Attack dog put down by council A GERMAN shepherd cross rottweiler was put down on Tuesday after it jumped a fence and bit a woman walking through Narre Warren, and later allegedly tried to attack police officers and council rangers. The woman was rushed to hospital after last week’s dog attack which saw her sustain significant bite wounds to her left arm as well as minor wounds to her right thigh. The victim was walking along a walkway between Narre Warren North Road and Peggie Court about 2.20pm on Friday 21 August when the dog jumped a fence and bit her arm and leg. When police and council rangers promptly attended the scene, the same dog is believed to have jumped over the fence again and allegedly tried to attack them but was fended off and no more injuries were sustained, according to a spokesperson from Narre Warren CIU. City of Casey manager Community Safety Caroline Bell confirmed council staff had attended the scene but did not confirm that the dog had tried to attack the staff and police of-
ficers except to say “Council’s Local Laws Officers visited the property to investigate and kept the dog contained until the owner of the dog returned.” The dog was later surrendered to council on the same day, and was euthanised on Tuesday by Casey Council’s pound provider, the Lost Dogs’ Home. “Council will investigate the matter and determine whether the matter will proceed to court,” Ms Bell said. “The victim of the dog attack is also able to pursue civil action.” It follows another incident earlier this month where ‘Betty’ the border collie was attacked by another dog in Hampton Park. Since the 9 August incident, the City of Casey announced in a Facebook post that they had “established contact” with the owner of the dog which attacked Betty, who reportedly fled the scene. Ms Bell this week told Star News the council was still investigating the attack on Betty but said the accused had been “cooperative with council, including reimbursing all veterinary fees to the victim”.
