MANY Yarra Ranges traders fear the introduced public holiday next month will have a significant impact on their business.

As the Friday, 2 October, holiday looms, on the eve of the AFL Grand Final, the ‘Mail’ has canvassed opinion regarding concerns over the potential for negative impact on the region’s economy.

A recent Australian Industry Group survey found the public holiday could cost the state at least $1 billion, with three-quarters of the state’s businesses opting to keep their doors closed.

This sentiment seems to echo that of the Yarra Ranges business communities, with John Newell from the Healesville Chamber of Commerce estimating it could cost the region hundreds of thousands of dollars over the next two years.

Meanwhile, John Coleman, from the Monbulk Business Network, conducted a brief poll on behalf of the ‘Mail’, with the overall response being “not in favour”.

Mr Coleman said much concern existed within the region.

“Some communicated that additional staff wages would make it too expensive to open their doors,” he said.

“Others said they would have to close and that it was bad for business.”

The ‘Mail’ also sought opinion through social media channels.

Robyn Schimmy said, “Great, more tourists making our roads dangerous in the Yarra Ranges.

Pete Steky said, “I’m not convinced about the day off. But I do think it might help tourism.

Though, I think most interstate visitors would be hanging around

Melbourne for the weekend. Why would they want to come our way if there’s more to do in the city?”

Linda Shambrook said, “I see it as a waste of a perfectly good working day, already having issues with staff not being available for Saturday, as they are making it a long weekend”.

After recently meeting with the Victorian Opposition Leader, Matthew Guy, the ‘Mail’ questioned the Liberal Party’s position on the holiday.

Although saying it could have a positive outcome for tourism-oriented areas such as the Yarra Ranges, he said it would be an overall drag on the Victorian economy.

Mr Guy didn’t state whether that, if re-elected, the Liberal Party is likely to scrap the public holiday, but admitted it had the potential to become a key election issue.

Meanwhile, Gembrook MP, Brad Battin, said the holiday would be a blow.

“This is just another example of an ill-considered Labor policy, rushed through with little regard for the consequences,” he said.

“Local small business owners are your neighbours, mums and dads trying to make a living while competing with big business and online trading.

“Friday is one of the busiest days for retail and hospitality businesses.”

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS MOUNT Evelyn Primary School’s childcare program turned one year old yesterday and they had a big day planned to celebrate.

Childcare co-ordinator Melissa McDonald, organised the day of fun for all children with a bouncing castle, music and even an ice cream truck.

When the out of hours school care program started there were only about 20 children that participated and now a year later there are about 50 involved in the program.

“It’s really good for Preps to get to know the school and older students before they start,” Ms McDonald said.

The childcare service caters for younger and older children and offers opportunities for growth and learning for everyone.

“Younger children get a great chance for socialisation and confidence where the older kids take on a leadership role and everyone is exposed to new learning experiences,” Ms McDonald said.

All of the team involved in the child care program are qualified or in training in childcare and are from Mount Evelyn Primary School so the kids get used to seeing familiar faces before they start school.

The childcare program is completely backed by and run through Mount Evelyn Primary School and Ms McDonald said Principal Scott Tully is very supportive of the program.

“He goes a long way with his support; he goes above the call of

duty,” she said.

“Scott is so supportive, any money we make goes straight back into programs, the kids always come first with him.”

The program is considered an accredited child care provider that is eligible for Child Care Rebate and Child Care Benefit based fee reduction.

Ms McDonald said she feels

so lucky to be able to provide this program for children in the community and have the full support of the school to do so.

“The kids are on holidays so they should be enjoying themselves,” she said.

WARD funds will be banned for councils across the state by next year’s local government elections, ending a quick, but exploitable, way of providing funding to community groups.

But Yarra Ranges Council has defended its use of the funds, while accepting how easy they could be misused.

Cardinia Council’s Manager of Governance, Doug Evans, meanwhile, said the council could adapt to the change, and raised the possibility of creating a grants program with its funding.

On 26 August, Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins announced the Local Government (Improved Governance) Bill 2015, which will bring in “tougher standards” for councillors state-wide.

The bill, which has been introduced to parliament, will require councillors to agree to codes of

conduct when they take office, force councils to establish procedures to deal with alleged breaches, and will allow councillors to be suspended for six months for serious misconduct.

Councillor discretionary funds, or ward funds, will also be outlawed if the bill passes.

Yarra Ranges mayor, Maria McCarthy, said she understood why the government was opposed to ward funds, but defended their use.

“I can understand the State Government wanting to tidy it up and wanting to give it more rigour, but I can assure you that Yarra Ranges is very diligent in the way our policy is set out to accommodate people’s requests,” Ms McCarthy said.

“People do mismanage what they do, and then us councils that do it really well, we get put into that same bag of baddies, and we’re not.

“And then our residents hear the bad stories and we get tarnished with the bad stories.”

She said that council staff had “strict policy guidelines” for ward fund applications.

Mr Evans said that ward funds were used to support “deserving groups and individuals” in the area, and that funds were agreed on by a council resolution - not left to a councillor’s discretion. Though he said council had not yet formed an opinion on the bill, he said they were “valuable” when used properly.

“We agree that there are some risks for the misuse of Ward Funds however, when monitored appropriately, they are a valuable way to support the community,” Mr Evans said.

He said that if ward funds are outlawed, council may consider creating a “competitive grants program” with the allocated funding.

Deputy Premier and Monbulk MP, James Merlino, said the bill will give councils and the Victorian Government “a broader range of powers” to deal with councillors

breaching codes of conduct.

“Councils do important work in representing their communities. We need to ensure that the actions of one rogue individual don’t impact an entire council,” he said.

“Unfortunately, too often ward funding was not being used appropriately.

“These reforms recognise that funding should be transparent and not the decision of a single individual.”

He said the contents of the bill came after reports from the Local Government Inspectorate, and the measures in the bill will be in place ahead of October 2016’s local government elections.

The Yarra Ranges Council currently allocates about $12,000 per councillor per year to use for ward funds.

By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Ferntree Gully Motor Group has topped the $1 million mark in money given back to the local community through its benevolent programs.

Earlier this month, the sixth ‘Great Community Raffle’ - run in partnership with the Rotary Club of Emerald and District - raised a whopping $168,100.

The raffle is a joint-initiative that enables local community groups to enjoy the spoils. The concept was to donate a new car as the first prize in the raffle, and tickets would be sold and distributed by community groups within their local area at no cost to themselves. Every dollar they raised, they could keep.

To keep the raffle on a local level, Ferntree Gully Nissan partnered with an approved charitable organisation.

Enter Emerald Rotary, with which it had an existing relationship for the annual ‘Kids Fun Run with Thomas’.

The Upper Ferntree Gully Junior Football Club this year won the first prize - a Nissan Qashqai valued at around $30,000.

We do it because we see it as a responsibility that everyone should act on in their community. We’re just simply doing our bit”.

About 200,000 raffle tickets were printed this year, with over 100 local community groups participating in the event.

“We started this raffle with what we thought was a bang in 2010 off the back of the community

youth awards that we ran for several years,” Mr Pearce said.

“We were able to raise in that first year just over $87,000 for our community. (But) in reality, this turned out to be a very humble beginning as we’re now in our seventh year and we’ve hit a record this year of $168,100.

“When you add it all together, for the decade - or just under - that we’ve been running our programs we’ve actually now topped the $1 million mark. But The Great Community Raffle in its six years has hit $830,000 and our hope is to actually knock the $1 million over next year just with the raffle alone. We’re really proud of that.”

Mr Pearce announced that for next year’s raffle, the Ferntree Gully Motor Group would put two cars up for grabs.

“At the end of the day, as you all know, you raise the money, you sell the tickets and you keep the money,” he told a Ferntree Gully Nissan showroom packed full of representatives from a range of local community groups.

“It’s all for you anyway, and if there’s another car on the line we might get a few more people out there buying tickets. If we print a few more tickets you’ll all raise more money. That’s the idea, so we’re looking forward to it.”

Drug driver warning from sergeant

By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Ranges Highway Patrol’s sergeant has called on drivers to be more aware of the risks of driving under the influence of drugs, as police begin eight months of operations.

Highway Patrol Sergeant John Morgan told the Mail last Friday that October will mark the beginning of eight months of police operations, with various driving offences to be targeted until May. The first of these will be Operation Pincer, where covert and marked police motorbikes will patrol “rat runs”, or back roads which motorcyclists often travel dangerously.

“They’ll be doing the rat runs, where some of the motorcyclists are now avoiding the main arterial roads, like the Reefton Spur and the Black Spur, and are going on to Myers Creek Road and Chum Creek Road - and, unfortunately, our collisions are increasing in those areas,” Sgt Morgan said.

While the operation will focus on motorcyclists, Sgt Morgan said anybody caught breaking the law “will be snaffled as well”.

Following this will be Operation Osborne, where police will target people driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol - or both.

Sgt Morgan said that Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol officers began training in April to drug-test drivers - previously, only State Highway Patrol or booze bus police officers

were able to conduct the tests.

Since then, he said 108 people had been caught driving in the Yarra Ranges on drugs, with one officer, Leading Senior Constable Aiden Williams, catching 36 of these drivers alone.

Sgt Morgan said of the 108, roughly 10 had been caught with marijuana and methamphetamine (ice) in their system - the others were roughly split down the middle, returning positive tests for one of those two drugs.

“Ice is a huge issue, mate,” he said.

“One of my blokes pulled over a P1 (probationary) driver, and she got charged with drug driving - and she just freely admitted ‘I took ice on Saturday night when I was out, and I didn’t realise I couldn’t drive.’

“Ice stays in the system - it doesn’t evaporate in 12 hours.”

First-time drug driving offenders will receive a $450 fine and lose their licence for three months on-the-spot, but Sgt Morgan said the consequences could be far more severe.

Using a hypothetical example of a fatality, involving a four-wheeldrive and a Holden Barina, Sgt Morgan said having drugs in a driver’s system immediately brought harsher legal consequences.

“The four wheel drive driver, he’s fine, he’s walking around, and the Barina driver’s dead - we would drug test as well as alcohol test that driver,” he said.

“Even if they don’t worry about their licence, even if they don’t worry about their fines ... apart from the grief and everything else they go through, they’re going to jail.”

Police also notify insurance companies if a driver has tested positive to drugs or alcohol, which immediately voids any potential claims.

“If they’re driving a $100,000 car, that’s $100,000 they’ve got to find, because they’re not covered,” Sgt Morgan said.

“There’re so many facets to this, and I don’t think people see it.”

Other police operations include Operation Step, where low-level speeding will be in the crosshairs.

“I think there’s been this misconception that people in a 60 zone can drive at 70 (kilometres per hour),” Sgt Morgan said.

“We’re just trying to knock that on the head.”

The annual Summer Stay operations are expected to begin in November and December, targeting speed and safety offences, such as using a mobile phone while driving.

Sgt Morgan said mobile phones were often the cause of rear-end collisions, due to driver distraction, and warned drivers that using a phone could be as simple as checking the time while stopped at traffic lights.

Being caught using a mobile phone while driving carries a fine of $455 and four demerit points - nearly all of the points that a probationary driver has on their licence.

Sgt Morgan said there had been 12 fatal crashes by 13 September this year in the Division 2 area of Yarra Ranges, Knox and Maroondah, compared to 11 recorded by the same time last year.

However, serious injury crashes were down 20 per cent, with 170 recorded this year, compared to 214 by the same point last year.

Briefly Bomb squad called in KNOX crime investigation detectives had to call in the bomb squad after locating a suspicious device in Ferntree Gully on the morning of 17 September.

Police were on the premises executing an unrelated search warrant when officers found the device in the garage of the Segarta Circuit home at about 5.45am.

The Bomb Response Unit attended the scene to make the device safe and cleared it from the premises before anyone needed to be evacuated.

A 26-year-old man was arrested in relation to the incident but has been released pending summons.

Excavator dug up POLICE have recovered an excavator stolen from a Monbulk building site in July, arresting a Cranbourne man in relation to the theft.

Between Saturday 18 and Monday 20 July, the JCB excavator and trailer were stolen from a building site in Old Emerald Road in Monbulk.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said at the time that the excavator and trailer were worth $50,000.

Det Sgt Barrow told the Mail that on Wednesday, 16 September, police recovered the stolen items at a Ruffy Drive property in Cranbourne.

A 32-year-old Cranbourne man was charged with the theft and has been remanded in custody.

Construction site theft POLICE are on the hunt for thieves who broke into a construction site in Monbulk earlier this month and made off with thousands of dollars’ worth of tools and equipment.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said that between 4pm on 11 September and 7am on 14 September, unknown persons entered a construction site on Macclesfield Road in Monbulk.

Det Sgt Barrow said the thieves broke into a site office by cutting a padlock off of the door.

He said numerous power tools, two fax machines, a camera and a Microsoft tablet computer were stolen from the site, with an estimated value of about $5000.

Back to jail A CROYDON man has gone back to jail after being charged in relation to two house burglaries in Upwey Between 9am and 12pm on Wednesday, 9 September, two houses in Roma Parade and Mahony Road in Upwey were broken into, with musical instruments and jewellery reported stolen.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said that detectives executed a search warrant on Thursday, 17 September in Lusher Road, Croydon, in relation to the burglaries and arrested a 53-year-old man.

Det Sgt Barrow said the man was charged in relation to both burglaries and was returned to prison for breaching his parole conditions.

Spare tyres theft POLICE are searching for thieves that took off with spare tyres from a Lilydale car lot last week.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said that between 7pm on Wednesday, 16 September, and 7.15am the following day, unknown persons entered the Yarra Valley Toyota car lot on Maroondah Highway in Lilydale.

Det Sgt Barrow said the unknown persons stole three spare tyres off of the back of three Toyota Prado four-wheel-drives, valued at $1000 each.

Victoria now has more public holidays than any other Australian state.

I have spoken to businesses in the Gembrook electorate, which expect to lose thousands of dollars because of this decision.

Friday is often the busiest day of the week for retail businesses; most will now close and have a severely reduced week of trade.

It’s one of the busiest days of the weeks for hospitality businesses, which will also close.

Businesses trading with other states will lose a day’s work, while other states continue to be productive.

These business owners are local residents, mums and dads, and our neighbours.

They are trying to make things work in strip shopping centres, battling big business and online trading.

In many cases, they are operating on a thin margin already.

Independent estimates have stated that more than 100,000 casual employees stand to lose their shifts on the day.

Many of these casual employees are students or parents of small children, who cannot replace the lost income.

I love football, and I love Grand Final day.

But I know this day off is not in the best interests of our great state.

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS FEDERAL La Trobe MP Jason Wood was one of the majority of Liberal members to lend his support to newly-appointed Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

“I have known Malcolm Turnbull for many years,” Mr Wood said in a written statement.

“I know his heart is in the right place, he is incredibly intelligent and articulate, is a man with vision, and has Australia’s best interests at heart.”

Mr Turnbull challenged the leadership of former Prime Minister Tony Abbott last Monday and by 10pm was voted the new leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister of Australia.

Mr Wood said his decision to support Mr Turnbull in the party room vote came from an 11-year political career together, where they had both worked on local issues.

“Malcolm Turnbull’s commitment to La Trobe has been a long one,” Mr Wood said.

“During his time as Environment and Water Minister, he made and delivered on many commitments to our electorate; including many Green Corps programs, and multiple Commonwealth Water Grants Program deliveries.

Dared to dream, now a reality AFTER starting the project in 2000, Dandenong Ranges author and train enthusiast John Dare has finally launched his tribute to Australia’s railways.

‘My Railway Days’ was last Sunday launched at St Cuthbert’s Chapel, Menzies Creek, in front of a healthy gathering of the author’s friends and supporters.

Dare is a well-known railway enthusiast and photographer, who has taken thousands of photographs depicting Australian and overseas trains since the mid1960s.

The book depicts his photographic journey as he travelled around Victoria and interstate from 1970 to 2007.

The 160-page hardcover book comprises more than 220 colour and black

and white images from his extensive collection.

Dare told the ‘Mail’ it had been in his mind as a life-in-retirement project.

“Many hundreds of hours of train experiences have been absorbed in me,” he said.

“I have selected photos from my extensive collection of photographs which I have taken over the past 40 years.

“Finally, in 2014, I was able to begin laying out the pages of the book, working with a graphic designer, whose expertise in the matter has resulted in a very eyecatching and attractively designed book.”

After leaving high school in 1970, John began employment with the Victorian Railways in 1971.

For the next 36 years, he worked in

the railway industry until 2007.

Upon retiring, Dare then continued writing about the changing scene of the railway network in Victoria from 1970 to 2007.

Dare said the book had been well received.

“There has been enormous support and book sales,” he said.

“Any person who has an interest in railways, in particular the railways in Victoria, will find this book a wonderful read.

“People who love looking at photographs of trains will revel in the excitement as they turn the pages.”

Letters Wood no good THERE must be a federal election looming, judging by the write-up on (Member for La Trobe) Jason Wood.

All the wonderful things he has done for us, the electorate and, of course, the obligatory photo opportunity with none other but Tony Abbott.

I wonder how many more of these there will be?

This is a man who set up his own online survey on same-sex marriage at taxpayers’ expense.

The result of the survey was a resounding ‘yes’.

Mr Wood has said that if it came to a conscience vote, he would cross the floor.

He got out of that obligation when the Prime Minister blindsided the party room, so he didn’t have to.

I, for one, did not believe he would have done that anyway.

I am seriously hoping the Labor Party isn’t resting on its laurels - that they have a fantastic candidate for this seat.

There are an awful lot of people who want a change in the seat of La Trobe.

Let us sincerely hope that this happens.

Misplaced care IT MAY be being done in a good spirit of care but the artificial feeding of the corella birds in Mount Evelyn is a terrible disruption to natural systems.

It is so wrong to create a false and unbalanced environmental situation for all the original natural species of this area.

The fundamental rule is that you never feed a native animal unless this is for controlled study purposes, for if you do so it actually in the end destroys the well-being of the species being fed.

I am sorry to have to say this but to feed this corella species is an act of destructive environmental vandalism rather than an act of care.

I’M WRITING in response to your article in the ‘Mail’ (NBN uncertainty, 1 September).

We have relocated to Olinda from South Africa and were disappointed to hear the home we purchased does not have internet.

Endless calls to Telstra proved frustrating and with no result or timeframe suggested.

I have been in touch with federal representatives Tony Smith and Jason Wood.

As understanding as they were, I am still no closer to a solution.

This, as you can understand, has been a huge inconvenience, as I have teenage children, my daughter in Year 12 and my son in Year 8.

All assignments and submissions of tasks are via the internet.

We could not believe that we live about 40 kilometres from Melbourne and have no access.

With my husband in South Africa selling our home there, and concluding our businesses, this has been a difficult time for us to communicate without internet.

For the children to be able to simply communicate via Skype has become an expensive exercise via mobile data.

If the Yarra Valley is to prosper, the internet needs to be upgraded or new services installed as soon as possible.

THIS game started off as a real arm wrestle, with both teams struggling to hit the scoreboard in the first term, but it was Upwey Tecoma that held the slight advantage after a 2.3.15 to 1.1.7 opening.

The second term was where Upwey Tecoma really opened up the play.

They played a quick style and went long on numerous occasions, while Mount Evelyn looked to be at a standstill.

In fact, Mount Evelyn didn’t score for the quarter while Upwey Tecoma peppered the goals, booting 5.7 to race out to a 45 point half-time lead.

The third term was a bit of a non-event, with neither team able to string goals together to get any sort of run on.

Mount Evelyn outscored Upwey Tecoma in the term, but it was by just three points, which still gave Upwey a match winning 42-point lead at the last change.

Upwey Tecoma was good in the last quarter as Mount Evelyn just didn’t have the run in their legs to go with them.

The Tigers booted five goals to one to finish the game in great fashion and win by an impressive 69 points, becoming premiers for the third year in a row.

Walker back to his roots UPWEY favourite son Matt Walker is preparing his band for a hometown gig, upon release of their new album.

The roots artist and his crew of talented musicians, collectively called Lost Ragas, are celebrating their release, ‘Trans-Atlantic Highway’, with a performance at Burrinja on Saturday, 26 September.

The performance will mark the start of a national tour for Lost Ragas, which formed when Walker met pedal steel player, Shane Reilly.

Roger Bergodaz (bass) and Simon Burke (drums) helped complete the quartet.

Walker is an Aria award winner and perhaps betterknown for his solo work over the past 20 years, but he told the ‘Mail’ that playing in a band had rejuvenated his music.

“I’ve more recently moved away from the solo act and focused more on the band,” he said.

“They’re the best band to work with, I feel I can express myself without

having to fit in, I can play how I want to play.

“Collectively, we have a wide appreciation of music, which is why we mix so well.”

Interestingly, Walker wasn’t the only artist in the group needing a change.

The drummer (Burke) used to be a bass player, while the bass player (Bergodaz) used to be a drummer.

Walker, too, has stepped out of his comfort zone.

He wrote much of the new album on piano, despite the guitar being his usual instrument of choice.

For this performance, it will be a homecoming of sorts, after starting out his career performing at the Selby Folk Club.

“I grew up in the Hills and sometimes take it for granted, but it has influenced my music,” he said.

The new album has been described as ‘cosmic country’.

Lost Ragas will play at Burrinja Cafe on Saturday, 26 September, with dinner from 6pm and music from 8pm (cost $20).

PIXELS is a reprehensible mess of an ’80s nostalgia trip.

When aliens attack Earth using technology based on classic arcade games, a team of elite retro gamers are assembled to combat the invaders.

Adam Sandler (who co-produces and stars in this film) has been a near-constant embarrassment for the past decade or more, and Pixels is yet another barrage of obnoxious Sandler cliches.

Sandler plays, yet again, an inconsiderate, charmless jerk that is somehow universally liked and attracts beautiful women. Kevin James (a frequent Sandler collaborator) is essentially a walking fat joke.

The film is full of irritating cultural stereotypes and forced, drawn-out humour, and alternates flippantly between fondness for classic gaming and disdainful mocking of its “nerd” main characters.

The pacing is abysmally slow and erratic, and while the video game-inspired action scenes (including Pacman’s rampage through New York) are vibrant and entertaining, they’re too scarce and not worth slogging through all the crassness and ineptitude throughout the rest of the film.

As far as movies based on video games go, Hitman: Agent 47 – stupidly written yet incredibly stylish – is much better.

Among this year’s stinkers, Aloha is worse than Pixels only because it aims higher, attempting touching drama about family relationships, but fails even more miserably.

Pixels: avoid at all costs.

By PETER DOUGLAS UPPER Ferntree Gully Primary School is taking a unique approach to teaching visual arts, with some remarkable results.

In place of traditional craftbased arts projects, children are being taught an adapted version of the secondary curriculum, thanks to their dedicated art teacher, Nikki Ashman.

“When I joined the team at Upper Ferntree Gully Primary School five years ago, I had spent 10 years teaching secondary kids,” Ms Ashman said.

“I saw no reason why I couldn’t teach the same sort of curriculum to primary school students and just adapt it to suit their learning needs.

This year alone, three children won highly commended awards at the Upwey Arts Festival and the school won the Knox Festival Bunting Arts Prize.

MONBULK Bowls Club members celebrated loudly and proudly on Saturday, 12 September.

To mark the club’s 50th anniversary, celebrations started with a dinner and dance.

Items from the club’s history were on display, including photos, old uniforms, minutes of meetings and newspaper articles.

Des Cox, the emcee for the evening, dressed smartly in his early days formal bowls uniform.

His first task was to propose a toast to all past, present and future Monbulk bowlers.

He then introduced each of the dignitaries.

Peter Delaney, the Operations Manager for Bowls Victoria, gave some insight into his preoccupations.

Then President of Bowls Victoria, John Fisher OAM, presented a plaque to the club to proclaim the 50th anniversary.

Upon receiving the plaque, president of Monbulk Bowling Club, Jenny Holmes, gave assurances it would be put in pride of place as part of the history display.

A History of Monbulk Bowling Club was then launched by the Mayor of Yarra Ranges, Cr Maria McCarthy.

Life members cutting the cake: Doug Elliott, John Van Driel, Leo Koelewyn and Terry Carey.

Although on the surface it may seem a humble publication, the book has photos and documents from the past 50 years and is a lasting record of people and events that have made the club.

A huge black forest cake decorated with a 50th motif was cut by four of the club’s life members: Doug Elliott, John Van Driel, Leo Koelewyn and Terry Carey.

Jenny Holmes gave a summary of the milestones of the

club’s history and asked everyone to consider what could be learned from the past.

Guests then danced into the night to the sounds of the band, in2groove.

The celebrations continued on Sunday, when there was a social bowls tournament.

Ray McDonald, the President of Eastern Ranges Bowls Region, presented awards to 11 new Monbulk Super Veterans, the bowlers who have reached 80 years of age.

Round 10 was the Tan relays held on the Tan Track around the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne.

Each team member ran one lap of the iconic circuit.

With many teams in contention for a top three finish in the overall season standings, the excitement and eagerness was high.

Ten Yarra Ranges Athletics teams fronted the starters.

Highlight of the day was the convincing win by the Under 14s Girls, winning their grade by more than three minutes.

Fastest male athlete was Julian Badari with a scorching 11.45s circuit.

Fastest woman was Georgia Laven with a lightning 14.12s, narrowly ahead of Veida Somerville’s 14.14s.

The club also welcomed two debutants to the Yarra Ranges Athletics family, congratulations and welcome to Sarah Love and James Love.

By DENNIS FULLER AT Emerald Golf Club last Saturday, summer gear and paraphernalia had to be dragged out of the recesses of wardrobes to cope with the spring sunshine.

The game was two-man ambrose.

Leading the pack into the Tuck Shop were Steve Town and Ross Martin when they cruised in with a nett score of 59.5.

This was from 65 off the beater after having dropped putts from various corners of the universe.

In second place were Broc Reynolds and Peter Clowes on 61.25, followed

by Travis Gerbes and Damian Gray 62.25, Dean Shannon and Peter Glasscock 63.75 and Graham White and Ken Hill 66.5.

Philip Crossley was nearest the pin on the 4th, John Fisher the 7th, Broc

The ladies produced another nail-biter but finally it was Joanne Keys and Irene Scott who held sway from Davina Aitken and visiting guest Antoinette White.

At Overly Floppy Golf on Wednesday, members got to play the old nine holes twice in a stroke format.

Ken Sumsion (27) relished the conditions of play and romped home a winner with a nett 67 from Peter Clowes (17) 68, Dennis Fuller (16) on 70 followed

by Moss Fuller (24) on 71.

Finals bring out best in players THE sun shone on what was the final day of football and netball in the Yarra Valley for 2015.

Three thousand people enjoyed the finals fever on Saturday and witnessed Olinda Ferny Creek win their first A Grade netball premiership, as well as going back-to-back in D Grade.

Meanwhile, Wandin took home the netball premiership in B, C and under 17 grades.

In the football, Healesville went back-to-back in the Under 18s, Upwey Tecoma enjoyed a three peat in the reserves, while Wandin went through undefeated to be the Division 1 senior premiers for 2015.

Wandin 16.16 (112) defeated Healesville 6.12 (48) Healesville looked to be up and about early as they slotted the first goal of the game, but it was really from there on that Wandin got the game on their terms.

The Bulldogs’ hard running and spread over the ground was just too much for Healesville to combat.

Wandin booted five opening-term goals, while Healesville’s first goal of the game was their only one for the quarter, which saw Wandin lead by 26 points.

The second term was a little more of a contest, but Wandin still had more of the ball and arguably could have been further ahead than their 34-point lead at half-time after a 3.5 to 2.3 second term.

Although Healesville trailed, they battled manfully in the third quarter.

But, for all Healesville’s efforts, Wandin was still able to maintain a handy lead after booting 4.1 to 3.2 to go into the final-quarter with a 39-point buffer.

Wandin had threatened all day to run away with this clash, and that’s exactly what they did in the last quarter.

The Bulldogs held Healesville to just three behinds while they finished off the day in great fashion, booting 4.4 to win by a hefty 64 points and become premiers for 2015.

“I just wanted to stress how big a day it was for the club.

“What’s special is we had two sides in the grand final and I couldn’t be more proud of our people, of our club and our people for all the work they did.”

Mr Fraraccio said it was a record crowd for the league and a great result for the Healesville club.

“It was a big gate,” he said.

“Six weeks ago, they didn’t think they’d make a grand final.

“At the start of the year, they thought we’d be relegated to second division.

“Most people thought we’d be relegated and we’ve gone from that to playing in a grand final.

“I’m extremely proud of our group.”

UNDER 18s Healesville 18.17 (125) defeated Wandin 9.2 (56) HEALESVILLE has gone back-to-back with a convincing 69-point win over Wandin.

The first half of this clash was a reasonable battle, although Healesville did look the better side early with a 4.6 (30) to 1.0 (6) opening.

But Wandin showed some good spirit in the second term, booting 3.1 to Healesville’s 4.1 to stay somewhat in touch at half-time as they trailed by 31 points.

If there was any doubt about the result of this game, then Healesville squashed that in the third term as their running ability came to the fore,

leaving Wandin in their wake.

Healesville booted 5.6. to 1.1 to put the game beyond doubt at three-quarter time, as their lead was out to an even 10 goals.

The last quarter did open up and goals started to flow for both sides, but Healesville still had the upper hand, scoring 5.4 to 4.1 to become premiers for the second year in a row.

The first term was a great opening, as both sides went goal for goal, and it was Olinda that held a one-goal lead at the first change.

The second term saw both defences working overtime and goals became hard to score, but Wandin was able to sneak their way in front at half-time after an 8 goal to 6 second quarter.

The third term was another goal-for-goal affair and neither team was able to gain any real advantage, both sides scoring 10 goals to see Wandin maintain their 1 goal lead at the final change.

Olinda showed why they finished atop of the ladder in the last quarter and why they haven’t been defeated by Wandin this year.

They were brilliant as they looked to go up a gear and their ball movement was first class leaving Wandin a little shocked.

Olinda hammered home 13 last-quarter goals to Wandin’s 5 to come away with a brilliant 7-goal win and become deserving 2015 premiers.

The Anita Woods Best on Court Medal was awarded to Olinda Ferny Creek player, Krista Tomlinson.

Wandin continued their good form in the second, adding another 10 goals to their score while Mount Evelyn scored 6 goals, which saw Wandin lead by a handy 16 goals at half-time.

Mount Evelyn came out in the third and gave it everything and they started to narrow the margin and get right back into the contest.

They scored 13 goals to 5 to trail by 8 goals at the final change and still in the game.

The last quarter was a good one for Wandin, because when they got the ball, they controlled the tempo of the play and just denied Mount Evelyn any real chance to be a threat.

Wandin scored 11 goals to 9 to win by 10 goals and celebrate becoming the 2015 premiers.

The third term was more of an even battle and in fact Olinda did reduce the margin after shooting 10 goals to 7, but they still trailed by 10 goals going into the final term.

The last quarter was a pretty free flowing affair, but Olinda was just no match as Wandin produced a 13 goals-to-11 quarter to win by 12 goals and raise the premiership cup for 2015.

The third quarter was another great contest, with neither team giving an inch, both sides scored 6 goals for the quarter which meant Olinda held on to their 1 goal half-time lead going into the last quarter.

The last term was another beauty and the outcome of this game was still in doubt deep into the term.

But Olinda was able to score the crucial goals to get themselves a three-goal buffer and was able to hold on to that lead to win by that margin and become the 2015 premiers.
