bone health, but did you realise this wonderful nutrient is crucial in supporting other body systems?

As a nutritionist and health practitioner, I frequently encounter many children and adults with low vitamin D status.

I’d love to share some simple things you can do to ensure your family has enough of this essential nutrient.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble nutrient synthesised by the action of the sunlight on the skin and found in a range of foods including fish, eggs, milk and sprouted seeds.

Vitamin D exerts a positive action on heart function, muscle strength and blood flow. A good status will ensure your pearly whites are strong and healthy, as vitamin D enhances the mineralisation of teeth.

Vitamin D will also boost your immune system by stimulating T-cell function. Importantly, vitamin D has the ability to keep cancer cells at bay by inducing apoptosis or ‘cell death’.

In practice, we frequently encounter low levels of vitamin D in children and adults who have soft bones, signs of delayed growth (in children), poor immune function and auto-immune conditions.

I am commonly told by patients they spend time outside and don’t know how they can be deficient. So allow me to dispel a few myths about vitamin D. In the Yarra Ranges, you can only absorb vitamin D from sunshine between September and April, because the strength of the rays determines the amount synthesised.

Absorption is also reduced the darker the skin pigmentation and will be blocked completely with sunscreens that are greater than a factor of 8.

If we consider the amount of time

spent indoors, in cars, in prams, the picture becomes more apparent.

Your kidneys and liver must be working well to convert sunlight to active D and being a fat soluble nutrient, low-fat foods will reduce transport and uptake of vitamin D in the body.

Vitamin D is a crucial nutrient needed to keep your body healthy and vital.

Its role in bone density is wellknown, but it also enhances many other body systems and functions.

It has a therapeutic role in all autoimmune conditions, including MS, inflammatory bowel diseases and osteoarthritis, as well as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and certain cancers.

If you are unsure of your status, or about supplementation, it would be wise to get this checked by a health professional.

Here are a few tips to ensure optimal vitamin D exposure: Ensure your diet is rich in healthy fats; Twice daily, spend 20 minutes outside; If you spend much time indoors, consider quality supplementation.

Ruby shines bright at show ST PAUL'S Primary School student, Ruby Malerba, recently competed at the Royal Melbourne Show, placing fifth in her turn-out event.

The event was judged on saddlery, outfit, manners, work-out and conformation.

Ruby, 7, is from Monbulk and her proud mother, Karen, says she and her pony, Kista Park Pirouette, qualified for the Royal Melbourne Show by winning about nine agricultural shows around Victoria.

Ruby also placed fifth in the novice pony, a great achievement against ponies from interstate, and sixth in her rider class.

Karen says Ruby is very proud of her achievements and can’t wait to do all the Royal Shows around Australia.

Paedophile ‘dies in jail’

By PETER DOUGLAS REPORTS emerged last week that paedophile Robert Whitehead had died in prison.

The former Puffing Billy volunteer was sentenced earlier this year to more than eight years in prison over 24 charges of sexual abuse against six boys in the 1970s and 1980s.

The charges included repeated sexual abuse of a then 13-year-old Puffing Billy volunteer.

The Victorian Justice Department told the 'Mail’ they could not confirm if Whitehead had died.

But if the reports are accurate, his death comes after just last week being charged with two more indecent assault charges.

It is alleged this victim was abused in 1982, after meeting the boy while volunteering on the Puffing Billy service.

Steam around Puffing Billy in Emerald. 141581 In sentencing Whitehead in July this year, Judge Michael Tinney told the then 84-year-old Whitehead, “You may very well die in prison”.

“Age does not mitigate a prison term even when there is little possibility of life afterwards,” Judge Tinney said.

“But for your guilty plea, I would give a much more significant prison term.”

Chief Executive Officer of Puffing Billy Railway, John Robinson, previously told the ‘Mail’ there were no records of anyone making allegations about the volunteers at the time.

Mr Robinson said volunteers had been subject to police checks since 2005, and working with children checks since 2007, but there were not checks in place when Whitehead first started volunteering with Puffing Billy.

Sign, barrier for Steps safety

A NEW electronic sign and removable barrier have been installed at the base of the 1000 Steps at the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk to discourage the public from entering the forest on fire risk days.

The Dandenong Ranges National Park is closed for public safety on days of elevated or extreme bushfire risk and high-risk weather events such as damaging winds.

Parks Victoria’s Mat-

thew Hoogland said public safety was a priority.

“We are asking park visitors to always check local weather and conditions before their visit and also to obey the regulatory signs in the park,” he said.

“If there is a major fire or storm event in the Dandenong Ranges National Park, there is not an easy or safe way to rescue members of the public from the park.

“It could be too dangerous for fire crews to reach people in an emergency, so it is safer to close the park.”

He said those who ignored park closures didn’t just put themselves at risk; they also risked the lives of fire and emergency personnel from Parks Victoria, CFA and Victoria Police.

It is an offence to enter a national park when it is closed and fines apply.

A GIGANTIC tree in Monbulk has planted its spot on the National Register of Big Trees as the biggest Mountain White Gum in mainland Australia.

The register records the biggest of every species of tree in Australia.

Trees that are nominated are measured on their circumference, their height and crown.

The 250-year-old tree is located near Old Emerald and Emerald-Monbulk roads, and stands at 67 metres high, with a circumference of 7.5m and a 33m crown.

The tree was nominated to the register by Thomas Bright, a student from NMIT as part of his study, and is the first champion to have been added to the register.

Mr Bright said he found the tree while driving through for work and thought he would submit the nomination.

“When I first looked at it, I was pretty confident that it would win and I’m glad it did,” Mr Bright said.

“I think big trees should be protected.

“Hopefully (the win) will motivate others to acknowledge the trees we have.”

Other trees around the Yarra Ranges that have made it onto the register are in Sassafras and Monbulk.

Co-ordinator of the National Register of Big Trees, Derek McIntosh, said over the years a big tree came up out of the blue.

“This species of tree can get very big, although this one is exceptionally big,” Mr McIntosh said.

This tall leafy gum is a great example of species potential and in good health, according to the National Register of Big Trees.

Discover how SES helps you EMERALD State Emergency Service (SES) will next month open its doors so the public can see what they do and how they help the community.

On Sunday, 4 October, starting at 10am and running until 2pm, SES members will be on hand to show guests the facilities and answer questions regarding staying safe during storm events.

Throughout the day, there will be demonstrations, including a road-rescue scenario, while the newest SES members will show their newly acquired casualty handling skills.

Emerald SES Deputy Controller, Dale Frankland, encouraged the community to get involved.

“As a thankyou to the great community we reside in, a free barbecue will be provided to keep the hunger pangs away,” he said.

Emerald SES is situated off Old Gembrook Road, on the corner of Sheriffs Road and behind Worrel Reserve.

Emerald CFA has an open day on the same day, so it gives locals a chance to see both emergency service facilities.

Opinion Random poling IN THE Southern Health car park in McBride Street, Cockatoo, there is a broken steel pole. It has been there for some time. It appears a couple of unfortunate, unsuspecting drivers parking there have had their bumper bars literally ripped off by this pole – not their fault. Tell that to their insurance companies – it is very expensive.

Said car park comes under the auspices of Cardinia Shire Council. It is about time this broken pole was removed before any more damage can be done.

I did also write about two months ago about the oak tree next door to the Nell Mitchell Op-Shop, same vicinity, that is highly dangerous too when the acorns fall. It makes the footpath slippery. Bit dangerous for the lovely ladies from the shop to put their garbage out.

Hope this will be looked into, as it is serious.

State funds to protect communitites YARRA Ranges Shire is set to receive $240,000 in state funding as part of an initiative to protect communities in emergencies.

From the councils to receive funding, the allocation to the Yarra Ranges is among the largest, with the others

being the Wangaratta, Mansfield and Shepparton regions, which will receive $120,000.

Funded through the Victorian Government’s Municipal Emergency Resourcing Program, $4.6 million will be provided yearly to 64 councils

located within Country Fire Authority districts.

Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, this week said council was a key partner in emergency planning and management.

“With a wealth of local knowledge and strong links to their communities, this funding will support local councils in my electorate to continue their integral role in managing emergency situations,” Ms Symes said.

THE Andrews Labor Government has sent out a press release asking for submissions about early childhood education.

They ask, ‘How do we engage more children in learning earlier?’

Well, for a start, you don’t exclude children who have not been injected with formaldehyde and human DNA. Such hypocrisy.

Perhaps they think that parents who have taken the trouble to find out the facts about vaccination are going to flip over and start allowing their children to be injected with these and other harmful substances so that they can attend government-approved kindergartens.

Illegal kindergartens are springing up all over Victoria.

If the government thinks these kindergartens will not offer as good a quality of early learning as real kindergartens, then they should think of the alternative that they are offering – no early learning.

Rathbone rallies for globe

FERNTREE Gully local Jordan Rathbone, 23, spends his days working as a landscaper, but during his spare time lobbies parliamentarians about sustainability.

Mr Rathbone last weekend drove from Melbourne to Canberra to join a team of RESULTS volunteers to meet with parliamentarians and seek support for Australia endorsing, adopting and resourcing the 17 global goals for sustainable development.

Mr Rathbone said the goals were to be agreed on after the United Nations General Assembly.

“The global goals provide us the opportunity to consign poverty to the history books for good, a prospect that is far too exciting to ignore,” Mr Rathbone said.

The global goals will cover the period from 2015 to 2030 and include goals to end poverty in all its forms.

Mr Rathbone is optimistic the goals can be achieved, but only if they are taken on and properly resourced by all countries, including Australia.

“So far the job is half-done, with the number of people living in extreme poverty halving since 1990,” he said.

“That’s great, but we can’t stop halfway on this.”

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS SILVAN Primary School recently held its biennial billycart derby and boxcar rally with students, parents and even police in attendance.

The event is a day for staff, students and families of the school to see the results of a whole school arts and technology program run over the term.

The students in Prep and Grades 1, 2, and 3 work on their boxcars which ranged this year from racecars to buses and even a police car.

The students in Grade 4 recreated beautiful Australian works of art that are now a permanent fixture of the school’s

art room cupboards.

Students in Grade 5 and 6 had a more involved project where they designed and built billy-carts that they then rode to glory during the events day at the school.

The students started by creating a design for their billy cart in a 1:10 ratio drawing, then proceeded to build those carts from their own designs.

Principal Damian Tirchett said while the projects were a lot of fun for the students, they had also learned some valuable skills.

“In all the areas students cover mathematical skills of measuring, calculating using ratios, grid work, plus design and construction skills,” he said.

“The students constructed their billy-carts completely by themselves. They only had assistance drilling holes into their axles and mounting their wheels with split pins on either side.”

The students' hard work over the last school term paid off when they had the chance to put their creations to the test.

Sergeant Mark Knight and Leading Senior Constable Shane Cross from Monbulk Police Station were on hand with a speed camera to determine whose billy cart reached the fastest speed.

The winner with the fastest speed was Aaron Trewavis, who rolled his cart to an impressive 21km/h down the slope.

Izzy’s fight for life not over

By PETER DOUGLAS AFTER escaping death row earlier this year, Izzy the Staffordshire Terrier is headed to RSPCA South Australia, not home to her owner.

An independent panel has handed down its decision, after Izzy was the subject of legal proceedings related to an attack on a woman.

RSPCA South Australia will determine if the dog is suitable for rehousing.

However, if Izzy is deemed unsuitable, she will be euthanised.

Izzy was the subject of much media coverage in June this year after winning a reprieve from death row, when her owner took Knox City Council to the High Court.

Izzy had been ordered to be destroyed under the dangerous dog legislation, after an attack on a woman which left the victim with a 1.5cm laceration on her middle finger.

The case cost the council $600,000.

Knox Mayor, Peter Lockwood, said the panel’s assessment was comprehensive.

“The decision of the independent

panel has taken all concerns into account and has reflected on an open process, with all information considered,” Cr Lockwood said.

“The panel took into consideration a broad range of information, including the rehabilitation of the dog over the past two years, while being held at the RSPCA.” During panel submissions, the

panel questioned why RSPCA Victoria had not made a similar offer.

The panel heard the Victorian branch was unable to because it was managing an increase in the number of dogs being seized as a result of the focus on closing down puppy farms.

The RSPCA will manage the transfer of the dog to South Australia at their cost.

McLeish rolls out holiday survey

By PETER DOUGLAS EILDON MP Cindy McLeish is the latest politician to speak out against the controversial grand final eve public holiday.

Ms McLeish is gauging public opinion on the holiday after issuing 2000 surveys to businesses in the Eildon electorate.

However, she said early responses indicated resentment.

“Locals have described this holiday as ‘crazy’, ‘ludicrous’ and ‘impossible’,” she said.

“Business owners are telling me the added costs for doing business will force them to close their doors on grand final eve.

“This public holiday will especially hurt casual employees who will be unable to take home pay before the grand final.”

The survey follows the Australian Industry Group’s report on the holiday’s impacts, with the key findings saying businesses in the state could lose as much as $1 billion.

Along with Ms McLeish, the ‘Mail’ has also gauged community sentiment,

with the majority expressing negativity towards the decision.

Through social media channels, support has been scarce.

Kersten Gentle said: “Totally ridiculous. People didn’t vote for this one specific issue. It’s a disgusting attempt for votes as there are more employees than small business. The cost to these businesses and our economy is unnecessary.”

Jacqui Commans said: “It’s costing our interstate transport business $3000.”

Meanwhile, Victorian Deputy Premier and Member for Monbulk, James Merlino, has stood by Premier Daniel Andrews.

“Making Grand Final Friday and Easter Sunday public holidays were longstanding election commitments of the Andrews Labor Government,” he said.

“We took these policies to the election, the Victorian people voted for them and we will deliver them.

“These new public holidays will be good for Victoria because they are good for families.

“If Matthew Guy is so opposed to these public holidays, why won’t the Liberal Party commit to a clear position?”

A BOOK outlining the Italian history of the Yarra Valley and surrounds will be launched this weekend in Silvan.

La Terra Promessa: Italians in the Yarra Valley Before 1945 is a detailed history of the three waves of Italian migration to the Yarra Valley from the 1880s through to the late 1930s.

Author, journalist and historian, Tony de Bolfo, will launch the book with its author and local historian, Anthony McAleer, at the Silvan Public Hall on Silvan-Monbulk Road from 2pm on Sunday, 4 Oc-

tober with a number of guest speakers.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Maria McCarthy and Monbulk MP and Deputy Premier James Merlino, both members of the Italian community, will be two of the speakers at the event.

Mr McAleer interviewed numerous members of the Italian community about migration into the area in three waves.

He said that in the 18801900 period, Italians were brought out to Australia to work on local wineries, while in the 1920s many others came to the area to work on the Sil-

van Dam and O’Shannassy Weir, settling on farms in Silvan and Wandin.

From the 1920s-1930s, those who already lived in the valley encouraged and sponsored family and friends to come to the valley as well.

The book also details the 1940s period, where Australia was at war with Italy, and asks the question of how local Italians reacted to their adopted home being at conflict with their home country.

The title of the book, La Terra Promessa, means “the chosen (or promised) land” in Italian.

Mountains inspire great work

By PETER DOUGLAS LOCAL artist Murray Lancaster will exhibit a selection of his paintings entitled Chomolungma at Arvy’s Gallery, 540 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, Olinda, from now until 14 October.

The word Chomolungma is the Tibetan word for Mount Everest.

In this exhibition, Murray has tried to interpret the different moods of the world’s highest mountain.

He has visited Nepal six times and trekked in many parts of the country, including a trip to Mount Everest base camp.

He said he had long been fascinated by mountains.

“That’s a question that many people may ask as they view my work,” he said.

“On a general level, my interest in mountains is both visual and philosophical.

“Visually, I find mountains endlessly fascinating with their intricate patterns of snow and ice, sharp ridges and serrated skylines.”

Lancaster said Mount Everest had proved a particular attraction.

“I have travelled to Nepal for trekking purposes six times in the last 18 years and in 1999 I walked to just above Mount Everest base camp,” he said.

“This is where my preoccupation started, with documenting the highest peak in the world.

“Reading about mountaineers attempting peaks like Mount Everest has given me an insight into the deprivations one must face in order to reach the summit.

“These are symbols of extreme effort, but along with the courage of climbers, it is inevitable that climbers’ tales also contain stories of greed and selfishness.

Just one example of the many great paintings which focus on Mount Everest.

“Mount Everest has a chequered history in this regard.”

The paintings in oil and acrylic have been completed over the past five years.

The exhibition was officially opened last Sunday.

Opening hours for the gallery are Wednesday to Monday from 10.30am to 5pm.

It is closed on Tuesdays.

Artist Murray Lancaster has completed six treks in Nepal, providing him with much inspiration.

A big night of Australiana

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS MONTROSE Town Centre will come alive with pure Australiana for one night only when Neil Murray and Matt Walker take to the stage on Saturday 10 October.

Neil Murray is best-known for bringing contemporary indigenous music into the fore with the Warumpi Band and is the writer behind Australia’s unofficial anthem, ‘My Island Home’.

A Yarra Ranges local, Matt Walker has earned a global reputation for his creative talents and has been awarded an ARIA award for his work.

He has been credited on countless albums and film scores, even being described by Jeff Lang as “an incredible instrumentalist with a soulful and individual singing style.”

The duo has decided to pair up for a night of music that will include solo and combined performances from both musicians.

They first played together at a gig in Sydney and decided they both liked each other’s styles so much that doing a show together came very naturally.

“We only recently crossed paths when we did a show in Sydney, although I’ve been crossing paths with Neil’s music for 20 years and I’ve been a fan for a while,” Matt Walker said.

“It just seemed like a good thing to do to play more together.”

with Mr Walker and to collaborate on a musical adventure.

“I’m looking forward to spending some time with Matt and I feel he’s one of those musicians to give me a bit of inspiration,” he said.

“You can get a bit stale on your own and it’s great to seek to play with different people and get different input - Matt is that for me.”

This unique collaboration of local icons will see the exploration of quintessential Australian songwriting and musical culture.

While neither musician has said they have plans to record their collaboration, the idea of working together on future projects is not off the table either.

“Playing solo lets me stretch out a bit and having Neil there as well will be great,” Matt Walker said.

“I love his playing - it’ll be great to see what angle he comes from and it’ll definitely be adding to what I’m doing.”

Tickets for the night are available for purchase through the Yarra Ranges Shire Council at $20 for concession and $25 full price.

COMMUNITY groups around the Yarra Ranges will share in more than $300,000 in grants for projects, events and festivals, after funding was approved at last week’s council meeting.

The grants, to be given out under the council’s 2016 Grants for Community Program, were approved unanimously by councillors at a meeting on Tuesday, 22 September.

Some 57 projects across the municipality will share in $322,232 in grants funding, separated into three streams Arts and Heritage Development Grants, Festivals and Events Grants and Community Development Grants.

Festivals and events such as the Mount Evelyn Street Party, the Warburton Film Festival and Healesville Mini Film Festival and Selby Fest were all funded, with $10,000, $3000, and $8000 respectively.

An Arts and Heritage grant worth $10,000 was given to Wandoon Estate Aboriginal Corporation for its project,

grants was moved by Lyster Ward Councillor Mike Clarke and seconded by O’Shannassy Ward Councillor Jim Child.

Cr Child said this year’s round of grants was the best he had seen in his time on council.

“It’s a wonderful outcome,” he said.

“We’ve got some unique community groups out there doing some fantastic work whether it be arts events, festivals or assisting in community projects, I think they need all the assistance they can get.”

The council officer’s report for the meeting stated that $587,223 across 85 projects had been requested by applicants, though only 57 were accepted by an independent panel for each stream of funding.

A grants celebration event will be held at Mooroolbark Community Centre on 12 October, for the successful applicants - the report said the event will also showcase successful projects from the past.

Community Development grants were given out to Dandenong Ranges Community Cafe ($7500), for a Men’s Health Community Forum with the Rotary Club of Monbulk and District ($4000) and for the Yarra Valley Food Network’s new website ($3000).

The website, according to an application form supplied to the Mail, is to develop a website which includes an interactive map and trading platform, for residents to access local and seasonal food.

The form states that users will be able to share information about food and produce they have available, and will allow for a buy, swap or sell to take place.

The project will be auspiced by the Koha Community Cafe with Suyin Chan, the founder of the cafe.

The motion to accept the

ROADS in Coldstream and Monbulk will be updated with more than $1 million in extra federal funding, serving as a stitch in time to prevent problem roads from getting worse.

On Tuesday 22 September, councillors unanimously voted to allocate $1.4 million in funding for works on Coldstream West Road in Coldstream, Gruyere’s Killara Road and Monbulk’s McAllister Road.

According to a council officer’s report for the meeting, the extra funding came from a $1.4 million increase to the council’s Roads to Recovery funding, following the fuel excise.

This funding came in on top of the $3.37 million already allocated to the council for the 2015-’16 financial year - double that of the previous year, and bringing the total funding to $4.81 million.

Coldstream West Road, east of Victoria Road, will have will have $500,000 spent on works, while Killara Road

will have $743,542 spent on it, and McAllister Road, south of Old Emerald Road, will have $200,000 spent on works.

Chandler Ward Councillor Jason Callanan said at the meeting that he was “quite passionate” about improving the council’s roads, and that the allocation took “full advantage” of the extra funds.

“We’re in a unique situation at the moment where our Roads to Recovery funding has been doubled in the next couple of years,” Cr Callanan said.

“We must not forget that a lot, if not most of our funding for roads is via rates - this is an opportunity we have with extra money, to increase and better the standard of our roads within the municipality.”

Killara Road is infamous to some for its poor condition - the Mail reported that then-Coldstream CFA Captain John Fenton warned that if work wasn’t undertaken soon, a fatality could easily occur as drivers negotiated crumbling roads and potholes.

The officer’s report noted that the roads were “requiring regular maintenance”, and that not taking action could mean speed reductions, traffic management or road closures in future.

“Taking action now will avoid possible risk of claims for vehicle damage due to potholes and the like,” the report read.

While the motion to approve the funding was passed unanimously, Lyster Ward Councillor Mike Clarke said in future, council should qualify in their reports why roads were chosen for funding.

“Coldstream West Road and Killara Road are roughly continuations of the same road - that’s like 90 per cent of this budget going on one road,” Cr Clarke said.

While noting that the funding seemed “justifiable”, he said the council should clarify its decision to provide funding for the chosen projects.

Kiara’s a three-peat champ RUNNING her way into more success, Emerald Primary School’s dynamite athlete Kiara Flavel recently became a triple-national cross country champion.

She had to chase down the front-runners, but Flavel, 9, from Emerald, ensured School Sport Victoria would take first place in the two-kilometre Under-10 national cross country race, after a last-ditch dash to take the gold in 8.10 minutes.

“It felt really exciting because I didn’t really expect to get three gold medals,” Flavel said. “I thought I’d come second, but then at the last straight I sprinted and came first.

“I thought that she went too hard at the start so I knew that I would pass her.”

Flavel’s 4x1500m relay team also won on the Monday to round out the success at the championships and she was thrilled to have given her all to help SSV do so well.

“I went really hard for my races and for the team I knew that I could make my team proud,” Flavel said. “

While most of the runners in her age group were born earlier in the year, Flavel is only nine - highlighting just how promising her running can become in the future if she’s knocking off runners at the national level half a year older than her.

With state and national championships from the undulated winter season, Flavel will set her sights on the next athletic achievement.

The Emerald running gem will be athletics season as she hopes to excel in the 800m and her new favourite the 1500m.

“It’s going to be my first time doing the 1500m,” Flavel said. “I think I might get the record because I’m going to try and get it.

“I like short distance and long distance, but my favourite is long-distance. It isn’t just her running where Flavel is doing well, as she’s also well into her swimming and karate - having earned a mascot brown belt, black tip in her martial art.

She wanted to thank her coach Brendan Dixon and her family for their support.

MEMBERS poured into the carpark at Emerald Golf Club because all golfers like to play when the conditions are good and their umbrellas are ballast.

It was a stableford event on the menu, and when all the cards arrived back at the tuck shop, carried by golfers in various states of disrepair, it was discovered that two players amassed 38 points.

The bean counters of a usually benevolent class managed to separate the two, with Philip Crossley (21) holding sway over Steve Town (12).

Town won the bikkies in A Grade and Crossley emptied the tray in B Grade.

Town was nearest the pin on the 4th, Peter Glasscock the 7th, Ken Hill the 12th, Peter Clowes the 13th and Ben Balfour pocketed the pro pin lolly on the 18th.

A good roll-up of ladies fought out the stableford event, but in the end, none could match the steady performance of Brodie Reynolds who played winner’s golf when it was needed.

A couple of games were played in the match play club championship with Ken Hill beating Peter Glasscock 3/2 and Ian Scott triumphant over Graham White 1 up.

Wednesday’s Overly Fatheaded Golf (OFG) was a stableford event that made Gerran Wright (30) smile; the annoying smile of a winner when he came in first with 43 points.

Jeffrey Marsh (25) was next with 42, Moss Fuller (25) with 40, Sepp Krummenacher (21) on 38 and Ben Balfour (21) and Graham White (18) both with 37.

Next Saturday was to be the first round of the three-round club championship, but trying to get the AFL grand final shifted was not successful.

Next week will be a stableford event and the club championship will start the following week.

There were objections from the supporters of some AFL teams as they thought the season had ended a few weeks ago.

Cycling’s new talent to the fore

Jemma Eastwood says the sport of cycling has brought out her competitive nature.

JUST four weeks after competing in her first cycling competition, Jemma Eastwood, 15, last week took out the Victorian Under 17 Road Race Champion’s title.

In an amazing display of natural talent, Eastwood blitzed her rivals in one of the country’s most prestigious junior cycling events.

The Belgrave teenager’s journey began after she finished the Great Victorian Bike Ride in 2013 with Mater Christi College, when she became hooked on cycling.

The Year 10 student has continued to ride and even created a school project around her passion.

“I developed a training program for my Personal Project at school, and I knew my riding was getting stronger,” Eastwood said.

But it was the thrill of competing that enticed her into racing, and she joined the Blackburn Cycling Club with her father.

“Competitions are really exciting and bring out my best,” Eastwood said.

Since her surprise victory in the Victorian Championships, Eastwood has represented Victoria in the national titles and is gaining more racing experience.

Her talents are not limited to cycling.

She is an accomplished runner, studies violin and piano, and is a member of the Mater bellas a capella group at Mater Christi.

“I have lots of interests and opportunities, and I really enjoy studying science,” she said.

Hawks primed for openers WITH the local football season over, it means cricket for the Monbulk Hawks is not far away.

The committee has worked hard over the winter to prepare what is shaping up as another exciting season ahead.

Four senior teams have been entered into the Ferntree Gully District Cricket Association.

The club has welcomed back former premiership star Chris Coen and junior sensation Brodie Emmett, who has honed his skills at district club Ringwood for the past three seasons.

The club will again be coached by Shane Cosstick and assisted by Aaron Powell.

With an influx of other local players and last year’s Under 17s team all pushing up into the seniors, all four senior teams will be competitive this season after a good pre-season.

The 1st XI take on Eildon Park at home in round one on Saturday 10 October.

The junior teams are also looking strong, with record registrations at this stage of the season.

The club has entered teams in Under 10s, 11s, 12s (two teams), 14s and 16s.

Last week, the club held their annual ‘Stuart Lever Junior Development Clinic’ at Lilydale Saxon Sports.

This was well attended, and all the kids there received their new playing shirts for the season.

cessful Milo in2Cricket program will also be back with registration day on Friday 16 October, 5.30pm at Monbulk Cricket clubrooms.

Ranges’ dream run ends after taking on so many well-fancied opponents

Despite finishing the season in fifth position, the Ranges played some scintillating football to reach the grand final, after accounting for highly fancied outfits Dandenong Stingrays, Geelong Falcons and Calder Cannons.

Unfortunately for the Ranges, it was more of the same in the premier Under 18s competition, as Oakleigh Chargers triumphed by

just 12 points to collect its third premiership in just four years.

However, it was a gallant effort from the Ranges players, who pushed the Chargers right until the final quarter.

Among the better players for the Ranges was forward Jayden Stephenson, who kept the Ranges in touch through booting three goals.

The haul brought his goal tally to 10 for the finals series.

Running defender Anthony Brolic also put in an eye-catching display.

Heading into the decider, Ranges midfield star Ryan Clarke had been in white-hot form and was one of the prime reasons for the charge to the grand final.

However, the onballer was quiet by his standards, compiling just 18 touches.

For the Chargers, Kade Answerth won the TAC Medal as best on ground after gathering 30 disposals, in a display that would have caught the attention of AFL recruiters.

Cunningham.
