Pennisi stands down Casey’s tips

By DANE LILLINGSTONE SOUTHERN Downs councillor Vic Pennisi has stood down from his role with the Stanthorpe Community Reference Panel (SCRP).

In a statement presented at the council meeting Cr Pennisi said that due to his roles as chairman of the reference panel and Regional Development Australia Darling Downs and Southwest, it has been suggested that there was a conflict of interest between his role as councillor and his involvement with Emu Swamp Dam. “At this stage I do not reasonably believe that there is any conflict of interest and until such time as I have had clarification and advice from independent legal coun-

sel on this matter I will declare a perceived conflict of interest,” he said.

“I have resigned my position as chairman of the SCRP until such time as I receive further clarification.”

However Cr Pennisi is adamant there is no conflict of interest and that his personal interest would not sway him to make a decision that was not in the best interest for the public. The extra positions he has are reportedly not paid.

Cr Pennisi has been a longstanding and vocal supporter of the Emu Swamp Dam through the reference panel, and as part of the group they had recently announced the funding of the dam's business plan in association with the Emu

Swamp Irrigators subcommittee, through the employment of engineering firm Jacobs.

In a special council meeting held on 10 August, Cr Pennisi put forward and council resolved to submit an application to the Community Resilience Fund 2015/16 for Flood Mitigation Gauges for various locations. They also agreed that Cr Pennisi would facilitate a meeting between Stanthorpe Combined Rural Fire Group, the engineering services director and disaster management co-ordinator to develop a project to put forward for the next round of funding.

The next step in the development of dam will be a meeting with Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce on 7 October.

Cr Pennisi will not be involved with the Stanthorpe Community Reference Panel for the foreseeable future.

Inquest concludes

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE inquest into the death of Jasmyn Carter-Maher has concluded with suggestions she may still be alive if it weren’t for complacent medical staff.

Queensland Coroner John Lock presented his findings to the inquest, citing system and staffing issues as contributing to her death.

Lock said that if the adult deterioration detection system had been efficiently applied, the 17-year-old would have received treatment sooner.

Tragically, her mother was not even by her side as the severity of her condition was not apparent to staff at the time and she was not notified until after her death.

His recommendations included that medical staff should receive better training of alert systems. He believed there was a culture of complacency surrounding the systems and suggested further academic research needed to be undertaken.

Mr Johnson’s response said, “I wish to highlight the fact that the department does not provide legal advice to councils or councillors. Instead, any advice provided by the department is general in nature only and where legal advice is required on a particular matter, council should seek that advice through its own legal provider.”

“Accordingly, in this instance, any request for legal advice should have been directed to council’s legal representative if there was doubt about the processes leading up to the adoption of the 2015/2016 budget complied with the legislative requirements.

SDRC addressed the claims of misconduct and said “SDRC wishes to state clearly that there have been no acts of misconduct undertaken in the development of the 2015-'16 Budget. Council also wishes to indicate that it will continue to seek advice of a general nature from staff at the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning.”

DisABILITY Action Week aims to empower people with a disability, raise awareness of disability issues, and improve access and inclusion of people with a disability throughout the wider community.

Communities across the Southern Downs region will beneit from access to graiti removal kits being made available by Council. Council obtained funding from the Queensland Government for a ‘Graiti Stop’ project to purchase a number of graiti removal kits, which will be ofered under a partnership approach. Council is keen to partner with the region’s schools, businesses and community groups to raise awareness about graiti and its potential impacts on urban and regional areas.

With a focus on “ability not disability”, DisABILITY Action Week will be celebrated across the Southern Downs. A signature event this year is the addition of ilm making workshops in both Stanthorpe and Warwick. People of all ages and abilities can learn how to shoot, edit and produce a short ilm which will focus on local individuals or groups who demonstrate strengths in community access and inclusion.

People of all age ranges and abilities are welcome. Each workshop will have a public screening that all are welcome to attend.

REGIONAL ARTS DEVELOPMENT FUND (RADF) Round 1 Now Open and Nominations invited for Reference Group RADF is a partnership between state and local governments which invests in quality arts and cultural experiences across Queensland.

The 2015/16 inancial year brings a new RADF program to allow councils to deliver on locally identiied priorities, opportunities and to build capacity of the communities within their region. SDRC’s new RADF Guidelines and Application Form are available on Council’s website.

RADF Round 1 is now open with applications to be lodged by 5pm, 28 September 2015. Projects must not start before 30 November 2015.

SDRC’s RADF program also seeks to appoint a diverse number of community representatives to form a RADF Reference Group. Completed nominations for the Group should be returned by 5pm, Friday 11 September 2015.

A HEATED council meeting has revealed the Southern Downs will be given an election shake-up next year along with more funding cuts and a further display of frustration at fees and rate rises.

The council meeting heard that elections are getting closer, funding cuts will never cease and council fees will always rise.

Mayor Peter Blundell was called upon more than once in the meeting in front of a packed public gallery to keep things from getting unhinged between councillors but progress was made.

The meeting was told that the 2016 Southern Downs Regional Council will be a full postal ballot after an application from Mayor Pe-

ter Blundell was accepted by Deputy Premier Jackie Trad.

The Southern Downs will also see the introduction of preferential voting for mayoral candidates.

The decision raises the possibility of candidates winning without a majority vote.

Councillors did not agree with preferential voting with a few councillors raising concerns about how the decision could affect voting.

Cr Vic Pennisi said: “I don’t believe preferential voting is the way to go here.” Arts funding has been cut by more than $10,000.

Arts Queensland announced in July this year that it would be cutting the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) by $5833 and the council decided to also reduce its

contribution by the same amount.

Director of Business and Community Services David Tuxford said that Arts Queensland was still “paying us more than $12,000 above what they need to pay us.”

The finance report for the first month under the 2015-16 SDRC budget has seen a $46.9 million operating surplus which is 11.5 per cent below the estimated position for the financial year to date.

It was also revealed that 34.4 per cent of total rates have been collected at this stage.

A new motel development adjoining the Palace Hotel was rejected for further consultation after concerns were raised about its design fitting in with current architecture and it relying on the use of a driveway through council property.

Seniors made up a large portion of the public gallery and were pleased to hear that the council’s lease policy will be reviewed at the September meeting after reports of some lease fees jumping from $200 to $700.

A report will be presented at the next council meeting on the process of the creation of reserves.

There was also further discussion of a possible investigation into the after effects of amalgamation.

Rural property owners got a win with properties in small towns currently zoned rural now exempt from Vacant Water Access Charges backdated from 1 July 2015.

The next General Council Meeting will be held in Stanthorpe on 23 September.

DSD welcomes new marketing boss

By DANE LILLINGSTONE DESTINATION Southern Downs has continued on with life after Tracy Vellacott with the announcement of a new marketing manager.

Destination Southern Downs chair Corinne Butler announced the appointment of Anissa Williams as the organisation’s new marketing manager.

Anissa was previously Director of Marketing for Granite Belt Wine and Tourism and has international experience in tourism, events and the wine industry.

She has been contracted for two days a week until 30 June 2016 and will be splitting her time between Warwick and Stanthorpe.

“My challenge and immediate priority, with the DSD marketing team and members, is to develop a clear strategy marketing and brand strategy which gives the region the opportunity to engage with customers and

the tourism industry in a meaningful way that drives visitation to the region,” she said.

“That, after all, is the bottom line - attracting more visitors by motivating consumers to visit the Southern Downs and Granite Belt and providing a seamless transition from booking to experiencing our fabulous product.”

Anissa said DSD had big goals and was ready to push the region’s tourism industry.

“We want to be one of the leaders in Queensland and, hopefully, there nationally in terms of local tourism associations,” she said.

“We’re looking at a new website. Just looking at how we can bring the region together.”

“Social media is a prime tool because, though we will have advertising dollars, we’re never going to have the millions of dollars of somewhere like the Gold Coast.”

any issues regarding neglecting the Granite Belt tourism but instead said she wanted to look to the future.

“For us it’s about moving forward. We do want to bring these two regions together into one region. There’s definitely synergy,” she said.

“There’s going to be a benefit from resource allocations by bringing them together. All I can say is its early days.”

The DSD is also about to launch its inaugural membership prospectus with meetings aimed at providing information on the foundation progress of DSD and its plans.

COUNCIL officers have announced they are to target people who illegally dump rubbish at unsupervised waste transfer stations.

The move comes as residents complain that no one is being held accountable for the unruly state of the region’s rural dumps.

Dalveen resident Greg Sweeney said his local dump was closed earlier this year and, like others, the council gave him keys to the transfer station at Thulimbah.

Under the council’s new arrangements, residents are allowed to dump items at Thulimbah on the understanding that they would only dispose of allowed items and that they would lock up after themselves.

However Mr Sweeney said that other users are not following the rules of what is allowed to be dumped and they are not closing the gates. “I’ve seen engine parts, chassis parts, timber and literally the kitchen sink in these skip bins,� he said. “I was talking to one of the other colleagues and JJ Richards turned up and dumped the bin in the back of his truck.

When I came back 20 minutes later, the bins were empty but JJ Richards left the gate wide open.

Illegally dumped waste at a SDRC waste station. “We’ve got a key. Nine times out of 10 you can drive past it and one or two gates are wide open. “People are using their facilities with the keys and are too lazy to close the gate. “The council said to me they put surveillance cameras out there but they got stolen. I find that a bit hard to believe.�

Southern Downs Regional Council’s Acting Director Planning and Environment Tim O’Brien said it was up to users to respect the facility. “It is the responsibility of residents who use the Thulimbah Waste Transfer Station to close and lock the gate of the facility when they leave,� he said. “In addition, the facilities

are made available for domestic waste that fits within the bins only and not for larger household items or commercial, industrial or farming waste. “The on-the-spot fines for an individual for illegal dumping are $1884 (less than 2500L of waste) or $2356 (more than 2500L of waste). “The on-the-spot fine for littering is $235 for an individual. “It is important to note the placement of waste on the ground at the facilities, and not in the bin, is considered illegal dumping, and a fine may be issued for this. “Council has cameras available for use for monitoring illegal dumping, and are about to commence a program targeting the unsupervised waste transfer stations across the region.�

In brief Three times the limit A 27-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with high-range drink driving after allegedly blowing more than three times the legal limit in Warwick on Saturday night.

The driver was then breathalysed, where he allegedly blew .166 and was arrested.

A later body search revealed he was also allegedly carrying drugs and he was charged with possession.

Motorbike crash ON FRIDAY night a 48-year-old man riding a motorbike is believed to have collided with a kangaroo, resulting in substantial leg injuries.

The incident occurred on Mount Tully Road, Mount Tully, with the man suspected to be under the influence of drugs.

An associate of the man is also alleged to have ridden the motorbike home after the incident, without a licence.

Police later located the man, where he was alleged to be found in possession of cannabis and a smoking utensil.

The man was charged with drug offences and is expected to also be charged with disqualified driving.

FoodAssist provides a budget food service for people with hampers available consisting of things like pasta, vegetables, tea, biscuits and a various assortment of other food products.

From humble beginnings as a fortnightly van, they are now open Monday-Friday from 9am to 3pm.

wick, Esther Spicer, has been part of the program in Warwick since its inception.

“We’re getting at least 10 people a day coming through now and that’s wonderful but we need the awareness out there. I think there are still a few people who are a bit concerned about coming, that people might know they’re on food assist.

There’s that mentality,” she said.

“Most people don’t know about it and when they find out they’re absolutely rapt.

“We do $15 hampers, we do $30 super hampers and at the moment

we have $10 school boxes for sale then we’ve got toddler formula for free and baby bottles at $2 each.

“We always have three bags of pasta in a box, everything else changes.”

She said they were more than happy to mix hampers around to suit dietary requirements.

FoodAssist has been helping distribute food in the Darling Downs since 1996 and has been operating in Warwick since October.

Drivers refuse drug tests TWO drivers in Stanthorpe have allegedly refused to provide samples for drug testing, resulting in charges.

On Saturday night an 18-year-old Wynnum man was stopped on High Street and refused to supply a specimen for a drug test. After being taken back to Stanthorpe Police Station the man again refused, resulting in him being charged with failing to provide the relevant specimen and he had his driver’s licence immediately suspended.

A 30-year-old woman was changed with the same offence on Sunday afternoon, after being stopped at Wallangarra Road and refusing to be drug tested.

The Woodenbong Central School Year 10 is set to represent Australian as ‘Indoor Team Shooter’ for the 2016 World Archery Championships to be held in Turkey in March next year.

“I aspire to be a world-class archer, therefore this is my major stepping stone for me and I am very excited about this opportunity,” he said.

The talented 15 year old belongs to the Lismore Great Eastland Archers and Northern Rivers Field Archers.

He received a bow for Christmas two years ago and hasn’t looked back, winning numerous state and national titles over the past two years.

His most recent win came at the two-day event at Yatala 3D Shoot - where he took the Queensland State Title in his division.

Remy is now busy fund-raising for the trip to Turkey and is looking for sponsorship to help him realise his dream.

A 21-YEAR-OLD German backpacker has been sentenced to four months in prison for a car crash that killed a Wallangarra mother.

Alex Hagen Florschutz was driving on the wrong side of the road when he collided head on with 44-year-old Maria Wyeth.

He was driving north on the New England Highway in an overtake lane on the wrong side of the road and did not realise his mistake until it was too late. As they were coming from a bend in the road both cars collided head-on. The woman died on impact. Mr Florschutz was not said to have been speeding and returned a zero blood alcohol test. He will serve four months in prison before having his sentence suspended for two years.

THE Southern Downs Local Government Area will soon have nine councillors’ positions vacant.

Written job applications should identify each candidate's past successful management of a $60$80 million budget for the daily operation of an area of 7120 square kilometres serving a population of about 36,000 Australians.

Successful candidates must have, or the intellectual capacity to quickly acquire, the ability to analyse complex documents, identifying all false justifications and all proposals that will negatively affect local residents. Evidence should be presented of past activities or employment which substantiates this ability.

Candidates must commit to the immediate: a. Return of councillor’s own personal divisional responsibility for all local government matters; b. Re-writing of councillor’s responsibilities to precisely identify their legal accountability; c. Cessation of the private use of council vehicles and property; d. Assessing and planning, in an open and transparent manner, the future safe, timely and effective development of our area; e. Listing all current and future adverse impacts of Agenda 21 upon property owners and farmers; f. Elimination of bureaucratic restrictions upon residents, small business and primary producers, and; g. Declaration of any conflict of political, social or pecuniary interest in any council deliberations.

Candidates must sign a declaration to resign if any deficiency of theirs in the above is identified and proven - e.g., private use of council items or failure to represent the community.

Successful candidates must have, or the intellectual capacity to quickly acquire, the ability to quickly assess and make timely decisions upon matters including: a. Reduction of council debt and property owners rates; b. Prioritisation of new works construction and equipment acquisitions, and; c. Timings for maintenance of 3071 kilometres of sealed gravel and dirt roads including maintenance of 52 bridges and many major culverts.

Candidates must have proven motivation and ability to make community-based decisions on the safe, effective operation of public libraries, parks, swimming pools, aerodromes, cemeteries, saleyards, feral pest management, healthy water supply, sewage and both domestic and industrial waste disposal.

The identification and prompt correction of any waste and unethical activity is also required, including funding elitist groups of very dubious intellectual, aesthetic or spiritual benefit to most ratepayers.

Until elections, we should pray for wisdom for all voters and for those in authority, so that we may lead quiet and peaceful lives.

ALLORA is a really decent little town with congenial chatty people; take a walk through town to see it. But after sitting through council meetings re GrainX I feel we are being asked to lock ourselves indoors getting big chips on our shoulders as GrainX owns the polluted air, dust and noise, during their work hours. When these people close down for the weekend (sometimes) it becomes a treat to walk outside again.

I ask ... who is doing the complying? When they, GrainX are operating I feel completely victimised. I was shown an old picture of the area in question; the site was cultivated land for crops, with the dairy in the background, houses surrounding. Whoever let such a suitable arrangement, be allowed to become this current industrial mess, assaulting the lives of residents who will become prisoners in their own homes, whose health will be seriously at risk, slowly end up in Boot Hill.

Emu Swamp Dam VIC Pennisi said (Free Times, 20 August), Emu Swamp Dam has been identified to deliver the best outcome for the Granite Belt. How can it be the best when you have to pump water uphill back to Stanthorpe? I would like to ask Vic how much the pumping will cost? You should know if you want the dam to go ahead! It’s like when I restore a tractor, I work out the cost before I go ahead, then I will know how much it will cost, so you should know how much it will cost to pump the water uphill.

I have been talking to an engineer and he told me that if Emu Swamp Dam ever got built it would not stack up with the figures, it would be too shallow and too costly to pump water uphill and the water would be polluted.

He also said there were a few clowns that want the water - these clowns want to sit down and work out the cost, then they will realise they cannot afford it.

Vic, I have been farming since I was 15 years of age and also ran a business and I never went broke. Why, because I knew how to spend money wisely and save money.

If the council thinks money spent on Emu Swamp Dam will be well spent, how come the council is $36 million in the red? That is why the council will be voted out next year.

Warwick police hit at rumours

By DANE LILLINGSTONE REPORTS have surfaced over the weekend in The Sunday Mail of disharmony at the Warwick Police Station.

The claim centres on a couple of incidents including an alleged assault and a drink driving charge.

Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Jamie Deacon said he had seen nothing but professionalism since his tenure began.

“I’ve been here as the OC for three weeks and I’ve seen nothing but professional behaviour from the police that are here now in that three weeks,” he said.

“Prior to my arrival there were some issues with previous police and there has been some action taken by ethical standards command against some of those police.

“In the three weeks I’ve seen, I’ve seen nothing but professional behaviour and good work from the officers that remain here at Warwick station.

“What’s reported by some reporters is an interpretation and it may not be based on any fact.

“They’ve written an article on the basis of Warwick police station, yet I’m the officer in charge of the Warwick police station and not once did that person even contact me and try to get my version of events, nor the inspector of the Warwick patrol group or the district office.”

Child abuser guilty A 59-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced to 15 months in jail at Warwick District Court last week when a jury found him guilty of sexual abuse.

The man was said to have sexually abused his ex-girlfriend’s son 20 years ago with the incidents occurring between April 1993 and December 1994. On at least one occasion the man was said to have entered the boy’s room while he slept and indecently assaulted him.

He was found guilty and charged with one count of indecently dealing with a child under the age of 16. His sentence was suspended for two and a half years after four months in custody with the judge taking the man’s medical condition into consideration.

Time to listen ISN'T it time the SDRC listened to their people about these excessive rates and especially here in Killarney with the CED water issue being paid off, and it seems it is high time, as promises have been broken yet again.

I’ve had many calls from distraught people looking for a way out of here and who came here to make ends meet.

There is not much here for anyone starting a business, nor can a business owner have a job, for many, they are mostly struggling themselves.

Example: I’m a children’s entertainer, Rose City hires from Brisbane? This council will start to see many leaving this place e.g. Warwick, Killarney, Allora etc as rates here are the highest in the land.

It is no longer viable, nor logical to live here with so many subservient people. It’s boring except for two times a year. Wow! Good luck, you will need it in Warwick and its council.

School expo hits the town

By DANE LILLINGSTONE AN Education Expo was held on Saturday at Rose City in Warwick and hosted by the Wheatvale State School.

The expo was an opportunity for prospective students and parents to look at what the various town, country, public, private and independent schools across the Southern Downs have to offer.

Wheatvale State School initiated the expo last year and member of Wheatvale P&C Helen Lewis said they were happy for

the event to grow together with all the schools.

“The schools were happy to be there. Overall it was a good opportunity for people to come and have a conversation with schools.

We’ll be doing it again next year and we’ll try and get a more open space,” she said.

“There are enormous opportunities with so many schools in the area. The expo gives people a chance to go and see what schools can offer their child. As a community it offers choice, we don’t have a catchment area.

“Parents might think maybe one school doesn’t fit my child.

Let’s look at what all the schools have to offer. What does my child need to maximise my child’s learning capacity?”

Ms Lewis said a school like Wheatvale often went unnoticed but that they had fantastic resources.

“Wheatvale is a classic country school. We have a ratio of one teacher to every eight children.

The learning outcome is exceptional. They are getting very personalised education,” she said.

ON Sunday the Passchendaele Forest played host to an orienteering event by the Bullecourt Boulder Bounders Club.

There were seven courses at the event with local members and competitors from around Toowoomba and Brisbane.

Club Publicity Officer Liz Bourne said the plantation forest was a good location for people of all levels of experience.

“It contains a good track network as well as areas of detailed granite rocks which require careful navigation so it suits all levels of ability,“ she said.

For serious orienteers the event was seen as preparation for Kingaroy on granite terrain at the Queensland Orienteering Championships being held on September 12 and 13.

There were also local Darling Downs students in the Queensland Schools team at the event. They will be heading south to Victoria next month for the Australian Schools Championships being held just outside Ballarat.

Ms Bourne said that people of all ages and experience levels are welcome at their orienteering events with courses for beginners and instruction available on basic map reading and navigation skills.

“People of all ages and levels of fitness can take up orienteering as we have competitors from 8 to 80 years regularly taking part,” she said.

Paddle or a saddle Casey’s tips

KILLARNEY held its annual Waddle and Saddle event through the Cambanoora Gorge on Sunday.

The mixed ride event allowed participants to horse ride, cycle or walk along the historic Condamine River Road part of the Bicentennial National Trail.

It is the only time of the year that the road is specially closed to vehicles.

The incredibly scenic trip is run by the Killarney Show and Rodeo Society.

The trip is 22 kilometres long and featuring the 14 river crossings of the gorge.

Billy tea and damper were on offer as well as a barbecue lunch at the conclusion of the trip.

Unfortunately Killarney Show and Rodeo organisers have had to cancel their 6 September events and barrels show but they hope to reschedule for later in the year.

Walk to help find missing boy ON Saturday 12 September Stanthorpe will host a Walk 4 William event that will mark the one year anniversary of three-year-old William Tyrells disappearance.

William disappeared from his Nana’s home on the New South Wales mid-north coast.

At the time he was three years old and wearing a Spiderman costume.

The national event Walk 4 William will see Stanthorpe par-

ticipate in an effort to raise funds and continue the investigation into William’s whereabouts.

The Where’s William? campaign is an initiative of the Williams family who are working with the help of Bravehearts in raising awareness of William’s disappearance.

The event will be registered and fully endorsed by the Where’s William? campaign and Bravehearts.

Their ability is to take action

The event will be held at Rotary Park, Leslie Parade from 10am to noon with the walk commencing at 10.30am on the day.

Those who wish to show their support are asked to wear a red and blue or a Spiderman costume and give a gold coin donation for the walk.

NEXT week from 8 to 18 September the Southern Downs will celebrate DisABILITY Week with the message ‘ability not disability’.

Mayor Peter Blundell said the DisABILITY Action Week committee began organising the 10 days of activities across the region in March.

“The committee has broad community representation across Southern Downs’ services in Stanthorpe and Warwick, led

by Southern Downs Regional Council,” he said.

“Everyone involved has contributed great ideas and the result is yet another fabulous program of events and activities which will kickoff on 8 September with the Buddy Up Golf Day at Warwick Golf Club to launch this year’s calendar of events.”

Film making workshops will be introduced this year in Warwick and Stanthorpe.

The workshops will teach how to shoot, edit and produce a short film.

The films will focus on local individuals and groups and show community access and inclusion. Registrations are encouraged for all ages

and abilities.

Councillor Blundell said one in five Queenslanders has a disability of some kind.

“DisABILITY Action Week is aimed at empowering people with a disability, so it’s an important celebration,” he said.

“It’s also about raising awareness of disability issues, encouraging positive attitudes towards people with a disability and improving access and inclusion of people with a disability throughout the wider community.

“We all have a role in creating a truly welcoming and inclusive community from businesses and government to community organisations and individuals.

“We ask everyone to take part in DisABILITY Action Week and show their support.

“This is a time for all residents to come together as a community to recognise everyone’s abilities.”

ONE of Tenterfield’s favourite sons is the subject of a twopart mini-series to launch on Prime7 on 13 September.

Not The Boy Next Door tells the roller coaster story of Australian entertainer, Peter Allen, who went from being a childhood performer in country NSW to a Grammy and Academy Award-winning songwriter and the toast of Broadway, marrying into Hollywood royalty along the way.

Peter of course is best known for his signature song ‘I Go To Rio’, the unofficial Aussie anthem ‘I Still Call Australia Home’ and ‘Tenter-

field Saddler’, a moving tribute to his grandfather George Woolnough.

THE Saxy Lady is set to return to Allora on 25 September following a successful concert last week.

The variety concerts, hosted by the Saxy Lady herself Lynette Gordon have been proving popular with Lynette expecting another big event this month.

“The next concert is on 25 September, with a line up of talented musicians,” she said.

“Come along and join us for morning tea at 10.30am with the concert commencing at 11am.

“The Queen Bee of the Allora Red Hatters will speak about the history of their group and their involvement in the community ...their story is quite fascinating.”

Lynette said Friday’s event was a lot of fun.

“Last Friday saw the music of Mike Woollett enjoyed by an audience of eager music lovers,” she said.

“The medleys provided sing-a-longs of wellknown and familiar tunes. There was a lot of joy and laughter and Mike took us on a trip down memory lane.”

Dos and don’ts before building BUILDING or renovating a home can be stressful and so it makes sense to research and understand the process before beginning.

To help the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) has created a quick checklist and put together handy tips to get you started.

The checklist includes: Using a QBCC-licensed contractors; ask to see their licence card, and check the details with QBCC; get three written quotes; ask about your contractor’s previous work and get the details of their past clients so you can call them to find out more; record all details of your agreement in writing and keep a copy; don’t pay too much up front, and never pay for uncompleted work and check the work fully before making final payment.

The commission advises homeowners not to rush into a decision - to take time and seek legal and building advice where necessary.

According to the group, there are six steps to get started when building a new house, renovating, or undertaking repairs or maintenance work.

They recommend that homeowners take the following steps: 1. Make a list of local contractors willing and able to do the job. Refer to local papers, Yellow Pages, trade directories, industry associations (like the Housing Industry Association or Master Builders Association), friends who have built or renovated recently, hardware stores, the internet etc.

2. Ask to see their licence card A QBCC licence card indicates that a contractor has met certain minimum requirements. For most domestic building work, where a QBCC-licensed contractor is used, QBCC’s Statutory Insurance Scheme

provides protection against non-completion, defective work and subsidence. Some work may not require a QBCC licence. Check with QBCC. Electricians, for example, have their own licensing system.

3. Check the contractor’s licence details with QBCC. Write down the name and number from the contractor’s licence card, then contact QBCC to perform a licence search and confirm that the contractor has a current licence suitable for the job. This free licence search is available on the QBCC website, calling us on 139 333, or dropping into your local QBCC officehttp://www. qbcc.qld.gov.au/. In addition to licensing information, this search will also give the owner the details about the contractor’s past performance, including the value of domestic work performed and any directions (orders) QBCC has issued against the contractor to rectify defects in past work.

4. Get at least three quotes. Ask for quotes in writing, so they can be referred to later. Remember that the cheapest may not always be the best.

Pay attention to the materials specified and any exclusions.

5. Ask the contractor for details of past work and clients. Before making a final decision or pay any money, the commission suggest asking the preferred contractor for details of past work and previous clients. They suggest that prospective employer contact two or three of their previous clients and ask them about the customer service, documentation, workmanship and value for money that the contractor provided.

6. Once a contractor is selected, ensure all details of the agreement are written down in a contract (or, if the contract price is less than $3300, in a detailed written quote).

Grace extends a healing hand FORMER student of The School of Total Education, Grace Dugan (1985 - 1999), recently returned to the school for a visit, before taking on the challenging role of doctor at a hospital in Papua New Guinea.

Grace’s main focus will be on tuberculosis, a major disease at the hospital on Daru Island where she will be working.

Grace spent time with each of the Year 6, 7 and 11 classes telling the students about her life at school and after, and answering their many questions.

The students were surprised to learn that when at school, Grace was a keen writer who went on to have her first novel, “The Silver Road” published while she was studying for her arts degree at the University of Queensland.

After completing her arts degree and honours year, Grace then had a change of career and began her medical studies, and

The children loved meeting Grace and found her very inspiring.

While the top eight shuffle will be carefully watched there are three teams Newcastle, Tigers and Panthers at the opposite end of the ladder fighting to keep the wooden spoon at bay.

The action kicks off on Thursday night with a big game for the Broncos and Storm. Brisbane’s focus is not on the Minor Premiership Shield and it would be no surprise to see some Broncos players rested. Melbourne will have all hands on deck as they scramble to regain their place in the top four. On the back of an impressive performance last round I think Brisbane will win but you can never discount Melbourne who have a good record against the Broncos.

Friday night the Roosters will be looking to claim Minor Premiership honours again when they face the Bunnies. A 35-point loss against Brisbane last week has not given tipsters confidence South Sydney can win here. They look set to be without Isaac Luke and there has been no news to date on the return of Greg Inglis. On recent form, the Roosters should win here. If there is to be a major upset in Round 26 look for the Bunnies to spring a trap on the Roosters.

On Saturday Penrith host the Knights in one of the battles that will decide the fate of the 2015 wooden spoon. Most pundits had the Panthers figuring in their top eight at the start of the season, however injuries decimated their chances.

The Knights have saved some of their best performances for last. Although beaten last weekend by the Bulldogs, they showed plenty of courage and should end their season with a win.

The Tigers and Dragons go head to head at ANZ on Saturday. If the Tigers bring the form and attitude showed in Round 25 they will give the Dragons a solid hit-up before the finals. St George have a huge differential advantage over Manly so even if the Tigers were to get up here, and stranger things have happened, Dragons fans should still see their team in the finals. I expect the Dragons will get the job done here.

Coming off some disappointing results the Cowboys will be looking to put the Titans away in Saturday night’s game at 1300 Smiles. Injuries at this late stage have upset the Cowboys’ momentum, however they will finish the season in

Whatever finals scenario unfolds for the Cowboys, they need either Michael Morgan to return ahead of schedule or Ray Thompson and Johnathan Thurston to find a combination quickly. A Cowboys’ win will wrap up a good season for the NQlanders.

As the Eels and Raiders go head to head at Pirtek fans from both sides will be left to ponder what might have been. Canberra show promise of something special while the Eels have avoided another wooden spoon.

The Raiders were entertaining on Monday night but the loss of Blake Austen will impact this game. The outcome here is a toss of the coin.

Both sides have played 15 games and won six.

Leaning slightly towards the Raiders despite the loss of Austen.

One of the feature games of the round will be the clash of the Sharks and Sea Eagles at Remondis. A Sharks win should seal their top four finish. Unfortunately I can’t see it being a winning farewell for Geoff Toovey in what will be an intriguing game.

The Dogs and Warriors will officially wrap up the 2015 fixtures at ANZ on Sunday night. On paper this might not be the most exciting game of the round however the result could have a big impact on the finals.

On current form it is hard to see Hasler’s Doggies getting beaten here. A Bulldogs win could set the cat among the pigeons depending on the results of other games. What effect a win will have gets all too mathematical and hypothetical to even contemplate. It remains a remote possibility if the stars align that the Dogs could finish as high as fourth. A more likely scenario - they will win here and finish sixth or seventh.

Whichever way the cards fall this week it has been a remarkable season and we are set for some sensational rugby league as the finals unfold.

BART - We will not see his like again. The death of Cups King Bart Cummings marks the end of an era in Australian racing. While the sport of kings is littered with famous names, there is probably not another who has had a more profound effect on racing, the Australian public and of course the race that stops a nation, the Melbourne Cup. He is as synonymous with the Cup as the Roses and Flemington itself.

Tributes for the man that has helped shaped the legend that surrounds the Melbourne Cup continue to flow and rightly so.

I am sure all Australians whether once-ayear punters, serious punters or somewhere in between have their own memory of a Bart Cummings moment. Among others, one that will stay with me was the win of So You Think in the Cox Plate. Such a magnificent horse so magnificently presented and to watch the Cummins team go about their business as the media and public caravan carried on around them was a scene to behold. I guess also the news that the same thoroughbred had been sold to overseas connections on the eve of the Melbourne Cup just weeks later was to me a blow the great man did not deserve. But that is business and racing is after all a business.

What we have lost with the death of Cummings is the demise of another of the real characters of racing. People who had done it really tough (remarkably Cummings took two years to train his first winner). There was a measure of scaly and cunning wisdom in them- there had to be for them to survive and thrive early in their careers when racing was an industry not for the faint hearted. The characters whose essence was shaped by racing or racing shaped by their essence. Those people who could instinctively tell a good horse by merely looking at it and watching it walk. Who could say more in one line that most of us in a conversation.

Cummings was the master of the one-line quip, able to shoot down a stupid question with merely a glance from under those famous eyebrows. He has left the Australian racing industry and Australian public an immeasurable legacy.

And, of course, for the mug punters among us, we will not just be able to throw Bart’s horse into our multis just because.

If there is a great racecourse in the sky, there will be some tales told when the likes of Bart, T.J. Smith, George Hanlon and Colin Hayes sit down to chew the fat.

Thanks for the memories Bart. The first Tuesday in November will never be the same.

TRAGEDY FOR FORMER STANTHORPE CRICKETER MANY in Warwick and Stanthorpe will remember Howard Manning as an extremely talented cricketer and a great bloke. I received the tragic news recently that Mathew Manning son of Howard and wife Judy had been drowned in a tragic accident in Darwin. The 33-year-old career soldier is believed to have slipped from a balcony into a swimming pool at his home in Darwin last week. We join Howard’s many former Stanthorpe

CATCHING - BILLY-CART FEVER HAVE you caught it yet - the latest epidemic to hit the Granite Belt - Billy cart fever? It will be a case of back to the future in coming weeks as fathers and some mothers even some grandparents reconnect with their childhood and introduce their sons and daughters to that wonderful tradition of Billy cart racing. If you have been wondering about those strange noises coming from your neighbour’s garage late at night, put it down to “Billy cart fever”!

They are probably busily putting the finishing touches on the fastest, most original, ugliest or just plain best billycart on the Granite Belt.

“Billy cart fever” is alive and well and there are plenty of devotees convinced they can blitz the rest of the field in the two premier billy-cart events ready to roll in the southern Granite Belt in the coming weeks.

There is still time to tweak the performance of your prototype before the “Ballandean Billy Cart Bash” on Sunday 13 September. This event will be hotly contested and will be followed by “Billy carts on the Border” at Wallangarra on Saturday 17 October. The fun in Wallangarra will get underway about 8.30am. The race site is visible and easily accessible from the New England Highway adjacent to Lion’s Park which will be used for parking and a wide range of other activities on the day.

Refreshments and a barbecue will be available. There will also be a very appropriate display of vintage peddle cars provided by a local collector.

There are almost unlimited opportunities coming the way of any billycart tragic to “feed their fever”.

Let the fun begin as a whole new generation of kids get to enjoy the age-old thrill of Billy cart racing. For some of us, it will be an opportunity to indulge in memories of a childhood long gone; those gravel-rashed knees and elbows, mercurochrome and iodine and almighty busters in Ballandean.

BARRACLOUGH AND HINZE WRAP UP AUGUST MEMBERS of the Stanthorpe golf club wrapped up August with an end-of-month medley 4BBB Stableford. The popular event sponsored by

Howard and Sons was once again highly contested and there were some close scores returned by the big field. Dylan Barraclough and Ken Hinze combined for a best score of 50 points to win the event. Both players had a good round, contributing equally to the good score - mostly three pointers topped off by a massive five points from Hinze following a birdie at the seventh hole.

Also scoring well to take the runners-up spot was the father and daughter combination of Rob and Hannah Reeves. The pair both contributed to their overall score of 49 points but just couldn’t nail that elusive five pointer.

Minor prizes were awarded to Kev Rowling for his pin shot at 3/12 and Rob Reeves pin shot at 17. No ladies hit the green at 3/12 but Hannah Reeves held best approach at the ladies’ 17.

Pro-pins were claimed by Aaron Simmers at 1/10, Fred Wharton at 5/14 and Rob Reeves at 9/18.

In the run down those with scores of 43 and better collected a ball each. The day wrapped up with a barbecue lunch and players would like to thank Margaret for her work.

Along with the start of spring and the new month comes the monthly medal and putting competition sponsored by Ian Pickering. Keith Barnett is in the starter’s box and players are reminded that tee off is now from the later time of 11.30am.

The men’s and ladies foursomes will be played on Sunday 13 September so now is the time to get a partner organised. The next round of the match play is due to be completed by 19 September.

Also looming on the horizon is the Inglewood Open on Sunday 20 September and Richard’s bus is already full.

The roster for the starter’s box is looking a bit thin - organisers are hoping to have the next month filled, so if you are able to help, put up your hand.

SOUTHERN STARS BRING HOME ASHES AUSTRALIA'S all-conquering Ladies Cricket team, the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars earlier this week delivered what their male counterparts could not when they regained the Ashes with a match to spare. In the second of the T20 games played in Hove, the Aussie girls were restricted to a low total of 7/107 but some outstanding bowling with the new ball from Renee Farrell (3-17) and Ellyse Perry (2-13) cleaned up England’s top order. The hosts were bowled out for that magic Australian cricket figure of 87 in the final over.

The win wrapped up the Ashes for the girls which is played in an ODI, test and T20 format.

The Southern Stars won the ODI series 2-1 ODI series win and followed that with a comprehensive victory in the one-off Test match. They

needed just one win from the three T20 games to reclaim the Ashes for the first time since 2013.

Young Australian captain Meg Lanning once again led the team magnificently. The public is warming to the ladies game and the success of this talented group. The game was televised live on free to air TV prior to the T20 Australia England men’s game which resulted in a five-run win for the Poms.

‘GARRA BOOK THEIR PLACE IN BRL GF THE Stanthorpe Gremlins will host the Wallangarra Rams in the 2015 BR grand final this weekend after Wallangarra scored a gutsy win over their more-fancied rivals Tenterfield last weekend. Tenterfield have been notorious this season for their slow starts, but last weekend at Rugby League Park, they started the game well and had a handy 20-12 lead at half time despite losing their hooker Jake Kelly in the 20th minute with a dislocated knee.

In an exciting second half, Wallangarra hit back shortly after the break to narrow the score to 20-18. As play shifted from end to end, both sides scored tries and supporters were out of their seats on their feet.

Tenterfield clung to a 26-22 lead but with 20 minutes still on the clock, Wallangarra scored to draw level at 26 all and with the conversion led for the first time in the game. The Rams extended their lead to 34-26 but the Tigers were not going away and scored again to narrow the margin to 34-32. Despite their strong finish, the Tigers were not able to bridge the gap and Wallangarra on the back of some great play from the elusive Coedie Tandy and Matt Rouen booked their place in the grand final. It is a job well done for the Rams club who last year were a football basket case.

The players and officials have done a fantastic job to turn the club around, and I would like to personally congratulate them on a job well done. Of course there is one more mountain to climb this weekend when they take on the Gremlins at Sullivan Oval. The Rams met and beat the Gremlins in their final fixture game two weeks ago and that win will give them confidence going into Saturday’s game. The Gremlins however will start short- priced favourites after a stellar season that has seen them take all before them. The Gremlins have all three teams in the grand final action this weekend.

The reserve grade will take on Tenterfield after the semi final was abandoned at half time due to lighting problems. The Tigers were leading at half time.

The action gets underway at 12.30pm with the Reserve Grade grand final to be followed by the Ladies League Tag final. The A Grade grand final is due to kick off at 3pm GREMLINETTES HOME IN A NAILBITER THE Stanthorpe ladies, the Gremlinettes stepped up last Saturday in Tenterfield to secure a lastminute win over the Ramettes and their place in the 2015 league tag grand final. It was a blow to the Wallangarra girls who led for most of the game, however, all honours are with the Stanthorpe girls who have really improved in the past few months. Some early mistakes from the Gremlinettes allowed the Wallangarra girls to skip away to a nice lead but the Stanthorpe players showed plenty of composure to fight back and grab a 14-12 lead. The tough match last Saturday is just the hit out the Stanthorpe girls needed to take on the undefeated Tigerettes in the grand final this weekend where they will be playing for the Casey O’Connor Cup. The Tigerettes have produced outstanding form again this season and will be tough to beat as they strive for back-toback premierships.

HARRIS SCORES IN RRR JESSE Harris did best of the 26 players in last week’s Red Rooster Rumble. A score of 22 gave Harris a two-point win over eventual runner-up Sean Morrison (20) who had to survive a count from quite a few players. Balls down the line went to Dale Derrick, Brett Donovan, Judy Lester, Ross Kingston and Phil Economidis also with 20 points and finally Leon Stickland with 19.

The pins went the way of Ross Kingston and Leon Strickland with no one on the 16th. A reminder that the Red Rooster Rumble will be on the front nine this week.

Local Sport McKEEN IN GOOD FORM A GROUP of 50 men turned out for the single stableford competition in Warwick on Saturday.

Showing some good form, Gordon McKeen’s score of 43 was good enough to land him a win over runner-up Bill McKillop (41).

The rundowns went the way of Laurence King (40), Brendon Jones, David Craggs and Ross Kingston (38), Greg Sellick (37), Len Williams, Mick Payne and Peter Morrison (36). The pins went to Laurie King, Dion Phillips, Laurie King, Mal Galloway, Keith Farrell and Geoff Hinze.

Sunday saw another good field competing in the four-ball competition on the Warwick golf club’s patron Rodney MacDonald’s Day. Dion Phillips and Trish Roberts emerged as the winning combination with a score of 47 points. The winning combination finished a handy three points ahead of runners-up Don Warrener and Joely Singleton.

The ball rundown went to Pete Boney and Patsy McIntosh 43, Kath and Peter Morrison 43 and Tony and Majella Kahler with 42. Mr Fishing Eddie Kemp landed a score of 36 to win the single event.

Pins went to Stanthorpe golfer Hannah Reeves, Eddie Kemp, Michelle Wright and Tony Kahler.

This Saturday members will play for the Monthly Medal, and Sunday of course is Father’s Day. A reminder that all bookings can be made through the pro shop (4661 3664).

DUDGEON ON SONG THE action out Inglewood way on the SSAA range was here and there - the fifth weekend of the month meant it was a free for all day however there was an Action Pistol competition with the Peter Jones Mark11 modified running target.

Stephanie Dudgeon was on song. Her scores good enough to force Peter Jones and Tom Donald into the minor placings.

There was one other positive result - in the ongoing building department - there are now two end walls on the pistol bays. Shotting the construction site out of the park Things will return to normal this weekend Sunday is a clay target day and the club is expecting a group of guest shooters from the USA which should make for an interesting competition.

BUSY WEEK FOR MALLET PLAYERS ONLY a small group of association croquet players took advantage of the good conditions last week. Par Schnoor certainly made the most of the conditions, winning her game against Margaret Dickenson 26-13. Joy Newman and Heather Widderick teamed up to defeat Andrea Denkewitz and Jenny Tunbridge in a closely fought game.

The final score 23 - 20. Denkewitz played well and had a break of three. Although beaten in the game, Turnbridge had one break of four.

COWBOYS GALLOP AWAY WITH TITLE THE Warwick Cowboys showed plenty of grit and determination when they upset Highfields at Fr Ranger Oval on Sunday. The win not only assured the A Grade side of a top-five finish and a place in the finals but handed them the club championship title for 2015.

The win comes on the back of captain coach Matt Gainey’s announcement that he will be hanging up his boots at the end of the season. It will be a fitting end to Gainey’s career if he can guide the Cowboys to what many would have seen at the start of the season as an unlikely win.

Gainey’s “A” grade charges had to do things the hard way on Sunday. They got off to a flyer, scoring twice in the opening 10 minutes and scooting out to a 10-nil lead. Highfields hit back after Warwick’s sizzling start and at half time led 20-18. The visitors extended their lead in the second half and with 15 minutes remaining looked to have a commanding lead with the scores at 34-18.

In sensational turn around, Warwick showed plenty of determination to reel in Highfields.

Centre Joe Fuimaono was outstanding. He scored three tries in pressure cooker situation to hand the Cowboys a win, their top-five spot and the club championship. His performance drew nothing but praise. “Joey Fuimaono was just outstanding today. He scored four tries,“ Warwick

captain-coach Matt Gainey said.

Warwick will now go into Saturday’s elimination semi-final against Dalby full of confidence.

They have beaten all but one of the top five teams, minor premiers Wattles.

Warwick also had a win in the Under 18 and Reserve grade. Warwick C Grade will meet Gatton this weekend in a sudden death match.

WIN FOR PAGE JULIE Page had a great win on Sunday at Stanthorpe Sporters to defeat runner-up Angelo Doorley. Run-downs went to Dominic Doorley and John Rawlings. Hannah Reeves had the Best Gross and took the Pin Shot on the 12th. Phil Zikan picked up the Pin shot at the 17 and a meat tray to boot. The Pro Pin went begging. Marg Locke was also seen exiting in the company of a meat tray.

TOUR WRAP THE Wanderers Cricket Tour wrapped recently and another Central Queensland tour is done and dusted. The cricket squad a balance of youth and experience completed their tour undefeated in the six games played and showcased some outstanding young talent on the fringes of representative careers.

The tour was an opportunity for several young players to state their case for higher honours, and there are several who have come under close scrutiny. Left hand opening bat Aryan Jain, who plays for Brisbane Souths, impressed throughout the tour and won the award Player of the Tour.

Do not be surprised if you hear the name of this young bloke, who is of Indian heritage, bandied around in Bulls circles in the near future.

For several of the tourists, including the very experienced former Australian coach John Buchanan, there were several new experiences including the Blacall clay pan pitch.

Two of the talented young players Jack Beath and Grayson Jones taking part in the tour were sponsored by Queensland Cricket.

“This tour is a great opportunity to meet new people and receive some mentoring from experienced players. Before the Brisbane Grade Cricket competition starts, I’d like to score plenty of runs and improve my game,” Grayson said.

The Wanderers played for a special trophy in memory of Doug Gesch when they hit Barcaldine. ‘Geschy’ supported and co-ordinated the Wanderers games in Barcaldine for over 20 years.

He was very passionate about all levels of cricket and tirelessly supported many local groups within his community.

Eight players split into two groups of four playing doubles. All games were hotly contested with all players pulling out their best performances for some time.

In game one, the first group score was 13 12. Liz Ellway top-scored with seven hoops. The second group score was another close one final score 13 - 11. For the second consecutive week, Val Fancourt was the high achiever, top scoring and striking two “hole in one”.

In the second round of games, the first team scored 10 - 9. Bill Golding top scored. Judy Locke took the honours in the second team’s game top scoring with eight hoops. The result another close one 12-11.

Nine players contested gateball on Friday, and the results were very close with two drawn games. Whites won one game by a single point while Reds won the last game 16-8. The player of the day was Grace Howard who was in great form.

Plenty of major tournaments happening at the moment. The Australian Gateball Championships are being held at Wynnum this weekend. The championships are held every four years and 17 teams are competing. Three teams from China, one from New Zealand, will meet players from New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.
