A BERWICK family can no longer sleep at night after thieves entered their house in the dead of night, took keys from inside and stole their car, in a brazen home invasion.

It is one of a spate of home burglaries in Casey in which thieves have broken into houses, often through unlocked doors, stolen keys and used them to make off with the occupant’s car.

In the last month, residents across Berwick and Cranbourne have fallen victim to the car-jacking bandits, who invade homes while families are asleep.

David Linton, of Berwick, bought his 18-year-old daughter a Holden Commodore for doing well at school, but less than a month before sitting for her licence, thieves broke into his Findon Way house through the unlocked front door and stole Emma’s car.

“I was pretty shocked they would have the courage to do that, people don’t take kindly with strangers in their house,” Mr Linton said.

“We’re struggling to sleep at night now, everyone’s on high alert. We’ve had to change all the locks, the garage remote ... they took all the keys, it’s so costly.”

Mr Linton said the door had been open for Emma who had gone to the movies that night on 13 July, but the thieves arrived instead, about 1am.

The car was found dumped and undriveable in Dandenong two days later, its radiator ruined.

All up, the cost of fixing the car and replacing the stolen keys and garage remote cost the Lintons somewhere between $2500 to $3000.

Emma said she had been “devastated” by the ordeal.

“I was in tears, that car is my pride and joy and it broke my heart,” she said.

“I love my car to bits, and it was taken from me and I don’t even know

A RENOWNED mental health and addiction service officially opened its doors in Casey last Wednesday.

While it’s been operational for roughly six month, EACH Social and Community Health formally opened its new centre in Narre Warren in the same building where Headspace launched just a few weeks ago.

EACH’s services will now be extended into south-east Melbourne with Wednesday’s official launch of the new Narre Warren site while connected group Substance Use Recover (SURe) is now also offering its services in Cranbourne.

ulation of Cardinia Shire is projected to grow by 60 per cent while the City of Casey is expected to grow by 26 per cent.

Following the Welcome to Country carried out by Aunty Carolyn Briggs, a range of guest speakers shared their stories with the room, including EACH participant Aisha, SURe participant Katharina, and Beyondblue ambassador Tony Wynd.

EACH CEO Peter Ruzyla also spoke to guests, noting how the south-east catchment had been identified as a growth corridor with increasing needs for services. “Alcohol and drug use are often co-occurring conditions along with mental health, trauma, gambling, poor physical health, crime and poor

The NBN Connect Roadshow has been set up at Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre all this week to help residents and local business owners learn more about hooking up to the national broadband network.

The roadshow team, which is in Cranbourne from 3 to 9 August, is hosting several information sessions for the community, while the event also includes a creative element for kids, inviting them to paint a letter sculpture at the shopping centre.

A SCHOOL parent has come to the rescue by stopping a man in a dramatic citizen’s arrest, after the offender tried to flee police when an allegedly stolen car was detected.

Police arrived at a Bayview Road property when the stolen Hyundai was spotted and attempted to arrest three offenders just after 11am on Friday.

But when one of the offenders fled by jumping a back fence and running into a nearby school, police were aided by a school parent who helped the officers stop and

detain the man.

One of the arrested offenders, released on bail, was then caught the next day in relation to another allegedly stolen car found in the same Tooradin street.

Police suspect these teens were involved in alleged armed robberies in Dromana and Rosebud last month.

Detectives on Monday arrested two more people in relation to the alleged armed robberies.

Frankston Embona Taskforce detectives are interview-

ing a 19-year-old Dandenong man, arrested in Narre Warren this morning, and a 17-yearold Maidstone boy, arrested in Keysborough this afternoon.

Police have arrested and charged four other males in relation to the incidents, alleged to have occurred on 29 July.

A 15-year-old Keysborough boy, a 17-year-old boy of no fixed address, an 18-year-old Mulgrave man and a 20-year-old Dandenong man will answer charges of armed robbery, motor vehicle theft and other offences.

A MAN with an alleged “extreme tendency for violence” has been released on bail after a magistrate deemed the applicant’s mental health issues were better treated in the community.

The man faces charges over threatening police with a knife while he was ice-affected on 9 March.

He has also been charged with criminal damage and breaching his bail conditions on 14 May by attending and damaging his parents’ Hampton Park house in breach of an intervention order.

Informant Senior Constable Dean Mason, of Casey family violence police unit, told a court on 27 July that the man’s “extreme tendency for violence” had led to Frankston Hospital refusing to treat the man until police support arrived.

During the May incident, the man damaged a plate-glass window and eventually allowed his mother to leave the home unharmed.

Sen Const Mason described it as a “siege-like” scenario.

There seemed to be a “breakdown” in the man’s regular medication and treatment, which led to the recent offending, Sen Const Mason said.

He referred to the man’s long history of mental illness and violence, which included 12 family violence intervention orders since 1995 as well as weapon and assault charges.

The informant feared the man may relapse into using ice - a habit that began in the applicant’s teenage years.

The man’s lawyer said the applicant’s mother had not felt threatened during the “siege” but had stayed in the house to protect her son.

“She was worried how he would react to police,” the lawyer said.

The man had not “responded well” to a recent change of mentalhealth service, and needed appropriate treatment, the lawyer said.

Magistrate Barry Schultz was concerned that the man had been remanded in custody for two months.

“Looking at the charges before me ... it’s unlikely he’ll get any further time in custody (when sentenced).”

He said it was a matter of getting the right supports and treatment for the man to live in the community.

“It’s one of those awful intersections between the law and the mental health system.

“This man should not be in custody.”

Puppy will be boy’s best friend

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH FOR mother of two Rebecca George, the thought of her autistic son wandering out of the school grounds again is ‘terrifying.’

“When they told me they found him on a side street I had a panic attack and was so concerned - what if no-one found him?” Rebecca said.

Eight-year-old Alex George from Hampton Park had no idea where he was or what had happened when he left his primary school gate and mum Rebecca has since decided to take action in the shape of a Labrador.

“My son is a safety risk - he’s wandered out of school once but once is enough,” she said.

An epilepsy and short-circuit seizure sufferer, Alex is forgetful and Rebecca has sought the help of service dog training to help her son in the long term.

“We are on the waiting list to start an autism assistance dog training program and I’m hopeful raising and training a puppy with Alex will help keep him safe and improve his life,” Rebecca said.

Restricted to one controlled playground frequented by Prep students at his school, Alex wears a high visibility vest at recess and lunch and Rebecca hopes an autism assistance dog will allow Alex more independence to play with his Grade 3 peers.

“He’s happy to play alongside other children but he doesn’t actively seek out social interactions and I think a dog will act as a social tool and help to improve Alex’s social and communication abilities.

“Children and people will come up to Alex to pat the dog and it will be a kind of social aid for him,” she said.

A CORONER has urged the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) set up a local government framework for suicide prevention following the “cluster“ of youth suicides in Casey and Cardinia in 2011 and 2012.

Coroner Audrey Jamieson’s findings into the spate of youth suicides in Melbourne’s south-east were formally released on Friday at an official Department of Human Services briefing.

The briefing was chaired by City of Casey Youth and Family Services manager Colette McMahon, while panel members included Suicide Prevention Australia CEO Sue Murray, Headspace CEO Chris Tanti, Monash Health professor Dr Michael Gordon and MAV president Bill McArthur.

The findings come after the Coroners Prevention Unit (CPU) completed a retrospective case series examination of suspected suicides and hospitalisation for self-harm among residents of the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire, aged 24 and under, for the period 2007 to 2013.

For suspected suicide, the CPU found that compared to previous years the frequency and rate per 100,000 population was elevated in 2011, meeting the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention’s definition of a “suicide cluster”.

Specifically, six suspected suicides were identified among “usual residents“ of the City of Casey in 2011, compared to one in 2010 and three in 2009.

Similarly four suspected suicides were identified among usual residents of Cardinia Shire in 2011 compared to one in 2010, two in 2009, and none in 2008 and 2007.

And in the two years after 2011, while the frequency of suspected

suicides was found to have reduced slightly, it remained higher than 2009 and 2010 in both the City of Casey and the Cardinia Shire - with four suspected suicides in 2012 and 2013 for Casey, and three in both 2012 and 2013 for Cardinia.

Coroner Jamieson recommended the MAV, through consultation with Casey Council, develop a suicide prevention and postvention response framework, which “has the ability to take into account various socio-demographic and geographic profiles of individual local government areas“.

“As part of the Victorian Suicide Prevention Framework, I recommend that the Department of Health and Human Services, Primary Health Networks, Municipal Association of Victoria, Victoria Police and the Chief Psychiatrist conduct a feasibility study on an information exchange process with the Coroners Court of Victoria,” she said.

The risk factor of social media was discussed at the briefing, with Coroner Jamieson finding an association in a majority of studies between exposure to suicidal behaviour of a person “in the social network” and suicide, despite no study unearthing evidence of a “direct causal relationship” between the two.

Friday’s DHS briefing saw reference to the previous coronial findings into the suicides of seven young residents in the City of Greater Geelong in 2009, in which State Coroner Ian Gray identified “an opportunity to reinvigorate suicide prevention activity in Victoria”.

The Casey and Cardinia findings were the culmination of years of research, in many ways instigated on 23 November, 2011, when a member of the public contacted the CPU to express concern over the perceived in-

crease of youth suicides in Casey and Cardinia Shire; followed in January 2012 by the formation of the Casey Youth Suicide Steering Committee (YSSC).

Ms McMahon said the YSSC had worked closely with lead agencies including Victoria Police, Monash Health, Ambulance Victoria, Headspace and the Department of Human Services.

“This co-ordinated effort is motivated to make long lasting change to ensure the best possible care and outcomes for Casey’s young people,” she said.

“It is focused on developing a strategic and co-ordinated regional response that will continue educating and supporting young people into the future in the area of suicide prevention.”

YSSC has also established the Casey Cardinia Student Wellbeing Committee, with Cardinia Shire Community Services manager Pam Martin echoing her Casey counterpart.

“This committee has provided several forums for teachers and school well-being staff to offer information and advice about suicide prevention and mental health, and build confidence in working with students around this issue,” Ms Martin said.

“The council, along with the other members of the steering committee, aims to ensure schools, professionals and residents are supported in relation to youth suicide and its prevention.”

The increase of youth suicides in Casey and Cardinia saw a community summit held in 2012 at the City of Casey chambers, and covered by the ABC’s Four Corners.

Alcohol pressures AS a grandparent and the son of an alcoholic parent, I become more and more concerned about the pressure that teenagers come under, especially my granddaughters, and the peer pressure and excessive alcohol advertising which encourages them to consume alcohol in its various forms.

With the stroke of a pen the government can legislate to restrict advertising as it has done for tobacco.

You do not need to be a genius to realise how effective this has been in saving lives and improving the wellbeing of so many.

I am yet to be convinced that excessive alcohol consumption is not a greater health risk than tobacco.

With one stroke of a pen or the press of a button the government can delete the word tobacco and substitute alcohol.

Can you imagine what benefits this would have and the only ones affected by this would be the alcohol and advertising industry.

Coming clean

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CLEANING staff at Myer Fountain Gate have been underpaid, the Fair Work Ombudsman has found.

The investigation revealed nine cleaners at several Myer stores in Melbourne - including Fountain Gate - had been collectively short-changed $6300 for the pay period 4-31 May, this year.

The discrepancies were discovered after Fair Work inspectors made an unannounced visit to the Fountain Gate store last December.

Myer has a services agreement with RCS Cleaning Services, which sub-contracted to Pioneer Cleaning Australia Pty Ltd, which in turn sub-contracted to Preston-based A&K Saana Services.

Myer terminated its contract with Pioneer in June.

The Fair Work inspectors interviewed two Fountain Gate cleaners who worked for contractor A&K Saana Services, which was sub-contracted to clean Myer sites at Fountain Gate, Knox City, Highpoint, and Altona.

The Fair Work Ombudsman subsequently determined they should both have been classified as employees and been paid at least $22.51 an hour. For the pay period 4-31 May, the inspectors found that the nine employees had been short-changed amounts ranging from $225 to $1009.

It was found the employees were underpaid their minimum hourly rate, minimum four-hour engagement period, broken shift allowances, penalty rates for early and late shifts, overtime rates and penalties for weekend and

public holiday work.

A Myer spokesman said the Fair Work Ombudsman had informed the company on 14 July that a “sub-contractor of Pioneer Facilities Services had acknowledged it was in breach of the Fair Work Act�. “Prior to this, Myer had been working with the FWO in its investigation into the cleaning services provided by Pioneer and its sub-contractors,� the spokesperson said.

Followed and confronted, man avoids car-jacking A MAN has narrowly avoided being car-jacked in Doveton after being followed in an allegedly stolen car.

The victim was driving along Acacia Street just after 7am last Wednesday, when he realised he was being followed by three men in a white Mercedes-Benz wagon.

The victim pulled into a random driveway to try and deter the men but they continued to tail him. The three men, described as Sudanese in appearance, got out of the car and demanded the victim’s keys.

When the victim refused, a small altercation ensued before the offenders jumped back into

the Mercedes and drove off.

Police believe the MercedesBenz may have been stolen earlier that morning, from Mulgrave.

THE Greens MP who last week slammed Rosalie Crestani for her involvement in last month’s Reclaim Australia rally has invited the Casey councillor to a dinner with the Islamic Council of Victoria.

South Eastern Metropolitan state Greens MP Nina Springle has sent the invitation a week after criticising Cr Crestani for emceeing last month’s Reclaim Australia rally in the city, which turned violent when anti-Islam and anti-racism groups attempted to clash across police lines.

Ms Springle said Cr Crestani should be “condemned” for participating in the rally.

Addressing last month’s Reclaim rally, Cr Crestani said: “Freedom of religion does not mean we accept the fundamental ideas of Islam, which do not allow for other religions. So that is why Islam needs reforming or it needs to leave Australia”.

In her invitation to Cr Crest-

ani sent on Tuesday, Ms Springle acknowledged the pair’s “very different views on the Muslim community” but said the dinner could help them understand each other’s “perspectives” and “move past unhelpful conflicts.”

“My hope is that through open dialogue and the ongoing building of trusting relationships, we can show pro-active leadership in the name of a harmonious multicultural society,” Ms Springle wrote.

Cr Crestani has told Star News she plans to attend the meeting but questioned the veracity of Ms Springle’s invitation, after claiming she was told Ms Springle “slammed” her in State Parliament on Wednesday morning.

Cr Crestani said it appeared “two-faced” to invite her to dinner and then criticise her.

Cr Crestani hit back at Ms Springle’s original comments, claiming she was showing “gross ignorance”.

“Why would a daughter of an immigrant support Reclaim if she didn’t feel strongly about wanting security and safety in Australia?” Cr Crestani said.

“And that’s what my presence there was for.

“And if she (Ms Springle) did her homework, she would see half the attendees were migrants, they just want Australia to be free from terrorism and free from the effects of Marxism and to maintain our culture.”

Cr Crestani distanced herself and Reclaim Australia from some of the more extreme right-wing protesters, including a man with Nazi tattoos who joined the anti-Islam protesters.

She said if Reclaim was perceived as “racist” it was due to media coverage of the event and “not from our end”.

“There were a couple guys that stood up with swastikas you’re going to get a few people that want to jeopardise your core message, we can’t help that.”

THE former First Lady of East Timor will be making a special visit to the City of Casey this month to speak to the Friends of Ermera and the broader community.

Melbourne-born Kirsty Sword Gusmao, who was married to the former President and Prime Minister of East Timor Xanana Gusmao for 15 years, will be the guest of honour at the special presentation to be held on 14 August at the Narre Warren council chambers and hosted

by Casey Mayoress Kay Morland.

Ms Gusmao was recently awarded the Order of Australia (OAM) in acknowledgement of her many years fighting for East Timor’s independence and the vital role she continues to play in the developing nation.

While she was the First Lady of East Timor, Ms Gusmao set up the Alola Foundation in 2001 to raise awareness of the widespread sexual violence against women and girls in Timor-Leste during militia attacks in 1999.

The foundation was named after Juliana ‘Alola’ dos Santos, who was brutally raped and taken to Indonesian West Timor during this period.

The foundation provides a wide range of important hands-on support for the women and children of TimorLeste.

An evening with Kirsty Sword Gusmao AM will be held on Friday 14 August from 7.30pm to 9pm, with tickets $25, and $15 for students, inclusive of a light supper.

The Cranbourne Turf Club has undergone a $4.3 million upgrade to its function centre and opened its rooms to the public last night (Tuesday).

Part funded by the State Government, CEO at the club Neil Bainbridge said the extensive works were finished in October last year and he would like to see more local events held in the new facility.

“At the moment we are holding about 60 non-race day functions a year and we’ve got a strong local push.

“There are a lot of people who travel outside of Casey to hold their events, so hopefully this can be an option for them,” Mr Bainbridge said.

The Legends Room on the ground floor now has the capacity to hold a cocktail function for up to 800 people and a seated event for around 550 people.

“Under our previous layout some of the larger function rooms could only seat about 150 to 180 people, now the rooms can be separated and we have the ability to hold different events at the same time,” Mr Bainbridge said.

A commercial grade kitchen was installed and three satellite kitchens to be able to service multiple parties at once, and one room has already been booked out for Saturday 12 September.

The Champions Room which can seat up to 150 people was the pick of choice for Casey Grammar School's 21st Anniversary dinner dance.

President of the schools Parents and Friends Committee Bharti Green said ‘the views from level two are absolutely beautiful, day and night.’

“Everything won us over about this venue, it’s very accommodating and from a dance floor to mingling tables, a presentation space and a sit down dinner it delivers it all.

“Parking is great, the space is beautifully presented, we have a wide range of dishes to pick from for a three-course meal, we’ve got security on the night and we will definitely book events here again,” Ms Green said.

The turf club is also expecting the $6 million oncourse stabling project to be completed as early as December this year.

A SENIOR police officer from Endeavour Hills has urged parents not to tell their kids police will “lock them up” in jail, after several visits to local kindergartens in recent weeks.

In the last few months local police have visited a number of kinders and pre-schools to speak to children about what police do and how they can stay safe.

But Senior Sergeant Alan Dew said it was disappointing

that on each occasion when the kids were asked “What do police do?”, a number responded “They put us in jail if we are bad.”

Sen Sgt Dew said the children were asked who told them this, and they said their parents.

“Basically I think that scares the kids in relation to how they view police,” the policing veteran said.

“We want kids not to be scared of us; we want kids who are scared to come to us for help.”

Sen Sgt Dew said many families in Casey came from other countries where policing styles may not be as “democratic” as those in Victoria.

“I’ve always been big on community engagement, trying to engage particularly with young people,” he said. “...We want to be seen as part of the community.

“We were a lot more detached from the community when I first joined, now we police with the community and for the community.”

Manufacturing spreads wings into south-east Professor Geoff Brooks said Dandenong is a city of makers.

South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) held its AGM at Sandown Racecourse on Thursday 30 July.

President Simon Whitely told the 150-strong crowd that SEMMA had about 200 member companies, only 40 per cent based in Dandenong.

“With support from a number of regional councils we are seeking to reposition SEMMA beyond the boundaries of our historical Dandenong base, with the ambition to unite the manufacturing sector of the entire region,” he said.

Executive officer Adrian Boden encouraged members to inform SEMMA of the issues they were facing and possible solutions.

“I am always ready to meet with any company looking to extend its network,” he said.

“Collaboration among our members will not only increase the local pie but improve our capabilities.

“Between our companies, we have an incredibly diverse range of capabilities and technologies that could only benefit from more collaboration.”

Mr Boden said SEMMA was in the past year instrumental in securing a bi-partisan pre-election commitment to 50 per cent local content in Victorian trains and trams.

SEMMA has forged a new partnership with the CSIRO and Swinburne University that has facilitated more than 30 researchers visiting seven small to medium enterprise (SMEs) members.

“Both sides are hopefully much more open and understanding of each other’s issues and of possible opportunities,” he said.

SEMMA also announced new deals for members from Nissan and 1st Contact Foreign Exchange at the event.

“THE battle for manufacturing is as much a battle for talented people as anything else.”

This was the key message from guest speaker Professor Geoff Brooks at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Premier Regional Business Awards breakfast at Sandown Greyhounds on 29 July.

He said many talented students eyed medicine or law studies.

“We need to convince them to follow this path,” he said.

Prof Brooks co-ordinates and develops manufacturing-related research and education across Swinburne University of Technology and is a metallurgy expert.

He spoke about the future directions of manufacturing.

Prof Brooks graduated as an engineer in 1983 and “got the research bug” a few years later.

He drove to Melbourne University and approached the engineering faculty about a PhD. They asked what he knew about metallurgy and he was soon on his way to visit John Floyd in Kitchen Road, Dandenong.

“The technology developed in Kitchen Road, Dandenong, is used in smelting around the world,” he said.

“John Floyd had an enormous impact on my career.”

Prof Brooks listed ways to turn around Australian manufacturing, including a shift to higher-value products and ser-

vices, adapting existing strengths to new circumstances and linking manufacturing to innovation.

He said innovation was about making the most of new materials and technology, business models and approaches, and novel designs and products.

Prof Brooks said the digitisation of design had enabled testing in virtual environments, speeding up the prototyping process, and rapid sharing that removed borders.

“I don’t think we’ve fully recognised the potential of it,” he said.

He said technology also made finding specialised skills and new ideas easier than ever before.

“That’s a huge benefit of the world we’re living in at the moment,” he said.

Prof Brooks urged guests to take inspiration from the late Steve Jobs’s efforts at Apple.

“Make the consumer experience the heart of how you develop a product,” he said.

Vacuum developer James Dyson set out to remove the word hoovering from the world’s vocabulary, vowing to make a better product.

Prof Brooks said this was an example of determination to follow through on a clever idea.

He also paraphrased 2012 Young Australian of the Year Marita Cheng who said the country needed to encourage children to become makers, not just consumers.

“You’re a city of makers and you should be very, very proud of that,” he said.

Team fights against grief AFTER a successful trial of companion therapy on a grieving resident with dementia, a team of Berwick aged care workers have been nationally recognised for their efforts.

The companion therapy team at Bupa Berwick Aged Care are finalists in this year’s national HESTA Aged Care Awards in the team innovation category.

Up against four other finalists, the awards recognise aged care providers who make an ex-

ceptional contribution to their residents’ quality of life.

Bupa Berwick’s Care Manager, Ling Pang said a resident living with dementia began exhibiting signs of grief and loss after his companion died and since the therapy had improved considerably.

“The resident’s anxiety and distress has reduced and his emotional needs are fulfilled because he feels useful and is experiencing companionship again,” Ms Pang explained.

Under close supervision with a general practitioner, care

manager, team leader, carers and support staff the therapy brought out the residents joy of talking and laughing again.

“In addition to addressing the clinical needs of the resident the team also considered how they could address his emotional needs,” she said.

The winners will be announced in Canberra at the HESTA Aged Care Awards dinner on Thursday 27 August and the team innovation category winner will receive a $10,000 development grant.

HEALTHY food and healthy relationships were the theme at Rangebank Preschool on Wednesday morning.

Parents and grandparents were welcomed to a community engagement breakfast run by teacher Barbara Ryan-Perkins.

“We are always encouraging healthy eating at Rangebank and this was a fantastic way to get the children and their families together with good food,” Ms Ryan-Perkins said.

More than 65 friends of the preschool enjoyed toast, cereal and juice all supplied by Woolworths Cranbourne.

Ms Ryan-Perkins said involving the shopping giant was a great way to introduce the wider community into the preschool.

“Without the assistance and contribution of Woolworths the breakfast wouldn’t have gone ahead,” she said.

Children got to butter their toast with the help of Woolworths employees Colin, Billie, Bianca and Ilene.

“Mornings like these improve the children’s communication skills and help to enhance their knowledge of healthy food,” she said.

After this success Ms RyanPerkins and her group of 36 preschool children have decided to continue running the community engagement breakfasts with the help of Woolworths.

By JARROD POTTER BIG V FINALS - DIVISION 1 MEN AND YOUTH LEAGUE 2 MEN DUAL hopes of bringing the Big V championships back to Casey were snuffed out on Saturday night in back-to-back Cavaliers’ finals defeats.

The Casey basketball community entered the night confident of its chances after an impressive finish to the Division 1 Men’s season - taking out the minor flag with a 17-5 record - while the Youth League 2 Men were riding high after knocking off their greatest competition Warrandyte the week before in the first final.

But Saturday will go down as the day Casey senior men fell to Geelong 58-71 while the Youth Men succumbed to a 69-82 loss to an equally fast-finishing Mornington.

A buoyant start had Casey lead 15-2 at one point in the first term, but from then on the Supercats started to drag the Cavaliers back in.

Geelong’s march began in earnest in the second term, chipping away at the initial deficit before pushing ahead to send Casey to the rooms trailing 27-33.

Shooting proved the thorn in Casey’s side with Stewart Baird’s charges only mustering 28.4 per cent from the field while its three-point game - that had been an emphatic hallmark of the season so far - was also virtually absent.

Geelong out-rebounded the vertically impressive Cavaliers but had similar issues on shooting to leave the match in the balance until the dying minutes.

Foul trouble dogged both sides as Brent Hobba (14 points, seven rebounds), Ben Louis (12 points) and Lester Strong (12 points, 12 rebounds) all circled ejection with four fouls.

Strong’s match on Geelong centre Seb Loader was the standout Casey achievement on the night.

Not many players in the league can match the versatile Supercat under the ring, or managed to fire back and stop his defensive prowess like big number 44 did in the elimination final.

Casey fought back one last time with five minutes remaining - dropping the margin to four as Hobba and Louis called upon every ounce of their immense fi-

nals experience.

But Louis would soon be forced from the game on a line-ball offensive charge and from there Geelong held court and built back up the winning margin.

Paul Hutchison (28 points) and Dane Bow (nine points) struck the final nails into the Casey coffin beyond the arc, leaving the Cavaliers to wonder yet again what could’ve been of another strong season.

“I kind of think it probably started a few weeks ago to be honest,” Baird said.

“Truthfully looking back - I had this in mind at the time but didn’t want to play on it - I don’t think we’ve been playing well for a month.

“Shooting percentage over the last month has been in the doldrums and that was reflected again.

“They just knocked down big shots at critical times and we weren’t able to do.”

The efforts of Strong were even more impressive as Baird revealed after the match his star centre may need back surgery to correct his spinal discs.

“Even more to that story - he’s got two really badly bulging discs in his back and may require surgery,” Baird said.

“Lester has been playing under really difficult circumstances and to go up against Seb and manage it in that manner, and couldn’t ask more of him.”

It brings to an end Casey’s first Division 1 campaign and with the club’s intent to move up to State Championship quickly, it may be the only season spent in Big V’s middle ranked competition.

In the opening final, the Cavaliers Youth Men could not halt the march of the Breakers down the stretch as a 15-29 final term saw a comfortable lead evaporate quickly.

As with the senior side, a 22-9 lead was opened early, but the visiting Breakers crashed the party to storm home.

Gallant efforts from Sean Mckinnon (14 points, eight rebounds), Ryan Sinclair (14 points) and Sam Pike (nine points, nine rebounds) were not enough to hold back the tides as Mornington snuck through to face Warrandyte in the Youth League 2 Men’s grand final.

EARNING his first state jersey was an unexpected honour for up-and-coming basketballer Jonathan Fennell.

Fennell, 11, from Lynbrook, has been at the peak of junior basketball through his time at the Dandenong Rangers - especially in 2014 as his side won a National Junior Classic and a VC grand final.

But Fennell is about to discover what he’s truly capable of at the next level as he represents School Sport Victoria (SSV) at the upcoming under-12 basketball championships in South Australia.

“I was shocked and very happy,” Fennell said.

“They all had talent there and I knew I was a top 25, but I didn’t know I was a top 10.

“It’s my first time making the team and I’d like to win the gold medal.”

Given the tough defensive tasks for his Rangers’ rep team, Fennell is a versatile swing-man capable of playing a number of spots on court and relishes every chance to get on court and play.

“I think I’ve been playing for about six years and I just love the game,” Fennell said. “It’s fun.”

This season hasn’t been as easy for Fennell’s Rangers, with a couple of bad beats at the bigger tournaments so far with a middle of the pack finish at the National Junior Classic and a similar placing in the Australia Day tournament.

“We didn’t do that well in the Classic - we came ninth - and in the Australia Day tournament I think we beat every other team except Melbourne, so we came about fifth in that tournament,” Fennell said.

The Lynbrook Primary School student is keeping his basketball dreams simplistic for the moment - hoping to notch state team chances year in, year out as he progresses through the ranks.

He wanted to thank his under-12 coach Brad Crole and first rep coach Brody for their support.

Fennell and his SSV side will head to the Australia Pacific School Games Basketball Championships in Adelaide from 21-28 November.

By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW ROUND 16 CASEY was thrown headfirst into the crucible on Sunday as the Scorpions failed to stop Werribee.

Forced to battle just about all of the VFL top brass approaching the finals, the Scorpions’ first high-rank battle ended in capitulation against the Tigers.

The encircling typhoon-like conditions left Casey Fields at the behest of Mother Nature and it wasn’t a day for the Scorpions as they struggled to up the ante after half-time.

A sensational second term had Casey flying out to a four goal lead. Max King and Ben Newton (two goals apiece) combined with the likes of Nathan Page and Angus Scott in the forward half to sear a seven-goal stanza into the scorer’s

ledger. But it all dried up for the Scorpions after the main break as Justin Plapps’ charges could only muster two goals.

Werribee flew past as the conditions seemed to favour their in-and-under, stoppage-tostoppage style of play.

Seven goals of their own in the third term had the Tigers ahead but Casey couldn’t return fire in the last as the home side attained just one more behind throughout the term to concede a 13-point defeat.

It was a fleet of Demons to impress the most as Jack Fitzpatrick and Mitch White defensively stood tall alongside midfielders Aiden Riley, Christian Salem and Newton.

Casey falls to eighth on the VFL ladder, but has a crucial two-game buffer over the chasers Port Melbourne and Geelong. With four games left in the horror run towards finals,

Casey travels to Box Hill on Sunday to face the high-flying Hawks from 2pm.

TOM Hallinan has stood down from his role as senior coach at the Nar Nar Goon Football Club, citing health issues he’s currently working through.

The former Tooradin Dalmore mentor replaced Scott Goldsworthy as senior coach at the end of last season and guided the side to sixth on the Ellinbank and District Football League (EDFL) ladder with eight wins from its first 13 games this year.

Nar Nar Goon Football Club president Adrian Scott said Hallinan stood down from his position on Sunday of last week, adding: “Tom has some health issues that are a priority in his life now, rather than football.”

Hallinan told the News that putting his own health first was the most important thing right now.

“I’ve voluntarily stepped down,” he said.

“The job was fine, and the club has been good.

“It (the role) most certainly had its challenges - part of it was being away from our home ground and having those resources there and whatnot.

“There was a lot of work to do at the club - there were some disengaged and disenchanted players - and then I had to integrate my own team as well.

“There was also an unknown about how on and off field would pan out being away from home. It was as smooth as you’d like, but it was a lot of work.”

Hallinan was made redundant from his job in November through a company merger, which also created additional stresses in his everyday life.

“There were a lot of external pressures,” he said.

“I’ve got to pull back here otherwise I’ll make myself ill.

Footy is always there, but it’s supposed to be fun.

“I went to the club and said I wasn’t coping that well and said I had to step down as coach.

“I stepped down knowing there’s a good team behind me - that business as usual could always run.

“My intention was never to step down, but in doing it

Hallinan said, in hindsight, he was potentially biting off more than he could chew in taking on the role. “(But) I was able to manage well due to a fantastic coaching team behind me, and a good leadership group led by Brent Hughes,” he said.

Among the things he was proudest of in his time as senior coach at the Goon - where he was a key part of the senior premiership team back in 2010 alongside the likes of Brett Dore, Matt Wade and playercoach Clint Williams - Hallinan beamed about a graduate program this yeah, where five young players ‘graduated’ into the senior side.

He said moving forward the club had to capitalise on its branding in again being able to play home games at Spencer Street from next season, as well as its junior ranks.

After an extended period in coaching, Hallinan said now was the time for him to take a step back.

“I was just there (at the Goon) as the key co-ordinator, but at times you’re also called on to be counsellor, coach, mo-

tivator, mentor, sounding board, and to provide career guidance for up to 50 young fellas,” he said.

“I’ve been in coaching for about nine years now and I think it’s time to step back for a year or two and take care of my own health.

“I revealed my depression early on in the year. It doesn’t matter who you are - f*** the stereotypical strongman. You have to reveal what you’re going through.

“Look at those finishing up in footy - all of a sudden their routine is gone. Clubs need to understand their social responsibility, rather than being just a good sports club that practices responsible service of alcohol.

They can be a portal to understanding social issues like this. “(But) the club has been good - they’ve supported my decision.”

Chris Kent and Chris Jones have taken over Hallinan’s duties, with Chris Langley also continuing in his role as a playing-assistant. The Goon recorded a stirring 70-point win over Longwarry at the Crows Nest on Saturday, 20.7 (127) to 8.9 (57). Langley booted nine goals.

Max does the drinks THIS good-looking sort in a frilly-fairy dress and pink wig is none other than Cranbourne midfielder Max Gearon, who was carrying drinks for the Eagles’ VWFL team on Sunday after breaking a promise to the girls recently. We’re not sure what the promise was, but Max had to spin the wheel and this was his punishment.

Holt leads the charge CRANBOURNE champion Marc Holt is craving team success after celebrating his 200th game with six goals in the Eagles’ 23-point victory over Berwick at Casey Fields.

Holt captained the Eagles to their drought-breaking premiership win in 2011, a day that looked set to spark the club into a long and sustained run of success.

But, as captain for the last three years, he has suffered the pain of grand final defeats despite kicking 157, 118 and 103 goals in those seasons.

“I can’t sit around with my mates in years to come and keep telling them about how many goals I’ve kicked, you just can’t excited about it because we lost those grand finals,” he said.

“They mean nothing, the 80 goals I kicked in 2011 are the best 80 goals I’ve ever kicked because they mean something and got us a premiership.”

Holt starred for the Eagles on Saturday, kicking five goals in the third quarter as the Eagles piled on 8.5 to 1.4 to take a five-goal lead to the final break.

The Wickers regained their composure, but a wildly inaccurate 1.8 to 1.1 final quarter saw Rhys Nisbet’s men go down to the Eagles for the second time this year.

Michael Boland was terrific in

the ruck for the Eagles, who had Michael Theodoridis, with four goals, and Chace Struth also in red-hot form.

Ben Kearns was outstanding for the Wickers, kicking four goals with plenty of highlights.

Doveton earned the right to play in its first finals series since 2009 after a typically gutsy and determined nine-point triumph over Narre Warren at Robinson Reserve.

Ironically it was back in 2009 when the Doves last defeated the Magpies, the two clubs now set for a mouth-watering showdown in the elimination final at ROC in a few weeks’ time.

Big-name recruits Jake Dermott, Russell Gabriel and Sam Raru were superb for the Doves, while the under-rated Shaun Semmens and Simon Black were also impressive.

Kerem Baskaya took his tally to 59 for the season with a four-goal haul for the Magpies.

Hampton Park coach Matt O’Neil was quick to shift the focus after his team cracked its first win of the season with a runaway 31-point victory over ROC at Starling Road.

Sixth-placed Doveton showed the level of depth in the South East Football Netball League this year when it pushed the undefeated Narre Warren all the way at Robinson Reserve.

The Doves lost by five goals, 56-51, but were super-impressive according to Magpies coach Jade Heinrich.

“If they make it they will be a team to watch out for because that was definitely our hardest game for the season,” Jade said.

“It was tough and I was really proud that we were able to still win under that type of pressure.”

The Magpies bounded out of the blocks, scoring 18 goals to 10 in the

first quarter, to take a real grip on the contest. And it was their usual stars that were at it again, with Erin Clark and Leigh Taylor through the midcourt feeding Elly Stewart and Tayla Shannon with style during a dominant first period of play.

Cara Humbert and Aggie Seeto were superb in defence for the Doves; while Rahni Samason was once again impressive under the ring.

Berwick ensured its 60th birthday celebrations were in full-swing on Saturday night after a 44-38 victory over Cranbourne at Casey Fields.

Emily LaRoche, Sarah McDermott and Olivia Macente got on top through the middle of the court for the Wickers, while Jodie Cranston, Claire Rottier and Rebecca Vickers took turns in tormenting Cranbourne’s goal-shooters. Tara Cecil and Alanah Hardy were terrific in defence for the Eagles.

Hampton Park continued its dominance over ROC this year with a brilliant 63-34 victory at Starling Road.

Maybe the thought of playing at this year’s grand final venue appealed to the Redbacks, who wasted little time in asserting their will on the contest.

Kylie Kibble’s side has lost just two games for the season and is certainly a front-runner to roll up for the big dance on Saturday 19 September.

Weather turns game ugly

By JARROD POTTER VWFL - DIVISION 1 AND 3 WINNING ways continued in the south-east as Cranbourne and Endeavour Hills fought against the torrid conditions to maintain top billing respectively.

Cranbourne had to push past Melbourne University - kicking four last-term goals to retain top billing in Division 1.

With the wind buffeting Casey Fields - even worse than usual at the windswept venue - skill was effectively thrown out the window as getit-on-the-boot became the prevailing attitude through the first half.

The Eagles adjusted after the half to return to finesse footy - working their way against the wind to kick two goals and outscore the MUGARs before using a tailwind to rattle off the remaining majors and push through another triumph more importantly.

Cranbourne coach Kris Smith could only sum up the win with one word: ugly.

“We played ugly - ugly is the best word to use,” Smith said.

“I think we were scrappy - the wind was howling down at Cranbourne like I’ve never seen before - it’s pretty tough to get footy in that weather.

“We reversed what we weren’t doing right at half time and switched on a bit more in that third quarter.

“Even though we kicked into the wind we were smarter with the footy and with the wind at our backs in the last, it made it pretty easy to run away with it.”

Smith praised his young forwards Hayley Wildes (three goals), who continued an exceptional debut VWFL season, and Brittany Wood (two goals), who returned to the senior line-up after getting dropped recently.

“Brittany Wood was pretty good - dropped a couple of weeks ago and she went back and got some touch,” Smith said.

“She was really good down forward and it’s good to show that you can go down and gain some confidence and return to the senior side.”

In what could be an early grand final preview, first-placed Cranbourne battles second-ranked Seaford, and Smith wanted to put to bed the loss to the Tigers earlier in the year with an emphatic, all-round effort on Sunday.

“We’ll get a good indication where both sides are at,” Smith said.

“Good test to see if our game plan stands up just got to be clean with the footy and as long as we’re focused, we can get the job done.

“Our pressure and our tackling has to be up from what it was last week.”

The wind played havoc with Endeavour Hills’ goal-scoring, but the rampage in front of goals was enough to brush aside Bayswater in a 54-point win. Georgia Punton (four goals) and Sarah Wallace (three goals) were in the best alongside Rebecca Sadler and Ash Ladson.

The Falcons’ perfect record is up for grabs this weekend in the last round of the Division 3 homeand-away season when Endeavour Hills battles Mordialloc away from noon.

SOMETIMES reality can exceed even your wildest dreams.

Earning an Australian Opals’ debut at her Dandenong Basketball Stadium home-court on Monday night was beyond belief for Endeavour Hills’ basketballer Aimie Clydesdale.

Clydesdale, 21, is in the midst of a year beyond compare as she goes from strength to strength wherever she is assigned, including her first national senior selection.

Earning her Australian Opals call-up, after impressively battling the rest of the world at the World Uni Games in South Korea last month, Clydesdale’s inaugural campaign with the country’s senior women’s team was a resounding success.

She featured in all three clashes against Japan - held in Dandenong, Frankston and Ballarat recently - as the Opals claimed the series 2-1.

“It was a great experience something that I was really happy to be a part of,” Clydesdale said.

“Got to make my first debut game for the Opals on my home court, so it was really amazing.

“It was a real honour - the Opals don’t play in Australia very often, so I was really lucky to get that opportunity and the home crowd gave me a big welcome… I was really happy to be a part of it.”

It all comes back to that first step on court Monday - her court ever since starting out as a junior Ranger - as Clydesdale was subbed in to join the elite pantheon of Australian Opals representatives.

“Probably just my first call up onto the court for my first game,” Clydesdale said.

“We were playing 14 players so I wasn’t sure when I was going to hit the court or if I was going to hit the court.

“When I made my first sub into the game I think that was probably a really special moment for me - I was a bit nervous about it but really excited as well.”

It adds yet another layer to an impressive year for the pacey pointguard, but it’s all driven by her tenacious appetite to improve.

“It’s been a massive year for me it’s what you wait for, you put all the hard work in, in hope that something like this is going to happen… I feel really luck that I was asked to be part of the Opals’ squad… from that moment on it’s all gone upwards and will only keep going upwards,” Clydesdale said.

“I’ve just got to keep on top of it - keep working hard - and hopefully have a really good WNBL season… we’ll see what happens from there.”

Australian Opals’ coach Brendan Joyce said he wanted to promote Clydesdale quickly through the ranks as she has the potential to become a major part of Australia’s basketball future.

“We’ve identified that she has some really good physical traits and good basketball skill, so we really wanted to involve her and expose her to an opportunity at the World Uni Games and also the Opals’ camps to expedite her development,” Joyce said.

“She’s done a really good job - we are certainly about exposing players not only for now but for the future.

“Aimie is very quick and she’s got a good intellect and she’s good size for a guard as well so there’s huge potential there.”

High-stakes thriller

By RUSSELL BENNETT LET’S cut straight to the chase - the Pakenham Silverbacks will this Sunday play the biggest game in their history and they need your support.

They’ll face off against the Bendigo Dragons from 1.30pm this Sunday on Rawling Field at Sydney Pargeter Reserve in Endeavour Hills.

The winner earns the right to battle it out for the Gridiron Victoria Division 2 championship at the Latrobe City Sports and Entertainment Stadium, in Morwell, on 15 August.

“There’s a fair bit of excitement around the club - we’ve got a lot of belief we can knock them off,” said Kane Latham, one of the Silverbacks’ inaugural players, about this Sunday’s game.

The Dragons finished on top of the Division 2 standings with nine wins from their 10 games - including 42-0 and 22-0 wins over the Silverbacks in their two encounters.

But Latham and his Pakenham team-mates have the belief that they can cause something special.

He said their training had been reflective of their belief in each other, and of their cause and he praised coach Paul Tindall, who only started at the club this season.

“Getting everyone on board and on the same page at a gridiron club can be a difficult job, but he’s done

it really well,” Latham said.

Adam Kolinski was the Gridiron Victoria Division 2 MVP last season but he made the switch from linebacker to running back for 2015.

The results have been stunning.

“He’s averaged probably 100 yards and had 11 touchdowns, and that’s even with sitting out four games due to an ankle injury,” Latham said, adding that Dan Salvar - who switched from tight end to the defensive line - had also been “phenomenal” and was really one to watch this week.

Latham also heaped praise on quarterback Steve Mclean, saying “he just works so hard”.

“He takes harder hits than anyone else on our team, but he’s not afraid to keep the ball - he’s fearless and we’re lucky to have him.

“He’s definitely one of the better quarterbacks in Division 2.

“A lot of the guys in this league are really experienced but his only in his second season. He’s the sort of guy you build around.”

Latham said the Silverbacks had to be wary of the Dragons’ linebacker core this weekend, which includes star Bruce Fu. “If we turn the ball over or don’t execute our plays someone like him will do a lot of damage to us,” he said.

“He’s fast, mobile and strong.”

“That’s probably the hardest thing,” Latham said.

“It’s hard to get your mates to watch in Reservoir - you can’t expect blokes to travel that far, and it’s week in, week out leaving at 6am to play a game in Bendigo at 10, and you may not get home until midnight.

“It gets pretty taxing.”

“It’s the biggest game we’ve ever played and we can win it and make a real statement.”

Latham’s Silverbacks teammate, and club founder and president Richie Howlett said of the game this week: “Making the finals this year really validates all the hard work put in by the players, coaches and committee.

“Being our closest game to Pakenham this year, we’re really looking forward to the sideline support from family, friends and local fans to give us the edge in what’s going to be a tough game.”

Tough guy lacking punch

By DEREK OGDEN AS much as a small 1.2-litre three-cylinder hatchback could be considered aggressive, the new Micra is more so, according to Nissan.

The city runabout has ‘a new style that delivers a stronger, more assertive and dynamic look,’ its maker opines.

With almost 7 million sales under its belt in more than 30 years, the Nissan small car now checks in with a long list of upgrades, including revised spec levels, a new look and a slew of technical innovations.

The Micra, known as Nissan March in some countries, is built in four centres around the world and sold globally. All cars coming to Australia are made in India.

Nissan Micra ST manual hits the market at $13,490, plus on-road costs, an automatic version ups the price to $15,290, while the Ti comes in automatic only for $16,990. Nissan made the ST auto available for our week’s road test.

The smallest Nissan in Australia has come in for some big changes with more than 50 per cent new body panels.

It now features the Nissan ‘VMotion’ front grille now delivering a stronger, more distinctive and dynamic look.

This frontal shape was introduced

in the SUV and 4WD Nissans, yet looks good on this passenger car.

In addition, the latest Micra sports a new bonnet, front guards, restyled front and rear bumper, new headlights and rear lamps as well as new-design wheels.

Micra Ti grade enjoys 15-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, foglights and auto headlights.

Inside, the surroundings are of a higher standard than previously, with trim and surface finishes being given a quality look and feel.

All variants feature a new centre cluster, updated dashboard instrumentation and seat trim. Power windows are now standard.

The top grade 2015 Micra Ti takes the 5.8-inch touch screen satellite navigation, reverse camera and LED rear lights.

Auxiliary port and Bluetooth phone system with audio streaming are now standard.

Passive safety is covered by front to rear curtain airbags, front seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters,

The usual active safety suspects - vehicle dynamic control, anti-lock

braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist - found in more expensive cars - are standard Micra features.

Nissan Micra does not take ‘forever and a day’ to reach 100 kilometres an hour from a standing start, it only seems like it.

On more than one occasion during our test the Micra made a meal of getting up to speed when filtering into motorway traffic from a slip road: practice makes perfect, it’s a matter of becoming used to the car.

An unusually high fuel consumption of 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres for such a small engine on the motorway requires some explanation.

Although of a small three-cylinder, 1.2-litre capacity it only has a fourspeed automatic transmission. At maximum motorway speed of 110 km/h the engine is revving at 3000 rpm.

In an urban context the Micra was an exemplar of frugality at around seven to eight litres per 100 kilometres.

With all its buffing, the 2015 Nissan Micra does not quite make it with the tough-guy image.

However, the added interior quality and technical innovation are welcome - and the price is certainly right.
