A FLU outbreak has drained Geelong’s blood supplies, prompting the city’s donor centre to enlist a surprise recruit in a new campaign for donations.

The Cookie Monster appeared at the centre this week as the Australian Red Cross Blood Service urged donors to “crumb on down�.

The service needs 1026 extra appointments as a late peak in the flu season caused a spike in donor cancellations.

As well as the satisfaction of supporting a vital service, donors would also earn the reward of a biscuit and cup of tea afterward, said blood service spokesperson Stephanie Reynolds. “We’re challenging Geelong people to crumb on down and give blood at this time of need,� she said. “After saving lives they can then enjoy a cup of tea or coffee while munching on Australia’s best biscuit. We believe it’s the best biscuit because it’s the only one that saves lives. “Right now we still need 1026 biscuit-loving donors to roll up their sleeves and help us overcome this cold and flu problem. Every donation helps to save three lives, including the lives of cancer patients, road trauma victims, people with blood disorders, unborn babies, and mothers during childbirth.�

Agent bails on clients

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A REAL estate agency connected with a Torquay woman facing up to 1200 fraud charges has closed, leaving clients in limbo.

St George Real Estate’s office at 194 Pakington St, Geelong West, is now occupied by a builder unconnected to the agency.

The officer in effective control of the agency was Kaylene Maree Hussen, who also worked

‘Casino-lover’ was on 1200 fraud charges as a tax agent.

The Independent reported in July that Mrs Hussen faced tax fraud charges totalling as much as $2 million and involving up to 200 clients.

Police told Geelong Magistrates Court in an earlier hearing that records obtained from Crown Casino showed that she and her

husband lost more than $1 million at the casino since 2002.

A spokewoman said Consumer Affairs Victoria was making enquiries into the closure of the business. “Any consumers who have suffered financial loss in tenancy, or property sales may be eligible to make claims on the Victorian

Property Fund,� she said. “For more information on making claims, consumers should visit CAV’s website at consumer. vic.gov.au. “Landlords and tenants who are unable to contact the estate agent should consider contacting each other immediately to make alternative arrangements

for payment of rent. Vendors and purchasers should consider contacting their solicitors or conveyancers.�

Business Licensing Authority records showed that Mrs Hussen was the licensed officer of Newport Petroleum Pty Ltd, trading as St George Real Estate.

The records also showed that

William John Hussen was previously involved in Just Property Management Pty Ltd but was permanently disqualified from holding an estate agents licence following Consumer Affairs Victoria action in May 2010.

Mr Hussen was declared ineligible to hold a licence for seven years and ineligible to act as an agent’s representative for five.

Maybe Jeff should just wait 15 months to let ratepayers decide. The democratic process of elections could effectively sack the councillors for him.

AFTER all the State Government fanfare heralding its brand new $20 million brand, the old logo is still in use.

A media release from the three Geelong state Labor MPs this week proudly bore the old logo with its Southern Cross motif.

Maybe the Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s printing office is using up old supplies to save a few bucks, although this media release was emailed, so that excuse doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite hold water.

AND THE Government must have been rapt to see Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s council showing some rare unity this week.

After all, the council has been under plenty of fire recently for perceived disunity, which can be also described as disagreement.

But at least this week all hands around the council table raised in agreement on a motion put to the vote - to deny the Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s demand to hand over $1.5 million a year for its new trust to run Simonds Stadium.

GEELONGâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S council will tell State Government no money is left in the kitty to provide ongoing funding for a new trust taking over management of Simonds Stadium.

Councillors voted unanimously this week in favour of Geelong Football Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s request for a $6 million contribution toward an $89 million stage-four redevelopment of the stadium.

But they baulked at the governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s demand for an additional $1.5 million a year to fund the Kardinia Park Trust.

Cr Ed Kontelj, the driving force behind tying the funding recommendation to rejecting the trust funding call, said the kitty was empty. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no more money.

Where do they think weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to get additional funds from? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re no longer owning or managing the stadium and the public would not stand for it.â&#x20AC;?

Cr Kontelj, who holds a finance portfolio, said the $1.5 million demand had â&#x20AC;&#x153;come out of the blueâ&#x20AC;?. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think, financially, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done all we can. I am supportive

of the trust but you just have to listen to the people in the streets - we have commitments to roads and footpaths and we do not want to shackle residents with any further imposts that we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This needs to go ahead now; weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re expecting a positive outcome for the community.â&#x20AC;?

Cr Kontelj believed that the Cats were comfortable with councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proposal but the Government had until the end of the year to respond.

Mayor Darryn Lyons said the stadium was already world-class and stage four would further raise its standard.

Stage four would help the stadium attract more AFL games, worth $3 million each to the city, as well as T20 cricket, rugby, Aleague and W-league soccer.

HOLISTIC Food waste unit trial ‘could manufacture new jobs’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AN AUSTRALIAN-first composting trial could win Geelong new manufacturing business, according to Mayor Darryn Lyons.

The trial uses an oveseas-made composting unit to convert household food waste into nutrient-rich soil conditioner in 24 hours.

Geelong could make the units for other municipalities if the trial was successful, Cr Lyons said.

Food waste and compostable material was a big problem because

it comprised almost 60 per cent of household garbage ending up in landfill, he said.

“This trial is a call to action to see if Geelong residents are ready to turn their food waste into usable soil conditioner for the garden and to see if the technology is user-friendly and suits our lifestyles.”

Future Proofing Geelong Ambassador, keen environmentalist and Cats star Tom Lonergan was excited about the trial.

“We’re pleased to be able to take

part in this trial to keep our food waste out of landfill and turning into methane gas,” he said.

“We’re pretty conscious of not wasting food but we still find enough to feed it everyday. It really makes you think about the amount of food waste that ends up in your rubbish bin every week.”

Council environment portfolio holder Andy Richards said Geelong residents interested in participating could take advantage of a subsidy available for the trial.

“Each unit reduces associated food waste emissions by around 46 per cent, so every person that signs up is making a significant impact on greenhouse gases in Geelong.”

Each unit can process up to 4kg of food waste daily, except large bones, oyster shells, oils and fats. The conditioner is then mixed with soil for use on gardens and in pot plants.

THE HIGH rate of local love cheats, uncovered when an international website for adultery was hacked, has came as no surprise to a Geelong expert in couple counselling.

Colleen Morris said the prolific number of online dating sites made it easier for individuals to stray.

The suburbs of Geelong and Newtown had top billing locally on the hacked Ashley Madison account with 68 signed-up members of the adulterous club - the third highest in the state.

Ms Morris, a counsellor with Watersedge, said sexual activity outside a relationship was one of the major is-

sues when she was involved in couple counselling sessions.

In-your-face online advertising attracted clients to dating websites and they then became hooked, she said.

“There’s a lot of sexual online interaction.”

Nationmaster’s database of Ashley Madison love rats revealed plenty of interaction across the region, with Geelong and Newtown’s 3220 postcode heading the list.

Ms Brudenell said for part of the shoot the crew stripped to their underwear to create a morecomfortable environment for the four exposing what they considered to be their defining flaws.

“I felt uncomfortable standing there in my underwear and I

learned something about myself.

You understand that everybody has insecurity.

“It was amazing because they said that going through the process of making the film actually lifted a burden from their shoulders.”

Ms Brudenell, studying a Bachelor of Film and TV at JMC Academy, pressed classmate Sarah Beardmoore and film maker Corey Dawson into service to make the entirely volunteer production.

Geelong feature film director Kelly Dolen mentored and supervised the one-day shoot at a Grovedale studio.

The documentary is in post-production and will be released on social media using the #nowyouseeme.

“My vision is for it to go viral on social media and hope that many more people find the courage to speak out about their own issue,” Ms Brudenell said.

Not only did they pose for the photo, they all appear in a documentary, made by film student Kassandra Brudenell (centre) on the issue of body image and selfesteem.

Each of the four - Dan Heubel, Suse Korzendorfer, Lisa Mitrov and Lachlan Excell - have a reason for hiding in the background, avoiding going out in public or keeping their secret from even their closest friends.

GEELONG’S Liberal and Labor MPs have accused each other of deceiving commuters over a series of public transport forums.

State Liberal Andrew Katos and federal conterpart Sarah Henderson hosted the first forum at Grovedale on Tuesday but three state Labor MPs labelled it a “political stunt” and said the event might confuse commuters about which forums were “official” or “unofficial”.

Christine Couzens, John Eren and Lisa Neville said the Liberal forum was hastily organised after the Andrews Labor Government announced “comprehensive community engagement” on Victoria’s first Regional Network Development Plan (RNDP).

The Labor MPs said they were concerned people would believe Tuesday’s event was an official forum that would contribute to improving train and coach services for Geelong.

“In reality, the forum is a political stunt by the state Liberal party, who did nothing for public transport in Geelong in four years in government, and the Abbott Liberal government, who has an ideological opposition to funding urban rail,” the MPs said in a statement.

They called on Mr Katos and Ms Henderson to “get on board” the Regional Network Development Plan.

The Labor MPs said their “official” community forum as part of the RNDP would be at Geelong West Town Hall from 7pm on 10 September.

But Mr Katos, Member for South Barwon, said the Labor MPs’ forum had nothing to do with the timetabling issues that had commuters up in arms.

“This so-called official forum is about a long-term transport plan for the entire Barwon south-west region from Geelong to Warrnambool and Portland,” he said.

“If the Andrews Government had done its consulting right in the first place our forum wouldn’t have been necessary.

“We had more than 100 people come out on a cold night, from as far away as Lara, to Grovedale to discuss the numerous problems with the bus and rail timetable. The consensus was that people wanted a return to the old timetable.

“It seems clear that what we need is a combination of the old and new timetables, which will require a greater investment in public transport.”

Mr Katos said feedback from the forum would be collated and presented to Transport Minister Jacinta Allan.

The Liberals would host a second forum at Manifold Heights Baptist Church hall from 7pm on 8 September.

A UNIQUE Geelong book project combining the wisdom of the old and the enthusiasm of the young has become a sell-out.

The book, called William Wiggle Will Not Sit Still, was written by residents of Belmont Grange aged care facility and Breakwater Preschool children were the illustrators.

Belmont Grange lifestyle coordinator Liz Toffoli said the successful project generated “amazing” results.

“Quite a few of the residents were resistant at first because they said they had never done anything like it before,” Ms Toffoli said.

“We ran a story construction workshop with award-winning children’s author Lee Fox and then worked on characters, scenarios, sentence construction and fleshed out the story.

“By the third workshop their confidence just built. They just couldn’t believe what they were achieving together.

“It has been wonderful seeing people taking ownership and pride in the parts of the book they helped create.

“They got so much joy from having the kids around and the kids were delighted about the whole project.”

Ms Toffoili said the project had strengthened community connections between the aged care facility and the preschool.

Another print run had been ordered after the first 130 books virtually sold out, she said.

The project had inspired both old and young so much that a sequel was on the cards, Ms Toffoli said.

“The residents have been tackling other literary projects now and they are keen to keep writing about the escapades of William Wiggle.”

They believe that the city should drive its own digital destiny because the NBN could still be years away.

sityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s IT department, NBNOptions.orgâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Todd Hubers and BITC founder Geoff Crowl have combined to rally Geelong businesses for improved broadband connectivity.

Mr Hubers said Geelong was in broadband limbo while it awaited the NBN but telcos were failing to upgrade infrastructure in the meantime. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many in business circles have

been talking about their own need for some time. Now is the time to be heard,â&#x20AC;? Mr Hubers said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With our combined voices weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have the market power to organise a great solution for the region.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Hubers said unused broadband resources in the city could help local businesses improve productivity.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are unused fibre assets in the ground already and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s possible to leverage and extend the exiting wi-fi network,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are lots of other technologies on the horizon and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no reason why such a solution couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be implemented as a municipal ISP.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Hubers said the first step was to assess the level of demand, particularly from businesses in

central Geelong. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We hear businesses saying privately that they have connection speed problems, particularly upload speed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I certainly need improved speeds for my own business, Start-up Cloud, but unless you rally those voices together and join together nothing will get done.â&#x20AC;?

Cabbie dies WorkSafe visits as trawler moves to Pt Henry â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;for savingsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; A CORIO woman has died almost a month after suffering injuries in a car crash.

Police confirmed that the 63-yearold taxi driver died in hospital on Saturday.

The fatality followed a two-car collision at the intersection of Latrobe Tce and McKillop St on 24 July.

Police believed the other car was travelling south on Latrobe Tce when it collided with the taxi as it turned right from McKillop St. Two males, including the driver, in the first vehicle were uninjured but a female passenger suffered minor injuries. A female passenger in the taxi also suffered minor injuries.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The Geelong Star made national news when it killed dolphins during its first fishing operation. The shipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dolphin-kill tally now stands at nine, with several seals also killed.

Geelong harbourmaster Dilip Abraham confirmed that the factory freezer ship had moved berths for repairs.

It is now a close neighbour to another ship that is under the microscope of bay watchers.

The Queen of Melbourne has been in the bay for about four months with no indication when she will leave.

The former Norwegian ferry was brought to Australia with the intention of making it a party boat.

However, she has failed to secure a permanent berth and has been allowed to stay in local waters as long as it does not interfere with shipping.

Environmentalists and recreational anglers have slammed the use of the ship, which began trawling operations in Australian waters earlier this year after arriving from overseas.

THIRTEEN new child protection workers will arrive in Geelong to cover a “shortfall” in support services for vulnerable children and families, State Government has announced.

The extra help would include a specialist child protection practitioner to support family violence victims, the Government said.

The increase in staffing would also improve childprotection response times, said Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos.

The extra staff were part of a recruitment drive to hire more than 110 new child protection workers across the state, she said.

Op shop finds denim’s value

DENIM never goes out of fashion - that’s the opinion of the Vinnies Grovedale op shop staff, and they are sticking to it.

The entire staff - most of them volunteers - will be dressed head to toe in their finest denim on 4 September for the op shop’s Denim Day. Store manager Maree Cooper said the nine month old outlet did carry a good stock of pre-loved denim.

“It’s always quite versatile and you can dress it up or down,” Ms Cooper said.

“Whether its jean, shirts, shoes, hats or even ties, we are

reinventing denim. We will all be in our wildest, craziest denim and invite out customers to join us.”

Ms Cooper said the oddest piece of denim she had seen was a pair a men’s denim shorts handpainted with various flags from around the world.

“I thought I’d just put $5 on it because the demand for it might be a bit small. But it was out the door within 10 minutes,” she laughed.

“The guy who bought them thought it was the greatest thing he’d seen.”

Denim bean bags, cushions and even furniture have all made their way through the shop at various times, Ms Cooper said.

Donations of denim items were always welcome, she said.

Vinnies Grovedale was a “concept” store, the first of a new breed of op shops, Ms Cooper said.

The other Vinnnies op shops in Geelong would receive a similar make-over, creating a “bright, clean, modern and airy” shopping environment.

Denim Day will wrap up national op shop week but Ms Cooper and her 65 volunteers have already been adding a denim theme to their outfits for a couple of weeks.

“We love it - any opportunity to dress up.”

Students nail a glueless design

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AN ENGINEERING challenge creating a school classroom for up to 25 pupils without using nails, glue or tape was presented to local secondary students this week.

The design challenge was one of three facing the humanitarian sector set for 20 Year 10 students from Sacred Heart College, Clonard College and St Joseph’s College.

The students took over Deakin University’s Centre for Advanced Design and Engineering Technology (CADET) to tackle the conundrum.

The students utilised CADET’s state-of-the-art facilities such as 3D printers, laser cutters, robotics and a virtual reality laboratory.

The other challenges included creating a recyclable flat-pack cardboard bed for homeless people and those caught in disaster areas.

The bed needed to be lightweight, self-contained, and easy to transport.

Another challenge was creating a flat-pack shelter to replace temporary tents used in humanitarian aid and refugee camps around the world.

The pop-up school challenge had to be placed into disaster zones to get children back to school - and into a normal comforting routine - quickly.

The school must hold at least 25 people, be modular in design to allow for extensions, and able to be quickly and easily erected.

CADET program manager Jason Steinweidel said the parame-

ters for each assignment were deliberately broad in order to push students’ creativity to the limit.

“The real challenge for students is to combine a great idea with the right materials and the right technology to turn the idea into a reality,” he said.

“The exercise is not about solving problems but helping the next generation of engineers to understand what they can achieve.

“Engineering is about so much more than building a bridge. It’s all about clever design and design is central to solving problems in the world today and into the future.

“Here at CADET, we’re incubating the next generation of designers who will go on to form organisations and start-up companies that we can barely imagine today.”

A DRYSDALE woman says she is in disbelief after being told she won $1 million in Monday’s Tattslotto draw.

The woman bought the winning ticket at Drysdale Lotto shop, a store with a trick of recent big wins.

“This is just like a dream!” the stunned winner said.

“My husband asked me last night if I’d checked my Monday Lotto entry. When I did I turned

Letters Cats supported kids’ footy I WRITE to correct a letter from Sam Scott, published in last week’s Independent, regarding the National Schools Football Championships in Geelong.

The Geelong Cats supported this event in many ways. Suggesting the club shunned the event is incorrect and damaging to our club.

The Geelong Cats worked closely with the organisers from School Sport Australia Combined Football Championships 2015 and AFL Barwon to host a two-hour leadership forum for approximately 400 young footballers and support staff and coaches.

The club was represented at the event by 10 players and also had senior management and coaching staff in attendance.

AFL Barwon arranged a photographer for photo opportunities with players at the event.

During the week senior players went to three local hosting clubs. VFL coach Paul Hood attended a dinner arranged during the week.

Our club has an ongoing serious commitment to the community. Our players make close to 1000 community appearances a year.

The Deakin Cats community centre has hosted over 37,000 people since opening mid-2013. The club has an extensive community development program focusing on young people, working with key partners to empower themto make good choices.

The club has created long-term partnerships to deliver proactive programs that benefit young people and their health.

To suggest the club failed to support the National Schools Football Championships was ill-founded and unfair.

Church supports freedom JUDITH Brooks (Letters, 21 August) described the church as intolerant, and practicing “often-cruel restrictions and abuse” before dispatching the dead on “bleak journeys toward the judgement to come”.

Rain on denier’s parade ALAN Barron (Letters, 21 August) presented climate science nonsense from conspiracy websites as fact then called for a royal commission into our “august bodies” of science because, obviously if they don’t understand it, they must be in on it. Or maybe these august bodies just know their job. After all, the role of water vapour and CO2 in the greenhouse effect has been well understood for over 120 years.

Here’s how it works: water vapour is indeed a strong greenhouse gas and is responsible for about two thirds of greenhouse warming but the atmosphere can only hold so much water vapour at any given temperature before it comes out again as rain.

Not so with CO2. The atmosphere will take as much CO2 as we care to put into it and it will raise the temperature. But here’s the thing: the raised temperature will allow the atmosphere to hold more water vapour than before, causing more temperature rise. So water vapour magnifies temperature changes caused by CO2.

While he is dazzling readers with his figures Mr Barron omits this simple feedback mechanism.

But, then, that is the denier model.

I predict a racket TIM FLANNERY, renowned mammalogist, is much-loved by the warmist brethren and was mentioned in the Independent last week.

Here are some of his climate predictions: • 2004, “I think there is a fair chance Perth will be the 21st Century’s first ghost metropolis”; • 2005, “Perth is facing the possibility of a catastrophic failure of the city’s water supply”; and • 2007, “So even the rain that falls isn’t actually going to fill our dams and our river systems and that’s a real worry for the people in the bush”.

These types of baseless catastrophic predictions created panic among politicians during the drought and desalination plants were built in: Wonthaggi, Victoria, for over $6 billion but never used; Adelaide, $2.2 billion, mothballed; Gold Coast, $1.2 billion, mothballed; and Sydney, $2 billion, turned off in mid-2012.

Apart from the build cost, these plants cost hundreds of millions of dollars a year for long-term contracts and maintenance but are rusting away rapidly.

Victorians in particular will have to pay $18 billion for their desalination plant by 2040 and that’s assuming no water is used. If the plant’s water is used the costs increase dramatically.

Recognise all victims DOMESTIC abuse in Australia is growing at an alarming rate, awareness of which is being raised.

Many forms of support are available to women and children who are victims, although much more is needed.

However, there is a misconception that domestic abuse is a one-way street, with women and children the victims and males the only perpetrators. Recent statistics and research indicate that males represent almost one-third of domestic abuse victims.

It’s time to recognise the equality of this issue and provide support to all who have suffered from domestic abuse, regardless of gender, race or religious beliefs.

If we as a society want to eradicate this problem then a holistic approach acknowledging equality is required.

Jimmy’s having a hoot

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN LANDING a job on the popular ABC Kids program Giggle and Hoot was ideal for Jimmy Rees.

That seems to be how he gets through life: by having a giggle at what a hoot it is to do the five-nightsa-week show.

But he gets an even bigger hoot out of the opportunity to take the television characters live on stage in a second Live Nation tour, this time taking in Geelong.

Rees still smiles at his good fortune in scoring the role in his first audition - although things were not quite straightforward, as with all the good audition stories.

“The ABC held an open casting call seeking fresh talent,” Rees recalled.

“I did a video audition and was shortlisted for the Melbourne call from 5500 videos submitted. I actually got to the second round but missed out on the third.

“Coincidentally, the Giggle and Hoot production office was looking for someone to play the Jimmy Giggle character.

“The ABC3 for kids channel was launching at the time. My video was passed along and I landed the job.”

Rees was grateful for the opportunity, with no formal training other than drama studies at school and some amateur theatre.

“It’s great, I’m just prancing about in my PJs all day,” Rees laughed.

“The kids are great - they’re always the first to let you know what they think.

His show, Giggle and Hoot and Friends, is a 55-minute stage spectacular with everyone’s favourite songs, dancing, fun and laughter.

Joining Jimmy Giggle and the owls onstage is the ever popular Bananas in Pyjamas, B1 and B2, now in their 22nd year.

Giggle and Hoot and Friends plays Geelong Performing Arts Centre at 11am, 1.30pm and 4pm on 11 October.

Life and death inspires songs

By PAUL MILLAR SCOTTISH performer Isla Grant tapped into personal tragedy, using it as an inspiration to revive her career after a near fatal car accident.

The acclaimed singer-songwriter is on a whistle-stop tour of Australia, taking in 21 venues in less than a month, with a onenight show at GPAC on 25 September.

“This is my life, it’s what I do and if I wasn’t doing this I would be at home twiddling my thumbs,” she says with a lilt from the Scottish border.

Music has been constant in her life; her father was a piper and a highlander and her mother could hold a tune while her grandfather was a fiddler.

She served her apprenticeship in the knockabout clubs in England’s north-east where she was told, “if you can work these clubs, you can work anywhere”.

She now works everywhere to meet the demands of a faithful, growing fan base.

But she admits that a car smash brought a sudden halt to her career. She had also recently married her husband Al, who performs with her.

Isla suffered internal injuries and a broken wrist and was told that she would probably nev-

She would wake up crying in the night and couldn’t listen to songs on the radio.

She had time on her hands during her recovery and instead of allowing the memories of the smash to slowly crush her, she wrote down her feelings and put them to music.

“My songs are about life and hopefully we paint a picture through our music,” she said.

“It’s what people like to hear, it’s simplicity and there is a truthfulness in my songs.”

She now performs a more easy listening style, respecting her country and folk backgrounds.

She records with CMR Records in Dublin, who also look after Foster & Allen, and has six albums to her credit. The first three, Only Yesterday, Mother and A Dream Come True achieved double platinum sales.

Maria takes on a diva’s legend CELEBRATED Greek-Australian performer Maria Mercedes takes on the role of a lifetime as legendary Greek-American opera singer Maria Callas in Terrence McNally’s Master Class.

THE current public transport disruptions continue to grow with proposed train and tram strikes this week, which will grind the city to a halt.

The fraudulent misuse of the myki card, train cancellations and delays are causing chaos in Melbourne, but it is the poor train and bus services that are creating anger among Geelong residents who use public transport.

A packed Grovedale Sports Club public transport community forum held this week, hosted

by South Barwon MP Andrew Katos and Federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson, told the Members of Parliament that the introduction of the Regional Rail Link had come with inadequate rolling stock, overcrowded and dirty trains, and ongoing delayed services.

The lack of express services, off-peak services, an additional service to Warrnambool and services directly to South Geelong were all raised on the night.

The most anger though was directed at PTV and the new bus routes, timetables and new bus stops.

PTV came under fire for its short consultation period over the summer that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t allow residents an opportunity to put their views forward, and many on the night said that PTV virtually ignored the wishes and needs of those using bus services - particu-

Many at the forum preferred the old bus routes that provided a quicker destination and nearly all demanded PTV to review the current routes as a matter of urgency.

Other residents who were not able to attend due to distance contacted MPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offices providing written concerns.

It is on that basis that I, with South Barwon MP Andrew Katos, committed to holding another forum in Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s north so public transport users could share their thoughts and concerns with their sitting Members and transport operators to effect change

and improved services.

PTV will be invited to the meeting along with other transport operators, and other interested groups, to have the opportunity to address the concerns of users and also provide future ideas of giving public transport users a fast, efficient, reliable, clean and safe service in the future. This should be a right not a privilege.

REFINEMENT: Hyundai has resurrected the Sonata nameplate.

By PETER ANDERSON IT’S okay, it’s okay, hush now things have changed.

Hyundai has dusted off the nameplate it put out to pasture after adorning a series of fairly unspectacular mid-sized sedans, whipping off the covers of a much more attractive and capable car to take on a segment dominated

by Toyota’s recently perked-up Camry, with Mazda’s 6 some way behind.

The Sonata joins the i40 (which, oddly, is known as Sonata in the US) in the local range, offering two very different-looking cars in roughly the same segment.

Confused? Don’t be. They’re quite different.

The new Sonata range is spearheaded by the entry-level Active at $29,990 and topped by the $41,990 Premium. Sandwiched between the two at $36,990 is the Elite that will grace our driveway for the next few months.

Your money buys you a sixspeaker stereo with DVD player, Bluetooth and USB, dual-zone climate control, 17-inch alloys, cruise control, sat-nav, electric driver’s seat adjustment, automatic headlights and wipers, keyless entry and start, entirely convincing fake leather seats, front and rear parking sensors with rear view camera, full-size spare.

Hyundai Sonata shares its design language with the very impressive Genesis, with buckets of Germanic influence, which makes sense given the head of design is Peter Schreyer. Finish, particularly the paint, is up there with the Genesis too.

The sharp creases cut through flatter, less curvy sheetmetal than the rest of its stablemates and the gentle arc of the roofline has a lot of Audi A5 in it, ending in a short deck. The boot itself is gigantic and as you work your way forward, space is a recurring theme.

The rear seat has limo-like space if not a particularly luxurious bench seat, but three adults will fit side by side, with plenty of leg-room but not a lot of personal hip space.

The distinctive headlights and daytime running lights give

Hyundai Sonata a strong new face, along with the corporate Hyundai grille. It’s an assured design and is as subtly detailed as any Hyundai. We’ve gotten used to the Korean company’s offerings looking good, now we’re starting to see a real maturity with this new direction.

Inside isn’t quite as assured as the exterior. The dash structure is a bit of a cliff and again draws on the interior design of the Genesis.

It doesn’t hang together as well as the exterior, but the materials are good with mostly good fit.

As the youngest member of the family continues to test the upper limits of every rear seat that arrives on the driveway, it’s nice to get in and not hear complaints from the rear seat about leg-room.

The Sonata lands with six airbags, ABS, brake assist, traction and stability controls and scored five ANCAP stars.

Hyundai’s software boffins have been a bit hit and miss over the years. The better examples tend to be found in the lower, Active models where there’s less ambition. It all works, but sometimes it doesn’t activate after having to agree not to crash while using it. It sometimes forgets to find your phone and, embarrassingly, there’s a few typos.

The Sonata is powered by the company’s own Theta II fourcylinder turbo. It’s a strong unit with 180 Kw of power and 350 Nm of torque. It’s mated to the Korean company’s own six-speed automatic.

Sadly, it’s missing stop-start which is starting to look more unfortunate as more and more companies use this emission reducing system. The claimed fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 9.2 litres per 100km and as we’re still running it in, we’re seeing 10.9 L/100km, which isn’t bad considering the outputs. It’s slowly sinking, but without that stop-start, it’s unlikely to get too much lower. We’ll see.

We’ve been most impressed with the Sonata straight off the bat. The first impression is one of impressive refinement. Some of Hyundai’s petrol engines have

a habit of sounding a little coarse under load but this one barely makes a peep, even when revving.

The transmission has always been a good one, and handles the duties of moving the 1645 kg Sonata about.

There’s also been a huge improvement in the driving dynamics. A rigorous program by the Australian suspension team has seen the Sonata’s road manners elevated above the usual tunes we used to have to put up with.

While this isn’t a hard-riding sportster, an excellent balance has been struck between comfort, grip and control. It probably rolls a little more than the keen driver would like but it’s an immensely comfortable and quiet car to tackle the morning commute.

One black mark, almost literally, are the headlights. They are so meek we have to keep checking they’ve been turned on. It’s a great pity they’re like this because Hyundai headlights are generally good.

Other details that have been sorted are the stability and traction controls. Again, older Hyundais chopped the power to the wheels as soon as any slip was detected, sometimes hanging you out to dry. Turning off the traction control became part of the startup routine because it was too vicious. The new Sonata is a lot more finessed, with a little bit of slip allowed before a gentle intervention.

The traction control stays on even when there’s some fun to be had (there has so far been little opportunity) but we’ve certainly come to enjoy having 180 kW underfoot, noticing some mild torque steer when booted.

SUMMING UP 3.5/5 Minor niggles aside, it’s been a great start with our new car. The neighbours, while used to the parade of metal on the driveway have taken a keen interest, asking which Audi it is. Imagine their surprise when they’re told it’s a Hyundai.

LIKES: Strong engine, great looks, huge space.

DISLIKES: Unfinished infotainment system, no stop-start, headlight strength.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN CHRIS Scott is adamant Geelong will not be a lame duck finalist should it make the top eight.

The Geelong coach said the team was “fighting and scrapping” to make the finals for a record ninth consecutive time.

“If we do make it are we going to be a walkover in the first week of the finals? That’s not my view,” Scott declared this week.

“With the percentage the way it is given Adelaide’s game against Brisbane, it appears the two points was as good as the four.”

Last Saturday’s draw with St Kilda was widely seen to be a setback for Geelong but even a win would have left the Cats - ironically - at the mercy of the Crows.

A Crows win against a safely ensconced West Coast will spell the end of the Cats, leaving the Dangerfield Cup in the last round at Simonds Stadium a dead rubber.

But first things first: Geelong needs to beat Collingwood on Friday night before embarking on the nervous wait until Sunday.

Scott agreed: “For all the possibilities our focus is on playing well on Friday night. We’ll be desperate and ready to play our best”.

The broadcast of the Crows Eagles game from Adelaide Oval will have most Geelong fans engrossed - not to mention the players and coaches.

Scott said he would watch the match the same as he would with any approaching opposition side.

“We’ll watch the game closely.

“If we don’t get the job done on Friday night it won’t matter.

“Assuming we do, we’ll put a lot of work into Adelaide and make sure we knock them over.

“If Adelaide win that game and we can’t make the finals, as professionals we’ll be doing everything we can to make sure we beat Adelaide the next week.”

The game against Collingwood will have a highlight all its own, however, when Daniel Menzel makes his long-awaited return to senior football.

Scott all but confirmed the move on Tuesday, saying Menzel was “likely”.

“We’re not in a position this early in our preparation to have certainty around our selections but, given his last fortnight in particular, he’s well and truly in the frame.

“If everything goes well he’s likely but we’re just not in a position to guarantee it, so I don’t want to get people’s hopes up.“ Menzel had a break at the weekend due to a scheduling quirk between the AFL and VFL draws but played a solid six games beforehand.

The successful return of ruckman/forward Nathan Vardy last week signalled a continuing changing of the guard, with stalwart defender Jared Rivers conceding the battle of his wounded knee.

Warriors waiting to fight for place

By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong has a three-week wait to discover the opponent it will play to stay in the top flight of the NPL in the side’s final match of the year.

The Warriors will endure the nervous wait after escaping automatic relegation with a 2-0 victory against Werribee on Sunday.

The finals-type atmosphere featured high-intensity play from both sides from the first minute.

Nikola Jurkovic came close on five minutes when he pounced on a loose ball on top of the goal square only to lift his shot slightly high.

Milan Savic had a chance to open Werribee’s account when he ran onto a through-ball but squandered his possession, which Daniel Zilic cleaned up neatly.

Just before half-time in-form Vito Cichello had a 20m attempt skim past the top corner, resulting in the teams going into the sheds 0-0 at half time.

The Warriors seized their opportunities in the second half.

In the 55th minute skipper Matt Townley drove a free kick from 40m out into the box, testing Werribee keeper Frano Saric’s reach. The ball came out the back of a pack for Michael Grgic to drive home, much to the relief of hundreds of Warriors supporters who travelled to the match.

Frank Benvenuto was at it again, casting hard-body lures to catch a well-conditioned brown trout of 43cm. Mick Zsargo was fishing a mudeye under when a 62cm brown trout over 3kg disrupted his Sunday afternoon, sending him running up and down the rock wall.

Other anglers working lures along the wall encountered rainbow trout to 1.5kg and the odd redfin of 35cm. With the water levels rising, the main rock wall is hard to go past in the mornings and evenings.

Anglers in kayaks caught reasonable numbers of redfin from the Barwon River, with some fish reaching 38cm and almost 1kg.

Casting deep-diving hard-body lures around snags worked, while covering plenty of water achieved better numbers of fish.

Lake Bullen Merri produced quality Chinook salmon to 2.5kg.

Patient anglers who fished pilchard fillets or pink Powerbait

caught the best-quality fish.

Justin Rayner made the trip down to Tasmania for a few days fly fishing at the renowned Twin Lakes. Justin’s trip was certainly worthwhile, producing brown trout to 7kg and some trophysized brook trout, which is quite an accomplishment at Twin Lakes.

Saltwater anglers began feeling the onset of snapper fever, although fish were few and far between around Port Phillip and Corio bays. In the meantime, squid kept anglers busy around Clifton Springs, especially down toward Hermsley Rd in clear water.

The Barwon River estuary was again a hot spot for all the usual specie. Bait fishing produced mulloway to 65cm and whiting to 40cm around the river mouth.

Anglers who cast from Fairhaven Beach or the rock

platforms either side of Lorne beached Australian salmon to 1.5kg, with Sea Iron Pelacus lures getting the job done.

Portland continued enjoying one of its greatest runs of large southern bluefin tuna to 110kg, which are referred to as ‘barrels’.

Numerous tuna were boated daily as close in as the lighthouse.

Larger skirted lures and Rapala Xrap 30s accounted for most of the big tuna. Anglers unable to boat a barrel at least scored smaller school-sized fish of around 15kg.

Leigh Potter and Dylan Wolter were on the water off Portland early on Sautrday, boating blue-

fin of 98.8kg. After many trips and numerous hours on the water they were ecstatic to finally land a barrel.

Apollo Bay also gave up tuna over 80kg. From all reports, the large fish were less prolific than at Portland.

Anyone wanting to go fishing over the next week should try Portland for the tuna of a lifetime, while bearing in mind that the barrels can disappear almost overnight. Otherwise, squid at Clifton Springs will be a worthwhile option, along with Chinook salmon at Lake Bullen Merri or redfin in the Barwon River around Queen’s Park.
