CHANGES to planning rules that would pave the way for intensive farming in Green Wedge zones may come too late for a Yarra Ranges freerange pig farmer - if they come at all.

A VCAT decision in July has ruled that the operation of Happy Valley Free Range Pty Ltd in Wandin is defined as ‘intensive’ animal husbandry, and as such does not comply with the Yarra Ranges Council planning scheme.

The decision could affect farmers in Green Wedge Zones 1-3 which cover parts of Wandin North, Silvan, Monbulk, Coldstream, Gruyere, Macclesfield, Belgrave South, Sassafras, Narre Warren East, Yellingbo and Hoddles Creek.

Happy Valley owner, Jo Stritch told the Mail last week the ruling had hinged not on the amount of food brought onto the farm, which had been her understanding of the criteria, but on the nutritional value.

VCAT Deputy President, Helen Gibson, said the free-range nature of the pigs’ activities was not a determinative factor in whether the use was intensive or extensive animal husbandry.

She said it was the source of food that supplied the animals’ primary nutritional needs, rather than the volume of food, that had to be considered.

As Ms Stritch got set to work through the compliance issues with Yarra Ranges Council, Liberal Member for Evelyn, Christine Fyffe, weighed into the debate, raising the issue in State Parliament last week.

She warned that changes needed to be made if the right to farm was to continue in Yarra Ranges.

Mrs Fyffe called on the Minister for Planning to appoint an independent panel to look at Yarra Ranges Council’s proposed Amendment C146 which, if adopted, would bring in a permit system for intensive free-range farming in the Green Wedge zones where it is currently prohibited.

Briefly Bushwalkers tracked down MONBULK police are asking budding bushwalkers to carry travel provisions in case of emergency, after seven people lost their bearings in Kallista over the weekend.

Monbulk Police Sergeant Mark Knight said at 4pm on Sunday 9 August, the seven people were visiting the Sherbrooke Forest near Grants Picnic Ground.

The group, which included a four-year-old, were missing on the bush tracks for about two hours and became distressed as the sun set and the area became colder.

Sgt Knight said that one member of the group had a phone and was able to stay in constant contact, but that it had still been a “nightmare” to track them down.

Using police Air Wing and six police officers based at the picnic ground, the group was located on Newmann Track about 6pm and taken out of the bush by four-wheel-drive.

Sgt Knight said it was important that bushwalkers had a “thorough knowledge” of the areas they are exploring.

“Speak to Parks (Victoria) regarding maps and things like that, and make sure they carry their phone with them,” he said.

Man served intervention order

A RICHMOND man has been slapped with an intervention order after a domestic incident resulted in a house flooding in Ferny Creek.

Olinda Police Sergeant Andrew Herdman said at 12.50pm on Tuesday 28 July, a couple were driving along the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road in Ferny Creek, when the man tried to pull the driver’s wheel to make the car pull over.

Sgt Herdman said the pair were arguing at the time, and the Richmond man wanted to pull the car off the road to talk with the driver, but instead swerved the car into a roadside fire hydrant.

The hydrant burst from the impact, and the water then flooded the area underneath a nearby house, which took several hours to drain.

Sgt Herdman said the man was interviewed for conduct endangering persons and received an intervention order.

Charges laid over crash

Remanded over burglary A DANDENONG man has been remanded in custody after a burglary in Montrose last week.

At 9.45am on Tuesday 4 August, two people are believed to have broken into a Moore Road property in Montrose, stealing items from inside the house.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said the offenders were sighted leaving the property in a vehicle, which was reported to police.

Police then located the vehicle in Wantirna, with one of the alleged offenders - a 35-year-old Dandenong Man - inside.

Police arrested the man, charged him with burglary and theft and remanded him in custody.

Ring found, owner sought POLICE at Mount Evelyn are looking for the owner of a ring that was handed into the station on 2 August.

Leading Senior Constable Mark Lancaster of Mount Evelyn police said they were very keen to find the owner of the jewellery.

The ring, found on York Road in Mount Evelyn, has an inscriptions on it.

Anyone who has lost any jewellery is urged to call Mount Evelyn police on 9736 2473.

MONTROSE resident Ina Johnstone, 94, is a keen gardener who has a garlic bulb she has now grown for more than 50 years.

This month, Mrs Johnstone passed on her 50-year-old cloves of garlic to the Sarah Court Preschool community as they prepare for the Healthy Harvest Festival next month.

The bulbs were planted in the preschool’s vegetable garden and shared with families interested in starting this tradition in their own backyards.

Mrs Johnstone has lived on Sarah Court for 50 years and in Montrose for 70 years.

Her garlic tradition started over half a century ago, when she made the decision to split one bulb in half after it had dried.

Mr Johnstone replanted half and used the other half for both eating and sharing with others.

“Gardening has given me so much joy over the years, and I have most enjoyed it when I can share my love of gardening with others,” Mrs Johnstone said.

“I am so delighted that Sarah Court Preschool was interested in keeping my garlic growing.

“I hope it can be shared for another 50 years.”

Olinda Police Sergeant Andrew Herdman said on Friday 31 July, a car carrying three tourists came off the road on Ridge Road in Mount Dandenong near Osprey Road, crashing head-on into a power pole.

A passenger in the rear of the car received extensive facial injuries from hitting the headrest of the chair in front of them, requiring ambulance assistance.

Sgt Herdman said the passenger was taken to Maroondah Hospital, and the other two occupants of the car came away with sore wrists from the airbags.

“It was just a case of not paying attention,” he said.

“Just drive to the road conditions.”

Emergency services contacted the power company to inspect the pole, which had been dislodged by the crash.

Tim’s sleeping rough all right

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS LAST week was Homelessness Prevention Week and saw former Yarra Ranges Mayor Tim Heenan spend his 100th night sleeping rough to raise awareness of the issue.

While his campaign is based in Lilydale and is helping Holy Fools to raise money for a dropin centre, homelessness is a condition that affects people across the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges.

The Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS) offers help to people at risk of falling into, or already in the grip of homelessness.

Tania Bevan is manager of DRERS and says homelessness is as much of a problem in the Dandenong Ranges as it is in other communities.

“It’s definitely an issue in our area,” she said.

“Risk of homelessness is a definitely an issue.”

DRERS assists many people who are facing troubles with housing stability, regularly helping people with food, blankets, swags, access to a hot shower, referrals, advocacy, myki topups, medical assistance and more.

Ms Bevan said there were many factors that contributed to homelessness and people in the Dandenong Ranges were not immune to these issues.

Preschool prepares for milestone

By PETER DOUGLAS EMERALD Preschool is putting the finishing touches on preparations to celebrate its 60th anniversary next month.

As with so many historic institutions, there are countless incredible stories behind the scenes and this preschool is no different.

Therefore, preschool coordinators are seeking assistance from the community to help make it a memorable

event, either through submitting photographs or coming forward to help identify people in old images.

Kate Drummond, from the preschool, said there was a rich history, with several longserving staff members still living in the community.

The preschool has its origins in 1952, when a play group was formed at the Emerald Mechanics Institute Hall.

However, it was not until

September 1955 that the Emerald Preschool first opened its doors, originally known as the Nellie Exley Pre-School Centre.

The late Mrs Nellie Exley instigated the forming of the preschool.

“Not having a home or a safe place is often the product of circumstances beyond their control.”

“Losing employment, or under-employment, family breakups - it could be drug or alcohol issues or gambling. There are so many different problems can lead to homelessness,” she said.

Ms Bevan described the link between homelessness and mental health as a chicken-andthe-egg situation, where one might lead to other.

“Mental health is definitely a factor and once somebody is homeless it’s a factor in most cases.”

“One could imagine being homeless is a great strain both physically and emotionally on a person,” she said.

DRERS helps people who may need emergency assistance for a variety of reasons, but Ms Bevan said the problem of homelessness in the Dandenong Ranges had grown a little over the last few years.

“A snapshot of our clients since the first of July 2015 to today has us reporting that exactly two thirds of our clients are homeless, or having difficulty paying their rent which, without our assistance may place them at risk of homelessness.”

According to Homelessness Australia 22,789 people are homeless in Victoria, a rise of 20.7 per 10,000 since 2006.

Emily kicking goals for our young female footballers

Now they're a life-saver EMERALD U3A, Emerald Lions Club and Emerald Co-operative have just taken delivery of three life-saving Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs).

Under the guidance of Ambulance Victoria, the defibrillators will be housed in each of the group’s clubrooms.

They will be on hand in the event a club member or some-

one in the vicinity suffers a cardiac arrest.

The U3A branch, and its membership of about 240, would like to thank Emerald Lions for the generous financial support to this venture.

The group said they would rather the situation where the defibrillator needed to be used didn’t occur, but, as Ambulance

Victoria has stated, many lives have been saved by a quickthinking member of the public via the application of a defibrillator.

Ambulance Victoria recommends a four-step procedure in the event of cardiac arrest: ring triple zero; initiate CPR; apply the defibrillator; and apply advanced care (paramedics).

HEALESVILLE go-getter Emily McKie has been rewarded with a $10,000 scholarship for her work with junior female footballers.

In an incredible achievement, about 200 junior girls from the Yarra Ranges region are now regularly participating in the sport, in part due to Ms McKie’s efforts.

Her efforts have included co-ordinating competitions and helping to establish teams at Under 12s and Under 16s level.

On top of all that, she also coaches a Healesville-based junior team and fulfils a role with AFL Victoria, which includes fostering junior participation.

Subsequently, she has been named winner of this year’s LGPro Sally Isaac Memorial Scholarship.

The award is offered for women 35 years and under, who demonstrate achievement and commitment to improving community life.

Ms McKie, a Carlton fan, said it was an honour to receive the award.

“Being involved with sport is something I’ve always enjoyed,” she said.

“I like to ensure all kids get a chance to participate in sport.”

Ms McKie was selected from a pool of nine nominees, whose efforts had seen positive changes across Victoria through local government programs.

Presently, Ms McKie is fulfilling her role with AFL Victoria and plans to complete a Bachelor of Teaching, with a focus on outreach and community education.

The Yarra Ranges community has benefited greatly from her work, which has included establishing teams in Healesville, Yarra Glen, Ferntree Gully, Mount Evelyn and Healesville.

Ms McKie said she couldn’t

be happier in her role with AFL Victoria.

She said some of the benefits had included chauffeuring around some modern-day stars, including former Collingwood star, Luke Ball.

The scholarship was established in memory of Sally Isaac, who died too young in 2009 after a 12-month battle with cancer.

Ms Isaac worked with the Victorian Local Governance Association, before joining Yarra City Council in 2003.

Another challenge for Grooby family

By JODIE SYMONDS MONBULK youngster Rachael Grooby, 9, and her family are still facing an uphill battle to obtain a much-needed registered assistance dog.

Rachael was diagnosed with epilepsy and vision impairment to her left eye at age six and, earlier this year, was also diagnosed as suffering from severe migraines.

In another challenge for the family, Rachael was also recently diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome.

‘The Mail’ reported two months ago that Rachael and her family were seeking assistance in acquiring a dog for Rachael.

Mum, Belinda Grooby, has been busy fund-raising for five weeks and has raised $3000, but still has a hefty $22,000 to go.

“An assisted dog for Rach would make it so much easier for her to just be a child,” Ms Grooby said.

“The dogs are trained to help her anxiety levels and to help keep her safe.”

The $25,000 needed will cover the 18-month training of the assisted dog, so that Rachael is able to go to school and do all of the things children should do.

“I can’t really explain how an assistance dog would change her life, it’s difficult to put into words,” she said.

“Rach’s world is getting smaller and without the help of the assistance dog, I don’t know how she will

cope with the world around her.”

The Grooby family is still trying to come to terms with the news that Rachael has Asperger’s.

“All any parent wants is to have a healthy, happy child,” she said.

“I can’t change the cards we have been dealt, but I can do everything in my power to help her.”

Meanwhile, Chirnside Park’s Jaydah Warford was diagnosed with a brain tumour four years ago.

Sadly, she passed away on 10 February this year, but the Jog for

Jaydah/Run for Rachael event will celebrate the life of little Jaydah, and give Rachael Grooby the hope she needs.

Organiser of the event, Cathy Skinner said she wanted to create a memorial day for Jaydah and raise funds for someone else in the community.

“This year it will be a fun run in Chirnside Park,” Ms Skinner said.

Ms Grooby said the community support had been great.

“Monbulk is an amazing place to live and our community lets us

know we aren’t alone,” she said.

“We wouldn’t be able to raise the funds without them.”

Feedback sought on fire plan DANDENONG Ranges residents are now able to view their 2015-'16 Fire Operations Plan (FOP), which identifies planned activities to reduce bushfire risk.

Local communities have assisted the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and Parks Victoria fire management teams to develop the FOP, which is part of a three-year rolling plan to reduce bushfire risk this coming summer and beyond.

The FOP is being displayed this month at www.delwp.vic.gov.au/news-and-announcements/fire-operations-plans, before it is finalised late next month.

The plan includes details of proposed planned burns and other fire protection works like mulching, slashing and fuel break maintenance on public land for the greater Melbourne area.

DELWP District Manager Metropolitan, Dan White, encouraged residents to take action.

“We want locals to view the plan and understand the operations scheduled near them,” he said.

“The plan has been developed using local knowledge of the landscape, input from communities and uses bushfire modelling to target high-risk areas.

“If you’re near areas with a known bushfire risk like the Dandenongs, your involvement has and continues to be a critical part of our planned burning program.”

It’s been quite a journey through which the school has travelled since its earliest days back in 1986, where it started in a hall in Wesburn, before moving to its picturesque location in Yarra Junction. It’s now a well established K-12 school retaining its community feel and beauty so characteristic of Steiner education.

The management structure at the school is not one encoutered in more traditional settings, in that there is no principal role at the school, but rather various responsibilities are held by different individuals. This year Mount Lilydale Mercy College celebrates 40 years of co-education. In response to a request from the Catholic Education Office to meet the growing demand for boys’ secondary education in the area, the Sisters of Mercy were approached and agreed to change what had been a girls’ day and boarding school since 1896 to become a Year 7 – 12 coeducational secondary College. Darren Trippett Since joining Yarra Hills Secondary College in 2012, College Principal Darren Trippett has overseen the largest transformation in the school’s 53 year history. Darren came to Yarra Hills with over 25 years’ experience, much of that in leadership at the acclaimed Vermont Secondary College. In 2007, Darren was individually recognised as a ‘High Performing Young Leader’ by Professor Brian Caldwell, former Dean of Education at the University of Melbourne, being chosen to represent Australia in the International Network for Educational Transformation, International Conference in Beijing, China. After initially assuming the Campus Principal role at the Mt Evelyn Campus, Darren soon moved into the position of College Principal, which he has held for the last two years. In his time at the helm, Yarra Hills has completed a $20 million rebuild of the Mooroolbark Campus, as well as significant improvements at Mt Evelyn. Along with this, a renewed focus on school values, aspirational goals and ground breaking online curriculum development has led to great interest in the school from the local community. Indicative Year 7 enrolments for 2016 are at the highest level since 2002, with similar demand for existing spots in other year levels. Darren says “I believe that we have a great deal to offer prospective families, and we are working hard to continue to improve in all areas to become the school of choice for the local community”. He says it is certainly challenging, but a very rewarding experience seeing the school transform under his guidance.

As I write this article our school is writing tributes to an amazing educator Jean Krumtunger who passed away earlier this week. Jean was principal at our school from 1996 to 2005 and for the past four years has volunteered her time to teach science to all our students on a Tuesday. Our students loved her and they loved learning about science. Jean has been an inspiration to our students, one they will not forget. She has also inspired our staff and the entire Sassafras Primary School community past and present. Jean will not be forgotten.

I am very proud to be the principal of Sassafras Primary School and to be following in the footsteps of such a special role model. Darrelyn first came to Cockatoo Primary School as a graduate teacher in 1975.

After teaching here for a year Darrelyn went to Croydon Primary School from 1976 until 1982. In 1983 Darrelyn commenced teaching at Silverton Primary School until her return to Cockatoo Primary School in 1986. Over that time there have been significant changes to the school. ‘Baddest’ rock dads in Belgrave

By PETER DOUGLAS BELGRAVE singer-songwriter, Seamus Anthony, was waiting at Selby Primary School to pick up his daughter when it struck him the Hills area was full of ‘rock dads’.

But not just any rock dads musicians with loads of talent.

So he spread the word and, with three other local dads, formed folk rock band Creatures from the Bog. Incredibly, the band is now set to release its debut seventrack EP at Sooki Lounge in Belgrave on Friday, 14 August.

Anthony said his musical mind quickly began to tick over.

“Looking at my fellow ‘tree changers’, with their tattoos and dreadlocks, and hanging

about the school waiting to pick up their kids, I thought, ‘I bet there’s some serious musical talent going begging here’,” Anthony said.

“And seeing as I had a bunch of road-tested songs in need of some rock power, I put the word out via the local parents scene.”

Guitarist Jarra Bullen was recruited directly from among the primary school parents, but Anthony discovered drummer Peter de Weijer nearby his home.

Anthony already knew bass player Rob, then from Menzies Creek, via the local flower industry.

Since forming in late 2013, and debuting at Belgrave’s End of the Line Festival, the band has quickly gained a reputation

as ‘the baddest dads in Belgrave’.

However, the band has its eyes set further afield than just the Hills.

Anthony has a long history in the inner-city scene, having shared the bill with artists like You Am I, Tea Party, The Mavis’s and more recently, Dave Graney.

“We’ll be hitting the road with this EP for sure, but first we’re ‘gonna’ show the Hills kids how it’s done,” Anthony said.

The band will launch their EP on Friday 14 August at Sooki Lounge in Belgrave with special guests, all-girl rock band Tequila Mockingbyrd.

Creatures from the Bog will start at 9pm. Entry is free.

Vikander delivers a riveting performance of elegant precision as the android Ava.

She portrays a being that is undeniably sentient, yet at the same time strikingly nonhuman.

You find yourself wondering if this AI is manipulating the human characters, which adds another layer of intrigue.

An eerie, evocative character study, Ex Machina is an extraordinary achievement in the science fiction genre.

Ex Machina will be playing at the Healesville Memorial Hall from August 13 to 19, and at the Warburton Arts Centre from 27 August to 2 September.

By PETER DOUGLAS BELGRAVE’S Sooki Lounge will this month play host to a local act that possesses an abundance of musical talent.

Local ska exponents, Loonee Tunes, who reside in the Upwey and Belgrave areas, are returning to the venue on Saturday, 22 August.

The band has previously gathered a strong local following at the venue.

In the past, Loonee Tunes has consistently connected with the Sooki crowd, filling the dance floor on every showing.

Singer and ringmaster, Adam Timms, said he worked hard at livening up the proceedings, regularly leaving the stage to join the sweat-soaked audience for dancing and singalongs.

Timms said he enjoyed the connection with the crowds.

“The Loonee Tunes sound mixes ska, pop and mod influences, while their stage presentation is filled with energy and humour,” he said.

“At the band’s last Sooki gig on Anzac Day, punters came in their multitudes and definitely got their money’s worth

- the dance floor was packed throughout both sets.”

At the 22 August gig, they will be joined by new act, Melbourne City Ska Collective.

The band has only a few gigs under their (many) belts, but their enthusiasm for classic ska tunes is infectious.

According to Timms, the band is looking forward to their first Belgrave show, “even if a few members might have to hang from the rafters to fit in the available space”.

WAS there ever a better time for aspiring young cricketers to step up for Australia?

MILO Cricket is a great introduction to cricket for boys and girls from five to eight years of age with the emphasis on fun, building skills and developing a love of the sport.

Wandin Junior Cricket Club is running the MILO program and is also looking for players for their Under 12, 14 and 16 cricket team for the 2015-’16 season.

The club has an impressive history, starting in the mid 1870s, but it’s been hard work at times keeping the numbers up.

The club had no juniors for a few years, but started to rebuild two years ago when with the help of the Wandin-Seville Bendigo Bank they fielded an Under 14 team.

This year they are hoping to get Under 12s and 16 teams up as well.

Kiara, 9, on state duty

By JARROD POTTER IN THE midst of a golden cross country season, Kiara Flavel could add even greater accolades to her trophy case later this month when she runs against the rest of the nation.

Running has been her favourite way to move since she can remember as Flavel, 9, started going for little runs around home with her grandpa Jeff ... when she was four.

“There’s a track down the hill and Pa was out running, and I started running with Pa and ran all the way home,” Kiara said.

“My mum then thought I should get into running as I looked like a good runner and went to little aths.”

She started her golden season last month at the School Sport Victoria state cross country finals, where the Emerald Primary School running machine powered through the two-kilometre Bundoora Park course in 7.06 minutes to take gold.

“I liked the school one the best - at the start we were all together, but then I was front nearly all the way,” Kiara said.

“I felt pretty good and proud of myself.”

Backing up the following week, Westerfolds Park became the next domain of her cross country success as she won her third consecutive Little Athletics Victoria State Cross Country Championships gold medal.

With two elite gold medal performances in her recent form, it’s no surprise Kiara was picked by School Sport Victoria to represent the state and battle it out against the rest of Australia and even some New Zealand runners at the upcoming national championships.

Kiara will don the Victorian jersey at Mooney Valley Racecourse later this month and is immensely proud to not only represent her state, but also her school.

“First time getting into the Victorian team - I feel pretty good because I’m really representing Victoria and sort of representing my school too - Emerald Primary School,” Kiara said.

“I think I’m going to do pretty good.”

Kiara’s running competition won’t be able to get away from her once cross country season finishes either, as the Emerald dynamo also relishes the flatland competitions on track.

She is the current under-9 Victorian state record holder for the 400m and 800m and hopes to continue her strong form this summer when she adds the 1500m to her ever-increasing repertoire.

“I like doing both (track and cross country running),” Kiara said.

“I’m a middle distance runner and I get to do the 1500m this year.”

The School Sport Australia Cross Country Championships run from 28-31 August.

Smith appointed as new Speaker

By JESSE GRAHAM CASEY MP Tony Smith has been elected as the 30th Speaker of the House of Representatives in Canberra.

Mr Smith, who has held the seat of Casey since 2001, was voted in to the role with 51 votes to 22, in a partyroom meeting on Monday 10 August.

Speculation was rife in the week leading up to the vote on who may take over from former Speaker Bronwyn Bishop, who resigned amid an expenses scandal, with Mr Smith the frontrunner for the role.

After being dragged to the chair, as is tradition, by Deakin MP Michael Sukkar and Robertson MP Lucy Wicks, Mr Smith told the Parliament that he would give all members “a fair go”.

“I want to say at the outset, I will give a fair go to all on the floor of this chamber,” he said.

“But, in turn, I do expect a level of discourse that reflects that.”

He said discussions in Parliament should be “robust”, but not “rude” or “loud”, and

that he sought to improve the manner of debate on the House floor.

Mr Smith said that, with his taking up of the new role, he would not attend weekly Liberal partyroom meetings, which had been a point of contention under Ms Bishop’s speakership.

“It is my view that the speaker should not only be, but should be seen to be, independent of the partisan day-to-day fray,” he said.

“I think the decision is symbolic but also practical.”

Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, Melbourne Greens MP Adam Bandt and a number of other members made speeches congratulating Mr Smith on the role, with the latter expressing that Mr Smith had the Greens’ “full support”.

Mr Abbott was one of the first to congratulate the new Speaker.

“As the Speaker, you, sir, are the custodian of the traditions of this House,” Mr Abbott said.

“Your job is to maintain order in this House, by commanding the respect of both sides of

the chamber.

“I am confident, based on our friendship and comradeship going back some quarter of a century that this is exactly what you will do.”

Mr Shorten said that Mr Smith would bring the opportunity to restore “a role of independence to the job of Speaker”.

“Serving as Speaker is a privilege, not a prize - a responsibility, not a reward,” he said.

“You can make this a place where straightforward questions get straightforward answers, where the speaker manages debate without seeking to participate in it.”

The Mail contacted Mr Smith’s office last week, with questions about his potential Speakership, including whether he thought he would still be able to fairly represent the electorate of Casey if he took up the role.

Speakers, by tradition, are supposed to be independent of party politics.

However, neither Mr Smith nor a representative from his office responded to the Mail before deadline.

Crystal clear victory for a very dynamic duo

DESPITE the arctic-like cold and muddy conditions, Yarra Ranges athletes turned out in droves to face the fresh and challenging inaugural Coldstream Cross Country Challenge.

The special event - featuring obstacles, challenges and a slip-n-slide finish - was held to celebrate the highly successful Cross Country season, which has produced many high quality results and countless personal bests.

Despite the adverse conditions, the faithful Yarra Ranges Athletics family embraced the event and, from the smiles on their faces, showed it was a success.

Thanks go to all who offered assistance and support to the event, ensuring its smooth running.

This round of Yarra Ranges Athletics Cross Country was untimed and placed due to the relaxed nature of the event and the new course.

There will be no club XC next weekend. The next event will be the crosscountry presentation day on Sunday 23 August.

The seniors will be in action in Anglesea for XCR Round 8, competing in

ON Saturday at Emerald Golf Club, the sun was shining brightly, but, unfortunately, not on the course, although the big wet had passed.

The competition was South African fourball, where there were teams of two and the scores were calculated by multiplying the stableford scores on each hole.

Once again it was Peter Glasscock (12), ably supported by his sidekick, John Carvill (18), who elbowed their way to the top of the podium.

They came in with a total of 72 points for a clear victory.

A countback had to be applied to two teams with the same score.

After the brains-trust had ruminated for some considerable time and two beers, it was announced that Bobby Kennedy (18) and Mark Starick (12) got the second gong.

The beaten pair was Leigh Morison (17) and Ken Hill (18) who played well but not good enough to even get a whiff of a cigar.

The other pairs all had excuses but none that would stand up to efficient scrutiny.

Ian Scott (29) was second on 37 while Gerran Wright came in one back with 36 and a third place.

Next Saturday, Olinda Golf Club and Emerald Golf Club face off for the annual challenge to see who has the last laugh.

Ten players from each club will be paired off to play the match play format to see who rules the course.

Healesville led by just two points at the first change and by just five points at the main break. Healesville broke the shackles in the third quarter and, despite all Warby’s hard defensive work in the first half, they just couldn’t maintain that effort. Healesville booted 7 goals to 1 to race to a 44-point lead at the final break. The last saw Warburton battle out the game to the final siren, and they did in fact outscore Healesville 4 goals to 2, but it was always going to be a Healesville victory.

Monbulk put in a good four-quarter performance to run away with a 52-point victory over Belgrave. Monbulk led by 10 points at quarter time and then stretched that out to 35 points at the main break after a 6-goal-to-2 second term. The third quarter saw both teams score three goals, but it was Belgrave that had their chances to get back into the game. However, they were wasteful as they also booted seven behinds and Monbulk’s lead was 29 points at the final break. Monbulk finished full of run in the last as they booted 5 goals to 1 to win comfortably.

Wandin set up their victory in the first quarter as they jumped out of the blocks and slammed on 8 goals to 1 to stun Mount Evelyn and led by 42 points at the first change. Mount Evelyn was a lot more competitive in the second term as they matched Wandin, with both sides scoring three goals apiece for the term. Wandin pulled away in the third as they really went on the attack. Mount Evelyn took something away from the game in the last as they managed to outscore Wandin 4 goals to 2.

Upwey looked to be up and about early as they led by 17 points at half time after a 7-goal-to-4 opening half. Woori Yallock regrouped at halftime and came out to play a more accountable brand of football as they slowly gained back control. They booted 6 goals to 2 for the quarter to turn their 17-point deficit into a 9-point lead at the final change. The last quarter was a tough battle, but Woori was able to withstand any challenge as they booted 2 goals to 1 to win by 15 points.

They booted 6 goals to 2 in the opening term and followed that up with a 6-goal-to-1 second quarter to be 59 points up at the main break. Olinda went on their merry way in the second half, adding 15 goals to 4, with 10 of those goals coming in the last quarter.

Emerald was a dominant force as they completely outplayed Alexandra. They booted nine first-quarter goals while holding Alexandra scoreless. They then booted 11 goals to just 1 behind in the second term to lead by an incredible 125 points at the main break. Things didn’t get much better for Alexandra in the second half, although they did manage to put three majors on the board. However, Emerald added another 14 goals to win and walk off the ground with a massive 209-point win.

A good all-round four-quarter performance from Powelltown as they put Yea away to the tune of 90 points. Powelltown led by 19 points at the first change and then really upped their work rate in the second term, booting 7 goals to 1 to jump out to a 60-point lead at the main break. The second half did see Yea defend quite hard and they did restrict Powelltown to 6 second half goals but they could only manage to add two goals to their score which saw Powelltown come away with a dominant win.

Seville now sits one game clear in fifth spot after upsetting second-placed Kinglake with a 17-point victory. Seville was great early as they held Kinglake to no score in the first term while they booted 4.1 to lead by 25 points at the first change. Seville did control the tempo of the clash and although Kinglake did try their utmost, it was Seville that had all the answers and never looked like dropping this one.

Yarra Junction has pulled off one of the upsets of the year, downing Thornton Eildon by four points. The first half was a tough battle, but it was Junction that held the slight advantage as they went into the main break with an 11-point advantage. The third term did see Thornton with plenty of chances, but they could only manage seven straight behinds while Junction added 2.2 to lead by 12 points at the final change. The last quarter was a thriller as Thornton went on the attack. They scored 5.3 and looked as though they could steal victory, but Junction was able to score four majors themselves to hold on to a 4-point lead come final siren which sparked scenes of jubilation for their supporters.
