There are two ways to get involved. You can nominate someone who deserves to be celebrated or even yourself. We want to hear about mums who volunteer, dads who mow the local football grounds, sisters who raise funds for a local cause or brothers who spend their weekends coaching local sporting teams.

Fisher to end chamber presidency

River before second jury NOOSA Council is calling for submissions as the second Community Jury gets ready to tackle the Noosa River.

NewDemocracy Foundation has selected a new group of 24 local residents who will form Noosa’s second jury.

The new jurors were drawn from the residents who responded to council’s randomselection invitation mail-out in November last year.

They’ll meet for the first time on 22 August, which is open to the public, and will spend five months developing recommendations as to how Noosa River can be better managed, the role council should play, and the resources it should apply.

Noosa Council community engagement manager Debra Bambrook said the process enabled the community to help define council’s role in managing aspects of Noosa River.

“For example, the proliferation of abandoned and derelict vessels on the river and their environmental and visual impacts, so that our muchloved waterway remains clean and healthy for future generations,” she said.

“It’s a complex issue with implications for both state and local governments, and all residents are encouraged to have a say. It’s as easy as making a submission for the jury to consider.“ NewDemocracy Foundation executive director Iain Walker said documents and

CCIQ Noosa president Sarah Fisher has announced she will stand down at the coming CCIQ annual general meeting in September.

Ms Fisher has been leading the chamber’s drive to encourage smart local growth for the region as well as engage local business owners to join the growing membership base.

Ms Fisher said she was very proud of the progress CCIQ Noosa had made during her two years as president, but it was time for her to focus on her business.

“I’m excited of where (the chamber) is heading,” she said.

“I had a fantastic team on the management committee who were brilliant at working together to achieve great things.

“But, my business needs me here. The chamber is going great guns and I’ve had a blast these past two years.”

Current vice-president Peter Chenoweth is expected to stand for election and Ms Fisher said she would offer her full support.

“I do believe Peter Chenoweth would make a fantastic president, should he be elected at the AGM, and I would certainly give him all my support,” she said.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIQ) offered their congratulations to Ms Fisher describing her presidency as highly successful.

“CCIQ would like to thank Sarah for her two years in the role and standing up for small business in Noosa,” CCIQ CEO Stephen Tait said.

WELL I see Gary Bright of Noosaville had a shot at me re my recent opinion piece regarding the development extensions proposed for the Noosa Civic.

Mr Bright suggests the letter writer Ian Lawson and myself “believe that all development is good development, and Noosa should become more like everywhere else”.

He then goes on to call the then Noosa Council “stupid” for allowing it to be built there in the first place.

Then to top it all off, he compares Noosa and the Civic to areas in Europe and USA who he says “has many of the big shopping centres closing down”. And to wrap up, his analysis pontificating that on-line shopping and the desire for more personalised shop-

I can only say this in response, my article was not about the Civic and more relating to what Noosa and its residents need to address as we look to the future.

The only problem I’d have, every time I wanted to watch a movie, buy clothes, go to a hospital, or most other normal things I would have to drive south.

I just wish people could take some time and have a look at how and why local sport thrives here.

Yes we’ve got the climate and our state government and councils have done a great job in financing our terrific facilities.

But it’s the passion of locals who give their time to put teams on fields week in and out, 12 months per year.

These officials, referees, board members, volunteers and fundraisers go about their roles to help give kids a good start in life, and personally to just be part of something good.

They don’t create boundaries and know they can only guide the future.

I would love Noosa to remain as it was, that way I would be living at the Beach House on Hastings Street, surfing, playing golf, eating at the local snack bar, and walking the National Park with a few others.

G’DAY and once again greetings from the Doonan Rural Fire Brigade. On the heels of my last article and with Fire Season now officially upon us, I thought another reminder and information package would be worthwhile for all of us that live out in the Hinterland.

With the majority of our brigade’s coverage being close to bush, or literally within it, surrounded by an abundance of trees, scrub and grassland, I thought it appropriate to direct our readers to the Prepare Act Survive Campaign.

This is a national initiative to encourage people to think about their Bushfire Plan before they see flames or even smell smoke on the wind.

If you are still not convinced of the need for prior planning and family discussion, take a look at “When the Fires Come“ (available on YouTube). This video was produced by the CFA in Victoria after the Black Saturday Fires.

It is based on the thoughts and experiences of real people who lived through those fires.

So what has your local brigade been getting up to?

Well, over the last month volunteers have been training hard both individually and collectively, plus liaison training with the Eumundi Brigade.

We also had an enjoyable night out with partners at our annual Christmas in July gettogether at the Rump House, Tewantin.

Along with other brigades from the Coast the brigade has supported the Parks and Wildlife Department in a mitiga-

tion burn around Peregian.

Last, but by no means least, the brigade has attended a number of genuine fire calls, one of them in support of the Urban Brigades where though the ending was traumatic for the owner, losing home, equipment and livelihood, it did not end in a tragic loss of life.

However, this incident once again highlighted the need for fitted, tested and working smoke alarms.

You can purchase an approved and reputable one at most hardware stores which are easy to fit and maintain.

One should be located near all sleeping areas.

Any Fire Brigade member or Fire Warden would be happy to provide advice if you are still unsure of the practicalities.

Reserve looks to do more Biosphere group opens the doors THE new Noosa Community Biosphere Association (NCBA) is calling for members as it begins a grassroots, “we the people” drive for guiding local growth.

The biosphere association is an eight member steering committee under the Noosa Biosphere Foundation and is looking to expand its membership base so the committee can work with the community on projects.

Association committee member John Wood said the committee aimed to collaborate with existing hard-working community organisations and local residents to develop projects relevant to those who live and work in the Noosa Biosphere.

“Many very important activities are going on around our natural environment by

our dedicated environment groups,” he said.

“The NCBA intends to work in a complementary role on many of their projects. As a community association, we believe we should also focus on the ‘living in our Biosphere’, so NCBA plans to coordinate and develop projects for smaller citizen groups as well.”

Mr Wood said there is work to be done to improve the people-based side of living sustainably in the Noosa Biosphere through increased social and economic prosperity for local residents.

“This means creating career opportunities and innovative jobs in the context of a smart economy and not simply low or no skill jobs,” he said.

Mr Wood said Noosa needed a more stable and diversified economy that encouraged a focus on wellness industries, knowledge-based and technology businesses plus sustainable farming to increase well-paid job opportunities in the shire.

“The NCBA seeks to increase and widen the economic capacity our Noosa Biosphere has to offer as a clean, green environment by promoting our sustainable agriculture, hinterland tourism, eco-friendly businesses and food processing opportunities.

The foundation has “triple bottom-line aspirations” Mr Williams said including enhancing the environment, realising the shire’s economic potential and engaging the community.

Under a three-year agreement, Noosa Council has provided the NBR foundation with an initial $250,000 from its environmental levy to support proposals that conserve or improve biodiversity.

It has provided a further $80,000 from general revenues for proposals that foster economic and human development and $40,000 to meet the foundation’s initial

establishment costs.

Noosa Council CEO Brett de Chastel said the funding is part of Noosa’s new Noosa Biosphere Reserve governance arrangements, begun with appointment of a new Board of Trustees in February this year.

“The foundation grants program is not meant to replace the council’s community grants scheme which remains in Noosa Biosphere place for other projects,” he said.

Organisations eligible for funding include community associations and NGOs, education and research institutions and business groups and enterprises from the rural, urban, social, production and conservation sectors.

Government departments or agencies, political or religious organisations, private businesses and individuals are not eligible for grants.

Private businesses and individuals with innovative ideas are encouraged to collaborate in developing expressions of interest with a community group or not-for-profit organisation.

Activities intended to generate commercial profits are not eligible for grants.

The Noosa Community Biosphere Association is calling for members.

THE recently formed Noosa Biosphere Reserve foundation is calling for big ideas to further Noosa’s conservation and environmental standing.

The foundation is calling for eligible groups to lodge expressions of interest for grants to develop significant and innovative conservation proposals.

NBR chairman Scott Williams said the Noosa community had fought for more than 50 years for high environmental standards in the shire’s natural and built environments.

“UNESCO acknowledged its successes when Noosa Shire and its coastal waters were designated a biosphere reserve,” Mr Williams said.

“Now the foundation wants more done for the environment and we’re looking to the community again for significant ideas and projects.

“We want proposals that will reduce environmental impacts, ensure sustainability and enhance Noosa’s environmental credentials.

"They could be improvements to the way things are done in the region, or to fix problems created in the past and we hope the broad Noosa community will be the engine room for these big ideas.”

Expansion debate is missing the mark LOCAL debate about the proposed Noosa Civic expansion is missing the mark, according to Noosa Shire Residents and Ratepayers president, Brian Stockwell, who is calling for higher order employment in Noosa.

According to Mr Stockwell, it’s not about the prospect of more supermarkets and the potential competition for small businesses that NSRRA is most concerned about, it’s what the community stands to lose in terms of the potential for higher order employment opportunities.

Mr Stockwell said he held concerns for the outcome of the expansion if the applicant, the Queensland Government’s investment arm, “has its way and is allowed to ignore the statutory master plan over the site”.

“What everyone seems to be missing is this is a State Government entity that owns land which is zoned for offices, research and development and technology,” he said.

“The State Government is no doubt the largest single consumer of such premises in the state, with numerous knowledge workers arms that could be relocated to Noosa.”

“NSRRA has done our research and found out that the Noosa Shire area has the lowest rate of State Government employees of any council area in South East Queensland.”

Mr Stockwell said data from the Public Service Commission showed only 1.5 per cent of Noosa’s population was employed by the State Government compared to the SEQ average of 3.5 per cent.

Picture: Karina May “I know from my time as a senior manager in the government there has been sizeable movements of staff out of the city to Ipswich and the Gold Coast in the not so distant past, and there is a clear case for Noosa to press a claim for the same opportunity,” he said.

“In NSW, they moved the head office to the Department of Primary Industries to Orange, so why not move the head office of National Parks Sports and Recreation to Noosa - it would be an excellent fit. Or perhaps a research arm of government which is struggling to find high quality staff who may be attracted to the Noosa lifestyle?”

Mr Stockwell said NSRRA was

going to seek the support of the three local State Government members to advocate “decentralisation of an appropriate unit within government to Noosa”.

“The Shire Business Centre is an excellent site, but so too is the vacant State Government industrial area in Cooroy,” he said.

Mr Stockwell’s comments come as public submissions close for the proposed expansion.

More than 100 submissions were received by council through the Your Say portal, with CCIQ Noosa, Noosa Junction Association and the Noosa Homemaker Centre just some of the submitters.

“Thank you to Unity Water for seeing what I saw, an old disused building that could be turned into something far more beneficial to the community,” he said.

Noosa Men’s Shed is a place for retired men to come together to share skills, experiences and build friendships.

At the opening, Noosa Men’s Shed president Peter Magarry shared how much the space and organisation means to him.

“I personally find it very rewarding that people want to come to a place and have a good time, good friendships,” he said.

“I’ve got eighty friends I didn’t have a year ago.

That’s a pretty good thing to be able to say.

This allows the group time to invest in the facilities, such as building the wood workshop.

The workshop cost almost $30,000 to build, with $13,500 being supplied by

grants from local organisations including Bendigo Bank, and the group managed the raise the rest of the funds through fund-raising with local businesses helping with supplies and construction being completed by members.

Workshop co-ordinator Ian Broadfoot thanked everyone for their support.

“We are especially grateful for the contribution of skills and materials made available by friendly trades people and local businesses that helped us contain the cost,” he said.

Ian also spoke about the real purpose behind having

the workshop.

“It’s not all that important we build great woodwork here, although I expect some will be produced,” he said.

“It’s much more important we build friendships that help others. As woodwork co-ordinator it is my wish we stay safe, make good use of the facilities and in this digital age thrive in the company of all the other analogue men.”

The Men’s Shed association started in 2007 with the purpose of providing a support program to improve men’s health and wellbeing. There are now 960 sheds nationally and over 150,000 men are involved.

Locally, the Noosa Men’s Shed started in June 2014 with 50 members and has now grown to 85 members.

Along with the wood workshop, they also have computer training facilities, raised vegetable gardens, bee-keeping and the coming metal workshop and arts and crafts facility.

They meet from 9am12pm on Tuesday and Thursday mornings as well as Wednesday afternoons.

Its time for the 25th annual St Thomas More fete on Saturday 15 August.

Fun at the fete THE St Thomas More school fete is back this weekend with a whole day of fun, food, rides and raffles on Saturday 15 August.

The fete started as a car boot sale 25 years ago and to celebrate the milestone a brand new car will be raffled off this year.

Debate heats up I SEE that the global warming alarmists are at it again (Dr Richard Koerner, Noosa Today, 30 July) - playing the man and not the ball. Whenever an eminent scientist like Prof Bob Carter points out the fallacies in the IPCC theories on anthropogenic induced global warming, backed up by hard facts, the alarmists immediately attack that scientist but do not attempt to disprove the facts so presented. They don’t, because they can’t. So their only alternative is to attempt to cast aspersions on the character

and expertise of the scientist.

The IPCC’s whole theory on global warming is based on climate modeling, which has been show to be wanting time and time again.

The climate is too complex to model so the modelers have to make wide ranging assumptions to make their models give them the answers they want - garbage in, garbage out. This was clearly shown in Figure 7 of the presentation of Des Moore.

Geoffrey Cousins did nothing to dispel the above. He did not accept that Prof Carter was in fact a scientist and virtually accused him of lying. Not an iota of proof supporting the anthropogenic global warming hypothesis just a tirade of verbal diarrhea against those scientists who dare to show up the IPCC for the charlatans they are.

This is a challenge to all those global warming alarmists, play the ball and not the man and prove their hypothesis and not just fall back on that tired defense of “the science is settled" - it

If not the case, maybe Mr Nuske would care to put his hand up for election to council next year - even for mayor perhaps - and thereby apply his own management experience in rectifying the council’s present failings for the benefit of all ratepayers.

Where are the positives?

WE have bought our property at Sunrise beach about 18 months ago, fulfilling our dream of 30 years, when we first came here and said “one day ..."

Every week we look forward to the local paper and read it cover to cover. One regular in the letter section seems to be J.N. (Jeff Nuske) from whom we are yet to read a positive comment. This week it’s about Noosa Council (again) and their, in his words, “disappointing result of scheduled capital works in the current financial year, resulting in an underspend of $9.04 million".

I must say that this is the first time I have heard anyone complaining about an “underspend" by any government, local, state or federal. Could it possibly be that scheduled works, whatever they were, have not been completed last year, because of the many rainy days we have had during the year? And perhaps those remaining works weren’t important enough for the council to waste funds calling in contractors, as J.N. suggested the council should have done?

Wherever council can perform a set task itself, council should. To our mind, any money saved last year, be it calculated or by “accident" can be spent on extras this year? This used to be called budgeting, not a “lack of management control". Perhaps if J.N. could, upon “close ex-

Increase the mix Regarding the debate on the Noosa Civic expansion I believe we do not need any more supermarkets or discount stores at the centre. I believe the only retailer that the Noosa area is missing out on is a department store with locals needing to travel to Maroochydore, thus taking retail dollars out of the area. As an alternative to retail, the expansion should encompass a business headquarters of an insurance or IT company for example, to provide local jobs.

I love music, all genres.

2. What has been the most memorable moment of your life to date?

My last trip to Italy sampling Tuscan Chianti and enjoying the amazing Italian hospitality. I also loved the Venetian waterways in Venice, and celebrated my birthday in Cornwall and then travelled on to the magnificent Highlands of Scotland.

3. What do you like most about living/working in Noosa?

I love the climate and clean pristine beaches, plus the wonderful local produce - which in turn finds its way into some of the best restaurants in Australia from right

here in Noosa. I also love having my own agency with a team who are extremely professional and dedicated while maintaining a necessary sense of fun and good humour.

4. Where do you think Noosa property prices will go over the next few years?

Prices will continue to rise as people from near and far recognise the benefits of living in this wonderful part of Australia.

5. Where is your favourite part of Noosa and why?

The Noosa River because it’s great for walking along with my Groodle, Mamie, plus having coffee, meeting a wealth of new people including travellers and locals, plus enjoying the stunning vistas.

I have been in sales for over 40 years and a greater part of that time spent in the corporate sector as national sales

The most memorable sale was Platinum on the River. The vendors were lovely and realistic and it was such a marvellous property. The sale was a great outcome for the vendor and buyer.

Safe and healthy children worldwide.

“Research conducted by Core Logic found property values continued to climb higher across Australia’s combined capital cities in June, suggesting property demand remains strong,” he said.

“Across the combined capital cities, dwelling values were up 2.1 per cent over the month of June - taking total growth for the 12 months to July to 9.8 per cent.

“Rising property values is indicative of strong demand for dwellings. Property values in Sydney and Melbourne continue to rise month after month, suggesting demand for dwellings in these capital cities is robust.”

But while demand for owner-

Speaking about this result, Mr Flavell said he wasn’t surprised to see a small drop in the value of investment loans written given that so many of Australia’s lenders are currently making sweeping changes to their investment lending policy and pricing.

“A lot of lenders are making a lot of changes at the moment, and this will no doubt serve to keep some potential investors on the sidelines,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the people these changes are affecting are the mum and dad investors and first time buyers who are choosing to purchase investment properties before owneroccupied properties.”

Moving forward, Mr Flavell said he wouldn’t be surprised to see a further drop off in investment lending activity as the changes that Australia’s lenders are making to their policy and pricing continue to filter through to market.

Shape's a good fit for new mums NOOSA Council has consulted with new mums to help shape a proposed Get Out, Get Active fitness program for women with young children and is now calling on local organisations to join the push.

The future program will link local mums with free or low-cost fitness activities to keep them active following child birth.

The council's community development officer Amanda Tie said being a parent took stamina, and exercise could certainly help parents cope with the 24/7 demands of being a mum.

“This program aims to help mums with young children to get active and stay active,” she said.

“We’re asking local mums with children under three years of age

to tell us what activities they might like to get involved in to get, and stay, active.”

The council took submissions from local residents until yesterday (12 August) to help shape the new Active Mums program, for the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing’s funding consideration as part of the 2016 Get Out, Get Active initiative.

“Part of the submission is to partner with organisations to improve the opportunities for women to get active,” Ms Tie said.

“So we are also looking for organisations interested in working with the council to help deliver free or low-cost sport and active recreation activities specifically suitable for new or recent mums.”

Noosa Council is calling on local organisations to help create a health and fitness program for new mums.

Ceramic artist Elke Lucas will open her studio this weekend.

Guaranteed to blow your mind IT’S thunderbolts and lightning and very, very frightening but it is just possible that the spirit of the most charismatic and flamboyant front man in history, Freddie Mercury, has taken up residence in Brisbane actor and musician Johnny Blunt.

The lead singer started Killer Queen in 2003 and it has been racking up fans ever since becoming Australia’s longest running Queen tribute act.

Already an experienced and versatile performer, Johnny Blunt decided to pay homage to the greatest rock act of all time.

He added a hot band of Queensland’s best session musicians, a wardrobe of detailed and exactly replicated costumes, a stage presence second to none and thus was born The Killer Queen Show.

Because he bears an uncanny resemblance to Freddie Mercury, some audience members have commented on what they saw on stage was Freddie’s ghost.

From the moment that Johnny steps foot on stage, Freddie’s very essence is alive again and it goes further than that as all members of Killer Queen bear a very real and eerie resemblance to the original band.

But, hauntingly similar appearances aside, they also play like the original band, which is no small feat!

The Killer Queen Show performs live with no backing tracks, just as Queen did back in the day.

SLOW Food Noosa will tonight (Thursday) host a fund-raiser to help send one of its youngest members to the We Feed The World festival in Milan this October.

Jennepher Bucher from the award-winning Maleny Cheese has been chosen as one of four people to represent Slow Food Australia at the international event that will bring together thousands of young people from all over the world to discuss the future of food and farming and to think about the future of our food system.

The 27-year-old said she recently joined Slow Food Noosa after being encouraged by her customers at the Noosa Farmers’ Market.

“As a local producer, I am particularly interested in working with farmers, producers and customers to assess the future food needs and how we can meet them together,” she said.

Pension planning Seeking financial help

IN THE last budget, changes were announced to the way the Aged Pension is calculated.

Holman McGregor Financial Services planner and director Rob McGregor said the changes can affect those who have or are about to retire.

“The changes will come into play in January 2017 and will result in a reduced age pension for many retirees,” he said.

Rob said two types of retirees will be affected; couples who are homeowners with more than $300,000 and up to $1.1 million in assets apart from their family home; and singles who are homeowners with more than $250,000 and up to $800,000 in assets apart from their family home.

“For non-homeowners, the numbers are higher,” he said.

So how much will they be impacted? Rob said if you fit into the above categories, or will when you retire, it’s best to do your own calculations, which your adviser can help with, but below he outlines two examples.

A retired couple who are homeowners with $800,000 of assessable assets will be around $13,000 worse off per year, while a single retiree who is a homeowner with $500,000 of assessable assets will be around $8000 worse off per year.

When it comes to financial success, most people fail. No one sets out with that as the plan, but let’s have a look at some recent statistics from the ABS. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 25 per cent of people are forced to retire by circumstances including ill health or disability, while 10 per cent of people are forced to retire because they lost their job or can’t find work.

According to the figures, 44 per cent of people retire because they reach the pension age, which is now 67, and less than 10 per cent of people retire because they have enough money to live the life they want.

So why do most people fail? There are lots of reasons including leaving retirement planning too late, not having enough information or, more recently, too much information, plus distraction.

We also find people procrastinate, putting off their retirement planning, or spending time looking for get-richquick schemes, which usually end in get-poor-quick.

So what can you do if you are in the firing line? Rob said its best to first seek professional advice from an expert who may suggest some of the following depending on your individual situation.

“Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should,” Rob said.

But some possible solutions include the following: - You can do nothing and just spend less, or you can do nothing, spend the same and run your retirement funds down quicker.

- You can review your investment strategy and attempt to get a better return that will make up for your lost income (be careful here - get really good advice), or you could gift funds to help you qualify for more (once again be careful).

- You could spend money on your home, which then

counts towards the asset test or you could buy a more expensive home to allow you to qualify, possibly with a plan to sell and downsize at a later stage.

But Rob warns, individuals should think carefully and get good information and advice before doing anything.

“Your response should be carefully thought out and fit into your total retirement plan,” he said.

“If you don’t have a plan, it may be worth getting one and if you do have a plan, it will need reviewing.”

Noosa in a haul of medals for masters

By RICHARD MURRIHY NOOSA teams have dominated the Queensland Masters Softball Titles finishing with a gold, silver and fifth place.

The Noosa Rebels White took all before them as they went through the rounds with four wins and a tie before winning the final 11-1, the second gold in two years.

They all contributed in what was a very good all-round team effort and were rewarded with four players in the all-star team Ky, Dave S, Dave F and Forest.

Simon took two amazing catches on the final day in the outfield and Richard Wakeham’s effort to pitch out the final on one leg was a stellar. The men were coached

by Cookie who did a great job, and Kim W did a great job scoring.

The women Noosa Beeches team went through undefeated in the rounds but lost the final 9- 8 in the last innings in what was a great game. Three players made the Allstars team - Cassie, Leanne and Rosie. Sue and Meredith had a hard job with all the injuries and balancing the team.

Steve hit a grand slam and Dennis smashed one out of the park during

the final playoff games.

Jenny Clifford did a great job coaching, managing, scoring and chaperoning some of the players with a wonderful result for Noosa.

It’s back to Caboolture this weekend to start the finals and Noosa has all four teams playing so pack the family up early and get down and support them.

Pirates face off in match of the year IT was the game of the year as the two Junior Pirates Under-7 Rugby League teams came face-to-face in round 19 action.

Both sides were on top of their games and it was a tight tussle from kick off until the full-time hooter.

It was all about defence.

Both sides were desperate with try-saving tackles at both ends. For White, Cooper Ward ran the ball hard and straight and Jai Bruggy never stopped pumping his legs

with each hit up.

Hayden Anderson was Yellow’s player of the match scoring a try with some sensational running as he pushed through the defence.

OTHER RESULTS: Under-8 Yellow against Kawana Dolphins, who were a class above on the day however, the intensity was sure impressive.

Under-10 Blue played Coolum and put in a very solid performance.

While line speed was a bit slow in

the first 10 minutess, once they got going they did not let up.

Under-10 Yellow played at Coolum in a high intensity and sometimes willing match.

Under-11 Blue didn’t come away with the win against Kawana White at home, but the boys showed how good they are against a benchmark Under-11 side.

Under-11 Gold played their first week of finals at home against the Beerwah Bulldogs. The game was

an arm wrestle right to the finish, with Noosa the eventual winners.

Under-13 Gold went into their Saturday clash against Beachmere’s Pelicans at Beachmere aware of their fast key players and strong attack. The score 54-12 reflecting a small amount toward the game, it was Noosa’s determination and firey attitude that made the game.

Under-14 Blue went down but the boys showed a lot of character and skill.

NOOSA Dolphins Junior Rugby Union Under-11 Fins starred in slippery conditions to defeat the Eumundi Dragons 53-5.

With an early start time in slippery conditions the Fins took a while to warm up and really get going.

The teams were still close after 10 minutes before the Fins moved through the gears to dominate the rest of the match with the backline linking well, neat passing and powerful runs.

Tryscorers for the Fins were Jarrah Charlesworth (3), Josh Whitehill (2), Lockie Dudgeon, James Gelling, Joe Siemon. Conversions - Jarrah Charlesworth (3), Lockie Dudgeon while Donnie Meadows was player of the match.

The Under-7 Reds also braved cold conditions to put in a spirited display against the well-drilled Eumundi Dragons 70-55.

Both teams traded tries with only a couple of simple errors proving the difference between the teams.

Man of the match Harry Robson starred with an eight try haul but his performance was set up on the back of a strong defensive game from Noah and Will.

Darcy found open field but was pulled up just short of the line and Zac’s goose step was put to good use as he bamboozled defenders with ease, and as usual Conor tackled his heart out.

The Under-15s Noosa 21 defeated SCGS 7 in a tough encounter.

A hard- fought first half saw Grammar score first and hold the lead until just before half-time.

Handling proved tricky in the Friday evening conditions for both sides. The boys were tenacious and piled on the pressure in the second half to score two more tries to remain undefeated leading up to the finals in a few weeks.

LIVETODAY The Australian longboard and logger titles at Coffs Harbour last week, part of the two-week Australian Surf Festival, saw some excellent results for Noosa and environs, and particularly for the Noosa Malibu Club. Hot club junior Nic Brewer took out the Under 18 logger final, while Peregian’s Craig Davies took the Over 40s logger, with clubmate Wally Allen also a finalist.

Libby Day is no stranger to dementia, having nursed her beloved mother, Molly, until her death a year ago. Molly might be gone, but the charity Libby established in her honour, Molly’s Song, lives on, raising awareness and funds for dementia research.

Living in a bubble WHEN you read this I’ll be in an even colder place, visiting my dear old Mum, quite likely for the last time. She won’t know I’m there, of course, just as she fails to recognise my sister, who sees her every day, or the mates that she sits with and fingerpaints or watches television on the days when she’s strong enough to be lifted out of bed and wheel-chaired downstairs.

Mum’s brain has been shutting down for several years now, but the process has escalated over the past couple of months.

She’s forgotten how to eat or take a shower, to make conversation or comb her hair. The bubble she lives in is now so tiny that it seems to be crushing her, and with every passing day she looks tinier and more frightened by life.

My mother is reaching the final stages of dementia.

Having destroyed her thought processes, this awful disease is now telling her body it can’t function, despite her relatively good physical health.

As sad as it is to watch her decline, Mum has had nine good decades and lived a full and happy life.

If she was capable of rational thought, I’m sure she would be thinking enough is enough. What is even sadder is the early onset dementia that is beginning to affect friends of my own generation, just as they enter the so-called “golden years”.

It’s something I think about every time I forget my intended purpose when I walk into a room.

Out of reach WE CAUGHT up with some dear friends for dinner last week and into the third bottle, conversation turned to the latest round of cliches and misuses of the language that we are subjected to.

Of course, sticklers for correct English are fighting a losing battle.

I’ve almost given up on unique (a state that by definition cannot be qualified) and let the apostrophes fall where they may.

Social media, particularly in its (no apostrophe) most abbreviated forms, has a lot to answer for, but when teachers and ABC newsreaders lead the way, you know the language is in trouble.

But language, like culture, evolves, and maybe we just have to let it go.

Nevertheless, my pet hate at the moment is reaching out, as in “I wanted to reach out to you about borrowing a cup of milk because we’ve run out”.

I’m not sure whether this one came to us from church (maybe Christian Outreach?) or America, maybe a bit of both.

The first time I can remember hearing it was in California about half a dozen years ago when a particularly earnest fellow actually grabbed me by both arms as he reached out to me verbally about my needing to put on a blue rashie for the next heat.

Now I get reached out to at least half a dozen times a day.

Whatever happened to “ask”?

Anyway, we had a dinner to die for, and going forward let’s hope this visit wasn’t

Noosa Springs’ golf services manager Warren Ellis said it was encouraging to see Ladies Day well supported locally and garnering increasing interest nationally.

Sunshine Coast golf clubs were well represented: Noosa Springs, Peregian Springs, Pelican Waters, Twin Waters, Noosa Golf Club (Tewantin) and Mt Coolum plus major national clubs: The Australian Golf Club (Sydney), Torquay (Victoria), The Grange (SA) and Royal Hobart (Tasmania).

Following the Single Stableford, the women revived with a champagne lunch, laughter, a fashion parade and presentations.

Congratulations to Fay Layton who won first place with a score of 38 points on countback.

Micah’s a star

By PETA HOLMES NOOSA Eagles White Under-6 soccer goal-keeper Micah Elvy was the star as they went down to Buddina Darts in a hard-fought came 3-1.

Micah showed no fear as he launched himself at the ball to save lots of goals and took out an award from Buddina Darts for Best and Fairest.

Charlee Owen’s focus on the ball saw her make some great runs down the field and Adler Lenitschek, our little pocket rocket, again covered the whole field in both defence and attack.

Eli Robinson dominated the Dart’s goal with lots of near misses.

Kiri Todhunter took some great shots at goal and came away with the coach’s trophy and an award from Buddina Darts for Best and Fairest.

Will Holmes was good in support and took out the Hot Shot Sport Award for the week.

Noosa Under-7 Gold defeated the Buddina Eels one-nil at Brightwater Park.

The only goal was scored by Ty Oakley - his first ever goal, up over the heads of the other team to surprise them.

Player of the match went to Archer Ward with some really big kicks. The whole team defended well.

Under-10 Noosa Gold played against Currimundi Hammerheads at Currimundi.

Noosa lost five-nil. Player of the week was Hunter Baistow.

Tigers turn up the heat

JASON SHERRIFF The Fiona Winter Realty Noosa Tigers took on fifth placed Moreton Bay on Saturday. Even though Noosa cannot move out of third position it was an important game.

This is the second last game for the year and Coach James Gellie would be eager for the boys to get all the structures right and have winning form going into the finals.

The Tigers made six changes from last week’s loss to Maroochydore with all but one due to injury.

Out went Jesse Malthouse (shoulder), Brett Duke (soreness), Jed Mullens (groin), Caleb Isles (back), all due to minor niggles and in need of a week off to recover while Lachy McLarty (knee) will have surgery this week to repair a torn meniscus and Seb Rogers was sent to the reserves to recapture his early year form.

In to the senior side came, Zac Smith, Matt Gray, Riley O’Dwyer, and Mark Reilly plus two debutants, 17-year-old Rhys Tarling and Kodi Wulff.

The day go off to a slow start as Moreton Bay reserves forfeited and left no curtain raiser for the main game. The seniors got underway in perfect conditions but it didn’t start perfectly for Noosa as Morten Bay won the early ball and controlled the early stages of the game.

In a scrappy first quarter, Moreton Bay kicked the first goal and pressured the Noosa ball carrier and made Noosa look second rate.

Noosa skills by hand and foot were at times deplorable as they missed targets and missed shots on goal.

Noosa had managed seven behinds while Moreton Bay had kicked two goals before a clever Corey Boardman roved the pack inside the Noosa 50 and kicked Noosa’s first to edge closer on the score board but as the siren sounded the underdog Moreton Bay held a three point lead in a game that was hard to watch. Moreton Bay 2-4-16 to Noosa 1-7-13.

Photo: Jess Divito If you were within 2kms of the Noosa Football ground, you would have heard James Gellie’s quarter time speech. It was loud and directed at every single player and the main message was stick to the team structures or you will be out of the team.

This had an effect as the midfield lifted through Nick Hill and Brent Moloney and leaders such as Robert Copeland and Isaac Hughson got on top around the ground. Noosa had kicked three goals to one in the first 20 minutes before a few changes were made from the coach’s box.

Mark Reilly went deep forward with Matt Gray and Zac Smith and Sam Dwyer given jobs across half forward. This seemed to work as Noosa slammed on another three goals in time on to really take the game away from Moreton Bay, who were working hard but not getting the results on the scoreboard. At the main break an inaccurate Noosa held a 32 point lead. Noosa 7-14-56 to Moreton Bay 3-6-24.

At the main break Noosa had to home final Sunday, while the U15 boys had a big win of 120 points in a tune up for the finals they play at Bribie this week.

If they bring the form from the past few weeks they will go deep into the finals.

The U15 girls finished with a loss and fifth spot and missed the finals by one spot.

The last quarter began as the third quarter finished with Noosa winning the clearances and contested footy. Rhys Tarling was good all day and slotted home his third goal early in the last quarter. Brent The U13 blues showed they still can compete against the big guns but had a loss this week and will host Kawana at Noosa for a prelim final berth, while the U13 reds had a two point win in a thriller at Bribie and get to go to Northshore to continue their quest for glory this week.

Moloney, who was moved to the forward line, kicked three goals in five minutes - two from outside 50m for strong contested marks and the other was a creative snap on the run from 30 metres. The midfield was right on top in the last quarter with Zach McDonald and Lachy Cameron giving the midfielders first use and back six were relentless though Gary Wallace and Wayne Wilson as they kept running the ball out whenever Moreton Bay entered their 50. Noosa banged on 11 goals to Moreton Bay one goal in a great display of football.

Noosa ran out comfortable 135 point winners. Noosa 24-24-168 defeated Moreton Bay 4-9-33.

After a slow start Noosa really clicked into gear after quarter time and everyone at Weyba Road hopes this continues over the next month.

Next week The Fiona Winter Realty Noosa Tigers take on Aspley at Weyba Rd in Noosa’s final game of the season in round 18. Noosa have a bye in round 19 to get all the injuries fixed before the final series begin. performance kicking 19-9-123 to 0-1-1; these kids are the future of Noosa so it is great to see them play like this.
