Cup clean-sweep By DAVID NAGEL IT WAS clearly the biggest day in the history of the Berwick Football Club. A clean-sweep of all four premiership cups sent the club into frenzy; the breaking of a 16-year senior premiership drought against Cranbourne just one of the storylines that makes this an unbelievable achievement. Here’s a stat ... 88 players, plus many more support staff, received premiership medals for Berwick. That’s a lot of very happy people! It’s fair to say though that, until Saturday, the Berwick Football Club had a long and tough year. Past-player and assistant-coach Todd Devine's 15-year-old son Ethan lost his life-long battle with illness in May, while the death of past-great and well-respected life member John Callery also hit the club hard. But for skipper Madi Andrews it was the passing of past-president Jim Hower that started the club on this journey to success. “When I first started we were at rock-bottom, we had no money ... we had nothing. I think the passing of Jimmy Hower, he was well-respected, that was the trigger for a lot of our parents to step in, and they just turned things around.” As for senior coach Rhys Nisbet, he joins his dad Darryl (1977-'78) as a Berwick premiership coach and can see the opportunity ahead to claim more. “We did create history today but we want to make this the start of something special.” The Narre Warren Netball Club also created history, winning its first ever A Grade title. The Magpies’ netballers left their co-coach Jade Heinrich almost speechless after producing the most sustained display of quality netball for the season in its 59-34 victory over Hampton Park. “It’s hard to describe in words, to work so hard and then to play our best game of the season on the biggest day of the year is extremely satisfying,” Jade said. “Greg (Jade’s co-coach and husband) and I couldn’t be happier; I still can’t believe it to be honest. I’ve been at a few clubs, but Narre Warren is a special place,” she said.
