Mayor vote ‘threat’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A DISCUSSION paper released as part of a state review into local councils questions the effectiveness of Geelong’s directly elected mayoral model.

The paper also questions whether the act of parliament authorising the directly elected mayor should remain separate or be incorporated into the Local

South Barwon liberal MP Andrew Katos feared the Andrews Labor Government wanted to do

away with the directly elected mayor. “The Andrews Government looks like it wants to make significant changes to Geelong, possibly going back to the old model - that’s my suspicion,� Mr Katos said.

“Some in the Andrews Government are not supportive of the directly elected mayor concept and want to return to the old days of backroom deals and shenanigans to elect the mayor of Geelong. That would be disastrous. “I have no doubts that some in council, particularly from the

Labor side of politics, have been under orders to make the directly elected mayor look as bad as possible. They deliberately want to make Geelong look like a basket case. “I agree a review is needed and the model needs to be looked at but the concept is good

and should stay. “People want to see a genuine vision that seeks the best for Geelong, with likeminded candidates who share that vision. “If we stay how we are it can blow up the whole council.�

Committee for Geelong chief Rebecca Casson said the review also left the door open for the model to be improved.

Phil Jarratt wrote on surfing website Swellnet that the Torquay-born surfing giantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s corporate woes had already produced â&#x20AC;&#x153;huge layoffsâ&#x20AC;?.

More job cuts at Quiksilverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Torquay base were on the way, he warned.

The Independent reported last October that private investment firm Hadrian Capital Management had predicted Quiksilverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s demise â&#x20AC;&#x153;within monthsâ&#x20AC;?.

off bankruptcy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The tragic inevitability of it all did not diminish the tragic reality of the end of a 45-year reign for the greatest surf brand of them all,â&#x20AC;? Mr Jarratt said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Of course, the spin doctors jumped in immediately with assurances that this was merely a clever strategic move.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Jarratt said Quiksilver, as a publicly listed company on the New York stock exchange, owned the worldwide brand, with Australia and Europe as subsidiaries. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In a situation as serious as this no area of operation, no colonial outpost is spared the knife, no matter how clinically correct

the cuts may be.â&#x20AC;?

But Mr Jarratt said Quiksilver could still be saved because Chapter 11 bankrupcty proceedings in the US were specifically designed to allow companiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; resurrection.

Despite his efforts to downplay the impact, Bannockburn’s Bill Simpson was hurting underneath after experiencing a second redundancy in Victoria’s tough manufacturing industry.

Mr Simpson was a boilermaker at Ford for 24 years before losing his job when the company announced the closure of its car-making divisions, to be finalised next year.

Now he’s reliving the nightmare after finding out this week that he was among 125 redundancies at BAE’s Williamstown shipyard.

“It’s a disgrace that the government let the motor industry go down the toilet and now it’s happening again. It’s very sad and unnecessary,” he said.

“You try to stay upbeat but you go through a range of emotions. You tell yourself that one door closes and another one will open but I’ve forgone a really great job with a great bunch of blokes and, yes, they were great wages.

“I got tapped on the shoulder but in a way I knew it was coming. I still have a mortgage but some of the young guys are very stressed - they have big mortgages and commitments.

“All of a sudden they’re faced with the prospect of having to sell their house. The banks are not going to wait till they get another job.

“Men don’t wear hearts on sleeves and often tend to suffer in silence, so it’s not a good situation.”

The Independent revealed last month that dozens of former staff from Geelong’s Alcoa and Ford plants faced redundancy again after finding new jobs with BAE Systems over the past year.

Mr Simpson said he was undergoing the usual employment transition courses and considering BAE’s retraining options.

“In the end they did the right thing by us, so I have no gripe with BAE in any way.”

He blamed the redundancies on a lack of government planning and a failure to put in place new shipbuilding contracts in time.

“They must be as frustrated with the government as we are. It’s frustrating because both political parties are playing the blame game.

“From where I’m sitting they’re just pathetic.

They need to show some leadership and make a decision so we can get on with it.

“If they made a decision I wouldn’ be where I am. I can’t understand what’s so difficult about putting pen to paper and signing some contracts.”

BAE Systems blamed the redundances on a continuing decline in work as existing projects neared completion without new federal contracts in the pipeline. Almost 500 staff had been made redundant since October, the company said.

But the Government said the inquiry report identified “comprehensive work” under way at Anglesea to protect residents and the environment this summer.

“The independent report finds (that) Alcoa has either implemented, or is in the process of implementing, a range of fire minimisation strategies at the Anglesea Mine that are effective, practical and sustainable,” the Government said.

“The report also finds the mine is being competently regulated by Government agencies.”

ALCOA has “effective” practical and sustainable” strategies to minimise the risk of a coal-seam fire at Anglesea, according to State Government.

The Government said a Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry report on Alcoa’s Anglesea facility should reassure the community ahead of the bushfire season.

Alcoa has initiated the fire strategies as it begins remediating the coal mine and power station site after closing its operations.

Residents have expressed concern about the risk of a coal-seam fire similar to the disaster at Hazelwood early last year. The fire burned for 45 days, sending smoke and

TAC chief Joe Calafiore called on Geelong community leaders for their support, acknowledging that Towards Zero was an ambitious target.

“But unless we’re working towards the highest possible benchmark, Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast residents will continue to lose loved ones to road trauma and we can never accept that,” he said.

“If we’re not aiming for zero we’re saying to ourselves that there’s an acceptable level of road trauma. It’s up to all of us, as leaders in the Geelong community, to work together Towards Zero.”

Cats chief Brian Cook said the club had embraced Towards Zero with a safe-driving policy and continued education of staff and players.

“Road safety is something we feel very strongly about and this policy applies to everyone who drives a club vehicle,” Mr Cook said.

Forum hears:

‘Stress, illness’ hit our drivers

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG bus drivers are going on sick leave with stress from unrealistic new timetables, a public transport forum has heard.

Drivers told the forum that passenger complaints were increasing, said Liberal Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay.

“Drivers are saying that under the new timetables they’re now required to make specific times allocated per stop.

“They’re saying some of the times are unrealistic. For instance, allowing two minutes to reach a certain stop when it can take more depending on traffic conditions.

“They’re saying their local knowledge indicates that the times allocated do not allow for traffic congestion.

“A lot are getting quite stressed and are taking leave because they’re under such pressure to make timetables.

“Psychologically, some struggling to deal with the pressure to make stops and relationships with passengers have become less than pleasant when they are running late.”

The forum, at Manifold Heights on Tuesday night, followed a first Liberal-organised session on changes to Geelong’s public transport system at Grovedale Simon Ramsay last month. The changes have sparked complaints across the city, with passengers complaining of long walks to bus stops and extended travel times compared to the previous regime.

Mr Ramsay said the voices of the 200-plus people who attended both forums must be heard.

“The (state) government have got to get this right.

There are too many voices saying it’s not working for them to ignore it.”

Mr Ramsay said the regional rail link also needed attention.

A rail tunnel restricting the line between Geelong and South Geelong stations to single track was now a significant bottleneck, he said.

“It needs another line. There needs to be a feasibility study to see what solutions there are to putting in an extra track.

“If the government really wants people to move into regional communities as part of the decentralisation of Melbourne they need to look at situations like this. There needs to be a discussion between the federal and state governments about joint funding arrangements to do something about that tunnel.”

GEELONG has a role to play in welcoming refugees fleeing conflict in the Middle East, according to Corio MP Richard Marles.

The war in Syria was a tragedy on an extraordinary scale, said federal Labor’s immigration and border protection spokesperson.

“Over the last few days we’ve seen an outpouring of sentiment and offers of assistance from the community on a grand scale,” Mr Marles said.

“We need to act and Geelong absolutely has a role to play. Here in Geelong we have a proud history of embracing multi-culturalism, ethnic groups from across the globe make up our city and we are a welcoming community.”

“I’ll be working with state representatives and community leaders to harness the goodwill to take action to help the people affected by the Syrian crisis.”

Surf Coast Shire could also be an option to accommodate Syrian refugees as a self-declared ‘Refugee Welcome Zone’ since 2004.

FTA key to Avalon global push

By EMILY IANNELLO A FREE-TRADE agreement between Australia and China would help Avalon Aiport’s push for an international terminal, according to business leaders.

Influential produce entrepreneur Frank Costa and airport chief Justin Giddings said the proposed agreement would increase fresh food exports to China, enhancing Avalon’s case for an international terminal.

Mr Costa, who has long-called for food exports from Avalon to

China deal ‘could lead to exports of fresh food’ Asia, said the only problem was the agreement was “not happening quickly enough”.

“It would give us the opportunity to grow more produce and employ more people,” said the recently retired Mr Costa.

“The worst thing that can happen is when kids leave school and there are no jobs. The agreement would really open up enormous activity.”

Mr Costa said an international airport at Avalon would be “ideal“ for produce suppliers like Costa Group Trading.

“It’s so close to us - we’d be really happy about that ... it would be a very good thing for the horticulture industry.”

Mr Giddings said the airport would support “anything making it easier to export fresh produce out of Australia into China”.

“I’ve been over to China on recent occasions and have looked at their produce and a lot of it’s from New Zealand because they’ve had a FTA for some time.”

New Zealand’s exports to China have quadrupled since their 2008 agreement.

Mr Giddings said accessing Chinese markets would be “great for Australia and also provide more job opportunities for Avalon”.

Developing an international terminal would be “the easy bit”, he said.

“The hard part is getting the Chinese to buy our produce. If we can remove the barriers it makes it very easy for the airport to fund the infrastructure because the demand is so much stronger.”

Labor has opposed the Abbott Government’s proposed free-trade deal, which has yet to

pass through parliament, over concerns it could allow Chinese workers to take Australian jobs.

“What we need now is for the Government to stop playing politics and address the legitimate concerns being raised in the community around the labour marketmobility clause and what this means for Australian jobs,” said federal Member for Corio Richard Marles.

“Make no mistake though, Labor absolutely wants to see this agreement implemented.”

Sheets speak language of child safety for new communities ‘Roughies’

To cover the gap, Kidsafe Victoria has produced a series of multilingual child injury prevention fact sheets.

The fact sheets are available in 11 languages including English, Serbian, Arabic, Somali, Chinese, Turkish, Croatian, Vietnamese, Macedonian, Chin-haka and Karen.

Geelong Karenni leader Augustino Moedu and other members of his community attended a lunch of the new resources at Norlane Child and Family Centre.

“The fact sheets will help us learn to recognise and understand risks to our children in our homes,” Mr Moedu said.

“Having this information translated into Karen is so valuable for our families and makes us feel part of the community.”

The fact sheets will also become part of City of Greater

Geelong’s child injury prevention program.

Covering home safety tips, the fact sheets cover different ages and stages from birth to five years and cover preventable causes of injury in the home, at play and on the street.

Mayor Darryn Lyons said the initiative increased community accessibility to important safety information.

“It is shocking to me that five children die and another 1115 are injured every week in Australia due to unintentional injury,” Cr Lyons said.

“We must do everything we can to reduce these accidents.”

Kidsafe Victoria project manager Jason Chambers said the material provided neutral, evidence-based child information to prevent injuries in the home, where they most commonly occurred.

The ages and stages fact sheets are available for free download on the Geelong Australia website.

Cunningham Pier operator now unable to track down drivers

By PAUL MILLAR CHANGES to the law have made it more difficult for Geelong payand-display car park operators to issue “unenforceable payment notices dressed-up to look like fines”.

The changes have prompted a consumer action group to urge motorists to consider their options on $88 fines for running over time while parked on sites like Cunningham Pier.

The new legislation prevents

private car park operators from applying for disclosure orders to locate offenders through VicRoads’ data base.

Consumer Action Law Centre’s Jonathon Brown said the operators were now unable to issue demands for payment because they had lost their access to names and addresses.

Motorists should now “carefully consider“ their options if given a ticket in a private car park, he said

“It’s very easy to make changes to ensure that people pay. It’s a matter of changing the technology - people would be silly not to comply,” Ms Torrisi said.

Pay-and-display signs on Cunningham Pier say valid tickets must be displayed on dashboards and “failure to do so will result in issue of a payment notice for $88”.

Ms Torrisi said Care Park could not call the $88 a fine because the company was not a statutory authority.

The $88 was instead a payment for a breach of contract, she said.

Ms Torrisi advised any motor-

ists who disputed their tickets to contact Care Park in the first instance.

Recent legal decisions determined that some private car park fines were unenforceable because the damages did not reflect the operators’ actual losses.

VicRoads’ Glen Madeira said only enforcement agencies such as Victoria Police and councils could now access VicRoads data through an information-protection agreement.

Car park operators previously requested the details of more than 50,000 Victorians a year to send letters of demand for payments of $80 to $100 a ticket.

Consumer Affairs Minister Jane Garrett said some car park operators were issuing unenforceable payment notices dressed-up to look like fines.

“For too long people have been intimidated into paying fake fines. This legislation stops this practice in its tracks,” Ms Garrett said.

A new skate park in Austin Park, designed by local youngsters, was close to completion and would be a real attraction for a booming population of youthful residents, Cr Ansett said.

Coles opened a supermarket in the town last December, with Woolworths is increasing its size from 1400 to 3200 square meters to meet demand.

Methane leaks testing widens

By PAUL MILLAR INVESTIGATORS from City of Greater Geelong have extended testing for methane leaks from a former rubbish tip below a South Geelong industrial estate.

City services general manager William Tieppo said additional testing was under way at the scene of last week's leaks into buildings in Birkett Plc and Hede St, off Barwon Tce. Mr Tieppo said surrounding areas would also be tested to determine the extent of the outbreak.

Additional tests had so far found low methane levels but the City would carry out more testing in the coming weeks, he said.

Mr Tieppo said public safety was a priority.

The City was providing its test results to relevant government departments and agencies such as WorkSafe, the EPA and the CFA, he said.

Council officers and staff from the EPA had door-knocked businesses in the light industrial estate last Friday to provide information relating to the previous tests and to advise on future testing.

Council and the agencies would continue to inform tenants and landowners of the results, Mr Tieppo said.

Any steps to reduce landfill gas emissions would be investigated once authorities had a clearer understanding of the extent and nature of the South Geelong emissions, he said.

The City was also conducting tests for methane leaks at a recently closed Corio landfill.

A 2008 methane leak into a housing estate in Melbourne's southwestern suburbs forced the evacuation of homes and cost City of Casey millions of dollars.

The NTEU campaign follows similar union action in Corangamite against the Government’s proposed free trade agreement with China. The Liberals hold the seat with a margin of less than four per cent.

UNIONS have again targeted the marginal federal seat of Corangamite, this time with a national campaign against deregulation of university fees.

A billboard protesting the Abbott Government’s plan appeared on the Princes Hwy near Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus this week.

Improved leadership needed PIVOTAL to the city’s local governance management duopoly and growth regeneration will be the quality of City of Greater Geelong's next CEO. Conservatism, reticence, buck-passing and cameo roles won’t cut it if a spirit of cooperation and teamwork is to blend in with the state’s new Geelong authority.

Equally, while the mayoral role needs to be made more authoritative, the CEO should also be given a place at the authority’s table.

As a subset, it goes without saying that the city’s regrowth will be accelerated by the CEO, mayor and truncated councillors forming an attuned bipartisan alliance. A healthy council can do without those using their in time ratepayer-funded status to slingshot onto loftier political stages.

While Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins was right in legislating to crack down on council bullies and outlaw ward funding, where are the amendments to the Local Government Act to ramp up the transparency and accountability of council staff and management?

Why keep trotting out inquiries with optional testament? Why revert to reviews that might conclude with selectively published outcomes?

One hopes ratepayers are not footing the bill.

Hopefully an up-and-about new CEO, in tandem with an upgraded, committed-for-the-long-haul mayor and full-time councillor base, can come together because there's much that can be achieved.

Evidence of harm caused by fluoride is not hard to find, as distinct from the poorly researched claims of its promoters who rely largely on opinions.

Australia is one of only three countries that mandate compulsory fluoridation, which is medication without informed consent. Most countries prohibit it for health and ethical reasons.

What is truly evil is how authorities treat people who suffer from fluoridation. They are ignored by health departments, shunned by water suppliers and forced to fund their own rainwater tanks and specialised filters, knowing that a single unguarded sip could cause pain and suffering without legal redress.

Make no mistake, fluoride is a ticking timebomb; the asbestos, thalidomide, DDT of our age.

There may be worse things than fluoridation but those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

Finally, just consider the wasteful ineffectiveness of the delivery system and the fact that dental health in Australia is declining despite fluoridation.

Ms Bridson should look elsewhere for fluoride conspirators because we are not the people putting poison in the water.

A 2014 Harvard University study found that fluoride can lower children’s IQ by seven points, while numerous government reports have shown it can injure the brain and neurological system.

The Harvard study showed that fluoride is one of the chemicals that can increase autism and attention deficit disorder.

Fluoride is now linked, along with many other industrial chemicals, to neuro-developmental disabilities affecting millions of children worldwide.

The current understanding of fluoride is similar to that of lead in the 1970s.

If fluoridation is as good as its promoters claim then we would not have a dentist in practice.

I AGREE with Suzanne Bridson that claims of fluoridation causing autism might have no foundation but concerns about reduced IQ are being taken seriously. Researchers at Harvard School of Public Health found strong indications that fluoride might adversely affect cognitive development in children.

My experience as a health practitioner in Geelong suggests that claims of fluoridation being “safe” are not the case. Some patients have become extremely unwell from exposure to fluoride since Geelong's water was fluoridated in 2009.

It seems the number of people affected was too small for authorities to recognise the impact of fluoridation before it began.

For authorities to continue supporting fluoridation without widespread clinical checking of people with clinical symptoms is worrying.

Fortunately, Victorian health authorities have done some proper medical checking and have found that fluoridation can be associated with illness, so I follow their advice about keeping affected patients away from fluoridated water.

However, the advice has been challenging to follow. Some patients are not only forced to avoid fluoride coming though the kitchen tap but also to avoid the water they used to wash in.

The advice to avoid fluoridated water also includes all bread and biscuits and processed food made with Geelong tap water.

I couldn’t work out what the physical size of the country had got to do with the matter, particularly given that most of it is uninhabitable.

What she did not seem to understand is the cost to the country – taxpayer – of accommodating, feeding and providing a whole range of other services, viz medical and educational services, to such a vast amount of displaced people.

It would be financially crippling, as anecdotal evidence suggests, because many, if not most, would be dependent on social welfare payments long-term.

Then again she was probably unconcerned about the cost, being a long-term recipient of unemployment benefits herself.

The aptly named outfit resonates with the Queensland singer-songwriter to this day.

“I just need to travel,” Ray agreed.

“My folks travelled so much, they were always moving around. I always get itchy feet.

“One of my favourite times is really early in morning sitting at a roadhouse just watching the overnight trucks pulling in and out.

“I feel very much at home in that environment.”

Being constantly on the move does make for interesting relationships, Ray admitted.

“You can’t really hold a relationship when you’re on the road.”

With more than 70 gigs under his belt already this year, Ray has been touring nationally since January.

But the changes of scenery help fuel the storytelling songs he pens, part of the country influence of his parents.

It’s that down-to-earth quality that has seen Ray’s music sought-after in the unlikeliest of places, including Singapore and more recently Canada and the USA.

Ray went to Asia at the request of radio stations that had picked up and played his songs without any promo – an amazing achievement in this programmed day and age.

Ray heads off to Canada and the USA soon to perform his first shows, again at the request of radio stations after discovering his songs.

“I love performing on stage. I love being in front of people and experiencing the energy of the live performance,“ Ray said.

“There’s nothing like it and that’s what drives me.”

So much so that even when heading into the recording studio he would often gather an impromptu ‘audience’ to help create a “cool live vibe”.

“I try to do a lot of live stuff in the studio. I want some of my tracks to sound like I’m in my living room just playing along.”

Ray’s success this year – he has a number-five on the singles chart and a gold album – was boosted when he was runner-up on the sixth season of the X Factor.

But the alternative rock and blues artist has since proved he has some X factor of his own.

Ray plays Corio’s Gateway Hotel on 19 September. The Independent is giving away two double passes on its Facebook page.

Following over 4000 shows around the world with The Wizard of Oz Show, production company Youngstars2.com will present the shows to provide both holiday entertainment and donations to Royal Children’s Hospital Toy Appeal.

Geelong Peforming Arts Centre will host one performance, beginning with a special pre-show singalong of songs from popular Disney movie Frozen, such as For The First Time in Forever, Do You Want To Build a Snowman and Oscar-winning Let it Go. The show’s singing, dancing characters will encourage their

The write turn for legend Mal

By PAUL MILLAR MAL LEYLAND might have travelled all over the countryside but finding a publisher for his writing was a bigger challenge.

The Australian adventurer, who with late brother Mike took on mighty outback documentary challenges, will be a guest speaker at Geelong’s national Word for Word non-fiction festival this weekend.

“The only way you get published is to keep hammering on doors until they break open,’’ he told the Independent from his home in Queensland.

Leyland, who has produced 15 books, 10 with his brother, said he had always been keen to write.

“I want to make a career out of writing now but you need to be knocking on the right door at the right time.”

Leyland’s passion for words became evident at school where he was the only student with an interest in Shakespeare.

“I wasn’t all that good at school but I was good at literature and English. When they asked me why I liked Shakespeare I said it was because he could say so much with so little words.”

Leyland dabbled on the edge of being a full-time wordsmith, often writing articles for the Newcastle Sun while working as a cadet photographer.

“That got me really interested in writing.”

He became the scriptwriter for Ask the Leyland Brothers, which ran for 153 episodes between 1976 and 1980.

Leyland has also written children’s books, a crime whodunit and an autobiography, Still Travelling, his latest work, which he said was selling well.

The explorer, navigator, filmmaker, and author always came across as a battler in his documentaries. He has since revealed he had bowel cancer for

IT’S BETTER this way.

Missing the finals allows Geelong to focus on the future, get its list sorted and get an early start on the pre-season.

Had the Cats scraped into the finals it would have been fairly pointless exercise, with no real prospect of advancing to any meaningful stage.

While coach Chris Scott in his public pronouncements has always said his charges would try their best this season, match committee decisions have always tipped a broad wink to the future.

Geelong’s cautious approach to injuries, allowing players to take extra time to return to full fitness, was a clear indicator that 2015 success was not the ultimate objective.

The arrival of Mitch Clark and Rhys Stanley at the start of the season engendered hope for this year but early results demonstrated the gap between Geelong and the league leaders.

But the hopes for 2016 will be on a more solid basis given the improvement and health of Geelong’s list.

List management supremo Steven Wells is still in charge and guiding the crucial decisions over the off-season, a reason for positivity in itself.

Successful returns for Daniel Menzel, Nathan Vardy and Josh Cowan have boosted spirits and the re-signing of Steve Motlop demonstrates player confidence in the club’s direction.

Motlop faced a tough decision, with other clubs, notably Richmond, placing a great deal of temptation in his path.

Scott will hope Mitch Duncan remains injuryfree next season in order to fully flourish as an A-grade midfielder, along with the improved Josh Caddy.

But it’s the rookies that give even greater encouragement for a return to finals action next season.

The Cats have three nominees in this year’s rising star award, the most of any club: Cory Gregson, Jackson Thurlow and Darcy Lang.

The trio proved their nominations were no fluke by playing almost every game this season.

Add to that the excitement of a developing Nakia Cockatoo and Scott has reason to feel the youth policy will pay dividends.

Missing finals can be seen as a waste of a year.

Perhaps if the decisions to cut some veterans made last week had been done last season, some of the younger brigade would have benefited from further development.

But it’s a balancing act between blooding the new and respecting the old, and most fans would feel that balance was achieved.

Clearly however the remaining veterans will need to demonstrate they are not holding young players out of spots.

The trading period will be fascinating to watch to see how much of the Patrick Dangerfield, Lachie Henderson and Scott Selwood rumour mill has been based on reality.

ONE OF Australia’s greatest runs of big southern bluefin tuna continued on our doorstep over the past week, with fish to 155kg taken from Apollo Bay to Port Macdonald.

Apollo Bay produced the majority of ‘barrels’ tuna over 80kg - over the past couple of days. Water around Cape Otway was the most productive for anglers trolling Rapala Xrap 30s and large Tornado skirted lures.

Numerous multiple hook-ups were reported but boating more than one tuna at a time was rare due to the extended fights needed.

Kevin Mcloughin, Col Sheppard and Kaide Love set out from Apollo Bay before sunrise on Saturday to avoid the record launch time at the boat ramp.

One of their rods buckled over and screamed off line late in the afternoon, with the boys finally landing a 102kg fish in the dark four hours later.

Closer to home, Mark Sesar and Adrian Cole spent a few hours targeting salmon and mullet in the Barwon River estuary as bait for a trip to Portland.

Using chicken and prawns amid a strong berley trail, they caught both species but were surprised when a school of silver trevally to almost 1kg moved in for some specular fights on light gear.

Anglers spinning the beaches and rock platforms surrounding Lorne banked salmon to 2.5kg. The rocks were better for both numbers and size.

Snapper reports began trickling in from Corio Bay, with areas such as the quarries and spoil grounds producing the odd quality fish to 7 kg. Fishing into the night helped, along with fresh squid as bait.

On the freshwater front, many anglers made their annual pilgrimage for trout opening. Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lught tried Gippsland where he banked brown trout to 500g while walking small streams with hard-body lures.

Lake Bullen Merri produced rainbow trout and Chinook salmon to 1.5kg on Powerbait fished from the edges. Anglers who fished into the night caught the larger fish.

Redfin to 900g continued biting in the Barwon River above Queen’s Park. Lures such as Atomic Shads in the 017 colour and cast hard among the snags worked a treat, with the afternoon bite best.

The odd carp was also taken in the Barwon on super-sweet corn cornels and bread baits.

The carp were spread throughout the whole freshwater section, so plenty of access was available.

For fishing options over the next week, the world-class southern bluefin fishery on our doorstep should continue to be worth fishing.

Snapper could be another saltwater option, with anglers advised to spend a few evening hours at the Point Richards channel.

Freshwater enthusiasts should try Wurdee Boluc Reservoir for large brown trout on scrub worms or mudeyes suspended under floats.
