A MAN faces eight months’ jail after pleading guilty to “bottling” a person in the head as well as to several liquor store robberies.

Deng Abraham Amol, 24, had been drinking beer at Pop-Up Park in Dandenong when he argued with another male just before midnight on 6 April, a court was told.

After the argument broke up, Amol smashed the end of a beer bottle, hid it in his jacket and confronted the victim again.

After further words, Amol stabbed the victim’s forehead with the broken bottle.

The victim lost a large amount of blood and had his wound glued at Dandenong Hospital, police prosecutor Senior Constable Tanique McFarlane told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday 14 September.

Amol, who was on bail at the time, told police he had retaliated after the victim “kept on coming up and bothering me” and “calling me names”.

He claimed the victim had punched him twice just before the stabbing.

Amol also faced charges for smashing a public-transport bus’s glass door in April 2013 after being refused entry on the departing vehicle.

Amol told police at the time he was sorry and didn’t mean to break the glass.

Sen Const McFarlane applied to the court for Amol to pay the bus company $512 compensation for the broken door.

In January 2014, Amol and a co-

accused stole bottles of Scotch and rum worth $192 and abused a Chelsea liquor store staff member after being unable to produce proof-ofage identification.

“Serve me alcohol or I’ll take it by force,” he allegedly told the staff member.

He soon returned with a group of friends telling the staff member that “if you keep being a c... I’ll beat the f... out of you”.

The group took five Johnny Walker Red Scotch whisky bottles as well as Black Douglas Scotch whisky, and tequila, totalling $369.

“I wouldn’t call it a robbery,” Amol allegedly told police.

“We stole some liquor, that’s all.”

Later that month, he allegedly stole two bottles of whisky from a Noble Park liquor outlet. Five days later, he returned to the store to pay for the items.

He told police he wouldn’t have stolen unless he was drunk.

His defence lawyer said Amol had a long-standing issue with alcohol, drinking two litres of cask wine a day as well as “any strong spirits he could find”.

Amol, a Sudanese refugee with learning difficulties, recently completed a seven-day detox program and was prescribed with naltrexone and Valium.

Magistrate Pauline Spencer indicated Amol was facing eight months’ jail followed by a community corrections order given the intentional, pre-meditated nature of the glassing.

Amol will be formally sentenced at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 30 September.

Support grows for top cop’s anti-booze views

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS GREATER Dandenong’s top cop has slammed the state’s “ridiculously permissive” liquor licensing regime.

And last week his views that the ready availability of cheap alcohol fuels a range of social and criminal problems received moral support from the state opposition and Greater Dandenong council.

Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius, who oversees the south metro police region, said the Victorian Commission of Gambling and Liquor Regulation allowed giant packaged liquor outlets to target disadvantaged communities.

It is a system that rewards “people motivated by profit on the back of the misery of others,” Mr Cornelius said.

“My key frustration is we have a regulatory framework that doesn’t support us making the case that we need less alcohol in the community, not more.

“I find it passing strange that we have to prove that another liquor outlet in our community will cause harm.

“I would think in any legal system the proponent would have the burden of proof on them, to prove that their outlet won’t cause harm.”

He said packaged liquor outlets account for 75 per cent of alcohol-fuelled crime in the south east.

Yet these outlets comprise just 10 per cent of the region’s 3000-plus liquor licences.

Mr Cornelius said that early research, conducted jointly with south-east councils, had found a close correlation with alcohol-related family violence.

“The vast, vast, vast majority (of packaged liquor) is consumed in the family home,” Mr Cornelius said.

“The main game is around how we negate excessive volumes of liquor being put

out in our community and driving up offending.” Mr Cornelius said he would like the outlets subject to similar restrictions as licensed bars and pubs - which limits deals such as two-for-one offers.

“If I had a magic wand, it would be to put the excessive marketing and consumption of alcohol back in balance.

“But this isn’t a police issue, this is a community attitudinal problem.”

Mr Cornelius also takes aim at Shane Warne and the nation’s “idiotic” attitude to excessive alcohol drinking.

He points to Warne’s persistent line of questioning to Australia’s victorious World Cup cricketers in March when he asked how “thirsty” they were.

“To change our attitude, we need people like Shane Warne to change their attitude,” Mr Cornelius said.

“That idiotic linking of excessive drinking of alcohol in celebration isn’t on.

It has to stop.” Opposition leader Matthew Guy recently told Star News the best thing would be for south east councils to ask the State Government for a moratorium on new liquor outlets in affected areas.

As a former Planning Minister, he had introduced such a moratorium in Chapel Street, Prahran.

Mr Guy said there was no better advice on community safety than that given by police.

However, he backed away from overhauling the liquor licensing regime.

Greater Dandenong community services director Mark Doubleday told a council meeting on 14 September that it was waiting for the completion of the evidence-based review - which was referred to by Mr Cornelius.

Mr Doubleday said the council would seek changes if the link between packaged liquor sales and harm was established.

THE Dog Squad has sniffed out three would-be hoons who crashed into a power pole in Springvale.

A patrolling canine unit spotted a white Ford station wagon being driven erratically on Springvale Road near Virginia Street about 9.30pm on Tuesday 15 September.

The driver sped away when the officers tried to intercept the car.

A short time later it travelled at speed through a red light at Springvale and Heatherton roads, tried to avoid another car and crashed.

Three men ran from the scene but the dog squad handler and his canine counterpart tracked them down in a nearby bowls club car park.

The 21-year-old from Dandenong and two Springvale men, aged 22 and 30, were taken to The Alfred and Dandenong hospitals for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Springvale police Sergeant Luke Holmes said it was amazing the men were able to exit the car, let alone run from police.

“It is just so lucky another car was not involved or an innocent motorist injured,” he said.

“The car travelled through the intersection and sliced a power pole in half, lighting up the sky.

“A traffic light was also taken out, a number of signs were hit and power nearby was affected.”

Police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor.

WHAT’S IN A NAME DELVES INTO THE FASCINATING STORIES AND PERSONALITIES BEHIND SOME OF THE CITY’S BEST-KNOWN STREET NAMES. THIS WEEK THE JOURNAL LOOKS AT HEMMINGS STREET, NAMED IN HONOUR OF AN EARLY BUSINESSMAN AND COUNCILLOR.

Businessman’s passion remembered in park JOHN Hemmings was a coach builder from Ringwood near Bristol.

He landed in Dandenong in 1855, worked as a carpenter and built up a coach-building works and timber business.

Mr Hemmings started as a small contractor and went on to become one of Dandenong’s most outstanding public men with one of the town’s most successful businesses.

In 1873, John K. Dunbar bought the wheelwright and blacksmith business from Mr Hemmings and for some time stayed in its Pultney Street premises, later moving to a small shop next door to Arthur Griffiths on the corner of Main and Foster streets.

Later he and Mr Hemmings joined forces under the name Dunbar and Hemmings.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? Mr Hemmings was a member of the roads board and the first shire council, and was shire president in 1903-04.

He served on the shire council for 1873-75, 1889-95 and 1898-1913, his occasional defeats in the polls said to be due to the fervour with which he espoused various causes and local issues.

Hemmings was also on the Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society, Dandenong Mechanics Institute and Dandenong City Bowling Club committees.

Things didn’t roll smoothly for Dandenong City Bowling Club in Dan-

denong Park. The opening of its tworink green in 1883 was washed out and it became embroiled in a conflict with Hemmings over a nearby dam that was soaking the green.

The dam named Hemmings Lake was eventually drained and filled in.

Mr Hemmings bequeathed the land now home to Hemmings Park for the use of the citizens of Dandenong as a memorial to the soldiers of World War I. The brickyards on the site operated until 1929 when Dandenong Council took over the land.

The council used the hole from which the clay was dug as a tip and in the 1990s uncovered remains from it when constructing an adventure playground.

Today the park also has BMX

John Hemmings, to the right of the pine tree on Lonsdale Street on a market day in 1906. tracks, skate ramps, a flying fox and a Liberty Swing for people with disabilities.

River red gums remain throughout the park.

Mr Hemmings died in 1922, aged 84.

LOOKING BACK 21 September 2015 100 years ago 9 September 1915 Red Cross Work Letter to Editor: SIR, - On returning to our Town I was surprised, and I must say indignant on behalf of the Red Cross Society to find doubt was being cast on the great and good work which is being carried out by the society.

There seems to be an inference that the soldiers are not receiving the benefits of the efforts of the Red Cross workers, and that there are instances of unscrupulous persons having gone so far as to sell Red Cross comforts to our boys.

I have now had the experience of

four journeys between Australian and Egypt, in the capacity of sergeant of the military canteen, and have had every opportunity of fully observing the magnificent benefits being derived by the soldiers from the Red Cross work.

The distribution of the comforts lies in the hands of the Medical officers, and the Chaplin of the troopship, and I can assure all readers that outside of the Red Cross clothing, books, magazines and other articles, the men receive practically nothing.

Invalids and wounded come aboard at Egypt with practically nothing more than rough and worn out uniforms, and thanks to the Red Cross they are at once made comfortable with fresh pyjamas, shirts, mufflers

etc. to say nothing of distributions of tobacco and cigarettes.

Between 5.30pm and 6pm on September 10 a nine year old boy was playing in the backyard of his home in Fontane Terrace, Narre Warren, when a man grabbed him from behind and hurled him into a chicken

pen and then locked the door behind him before fleeing.

Neighbours came to the boy’s aid when they heard him screaming.

Police are baffled as to the man’s motive.

NEXT year, 14 schools in Dandenong will receive a share in more than $4.8 million in State Government funding a part of its plan to make Victoria the Education State.

Distributed between primary and secondary schools, the money will be spent on upgrading schools and assisting disadvantaged families. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the extra investment is exactly what schools in Dandenong need.

“It means more confidence for every parent and the best chance for every child,” Ms Williams said.

Kevin Mackay, principal of 30 years at Dandenong North Primary School, said the money is the single biggest injection he has received and a welcomed relief as the five year National Partnership payments from the Federal Government end this December.

“Over the last three years we will have got around $600,000 through national partnerships payments so the $600,745 from the State Government is new money but not a new amount,” Mr Mackay said.

Not aware of the exact spending guidelines around the funds which were announced on Monday 14 September, Mr Mackay said he hoped to employ an outside consultancy to

build teacher capacity and professional development for his staff.

“Targeted programs and intervention is the best way to break the cycle of disadvantage but our biggest problem in terms of spending the new money is space.

“It’s a matter of acoustics and you need spaces for intervention programs and we don’t have any spare room at the moment.

The school has been without stage two of its construction development plan under the federally funded Building the Education Revolution (BER) program introduced in 2009 after the money run out.

“We got pretty much two thirds of a new school from the BER program but what we don’t have is a hall and a canteen,” Mr Mackay said.

The new money will be spent on assisting families with school costs such as uniforms, camps and excursions and the State Government has also added eyeglasses to the mix, a problem Mr Mackay said many schools might not be aware of.

OPSM staff visited the primary school in 2013 and were shocked to find that many of the children needed glasses.

“The number of children that needed glasses and didn’t have them was just huge, it was abnormal and OPSM supplied them with glasses free of charge through OPSM’s partnership with State Schools Relief.

“That program showed the need for glasses to be included and we were the catalyst for that,” Mr Mackay said.

Schools in Keysborough will also share in more than $3.4 million with Keysborough Secondary College receiving the biggest boost in the area at $1,013,445.

By CASEY NEILL FOR almost 80 years, Private James ‘Jimmy’ Melbourne has languished in an unmarked grave at Springvale Botanical Cemetery.

The World War I veteran and football pioneer received long-overdue recognition on Friday 18 September when Honouring Indigenous War Graves (HIWG) unveiled a headstone marking his final resting place.

Didgeridoo player Mort Hansen performed a personal message to Jimmy, “letting his spirits know this day is for him”.

The service also included The Ode and a smoking ceremony “to ward off evil spirits and to free the souls of the veterans and all people attending the ceremony”.

HIWG president John Schnarrs travelled from Western Australia to attend and was thrilled with the turnout, which included AFL legend Kevin Sheedy.

“It was really good to see,” he said.

Mr Schnarrs said HIWG chose to honour Private Melbourne “because of what he’d achieved”.

Western Australian Department of Aboriginal Affairs detailed Private Melbourne’s life in They Served With Honour: Untold Stories of Western Australian Aboriginal Servicemen at Gallipoli.

He was born in 1876 in Western Australia’s York area, spent time in the Native and Half Caste Mission in Perth, and in the 1890s excelled as a jockey, Australian Rules footballer, boxer and cricketer.

He represented AFL side West Perth in June 1900, the first Aboriginal person to play the game at a state level.

The Western Australian Football League in 2007 created the Jimmy Melbourne Cup and each year awards it to the winner of the South Fremantle-Claremont clash played during National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week.

A MAN has stolen about $1000 from a Dandenong milk bar after threatening the woman behind the counter.

The man was inside the Ross Street milk bar about 8.15pm on Monday 14 September when he got a drink from the fridge and placed it on the counter.

He then pulled up his shirt to reveal a knife and demanded money from the female employee at the cash register.

When the woman ran out the back to find her husband, the man took out the knife and tried to follow her but was unable to get through the door.

He then returned to the till and stole up to $1000 before fleeing.

The man was described as being aged between 20 and 25, of Middle Eastern appearance, and was wearing a grey hoodie and black tracksuit pants at the time.

E V E ENT E R F FACE PAINTING THREE 13-year-old boys will face court over a fire and breakin at Dandenong Market on Monday 14 September.

Dandenong CIU Senior Constable Matthew Reid said police arrested two boys from Dandenong and one from Narre Warren North on Thursday 17 September.

They’ll answer arson and burglary charges in Dandenong Children’s Court in late October.

Sen Const Reid said CCTV footage helped police to identify the teens, and also allege they were in possession of items stolen from the market.

The fire destroyed a store that sold electric cigarettes and shisha pipes and caused significant damage to the stores on

either side. Police alleged the boys ripped a sliding door from its hinges to break in, damaged other stores in the market and stole jewellery.

Councillor Peter Brown said there had been other recent break-ins at the market, and had some advice for would-be thieves.

“When you break into a premises and commit arson don’t wear your school uniform,” he said.

Later the same evening, firefighters tackled a blaze sparked by a chemical reaction at a Dandenong South abattoir.

Three CFA pumpers and a hazmat unit were called to the blaze at the Australian Meat Group factory’s water treatment plant at Hammond Road about

9.30pm. A CFA spokeswoman said the fire, which produced a large amount of “toxic smoke”, was under control within 25 minutes.

Up to 50 workers were evacuated from the site during the incident, she said.

Workers were back on site by 6am on Tuesday.

“It appears it started as a result of a chemical reaction between two 1000-litre chemical drums where a leak had occurred.”

She said a scientific officer helped to formulate a plan to extinguish the blaze and to stop toxic runoff from flowing into nearby creeks.

No health advice warnings were issued during the blaze.

Oswald Street, Dandenong, was just a dirt road in 1954 when the now 95-year-old, his wife Sadie and their two children, then aged seven and nine, moved in.

The arborist and his family had called Warburton home.

“The Upper Yarra Dam was being finished. There didn’t look to be any future for my children and it was a big property to look after,” Mr Morrish said.

“We came to Dandenong to give them a better education than I ever had.

“This street was being built at the time.

“We bought the block of land first, for 300 pounds, and then we had the house built for 3800 pounds.

“So the whole lot cost 4100 pounds, which is equal to about $8200.

“My back fence and the spouting’s still original.

“I can’t quote whether it’s still the original hot water service or not.

I think it is.”

Ms Kean and her husband Frank moved to Dandenong from Fish Creek when he cut business ties with his brother.

“They had no proper financial arrangement and they’d just take money whenever they needed it. It was absolutely stupid,” she said.

“I said ‘this can’t go on. You’ve got to have some sort of wages’.

“I’d had enough of it, so they decided then to split up.

“Dandenong was the last place that I wanted to come to. I thought it was a terrible place.”

But they soon bought a shop and moved into Oswald Street on 9 January, 1955.

Mr and Mrs Witham married in March 1955 and moved into the

street on 1 April. “I lived in Beaconsfield. Thelma lived at Narre Warren North and I was working in Melbourne,” Mr Witham said.

“We came here because it was suitable for me to go to work. We had three girls - one and then twins.

“They were able to go to primary school here and then go to the Cleeland high school. We were close to the hospital.

“When you looked out the kitchen window, we had two gum trees

that we could see out here and about eight houses between here and nowhere.”

They paid Wes Leed 140 pounds for the block and 3000 for the house, or about $6280.

“I was only getting $36 a week and I had a wife to support as well,” Mr Witham said.

“He built all the houses here.

You’ll find Leed Street over the corner here. He built that street after this.

“There was a narrow strip of land through here that used to be market gardens.

“These blocks were only 109 feet deep and 57 feet wide. It was 6013 square feet.

“The minimum block you had in Dandy in those days was 6000 so we just made it.

“The idea was that you bought the block of land off him and he built the house.

“If you couldn’t get the finance to build the house within three or four months, he got the block back.”

The road was sealed about five years after they moved in and they were without electricity for about six weeks.

“My wife used to bring her ironing up here to Thelma’s,” Mr Morrish said.

The neighbours have formed a firm friendship over the years.

“We have got a good friendship,” Mr Witham said.

“Marie’s son the other day was driving past and stopped in for a yarn.”

GREATER Dandenong’s new Waste and Litter Strategy has “one glaring failing”, according to councillor Matthew Kirwan.

He told the 14 September council meeting that it failed to address the issue of illegally dumped rubbish plaguing streets in central Dandenong and Noble Park.

“After my conversations with officers I am not convinced that this plan will make a significant dent in this problem,” he said.

“It hasn’t improved and has the prospect of getting worse.

“Much of this is concentrated in central Dandenong and Noble Park where the underlying reason - waste management in multi-unit developments - will only get worse as these areas continue to densify in population.

“I cannot see how anything other than patrolling the main

hotspots and picking up rubbish is not part of the answer.”

The draft 2015-’20 Waste and Litter Strategy will be released for community consultation for 28 days during October.

Cr Peter Brown said trash was strewn across Dingley, Cheltenham and Mentone ahead of the area’s annual hard rubbish collection on 21 September.

He said it highlighted that the council adopting a ‘call and collect’ method was the right choice.

But in public question time, Springvale South resident Dora Aspinall asked for a return to an annual collection because the streets were constantly littered with rubbish.

Cr John Kelly applauded the report and said it looked at new technologies to divert waste from landfill.

He said last year’s Great Bin Swap was “one of the best deci-

sions council’s ever made” and urged other metropolitan councils to align their bin lid colours to enable widespread education campaigns.

The Waste and Litter Strategy addresses waste minimisation, management and education, litter prevention and management and recycling.

Goals include reducing waste sent to landfill, delivering sustainable waste, increasing community awareness, creating clean and litter-free public places and increasing material recovered for re-use and recycling.

Action plans to achieve the goals will be reviewed annually.

Councillors at the 14 September meeting also agreed to send the council’s infrastructure services manager to the International Waste and Landfill Symposium conference in Sardinia, Italy, from Sunday 4 to Friday 9 October.

BANGHOLME couple Fred and Bev Fowler met at the Shepparton Show 51 years ago this month.

They were just 15 and 13 but it was love at first sight.

“She was the first one and the only one,” Mr Fowler said.

“We’ve been married 46 years.”

September also marks Dementia Awareness Month, and Mrs Fowler was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease four and a half years ago.

“Both my daughters and myself noticed that she was doing a few things, like misplacing things and talking differently and saying things over and over again,” Mr Fowler said.

“We had a talk and we said ‘we better book her in to the doctor’s.”

Blood tests and a visit to a specialist confirmed Alzheimer’s. It hits pretty hard. She was only coming up to 60 years old,” Mr Fowler said. “I was still working at this stage.”

He’d been a Monash council employee for 26 years.

“They diagnosed her on the Thursday. She had to have 24-7 care so I went in on the Friday and gave notice,” he said.

“It’s gone downhill since then a fair bit.”

Mr Fowler said his wife’s speech, walking and memory had deteriorated.

“I do completely everything.

I shower her, dress her - even

combing her hair,” he said. “It’s just got a little bit harder each month.”

The Fowlers live in the Willow Lodge retirement village.

“There’s a few in here that had Alzheimer’s. People have been fantastic in here,” he said.

Their daughters and grandchildren have also been supportive.

“And we’ve had fantastic help from Alzheimer’s Victoria,” Mr Fowler said.

“It’s good to talk to other people who know what you’re going through.”

Alzheimer’s Australia Victoria CEO Maree McCabe urged people to use Dementia Awareness Month to become more informed about the condition.

Strong on causes of crime

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS FORMER County Court judge Michael Strong told a Noble Park forum that he felt a “dill” after becoming a victim of crime.

The recently-installed Neighbourhood Watch Victoria president had his mobile phone, prescription sunglasses and small change stolen from his car while he was out to dinner in St Kilda the previous evening.

Gallingly, he had broken two of the most important Neighbourhood Watch precepts - always lock cars and never leave valuables inside and in view.

“I did something particularly stupid last night,” he began his confession at the forum the next day.

He said he could have sworn he had

locked the car but there was no sign of a break-in.

“The only smart thing I did was I put a PIN on my phone.”

That loss of face hasn’t been Mr Strong’s only fight in the role.

At Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch’s AGM on Wednesday 16 September, Mr Strong revealed that soon after becoming president he found out the state office’s funding was about to expire.

He had been fighting for the past five months to claw back those cuts, securing enough interim funding to run a “stripped back” state office.

He spoke about his role on welfare agency Berry Street’s board, learning about some children’s terrible backgrounds.

“It’s not surprising that they meet the criminal justice system at a young age.”

For that reason, he found young offenders the hardest ones to send to jail - a course that would put even more challenges on their life path.

Mr Strong asked the forum’s attendees how many people did they want to lock away.

He said Victoria at one stage had the lowest crime rate and lowest incarceration rate in Australia.

That changed as successive governments “tried to out-do each other in being tough on crime”.

More than 6500 people are in Victorian prison cells - up 2000 from six years ago yet the crime rate has remained steady and recidivism was go-

ing up, Mr Strong said. Each prisoner costs the state $100,000 a year. He proposed investing that money into helping that prisoner’s family before it got to that stage.

In some of those circumstances, those prisoners grow up with a mum and dad who never had jobs.

The money spent may be able to turn those families around and save the expense of locking up that prisoner, his brother, his cousin.

On the other hand, Mr Strong said society needed to protect its children from predatory sex offenders.

“I am a fairly compassionate man but I had no trouble sentencing people who hurt children.”

Mr Strong opposed mandatory sentencing. He saw a Los Angeles County

Court trial where a man had pushed over a child in order to steal their pizza.

It was the accused’s third robbery and under mandatory sentencing the man got life imprisonment.

During the course of the evening he told of the case of a home burglar who left behind a phone bill with his name on it at the crime scene.

When the victim rang the number on the bill, the burglar answered “what do you want me to do?”

The burglar complied with the victim’s request to return his items straightaway and was arrested by police at the scene.

“They’re not very bright some of them,” Mr Strong said.

“Except for the one who got into my car last night!”

IN BRIEF Boy seeks refuge in park A 12-YEAR-OLD boy has told police that he had to hide in a park after he saw a man following him along Heatherton Road, Noble Park, about 3.15pm on Wednesday 9 September.

During the pursuit, the man allegedly asked the boy inappropriate questions.

The boy hid in the park while the man remained at the corner of Heatherton and Ellerton roads.

The man was described as 16 to 30 years old, about 165 centimetres tall, of medium build with skinny legs, dark skin, black hair, was unshaven, and speaking with an accent.

Lights shine on dangers TRAFFIC lights and roundabouts are set to boost safety at four Greater Dandenong intersections.

Greater Dandenong Council has received $1.1 million through the Federal Government’s Nation Building Blackspot Program.

It will install traffic lights at Corrigan Road and Henderson Road, Noble Park, with $281,000 of help.

A roundabout and parking lane on Railway Parade, Noble Park, between Chandler Road and EastLink received a $431,000 boost and there is now $293,000 for a new roundabout at Noble Street and Athol Road, Noble Park.

The roundabout at James Street and David Street, Dandenong, will receive modifications thanks to $109,000 in funding.

RESIDENTS will be kept updated on plans to put homes on two former Springvale South school sites.

Greater Dandenong councillors at their 14 September meeting agreed to seek a planning scheme change for the Keysborough College and Coomoora Primary School grounds on Coomoora Road.

The change would allow the Department of Education and Training to dispose of the land and make way for a “high-quality, integrated residential development that respects the established neighbourhood character”.

GREATER Dandenong wrote off almost $1.1 million in bad or doubtful debts last financial year.

This was almost $300,000 above the budgeted $818,000.

The council’s corporate services director Mick Jaensch said the figures primarily related to parking infringements older than five years or no longer collectable as per advice from the Infringements Court.

“The infringements are no longer collectable for reasons such as defendant deceased, order unenforceable, no goods to seize and invalid penalty,” he said.

Students’ rough night

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH WITH close to 23,000 people sleeping rough in Victoria every night, students from Noble Park added an extra 40 to that number for a night of fund-raising.

Raising $605 for St Vincent de Paul, Nazareth College students dusted off their sleeping bags and rugged up for a night out in the cold as part of the St Vinnies School and Community Sleep out.

Sadly, about 26 per cent of the homeless population in Victoria are under 18 years old, and in a fitting show of heart 40 Noble Park teenagers slept rough on Friday 28 August.

Raising awareness and funds for homelessness, the sleep out turned out to be a favourite among Nazareth College students.

Year 12 student Chris Maxwell said the night was an experience he would never forget.

“It really gave me a chance to see how much people actually care about those who are homeless,” he said.

Andrew Moore from the college said an “inspiring” group of senior students led other participants through activities during the night.

“The activities really made them think about what leads to homelessness and at the same time raised awareness of related issues in our community,” Mr Moore said.

Vincent Care chief executive John Blewonski said nights such as these were a fantastic way to change people’s perceptions on homelessness and who was affected by it.

“Homelessness includes anyone living in unsafe or insecure housing, such as boarding houses or shelters, and sadly due to domestic violence this includes a lot of women and children,” Mr Blewonski said.

Madeline Hately-Smith from Nazareth College said the sleep out was one of the best events she had ever been involved in.

“Everyone who attended got into the spirit of the night and were really receptive to all the activities that we ran,” the Year 11 student said.

Peaceful protest to bring back off-street racing called off

By CASEY NEILL EASTERNATS supporters have put a protest on the backburner after presenting a petition to Greater Dandenong Council.

Councillor Jim Memeti presented thousands of signatures supporting calls for the off-street racing event to return to Sandown Racecourse at the council’s Monday 14 Septem-

ber meeting. “I think these people need to go somewhere,” he said.

CEO John Bennie said the petition would be tabled at the next opportunity and the council would then consider the matter before establishing a position.

He said Sandown owner Melbourne Racing Club would have to apply for

a council permit to hold the event. Following three years of illegal ‘drag racing’ on the Dandenong Bypass each weekend, Keysborough South Action Group this month suggested running an offstreet racing program at Sandown Racecourse similar to one at Calder Park.

So Jon Davison, who established the Easternats

event in 1997, started a push for its return to give car enthusiasts an outlet.

Almost 600 people have shown their support on the Bring Back The EASTERNATS To Sandown Facebook event page.

But a “peaceful gathering” planned for the coming weeks is now on hold.

“At this stage we do not

believe that it is in the best interest to hold a public gathering,” Mr Davison said.

“We are seeking (the council’s) support to organise a meeting with the Melbourne Racing Club.

“We will be attending another meeting of council on Monday 28 September.

Mr Davison said the council claimed he hadn’t abided by his event permit in 2009, so Sandown terminated the agreement “We complied with everything that was asked,” he said. “I brought a lot of trade and commerce into the area.”

Council counts on public pressure RATE capping will affect Greater Dandenong residents more than they realise, according to councillor Matthew Kirwan.

The State Government is expected to cap local government rate rises to CPI from next financial year, cutting $45 million a year from the Greater Dandenong budget.

Cr Kirwan said most residents thought the situation would only require the council to “find a few efficiencies” and were shocked at the figure.

At the 14 September council meeting he called for public input on how the council should spend a reduced budget and whether it should apply for variations to secure funding for projects.

“Whether we get a variation to build a Keysborough South Community Hub or Dandenong Community Hub will depend on us showing that the Keysborough South and Dandenong Communities actually want them,” Cr Kirwan said.

He asked council staff to survey what approaches other councils were taking to involve their residents in rate capping considerations and bring a report to the February meeting.

Award fit for a king

By CASEY NEILL A DANDENONG North man has received Cambodia’s highest honour.

Thay-Horn Yim was among six people to receive a King’s award in June.

“That’s the highest award in the Cambodian system,” he said.

The Cambodian Buddhist Monk Council of Australia and New Zealand held an awards ceremony at Wat Buddharangsi Melbourne in Springvale South to honour the recipients.

Mr Yim said they’d all made a contribution to completing a new Prasok Park in Cambodia on 25 February. The council contributed $2 million.

He said Prasot Park was a replica of Angkor Wat in Siem Reap of Cambodia and commemorated the place where Buddha was born.

“The Cambodian people of Australia are very proud of Prasot Park and this endeavour has been a key focus for the Cambodian communities for many years,” he said.

“When we have a big project like that, normally the king would suggest that we reward people who’ve made a great contribution to Cambodia.”

Mr Yim said the award was usually only presented in Cambodia.

“Australians have never received the King’s award before,” he said.

“I never thought that I would get one as well. I only knew at the last minute.

“I feel really honoured.”

He’s been involved with the temple for almost 20 years.

“I was a Khmer Rouge survivor.

I lived in a refugee camp for two

“When I came to Australia I got my tertiary education - I got my degrees, my honours degrees.”

Mr Yim worked as a public servant, holding a senior position for more than 10 years, and has raised four children.

He has received the Victorian Government’s Award for Excellence in Multicultural Affairs, Centrelink’s National Award for Excellence in Multicultural Youth Service

and an AMES Humanitarian Award.

“I never expected this sort of thing,” he said.

“I want to give back. I got more than I bargained for.”

He said Australia’s “land of opportunity” tag rang true.

“We don’t have to worry about food for the next day,” he said.

“It’s important to go back to help communities, some of those migrants and refugees who can’t afford to pay.

“Thankyou to Australia for giving me the opportunity, a second

chance to live here and have a family, have a life. Now I have an opportunity to help to rebuild Cambodia.”

The council’s president, the Venerable Sovann Srey also received an award. He established organisation in 1995.

Along with the Springvale South temple’s Abbot Venerable Sudhep Nan, Venerable Srey among the most senior monks in Australia.

“They escaped to Thailand, so they were not disrobed by Khmer Rouge,” Mr Yim said.

Kids take over their class

By CASEY NEILL SILVERTON Primary students took charge of their classrooms to tackle environmental issues.

The Noble Park North school hosted its fifth annual Kids Teaching Kids conference on Friday 11 September.

About 200 children from nine schools came along to learn about problems affecting nature now and into the future.

The Kids Teaching Kids program raises awareness and drives action on local and global environmental issues, brings communities together to solve common challenges and help the next generation of leaders take responsibility for the future.

The conferences are designed to inspire students to learn more through real world examples and show them that they can have a positive impact on the world, starting in their own communities.

Reaching out to refugees

By CASEY NEILL FORMER refugee John Iramiyan is returning the favour to Australia’s newest arrivals.

He was appointed as Coles Noble Park’s store manager in October last year.

“They wanted someone to come in and support the team,” he said.

Mr Iramiyan decided the business would improve with a focus on people and reached out to the community.

He asked nearby Yarraman Oaks Primary School how he could help and a breakfast club was the answer.

“Six months later, we’ve got a really good program with them,” he said.

Twice a week the store supplies 20 to 30 kids with fresh milk, bread and fruit and has since launched a second breakfast club at Noble Park Primary School.

A work experience program to support the Dandenong and Noble Park language centres followed.

He now welcomes several refugees and migrants into the store each week.

“Every participant in the program gets a uniform and a name badge to really make them feel part of the team,” Mr Iramiyan said. “We make sure they are invited to all team member huddles and celebrations.

“We have a one-metre rule in our store, where if a customer is within one metre they turn around and say hello. “We get them to be comfortable about being uncomfortable.”

He said the students also learnt to communicate with staff and each other and to appraise their performance.

They spend time in different departments, are paired with a mentor, and go through the standard induction process before they hit the floor.

“While they’re here they’re part of the structure,” he said. Mr Iramiyan helps them to prepare a job application and encourages them to

apply for roles within the Wesfarmers umbrella.

“They’ve got a head-start,” he said.

John was born in Iraq, raised in Greece and arrived in Australia as a refugee in 1980.

“I’m in the best job and the best country in the world and I’ve got to give back,” he said.

“I remember how the doors opened for me.”

Ken thanks the course that got his life back on track KEN Weller was made redundant when his employer of more than 17 years recently shut down.

“It was like my world ended,” he said.

“I lost my job, I lost my car, I almost lost the place where I live, I lost my girlfriend and basically I lost the will to live.

“I’d go to bed on the Friday and I wouldn’t get up until Tuesday or Wednesday.

“I just didn’t see anyone, I didn’t speak to anyone.”

The Dandenong 57-yearold had applied for more than 100 jobs when his

Centrelink case manager encouraged him to sign up for a work education course.

“It changed my life. I don’t know where I’d be if it wasn’t for them,” he said.

Mr Weller’s two previous jobs were in production support.

“I kept machines running and relieved people for dinner break and tea break,” he said.

“So by the time I got my break I had it alone, and when I did my job I worked alone.

“I’ve been on my own for

the last 20 years, and you get used to being on your own.

“So you become like a turtle in a shell and that shell protects you.”

He credits an instructor at Complex Institute of Education with bringing him out.

“Catherine Winsall.

She’s the one that pushed me,” he said.

“I still have her fingermarks in my back!”

The Registered Training Organisation (RTO) runs job readiness programs from an office on Walker Street, Dandenong, and works with

employment service providers.

Mr Weller secured a work placement at Trade Secret in Dandenong Plaza and couldn’t praise his colleagues enough.

“They just helped me and because I’d been out of retail for maybe 35 years or more,” he said.

“It was just a joy to work with them.

“When you’re happy with your job and you just enjoy the company of the people you work with it’s very easy to go to work.”

The company asked him to stay on as a casual working a few hours three days a week.

“It’s a start,” he said.

“It’s a great place to work. I get to meet people and I get to interact with the public.

“I can now get up in the morning because I have Trade Secret. They’re my family now.”

Mr Weller now plans to complete responsible service of alcohol and photography courses.

GREATER Dandenong libraries will share a near-$1 million boost.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced the $927,267 in State Government funding at Dandenong Library during the Book Week celebrations.

The funds can be used for staffing, community programs, book purchases and technology upgrades.

Ms Williams said libraries were at the heart of communities.

“Libraries help foster lifelong learning, provide free ac-

cess to information and are a place for people to meet and engage,” she said.

“Locally, I know how many residents rely on and love our library services.

“This funding will help ensure that services like these can continue and grow.”

Dandenong was well placed going into the clash - bringing national champions Brandon White and Kurt Mutimer back into the line-up - with Mitch Cox (illness) and Sam Pickess the unlucky tandem to miss out.

A first-term shootout was about as good as it got for Dandenong throughout Saturday at Princes Park with Mutimer and unlikely forward target Kieran Collins - an All Australian full back - helping push the Rays ahead.

Lachie Batten led from the front through the midfield while the partly rearranged Dandenong defence - anchored by Jacob Weitering, Daniel Capiron and Brandon White - also held strong in the trenches.

The Stingrays kept playing musical positions throughout the day - putting Collins at both ends, Capiron and White onto the wing and eventually Weitering up forward to try and manufacture something of note.

The run and carry was strong for the Rays all afternoon, but no one seemed to spot up the next kick in the line, instead handing it back to the Ranges time-and-time again.

With a fleet of 16 and 17-year-olds taking it to their oppositional elders and then some, Eastern had control over the procession through the second and third terms towards the final fight of the TAC Cup season.

The only reason Dandenong had any chance entering the final term was Eastern’s failure to kick accurately.

It could’ve been all over early if Ranges had capitalised on the rampaging forward spree it created - booting 17 behinds to leave a few things to

work on ahead of this weekend.

But the Eastern force wasn’t the only side squandering chances, as Dandenong went missing in the ‘premiership quarter’ - going goalless.

It all but sealed the Stingrays’ fate in 2015 and despite some fourth-quarter heroics, it was too little too late to resurrect the flagging Dandenong chance.

The Stingrays rolled the dice in the last term to try and reel in the 31-point deficit - switching likely top draft pick Jacob Weitering (2 goals) to full forward. Weitering finished up his elite junior journey with two goals in a minute to give Dandenong one last glimmer of hope.

But Eastern fired off the nail-in-thecoffin to take the first spot in the TAC Cup finale.

“I think at the start our inability to use the ball the way we have all year,” Dandenong coach Craig Black reflected on the loss.

“We turned the ball over early then we were chasing from the start, so it was pretty tough from there on.

“When we had the ball we had opportunities to go forward, but then when we turned it over they just moved the ball really quickly… was unlike us as we usually start the games pretty well.

“Third quarter I thought we had a crack early, but couldn’t kick a goal…

they go down and kick one and took the momentum.

“Then in the fourth, we kick a couple of early goals and gain some momentum, but they were a good young team and took it up to us and had the better of us today which was disappointing.”

Black highlighted the efforts of defender Brandon White - earning the thumbs up for his early role negating TAC Cup leading goal kicker Blake Hardwick - as well as Liam McKay, Weitering and Jake Di Pasquale.

Looking back on what could have been proved tough in the moments after the loss, but Black thought the side had the potential to make a great impact on senior football throughout the country in years to come.

“At the moment we’re pretty disappointed - when you think you have a good team that had a chance of going all the way, not making it is disappointing, but hopefully in the next few years we can read up about these names playing AFL or even VFL footy,” Black said.

“They’re a really good bunch of kids and hope this spurs them on to get a bit of momentum in their careers when they look back at it.”

Despite the trying day and the bruising disappointment setting in, Dandenong’s final words on field for season 2015 were fittingly upbeat, uttered to the entire playing group by one of the club’s champions over the last three seasons - former skipper and hopeful AFL draftee Daniel Capiron.

“We’ll get through this together... we’re best mates and brothers.”

Eastern was well led up forward by resourceful tandem Callum Brown and Jaidyn Stephenson - who got off the chain to boot three apiece and lead the Ranges into the grand final - while Bryce Batty, Dylan Clarke and Aaron Cotte proved a handful.

Eastern will now face Oakleigh in a surprisingly All-Metro showdown on Sunday morning, 27 September from 11.05am at Etihad Stadium.

League’s top honour to Montreal

By JARROD POTTER PUTTING the last major SEABL award into his basketball trophy cabinet, Dandenong Rangers’ champion Daequon Montreal was awarded the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Montreal, 27, earned the SEABL MVP to edge out the likes of Cory Dixon, Deba George and former Dandenong Ranger Tony Lewis for the award.

After 100 SEABL matches, two conference titles and the 2013 SEABL championship and Hugh McMenamin Medal, Montreal was thrilled to accept the greatest individual league honour after a trying season for the Rangers.

“It was great - especially beating out my old running mate (Bendigo’s Tony Lewis),” Montreal said.

“We’ve had to deal with it throughout - I think through my first year we haven’t had the same team going into any season from start to finish we’ve either lost guys to college or guys

coming back from college, guys with injury and NBL commitments.

“It’s something we’ve learned to manage - we’ve always kept a strong core group of two-three-four players who’ve been there consistently training every week and just setting the bar so we have some backbone and consistency to go to every weekend.”

While the MVP is an honour he’ll never forget, Montreal admits it’s the team success that drives him and the sensational 2013 season remains his favourite to date in Australia.

“Obviously winning the MVP individually is a great achievement, but winning that championship with my team-mates - that was the guys’ first championship playing SEABL for a while - so delivering that as a group was by far the most special moment,” Montreal said.

“It’s been great (at Dandenong) getting to the final in my first year was a great accomplishment and you take it

for granted how hard it is to get there, let alone get back there the second year and win one.

“To fall short the last two years you just appreciate how hard it is to actually get to that grand final.”

Montreal’s hopes for his fifth year in Australia aren’t just focused on the SEABL court as he hopes to gain Australian citizenship and give his NBL chances a push as a domestic player rather than battling for import spots.

“I signed a two-year deal at the start of the year so I’ll be back with the Rangers in 2016,” Montreal said.

“There’s always (NBL) speculation, but as you and I both know if there’s no contract on the table and you’re not wearing the singlet it’s not happening.

He wanted to give special thanks to his wife Jamie Lee and daughter Keyana, for their immeasurable support as well as everyone involved at Dandenong - especially coach Darren Perry and trainer Daniel Fabien.

By JARROD POTTER WHILE individual acknowledgement isn’t a big deal for the Dandenong Stingrays, a star quartet nonetheless received extremely high praise at the TAC Cup’s Morrish Medal night.

Beaconsfield’s Bailey Rice (back pocket), Narre Warren’s Gach Nyuon (ruck), Kieran Collins (full back) and Jacob Weitering (centre half back) continued their stellar TAC Cup season with selection in the TAC Cup Team of the Year.

The four Stingrays earned their places in the illustrious line-up after impressive seasons in the competition, helping Dandenong push to second on the ladder and into a preliminary final this weekend.

“It’s very humbling to be seen as one of the better players in the TAC Cup,” Collins said.

“Really honoured to be placed as the full back of the Team of the Year… it’s awesome.”

Weitering and Collins were also presented with their All Australian jumpers after sensational AFL National Championships campaigns with Vic Country alongside Stingrays team-mate Gach Nyuon, who was unable to attend the awards on Sunday evening.

“It’s a massive honour,” Weitering said.

“It’s good that you get a little bit of reward for a consistent year of football, but at the end of the day we want to win a

premiership...”

In the Morrish Medal count, captain Lachlan Williams (9 votes) led all Stingrays with Josh Battle (6), Brandon White (6), Harry Prior (4) and Nyuon (4) also atop Dandenong’s list of 19 players who polled on the night.

Bunyip’s Tom Papley (8 votes) and Pakenham’s Matt de Bruin (4 votes) polled well for the Gippsland Power, which also had two Team of the Year nominees Ben Ainsworth (forward pocket) and Nash Holmes (interchange).

The Morrish Medal was won by Murray Bushrangers’ midfielder Clayton Oliver on 15 votes ahead of Eastern’s Darcy Crocker and Northern’s Jade Gresham (14 each).

Full On Bling heads the nomination list with a best time of 29.15, however the final field will not be determined until Sunday afternoon (after Journal press time) when six greyhounds - coincidently the bottom six on the order of entry - trial between races in order to try and improve their standings.

Sandown Racing and Media Manager Michael Floyd are excited by the quality of the greyhounds nominated for the series.

“It is a very open series, and all 13 nominated dogs are capable of amazing times and being crowned the 2015 Speed Star,” he said.

Disappointingly for greyhound fans, chasing sensation Fernando Bale was not among the final nominations. The six-time Group 1 winner will bypass the series in order to prepare for the Group 1 Adelaide Cup heats at Angle Park on Thursday 1 October.

“It’s purely timing,” said co-trainer Tom Dailly.

“He’s in the Traralgon Cup final on Saturday night, and there are a lot of big races coming up including the Adelaide Cup in a fortnight, then onto the Topgun and Melbourne Cup. “We discussed it a lot here and spoke to his owner Paul Wheeler and ultimately decided it would be in his best interests in the longer term to skip the Speed Star.”

Despite the absence of the white and brindle superstar, the club is confident of a spec-

tacular series of head-to-head races and some scintillating times.

“We’d have loved to see Fernando Bale add to his exceptional record at Sandown Park, but we understand and respect the decision of the kennel,” Floyd said.

“The series is unique, and will appeal to new racing fans… we can’t wait to see it come to fruition.”

The eight fastest qualifiers will race off in pairs with the winner of each match receiving $10,000, and the greyhound that records the fastest time picking up an additional $15,000.

A new twist of Faith

By JARROD POTTER BOWING out of elite basketball at the highest possible point, Dandenong SEABL captain Faith Probst farewelled the game with a 76-63 championship victory.

With 223 SEABL matches - four championships, four conference titles and countless defensive accolades across the seasons - Probst, 31, decided to call time on her sensational career.

While her numbers haven’t decreased over the years, Probst admitted her joy for the game had waned, and thought there was no better time to retire than after a championship victory.

“I feel like I don’t love the game as much as I should,” Probst said.

“I’m getting a bit older as well - I’m 31 - so I feel like there are other things I’ll be able to try, but I’m sure I’ll still be around watching.”

She wanted to retire quietly, but her coach Larissa Anderson put two-and-two together and drew the team’s attention to her farewell match.

“I can’t imagine a better way to bow out actually,” Probst said.

“Larissa asked me this morning if I was retiring because I didn’t want to make a big deal about it.

“Then I decided, and to actually win the game... I can’t think of a better way to go out with

such a great group of girls as well.

“I wanted to sneak away as that’s more my style… was actually crying… was thinking ‘it’s just a game’ but it’s such a massive part of your life, to let it go I guess you can’t not cry.”

Probst ended her final campaign with the same defensive prowess that she’s brought throughout her entire SEABL journey, clamping down on Kilsyth’s back-court trio Sarah Parsons, Cassandra Sant to register three points and seven rebounds.

In a fitting end, Probst reeled in one of her textbook, lunging rebounds late in the clash, before powering to the post to earn two free throws - what would turn out to be the last shots in a storied SEABL career.

“It’s our chemistry - we get along so well, in our early days we just always were together,” Probst said.

“Did absolutely everything together, and you can see just how well we got along on the court as well as off the court, and it’s just gelled for us.

“And for Larissa to keep us all together as well it’s a real credit to her… it’s an absolute blast.”

Anderson said no one should discount Probst’s achievements in the league and she’ll be greatly missed around the group next year.

“We’re going to miss Faith - she’s been an amazing person for the league and for us,” Anderson said.

Todhunter back with vengeance

By JARROD POTTER TURNING the tables on a nightmare basketball season, Dandenong Rangers’ guard Amelia Todhunter fought her way back on court to share the greatest prize of all.

Todhunter earned her second Barbara Barton Medal as the SEABL grand-final Most Valuable Player (MVP) - but compared to her stellar 2012 season, this time around was riddled by set-backs. She spent 13 weeks on the sidelines earlier this year with a knee injury - but nothing could stop her returning to the roster for a sensational finals’ campaign.

Helping Dandenong work its way to a SEABL East Conference title and make the SEABL championship match, Todhunter’s work in the finale at both ends of the court was exceptional.

Her trying 2015 season ended in the best possible way as Todhunter proved pivotal - Dandenong fighting off every Kilsyth come-back to take the 76-63 SEABL championship victory.

Todhunter displayed her SEABL class - stepping up to the big stage to rattle off 19 points, while constantly creating headaches in the backcourt.

Her tenacious attack left the Cobras on the back foot as she drove to the basket, hit the perimeter shots and generally terrorised the visitors.

Alongside long-time team mates Aimie Clydesdale, Alison Downie, Faith Probst and Clare Papavs, Todhunter earned another SEABL championship - her fourth - and was almost speechless when it came to the side’s success over the last six years.

“I am so excited- ecstatic - words can barely explain how I’m feeling,” Todhunter said.

“I have to give the girls all the credit - they got us through those 13 weeks I was out - Bree Whatman stepped up, Aimie Clydesdale killed it - have to definitely credit them for it.”

“I came into the game really nervous - mainly because we choked last year and the year before, so we really wanted to get the win - especially for Faith Probst’s last game.

“All the girls were in tears because we needed to do it for Faith and we did.

“We’re getting older and that experience is helping us, but our bodies are going backwards, so I think it’s sad as I love the girls so much - we’ll gradually start to see everyone retire but we’re seeing the young girls stepping up and coming through.”

Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson believed for Todhunter to get back on court this season is true testament to her fighting spirit.

JOBS growth in Greater Dandenong has reached the football coaching ranks with a pair of head coaching roles on offer at Southern Football League clubs.

Keysborough and Springvale Districts will be hunting down coaching talent this off season after Ryan Goodes and Brett Dunne respectively handed in their resignation notices.

The Burra - who finished fourth after enduring a difficult initial SFL season battling injury and the switch to Southern - will be on the hunt for its fifth coach in five years after Goodes announced he was stepping aside.

Personal reasons have taken the magnanimous playing-coach from the Burra’s top job, but in positive news it’s only the coaching role Goodes is leaving and not the club.

Just down the road, Springvale Districts is also on the hunt for a new coach after Dunne told the club his one year at the SFL Division-2 club’s helm would also be his last.

Dunne replaced John McTaggart this year and battled a trying season to get the Demons into eighth with a 4-14 record in the second division.

The new Audi TT stays true to its design traditions while taking on the latest automotive technology.

The tachometer and speedometer are displayed as small dial instruments on the right and left.

In the ‘Classic’ view, the middle window is smaller, and the instruments - with black scales, red needles and white numerals - are about the same size as typical analogue instruments.

The MMI system has been revised to ape smartphones where logic replaces static menu trees, and frequently used functions can be

THE new Audi TT harks back to the original design.

The fuel flap on the shoulder sports the characteristic TT design with embossed TT logo and the six bolts connect the ring of the fuel flap to the body.

This time around there is no fuel cap under the cover, rather the cap is built into the flap. The fuel nozzle is inserted directly into the tank neck in race car fashion.
