A BUSINESS case for a solution to the infamous Eight Mile intersection in Warwick is expected to be completed in January next year.

A spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Main Roads said that a planning project was due early next year.

“We’re currently undertaking a planning project to determine the

preferred option for this intersection,” a statement said.

“The planning is progressing, with one of the options under consideration involving an overpass for traffic travelling from Toowoomba to Warwick (passing over and then merging with the Cunningham Highway).

“The business case is due to be completed by January 2016.”

Springborg said that he was pleased the LNP’s planning was being continued by the Queensland Government.

“From my perspective, I’m pleased the planning process that we put in place in government is continuing. It is critical that something is done to make this intersection safe.

Police urge drivers to just lock up WARWICK experienced four car break-ins over the past weekend but police do not believe them to be related incidents.

On Friday sometime after 5pm and the early hours of Saturday morning, a car was broken into on Douglas Street in the driveway of a residence.

A GPS was stolen along with some other items.

Later that night on Cun-

ningham Street, sometime after 9.30pm, a radio was stolen from an unlocked car parked in the street.

On Saturday sometime after 10.30pm, a man heard his car door slam at his residence on Canning Street.

Rail project gains steam THE Inland Rail project has taken a huge leap forward with the presentation of the Inland Rail delivery plan.

The report identifies a construction cost of approximately $10 billion for the project that would enable freight trains to travel from Brisbane to Melbourne.

Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss even claimed the economy could be boosted by up to $22.5 billion.

The plan recommends construction of the rail to com-

mence and finish in the next 10 years with the project propped up by injections from the next federal budget.

It is hoped the 1700 kilometre track would revitalise country towns and boost the national economy.

It has been said that the construction of the project could create up to 16,000 jobs with at least 600 remaining upon completion.

By DANE LILLINGSTONE IT is the beginning of bushfire season and RACQ research has revealed that more than one-third of Queensland householders would not know what to do if their home was threatened by a bushfire.

The results were more concerning when it came to fire bans, with RACQ’s 2015 Bushfire Preparedness Index revealing that 47 per cent of Queenslanders said they had witnessed others ignoring total fire bans. An additional 8.9 per cent admitted they had ignored total fire bans themselves.

RACQ insurance communications executive manager Mike Sopinski said the results were concerning.

“It’s crucial those living in vulnerable communities have a bushfire survival plan in place so they know how to protect themselves and safeguard their property in case of a bushfire,”

“Residents should set out precisely how they and their family will respond to a bushfire emergency.”

Mr Sopinski said that preparing your home for bushfire threats was extremely important with results revealing that 32 per cent of householders were not clearing gutters and 27 per cent were not trimming tree branches and foliage.

“Flying embers are a major cause of homes catching fire in bushfires and with little or no rain, leaves and other materials built up in gutters become very dry and brittle, and act as readily ignitable fuel for embers,” he said.

The research also revealed that 42 per cent of householders believed current weather conditions had created a larger risk to their homes.

“This finding is not surprising given approximately 80 per cent of Queensland is

currently in drought and the strengthening El Nino effect is raising the prospects of above average bushfire risks,” he said.

Five lining up for Scott slot

By DANE LILLINGSTONE FIVE candidates will battle it out to replace Bruce Scott as the LNP member for the seat of Maranoa.

Warwick local David Littleproud will fly the flag for the Southern Downs in his pursuit to represent the LNP at the next Federal Election.

Mr Littleproud is the current Suncorp Regional Banking Manager and former Chamber of Commerce

president.

He will be up against Romabased Maranoa councillor Cameron O’Neil, regional banking manager Lachlan Douglas, Blackall grazier Alison Krieg and Charleville grazier Rick Gurnett.

The LNP announced that, much like the forthcoming Southern Downs election, voting will be done by post.

“Given the size of the Maranoa

electorate, LNP members will vote via a postal plebiscite to choose the new LNP candidate. As preselections are a matter for LNP members, neither the candidates nor the party are able to make any public comment until the process has concluded,” a statement said.

The ballot will close on 22 October and the new candidate will be announced on 23 October.

Warwick woman hits pedestrian

A 24-year-old woman has been charged after driving her car into another woman in Warwick yesterday.

The incident is alleged to have occurred around 12.10pm near the intersection outside the Cherry Tree when two women, believed to have known each other, became involved in an altercation where a cricket bat was used as a weapon.

It resulted in the woman driving her car into the other woman, also 24-years-old, and knocking her to the ground before turning around and attempting to hit her again.

The woman has been charged with acts intending to cause grievous bodily harm and will appear in Warwick Magistrates' Court on September 30.

Gifted young adults graduate Casey’s tips

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE Endeavour Foundation in Warwick has celebrated a graduation with its students.

On Monday 14 September four young adults celebrated the completion of the 10-week Community Learning Hub program with a presentation and morning tea.

The initiative of the program is on readying young adults with disabilities for the work force.

Over the two-and-a-half month program, the students learnt job readiness skills through job placements and work experience.

The students undertook three hour sessions in the program learning through workbooks and online activities.

There were also work experience placements with a local radio station, pet shop, Bunnings and other businesses.

Jesse Sue-Fong graduated from the program and gave a rousing and heartfelt speech at the ceremony.

“When I first came here, I felt very lost in a strange city. I felt very uncomfortable.

“My mummy died and it was very, very hard for me but after I moved here from Toowoomba, I came up here with my family, it was pretty hard,” he said.

“Then I got into Endeavour when I first met my friend Sue. “When I first saw her at my job, I did not know what I was getting myself into.

“I went in and I’m so glad I passed all my skills.

“I just want to say I love you all so much and I hope everything will go OK

Endeavour Foundation’s Service Development and Innovation Manager Chris Beaumont said it was an innovative and unique program that would look to expand in the future.

“The Work Readiness program is unique in the Warwick region as it fills a vital gap by providing an educational service that supports young people with a disability and others from various

backgrounds,” he said.

“We are focused on delivering a short-course to boost job skills and, in turn, will give participants the confidence to pursue the job they want.

“We are so pleased with the success of our pilot program and we are keen to expand it so more young people in the Warwick region also have an opportunity to learn crucial job skills.”

THE Stanthorpe Ambulance Station at Bridge Street celebrates its centenary this month and held an open day on Saturday as part of the celebrations.

The day was an opportunity for the community to get a glimpse of how patient care has advanced over the years with uniforms on display dating back to 1902. The station was built in one day by 23 people and lead by Superintendent Bert.

This was followed by a second in 1920 on the corner of Marsh and Corrundum streets and a third within the hospital grounds in 2011.

Stanthorpe Acting Officer in Charge Penny Lang said it was a special moment for both the ambulance and Stanthorpe communities.

“It’s pretty special for us. The day went really well and was well supported by the community,” she said.

“(The station) started off as a three month trial under Warwick and then they decided to make it a fulltime independent station in 1915.”

Ms Lang said that the advancement in technology has been significant to ambulance services and paramedics.

“Where we’ve come from to where we are today with the new Mercedes with a powerlift stretcher, from a litter cart with two wheels where people would be pushing and pulling that with the patient inside, it’s been quite a feat,” she said.

“We’ve come a long way and, obviously, with various equipment that has been used over the years that has changed, obviously making life easier for paramedics and treatment of patients as well.”

Ms Lang was optimistic when asked if a second centenary would ever be on the books.

“Well, let’s hope so,” she said.

Relay is a wrap THE 2015 Southern Downs Relay for Life has wrapped up for another successful year with just over $26,000 raised from 18 teams and 177 participants.

The Career Council Queensland event was held at Redbacks AFC Oval from 3pm on Saturday to 9am on Sunday with an opening ceremony consisting of a survivors and carers walk.

There was also a candlelight ceremony at night with entertainment throughout the event.

Southern Downs Relay for Life will be held in Stanthorpe next year before returning to Warwick in 2017.

Keep it positive I LOVED reading D. Jess’s letter today (Keep it Positive, SFT 10 September) about how beautiful our region is. My family and I were born and raised in Warwick and as kids in the '70s-'80s we saw a different bush walk, swim or camp every weekend. We are re-opening our eyes to our own backyard, with our children now, after years of having work and finances take over our lives.

Enough is enough ... my sister and I have begun “Mystery trips and picnics” with our children in our lovely area and the passengers have to sit back and wait to see where we go each weekend.

Negativity I BELIEVE it necessary to have the attached letter printed, given recent developments since my last letter.

All of the negative publicity has damaged our region. It is now time to proceed to the front foot and try to have capable persons nominate for council.

I am now, as certain as I can be, that our new council CEO has the correct financial policy in place to restore confidence in the council. However he will need the backing of capable councillors in the new council from March next year.

Their research continues to demonstrate that ‘Big is not always Better’. Any of their research work and the findings thereof are based on truly independent factual data and information on service delivery to community from councils, state and other reliable sources.

There is no doubt of its veracity. The empirical evidence indicates there is no doubt that the forced amalgamations to bigger councils did not achieve the expected results in many or even most councils.

Two weeks ago SOS, via their QLGRA delegates, asked the Queensland Local Government Director of Program Implementation and Review Max Barrie to urgently consider an independent review of the Queensland amalgamations. We also met with the Shadow Minister for Local Government with the same request.

At both meetings to which we had been invited, our requests were received favourably and it was agreed that a proper independent review should be a real option.

The director agreed that the council debt increase was not a good indication. He said local government debt had increased from $2 billion in 2008 to $5 billion now and is projected to exceed $20 billion by 2020 - only four years away. Something has to be done. We all should be asking the government and the Council of Mayors what they are going to do about it!

GrainX is a work in progress and do intend to, in their own good time, handle grain in a township with compliance!

Allora can of course vote to a man and woman, for a whole new team of councillors who are now paying the unreasonably extravagant rates of 2015, and will gladly vote an exodus for the big spenders currently in office.

Not by postal voting though, a ballot box must be demanded.

By DANE LILLINGSTONE STANTHORPE hosted a Walk 4 William event in what marked the one year anniversary of threeyear-old William Tyrell’s disappearance.

William disappeared from his Nana’s home on the New South Wales mid-north coast last year.

The walk at Rotary Park on Leslie Parade on Saturday 13 September was a show of community solidarity with a crowd of about 200 turning out.

Those who wanted to show their support were asked to wear a red and blue or a Spiderman costume and give a gold coin donation for the walk.

The event was organised by the efforts of Kylie Brady, Emma McConville and Kellie Mandavy.

Kylie said the event was originally conceived by the trio five or six weeks ago.

“It was, basically, to raise awareness, any fundraising was just a bonus,” she said.

“At this stage it’s not final yet but we’ve counted $2173 so far. It will be banked into the Where’s William account, to be used by the family and that particular campaign.”

ALLORA State School celebrated the beginning of Spring with their annual Spring Fair on Sunday.

There was an all-day barbecue, morning and afternoon tea stalls, showbags and market stalls throughout the day.

One lucky little girl even won a bike, with Matilda Lever taking home the big prize this year, sponsored by Redback Bikes.

Parents and Citizens President Jeff Lack says it gets bigger every year.

“This event is a great way for the whole community to welcome in the new season and to showcase our great school,” he said.

“We have built upon the Spring Fair for over five years now and each year it seems bigger and bigger.”

Profits raised from the event are going towards the Year 7-10 under-cover eating area.

RESIDENTS have been warned to be careful of swooping magpies as their breeding season heats up.

Magpies are aggressive for about six weeks of the year around August and September when they have chicks in the nest. The birds are known to fiercely defend their nests and territories by swooping unsuspecting victims.

According to a Brisbane study, nine per cent of magpies are aggressive towards people.

Southern Downs Regional Council’s Manager Community Facilities Michael Bell said the beginning of Spring was a danger period with more people outdoors due to the warmer weather.

“Many people enjoy going for a walk and if they venture through magpie territory they may be considered a threat by the magpie.

Taking simple precautions is the best way to avoid the dreaded swoop,” he said.

“If a particular bird is harassing you repeatedly, choose a different route for the next few weeks, wear a broad-brimmed hat and if you are riding a bike, make sure you wear your helmet.”

Mr Bell said that at this stage there have been no reports of problem birds.

“However Council’s Parks team are aware of one current magpie hotspot in Canning Street Warwick, between Percy and Pratten streets, and signage has been erected.

The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection has some suggestions to protect against magpies: - Wear a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses, - If you are riding your bike through an area and getting swooped, get off and walk, - Take alternative routes during breeding season, - Walk in a group, - Don’t retaliate against a swooping magpie - it can make it worse.

WARWICK Art Gallery will present a travelling exhibition highlighting the potential of beautiful materials and the imagination.

Starting on Thursday 17 September, the State of the Art Quilt exhibition will showcase the fabric works of art created by the art quilt subgroup of the Queensland Quilters Guild.

The Queensland Quilters Guild aims to promote the art and craft of patchwork and quilting to bring together people who are interested in the craft and encourage and maintain high standards of workmanship and design in traditional and contemporary work.

Last year the guild celebrated its 30th anniversary and currently has a membership of more than 400 quilters.

Gallery director Karina Devine is looking forward to installing the exhibition featuring the finest art quilts in the state.

“An art quilt pushes the boundaries of the traditional style of quilting where the artists follow a pattern and use one type of fabric,” Ms Devine said.

“Art quilts are more experimental and tend towards the exploration of an idea or bringing into play a diversity of materials.”

State of the Art Quilt is an annual exhibition that highlights the potential of the art quilt.

The works on display were preselected by Brisbane based artist, teacher and curator Sue Dennis.

There are 21 art quilts in the exhibition which has travelled to galleries throughout south east Queensland including Caboolture, Childers, Bribie Island and Redlands.

The art quilts feature rubbings, hand painting, thread painting, felting, use of fabrics other than cotton, hand-dyed fabrics, stamping and a whole lot more.

Mt Gordon yard sale WARWICK State High School’s Mt Gordon campus is having a yard sale this week.

The children at the school have been learning real world skills with construction and work experience.

They are selling furniture, timber, bike frames, a trampoline, speakers, chairs, basketball equipment and building project equipment.

They will also be selling items, main-

ly furniture, handmade by the boys.

Teacher Aide Cathy Rosetta said it was a learning experience for the children.

“They’ve got it really well set up.

They’ve been working hard out here,” she said.

“It’s giving them a good retail education. They’re learning retail skills and social skills.”

The yard sale will continue on Thursday and Friday from 10am-3pm.

Squadron on trail

MEMBERS of 10 Squadron from Adelaide recently came to Warwick to visit Mount Superbus and the wreckage of crashed Lincoln bomber.

The Lincoln A73-64 crashed into the mountain on 9 April 1955 as it was conducting a mercy flight to transport a newborn baby in need of a blood transfusion from Townsville to Eagle Farm.

Lieutenant John W. Hall led the recent expedition with the aim to assess the condition of the trail in hope of making it an annual trip as a commemoration.

“The trip was a huge success and we really enjoyed our time in Warwick,” he said.

“The people, food and accommodation were all top notch.

Even the weather co-operated.

“Johno Felton went out of his

way to make sure we were well prepared for the hike. He led us to the trail head and stood by until we returned.”

Johno Felton wants to make the trail part of tourism in the Southern Downs.

“People want to walk there,” Johno said.

“You can go to Warwick Visitor Information centre and you can get a copy of a map and navigation data.”

Johno said anyone wanting to follow the trail would need to contact Killarney police on 4664 1320 and leave their details as well as what marking tape or spray paint they’ll be using.

“We need to look at getting a bulldozer and clearing the path.

It will wreck your car otherwise,” he said.

Members of 10 Squadron said they would be returning to the Southern Downs next year.

This cartoon art fun is for everyone WARWICK Art Gallery has invited talented film and animation artists to teach workshops for young people and adults during the school holidays.

DLux Media Arts are one of Australia’s longest running screen and media arts organisations and they have vast experience delivering workshops to gallery clients.

Andrew Burrell is an independent contemporary arts practitioner with strong history in real-time 3D and interactive audio installation and teaches workshops for DLux Media Arts.

Andrew’s first Warwick workshop will focus on recording material and manipulating footage by learning to slow it down, speed it up, pause and reverse it.

Students will also learn about animation including how to create an animation using an ipad.

DLux Media Arts will provide a full lab of equipment

The Monster logo. including iPads with relevant applications on them for participants to use.

Andrew’s second workshop will introduce Geocaching which is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices.

Using the ‘Aurasma’ augmented reality application, and the physical environment of the gallery and it’s collection as a playing field, participants will create an adventure game with a difference.

Phil Judd is a Brisbane based cartoon artist who specialises in teaching basic drawing concepts and enabling participants to create their own cartoon character.

Phil uses a step by step process to teach the basic concepts that are then used by the attendees to create their own original cartoon images.

Phil will offer two different cartoon drawing workshops for children aged six to 12 years and a more advanced class for participants aged 13 years and over.

The workshop program begins on Tuesday 22 September with a small fee to cover the cost of materials and equipment.

Two teams to face the sudden death

By CASEY O’CONNOR AS expected, round two of the NRL finals delivered some thrilling games leaving rugby league fans eager for the next episode of the 2015 rugby league story.

We are left with six teams - two safe - the Broncos and Storm but the question on everyone’s lips is who will be left standing after this weekend.

Melbourne earned themselves the weekend off and booked a preliminary final in their own backyard at AAMI Stadium when they ended the Roosters 12 game winning streak.

The Storm showed all of their class and experience as they dictated the pace of the game from the opening whistle.

It was obvious they had done their homework on the Roosters, had a plan and were going to stick to it. In the end they came away with a grafting two point win.

Despite losing the battle the Roosters produced the try of the season in the latter stages of the game when a Michael Jennings break resulted in youngster Jackson Hastings showing football guile beyond his years to wrong foot the opposition and put Shaun Kenny Dowall over for a try in the corner.

It was a try that had commentators and fans gasping. It was not enough however as Melbourne proved once again why they have been one of the most consistent teams in the past decade.

The Roosters now face sudden death against arch rivals the Bulldogs.

Des Hasler once again has the Doggies on a roll at the right time.

They scraped in to week two of the finals on the back of a golden point field goal from Josh Reynolds after a forty twenty attempt from Dragons Gareth Widdop went awry.

Throughout the game the Dragons were unable to capitalise on good field position and an excellent completion rate in the face of some outstanding goal line defence from the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs faithful will be on tenterhooks with both their enforcers Frank Pritchard and Sam Kasiano in hot water and facing the judiciary.

Both the Dogs and the Roosters have problems with their halves combinations. The Roosters will

be sweating on the return of Mitchell Pearce.

The Bulldogs at times looked flat and lacking in options without their regular No. 7 Hodkinson while both sides have some niggling injury worries.

In a game of such importance neither team will leave anything in the tank. I am leaning slightly towards the Minor Premiers in what should be another sensational game.

The Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys and the Suncorp crowd turned on a spectacle worthy of any grand final on Saturday night in what was the game of the season thus far.

It was a game where the Cowboys dominated territory and the Broncos dominated defence.

The Cowboys were left to rue a couple of missed opportunities in the first half as the steely Brisbane defence held out against their desperate attacking raids late in the second half.

This game was a showcase of all that is good about rugby league when it is played well.

There had to be a winner and despite most of the second half being played in their territory, Brisbane showed great grit and were rewarded with a 16-12 win, a week off and a preliminary final at Suncorp.

The Cowboys must now regroup as they prepare for sudden death against the Sharks at 1300 Smiles on Saturday night.

Cronulla have defied all the odds and the naysayers to come from the wooden spoon department to top shelf in a season.

On Sunday, after a promising start to the season the 2014 premiers Souths bowed out of the premiership race at the hands of Cronulla.

Injuries and suspensions finally took their toll on the Bunnies as the Sharks made the first half a one act affair.

They were fast, enthusiastic and very hungry as they completely overpowered their opponents and dominated the middle of the field.

The Bunnies bounced back in the second half but the jury remains out on whether or not the Sharks took their foot off the pedal conserving themselves for their clash against the Cowboys.

There is no doubt the Cowboys will be full of respect for the Sharks.

They have met twice this season and the Sharks have come away with bragging rights on

both occasions and hold a handy margin in the head to head clashes.

They are definitely a bogey side for the Cowboys.

Cronulla fans are breathing a sigh of relief as serial pest Michael Ennis escaped suspension after pleading guilty to a grade one dangerous contact charge.

For the club that is yet to win a premiership it has been an amazing year.

Twelve months ago Paul Gallen was serving a drugs suspension and Shane Flanagan was banned from coaching.

The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority’s investigation into the supplement program at the club seemingly would not go away and they were the NRL wooden spooners.

Twelve months on, the Sharks are more than ready to rumble in a semi-final showdown.

It is an understatement to say both sides have plenty to play for.

The Cowboys look to have been robbed by dodgy calls at the pointy end of the season in the past two years while the Sharks are looking for their fairy-tale to continue.

It will be a game of almost Origin proportions as the NSW warrior Gallen leads his troops against the Maroons magic men Thurston and Scott.

The Cowboys’ Michael Morgan will strip fitter here after returning from injury last week and that will be a plus for the home-side.

The NQlanders will have a fight on their hands but I think they will be more than ready to reverse the trend this season and reel in the Sharks in what is sure to be a game of attrition.

Only two games this weekend but we will be treated to some outstanding football as the march towards the grand final gathers momentum.

I HAVE to admit that I was never aboard the Hayne-plane when Jarryd Hayne was an Eel. Of course being a dyed in the wool Maroon definitely not when he donned the Sky Blue jersey however I have always acknowledged that he possessed extraordinary talent. What Hayne has just achieved in making the squad of the San Francisco 49ers is however remarkable. The outstanding athletes that play among the mere mortals on the football field often make code hopping looking relatively easy, however Hayne’s efforts are extraordinary. He is one of those players you watch and wonder why it is opponents have such difficulty tackling - slippery as an eel perhaps - but more so elusive and strong; quick and agile. These are the traits that the NFL fans are getting a look at. Sure he muffed his first touch on the big stage but I am certain that will soon be forgotten although it is sure to make the highlights’ reel of his NFL career. Hayne took a big gamble - he put it all on the line to pursue a dream, walking away from a very lucrative NRL career. It could have so easily all gone south however this is a bloke who is as capable of making tough decisions and working hard as he is talented.

There is much speculation now about others who may be lured to the NFL. Personally I doubt there are many who could make the transition as seamlessly or who would be willing to take such a gamble. The one thing Hayne has done has showcased the talent that is in the NRL and rugby league ranks on the world stage after all it is the “Greatest Game of All.” I’m not quite on the Hayne-plane yet - perhaps just on the wing. Now I have a good reason to watch another sport and try to understand what looks to be a complex game - albeit a little odd. But then for many of us - AFL was once just aerial ping pong and T20 hit and giggle. Situations and circumstances certainly make us all look at things and people differently.

- Casey BILLYCART BASH A BIG HIT ORGANISERS were overwhelmed at the response to the inaugural Ballandean Billycart Bash as over 100 Billycarts rolled in last Sunday. I recall (dimly) my days of Billycart racing at Ballandean and I can assure you I saw none of the fruit cases on wheels that I recall last weekend. There were Batmobiles, Ferraris and prototypes of all shapes and sizes. I suspect that there were plenty of dads and grandads out there who spent hours and hours in the shed or workshop trying to perfect their designs. Some were definitely bordering on Big Boys toys and the kids as well as the adults were loving it. Chris Haynes won the final of the Open event clocking up speeds in excess of 40kms an hour as he flashed past the Ballandean Pyramid. Another rev head getting in touch with his inner kid was Ron Wilson was clocked doing 46km/h by the police radar. Chris Haynes’ machine was developed from a couple of mountain bikes and a strategically and aerodynamically placed drum.The school challenge went the way of the hosts Ballandean with Principal Nathan Brown hanging on to beat Glen Aplin Rival Sean Cole. Lightning McQueen received the prize for the best presented cart which was a joy to the eye.

There is now to be a great deal of interest expected in the Wallangarra Billycart racing which is only a month away. It was great to see kids and adults out enjoying the experience. There were a few mishaps but no major injuries and as I recall a little gravel rash and a few scratches were always worn as a badge of honour.The major casualty of the day appeared to be the drone which spent the day following the action on the track and swooping low over the spectators. It came to grief on

WATTLES KEEPING A LID ON BIG WIN DEFENDING TRL premiers Wattles Warriors booked themselves a place in the 2015 TRL grand final with a 62-24 win over arch rivals and Gatton Hawks last weekend. The win puts the defending premiers straight through to the TRL grand final in a week’s time. Outside back Michael Purcell continues to impress since joining the Warriors and along with Joel Koina ran in three tries apiece. Koina, who has had a great season, opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Gatton almost immediately struck back to level the scores. Purcell scored the next two tries and Wattles held a handy 26-6 lead that half time. After the break the Warriors picked up where they left off scoring two quick tries to push the score out to 38-16. Gatton tried to mount a challenge hitting back with two tries to take the score to 38-18, however Wattles were far too strong right across the paddock and closed out the game scoring another 24 points. It was an emphatic victory and while they are only one win away from back to back premierships they are not getting carried away. Wattles head to the grand final as warm favourites but coach Luke Duggan is keeping a lid on things, saying that the big win was a case of everything falling in to place in the game. The Gatton Hawks play Dalby Diehards on Sunday in the preliminary final after Dalby upset the more fancied Highfields 26-22 in the second semi final. Sunday’s winner will meet Wattles in the TRL grand final.

Ross Kingston also had a fine round - with a score of 21 points he was on the verge of returning to the halcyon days of his single figure youth. Run down balls went to Kath Morrison and Garry Adcock (18) and Leon Sticklen, Mal Crawford, Brett Donovan, and Col Smith who all finished with 17. Ross Kingston capped off his good round by collecting the nearest to the pin on 11.Charlie Morrison and Greg Wallace picked up the nearest to the pin at 13 and 16 respectively. GREENKEEPERS REVENGE POPULAR THE annual Greenkeepers Revenge match proved as popular as ever with 51 golfers lining up to be in the running for the trophies provided

A time sheet has also started for the popular Westpac Warwick Invitational golf day on Friday 16 October. The hundred dollar day is a great fund-raiser for the club as well as an opportunity to enjoy a great lunch on the deck and even a few quality beverages throughout the day and there’s golf too what’s not to like? It has been great to see some new blood (fresh meat?) around the club lately and current members are encouraged to politely assist anyone you see on the course (especially Saturday afternoons and Sundays) with etiquette and course care. Not everyone starting out knows everything about the game and its nuances. There is a lot to remember so if they’ve forgotten a sand bucket offer them yours, if they haven’t raked a bunker show them how - let’s give them a hand and keep them coming back.

MALLETERS BUSY PLAYING numbers were a little light at Association Croquet with several members travelling however two entertaining games were played on Tuesday morning. Andrea Denkewitz and Jenny Tunbridge were no match for the pairing of Carol Verwey and Grace Howard who won 26-17. In the second game Margaret Dickenson played well to score a solid 26-19 over Val Richardson and Heather Widderick. Conditions are now ideal on the greens and new players are welcome to come and join the crew on Tuesday mornings. This week players will be off to Warwick on Thursday for the Warwick club’s annual Friendship day. Numbers at Hoop runners are also suffering the travelling complaint. Elaine Brown, Shirley Evans and Dianne Wren played the first game of doubles, with Shirley required to play two balls.

The score was close with Evans taking the game 13-11, and top scored with one ball scoring eight hoops. Judy Lock played in the second game.

Shirley Evans once again dominated with a top score of seven hoops and taking out the game 13 9. Hoop runners are also looking for new players now the weather is kinder. CLUB FITTING SCHEDULED THE Pro Shop at the Warwick Golf Club is running demo/club fitting days on Friday 9 October from 2pm to 5pm with Callaway’s Dan Barclay and Thursday 22 October from 9am to noon with Mizuno’s Jake Hartvigsen. At both of these demo days the reps will have the latest equipment, launch monitors and new releases and will work with you to find what clubs suit you best. There are limited spots so book at the pro shop as soon as possible if you’re thinking about improving or upgrading your kit.

TENTERFIELD RETURNS TO CRICKET COMP TENTERFIELD will make a return to the Stanthorpe Cricket Association after a hiatus of more than a decade. Tenterfield for the past few seasons have played a social midweek competition and organisers are confident they will be more than competitive against the Stanthorpe teams. The inclusion of Tenterfield will see the Stanthorpe Cricket Association hold a five team (Tenterfield, RSL, Wanderers, Souths and Valleys) four round competition this season. President Tim Harslett said the competition would include one round of T20 competition with some games played on Friday night under lights. Tenterfield would also host some games at their home ground Shirley Park. Harslett said the turf wickets at both the CF White and Sheahan Oval were looking in great condition and should be in perfect order for the opening of the competition on October 3. He said he was looking forward to the inclusion of the Tenterfield team which should provide a boost to the local competition. Stanthorpe expects to field representative teams in both the Davis and Mitchell Shield competitions this season.

The four ball Ambrose format which attracted 49 members, 49 nonmembers and 10 juniors was a great success.

Scores ran close all day as cards were handed in.

The best nett was the team of Wayne Watt, Peter Hynes, Chris Hynes and Joshua Hynes with a score of 55.25 ahead of runners-up Scott Williams, Trent Watts, Anthony Austin and Paul Eldridge who scored a creditable 55.375. STEELE WINS SPORTERS NORM Steele clocked up a win at Sporters on Sunday defeating runner-up Dick Hilton. Rundowns went to Jim McPherson and Paul Armstrong. Jim McPherson hit the ball very well to take out the best gross and also won the pro-pin.

Zamprogno. Andy White and Dale Barker also proved too strong for team Parker C Parker and R Parker with a 28-5 win. Brian Wilmot and Keith Mungall defeated Atillio Zamprogno and Quinton Stanley 18-12. In a much closer game Paul Zamprogno and Len Covill defeated B Brown and Rod Newlands 17-14.

There were two thrilling games in the semifinals.The pairing of Covill and P Zamprogno defeated Wilmot and Mungall 19-14. In the second semi-final Empen and Thomas defeated White/Barker 15-14 in a tie break. In the final to be played this Saturday Len Covill and Paul Zamprogno will come up Wayne Thomas and Kurt Empen. Watts returned a score of nett 64 to claim the day by four shots. Bob’s form has been slowly on the rise and is expected to just get better. Stephen Kay had next best score of 68 to claim the runner-up prize. Margie Locke also returned a nett 64 to win the ladies event by an impressive seven shot margin. Nikki Rossow has steadily improved her game since starting to play competition golf and finished in second spot with a creditable nett 71. Pin shots went to Stephen Kay at 3/12 and Greg Yap at 17. Neta Thouard collected the ladies pin at 3/12 and the approach at 17. Luke Reardon claimed the pro-pin at 1/10 and the birdies nest, Matt Waterworth held the pro-pin at 5/14 and Max Hunter claimed 9/18. On Sunday there was a chance for some players to get their name engraved on the trophy for the club foursomes championships for both men and ladies. The men’s event was sponsored by Andersens and the team of Matt Waterworth and Mick O’Brien claimed the A grade title after shooting a round of 122 shots for the 27 holes. The late pairing of Keith Barnett and Max Hunter earned best nett score for the day and after some detailed examination of the handicaps, they were also awarded the B grade division championship. The ladies event, sponsored by Granite Belt Brewery, was won by the team of Mandy Benussi and Hannah Reeves with a score of 132 shots for the 27 holes. Best nett went to the team of Neta Thouard and Lorraine Evans. This Saturday is the popular Laurie Newley Memorial Day, a single Stableford sponsored by the Newley family.
