Fatal rollover

YARRA Glen Football Netball Club is mourning one of their young players this week, after a car rollover on Sunday claimed the life of 16-year-old Cooper Ratten.

Cooper was the rear passenger in a 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan that veered off Glenview Road in Yarra Glen and rolled, just after 3am on Sunday 16 August, in foggy conditions.

Emergency services were called out to the crash, but Cooper, who received life-threatening injuries in the crash, died on the way to hospital.

Yarra Glen Football Netball Club president Vincent Erickson told the Mail that he and more than 120 others went to the clubrooms on the Sunday, to mourn the under-18s player who had helped his team win against Wandin only a day earlier.

He said the teenager, who recently joined the club, was a “key position” player and described him as a “natural athlete”.

“He had a good set of hands, he was a good mark,” Mr Erickson said.

“Basically, he’d come from fairly good breeding - some of it’s going to filter through, definitely.

“It’s a loss to the club and a big loss to his team - and now they have to go into the finals without Cooper being there.

“It’s going to be tough for them on the field, that’s for sure, and even tougher off the field.”

Cooper is the son of Hawthorn assistant coach and former Carlton coach Brett Ratten, who grew up in Yarra Glen and also played with the club.

Mr Ratten wrote a heartfelt tribute to his son in Monday’s Herald Sun, where he said his son had been “taken away too soon”.

Tanker upgrade

By JESSE GRAHAM DIXONS Creek Fire Brigade will have a brand new $300,000 tanker to tackle fires in difficult-to-reach areas, after a funding announcement last week.

The Victorian Government announced on Thursday 13 August that fire brigades and emergency services volunteers across the state would share in $12.5 million under the Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP) grants.

Dixons Creek Fire Brigade was named as one of these brigades, receiving $100,000 in grants, along with $180,000 in contributions from the CFA. Accompanied by $80,000 in funding from the brigade itself, the $360,000 tanker has been all but confirmed as coming to the station.

When the Mail called Dixons Creek Captain Wayne Morrow, he had yet to hear the news.

“News of the tanker upgrade has made my day,” he said.

Captain Morrow explained that each year the VESEP grants applications open for new equipment, infrastructure or vehicles, and that this year, the brigade applied for a new tanker to replace its Tanker 2.

“Eighty thousand dollars of hardearned fund-raising money is being contributed by the brigade towards the cost of the appliance,” he said.

The new truck will replace the 13-year-old tanker, and will be a fourwheel-drive, as opposed to the current two-wheel-drive, which Capt Morrow said made traversing paddocks and other areas difficult.

“Essentially, we require a four-wheeldrive as it is more suitable for our area,” he said.

“The four-wheel-drive will allow access into paddocks and onto tracks where the existing truck can’t go, and make operations far safer for brigade members.

Other brigades in the Yarra Ranges to benefit from the funding include Belgrave and Belgrave Heights and South brigades, the Dandenong Ranges Fire Brigade, Lilydale Fire Brigade, Olinda Fire Brigade, Mount Evelyn Fire Brigade, Wandin and Warburton Fire Brigades and Narbethong Fire Brigade.

Kids are speaking their minds

By JESSE GRAHAM WOORI Yallock Primary School’s Connor Templeton wowed judges and an audience of almost 100, taking out the top prize at the recent Primary Schools’ Speech Contest.

Connor received the first-place medal for his speech, If I Could Change the World, at the contest held in Healesville High School’s Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday, 5 August.

The contest saw 12 primary school students from schools across the valley deliver speeches on topics from lifechanging experiences, to people they admired and how they would change the world.

Students from Dixons Creek, Woori Yallock, Healesville and Badger Creek Primary School all took part in the event.

The students’ speeches were judged

by Toastmasters members, Linda House, Joy Harte and Walter Skilton, with Toastmasters’ Marlene Sinclair the Master of Ceremonies for the evening.

Organiser of the event, Rotary Club of Healesville member, David Lau, told the Mail that the evening was a success.

“It was very good - there were quite a lot of people in the audience, a lot of parents and teachers and friends,” Mr Lau said.

He said that teachers and principals joined family members and friends to support the speakers, whom he gave “high quality” speeches.

“They spoke very well, very confidently,” Mr Lau said.

Club break-in bid fails

Wanted in servo theft LILYDALE police have put out a public call for assistance after a series of thefts at the BP Service Station in Launching Place with stolen or fake rego plates.

In a series of posts on the Eyewatch - Yarra Ranges Police Service Area Facebook page posted over the weekend, Lilydale police officers have asked for members of the public to help track down the culprits to three separate incidents at the service station.

The first, at 7.30pm on Tuesday 21 July, involved a man putting petrol in his car, which was bearing stolen registration plates.

“Assistance of the identity of this male is requested in relation to the investigation,” the post read.

On Thursday 23 July at 10.30am, a man pumped petrol to his car, which was bearing false registration plates, and drove away without paying.

On Saturday 25 July at 8am, another man tried to pay for petrol with a counterfeit $50 note and drove away in a vehicle with registration plates that do not match his vehicle.

Anyone with information on any of the incidents are asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

WITNESSES are being urged to come forward after a break-in attempt at the Yarra Glen Bowls Club earlier this month.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that between 4pm on Sunday 9 August and 10am the following morning, unknown persons cut padlocks from storage sheds at the bowls club property on Anzac Avenue, Yarra Glen.

However, nothing was stolen in the incident, and anyone who may have witnessed suspicious behaviour at the time is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Remanded over arson attempt A COLDSTREAM man has been remanded in custody after an arson attempt at Crown Casino earlier this month.

The 41-year-old man was arrested in regards to an arson attempt at the Melbourne casino on Wednesday 5 August.

He has been remanded in custody, and is expected to face court at a later date.

Armed robbery witnesses wanted POLICE are appealing for information after an armed robbery at a service station in Chirnside Park earlier this month.

About 1.45am on Monday 10 August, two men entered the BP Service Station on Maroondah Highway in Chirnside Park, armed with a metal instrument.

The two men allegedly threatened a staff member and stole cash and cigarettes.

“The posted speed limit is 80km/h we’re saying the car was well in excess off 100km/h,” Det Sgt Yeoman said.

He said that Cooper was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and was thrown 40 metres from the vehicle when it rolled.

Det Sgt Yeoman said the car involved in the crash had been reported stolen, and that the driver, who was too young to hold a probationary licence, was an “unaccompanied learner”, or a learner driver travelling without a fully-licensed supervising driver.

“It’s not a particularly bad road if you’re sitting on the speed limit and driving to the conditions. “(But) You can be going too fast at 40km/h if the conditions are not right, and that’s exactly what happened - they were driving outside of the conditions and it has had tragic consequences.”

IT HAS come to light that work over the last four years to identify and protect the Leadbeater’s Possum has reaped rewards.

Data obtained last month shows the numbers of possums identified in national parks, state forests, nest boxes and areas previously harvested for timber or burned in the Ash Wednesday fires is particularly encouraging for the future of our state’s faunal emblem.

During the 2009 bushfires alone, an estimated 45 per cent of the Leadbeat-

er’s Possum reserve and 26 per cent of the harvestable ash forest in the Central Highlands were burned.

The previous State Coalition Government recognised the significant impact that fire has had on these important forests, and saw the need to review how the forest was being used and managed.

This was vital if we were to help secure the future of Leadbeater’s Possum and Victoria’s native timber industry.

In government, we began surveying Leadbeater’s Possum in National Parks and State forests to gain a better understanding of the need to protect this critically endangered species.

I am pleased to report that the surveying has produced positive results.

I recently took the opportunity to confirm the success of surveys directing a series of questions to the Minis-

ter for Environment to obtain clarity around Leadbeater’s Possum populations in Victoria.

The data provided from surveys undertaken by the Victorian Government since November 2010 was enlightening.

Since November 2010, 604 sites have been surveyed for Leadbeater’s Possum Victorian national parks and 332 sites surveyed in state forests.

The findings were encouraging with the possum being identified at 152 sites in national parks and 189 sites in state forests.

On top of this, there have been reported sightings from other parties external to government.

What’s more, possums or nesting material was found in 219 man-made nest boxes.

Perhaps even more encouraging is that possums were found in areas harvested for timber in the 1980s, 1990s or areas burnt in the 1983 Ash Wednesday fires.

This evidence challenges a longheld view that Leadbeater’s Possum only lives in the hollows of trees typically found in old growth forests.

That they are found to make nest boxes in their home is a sure sign that efforts to save this critically endangered species are making progress.

Also of note is the contrast between the last four years and the 27 years between 1983 and November 2010, where 548 records of Leadbeater’s possum were recorded.

WARBURTON experienced well above average rainfall in July with 153.5mm according to Warburton rainfall recorder Keith Thomas.

This was against the average for the month of just 116.7mm.

THE Yarra Valley could have its wards meshed into one, with Healesville Action Group pushing for a threeward future for Yarra Ranges as part of a Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) review.

The council is currently being reviewed by the VEC as part of routine electoral representation reviews, which occur every three electoral cycles.

As part of the review, which opened on 5 August, residents are being invited to have their say on how they see the future of the Yarra Ranges in terms of wards boundaries and councillor numbers.

HAG member, John Anwin, said his idea for the council was to have three major wards - one for the Yarra Valley, another for the Dandenong Ranges, and a third for the urban suburbs - each with three councillors elected.

The benefit of this, he says, is that the areas in the three wards have similar interests, such as agriculture or tourism, and multiple councillors would mean better representation of differing views in those areas. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The three areas are quite diverse - all three have got different requirements, different aspirations and different beliefs about what should happen,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Anwin said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think also, because weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all falliable, even the councillors sometimes - sometimes they are very good and balanced, and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let their personal

However, the proposal has come up in previous reviews of the shire, including in 2007, where it was listed as a second preliminary alternative and discussed in great detail.

Of the 23 submissions to the VEC following its preliminary report in the last review, 15 of them supported the three-ward, nine-councillor structure.

VEC spokesperson, Lawson Fletcher, told the Mail that every submission from the public would be carefully reviewed, as long as it fit the criteria.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The VEC will formulate options for Yarra Ranges Shire Council based on a range of considerations, including population statistics and other research, as well as careful consideration of all input from the public in written and verbal submissions received during the review,â&#x20AC;? Mr Fletcher said.

Letters Centre is sight to behold ANYONE who sees photos of Father Cerini and the work he put into making this school would be impressed.

As a recent Warburton resident and a regular walker around the centre, I am very impressed.

The circular design with rooms feeding off seems very modern.

Like most of Warburton, I would like the centre to remain in community hands.

Maybe a ‘pop-up art gallery’ for three to six months, while decisions are being made.

Stall fights cancer IN SUPPORT of the Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day, I will be holding a stall on Thursday, 27 August outside Healesville IGA, and at the Coles complex on Friday, 28 August.

I believe it gives everyone in the community a chance to

remember friends and loved ones who they have lost, and to uphold those persons who are suffering and going through the difficult times of cancer treatment.

I urge the community to support the Daffodil Day fundraiser, so that somebody may have a better chance of recovering from cancer.

Sandra’s yellow hope

By KATH GANNAWAY SANDRA Coulson from Woori Yallock is one of thousands of Victorians who get behind the Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day every year.

Sandra started as a volunteer in Lilydale. When she mentioned to organisers that there was no stall along the Warburton Highway, they gave her the job.

Sandra and supporters have been regulars at the Yarra Junction shopping centre for several years now and look forward

to meeting their regulars, and meeting new people.

They will get their daffodil merchandise from the Cancer Council very soon, in time to have a well-stocked stall on Friday, 28 August.

Sandra said while some people buy a teddy, soccer ball, pen, keyring or other item because they want that particular thing, most buy to support the cause.

“They either have a member of the family, or a friend who had unfortunately been touched by cancer in some way,” she said.

“A lot of people just put in a donation, which is wonderful, and most have a story to tell.

“It’s so lovely to see them when you have seen them the year before - they share what they have been going through, perhaps someone they have lost, or how wonderful a support group has been.

“I would say the majority of people have been, or are, affected by cancer.”

Brain cancer fund-raiser

Ball to stand

By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Glen footballer and LGBTI advocate Jason Ball will take on Liberal frontbencher Kelly O’Dwyer in next year’s federal election, announcing as the Greens candidate for Higgins.

Mr Ball, 27, announced on Sunday, 9 August, that he would contest the seat with the Greens for next year’s election, taking on Ms O’Dwyer, who last won the seat with almost 60 per cent of the total votes.

Speaking to the Mail last week, Mr Ball said that, although Higgins had a strong Liberal vote, he felt that the Greens were gaining ground in inner-city seats.

Asked why he became involved in the Greens, Mr Ball

said that he felt “rejected” by the major parties when he first went to vote in 2004.

“That’s when John Howard voted to ban gay marriage, and was supported by Labor in doing that - I felt absolutely rejected by Labor and the Liberals,” Mr Ball said.

His statement is poignant following last Tuesday night, where Coalition MPs met for six hours to discuss a conscience vote on marriage equal-

ity - only to announce that a free vote would not be allowed for the government’s ministers.

Mr Ball said that his platform would be wider than just LGBTI inclusion and marriage equality, with mental health a key concern of his, as well as providing a positive role model.

“Politics provides me with an even bigger platform to try and be a role model for young people, that I didn’t have when I was a young kid,” he said.

“Growing up as a gay kid in a regional town, such as Yarra Glen - especially in football - I felt very alone.

“I didn’t have anyone to look up to.”

Tale’s twists

By JESSE GRAHAM THE much-loved story of Alice in Wonderland will be played out on the stage at Healesville High School next week, with some interesting twists and turns for those who know the tale well.

Alice in Wonderland Junior will be performed at the high school’s Ion Whykes Theatre from Thursday 27 to Saturday 29 August.

The production brings together 41 students, who will explore Alice’s much-fabled adventure into Wonderland and portray the myriad of characters she encounters along the way.

Director, Tina Haritonidis, said that it would be one of the best productions the school’s students had performed to date - a big claim, considering the quality of previous year’s plays.

“It’s going to be, one of the visually best shows that we’ve got,” she said.

“If you want to have a really good, fun time, come see it, because you’re going to be leaving the show singing and dancing.”

She said the rendition of the story would involve the Cheshire Cat narrating the story

Ms Haritonidis said the production had been in the works since last year, with planning and rehearsals starting in March.

will open with a show to primary school students on Thursday, 27 August, followed by an opening night show at 7.30pm that night.

The show will then be performed from 7.30pm on Friday, 28 August, and from 2pm and 7.30pm on Saturday, 29 August.

Ranges art on show

By KATH GANNAWAY AN exhibition of works by Yarra Ranges artists has gone on show at Mont De Lancey in Wandin.

The Mont De Lancey Annual Art Exhibition, now in its fifth year, was opened on 2 August by Casey MP, Tony Smith.

Thirty-eight works were entered in the competition this year, with judge Gregory Smith from the Victorian Artists Society commenting on the overall quality of the works and providing excellent critiques for the winning artists.

First prize went to Upper Yarra artist Julie Ricketts with her pastel work of a stunning old gum called ‘Still Standing’.

Sandra Dare from Mount Evelyn was awarded second prize for ‘Indian Princess’, also a pastel.

Mark Phillips’ work, a fruit study in oil, earned him the third prize encouragement award.

Mont De Lancey spokesperson, Jill Sebire, said they were thrilled with the exhibition, presented beautifully in the Ray Oliver Gallery.

VIETNAM veterans and their families gathered at Yarra Junction on Sunday to commemorate the 521 Australians who died in the war.

The annual Yarra Valley Vietnam Veterans’ Day Combined Service recognises also the 3000 wounded who have in the past, and many who still do live with the fallout of the war and its aftermath.

As guest speaker, Vietnam veteran and RSL Victorian State Branch senior vice-president Robert Webster recalled his experiences, conscripted from a day-to-day civilian life to join his regular army brother on the war front.

In an informative and entertaining recount of his own experiences, he touched on not only the surreal nature of being thrown into a war for those whose numbers came up in the ballot, but also on the throw-away attitude of the defence forces on their return.

Casey MP Tony Smith also spoke, saying a nation would never again treat their servicemen and women in the way the Vietnam returnees were treated.

Local, state and federal government representatives, RSL sub-branches and other affiliated organisations laid wreaths in memory of those who didn’t return, and veterans and members of the public placed poppies in remembrance.

The event is an initiative of the Vietnam Veterans Community, Outer Eastern Melbourne Sub-branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia and the RSL sub-branches of Yarra Glen, Healesville, Lilydale, Mount Evelyn, Upper Yarra, and Warburton and the National Serviceman’s Association.

Ekiden relay challenge The original concept of the race hearkens back to Japan’s old communication and transportation system in which stations were posted at intervals along the road.

In the race, each runner on a team runs the distance from one ‘station’ to the next, and then hands off to the next runner. Held on an uncompromisingly tough course at Anglesea on Saturday, Yarra Ranges athletes excelled with some outstanding individual and team performances.

Standout performances were the team wins for the Men’s Division 4 and Women’s Division 4 teams.

THE return of the Ekiden relay to the Athletics Victoria season was welcomed by all Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes.

The term ‘Ekiden’ originated in Japan, although the concept of a long distance relay race is not unique to any country.

The first ‘Ekiden’ race was run over three days between the old Japanese capital of Kyoto and the modern capital of Tokyo, a distance of 508km, to celebrate the anniversary of the moving of the capital to Tokyo.

As written in Japanese, ‘Ekiden’ combines the characters for ‘station’ and ‘transmit’.

Somerville respectively, the teams were never headed with both teams winning, finishing over four minutes ahead of second place.

Other outstanding runs on the day came from Lochie Scully, James Laven and from Under 14s athletes Jayden Clarke, Zac Clarke and Jayden Eagleton.

Wednesday 12 August: STABLEFORD: In a welcome return to the club (and to form), Phil Garside amassed a most impressive 39 points to win the daily comp on Wednesday. Phil had a nasty car accident some months ago and sustained a few serious injuries. All supporters are pleased to see him back and ‘firing’ on all cylinders now. Runner-up to Phil was secretary extraordinaire, Graeme-Johnson (37 points).

Ball-count went down to 34. The nearest the pins were Kevin-Conway (3rd) and KimKennedy (10th). Great to see young Kim back, gracing our course with her exquisite game.

Saturday 15 August: PAR: Winner on the day was another young tyro, Jon-Cross, with an excellent +4. With a handicap of 4, this means Jonathon shot a par 69 on the tricky layout; great shooting, young man. Runner-up was Darryl Chapronaire, with +1. Darryl also snared the nearest the pin on the 3rd. Other nearest the pin winners were Barry-Maltman (5th), C.H. Brown (9th), Lynda Dickson (12th) and perennial winner, Willo, on the 15th.

Next week is the Yarra Ranges Athletics cross-country presentation fun day at Lilydale Lake.

A fun day of relay running and awards will complete another successful and enjoyable winter cross country season.

Be at Lilydale Lake from 9.45am on Saturday; bring a chair, an appetite and a smile.

Honeycombe leads at Healesville tennis AT the 126th annual general meeting of the Healesville Tennis Club, Beth Honeycombe was again elected as president, with Christine Wittkopp as secretary and Irene Leonard as treasurer. Two valued members were elected as life members.

Congratulations to Kathy Cameron and Peter Brown for achieving this honour. They will be presented with their Life Membership badges at a function on Saturday 5 September, at 6.30pm in the clubrooms.

Juniors’ finals step up THE Under 12s Girls headed to Mount Evelyn to try to cause another upset in the finals race. The girls put in a great second half, but the damage had been done by Mount Evelyn in the first half.

Mount Evelyn went into the long break with a 46-point lead.

The girls outscored Mount Evelyn in the third quarter, but Mount Evelyn ran out winners by 59 points.

This was the first season of football for most of the girls and the improvement of all players has been fantastic to watch over the season.

Emily McKie coached the girls this year and was ably supported by Izak Daniel.

In the other game, the Healesville Under 12s took on Gembrook-Cockatoo at Wandin in pretty good conditions, and it was heated from the outset.

Having had the week off, both teams were pretty keen to get the upper hand early and earn a spot in the grand final.

With some good centre work, Gembrook had the better of the first quarter and a bit.

Healesville started to get more of the ball towards half time, and with an even contribution across the ground, gradually got on top in the second half.

It was a high pressure, competitive match from start to finish, and Gembrook really served it up to our team.

The team responded well and will take a lot out of the experience.

The Under 12s now look towards the grand final in two weeks.

By JUDY ORREN DIVISION 1 SENIORS Wandin 20.11 (131) d Monbulk 12.8 (80) WANDIN remains undefeated after another good performance, this time a 51-point win over Monbulk. The first quarter was quite tight with Wandin leading by just eight points at the first change.

Wandin only put on four goals in the second term, but they held Monbulk to just one major to take a 25-point lead into the main break.

The second half was of pretty high quality, and Monbulk did give their all but Wandin was just a touch more classy going forward, and they made it count on the scoreboard.

Wandin added another 11 goals to their total while Monbulk was by no means disgraced as they added seven goals to their total, but it was Wandin’s class that shone through that ultimately got them their victory.

Warburton Millgrove 18.12 (120) d Upwey Tecoma 9.10 (64) The first half was a beauty as it went goal for goal and there was only two points separating the sides at half time, with Warburton holding the narrow lead. The third term was where Warburton got right on top as their running game was too much for Upwey to contain. Warburton slammed on 6 goals to 1 and by the last change they held a 30-point lead. Warburton continued its hard running in the last term and finished off in great style, booting 6 goals to 2 to win by 56 points in one of their best performances of the season.

Healesville 8.10 (58) d Olinda Ferny Creek 7.9 (51) This was one hell of a strange game, but it was Healesville that was able to hold on to win in a close one. Healesville started the game in great fashion booting five goals while holding Olinda to just one behind in the first term. Olinda bounced back in the second, scoring four goals while holding Healesville to just three points, and at the main break it was Healesville by seven points. The third term didn’t see a goal scored in what was a battle of the backlines, both sides could only manage four points apiece which saw Healesville maintain their seven-point buffer.

The last quarter did open up a little as goals were scored by both sides, but it was Healesville that was able to answer any challenge Olinda threw their way, with both sides booting three goals which meant it was Healesville that saluted come final siren.

Woori Yallock 18.16 (124) d Mount Evelyn 8.13 (61) Woori was too good from start to finish as they put in a very good four-quarter performance that Mount Evelyn just couldn’t match. Woori only led by 14 points at the first change, but they really got their game up and going in the second quarter as they booted six goals while holding Mount Evelyn to just four behinds to take a 48-point lead into half time.

The third quarter was pretty even and Mount Evelyn did match it with their opponents as both sides booted four goals, but Mount Evelyn just couldn’t reduce the deficit to be of any real threat.

The last quarter did see Woori control the play as they booted an inaccurate 4.8 to 2.1 to come away with a pretty healthy 63-point victory.

Belgrave’s lead had only increased to 35 points by the final change. Belgrave finished this game in great fashion as Yarra Glen looked to run out of legs. Belgrave hammered home nine last quarter goals to Yarra Glen’s two to blow the margin right out and come away with a quality win, thanks to a quality last quarter.

DIVISION 2 SENIORS Powelltown 16.10 (106) d Alexandra 9.13 (67) Powelltown has had a decent win against Alexandra as they prepare themselves for an elimination final against Seville next week. Powelltown had a terrific first half as they booted a very accurate 11.2 to 3.7 to lead by 43 points at the long break. The third term saw Alexandra show some real grit as they forced their way back into the contest with a 4-goal-to-1 term to trail by 28 points at the final change to still have a sneaky chance. Powelltown did steady in the last and although they didn’t dominate play, they were able to control the tempo. They booted 4 goals to 2 to win well and should go into next week’s final with confidence.

Emerald 15.16 (106) d Kinglake 7.4 (46) Emerald looks set for a good finals campaign as they finish the home and away season on top of the ladder after a dominant performance over Kinglake who now finish third on the ladder. The first quarter was a real arm wrestle with neither team able to mount any real attack, with both sides only managing one goal for the quarter.

The second term did open up and goals started to come, with Emerald having the better of the play scoring 6 goals to 4 to take a 16-point lead into half-time. The third quarter was another tight one, but Emerald was able to stretch their lead marginally out to 21 points at the final change. Emerald was great in the last quarter as they didn’t give Kinglake a sniff. They held Kinglake scoreless while they booted 5.9 and really should have won by more than the eventual 60-point margin. Emerald will now have a week’s rest, courtesy of finishing on top while Kinglake will take on Thornton Eildon next week in their first final.
