THE Yarra Junction icon affectionately known as the ‘purple church’ is set to undergo another valuable redevelopment.

Presently facilitating the fantastic work of EACH Social and Community Health, a redevelopment of the building has been confirmed as Victorian Minister for Mental Health, Martin Foley, announced $500,000 for the project.

The centre provides many community-based programs, including mental health recovery, financial counselling and gamblers’ help services.

Thanks to the State Government funds, redevelopment of the site will allow for an increase in services, including alcohol and drug counselling services.

The project will include the creation of two additional counselling rooms and increased consumer service space; including a dedicated reception and waiting area, a large meeting/training room, open-plan staff workstations, and three offices for co-location of complementary services.

At the announcement, Mr Foley joined attendees including Eildon MP Cindy McLeish, Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Maria McCarthy; and representatives from Anglicare Victoria, Youth Support and Advocacy Services, and EACH’s board and staff.

Mr Foley said the funds would help the community immensely.

“This capital funding will support EACH’s mental health service to improve their facilities for consumers, carers and staff; and drive innovation such as colocation with other organisations,” he said.

“The government is committed to providing a world-leading service system for Victorians experiencing serious mental illness.”

Lesley Tarves, Director of Strategic Assets and Property Development (EACH), said the redevelopment work was vital.

“It’s about bringing the whole complex up to standard, then bringing more services,” she said.

“EACH provides a range of holistic services, it’s not just about mental health.”

Ms Tarves said the project took two years from conception to get to the funding announcement, saying the Yarra Ranges Shire had been extremely supportive.

She also noted demand for the art room was hugely popular and couldn’t wait to see the redevelopment completed.

A FREE swim and activities for young and old will be on offer next weekend at Healesville’s indoor pool, as it opens its doors for the day.

The Jack Hort Memorial Indoor Swimming Pool in Healesville will throw open the doors from 10am-4pm on Sunday 11 October, for an open day.

Visitors will be able to swim for free all day and take part in free aqua aerobics sessions and infant aquatic lessons.

Pool manager Ross Ilsley said the event was a chance to promote the venue after last year’s uncertainty over the pool’s future, which was staved off with a funding agreement between the management of the pool, Healesville High School and the Yarra Ranges Council.

Before the agreement was reached, the pool had drastically cut down its opening hours - now, the hours have been restored to include mornings, nights and Saturdays.

“What we’re trying to do is promote ourselves - that we’re still here, that we still intend to be here when the new pool is built,” he said.

Mr Ilsley said that bookings were essential for aqua aerobics and infant aquatics sessions, and that children’s activities would be held from 2-4pm

Briefly Teen tagger faces court A YARRA Junction teenager will face court over criminal damage to the Upper Yarra Secondary College building committed earlier this month.

Overnight between Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 September, the school campus on Little Yarra Road in Yarra Junction was broken into and roughly $7000 in damage was caused to the building.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said police arrested a 19-year-old Yarra Junction man, charging the teenager with criminal damage.

He was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 16 February, 2016.

A 16-year-old girl was given a caution in relation to the incident.

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS LILIAN Pagles, 15, will this week be the first junior firefighter from District 13 to represent her CFA brigade in the Australian National Fire Cadet Championships.

Miss Pagles was selected over two other applicants in her district and will compete against 17 of her peers in the championships at Myuna Bay in New South Wales.

Currently in Year 9, Miss Pagles has been a member of the Hoddles Creek CFA since she was 11 years old, and says it was a natural step for her to join the brigade.

“My dad was a CFA member, my sister used to do it, and so did a good family friend,” Miss Pagles said. “One day when I was 11 and I was the right age to join I just did it. I fit in really easily and it was really fun."

Miss Pagles will compete against other junior firefighters from across the country over two days with an opening ceremony, awards presentation and closing ceremony, all lined up.

The official competition will include events and activities like emergency drills such as drafting, rolling out hoses, a portable pump relay, station response and knapsack drill, and tank and ladder challenge.

Miss Pagles said she was very excited to be competing at the championships.

“It’s pretty amazing,” she said.

“We’ve never had somebody been selected from (District 13) before, and I count myself really lucky.”

Flag stolen, flagpole damaged

Acting executive director of Operational Training and Volunteerism Kate Harrap said the championships were a great way for young CFA members to develop valuable skills.

“The championships give participants the op-

portunity to further develop their practical, social and leadership skills,” she said.

Ms Harrap said the event also helped promote the importance of cadet firefighters and youth volunteers to the wider community.

“CFA is one of the world’s largest volunteerbased emergency services organisations, and our young members are vital for our future,” she said.

“It’s hoped the championships will inspire others to join the juniors program.”

Police probe burn-outs YARRA Glen police are searching for the driver of a black Holden ute, seen doing burn-outs in Dixons Creek earlier this month.

Police, posting on the Eyewatch Yarra Ranges Police Service Area Facebook page, said it was believed the burn-outs occurred at the intersection of Melba Highway and Bottings Lane in Dixons Creek at 5.45pm on Sunday 20 September.

Police believe a black, late-model Holden ute was doing the burn-outs, and are asking for witnesses to contact Yarra Glen Police Sergeant Richard Coulson on 9730 1296.

Apprentices bask in night of honour

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS APPRENTICES and trainees from all over the Yarra Ranges were honoured last week with awards at the 2015 Casey Apprentice/Trainee Awards held at Chateau Yering in Yarra Glen.

Finalists apprentices and trainees were accompanied by about 100 of their peers, employers, family and friends on Tuesday 22 September for the awards ceremony.

Presented by Casey MP Tony Smith, the awards recognise the passion and achievements of both young and mature apprentices in the community.

“Recognising and rewarding excellence across our trades is very important, not just for those within the trades, but for our economy as well,” he said.

The awards ceremony honoured the best and brightest of apprentices and trainees from around the Casey area with certificates and recognition from peers and business leaders.

Steven’s Glass proprietor Nick Fraraccio, who is one of the committe members who selects the winners, said the awards were great for the esteem of trainees.

“Being involved with young people and encouraging them to come into the workforce is very important,” he said.

Sue O’Brien, the general manger of Chateau Yering and also a committee member, said the awards were a great asset to the drive of trainees.

“It’s fantastic to be involved with young people who are passionate and work hard,” she said.

“I also love that there are mature apprentices as well, it’s really great to recognise them too because they often get looked over.”

There were two overall winners on the night - Elizabeth Lilburn from Mount Evelyn took out the top prize in the young age group and Adrian George from Elecorp in Monbulk won the mature trainee award.

Mr George said winning the award as a mature aged apprentice really meant a lot as older apprentices could get a raw deal when it came to awards like this.

“It’s great having that recognition,” he said.

“I’m so pleased to have an employer that gave me a go.”

POLICE are calling for information after the Woori Yallock Township Advancement Group (WYTAG) flag was stolen from the WYTAG Reserve earlier this month.

Police, posting on the Eyewatch Yarra Ranges Police Service Area Facebook page, said the flag was stolen from the flagpole on Thursday 16 September, with the flagpole also damaged in the incident.

“This is really disappointing as the Woori Yallock Township Group have worked hard to make this area a nice place for the community,” the post read.

“I love (my co-workers) like a family, and I’m so encouraged and proud.”

Mr Smith said the selection committee had a really hard time choosing the winners from the massive number of nominations they received this year.

“The committee had an immensely tough job this year, choosing the winners and runners-up there was just such a high calibre of finalists,” he said.

“I extend a big congratulations to everyone to the apprentices and trainees, to the employers who supported them, and to the families - they should be very proud of their achievements.”

A BIRD-LOVING thief is being hunted by police after stealing more than 15 birds last week from Lilydale.

Yarra Ranges police officers posting on the Eyewatch Yarra Ranges Police Service Area Facebook page said that overnight on Wednesday 23 September, 15 canaries and an Amazonian blue cap parrot were stolen from Lilydale.

The parrot does not have a name, but is able to say “Hello” and “What do you want?”

“The owners are very upset,” the Facebook post read.

Myths on vitamin D face exposure Healthy

In practice, we frequently encounter low levels of vitamin D in children and adults who have soft bones, signs of delayed growth (in children), poor immune function and auto-immune conditions.

I am commonly told by patients they spend time outside and don’t know how they can be deficient. So allow me to dispel a few myths about vitamin D. THE MURRINDINDI Council has moved to reassure residents that misprinted Ratepayer ID tags will still be accepted at tips, despite having the wrong dates on them.

The council sent out a media release on Thursday 10 September about the ID tags, which were recently distributed across the municipality.

Of the roughly 10,000 tags made up, 340 were printed with the incorrect validity dates - the tags should read 2016-2019, but the misprints read 2017-2019.

“Their survival rate has increased substantially,” she said.

“The birds had a 45 per cent survival rate before we introduced this training program, but over the last two years that rate has increased to 90 per cent survivability.”

Along with the training program, DELWP and FOHEHO have spent years replanting natural vegetation in the conservation reserve and monitoring the wild birds.

“We do a lot habitat monitoring and use climate models to select the best site to release the birds,” James Frazer of FOHEHO said.

“Selecting the right spot is vital and makes quite a significant difference,” he said.

“We released 12 birds in 2013, and 12 months later there were still 11 left, only half of those were predator trained.”

DELWP’s main role is to ensure the ongoing survival of the birds in the wild, and is overseen by senior ornithologist Bruce Quinn.

“Basically, we want to save this bird,” Mr Quinn said.

“We’ll be working hard to provide the habitat these young honeyeaters need to survive day-to-day in the wild, and to monitor their health to allow for breeding in the wild.”

Mr Quinn has been working with helmeted honeyeaters for over 20 years, and says he is very pleased to work alongside the other groups.

“It’s wonderful to work with so many wonderful people and to learn from them as well,” he said.

YARRA Valley Water has blamed a recent Healesville sewage spill on a “fatberg” of wet wipes clogging the system, and has called on residents to be smarter when they flush.

In a release sent out on Tuesday 22 September, YV Water’s managing director Pat McCafferty said that a sewage spill took place at the corner of Don Road and Mt Riddell Road in Healesville on Friday 18 September.

Mr McCafferty said a quick response from the organisation “narrowly” stopped spilling sewage from reaching the Watts River.

“We responded quickly and started the clean up as soon as it was safe to do so, and we expect the water quality in the local wetlands to return to normal shortly,” he said.

He blamed the spill on wet wipes, fats and oils flushed or washed down sinks building up, forming a “fatberg” and getting caught on tree roots in the sewer, and said the objects “do not belong there”.

“We need the community to help stop this problem, as things such as wet wipes can cause blockages in our sewers,” Mr McCafferty said.

“As you can imagine, fats and oils also block the pipes and only add to the problem we are seeing with wet wipes by

The Mail reported in March that Yarra Valley water had been dealing with the headache of so-called “flushable” wipes for years, with four tonnes of the wipes removed from the sewerage system every fortnight on average.

Though the wipes are marked as “flushable”, Mr McCafferty said they didn’t disintegrate like toilet paper, and could easily cause blockages and spills in the sewer network.

Cleaning those blockages up can cost up to $1000 each time, and the material can result in spills, such as the one that oc-

curred in Healesville.

“Our sewers were not designed for wet wipes,” Mr McCafferty said.

“Just because something says it’s ‘flushable’ doesn’t mean it should be flushed.”

While Yarra Valley Water has installed machinery in treatment plants to deal with wet wipes, blockages often occur elsewhere in the process, and Mr McCafferty said not flushing the wrong things was the key.

ZOOS Victoria last week released a new batch of helmeted honeyeaters into the wild at a nature conservation reserve in Yellingbo.

The critically endangered bird is the state emblem of Victoria and various conservation groups have been working tirelessly to preserve and increase the wild population of the bird.

When the helmeted honeyeater population conservation program in Yellingbo began in 1989, the bird population was around 50 wild birds.

After the release of 18 new birds into the conservation reserve last week, the wild population has risen to 150 birds, each with an identifying ankle band for monitoring.

The increase in population is thanks to tireless efforts from volunteer group the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater (FOHEHO), the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), Parks Victoria and Healesville Sanctuary.

Healesville Sanctuary had bred the birds in captivity in preparation for release over the last 12 months, including teaching them about predator danger in increase survival rates.

The program trains the helmeted honeyeaters to recognise and hide from natural predators such as goshawks to give them a better chance of survival on the wild.

Obituary Many Warburton district residents were grieved to learn of the death of Mrs Aster Mavis Tonkin of Big Pat’s Creek, last week.

Mrs Tonkin came to Big Pat’s Creek with her husband and three teenage children three years ago, from Kalorama. During these past three years, Mrs Tonkin has helped her husband develop a successful bulb-growing business.

The Yarra Junction Junior Cricket Club has been running now since 1964, during that time many premierships have been won throughout grades 12’s, 14’s and 16’s.

The club is full of friendly, family orientated members that love playing the sport, as much as they love attending the many family functions that the club holds throughout the season.

The Opposition has identified a number of increases well above CPI which means the Andrews Government has broken a promise.

The Andrews Government promised to keep the FSL to increases in state taxes and CPI or below.

Labor’s first budget this year showed that they intended to increase statewide FSL collections by 7.2 per cent, costing Victorians an additional $42 million.

However, actual increases after people have compared their rates notices show that the increase is more than 10 per cent.

Yet the government remains silent, hoping you won’t notice.

Under the former Coalition Government the FSL was changed from an expensive insurance-based tax to a fairer property-based tax that meant all landowners contributed to the cost of supporting our fire services.

Don’t let the Andrews Government get away with it.

As we arrive at Lilydale Station, the 6.05 bus leaves the station terminus, stranding passengers in a winter setting.

Surely a bus a little late is far better than a bus a little early.

Then, strangely the next Healesville bus, the 6.45, arrives 20 minutes early.

There seems to be a space-time continuum that relates not to matter, but to chaos, in the public transport system.

Fyffe wants faster moves on quarry

THE YARRA Ranges Council may end its Family Day Care (FDC) scheme a year after saving the program, citing “rising costs” behind the potential closure.

Councillors will debate ending the FDC scheme on Tuesday, 13 October, 15 months after deciding to keep the service running across the municipality.

Citing rising costs and unsuccessful attempts to recruit educators in a release on Friday, 25 September, the council said it had concerns for the future of the program.

The release also stated the “strong potential” for the scheme to shrink further and lose Federal Government funding as reasons for bringing the topic of closure back to the table.

Director of Social and Economic Development Ali Wastie said that although the council had tried to achieve neutral costs for the service, it had been “significantly subsidising the scheme for years”.

“The scheme currently costs council more than $130,000, which is unsustainable when you consider it provides for three per cent of families with children aged 1-4 years in the Yarra Ranges,” Ms Wastie said.

She said that, for the scheme to continue into the 2016-’17 financial year, fees would need to rise “significantly” to make it costneutral.

“We are concerned of the impact this would have on families.”

She said the scheme provided day care “of a high quality”, but said other FDC schemes provided “a good level of service” and were more sustainable.

Ms Wastie said that if the FDC scheme ended, the council’s Family and Children’s Services Department would help to “transition” educators to new providers.

The move to end the scheme comes 15 months after councillors knocked back a similar proposal.

EVELYN MP Christine Fyffe has called on the Yarra Ranges Council to hurry along a Planning Scheme Amendment for the Lilydale Quarry, which could bring more than 2000 new houses to the area.

Ms Fyffe said she wanted the council to “expedite” a planning scheme amendment for the quarry, which is owned by Sibelco, for the quarry’s redevelopment.

The redevelopment will feature 2300-2500 dwellings, a small retail centre, mixed-use areas, public spaces and road and trail networks at the site where the quarry currently sits.

Sibelco submitted its redevelopment proposal to the council in July, outlining the details of the 20year development that the council’s Director of Planning, Building and Health, Andrew Paxton, described as “one of the largest and most significant redevelopment opportunities in the eastern region of Melbourne”.

“I’m calling on council not to procrastinate, to expedite it ... so that the next steps can go into place,” Ms Fyffe said.

“The quicker this happens, the more jobs it’s going to mean for this region and the more houses.

cillors voted six to three to keep the service running, after more than an hour of fierce debate.

Then councillor, Samantha Dunn, opposed ending the scheme, and accused the council at the time of setting the scheme up to fail by not actively recruiting educators.

The public gallery at the meeting was full of FDC families and educators, who cheered and applauded when the motion to end the scheme was lost.

Councillors Fiona McAllister, Len Cox, Noel Cliff, Samantha Dunn, Andy Witlox and Jason Callanan all voted against closing the service last year, while councillors Jim Child, Terry Avery and Maria McCarthy voted in favour.

Ms Dunn told the Mail on Friday that the level of service - not its price - should be the most important issue for council.

“The reality is that local government doesn’t operate in a cost-neutral environment, that’s why they charge rates,“ she said.

“That’s the whole point - it helps pay for services.

“If there’s been federal funding cuts, that’s incredibly disappointing because of the impacts on families, but I don’t think,

ever in my time in local government, I was a fan of cost neutrality being the benchmark as to whether your provide services or don’t.“ Following last year’s decision, the Mail reported that the scheme serviced 156 families through 21 educators.

Though Ms Wastie said there were now 197 families and 24 educators in the council's scheme, the increase was "not significant enough" to "improve the outlook for our scheme into the future", with one educator retiring recently and another due to retire in December.

"Even if the current number of educators and families was to remain constant, our fees would still need to rise significantly to make the scheme sustainable," she said.

In Friday’s release, Ms Wastie said that a failure to recruit educators was one of the causes of concern, bringing the discussion back to council.

Ms Dunn said she would attend the 13 October meeting if possible.

The council said its report on the matter will be published online at www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au from 7 October, with the council set to discuss the matter on Tuesday, 13 October.

Sibelco has begun a public tender campaign, to find someone to purchase and develop the site as the quarry operations end in coming years. Mr Paxton said the council was “currently considering” the application, liaising with the government, VicRoads and other agencies to work out the details of the redevelopment.

“The proposed development will increase demand on local roads and other community infrastructure,” he said.

“We are also waiting to receive the Minister’s advice regarding access to Lilydale from the Sibelco site through Swinburne council raised this issue with the State Government in 2014.”

The quarry site development has been in the works for years, through the Plan Cave Hill project which has spurred public meetings and discussions with council and the state government. Sibelco said that, following council’s review of the application, the community would likely have the chance to review and provide comments on the master plan later in the year.

$1 million major road upgrades

By JESSE GRAHAM ROADS in Coldstream and Monbulk will be updated with more than $1 million in extra federal funding, serving as a stitch in time to prevent problem roads from getting worse.

On Tuesday 22 September, councillors unanimously voted to allocate $1.4 million in funding for works on Coldstream West Road in Coldstream, Gruyere’s Killara Road and Monbulk’s McAllister Road.

According to a council officer’s report for the meeting, the extra funding came from a $1.4 million increase to the council’s Roads to Recovery funding, following the fuel excise.

This funding came in on top of the $3.37 million already allocated to the council for the 2015-’16 financial year - double that of the previous year, and bringing the total funding to $4.81 million.

Coldstream West Road, east of Victoria Road, will have will have $500,000 spent on works, while Killara Road will have $743,542 spent on it,

and McAllister Road, south of Old Emerald Road, will have $200,000 spent on works.

Chandler Ward Councillor Jason Callanan said at the meeting that he was “quite passionate” about improving the council’s roads, and that the allocation took “full advantage” of the extra funds.

“We’re in a unique situation at the moment where our Roads to Recovery funding has been doubled in the next couple of years,” Cr Callanan said.

“We must not forget that a lot, if not most of our funding for roads is via rates - this is an opportunity we have with extra money, to increase and better the standard of our roads within the municipality.”

Killara Road is infamous to some for its poor condition - the Mail reported that thenColdstream CFA Captain John Fenton warned that if work wasn’t undertaken soon, a fatality could easily occur as drivers negotiated crumbling roads and potholes.

The officer’s report noted

that the roads were “requiring regular maintenance”, and that not taking action could mean speed reductions, traffic management or road closures in future.

“Taking action now will avoid possible risk of claims for vehicle damage due to potholes and the like,” the report read.

While the motion to approve the funding was passed unanimously, Lyster Ward Councillor Mike Clarke said in future, council should qualify in their reports why roads were chosen for funding.

“Coldstream West Road and Killara Road are roughly continuations of the same road - that’s like 90 per cent of this budget going on one road,” Cr Clarke said.

Vandals in smashing time at bus shelter

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS WARBURTON Police are searching for serial vandals who have been targeting a particular bus shelter in Millgrove.

The bus shelter on the corner of Warburton Highway and McKenzie King Drive has had its glass smashed multiple times this year already.

Millgrove Resident Maurice Scott is very unhappy that nothing has been done to prevent the bus shelter glass from being smashed time and again.

“It’s been a target for vandalism seven times this year and the glass keeps being replaced,” he said.

“I have seen elderly people up to 90 years old have to stand there because they can’t sit in it to use the shelter, because some thug seems to think it’s a thrill to smash it.”

Leading Senior Constable Tony Pagles of Warburton Police said this kind of behaviour just wasn't acceptable.

“The shelter does seem to have the glass smashed on it more frequently than others in the area,” he said.

“While it’s Adshel’s responsibility to repair the damage, it’s still damage to public and private property - always looking to prosecute people for that.”

“I’m worried about it looking terrible as well, as elderly people can’t use it properly and they shouldn’t have to stand,” he said.

“I don’t know who vandals are but it needs to be followed up before someone gets hurt.”

LSC Pagles said the message police wanted to send

to the vandals was that they wouldn’t like someone to damage their property in any way and it was not acceptable.

“I don’t know what the attraction is to that particular stop,” LSC Pagles said.

The company that owns the shelter, Adshel, were contacted for comment but The Mail did not receive a reply.

That Cuban feeling gets toes tapping

By JODIE SYMONDS THIS year’s Annual Cuban Jazz Festival at Rochford Winery will be packed with high-energy, with The Potbelleez set to rock the main stage.

The 2015 event, on Saturday, 24 October, will be in its 12th year, and Rochford has planned it to bigger and better than ever with loads of live music, a large array of food, and of course, wine.

Gates will open at 11am, and there will be four music stages for visitors to work their way around, each with a different vibe to suit revellers.

Cuban band Carlito’s Way will be performing their authentic Cuban music to dance to, as well as DJ Santigo Son bringing commercial house to the festival.

Visitors will also get the chance to learn salsa dancing on behalf of Melbourne Salsa.

The Potbelleez are an Australian electro-house music group that formed in 2003 and are expected to rock the main stage with favourites such as Are You With Me, Don’t Hold Back and From the Music.

The night is set to wrap up at 6pm, and buses are available to transport visitors to and from

This suggests a high level of authenticity in Everest’s retelling of his harrowing experience.

NOTICE TO CHANGE Diamond Creek Stream Flow Management Plan Melbourne Water is seeking feedback on the proposal to abolish the Diamond Creek Water Supply Protection Area and revoke the Stream Flow Management Plan currently managed under the Water Act 1989.

The intent is to replace the current Streamflow Management Plan with a Local Management Plan.

The Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water has agreed to accept feedback on this change. Feedback is also sought on the replacement Diamond Creek Local Management Plan which would be managed by Melbourne Water.

Diamond Creek sustains a range of agricultural activities and provides important habitat for significant flora and fauna, including platypus and blackfish.

The Local Management Plan would continue to ensure the protection of rights for water users accessing water in the catchment for agricultural, commercial, domestic and stock use, along with providing the necessary water flows to maintain a healthy waterway.

EILDON MP Cindy McLeish is the latest politician to speak out against the controversial grand final eve public holiday.

Ms McLeish is gauging public opinion on the holiday after issuing 2000 surveys to businesses in the Eildon electorate.

However, she said early responses indicated resentment.

“Locals have described this holiday as ‘crazy’, ‘ludicrous’ and ‘impossible’,” she said.

“Business owners are telling me the added costs for doing business will force them to close their doors on grand final eve.

“This public holiday will especially hurt casual employees who will be unable to take home pay before the grand final.”

The survey follows the Australian Industry Group’s report on the holiday’s impacts, with the key findings saying businesses in the state could lose as much as $1 billion.

Along with Ms McLeish, the ‘Mail’ has also gauged community sentiment, with the majority expressing negativity towards the decision.

Through social media channels, support has been scarce.

Kersten Gentle said: “Totally ridiculous. People didn’t vote for this one specific issue. It’s a disgusting attempt for votes as there are more employees than small business. The cost to these businesses and our economy is unnecessary.”

Jacqui Commans said: “It’s costing our interstate transport business $3000.”

Meanwhile, Victorian Deputy Premier and Member for Monbulk, James Merlino, has stood by Premier Daniel Andrews.

“Making Grand Final Friday and Easter Sunday public holidays were long-standing election commitments of the Andrews Labor Government,” he said.

“We took these policies to the election, the Victorian people voted for them and we will deliver them.

“These new public holidays will be good for Victoria because they are good for families.

“If Matthew Guy is so opposed to these public holidays, why won’t the Liberal Party commit to a clear position?”

Fresh wheels for hills

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE Yarra Valley will be host to a new cycling event this November, when the inaugural Giro Della Donna Gran Fondo comes to Warburton.

The race begins in the centre of Warburton and encompasses over 107 kilometres of closed and traffic-managed roads before finishing at the summit of Mount Donna Buang.

The route begins in Warburton with cyclists heading through the bush towards Reefton and continuing up the Warburton-Woods Point Road.

Cyclists will make the trek all the way up to Marysville before returning south down Marysville Road and on to Acheron Way before they start the gruelling climb up the mountain.

The event is created and owned by Cycling Tips, an

Australian cycling website that hosts events and news about all kinds of cycling through Australia.

The Giro Della Donna is being made possible though delivery agency Limelight Sports who have worked with companies such as Red

Bull, Nike, and the Olivia Newton John Foundation.

THE weather at the Woods Point Gun Club for the September King of the Mountain championships was ideal.

The eye opener saw 11 shooters return to the clubhouse with perfect scores: Ian Findlay, Jason Matthews, Trevor Ewert, Ron Press, Phillip Desmond, Darren Clark, Ken Skinner, Mick Ward, Peter West, John Wood and Jim West.

The shared cash prize was sliced pretty thin.

The first of the championships was 20 targets Single Barrel with Geoff Hill and Jason Matthews posting 20/20 on the scoreboard; Hill winning the sash after a short shoot off.

The winners were: AA Grade - Matthews 20/20, Desmond 19/20; A Grade Hill 20/20, Clark 17/20. B Grade - P. West 19/20, Byran Foley 18/20 and in C Grade Michael Bevis 15/20 was 1st from Max Cleland 14/20.

By PETER DOUGLAS THREE Bridges local Daniel Sanders is feeling on top of the world after this month winning the coveted 2015 FIM International Six Day Enduro in Slovakia.

Sanders, 21, won the E3 class, in one of the most prestigious motorcycle events in the world, over Frenchman Mathias Bellino and Oscar Balletti from Italy.

Affectionately known as ‘Chucky’, the KTM Enduro Racing Team rider also won the World Junior Trophy with fellow Australians Tye Simmonds, Tom Mason and Broc Grabham, beating Sweden and Italy to first place.

“The feeling has sunk in now and it’s just incredible,” Sanders said.

“I’m rapt with how things turned out.

“From the first day, we realised we were the fastest team out there and that we could win the Junior World trophy if we just stayed on two wheels and finished strongly every day.

“In my class, I got into the lead on day two and kept pulling a bigger and bigger gap.”

Sanders said to come home as the fourth best enduro rider in the world was a special feeling.

“After crossing the finish-line on the last day, my old man jumped the fence and celebrated with me,” he said.

“It felt really good to have my family there.”

Australia also led the senior World Trophy for four days before being controversially relegated to second-place by the French, which was still Australia’s best overall finish ever.

Sanders last weekend returned home to compete in the final rounds of the 2015 Yamaha Victorian OffRoad Championship at Penshurst, just outside of Hamilton.

He leads the Pro Class by 44 points over ISDE teammate Tom Mason.

Sanders returns to Europe to compete in the final round of the 2015 MAXXIS FIM World Enduro Championships in France from 3-4 October.

EASTERN Ranges came agonisingly close to completing a fairytale finals series on Sunday in the TAC Cup. Despite finishing the season in fifth position, the Ranges played some scintillating football to reach the grand final, after accounting for highly fancied outfits Dandenong Stingrays, Geelong Falcons and Calder Cannons.

Under 18s competition, as Oakleigh Chargers triumphed by just 12 points to collect its third premiership in just four years.

However, it was a gallant effort from the Ranges players, who pushed the Chargers right until the final quarter.

Among the better players for the Ranges was forward Jayden Stephenson, who kept the Ranges in touch through booting three goals.

The haul brought his goal tally to 10 for the finals series.

HEALESVILLE footballer Dale Senior was the toast of the Dandenong Ranges Junior Football League, when he won the Under 16s league best and fairest for 2015.

Senior started his football at the Healesville Junior Football Club in 2008 at Under 10s and has continued to play at the club for the past eight years, playing in over 160 games during his junior career.

Coach Darren Wilde was pleased with Senior’s season and “was happy to see all Dale’s hard work recognised”.

Senior played all 15 games in 2015 and was the team’s leading goal scorer with 50 goals.

Although pleased with his personal achievement, Senior said he “would have liked to see his team progress further in the finals.”

To top of his season, Senior was also a member of the triumphant Healesville Under 18s team this season, where he was one of the best on ground during the grand final.

The club congratulated Senior on his success and are looking forward to him continuing, as he transitions fully to senior football next year.”
