Backpacker surge By JOLENE OGLE NOOSA has become the backpacker capital of the Sunshine Coast, according to the latest figures from the International Visitor Survey (IVS) released by Tourism Research Australia. Sunshine Coast Destination Limited (SCDL) CEO Simon Ambrose said the survey results showed an 11.5 per cent increase in backpacker numbers to Noosa. “Backpackers now represent more than 55 per cent of Noosa’s international visitors, and evidence suggests backpackers tend to return later as higher-yielding tourists that will benefit the whole of Sunshine Coast,” he said. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said the increase in backpackers to Noosa was wonderful and said successful campaigns targeting travellers had paid off. “Tourism Noosa has led the charge in directly targeting the important backpacker/adventure market, partnering with TNT Magazine in the UK and Europe and conducting extensive retail agent roadshows around Australia,” he said. “It’s pleasing to see these efforts have resulted in the latest increases in adventure travellers to Noosa.” Overall, the survey found the Sunshine Coast, including Noosa, continued its double digit international visitor growth with a 10.6 per cent increase

in overseas arrivals fuelled by tourism campaigns in northern Europe and New Zealand. The figures were announced on Wednesday and found the UK took over as the Sunshine Coast’s international source market, up 23.7 per cent to 59,000, followed closely by New Zealand with 58,000 visitors, with Germany once again producing the highest growth figures with a 30.6 per cent increase. The strong growth in international arrivals saw the Sunshine Coast attract 257,000 visitors for the year until 30 June 2015. Mr Ambrose said SCDL campaigns in Europe -especially Germany - as well as New Zealand were producing sustained benefits for all local areas within the Sunshine Coast region. “The benefits of targeting mature markets such as Germany, the UK and New Zealand - which really understand and appreciate the diversity of what the Sunshine Coast offers - continues to pay dividends,” Mr Ambrose said. “The English may have won the Ashes, but they’re voting with their feet and escaping England to come to the Sunshine Coast!” Mr Massingham said an increase in international visitor numbers was great for the region, and Tourism Noosa would continue to focus on increasing visitor spend in Noosa. continued on Page 3

LOCAL police are reminding drivers to slow down when approaching a school zone with one driver caught doing more than twice the speed limit last week. The offence resulted in an immediate loss of licence for the male motorbike rider who was caught doing 84 km/h in a 40 km/h school zone last week. They say they are growing frustrated with people who choose not to lock their car as the latest statistics show the Noosa police region has experienced a 4.9 per cent increase in theft form cars while all other regions in Queensland have seen a decrease in the number of break-ins. Office in Charge of Noosa Heads Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said the areas being targeted by thieves are expanding throughout the Noosa shire. “Most of the theft used to happen along Claude Batten Drive, Noosa Heads, but the areas affected are spreading,” he said. Sen Sgt McReight said it was becoming more common for opportunistic thieves to steal from unlocked cars at work sites and throughout industrial areas such as Rene Street and Venture Drive in Noosaville. “People are just walking along, trying car doors and when one is open they take advantage,” he said. “We have made significant arrests over the past 12 months to try and curb the rise in theft from cars, but people really need to take the steps to secure their vehicle. “It’s very simple - lock your car.”

By JOLENE OGLE HIS legs may be sore and his feet blistered, but North Shore tattoo artist Sam Clark has never felt better after walking more than 160km from Newcastle to Sydney. Sam set off on Saturday 1 August for the 11-day walk to raise funds for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation in honour of his 18-month-old niece Saskia Howell who was born with Kabuki syndrome, which affects about one in 90,000 Australian children. Sam said while he held up better than expected throughout the walk, there were times he wondered what he had got himself into. “The walk was crazy, not what I expected,” he said. “By about the second or third day I was wondering why am I doing this, but I made it.” Sam’s wife Polly joined him for sections of the walk and said apart from a baby possum trying to bunker in for the night in their tent, the walk was “incredible”. “I loved it because I wasn’t doing it all day, every day,” she said. “We saw some amazing things along the way and it was all about being one with nature. It was incredible.” When Sam set off for the walk he hoped to raise $15,000 but the tattoo artist smashed the fund-raising goal raising over $20,000 for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation, which helps sick children by providing much-needed, life-saving medical equipment.

THIS week in honour of The Noosa Project, we celebrate the hard work and dedication of the newly formed Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade, which will deliver muchneeded food hampers to families in need throughout the region. For most of us, Christmas is a time to spend with loved ones sharing gifts and tucking into a scrumptious lunch with friends and family. But for many local families in Noosa Shire, affording the basics at Christmas time is almost impossible, let alone any gifts to put under the tree. Last year, Noosa local Trish Bignall decided it was time to spread a little Christmas cheer to local families by calling in her friends to form the Sunshine Coast branch of the Basket Brigade. The Basket Brigade began when Anthony Robbins decided to help families in need after his family received bags of food on

Since then the Basket Brigade has grown throughout the United States and Australia, with headquarters in most of the major cities of Australia, and now the Basket Brigade has come to Noosa and will this year deliver over 50 hampers to families in need. Trish said she had always heard of the Basket Brigade but last year decided to bring the food drive to the Sunshine Coast. “We only had three weeks to get it done last year,” she said of the mammoth task. But Trish and her dedicated band of volunteers were able to deliver 25 hampers to local fami-

lies, helping 96 people have a brighter Christmas. This year, Trish has rallied the troops including Angela Williment, Emma Wright and De Marczynski, who has volunteered with the Brisbane Basket Brigade for more than 15 years, plus Geoff Edwards of Bendigo Bank Cooroy who chipped in $500 to help stock Christmas hampers and Cooroy Supa IGA. The Basket Brigade will dedicate countless hours to the collection, storage and sorting of donations, before spending a day packing hampers to suit the families receiving the basket, then delivering the baskets to families from Caloundra to Pomona.

De said it could be hard delivering baskets to families who might be embarrassed or unwilling to accept help, but she said the joy of giving outweighed any negatives. “It’s a real thrill,” she said. “It can be quite emotional and I have cried in the car every now and then. But it does feel good to help.” Trish said the brigade tried to target families who “fall through the cracks” and didn't receive assistance from other large charity organisations. “A lot of people don’t ask for help,” she said. “So we rely on businesses, schools and organisations to refer them to us.” De said people who need hampers can vary from families facing hardship after a parent loses a job to a long-term illness affecting the family. The Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade is already busy collecting tinned foods, gifts and special Christmas treats for this year’s delivery on 12 December. The team is in need of long-life foods such as tinned vegetables, Christmas puddings, and gifts for children of all ages and parents. Walk for missing toddler William IT'S been a year since William Tyrrell went missing from his grandma’s home in Kendall, NSW, and local communities around Australia are coming together to join the search for the toddler. The Eumundi Rotary Club and the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade will join forces with locals to Walk4William and raise awareness of the missing boy on Saturday 12 September. Rotary Club of Eumundi event organiser Melissa Isles said the club hoped the community would join the campaign to raise awareness for William. “He was taken from his nanna’s front yard a year ago on 12 September in NSW,” she said. “Police are hoping someone somewhere knows something that can help locate William. The more

Walkers will travel from the amphitheatre on Memorial Drive towards the top of town and finish at the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade station, where there will be a sausage sizzle, Spiderman cake and coffee and tea. The cost to participate in the walk is a gold coin donation with all funds collected going directly to the Where’s William charity. Quarry tapped for road upgrade NOOSA Council will reactivate its Ringtail Creek quarry to supply materials for the $4.7 million Dr Pages Road upgrade. Planning and Infrastructure director Martin Drydale said activating the quarry short-term to provide the materials would help keep costs down. “Using the Ringtail Creek quarry also reduces the impact of haulage trucks on the local road network," Mr Drydale said. He said there would likely be two blasts at the quarry to provide bulk fill for embankment earthworks, with the potential also to provide base course crushed rock. “The chosen contractor will also need to source some material from elsewhere because rock at the Ringtail Creek quarry is not suitable for top course," Mr Drydale said. “The first blast is set to happen within the next two weeks, and council is available to talk to local residents to answer any questions and address any concerns they may have." In a press statement to media, council said sealing Dr Pages Road and part of Kinmond Creek Road would provide the missing link in Noosa’s hinterland tourist drive, offering a fully sealed loop from Tewantin out through the hinterland centres.

So cool to car-pool By JOLENE OGLE BROTHERS Michael and Mark Vaney have put green transport back on the agenda offering a unique commuter service to Brisbane for Noosa locals. Commuter Xpress is a car-pooling service where 12 people can use one van to travel to Brisbane and back again five days a week. Michael and Mark said the innovative commuting service would save users money and time each week as they could relax on the way to and from work, while Commuter Xpress took care of all related costs to the running and upkeep of the vehicles. Five return trips to Brisbane from Noosa would cost a user $210, but casual and part-time workers can also use the service instead of public transport, which can take longer and sometimes cost more. Michael said the aim behind the service was to reduce the traffic on the road and the pollution in the atmosphere. “By setting up one van, we have taken 10 cars off the road,” he said. “By setting up 50 vans we can take 500 cars off the road and that’s great.” The vans offer a comfortable, air-conditioned commute to Brisbane and will also operate out of the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast, with plans to have more than 50 vans on the road. When the Sound turned pink! MORE than 180 people helped turn Noosa Sound into a sea of pink on Sunday 30 August for the inaugural Paddle in Pink event. Event organiser Lachlan Stevens of Boardwalk Boats said it was overwhelming to see the support of the local community. “It’s great how the day ran so smoothly and we had such a positive response from everyone,” he said. The Paddle in Pink event raised over $3500 in registration fees and donations, with more donations expected to be received in the coming days. Local businesses such as Lorna Jane and BCF, who donated a kayak, seat and paddle to one lucky winner, also jumped on board to support the event. Event patron Councillor Sandy Bolton said the fund-raiser was inspirational, colourful and fabulous. “Seeing 180 paddlers in their best pink supporting and giving unified strength in the fight against cancer was a moving and incredible sight,” she said. “It truly was a beautiful day with beautiful people. A reminder of just how truly special our community is.” Breast cancer survivor and National Breast Cancer Foundation Sunshine Coast chair Sandra Harding said it was amazing to see so many people turn out in support of breast cancer survivors. “It was really great to see Noosa Sound turn into a sea of pink,” she said. “We even had people come from Victoria and interstate to take part.” Sandra said this year’s inaugural event was such a success the team are looking forward to planning a bigger and even better event next year. “Next year will be huge,” she said. “We’re getting ready to prepare for a big one.”

Wallace House honours Holly SHE is known as much as a teacher as an artist but this month the focus will be well and truly on the art of Holly Marion Simpson as she holds an exhibition at the Butter factory. A treasured icon at the Noosa Arts and Crafts Centre, Holly has done much for Wallace House and an exceedingly large number of aspiring artists. Loved by students her classes always had waiting lists as students clambered for her tuition. A self-taught artist with a natural ability that was enhanced by a lot of practice and trial and error, Holly was generous with her information and her patience with beginners was phenomenal. “Yes, I would like to say that joining Wallace House was one of the best things that could possibly have happened to me in the last 20 years since I’ve been living back in Australia,” she said. “At ’The House’, I learned

to paint (and even become a teacher) and made wonderful friends, and enjoyed the concerts, the afternoon teas, the exhibitions, the garden parties, the fancy dress dinners, the meetings and last, but not least, the changes and improvements that have made the wonderful Wallace House what it is today. “Two things stand out clearly for me, the year the house burned down and the year we moved back into the rebuilt house and continued in the new, spacious, well-lit rooms. “I started to teach watercolours at Wallace House about 1994 and loved the groups and remember how much humour and fun we all put into our times together. “The proudest moment was when we - the WOW (Wonder of Watercolour) group put on a huge morning tea in aid of saving the koalas. “We had a lovely little koala from the RSPCA to visit and we decorated three

One of Holly's artworks. rooms and set the tables and all the artists brought in delicious homemade cakes for the tea. “Visitors poured in and we made nearly $2000 on that day, including money from raffling a painting of a koala that I had done especially for the day.” Holly will have a retrospective exhibition as the Pop Up artist at the Butter Factory for September and there will be a morning tea on Saturday 26 September at 11am for a celebration of Holly and her contribution to Wallace House and the local art scene. All Holly’s friends and students are invited.

Kindy’s birthday celebrations PAST, present and future students of the C and K Tewantin Community Kindergarten gathered at the centre for the kindy’s 50th birthday celebrations on Saturday 29 August. Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, along with Noosa councillors Frank Pardon and Frank Wilkie were among the crowd who gathered to celebrate the building’s history. Since opening in 1965, more than 3000 students have enjoyed

the peaceful surrounds of the community kindy, which used to be the Tinbeerwah State School building. Bought for 146 pounds, the building was transported to where it stands today on Doonella Street in Tewantin. In 1969 the kindy became affiliated with the Creche and Kindergarten Association (C and K) and has since had many extensions to create a much-loved kindy today.

Our kids by the book TINKERBELL, Willy Wonka and even Darren Lockyer made an appearance at the 70th annual Book Fest celebrations held throughout Noosa last week. The Children’s Book Council Australia (CBCA) annual celebration of all things books, authors and illustrators was greeted with enthusiasm this year as students and teachers throughout Noosa got in the spirit for Book Week’s celebrations from 22 to 28 August. Turbines power on By JOLENE OGLE THE future is looking bright for remote communities as Noosa Engineering and Crane Hire gets ready to build 80 innovative power turbines for Indonesia. In a coup for local job growth, Noosa Engineering and Crane Hire will be responsible for building the in-current hydrokinetic turbines that will offer a cost-effective, environmentally safe form of power generation for some of Indonesia’s most remote villages. Coolum-based company Nextera Energy is the team which created the turbine that will harness the power of water at four times the rate of a normal turbine, keeping remote communities powered-up for longer. Nextera Energy chairman David Peel said specially designed blades on the turbine offered four times the force and therefore four times the power of a standard single-blade turbine. For use in the water, the twin turbines will be suspended from a floating platform and lowered into the body of water such as the ocean or river. The force of the water pushing through the turbines will power a generator to then power remote communities, and with simple maintenance, the in-current hydrokinetic turbines will offer a low-cost option to dieselpowered generators. Mr Peel said the turbines would be used in remote villag-

These turbines offer a simple, environmentally safe and sustainable option for powering these communities.” Cr Pardon said it was great to see innovative technology being built in Noosa. “This is great for the local area, and we need more of this in Noosa,” he said.

The local SES are calling for volunteers as they approach storm season.

Volunteers wanted ahead of storm season LOCAL Disaster co-ordinator Martin Drydale is urging residents to join their local State Emergency Service (SES) branch. Mr Drydale said SES volunteers provided a vital service to the community during times of disaster and the local branch needed more volunteers to help it maintain the level of service residents relied on. “SES volunteers play a vital role in support of the local community,“ Mr Drydale said. “They assist with missing person searches, flood rescues, temporary repairs from noosa.starcommunity.com.au

storm damage, traffic control and help out at local events.“ Noosa’s local State Emergency Service branch is currently calling for volunteers. SES volunteer Carol Watkins says, “Being an SES volunteer is very rewarding because you can see first-hand the difference you are making to the community." “We are there when people are in need and are one of the first services to arrive at the scene of a local disaster. We also work hard to help prevent disasters affecting people, such as our successful sandbagging program which helps prevent properties from flood-

ing," she said. All SES members receive comprehensive training in areas such as first aid, chainsaw use and safety, traffic control, radio communications, flood boat operations and working safely at heights. Noosa’s local SES is soon to commence a new schedule of volunteer training sessions on Monday evenings - 7pm to 9pm. Training and membership is free. By RON LANE IN THIS day and age when the “Me” factor is becoming so prevalent, it is indeed very refreshing to meet two such ladies as Lexie Mawn and Clare Robinson. Both ladies have three major characteristics in common; both are country women, both very loyal, and both very dedicated to the Noosa Pirates Rugby League Club. For Lexie, her involvement with football started in the year 2000 when her two sons Nick and Mitch joined the Pirates Junior Rugby League club. “They played up through the junior grades and played U/18 and U/20s. It was all good times for me as well as the boys. The parents involved were great people, so in 2009 it only seemed natural for me to continue what I love doing; so I went into the senior club.” Following this, Lexie quickly became involved in management, and in 2012 was appointed to the position of club secretary. “When I first went into the senior club, they were really great times for the Pirates.” “Chris O’ Grady was president and his wife Sue was secretary; and to cap it off, our head coach was the legendary Noel Goldthorpe. Goldy did well as a coach and took us to three premierships. Chris and Sue were great, they steered the club through some tough times and when they retired, they both finished their careers as Life Members. Their awards were well deserved.” “To add to this, two years ago the committee instigated the O’ Grady Medal named in recognition of Chris' outstanding contribution. This award goes to the Club Person of The Year, and it is held in such high regard that if there is no-one who stands head and shoulders above all, then it is not awarded.” Lexie was born in Wallumbilla and educated in Roma. On leaving high school, her introduction into the workforce was on the staff of the local Stock and Station Agency in Roma. After several years, Lexie moved to Noosa, married and spent time nursing. But it was in 1996 that Lexie (who is a very small lady) really bit the bullet and joined the Queensland Police Force. “I spent 16 years and six months in the force. When I retired, I was doing plain clothes work as a member of the Child Protection Unit based at Noosa. It was pretty daunting stuff, but very rewarding. Some experiences will stay

Lexi Mawn, Deb Locke, Sue Arnold and Clare Robinson. 143811 with me forever.” About her size she laughs. “Well,” she said, “I couldn’t hold back, I just had to go for it, and because of my attitude, they realised that I was dead serious, so it was all good from there on.” Among the ladies she met and was to work with for many long hours at Pirates was Clare Robinson. Clare, who hails from Cooroy, started her association with Rugby League when some Cooroy boys joined suburbs in Gympie in 1973. Then Noosa Pirates became established in 1975 with the team playing home games at the Rodeo grounds in Cooroy. Then in the 1980s, the club moved to what is now known as Pirate Park in Tewantin, and from then on Clare continued her support, eventually taking a seat on the committee; a seat she still holds today. “Also with two sons Craig and Mark playing for Pirates, I guess you could say the club

became my life, and I have loved every minute. Born in Nambour, Clare shifted to Cooroy with her family in her young years, and obtained her education at the local schools. “We lived in Cooroy itself, then later my family bought a small crops farm out along Neusavale Road. By the time I became involved with Pirates, I had worked in the bar trade and hospitality industry, so I put my hand up to help in the canteen with Sue O’Grady and Robyn Wales. We did that during the game, then after we moved inside to run the bar. It was during these years that I met up with Lexie and we became good friends.’’ Both ladies agree that some of the major achievements in their time have been winning three premierships in a row, the success of the Noosa Pirates Rodeo (their big fund-raiser) and the installation of the floodlights for the playing field. But they agreed, we couldn’t have

achieved this without the great team of committee people and workers. Clare who was involved with the Rodeo right from the start remembers the first. "Working with Sue O’ Grady and other ladies, we were worried about these big tough cowboys; how would we control them after the events were over and they came into the bar. Well you wouldn’t believe it. The first cowboy walked to the bar, touched his hat and said, Evening mam could I have four rum and cokes please mam. They were like that all evening,” she said laughing. “Perfect gentleman; what a relief.” As Clare said, “Sometimes it has been hard and the season's long, but we wouldn’t swap it for the world.” Just two great ladies among the many; and all our people.

Harry lives, moves and breathes bicycle action HARRY Bush, a Year 12 student at Good Shepherd Lutheran College Noosa, was recently selected as a finalist for the Queensland Training Awards (North Coast Region) for his training in Bicycle Workshop Operations. Harry was nominated to enter the Queensland Training Award’s School Based Apprentice of the Year in April. As part of the nomination, Harry had to complete a written entry and also be interviewed by a panel of judges from the Department of Education and Training. The North Coast Region received nominations from the local government regions of Morton Bay, Sunshine Coast, Noosa, Gympie, Fraser Coast and Bundaberg. Since September 2013, Harry has been employed by Cognition, a local bike shop and the qualification for which he is training is a Certificate III in Bicycle Workshop Operations (Mechanical). His trainer is TAFE Queensland Skills Tech. “Having raced bikes competi-

tively from the age of four, it’s not surprising that Harry enrolled in a school-based apprenticeship at a bike shop,” said Mr Graeme Handreck, Good Shepherd Lutheran College’s Career Guidance Counsellor. Harry is doing what he loves. “His passion for his sport has continued, and Harry is currently a member of the Under 19 Junior Elite Australian Downhill Mountain Bike Team,” Mr Handreck said. As an award finalist, Harry and his parents were invited to attend the Queensland Training Awards 2015 - North Coast Region Final Presentation Dinner and Ceremony on 1 August. Unfortunately, Harry was unable to attend the presentation as that same day he was racing at a downhill mountain bike event in Mont-SaintAnne, Quebec, Canada. However, his father was there to accept the award on his behalf. One week after the Canadian event, Harry travelled to Windham in the USA for another race and this week he again heads overseas to race in the ‘World Titles’ at Andorra, a mountainous area near southern France.

RECENT events have confirmed Noosa Council’s propensity for subterfuge - how much did de-amalgamation really cost? Dictatorships only tell ratepayers the good news; they don’t inform the community about operational problems, cultural cutbacks or the financial shortcomings that restricted capital works - Noosa’s infrastructure is not being properly maintained. However, perhaps the greatest charade is the disbandment of Noosa Biosphere Limited and the formation of Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation. Another disgraceful conflict of interest that will facilitate associated organisations. Coupled with retrograde policies and a lack of vision for the economy, this governance is in urgent need of reform. John Lobb, Peregian Springs.

Pirate play I’M SORRY to hear of your letter writer’s disappointment with the new Pirate Playground at Noosaville (Noosa Today, 27 August). I can assure parents that all of the equipment is from accredited suppliers and conforms to strict Australian standards. Council is not aware of any major incidents at the playground, and the community’s response to the new equipment has been overwhelmingly positive. Good to be back AFTER three months of travelling through regional Queensland and reading local newspapers it is very refreshing to return to Noosa and again enjoy your paper as a positive and very well constructed newspaper; a real standout among your peers. While on the subject of Noosa positives, three businesses worthy of mention; Aldi for their brilliantly competitive prices and superefficient customer service; the Reject Shop at Noosaville for their great service and friendliness. But, I’m sure there are many more local businesses worthy of a mention. As commented in your recent front page story questioning the $4.7 million expenditure of the Kin Kin road sealing while there is much work needing to be done on high volume roads in Noosa and Tewantin, including our much used Reef Street - sometimes council moves in unusual directions. New council hope LET’S hope the new Noosa Council following the March 2016 council election will be more receptive to the Noosa economic findings of the council-funded recent report prepared by the accredited AEC Group Pty Ltd. Unlike our current Mayor Playford and Councillor Wellington, who had no support for the report. Perhaps these councillors do not want to face the facts but it is clear there are urgent needs in Noosa to have more and better jobs, affordable housing, and a stronger business economy. Lack of knowledge I WRITE in response to Mr Richard Hack’s (Noosa Today, 27 August) criticism of Noosa Council’s commitment to bitumen seal the 4.7-kilometre gravel section of Dr Pages Road, between Tewantin and Kin Kin. Although Mr Hack suggests council’s capital works budget might otherwise be allocated to address traffic problems elsewhere, over the years the hinterland has too often been the coast's poor cousin when it comes to infrastructure spending, particularly in regard to roadworks. It is widely accepted the upgrading of Dr Pages Road improves access to the coast for the Kin Kin community and once completed will provide a scenic hinterland tourist drive. However, the other reasons this project must proceed, including its environmental benefits cannot be underestimated. A sealed road network between Noosa and Rainbow Beach will help reduce excessive 4WD traffic on North Shore, particularly at high tide. The impact on the beach and sand dunes of peak season beach traffic is wellknown and a scenic drive to Fraser Island and Rainbow could be marketed as a cost effective alternative to the beach’s use as a highway. There is also the problem of seasonal flooding on Dr Pages Road which results in significant erosion of gravel into the adjacent Kin Kin Creek. In the long-term, a bitumen sealed road will actually save money as ratepayers would

no longer foot the bill for repairs and the frequent replacement of the gravel surface. Another important issue is safety. Currently Dr Pages Road traffic includes tourist buses, RVs, trucks and of course Kin Kin residents. On its narrow winding sections there have been a number of accidents over the years and even more near misses. Dr Pages Road is increasingly being used as a local delivery haulage route for the Kin Kin Quarry; should it be left in its current condition, it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident. Regarding Mr Hack’s spurious allegation that Mayor Playford somehow has a conflict of interest on the issue because of his family history in the area, this is a preposterous and offensive assertion and shows no understanding of council procedure for declaring a material conflict of interest. Well done THANKYOU, Noosa Today for publishing on the front cover (27 August) the article about Benny Pike and his recent drink driving charge. Many years ago our mother was killed by a man of similar age to Mr Pike, who was also behind the wheel, driving while drunk. At the time our family of five children, aged from 9-19 years, was left without a mother and with a father who suffered permanent injuries for the rest of his life. When I read this article, my first thought was, if Benny Pike knew the real and long-term effects this tragedy had on our family, he might think twice about the consequences of getting behind the wheel and driving while drunk. Alarmingly though, this is not the first time Benny Pike had been caught behind the wheel drunk, in fact this is his seventh time. That’s seven times he’s done this, and put not only his own life in danger, but also the lives of many, many others. When will he ever learn? Benny Pike might have his fair share of life’s problems, we all do, but on the matter of driving while intoxicated, he is a repeat and serial offender. No excuses accepted! We all hope he gets his just and rightful punishment in court, but will he learn from it? Probably not, he hasn’t learnt a thing from the six previous charges. And to those young people who at the time, told Benny Pike he should not be driving and called the police, congratulations and thankyou for listening and 'getting the message’ that it’s not OK to drink and drive.

Time to expand YES, I fully support the Noosa Civic expansion. It is long overdue. The only problem might be the mix of shops. We don’t need more supermarkets, junk clothes and jewellery shops - as we have plenty already - but we do need outlets like Fantastic Furniture, Freedom, Domayne, Joyce Mayne, David Jones, Myer, Country Road and/or their equivalents and shops that offer quality foods such as a gourmet delicatessen. At present Noosa residents are forced to spend their money at Maroochydore and the question must be asked as to why we should be boosting the Sunshine Coast Council economy. We should be spending our money right here, benefitting our own economy and creating jobs for our own residents. And, please, we do need an alternative to the shopping centre at Gibson Road, Noosaville. It increasingly is a disgrace. There, the Woolworths is grubby and dirty and the whole complex is crying out for an urgent upgrade. Not that Noosa Junction offers much more and no matter what is done, it remains essentially the same. How about some genuine leadership from our community heads, council or local member? The council seems all too prepared to cave in to the reactionary minority that opposes change. Growth is good and competition is healthy. V. Foster, Noosaville.

I CANNOT believe the sheer stupidity of creating a community jury. Here we are after five months of deliberations and $50,000 of ratepayers’ money, only to be told that the final verdict is ‘ban the plastic bag’. Whoop de doo! Any kid in primary school could have come up with the same answer in 10 seconds. Having 23 locals with absolutely no knowledge on any of the subjects, making decisions on the future of Noosa is absurd beyond belief. The mayor, Noel Playford would have you believe that the jury concept is a way of having the Noosa community involved in its future when actually it was implemented as a cover for difficult cases (e.g. organic waste) and to protect themselves if their decisions failed to work. Think about it - if the verdict is good, somehow the council will take credit for it, and if it’s bad, the jury and the community that it represents will be to blame. In both cases, this council will come out in front while doing absolutely nothing! The mayor and councillors were elected to do a job and make those hard decisions, not to use ratepayers’ money to have residents make these decisions for them. I truly hope that by now, the Noosa residents have realised that this council is inept and incompetent to the extreme, and that the coming elections will be their chance to get rid of them. There would be an impact LETTER writer John Cox of Noosaville wants an expanded Noosa Civic to attract more people from outside the shire. He argues this won’t have an effect on our area. But if we end up being a big, regional shopping centre, it will certainly have a large impact on traffic, our roads and thus the facilities that residents pay for. More traffic will mean longer delays, more wear and tear on roads, and probably traffic lights. It also means more empty shops in places like Noosa Junction, Noosaville etc. And what for? So we can have yet more of the same product that we already have. Maybe John’s idea of a great time is to go shopping among the same old franchise shops that appear in every modern shopping centre. But Noosa prides itself on its differences, including more friendly shopping experiences at places like Noosa Junction. It’s not about avoiding progress, it’s about being selective about how we head into the future. Surely we can learn from the mistakes of other places? The crew planted over 450 native Noosa plants with thanks to Noosa Landcare, who supplied the plants. Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) together with Noosa Landcare and an Everyone’s Environment grant, meant the team were able to start work to restore the habitat, build wildlife corridors and get rid of Singapore Daisy from the local environment.

HELPING men age successfully and memorably - is the aim of a University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) research project that’s investigating why exercise might help to prevent memory loss conditions such as dementia. Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) Honours student Kai Morris will assess oxygenation levels in the brain during three cognitive computer tasks, including playing computer games like Tetris, in males between 50 and 75 as part of his research. “We’re looking to see whether physical activity influences the results of the cognitive computer tasks and establish if increased cerebral oxygenation is linked to physical activity and increased cognitive function,” Mr Morris said. “We already know that exercise helps cognitive function, but we want to know why, so we can attempt to isolate the contributing factors that lead to cognitive decline, such as memory loss.” The Honours student is seeking male volunteers aged between 50

Peregian offers a thousand options for change Possible changes are likely for Peregian Beach as the Noosa Council reviews more than 1000 comments from the Peregian Beach consultation day intended to capture the community’s wishes on ways to improve the town. The council's infrastructure planning and design manager Nick Wellwood said the feedback showed green space, parking and pedestrian linkages to be high on the community’s priority list. He acknowledged calls for more long-term parking, within the new Rufous Street precinct, to free up village car spaces for visitors, shoppers and residents. More than 200 locals turned out on 9 May to have a say on the future of Peregian Beach and comment on existing proposals. Feedback also called for stronger pedestrian linkages between the village and new Rufous Street precinct.

More members of ‘millionaire’s row’ CORELOGIC RP Data has released the top 20 suburbs with the highest median value, with New South Wales taking out 17 of the top 20 places. In at top place is Point Piper in the Woollahra Council area, with a median property value of $5,596,397, while Centennial Park in Randwick Council area came in at second place with a median value of $5,199,324. Third place went to the luxurious suburb Vaucluse with a median value of $4,125,216 followed by Bellevue Hill with a median value of $3,810,420, both in the Woollahra Council area. In at fifth place was another New South Wales suburb, Tamarama in the Waverley Council area with a media value of $3,534,024. Queensland doesn’t make an entry into the list until the Brisbane suburb of Teneriffe appears at number 142 with a media value of $1,512,061.

Capitals push new high price mark units sold for more than $1 million.

THE pool of affordable homes in capital cities is shrinking, according to CoreLogic RP Data research director Tim Lawless.

“Over the past year, Canberra (7.4 per cent) and Sydney (7.8 per cent) have recorded the lowest proportion of house sales under $400,000 over the year.

According to Mr Lawless, most capital cities have median prices which are now above $400,000 resulting in fewer more affordable properties available for sale.

“Hobart (61.2 per cent) was the only city to have more than half of all house sales over $1 million. The unit market offers more opportunity to purchase below $400,000 however, each of Sydney (16.3 per cent), Melbourne (35.9 per cent), Perth (38.5 per cent), Darwin (29.7 per cent) and Canberra (43.3 per cent) recorded a majority of unit sales above this price point.”

Mr Lawless said over the 12 months to July 2015, combined capital city home values had increased by 11.1 per cent. According to the latest data from CoreLogic, 37.4 per cent of all home sales nationally were at less than $400,000 compared to 52 per cent between $400,000 and $1 million and 10.6 per cent over $1 million over the 12 months to June 2015. “Sales below $400,000 were at a record low over the past year and sales above $1 million were at a record high,” Mr Lawless said. “Focusing just on capital cities, 25.1 per cent of home sales were under $400,000, 60.1 per cent were between $400,000 and $1 million and 14.8 per cent were in excess of $1 million.” Mr Lawless said 20 years ago, 95.2 per cent of all capital

Commission says ‘you’re out’ THE Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) announced on Tuesday they had cancelled the licence of Peregian Beach building company, Bush and Beach Homes. The QBCC Interim Commissioner Kellie Lowe said the commission took the action last Thursday and the individuals in charge of the company now faced exclusion action. “We had initially suspended the licence of Bush and Beach Homes on 29

July immediately upon hearing of the company’s financial position,” Ms Lowe said.

Homes (licence number 1252812) are encouraged to call the QBCC 24/7 on 139 333.

“Fortunately, the QBCC’s Home Warranty Scheme will enable home owners contracted with the company to have their homes completed by other builders if their claims are approved.”

Sing-a-long to Sound of Music GRAB a blanket and pack a picnic, Starry Nights Outdoor Movies are back for spring with the first screening tomorrow night (4 September) on the Cooroy Library rooftop. I just got hold of some great photos by Dana Edmunds of my friend Mark Cunningham’s collection of reef salvage, and had to share one with you. When he’s not body surfing Oahu’s coral reefs, Mark can often be found snorkeling them, with the result that he has more than 1000 lost surfboard fins, plus many other treasures, colourfully decomposed by coralline algae. The collection has recently been shown at galleries in Hawaii, prompting the question, why? To which Mark responds: “In light of my own advancing years, these things say something to me about the passage of time. To me the message is, ‘Go sur?ng now while you can, because eventually you too will be returning to the reef.’”

YEEHAA! A Muster in the mud. It had been a long time between drinks, but the last time we were at the Gympie Muster I seem to recall it was a bit damp underfoot then too. Mind you, there have probably been 18 or 20 since then, and the festival is a different and much larger beast these days. Back then, we were with the late, great John Stokes of ABC Coast FM, who was doing a live broadcast from the soggy site, and, as I recall, was a bit ambivalent about country music, although he later fell in love with its near cousin, the ukulele. Last weekend, we were again the guests of the radio station broadcasting from the Muster, the fun crowd from Zinc 96. The morning madness maestros, Nugget and Al, had just come off air when we arrived, so we hooked straight into a beer with them, as you do at the Muster. Just between us girls, I don’t think there are too many country tunes in Nugget’s top 10, although it wouldn’t surprise me if Al Doblo goes to bed with Hank Snow and wakes up with Dolly Parton. Zinc got us in the mood for the afternoon and evening acts with a private “intimate” mini-concert featuring the great guitarist Kevin Borich (my vintage, stretching back to the La De Das) and local country sensation, Caitlyn Shadbolt, who sings like an angel. But that was about it for country. Didn’t hear a single song about a dog dying or a wife leaving for the rest of the day. We had planned to divide our time between the headline acts (like Sheppard) on the main stage and the bluesy stuff in the smaller covered venues, but when the rains, which had been threatening all day, finally came, we found ourselves quite comfortable, thank you, in the Crowbar and the Blues and Roots tent. I caught up with old mate Tim Gaze at the Crowbar just before he led the Fender guitar jam, his first set of the day. We’ve been friends since he joined Tamam Shud as a teenaged guitar prodigy, and I have to say that the virtuoso improves with age. He was on fire from the start, trading riffs with Kevin Borich that took me back to some of the best pub rock gigs of the '70s. Speaking of locals, Tim was later joined on stage by the always-impressive Asa Broomhall and the evergreen Bob Abbot. Asa has played

some killer gigs at the surf festival over the years, and I think he is an under-rated gem, a real crowd-pleaser. And what can you say about Big Bob? As soon as he gets this politics nonsense out of his system, he’ll be set for a killer late-life career on the blues circuit, with that growl of a voice and his excellent mouth harp licks. And why not? Willie Nelson’s still going. And speaking of crowd-pleasers, for our last set before leaving, I finally caught up with a band I’ve been wanting to see for a couple of years now, Mason Rack from the Gold Coast. I’d been warned that they were seriously good, but this energetic trio blew my mind. Think Ash Grunwald and Xavier Rudd on steroids. Mason himself, all tatts and muscles, looks like he might be the bouncer, until he starts playing. Apart from the fact that their musicianship is superb (they play musical chairs and swap instruments mid-set, don’t see that too often) these guys put the fun back in the blues. I never wanted their hour-long set to end. Vale Emma Freeman Sad news last week with the passing of Emma Freeman at 93. A true-blue Noosan whose family were local pioneers, she was a wonderfully strong-spirited lady whose talents extended to writing, painting and fierce activism on behalf of her beloved environment. When we had our surf decor and memorabilia shop in the Junction, Emma used to drop by with copies of her Hastings Street book for us to sell on consignment. I remember the first time she came in with her books, she browsed through the memorabilia and said, “I feel quite at home here, being a piece of Noosa memorabilia myself.” She certainly was. A public celebration of her life will be held at the Noosa Leisure Centre, Noosaville, on 19 September, 1-5pm. A night at the theatre for Molly I’ve just booked my tickets for “Quartet” at the Noosa Arts Theatre on 16 September, and suggest you do the same. I know there are a lot of festivals and great ticketed events at this time of year, but this is a great value ($37) night for a wonderful cause, Molly’s Song, which supports the Dementia Research Foundation. If you’ve been meaning to grab tickets for Sir Ronald Harwood’s comedy of manners and keep forgetting, then maybe that’s another good reason to come along and support the foundation. Burgers with a twist AS THE weather heats up we come out of hibernation, crank up the barbie and invite around our long-lost friends for an afternoon of meat and cold drinks. Impress your friends this summer season with delicious burgers that are also good for you. It all comes down to the patties and salad you put between the bread - and the best part is, your friends won’t know they’re eating a healthy burger. Beef and bean burgers (makes four large patties) Ingredients: 500g lean beef mince 1 can four bean mix (available from most grocery stores) 1 egg 1 finely sliced onion Handful of breadcrumbs Salt and pepper 1 teaspoon garlic 1 teaspoon sundried tomato pesto

Method 1. Drain the beans and place in a food processor. Process until the beans become close to a pastelike consistency. 2. In a large mixing bowl, add all the ingredients including the bean paste. Mix it all together with your hands. 3. Using wet hands, scoop out even portions of the mixture and roll into balls. Place on a tray lined with baking paper and pop in the fridge for 30 minutes. 4. Heat the barbecue to medium heat and grill the patties until cooked all the way through. For extra tasty patties, add a slice of low-fat cheese to the top of the patty just before it’s finished cooking. To prepare the burger, lightly toast the buns under a grill, spread the top bun with tomato relish, add lettuce, tomato, cucumber, grated carrot and a slice of red onion then add the patty. Delicious! Note: You can make this same recipe using chicken mince and navy beans. To spice it up, add a touch of curry paste or powder. To keep the meal healthier, serve with baked sweet potato fries instead of potato chips.

For a brew or even two LOCALS and visitors have helped raise over $8000 for local charities all for the love of beer and cider. The inaugural Craft Beer Festival, held at the Noosa Reef Hotel on Saturday 29 August, brought together over 20 brewers and 80 beers and ciders in aid of breast cancer and local charity Sunshine Butterflies. Noosa Reef Hotel venue manager Terence Lunney said the day

was a great success and it was wonderful to see so many people supporting the unique event. “It was an awesome day and a massive result all over,” he said. “Next year will be even bigger and better.” Local police said the crowds were well-behaved and it appeared everyone was having a great day tasting the host of beers and cider on offer throughout the day.

People enjoyed more delicious tastings from more than 20 brewers.

WITH the Nipper season due to start on Sunday 27 September, the Sunshine Beach junior activities annual sign-on day is the best way to find out more about Nippers and what makes this such a great childhood experience. This season, the sign-on day will be held at the Noosa Aquatic Centre on Saturday 5 September from 9am to 3pm. The sign-on day is for both Nippers who are returning to Sunshine Beach as well as those who aren’t currently members that are aged between 6-13 as at 30 September this year. Due to an increase in demand for places at Sunshine Beach Nippers, resources at Sunshine have been boosted

for the upcoming season, therefore allowing the previous cap on membership to be increased. The day is a great way for parents to find out more about Nippers and why Sunshine Beach Nippers is the perfect club for your family. Your child or children will need to complete a swim competency assessment so make sure you bring their togs and goggles. If you are new to the club there is no need to complete a membership form prior to the day, just turn up and all your questions will be answered before any paperwork is required. For those not familiar with Nippers and Sunshine Beach Nippers, Nippers at Sunshine is a about fun, friends, com-

munity and beach safety. Nippers is not a learn to swim program, but a program that helps children learn water safety skills that will be with them whenever they enter the water or in the case of first aid whenever such needs arise. The Sunshine Beach program is a fun and active way to get involved in this iconic Australian summer sport. The Nipper program at Sunshine focuses on engaging all Nippers in activities that will build confidence, both in the water and out of the water, as well as build on solid community and family values. Nippers set for launch

SUCCESS came on Saturday at Caboolture as Noosa Softball Club won one of the three grand finals it contested. The Noosa Men’s side recorded a 8-4 win over the Budgie Smugglers in the final game of the day after strong performances by the 15s and 17s in the earlier matches. The 15s started the day off at 8am with a seesawing game that saw both teams in with a shot to the very end before Demons eventually won 5-4. Noosa chose to field and the teams looked evenly matched finishing the first inning nil-all. The second inning saw four walks, wild pitches and three passed balls with Demons scoring two while Noosa was again out for nil. However Noosa responded keeping Demons from scoring while finding their batting groove with Dylan smacking a three-bagger and Jacob and Brayden joining him on bases. Charles, Shinae and Riley all progressed the runners to get three in and Noosa were up 3-2 after three. Scores levelled out in the fourth while the Demons slammed one to the fence in the fifth and to take the lead again. The Demons were held to nil in the sixth while Shinai made home to equalise the game at four-all. The Demons eventually came home to win 5-4 in a game befitting the quality of the season. The 17s took on the Cavs in what ended up being another thriller. Noosa got off to a flyer with Shinai, Lewis, Bree, and Jarryd - all three baggers and Riley a single - to give them four runs home before the Cavs came back with two. Noosa unfortunately went scoreless in the second while the Cavs posted three to take a 5-4 lead which they extended by one in

Shinai hits out. the third. William took a good fly catch at first and Emma a good catch at second but it wasn’t enough with the Cavs 6-4 after three. Noosa rallied bringing four runs on the back of two walks and a two bagger from Riley before holding the Cavs to one run with Josh taking another catch in the outfield. The fifth dig was a quick affair with Noosa going three up three down as did the Cavs with William getting two outs at first and another assist from the shortstop. A standalone home run got Josh on the board in the sixth taking Noosa to 9 -7 up. However the Cavs brought two home two outs from short at first and a HBB to tie it nine-all. Noosa were scoreless in the final inning with the Cavs getting a runner home to win by just one, 10-9. With two losses from two finals the action switched to the men’s game with six of the players doubling up from the earlier game and one playing their third of the day.

Noosa fielded first and kept Budgie Smugglers one-all after the first innings and 3-1 to Budgies after the second with Josh taking his third catch. By the end of the fourth, which was scoreless, Noosa were up 5-3 but Budgies got one home while Noosa was three up-three down to close the gap at the end of the fifth. With Cody smashed by Carlos in the 6th with an overzealous tag out, tempers were looking frayed, before Noosa steadied the ship and got three runs and Noosa led 8-4 going into the seventh. Karma is funny as Carlos tripped on the first baseman’s leg and ended up face down in the dirt, he got a base and everyone was smiling, he got to three and then head butted the ball when a play was on and was given out interference, a flick from Lewis to Coady saw the third out and Noosa won 8-4. Well done to the Noosa teams on a great year and we will see you soon on the home paddock for summer season.

Rain flushes out fish By JACK MANGROVE A BIT of rain is the best thing to happen to the Noosa River. With the start of spring a bit of rain has started to fall. Rain and the run off that it creates is a good thing for the river as in brings added nutrients to the river which small bait fish feed on and in turn bigger fish fed on the bait fish. Hopefully we won’t get too much as this will change the salinity level in the river and the bait will head out to sea. Upriver between the lakes mangrove jack have started to feed with a little more aggression. The change in water temperature over the past couple of weeks has also helped to improve the jack fishing. Suspending lures cast close to the structure that lines the sides of the river is a great way to target these fish. Live baits and fresh bait worked around the rocky drop off in the same area should also prove fruitful. Down towards the ski runs flathead have been on the chew with brighter coloured soft plastics doing the job. Woods Bays have again provided anglers with a great deal of diversity with all trevally, tailor, flathead jacks and large bream all

on the chew. Out toward the mouth Dog Beach has seen some quality whiting flathead and bream. The offshore anglers were out in force last weekend with some outstanding results for the smaller boats. Halls, Sunshine and Jew Sholes gave up some quality fish, cobia jew and snapper all where accounted for. North Reef saw some outstanding tuna with some extremely large fish estimated at more than 30 kilograms. There has been a lot in press over the last week about the large schools of bait that have been moving up the coast this is most likely the reason for the tuna in the area. North Reef also accounted for some quality reef fish including snapper, pearl perch, and spangled emperor. Out toward the banks quality snapper and larger pearl perch as well as cobia and gold ban snapper were all taken. On the beach, tailor are still on the chew. Some of the school are a little small but quality is good with tailor to 50 centimetres not uncommon and dart bream and whiting are also inhabiting the same gutters. Fresh mullet, pilchards, worms and pippies have all claimed their fair share of fish.

NOOSA croquet is celebrating after some big wins over Caloundra. Noosa has two teams in the golf format pennant race (A and B) this season and both enjoyed good wins in the most recent round of pennants. Noosa A played Caloundra A at Caloundra defeating the home side seven-three, with Sally Stopps winning both singles (7-1 and 7-5) as did Sheridan Stopps who won both of his singles (6-2 and 7-4) and Niven Gugich (7-3 and 7-5). Colin Hindson won one game (5-4) and John Brock lost one game (5-7). The two doubles matches were both taken by Caloundra (10-4 and 10-9) however the net was seven-three to Noosa with a sizable hoops advantage. Noosa B played Caloundra B at Noosa with home side also recording a win (seven matches, 62 hoops ) versus Caloundra (three matches, 43 hoops). Pennant play was handicapped with bisque advantages going to poorer performing players. Despite this, Stewart McConnell won two singles and his doubles, John Olsen won his singles and his doubles, pairing with Stewart. Brian Rudd won his two singles. Margaret Shipley, playing her first singles pennant match, enjoyed a win. The McConnell/Olsen doubles match was won by Noosa. Noosa prevailed despite giving their opponents nine extra turns.

Support springs in THE Cindy Mackenzie Breast Cancer Foundation has again benefitted from the annual Peregian Springs Ladies Golf Invitational. For the second year in a row, the ladies golf event supported the foundation and it was also the seventh time it has supported a local charity. The event raised $750 for the foundation which is dedicated to making a difference to local families living with breast cancer on the Sunshine Coast. Lady captain Janet Young said the event was growing with 112 women from 12 clubs from throughout the region teeing up this year in their best pink golf attire to help aid local

families who are struggling with the impacts of breast cancer on the Sunshine Coast. “We could not have hosted this event without the support of Peregian Springs Golf Club management and our generous sponsors who included major sponsor Vanity Fairways and other sponsors Ian Barnes, Louenhide, Mahali Living, Pedimol and ZigZag bags and Ikatan Spa,” Janet said. The ladies enjoyed a luncheon and fashion parade in the clubhouse which was festooned in pink following the golf event. “We are already planning the 2016 event with great enthusiasm,” Janet added.

Classy Cassie’s on a winning streak FRESH from her impressive age group win at the World Junior Olympic Golf Championship in California, 12-yearold Cassie Porter outclassed the field to win the Peregian Springs Ladies Club Championship at the weekend. Cassie defeated Shania Herzog Smith to take out the title and never really looked in trouble throughout the match play final. Her consistent, confident style confounded her opponents, many of whom are experienced, seasoned golfers,

used to the pressure of club championship conditions. In the men’s final, experience did matter with Steve Weir taking out the Men’s title from 18-year-old Hunter Eccleston. Hunter’s younger brother Cooper Eccleston won the Club Junior Championship. Cassie’s next goal is the IMG Invitational junior golf event in Sarasota, Florida, in December. Dolphins through the loop By JOE JURISEVIC THE Noosa Dolphins Rugby Union Under 8 Reds has ended its season on a high note defeating St Andrews Blue 50-15. The weekend round of matches was the final of the year for the young age groups with the older teams going on to finals football over the next two weeks. Although the Under 8s game began evenly the Reds turned on the muscle and took the game to another level. Tries came from Oscar, Atticus, Harry, Will and Tom but most pleasingly they came from hard work by the whole team. With Ollie and Brandon finding ball, movement began at the break down. Will continually won the ball through the centre, Oscar scrapped and ran the wide-open plains while Harry put the opposition on notice with strong runs to the corners. Clancy continues to provide fearless runs up the middle and always seem to make the advantage line. But St Andrews refused to give up working the Dolphins hard. Tom broke free and found himself in space to score and Hamish gave a Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match performance with plenty of grunt at the break downs, shared with Klay who ran cover, hit ups and dived into the break down. Jamie made himself a nuisance to the opposition by tackling and ripping ball. Charlie got the other solo award for his efforts while Atticus drove hard over the ball in the breakdown. The team has developed well, plays with composure and is generally a good bunch to be with. It was a really great effort by coach Bryan who continually adjusted the training to extract the best from the boys. WEDNESDAY Ladies Bowls was enjoyed by all in the sunny weather. Winners of the day were Jocelyn, Linda and Jeannie for a “pick of the box”. Thursday was Handicap singles and the 14 players on the green were all keen to win the prizes. IF THERE is any surf lifesaving club in Australia that is in danger of running out of Champagne, it would have to be Sunshine Beach. On Saturday night at the Queensland Surf Life Saving Awards of Excellence Black Tie Dinner, held in Brisbane, Warrick Redwood received the major award when he was named Queensland’s Volunteer of the Year. This award covers all aspects of club work, and as such is a true indication that the recipient is in every sense of the word a full-on dedicated clubman; add to this also his work as member of the after-hours Operations Support Group. This is just the start, for as the winner of this award, his name will now go to Life Saving Australia in Sydney where he will contest the National Australian Volunteer of the Year. We wish him well. However, this was not the only award for Sunshine. Later in the evening, Warrick's wife, Johanna, was named as the Queensland Rookie Coach of the Year. This is said by many officials to be the first time that a husband and wife have taken out two major awards at state level. “For me it has been very humbling-but also very rewarding. Coaching is all about kids; and the support from the parents has been outstanding,” Johanna said. Regarding his award Warrick said, “I was not expecting it. However, when you get recognition for doing something you enjoy, that makes it all the better.” Add to the list of achievers for Sunshine, club captain Scott Summers. Despite not winning the gold medal in the Club Captain category, Scott came home with silver; after only five years in the movement, this is an outstanding achievement and says a lot for his capabilities as a leader. This follows on to his award as the Branch Captain of the year. Club president Craig Law summed it up well when he said, “These awards have really capped off an outstanding year for us and I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all winners. Also thanks to all who have supported us throughout the year.” For Noosa it was also a successful evening, for they were named as the recipient of the very coveted Tess Crammond Medal for Life Saving Excellence: Outstanding Resuscitation and Rescue. This was in recognition of the work done by a team of eight members on Noosa's Main

Beach. At 6am Thursday 23 April, a man was found, on the water's edge unconscious with no sign of life. After an incredible 40 minutes of resuscitation and defib work by the lifesavers and paramedics he was transported to Nambour Hospital where he made a full recovery. This is what lifesaving is all about; teamwork, resuscitation and a cool head. This week is definitely a big one for lifesaving on the Sunshine Coast. Starting at 8am this morning 3 September on Maroochydore Beach, the starters’ gun will herald the start of the International Surf Rescue Challenge; a 3 Surf Test Series that will be contested by teams of lifesavers representing Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the USA. All four countries will have teams competing in the open events with Australia and the New Zealand fielding teams in the Youth Categories. We are proud to say that the Noosa Club will have two members competing. Jordan Mercer will compete for Australian in the open section and a new member Grace Kaihau, because of her parentage, will be representing New Zealand in the youth. Good luck to both. Patron’s Day a roaring success By ANNETTE ADSETT NOBU and Yukiko have taken out this year’s Patron’s Day at Coolum Tennis club at the weekend. Patron’s Day had fewer teams than in the past, but the lack of numbers was made up by the enthusiasm and enjoyment of the players. Twenty players played five rounds of 25 minutes to accumulate points. Nobu and Yukiko were each presented with a trophy and their names will go on the perpetual trophy. Brian won the raffle and even though he was the lowest point scorer, he played great rallies and supported his partners. With perfect weather, Patron’s Day was very successful. As well as the tennis, Steve Robinson attended for an official opening of the meeting room.

County cricketer to train aspiring players GLOUCESTERSHIRE County wicket-keeper batsman and England development player Patrick Grieshaber has joined Tewantin Noosa Cricket Club for the upcoming season. Patrick, 18, from Bath in England, has just finished school and is on his first trip to Australia. Playing cricket since he was seven, he has been part of Gloucestershire’s academy since he was 13. The talented young gloveman has made a number of second eleven appearances for Gloucestershire since his debut at 15 and played his first First Class game last summer. He has also represented England Development in Under 17s.

As well as training and playing with the Thunder first grade team, Patrick will take a coaching role with the Tewantin Noosa junior players. “Being 18 years old, I’m pretty fresh out of the junior set-up myself, so hopefully I can use that to create a good atmosphere” Patrick said. “I had some great experiences as a young player, including being mentored by ex-England wicket-keeper Jack Russell and training with Muralitharan and Brad Haddin. “Hopefully, I can pass on some tips from these legends to the younger players at Tewantin. “For me, if I can help the juniors improve and develop as young cricketers

and bring them a little bit of success as well, then I’ll feel like I’ve done a good job”. Patrick said he was looking forward to being away from his home environment and learning about himself as a person as well as a cricketer. He is also hoping to see some of Australia when he is not busy coaching or playing. Training for the local junior cricket season begins this week with the opening round of the competition being played on the last weekend of the September school holidays. By RON LANE AS HE stepped out of the ring at Acacia Ridge in Brisbane, Bryce Hegerty had, for two reasons, a big smile on his face. The first was that it was his 21st birthday and the second, and probably the most important, he had just won the Australian Golden Gloves, boxing in the 75 kg division. Boxing as an amateur, Bryce has had a total of 54 fights and with his experience and two Golden Glove titles to his name he will, on 15 October, fly to Germany as a member of the Australian Amateur Boxing Team to fight some of Europe's best. Bryce is trained by Israel Kani at the Noosa Box Office Gymnasium and as such is in good hands. As a professional fighter, Kani held both the Australian and Queensland titles, and this record, plus a good solid approach, ensures that Bryce will be properly managed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There was a period when he

boxed constantly over four years and only suffered one defeat. After that time he went up a division and he lost a couple - he just needed the time to adjust. Now he is boxing really good and anything is possible,â&#x20AC;? said Kani. On 24 October he will return from Germany and then on 29 October he flies to New Zealand to compete in his other passion of Mountain Running. This will take place at Mt Edgecombe and this International Mountain event will be sure to test him to the fullest. "Bryce has run in several King of the Mountain races in Pomona and on one occasion he even fought in a tournament the night before,â&#x20AC;? said Kani. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Anyway, the running sure keeps him fit.â&#x20AC;? When not boxing or mountain running he works as a personal trainer in the NBO gym. A complete life, in the world of sport.

ON 23 August, the Tewantin Tennis Club (TTC) held their annual general meeting (AGM) with a large number of members present. The committee members remain the same as last year except for the junior coordinator position, which was not filled. The club championships, sponsored by Bendigo Bank, have been played over three weekends in August with close results in some grades. TTC offers social tennis every week day at scheduled times as well as Thursday nights and the Whack on Wednesday games played mid-morning and organised by the coach, Daniel Carroll. A MJDS junior tournament was granted to TTC and held the last weekend in August and the annual seniors tournament will be on 18 and 21 September.

Lions’ eleventh big dance By BRIAN STOCKWELL OVER 35 Noosa Lions have defeated Coolum to book their eleventh soccer grand final appearance in a row. The minor premiers outplayed the second-placed Coolum side to take the game 4-1. Noosa’s finals hopes got off to a good start on Friday night, with two wins in the first versus second playoffs including the Over 35 men. Not to be out-done, the most youthful of Noosa’s senior sides, the Coastal Women Blue team, handed premiers Cooroora their second defeat of the season in their semi-final clash. A cross from Ellie Jones to striker Danielle Bishop-Kinlyside saw Noosa score the only goal of the game. Coach Ben Amson described stand-in goalie Renay Clarke’s efforts as one of the best he had seen in women’s soccer, after the team defended repeated onslaughts from the determined Cooroora side. The good times kept on rolling on Saturday with the Noosa U14 division one side coming up against their opponents Maroochydore in the last two grand finals. After early scoring to both sides,

narrow losses. The weather in Caboolture for the Premier Reserves and Premier Men’s semi-finals was atrocious with constant rain, conditions were slippery, but good drainage meant the games went on.

The Reserves went down 2-1, seeing an end to what has otherwise been a good season for this team which blends some old hands with some fresh new talent. Despite the conditions, the Premier Men’s clash with Maroochydore saw some spectacular goals. Unfortunately for the Lions fans, the first three of these were to Maroochydore. However, Noosa’s first goal was quickly followed by an opportunity from the penalty spot which inexplicably sailed over the top of the nets. The mood in the Noosa supporters’ camp at this stage was as bleak as the weather, but on the field not even a fourth goal to Maroochy could dampen the players’ spirits. In what is the best comeback for several seasons, Noosa brought two additional strikers on to chase the target down. The Noosa crowd found their voice at 4-3 and young and old alike went in to raptures when with five minutes to go they drew level. With three minutes to go, Paul Arnison slotted his second long range shot into the back of the net to seal the victory and the chance to play in the major semi next weekend.
