“Council is simply not able to take out loans. The only way that the Emu Swamp Dam project will proceed is with 90 per cent of the funding being provided by the state and federal governments,” he said.

This comes after Emu Swap Dam only received a $20,000 allocation in the SDRC budget, $0 in the state budget and Glen Niven was the only dam with a significant contribution in either budget with $1 million for repairs in the state budget.

THE next step in the Emu Swamp Dam project is underway with the announcement from Councillor Vic Pennisi that external funding has been supplied to develop a business case for the project.

Cr Pennisi announced that the Stanthorpe Community Reference Panel has endorsed the recommendation by the Emu Swamp Irrigators subcommittee (ESI) to engage with consulting firm Jacobs in formulating the business plan.

With Federal Government’s recent unveiling of the Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper and the announcement of a $500 million National Water Infrastructure Fund, the community reference panel said now was the time to take Emu Swamp Dam further.

“Once there is an advanced draft of the business case, all potential irrigators from the dam will be able to provide a detailed and informed response to commercial questions about the volume of water allocations they will purchase at various price points,” a statement said.

The ESI will fund the plan that is expected to be completed in collaboration with the project control group for Emu Swamp Dam and relevant officers in Southern Downs Regional Council with the view of having all stakeholders adopt the final plan.

“In my view, the money could come from many sources such as governments, private sectors, foreign investors, and users of the water,” Cr Pennisi said.

By DANE LILLINGSTONE WE ARE in the middle of Road Safety Week and RACQ has warned Southern Downs drivers to be careful on the road.

Only last week a crash on the Cunningham Highway left a young man dead after his ute hit a milk tanker in the early hours of the morning, becoming the 145th fatality on Queensland roads this year.

RACQ Executive Manager Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said the Southern Downs had a lot of travelling and seasonal workers passing through and this has the potential to cause major hazards.

“Both tourists and local road users must be familiar with Queensland’s road rules before getting behind the wheel of a car,” Mr Spalding.

“Visitors especially need to be mindful of Queensland’s long distances and ensure

they’re travelling in safe, roadworthy vehicles.

“Fatigue is always a major issue in rural areas, and we’re reminding all drivers they must rest for a minimum of 15 minutes every two hours.”

Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Peter Blundell said there were already steps in place to help prevent accidents with a Road Safety taskforce set-up in the Southern Downs after several serious accidents with tourists.

“As a result we’re now working on a number of strategies, including line-marking and signage,” Cr Blundell said.

“In addition we will all host a forum in Stanthorpe on 28 September, to discuss road safety and driving for overseas visitors holding working holiday visas.

“It’s our hope the forum will assist in educating visitors to the Southern Downs region on

these very important driving and road safety matters.”

The RACQ has also warned that using a mobile phone while driving was fast becoming number one in the Fatal Five for killing Queenslanders, even comparing it to where drink driving was 20 years ago.

Driver distraction contributed to 19 fatalities and 1,343 hospitalised casualties on Queensland roads in 2013. The Queensland Police Service reported that approximately 76 per cent of Queenslanders used their mobile phone illegally in the car.

Their suggestions are to stay focused by: In the car, switch your phone to silent so you’re not tempted.

Keep your phone out of sight.

Consider placing it in the glove box.

Pull over safely before grabbing your phone or GPS.

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has said that residents have been lining up to take advantage of rate discounts by paying them before the 4 September due date.

They have said that since rates hit mailboxes on August 3, residents have been taking up the offer with 17 per cent of total rates already paid within a week and half of notices being issued.

Mayor Peter Blundell said that staff feedback had reported a similar level of complaints to previous years.

“In relation to complaints,

I understand that some people are disappointed with the rate increase; however council has to take steps now to redress the financial situation to improve things for the future,” he said.

“I would also urge people not to take out their frustrations on council’s customer service and rates staff.

“Staff are doing their very best to answer ratepayer questions and provide advice on payment options for those finding it difficult to pay their rates.

By DANE LILLINGSTONE AN ELDERLY man charged with manufacturing and possessing cannabis has had his sentence downgraded in Stanthorpe.

This comes after a week when Queensland’s Shadow Health Minister backed the move to investigate the medicinal use of cannabis in a further sign that legal medical cannabis use may not be far away.

The Stanthorpe man was said to have grown cannabis for his dying wife. The woman had been suffering from terminal cancer and the cannabis had been grown for pain relief, the court heard.

could have been much larger but instead he was putting the man on a 12-month good behaviour bond and fined $1000 with no conviction recorded.

Medical cannabis has been the subject of debate in Australia recently with the recommendation from the Federal Legal Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee to establish a new regulator of medical cannabis.

The move is seen as a step towards the possible legalisation of medical cannabis for medical conditions.

Queensland Shadow Health Minister Mark McArdle said it was something that should be investigated.

Armed robber A 19-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment over the robbery of a service station in Warwick earlier this year.

The man had pleaded guilty immediately after being caught and was facing sentencing for one count of armed robbery and another charge for possessing a glass pipe.

Warwick District Court heard that on 17 April this year, the man entered the service station at 8.10pm on a Friday night wearing a black hoodie and black mask.

He then produced a knife with a 20-centimetre blade and started waving it at the attendant and saying “give me the cash.”

The Toowoomba born man had only been in Warwick a few weeks when he committed the offence. He produced a pillow case for the money, and is believed to have then received around $600 from the attendant.

The 24-year-old service station attendant was alone in the store at the time and reported seeing a man dressed in black entering the store who then produced a knife with a 10-centimetre handle and a 20-centimetre blade.

After putting the money in the pillowcase the man left and the attendant

pushed the panic button.

At 8.15pm, two police officers intercepted the man after being only 300 metres away from the incident. Upon being interviewed he admitted his guilt.

He said he was going to Stanthorpe and needed the money but the court also heard it may have been because of drug dealers wanting to collect their debt.

It was noted in the court that he had no previous criminal record but had been using the drug ice.

Upon handing down his sentence Judge Butler noted that the case “is a particularly concerning one” and said to the man “(you) clearly had thought about what you were going to do.”

It was said that because the service station was providing a service to people after hours, it was a vulnerable target and had to be protected.

“It’s an offence to our community,” Judge Butler said.

“These employees must be protected.”

He was sentenced to a total of three years’ imprisonment with 123 days counting as time already served for armed robbery and received no further punishment for the drug utensil.

He will be eligible for parole after six months served.

House burnt

Shocking drunk driver over limit ON MONDAY a 34-year-old Mt Colliery man was allegedly caught three times over the legal limit in a school zone.

The man was pulled over outside the Killarney School at 2.50pm and is believed to have blown 0.168.

His licence was suspended immediately and he will appear in Warwick Magistrates’ Court on 8 September.

More drug drivers OVER the weekend a total of 10 people returned positive roadside drug tests across the region.

Warwick, Stanthorpe, Goondiwindi, Allora and Clifton all received at least one positive roadside drug test over the weekend of 15 and 16 August.

They were caught through a combination of roadside drug testing and random tests.

The man was sentenced to three years' jail, in Warwick District Court.

Drug offences on the rise STANTHORPE police recorded four positive roadside drug tests over

the past week and found a quantity of illegal drugs in searches.

Last Thursday night a 32-yearold man from Basin Pocket was charged with possessing cannabis and a smoking utensil after his vehicle was stopped at Applethorpe. On Sunday night, a search of a vehicle in Applethorpe uncovered a quantity of cannabis and a smoking utensil with a 16-year-old Glen Innes youth receiving drug diversion as a result.

A search warrant executed on an Amosfield Road property premises on Friday night resulted in a quantity of drugs and drug paraphernalia being found.

Drink rite at Stanthorpe RSL AS A part of Road Safety Week this week, Stanthorpe police will hold a drink rite event at the Stanthorpe RSL on Friday at 5pm.

Community members will be given the opportunity to be periodically breath tested in order for them to better gauge how many standard drinks they are pouring when the make themselves a drink.

The activity is aimed at raising awareness in those who consume alcohol and then plan to drive a vehicle.

By DANE LILLINGSTONE A DEVASTATING destroyed a home in Inglewood just after midnight on Friday.

Emergency services were contacted at 12.45am on 15 August, police said, after the occupants of the house, on Columba Road in Gore, woke to their house on fire.

They escaped the blaze unhurt but the house was totally destroyed.

Police and fire investigation services are investigating the matter.

In an unrelated matter, police are investigating a quantity of fishing gear stolen from a shed on Meneely Street, Warwick.

Sometime between Tuesday 11 and Saturday 15 August, burglars broke into a shed, and the owner reported the matter to police on Saturday after they realised the fishing equipment was missing.

Police urge anyone with information to contact the Warwick police station or Crime Stoppers.

Family and friends make Florence’s day

By JOYCE MARSH WOODENBONG CORRESPONDENT NEAR the beautiful forests verging Woodenbong with the tinkling sounds of bell birds and stunning scenery, Florence Maloney celebrated her 90th birthday.

Florence’s 90th party was held at daughter and sonin-law Ashley Walmsley’s home, which proved the ideal setting with 100 family and friends who had gathered together for the occasion.

Some local and others travelled from Brisbane, Lismore, Warwick, Sunshine Coast, the furthest travellers were grandchildren Daniel and Koreiza from Melbourne.

Florence’s family members spanning four generation were present in numbers.

Don’t mess with marriage THE US President has celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision to legalise ‘marriage equality’ by lighting up the White House with rainbow colours. Many world leaders have joined in the politically correct push to recognise ‘same-sex marriage’. Too many of our politicians are jumping on the bandwagon urging ‘equality’ and ‘tolerance’. Some feebly propose that if Ireland can change, so should Australia.

Sadly, even some church leaders are suggesting that we should go with the flow and marry those in a ‘loving relationship’.

The important question to be asked is “what is marriage and where and when did it come into being?” If it is a man-made institution then it could possibly be modified to suit changing circumstances and attitudes.

The truth is that our loving Heavenly Father, the Creator of all things, created Adam and Eve and united them in the covenant of marriage.

They complemented each other - male and female - and as a result of this intimate, loving and deep union children would be conceived and born into a family relationship involving a father and mother.

Any sexual relationship, other than God’s institution of marriage between a man and a woman, cannot pretend or claim to be ‘marriage’.

Vocal minorities and social experimenters must not be allowed to hijack the meaning and essence of ‘marriage’ which the Creator ordained. Some other name should be found to describe their relationships.

God has made it clear that any sexual relations outside of marriage (which is between a man and a woman) are breaking his law and purpose for mankind.

Jesus himself endorsed God’s institution of marriage and creation. He said “at the beginning the Creator made them male and female and said,

‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and the two will become one flesh’. So they are no longer two but one. Therefore what God has joined together let man not separate”.(Mt.19:4-6). He was very much aware of the Scripture where God says “I hate divorce”. (Mal.2:16).

Jesus further emphasised the sacredness of marriage and its lifelong intention. The purpose of God from the beginning was that marriage was for life. And Jesus added “I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery” (Mt.19:9). Sadly our selfish throwaway society which lacks commitment, marriage is devalued, families are demolished and children are left traumatised, insecure and confused.

Our loving God wants the best for his crowning creation - mankind - who were made in his image. If we give serious consideration to and accept God’s plan for our lives, we will truly be blessed. God wants us all to be forgiven, saved and become part of his family. That’s why he sent his Son Jesus to die on the cross as our substitute.

He paid the penalty for our sins so that we could be forgiven and adopted as God’s children. There is no sin that God will not forgive if we truly repent and accept Christ as our Saviour.

What love! What a gift! What certainty for the future!

The council stated that “in a perfect world we would have the site moved to where it won’t affect anyone but for a number of reasons that can’t happen”, Why? This appears to be an industrial site situated in the midst of homes that no doubt are rated residential A. The very words of the mayor as stated above raised questions of the accuracy of the rating system. The recent purchase of a residence on acreage adjoining the industrial site will further complicate matters. This whole disastrous affair will take for ever to improve the living standards to a beleaguered community, and must cease operating until operators get the process correct, or be compelled to relocate.

Gay lobby The Gay marriage debate is hotting up. Private Member’s Bills are being introduced into Parliament. PM Tony wants to have a plebiscite and Scott Morrison: a referendum on the issue.

We must give the gay lobby credit for the way they have advanced their cause over the decades; an activity a few short years ago, which was a criminal offence, to changing marriage laws allowing same-sexers to marry. There has never been, in modern times, an issue that has progressed so quickly, spearheaded by such a wellorganised and funded minority.

The days of ‘coming out’ of the closet to the acceptance of same-sex marriage has been accomplished by propaganda and money, lavishly spent by the proponents of the gay lifestyle.

Shouldn’t we be told who has been funding the gay movement? It would make for interesting reading.

PM Tony is attempting to hold the line against

gay marriage, but he could lose the fight, and his premiership. The forces that are arrayed against his are determined to bring Australia in line with those western nations who have legislated for gay marriage.

Sandra helps out

By DANE LILLINGSTONE SANDRA Head, as part of her work with the Rotary Club of Warwick Sunrise, has been helping BUSHkids for the past three years.

She says she helps them because it’s all about getting children on the right track.

“BUSHkids is not only orientated on kids but it’s about helping the families as well, and the parents. I help because they provide all of their services to children completely free,” she said.

“They cover such a wide range of services including providing an occupational therapist, psychologist, speech pathologist and a fam-

ily health support worker.”

The Royal Queensland Bush Children’s Health Scheme BUSHkids operates from six centres in rural areas including Bundaberg, Dalby, Emerald, Mount Isa and Warwick. They also provide a family support health worker in Inglewood.

The Warwick Centre offers groups for kids in helping with things like social skills, gross and fine motor skills and literacy and handwriting groups. Parents can partake in parenting education sessions on things like ADHD and toileting.

BUSHkids can be accessed by children who are experiencing de-

velopmental difficulties or behavioural or emotional support issues that they are unable to receive help with elsewhere in the community.

Sandra says that at the moment, the demand is outweighing the supply.

“There is a waiting list. There’s a huge need for more to be done as they can’t cater to everyone right now,” she said.

You can get involved by donating at their stall at the bottom of escalators at Rose City on September 11 and 12 or by volunteering your time at one of their centres or helping out with fund-raising events.

Grants are open

By DANE LILLINGSTONE FEDERAL Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott says the time is now to apply for a new grants program for bush communities.

The government’s new Stronger Communities Program is expected to deliver $150,000 per year, for two years, to fund small capital projects in the Maranoa electorate.

“I have long fought for better infrastructure in the bush and this new Stronger Communities Program will deliver not only infrastructure but also social benefits to Maranoa communities,” Mr Scott said.

“This is an exciting opportunity for local communities to work with me to identify potential projects which will contribute to our region’s long-term vibrancy and viability.

“I encourage not-for-profit organisations to contact my Roma office and submit an expression of interest for funding by September 10.”

Mr Scott said people will be able to apply for up to $20,000 in funding.

“Funding will be available, through a competitive application process, for funding of at least $5000 and up to a maximum of $20,000 and must provide matching cash or in-kind funding on at least a dollar for dollar basis,” he said.

“I’ve established a community consultation committee - with a member from each corner of the Maranoa - to evaluate and identify priority projects to ensure this funding delivers the best possible outcomes for our community.”

The applications for grant funding will be assessed against the program guidelines by the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development to ensure the viability and sustainable of the proposed projects. TUESDAY was Vietnam Veterans Day and a remembrance service was held at the Warwick Cenotaph in Leslie Park.

Veterans, local community members and members of the Southern Downs Regional Council attended the service.

The day is honoured on 18 August as it commemorates the Battle of Long Tan - the day in 1966 where 108 Australian soldiers fought off over 2000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong. Some 18 Australians lost their lives in the battle.

Reverend Kevin Stow led the Act of Remembrance Prayer and a prayer for our armed forces today, Scots PGC student Christopher McCosker gave a bagpipes performance and Deputy Mayor Ross Bartley gave a special address.

“I saw the men leaving the community and this left many gaps in our community. We were teenage school boys, but as cadets we paid serious attention to what was being taught as it appeared the Vietnam War was going to be a long campaign,” Cr Bartley said.

Seniors week Southern Downs enjoys international flavour kicking on Casey’s tips

ROSE City Shoppingworld started their Seniors Week celebrations on Tuesday with sparkling entertainment from singer Jenny Brosnan in the food court. Yesterday, the organisers had Spin and Win together with a host of exhibits from local organisations with something to offer seniors.

Today, they have Quizmaster Bryan Pask hosting a trivia competition in the food court area. A number of prizes will be on offer from Rose City retailers, so make sure you grab a seat early as it kicks off at 10.30am.

Tomorrow sees the Dennis Sankey Duo together with Rainbow FM also kicking off at 10.30am at the food court. The station will also be broadcasting on Saturday at the top of the travelator.

THE exchange program between Warwick and Japanese city Kumiyama has continued with a visit to Warwick by students and the town mayor last week.

The delegation from Kumiyama that included Mayor Shinki, his wife Mrs Shinki and Secretary Mr Okuno visited the Southern Downs for three days. The Kumiyama school students were also here as part of a cultural, economic and student exchange.

Both cites may be connected through the exchange program but Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell said he hoped to extend this relationship to include any future economic opportunities.

“Kumiyama has a significant

manufacturing component as well as an agricultural sector that make up its economy. From this perspective, there are some similarities with the Southern Downs region,” he said.

The delegation was here to investigate how businesses worked in the Southern Downs with their itinerary including visits to Grove Juice, Integria, Maydan Feedlot and Denny's Silo and Engineering.

Denny’s was recently purchased by multinational Japanese company Satake.

“Fortunately one of the Japanese representatives of Satake was in Allora during the visit to Denny’s, so was able to explain the business and their outlook in detail to the Kumiyama delegates,” Cr Blundell said.

THE 20th annual Historic Leyburn Sprints ripped through Leyburn on the weekend.

Over 220 cars participated in the annual event, held to commemorate the 1949 Australian Grand Prix. The big prize on offer, the Col Furness Memorial Trophy, will be awarded for the outright fastest time.

For a second consecutive year, Dean Amos took down the big one in his Gould GR37 Judd V8. He managed to navigate the 1 kilometre track in 42.954 seconds and in the process shaving more than a second off his 2014 lap record.

He narrowed out tough competition from 2012-'13 winner Warwick Hutchinson and his rotary-engined Van Dieman.

Amos said the winning lap was a blur.

“I actually hardly remember that run - I just pulled my finger out and went for it. My hands were shaking on the wheel as I crossed the line,” he said.

The event managed to build on previous years with Saturday’s crowd alone believed to be double the total attendance in 2014.

The weekend featured 140 cars in a Shannons Shine n’ Shine, 25 vintage caravans, a sold-out legends dinner and appearances by three famous racing cars of yesteryear, Sir Jack Brabham’s 1987 BT23C-1 Formula 2, the Mildren-Waggott ‘Yellow Submarine’ and 1965 Bathurst winner Bo Seton’s Ford Capri.

Stanthorpe welcomes Super Cup

By DANE LILLINGSTONE OVER the weekend Stanthorpe welcomed two Intrust Super Cup teams with open arms and along with it a festival of rugby league to the Southern Downs.

On Saturday night the Stanthorpe Gremlins hosted the Intrust Super Cup Gala Dinner with a three course meal prepped by Queensland College Wine Tourism and entertainment by poet/comedian Marco Gliori.

Both the Burleigh Bears and Sunshine Coast Falcons were in attendance at the dinner after participating in various schools programs over the weekend.

The night’s MC was journalist and Queensland rugby league identity Bernie Pramberg. There were raffles and a sporting memorabilia auction.

On Sunday, despite both

teams being in the bottom half of the ladder, Stanthorpe witnessed both a highly entertaining and top quality match between the Burleigh Bears and Sunshine Coast Falcons.

Although the match did seesaw back and forth at the end, the Bears pipped the Falcons 18-16.

The weekend was a part of QRL Intrust Super Cup’s ‘Get in the Game’ Country Week with Charters Towers, Bundaberg, Blackall, Dalby and Innisfail also hosting Queensland Cup matches.

Being a Melbourne Storm feeder team, the Falcons fielded a centre pairing of Storm players Hymel Hunt and Samoan international Young Tonumaipea with a shared 23 games of NRL experience between them.

On top of that were frequent Storm players five-eighth Ben Hampton and massive forward

Jordan McLean. But the Bears weren’t without experience either. The Gold Coast Titans feeder club featured occasional Titans hooker Chad Redman and a left-side three-quarter pairing of Jamie Dowling (10 NRL games) and Titans 118 game player Kevin Gordon.

Despite clouds lurking for most of the day, the rain managed to stay away as flocks of locals converged on Sullivan Oval.

Kids played around on the other fields, oldies pulled up their folding chairs for the best seats and all around there was a great atmosphere on the day.

Surrounded by Channel Nine cameras and NRL stars, the entire weekend was a special event for Stanthorpe with locals sure to be itching for it to all return again soon.

Big weekend for polocrosse THIS weekend both the Australian Junior Challenge and NTI Rose Bowl will be contested at Morgan Park.

The Warwick Polocrosse Club will host the three day event in what will be the final hit out before the Queensland State Championships.

Two junior teams have been selected from the Australian Squad to play in a round robin competition against two state teams from Queensland and New South Wales.

Warwick Polocrosse Club President Les Fraser said “the idea of the competition is to give the up-and-coming players of tomorrow an opportunity to show their talent and prepare them for some international competition.”

The junior teams will compete over two nights and three days with the curtain-raiser being held on Friday night with Warwick local Amelia Beck lining up for Queensland.

Lucinda Clutterbuck from Piccolo Films is one of Australia’s foremost contemporary animators and animation producers.

Lucinda’s unique indie style animations will be the subject of her four day workshop taught in partnership with Sydney based animator and writer Lewis Argall. She has made over 20 short animations and was awarded a film-makers fellowship in 2005 by the Australian Film Commission in recognition of her skills and significant body of work.

Daffodils help find a cure CANCER Council Queensland’s Warwick Volunteer Branch will be out in force this Daffodil Day - 28 August - raising vital awareness and funds.

The branch will sell hundreds of fresh daffodils, pens, pins and bears to support the one in two Queenslanders who will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

CCQ Volunteer Branch Events Co-ordinator Carol Cooke said the branch was preparing for a special delivery of daffodils from locations around Australia.

“We receive a very special delivery of fresh daffodils the day before the iconic fund-raiser and will be busy preparing for an exciting day turning Warwick yellow,” Ms Cooke said.

“Daffodil Day has special meaning for so many people in our community, including myself.

“I lost my husband to bowel cancer nine years ago and have been a strong supporter of Cancer Council for the past 15 years in the hope that one day we will find a cure for the disease.

WITH only three rounds of fixtures remaining, the NRL minor premiership is still up for grabs and the race to make the top eight is on in earnest.

The Broncos retain their position at the top of the ladder after their emphatic win over the Dragons. The Roosters snuck into second spot ahead of the Cowboys in for and against after their win over the Eels.

Cowboys supporters will be hoping the loss to the Bunnies was just a blip on the radar.

The Bunnies have hopped into the top four, but injuries and suspension will make their task a little more difficult in coming weeks.

Melbourne’s impressive showing against the Sharks sees them in fifth spot with a couple of tough games to finish their season. Cronulla, the Dogs and Dragons sit at the lower end of the eight but circling are the Sea Eagles ready to pounce if the Dragons falter again.

Big match Friday night as the Bunnies and Dogs go head to head at ANZ. Souths will be without Luke and Keary in this game after the pair accepted a one -week ban for infringements. Issac Luke faces a double whammy; he is contesting a grade two shoulder charge. The Dogs are not unscathed losing their hooker Michael Lichaa who requires surgery on a leg injury. Big test for the Bunnies here. In a game that could go either way, I am leaning towards the Dogs.

The Sharks were given a reality check on Monday night blown away by a clinical Storm outfit. They must regroup on Saturday against the unpredictable Tigers. The Tigers who promised so much this season find themselves in a scrap at the bottom of the ladder anxious to avoid the wooden spoon. In addition to their loss to Melbourne, there was more pain for Cronulla when Ben Barba limped from the field with an ankle injury. Despite being held tryless on Monday night, the Sharks should get back in the winner's circle here.

The Cowboys travel to Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday to take on the Warriors who have looked like a ship without a rudder since the season ending injury to Shaun Johnson.

get away to an early lead and cannot afford a repeat against NQland.

The Warriors could be without Sam Tomkins who has been charged with dangerous contact on Penrith’s Louis Brown. The Cowboys will be keen to bounce back after their loss to the Bunnies and should keep themselves in contention with a win here.

The clash of the round is the game between the Broncos and Roosters.

A Broncos win will give them one hand on the JJ Giltinan Shield. A loss will propel the Roosters to equal top of the table. Brisbane was impressive against the Dragons. Their opponents had three times the amount of possession inside the opposition 20-metre line but Brisbane dominated the scoreboard. The Roosters looked below par in their win over the Eels and did not grab the lead until late in the second half. They are sure to lift for this game but will be without one of their main men Aidan Guerra. The Broncos can do no more than keep winning and are at the top of the table for a reason.

The Titans host the Raiders on Sunday afternoon. It was another heartbreaking near miss for the Raiders when they suffered yet another last minute loss at the hands of the Sea Eagles. In their last attacking set, the Eagles managed to snatch a win from the Raiders. Cold com-

fort for the Canberra side with Referee boss Tony Archer admitting the match-winning try was incorrectly awarded by referee Matt Cecchin.

The Raiders Paul Vaughan suffered a leg injury and Jordan Rapana is another in hot water for a shoulder charge. The Titans were in the game against the Dogs for the first half of the game but were outclassed after half time. The Titans may be without Aiden Sezer for the remainder of the season after a Sam Kasiano special and will find it difficult to win without him. The Raiders can atone for last week’s loss here.

The Sea Eagles have risen from the bottom of the table and are circling a top eight spot after their last- minute win over the Raiders.

This week they host the Eels at Brookvale. Winger Taufua is another to fall foul of the shoulder charge.

He is facing one week ban with an early plea, two if he unsuccessfully challenges the charge at the NRL judiciary. The Eels sent a scare into the Roosters camp last week when they led late into the second half.

Parramatta has the ability to spoil the party here, but Manly will start favourites and should win.

The Storm and Knights wrap up round 24 at AAMI Park. Melbourne simply did what Melbourne does best last week against the Sharks.

They showed they will be a force to be reckoned with in coming weeks.

The Knights found an overdue win over the Tigers in round 23 but this will be a different ball game, and I expect to see another Storm victory.

Honour for swimming stalwart

By JOYCE MARSH WOODENBONG CORRESPONDENT WOODENBONG Amateur Swimming Club’s Jennie Riley was recently presented with a Service Excellence Award for recognition of outstanding service to swimming.

This prestigious award was presented to Jennie at the Swimming NSW AGM in Sydney by Graham Towle, president of Swimming NSW, and SNSW board member Janelle Barnett.

Jennie has been involved with Woodenbong Amateur Swimming Club for 25 years.

She has been a committee member for 15 years, was the first female president and held the post for five years, and has held her current role as vicepresident since 2005 as well as being a life-member. She has also been heavily involved in Swimming North Coast for the past 10 years.

At an area level, Far North Coast District, Jennie was secretary for four years as well as a member of the Area

Technical Swimming Committee.

She was an energetic member of the working committee which established the constitution and by-laws to set up the merger of the Far North Coast and Mid-North Coast Districts to form the new North Coast Area where she became area vice-president and is currently the area swimming technical committee’s co-ordinator.

As a presenter and assessor she travels countless kilometres visiting many club in the North Coast Area to assist with training, development and assessments of their technical officials.

At a state level, she started as timekeeper and gained qualifications as a recorder, marshal, starter and then referee.

Jennie’s involvement has included her attending the Australian State Age Technical Official’s Workshop in Canberra and she has officiated at the NSW Age and Country Championships.

In 2014, Jennie was awarded the Swimming NSW Area Technical Swimming Co-ordinator of the Year.

Jennie also officiated at the National Age Championships and Australia Open Short Course Championships.

In a small and somewhat isolated community like Woodenbong, people like Jennie are invaluable.

She has been actively involved in the welfare of children through the NSW education system, through the leadership of youth groups in Woodenbong and Urbenville as well as the Woodenbong Amateur Swimming Club.

Jennie is a wife, mother of five children including twins, grandmother of six, a school teacher, and was recognised and awarded as Citizen of the Year at the Australia Day celebrations in 2004 for Woodenbong.

She is also a life-member of the Woodenbong Central School P&C Committee and the Upper Clarence PSSA. Her dedication to swimming extends beyond club and area level to the school system as well. She has convened and organised primary and sec-

WHAT a week it has been. I’m a little saddle sore having travelled from Brisbane to Barcaldine via Dalby Roma Blackall and various watering holes along the way. We (the Wanderers) are now winding our way back to Brisbane via Emerald where I am presently, Springsure, Biloela, Calliope Bundaberg and I’m sure there are other destinations on the itinerary.

I am happy to report that our Wanderers cricket crew which includes two Warwick representatives Ryan Collins and Lachlan Gross and several Under 19 Bulls players have put in some outstanding performances and to date remain undefeated on this tour.

On Saturday night, we were guests at the Country Week Intrust Super Cup game played in Blackall. My eyes and ears at home tell me that the game in Stanthorpe was a great success and I can report that the same can be said for the game in Blackall and also Dalby.

I caught up with many members of the QRL Central Division Board, and all agree that this is a concept that should be continued and even expanded.

It is no secret that this season the BRL has at least one club struggling for numbers and the TRL also has similar problems. Once again, these problems are repeated across the board in all other areas with administrators struggling to find answers.

Country Week, it is widely agreed, helps raise the profile but does not offer a solution.

Of course, cricket, in all of the centres we have visited, is suffering similar problems.

There are many areas with great facilities, but the numbers playing the game (cricket or league) are in decline from juniors through to seniors.

These are serious issues and must be addressed by those at the helm of the games.

Country cricket and football are the very lifeblood of our national game and if our national teams are to continue to enjoy the successes we have all become accustomed to, then more effort must be put into attracting players.

It seems that the wheels on the bus are about to start going around and around ... again so for me it is off to the next destination and probably more saddle sores.

- Casey SWEET AND SOUR IT HAS been another outstanding week in sport - Australian fans can stand proud and tall (unless you follow the Wobblies - ouch). The Diamonds were simply magnificent (who would have thought a bunch of boofy cricketers and cricket tragics would get caught up in the hype of a netball game but it was riveting). What a game and what an Ambassador for sport Allora’s Laura Geitz is.

Across in the Old Dart, as the Aussie cricket team prepare to salvage some dignity in the final test, our Women’s Cricket Side the Southern Stars is showing them how it should be done.

Meg Lanning - at 21 became Australia’s youngest-ever captain, male or female - has been a revelation in this series.

Lanning prefers to keep things very simple.

Captaincy, she says, is about going with your gut and really trying to be as proactive as you can.

I try and do that in the shorter formats, so it is probably not going to be too different in the Test series. Her approach worked. Perhaps, M. Clarke and crew should take a leaf as Chris Rogers and Pup prepare for their final Test.

Adding to Australia’s big week was the fantastic break through win of Jason Day in the PGA. Surely not to be his last major and Australian Golf and golfers are back hogging the limelight, and rightly so.

BIG DAY AT SULLIVAN OVAL MONTHS of preparation paid off for the committee of the Stanthorpe Rugby League last Sunday when a big crowd turned out to the gala day of rugby league at Sullivan Oval as the QRL brought the Intrust Super Cup to Stanthorpe as part of their annual Country Week. Congratulations to the hard working committee who showed what can be achieved in the Country.

Falcons and the Burleigh Bears which was televised live on Channel Nine was a thrilling affair, with the Bears coming from behind late in the second half to snatch a win.

In the BRL A grade game, the curtain-raiser to the Q Cup, the Stanthorpe Gremlins made it a memorable day for the locals with another big win over the Tenterfield Tigers. The final score 58-24. The Tigers were up against it after a slow start allowed the Gremlins three easy tries before the Tigers could get on the board. The Gremlins never allowed the Tigers to recover. Tigers captain coach Brendan Minns said the 1 per cent errors, lack of discipline and poor ball handling cost

his side dearly, but acknowledged that the Gremlins have been the in-form side all year.

The Gremlins have had an outstanding season, and with the Minor Premiership safely in their keeping with just one round of fixtures remaining, they head into the 2015 BRL finals in a couple of weeks very hot favourites to win their first title in several years.

Ladies League Tag has proved a crowd favourite since its introduction last season, and the big crowd at Sullivan Oval stayed on to watch the undefeated Tenterfield girls and the Gremlinettes go toe to toe after the completion of the Q Cup game.

The Tenterfield girls have dominated the competition since its inception, and on Saturday showed their class with a 20-nil win.

Stanthorpe had a 32-10 win in the Reserve grade. This week is the final fixture round of the BRL season. Tenterfield host the Cutters and Stanthorpe and Wallangarra go head to head.

REARDON IN WINNERS CIRCLE RICHARD Reardon made a welcome return to the winner’s circle last Saturday in the stroke event at the Stanthorpe Golf Club. A score of nett 68 edged out runner-up, Kilcoy visitor John Raaen who returned nett 69. The pair were the only players in the men’s event with nett scores in the 60s.

In the ladies event, Tric Fittock also returned nett 67, to win the ladies event with Lyn Ludlow taking runner-up spot after a countback with Christine Welstead, both with nett 73.

Pin shots went to Dylan Barraclough at 3/12 and B. Hepner at 17.

Pro-pins were won by Trevor Ludlow (5/14), Richard Reardon (1/10) and B. Hepner (9/18).

Tric Fittock, the Ladies winner also collected the ladies pin at 3/12 and Christine Welstead had best approach at 17.

In the run down, it was a ball each to Tom Fittock (70) and Dylan Barraclough, Ian Harvey and Mark Harris (71).

Ron Batterham did excellent work in getting the field out on time.

This Saturday a single stableford has been scheduled and the sponsor is local junior golf member, Hannah Reeves. Tee off from 11am, and the time sheet is on the board. In the starter’s box this Saturday is Tom Fittock and Bill Pyne (do we have to call him Kiwi Bill after his holiday to NZ?).

CAPELLI INTO FINALS A BEST in Downs District finish in the Group Three singles will see the Summit club’s Rob Capelli line-up in the State Finals. Congratulations to Rob on an excellent performance, and there will be plenty of support for him when he competes in the finals at the Helensvale club in October.

Conditions last Saturday were perfect on the greens at the Summit home base and a field of 14 bowlers enjoyed the sublime sunshine. All bowlers were left to contend with was fellow players enjoying the company and conditions. I guess someone has to do it. Results: A. McGlashan and Zamprogno (22) defeated A. Zamprogno, M. Sweeney (14); R. Newlands and A. Mattiazzi defeated A. White and L. Hartley 18-14. In the triples game, C. Stratford M. Empen and Q. Stanley went down 23-16 to the in-form team of B. Brown, J. Shannon and K. Mungall. Adding to the atmosphere of fun and frivolity - meat trays were raffled and seen leaving looking for a barbecue or the like were Keith Mungall and Artie White.

A reminder to all pennant players - the time for fun and frivolity is over - it is time to get down to business and pennant practice begins in earnest this Saturday at 1pm.

On Sunday, the club is holding an Open Triples trophy day 2, with some generous donors putting up the prizes. Get your teams together and advise the club as soon as possible.

Back to the Eighties makes a return on Saturday 5 September, so leave your coloured bowls at home and bring your old Billy Joels. If you cannot find your old bowls in the back of the cupboard, the club has plenty. It is always a great day as bowlers go back to dealing with the big bias and heavy bowls while bopping to ’80s tunes. Visitors are very welcome so bowlers invite a friend to come and enjoy.

BUSY WEEK FOR RRR ANOTHER busy week for Red Roosters Rumblers with over 30 players taking full advantage of the great golfing conditions and the amended format of RRR. Noah Shires took the honours with a score of 22 points. Shires is playing some great golf and has dropped a healthy three shots off his handicap. Taking the runners-up spot was the more experienced Michael Banks with a score of 21 points. In the rundown were Don Miller (20), Trevor Rock and Ian Wallace (19) and Leon Stickland (18).The pins went to Don Warrener and Brett Donovan. This week the RRR will be off the front nine and reminder that under the new format RRR can be played throughout the entire week.

CANNING DOWNS OPEN SATURDAY heralded the start of the Canning Downs Open weekend sponsored by the Warwick Credit Union. A good field of 76 players headed out on Saturday for the single stroke.

Laurie King with a score of 67 nett took the honours on Saturday after a close round. He finished just ahead of Sam McLennan after a countback. Figuring in the rundown were Ben Hollis (67), Geoff Hinze, Nathan Jones, Gordon Kerr, Trevor King and Kris McLennan (68), Viv Roser (69) and Pete Boney (70).

The nearest the pins went the way of Shane McKenzie, Trevor King, C. Newman, Rupert Smith, Don Warrener and Gunter Nickilch.

The overall gross winner of the 27 hole main event on Sunday was Hayden Gomez with 106.

Winner of the overall best nett was Gunther Nicklich with 104. Garry Adcock kicked home a winner to finish with the A grade nett with a score of 104. Brendon Jones also finished with 104 to win the B grade and in the C grade David Graggs’ score of 107 was good enough to get him a win. Gwen Mills won the ladies best nett - her score 113.

The pins went to Nathan Jones, Eamon Cockram, Nathan Jones, David Craggs, Geoff Hinze and Hayden Gomez.

This weekend a single stableford men’s event sponsored by the Horse and Jockey will be played on Saturday.

Remember there is over $1000 worth of trophies up for grabs in addition to the chance to play in the regional final on the Gold Coast. FINE DAY ON THE RANGE ANOTHER fine winter’s day on the range. Quentin Chapman was on target in the Centrefire taking out the event, relegating Brown and McArthur to the minor placings.

Visitors Nadia and Matt Johnson from Coffs Harbour were shown the ropes and tried their hand at a few of the different disciplines. Nadia is an ex -Texas girl and she and Matt are regular visitors to the area. This weekend it is pistol competitions. Saturday afternoon and Sunday mornings to mid-afternoon. A new running target for the action pistol has been installed.

LEYBURN SPRINTS RESULTS THE Leyburn Sprints proved to be more popular than ever with a big crowd attending the 20th anniversary event last weekend. Dean Amos, driving a Gould GR37 Judd V8, captured his second straight outright trophy.

Amos, from Lismore, put his English-built hill climb special around the 1.0 kilometre Leyburn street course in 42.954 seconds, taking more than a second off his 2014 record. In doing so, he beat arch-rival and 2012-’13 winner Warwick Hutchinson, who was driving a rotary-engine Van Dieman.

The pair had been at the front of the time trials throughout the weekend, with Hutchinson fastest on four runs and leading after the fifth and penultimate run.

While the Brisbane driver failed to improve on his final sprint, Amos laid it all on the line for the fastest time to win by less than 0.8 sec.

WATTLES CLOSING ON MINOR PREMIERSHIP WATTLES are closing in on another TRL Minor Premiership after a solid win over archrivals Highfields last weekend. With only two rounds remaining in the TRL fixtures Wattles, now have a comfortable buffer at the top of the table and will have their sights on defending their premiership.

Wattles looked the better side in the top-ofthe-table clash last weekend, however Highfields pushed them all the way and at the half time the score were locked at 10 all.

In the second half, Wattles looked to step their performance up a gear scoring four answered tries before Highfields hit back. Highfields narrowed the margin to 10 points with 12 minutes left on the clock before Matt Duggan nailed a third try for the match, putting the game to bed for Wattles.

Gatton now sits in second spot on the ladder after their win over Goondiwindi and Highfields have dropped to third spot.

This weekend Wattles play Brothers while in an important clash Highfields and Gatton go head to head at Highfields.

Around the grounds SOUTHERN CROSS BOWLS THIS coming Sunday 23 August will be the Annual General Meetings for both the men’s and ladies’ sections starting at 9.30am. This will be followed at 11am by the combined AGM. It is important for all our members to attend these meetings for the benefit of the club. There will be a barbecue lunch before we play bowls which will be sponsored by the Management Committee. Bowls to start at 1pm.

LADIES SECTION: The S.D.D.L.B.A. Super Veterans Day was held at the club last Thursday morning. It was wonderful to see so many Super Veterans present. Mrs Elsie Clear and Mrs Patricia Collins from the cub were there, and the club was so sorry to receive an apology from Mrs Mary Cunning who was unable to attend.

Warwick East and The Summit also attended. Everyone enjoyed a lovely morning tea before bowls, and a wonderful lunch afterwards. All the Super Veterans were seated at two tables and were able to enjoy the company of other Veterans whom, no doubt, they had played with for many years past.

The next monthly meeting will be held on Friday 11 September at 9.30am.

In the other game, the pairing of Heather Widderick and Grace Howard proved too strong for Pat Schnoor and Val Richardson. The score 2015 in that game.

Some of the Hoop runners have the travel bug at the moment and numbers were slightly down.

Two longer social games were played. In the first game, the final score was a close 13 - 11. Bill Golding scored a jump shot and Dianne Wren top scored with five hoops, which indicates that the remainder of the field was not far behind.

In the second game, there was a bigger gap in the score of 13 -6. Val Fancourt continued her good form, scoring a “hole in one” and Bill Golding made up for his partner’s out-of-form play, by scoring the whole 13 points for that pairing.

There was a good rollup for Gateball on Friday with 10 players out on the green. The opening game was won narrowly by the White team.

The result was reversed for the second game - the final score 14 - 12 in favour of the Red team. The Reds went on to win the final two games. Jenny Tunbridge showed good form to make some good shots for the Whites. Andrea Denkewitz was the pick of the players for the Red Team.

Members will travel to Toowoomba on Thursday where the Toowoomba Croquet Club is hosting a Friendship Day. Gateball will be played and croquet will both be played and players are looking forward to learning more strategies.

WIN FOR MITCHELL SPORTERS stalwart Jim Mitchell took the honours at Sporter last Sunday with a win. In the runners-up spot was another who rarely misses a game, Dick Hilton. Run-downs went to Rod Pettiford and John Rawlings. Aaron simmers had a great day on the course. He picked up the Best Gross and took the Pin Shots on the 12th and 17th holes. Brett Lacey was lucky the Pro Pin was left for his taking. Buster Pettiford and Clarky were seen exiting the building in the company of a meat tray each - we’re assuming they won those as there was not a crowd in hot pursuit. When’s the barbecue boys?

Sporters will tee off at the normal time this Sunday (8am - 8.30am). Why not join them for a great morning of golf and good fun. Visitors are always made very welcome.

COWBOYS GIVE THEMSELVES A CHANCE THE Warwick Cowboys A grade side are giving themselves every chance to make it to the TRL finals and last weekend took another step towards that goal with a thumping 80-16 win over the Oakey Bears at Fr Ranger Oval. In their final Saturday night game at home for 2015 the Cowboys looked the superior team on paper and played accordingly.

Gainey was impressed with the performance of his side naming Ty Gardner as the outstanding player of the match. Gained was also pleased with the performance of full back Craig Donn and winger Brydon Wilson who scored five tries.

The Cowboys also had a big win in the Reserve Grade. After notching up a big lead at half time, the Reserve grade ran away with the game in the second half to win 64-0. Oakey was forced to forfeit the Under 18 game and is a team under immense pressure this season due to declining numbers.

With just two rounds of TRL fixtures remaining, the Cowboys this weekend make the road trip to Goondiwindi to play the Boars on Saturday night in what is a crucial game. The Cowboys will wrap up their fixtures for 2015 with A Sunday home game at Fr Ranger Oval against Highfields the following week.
