Speaker won’t talk CASEY MP Tony Smith has refused to declare which way he voted in last week’s Liberal Party leadership spill, which saw Malcolm Turnbull become Prime Minister.

Labor Party candidate for Casey, Hovig Melkonian, has dismissed the spill and said the move has changed “the salesman” - not what’s for sale.

On Monday, 14 September, Malcolm Turnbull defeated former Prime Minister Tony Abbott in a leadership spill, 54 votes to 44.

Deputy leader and Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop retained her post in the spill, winning the spot with 70 votes to 30 against Kevin Andrews.

Much of the week that followed was filled with speculation as to how the new Prime Minister would settle in to the role, and whether much would change within the government.

The Mail spoke to Casey MP and Speaker, Tony Smith, about the spill on Friday, 18 September, but Mr Smith refused to comment on which way he voted in the ballot.

“Some colleagues have chosen to say the way they voted - some haven’t,” he said.

“I’m one of the ones who haven’t.

“It’s over, the partyroom has made its decision, and now it’s important that we get on with it, for the good of the country.”

Though Mr Smith does not attend weekly party room meetings while in his role as speaker, he said he did attend the leadership vote and had a vote on the leader and deputy leader positions.

Opinion polls immediately following the change of leadership appeared to show a turnaround for the Coalition, which PM Turnbull said had lost 30 consecutive Newspolls - but Mr Smith again refused to comment.

“I always find these issues interesting, but I’m not a commentator on them,” he said.

Casey candidate for Labor, Hovig Melkonian, told the Mail that he thought the change would be of little effect in the long run, though he said the party should not have changed its leader.

“They haven’t changed anything fundamental about the policy of the Liberal Party,” he said.

“I suppose it’s only a new salesman to peddle the same product.

“I think that if you take a leader to an election, you should stick with that person.”

Asked how he felt about next year’s Federal Election in the face of the Coalition’s improved standing, Mr Melkonian said he was “not focused on the polls”.

“I’m realistic about my chances,” he said.

“However, it’s about holding the Liberal Party and holding Tony Smith to account, and ensuring the people of Casey get a good deal, and ensuring their interests are represented in the parliament.”

Former McEwen MP, Fran Bailey, said the change of leadership was a “very significant move”.

“I think that what people have been looking for is what I would deem as a return to true Liberal politics and philosophy, and I think Malcolm Turnbull’s return as leader ... I think that a lot of people will be heartened by that,” she said.

When asked whether Mr Turnbull’s more left-leaning stance on issues could isolate conservative voters, particularly in the Yarra Valley, Ms Bailey said the Liberal Party was a “broad church”.

“I think that John Howard referred to the Liberal Party as a ‘broad church’, and John Howard practiced what he preached,” she said.

“He was an inclusive politician, and that’s certainly what Malcolm Turnbull is promising to be.

“And, to get the very best outcome, you have to garner the talents and the ideas of everyone in the party, not just a section of the party.”

Eagle hits middle age HEALESVILLE Sanctuary’s oldest feathered friend marked his birthday last week, with Jess the Wedgetailed Eagle joining keeper, Jason Bell, for his daily routine.

Jess turned 44 on Wednesday, 16 September, and is one of the more well-known residents at the sanc-

tuary, featuring on postage stamps and wine bottles and in the sanctuary’s Spirits of the Sky presentation.

But the day didn’t go completely to plan, with Jess having other thoughts when it was time for him to take the stage.

Head-on fatal crash

Motorcyclist 70km/h over

By JESSE GRAHAM A COLDSTREAM woman was killed over the weekend in a headon crash between a motorcycle and a car in Coldstream, which police have described as an “unfortunate accident“.

Emergency services were called out to the crash on the Maroondah Highway in Coldstream, between the corner of Tarrawarra Road and St Huberts Road, at 1.29pm on Sunday, 20 September.

Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable (LSC) Scott Lardner told the Mail that the motorcycle rider, a 40-year-old Coldstream woman, was travelling towards Lilydale when the crash occurred.

LSC Lardner said the learner rider was being followed by her fiance, a more experienced rider, when she failed to fully negotiate a corner, veering into the path of an oncoming car.

“She negotiated the majority of the corner, but it was just the little part of the bend,” he said.

“She under-steered and went into the path of the oncoming vehicle.”

He said there were no allegations of speeding and that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash.

The occupants of the other car, a man, a woman, and two children, were taken to hospital for observation, and the highway remained closed for about six hours as police investigated the crash.

LSC Lardner described the crash as “shocking”, and said the signed 100 km/h speed limit left little chance of survival for the rider.

“It’s a 100 kilometres an hour zone there - even if she was doing 90 and he was doing 90, you’ve still got an impact speed of 180 kilometres,” he said.

“There’s no surviving that.”

He said that Ambulance Victoria determined that, for a serious injury collision to occur with a motorcycle, the speed would only need to be over 30 km/h.

“Any higher than that, they’re experiencing some serious injuries and major broken bones,” he said.

“She’s (the rider) obviously up in that category.”

Police will now prepare an inquest brief for the Coroner about the crash.

Coldstream CFA posted a heartfelt message on its Facebook page last night, expressing sympathy for the family and friends, and all those involved with the crash, including

emergency crews.

The brigade posted a link to Road Trauma Support Services Victoria, which provides counselling and support for people impacted by road trauma, and asked anyone affected by the crash to get in contact through the page or through the RTSSV. “These kids are going to be creating one that’s going on display, to inspire people who come to the show,” she said.

Teacher Fenna Hogg said that students with an interest in art and football were chosen for the group, and that students from Grades 3 to 6 were chosen.

“It’s great because this exhibition is about Indigenous potters and we do a lot of cultural awareness at school, and inclusiveness, and we’ve got Koori kids at our school,” she said.

“In this group, here, we’ve got three kids who are Koori and ... this is really empowering for them, and it’s exciting.”

The exhibition officially opened on 19 September and will run until April next year.

P-platers' cars impounded TWO Healesville teenagers will be car-less for a month after being caught travelling at nearly twice the speed limit over the weekend.

At about 10pm on Saturday, 19 September, officers clocked two probationary drivers, an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old, travelling at 112 kilometres per hour in a 60 km/h zone on Don Road in Healesville.

Leading Senior Constable Chris Grasby said both drivers had their cars impounded for 30 days, and they would be summonsed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Both of the teenagers were Healesville men, and Leading Sen Const Grasby said the drivers were following each other at the time they were caught.

Costly damage at secondary college

By JESSE GRAHAM HEALESVILLE Primary School students were stars for the day, taking part in an exhibition opening last Friday at the National Gallery of Victoria.

NGV representatives came out to the school on Friday 11 September for a two-hour workshop, with students to come up with pieces to be displayed when the gallery’s new exhibition opened for a preview on Friday 18 September.

The exhibition, Our Land is Alive Hermannsburg Potters for Kids, features pots from Northern Territory Indigenous art collective, The Hermannsburg Potters.

The Hermannsburg Potters’ terracotta pots will be on display, painted with historic AFL moments featuring Indigenous players, past and present - from Adam Goodes and Lewis Jetta to Michael Long and Syd Jackson.

NGV’s children and youth programs officer Brittany Wilkins said the gallery approached the school to have students decorate Hermannsburginspired pots with their own drawings of AFL players.

The 24 students all worked to plan their decorations, drawing football players and scenes onto paper before transcribing them onto the pots.

These pots were then taken to the gallery, where the students met media representatives and dignitaries, as well as getting one of the first public looks at The Hermannsburg Potters’ works.

A COLDSTREAM man will face court after being caught travelling at more than 70 km/h over the speed limit in Coldstream last week.

Police said the man was clocked riding a black Honda motorcycle at 131km/h in the 60km/h zone along Ingram Road in Coldstream on Wednesday, 16 September - before overtaking a truck on the Maroondah Highway.

He then overtook a car to the left and proceeded to overtake three more cars across double white lines.

The rider then split traffic at the Warburton Highway intersection in Lilydale and ran a red light where he crashed into a turning vehicle.

The rider fled the scene shortly after the collision, as he was riding an unregistered bike with a suspended driver’s licence.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured but the rider received injuries that required medical attention at hospital.

The rider will be charged on summons for numerous offences including evading police, dangerous speeding, and driving while suspended.

He will face court at a later date.

POLICE have interviewed two teenagers after a break-in at Upper Yarra Secondary College earlier this month.

Overnight between Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 September, unknown persons broke into the school campus on Little Yarra Road in Yarra Junction.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said that about $7000 worth of damage had been caused to the building.

Det Sgt Barrow said detectives from the CIU executed a search warrant on Friday, 18 September, and interviewed two women in regards to the break-in - both of whom are underage.

“Both have been released, pending further inquiries,” Det Sgt Barrow said.

In conditions such as fibromyalgia for instance, the body never settles into the fourth stage of sleep, and so the muscles never achieve full relaxation.

Birthday boy wings it

By JESSE GRAHAM ONE OF Healesville Sanctuary’s most iconic residents celebrated his birthday last week, with Jess the wedge-tailed eagle going strong at 44 years old.

Jess, the oldest resident at the sanctuary, turned 44 on Wednesday 16 September, and was joined by keeper Jason Bell for a media appearance to mark the day.

The eagle was rescued in 1971 by sanctuary worker Graham Carkeek in the Warburton Ranges, after his nest had fallen out of a tree.

Mr Carkeek built a nest for Jess in his garage in Lilydale and hand-raised him, later flying him around the area when he was ready.

When Victorian laws changed in 1974 and permits were required to care for native wildlife, Mr Carkeek handed Jess in to the sanctuary, where he has lived ever since.

Jess has gone on to become one of the most iconic residents at the Sanctuary, featuring on Australia Post’s 60 cent postage stamp, in the recent film, Healing, and is even the eagle featured on Wolf Blass wine bottle labels.

Jess the Wedge-tailed Eagle with his keeper, Jason Bell, at Healesville SanctuPicture: JESSE GRAHAM ary. 144443 Mr Bell said that wedge-tailed eagles live to about 40-years-old in the wild. “Jess is on a pretty good wicket here,� he said. “We’ve obviously got the best attention for him - he gets looked after really well, he’s got great vets up at the AWHC (Australian Wildlife Health Centre) looking after him, so we’re hoping that we can get him out past 50 years.�

Jess takes part in the Spirits of the Sky presentation at the sanctuary, where he flies around the crowd while keepers talk to crowds about animals, their capabilities and how to protect their habitat - he has performed more than 350,000 flybys in his time.

While Jess was meant to have a business-asusual birthday, he decided to fly away from the presentation on Wednesday, returning after the crowds had dispersed.

Mr Bell, meanwhile, did not miss a beat in keeping the presentation running, explaining that wild wedge-tailed eagles can often be seen near the sanctuary - and that they can see kilometres into the distance. “He’s been at the sanctuary, here, for 40 years and he’s been in all sorts of different places in that time,� Mr Bell said before the show. “He knows the sanctuary really well, and there is the odd occasion where he decides he wants to go have a look, but it’s pretty rare.�

While Mr Bell talked to visitors after the show, Jess stayed perched on his glove, receiving pats and scratches while watching people (and this reporter) taking photos.

By PETER DOUGLAS MANY Yarra Ranges traders fear the introduced public holiday next month will have a significant impact on their business.

As the Friday, 2 October, holiday looms, on the eve of the AFL Grand Final, the ‘Mail’ has canvassed opinion regarding concerns over the potential for negative impact on the region’s economy.

A recent Australian Industry Group survey found the public holiday could cost the state at least $1 billion, with three-quarters of the state’s businesses opting to keep their doors closed.

This sentiment seems to echo that of the Yarra Ranges business communities, with John Newell from the Healesville Chamber of Commerce estimating it could cost the region hundreds of thousands of dollars over the next two years.

Meanwhile, John Coleman, from the Monbulk Business Network, conducted a brief poll on behalf of the ‘Mail’, with the overall response being “not in favour�.

Mr Coleman said much concern existed within the region. “Some communicated that additional staff wages would make it too expensive to open their

doors,� he said. “Others said they would have to close and that it was bad for business.�

The ‘Mail’ also sought opinion through social media channels.

Pete Steky said, “I’m not convinced about the day off. But I do think it might help tourism. Though, I think most interstate visitors would be hanging around Melbourne for the weekend. Why would they want to come our way if there’s more to do in the city?�

Linda Shambrook said, “I see it as a waste of a perfectly good working day, already having issues with

staff not being available for Saturday, as they are making it a long weekend�.

After recently meeting with the Victorian Opposition Leader, Matthew Guy, the ‘Mail’ questioned the Liberal Party’s position on the holiday.

Although saying it could have a positive outcome for tourism-oriented areas such as the Yarra Ranges, he said it would be an overall drag on the Victorian economy.

Signs call to beat toll on wildlife

By JESSE GRAHAM A HEALESVILLE resident is calling for more wildlife warning signs, after a number of wombats were found to have been hit by cars near the Healesville Racecourse.

Elizabeth Stevenson-Ryan has called on Yarra Ranges Council and VicRoads to install wildlife warning signs along Healesville-Kinglake Road, after a number of animals were hit and killed on the stretch of road near the Healesville Racecourse and the turn-off to Yarra Glen.

Ms Stevenson-Ryan wrote a letter to both bodies in August, and said that on 1 and 6 August, a kangaroo and a wombat were hit by cars.

She wrote that Wildlife Crossing signs - which were not currently in the area near the racecourse - were “on the whole ignored”, and said she wanted to see new signs, recommending slower speeds after dark.

“I ask the council, in conjunction with VicRoads to follow the examples set by Tasmanian Councils and put up a ‘Slow after Dusk’ wildlife sign (with a recommended 40 or 50 km/h speed limit), not only at the Watts River but throughout the shire where native wildlife and road traffic have to co-exist,” Ms Stevenson-Ryan wrote.

The slower speed, she wrote, would not only mean drivers could see animals with more time to brake or avoid them, but could also reduce the potential for serious crashes and driver injury.

No, no it’s not the ATO

Another 14 were recorded in Yarra Glen, while one was recorded in Chum Creek.

VicRoads’ Metro South East Director of Transport and Planning Con Stasinos agreed with Ms Stevenson-Ryan in that the roads in the Yarra Ranges presented “the added challenge of animals crossing the road, such

as kangaroos, wombats and echidnas”.

“As Elizabeth pointed out in her letter, these roads are among wildlife sensitive areas, which form part of the beauty of travelling in the Yarra Ranges,” he said.

“We work with the relevant environment and wildlife government departments to determine where wildlife and other animal crossing signs need to be installed, or other infrastructure such as underpasses.”

Mr Stasinos reminded road users to take “extra care” when driving in the area, and to not take wildlife signs for granted.

He noted that Slow after Dusk signs were not used in Victoria, but welcomed Ms Stevenson-Ryan’s feedback and said it would be noted for future initiatives.

The Mail contacted Yarra Ranges Council on 26 August about the matter. Despite repeated requests for comment, no response has been received.

POLICE are urging everyone in the community to be weary of unsolicited phone calls after a phone scam pretending to be from the Australian Tax Office has shown up in the Yarra Valley.

Consumer Affairs Victoria has also issued a warning for people to be wary of phone calls from scammers claiming to be from the ATO. The scam reportedly hit 50 people in the Melbourne suburb of Manningham on Friday 11 September, threatening them with arrest over non-existent tax-fraud and tax-evasion.

Mail reader Janine had two messages left on her answering machine in consecutive days and is concerned other people might fall for the scam.

The aggressive call incorrectly tells people they are being contacted by the ATO and have committed tax crimes and there is legal action being taken against them.

Typically, the scammer makes contact by phone,

threatening the person who takes the call with arrest, legal action or even imprisonment if they do not make a payment for a ‘debt’ they owe the ATO. The person is pressed for credit card details and other personal information, or to make a payment via wire transfer.

There is also a variation of this scam that involves the scammer calling and telling a person the ATO owes them money, then requesting an ‘administration’ or other type of fee to secure their refund.

Consumer Affairs would like to remind people the ATO will never cold call about a debt, or threaten jail or arrest.

If you do receive a phone call such as this it is recommended you hang up immediately, ignore any phone messages and do not return them and never give out personal information, such as credit card details and bank account numbers.

ENTERTAINMENT on land and in the sky is just weeks away, with Lilydale Airport set to host a mammoth event on the Bathurst 1000 weekend.

The Wings and Wheels event will open to the public on from 9am on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October, for an all-out weekend of planes, helicopters and cars, accompanied by Yarra Valley produce.

Event organiser Matthew EttyLeal told the Mail that the event will have attractions for children, and for bigger kids, with jumping castles and Life Education’s Harold the Giraffe to accompany vintage cars and planes.

Aircraft demonstrations will take place over the weekend, including some by a Corsair Warbird, a Yak 52 Russian Trainer, biplanes, helicopters and even aerobatic displays and flying formations.

Visitors will be able to take part, with flights available in Tiger Moths and helicopters, as well as scenic flights.

“Or, if they’re feeling silly enough, they can do a skydive,” Mr Etty-Leal said.

He said that a disability-accessible plane will also be available on the weekend for flights.

Mr Etty-Leal said the event will raise money for six charities, four of which are organisations which support people living with disabilities, including Melba Support Services and the Yarra Ranges Special Developmental School.

There will be a number of fund-

raising events over the weekend, including a raffle and an auction, the latter of which including three week-long holidays.

For those after a bite to eat, Coombe’s executive chef Tony Milton and Sisko Chocolate will both run cooking demonstrations from 10am-4pm each day, and businesses will be running food stalls.

Mr Etty-Leal said that, with a little over three weeks until the

event, he was hoping to get more businesses on board with stalls which go for $160 for the weekend. He said businesses could also support the event by donating items for the raffle or auction, to help with the fund-raising.

PIXELS is a reprehensible mess of an ’80s nostalgia trip.

When aliens attack Earth using technology based on classic arcade games, a team of elite retro gamers are assembled to combat the invaders.

Adam Sandler (who co-produces and stars in this film) has been a near-constant embarrassment for the past decade or more, and Pixels is yet another barrage of obnoxious Sandler cliches.

Sandler plays, yet again, an inconsiderate, charmless jerk that is somehow universally liked and attracts beautiful women. Kevin James (a frequent Sandler collaborator) is essentially a walking fat joke.

The film is full of irritating cultural stereotypes and forced, drawn-out humour, and alternates flippantly between fondness for classic gaming and disdainful mocking of its “nerd” main characters.

The pacing is abysmally slow and erratic, and while the video game-inspired action scenes (including Pacman’s rampage through New York) are vibrant and entertaining, they’re too scarce and not worth slogging through all the crassness and ineptitude throughout the rest of the film.

As far as movies based on video games go, Hitman: Agent 47 - stupidly written yet incredibly stylish - is much better.

Among this year’s stinkers, Aloha is worse than Pixels only because it aims higher, attempting touching drama about family relationships, but fails even more miserably.

Pixels: avoid at all costs.

THE Yarra Valley ECOSS Spring Fair is on again this October, with a focus this year on alternative building and tiny houses.

The annual event to celebrate spring will feature sustainable building workshops, a stage of multicultural music and talks, kids’ entertainment and food from local businesses.

“It’s about showcasing what ECOSS are all about, what we are doing and new projects we have coming up,” Administration and Community Engagement Manager Chelsea McNab said.

Local businesses will have organic food stalls and community groups will be represented in the market with stalls and presentations.

“We are all about support-

ing small businesses,” Ms McNab said.

Local community groups will also be in attendance with groups such as Warburton Environment, Plastic Bag Free Warburton, Amnesty International, Upper Yarra Community House and more.

“The activities and information at the fair is centred around self-initiating and DIY,” Ms McNab said.

“It’s always a lot of fun and we will have the smoothie cycle again so people can pedal their own drinks.”

The fair will be held on Sunday 1 October at 711 Old Warburton Road, Wesburn.

“We ask people to be aware that the fair is on the first day of daylight savings, so be aware of that,” Ms McNab said.

HEALESVILLE looked to be up and about early as they slotted the first goal of the game, but it was really from there on that Wandin got the game on their terms.

The Bulldogs’ hard running and spread over the ground was just too much for Healesville to combat.

Wandin booted five opening-term goals, while Healesville’s first goal of the game was their only one for the quarter, which saw Wandin lead by 26 points.

The second term was a little more of a contest, but Wandin still had more of the ball and arguably could have been further ahead than their 34-point lead at half-time after a 3.5 to 2.3 second term.

Although Healesville trailed, they battled manfully in the third quarter.

But, for all Healesville’s efforts, Wandin was still able to maintain a handy lead after booting 4.1 to 3.2 to go into the final-quarter with a 39-point buffer.

Wandin had threatened all day to run away with this clash, and that’s exactly what they did in the last quarter.

The Bulldogs held Healesville to just three behinds while they finished off the day in great fashion, booting 4.4 to win by a hefty 64 points and become premiers for 2015.

Bulldog Josh Taylor was awarded the AFL VIC Country Best on Ground Medal.

Week one will feature a Groovy Grooming Station where children will be able to join some horsey fun!

The Groovy Grooming Station will teach young families how to care for three miniature ponies by pampering them with a giant box of grooming items.

The Groovy Grooming Station will be located in Centre Court from Monday, 21-26 September, outside Coles daily between 10am to 12.30pm, and 1.30pm and 4pm.

Warning on drug drivers YARRA Ranges Highway Patrol’s sergeant has called on drivers to be more aware of the risks of driving under the influence of drugs, as police begin eight months of operations.

Highway Patrol Sergeant John Morgan told the Mail last Friday that October will mark the beginning of eight months of police operations, with various driving offences to be targeted until May. The first of these will be Operation Pincer, where covert and marked police motorbikes will patrol “rat runs”, or back roads which motorcyclists often travel dangerously.

“They’ll be doing the rat runs, where some of the motorcyclists are now avoiding the main arterial roads, like the Reefton Spur and the Black Spur, and are going on to Myers Creek Road and Chum Creek Road - and, unfortunately, our collisions are increasing in those areas,” Sgt Morgan said.

While the operation will focus on motorcyclists, Sgt Morgan said anybody caught breaking the law “will be snaffled as well”.

Following this will be Operation Osborne, where police will target people driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol - or both.

Sgt Morgan said that Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol officers began training in April to drug-test drivers – previously, only State Highway Patrol or booze bus police officers were able to conduct the tests.

Since then, he said 108 people had been caught driving in the Yarra Ranges on drugs, with one officer, Leading Senior Constable Aiden Williams, catching 36 of these drivers alone.

Sgt Morgan said of the 108, roughly 10 had been caught with marijuana and methamphetamine (ice) in their system – the others were roughly split down the middle, returning positive tests for one of those two drugs.

“Ice is a huge issue, mate,” he said.

“One of my blokes pulled over a P1 (probationary) driver, and she got charged with drug driving – and she just freely admitted ‘I took ice on Saturday night when I was out, and I didn’t realise I couldn’t drive.’

“Ice stays in the system – it doesn’t evaporate in 12 hours.”

First-time drug driving offenders will receive a $450 fine and lose their licence for three months on-the-spot, but Sgt Morgan said the consequences could be far more severe.

Using a hypothetical example of a fatality, involving a four-wheel-drive and a Holden Barina, Sgt Morgan said having drugs in a driver’s system immediately brought harsher legal consequences.

“The four wheel drive driver, he’s fine, he’s walking around, and the Barina driver’s dead – we would drug test as well as alcohol test that driver,” he said.

“If he comes up with methamphetamine in his system, he’s going to get charged with culpable driving and he’s going to jail – I don’t think people realise how serious it is.

“Even if they don’t worry about their licence, even if they don’t worry about their fines ... apart from the grief and everything else they go through, they’re going to jail.”

Police also notify insurance companies if a driver has tested positive to drugs or alcohol, which immediately voids any potential claims.

“If they’re driving a $100,000 car, that’s $100,000 they’ve got to find, because they’re not covered,” Sgt Morgan said.

“There’re so many facets to this, and I don’t think people see it.”

Other police operations include Operation Step, where low-level speeding will be in the crosshairs.

“I think there’s been this misconception that people in a 60 zone can drive at 70 (kilometres per hour),” Sgt Morgan said.

“We’re just trying to knock that on the head.”

The annual Summer Stay operations are expected to begin in November and December, targeting speed and safety offences, such as using a mobile phone while driving.

Sgt Morgan said mobile phones were often the cause of rear-end collisions, due to driver distraction, and warned drivers that using a phone could be as simple as checking the time while stopped at traffic lights.

Being caught using a mobile phone while driving carries a fine of $455 and four demerit points – nearly all of the points that a probationary driver has on their licence.

Sgt Morgan said there had been 12 fatal crashes by 13 September this year in the Division 2 area of Yarra Ranges, Knox and Maroondah, compared to 11 recorded by the same time last year.

However, serious injury crashes were down 20 per cent, with 170 recorded this year, compared to 214 by the same point last year.

THE Australian Government’s decision this week to increase refugee intake has won support among the region’s politicians.

In light of the humanitarian crisis related to the Syrian conflict, the Federal Government announced Australia would resettle an additional 12,000 refugees.

This is in addition to the existing humanitarian program of 13,750, which rises to 18,750 in 2018/19.

Australia will also provide humanitarian support to more than 240,000 people who have been forced to flee their homes or seek refuge in neighbouring countries and will deliver much needed food, water, healthcare, education, emergency supplies and protection, including support for women and girls.

To gain a better understanding of the region’s view on this issue, the Mail is conducting a poll.

The poll asks whether readers support or oppose increas-

ing Australia’s asylum seeker intake, and whether they support or oppose the bombing of Syria also announced by the government.

Casey MP Tony Smith and La Trobe MP Jason Wood both supported the move.

Mr Smith was sympathetic to the refugees’ plight.

“The shocking situation in Syria is terrible and devastating,” Mr Smith said.

“Australians by nature are generous and always willing to lend a hand.

“I welcome the decision the government has made to ensure assistance is provided to those who are most in need.”

Meanwhile, Mr Wood backed the announcement from then-Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

“This Monday I sent a letter to the Prime Minister, requesting an increase to the number of refugees Australia accepts annually from 13,750 to 20,000,”

Mr Wood said.

“I was so moved by the image of the young boy lying lifeless on the beach, and, as a parent, I was overwhelmed with sadness for the little boy and his family.

“I firmly believe that Australia needs to be generous and sympathetic in its response to a situation like this.”

“While I would have personally preferred this number to be even higher, my aim was to ensure that our government made the most generous commitment, which it has.”

“This is the Australian Government letting the international community know that we support a global response to the Syrian crisis.”

The Mail spoke with Victorian Opposition Leader Matthew Guy earlier this month, who also praised the move, saying the increase to more than 18,000 refugees was the correct number.

Mr Guy said Victoria should welcome the refugees to the state.

MILLWARRA Primary School has been studying how different people contribute to their community and held an expo to show what they had learned.

The project focused on community helpers and the grade Prep, 1, 2, and 3 students worked together to learn all about the people and what they do to help their community.

Each group of students was given a different occupation or community group to learn about and build a display about that person or group over the course of the term.

Teacher Trish Snowden said the project had been a great success and the expo was an exciting time for the students.

“It was all about community engagement

and the students gaining an understanding of what different people do,” she said.

“The benefit of having an expo was the students had to display their new knowledge by explaining back what they had learned.”

The project also fit in with the school’s focus on sustainability as waste collectors and other environmental services were included in the project.

Principal Rod Bernard said the project was “awesome” and he was very proud of what the students had achieved.

“There was so much maths and literature involved in making the displays and researching the different groups,” he said.

“It was such an engaging project and there was so much work involved in learning but also the students understanding what are learning.”

Round 10 was the Tan relays held on the Tan Track around the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne.

Each team member ran one lap of the iconic circuit.

With many teams in contention for a top three finish in the overall season standings, the excitement and eagerness was high.

Ten Yarra Ranges Athletics teams fronted the starters.

Highlight of the day was the convincing win by the Under 14s Girls, winning their grade by more than three minutes.

Fastest male athlete was Julian Badari with a scorching 11.45s circuit.

Fastest woman was Georgia Laven with a lightning 14.12s, narrowly ahead of Veida Somerville’s 14.14s.

The club also welcomed two debutants to the Yarra Ranges Athletics family, congratulations and welcome to Sarah Love and James Love.

The second term was where Upwey Tecoma really opened up the play.

They played a quick style and went long on numerous occasions, while Mount Evelyn looked to be at a standstill.

In fact, Mount Evelyn didn’t score for the quarter while Upwey Tecoma peppered the goals, booting 5.7 to race out to a 45 point half-time lead.

Thousands witness wins

THE sun shone on what was the final day of football and netball in the Yarra Valley for 2015.

Three thousand people enjoyed the finals fever on Saturday and witnessed Olinda Ferny Creek win their first A Grade netball premiership, as well as going back-to-back in D Grade.

Meanwhile, Wandin took home the netball premiership in B, C and Under 17 grades.

In the football, Healesville went back-to-back in the Under 18s, Upwey Tecoma enjoyed a threepeat in the reserves, while Wandin went through undefeated to be the Division 1 senior premiers for 2015.

Healesville Football Club president, Felix Fraraccio, congratulated the victorious Wandin team.

“To the Wandin Football Club, to their coach and their committee, we had four goes at trying to knock them off during the year, but we couldn’t and we congratulate them on a premiership,” he said.

“I just wanted to stress how big a day it was for the club.

“What’s special is we had two sides in the grand final and ... I couldn’t be more proud of our people, of our club and our people for all the work they did.”

Mr Fraraccio said it was a record crowd for the league and a great result for the Healesville club.

“It was a big gate,” he said.

“Six weeks ago, they didn’t think they’d make a grand final.

“At the start of the year, they thought we’d be relegated to second division.

“Most people thought we’d be relegated and we’ve gone from that to playing in a grand final.

“I’m extremely proud of our group.”

UNDER 18s Healesville 18.17 (125) defeated Wandin 9.2 (56) Healesville has gone back-to-back with a convincing 69-point win over Wandin.

The first half of this clash was a reasonable battle, although Healesville did look the better side early with a 4.6 (30) to 1.0 (6) opening.

But Wandin showed some good spirit in the second term, booting 3.1 to Healesville’s 4.1 to stay somewhat in touch at half-time as they trailed by 31 points.

If there was any doubt about the result of this game, then Healesville squashed that in the third term as their running ability came to the fore, leaving Wandin in their wake.

Healesville booted 5.6. to 1.1 to put the game beyond doubt at three-quarter time, as their lead was out to an even 10 goals.

The last quarter did open up and goals started

B GRADE Wandin 42 defeated Mount Evelyn 32 Wandin set up their victory in the first quarter as they shot out of the blocks, scoring 16 goals to 4, leaving Mount Evelyn a little stunned.

Wandin continued their good form in the second, adding another 10 goals to their score while Mount Evelyn scored 6 goals, which saw Wandin lead by a handy 16 goals at half-time.

Mount Evelyn came out in the third and gave it everything and they started to narrow the margin and get right back into the contest.

They scored 13 goals to 5 to trail by 8 goals at the final change and still in the game.

The last quarter was a good one for Wandin, because when they got the ball, they controlled the tempo of the play and just denied Mount Evelyn any real chance to be a threat.

Wandin scored 11 goals to 9 to win by 10 goals and celebrate becoming the 2015 premiers.

Best on Court medal was awarded to Wandin’s Tayla Harris.

The AFL Vic Country Best on Ground Medal went to Healesville’s James Edmonds.

DIVISION 1 NETBALL A GRADE Olinda Ferny Creek 40 defeated Wandin 33 This game was everything fans wanted in a grand final for three quarters, as it was impossible to separate the sides.

The first term was a great opening, as both sides went goal for goal, and it was Olinda that held a one-goal lead at the first change.

The second term saw both defences working overtime and goals became hard to score, but Wandin was able to sneak their way in front at half-time after an 8 goal to 6 second quarter.

The third term was another goal-for-goal affair and neither team was able to gain any real advantage, both sides scoring 10 goals to see Wandin maintain their 1 goal lead at the final change.

Olinda showed why they finished atop of the ladder in the last quarter and why they haven’t been defeated by Wandin this year.

They were brilliant as they looked to go up a gear and their ball movement was first class leaving Wandin a little shocked.

Olinda hammered home 13 last-quarter goals to Wandin’s 5 to come away with a brilliant 7-goal win and become deserving 2015 premiers.

The Anita Woods Best on Court Medal was awarded to Olinda Ferny Creek player, Krista Tomlinson.

Mount Evelyn best players: Jessica Lowe, Kelsey Eslick, Sarah Graffen (20 goals).

C GRADE Wandin 41 defeated Olinda Ferny Creek 29 Wandin’s first half of this game was first class and really was the catalyst for their victory.

Wandin started off well with a 13 goal to 5 opening quarter and stretched their lead even further in the second term, scoring 8 goals to 3 to lead by 13 goals at the half.

The third term was more of an even battle and in fact Olinda did reduce the margin after shooting 10 goals to 7, but they still trailed by 10 goals going into the final term.

The last quarter was a pretty free flowing affair, but Olinda was just no match as Wandin produced a 13 goals-to-11 quarter to win by 12 goals and raise the premiership cup for 2015.

The Best on Court Medal was awarded to Wandin’s Keeley Iedema.

Olinda Ferny Creek best players: Jane Batey (1 goal), Elle Cody, Mary Taylor.

D GRADE Olinda Ferny Creek 29 defeated Wandin 26 The first quarter of this game was a low-scoring encounter, but it was a close one as Wandin led 6 goals to 5 at the first change.

The second term opened up a little with more free flowing play, as both sides started to settle.

But it was Olinda that got their noses in front by just 1 goal at the half, after a 9-goal-to-7 second term.

The third quarter was another great contest, with neither team giving an inch, both sides

scored 6 goals for the quarter which meant Olinda held on to their 1 goal half-time lead going into the last quarter.

The last term was another beauty and the outcome of this game was still in doubt deep into the term.

But Olinda was able to score the crucial goals to get themselves a three-goal buffer and was able to hold on to that lead to win by that margin and become the 2015 premiers.

The Best on Court Medal was awarded to Wandin’s Alicia Kay. Olinda Ferny Creek best players: Sheridan Faull, Georgia Patton, Michelle Tomlinson (6 goals).

Wandin best players: Alicia Kay (22 goals), Gayle Seeger, Erin Foot.

17 AND UNDER Wandin 32 defeated Warburton Millgrove 21 This game started off an even affair, with Wandin taking 1-goal lead into quarter time.

Wandin capitalised on their chances in the second, scoring 7 goals to 3 to take a handy lead into the third quarter.

It was status quo in the third, with no change to the lead.

Wandin kicked it up another gear in the last and came away premiers for 2015.

The Best on Court Medal was awarded to Wandin’s Olivia Kerr.
